Transcript
- 0:11I'm Hillary Condon, welcome back.
- 0:13It's our second hour of our program.
- 0:14We'll take you until 2 off the bench coming up at that time,
- 0:18bottom of the hour, Vinny Iyer covers the NFL for the Sporting
- 0:21News. He will join Trent and I Trent
- 0:24plays of the day. Circus sports sponsor those.
- 0:26Before we get out of here right now, let's head to Chicago.
- 0:29Centurion Stone of Central Iowa sponsors our weekly Wednesday
- 0:33guests. These David Kaplan.
- 0:35How are you Capper? I'm doing awesome.
- 0:38Great to be with all of you. My Chicago Bears are still
- 0:43alive, moving on, so we'll see. Indeed they are in a home game
- 0:47and it sounds like it's going to be cold and perfect.
- 0:50Perfect setup for for your Bears.
- 0:52Well let let's go back and relive it in some respects
- 0:55because it was a phenomenal game.
- 0:57Hard to believe Jordan Love threw 4 touchdown passes in that
- 0:59game, but he did came out on the short end of the 625 six.
- 1:03They outscored the the Packers in the fourth quarter.
- 1:06Caleb Love making just an unbelievable 4th and 15 play
- 1:10cap. That's one of those plays that
- 1:12Chicago sports fans, you know, I'm sure that just you can come
- 1:15up with something the Cubs did, whether it be a big postseason
- 1:18home run. I think that 4th and 15 play is
- 1:21going to be talked about for a long time.
- 1:23When he found a Doonese. Yeah.
- 1:26Oh yeah, 4th and 8th with 5 is. That what it.
- 1:28Was 7 to go, 4th and 8th, five O 7.
- 1:32And somehow, some way as he's getting dragged down, he finds
- 1:37Roma Dunze for 27 yards. That's probably the most
- 1:42impactful play I have ever seen a Bears quarterback make in my
- 1:47lifetime. Yeah.
- 1:50That's saying something. It's not a stretch.
- 1:52Absolutely the. Incredible.
- 1:55The culmination of that people imposing the Michael Jordan jump
- 1:59man at him, going to his left, making that throw, contorting
- 2:02his body in that way, getting it in that tight window over the
- 2:06people in front. Just an incredible play is at
- 2:10that moment that it's suddenly it's everybody now that
- 2:13everybody's jumping aboard and and the naysayers and there's
- 2:16plenty of them out there still nationally that everybody now in
- 2:19Chicago. Look, there's no more questions.
- 2:21This is going to be our guy. This is the guy.
- 2:24This is something in almost everybody's lifetime, unless you
- 2:27watch Sid Luckman play. We've never seen a quarterback
- 2:29like this. Is the time now getting there
- 2:32for everybody, at least Bears fans as it pertains to Caleb
- 2:35Williams? Oh, he owns the city.
- 2:38When he was grating cheese and contorting his face on the
- 2:42Amazon Prime set after the game. I mean, that was just, you know,
- 2:46a cold, vicious move that the city is in love with this guy.
- 2:52And anybody that watches him that does not believe that he's
- 2:56a franchise quarterback. I don't know what you're
- 2:58watching. I don't.
- 3:00I'm with you and I don't know if anybody's watching.
- 3:02As good as Tyler Warren is, will still criticize that draft pick
- 3:06as both Trent and I kinda did. You didn't because Loveland Cap
- 3:10was out of his mind in that football game.
- 3:12I got that he played. I think he is, yeah.
- 3:15Then Tyler Warren and that does not mean that Tyler Warren's a
- 3:20bad player. Not saying that in any way,
- 3:23shape or form. I'm just telling you that when
- 3:27you look at what Colston Loveland has been able to do, he
- 3:31has become probably the number one receiving option for Kayla
- 3:37Williams. I mean, I'm just being honest.
- 3:40He's he's a beast man. This guy is just an incredibly
- 3:45talented kid and he is a tight end in a wide receiver's body.
- 3:51That's what he is. And he's just been magnificent.
- 3:55We keep playing the audio of the guys from ESPN Milwaukee when
- 4:00the draft. Was in green.
- 4:01Bay last year and they're laughing.
- 4:05Oh, Can you believe it? Typical Bears.
- 4:07What a terrible pick. They should have taken time at
- 4:10once. And now this kid goes out and
- 4:12gets 137 yards in a playoff game as they beat the Packers and
- 4:17they they're just devastated up there.
- 4:19And I think it's hilarious. It wasn't hilarious during the
- 4:23first half, so we were honest. Last week I had the Mia Culpo as
- 4:27we talked about Loveland and how wrong I was with him against
- 4:30Warren. Now, how are you feeling down
- 4:3221, three at the half? I had to start to crack into the
- 4:34beers a little bit, something I rarely do at home alone.
- 4:37But it was time to start slugging back some beers and
- 4:39trying to change the the luck of the Bears.
- 4:41How are you at halftime cap? So I live that the Bears at
- 4:46halftime, you did, I did. And I also live that a two leg
- 4:50parlay, Caleb 20 or more yards rushing and Caleb 225 or more
- 4:57yards passing. And yeah, made a nice score.
- 5:03Absolutely. Was I going to bet my life that
- 5:06they would come back and win? No.
- 5:09Was I kicked off? Yeah.
- 5:10I kicked the coffee table. And our son was watching with
- 5:14me, as were some neighbors. And when I kicked the table and
- 5:18dropped an F bomb, our son took his hat off and threw it and
- 5:23dropped an F bomb. And my wife was right.
- 5:25There she goes. Just because he's a moron
- 5:29doesn't mean you happen to be not going to be allowed here.
- 5:33He said it. So was I 1000% supremely
- 5:39confident we were winning? No.
- 5:41I did think we'd come back. I did think we'd battle.
- 5:44There was no way we were going down to that team in that
- 5:48fashion. And then when Kevin Buyer told
- 5:50me last night that he said it was not a pleasant place to be
- 5:55in our locker room at halftime, but he said we came out and
- 5:59immediately I think it was a nation, right?
- 6:02Tyler Gordon Blitz and it completely changed the what the
- 6:06way the look that the Packers saw from the Bears.
- 6:09They started trying to run the football.
- 6:11They averaged with Jacobs .9 yards per carry in the
- 6:14second-half. And then the Bears were able to
- 6:17finally get Caleb and everybody rolling.
- 6:20And Owen Cruz told me, and he's a master of breaking down the
- 6:23film. He said he broke down the film
- 6:25and he said, I I really thought Caleb played a really good game
- 6:28the entire night. He said there was just some
- 6:31things that the offensive line wasn't great and Green Bay was
- 6:35clicking offensively, he said, but he believed they could come
- 6:38back. It was unbelievable cap just to
- 6:40watch it and you're right about the defense into the adjustments
- 6:43that they made because Green Bay had no no idea what they were
- 6:47doing defensively to start the second-half as the Bears owned
- 6:49it. So let's get your confidence
- 6:51factor going into this week. We talked about Loveland and the
- 6:54damage that he did. The weakness on the Rams is is I
- 6:57watched this Rams team is their secondary.
- 6:59They are not good against the pass cap.
- 7:02I I have to believe that there's a lot of confidence and even
- 7:06though they're going to go into the game as an underdog to the
- 7:09Rams, the Bears should be able to move the football through the
- 7:12air. Weather dependent, of course.
- 7:15Yeah. They should be.
- 7:16That's going to be very, very cold, but that's that.
- 7:19Rams offenses, as Tommy Waddle called it, a wagon.
- 7:23They are Devante Adams, Puka Nakua, 3 tight ends, Tyron
- 7:30Williams, the main, and obviously Matthew Stafford.
- 7:33That team's a wagon offensively. So in my world, the key to the
- 7:37game is whether it's through the run or the pass, you've got to
- 7:42contain their offense by keeping your offense.
- 7:46Run the field, run it effectively, play action, pass,
- 7:51take your shots when you get an opportunity.
- 7:54I still think it's going to be a high scoring game because when
- 7:56Stafford gets the ball in his hands, it's very tough to stop
- 8:00those guys. Now how will Puka Nakua play if
- 8:03it's wind chill? Is you know, zero that I can't
- 8:07answer for you? Had a good game last year
- 8:09against Philadelphia as they were right there late in that
- 8:12one. The only team that was able to
- 8:13push the Eagles in the playoffs a year ago.
- 8:16They're loaded over there. Yet their past defense is kind
- 8:19of their their weak point if you will.
- 8:21Is it as simple as Caleb Williams?
- 8:23Do they need 4 quarters of good Caleb Williams?
- 8:25Can they get by with two good quarters of Caleb in this one?
- 8:29Or do we need to see a complete 60 minute effort?
- 8:32Well, it depends. Like the first drive the Bears
- 8:35had, they took seven and. 1/2 did.
- 8:37Rock. They just didn't get in the end
- 8:39zone, but they kicked the field goal and then the Bears defense
- 8:43did a lousy job in that first half.
- 8:46I didn't think it was on Caleb. I thought it was the defense not
- 8:51allowing the Bears offense to, you know, have chance to get out
- 8:55on the field again because Green Bay was grinding out these
- 8:58possessions and getting 7 out of all of them.
- 9:01So for me it you're going to run the ball with Swift and Menon
- 9:06guy and then you've got to hit your big shots.
- 9:08When you get a shot to hit DJ Moore, you got to hit him.
- 9:13He had a big drop late in the game on Saturday.
- 9:16He redeemed himself with the game-winning touchdown.
- 9:19Really did good stuff anymore. Football TC.
- 9:22Yeah, I don't want to talk about baseball.
- 9:24Baseball will come in April. I want to talk baseball.
- 9:26Coming in 5 minutes, I've been. On the air for 20 years, on 21
- 9:30years now on the radio, the bears have been good twice.
- 9:33Can we talk about the bears? For five more minutes, but I'm
- 9:35doing some Cubs. But fire away, alright?
- 9:38I've got to get your perspective on the Ben Johnson Lafleur
- 9:40thing. There's been plenty of
- 9:42misinformation out there. The first blow by that we saw in
- 9:45the first meeting all the way back to Ben Johnson's initial
- 9:47press conference. So you got to fill us on the
- 9:49details cap. Obviously, you're keeping a
- 9:51close eye on that. I'm sure it's been a huge
- 9:53conversation piece over there. Ben Johnson.
- 9:56Silverman. Oh, absolutely, beloved, give us
- 9:58your perspective on what has been transpiring not just on
- 10:02Sunday, Saturday night between these two coaches.
- 10:05They don't like each other, and I think that's great for the
- 10:08sport and great for the rivalry. I had zero problem with Ben
- 10:14Johnson saying F the Packers, F the Packers.
- 10:17I had zero problem with that because you're talking to
- 10:21someone who was a college coach. I was an NBA scout.
- 10:24This stuff has been set in locker rooms.
- 10:27Over 40 years, it has and. Probably way before that, but
- 10:31that's as far back as I go. It just wasn't recorded and put
- 10:34on social media. That's just a fact I heard.
- 10:38JJ Waco. Why do people have a problem
- 10:41that he said that? Because somebody said, well, my
- 10:44kid heard that. And what?
- 10:46Ben Johnson's job is not to parent your children.
- 10:49Sorry. His job is to try and win
- 10:51football games and beat his arch rival.
- 10:54Your job is to parent your kids, so I had zero problem with it.
- 10:59I heard JJ Watts say the same thing.
- 11:01I heard Boomer Sison say the same thing.
- 11:05Good for the sport, good for the rivalry.
- 11:08They don't like each other. I think that's awesome.
- 11:12It's great. And, and it's dovetailed into a
- 11:14media. I don't know if it's a battle or
- 11:15not, but your colleague Mark Silverman went off on Chuck
- 11:19Schwersky. Is that his name?
- 11:21Yeah. He's the boy for the.
- 11:22Bulls, the Bulls announcer, he went off on him yesterday.
- 11:25Cap. He did.
- 11:27He did. Look, Sylvie's my teammate.
- 11:30He's also my neighbor. He was my intern and my producer
- 11:34at WGN before he left to start his great career at ESPN.
- 11:39Sylvie does not suffer fools lightly.
- 11:41I'm just telling you, Sylvie heard Chuck Swersky firing on
- 11:46Ben Johnson and said, OK, that's it.
- 11:49I'm going to air The Dirty laundry that I know about you
- 11:53and I get I don't really deal with Chuck.
- 11:57I'm not around the bulls, but I if I see him, I'm cordial, say
- 12:01hello. But Sylvie had receipts and he
- 12:05wanted to play those receipts. They were legit.
- 12:09And so I have 0 issues what Sylvie does.
- 12:12I got to, I got to bring up your owner because he takes a lot of
- 12:15arrows. I'm not sure which which bear
- 12:19was hurt, but I think it was Edwards when he was down in the
- 12:21tunnel and. George Mccaskey ran his helmet.
- 12:25Yes, I thought you know what, you don't see too many owners
- 12:27doing that thing. Now the owner of the of the
- 12:29Niners went and got a bottle for Kittle, which you know was in
- 12:33and of itself. But, and apparently Mccaskey
- 12:36spent, I don't know if he bought everybody's Uber that was going
- 12:39to the game, but apparently, you know, dipped into his own
- 12:43pockets and granted they are deep, but Mccaskey was some with
- 12:46some PR points this past weekend Cap.
- 12:49You know, it's funny that the perception of the organization
- 12:53had always been the Bears are cheap and actually wasn't
- 12:56exactly true. Because we want to sign Julius
- 12:59Peppers for 92,000,000, get it done.
- 13:02We want to do this, get it done. He he's just the every man.
- 13:07He sits in coach and the team charter.
- 13:10He's in the middle of the plane instead of in first class.
- 13:13And then this dude, Kevin Warren, who I like, rolls in as
- 13:17the new team president. Kevin Warren said it's not a
- 13:20badge of honor that we fly Dan Quinn in the interview and put
- 13:25him in a middle seat in the last row in coach.
- 13:29Dan Quinn's a big man. He's 65.
- 13:32That is not how an 8 to $10 billion corporation comports
- 13:37itself. The other 31 teams, either the
- 13:40owner has his own jet or they charter a plane.
- 13:44And here the Bears put him on Southwest in coach, I mean.
- 13:49With the C ticket. Yeah, he's in the back of the
- 13:53plane, in the last row, in the middle.
- 13:55He's going to interview for, you know, a $7,000,000 job.
- 13:58Just stupid. And I like George.
- 14:01I think George is all about wanting to win, just not knowing
- 14:05how to win. And Kevin Warren said those days
- 14:07are over. That's it.
- 14:09And so Darnell Wright is sick. We're going to play in San
- 14:12Francisco a few weeks ago. And guess what?
- 14:15Darnell Wright stayed home, slept Sunday morning and they
- 14:19got him on a chartered jet and flew him to California so that
- 14:23he could play in the game that night.
- 14:25Business is being done differently, perception of the
- 14:29organization is different and George is a very good person.
- 14:33That's important. They're actually being a billion
- 14:37dollar corporation and actually acting like 1.
- 14:40And that goes a long ways 2. Different things.
- 14:42Two injury questions for you want to start, what they're
- 14:45going to do. Ozzie Trapillo, who played
- 14:47really well before the injury, How about him getting off the
- 14:50field, too, just limping his way over so they didn't have to use
- 14:53that final time out. He's lost, though, for the
- 14:55season with the ruptured patellar tendon.
- 14:57What does the offensive line look like now this week?
- 15:00And then secondly, Garden Johnson coming back from the
- 15:03concussion, Anticipate he's going to play.
- 15:06Have not yet heard that he's cleared the protocol in terms of
- 15:10being able to play Ozzie Trippillo.
- 15:13He's done for a long time. Torn patellar tendon, ruptured
- 15:16is a bad injury, really tough injury.
- 15:20I would think Theo Benedette will get the start at left
- 15:23tackle. I also believe this offseason
- 15:26they will upgrade at left tackle.
- 15:28They have to. The window now to win a Super
- 15:31Bowl is open with that quarterback and that coach and
- 15:34that old line and some really good skill position players.
- 15:38They're going to have to upgrade at left tackle and I expect that
- 15:42to happen. Braxton Jones is off IR and he's
- 15:46back. He's not a great player either.
- 15:48So they are going to have to go out this offseason and get a big
- 15:52time left tackle. Fascinating stuff.
- 15:54What are you doing? You're laying the points, taking
- 15:57the taking the points. What are you going to bet the
- 15:58game? Of course I will.
- 16:01So damning and why I am going to take the points with the Bears.
- 16:07I'll put a same game together without an outcome just off of
- 16:11prop bets won't go crazy and I'll sit back and relax and
- 16:15watch. Good stuff.
- 16:16Cubs Con this weekend as well. Let's talk Cubs.
- 16:19We got that in the middle of the game of all things, the Bregman
- 16:22news breaks. I get it, What's a different
- 16:24sport? But it's just kind of felt the
- 16:25odd that you're making that big splash because that's what Cubs
- 16:28fans have been bitching about. They haven't made a big splash.
- 16:31They did this past week. So the trickle down, so two
- 16:34party, your thoughts on Bregman and now what the infield is
- 16:37going to look like? Assuming Nico is going to be
- 16:39there, is he going to be there? Does it make sense for them to
- 16:42trade them? How about those two, Cap?
- 16:46So on the Bregman thing, I think it's awesome.
- 16:49Love it. They've long wanted this guy
- 16:51acting like a multi billion dollar franchise, a big market
- 16:54team. Super cool to see.
- 16:56That's AB Nico Horner wants an extension.
- 17:01His contract is up after the 2026 season and I've been told
- 17:05that the number he's asking for is 5 for 90 million.
- 17:09If you are not going to give that to him, and I'm not sure I
- 17:13would, you have your #1 prospect as a position player in Matt
- 17:18Shaw. He was a Gold Glove finalist for
- 17:21third base. Bregman's now got his spot.
- 17:24If you move Matt Shaw a second and you trade Horner, that also
- 17:29he makes 11,000,000. Matt Shaw makes 850 grand.
- 17:33That should allow you to spend to get another outfielder,
- 17:38whether that's Cody Bellinger or somebody less expensive.
- 17:43You should be able to get somebody to play right field
- 17:48because you really don't have a right fielder.
- 17:50Suzuki, I like him as my DH, but you got by a stereo stair as
- 17:54well. They need another outfielder.
- 17:56Yeah, and, and, and what would the whole, what would you get
- 17:59for Nico Horner prospects? It means you want prospects.
- 18:04Depends how good the prospect is.
- 18:07Depends. So if you told me I can get him
- 18:10and I was a really good outfielder that I can get in
- 18:14return, that can come in and play right away.
- 18:16All right, I'm interested. If it's just prospects, OK, then
- 18:20I'm going to go take the savings and I want to spend them.
- 18:24Cubs have been known to be pretty cautious with injuries
- 18:27here with this front office and the way they've done things.
- 18:29Certainly recently we've talked a lot about Justin Steele and
- 18:32his return. I know it might be dependent
- 18:35also on the way things are going, the way the staff is
- 18:37going, if there's injuries and and the like there.
- 18:40But if they could in a perfect world don't have to deal with
- 18:43injuries, the starters are all doing fine.
- 18:45What is the perfect setup for Justin Steele and bringing him
- 18:48back this season? Sometime in mid June you know
- 18:54he's already throwing. Says he feels good.
- 18:58I just I would rather he not come back throwing in cold
- 19:01weather to get started. Yeah.
- 19:03Good point. So if you said, you know what,
- 19:05it's June 10th and it's 82°, let's if the doctors have
- 19:10cleared them, let's go. They've got, by my count, at
- 19:14least nine guys that could make a Major League start for them.
- 19:17I'm not saying all belong in the rotation, but if you count up
- 19:21Steel and Wiggins and Ben Brown and Javier Assad and Matthew
- 19:25Boyd and Colin Ray and Shota Imanaga and Cade Horton and
- 19:30Edward Cabrera, there's a lot of dudes that can start there.
- 19:34So I think they've done a really good job at adding to their
- 19:37depth. I'm looking at a picture right
- 19:39now, Justin Steele in Arizona at the complex actually throwing
- 19:42right now. As we speak.
- 19:44Love it. Yeah, absolutely.
- 19:46I mean, not it's, it's not amount or anything.
- 19:48He's playing long toss, but he's throwing the ball so that that
- 19:51that's that's something good stuff buddy.
- 19:53Appreciate it. Good luck to your squad.
- 19:56Mainly, it's not without the realm of possibility that the
- 19:59NFC goes through Chicago next weekend.
- 20:01Which is. Yeah, if San Francisco beats
- 20:04Seattle and the Bears beat the Rams, we're hosting the NFC
- 20:07title game. Unbelievable good stuff, Capper.
- 20:10Thank you pal. Hey, boy.
- 20:12Good to talk to you, David Kaplan.
- 20:13And that would mean we would get that rematch.
- 20:15Yes. Of Niners and Bears, which I
- 20:17think we both think is maybe the most entertaining game, how many
- 20:21of it did we come up with? A180107, Not 81?
- 20:24Two. 172. 270, yes, 272 regular season games throughout the
- 20:30year. Good stuff with Cappy.
- 20:31We shall see. 3 1/2 is the number.
- 20:34Is that what we're at right now? Saw some fours in the market
- 20:37when I was looking earlier today.
- 20:39Hadn't taken a peek lately at WADRI.
- 20:41Well, I'm doing so as we speak. 3 1/2 There are there is a four
- 20:45super books of four, so is Caesar's, but yeah, everybody
- 20:49else is 3 1/2. 4 of that teaser looks a little more enticing
- 20:55when you get the Bears plus 10, yeah.
- 20:58I don't know what to think. You can throw the ball on this
- 21:00team. I will not be shocked at all if
- 21:02your Bears are hosting the NFC Championship.
- 21:05I wouldn't. I won't be.
- 21:06Not at all. This team that was tooth and
- 21:11nail to beat the Raiders, Yeah. Right.
- 21:13Has helped played in many ones and here we are and it's special
- 21:18over there. And even if they're not hosting,
- 21:20they could be very easily jumping on a plane going
- 21:22Seattle. Sign up for that.
- 21:25I think anybody would have taken that before the year.
- 21:27God, yeah. By the way, at one point this
- 21:29summer, he could have got Seattle to win the Super Bowl at
- 21:3160 to 1. No way in the summer, I think.
- 21:34It was that. Big of a price.
- 21:36I think it was maybe shortly after the draft.
- 21:38Do you have one? No, I got the Rams 1 though that
- 21:41you talked me into. Thank you for that.
- 21:43Yeah. I think I am at 3028 maybe?
- 21:46It was 28 when I finally jumped aboard after you talked about it
- 21:50for about a week. Like OK, OK, OK.
- 21:53But I don't. You didn't buy any chargers, did
- 21:56you? No, thank goodness.
- 21:58You're not kidding. Bengals.
- 22:00Nope. I got lots of those too.
- 22:01What? Do you do with those tickets?
- 22:03You know what those are? Not kidding aside, I can't wait
- 22:05to bet them again. You're jumping out the Chargers?
- 22:08No, I'm going to bet the Lions. Yeah, Ian.
- 22:11No. OK, I'm going to bet the
- 22:13Bengals. Why?
- 22:14Because they Joe Burrell cannot be injured again.
- 22:18Really. No, Nope.
- 22:20He's he's had his fill. I thought you said that last.
- 22:22Year I probably did, but now I mean it and.
- 22:26They're fixing the offensive line.
- 22:27They're going to do that. They are OK.
- 22:29They're going to do that for sure.
- 22:32The Cincinnati Bengals, those Cincinnati inept organization,
- 22:35they're going to figure it out this time.
- 22:36But I've divorced myself from the LA Chargers.
- 22:39No you haven't. Don't lie to people.
- 22:40Probably not but but I'm I. Can hear it already.
- 22:44Justin Herbert and I are divorced, Little Puff.
- 22:48You know who looks good? Let me.
- 22:49Grab this phone, log in and away we go.
- 22:52All right way we go to try and give somebody $1000.
- 22:55Let's do that, shall we? Head to KX and o.com right now.
- 22:58The keyword this hour is credit. Credit at KX and o.com, your
- 23:03chance to win $1000. More keywords throughout the
- 23:07afternoon. More NFL.
- 23:09When we come back, Vinny Iyer from The Sporting News will join
- 23:13us as we get into the divisional games with Vinny Miller and
- 23:16Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 23:31I'm Hillary Congdon, Welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 23:34Trenton Ken with you until 2:00. Dante Moore is live on Sports
- 23:39Center. We have no sound because we're
- 23:43doing a radio show. Breaking news.
- 23:45Is he going? Staying is.
- 23:47What does it say? We'll return to Oregon next
- 23:50season. So what does this mean for
- 23:51Rayola? He'll do what Dante Moore did,
- 23:55sit for a year, learn behind a guy that's on his way to the
- 23:58NFL, cool your jets and move on. But you saw all the jokes out
- 24:03there. As soon as Mahomes had to put on
- 24:05that Texas Tech jersey after or had to put out the Oregon
- 24:09jersey, you knew where your role is going to end up.
- 24:13The portal's not closed yet and I don't know if he has signed
- 24:15his financial. Agreement.
- 24:16Not tomorrow, it's Friday. But he hasn't.
- 24:18If he hasn't signed that agreement, he.
- 24:20Can still move on, should he? Or does it make more sense for
- 24:24this guy that we see? He's got an incredible arm, but
- 24:27there is a lot of development that is needed for Rayola, for
- 24:30him to become an NFL quarterback.
- 24:31It's got to be incredibly difficult, though.
- 24:34To go from being the guy from the time he set foot on campus
- 24:37and starting every start to knowing that all of a sudden
- 24:41you're going to sit and watch. That's got to be tough.
- 24:44Sure, but you can talk to the guy that did it.
- 24:48He's right there. Dante Moore very well could be a
- 24:52top three, top five selection in this draft, but he's coming
- 24:55back. But to do that, he learned.
- 24:57I'm sure it was difficult for Dante Moore, who everybody had
- 25:00targeted for Michigan and then he went to UCLA and he played as
- 25:03a freshman there. But he knew for the betterment
- 25:06of him and now he's put himself in position for an incredible
- 25:09payday. Sitting for a year made the most
- 25:12sense. Swallow your pride.
- 25:13Don't go to a terrible situation where you're going to get hurt
- 25:17behind a bad offensive line, you're going to be injured
- 25:19again. Do what's the betterment of your
- 25:22football future. That might be a developmental
- 25:25gear for Eola. I don't think what what we have
- 25:28learned about his personality, though.
- 25:29I don't think it's going to happen.
- 25:31I don't think it is either. I just, I, I can't.
- 25:34I would be very surprised if that's the case that he's
- 25:37willing to to do that. I, I, I don't know.
- 25:41We'll see. What do you think?
- 25:43He's an NFL quarterback. Who?
- 25:45Dante Morgan, I mean, if he, he would be probably the
- 25:48presumptive second pick in the draft by a quarterback needy
- 25:52team. If you are that team, if you're
- 25:54The Jets, is this the guy you want?
- 25:56Well, it's The Jets. Well, it's The Jets, right?
- 25:59They could draft whoever. They'd probably find a way to
- 26:03screw it up. You talk yourself into a lot of
- 26:06things. See, I don't, I don't think he's
- 26:08an NFL quarterback personally. I don't think the guy he sat
- 26:12behind last year isn't NFL quarterback Gabriel.
- 26:16Right, I never saw that. I didn't either.
- 26:18It's 5 foot 9. That's just it.
- 26:21I just he never had that feeling.
- 26:24It was completely different than even Bo Dicks.
- 26:26And and Colin Murray doesn't. He's 59 and he's way more
- 26:29athletic than this cast. Yeah, yeah, Dylan Gabriel, he
- 26:32can move a little bit, but in the NFL, small guy, that
- 26:36stature, you got to be a different kind of mover.
- 26:37I don't think that. I don't think he is.
- 26:39I think he's making the right decision.
- 26:40Oh, absolutely, yeah. But I'm not so sure.
- 26:43He's, like I said, the same about Brock Purdy, right?
- 26:46Well, a lot of people did, yes. Yeah.
- 26:47You were not alone on No, no, no, of course not.
- 26:51And even plenty in Story County didn't think that he was going
- 26:54to be playing Yeah, at that level.
- 26:56No, I'm with you. Well, we'll see, but more coming
- 26:58back. So Riola, what does this mean
- 27:00for him? It doesn't look as though we're
- 27:02going to get Vinny Iyer. So let's you and I tackle these
- 27:05games on their own. Which one are you more confident
- 27:08in? Which one have you figured out
- 27:10there's no doubt in your mind X is going to win this game and
- 27:13move on? None of them.
- 27:14None of. Them I have no confidence in any
- 27:17of these four games at this moment that is definitive put in
- 27:20a bet, lock it in. I'm going to dig in my heels
- 27:23this week and there's nothing that's going to change my
- 27:25opinion. Same to Arnold, there's nothing
- 27:27so. That's why the Niners can beat
- 27:28the the Seahawks. Absolutely.
- 27:31Go back to the 13, three-game. He made two big third down
- 27:35throws in that game. Not.
- 27:36Very many. That was it.
- 27:38It was bad. Problem for the 49ers is their
- 27:41offense was bad, and the Seattle defense had a lot to say about
- 27:44that too. Seattle's defense elite.
- 27:47I trust Shanahan too, I really do that I like McDonald.
- 27:50Though. I do too.
- 27:51Yeah, absolutely. But Shanahan, what he did last
- 27:55week in Philly against that defense, and we know that
- 27:57defense is still really good. And to be able to know you're
- 28:00limited and then in the middle of the game, you lose Kittle,
- 28:02one of your few remaining weapons this side of Christian
- 28:05McCaffrey, you lose that. To be able to manufacture some
- 28:09scores, you go with the wide receiver pass.
- 28:11We're going to do some different things here.
- 28:13I just thought it was a master class of not putting up 600
- 28:18yards in total offense, but understanding your limitations,
- 28:21yet still being able to do enough to find ways to move the
- 28:24football, get your guys out there, making a few plays and
- 28:28doing just enough to get there. And I think he can do it again.
- 28:31And better job certainly than they did.
- 28:33They looked just dead in the water.
- 28:35And I was on the way back from Iowa City listening to that
- 28:38game. But you can just hear like the
- 28:41Westwood one, guys are like questioning kind of what what
- 28:43was happening with the 49ers that night.
- 28:45You saw it a lot closer than I did.
- 28:48I don't anticipate we're going to see the same kind of
- 28:49performance out of San Francisco.
- 28:51By the way, Speaking of Westwood one, we will broadcast two games
- 28:54this weekend, the early game which is Buffalo and Denver and
- 28:57then the nightcap we'll have the Rams and the Bears on Des Moines
- 29:02Sports Station. One O 6.3 kicks.
- 29:04You know, you mentioned Kyle Shanahan, that 2013 Mike, Mike
- 29:09Shanahan tree. Have you seen the coaches that
- 29:11come off of that tree? Matt Lafleur, Mike McDaniel,
- 29:15Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan were all assistant coaches on
- 29:19that team. Not.
- 29:20Too shabby 2. 1013 and superimposed that off and I
- 29:24don't know if this is true or not, but I couldn't come up with
- 29:27anybody. Somebody posted yesterday, 19
- 29:30years Mike Tomlin was the was the head coach of the Pittsburgh
- 29:34Steelers. Does he have a branch of a of a
- 29:36coaching tree? I don't know.
- 29:38I guess I don't follow assistance that closely to
- 29:41really know what it looks like. But in comparison to that, yeah,
- 29:45we hear about that tree often, certainly not no comp there.
- 29:49And there's nobody that makes a whole lot of sense.
- 29:51But I, but to just to your point on Kyle Shanahan, he's a he's,
- 29:55he's a brilliant coach. Yes, he's a brilliant coach.
- 29:59It's a big number, man, 7 1/2. It's almost, it's almost.
- 30:04You almost have to take the points, don't you?
- 30:07Speaking of the Steelers, and there's something I want to get
- 30:11to, but also think back, here's the offensive coordinators that
- 30:14Tomlin had. Arthur Smith, Matt Canada, Randy
- 30:19Fincher, Todd Haley, Brazarians. There you go, there's one.
- 30:25And he left there to become a head coach.
- 30:27He did. Ken Wizenhunt also left to be a
- 30:30coach. Mike Malarkey.
- 30:31He got an opportunity. Kevin Gilbride, Tennessee.
- 30:35Ray Sherman. Now we're going way back and
- 30:37we're going back before the Tomlin days.
- 30:38Chan Gailey still offensive lately, though, as more than
- 30:43anything. It's been the quarterback she's
- 30:45had kind of or hasn't. Had right.
- 30:48Do you blame the offensive coordinator?
- 30:49Do you blame the quarterback? Plenty of blame to go all
- 30:52around. The way to end.
- 30:54I think Pittsburgh Steelers fans are in for rude awakening
- 30:58because this team, the way it's constructed, they need a rebuild
- 31:02in the worst way. Because when you take a look at
- 31:05what's left, A, the secondary is old.
- 31:08B, they don't have a quarterback again.
- 31:11The offensive line was not great by any means.
- 31:15Jalen Warren, They found a running back.
- 31:16Gainwell, you like him? DK Metcalf, Apparently he's not
- 31:19a very good route runner. That's the knock on him.
- 31:22Well, when you're 240 lbs. Right.
- 31:23And you can run like that. But Valdez, again, he's, you
- 31:26know, obviously in an upgrade at the receiver position.
- 31:29I see Thielen just retired today.
- 31:31Not that he was the answer, but but he walked out.
- 31:34I wonder how Vikings fans feel about him because he crapped on
- 31:37the organization when he walked out the door.
- 31:39How so? Because he got to Pittsburgh and
- 31:41he said I was finally, I'm paraphrasing here.
- 31:43I wish I had the quote, but he crapped on Minnesota because
- 31:47he's oh, it's he's finally in a place that I don't know,
- 31:49believes in football. He left a a team that finished
- 31:538:00 and 9:00 to go to a team that finished nine and eight
- 31:57right and caught what, 5 passes maybe in his time there.
- 32:00But he could have walked out the door in his home state, A state
- 32:03where he paid his dues, paid his dues to get on the team, worked
- 32:07his way into a star on that football team, went to Carolina,
- 32:11came back and you're going to retire with your state, state
- 32:15you grew up in NFL franchise and you crapped on them in the way
- 32:19out the door. How do you feel about a Vikings
- 32:21fans? This is the quote, and maybe I
- 32:23read it differently when he was asked about leaving Minnesota.
- 32:27Extremely tough. It really wore on me mentally.
- 32:30Just excited to have an opportunity.
- 32:31I'm very thankful for this organization.
- 32:33Speaking of the Steelers, the people in the locker.
- 32:36Room. See, there's more to it there.
- 32:38There was more to it than the one that I'm thinking of.
- 32:40There was more to it. He he went on to extol the
- 32:43virtues of Pittsburgh, seemingly at the expense of Minnesota.
- 32:47He'll be blowing that stupid horn in a couple of years.
- 32:50It'll be fine. What do they call that thing?
- 32:52I don't know. The stupid horn.
- 32:52That's what I called the stupid horn.
- 32:55He'll be blowing the stupid horn and he'll be back out there.
- 32:57He's one of them. As much as we love Iowans here
- 33:00and any connection to the state of Iowa, we, we use it all the
- 33:03time. Those people up north, they take
- 33:06it to another level. They take those long connections
- 33:09and they, he's one of them. He is going to be welcomed back.
- 33:12He is going to be beloved. He's going to get a loud cheer
- 33:15and he'll blow the stupid horn and.
- 33:16He'll blow the stupid horns. And who will be the quarterback
- 33:19that takes the field? He's probably in high school
- 33:22right now. He's.
- 33:24He's certainly not getting his male in Minnesota.
- 33:26Let let me ask this question differently.
- 33:28Who will be whoever blows the stupid horn in week one?
- 33:31Who will be the quarterback that takes the field or their first
- 33:33home game? Scott Studwell will be the one
- 33:35blowing the stupid horn. Let's see who's.
- 33:38Going to be the They're moving on.
- 33:40They are. They're bringing in a veteran,
- 33:43maybe not a very good one, but like a Justin Fields type
- 33:46somebody. Oh my God, I know.
- 33:47But it'll be something like that, somebody that is not the
- 33:52automatic starter, going to push JJ, a veteran, her cousins.
- 33:57Well, does Atlanta want to watch watch him?
- 33:59Leave. I don't think so.
- 34:00I don't think, I think they have their starter.
- 34:02I think they do and it's not the one they drafted. 10th overall
- 34:05and Michael Panics. The injuries are piling up and
- 34:08the GM has been fired and the head coach has been fired.
- 34:12We will see. One final note, you're talking
- 34:14about coaching trees and the Steelers shot.
- 34:17Bill Cower was 37 when he was hired, though he looked like he
- 34:19was like 52. He was 37 when he was hired.
- 34:22Mike Toblin, he was young. He was 37.
- 34:24Also, there's a young coach that is getting a lot of interviews
- 34:28there are with connections to this state.
- 34:30Speaking of connections, Nate Shield House, new coach of the
- 34:35Pittsburgh Steelers. Well, they hire you.
- 34:37What did you say? You.
- 34:37I didn't know this. Noel was young.
- 34:40And in his 30s, they were all the 30s.
- 34:42Yes, I believe. I believe Noel was, and I know
- 34:44the last two were 37 when they were hired.
- 34:48She'll house. But they've gone.
- 34:49But they've gone defense, have they not?
- 34:51It's been defensive coaches. And it maybe they're ready for a
- 34:54change. Well, they need a quarterback,
- 34:56right? And somebody to develop.
- 34:59And the quarterback's not in this year's draft.
- 35:01I just don't think it is Nate. Shield House, Pittsburgh
- 35:04Steelers head coach. Clip and save.
- 35:06If I would have told you that three years ago, I've been left
- 35:10off the airwaves. Yeah, you would have.
- 35:11And here we are. Uh huh.
- 35:13Is that the that list that you came up with the the prices to
- 35:20be the the odds to become the next?
- 35:22Steelers. Oh yeah.
- 35:22Yeah. Was he on it?
- 35:23He was not. No, this was from offshore.
- 35:26Let me pull it up here. It was.
- 35:28Remember who is the betting favorite in that, by the way?
- 35:30Yeah, Brian Flores. Oh, yeah, Flores was the betting
- 35:32favorite. Marcus Freeman was on the list
- 35:33again. He's not.
- 35:34I don't think he's. Leaving the no, no, and it's
- 35:36offshore. What can he get down?
- 35:39Can he actually get paid? Who knows about that?
- 35:42Some other names on the list, Jesse Minter, a lot of buzz
- 35:44there. Speaking of defensive guys,
- 35:46Chris Shula, he's 5 to 1. Defensive guy in his 30s.
- 35:50Robert Sala 8 to 1. I like Antoine Randall L again,
- 35:55with an offensive guy like the way that he's built him way up.
- 35:58Mike McDaniel 18 to 1 take a long shot.
- 36:00It doesn't seem exactly like a Pittsburgh.
- 36:02Type of guy. You're not sure when you if
- 36:04you're going to get paid when you bet over there.
- 36:06So we shall see. All right, Trent, plays of the
- 36:08day are coming up next. Circus sports sponsor those
- 36:11pretty good night of basketball tonight starting at 5:30.
- 36:14If you can't be in front of your TV and you're in central Iowa,
- 36:17you can hear the game down the hall from us on News Radio 1040.
- 36:20WHO? News Radio 1040 WHO for that
- 36:23one? I'm guessing they probably
- 36:25dolphin. Bobby, take the air 4/30 an hour
- 36:29ahead of time. All right, let's get Thunder Joe
- 36:30in here real quick. Joe, before we got to go to
- 36:33break. How are you?
- 36:35Hey, perfect. First off, it's good to see SGA
- 36:38get up, climb the ladder and he sure went in the next week last
- 36:40night. Hey, if Matt Ryan wants to get
- 36:43in there and straight Kirk Cousins and maybe package him
- 36:46with the Tyler Algier, keep in mind they don't have a first
- 36:48round draft pick and they're going to need to get one.
- 36:52Tenex isn't the guy, but if you want to package Cousins with an
- 36:54Algier and a future draft pick to get a first round draft pick,
- 36:57I'm OK with that. Yeah, if they gave it up for two
- 36:59guys that started right, they traded with the Rams, they got a
- 37:03third round pick and they drafted somebody in the first
- 37:05round, I can't remember his name, and they threw in the 3rd
- 37:07and both of them turned in to be starters, correct?
- 37:10Yeah, the the kid. The kid from Tennessee?
- 37:12Pierce. That's the guy they drafted high
- 37:14and then they go in. So a guy in the secondary maybe
- 37:17is. I don't.
- 37:19Remember, yeah, the, the, the, the kid from Kansas, Kobe
- 37:22Bryant. Bryant, right, Yep, you're
- 37:23right. Both of them turned out to be
- 37:25pretty good, pretty good picks and we shall see good stuff Joe,
- 37:28thank you. Appreciate the call and you're
- 37:30right, you're your Thunder back in the win column after the
- 37:34Spurs have been taking it to him.
- 37:36We'll take your time out. Trends, plays of the day next
- 37:38Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 37:42Hi. Miller Condon Final segment
- 37:49Circus Sports sponsors this each and every day.
- 37:51Trends Plays of the day. Iowa getting 10 1/2 as they take
- 37:58on Purdue tonight on the road. BTN with the triple header.
- 38:01Illinois Northwestern follows in the nightcap.
- 38:04I'm guessing you'll be watching Michigan and and Washington
- 38:07late, yes? What are you betting on tonight?
- 38:10More importantly. Well, I grabbed Purdue right
- 38:12when the opener came out at 9 1/2.
- 38:14Too much ugliness in Mackie historically for me to get real
- 38:17excited about this one. I know there was what Fran had a
- 38:20couple of good games there, but for the most part it's been
- 38:22blowout after blowout. What about the total in that
- 38:25game? 144 1/2?
- 38:26That seems like a big number to me.
- 38:29That's pretty is I were going to score in the 70s, No 60s.
- 38:32Probably. Maybe a high 50s.
- 38:34I mean, maybe top. Purdue might score 80.
- 38:36I mean, then they'll probably hit 15 threes.
- 38:39Well then and and actually the last few games, the Purdue
- 38:42defense has not been very good. They just gave up what, 85
- 38:45against Penn State at home? Purdue defense not.
- 38:50Glad I don't bet games. Not a vintage Matt Painter
- 38:53defense up until this point. How do you see this one going?
- 38:59Well, not well. Not well, I think that's right.
- 39:04I think this thing is going to get very, very ugly this
- 39:07evening. Got a couple of plays for you
- 39:09along with the Boil Makers here tonight.
- 39:11I'm going to play Cal late night against the Dookies.
- 39:14There's another fun late night game for you.
- 39:16Going to grab the price there. The 12 1/2 that is out there.
- 39:19Give me Missouri on the money line basically, even against
- 39:21Auburn at home tonight. And finally, fade the doggies,
- 39:25Drake. Yeah, give me SIU.
- 39:28Minus the five and a half all. Right, so that will do it for
- 39:31us. Transplays it today sponsored by
- 39:32Circa Sports, Miller and Compton, weekdays noon to two on
- 39:36the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
