Transcript
- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Thursday.
- 0:16It's the 13th of November and I am delighted that you have
- 0:20chosen to tap on play and invite me into your day.
- 0:23Whether it's just starting out, whether you are just finishing
- 0:26up, whether you're getting ready for the day ahead, whether
- 0:29you're driving, whether you're running or whether you're lying
- 0:32comfy in bed. So good that you have chosen
- 0:36this moment to tap on play and to finish off this book of First
- 0:40Thessalonians with me. And of course, this is a Paul
- 0:43epistle, which means there is going to be plenty of personal
- 0:47greetings and advice as Paul wraps up.
- 0:50And yes, this might be a trilogy of authors, but Gee, it still
- 0:54has a very Pauline flavour to it.
- 0:56So we are going to read this last chapter.
- 0:59Holy Spirit, open our hearts, open our ears, and shape us by
- 1:05Your Word. Let's do it, friends.
- 1:09Let's read together. First Thessalonians chapter 5.
- 1:24Now concerning how and when all of this will happen.
- 1:27Dear brothers and sisters, we don't really need to write you,
- 1:31for we know quite well that the day of the Lord's return will
- 1:34come unexpectedly, like a thief. In the night, when people are
- 1:39saying everything is peaceful and secure, then disaster will
- 1:44fall on them as suddenly as a pregnant woman's labour pains
- 1:48begin, and there will be no escape.
- 1:52But you aren't in the dark about these things, dear brothers and
- 1:55sisters, and you won't be surprised when the day of the
- 1:58Lord comes like a thief, for you are all children of the light
- 2:02and of the day. We don't belong to darkness and
- 2:06night, so be on your guard, not asleep like the others.
- 2:10Stay alert and be clear headed. Night is the time when people
- 2:15sleep and drinkers get drunk. But let us who live in the light
- 2:20be clear headed, protected by the armour of faith and love and
- 2:25wearing is our helmet, the confidence of our salvation.
- 2:30For God chose to save us through our Lord Jesus Christ, not to
- 2:34pour out His anger on us. Christ died for us, so that
- 2:39whether we are dead or alive, when He returns, we can live
- 2:44with Him forever. So encourage each other and
- 2:48build each other up, just as you were already doing.
- 2:53Dear brothers and sisters, honour those who are your
- 2:55leaders in the Lord's work. They work hard among you and
- 2:59give you spiritual guidance. Show them great respect and hold
- 3:04hearted love because of their work and live peacefully with
- 3:08each other. Brothers and sisters, we urge
- 3:12you to warn those who are lazy, encourage those who are timid.
- 3:17Take care of those who are weak. Be patient with everyone.
- 3:23See that no one pays back evil for evil, but always try to be
- 3:27good to each other and to all people.
- 3:30Always be joyful. Never stop praying, be thankful
- 3:35in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong
- 3:39to Christ Jesus. Do not stifle the Holy Spirit.
- 3:45Do not scoff at prophecies, but test everything that is said.
- 3:50Hold on to what is good. Stay away from every kind of
- 3:54evil. Now.
- 3:57May the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your
- 4:02whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord
- 4:07Jesus Christ comes again. God will make this happen, for
- 4:12he who calls you is faithful. Dear brothers and sisters, pray
- 4:18for us. Greet all the brothers and
- 4:21sisters with a sacred kiss. I command you in the name of the
- 4:26Lord to read this letter to all the brothers and sisters.
- 4:31May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
- 4:44What a banger of a chapter. Lord, this is so full of gold.
- 4:49I feel like I need to read it again and again and again to
- 4:53soak up your plans for your people who live in community so
- 4:57that we can live with each other and encourage each other.
- 5:01And not only encourage each other, but be encouraged by you
- 5:05and your incredible love for us. Because, as your word says, you
- 5:12did not come here to pour out your anger on us, but to save
- 5:16us. And save us You have.
- 5:20And so we bask in the gloriousness of what you have
- 5:24done for us and your unfathomable grace and goodness.
- 5:31We are your children, grateful and loved, and we just rest in
- 5:37your embrace and pray that you continue to hold us and shape us
- 5:44so that we can live in your love, sharing it with those
- 5:48around us. Thank you Jesus, we pray this in
- 5:53your wonderful name. Amen.
