- 0:00Speaker 1: I think everybody who listens to the show knows that
- 0:02Speaker 1: I love hearing about young people that are doing great
- 0:05Speaker 1: stuff in the community. And this weekend, well it actually
- 0:08Speaker 1: kicks off the SAVO is the NT Swimming Championships.
- 0:12Speaker 2: There are going to be fourteen.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Clubs competing, one hundred and eighty three athletes in total,
- 0:20Speaker 1: and eight of them are from the Darwin Swimming Club.
- 0:22Speaker 2: They're ranging from.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Six years old right up to forty years old, is
- 0:26Speaker 1: what I'm told. Now, I've got two of these wonderful
- 0:29Speaker 1: young athletes in the studio with me this morning. I
- 0:32Speaker 1: have got fifteen year old Taylia Sheridan. Good morning to you. Hi,
- 0:37Speaker 1: great to have you in the studio. And I've also
- 0:39Speaker 1: got thirteen year old sam Rina. Good morning Samy.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Yeah, really good.
- 0:44Speaker 1: It is great to have you both in the studio.
- 0:45Speaker 1: It's a pretty exciting time. Four days of swimming. You
- 0:49Speaker 1: guys pumped?
- 0:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm really excited.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Awesome. What about you, Sam?
- 0:53Speaker 4: I can't wait.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Yeah, it's got and Darwin's got a massive team. Don't
- 0:57Speaker 1: they like? How many members are what we're expecting? Is
- 1:00Speaker 1: it eighty?
- 1:01Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:01Speaker 3: I think you're eighty people swimming in this meet it's wonderful.
- 1:05Speaker 1: It is wonderful to see so many young people taking part. Now, Taylia,
- 1:09Speaker 1: you coach the young kids as well.
- 1:11Speaker 2: You coach my little boy sometimes. Do you like coaching?
- 1:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I really enjoy creaching. It's honestly, I really like
- 1:17Speaker 3: it. It's like being around those little kids and just sharing
- 1:21Speaker 3: some of my experience with them.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I reckon. It's a really great thing to do.
- 1:24Speaker 1: And it's one of the things that I love about
- 1:26Speaker 1: the Darwin Swimming Club is that the older swimmers, the
- 1:29Speaker 1: more experienced swimmers, do actually coach the young ones and
- 1:32Speaker 1: mentor them and help them along as they're sort of
- 1:35Speaker 1: getting into to their swimming journey. Now you two, you're
- 1:39Speaker 1: both competing quite different sorts of races. I know that well, Taylia,
- 1:43Speaker 1: you're more the short distance, the sprints and the backstrokes,
- 1:47Speaker 1: So the fifty and the one hundred backstroker. Your main
- 1:51Speaker 1: areas or your main events? How are you feeling for
- 1:54Speaker 1: this weekend?
- 1:55Speaker 3: Excited? I'm really hoping to get some PBS this weekend.
- 1:58Speaker 3: My backshirt lately it's been a bit questionable, but I'm
- 2:03Speaker 3: really hoping this we can we can get some pps
- 2:05Speaker 3: and stuff.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Yeah, good stuff. Now, how often do you train?
- 2:08Speaker 3: I train every single afternoon and Saturday mornings.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Oh so quite a bit. Yeah, quite a bit of training.
- 2:15Speaker 1: And how does the NT Championships sort of differ for
- 2:18Speaker 1: you as a carnival in terms of trying to be.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Able to get a pep?
- 2:22Speaker 4: Yep?
- 2:23Speaker 2: A bit more competition, I'm assuming.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Yeah, so obviously we have heats and finals, and obviously
- 2:27Speaker 3: the main goals to get into finals and then hopefully
- 2:29Speaker 3: from there maybe get a medal or two and then
- 2:33Speaker 3: like just again getting PEPs and stuff.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Yeah, well in a fifty as well, it's like if
- 2:37Speaker 1: you get if you can get a really good start
- 2:39Speaker 1: and finish hard, you should be able to.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Get one, shouldn't you. Yeah, so hopefully.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Now Sam, what about for you mate, you're the longer distance,
- 2:47Speaker 1: so the eight hundred and the fifteen hundred meter freestyle.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Lots of people will be hearing that and thinking, goodness,
- 2:53Speaker 1: may I can't even imagine swimming that far.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Yeah, it's really it's quite challenging. You're doing it and
- 3:00Speaker 4: it's just you have to finish. Yeah, that's pretty tiring.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Now you are competing as well, or you have previously
- 3:08Speaker 1: at a national level in those events.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Haven't you not Nationals? Yes, because I'm still too young,
- 3:14Speaker 4: but have done interstate?
- 3:16Speaker 2: Is that the aim to get to the nationals? Yeah?
- 3:19Speaker 1: So have you got some specific times that you've got
- 3:21Speaker 1: to try and do at this weekend's carnival?
- 3:24Speaker 4: Yeah? So for the fifteen hundred, I need a drop.
- 3:29Speaker 4: I think maybe twenty second sounds like a lot, but
- 3:32Speaker 4: I've still got a year. Yeah, and it's quite small
- 3:35Speaker 4: when you think about it.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Fifteen that's right, especially for the fifteen hundred. How long
- 3:41Speaker 1: does it take you to swim at fifteen hundred metes?
- 3:44Speaker 4: I think my time now is eighteen minutes and thirty.
- 3:52Speaker 2: You've better find out so you know what your pep
- 3:55Speaker 2: has got to be.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Now what I love about the fifteen hundred as well
- 3:58Speaker 1: as you've even got to have people there ready to.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Count your laps for you. Do you ever forget how
- 4:02Speaker 2: many you've swum?
- 4:05Speaker 4: Yeah? Well, I try to keep count just in case
- 4:08Speaker 4: the person does get it wrong, because it does happen
- 4:11Speaker 4: and people have swam like an extra hundred or.
- 4:14Speaker 2: An all less. That's the last thing, that's the last
- 4:17Speaker 2: thing they want to end.
- 4:18Speaker 4: Up getting disqualified when you've swum that far.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Yeah, so you got to be cautious.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Hey, you got to make sure you know exactly how
- 4:25Speaker 1: it's how you're tracking in terms of those laps.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Now, now you two.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Must be excited about the weekend's carnival, as you've seed, Taylia,
- 4:35Speaker 1: you are, as I understand it.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Are you one of the club captains?
- 4:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm one of the three club capitals.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Now, you guys usually have a bit of a dance
- 4:43Speaker 1: that you do as well, don't you at the carnival?
- 4:45Speaker 2: Have you been practicing yep?
- 4:47Speaker 3: So this year we are doing footlooth as our dance
- 4:49Speaker 3: can be warm up and then hopefully on one of
- 4:51Speaker 3: the days we get to perform it in front of everyone.
- 4:53Speaker 2: All wonderful stuff.
- 4:55Speaker 1: How funn is it to sort of just get to
- 4:57Speaker 1: because I know it's about competition, but how funny is
- 4:59Speaker 1: it just sort of get to hang out with your
- 5:01Speaker 1: mates for four days as well and have a good time.
- 5:06Speaker 4: It's really fun. Like the dance brings everyone together, yep.
- 5:09Speaker 4: And like we did a few practices yesterday and it
- 5:12Speaker 4: was going great.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Well, yeah, all good stuff.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Well, I love that you guys are all prepped for
- 5:18Speaker 1: the weekend. But what I really love is, like I
- 5:20Speaker 1: said right from the get go, young people doing great stuff,
- 5:23Speaker 1: and I think that sport is such an amazing way
- 5:26Speaker 1: for you to be able to, you know, to be
- 5:28Speaker 1: part of the community, help to mentor young people like
- 5:31Speaker 1: you do Talia, which you should be really proud of
- 5:33Speaker 1: with your coaching because it's a great thing to do.
- 5:36Speaker 1: And yeah, I just love what sport does for the community.
- 5:39Speaker 1: So good on you guys. Hope you smash it this
- 5:42Speaker 1: weekend and go the Dar and buffs. Thank you, Thank
- 5:46Speaker 1: you both for coming in this morning and having a
- 5:48Speaker 1: chat with me.
- 5:49Speaker 2: That is Taialia Sheridan there and Sam Rider
