- 2:45Speaker 4: I love your dear friend.
- 2:48Speaker 2: This is a book that feels like a glass of
- 2:50Speaker 2: water when you are parched. Thank you for writing it.
- 2:53Speaker 3: That's such a great.
- 2:54Speaker 4: Oh do you open it up to the dedication?
- 2:57Speaker 3: Oh no, oh yeah, let's let's let's just start it
- 2:59Speaker 3: with I brought the book. Then we've got hot pink pages.
- 3:05Speaker 4: Yeah, it's actually so beautiful. I've never book.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Why don't you read the dedication? Okay, I see it.
- 3:12Speaker 3: This book is dedicated to Becca.
- 3:21Speaker 4: Oh get that.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Falling in love with you has been the most rewarding
- 3:26Speaker 3: adventure of my life. Thank you for letting me share
- 3:29Speaker 3: a small ember of it. That's beautiful. Thank you so much. Yeah,
- 3:38Speaker 3: she loves it.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Starting strong, being like having a book dedicated to you
- 3:42Speaker 1: is like, that's so nice.
- 3:43Speaker 3: What better gift to receive?
- 3:44Speaker 4: Romantic? Yeah, she just like popped it in my face
- 3:47Speaker 4: one day and I was like, what.
- 3:50Speaker 5: I wanted to surprise her, but there was enough surprises
- 3:53Speaker 5: and she was going through a lot with surprise, so
- 3:57Speaker 5: I just was like, here, check this out.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Shall we talk about where do we begin the book
- 4:04Speaker 2: the concept of it, your your journey of writing.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Yeah, dear, what year did this begin?
- 4:14Speaker 5: Well, it's been years in the making. And I guess
- 4:16Speaker 5: we could start off with like, I'm a huge Pride
- 4:18Speaker 5: and Prejudice fan and I love period pieces, which is lol,
- 4:22Speaker 5: because Becca is not like a crazy period piece fans
- 4:26Speaker 5: my favorite.
- 4:27Speaker 3: So like, when she's out of town, I'll like binch Watch,
- 4:29Speaker 3: like you know, all the period pieces like Bridgerton. Yeah, yeah,
- 4:32Speaker 3: I love Bridgerton.
- 4:33Speaker 5: Yeah, I love I love anything with a really uncomfortable wardrobe,
- 4:36Speaker 5: you know what I mean. But so my dream was
- 4:41Speaker 5: to tell our story like our.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Use our meet cute as like the inspiration.
- 4:46Speaker 5: And as I was putting it together, it was interesting
- 4:49Speaker 5: because I was like, oh my gosh, Like my goal
- 4:52Speaker 5: in life is to create hopeful queer content, and there's
- 4:56Speaker 5: no way for this to end hopeful if it's in
- 5:00Speaker 5: like the actual like reality of the Victorian era. And
- 5:04Speaker 5: so as I was, you know, developing the story, I realized, Oh,
- 5:10Speaker 5: what if I do this like hyperreality kind of hyperrealism
- 5:13Speaker 5: thing where you can be queer, like you can be gay,
- 5:17Speaker 5: you can get married to a man or a woman,
- 5:19Speaker 5: but women are still not equal, and so two gay
- 5:22Speaker 5: men can inherit land and continue the family line, but
- 5:25Speaker 5: two gay women cannot, and so there's still pressure to
- 5:28Speaker 5: have you know, a son or an air to you
- 5:32Speaker 5: know leave.
- 5:32Speaker 3: So it is set in eighteen hundreds, but like a
- 5:35Speaker 3: in like a hyperreality.
- 5:36Speaker 5: Yeah, Like the short burst of the summary is I
- 5:41Speaker 5: think Pride and Prejudice meets Little Women set in a
- 5:44Speaker 5: queer hyperreality where men are where queer people can exist,
- 5:48Speaker 5: but women aren't equal.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Hyper reality is like not reality.
- 5:52Speaker 5: It's like it's excuse, It's like we're there's still carriages
- 5:55Speaker 5: and like the whole thing. But it's like, what if
- 5:58Speaker 5: I just kept asking myself if I was myself who
- 6:01Speaker 5: I am today and I lived in the Victorian era,
- 6:04Speaker 5: how would I exist and how would I thrive? And
- 6:06Speaker 5: how would I move about falling in love and like
- 6:10Speaker 5: having relationships and what would that look like if you
- 6:12Speaker 5: could just be openly a lesbian during that time.
- 6:16Speaker 3: So the two characters in this book is it Freya
- 6:20Speaker 3: is that you? Or is that Becca? That's inspired by Becca?
- 6:23Speaker 4: Okay?
- 6:24Speaker 3: And then Ivy is you?
- 6:25Speaker 1: Yes?
- 6:26Speaker 4: Okay?
- 6:26Speaker 1: So Ivy and Freya Ivan. If you're familiar with your
- 6:30Speaker 1: love story Haley and Becca. Right, well, we see it
- 6:33Speaker 1: mirrored in these characters there.
- 6:35Speaker 5: I was thinking about that there, yes, yes, yes, and no,
- 6:39Speaker 5: like I obviously hype of reality. Well, still, our love
- 6:45Speaker 5: story wasn't in the Victorian era, so things have to change.
- 6:48Speaker 5: But basically the story that I think most scrubbers have
- 6:50Speaker 5: heard is like when we met at Chateau Marmont.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Right, right, like trying to set Haley up with your vacancy.
- 6:56Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, the.
- 6:57Speaker 5: First time we met, and and and we got drinks
- 7:01Speaker 5: at chateau and my friend kept sending women over to
- 7:05Speaker 5: the table.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Did you hear about this we were getting do you
- 7:08Speaker 3: know us?
- 7:09Speaker 4: That's a really good part of the story that I
- 7:11Speaker 4: don't know if we've we've probably told it.
- 7:13Speaker 3: We can tell the story.
- 7:14Speaker 5: But basically that specific moment in our life, I basically
- 7:21Speaker 5: made a Victorian era version of that. And that's kind
- 7:24Speaker 5: of like the catapults of their relationships. So let's go
- 7:28Speaker 5: to the reality real So reality real quick is.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Reallysed for reality part. The reality part of.
- 7:37Speaker 5: It is is that obviously, back when I met at
- 7:40Speaker 5: No Vacancy and she was trying to set me up
- 7:43Speaker 5: with her younger sister.
- 7:44Speaker 3: Yes, and then the three of you were supposed to
- 7:46Speaker 3: get drinks together.
- 7:49Speaker 5: Like a group of people, and so we were going
- 7:52Speaker 5: to get drinks and she tells the story beout her
- 7:55Speaker 5: but we basically I was.
- 7:57Speaker 3: Panicked and I was like, oh my gosh, she's like
- 7:59Speaker 3: this famous person.
- 8:00Speaker 5: I have to like find this like bougie place to
- 8:02Speaker 5: take her because I don't really like go out to
- 8:04Speaker 5: get drinks. And so I called my friend. She ended
- 8:06Speaker 5: up being at the Chateau Marmm. She's like, i'll, you know,
- 8:09Speaker 5: give you a table. And so we met at chateau
- 8:11Speaker 5: and we spoke. We I mean, we hung out for
- 8:14Speaker 5: like four to six hours. We shut the place down.
- 8:17Speaker 5: But as we were getting our drinks and getting to
- 8:20Speaker 5: know each other, a woman comes up to the table
- 8:23Speaker 5: and she goes, why haven't you called me back? And
- 8:26Speaker 5: I look at her like deer in a headlight, like
- 8:28Speaker 5: what are you talking about. She's like, you've never called
- 8:31Speaker 5: me back, Like I'm really upset with you. And Becca's
- 8:33Speaker 5: staring at me and I'm like, oh my god. And
- 8:36Speaker 5: she walks away and I look at back and I'm like,
- 8:38Speaker 5: I literally don't know this person, Like I do not
- 8:40Speaker 5: know this person. An hour later or whatever it was.
- 8:44Speaker 5: Another girl comes up and I was like, why do
- 8:46Speaker 5: you call me back? And so my friend who had
- 8:48Speaker 5: set me up for the take the drinks, she was.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Doing it with me.
- 8:53Speaker 3: No, she's trying you look good. Maybe maybe it was
- 8:55Speaker 3: bad firing with Becca because she was like, oh my gosh,
- 8:59Speaker 3: she's a place.
- 9:01Speaker 4: And so setting her up with my sister, I'll show her.
- 9:06Speaker 4: So it was.
- 9:07Speaker 5: It was a wild moment where these like women kept
- 9:10Speaker 5: coming up to the table. But anyway, so that moment
- 9:13Speaker 5: in our life was I kind of like brought into this.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Book, how Ivy and Freya?
- 9:21Speaker 5: Yes, yes, And I guess getting into the book more
- 9:25Speaker 5: just to set up the scene. So Ivy again hyperreality
- 9:30Speaker 5: in the sense of like America's more progressive than Europe
- 9:34Speaker 5: at this time and England, and so Ivy and her
- 9:37Speaker 5: brother Prescott from America, they moved to England to find
- 9:42Speaker 5: him a wife because the only way to guarantee his
- 9:45Speaker 5: inheritance is to marry a woman in England, because our
- 9:49Speaker 5: father was from England. And so we meet the Talent
- 9:52Speaker 5: sisters and there's a bunch of sisters and a couple
- 9:55Speaker 5: of them are queer, and there's this character named Freya
- 9:59Speaker 5: and is one of the few sisters left to marry,
- 10:05Speaker 5: and so she has a lot of pressure to marry
- 10:08Speaker 5: a man because they need to continue the family line.
- 10:12Speaker 3: And so that's kind of the setup.
- 10:13Speaker 5: And so we go to England to kind of set
- 10:16Speaker 5: him up with one of the town sisters and then
- 10:19Speaker 5: my character ends up falling.
- 10:20Speaker 3: In love with her. How does it end.
- 10:23Speaker 4: You'll have to prove the buyer.
- 10:27Speaker 2: It doesn't end, but maybe that season two or book two, yeah,
- 10:32Speaker 2: book the sequel.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Yeah. So yeah, So that's kind of the setup of
- 10:36Speaker 3: of the story.
- 10:37Speaker 5: So it's like loosely based off of our meet cute
- 10:40Speaker 5: and then obviously it's been really you know, Beca's been
- 10:42Speaker 5: able to tell our story a lot, and so this
- 10:45Speaker 5: was kind of my way of telling my experience through
- 10:49Speaker 5: the character's eyes of Ivy and navigating you know, meeting
- 10:55Speaker 5: you know, these sisters and Freya and like having my
- 10:58Speaker 5: world turn up side down. And she's like this sapphog
- 11:01Speaker 5: poet in the Victorian era, and so she's like this
- 11:05Speaker 5: known lesbian poet, and so the younger sister like knows
- 11:09Speaker 5: of her. Like, so I was trying to find like
- 11:10Speaker 5: little things to like have little throwbacks. But but Yeah,
- 11:15Speaker 5: it's really fun.
- 11:17Speaker 3: It's really fun, and it's three hundred pages.
- 11:21Speaker 5: I think the fonts it's hya so the font you know,
- 11:23Speaker 5: it's a quick read why young adults, oh.
- 11:29Speaker 3: Words, So I appreciate, but yeah, it does have to
- 11:33Speaker 3: spoiler alert.
- 11:34Speaker 5: It does have a hopeful ending. And for me growing up,
- 11:38Speaker 5: all of our queer representation ended in like suicide or
- 11:43Speaker 5: death or like in love and like really having to
- 11:47Speaker 5: hide our relationship celebrated exactly. And so I was really
- 11:51Speaker 5: inspired by the concept of, like, Okay, what if you
- 11:54Speaker 5: could be gay, but you're still not equal as women,
- 11:57Speaker 5: and you're still struggling to to thrive in an economy
- 12:02Speaker 5: in a world, and so what does that look like
- 12:05Speaker 5: and how do you find your joy and happiness? When
- 12:09Speaker 5: maybe I also liked the idea of like, you know,
- 12:12Speaker 5: I think everyone can, whether you're queer or not, anyone
- 12:15Speaker 5: can relate to this love story because I think every
- 12:18Speaker 5: single person is born with parents who have expectations of
- 12:22Speaker 5: who they're going to end up with, right, whether it's
- 12:24Speaker 5: your religion, whether it's your culture, whether it's your background,
- 12:27Speaker 5: and it always it's always gonna be challenging to navigate
- 12:32Speaker 5: regardless of those expectations and the disappointments, and so I
- 12:36Speaker 5: also really loved having just something so relatable in that
- 12:40Speaker 5: sense where you can pick this up and read it
- 12:42Speaker 5: and see yourself in it, and sometimes you know, the
- 12:44Speaker 5: happy ending isn't like everything works out. The happy ending
- 12:48Speaker 5: is like, we're going to figure this out together and
- 12:51Speaker 5: we're going to like persevere through the hardships.
- 12:55Speaker 1: I do think it's super relatable, you know, stepping outside
- 12:58Speaker 1: of the queer community, like I was saying, I also
- 13:01Speaker 1: experienced some of that, Like I never thought in a
- 13:02Speaker 1: million years I would end up.
- 13:04Speaker 3: With a divorced Jewish dad, you know what I mean.
- 13:08Speaker 3: And so it's just I think it is going to
- 13:11Speaker 3: be really relatable to a lot of people.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the whole concept is like, outside of
- 13:16Speaker 2: being queer, there's so many other things that people navigate
- 13:20Speaker 2: to be together and that they have to go through
- 13:23Speaker 2: with family or expectations or whatever that leads to that
- 13:26Speaker 2: decision of are we doing this together or are we
- 13:29Speaker 2: gonna wonder what if for the rest of our lives?
- 13:32Speaker 2: Like take obviously this is focused on queer a queer
- 13:35Speaker 2: love story, but I do think a lot of people
- 13:38Speaker 2: can resonate with like differences of religion and beliefs everything.
- 13:43Speaker 4: You're going on a book tour, I am, I'm not going.
- 13:46Speaker 3: To Ye, it's a big deal. Not everybody gets a
- 13:55Speaker 3: book tour.
- 13:55Speaker 5: This is my first book tour because my last the
- 13:59Speaker 5: last book that came out, Girls Like Girls, I was
- 14:01Speaker 5: already on tour, like for my music tour, and so
- 14:04Speaker 5: I was doing these like meet and greets every night,
- 14:06Speaker 5: and so I didn't really get to do an official
- 14:08Speaker 5: book tour. So this is like my first one, which
- 14:10Speaker 5: I'm really excited. We're going to New York, Chicago, Berkeley,
- 14:15Speaker 5: and then we ended in LA.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Yeah, we should go to the LA one. You should
- 14:19Speaker 3: definitely if you know, if you're in town, you should
- 14:21Speaker 3: come to the LA. What days the one is it?
- 14:23Speaker 3: The Barnes and Noble the Grove.
- 14:24Speaker 2: November seventh is lah, November six is Berkeley, Wednesday November
- 14:30Speaker 2: fifth is Chicago, and Tuesday November fourth is New York City.
- 14:33Speaker 3: Nice.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Ye, So if all of our scrubbers, we know that
- 14:38Speaker 2: y'all be showing up for things, So if y'all are
- 14:41Speaker 2: in the area any.
- 14:42Speaker 4: Of these dates, yeah, I'll be.
- 14:45Speaker 5: I think I think the scrubbers have like a one
- 14:48Speaker 5: up reading this book because they know they know much
- 14:50Speaker 5: about relationship, and so I think like it's going to
- 14:54Speaker 5: have like this Easter egg energy for them. I'm really
- 14:57Speaker 5: excited to hear their thoughts on it, because I'm really
- 15:01Speaker 5: really proud of this book and this has been something
- 15:03Speaker 5: I've been wanting to do for a really long time.
- 15:05Speaker 3: And yeah, you should be so proud.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 15:10Speaker 5: Staring at it, it's like gorgeous, Like it has like
- 15:14Speaker 5: hints of Wicked colors, but like we love Wicked, so
- 15:16Speaker 5: there you go.
- 15:17Speaker 3: I didn't make that until now. There are different shades.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Number two, I mean, movie number two is coming out.
- 15:24Speaker 2: There's a lot of pink and green.
- 15:25Speaker 3: There's a lot of pink and green energy right now.
- 15:44Speaker 2: When you write stories, are you already conceptualizing TV or
- 15:51Speaker 2: movie when you're when you're working on the I know
- 15:53Speaker 2: the answer.
- 15:55Speaker 3: Yes, we didn't rehearse this by the no no, no, no,
- 15:59Speaker 3: This is all I know.
- 16:00Speaker 5: She's gonna ask no, Like I you know, Girls Like
- 16:03Speaker 5: Girls obviously was like a ten year journey into getting
- 16:06Speaker 5: the film green lit, And a lot of the reason
- 16:10Speaker 5: why I got green lit was because I, you know,
- 16:13Speaker 5: made girls and Girls into a ya and then became
- 16:15Speaker 5: a New York Times.
- 16:16Speaker 3: Best seller, and so that helped push So a lot
- 16:18Speaker 3: of these.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Like films and television shows you're seeing a lot of
- 16:21Speaker 1: them are inspired by books, and that seems to be
- 16:24Speaker 1: the best path forward for Hollywood and quotations for IP.
- 16:28Speaker 1: And so when I was developing this story and writing
- 16:32Speaker 1: this story, I one hundred percent was thinking, like.
- 16:35Speaker 3: I would love for this to be a TV show,
- 16:37Speaker 3: or like it'd have to be a.
- 16:38Speaker 5: Really long movie if it was a movie, like I
- 16:40Speaker 5: need like two and a half hours kind of vibe
- 16:43Speaker 5: because they're just so much like Juicy, you know, stories
- 16:47Speaker 5: and plots. But I would love to make it into
- 16:51Speaker 5: a TV show and then maybe like the next season,
- 16:53Speaker 5: you follow another character. Oh there's another really cool place
- 16:56Speaker 5: in the book called the Bridge, which is like the
- 16:59Speaker 5: West Hollywood of.
- 17:02Speaker 3: You know, the Victoria era exactly.
- 17:05Speaker 5: And so once a month, like they all meet at
- 17:07Speaker 5: the Bridge and like everyone just gets to celebrate and
- 17:10Speaker 5: like there's like boats, and it's really like a magical
- 17:14Speaker 5: like the parade.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Yeah, like just like kind of like a Pride.
- 17:18Speaker 5: Night, but like once a month and everyone comes together,
- 17:21Speaker 5: and so you know, maybe in future seasons I could
- 17:23Speaker 5: follow another character, But I just love world building, and
- 17:28Speaker 5: I was really excited to challenge myself more because like
- 17:31Speaker 5: Girls Like Girls was from like my youth, like high school,
- 17:34Speaker 5: and so it was really fun to get to be
- 17:36Speaker 5: inspired by the love that I have today and beyond,
- 17:41Speaker 5: and so that was like really cool to kind of
- 17:44Speaker 5: challenge myself a bit more, to see, like what would
- 17:47Speaker 5: it be like if Ray and Ivy like existed in
- 17:49Speaker 5: the Victorian era, and like what would happen?
- 17:52Speaker 3: What happened to us?
- 17:53Speaker 2: You mentioned your directorial debut, Girls Like Girls, coming out.
- 18:00Speaker 1: I haven't gotten an official date, but I'm hoping next year,
- 18:04Speaker 1: twenty six yes, and any day in that year, yes, hopefully.
- 18:08Speaker 3: Yeah, sooner than later.
- 18:10Speaker 2: When you wrote Girls Like Girls in twenty fifteen, or
- 18:14Speaker 2: you wrote it in twenty fourteen.
- 18:16Speaker 5: Relased the music video on twenty fifteen, and then I said,
- 18:19Speaker 5: didn't start writing till later, So.
- 18:20Speaker 2: No, I know, but I'm talking about the music video.
- 18:22Speaker 2: What the conceptual? Yeah, the Girls Like Girls conception. Yeah,
- 18:26Speaker 2: you were not in the video.
- 18:29Speaker 4: I was not on purpose. Yes, why.
- 18:32Speaker 3: I wasn't in.
- 18:35Speaker 5: The Girls Like Girls music video because I it was
- 18:38Speaker 5: like my coming out and so it was like my
- 18:42Speaker 5: half ass of coming out without putting my face on
- 18:45Speaker 5: it because I was nervous and.
- 18:47Speaker 1: So really yes, and so I was too scared. It's
- 18:52Speaker 1: so hard for me to picture that now, I know
- 18:55Speaker 1: I was like too scared.
- 18:56Speaker 5: But then like I had the amazing Stephanie Scott and
- 19:00Speaker 5: Kelsey Asville and they were the stars of the music video.
- 19:05Speaker 5: And so it was really cool to be able to
- 19:07Speaker 5: direct to the film for Girls Like Girls because I
- 19:10Speaker 5: was able to reclaim my space in that. And I
- 19:14Speaker 5: think that goes that's connected to not feeling represented in
- 19:19Speaker 5: the Victorian era, right, like growing up being like, oh
- 19:21Speaker 5: my gosh, I'll never book a role like in the
- 19:23Speaker 5: eighteen hundreds or like because of just what I look like.
- 19:26Speaker 5: And so I think going through this Girl's Like Girls
- 19:29Speaker 5: experience was a really beautiful, like full circle moment where again,
- 19:34Speaker 5: like you said, it's crazy, I was so scared to
- 19:36Speaker 5: put myself in the music video and like have my
- 19:38Speaker 5: face in it, and like that was terrifying for me.
- 19:42Speaker 3: How long was that process for you?
- 19:44Speaker 2: Like?
- 19:44Speaker 3: Were you okay? So you you knew that about yourself?
- 19:47Speaker 1: You said, I knew I was scared since I was
- 19:49Speaker 1: like five or six, but this was your half you
- 19:51Speaker 1: said half ass. I would say I was attached to
- 19:55Speaker 1: the song in the sense of, like, maybe if I
- 19:58Speaker 1: were to do it over again, I would have myself
- 20:00Speaker 1: in the video. So you were you said five six
- 20:03Speaker 1: when you knew yeah, yeah, yeah? And then when how
- 20:06Speaker 1: old were you when you like really put your face
- 20:08Speaker 1: and name and everything out?
- 20:10Speaker 5: Well, I mean that was twenty fifteen. Girls like girls,
- 20:12Speaker 5: I like, I was how old in the music video?
- 20:14Speaker 1: But it was like my song that I wrote because
- 20:16Speaker 1: I feel like I remember when you and Becca first
- 20:18Speaker 1: started dating. I was so I admired so much how
- 20:23Speaker 1: patient you were with Becca throughout that whole process, because
- 20:26Speaker 1: I was like, oh my gosh, Like if I were Haley,
- 20:30Speaker 1: I it would be so hard for me, like with
- 20:32Speaker 1: how you guys were doing things in the beginning. But
- 20:34Speaker 1: I was like, I think you obviously can relate to
- 20:36Speaker 1: what Becca was going through because you had your own
- 20:38Speaker 1: journey through it.
- 20:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:39Speaker 5: I mean we've had totally different upbringings, but I can
- 20:42Speaker 5: relate in the sense of, like, you're ready when you're ready, right,
- 20:46Speaker 5: you know, And it's really scary to like just know
- 20:49Speaker 5: who you are and then also be like what are
- 20:51Speaker 5: people going to say? And it's so crazy to look
- 20:54Speaker 5: at my career that like that Girls Like Girls in
- 20:57Speaker 5: twenty fifteen, me speaking my truth would finally be have
- 21:02Speaker 5: a whole career because I was like, this is who
- 21:04Speaker 5: I am, and then all of a sudden, I'm finding
- 21:06Speaker 5: all these people going, oh my gosh, I feel the
- 21:08Speaker 5: same way.
- 21:09Speaker 3: And that's why Girls Like Girls was so powerful.
- 21:11Speaker 5: It is because we don't get to see women be
- 21:14Speaker 5: together and like win and like thrive in culture and
- 21:18Speaker 5: in spaces, and so as soon as I started doing that,
- 21:21Speaker 5: I was like, oh my gosh, My whole purpose in
- 21:23Speaker 5: life is to create hopeful career content to kind of
- 21:27Speaker 5: fill you know, when I when I'm like building my
- 21:30Speaker 5: decks for like music videos, or even when I was
- 21:32Speaker 5: doing the film, when there's this thing called shot Deck
- 21:36Speaker 5: and you go on and you like, you know, it's
- 21:39Speaker 5: like it's kind of like a pinterest for like cinema, okay,
- 21:42Speaker 5: like a mood board, and you have such limited amounts
- 21:46Speaker 5: of films to choose from to be able to put
- 21:48Speaker 5: together a vision for like women loving women's stories. Oh interesting,
- 21:54Speaker 5: and so like my goal in life is to be
- 21:56Speaker 5: able to fill up that void. So when you go
- 21:59Speaker 5: on shot Deck, you're like, oh my gosh, do I
- 22:01Speaker 5: take this image? Or do I take this image right now?
- 22:04Speaker 5: You're just like, so, I mean, you have like so
- 22:07Speaker 5: few images to work with because there's so many, there's
- 22:11Speaker 5: very little. I mean, it took me ten years to
- 22:13Speaker 5: get Girls like Girls made. It's just two girls falling
- 22:15Speaker 5: in love and ends in hope, and that took ten years. Yeah,
- 22:18Speaker 5: and it's never been made before.
- 22:20Speaker 3: That's wild. Yeah, and it's twenty twenty five.
- 22:23Speaker 5: And so that was my goal with Where There's Room
- 22:25Speaker 5: for Us is like I wanted to be inspired by
- 22:28Speaker 5: our love story and then bring it into a even
- 22:31Speaker 5: bigger world and find a way to maybe hopefully get
- 22:34Speaker 5: this made to be brought on to our screen so
- 22:36Speaker 5: people can be like, oh my gosh, I look like her,
- 22:39Speaker 5: Like I can succeed in life, you know, just representation
- 22:43Speaker 5: as a whole.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Where did a title come from?
- 22:47Speaker 2: So?
- 22:48Speaker 3: Where there's room for us? The great question?
- 22:52Speaker 5: I think for me, it's always like creating space and
- 22:56Speaker 5: like wanting to have space.
- 22:57Speaker 3: And so I liked the idea of a title of
- 22:59Speaker 3: having some thing of like where there's room for us,
- 23:01Speaker 3: of like, like, even when.
- 23:03Speaker 5: There's space, how do we fill up that space, and
- 23:06Speaker 5: how do we thrive in that space and how do
- 23:08Speaker 5: we take ownership in that space.
- 23:10Speaker 1: It's really interesting when you said, like, I don't know
- 23:13Speaker 1: what you call it in the movie world, but you
- 23:15Speaker 1: the Pinterest thing and not having a shot deck, not
- 23:17Speaker 1: having the amount of images to choose from and stuff
- 23:20Speaker 1: like that's so that's just so crazy. I feel like
- 23:23Speaker 1: when I was I didn't really use Pinterest, but anytime
- 23:24Speaker 1: I would type in anything that I needed, it was like.
- 23:26Speaker 3: It was there, right there, right there. Yeah.
- 23:28Speaker 5: And so imagine like as creators and filmmakers and authors,
- 23:32Speaker 5: and it's like you're trying to create something that hasn't
- 23:35Speaker 5: existed yet, and then you're trying to it makes it
- 23:38Speaker 5: super challenging because you're trying to prove to companies and
- 23:42Speaker 5: studios and people with lots of money that your idea
- 23:46Speaker 5: is a good idea and it's never been done yeah,
- 23:49Speaker 5: or there's no proof of concepts. And like that's why
- 23:52Speaker 5: writing books has been like such a freeing moment for
- 23:56Speaker 5: me because I can just like do what I want
- 23:59Speaker 5: and take it wherever I want without anyone else yeah,
- 24:02Speaker 5: telling me, oh, we can't afford this scene, or we
- 24:04Speaker 5: can't afford this or we can't do it here. It's
- 24:07Speaker 5: like no, like I can have the place called the
- 24:10Speaker 5: Bridge with lanterns and boats and you know, like meadows
- 24:14Speaker 5: and lavender fields, like I can do it all. And
- 24:17Speaker 5: this has been the most freeing medium in my life.
- 24:20Speaker 4: I think, do you have a dream cast for where
- 24:24Speaker 4: that could do?
- 24:26Speaker 2: No?
- 24:29Speaker 3: What that would be the day. I don't have a
- 24:34Speaker 3: dream past because like it could take like I don't know.
- 24:37Speaker 2: I'm just saying if it were to get mad, if
- 24:40Speaker 2: it were to get made in the speedy sense next.
- 24:44Speaker 3: Year, I haven't thought about that. Actually, really, that's like
- 24:48Speaker 3: the first thing I thought about.
- 24:49Speaker 5: Well, I guess I don't. I'm very like, once I
- 24:52Speaker 5: have an idea, I have to do it and it
- 24:54Speaker 5: has to happen. And so I try to not lock
- 24:57Speaker 5: myself into an exact vision because once I do it,
- 25:01Speaker 5: like if I were to be like it needs to
- 25:03Speaker 5: be whatever Margo, Robbie or whatever, if it didn't happen,
- 25:08Speaker 5: it could never happen.
- 25:10Speaker 4: Yeah, well she has.
- 25:16Speaker 3: She had.
- 25:19Speaker 4: There good answer, just like we rehearsed.
- 25:23Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 25:25Speaker 4: I feel like.
- 25:26Speaker 2: When we see like we obviously see you on the
- 25:29Speaker 2: podcast and people get to know you, but I do
- 25:31Speaker 2: feel like your social media you have really allowed people
- 25:34Speaker 2: to come in and see more of your personality.
- 25:37Speaker 3: Thank you. I'm trying.
- 25:38Speaker 2: Has that been challenging because I feel I have this
- 25:41Speaker 2: theory that people who are in the industry as like
- 25:43Speaker 2: actors or uh, celebrities, that there's this sense of need
- 25:48Speaker 2: to be perfect in terms of how they're presented. Did
- 25:51Speaker 2: you experience like I know that we've talked about you
- 25:53Speaker 2: experiencing that need of like everything needs to like be perfect.
- 25:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:58Speaker 5: I think, like, well, during the pandemic, I just like
- 26:02Speaker 5: I stopped posting a lot, and so it's taken like
- 26:05Speaker 5: years to kind of like get back because I used to,
- 26:07Speaker 5: like I mean when I was like fifteen, I was
- 26:09Speaker 5: like YouTube vlogging being likely and I'm getting on the
- 26:13Speaker 5: plane and here I am, And I don't know if
- 26:16Speaker 5: it's like getting older too. I also think like we
- 26:19Speaker 5: had such a private life for so long, so that
- 26:23Speaker 5: just like became like my normal and like my comfort.
- 26:26Speaker 5: But I am trying to like share more of like
- 26:29Speaker 5: my goofy side and me not being able to say
- 26:33Speaker 5: eyes yes if you've seen our TikTok. But I think
- 26:38Speaker 5: that's what was really fun about writing this book is
- 26:40Speaker 5: like kind of navigating, you know, it just have like
- 26:45Speaker 5: hints of my my perspective and my experience through this
- 26:49Speaker 5: book and like navigating entering a new space and meeting
- 26:54Speaker 5: someone that's like so different from me, and and finding
- 26:59Speaker 5: a way to just like make sure that we end
- 27:01Speaker 5: up together.
- 27:02Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't think.
- 27:03Speaker 2: I mean, we don't talk about it a lot, but
- 27:05Speaker 2: we had to navigate a lot of things in our relationship.
- 27:09Speaker 2: And we've been together, you know, seven and a half years,
- 27:13Speaker 2: and there's been so crazy, a lot of hardships and
- 27:17Speaker 2: navigating like really hard conversations not only with each other
- 27:20Speaker 2: but with other people, and Haley, I have to say, like,
- 27:23Speaker 2: through it all, I don't know anything different, but I
- 27:25Speaker 2: realized how fortunate I was to have a partner who
- 27:28Speaker 2: was so patient. And also there were a few things
- 27:31Speaker 2: where I may have been like I'm out, amout yeah yeah,
- 27:37Speaker 2: yeah yeah, And it really is a testament to how
- 27:40Speaker 2: much how much you love me and our relationship and
- 27:44Speaker 2: wanted to be with me, and how much I wanted
- 27:47Speaker 2: to be with you. But I'm glad, like there's you
- 27:49Speaker 2: know that you have a way of expressing that because
- 27:51Speaker 2: there was a lot of time in our life that
- 27:54Speaker 2: was private before we came out publicly that it was hard.
- 28:00Speaker 5: I mean I think when you're well, right back at you, babe,
- 28:02Speaker 5: because you could have also been like, see, yah, this
- 28:06Speaker 5: is too hard. But I think it goes back to like,
- 28:09Speaker 5: you know, you meet someone and like they might have
- 28:13Speaker 5: a totally different upbringing or they might have a totally
- 28:15Speaker 5: different religion or culture, and it's like you're navigating, Okay.
- 28:20Speaker 3: What are my boundaries?
- 28:21Speaker 5: Like what do I need in a partner, and like
- 28:23Speaker 5: can this person be come from a totally different world
- 28:26Speaker 5: than my world?
- 28:27Speaker 3: And like how do we meet?
- 28:29Speaker 5: And also it's kind of like in Us against the
- 28:31Speaker 5: World's kind of thing too, where it's like how do
- 28:33Speaker 5: you navigate your love and also navigate all the other
- 28:36Speaker 5: relationships that have expectations, whether it's family or friends, Like
- 28:41Speaker 5: people always have something to say, and so it's just
- 28:43Speaker 5: like navigating a new relationship, navigating all of all of
- 28:48Speaker 5: these people's like feelings and thoughts on your relationship, and
- 28:52Speaker 5: then like reclaiming your relationship and being like this is
- 28:55Speaker 5: our relationship and like if you're good, then I'm good,
- 28:58Speaker 5: and then the rest we'll figure out.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I think there's something so beautiful about being with
- 29:04Speaker 1: someone like a partner that is from totally a different background,
- 29:08Speaker 1: because like I mean, I just I can't imagine being
- 29:14Speaker 1: with someone that's exactly or is exactly like me.
- 29:17Speaker 3: Well, it challenges you, It challenges you too, but.
- 29:19Speaker 1: It's such a beautiful thing to like learn and accept
- 29:23Speaker 1: and grow and like experience new things. And I don't know,
- 29:27Speaker 1: I just think it's like it's a beautiful way to
- 29:30Speaker 1: experience life.
- 29:31Speaker 5: Yeah, And I but I think it takes courage, Like
- 29:34Speaker 5: and I think we live in a society that encourages familiarity,
- 29:38Speaker 5: encourages sameness, right, and just being like, you know, that's
- 29:44Speaker 5: what's easy, right, And so it takes a lot of
- 29:46Speaker 5: courage to be like, oh I haven't thought of it
- 29:49Speaker 5: that way, or oh, like there's another way to live,
- 29:51Speaker 5: or oh there's another way to be centered, or there's
- 29:53Speaker 5: another way to think about this, and so you know,
- 29:57Speaker 5: but that takes strength and not being a narcissist. So
- 30:04Speaker 5: self awareness is really key, it is, it is.
- 30:07Speaker 1: Yeah, But so with narcissism, there's like a lot of
- 30:09Speaker 1: narcissists out there, and I think it's like.
- 30:11Speaker 5: Eighty twenty we're in a world of about eighty percent narcist.
- 30:15Speaker 3: Yes, and you guys are not in it, so congratulations.
- 30:19Speaker 2: Yeah, we work hard at that, not being narcissists. But yeah,
- 30:22Speaker 2: I feel like I'm just so proud of you. I'm
- 30:25Speaker 2: proud of us, I'm proud of our love and I'm
- 30:27Speaker 2: so I mean, reading your intro of all the things
- 30:30Speaker 2: you do is like it's it's so interesting because I'm
- 30:34Speaker 2: so familiar with it and I'm in it with you
- 30:37Speaker 2: and like the creativity and the process of it.
- 30:40Speaker 4: But when I when I'm reading it from this perspective,
- 30:43Speaker 4: I'm like, whoa, she does a lot. It's so impressive.
- 30:47Speaker 3: It really is so impressive. Like I'm.
- 30:51Speaker 1: Everything else aside just writing a three hundred page novel
- 30:55Speaker 1: is so hard, and I'm so proud of you, and
- 31:00Speaker 1: it looks beautiful and I do I want to manifest
- 31:03Speaker 1: and I hope that you that this can become like.
- 31:07Speaker 4: Your time New York. Yeah, there, Cellar.
- 31:13Speaker 3: But also I could see it becoming like a Netflix binge.
- 31:17Speaker 3: Yeah we a binge, we get another binge? Yeah, like
- 31:20Speaker 3: a girly pop binge.
- 31:25Speaker 1: Tanya will be directing it, Yeah, I could be in
- 31:28Speaker 1: charge of the soundtrack exactly.
- 31:31Speaker 2: Why so Tanya wrote a song and she wanted to
- 31:36Speaker 2: present it to you, but we're going to take a
- 31:38Speaker 2: break and we'll be right back, all right. So in
- 32:00Speaker 2: Monday's episode, Tanya was sharing a song that she has
- 32:05Speaker 2: written herself, and she performed a little snippet of it
- 32:08Speaker 2: on that podcast and then I thought, wow, you should
- 32:12Speaker 2: you should sing it, Na Haley, just to get any feedback.
- 32:18Speaker 2: And the floor is yours stle.
- 32:21Speaker 3: Where those room for us. It feels like there's a
- 32:25Speaker 3: sacrifice involved. Both parties have to sacrifice, sacrifice for love.
- 32:34Speaker 3: It's a thankless job.
- 32:36Speaker 1: You run off and do what you want, sacrifice for love.
- 32:45Speaker 3: But should the other one sacrifice too? Should it fades out?
- 32:58Speaker 5: That wasn't really beautifl and I loved that you were
- 33:01Speaker 5: staring into my eyes the entire time, no blinking necessary.
- 33:06Speaker 3: I feel like I'm on Like that felt intimate. Yeah,
- 33:09Speaker 3: thank you, Tanya. That was beautiful. You're welcome.
- 33:13Speaker 4: Well yeah, I mean would you turn your chair around? Yeah?
- 33:16Speaker 3: Absolutely? Yeah, absolutely, I'd be like, what is that song? Yeah? Wow,
- 33:29Speaker 3: we'll talk, Yeah, we'll talk people maybe yeah, viol violin
- 33:34Speaker 3: A violent version of that would be really lovely Victorian era, Yeah,
- 33:38Speaker 3: that would be absolutely stunning.
- 33:45Speaker 4: So we did get engaged almost four months ago.
- 33:49Speaker 3: Wow, that's wild. I know, time flies. Time flies when
- 33:53Speaker 3: you're having fun.
- 33:54Speaker 2: And the people are, you know, curious, Well they got
- 33:58Speaker 2: some curious. They're so curious about it's serious. What the
- 34:02Speaker 2: next plans are? Okay, the next steps?
- 34:05Speaker 4: I don't know if there's anything you'd want to share.
- 34:07Speaker 3: Oh, is there something you want to share?
- 34:10Speaker 4: I don't have anything to share.
- 34:11Speaker 3: I hope to be proposed to. You are going to
- 34:16Speaker 3: I'm relaxed now.
- 34:19Speaker 4: Oh, you're just relaxing too.
- 34:21Speaker 2: No.
- 34:21Speaker 5: I mean, like, you know, once you put a ring
- 34:23Speaker 5: on it, then we'll get the ball, get the ball
- 34:26Speaker 5: rolling on plans and stuff. But I've heard from many
- 34:30Speaker 5: people to have a long engagement because they said it's
- 34:33Speaker 5: like such an amazing like chapter and so you know,
- 34:37Speaker 5: I'm enjoying that. No, I'm really enjoying my fiance, I say.
- 34:42Speaker 5: And if you get to the end of the book,
- 34:45Speaker 5: you know, spoiler alert, spoiler alert, whoa, there's some bells ringing?
- 34:51Speaker 3: Maybe maybe not, I don't know. You got to read
- 34:55Speaker 3: the book. I'm so looking forward to your wedding. Oh yeah,
- 34:58Speaker 3: I'm excited to bok excited to read book. I'm like,
- 35:03Speaker 3: I'm excited for you to read the book, and I'm
- 35:05Speaker 3: excited for the wedding. I'm excited for it all. I'm
- 35:08Speaker 3: really excited too. I wanted to so.
- 35:12Speaker 2: Tanya has offered that if I if you need any
- 35:15Speaker 2: help planning my birthday next.
- 35:16Speaker 3: Week, she is of service, so that would be great.
- 35:20Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 35:20Speaker 2: I told her that you would reach out if you
- 35:22Speaker 2: needed anything because you saw her in action during the.
- 35:25Speaker 3: It was really harassive. Yeah, I've never seen anything like it.
- 35:29Speaker 3: You guys are crazy.
- 35:32Speaker 4: Yeah, she talked about it a lot.

- 35:39Speaker 3: I feel thoughtful, very thoughtful. Thank you. Yeah, you're welcome.
- 35:44Speaker 3: I'll text you after this. Perfect. How many interviews do
- 35:50Speaker 3: you have lined up? I have a few, but I
- 35:52Speaker 3: wanted to come here first.
- 35:55Speaker 4: You know what could be at the book tours?
- 36:01Speaker 5: Well, depending on the city, there's uh, there's met and
- 36:05Speaker 5: greets at every city, I believe, and then there's Q
- 36:08Speaker 5: and a's in a couple of the cities.
- 36:10Speaker 3: Uh. So that's what you should expect. Unfortunately, no like
- 36:14Speaker 3: concert performance, you know, no acoustic performance a recession.
- 36:17Speaker 5: Sorry, all right, I'm really excited. It's just like so
- 36:22Speaker 5: lonely online sometimes and so I'm so excited to see
- 36:25Speaker 5: people in person and just like reconnect with my community,
- 36:30Speaker 5: my people.
- 36:30Speaker 4: Haley's very much needs social interaction.
- 36:33Speaker 3: I don't.
- 36:34Speaker 2: But she like if we are just in the house
- 36:37Speaker 2: for too long, She's like, I it's time, I need
- 36:40Speaker 2: to I just have to.
- 36:41Speaker 3: Do one thing a day. Yeah, if I just do one,
- 36:43Speaker 3: what's the thing? Like go to Target? Yeah, oh okay, or.
- 36:46Speaker 1: Like go to a grocery store, but not like you
- 36:48Speaker 1: don't need to go to like an you don't need
- 36:50Speaker 1: to go to dinner or like a No, I need
- 36:52Speaker 1: to leave the house once a day. Yes, and Becca
- 36:55Speaker 1: could be in the house for three plus days with
- 36:59Speaker 1: seeing with no oxygen, no fresh air, and then nothing
- 37:02Speaker 1: stop outside.
- 37:04Speaker 3: Yeah, but you don't have to.
- 37:06Speaker 4: I don't have to, but I do.
- 37:08Speaker 3: It's crazy.
- 37:08Speaker 5: It is a really impressive thing, very like bare hibernation energy.
- 37:16Speaker 2: That's how I recover. But she gives a lot of
- 37:18Speaker 2: comfort from socializing. Yeah, like if I socialize, I need
- 37:23Speaker 2: to recover.
- 37:24Speaker 4: Yeah, if you got on.
- 37:25Speaker 3: A Friday, you best believe Saturday, Sunday, Monday, she done.
- 37:28Speaker 3: We went to a party on Friday and we did
- 37:30Speaker 3: nothing Saturdays.
- 37:31Speaker 2: But she had to get up and go do something
- 37:33Speaker 2: and that was herding. She's fulfilled that she had an outing.
- 37:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I understand that I can't sit. I can't watch
- 37:39Speaker 1: TV during the daylight. It's called something. It's called like
- 37:45Speaker 1: it's no, it's called something. It's called like she can't
- 37:48Speaker 1: watch daily. No, it's like something where you can't watch
- 37:51Speaker 1: TV during the day because it's no because you feel
- 37:54Speaker 1: bad because you should be like seizing the day.
- 37:57Speaker 5: Oh, I have that, but not a TV thing. I
- 38:00Speaker 5: just have that as like a baseline. Yeah, like I
- 38:03Speaker 5: have to go seize the day or like do something
- 38:05Speaker 5: like I cannot if I want. Even there's a show
- 38:07Speaker 5: that I love and I have the afternoon, I can
- 38:09Speaker 5: watch it at two pm. I will not watch until
- 38:11Speaker 5: like six. Really, yeah, it's sick we.
- 38:14Speaker 1: Put our TV in a spot where the glare makes
- 38:17Speaker 1: it impossible to watch to start watching it during the day.
- 38:20Speaker 3: Yeah, really I love a day watch. But again I
- 38:23Speaker 3: still have to have my outing.
- 38:25Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, I was speaking thinking about talking about
- 38:29Speaker 2: no acoustic performance because it's a recession. But are you
- 38:32Speaker 2: people I get dms all the time about you making
- 38:34Speaker 2: more music?
- 38:35Speaker 4: Are you working on music?
- 38:36Speaker 5: I am working on music. I you know, obviously just

- 39:00Speaker 3: tell us? I just can't tell you. That's fair. Yeah,
- 39:03Speaker 3: I tell you a lot of things though, for sure.
- 39:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 39:07Speaker 5: But yeah, I've been I've been in the studio. I've

- 39:20Speaker 3: Yeah, there's a song, perfly.

- 39:28Speaker 5: I mean.
- 39:28Speaker 3: Like it's got to be the right timing.
- 39:30Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I can't be released.
