- 0:00This is Voices of Life, a ministry of the Church
- 0:03for Life Today's. Did you know? Explores one
- 0:08of the most extraordinary constitutional moments
- 0:11in American history. A moment shaped by the long
- 0:15political journey of Richard Nixon, the steady
- 0:18leadership of Gerald Ford, and the resilience
- 0:21of the American Constitution. And now, here is
- 0:27your host. Pastor David. Welcome to the Voices
- 0:32of Life. I'm Pastor David. Today we look at two
- 0:35men whose lives intersect at one of the most
- 0:38dramatic turning points in our nation's history.
- 0:40One man rose through decades of political battles
- 0:43to reach the presidency, only to see it collapse
- 0:46under the weight of scandal. The other spent
- 0:50a lifetime in quiet, faithful public service,
- 0:54never seeking the presidency yet becoming the
- 0:56leader called upon to steady a shaken nation.
- 1:01Did you know that Richard Milhous Nixon's journey
- 1:04to the presidency began in a small California
- 1:06town long before Watergate ever entered the national
- 1:10vocabulary? Nixon was born in 1913 in Yorba Linda,
- 1:15California, and grew up helping in his family's
- 1:18grocery store. He worked hard, earned scholarships,
- 1:21and graduated from Witter College and Duke University
- 1:24School of Law. home to practice law but world
- 1:29war ii changed his path nixon joined the u .s
- 1:32navy serving as an operations officer in the
- 1:35pacific after the war nixon entered politics
- 1:38he won a seat in the u .s house of representatives
- 1:41in 1946 gaining national attention through his
- 1:44role in the alger hiss investigation he then
- 1:48won a seat in the u .s senate in 1950 and soon
- 1:51became vice president of the united states under
- 1:54dwight d eisenhower serving from 1953 to 1961.
- 2:00Nixon's political life was dramatic. He lost
- 2:03the 1960 presidential election to John F. Kennedy.
- 2:06He lost the 1962 California governor's race and
- 2:09famously told reporters they won't have Nixon
- 2:12to kick around anymore. But he was not finished.
- 2:16In 1968, Nixon made one of the greatest political
- 2:20comebacks in American history, winning the presidency.
- 2:24His administration opened relations with China,
- 2:26advanced detente with the Soviet Union, ended
- 2:30the military draft, created the EPA and OSHA,
- 2:34and negotiated the end of American involvement
- 2:37in Vietnam. Nixon's presidency was consequential,
- 2:41but it also was fragile. Did you know that Nixon's
- 2:46downfall began with a burglary? A burglary he
- 2:50had absolutely nothing to do with. On June 17,
- 2:551972, five men broke into the Democratic National
- 2:58Committee headquarters at the Watergate complex.
- 3:01What followed was not just a crime, but a cover
- 3:05-up that reached the highest levels of government.
- 3:09Investigations uncovered secret White House recordings.
- 3:13In a United States v. Nixon, the Supreme Court
- 3:16unanimously ordered Nixon to surrender the tapes.
- 3:18The House Judiciary Committee approved articles
- 3:21of impeachment. With Republican support. On August
- 3:268th, 1974, Nixon addressed the nation. The next
- 3:30day at noon, he resigned, becoming the first
- 3:33and only U .S. President to resign from office.
- 3:37His resignation letter contained just one sentence.
- 3:40I hereby resign the office of President of the
- 3:43United States. The problem with Nixon was not
- 3:47that he planned or was part of the burglary.
- 3:50But when he found out about it, he did not bring
- 3:53it forward. He then covered it up. And that is
- 3:57what led to his downfall. Did you know that Gerald
- 4:00Ford's path to the presidency was unlike any
- 4:02other in American history? Ford was born in 1913
- 4:06in Omaha, Nebraska and raised in Grand Rapids,
- 4:09Michigan. He was a gifted athlete, playing football
- 4:13for the University of Michigan, even receiving
- 4:15offers from the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers.
- 4:19But Ford chose law school instead, graduating
- 4:22from Yale Law School in 1941. During World War
- 4:25II, Ford served aboard the USS Monterey, participating
- 4:29in major Pacific operations. After the war, he
- 4:33returned to Michigan, practiced law, taught business
- 4:35courses, and coached football. In 1948, Ford
- 4:39was elected to the U .S. House of Representatives,
- 4:41where he served 25 years. He became House Republican
- 4:45Minority Leader, known for honesty, moderation,
- 4:49and a calm, steady temperament. Ford never sought
- 4:53national executive office. He never ran for vice
- 4:56president. He never ran for president. But history
- 5:01had other plans. Did you know Ford became vice
- 5:05president because of a constitutional amendment
- 5:07ratified only a few years earlier? When Vice
- 5:12President Sparrow Agnew resigned in 1973, the
- 5:1525th Amendment allowed President Nixon to nominate
- 5:19a replacement. Congress overwhelmingly confirmed
- 5:22Ford, and he became Vice President on December
- 5:256, 1973. Just eight months later, Nixon resigned,
- 5:32and Ford became the 38th President of the United
- 5:36States. Ford famously told the nation, Our long
- 5:40nation nightmare is over. Then he added, Our
- 5:44Constitution works. Ford was the only person
- 5:47in American history to serve both vice president
- 5:50and president without being elected to either
- 5:53office. Did you know that Ford inherited one
- 5:57of the most difficult presidencies in modern
- 6:00history? He faced high inflation, energy shortages,
- 6:04economic stagnation, lingering wounds from Vietnam,
- 6:09a distrustful public, a Congress dominated by
- 6:12Democrats, and a Republican Party damaged by
- 6:15Watergate. Ford believed his mission was to restore
- 6:19trust. He traveled, spoke plainly, and worked
- 6:23to calm the nation. One month after taking office,
- 6:26Ford made a decision he believed was necessary
- 6:28for healing. He issued a full and unconditional
- 6:31pardon to Richard Nixon. The decision was controversial
- 6:35and cost him politically, but Ford insisted it
- 6:39was the right thing to do for the country. Ford
- 6:43served until January 20, 1977, when he was succeeded
- 6:47by Jimmy Carter. The stories of Richard Nixon
- 6:50and Gerald Ford remind us that leadership is
- 6:52shaped not only by ambition, but by character.
- 6:56Nixon's rise and fall shows the weight of responsibility.
- 7:00Ford's quiet steadiness shows the power of integrity
- 7:03in a moment of national crisis. Thank you for
- 7:06joining me on this Did You Know episode of Voices
