- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Hey guys, welcome back to another episode of Skincare Anarchy.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: This is your host, Isa, and I am so excited about our interview today because this is a brand that I have really, really enjoyed for quite a while now.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Um, and it's been something that I've been very much looking forward to since I started Skincare Anarchy because they have just amazing, amazing products.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: So without further ado, I would love to introduce you guys to the co-founder of Peace Out Skincare, Junior Pence.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the show, Junior.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much for giving us the honor of hosting you.
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: Thank you so much for having me.
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: I'm glad to be a part of this.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I'm very excited to host you.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: And and you know, I really want to learn all about you guys because, like I said, I've been a huge fan, you know, for quite some years now.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: And um, I know there's a really cool story behind uh what you know it started things off.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: So if you could walk us down memory lane maybe and give us the inside scoop on that, that'd be great.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so it started in 20 um 14.
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: Um I my husband, uh Enrico, who's the founder of Peace Out, um, along with myself, he suffered from severe acne, cystic acne, um, as you know, we would call probably pizza face in the US, which is a very derogatory term, but he likes to use the verbiage, that word, because that's basically you know what he was called when he suffered from acne.
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: And you know, he grew up in Italy, and in Italy um in the 90s, there was you know, 2000s, there was no sort of um remedy for acne.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: There was, you know, they didn't even have proactin or clear cell or anything like that.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: Back then, they put him on accutane.
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: None of his family suffered from acne.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: He was the only one.
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: So, as you can imagine, none of his friends have it was very difficult on him.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: He, you know, went from being extremely extroverted, you know, uh racing cars to being extremely introverted.
- 2:07SPEAKER_02: Um and, you know, he went on Accutane and it cleared it up, but it never fully 100% cleared his skin.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: He would still suffer from breakouts.
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: Um, and it would just kind of pull him back into what he, that emotional state, that mental state that he had when he was a teenager suffering from it.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: And in his late 20s, you know, he would still, you know, continually get the breakouts, stopped Accutane.
- 2:34SPEAKER_02: Um, because back then Accutane was not, you know, 100% um the best for you, if you can say that.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: Um, and so you know, when I met him, he would have these occasional breakouts, and you know, I didn't really suffer from acne in the way that he did.
- 2:51SPEAKER_02: So for me, it was very, you know, why don't you want to go outside?
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: Why do you why do you just want to stay in inside?
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: You know, I was in entertainment at that point, so I was always doing something or going to an event, and he would never want to be a part of it because even if he had one pimple or two pimples, it would still um just bring up all these feelings and emotions.
- 3:12SPEAKER_02: And so one day he just said to me, you know, I have to figure out how to get rid of this because I don't want to continue living like this, you know.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: I don't want to get a breakout and then not want to go outside or go to the gym or go to an event or go hang out with friends.
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: So he was in a drugstore, believe it was Rite Aid or CVS near where we lived.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: And he said to me, you know, I'm gonna go check out some other things because I've tried everything and, you know, spot treatments, nothing really worked.
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: And he's like stumbled into the hydrocholoid section, let's where runners and band-aids are, right?
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, very similar to what you put on a blister to encapsulate it to protect it, or you burn yourself and you're protecting your skin with a hydrocholoid band-aid.
- 4:02SPEAKER_02: Um, so he was like thought to himself, okay, if this hydrocholoid produces a barrier around my pimple and sucks it out like it does with the other um fluids when you, you know, have a blister or or a burn or something of that nature, then it should be able to work.
- 4:25SPEAKER_02: So let's go home and slap some salicylic acid on my face and throw this, you know, square patch on my forehead and cover these four pimples I have and go to sleep.
- 4:40SPEAKER_02: Well, when he woke up in the morning, he had a taken off a couple layers of his skin, um, but and had a square on his forehead.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: But he didn't even care about that because what he realized is that all the pimples were gone.
- 4:57SPEAKER_02: They had basically flattened themselves, he had sucked them out into the hydrocholoid.
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: So um, to know my husband is to know that he once he gets something in his brain, he has to find the solution or solve the problem for it.
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: Because if he doesn't, it will, his OCD will drive him nuts.
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: So his next step was researching.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, he researched sal acid, acne treatments, healing treatments, you know, had anybody infused, you know, anything into a hydrocholoid because hydrocholoid is notoriously unstable.
- 5:37SPEAKER_02: Uh, and for in in order for anything to be um uh encapsulated in a hydrocholoid, it has to remain steady at a certain temperature for a long period of time.
- 5:50SPEAKER_02: Otherwise, it just discolors or becomes unusable.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: Um, and you know, he even back then in 2000 you know, 15 when we 14, 15 was all about clean skincare.
- 6:04SPEAKER_02: So he has a habit of reading every single label, chemistry books, um, everything that has to do with making skincare, developing skincare, clean products, what you use.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: He will research down to where the product was developed, the ingredients that were used.
- 6:23SPEAKER_02: He's methodical about this.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: So even back then, he never put anything on his face that he felt was not a clean product.
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: The problem with hydrocholid is it inherently it is not clean.
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: It's made with petroleum or other um ingredients.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: So, you know, he knew that he needed to create the patch.
- 6:42SPEAKER_02: This was gonna work.
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: Um, he needed to figure out, you know, if anybody had ever done something like this before and if there was a lab in the world that could do it.
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: As he's researching, he's calling labs around the world.
- 6:56SPEAKER_02: They're telling him you can't infuse active ingredients inside of a hydrocholoid, it just does not work.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: Um, no one has ever done it before.
- 7:06SPEAKER_02: If somebody had done it before, then it would have been a proctor and gamble, a Johnson and Johnson, or somebody like that, because they would have just figured out, you know, they're behemoths.
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: And so he, you know, talked to like 70, I think, labs all over the world.
- 7:23SPEAKER_02: And everyone shut him down.
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: And then one night I remember it was like probably four in the morning, and I just hear him say, Oh, I found it.
- 7:31SPEAKER_02: And I was like, What'd you find?
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm in the sleeping.
- 7:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm sleeping, and I'm like, What did you find?
- 7:37SPEAKER_02: Like, oh, did you lose something?
- 7:38SPEAKER_02: He's like, he had was started researching hydrocholiid and patents, and he had found that there was a guy that was mixing um ingredients into hydrocholoid for wound care, antibacterial ingredients to use for burns and treating victims in hospitals.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: So he looked up who was making it, and um the lab that was actually making it was 15 miles from our house.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh, talk about Megabee.
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: That's that's I know, I know.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: Talk about like serendipity, right?
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: And he was like, he called them the next morning, and they were like, Yeah, come on in, we can definitely do that for you.
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: So he like went in and you know, he knew specifically what he wanted.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: He wanted to make an, you know, an OTC product.
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: He wanted it to be, you know, the first of its kind medical active acne patch.
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: Um, and so it took about six months because salacid and hydrocholid are very touchy thely.
- 8:46SPEAKER_02: Um, and if you don't keep it at a certain temperature, along with the aloe vera um and the other ingredients in inside of the zinc and stuff inside of the hydrocholid, it will turn it black or dark.
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, and so there's a lot of stability, a lot of testing, a lot of like back and forth with the mixing of the product.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: Finally, they got it perfect.
- 9:10SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, and so we started testing it on people and our friends and their kids, and they were like, okay, so I need a hundred more of these.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: My daughter just ran out, and Enrico's like, well, I only have 10.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: So, you know, so you know, we knew what we had, and um we did a lot of testing on people on him, you know, and it was amazing because I just remember like how excited he was because he would like literally will himself a pimple just so he could put one on his face, yeah.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: Like experiment at home, yeah.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's like, I'm gonna rub some butter on my face, and I'm gonna eat a lot of chocolate and pizza, and I'm gonna see what happens.
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: And I was like, knock yourself out.
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: Um, and he did, and it's just it was amazing because it would he would go to bed, and in six hours, sometimes he would wear it during the day and it would just suck all of it out, you know, even if it was just barely starting to scratch the surface, right?
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: You know, that tingly feeling that you get when you have a pimple, and it would just be, you know, healed.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: It would just be, you know, there would be no redness, no inflammation, the the pus inside of your pimple is gone.
- 10:24SPEAKER_02: And, you know, so from there it was the building of the brand.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: Um, and at the time he was build starting Peace Out, I was working with him to kind of on the sidelines because I I already had a corporate career and I wasn't really ready to give that up yet.
- 10:43SPEAKER_02: Um, and so we started to develop the brand.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: And you know, my questions to him as being a marketer is okay, what is your vision for the brand?
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: Like what's your basic bottom line vision?
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: And and you know, and his basic bottom line vision was that you know, he wanted to create uh first-to-market products that were easy to use, not doctor-driven or scary, that were easy one-step solutions for your skincare needs.
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: And he wanted it to be inclusive.
- 11:18SPEAKER_02: And the reason for this was that he wanted products that worked, and if they worked on him, because he tests everything on himself.
- 11:28SPEAKER_02: I mean, even to this day, nothing, nothing goes out until he's like used a hundred of them and he's 100%, you know, okay with it.
- 11:38SPEAKER_02: Um, and that he thinks it's perfect and he's seen the results on his face.
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: It's gone.
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: I'm the smell tester, so it has to get past my nose, otherwise, it doesn't go out either.
- 11:49SPEAKER_02: Um, because I have a very sensitive or unique sense of smell, apparently, to skincare, which I'd never noticed before.
- 11:56SPEAKER_02: Um, and the other thing was that he wanted to be inclusive because it was really, you know, being LGBTQ.
- 12:03SPEAKER_02: Um, he never had that sort of community and he wanted it to just be for everyone, but he wanted to create a safe space for people with acne to feel beautiful, to feel, you know, skin inclusive, to really be able to come and communicate with him and and not be ashamed to kind of like post their images or their photos or say, you know, I'm having difficulty, I struggle, my mental health is, you know, I don't want to go outside.
- 12:28SPEAKER_02: And so that was a big part of the foundation of how we built the brand moving forward.
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: Um, I mean, that's amazing though.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: And I want to just, I want to just say, like, you know, what a brand you've built.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: Because honestly, if I'm being very, you know, just recalling correctly, like, I mean, honestly, PSAT was the first brand I noticed in this category of like true spot treatment for acne that really resonated with me.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: Because I also grew up with acne.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: I think a lot of us, you know, have.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: But mine was my family, like, you know, when you had said the pizza face thing, my whole family on my mother's side, one of my aunts actually, she had a very similar story with like, you know, dealing with that and then the scarring that resulted afterwards because you know, she grew up in a community and uh, you know, geographically they didn't have options, right?
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: When she grew up.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: And so um, she was very, like, very similar to how you were explaining explaining the journey of like not wanting to go anywhere if there was a breakout.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: You know, like the whole like the mental health aspect for her was also there.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: But I remember when I was starting to get acne, she was always in the back of my mind in the sense of like I was always like hyper-vigilant, right?
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: Like with my own breakouts and like trying to find the best way to treat them.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: And I remember even thinking, you know, when I was like 14 years old, that was, you know, the only thing you could do is go to a dermatologist.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: No one talked about spot treatment.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: And I even remember as a kid, like, well, can I just put something on this one part of my face, you know, instead of putting a systemic drug in my body and then having possible reproductive, you know, issues down the line, you know, it was a huge thing.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: So I mean, you guys really kind of broke that, you know, that that terrible standard we were living in.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: I mean, I remember when I first tried peace out, it was, you know, I wasn't even it way before obviously skincare anarchy, but I was just getting started on my own personal journey of maintaining my breakouts and finding those kind of solutions.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: And I just remember everything you said for me as a consumer resonated.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: I mean, the packaging was awesome, you know, it felt approachable, it felt usable, felt like something I could, you know, obviously travel with and enjoy and not have to worry about that really sterile, you know, feel of the you know, white packaging, no lines, you know, just like Times New Roman, that stuff.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: Like I just always hated that, you know, even as a kid.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: But I I hear you, you know, and everything you guys did resonated, right?
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: It just resonated.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: And so I think one of the big questions is really like I know you you just started talking about it, but the um the fact that it is also something that you've brought to the LGBTQ community.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: I want to really learn about that as well.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: Because I think um when we talk about acne, this is a really interesting topic for me, as a even for a medical side, because a lot of the patients will, you know, come in and they are very self-conscious because it's still something that it's part of their development still, you know what I mean, at that younger age.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: They're figuring a lot of things out.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: And I think acne being thrown in there, it makes it even harder, you know what I mean, than everything else we're dealing with.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: So I would love to hear your um take on that, you know, in terms of the the message you guys are sending out for this community specifically.
- 15:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, I think specifically for the community, like I said, Enrico did not really never had a place.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: I mean, he lived in Italy.
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: Italy didn't have, you know, real friendly relationship with LGBTQ back then when he was a teenager.
- 15:46SPEAKER_02: Um and you know, for him, you know, knowing who he was, suffering from acne in the way that he did, not having anybody around him that understood, you know, and Italians are very famous for being like, oh, it'll get better, you know, just you know, suck it up.
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: Um he, you know, was very adamant about the fact that he wanted to create a safe space.
- 16:10SPEAKER_02: He wanted a safe zone.
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: He knew what it was like to have to come out.
- 16:14SPEAKER_02: And, you know, at a time when all you see is, you know, we were still back even in the 2000s, right?
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: It was like everybody was like becoming perfect.
- 16:24SPEAKER_02: I mean, you know, it was like proactive.
- 16:27SPEAKER_02: That's all he saw on TV.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: You're never gonna be Adam Levine.
- 16:30SPEAKER_02: If you do not use proactive, you know, you'll never be proactive, you'll never like nobody will love you.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: Like that's what he had in his brain, you know.
- 16:37SPEAKER_02: And coming out was even harder because he was like, you know, how am I gonna come out?
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: I mean, you know, it's tough enough, but being gay is like, you know, that's that's a whole nother level.
- 16:49SPEAKER_02: So when we created the brand, it was very important in the beginning that we, you know, were very gay founded, LGBTQ founded, you know, we are a safe space, we are a place that you can come and not feel ashamed of your skin.
- 17:03SPEAKER_02: You know, it's and we will provide you a solution to help you get through that.
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: And if you want to talk about it, let's talk about it.
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: You know, we started blogging about mental health very early before anybody was doing it, and talking about, you know, being skin positive, loving your skin, all skin is beautiful, you know.
- 17:21SPEAKER_02: Um live life unfiltered, do not be afraid to go outside, wear a patch.
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: You know, it's like all of those things of empowerment that you now are such a standard practice for any brand, you know, was you know, was foreign to a lot of people because you know, nobody talked about, you know, being skin inclusive, nobody talked about, you know, skincare for all.
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: It was just very segmented, even back then.
- 17:50SPEAKER_02: It was, you know, you had your, I'll say the bad word, anti-aging.
- 17:55SPEAKER_02: You had your like teen, pre-teen, clear cell, whatever.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: You had your proactive.
- 18:01SPEAKER_02: And it was really not geared towards a lot of people.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: It was just very straightforward, directional.
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: If you have this, that's it.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: If you don't use it, you're never gonna be accepted.
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: You're always gonna be, you know, an outcast in somewhere.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: And so it was very important for him, not just for the LGBTQ people, but for everyone.
- 18:20SPEAKER_02: And you know, the funny thing is that he gets stopped all the time, like Seattle, where we live, we'll be in New York.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: It recently happened on our on our flight um in the airport, going to New York this last time, and like somebody came up to him and was like, Oh my god, thank you for making your acting bath, because it is really helped me kind of like continue living my life because I used to get so depressed.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: And you know, people come up to them all.
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: It's just it's it's so random and it's so funny.
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: But even at Sephora, you know, the Sephora team, the squad members, you know, they're like, I use your product, you know, I had severe, you know, acne, rosacea, your acne serum, your bomb like help calm my skin.
- 19:07SPEAKER_02: And you know, for him to hear that is extremely empowering for him because that's that's exactly what he wanted to do.
- 19:14SPEAKER_02: That's exactly what he wanted to create.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: And it makes him even want to create more, you know, want to figure out solutions for more things because you know, he he has a pipeline in his head that I swear goes to 2030 already.
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: Like focused so far ahead that I have to like stop him sometimes.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: Like visionaries.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: I mean, I feel like that's like their biggest problem with visionaries.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: It's like, you know, you gotta just put them on pause for a minute, you know.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: Like, hold on, hold on.
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: We're not in 3,000 yet.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: We're yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:46SPEAKER_02: He's like, so 2027.
- 19:48SPEAKER_02: I'm like, nope, nope, we're not talking 2027, right now.
- 19:52SPEAKER_02: We'll go to 25.
- 19:53SPEAKER_02: How's that?
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I mean, yeah, it's interesting though.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: Is it I want to just say I want to say one thing though.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: It's like, because the thing is, here's this is such a pain spot, right?
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: I mean, Junior, I think in the industry, like I'm sure you got you've seen it time and time again, especially from the marketing perspective, is that there are so many brands.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's like there are so many brands and they think that they're filling a space and they're not.
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: And that's the crazy part is that when someone really is filling that space, you just immediately see it as a consumer.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: It's like a no, and I try to tell people this because we have a lot of people that reach out for recommendations, and it's like, you know, the biggest recommendation I think anyone could ever give you as a consumer is when something works, trust that it works, and there's a real reason why it works.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: And I think when you were explaining the scientific, you know, the story of the science, you know, with the hydrocholoid, I it would just, you know, I lit up my my geek side lit up, you know what I mean?
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: Because that's the work, you know, that's the real work of figuring out where do I really fill this white space from what angle and what do I need to fill it?
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: Because right now we're loving, I mean, I love where we're at, right?
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: As an industry, where we're talking about biotech, we're talking about all these things, but you know what we're not talking about?
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: We still haven't fixed a lot of the fundamental problems, you know what I mean?
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: Like in terms of there's so many things we still haven't addressed.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: So I feel like we just keep moving forward, but it's like we're not fixing the problem.
- 21:17SPEAKER_00: But with peace out and your products, you guys are really genuinely like you took acne and you created a solution where there was none.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: And and that's to me, like that's why I feel like the brand is timeless because everyone's always gonna get acne and we're always gonna need a real solution.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: And I wish we could get there with so many other problems, you know what I mean, that I see with like dermatology and stuff.
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: But I mean, we're getting there, I know, as an industry, but I think that's where for me as a consumer, you guys shine so bright because your products are not just in pretty packaging, you know what I mean?
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: Here we go, easy to relate to.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: No, they really work.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: And like if you put them tomorrow in white sterile packaging, someone would pick them up and they would still work just as good.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: That's what matters.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: Because right now we have that conversation, right?
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: We're having the conversation of well, what things need to be more approachable.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: Things need to be easier to understand.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: You know, in terms of like if you're a 15-year-old, you can pick up pick this up and feel comfortable having it in your bag.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: But at the end of the day, you can't compromise like efficacy when you do that.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: And that's where I see a lot of people get mixed up these days is like, yeah, you made a cool, fun, poppy brand, but you didn't put anything inside of it, you know?
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, that's yeah.
- 22:31SPEAKER_02: To your point, that's you know, that's something that we we challenge ourselves with every day, you know, um, the efficacy of the brand and keeping that and maintaining that.
- 22:41SPEAKER_02: I think for us, you know, it's like the thing that, you know, we really kind of struggle with is the other patches that, you know, and the and the and the really driving home why ours are the best, you know, why we are the only OTC medical pimple patch on the market.
- 23:00SPEAKER_02: We are the only patented, you know, acne fighting healing infused, clean hydrocholoid.
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: And that is a big thing for us because a lot of people just say, Oh, I'll buy this for 15 bucks.
- 23:14SPEAKER_02: And it's just a patch.
- 23:16SPEAKER_02: There's nothing to it, there's no healing properties to it.
- 23:20SPEAKER_02: It's dirty, you know, and I get in trouble for saying dirty all the time, but you know, we Enrico was so adamant after he created the pipple patch.
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: He's like, okay, the next step is to make it clean.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: And I was like, Hyderical it?
- 23:35SPEAKER_02: He's like, yes.
- 23:36SPEAKER_02: He's like, I will figure this out and I will make the very first medicated OTC clean piple patch.
- 23:42SPEAKER_02: And I was like, okay, I've no, I know better to like say, okay, babe, go right ahead, you know.
- 23:48SPEAKER_02: I know to be like, he's gonna figure it out.
- 23:50SPEAKER_02: And it took him two years, but he figured it out.
- 23:53SPEAKER_02: And, you know, we created the very first clean hydrocholid, you know, on the market, used for skincare because it was extremely important to him.
- 24:01SPEAKER_02: Because he's like, you know, putting petroleum products on your face for some people are not good.
- 24:07SPEAKER_02: And they don't realize that.
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: And you know, we have to do a lot of education around it, you know, and even with our pore strips, they're clean as well.
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: You know, you have to be clean at Sephora to be clean at Sephora.
- 24:17SPEAKER_02: And, you know, that was a big thing for him because he suffers from enlarged pores and it drives him insane.
- 24:23SPEAKER_02: He has the scraper, the scooper, the everything, you know, to get them out because he does, you know, he is an as an he's an active skincare, you know, not just connoisseur, but he's actively suffering from things still in his 30s.
- 24:40SPEAKER_02: And so he still is like, I have to figure the solutions out for these so that it's easy to use, it takes care of the situation, and there's a long-term lasting benefit, right?
- 24:50SPEAKER_02: So with our pore strips, it's hydrocholid, it's infused, it sucks the sebum out, it seals your pores, and it's a long-term thing.
- 25:00SPEAKER_02: So the more you use it, the better your pore appearance will be, right?
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: And it's clean.
- 25:05SPEAKER_02: So you can know that if you're putting it on your face, you're not just like with a regular strip ripping it off, leaving some of it on your skin still, or spreading it around here to the rest of your face.
- 25:17SPEAKER_02: And I think for for him, I mean, you know, one day you'll have to have a conversation with him about how his brain works because it's so yeah, because you you could literally talk to him for hours, like you know, but it is so driven, like in terms of what are the most efficacious ingredients, materials, products, delivery systems for him are gigantic.
- 25:44SPEAKER_02: You know, how do I make this product and stand by it?
- 25:48SPEAKER_02: Because if I stand by it, then I know my consumer will know that it works at the top level of what is out there.
- 25:58SPEAKER_02: And so I think for him, you know, he's always researching.
- 26:01SPEAKER_02: We have an incredible RD team, but he's always like, you know, we were just got back from Europe, and I swear we went into like 300 pharmacies, you know, or anything that had like skincare in it, because he he goes in and he just reads everything and he and he's like, just go sit outside, I'll be out in 30 minutes.
- 26:20SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I'm gonna walk, I'm gonna go walk around the block and do some side scene while you hang out in the pharmacy, okay?
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: Um sounds like all of our Sephora trips with the boyfriend.
- 26:32SPEAKER_02: Like, yes, yes, it is, but it's like that's that's what uh you know makes him you know obsessed.
- 26:40SPEAKER_02: And you you know, we he goes, you know, we went from Herod's to like the small little mom and pop because there's always something that like ignites his passion or his interest in, oh, that's a new delivery system.
- 26:54SPEAKER_02: Like, for example, you know, wrinkles patches, wrinkles patches are a micro needling patch.
- 27:02SPEAKER_02: It was the first of its kind that the ingredients were actually made out, or the needles are actually made out of the ingredients.
- 27:10SPEAKER_02: Other patches, well, before now it's pretty universal, but they used to just you had to wipe something on your skin and then you would press the microneedling, right?
- 27:21SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: But he was we were in um we were in LA and we were on large one, and we went into there was a used to be a Walgreens on large one.
- 27:30SPEAKER_02: I don't know if it's still there, and they were doing the flu shots, and the flu shots were microneedling.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: And he was like, They're giving flu shots to kids using micro needling patches, and he was like, and then all of a sudden I could just see his brain like run.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: And he's like, I'm gonna figure out how to do that.
- 27:52SPEAKER_02: And so, you know, he was like, I think it would be great for dark spots because hyperpigmentation after you have acne, which if you're an acne sufferer, you know, sometimes it will leave a dark spot on your skin or a little bit of scarring on your skin.
- 28:05SPEAKER_02: So he was like, and he has it, so you know, and he gets um sometimes when he gets pimples, he'll get like a dark spot after the pimple, and he, you know, drives him nuts because he can still see it.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: So he created the the dark spots patches so that you know they seep into the dark spot and they basically break it up, right?
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: Um, and you know, with wrinkles too, you know, he wanted to create a preventative patch because as he was gating into his you know late 20s, you know, he thought that that was the direction and he created wrinkles patches for that reason, you know.
- 28:45SPEAKER_02: Um, and so everything that he creates is his skin journey too, which I think is incredibly important.
- 28:50SPEAKER_02: So when we develop a product or he develops a product, it's based off of what his skin journey is or was, or what he thinks it's not like a real problem.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: Like it's like a real issue that he's addressing.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and that's see, that's where I see this makes so much more sense to me now because I was gonna tell you, Junior.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: I you know, my favorite uh primer for makeup is made by you guys, the piece out uh the instant pork, yeah.
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: The instant pore protector.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: I am obsessed with this.
- 29:23SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 29:23SPEAKER_00: Like I literally tell everybody, I'm like, I don't even care what makeup I have on.
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: This primer, it will fill every because I am an I was an acne sufferer.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: I do have the scar.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: I you know how they say they've got like the different types of scars, like there's ice pick scars, there's yeah.
- 29:40SPEAKER_00: So I have like a form of one of those scars, and like it's like a little divot, like a tiny one.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: And the problem with anyone who's ever had acne, everyone listening, you know, we deal with scarring, and it's the worst part of acne because that stuff takes forever if it even goes away.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: And you know, one of the biggest pain points is makeup because I remember, you know, growing up, like, you know, we all want to look flawless and beautiful and airbrushed, right?
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: And this was before any airbrushing, even you know, that was not a thing.
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: So I remember I would look at my friends' faces and I'd be like, why can't my makeup look like that?
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: You know, like why how does your makeup sit like that?
- 30:16SPEAKER_00: But mine doesn't.
- 30:16SPEAKER_00: Mine sinks into my pores, mine sinks into my scarring.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: And I remember feeling like, damn it, you know, like I have all the great products for makeup, but what I don't have is something that's gonna make it look good on my skin.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: And I feel like this product, I remember the first time I tried it out, I was like, this is amazing.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: Like this is like, I don't even need makeup on top of this.
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: I can put like a nice, you know, light powder or yeah or whatever, and it's gonna make my skin just look beautiful.
- 30:43SPEAKER_00: And because really, when I think about makeup, me personally as a consumer, and I think a lot of acne people, you know, that have post-acne like scarring, you can relate to this.
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: Our idea of makeup is it just should make my lick my skin should just look smooth and beautiful.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: And that's what I think good makeup is.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: And when you can make a product that creates that look for you, regardless of what makeup you choose, that's iconic.
- 31:06SPEAKER_00: And I I just wanted to give this specific product a huge shout out personally.
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: Because yeah, like I it's magic.
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: Like, please tell Enrico, like this is you've created magic in a in a bottle here with this one specifically, too, because it's it's perfect for people with acne.
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: And that's where, again, you know, going back to your point, Junior, like he's creating things out of a real need.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: It shows because those of us who actually went through an acne breakout, we know all of the related needs, you know, including, you know, the the wrinkles you were talking about, the uh the you know, the microneedling patches.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: That's a huge concern, you know.
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: We usually people who have severe acne, you can't really go through a lot of microneedling stuff at home.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: You have to go to professionals.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: So, you know, it's harder in that way of like maintenance.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: So it's really like he did think everything out, you know, it's like all the details were accounted for.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: And I love all of your patches, they all work.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: That's the best part.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: You know, it's like the products are to they're not just there to be there.
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: It's not like you guys created a line and said, Oh, dang, we have to expand into this category.
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: No, no, it's all like it works, you know, it's tried, true, tested, and made to work.
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: And so I think, you know, for all of the consumers, like that is what stands out from what I'm noticing.
- 32:22SPEAKER_00: You know, for me, it is, and I think that's where you guys really, for me as a brand, I don't think anyone could ever replace you.
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: They can make dupes.
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: Go ahead and make dupes.
- 32:29SPEAKER_02: That's so sweet of you.
- 32:31SPEAKER_00: No, make your dupes, go for it.
- 32:33SPEAKER_00: But it's not gonna be the same, you know, it's just not.
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: And the thing, and the reason is because you don't have the the real drive that creates good products, it comes from your heart, it comes from a real need, and it comes from like a place of understanding.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: And you can't dupe that.
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: Sorry, you just can't, yeah.
- 32:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, you can't, right?
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so yeah, I'm a huge fan.
- 32:51SPEAKER_00: I think I think whatever you guys come out with, I already know.
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: Like, it's like trusting the brand at one point, too, right?
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: As a consumer, like, you know, a lot of times we fall into the we fall into these pits of like we need 15 products by 15 different companies, and and I'm always like, Well, not really, you just need like one or two companies that are really doing what you need, you know, and stick to them because they're clearly figuring it out, you know.
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: And so that's why I really appreciated that you mentioned Enrico is creating products and it's part of his own journey because that really is, I think, you know, as a consumer, we want to be able to connect with founders on that level, you know, like, oh, okay, you do it for your own skin.
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: So that's why I want to do it for my skin.
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: And so, yeah, that's that's very special.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 33:34SPEAKER_02: Well, thank you.
- 33:34SPEAKER_02: I yeah, I mean, I'll let him know that I'm I think making it special and making it founder-led um and founder specific is very important for us as a brand and for our consumers to know that Enrico's not just making a product to make a product, but he's making a product to solve a solution.
- 33:51SPEAKER_02: And it's something that he's actually suffering from, and he knows that other people are suffering from.
- 33:58SPEAKER_02: And it's not just like, okay, spin the wheel.
- 34:01SPEAKER_02: What do we have in our line?
- 34:02SPEAKER_02: It's actually a thought process that is specific to you know the needs that he has and the needs of acne or acneic skin.
- 34:12SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: And I I actually want to ask you a question though, Junior.
- 34:15SPEAKER_00: I I really think it's such it would be such good advice for our listeners because a lot of people that tune in are are small brand founders, you know, they want to be, they're on that journey.
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: And I think one of the biggest pain points for them is marketing, right?
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: As it can be, especially I I can see it, you know.
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: I'm not I'm not in it with them in terms of a skincare brand, but I can see why because it's crazy out here, right?
- 34:37SPEAKER_00: With the marketing.
- 34:37SPEAKER_00: So, like I would love for I would love for you to share some advice because I think that's so important.
- 34:42SPEAKER_00: We I it really does make a make or break a brand these days, you know, the way you market it.
- 34:46SPEAKER_02: So I think, you know, I think the you know for me, honesty is in your marketing is always going to be number one, right?
- 34:54SPEAKER_02: Always um portraying your brand in the truest light that you could possibly portray it.
- 35:00SPEAKER_02: If you're an acne brand, show acne skin if you're if you're if you're shooting acne products, you know, and acne is not just acne goes from one pimple to act severe acne, right?
- 35:12SPEAKER_02: So there is a range, and it's important, at least for us too, to show that range, right?
- 35:17SPEAKER_02: Because we know that there are different types of skin, and different types of skin are just, you know, whether you're oily or dry, I mean, it's it's the gamut, right?
- 35:30SPEAKER_02: So just be honest and speak to your consumer in a way that is super easy to understand and relatable to them.
- 35:37SPEAKER_02: I think from a marketing perspective, to it's the wild, wild west out there.
- 35:41SPEAKER_02: I mean, things are changing so rapidly in terms of TikTok and Instagram and spend, affiliate marketing, you know, versus regular PR, which is just, you know, everything is becoming kind of like this really weird sort of moment where you have to kind of choose your lane and figure out who your consumer is and go after that consumer.
- 36:03SPEAKER_02: Like for us, TikTok is a huge part of what we do.
- 36:06SPEAKER_02: And it's not just because TikTok is TikTok, but because we can tell stories on TikTok.
- 36:11SPEAKER_02: We can reach a large consumer.
- 36:13SPEAKER_02: There's a large acne consumer we know that lives on TikTok in our demographic.
- 36:18SPEAKER_02: There, we also use Instagram telling our story, you know, reaching a different consumer.
- 36:24SPEAKER_02: I think for me, you know, because I feel the pain of marketing too.
- 36:28SPEAKER_02: I feel what it what it means to have to spend across multiple different channels.
- 36:32SPEAKER_02: And when you're a small brand and you don't have a lot of money to put into marketing, you know, and even when we think about doing marketing, you know, we always talk as a team, it's like, what is our number one pathway, right?
- 36:48SPEAKER_02: Well, TikTok's the number one pathway for us.
- 36:51SPEAKER_02: Then, you know, it's like Google, then it's like, you know, affiliate marketing.
- 36:56SPEAKER_02: So, and then you need to figure out, you know, building your community.
- 37:01SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think marketing also is a big part of marketing, is sampling, having people try your products, building a community from that, because you want that person, even if they just have five followers, if they talk about your product, those five followers are going to tell five other followers.
- 37:19SPEAKER_02: It's the ink spot method, right?
- 37:21SPEAKER_02: It's so old school, but it's so true, you know, that it still works for everybody so well.
- 37:27SPEAKER_02: And I think that for me, it's like, don't be afraid to take challenges or risks in your marketing to talk about your product or push your product.
- 37:37SPEAKER_02: And what I mean about that is, you know, be bold about who you are in your marketing, you know, be bold about your product, you know, state your claims, you know, state why you feel that you're the best.
- 37:50SPEAKER_02: You know, you have to grab the attention of your consumer because, like you said, there are so many brands, there's so much messaging that you have to be adventurous and you have to take the lead in talking about your product and putting it in front of the consumer.
- 38:10SPEAKER_02: Because now they say a consumer needs to see something nine to 12 times just to have it resonate because there's just so much feed that's going on in their own brain.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:23SPEAKER_02: So, you know, think about your marketing, be smart about your marketing, your dollar spend, the way you speak about your product.
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: But, you know, you gotta have a great catchy tagline.
- 38:34SPEAKER_02: Have your clinicals ready, have you know how your product, your BNAs are extremely important.
- 38:40SPEAKER_02: I think for skincare, those are kind of like the big things, right?
- 38:44SPEAKER_02: Like you said, you can have a flashy advertising, flashy product and stuff.
- 38:47SPEAKER_02: But at the end of the day, people want to say, okay, I can see the before, I can see the after.
- 38:52SPEAKER_02: I can see it in real life on TikTok when the girl's pulling her pimple patch or the guy's pulling his pork strip off of his face and all the gunks inside of it.
- 39:02SPEAKER_02: You know, I can see the claims, works in six hours.
- 39:05SPEAKER_02: You know, so I think the important thing from a marketer now is to cut through the noise, is to be as straightforward and as bold as you possibly can be on the channels that work for you where your consumer is living every single day.
- 39:19SPEAKER_00: That makes so much sense.
- 39:20SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: That's such solid advice.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: I mean, I it makes sense hearing it from you, you know.
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: I think uh that's why I asked you.
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: I'm like, I feel like when we hear things from true experts, like we take it seriously because it just doesn't, I mean, right now, everything you said resonates.
- 39:34SPEAKER_00: I mean, as a consumer, I see ads all the time.
- 39:37SPEAKER_00: And it's like, if I don't see you guys actually demonstrating what you do, most likely I'm never gonna click on your ad.
- 39:42SPEAKER_00: It doesn't matter if it pops up 50 times, you know, on my screen.
- 39:45SPEAKER_00: So yeah, totally makes sense.
- 39:47SPEAKER_00: But, you know, Junior, I want to ask you, you know, as a round out question, and thank you so much for that advice.
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: It was awesome.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: And I as a round, I really want to ask, like, you know, um, going forward, you know, for Peace Out, like have you guys thought about like what I know that uh Enrico has his 2030 plans, you know, in the works, but like in the near future, is there anything you can share with us or um you know, anything new coming up that we should look forward to?
- 40:10SPEAKER_02: Well, we just launched our pore stick, um, which is our mini little pork cleanser uh scrub, which is amazing.
- 40:17SPEAKER_02: It's doing phenomenal.
- 40:19SPEAKER_02: We love it.
- 40:19SPEAKER_02: Enrico, I think, uses it more than he probably should because he keeps asking me if I have if he could use mine.
- 40:26SPEAKER_02: Um we just launched our first cleanser, which we're totally in love with.
- 40:32SPEAKER_02: And we have a new revolutionary um eye patch that is now out, which I'll have to send you to try if you'd love.
- 40:40SPEAKER_02: It's um a first market product that fits the entire eye.
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: It's specifically made for um helping with jubi eyes or aging eyes.
- 40:51SPEAKER_02: Um, I'd say aging, and it's probably a bad word to say, but um, you know, and for the lightning and hydration of your under eye.
- 41:00SPEAKER_02: So it really encapsulates your entire eye.
- 41:03SPEAKER_02: Um, and it's amazing because Enrico lives in them, I think.
- 41:08SPEAKER_02: Um, so does the most of our team.
- 41:10SPEAKER_02: Um, and you can really see the results because it's the first, and and they the thing that's unique about them too is that they fit every face different, right?
- 41:18SPEAKER_02: So they for some people they go, they can fit perfectly under your eyebrow, some people they go above your eyebrow, but it really does firm and tighten and lift, you know.
- 41:27SPEAKER_02: And I think the other thing for me is that the products that we have that will be coming out after this are really, you know, building out our acne category in a much bigger way and paying attention to some of the areas that um, you know, I think when you're building out a true acne category, you should really pay attention to.
- 41:48SPEAKER_02: And 2024 is going to be a very exciting year for us because that's the direction that we're going in.
- 41:55SPEAKER_02: I think also you're gonna see some other maybe side hustles from Peace Out um coming about, which is pretty exciting.
- 42:05SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, and Enrico loves skincare, but he loves other things just as much.
- 42:13SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, he's an entire health nut.
- 42:16SPEAKER_02: So, you know, it's not just skin, it's internal for him as well.
- 42:20SPEAKER_02: So, you know, um there's some pretty exciting stuff that I'll keep you posted on.
- 42:24SPEAKER_01: But I think, you know, the iPatches are the next.
- 42:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, I'm excited for you know what's coming down the pipeline, you know, in 2024 and and and the additional little um side piece out brands that we'll have popping up here and there.
- 42:41SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 42:42SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh, you got me really excited.
- 42:43SPEAKER_00: I have to know everything, and I'm gonna keep bugging you guys because I want to know when things come out.
- 42:48SPEAKER_00: Because I yeah, I love the brand.
- 42:50SPEAKER_00: I really do.
- 42:50SPEAKER_02: You know, I mean, bug me anytime you want, please.
- 42:54SPEAKER_02: Bug me.
- 42:54SPEAKER_02: I love being bugged.
- 42:56SPEAKER_00: No, I mean, honestly, I I really, really can't wait because I I really feel like you guys are one of the few brands that I genuinely mean this from my heart.
- 43:04SPEAKER_00: You when you create things, it shows, you know, and I've not tried a single product in the whole range that I haven't loved.
- 43:11SPEAKER_00: I really haven't.
- 43:11SPEAKER_00: And I thank you so much.
- 43:14SPEAKER_00: No, it's it's true, it's true.
- 43:15SPEAKER_00: You guys are just killing it.
- 43:17SPEAKER_00: And I think, you know, for everyone listening out there, if you have acne, if you've ever had acne, you suffer from any kind of sequelae because of the acne, like scarring or hyperpigmentation, this is the best brand for acne right now, in my opinion.
- 43:29SPEAKER_00: I think that you want to be able to shop for things from people who know what they're talking about.
- 43:35SPEAKER_00: As a consumer, like I said, for me, that's not always number one.
- 43:38SPEAKER_00: If you don't know what you're talking about, if you've never suffered it, you've never gone through it, it's hard for you to come up with a solution.
- 43:43SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's the honest truth.
- 43:45SPEAKER_00: I it's like across industries, it's like that.
- 43:47SPEAKER_00: So if you guys are really looking for solutions that are not gonna break your bank, most importantly, also, like this is the best option, honestly.
- 43:56SPEAKER_00: It's it's going to treat the problem, and then you have our something to really fall back on.
- 44:01SPEAKER_00: And I always encourage our listeners, you know, find that brand you can fall on, you know, when you need them.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: And unfortunately, as you know, Junior, right now we have this crazy amount of brands, like I said, but also the price points are out of the roof, you know, like just ridiculous.
- 44:15SPEAKER_00: And I when I think about Gen Z and the younger, you know, generation, they can't afford that, you know, like$200 for one product.
- 44:22SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I think it's just it's a killer brand, and you guys are really, really nailing it with everything.
- 44:27SPEAKER_00: So, you know, huge kudos to you and thank you again so much for this opportunity.
- 44:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:32SPEAKER_02: Thank you so much for taking the time, and I really appreciate your kind words about the brand.
- 44:35SPEAKER_02: And anytime you want to chat about anything, you just let me know.
- 44:39SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm happy to jump on with you.
- 44:41SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, that would be amazing.
- 44:42SPEAKER_00: And I probably take you up on that offer.
- 44:44SPEAKER_00: So thank you so much.
