- 0:49Hello, everybody, and welcome to Have Faith, Let It Begin. My name is Angel
- 0:52Santana, and today we are making room for a personal conversation,
- 0:56one that begins with honesty, including my own.
- 0:59So before I introduce our very special guest, I need to acknowledge something about myself.
- 1:06There was a time when I was transphobic. I was someone who turned the other
- 1:12way, and at times I even became upset about something that I hadn't taken the time to understand.
- 1:19That isn't easy to say out loud, but if I'm going to ask people to come here
- 1:24and share their truth, I need to be willing to tell the truth about myself.
- 1:30What I've learned is that understanding another person begins with being willing to listen.
- 1:36When I've already judged someone, I haven't left much room to hear them.
- 1:41I have also learned that communication isn't about seeing who can speak the loudest.
- 1:48We learn by talking with one another, asking honest questions and listening to the answers.
- 1:55Even when those answers challenge something that we've believed.
- 1:59And as someone walking in faith and seeking to serve God, I have a responsibility
- 2:04to spread love and share his word.
- 2:06So I want everybody to know that Christ teaches us to call and be more compassionate
- 2:13and calls me to examine my own heart and the way I treat others.
- 2:18I have had to ask myself, am I approaching this person with love?
- 2:25Am I listening? Am I showing the compassion that I speak about?
- 2:29That's why I felt the need to create this episode, this series,
- 2:34and one that I think will open and hopefully teach others why.
- 2:39And why I want to continue conversations like this as a series.
- 2:43I want to make room for people to tell their own stories, for questions to be
- 2:47asked respectfully, and for understanding to grow.
- 2:52So with that being said, today I am grateful, I am honored to welcome my very good friend.
- 2:58Her name is Emmy. She joins us to share her personal perspective as a trans
- 3:02woman navigating a world where many people haven't shared her experiences.
- 3:09When we discussed this conversation, she made a distinctive distinction that stayed with me.
- 3:15There is a difference between someone saying, I don't date trans women,
- 3:20and someone saying, I only date real women.
- 3:23She wants to talk about that difference while also making clear that she doesn't
- 3:28assume everyone is transphobic.
- 3:31Emmy, thank you so much for trusting me. Thank you for being here and trusting
- 3:36me with your conversation.
- 3:38And I want to give you room and the platform to speak your own words.
- 3:42If there's anything you'd rather keep private, as we said before,
- 3:46we will respect that here.
- 3:47And before we get into talking points, what I would like our audience,
- 3:52now your audience, to know more a little bit about Emmy, the person.
- 3:57Is there anything you'd like to just start off with?
- 3:59Well, I don't want anybody to dig into my relationship with Ben Affleck because
- 4:03we're trying to keep it quiet right now. You know, we're not.
- 4:07He just broke up with J-Lo. So I don't we don't want anybody to dig in about
- 4:11that. OK, good to know. TMZ, you're out.
- 4:14Yeah. No, TMZ, please give us privacy.
- 4:18Love it.
- 4:20One thing that, and I'm going to reiterate what you said and back up what you said. Please.
- 4:25There is a way to communicate, and I think it's lost when it comes to trans people.
- 4:33When you talk to somebody of a different race, let's say Mexican,
- 4:38Puerto Rican, and someone comes up to you and says, I don't date Puerto Ricans. Never.
- 4:47You'd be like oh well i don't like the way that you said that that's rude or
- 4:52if they say i don't and then they said the slur yeah,
- 4:56you're racist so the same applies with trans people i don't date trans women
- 5:02okay cool i don't date trans women um brother,
- 5:08i don't date i i only date real women. Okay, so I'm not real?
- 5:16So interesting. Hello. I think what we also miss is the fact that sex and gender
- 5:23are two completely different things.
- 5:26On your birth certificate, it's either male or female.
- 5:32And unfortunately, people who are born with both genitalia get lumped into one
- 5:37category depending on who the doctor is.
- 5:39But there's literally only two types of ways your birth certificate says.
- 5:48Gender is something completely different. You're not born a man.
- 5:53You're not born a woman. You're not even born a girl or boy.
- 5:56You're born male or female. That's it.
- 6:00Gender is a social construct. There's about 100 plus genders that you can identify as.
- 6:07How people don't know that, I mean, okay, if you don't know it,
- 6:11cool, let's talk about that.
- 6:13But if you resist it, you're literally going to be back there while the rest
- 6:18of the world moves forward. Yeah.
- 6:21I think, and you raise a good point. And I think that what, what a lot of people,
- 6:25myself included, well, back in the day, we are so used to what we know. Right.
- 6:32So growing up, right. Cause I, you know, I'm, I'm 48. So growing up,
- 6:35we were just always told it's your male or female. Right.
- 6:39So what I think happened is that, and please debate this back and forth with
- 6:44me, what I think happened is when you are known to hear something that's just
- 6:51one or the other, and then all of a sudden you hear.
- 6:56That there's more of it, I think the initial reaction is, well, I'm not wrong.
- 7:01That's what they said. They've always said that. So they assume,
- 7:05myself included, we assume that, well, what are you trying to do?
- 7:08You're trying to reinvent the wheel you're trying to change the way the way
- 7:12we we we know the the way that we know uh our sex is you know our gender is,
- 7:20so i guess my first question to you is i think i think what i want to go with is this,
- 7:27what you're basically implying or saying i'm implying saying is that when I was born, I was born, uh,
- 7:35you know, a male because of my quote unquote genitalia.
- 7:39And I know we're going to go in different directions here, right? Right. That.
- 7:45What you're basically saying is, is that an accurate statement or scientifically
- 7:51could it have been, you're just, this is where I get a little confused as to
- 7:55where the follow-up question would be.
- 7:56What is it, what is the difference between, you know, because when you tell,
- 8:01like, I have two little kids, you know this, right?
- 8:02So I always, they always, they're already at that age. They're like,
- 8:05you know, how do I know if I'm a boy or I'm a girl?
- 8:08And I was always taught and I'm teaching it to my kids. Well,
- 8:10you know, a little boy has a male part and a girl has a girl part.
- 8:15And that's the difference.
- 8:16And are we saying now, or is the transgender community saying that is an inaccurate response?
- 8:25Well, first off, I'm never going to tell you how to raise your kids.
- 8:28I agree. I put that out there for the record. I put that out there.
- 8:31I'm just saying. No, thank you for that. How to raise your kids.
- 8:34That's number one. Number two, think of it this way.
- 8:39Sex is what you physically are. like maybe that's not the right way sex is what
- 8:48you're assigned at birth gender is what you.
- 8:52Feel? Feel is such a loose word.
- 8:56Like, I didn't all of a sudden wake up and be like, yeah, I think I want to be trans.
- 9:02Right. Like, you know what I mean? Right, right. It's such a,
- 9:05like, I remember being four years old and like, something isn't,
- 9:09right. I want to play with the Easy Bake Oven that my cousin Lynn has.
- 9:14But why do I also want to play with G.I. Joe? But I'm going to let my cousin
- 9:18D over there, he can go outside and play with the boys. I want to play Barbies with the girls.
- 9:23Why? Oh, I just like feminine stuff. Cool. Okay, cool.
- 9:28And then, and I distinctly remember this, my friend Megan, I was 10 years old.
- 9:35My friend Megan was having a sleepover and I hung out with a group of guys and
- 9:40a group of girls. The only time we would mix in is when it was like summertime
- 9:44late at night and we would play like, it's really hide and seek, but we called it Jason.
- 9:49So you'd run around the whole neighborhood and you'd hide under bushes and stuff
- 9:54like that and if they find you tag you're it you gotta go home,
- 9:58um Megan had a sleepover with all the girls and I couldn't go and I was like well I wish I was a girl,
- 10:07And then I think I was 12. I'm not going to say his name because I'm still friends with him.
- 10:15We'll change the name. We'll change the name. Make up a name.
- 10:18I can't because I know so many people with different names. Okay.
- 10:21So you know what? We'll just use X.
- 10:25So X. So my friend X, I had to have been 12.
- 10:29We were sleeping over. I have weird like memory. Yeah. It's like really specific.
- 10:34And then like it's not. I think I was 12.
- 10:36We were sleeping downstairs in my living room I lived in an apartment with my
- 10:40mother and half brother and Santa.
- 10:44I was on the couch he made me go on the couch he's like it's your house you
- 10:46go on the couch he was on the floor my friend Adam was on the floor too those were three of us,
- 10:52and I remember oh why did I say Adam's name don't worry we'll edit that out
- 10:57no you can you can you can leave it so my friend X he like,
- 11:02looks at me and goes if you were a girl I'd date you I was like, what? You're 12.
- 11:09What do we know about dating? That's what old people do. And then I thought, wait, what?
- 11:20Was I like, I remember the four-year-old thing, and now X is saying this? That's weird.
- 11:28Maybe I'm giving off a vibe. When I was 17, I was watching Joan Rivers.
- 11:34I was so sick. Oh, my gosh. I was so sick.
- 11:38And I was watching Joan Rivers. It was like winter break.
- 11:43And I'm watching it, and all of a sudden, this beautiful woman comes on screen.
- 11:47She's tall, long hair. And I'm like, who the hell is this bitch?
- 11:53And she's like, yeah, I was in a Bond movie and I'm a model and I was in Playboy.
- 11:59I'm like, oh, she's so pretty. She's like, yeah, my name is Tula.
- 12:02And I'm like, oh, beautiful. She's like, yeah, I was born a man.
- 12:06I'm like, well, first of all, how are you born a man? Second of all, what?
- 12:11This was like the 90s. and I'm like wait you could do that you could just go
- 12:17and like change yourself no no way this is weird,
- 12:23and then I got into college and I did I worked at the library at college and
- 12:27I started to do research on the computer,
- 12:31in um we had encyclopedias and I started
- 12:35realizing yeah this is something that it's like watching those infomercials
- 12:40late late at night and you see the symptoms you're like that's me and that was
- 12:43me i was like i'm trans and so,
- 12:47i kind of put it off to the side a little didn't really like do anything with it,
- 12:53and then once i hit a certain age in my 30s i'm gonna say mm-hmm.
- 12:59I was like, you know what? Screw this. I'm going to just do it. I'm just going to do it.
- 13:06So I did it. Okay. So you got, you got, you, you explained it so much better than I've ever had.
- 13:14I talk a lot. I'm very verbose. No, no, no, no. But you explained it very well.
- 13:16But you hit a couple of key points that I want to go back on.
- 13:19Sure. So you, you, a lot of times, and I think a lot of people can agree with this.
- 13:26We always hear the stigma that, okay,
- 13:30the reason why a person decided to change is because they overheard someone
- 13:37or they're being told, you have this opportunity, you have this choice.
- 13:42It's basically being fed to us. And I think the fear is, okay,
- 13:46we're now, you know, if you don't put it out there, these people aren't going to change, right?
- 13:51So before we go to that part, let's go back to four. You're four years old.
- 13:55Right and you say why am i going to play with the easy bake oven but here's
- 13:59the thing that i can counter this with.
- 14:02When i was a kid i have two brothers a sister and i wanted to play with the
- 14:07barbies too right i did now with me it was more of i like professional wrestling
- 14:13with the fake wrestling right,
- 14:14and i loved taking the barbies and smashing them around but i loved playing
- 14:18with the barbie does they they were they were cooler,
- 14:22stuff back then i think that yeah But then I, you know, I played He-Man, I played all that.
- 14:26But so we can't assume also that just because,
- 14:31and I didn't say you did, but we can't assume that because a child or a teenager
- 14:35wants to play with a more feminine or slash male thing, like we know that the term tomboy, right?
- 14:41Which, you know, I've dated many tomboys. I think they're, it's cool.
- 14:45We can't assume that that doesn't mean that that person is going to be transgender.
- 14:50It just means that that's just their preference.
- 14:53You can have a person that's feminine and still be straight.
- 14:57Can I say it that way? Is that accurate without being disrespectful?
- 15:00Feminine yes yeah sorry no that's okay i mean like so what i'm getting at is
- 15:05in your story that's how it happened,
- 15:08in your story more like i was playing with barbie because i wanted to be barbie
- 15:13it wasn't like i was playing with barbie because i want to smash her head i
- 15:17wanted to straighten her hair and braid it and change her clothes
- 15:22and i thought god,
- 15:24and i remember i was like hmm,
- 15:27i wish i could do that i wish i had long hair right and then in.
- 15:321989 it was the year of the red that's what i call it the year of red right julia roberts in um,
- 15:40what do you call it pretty woman or steel magnum no pretty woman pretty woman
- 15:43oh yeah i remember that then it was robin lively and teen witch and then ariel
- 15:48in little mermaid i was like i want red hair right and green eyes And I want it now.
- 15:54And I couldn't get it. And you know, it's funny is that this,
- 15:57we go down the path now and I want to hit one more, one more point before I get into that one.
- 16:02You said on Joan Rivers, you saw someone who clearly stated that they were born
- 16:06a male and they were now living a life as a female, unless they made the change.
- 16:10I don't know where they were, but this is where the, this is a talking point
- 16:14that I guarantee we're going to get hammered on.
- 16:16They're going to say, you see, she saw it on TV.
- 16:20So that's what made her change. No. Okay. I saw it on TV at 17 after all these
- 16:26questions from the time of four. Right, right.
- 16:30And I didn't, I'm going to be 100%.
- 16:34I remember dressing up in one of my mother's dresses.
- 16:38Right. And I spun around and it had like, you know how skirts do that?
- 16:43And I was like, oh my God, that's so cool.
- 16:45And my mother caught me and she's like, get out of my dress.
- 16:48You're not supposed to do that. Spank me.
- 16:51And I was like oh that's weird I really like that dress right and.
- 16:58I want to say for about two years, I would sneak into her closet and wear her
- 17:03dress and her shoes when she wasn't home.
- 17:06So you clearly have... And I was like 12. Yeah, you clearly had,
- 17:12you know, you knew what direction you were going in.
- 17:15You didn't really know your words, right? But you knew something was...
- 17:18And I don't want to say the word off. You knew there was something different.
- 17:22Different. I did not know. And another thing, I did not have... Did I have a gay friend?
- 17:29I think i was the only out person that i knew,
- 17:33my whole life until i want to say college well you talk about the 90s i think
- 17:37at that time i can say safely on my end if you knew somebody you thought was
- 17:42you just didn't talk about it nope and it was weird i don't know it's weird
- 17:46to talk about that like that now,
- 17:48but it was it was just you just didn't bring it up like people knew what's crazy,
- 17:55Trans people have been in existence, if you do the research,
- 17:58since the 1800s. Well, yeah, a lot of plays, too. Like, what the hell? Yeah.
- 18:04Christine Jorgensen, she was the first really publicized trans person.
- 18:10Blonde hair, blue eyes. She served the military. Gorgeous. She had money.
- 18:15I'm pretty sure she got bottom surgery.
- 18:20And then there was another woman named Lily Erb. She had bottom surgery,
- 18:26but then she went back and had another surgery where she wanted to have kids,
- 18:30and that's what killed her. Wow. She got greedy.
- 18:34There was a very little-known black trans woman named Frances Thompson,
- 18:41who during the Memphis riots was assaulted by three white guys that were just
- 18:47looking for shelter, assaulted her, assaulted her friend Lucy.
- 18:52After the Memphis riots, Francis went to the police and said,
- 18:57these men assaulted me. And they said, you're a man in drag.
- 19:00It was an assault. And she's like, yes, it was. I'm going to take it to the
- 19:03Supreme Court. They sued her.
- 19:05And she got put in jail. Yeah. For reporting a crime.
- 19:10It's amazing. People have been around forever. But have we been out?
- 19:16Have we been public? Absolutely not. I think it's, I think people fear the unknown.
- 19:21I think people fear something different. I, and here's a great example.
- 19:26If a Martian came down tomorrow, we're going to do the same thing.
- 19:31We're going to look at the Martian and say, I don't know, you know,
- 19:35and the Martian could come down and be a duplicate of what we look like.
- 19:38And you'd still say, well, but you know, but they're a Martian.
- 19:41So I think it's the unknown. And I think what turned me into a more positive,
- 19:47outlook about everything is just talking with people, you know?
- 19:52And I think the fear that I had was the same. I'm going to use,
- 19:57I'm going to use spiritual on this.
- 19:58The same way people say, oh, he's preaching about God. He's trying to convert me.
- 20:03It's the same thing. People always say that. Well, I don't want to get too close
- 20:05because they're going to try to convert me. Right.
- 20:09But exactly. Exactly. Right. But here's the thing. You just want to live your life. That's it.
- 20:14That's it. And that's it. And I think that's where I think why this episode
- 20:19and why we started this series is the jumping point into very easily getting into an understanding.
- 20:28Of how we live.
- 20:29Yes, listen, there's no secret. You know that I'm preaching.
- 20:32You know that I live my life. I try to live my life by the Bible.
- 20:36It's not easy. I'm not going to say that.
- 20:38That, but I've never judged you since the day I met you.
- 20:41I've never questioned you, but you've been always very open allowing me to ask questions.
- 20:47But this is where I think we together can help change people's way of thinking.
- 20:53And when I say change, because I know people are going to be like, oh, here we goes.
- 20:56No, what I mean by that is here's a great example of two people that live two separate lives.
- 21:03We get along. We have a blast. We go on lives together. We have a good time.
- 21:08We laugh, we talk, we ask questions, and there's nobody here trying to force
- 21:14her to church, force me into the community.
- 21:18No, it's just two friends getting together, and we both live our own life.
- 21:25So this is where, why I said to you, you got to come on the show,
- 21:29because I think people really need to understand that. Now, nobody is telling,
- 21:34our audience at Half Faith, Let It Begin, or any audience for that matter.
- 21:37You have to agree with it.
- 21:39But you should respect it. No, no. But you do have to respect the individuals.
- 21:44That's what we're here for.
- 21:46You don't have to agree with the way Emmy lives her life, but you definitely
- 21:50have to respect her because she's a human being.
- 21:54That's it. And I'm not bothering you. No.
- 21:57You know what I mean? I and me and you, I'm not going to say we've come a long
- 22:03way because we haven't come a long way.
- 22:05But when we first met, I was like, who is this guy?
- 22:10It's the first time you've said that to me Because I don't I'm weary about strangers
- 22:15You know this now I'm just like who is this girl And then the more and more
- 22:19we talked And we're in live together I was like I love him.
- 22:25I really love him We have fun And now it's like That's just pastor.
- 22:33That's it And we have a great time And you know you've asked me many questions,
- 22:38and i've given you the most honest answers i can that to my knowledge and if
- 22:41i don't know something i gotta i gotta go to the source or if i can't speak
- 22:46to it i'll say listen i gotta i gotta get back to you because i don't know,
- 22:49right so this is why i'm gonna like because we this is only part one we got
- 22:52many parts to go right wait what,
- 22:55surprise we got many parts to go so you know before we i think we've we've touched
- 23:00on a good amount to get everybody's feet wet but this is why I want to kind
- 23:05of give everybody a teaser where I want to go next.
- 23:09And this is on both parts, spiritual and the transgender community.
- 23:16There's always a bad apple. Yes. And I think what bothers me from my perspective,
- 23:26if I go in, like I've gone into a live when somebody's clearly,
- 23:31there's a girl that's on our live on TikTok.
- 23:33Her name is emily i was just flipping through and i see this girl,
- 23:38didn't know she was trans transgender but i just see a girl,
- 23:41you know tomo right emily yeah so she was getting yes she was getting trashed
- 23:46from somebody that clearly stated that they were christian and they kept bashing
- 23:51her and it was offensive to me because you can't speak for all christianity,
- 23:57so i jumped in the live and i defended her not knowing she was transgender they
- 24:01were i thought they were just trashing her And then when I found out,
- 24:04they thought I was going to flip.
- 24:05And I said, no, it just, that's a human being. It's a person.
- 24:10And for anyone to use scripture, and we all interpret scripture differently.
- 24:17And I understand there's many scriptures that say you shouldn't do this and
- 24:21you shouldn't do that. We're not going to go down that path.
- 24:23But we know on my end there is.
- 24:26But it also states you have to love your neighbor as you love yourself.
- 24:31So you can't do one and not the other. And that's why I jumped in live. And for me, it's like.
- 24:39But God is the only person that can judge anybody on this planet.
- 24:43What are you thinking? Are you saying that you're God because you're judging me? Right.
- 24:48I don't like that. Right. You're not God. Don't judge me. Mind your business.
- 24:52Pay your own bills. I got my bills. I'm paying them. You want to pay my bills.
- 24:57Caller number one. We're going to take callers up to this. No.
- 25:03Me and Ben. Me and Ben. Remember. Yeah. But, you know, listen,
- 25:09this is I think it's a great way to start our series. And, you know, Emmy will be back.
- 25:13We're not going to stop. We're going to keep doing this because we want the
- 25:17open lines of communication to be a part.
- 25:21So for me, we're going to that section will be eventually called faith and listening,
- 25:26you know, because for me, my faith has to shape how I treat the person in front of me.
- 25:31And it asks something of me in my everyday actions, in my words,
- 25:35in my patience, and my willingness to listen.
- 25:38Now, do I know that there will be people that will probably be,
- 25:42defriend me or unfriend me or whatever that is, or judge me for having you on? That is okay.
- 25:48Because everybody has a right to change the channel and that does not offend
- 25:52me. And everybody wants to say what they want to say to Emmy for maybe even speaking with me.
- 25:59You know it is what it is so look I just want to say this as my final word to
- 26:04you so before we close I want to give you the last word on your story is there
- 26:09anything that I haven't asked you so far on part one
- 26:12that you want people to hear and what,
- 26:15would you say to someone who feels judged before they had a chance to be known.
- 26:25I just want people to know if you have a trans person in your life,
- 26:30get to know them as a person first and then trans later.
- 26:34Oh, that's a good one. Because I'm a whole human being. When we go live,
- 26:40how many times do I mention that I'm trans? Yeah. How many?
- 26:44Angel. It's the other people mention it more than I do. Yeah,
- 26:48you don't bring it up. The only time it ever came up is when we're talking about
- 26:50nostalgia and I brought up Transformers and that was a bad thing.
- 26:55That's an inside joke. And we'll have to bring that up at another time.
- 26:59Anyway, that's an inside joke. But no, yes, you don't bring it up.
- 27:01It's a total inside joke. Yes.
- 27:03You don't bring it up. I think that's what happens.
- 27:06I think, and you brought up a great point. I want to talk about that later in another episode.
- 27:10I think that there are people that are just uncomfortable with it being in their
- 27:14side, feel like it's being thrown down their throat.
- 27:17When in reality, we just want to live our life. I think all of us just want to live our life.
- 27:22And that's it. And that's it. Well, look, I mean, I adore you.
- 27:27I love you. And I thank you for sharing your time, your perspective,
- 27:31and what you felt comfortable sharing of your life. We're just getting started.
- 27:34So I appreciate your willingness to have this conversation with me.
- 27:38Now, to everyone listening, I began this episode by acknowledging an attitude that I once held.
- 27:44I share that because I know how much we can miss when we turn away from people
- 27:50before we've heard them.
- 27:52My hope for this series is that we'll keep making room to listen,
- 27:57to ask thoughtful questions, and to examine our own hearts.
- 28:01Here's your one more step for
- 28:04today. When you notice yourself making an assumption about someone, pause.
- 28:10Give yourself a chance to hear their story because their story may just surprise you.
- 28:17On behalf of all of us here at Have Faith, Let It Begin, on behalf of Emmy, we say thank you.
- 28:22Real people, real stories, and sometimes we even deal with a little bit of our faith.
- 28:28And for now, we're just getting started.
- 28:32So keep listening, keep communicating, and never forget, Have Faith, Let It Begin.
- 28:38Have faith.
- 28:44Let it.
