- 0:56You're already taking the first step. just by
- 1:00joining us here today. Why I want you to be financially
- 1:04free, getting into kind of the why, is to me,
- 1:08first of all, I think the American dream has
- 1:10shifted a little bit and not in a positive way.
- 1:14The American dream, what it has been, is you're
- 1:18able to come to America, people have migrated
- 1:21to America, to be able to create whatever lifestyle
- 1:24they want. for themselves because they're able
- 1:28to start a business, they're able to work hard,
- 1:32whatever it is. And you see success stories all
- 1:34the time of how someone's, I don't know, first
- 1:37generation who moved over here worked hard and
- 1:40gave their children the opportunity to maybe
- 1:45start a business, things like that. And then
- 1:46they've grown to whatever their American dream
- 1:49is now. But the American dream, excuse me, the
- 1:52American dream was to be able to build. basically
- 1:54centered around you can build whatever lifestyle
- 1:56you want for yourself. And to me, you know, I'm
- 2:00with a lot of millennials, Gen Z, I am a millennial,
- 2:03and I'm around a lot of Gen Z people, young people.
- 2:07And I think what the American dream has shifted
- 2:08to is not how can I build something for myself,
- 2:11but how can other people take care of me? And
- 2:14to me, there's so much more that you can do.
- 2:20I know that the more financially I guess, literate,
- 2:23the sharper my money vision became, the more
- 2:26I was able to see these opportunities that the
- 2:28wealthy were seeing. And so one of the reasons
- 2:31why I want people to be able to be financially
- 2:33literate and ultimately financially free is because
- 2:37I think it's empowering when you're financially
- 2:39literate. Because now you can start to see the
- 2:43opportunities the way that wealthy do. when you're
- 2:46not financially literate and you're kind of held
- 2:49down by whatever the circumstance is, it's really
- 2:53hard to see a way out. But the more financially
- 2:57literate someone gets, I think the more empowered
- 3:00you feel. And so that's one reason I want you
- 3:02to be financially literate and financially free.
- 3:05And the other, ultimately, is I think when you
- 3:07have people that are financially free, you have
- 3:09better philanthropists, you have better families,
- 3:11you have better fathers, you have better wives,
- 3:13because you're more free in the two currencies.
- 3:16There's two currencies. One is money that we
- 3:18know about, but the second is time. You treat
- 3:20time the same as the currency of money. You spend
- 3:22it, you invest it, and financially free people
- 3:26have both of those currencies. You have more
- 3:29money, you have more time, so you can invest
- 3:31more money into whatever philanthropist things
- 3:36you want to do, or more time into people. and
- 3:39the more time may actually be more important
- 3:42because it's something that you can't get it
- 3:44back. And so those are the two reasons why I
- 3:47want you to be financially free. Actually, here's
- 3:49a little clip. I'll shut up for a second. And
- 3:52here's a little clip from Alex Camino in our
- 3:54podcast. I think it's episode 55 if you want
- 3:56to listen to MoneyVisionU. But he talks about
- 3:58kind of the pay now, play later concept. Which
- 4:01by the way, you said you're still living in your
- 4:03garage. Is that what you said? Yeah, man, I'm
- 4:06in it now. So yeah, so still house hacking and
- 4:09you're making, I mean, you're financially free
- 4:11making 10 grand a month is what you're saying.
- 4:14Yeah, yeah, yeah. So it's it's. It's nice, man.
- 4:18And I'm obviously this is like, I'm not saying
- 4:20like, you know, I'm going to be here forever.
- 4:22I'm probably going to move out of here within
- 4:23a year into probably, you know, a new city, get
- 4:26the nice apartment, get a new car, all that kind
- 4:28of stuff. But I understand his levels to it.
- 4:30Like in order for me to get here, I had to do
- 4:33this. I had to delay gratification. Most people
- 4:36that graduate college with, you know, the salary
- 4:38I had all that they're going to get that new
- 4:40BMW. They're going to get the nice apartment,
- 4:42which I got the nice apartment too, but. When
- 4:44I woke up, I realized this is what I need to
- 4:46do. But the car, people are going to try to buy
- 4:49that dream house as soon as they can. Come on,
- 4:52man. It's delayed gratification is the most important
- 4:55thing along this journey to financial freedom.
- 4:58The most important thing. Love that clip. Dude's
- 5:02a stud. And remember, this is the dude that's
- 5:04making, technically now he's grossing $50 ,000
- 5:07a month. So it's probably more like a net cash
- 5:09flow. Call it $10 ,000 a month. But what do people
- 5:12do with that often? Move on to the next thing
- 5:15they buy the next thing but this dude still house
- 5:17hacking living in his garage Because he's just
- 5:21trying to delay that gratification So he can
- 5:23have more more assets build up his asset column
- 5:27to be even bigger to pay for all the liabilities
- 5:30that he wants and so I love that clip love that
- 5:32mindset because it really I'm gonna talk which
- 5:35by the way You said you're still living in your
- 5:37garage Oops, user error. I think too, like it's
- 5:40important to differentiate between not delayed
- 5:43gratification to your 60. It's delayed gratification
- 5:47long enough to build up some savings so that
- 5:50you can start getting some passive income. Because
- 5:53once you start getting passive income, now you've
- 5:55got extra passive income to create more passive
- 5:57income. Yeah. And it kind of just snowballs after
- 6:01that. And you start to learn the game. and you
- 6:06just see more opportunities than you did at the
- 6:08start. So there's momentum on that education
- 6:10side as well. And so I wanted to show that clip
- 6:13too, because I'm going to talk about three steps
- 6:16and kind of setting yourself up for financial
- 6:18success, but it really does all start with mindset.
- 6:22And I hate being cliche saying that's like a
- 6:24number one step because I'm a really practical
- 6:26dude. I'm an enneagram type one. If anyone knows
- 6:30the enneagram test, but it really does all start
- 6:34with mindset. Like I said at the intro of being
- 6:38consistent, doing gratification, knowing your
- 6:41goals, and just taking steps towards those every
- 6:44day. But let's talk about really the three steps
- 6:47that I see. And this is from countless, you know,
- 6:52I've got a podcast, I do a lot of networking.
- 6:54And when I ask people what their, you know, they
- 6:58think are most important or what they would advise
- 7:00to people starting out on their financial freedom
- 7:02journey. It's these three things. It comes down
- 7:04to these three things outside of kind of the
- 7:06mindset. So the first one is to invest in your
- 7:09financial literacy. You know, a lot of people
- 7:11want to get rich quick, whether it's hit the
- 7:14lottery, being in the right crypto, you know,
- 7:18whatever crypto is going to the moon, things
- 7:20like that, NFTs, et cetera. Not that any of those
- 7:24things are bad, but a lot of people I think are
- 7:27that that's not pursuing your financial literacy.
- 7:29That's more gambling, not investing. Just because,
- 7:33I'll say this, just because you invest in the
- 7:35stock market doesn't mean you're investing. You
- 7:38could be gambling if you don't know anything
- 7:40and you're just hoping to get lucky. A lot of
- 7:42people have done with crypto and it's burned
- 7:45them. They found out quickly that there's ups
- 7:48and downs in the market and in crypto, it is
- 7:50more volatile than really any of the other asset
- 7:53classes. And so that's more gambling than investing.
- 7:57And so even still, though, many people may have
- 8:02heard of the ESPN documentary called Broke, where
- 8:05it's about athletes who make a lot of money and
- 8:07then lose the money. Or you've heard of lottery
- 8:10winners who win the lottery and then they go
- 8:13bankrupt. See what happens. They don't have the
- 8:17financial literacy to be able to sustain that
- 8:21wealth. And when you're financially literate,
- 8:25you understand how to make manage and multiply
- 8:28money. When you're not financially literate you
- 8:31just hope to get rich quick and then say you
- 8:34have 10 million dollars it ends up not being
- 8:37invested into assets properly whatever it is
- 8:40and it's gone and we've seen that plenty of times
- 8:43from lottery winners and unfortunately athletes
- 8:46or not even athletes trust fund kids whatever
- 8:52it is people that you know maybe their parents
- 8:54had a lot of money They didn't have it and they
- 8:56lose it all. They spend it all. They go broke.
- 8:59And so got to invest in your financial literacy.
- 9:03I'm going to skip this clip actually, but that's
- 9:06a good episode. Tell someone what the difference
- 9:08is between that's a good episode. He's a MMA
- 9:13financial coach. So, and he actually spent like
- 9:17two years. playing blackjack and counting cards.
- 9:21And so he talks about the difference in investing
- 9:24in gambling and how to not get caught. Oh, holy
- 9:29night. But that's a fun episode for sure. But
- 9:34anyways, I'm a Dallas Mavericks fan, by the way.
- 9:39I was born in Dallas, Texas. So I don't know
- 9:42if you knew that angel, but it was big Dallas
- 9:44Cowboys or I am a big Dallas Cowboys, Dallas
- 9:46Mavericks. fan, yada, yada, yada, but I love
- 9:50Mark Cuban and he's always cracking me up. But
- 9:52I bring up this slide to say financially literate
- 9:55people can create wealth over and over again.
- 9:57So if you stripped Mark Cuban, for example, of
- 9:59all of his wealth and all of his connections,
- 10:03but he was able to keep his financial literacy,
- 10:07he would be able to be back where he was very
- 10:11quickly in a year or two years, whatever it is.
- 10:14He'd be able to find ways to start businesses,
- 10:18make the right connections, grow a business,
- 10:20and be back to where he was. Why? Because he
- 10:23is financially literate. And I know a lot of
- 10:26people may get frustrated with this, but if you
- 10:30took all of the money in the world, however many
- 10:32trillions of dollars it is, and divided it among
- 10:35the billions of people that we have, equally.
- 10:37Let's say everybody had a million dollars. I
- 10:40don't know how much it would be. Zero idea of
- 10:42the math there. But let's say everyone had a
- 10:44million dollars. What would probably happen is
- 10:48the people that didn't have financial literacy
- 10:50would fall to the bottom, and the people that
- 10:52had financial literacy would rise to the top.
- 10:55Because it's not the money that you have in your
- 10:57bank account, it's the knowledge that you have
- 10:59in your brain that brings you to wealth. And
- 11:03so that's why I think the first step of investing
- 11:07in your own financial literacy is so important.
- 11:10And here's kind of an extension. This is real
- 11:15financial literacy 101 stuff right here. Financial
- 11:17literacy also helps you align your investing
- 11:19with your goals. Whenever I'm with a lot of young
- 11:24people and whenever they ask me, oh, what should
- 11:26I invest in first? My first question is always,
- 11:29what are your goals? That's my first question
- 11:31always. Do you want cash flow? Do you want stability?
- 11:35Like, what are you going for? And so there's
- 11:37five different asset classes, business, real
- 11:39estate, commodities, paper assets, and crypto.
- 11:42and each one of them have pros and cons, and
- 11:46certain ones of them are more for certain stages,
- 11:49maybe in your financial freedom career. For me,
- 11:51I'm not investing in commodities. That's more
- 11:54of a hedge against inflation and something that
- 11:56is really like insurance for my wealth. It's
- 11:59to protect my wealth. I want cash flow. If you
- 12:02want financial freedom, well, to get that income,
- 12:06that cash flow, you need to be invested in something
- 12:10like businesses, maybe you start your own business
- 12:13or there's ways to invest in businesses as well
- 12:16to where you get dividends from that or real
- 12:19estate. Those are the two asset classes that
- 12:21I'm in. You can get dividends from paper assets
- 12:23like you invest in Coca Cola or Apple and you
- 12:27know, they pay dividends, but it's very small.
- 12:28You got to have a very large chunk of change
- 12:30to be able to get the right amount of dividends.
- 12:32So for me, I'm heavy in business and real estate
- 12:36because I need cash flow. So those are the five
- 12:39different asset classes that people say there
- 12:43are but I like to put an asterisk by that because
- 12:46to me there's a sixth education class or sixth
- 12:50asset class and that is education because remember
- 12:52what's the definition of an asset? An asset is
- 12:55anything that you invest in that puts money into
- 12:58your pocket. Well by that definition education
- 13:02into your financial literacy falls into an asset
- 13:07class or the definition of an asset. The only
- 13:09difference is to invest in your education, now
- 13:13it can cost money, you can invest in mentors
- 13:15and things like that, but most often when you
- 13:17are investing in your education, the cost isn't
- 13:19money, but the cost is time. And remember there's
- 13:22two currencies, money and time, and you can invest
- 13:25either one, but some people may have more time
- 13:29than money right now, and so you know especially
- 13:32if it's maybe a younger crowd, maybe you don't
- 13:34have a family or something right now, maybe you're
- 13:36single. I don't know what different people's
- 13:39stages of life are, but you got to invest in
- 13:43that sixth asset class because it's free. You
- 13:47can go to YouTube, you can go listen to podcasts,
- 13:50you can read books, and you are investing The
- 13:53only difference is you don't see money come in
- 13:55immediately. Well, if you invest in businesses
- 13:58as real estate, you're probably not seeing money
- 13:59come in immediately either. Maybe you do if you
- 14:02buy it really right. But it often takes time
- 14:05regardless. So I like to always define that there's
- 14:08a sixth asset class going by the definition of
- 14:11asset. And that's something that everyone can
- 14:13invest in because you can find time, whether
- 14:16it's working out every time. Every morning I
- 14:20work out and I listen to three hours of podcasts.
- 14:23I don't work out for three hours. I put them
- 14:25on 2x speed. And so it goes bam, bam, bam, but
- 14:27I'm getting the concept. I'm learning every single
- 14:30day. I'm growing. I just basically got so hungry
- 14:33that I stopped listening to listening to music.
- 14:35And I just listened to financial podcasts and
- 14:38a little fantasy football podcast. That's kind
- 14:40of my, my two, my two things, but I talked about
- 14:45what's your goal from investing. You got to be
- 14:46able to align your investing with your goals,
- 14:49understand your goal, where you want to be, and
- 14:52align your investing with that. And financial
- 14:55literacy shows you how to do that. That's why
- 14:57I think it's the number one step in aligning
- 15:01investing with goals. And here's another clip
- 15:03from Alex. Let me play this one. More gems dropped
- 15:07from Alex here. The reasoning behind things,
- 15:10because like you said, people will tell you give
- 15:13your money to a financial advisor put money in
- 15:14a 401k well why i never put a dollar in my 401k
- 15:19and my literally the hr lady she was like are
- 15:21you sure you want two dollars like yes i don't
- 15:24want to put a dollar in my 401k i need that money
- 15:26because i know because here's the thing it's
- 15:28like why am i gonna and look if people that's
- 15:31listening you have a 401k i know most people
- 15:33have a 401k it's cool it's totally fine but for
- 15:35me it was like I know I'm not going to be working
- 15:37until I'm 65. Why am I going to lock up my money
- 15:40in an investment thing I can't touch for the
- 15:42next 40 years? I'm not going to lock my money
- 15:44up there when I can go put it in something like
- 15:46real estate or business and immediately get the
- 15:49RRI from that money. And so to me, it just didn't
- 15:52make sense. And like you said, financial literacy
- 15:54aligning your investment goes with your knowledge.
- 15:58And so for me, my goal is freedom. So I'm not
- 16:00going to put my money in a place that doesn't
- 16:02lead to freedom. And let me say time out, time
- 16:07out right here, because I know that clip could
- 16:09be offensive almost, because everyone's heard
- 16:11you're almost naturally taught to put your money
- 16:13in a 401k. I'm not saying that's wrong at all.
- 16:16That may be the complete right move for you to
- 16:19do. The whole point here is aligning your investing
- 16:23with your goals. This dude, Alex, he was hungry
- 16:26for financial freedom. He wanted financial freedom
- 16:28by the time he was 30. So naturally he was like,
- 16:32why should I tie my money up till I'm 60? So
- 16:34he figured out how to align his investing with
- 16:37his goals. And as funny as HR director was like,
- 16:39you sure you really want to do that? Like, what
- 16:41are you doing not investing into your 401k? You
- 16:42know, we're going to do 100 % match and things
- 16:45like that. And I'm not against 401k, I'm not
- 16:48against IRM, I'm not against any of those things.
- 16:50Right now, my purpose is simply saying align
- 16:53your investing with your goals. And that's why
- 16:55Alex decided not to go into 401k. and he was
- 16:58hungry. He figured it out. Now he's financially
- 17:00free at 25 years old, but he probably wouldn't
- 17:03have got to that place of where he wanted to
- 17:04be if he was maxing out his 401k. But again,
- 17:09that wasn't his goal of stability, really passive,
- 17:14not have to worry about it, completely enjoy
- 17:16your job. You're not going to go anywhere. That's
- 17:18a different goal than what Alex had. So I wanted
- 17:21to clarify that because that can almost sound
- 17:24offensive because it's so backwards. you
