- 0:01Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald is our Broncos insider Altitude Sports Radio ninety
- 0:05Speaker 1: two five pro football, the insider I've covered while Chef Legwall.
- 0:10Speaker 1: His appearances are always must listen radio. We learn a lot,
- 0:13Speaker 1: brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Start with a job and for the career IBW Local
- 0:20Speaker 2: sixty eight.
- 0:21Speaker 1: It's Leggy, wef ye ye.
- 0:24Speaker 2: On Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Jeff Legwell. Time here on a Friday afternoon, Jeff Legwald,
- 0:34Speaker 1: brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
- 0:37Speaker 1: IBW Local sixty eight. You start with a job and
- 0:41Speaker 1: you wrap it up with a career. Uh all right, Leggy,
- 0:46Speaker 1: it is the year of our Lord twenty twenty five, okay,
- 0:50Speaker 1: meaning and I'm sure you can do this this exercise
- 0:53Speaker 1: yourself at ESPN dot com. It's time to start naming
- 0:57Speaker 1: the quarter century team. We've got a twenty five year
- 1:02Speaker 1: sample size to now work off of which is quite substantial.
- 1:08Speaker 1: And so I just, you know, today started scribbling down
- 1:13Speaker 1: what a what an all quarter century Broncos offense would
- 1:18Speaker 1: look like. And these are the names that I wrote down.
- 1:22Speaker 1: And again, you know, I'm using Pro Football Reference and
- 1:25Speaker 1: just looking up numbers and again longevity and you know
- 1:28Speaker 1: what did you compile? Obviously there were individual seasons of
- 1:31Speaker 1: brilliance in there. How do you weigh that against career
- 1:34Speaker 1: accomplishments and all of that. Starting a quarterback, it's Peyton
- 1:40Speaker 1: Manning and it's over. I don't there's nobody else, there's
- 1:44Speaker 1: not even to me. C. J.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Cutler, Jake Plumber, Driscoll, Jake driscoll. Yeah, let me keep going. Okay,
- 1:52Speaker 2: So then we had Orton right, Leggy, we had a
- 1:54Speaker 2: year at t BO, Brady Quinn never got his shot.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Maning shows up. Then we went to the Trivers Simeon thing.
- 2:02Speaker 3: It'd be Plumber as the backup with Peyton as the starter.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Yes, there you go. Yeah, it is basically it and
- 2:08Speaker 1: it's and it's man, it's all in four years, but
- 2:10Speaker 1: it's it's well, it's honestly like you put up. You
- 2:15Speaker 1: put up that four year stretch next to ninety five
- 2:18Speaker 1: to ninety eight, and those are the two greatest four
- 2:20Speaker 1: year stretches in Bronco history. All right, let's let's go
- 2:24Speaker 1: to to the backfield. Okay. What's funny about this is
- 2:30Speaker 1: like they in this quarter century, there has not been
- 2:32Speaker 1: a Terrell Davis like figure. You got a name, but
- 2:37Speaker 1: it's that Honestly, the two names that I came up
- 2:40Speaker 1: with are underwhelming. All right, give to me no, Sean
- 2:45Speaker 1: Moreno and Mike Anderson.
- 2:46Speaker 2: No, I'd go Clinton Portis.
- 2:49Speaker 1: It was a very short tan. It's a high peak,
- 2:52Speaker 1: but very short tenures.
- 2:54Speaker 2: That dude when he got going was so fun, so fun. Yeah,
- 2:58Speaker 2: am I wrong? Jeff is unfair? Let's let's start to describe.
- 3:02Speaker 3: What do you got? You got back to back fifteen
- 3:05Speaker 3: hundred yard seasons basically, right, and that's in uh. But
- 3:10Speaker 3: you know, his Bronco tenure didn't end, you know, by
- 3:13Speaker 3: injury or voluntary. I mean, he was traded for Champ Bailey,
- 3:17Speaker 3: so and he wanted a.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Little bit of money that I think Mike was annoyed
- 3:20Speaker 2: by it, but you know, and then Mike went and
- 3:23Speaker 2: coached him in Washington and all is weird. But but
- 3:25Speaker 2: I'm thinking, yeah.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Is he still in the clink right now? By the way, yes, wow, Yeah,
- 3:31Speaker 1: I'm not sure. I'm not saying that that. By the way,
- 3:33Speaker 1: I'm not saying that disqualifies him. Okay, O. J. Simpson
- 3:37Speaker 1: is still in the Hall of Fame.
- 3:39Speaker 3: I'd say C. J. Anderson was undervalued, uh player, he had.
- 3:45Speaker 2: A good run and they won a super Bowl with him.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, I'd say he's right there in the conversation.
- 3:49Speaker 1: You know, you get into your then then you start
- 3:51Speaker 1: getting into your Javante's, your Melvin Gordon's.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Uh yeah, there's a lot of one and done in there. Yeah,
- 3:58Speaker 3: you know a lot of years where there's the you know,
- 4:00Speaker 3: or one or two and done. And I think that position.
- 4:03Speaker 1: They didn't get like like any continuity out of it.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Like I think Andy's right about like Portis's peak is
- 4:09Speaker 1: the highest. It just burned bright and then But maybe
- 4:14Speaker 1: to your point, Leggy, like, maybe that's it. Should he
- 4:16Speaker 1: should get points for having helped you acquire Champ Bailey.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Yeah, it's uh. I think that's a pretty good thing too.
- 4:24Speaker 3: That would be my quirky, you know, if I was
- 4:26Speaker 3: write in that story, that would be my Okay, let's
- 4:29Speaker 3: don't forget that he brought Champ Bailey a hall of favor?
- 4:34Speaker 2: Would Tatum Bell get any mention? I only remember Tatum
- 4:37Speaker 2: mainly because he was the guy that came in the trade.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Not only did the Broncos get Bailey, they got Tatum
- 4:42Speaker 2: and Tatum for a couple of seasons. Look like maybe
- 4:45Speaker 2: he'd be the Portois replacement because he had the same speed, right, Jeff,
- 4:49Speaker 2: but not nearly as electric as Portois was.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Now again, I think the position, you could probably pick
- 4:57Speaker 3: five guys who have the same sort of resume.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, so I think, okay, so I'll go, I'll
- 5:03Speaker 1: go Portis, Mike Anderson.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Sure, I got no problem with that. Somewhere one rookie
- 5:08Speaker 2: of the year, right, offensive rookie of the year, Jeff,
- 5:10Speaker 2: he was really good. Here's where i'll you know what,
- 5:13Speaker 2: I'll say something I never said on the air before.
- 5:17Speaker 2: And Stink told me this, and so naturally I kind
- 5:19Speaker 2: of tend to listen to the guy that blocked for
- 5:21Speaker 2: these dudes. My problem sometimes with Mike Anderson, and it's
- 5:24Speaker 2: probably not fair, but Jeff, you tell me if you
- 5:26Speaker 2: remember this too. Stink said, here's my thing with Mike Anderson.
- 5:30Speaker 2: If we'd have given TD the tds the holes Mike
- 5:33Speaker 2: Anderson got TD dad three thousand.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Yeah, but to be like, this guy's not as good
- 5:38Speaker 1: as Terrell Davis.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I know, I know, I know, but you know, yeah,
- 5:42Speaker 2: I don't think I'll just be talking about it all
- 5:44Speaker 2: the time. I'm not sure Portis was getting those kind
- 5:46Speaker 2: of holes. How about that.
- 5:47Speaker 1: I would probably agree with that wide receiver. And I
- 5:52Speaker 1: only wrote down two act You can extend it to three.
- 5:55Speaker 1: But it's it's DT and Rod.
- 5:58Speaker 3: No, no, and the conversation.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:01Speaker 3: And I don't care how many years there are whatever.
- 6:05Speaker 2: If you win slock GUYE Jeff, who would you go?
- 6:08Speaker 2: Welker Stokely? Who do we be talking about?
- 6:11Speaker 3: I mean, Welker, it's a short tenured Stokely too, But
- 6:14Speaker 3: Welker was in the brightest of the bright you know period.
- 6:19Speaker 1: That's a twenty thirteen Bronco right there.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Yeah, he's a anybody on the twenty thirteen Broncos is
- 6:25Speaker 3: in the conversation because that that record is undervalued locally.
- 6:30Speaker 3: I think as to what it took, and I think
- 6:34Speaker 3: it will stand. I think it will stand a little
- 6:36Speaker 3: bit of test of time. It's already shown how tough
- 6:39Speaker 3: it is.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Okay, so let's for the moment, for the sake of discussion,
- 6:42Speaker 1: let's not worry about where you're lining up. If we
- 6:45Speaker 1: were going to extend this to a third receiver, I'll
- 6:48Speaker 1: give you candidates. I'll give you I'll give you Courtland Sutton,
- 6:51Speaker 1: I'll give you em Manual Sanders. Yeah, I will give
- 6:56Speaker 1: you Brandon Marshall.
- 6:58Speaker 2: I gotta go Emmanuel Sanders. I think, okay, Marshall was
- 7:01Speaker 2: pretty good here, Gosh, Nate, you're bringing up.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Some good names that position a lot better over that
- 7:07Speaker 3: period than running back. I mean, Brandon Marshall had one
- 7:10Speaker 3: hundred catch season and for a bad team. And a
- 7:14Speaker 3: single game did he have a twenty two catch game?
- 7:16Speaker 1: He did one of the worst against Indianapolis in football. Uh.
- 7:21Speaker 1: I think Gary Deer would like to spot in this conversation.
- 7:26Speaker 3: I think if Courtland played in the environment Emmanual did,
- 7:29Speaker 3: the numbers would have been pretty good.
- 7:31Speaker 2: But that's just me, all right, Well, boy, that one
- 7:35Speaker 2: will probably be the most hotly debated one. Yeah, threeoh three, five,
- 7:38Speaker 2: four oh nine, two five if you want to, if
- 7:40Speaker 2: you want to go.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Ahead, Courtland absolutely the red zone stud.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Yeah, there's no doubt about it. But I don't even
- 7:46Speaker 2: I don't want to underestimate what what Emmanuel did too,
- 7:48Speaker 2: because I just remember Manual making so many big catches. Now, Jeff,
- 7:53Speaker 2: I always remember your line. As soon as DT got traded,
- 7:56Speaker 2: We'll see how it goes with the manual having to
- 7:57Speaker 2: deal with the number one corner now, and it did
- 7:59Speaker 2: not go as well after DT left. But Emmanuel was
- 8:03Speaker 2: absolute poison for the second corner when he was playing
- 8:05Speaker 2: with DT.
- 8:07Speaker 3: Andy. I think it was more a revelation of how
- 8:10Speaker 3: good DT was, right.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, me yeah, tight end.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Julius Thomas. Julius Thomas, well Shark played a little bit
- 8:21Speaker 2: though Sharp played into the two thousands, right back to back.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Twelve TV seasons. That's pretty good.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I would say that the productivity, I'd probably
- 8:32Speaker 1: go with Julius Thomas right there, and I mean your
- 8:35Speaker 1: other you start getting into the no disrespect that Tony
- 8:38Speaker 1: Scheffler is the no offense of the world.
- 8:42Speaker 3: There's no you're okay not a good run?
- 8:45Speaker 1: No, yeah, thank you. Yeah, they've they've really struggled on that.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Okay, wait to Brandon Lloyd a tree. Randon Lloyd was
- 8:52Speaker 2: a pretty good receiver, dude, that catch the football. You
- 8:55Speaker 2: got a nice grin the Illinois grad.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Yeah, it's my dude.
- 9:00Speaker 3: I'll always remember his I think he made the Pro
- 9:03Speaker 3: Bowl or something happened. We had a teleconference with him.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Comeback Player of the Year.
- 9:07Speaker 2: I think that's what it was. Yeah, what's funny.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Is he was here with both years of McDaniels. The
- 9:15Speaker 1: second year was the Pro Bowl year. The first year
- 9:19Speaker 1: he was inactive. Yeah, like for like twelve game, like,
- 9:22Speaker 1: Josh damn play him. Josh hated the guy. Yeah, And
- 9:27Speaker 1: so I gotta I gotta say to Brandon Lloyd not
- 9:30Speaker 1: a big fan of Josh. No, you let.
- 9:32Speaker 3: That, by the way, that's a very long lift.
- 9:38Speaker 2: The where they rank and Hateaniels the most. Peyton Hillis
- 9:45Speaker 2: wants a word. I one time saw we played your boy.
- 9:49Speaker 2: BK found a way to get Brandon Lloyd to come
- 9:51Speaker 2: play mediate league.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Softball and he was awesome.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Homeboy was dude. Lloyd was like by the outfield fence
- 9:59Speaker 2: and laying inside that little minimum stand line to make
- 10:03Speaker 2: it catch one time and I couldn't believe it. Yeah,
- 10:05Speaker 2: and I mean caught it like as it was going
- 10:07Speaker 2: to hit the blade of grass.
- 10:09Speaker 1: It was unreal, elite.
- 10:10Speaker 2: It was like, yeah, none of us are like that. No,
- 10:12Speaker 2: that's why we're covering sports and you're playing it.
- 10:15Speaker 1: They're built different. Okay, all right, so we're going with
- 10:17Speaker 1: Julius to tight end all right. Offensive line center is
- 10:24Speaker 1: Naylan No brainer guards. I wrote down Chris Cooper and
- 10:29Speaker 1: Ben Hamilton.
- 10:31Speaker 3: That my two picks.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Okay, over Lewis Vasquez.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I just over the long haul. Basquez had a
- 10:39Speaker 3: really good two year run and then his his back
- 10:42Speaker 3: really started hacking up minors.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Will I think he'll be in the century conversation. But yeah,
- 10:49Speaker 1: those the two names.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Cooper another vastly underrated player.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Chris Cooper was so tough time.
- 10:56Speaker 1: He was so good, phenomenal play. He was like a
- 10:59Speaker 1: sixth rounder too, wasn't he.
- 11:00Speaker 3: If they don't, if they don't screw up his surgery,
- 11:03Speaker 3: if care better.
- 11:04Speaker 1: But yeah, we discussed that. By the way, Jeff the
- 11:07Speaker 1: it was the seven to three Orton led Chiefs over
- 11:10Speaker 1: the t bow led Broncos game. Uh, when Cooper had
- 11:14Speaker 1: his ankle basically ripped in, I mean like his foot
- 11:18Speaker 1: was screwed down the wrong way.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I I I learned quickly on the sidelines that
- 11:23Speaker 2: if players scatter like someone just dropped the firecracker, you
- 11:27Speaker 2: know something bad just happened. It's not good when the
- 11:30Speaker 2: pile clears after a tackle like that. Who you got
- 11:33Speaker 2: for tackles?
- 11:33Speaker 1: Okay, So I wrote down three names, and you guys Lady,
- 11:38Speaker 1: so I wrote, I wrote down Clady, Bulls, and Lepsis.
- 11:41Speaker 1: I wrote down Matt Lepsis as well, those are three left.
- 11:45Speaker 1: I mean, just let's not worry about they're right. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 11:50Speaker 1: I do.
- 11:51Speaker 3: I do Clady balls and then uh, George Foster at
- 11:55Speaker 3: right tackle.
- 11:56Speaker 1: If we're doing left right, okay, if you're going left right,
- 11:58Speaker 1: you'd put him over there.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Clady Clady hands down. Man. I'm telling you, I've never
- 12:02Speaker 2: heard Mike Sheney in the day they drafted Jeff, tell
- 12:05Speaker 2: me how rare this was. Mike came to the podium
- 12:07Speaker 2: after drafting the guy, the King of Competition, and he declared,
- 12:12Speaker 2: we just drafted our starting left tackle. Like I've never
- 12:15Speaker 2: heard him say that about a player after a draft
- 12:17Speaker 2: book like that.
- 12:18Speaker 3: They wanted Clady so bad they sent a contingent to
- 12:23Speaker 3: see the running back to so everyone would think they
- 12:26Speaker 3: were going to take the running back, and Carolina took
- 12:30Speaker 3: the back eventually in the first round, Jonathan Stewart.
- 12:34Speaker 1: One of my favorites. Highlight.
- 12:37Speaker 3: They wanted people. They wanted Klady so bad and didn't
- 12:40Speaker 3: want to show their hand. They sent a contingent to
- 12:44Speaker 3: see Stewart and a couple of days before the draft,
- 12:48Speaker 3: it was buzzing around the league at how interested the
- 12:50Speaker 3: Broncos were in Stuart, and really Mike had no intention
- 12:54Speaker 3: they spent all that money sending people to evaluate him
- 12:59Speaker 3: when they were going to take Clady.
- 13:00Speaker 1: The whole time, the Ian Johnson Statue of Liberty touchdown,
- 13:06Speaker 1: go back and watch what Clady does on that play.
- 13:10Speaker 1: The whole line it was. It was three dudes that
- 13:12Speaker 1: he just erased directly out of there.
- 13:16Speaker 2: He was so good.
- 13:18Speaker 3: I wish I think he's ringing a fame worthy about
- 13:21Speaker 3: you know, I don't know how the committee will vote
- 13:23Speaker 3: on that.
- 13:24Speaker 2: He was on his way to Hall of Fame, right, Jeff?
- 13:26Speaker 2: What was it? One sack his rookie year something like that.
- 13:29Speaker 3: He was such a good player, and you know, just
- 13:33Speaker 3: such a good player.
- 13:33Speaker 2: By the way, Eddie Royal is another guy.
- 13:36Speaker 3: You know in a weird training practice accident or whatever.
- 13:41Speaker 3: But uh, Blizz Frank, No, it was like an I
- 13:46Speaker 3: think it was a knee someth ptella. I can't remember.
- 13:48Speaker 2: I remember he did it, do him? He playing basketball?
- 13:50Speaker 2: We walked out of the damn draft. Remember it was
- 13:53Speaker 2: like a year or two later we walked out of
- 13:54Speaker 2: the draft and he heard is he playing basketball?
- 13:56Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, it was, it was, and and it messed
- 13:59Speaker 1: up an entire season.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Wait a minute, are you talking about the Super Bowl
- 14:02Speaker 2: season twenty fifteen where then they had to get Harrison here?
- 14:06Speaker 3: No, I mean just the injuries overall or just derailed him.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, but but his his peak was absolutely elite.
- 14:13Speaker 1: He could have been. Yeah, he was like Hall of
- 14:14Speaker 1: Fame talent.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Oh yeah, man, Yeah, we're talking Gary Zimmerman.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Yeah, he he really was that good. All right, there's
- 14:21Speaker 1: your there's your all quarter century Broncos offense. Uh, Peyton Manning,
- 14:26Speaker 1: d t and Rod uh Clinton, Portis, Mike Anderson, Julius Thomas.
- 14:30Speaker 1: That's your skill position group. Uh. And we're going bulls
- 14:34Speaker 1: Kladia tackle, Hamilton Cooper at guard, Tom Naylan at center.
- 14:39Speaker 1: There you are everybody that's that's the one right there.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Now, I'm trying to who's the who is the chief
- 14:45Speaker 2: center that replaced Naylan. I wanted to make Yeah, there
- 14:48Speaker 2: we go, Casey Weekman.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Yeah he was good too. He showed up here and
- 14:56Speaker 1: he was he was good. Yeah, he was like thirty eight.
- 14:59Speaker 2: It was really good. But I mean, come on.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Now, nay nay, sorry j D. Walton, with all due
- 15:06Speaker 1: respect Jeff Legwald. By the way, is there any Broncos
- 15:10Speaker 1: news we need to know right now?
- 15:12Speaker 3: Promise that's promised, Fellas Washington General is show.
- 15:19Speaker 2: Us the number. Turn it around.
- 15:20Speaker 1: You know what number did they get? You get? Wow?
- 15:25Speaker 3: Wow? Jeff?
- 15:26Speaker 2: That for that a great hockey number. No, that was
- 15:30Speaker 2: the year they didn't give you a leg Wald on
- 15:32Speaker 2: the back of that thing.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Oh baby, they handed me that. Baby, Actually the greatest,
- 15:37Speaker 3: greatest athletic thing. You can hear the coach before the game.
- 15:41Speaker 3: We're all in the huddle and they're explaining to me
- 15:44Speaker 3: when I'm gonna play and all this and how the
- 15:46Speaker 3: gags go with the globe crowders. And he looks at
- 15:50Speaker 3: me and he says, every time you touch the ball, shoot,
- 15:53Speaker 3: So I did, baby.
- 15:57Speaker 2: All right, here's what we need you to do. Send
- 15:58Speaker 2: me a picture of that so we could tweet it
- 16:00Speaker 2: out for people to see it.
- 16:01Speaker 1: There you go, Jeff, text me a picture. Jeff Legwald
- 16:04Speaker 1: was the original swaggy p Just shoot every time you
- 16:07Speaker 1: touch it.
- 16:08Speaker 3: Time you touch it, I score a three point play. Baby.
- 16:12Speaker 1: A couple of thoughts on the jersey. First off, there's
- 16:17Speaker 1: no name on the back, Andy, because when you played
- 16:18Speaker 1: for the Washington Generals, it's all about the name on
- 16:20Speaker 1: the front.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Well.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Yeah, And secondly, Jeff Legwald will go down as the
- 16:25Speaker 1: second greatest basketball ninety one ever. Do you know who
- 16:29Speaker 1: was number one on the list?
- 16:30Speaker 3: Dennis?
- 16:31Speaker 1: That's right, the worm in his Bulls ten years number
- 16:35Speaker 1: ninety one because he could not wear ten because it
- 16:37Speaker 1: was retired, Leggy. Do you know who wore number ten
- 16:41Speaker 1: for the Bulls that they retired the jersey going way back?
- 16:46Speaker 3: That?
- 16:48Speaker 2: It was Bob Love?
- 16:50Speaker 1: You're right, Bob Love, there you are.
- 16:53Speaker 3: That's that's my era.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Chet the Jet, No, Johnny Red Currt coaching the team.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Red Kirk the Jet.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Who was that.
- 17:04Speaker 3: Chat walker?
- 17:05Speaker 1: Yeah? Norm Van Lear used to be on TV. He
- 17:08Speaker 1: was awesome to love Norm van Leary.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Real quick, what do you think of our guy Caz
- 17:11Speaker 2: cause calling Chet?
