- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the Meat Eater podcast coming at you shirtless, severely,
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten, and in my case, underwear.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Listening toast, you can't predict anything presented by First Light,
- 0:22Speaker 2: creating proven versatile hunting apparel from Marino bass layers to
- 0:26Speaker 2: technical outerwear.
- 0:28Speaker 1: For every hunt, First Light, Go farther, stay longer. All right,
- 0:35Speaker 1: we're recording in Seth's trashed out. A frame is trashed out, Moldy, Alaska.
- 0:42Speaker 1: A frame which is looking really good. What's coming a
- 0:45Speaker 1: long way? Looking really good? The porch is still gone. Yeah,
- 0:49Speaker 1: no porch. The porch fell off.
- 0:53Speaker 3: It's kind of a nice touch though, because you know
- 0:55Speaker 3: those endless pools.
- 0:57Speaker 4: It is.
- 0:57Speaker 1: It's like an infinity It's like an infinity house.
- 1:01Speaker 5: When the tide is up and you sit where Chester is,
- 1:04Speaker 5: it's an infinity house. You cannot see land in between
- 1:09Speaker 5: the front windows.
- 1:10Speaker 1: And the and the water. It's amazing.
- 1:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:13Speaker 6: So we're looking at two big sliding glass doors at
- 1:16Speaker 6: the ocean.
- 1:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:18Speaker 1: When Seth bought his southeast last gay frame, I think
- 1:20Speaker 1: had you bought it? When I notified that your porch
- 1:22Speaker 1: was gone? Oh yeah, yeah, I came up and I
- 1:28Speaker 1: seth recollexes. I don't recollect. Yeah, I'll tell a story.
- 1:31Speaker 7: Kay.
- 1:33Speaker 5: We we hadn't as as the crew that bought this place.
- 1:36Speaker 5: We hadn't been up here all together yet. I was
- 1:39Speaker 5: the only one that had seen this place. Everyone else
- 1:41Speaker 5: bought Sight Unseen. But you came up last spring to
- 1:45Speaker 5: bear Hunt and I get a phone call from you
- 1:48Speaker 5: and you say I have good news and I have
- 1:51Speaker 5: bad news. And I was like, all right, well, let's
- 1:54Speaker 5: let's hear the bad news. And he goes, your porch
- 1:57Speaker 5: fell off. It's a high Like, what do you mean
- 2:02Speaker 5: fell off? And he said it fell off, it's laying
- 2:05Speaker 5: on the ground. Said all right, well, what's the good news?
- 2:09Speaker 5: He said, the fishing has been good.
- 2:15Speaker 4: Here's the thing.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Here's the thing right off top, going out of going
- 2:19Speaker 1: on a book tour with a twist, No, not really
- 2:24Speaker 1: a twist. So our first book ever for kids is
- 2:29Speaker 1: coming out, and we got some great videos coming up
- 2:32Speaker 1: to show the book. We got great videos. It's like,
- 2:36Speaker 1: you know, it's like those kind of videos where you
- 2:38Speaker 1: see someone doing something in a little bits. I don't
- 2:40Speaker 1: know what to tell you call them the process videos. Yeah,
- 2:45Speaker 1: process video. So we got a process video coming up.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Making your own scaler and scaling the bluegill, all with
- 2:51Speaker 1: real live kids doing it. We've got a process video
- 2:53Speaker 1: coming up. This will be on my Instagram at Steven
- 2:56Speaker 1: Ranella wherever. We got a process video coming up. And
- 2:59Speaker 1: make a bull gun out of nothing but stuff that
- 3:03Speaker 1: would be in any house besides a little chunk of PBC,
- 3:05Speaker 1: which is in most houses. Yeah, if you're a kid,
- 3:08Speaker 1: just tear the PVC off the wall.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Mm hmm, take a blow gun out of it.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Out of the wall. In my place, they used to
- 3:17Speaker 1: be exposed. But uh, you know what I'm saying. Yeah,
- 3:20Speaker 1: dig around, tear the sheet rock up. See if you
- 3:22Speaker 1: find the BBC back there.
- 3:23Speaker 3: You can find up here at the shack and.
- 3:26Speaker 4: Get you get your thing.
- 3:28Speaker 1: So everything every the book has everything you need to
- 3:33Speaker 1: not everything. You still gotta love them and feed them
- 3:35Speaker 1: and everything, but has much of what you need to
- 3:38Speaker 1: raise adventurous, competent outdoor kids with a little bit of
- 3:42Speaker 1: a raw edge to them. How to build, how to
- 3:46Speaker 1: build a campfires, how to build their own little ground blind,
- 3:51Speaker 1: how to build bullfrog gigs. Navigation using sun, navigation using stars,
- 3:59Speaker 1: hot tips on tree climbing, emergency shelters, identifying fossils, fish gutting,
- 4:04Speaker 1: animal tracking, much more. It's a great kids activity book.
- 4:09Speaker 1: A lot of stuff's little bit dangerous, so you gotta
- 4:11Speaker 1: do it with them. Some stuff's fine.
- 4:12Speaker 4: You go through the.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Book and you decide what the kid could do by
- 4:16Speaker 1: himself and what the kid ought to wait for you
- 4:18Speaker 1: to help them with. So I'm gonna go on. We're
- 4:25Speaker 1: gonna go on tour to sign the books, and I'll
- 4:27Speaker 1: be gone. I'll be out June sixteenth to June twenty fifth.
- 4:32Speaker 1: I'll be signing first edition copies of the new book
- 4:34Speaker 1: at Shields stores. Okay, so you go to your local
- 4:39Speaker 1: Shields store in the town's I'm gonna tell you about
- 4:41Speaker 1: a second here, and we'll do pictures and sign books. Billings.
- 4:47Speaker 1: That's Billings, Montana, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Omaha, Nebraska, Kansas City, Missouri, Dallas, Texas,
- 4:54Speaker 1: Colorado Springs and Johnston, Colorado, and Sandy, Utah. No eastern
- 5:02Speaker 1: cities at this time. But we're gonna do a lot.
- 5:04Speaker 1: We're gonna we're gonna have live shows coming up and
- 5:06Speaker 1: we'll hit other areas. Uh So here here's how this works.
- 5:11Speaker 1: And this is it's annoying, but it's just true. You
- 5:14Speaker 1: gotta buy a ticket to go. But all you're doing
- 5:16Speaker 1: you need to buy a ticket just buying the book. Okay,
- 5:18Speaker 1: you have to buy the book to go to get
- 5:22Speaker 1: in the door. I think there might be some way
- 5:25Speaker 1: to do it there, but like just but but it's capped. Okay,
- 5:31Speaker 1: So you buy the book. It's like you're buying a ticket,
- 5:33Speaker 1: but you're not. You're getting the book and and bring
- 5:35Speaker 1: your kids, like you don't need to buy a book
- 5:37Speaker 1: for everybody, like you know, buy the book, bring your kids.
- 5:41Speaker 4: So, any how's this go? I'm gonna make sure I
- 5:46Speaker 4: get this right.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Where do you go to get them?
- 5:50Speaker 6: Hey, to clarify, you're saying that a ticket would get
- 5:53Speaker 6: a family in Yeah, okay, that's big.
- 5:56Speaker 7: It's big.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Visit them meteater dot com for tickets. So go to
- 6:00Speaker 1: the meat eater dot com for tickets and we'll see
- 6:02Speaker 1: you at uh at the Shields store in those locations.
- 6:06Speaker 1: They'll get their book at the store with the ticket.
- 6:09Speaker 1: I believe you redeem it. Yeah, that's right, it sounds right.
- 6:12Speaker 1: You get it, and it's just the it's the cover
- 6:14Speaker 1: price of the book. It's just the cover price of
- 6:16Speaker 1: the book. When you get there, your book will be
- 6:18Speaker 1: waiting for you. Will get your book signed. It's great.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Do some pictures. Shield Stores got it.
- 6:26Speaker 4: That's big. Yeah.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Did you say the name of the book, Steve. I
- 6:30Speaker 1: don't think you said the name of the book. I
- 6:32Speaker 1: know you've said it a lot, Clay, I know you
- 6:34Speaker 1: said it a lot. Guy's like a professional cat. Count
- 6:39Speaker 1: the Stars. Great mind that fun projects, skills and adventures
- 6:44Speaker 1: for outdoor kids.
- 6:46Speaker 6: I think this would be a good book to buy
- 6:48Speaker 6: as a gift for people that have young kids for real,
- 6:52Speaker 6: like as as a friend the family that's got young
- 6:56Speaker 6: kids and you're going, let's say you're going to their
- 6:58Speaker 6: house for you know, a special holiday. You just want
- 7:02Speaker 6: to bring a housewarming gift or whatever.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Catch a crayfish. Count the Stars. I'm going to get
- 7:07Speaker 3: one for Oscar.
- 7:09Speaker 4: That's a great idea. I'll tell you one, as.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Long as it's signed to Oscar Love Steve.
- 7:19Speaker 1: I was fishing the day you were born. There you go,
- 7:23Speaker 1: that's that's what it's gonna say. But didn't catch nothing.
- 7:29Speaker 3: I'm gonna leave that little detail because I wasn't with
- 7:31Speaker 3: your dad.
- 7:32Speaker 6: No.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Uh oh, here here's a call to action. I need everybody.
- 7:38Speaker 1: People got to listen up. We're doing so. If you
- 7:42Speaker 1: followed our Campfire Story series Campfire Stories Close Calls, there's
- 7:48Speaker 1: the Close Calls Volume one, Close Calls Volume two. These
- 7:51Speaker 1: are audio originals we're working on running right now. And
- 7:55Speaker 1: here's what we're looking for. We're looking for people out
- 7:59Speaker 1: there who have had unexpected finds finding something crazy. It
- 8:06Speaker 1: doesn't even need to be totally unexpected, but finding something crazy.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Let's say you were the person that found the Edmund
- 8:13Speaker 1: Fitzgerald sunk on the bottom Leg Superior. That's say you
- 8:20Speaker 1: found a body that had been missing for decades while
- 8:23Speaker 1: you're out hunting. That's interesting. Definitely say you had say
- 8:29Speaker 1: you were, oh this artifact yep. Like for instance, when
- 8:35Speaker 1: we had Mike Cunson and Mike Couns talked about finding
- 8:39Speaker 1: the MASA site, that's interesting. It could be anything that
- 8:45Speaker 1: we're just looking for great stories of finding discovery. It
- 8:50Speaker 1: could even be and I hesitant to say this, but
- 8:52Speaker 1: in the perfect scenario, it could be that you found
- 8:55Speaker 1: out something about yourself.
- 8:59Speaker 5: But go light on those. That's a high bar about
- 9:04Speaker 5: like finding a well preserved bear trap in the mountains.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Perfect, that would be good. Here's another one that's good
- 9:12Speaker 1: you find a frozen ice age hunter coming thawing out
- 9:16Speaker 1: of a glacier. Hey, what if.
- 9:18Speaker 6: You your father was hunting in the nineteen nineties and
- 9:25Speaker 6: he died, but before he died, he shot a bull
- 9:28Speaker 6: elk that he never found that fell into a glacier.
- 9:32Speaker 6: Twenty years later, you come back with your son who's
- 9:37Speaker 6: never met his grandfather, and you find the bull elk
- 9:40Speaker 6: in the glacier.
- 9:41Speaker 1: How about that?
- 9:43Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 9:44Speaker 1: Well, see, okay, okay, a hermit, you found a little hermit.
- 9:50Speaker 1: That would be a good story. The more relevance, the
- 9:55Speaker 1: better to the find, like, for instance, the guy that
- 9:58Speaker 1: found Samuel Champlainan's astro labe while tilling a field in Ontario.
- 10:03Speaker 1: That's interesting, but you can't set.
- 10:06Speaker 6: The bar too high because most of us have not
- 10:10Speaker 6: made like world changing discoveries in the wild.
- 10:13Speaker 1: We need to hear stories about the stories we're looking at.
- 10:16Speaker 4: So if you got.
- 10:16Speaker 3: One, If you were fishing and you hooked body with
- 10:24Speaker 3: your number, a box with your or an old shoe
- 10:28Speaker 3: with your crank bait and reel them in and it
- 10:31Speaker 3: was a person.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Oh yeah, right in about that for sure.
- 10:34Speaker 5: When I was beach combing yesterday, I came across the
- 10:37Speaker 5: wet suit down in all the rubble. You did, Yeah,
- 10:40Speaker 5: I did? And I was like, am I about to
- 10:42Speaker 5: find a dead person?
- 10:43Speaker 1: You found a wetsuit beach coming?
- 10:45Speaker 4: Yeah, it was all tore up. Yeah, you didn't even
- 10:48Speaker 4: tell us. You should write into this email.
- 10:50Speaker 1: I about ready to give I will campfire stories at
- 10:53Speaker 1: the meater dot com onto the news.
- 11:00Speaker 4: I was like reluctant to cover anything.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Out of Yellowstone guy the Yellowstone. A bunch of bikes
- 11:05Speaker 1: that swim across the river, although Calf can't make it
- 11:08Speaker 1: to him. Calf gets stranded on the bank. Okay, the
- 11:13Speaker 1: herd takes off the other side.
- 11:14Speaker 4: Of the Lamar.
- 11:15Speaker 3: Somebody put it in their car.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Again, No, he didn't do that.
- 11:17Speaker 1: He screed it up the hill and like screried it
- 11:21Speaker 1: back up the hill away from the river. A white male.
- 11:27Speaker 4: Oh, by that, that's it. That's it. I was thinking, like.
- 11:35Speaker 1: I thought, Balder baldering today is long blue T shirt?
- 11:39Speaker 1: Are we looking for this guy? Shades? So I think
- 11:41Speaker 1: they got him. He's got a grain beard, shades, Balder
- 11:47Speaker 1: and cow.
- 11:51Speaker 4: I thought it was gonna be that Ma came down
- 11:53Speaker 4: down the bank and.
- 11:54Speaker 1: No, he they already found him. He played guilty. OK
- 11:57Speaker 1: so this guy got in trouble for doing that. Yeah,
- 12:00Speaker 1: so he he uh, he got intro over doing it.
- 12:07Speaker 1: So he pushed the struggling calf up from the river
- 12:11Speaker 1: and onto the roadway, where it proceeded to like follow
- 12:16Speaker 1: cars around and be abandoned. And they said the herd
- 12:20Speaker 1: wouldn't accept it because the man touched it. I don't
- 12:25Speaker 1: know that I buy that.
- 12:26Speaker 4: I don't either.
- 12:27Speaker 1: I think that it might have or like it didn't
- 12:29Speaker 1: cross the river when they crossed the river and they
- 12:33Speaker 1: abandoned it there. I think this guy's getting in trouble
- 12:36Speaker 1: for something he didn't do. Find two hundred and thirty
- 12:39Speaker 1: five bucks and had to pay five hundred dollars to
- 12:42Speaker 1: the Yellowstone Park Foundation Wildlife Protection Fund. He didn't flat
- 12:47Speaker 1: out break the rules. You can't get within you can't.
- 12:52Speaker 1: You gotta stay twenty five yards away from uh, you
- 12:55Speaker 1: got to stay twenty five yards away from by some
- 13:01Speaker 1: hundred yard hundred yards away from bears wolves. Park officials
- 13:06Speaker 1: are investigating. I don't know why.
- 13:09Speaker 5: At this point, it's not clear to people that like
- 13:11Speaker 5: when you go to Yellowstone, don't touch the animals.
- 13:15Speaker 4: Well, you can picture this poor you can picture this
- 13:17Speaker 4: poor guy.
- 13:17Speaker 1: He's like, it's stranded, dude.
- 13:19Speaker 3: How many It's still like, how many people go to
- 13:22Speaker 3: Yellowstone every year? Like the chances of there being a
- 13:27Speaker 3: couple kind of you.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Just can't get the word out enough. Yeah, just don't
- 13:32Speaker 1: touch the animals, don't touch the critters, and like, don't
- 13:35Speaker 1: touch the critters.
- 13:36Speaker 5: But also I don't know what people's like vision of
- 13:39Speaker 5: Yellowstone is, but like natural life still goes on there,
- 13:44Speaker 5: you know, and like if you see a bison calf
- 13:48Speaker 5: that's like about to die, like it would have like
- 13:51Speaker 5: that's how it works.
- 13:52Speaker 7: Well, it's like they've never heard of Yellowstone because if
- 13:55Speaker 7: you're looking for Yellowstone in the news, it's just people
- 13:58Speaker 7: getting in trouble forgetting too close to the animals.
- 14:01Speaker 1: They're like, oh, you meet that place, you're going to
- 14:02Speaker 1: get in trouble to touch everything. A listener did us
- 14:06Speaker 1: a great favor. We've talked a couple of times about
- 14:10Speaker 1: the guy. Every time. If you're like a male, I
- 14:14Speaker 1: don't know how they I'm sure this is served heavily
- 14:16Speaker 1: to males. If you're a male in the let's say
- 14:19Speaker 1: twenty to fifty age bracket, I'm guessing who they're serving
- 14:23Speaker 1: this ad to you're familiar with the shirtless guy making
- 14:27Speaker 1: selfie videos or he's on fake podcasts, yeah v shred,
- 14:32Speaker 1: and he's like, he'll say something to the effect of yeah,
- 14:36Speaker 1: oh is it. I think he'll say something to the
- 14:38Speaker 1: effect of everybody knows cardio, Bill burns fat right wrong?
- 14:42Speaker 1: Oh yeah, well the YouTube ats yeah yeah, and you
- 14:46Speaker 1: want to and you don't talk, and you're like, man.
- 14:49Speaker 7: Is he right?
- 14:50Speaker 1: Well a guy he was. He was alerting me a
- 14:53Speaker 1: couple of times to a testosterone killing food.
- 14:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I've heard that one.
- 14:59Speaker 1: And I would watch as long as I could bear it,
- 15:01Speaker 1: and I did never find out what exactly is killing
- 15:04Speaker 1: men's testosterone. So a guy had a listener after listening
- 15:10Speaker 1: to Monday's episode, you guys are joking about the YouTube
- 15:13Speaker 1: ad guy where the guy never gets to the point.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Shortly after listening, of course, his ad popped up. I'm
- 15:20Speaker 1: a painter, so I threw in my earbud. God's listening
- 15:25Speaker 1: after watching a one hour and eighteen minute video, no joke.
- 15:28Speaker 1: The mystery food killing testosterone was flax seeds ps. After
- 15:37Speaker 1: watching the video, I'm still unsure of what the guy
- 15:39Speaker 1: is selling. Huh, that really is one of the great
- 15:44Speaker 1: mysteries of the Internet.
- 15:45Speaker 4: Now here.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Well, no, just like one of that guy's selling.
- 15:49Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Yeah, Now, folks, stay tuned, because're gonna pretty sum We're
- 15:53Speaker 1: gonna talk about the new revolutionary black bear hunting technique
- 15:58Speaker 1: I developed Clay executed upon. It was a it was
- 16:02Speaker 1: a cold ab Yeah. I developed it and then quickly
- 16:08Speaker 1: tried to abandon it, but Clay stuck it out. Clay
- 16:14Speaker 1: stuck it out and developed the new technique, which I'm
- 16:17Speaker 1: hesitant to even bring up. I might make a YouTube
- 16:20Speaker 1: video where I'd be like, what's the best way to
- 16:23Speaker 1: kill a black bird? And just and then you watch
- 16:27Speaker 1: and watch, watch, I'd never tell you and at the
- 16:29Speaker 1: end you're like, this one secret.
- 16:33Speaker 4: Okay.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Now, you guys gotta pay attention because this is very philosophical.
- 16:39Speaker 1: In episode four forty, you all debated whether it would
- 16:42Speaker 1: be okay to lie on a rental application, asking if
- 16:46Speaker 1: a tenant planned to bring firearms into a home. I
- 16:51Speaker 1: remember this, He says, this is not an etiquette question,
- 16:55Speaker 1: it's a philosophical question. During that converse, Steve used the
- 17:02Speaker 1: quote murderer at the door scenario. Now pay careful attention.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Most of the other podcast members, and especially phil seemed
- 17:13Speaker 1: to think it was irrelevant to the situation being discussed.
- 17:18Speaker 1: I'm quoting from the person that wrote in it's actually
- 17:21Speaker 1: it's my favorite part. It's actually very relevant. The murder
- 17:27Speaker 1: at the door scenario was made by the philosopher Emmanuel
- 17:31Speaker 1: Cant in the eighteenth century, specifically to counter a French
- 17:38Speaker 1: philosopher's claim that you only have a moral obligation to
- 17:42Speaker 1: tell the truth to one who has a right to truth.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Can't believe that being truthful was a sacred and unconditionally
- 17:54Speaker 1: commanding law in all situations, even if there was a
- 17:59Speaker 1: murder at your door looking for your friend. Can't would
- 18:05Speaker 1: say that the man who wrote in asking for advice
- 18:08Speaker 1: was morally obligated to be truthful on the rental application,
- 18:12Speaker 1: regardless of the potential outcome. The less famous French philosopher,
- 18:18Speaker 1: who I think is right, would say that the man
- 18:22Speaker 1: could morally lie if the person renting the home had
- 18:27Speaker 1: no right to know, if a potential tenant had firearms,
- 18:34Speaker 1: no right to know. Meaning you're out fishing and you
- 18:38Speaker 1: just laying on a real hotspot. Some guy you never
- 18:43Speaker 1: met in your life says, are you catching anything? You
- 18:48Speaker 1: go just a little one or whatever. You say, nothing much.
- 18:55Speaker 3: Yeah, that happened that you feel that happened all the time.
- 19:00Speaker 4: They have no right to know.
- 19:02Speaker 1: But then, but then your main fishing partner says, did
- 19:04Speaker 1: you catch any He has a right to know.
- 19:10Speaker 5: Yeah, oh, if I'm catching him, I'm on the phone
- 19:12Speaker 5: with my main fishing partner.
- 19:14Speaker 4: Go ahead, if I'm not with him.
- 19:17Speaker 1: Do you want to hear the rest? Because he gets
- 19:18Speaker 1: into you in a minute here?
- 19:20Speaker 4: Sure?
- 19:20Speaker 3: Why not?
- 19:22Speaker 1: Chester's argument that if the wife really wanted the apartment
- 19:27Speaker 1: and you did too, then you could fib it a
- 19:30Speaker 1: little bit, which is a quote, is essentially hedonism, a
- 19:36Speaker 1: philosophy which claims that man's only moral obligation is to
- 19:40Speaker 1: maximize his own pleasure. I don't think there are many
- 19:45Speaker 1: etiquette books written by hedonists, So if he acts fast,
- 19:48Speaker 1: he might be a able to corner the market. Could
- 19:54Speaker 1: I give one last thing before you counter Chester? He says, Anyways,
- 19:59Speaker 1: love the podcast. I've noticed I'm not going to get
- 20:02Speaker 1: into details on this. He goes, I've noticed that there's
- 20:05Speaker 1: often an inverse correlation between the fame of your guest.
- 20:09Speaker 4: And the quality of the show.
- 20:13Speaker 1: It goes on to have many examples which I'm not
- 20:21Speaker 1: going to read the examples because that's mean go ahead, Chester.
- 20:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I was kind of going back and forth on that.
- 20:29Speaker 3: That one the etiquette thing there. I think I should
- 20:33Speaker 3: have stuck with my guns what I said.
- 20:35Speaker 1: First, which was none of their business.
- 20:39Speaker 3: No, I think I said I would tell the truth.
- 20:43Speaker 1: You're like a can't You're like an emmanual can't. Yeah,
- 20:47Speaker 1: but whatever, I would not tell the truth.
- 20:50Speaker 8: Hey, everyone, filled just chiming in here to stave off
- 20:53Speaker 8: any sort of snarky emails we might get containing something
- 20:56Speaker 8: along the lines of, oh, Steve can't pronounce Kant, a
- 21:00Speaker 8: dumb joke that I would never make. Of course, Steve
- 21:03Speaker 8: is aware that the name is pronounced Emmanuel kanked.
- 21:06Speaker 4: Back to the.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Show, guy wrote in about uh, for some ate, I
- 21:12Speaker 1: can't remember this. We were talking about coin purses made
- 21:15Speaker 1: out of kangaro nut sacks.
- 21:17Speaker 4: Is that true?
- 21:18Speaker 1: I mean, it's not shocking.
- 21:20Speaker 4: I think we talked about that.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Uh.
- 21:25Speaker 4: Wasn't there like a they shut down?
- 21:27Speaker 1: Yeah, but I remember talking about anyway, this guy says,
- 21:32Speaker 1: my family we have a long history making buck ball
- 21:36Speaker 1: bag gearshift covers after you get a buck. I've seen
- 21:40Speaker 1: these sharing it. I've never done it. After you get
- 21:44Speaker 1: a buck, you cut the scroll off and empty the contents.
- 21:46Speaker 1: You didn't put that over the shift knob like a helmet.
- 21:50Speaker 1: I like that little detail like a helmet on your
- 21:53Speaker 1: manual transmission or transfer k ship knob and tie the
- 21:58Speaker 1: bottom off of the short piece of straight He likes
- 22:02Speaker 1: to run fuzzy side out. The bag drives around the
- 22:06Speaker 1: shift knobs, saving you, leaving you with a great conversation
- 22:09Speaker 1: piece and a warm soft spot to put your hand
- 22:12Speaker 1: in a cold winter's day. Most commonly people will ask
- 22:18Speaker 1: if it's a rabbit.
- 22:19Speaker 4: It's not.
- 22:22Speaker 1: In my opinion, anyone who takes issue with it doesn't
- 22:24Speaker 1: need to ride all that bad. He also points out
- 22:28Speaker 1: there's no stink. As the hair wears off over time,
- 22:33Speaker 1: you'll be left with a thin lever color, a thin
- 22:35Speaker 1: leather cover that can last for years. Eventually it will
- 22:39Speaker 1: crack one day. You'll have to take it off or
- 22:42Speaker 1: it'll fall off. The factory nob becomes a subconscious reminder
- 22:47Speaker 1: that has been a while since you were successful.
- 22:51Speaker 4: This is deep. I feel like you should.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Yeah, find a roll for this guy. Email writer Mulders
- 23:02Speaker 1: seemed to best for my making model Antelope or tad
- 23:08Speaker 1: small big shifter elk is too big. Big horn sheep
- 23:14Speaker 1: sacks would probably cover the shift now shift lever and
- 23:17Speaker 1: half the transmission. You can't send a picture because he's
- 23:23Speaker 1: in Japan.
- 23:24Speaker 6: Oh wow, we need to have that guy under a buck.
- 23:35Speaker 4: This guy's good.
- 23:36Speaker 1: I want to know what he's doing in Japan. It's
- 23:38Speaker 1: probably he's military.
- 23:40Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, yeah, Okay, what's a guy that's got a
- 23:46Speaker 6: buck buck sack on his shifter doing in Japan?
- 23:50Speaker 4: Military? Here's a good one.
- 23:56Speaker 1: This is a chatticate question, so the rule on chettikot
- 24:00Speaker 1: check gets the final answer, even though it's probably wrong.
- 24:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:06Speaker 1: Can I coach him just a little bit? Yeah, I'm
- 24:09Speaker 1: staying out of.
- 24:09Speaker 6: No no, no no, like beforehand, like I don't want to
- 24:11Speaker 6: get into the we need, this is what we need?
- 24:15Speaker 1: He would tell you would he would lose the apartment
- 24:17Speaker 1: over someone telling someone something that's none of their business. Well,
- 24:20Speaker 1: I'm saying we just need more certainty.
- 24:23Speaker 3: Okay.
- 24:24Speaker 6: I think you know you have an opinion. Yeah, I
- 24:27Speaker 6: think you're being more like a magic eight ball. You're
- 24:30Speaker 6: being pulled a little bit too hard. I think sometimes
- 24:33Speaker 6: we're left not knowing really what you think.
- 24:35Speaker 3: I think really what happens is like I'm on a
- 24:38Speaker 3: podcast right now, so what I say is gonna be
- 24:41Speaker 3: heard by a lot of people. So I'm thinking about
- 24:43Speaker 3: it too hard, and I just need to go with
- 24:45Speaker 3: my guts and trust yourself. So I'm going to be certain.
- 24:59Speaker 4: Is cheikak.
- 25:00Speaker 1: I'm not gonna say anything, Clay I want you can
- 25:02Speaker 1: talk about it. You can talk about it, Doctor Randall.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Feel free. I have a question concerning the purchase of land.
- 25:14Speaker 4: Seth perk right up to see that I like purchasing land.
- 25:18Speaker 4: I have found.
- 25:20Speaker 1: I have found fifteen acres in a western state that
- 25:25Speaker 1: is bordered by over fifteen thousand acres of mostly land.
- 25:32Speaker 4: Locked public land.
- 25:35Speaker 1: There are only a couple of homes within a quarter
- 25:38Speaker 1: mile from the house, so it's perfectly remote. But you
- 25:42Speaker 1: still have what I'm hoping to cool neighbors. If I
- 25:45Speaker 1: purchase the land, what do I do about public access?
- 25:52Speaker 1: I don't want to be the feller in Wyoming that
- 25:56Speaker 1: brought the nonsense corner crossing bs, which a judge is
- 26:03Speaker 1: you know that that guy's getting totally shot down. There's
- 26:08Speaker 1: just another ruling in that case, which is more to
- 26:11Speaker 1: the effect of nothing happened like nothing happened to your land.
- 26:18Speaker 1: No damage is done by corner crossers. We're gonna cover
- 26:23Speaker 1: that in greater detail as things become more clear. Anyhow,
- 26:26Speaker 1: he doesn't want to be that guy. However, I don't
- 26:28Speaker 1: know how I feel about a bunch of people parking
- 26:30Speaker 1: on my land to access to public land. Now that
- 26:34Speaker 1: I'm typing this, I don't really know how to ask
- 26:37Speaker 1: what I want to know.
- 26:42Speaker 5: I think he wants to know, would you let would
- 26:44Speaker 5: you let people? So, here's your land to access to?
- 26:47Speaker 1: Yeh, so here he's saying, here I am. I'm gonna
- 26:49Speaker 1: buy a chunk of private land that has access to
- 26:52Speaker 1: landlocked public land. Does he have a moral obligation to
- 26:57Speaker 1: make his house a trailhead? Well, I don't think. From
- 27:01Speaker 1: I don't think a moral obligation.
- 27:02Speaker 4: No.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Well, so I'm staying out of it.
- 27:04Speaker 3: Oh yeah, from the contract, from the context that we
- 27:07Speaker 3: got he leaves in there he says mostly landlocked. So
- 27:14Speaker 3: if if it's truly landlocked, I would say, I'm all
- 27:19Speaker 3: about letting people access public land. I think we are
- 27:23Speaker 3: all too, So I would say you could probably work
- 27:27Speaker 3: with your work with the state and get a little
- 27:32Speaker 3: parking area or something and.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Really you would do that, Chester, I don't think you
- 27:36Speaker 1: understand what's happening here?
- 27:37Speaker 4: What he?
- 27:40Speaker 3: Yeah? I do?
- 27:40Speaker 1: I mean, as are you kidding me?
- 27:44Speaker 4: You might have just bought the best hunting property, Jess.
- 27:47Speaker 1: You're saying, you're saying that if you bought fifteen acres
- 27:50Speaker 1: of land and it gave you access to fifteen thousand
- 27:54Speaker 1: acres of landlocked and when he says mostly land, I
- 27:57Speaker 1: don't know what he means. But okay, you bought fifteen
- 28:00Speaker 1: acres in a butt's a big chunk of landlocked public
- 28:05Speaker 1: you're saying you would turn your fifteen acres into a
- 28:08Speaker 1: public access part. That's that is wonderful if true.
- 28:13Speaker 3: I mean, dude, think about all this stuff we do
- 28:17Speaker 3: at Meat Eater to get access to public land, like
- 28:21Speaker 3: you put where your mouth is. Yeah, why wouldn't Why
- 28:24Speaker 3: wouldn't you if you're if we're we're the ones raising
- 28:28Speaker 3: money to get easements and stuff like this.
- 28:30Speaker 4: What about if you didn't work at meat Eater.
- 28:36Speaker 3: I probably I wouldn't let people access.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Real life scenario.
- 28:41Speaker 6: You wouldn't be quite that altruistic like in a real
- 28:44Speaker 6: life scenario.
- 28:45Speaker 3: We I'm just saying with what we're doing, right now
- 28:49Speaker 3: I'm being certain here, Okay, Clay, Okay, with what we're
- 28:52Speaker 3: doing at meat Eater and raising all this money for
- 28:55Speaker 3: land access and stuff. Absolutely, that's fifteen thousand whatever he said,
- 29:04Speaker 3: that's a ton of hunting land that that for that
- 29:11Speaker 3: we are raising money for currently to try and like
- 29:14Speaker 3: get little easements.
- 29:15Speaker 1: And I like him to send me the listing. He
- 29:18Speaker 1: doesn't even give what state.
- 29:19Speaker 5: I was gonna say that guy, if he's ever interested
- 29:22Speaker 5: in selling, should send an email to cal kelb and
- 29:25Speaker 5: and and maybe they can work out a little land
- 29:28Speaker 5: access initiative deal.
- 29:29Speaker 1: There, did I say I was gonna stay out of it?
- 29:32Speaker 1: You did, Well, you can take it back. I'm taking
- 29:34Speaker 1: it back. Here's what I do. Here's what I do
- 29:38Speaker 1: if I real world scenario I bought that chunk. Real
- 29:44Speaker 1: world scenario is I wouldn't be a tight ass with
- 29:46Speaker 1: my friends and stuff, but I don't know that I
- 29:49Speaker 1: would actually turn my home into a trailhead. I would
- 29:52Speaker 1: probably be like I like to think I would be
- 29:55Speaker 1: very generous with friends and kids and neighbors and whatnot,
- 29:59Speaker 1: But I don't know that I would put up a sign,
- 30:02Speaker 1: just just trying to be realistic. And I think it's
- 30:05Speaker 1: it's it's a there.
- 30:06Speaker 6: It could be spread out into different areas of life
- 30:09Speaker 6: where you have access to something good. It's like we
- 30:12Speaker 6: have a great elk pot roast cooking in the kitchen.
- 30:16Speaker 6: Are we gonna let all the strangers that want to
- 30:19Speaker 6: come eat dinner with us? Come eat dinner?
- 30:20Speaker 9: No?
- 30:21Speaker 1: Yes, are we gonna.
- 30:23Speaker 6: I mean, it's just like there's all kinds of stuff
- 30:25Speaker 6: that we individually have access to that we have a
- 30:28Speaker 6: right to as humans, to have some access to something that's.
- 30:32Speaker 7: And this guy, as the most recent purchaser of land
- 30:38Speaker 7: adjacent to this big chunk of public it's he's under
- 30:42Speaker 7: no obligation to solve a problem that everybody else isn't solving. Yeah,
- 30:48Speaker 7: I mean he might actually he might piss off his neighbors.
- 30:52Speaker 7: Or he will for sure. Oh yeah, if and if
- 30:55Speaker 7: you really I mean, I would approach it similarly to you.
- 30:58Speaker 7: And if I felt really good guilty about it, I
- 31:01Speaker 7: would make it my life's mission to establish new access
- 31:04Speaker 7: to some other piece of public life someone else on
- 31:07Speaker 7: the other side of the way.
- 31:11Speaker 6: It would be the same question of if you had,
- 31:13Speaker 6: you know, fifteen acres of private ground. It's like Chester,
- 31:17Speaker 6: would you let the public public hunt, and answer would
- 31:22Speaker 6: be would be no.
- 31:23Speaker 1: Here's Oh that's a great Let's say yeah, Chester, Let's
- 31:26Speaker 1: say you bought.
- 31:27Speaker 3: Here's the deal. Clay brought up the pot roast thing.
- 31:32Speaker 3: You know, if I'm cooking a pot roast in my
- 31:36Speaker 3: kitchen and I'm not going to go hold a sign
- 31:39Speaker 3: out like Steve saying hey, come and get some pot roast.
- 31:43Speaker 3: But if some guy out there rolls up on his
- 31:46Speaker 3: boat and it's raining and he's like, you guys, got
- 31:48Speaker 3: any food, I'm going to welcome in in here with
- 31:52Speaker 3: open arms and I'm going to give him some of
- 31:54Speaker 3: that pot roast. Is if I own a chunk of
- 31:59Speaker 3: private property. My father, he owns a junk of private property.
- 32:03Speaker 3: He doesn't have a sign out in front of it
- 32:05Speaker 3: saying come hunt. Okay, But if some guy comes over
- 32:08Speaker 3: with it compelling story.
- 32:12Speaker 1: Moldial a frame porch fell off, Yeah, it'd be generous.
- 32:17Speaker 3: Yeah, our friend Carl, Carl Malcolm, that's ask my father there.
- 32:25Speaker 5: But on your property, my a frame in Alaska, the
- 32:31Speaker 5: porch fell off, I can hunt.
- 32:35Speaker 4: Sorry, go ahead.
- 32:38Speaker 3: So I I know a guy also that has an
- 32:40Speaker 3: easement through his property and he's got it on the corner.
- 32:44Speaker 3: He doesn't have a big old sign out there. People
- 32:47Speaker 3: aren't constantly people know, the people that know know, and
- 32:53Speaker 3: it's not a whole lot of people accessing that. And
- 32:57Speaker 3: also those people that access through that do all kinds
- 33:00Speaker 3: are real nice things for that guy, really like, you know,
- 33:05Speaker 3: they take care of him. So I don't think it
- 33:09Speaker 3: be the worst thing in the world. It's all just
- 33:11Speaker 3: depends on the situation. But we gotta we gotta put
- 33:15Speaker 3: our money where our mouth is at meat eating.
- 33:19Speaker 5: Back in the day, while I was still in Pennsylvania,
- 33:21Speaker 5: I was real young. The hunting property at my family owns,
- 33:24Speaker 5: which you got Steve Chat, you've guys seen. We used
- 33:28Speaker 5: to be enrolled in this program with the Game Commission
- 33:31Speaker 5: where they would supply trees and food, plot seed, and
- 33:35Speaker 5: we would plan all that stuff and then let the
- 33:37Speaker 5: public on it.
- 33:39Speaker 4: But that quickly quickly ended, did it? Yeah?
- 33:43Speaker 1: Too much chaos?
- 33:44Speaker 4: Too much chaos.
- 33:45Speaker 5: You try to go up to your tree staying on
- 33:47Speaker 5: opening morning and someone's sitting in your stand like it
- 33:52Speaker 5: was just yeah too it was too much to handle,
- 33:55Speaker 5: and you just basically lost all your opportunity on your
- 33:59Speaker 5: own property.
- 34:00Speaker 7: You know.
- 34:00Speaker 4: But it worked for a little bit. But yeah, so
- 34:04Speaker 4: that's like.
- 34:06Speaker 1: Kind of brings this whole conversation on the sour note
- 34:09Speaker 1: just one perspective.
- 34:11Speaker 7: Well, I'm glad that there's chesters out there.
- 34:14Speaker 1: Maybe there are a lot of chesters out there in
- 34:15Speaker 1: the world, because I know and am the beneficiary of
- 34:20Speaker 1: many landowners who are exceedingly generous. Doug, Bubby Doug. I
- 34:25Speaker 1: can't remember to help someone like Bubby. I can't remember
- 34:28Speaker 1: with the number Bubby Doug had like forty some people
- 34:31Speaker 1: hundred dugs place last year.
- 34:34Speaker 4: He's controlled about it. You know, you got like.
- 34:38Speaker 1: Turkey a season, Turkey b season down the line, you
- 34:41Speaker 1: got like you know, youth dear rifle late this. You know,
- 34:48Speaker 1: he's measured about it and kind of has a schedule
- 34:50Speaker 1: in his head. But man, yeah, nothing wrong with being generous,
- 34:55Speaker 1: super generous. My friend Mark lives by me. Super generous
- 35:00Speaker 1: people are always out there, super good about kids. Right,
- 35:05Speaker 1: He's not in a program, he's not an access program,
- 35:10Speaker 1: no big sign out front, but like exceedingly generous to
- 35:14Speaker 1: the point where you like you're saying, to the point
- 35:16Speaker 1: where you are costing yourself opportunity because you could just
- 35:19Speaker 1: you could just be like mine, mind mine.
- 35:21Speaker 3: But in the in the long run that that probably
- 35:25Speaker 3: makes a guy like Doug, you know, just just a
- 35:31Speaker 3: happier human being because he's sharing and stuff. I don't know.
- 35:35Speaker 6: So could we say that this guy has a moral
- 35:37Speaker 6: obligation to be generous?
- 35:41Speaker 7: No, no, but he'd probably he'd probably feel good if
- 35:46Speaker 7: he was.
- 35:50Speaker 1: Okay, ready to move on?
- 35:51Speaker 3: Yep, you go, Chester, Yeah, I'm good.
- 35:54Speaker 1: So the final thing is Chester is Chester's taking the
- 35:57Speaker 1: moral high ground, doing what's right. Yeah, So we kind
- 36:01Speaker 1: of forgot about the listener. If you buy that place,
- 36:04Speaker 1: it's great. If you don't let me know where that
- 36:05Speaker 1: spot's at.
- 36:07Speaker 3: Whatever he does, you know, I'm not going to be
- 36:11Speaker 3: bummed up, you know, if he wants to keep that
- 36:13Speaker 3: to himself, just what I would do.
- 36:16Speaker 1: So over the years of over the years of hunting
- 36:22Speaker 1: coastal black bears, I have made adopted a couple of
- 36:30Speaker 1: strategies that I like. And one strategy I adopted for
- 36:35Speaker 1: hunting coastal black bears is to do it in waiters. Now,
- 36:40Speaker 1: when you're doing it in waiters, there is the obvious
- 36:44Speaker 1: safety risk. You do not want to go overboard in
- 36:50Speaker 1: deep water with good current cold water in waiters. That
- 36:57Speaker 1: is a that's just the reality. You could act like
- 37:02Speaker 1: you're going to be so diligent that you don't put
- 37:05Speaker 1: your waiters on until you're ready to get out and
- 37:08Speaker 1: go after a bear, But that's you're.
- 37:10Speaker 4: Not being realistic.
- 37:12Speaker 1: I leave in my waiters and I am out in
- 37:15Speaker 1: my skiff in my waiters, which many people would think
- 37:18Speaker 1: is not smart because when you go overboard, if you
- 37:23Speaker 1: hit something. And we were hanging out with the kid
- 37:27Speaker 1: last night that recently went overboard. He had a full
- 37:31Speaker 1: survival suit on, so a full Mustang suit. I'll think
- 37:34Speaker 1: about getting me one of them full Mustang suits.
- 37:36Speaker 6: You should do it, man. This me being up here
- 37:40Speaker 6: for the first time. It's striking to me. I think
- 37:44Speaker 6: you guys are desensitized to it. But how dangerous that, sir?
- 37:47Speaker 4: Oh it is.
- 37:48Speaker 1: I was talking to an uber driver in catch Can
- 37:50Speaker 1: one time and he was coastguard and we got to
- 37:53Speaker 1: talking and he had over his career, he's kind of
- 37:57Speaker 1: retired and started driving. Over his career, he had been
- 38:01Speaker 1: to many distress calls and many bodies. One that shook
- 38:10Speaker 1: him up one time is the guy had tied himself
- 38:14Speaker 1: to his skiff, tied himself to the flipped over, tied
- 38:21Speaker 1: himself to a capsized skiff, and he felt.
- 38:23Speaker 4: It was obviously so that his body would be recovered.
- 38:29Speaker 1: Another time, he talked about two people had made it
- 38:31Speaker 1: to the beach and were dead leaning on a tree
- 38:36Speaker 1: in the winter.
- 38:38Speaker 6: What one of the first days we were out and
- 38:40Speaker 6: some of the bigger water, we were probably a half
- 38:44Speaker 6: mile from shore, maybe closer than that. And I said, Steve,
- 38:49Speaker 6: we have a wreck right now, and go in the water.
- 38:52Speaker 6: Can I make it to that shore swimming? And he
- 38:55Speaker 6: was like, no, probably not. And it was kind of
- 38:59Speaker 6: arising to me because you feel like adrenaline.
- 39:03Speaker 4: The current is so strong, dude.
- 39:05Speaker 6: And you'd and you'd make it, but the water's so
- 39:07Speaker 6: cold you'd just lock up before you got there.
- 39:11Speaker 1: When we were diving scallop, just to give you sense
- 39:13Speaker 1: of the current. So when we were diving scallops the
- 39:15Speaker 1: other day, I had a spot that I was diving
- 39:19Speaker 1: down to that I was marking because it was about
- 39:23Speaker 1: it was like at a two o'clock position, about twenty
- 39:26Speaker 1: five yards off the bottle of the boat, the boats
- 39:29Speaker 1: anchored thirty feet of water. I would dive down, hit
- 39:37Speaker 1: the bottom and then ride the current, looking so it's
- 39:42Speaker 1: an eighteen foot skiff. I'm twenty five yards up in
- 39:48Speaker 1: a one minute dive. When I pop up, I'm back
- 39:52Speaker 1: of the stern. Really weep.
- 39:56Speaker 6: You could have swum, you could have swam against the fins. Yeah,
- 40:00Speaker 6: but where you're talking about that shoreline, you're talking about
- 40:04Speaker 6: the current runs parallel to that short line. It just
- 40:08Speaker 6: takes you down theh So you would have a hard
- 40:10Speaker 6: time getting on an incoming tide to be a lot
- 40:12Speaker 6: better than an outgoing tide.
- 40:14Speaker 1: But I'm just saying, yeah, like likely likely not in
- 40:17Speaker 1: fifty degree water. I've got a little bit once we
- 40:20Speaker 1: get first without a survival colt. But we you know,
- 40:22Speaker 1: we used survival colts. But the kids were talking about
- 40:25Speaker 1: he hit a he hit a it's crazy, he hit
- 40:27Speaker 1: a tree caught this. No, he had a tree that
- 40:32Speaker 1: had snapped off on top and the tree was oriented
- 40:34Speaker 1: vertically in the water, root wad and everything. Wow, And
- 40:39Speaker 1: the end of the tree was was bobbing up and
- 40:42Speaker 1: down at the surface. The tree was standing upright in
- 40:45Speaker 1: the water. Huh, So you would have seen nothing. No,
- 40:50Speaker 1: gashed a hole in his thing. He was able to
- 40:52Speaker 1: swim to the beach his march, but it was like
- 40:53Speaker 1: a warm sunny day. He gashed a hole in his boat,
- 40:57Speaker 1: had a full on, full survival suit, made it to
- 41:01Speaker 1: the beach, walked up to Loggin Road. I wouldn't have
- 41:05Speaker 1: known what a Mustang suit was.
- 41:07Speaker 6: So these survival coats are basically it's like a jacket
- 41:10Speaker 6: with a zipper and pockets, but it's a it's a
- 41:13Speaker 6: flotation device.
- 41:15Speaker 1: Yeah, Mustang is like the maker. It's a brand. Yeah,
- 41:18Speaker 1: Mustang is a leading maker of survival coats. Yeah, there
- 41:22Speaker 1: are other brands.
- 41:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 41:25Speaker 7: And it floats you in, insulates you.
- 41:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 41:28Speaker 1: Picture of life jacket with a with sleeves.
- 41:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:32Speaker 6: Hey, when we get when we get more, I don't
- 41:34Speaker 6: want to give away the bear stuff.
- 41:36Speaker 1: Full of a current.
- 41:38Speaker 6: I've got a current thing about the about being having
- 41:42Speaker 6: a sense of being pulled out.
- 41:44Speaker 1: Oh so point being before I was before I got
- 41:47Speaker 1: distracted there. What I was getting at was it's dangerous
- 41:51Speaker 1: riding around a skiffing your waiters.
- 41:52Speaker 4: Yeah, it's just bear it a mine.
- 41:55Speaker 1: Where are you're maybe put your Mustang colde on so
- 41:58Speaker 1: you counteract, Wait, just your legs and fall off.
- 42:01Speaker 4: Uh so.
- 42:05Speaker 1: Oh it's so good for like it's just a great
- 42:07Speaker 1: way to cause you. You don't have to think about
- 42:09Speaker 1: where you're getting out. You can't shoot from a boat.
- 42:12Speaker 1: I remember one time we lost the bear. The bear
- 42:17Speaker 1: was going on the beach and went up in the timber.
- 42:18Speaker 1: We pulled up and my buddy Ryannie. We pulled up
- 42:22Speaker 1: and I'm like, well, I'm gonna wail on a predator call.
- 42:26Speaker 1: And I started wailing on that predator call. And that
- 42:28Speaker 1: bear looked like I was going to get in the
- 42:29Speaker 1: boat with us when he come back out of the timber.
- 42:33Speaker 1: But we're pull pulled up on a steep thing, and
- 42:36Speaker 1: I said, you can't shoot from a boat.
- 42:38Speaker 4: So I was like, get out of the boat. Get
- 42:39Speaker 4: out of the boat so he could shoot it.
- 42:42Speaker 1: It's too deep. One who cares? But two had you
- 42:48Speaker 1: had waiters on, whoop, let's jump right in. Yeah, So
- 42:52Speaker 1: I like to hunt in waiters. One day, I was
- 42:55Speaker 1: sitting there years ago, and I never took action on it.
- 42:59Speaker 1: It's just one of those thought I had. I was
- 43:02Speaker 1: looking at some bear or another and I was thinking, man,
- 43:05Speaker 1: if I had my wet suit, I would just swim
- 43:10Speaker 1: up to that bear. No problem in a wet suit.
- 43:13Speaker 1: He would just think it was a seal coming. I
- 43:18Speaker 1: mentioned this to Clay, and Clay said, I'm gonna do
- 43:20Speaker 1: that with my boat. That's about the way it happened.
- 43:25Speaker 1: So Clay got himself a seven mil wet suit, five
- 43:29Speaker 1: mil with a one liner. Is that what you did? Yeah,
- 43:32Speaker 1: Our friends over at rob Allen made him a suit.
- 43:35Speaker 1: Did you do the custom measurements? Yeah, forty two measurements. Man,
- 43:38Speaker 1: it gets real personal.
- 43:42Speaker 6: That she measurements of every circumference.
- 43:47Speaker 1: On my body.
- 43:48Speaker 3: I did the same thing.
- 43:50Speaker 1: So got a five mil suit with a one mill liner,
- 43:53Speaker 1: and bought a little teeny pool toy boogie board.
- 43:58Speaker 6: I hate it, like a like a thirty inch very
- 44:01Speaker 6: cheap fore and made, you know, a little boogie board
- 44:07Speaker 6: from some box store, you know, And it had all
- 44:10Speaker 6: the beach colors on top, and it was kind of
- 44:12Speaker 6: like a scaly black on the bottom. And I spray
- 44:14Speaker 6: painted a little camo on top because that's what my
- 44:18Speaker 6: bow floated on. So I drilled two holes up through
- 44:22Speaker 6: the it was just dirofoam and put a piece of
- 44:25Speaker 6: hay string through the holes and I would do just
- 44:29Speaker 6: like a little slip knot over the handle of the
- 44:32Speaker 6: bow to sinch it down.
- 44:34Speaker 1: I feel you should have gone bellcross trap.
- 44:37Speaker 6: Yeah, it probably would have been better, Probably would have
- 44:39Speaker 6: been better painted a seal's face on the front. Yeah, yeah,
- 44:44Speaker 6: we're seeing a lot of seals up here. Hey, can
- 44:46Speaker 6: I can I describe the land features of why this
- 44:50Speaker 6: is significant?
- 44:51Speaker 4: Oh? Why it matters?
- 44:52Speaker 6: I mean because I don't think it would be. It
- 44:54Speaker 6: wasn't evident to me here in you tell why this
- 44:58Speaker 6: would be effective. It was actually more effective than I
- 45:03Speaker 6: thought it would be. I was envisioning a lot of
- 45:05Speaker 6: like long straight shorelines. Yeah, that's what you think when
- 45:09Speaker 6: you think shorelines, But this is not that this. There
- 45:12Speaker 6: are uncountable islands and just much variation.
- 45:19Speaker 4: And in the swim around to a little day island.
- 45:23Speaker 3: Hop.
- 45:24Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, we watched multiple bears swim.
- 45:27Speaker 7: And there aren't too many. There aren't too many big
- 45:29Speaker 7: flats on the on the coastline. I mean, there's some
- 45:33Speaker 7: grass flats tucked away here.
- 45:35Speaker 1: And let me get let me go, let me give
- 45:36Speaker 1: another little detail. Got two kinds of black bears. You
- 45:39Speaker 1: got black bears eating beech ry, eating grass grass. You
- 45:45Speaker 1: got black bears eating muscles and crabs on a low tide,
- 45:50Speaker 1: you know, and the and the and like the waiter
- 45:54Speaker 1: strategy is good for either. But we're talking about we're
- 45:58Speaker 1: talking about bears that are in the rocks.
- 46:01Speaker 6: So the first day that I was here, we weren't
- 46:04Speaker 6: quite ready to commit. Randall was hunting and that y'all
- 46:06Speaker 6: had an incredible hunt, and I was in my waiters.
- 46:09Speaker 1: Randall kills a.
- 46:09Speaker 6: Bear, and we can talk about that later. I got
- 46:13Speaker 6: in and we saw another bear. Well, we already had
- 46:15Speaker 6: Randall's bear in the boat. And I'm wearing waiters and
- 46:17Speaker 6: I stalk a bear and I'm bow hunting. I stalk
- 46:20Speaker 6: a bear along the edge, along the edge, trying to
- 46:25Speaker 6: go to a bear, and everything was good until I
- 46:30Speaker 6: got to a big rock that jetted out into the
- 46:33Speaker 6: water where it was real deep out on the edge
- 46:35Speaker 6: of the rock, and so I couldn't get around it
- 46:38Speaker 6: with my waiters without you know, getting way over them.
- 46:42Speaker 6: And so the waiters are good to a point, like
- 46:45Speaker 6: most of the time a waiter would get you. And
- 46:49Speaker 6: the thing about and this is if you're trying to
- 46:52Speaker 6: get within bow range of these bears, you're not walking
- 46:55Speaker 6: on soft ground.
- 46:55Speaker 1: You're walking on rocks.
- 46:56Speaker 4: And it's loud in barnacles.
- 46:58Speaker 6: Barnacles muscles very loud. So if you have waiters or
- 47:02Speaker 6: in you know, a wetsuit. The water is silent. There
- 47:06Speaker 6: was a bear the first day. That bear was feeding
- 47:08Speaker 6: on muscles and I was in the water with my waiters.
- 47:11Speaker 1: Can I interject from here, because it is the detail
- 47:13Speaker 1: on express It's a steep bank and trees will fall
- 47:18Speaker 1: over and will fall into the ocean and muscles blue muscles,
- 47:23Speaker 1: which I'll point out as a circumpolar species, meaning there's
- 47:27Speaker 1: a band of latitude. There's a latitude band and that
- 47:31Speaker 1: the blue muscle, same species occurs all the way around
- 47:34Speaker 1: the globe. So when you go into a restaurant and
- 47:37Speaker 1: order muscles, that's what we're talking about. But they they
- 47:42Speaker 1: attached to pretty much anything. There's a tree that fell
- 47:45Speaker 1: over into the ocean and its limbs over the years
- 47:51Speaker 1: have become seeded with muscles. At high tide. At high
- 47:56Speaker 1: tide the tide goes out, we watch a bear come
- 47:58Speaker 1: under the tree and it's like he's pulling apples out
- 48:02Speaker 1: of a tree, but he's feeding on muscles over his head,
- 48:09Speaker 1: draped off tree limbs. Very cool.
- 48:13Speaker 4: Two different times Randall's bear was doing that when we
- 48:15Speaker 4: hit the beach, two different times.
- 48:17Speaker 1: Very These these bears are crunching these muscles.
- 48:19Speaker 6: Muscles, Yeah, they're they're like crunching them like acorns.
- 48:24Speaker 7: And they'll just sit down acres acrens.
- 48:28Speaker 1: That'd be a good show.
- 48:29Speaker 5: They'll hunker down, just the lay on the beach and
- 48:34Speaker 5: just eat all the muscles around them.
- 48:37Speaker 1: So, okay, I got a quick question about the South.
- 48:40Speaker 1: Seems relevant, totally unrelevant. I just noticed in the South,
- 48:45Speaker 1: you guys get two syllables out of the word hen.
- 48:50Speaker 4: Hen him.
- 48:55Speaker 1: They get two syllables out on a bunch of bears.
- 48:59Speaker 6: Hen. I don't know if I do that or not.
- 49:02Speaker 6: Some people do now, Ben, Ben and Ben.
- 49:08Speaker 1: Yeah, never mind the bears.
- 49:14Speaker 6: So the bears are feeding on these rocky outcroppings, and
- 49:18Speaker 6: there's a lot of little channels, and we decided with
- 49:23Speaker 6: the wet suit, you would be uninhibited in the water.
- 49:27Speaker 6: And we felt like that you we one thing that
- 49:30Speaker 6: we thought.
- 49:31Speaker 1: I got to come clean about. To go on though, Well,
- 49:34Speaker 1: go ahead. My case scenario had a lot to do
- 49:39Speaker 1: with rifle hunting, in that you can't shoot from a boat,
- 49:48Speaker 1: and the big boys don't like the sound of motors.
- 49:52Speaker 1: They learn what a motor sounds like, they don't like it.
- 49:55Speaker 1: Of course, there's a point at which you bear don't
- 49:57Speaker 1: want to hear outboard. My you use case scenario was
- 50:01Speaker 1: different than yours. Mine was how to extremely quietly get
- 50:08Speaker 1: to a point or island or whatever. How to extremely
- 50:13Speaker 1: quietly get to something where you could shoot from a
- 50:16Speaker 1: ways off. I wasn't picturing ass getting in there and
- 50:20Speaker 1: shaking hands with them like you were doing. Oh really,
- 50:24Speaker 1: what you thought I was going to get to the land? Stop?
- 50:27Speaker 4: No?
- 50:27Speaker 1: No, My original concept was wasn't shaking hands with them.
- 50:34Speaker 1: My original thing was just getting You could just slip
- 50:39Speaker 1: out of your boat instead of trying to beat your boat, right,
- 50:44Speaker 1: you could anchor and just slip out of your boat. Yeah, yeah, right.
- 50:50Speaker 1: And it wasn't like like following them in.
- 50:52Speaker 4: A wetsuit like you were doing. Yeah.
- 50:54Speaker 1: I wasn't thinking about that so much as I was thinking, like, man,
- 50:57Speaker 1: if I could get to that little point, all, yeah,
- 51:00Speaker 1: do that is, wait for him to get clear one
- 51:03Speaker 1: hundred yards, two hundred yards whatever the hell?
- 51:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 51:06Speaker 1: It wasn't quite like how you put it to use,
- 51:08Speaker 1: like you were putting the use like up close and personal.
- 51:11Speaker 4: Yeah, but go on.
- 51:13Speaker 6: Well, it ended up being incredibly effective, and the wet
- 51:19Speaker 6: suit thing was kind of interesting for me. This first
- 51:22Speaker 6: time I've had a wet suit and put it on,
- 51:25Speaker 6: and I was uncertain how cold this water would be,
- 51:28Speaker 6: how difficult it would be.
- 51:29Speaker 1: The first time you.
- 51:30Speaker 3: Put that wetsuit on, you had a slight panic.
- 51:33Speaker 6: Oh, man, no doubt I did. I got this wet
- 51:37Speaker 6: suit and I was sent this lubrication, which was a
- 51:41Speaker 6: powdered lubrication, and I thought I didn't read the instructions
- 51:45Speaker 6: on it. I thought it was like talcum powder. Like, Okay,
- 51:48Speaker 6: you put this wetsuit on with.
- 51:50Speaker 1: This dry how would you not? It was dumb, man.
- 51:54Speaker 1: There's no excuse a thing I'd find Like you're here,
- 51:58Speaker 1: we go just at it seems like you're just ambivalence
- 52:01Speaker 1: to directions. I'm guilty. I'm guilty, man, I'm guilty. I'm
- 52:12Speaker 1: just the fact you'd get a powder you've never seen
- 52:14Speaker 1: before and put it on your body. How do you
- 52:18Speaker 1: use it?
- 52:19Speaker 4: What it is?
- 52:20Speaker 1: Well, Clay gets a prescription from the drug store. He
- 52:22Speaker 1: probably takes the paper and just throws it out. Don't
- 52:25Speaker 1: tell me how to take this medicine out. I'm guilty.
- 52:29Speaker 1: I'm jake this medicine. How I please and when I please?
- 52:32Speaker 1: And so I'm putting this wetsuit.
- 52:34Speaker 6: On and I get it over my head and I'm like, man,
- 52:38Speaker 6: this is hard. And I finally get both my arms
- 52:41Speaker 6: in it and I got my head is choking me
- 52:44Speaker 6: to death, and I literally start to have a panic
- 52:47Speaker 6: attack because I can't get it off, and I call
- 52:50Speaker 6: my wife and I'm like, I'm like pulling it out
- 52:53Speaker 6: for my neck, and I say, when I go down
- 52:56Speaker 6: like trying to get under it, just pull it off
- 52:58Speaker 6: my back as hard as I was, literally like my
- 53:02Speaker 6: heart was pounded.
- 53:03Speaker 1: She thought I was going to pass out.
- 53:04Speaker 4: It was.
- 53:05Speaker 6: It was bad, and I was slightly and I didn't
- 53:08Speaker 6: have time to it was like the day before we came,
- 53:11Speaker 6: you know, and so I didn't put it on until
- 53:13Speaker 6: the first day. And actually that first day when it
- 53:16Speaker 6: was choking up on me, even while we were in
- 53:17Speaker 6: the boat, I was it made me like physically nervous
- 53:22Speaker 6: having that thing on.
- 53:22Speaker 3: Yeah, you kind of brought you back to you, Yeah,
- 53:25Speaker 3: I was.
- 53:25Speaker 6: I was like pulling it down and I actually was like, man,
- 53:28Speaker 6: I wonder if I can do this or not. And
- 53:30Speaker 6: then finally, after a while, you just get used to it.
- 53:42Speaker 6: The wet suit was an incredible way to get get
- 53:45Speaker 6: close to these bears. And we had multiple wet suit stalks.
- 53:51Speaker 6: So what happens is you see a bear from a
- 53:53Speaker 6: long ways away and then you bowte in and get
- 53:57Speaker 6: to a place where they can't see you, get out
- 53:59Speaker 6: of the boat, and then and me and dirt. Dirt
- 54:01Speaker 6: was when they people would be able to see this.
- 54:02Speaker 1: At some point.
- 54:03Speaker 6: He was filling with an underwater camera and a GoPro
- 54:06Speaker 6: and some stuff, and we would we would swim, usually
- 54:10Speaker 6: staying close to the shore and try to come in
- 54:14Speaker 6: down wind to the bear, which we thought that being
- 54:16Speaker 6: under almost underwater would would cover our sin.
- 54:19Speaker 1: We had bears smell us if you did mask and
- 54:24Speaker 1: snorkel not gonna smell you, but don't smell your breath.
- 54:29Speaker 1: That's I mean, that's all they were smelling anyway. And
- 54:31Speaker 1: you put some tic TACs down that snorkel.
- 54:34Speaker 4: Bears love tic tacks.
- 54:38Speaker 1: No, So I mean, do you want me to tell
- 54:40Speaker 1: when we finally killed the bear?
- 54:42Speaker 4: Sure?
- 54:42Speaker 1: I feel like I want to add more color in here,
- 54:44Speaker 1: but no, no, let's go.
- 54:46Speaker 3: I thought that when when I first heard you were
- 54:49Speaker 3: going to have a wet suit, a boogie board with
- 54:53Speaker 3: your bow on it in salt water. You've never been
- 54:57Speaker 3: in a wet suit. You're from Arkansas. I was like, yeah, that.
- 55:04Speaker 1: Seth had the best observation. We were talking about I'm
- 55:07Speaker 1: wrong how bears comprehend stuff, and he said, the last
- 55:13Speaker 1: thing they'll be thinking, is it some hillbilly mark. That
- 55:17Speaker 1: is the last thing.
- 55:20Speaker 6: They're like, maybe some yuppie from California not thinking this. Yes,
- 55:29Speaker 6: there were a lot of There were a lot of variables,
- 55:31Speaker 6: the worst cases of California.
- 55:35Speaker 1: There are a lot of variables.
- 55:37Speaker 6: But these bears, I knew from Steve's observations of being
- 55:42Speaker 6: in the water with him that they were gonna be
- 55:45Speaker 6: pretty much oblivious to things coming from the water. And
- 55:49Speaker 6: that's like deep biology, that there's just not danger on
- 55:54Speaker 6: the water. They hear a sound on the shore, they
- 55:57Speaker 6: hear a rock pop on the shore, they're gonna be gone.
- 56:00Speaker 6: They're going to be alert. But from the water, we
- 56:03Speaker 6: knew that they weren't going to be that alert. And
- 56:05Speaker 6: there literally are seals swimming around all over the place,
- 56:09Speaker 6: and here we are in these black wet suits, camo wetsuits,
- 56:12Speaker 6: you know, with stuff pulled up over our head. We
- 56:14Speaker 6: look like seals. But you guys needed to do I
- 56:17Speaker 6: think that.
- 56:19Speaker 1: Like a little face paint, oh, might have made a
- 56:23Speaker 1: big difference. It is because the white face comes very pronounced,
- 56:27Speaker 1: a little grease on your face. You might even look
- 56:30Speaker 1: like totally you might have got it. We we I
- 56:34Speaker 1: tell you. I saw where a black bear killed a
- 56:36Speaker 1: seal here.
- 56:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 56:37Speaker 1: Yeah, because they when the salmon are in. This is
- 56:40Speaker 1: quite a ways out from here, but when the salmon
- 56:42Speaker 1: are in, the seals will go right up in the creeks.
- 56:46Speaker 1: And my theory is some bear standing there sleeping in
- 56:49Speaker 1: the grass whatever. And also it's like, you gotta be
- 56:51Speaker 1: kidding me, that's a seal and he had skinned that seal.
- 56:56Speaker 1: It was just the seals hide. Wow, he emptied it
- 56:59Speaker 1: out like a sack.
- 57:02Speaker 3: Didn't like dine.
- 57:03Speaker 6: I was envisioning a bear like trying to get in
- 57:07Speaker 6: the water. You know, you think of all the scenarios.
- 57:09Speaker 6: I just felt like you could get away from a
- 57:11Speaker 6: bear in the water. I don't think they're that agile
- 57:14Speaker 6: in the water.
- 57:15Speaker 4: They don't hesitate to swim. Man.
- 57:17Speaker 6: Two different times when we were out in a channel,
- 57:20Speaker 6: we were in this like cluster of islands and two
- 57:24Speaker 6: kind of peninsulas that came together, and so there's like
- 57:28Speaker 6: a braid of channels. Two different times we were in
- 57:31Speaker 6: the water with a bear that was swimming across the channel.
- 57:34Speaker 6: You know, a couple, you know, two hundred yards from us,
- 57:37Speaker 6: but they looked like a beaver from water level. Looked
- 57:39Speaker 6: like a beaver going across the water, and then it'd
- 57:41Speaker 6: get out and it'd be this bear.
- 57:43Speaker 4: Yeah, but no, So.
- 57:44Speaker 6: When we finally I think we've covered all the bases
- 57:48Speaker 6: here of why we were doing it.
- 57:50Speaker 1: Scent sound getting close.
- 57:53Speaker 6: I mean I had shots at thirty and forty yards
- 57:57Speaker 6: all day stalking on the land, and that's a good shot.
- 58:03Speaker 6: I mean, a guy that's pretty decent with the bow
- 58:05Speaker 6: can take that shot. But I've also bow hundred enough
- 58:09Speaker 6: to know that thirty plus yards with a bow on
- 58:12Speaker 6: any animal, maybe other than an elk that has a
- 58:16Speaker 6: kills on the size of a beach ball, there's just
- 58:18Speaker 6: a lot that can happen, and I.
- 58:19Speaker 1: Like to get inside. I want to be I wanted
- 58:22Speaker 1: to be twenty yards.
- 58:22Speaker 3: From a bear. I think it's important to note here
- 58:25Speaker 3: you want to put a kill shot on those things
- 58:28Speaker 3: because if they go up into that thick, wet, nasty stuff.
- 58:34Speaker 1: It is the worst stuff in the world to try
- 58:36Speaker 1: to blood trail on. Yeah, it's just moss. Moss, not
- 58:40Speaker 1: like a forest floor of like fallen leaves.
- 58:45Speaker 6: Mm hmm.
- 58:45Speaker 1: It's it's heavily vegetated moss that doesn't show blood good.
- 58:51Speaker 7: Yeah, And depending on where the tide's at, they have
- 58:54Speaker 7: like ten yards and then they're just disappeared.
- 58:56Speaker 6: Yeah. Yeah, So I didn't want to take a marginal shot.
- 59:00Speaker 6: I had some shots at other bears at forty ish
- 59:05Speaker 6: without the wet suit, and I didn't. I just was like, man,
- 59:08Speaker 6: I don't want to take it. And h and again
- 59:10Speaker 6: I can hit a target all day at forty. But
- 59:13Speaker 6: the here's my tide, my tide story. I don't even
- 59:17Speaker 6: think I told you this. Dirt and I were on
- 59:19Speaker 6: a small island with a channel that at low tide
- 59:22Speaker 6: was probably forty yards wide.
- 59:25Speaker 1: To get to the main part of land.
- 59:28Speaker 6: And we see this bear like two hundred yards away
- 59:30Speaker 6: on the shore from our island, and we're gonna swim
- 59:36Speaker 6: this channel, this forty yard channel as the tide's coming out,
- 59:40Speaker 6: it's starting to get low tide, and the wind's blowing
- 59:43Speaker 6: pretty good, and we don't have flippers on because we've
- 59:46Speaker 6: decided that we want to be more mote. We've got
- 59:48Speaker 6: crocs over the feet of our wet suit and no snorkel,
- 59:53Speaker 6: no goggles or anything, and I'm pulling the.
- 59:55Speaker 4: Boogie board and.
- 59:59Speaker 6: We dive off this kind of like deep front, like
- 1:00:01Speaker 6: there's not a bottom, like you pretty much just jump
- 1:00:04Speaker 6: off the edge of a rock almost into water you
- 1:00:08Speaker 6: can't touch in and man, I got about four you know,
- 1:00:12Speaker 6: just doggy paddle strokes out there, and it kind of
- 1:00:16Speaker 6: starts taking you like out to sea.
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: I mean, that's what it felt like.
- 1:00:20Speaker 6: It really wasn't that dramatic, But to me, I was
- 1:00:23Speaker 6: very cognizant that I am not going in the direction
- 1:00:25Speaker 6: I'm swimming, and I thought, dang, this isn't gonna be cool.
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: But it's like a full on river basically.
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:00:34Speaker 6: But by the time that little section was short though,
- 1:00:38Speaker 6: it was like ten yards. And then once I got
- 1:00:40Speaker 6: out in the middle, it kind of calmed down and
- 1:00:43Speaker 6: I could actually swim the direction I was wanting to go,
- 1:00:45Speaker 6: but the bear was two hundred yards away around the corner.
- 1:00:48Speaker 6: We get out into the middle of the channel dirt
- 1:00:50Speaker 6: and I are just like floating, just like bobbing, and
- 1:00:53Speaker 6: here comes the bear. We didn't know it was going
- 1:00:55Speaker 6: to come our way. It comes around the corner and
- 1:00:57Speaker 6: we're in clear view of this bear on the shore
- 1:01:02Speaker 6: and it never even looks at us.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: So why you need a snorkel mask though too.
- 1:01:06Speaker 6: The wind's good though, and but now we float down
- 1:01:11Speaker 6: and just kind of slow swim watching the bear. I mean,
- 1:01:13Speaker 6: it's like within bow range of us now, and there's
- 1:01:17Speaker 6: just it was a perfect scenario because there was a
- 1:01:19Speaker 6: rock about half as big as a car that was
- 1:01:22Speaker 6: right on the edge. I get in behind that rock
- 1:01:25Speaker 6: and I didn't even have my release on yet. Untie
- 1:01:28Speaker 6: the bow, Untie the haystring, put my put my release on,
- 1:01:32Speaker 6: and the bear was so close. I didn't even use
- 1:01:34Speaker 6: my rangefinder. I didn't take it. I had a rangefinder
- 1:01:37Speaker 6: clipped onto the hay string. And man, if there's ever
- 1:01:40Speaker 6: a Vortex commercial, it's this.
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: Man.
- 1:01:44Speaker 6: I was using the Vortex rangefinder that more than once.
- 1:01:48Speaker 6: I saw it bobbing from the end of that boogie
- 1:01:51Speaker 6: board down in the salt water.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: It looked like a halibit jig bouncing.
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: Hanging off that bailer twine.
- 1:01:58Speaker 6: Yeah, man, I mean, and I would scoop it up
- 1:02:00Speaker 6: and I would range to see.
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: If it still works.
- 1:02:04Speaker 6: She still works, and I just put it back on
- 1:02:06Speaker 6: that boogie board and I'm serious it works today. I
- 1:02:10Speaker 6: checked it last night before I put it up, like, yeah,
- 1:02:13Speaker 6: she works. And anyway, I didn't even take the range finder,
- 1:02:15Speaker 6: got the bow and then we ducked back into the
- 1:02:17Speaker 6: water to about chest deep water. It kind of bent
- 1:02:20Speaker 6: down and just started going towards the bear, and the
- 1:02:23Speaker 6: bear was kind of in a cluster of rocks. I
- 1:02:26Speaker 6: estimated I was twelve yards from the bear and I
- 1:02:28Speaker 6: stood up and all I had to do was being
- 1:02:32Speaker 6: water deep enough so that a full drawed my bottom
- 1:02:34Speaker 6: cam didn't slap the water, you know, yep. So I
- 1:02:40Speaker 6: I just stood up and the winds in my face.
- 1:02:42Speaker 6: The bear never sees us, and I'm in you know,
- 1:02:44Speaker 6: about five deep waste deep water and shoot the bear.
- 1:02:49Speaker 6: Get a great shot the bear. You'll see it on
- 1:02:52Speaker 6: the video. The bear jumps like a marlin coming out
- 1:02:56Speaker 6: of the water.
- 1:02:59Speaker 4: For real.
- 1:03:00Speaker 6: The entry hole was on the was on the right
- 1:03:04Speaker 6: side of the bear, and the bear spun so fast
- 1:03:06Speaker 6: that I watched the arrow exit.
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: Like almost towards me.
- 1:03:11Speaker 6: And then the bear runs maximum of fifteen yards and
- 1:03:16Speaker 6: rolls down to the edge of the water, and it
- 1:03:19Speaker 6: wasn't a big bear. It was just you know, it
- 1:03:23Speaker 6: was just a bear that did it, did things right.
- 1:03:25Speaker 6: I really feel like you could probably target a big
- 1:03:28Speaker 6: bear and do good if you if I just wanted
- 1:03:31Speaker 6: like proof of concept, and.
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: There Randall got a big old boar.
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: Yeah yeah he did.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: But yeah, this is Steve's idea one hundred percent.
- 1:03:40Speaker 4: Well I had.
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: I mean I'm mostly joking. I mean I I my
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: idea up to the point that I never did.
- 1:03:45Speaker 6: It well, But I told, I told, it's more like,
- 1:03:49Speaker 6: you know what a fella could do. This is it
- 1:03:51Speaker 6: was a It was a perfect merger because I would
- 1:03:54Speaker 6: have never had even the thought cross my mind because
- 1:03:57Speaker 6: I didn't have the spear fishing tool skill set, Like
- 1:04:01Speaker 6: I would have never gone out on my own and
- 1:04:04Speaker 6: got a wet suit and drew a pow tag.
- 1:04:06Speaker 7: You never dreamed of getting in that water.
- 1:04:09Speaker 6: Yeah, I wouldn't have known that you could have gotten
- 1:04:11Speaker 6: that water and not been eaten by a killer whale
- 1:04:15Speaker 6: like I. But so your your confidence in the wet suit,
- 1:04:19Speaker 6: and and then just me loving bear hunting and just
- 1:04:22Speaker 6: wanting to do something different.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: It was kind of like a perfect merger well, hunting
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: c cucumbers in wet suits. You know, you're working all
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: the edges, and you know, I mean, so you learn
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: just how nicely you can get along and how like
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: you know, just how you're not thinking about stealth, but
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: just how unbelievably stealthy it is.
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: It is just to be down in the water working
- 1:04:42Speaker 4: along the edge.
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: Yeah, and I know if a past experience, the way
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: in which uh, stuff floating just isn't as of a
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: high concern. They're they're just not quiet. Stuff floating is
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: not as alarming to them as is other stuff. Now
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: I say that, and just to really quickly touch on it,
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: we we spooked Randalls bear.
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: Uh approaching it. No motor running, yep, but yeah.
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: It was fid we got it was wide open and
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: it was only one what did I say, it was
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: one ninety It spooked one hundred ninety.
- 1:05:21Speaker 7: Yards, Yeah, something like that, and we were in the
- 1:05:24Speaker 7: canoe paddling.
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: Towards it, and at that point I knew we desperately
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: wanted to get it.
- 1:05:28Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, we we we spotted him from the skiff
- 1:05:34Speaker 7: out in the middle of the channel, and we're curious
- 1:05:37Speaker 7: enough to want to get a better look at him,
- 1:05:40Speaker 7: and ye.
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: See, I can't tell what I'm looking at tom close. Yeah, well,
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: and he was tough.
- 1:05:45Speaker 7: When we got about halfway from the skiff to the
- 1:05:47Speaker 7: to the shore, and he was he had kind of
- 1:05:50Speaker 7: moved so he was sitting on his haunches and looked
- 1:05:54Speaker 7: up at us, and it was like, right, then, that's
- 1:05:58Speaker 7: a bear that we're really sit in.
- 1:06:01Speaker 4: I was looking at one.
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: Well, I was looking at one one time, and I'm
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: still like looking at it, trying to assess. And it
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: was enough that I wanted to look at it more.
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: But I hadn't said shoot in a friend of mine
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: shot and it wasn't a big one.
- 1:06:15Speaker 4: He got mad at me.
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: But I was like, I never said shoot, I'm still looking.
- 1:06:19Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: In fact, when they're going off about deaf and meeks,
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: that wasn't prepared for it. But it's like, yeah, I
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: gotta look at him well, and we I mean I
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: got to look at him.
- 1:06:27Speaker 4: From a couple hundred yards away as well.
- 1:06:29Speaker 7: Like you know, the first night for a while we
- 1:06:31Speaker 7: saw three.
- 1:06:34Speaker 4: That all.
- 1:06:35Speaker 7: You know, each one of those I couldn't have said
- 1:06:38Speaker 7: one way or the other.
- 1:06:39Speaker 4: I got it.
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: Yeah, you're in a boat moving around yeah, you're.
- 1:06:42Speaker 7: I mean, even even with your binoculars up, you know,
- 1:06:45Speaker 7: it's so hard to get a clear picture of him.
- 1:06:47Speaker 7: And they're moving until they sit down. And they all
- 1:06:51Speaker 7: look pretty big when they're sitting there, squatted over eating muscles,
- 1:06:55Speaker 7: you know, just because of the way that their body
- 1:06:57Speaker 7: arranges itself. But when that one, he kind of turned
- 1:07:02Speaker 7: his head and looked straight at us, and.
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: Then I can see the configuration of its.
- 1:07:06Speaker 7: Ear, its ears stickings. I was, I turned around the
- 1:07:09Speaker 7: canoe and we're both nodding at each other.
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: Yeah, like one And people say, this isn't that. I
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: don't around here, I don't around here. I find this
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: to be true. Ears off to the side of the head,
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: the ears that looks small, peeled off to the side
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: of the head is a big bear. Yeah, yous look
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: pointy on top of the head is not.
- 1:07:30Speaker 6: And let me I gotta say what I want to
- 1:07:32Speaker 6: say something about that, because that's the thing that people
- 1:07:35Speaker 6: in general say about bears across North America. It's the ears.
- 1:07:39Speaker 6: And you're one hundred percent right. I mean here and
- 1:07:42Speaker 6: in a lot of places that is one hundred percent true.
- 1:07:46Speaker 6: But where I hunt in in the South, in Arkansas,
- 1:07:50Speaker 6: and Oklahoma. The biggest bear I've ever killed my life
- 1:07:53Speaker 6: had five inches of ear sticking off the top of
- 1:07:56Speaker 6: his head.
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: I mean straight off the top. I mean, it's just
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: a difference. I don't Yeah, I'm not saying it's always true.
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: But if all the things people are looking for, of
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: all the things you're looking at, it winds up being, uh,
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: it's an easy one. And then the other thing is
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: like that little triangle. Like if you go make a lot,
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: make a triangle where the top what do you call
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: the parts of a triangle? The top line of the
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: triangle is a line from base the ear to base
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: the ear, and then the point of that triangle is
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: the end of its nose. You want where it's not
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: pizza shaped. If that triangle is pizza shaped, it's small.
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: If that triangle winds up being what's kind of over
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: all the parts and sides equilateral, all the sides are
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: the same. If it's that kind of triangle, it's probably big. Yeah,
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: that's that's a good Anyways, he looked at us, and
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: I was like, god dah when he got it and
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: ran off. But one in I don't know what percent
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: we got out to the beach, Randall had the Phelps
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: predator called the fahn, and we talked about that Phelps
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: call that one. This is president.
- 1:09:14Speaker 6: He's got several. He's got a he's got a cub
- 1:09:17Speaker 6: in distress.
- 1:09:18Speaker 4: Call.
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: That's the one.
- 1:09:18Speaker 6: I have predator cub distress. Yeah, and then maybe a
- 1:09:22Speaker 6: fawn jack.
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: I think, no, no, once you have the cub distress,
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: I think it's the fawn.
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: The fawn. Yeah, either way. One in Well, let me
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: tell the story.
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: One time I was looking at a black brown and
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: grass flat and it vanished somewhere out in the grass flat,
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: or I thought went in the way.
- 1:09:41Speaker 4: I couldn't find it.
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: I knew it was on a grass flat. I get
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: to the grass flat, bears not there. I guess set
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: up where I got a good commanding view, and I
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: start weighling on the fawn distress. To my surprise, out
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: of the woods comes a black tail dough out of
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: the chimber across. He comes across the whole grass flat,
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: gets up to me, stomping, mad blowing, all pissed off,
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: and goes back and I'm like, well, that amount of
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: ruckus absolutely would have lured the bear in if he
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: was here. I stand up and move forward. And that
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: thing is right in front of me, still feeding on grass,
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: and a little cut didn't care me blowing that call,
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: the dope coming out of the woods, running around all
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: pissed off, and that bear never stopped feeding on grass.
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: That's how little it cared. And then the next one
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: will try to get in the boat with you. Yeah,
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: I think it's like one in ten, two and ten.
- 1:10:41Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not one and two.
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: No, it ain't one and three. No, well at it
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: ain't one.
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: It's like some number really care yea, and some number
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: don't care.
- 1:10:55Speaker 7: And at that point we couldn't see the bear. We
- 1:10:58Speaker 7: didn't have anything to lose.
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: And it's smoked it.
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: Yeah, and he smooked it visually, not smell had the window.
- 1:11:05Speaker 7: No, he was looking over he kept glancing back over
- 1:11:07Speaker 7: his shoulders. Sam a couple quick steps up and just
- 1:11:11Speaker 7: disappeared into the trees.
- 1:11:13Speaker 3: And and meanwhile we got some folks in the boats
- 1:11:17Speaker 3: watching all of this, myself, Clay, Sam, who else, Chris
- 1:11:23Speaker 3: or something or no, you guys are. But I was like, there,
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: I saw the bear spook and I even said, I
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: was like, that thing's not coming back. Little did I know,
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: little did I know you guys had that call.
- 1:11:38Speaker 6: It was awesome from our v We were quarter mile away,
- 1:11:42Speaker 6: basically out in the middle of this this inlet, and
- 1:11:47Speaker 6: I got my glass up and I think it's a
- 1:11:50Speaker 6: done deal, and you are about to come.
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: Back, and I hear the squall and I'm like, oh,
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: they're predatorcaling.
- 1:11:56Speaker 6: And man, that bear was. We could see this whole
- 1:12:00Speaker 6: cross section of this thing shoreline, you know, y'all bank
- 1:12:03Speaker 6: the short line, and where the bear went in the woods.
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: And he went in the woods.
- 1:12:07Speaker 6: Probably twenty five thirty yards and probably was just sitting
- 1:12:10Speaker 6: there because very quickly after you started blowing, I saw
- 1:12:14Speaker 6: black moving through the woods, coming towards you.
- 1:12:17Speaker 7: And the bow of our canoe was tucked up against
- 1:12:20Speaker 7: this hump of rock. So I got out of the
- 1:12:25Speaker 7: canoe and I'm kind of sitting there holding it. Steve's
- 1:12:28Speaker 7: in the canoe blowing on the call, and I'm I've
- 1:12:32Speaker 7: got like one foot on shore and one in the water,
- 1:12:35Speaker 7: just kind of crouched down looking down the beach, waiting
- 1:12:41Speaker 7: to see this thing pop out of the trees, and uh,
- 1:12:45Speaker 7: little you know, and all of a sudden, I'm sitting
- 1:12:48Speaker 7: there and I can hear Steve get excited, and I
- 1:12:52Speaker 7: hear him saying down the beach, down the beach. In reality,
- 1:12:58Speaker 7: he's saying in your face, in your face, which.
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: Isn't that much more discripsive was looking at his twelve
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: o'clock down the beach, and at is nine o'clock there's
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: a bear like standing there ere.
- 1:13:12Speaker 7: It was just out of my peripheral and I'm I'm
- 1:13:15Speaker 7: kind of between the canoe and this hump of rock,
- 1:13:19Speaker 7: and so Steve has another twelve feet or so of
- 1:13:23Speaker 7: or ten feet of perspective on the whole thing, and
- 1:13:27Speaker 7: I'm looking down and I don't see the bear. I
- 1:13:29Speaker 7: bring up my binoculars quick. I put him down, and
- 1:13:32Speaker 7: I look over my shoulder over my right shoulder to
- 1:13:35Speaker 7: see where Steve's looking at. And I look over my
- 1:13:38Speaker 7: right shoulder and I see his head craned left, and
- 1:13:41Speaker 7: so I spin around, and I mean, I could not
- 1:13:45Speaker 7: see that thing until I turned and have my chin
- 1:13:48Speaker 7: over my left shoulder.
- 1:13:49Speaker 3: And this spaar is on top of you.
- 1:13:51Speaker 7: It's yeah, he's sitting right, I mean he's sitting over me.
- 1:13:54Speaker 4: Probably, Yeah, he's he's like ten feet above you.
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: Yeah, he's like.
- 1:13:59Speaker 7: Ten feet above me, just peering over the rock. He's
- 1:14:03Speaker 7: got this real you know, I can see from his
- 1:14:05Speaker 7: chest from his chest up, he's looking over the rock.
- 1:14:10Speaker 7: And uh, it happened real quick, but I got this.
- 1:14:16Speaker 7: I saw him for you know, a second or two
- 1:14:19Speaker 7: for it to register, and and that was like the
- 1:14:23Speaker 7: limits of his patients with this whole scenario. So he
- 1:14:26Speaker 7: hops back off the rock, and he turns and takes
- 1:14:30Speaker 7: a step to the right, and then he zags back
- 1:14:33Speaker 7: to the left. And at that point I shot him.
- 1:14:35Speaker 6: I thought it was key, like when he was running away,
- 1:14:39Speaker 6: you were calling and he made him stop.
- 1:14:41Speaker 7: Yeah, and he didn't go. Yeah, he paused for just
- 1:14:43Speaker 7: a second. I mean he didn't. It's not like he
- 1:14:45Speaker 7: turned around and was just you know, him his way.
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: When he ran out there another fifteen yards.
- 1:14:51Speaker 7: He yeah, he paused and turned around and stopped. And
- 1:14:55Speaker 7: that's when I shot him. And uh saw him kind
- 1:14:59Speaker 7: of over the next rock, and I followed him around
- 1:15:03Speaker 7: and he was just laying there.
- 1:15:05Speaker 3: That was fun to watch from a boat.
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: Oh, it was stressful.
- 1:15:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:15:09Speaker 6: We were just like, why isn't he shooting? It looked
- 1:15:12Speaker 6: like the bear was like an inch from you.
- 1:15:15Speaker 7: Oh man, I mean he was he was.
- 1:15:18Speaker 4: It felt like he was an inch from us. I was.
- 1:15:20Speaker 7: I was like at that point, it wasn't like he was,
- 1:15:23Speaker 7: you know, in front of us. I was between him
- 1:15:26Speaker 7: and the boat. I was between him and the canoe.
- 1:15:29Speaker 7: He came out.
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: He popped out like right over our shoulders.
- 1:15:33Speaker 5: He was close enough where I was zoomed into two
- 1:15:36Speaker 5: hundred mills on my on my lens, and I like
- 1:15:41Speaker 5: same thing. I was looking down the beach and all
- 1:15:44Speaker 5: of a sudden, like I looked to my left and
- 1:15:45Speaker 5: he's like right there, and like paying the camera over
- 1:15:48Speaker 5: quick and could not find him in the view finder.
- 1:15:52Speaker 4: Yeah, just because he was so close. I was too
- 1:15:54Speaker 4: zoomed in, said.
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: I don't want to be the bearer of bad news.
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: But there was about a three four inch warpneck connor tip.
- 1:16:00Speaker 5: Oh yeah, I'll.
- 1:16:03Speaker 4: Sitting here the other night looking at that.
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: That's probably high on his priority list.
- 1:16:08Speaker 4: There's Yeah, there's a long list.
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: Well, you'll be able to at some point or not.
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: You'll you'll be able to see all this we got,
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: we got, we got good.
- 1:16:18Speaker 4: It would be good. It'll be a good video.
- 1:16:20Speaker 3: I think it's gonna be a good Oh, it's.
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: Gonna be a good show, good episode, anything else, We're
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: gonna wrap it up.
- 1:16:26Speaker 4: Yeah, plans coming in here.
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: Tell them to listen to my Davy Crockett series on
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: Bear Grease. Uh yeah, go ahead, that's it.

- 1:16:38Speaker 6: series on Davy Crockett. You go, you learn a lot
- 1:16:42Speaker 6: about David Crockett.
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: But first listen to Clays. But if you if you
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: don't mind, first listening to Clay's thing about the education
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: Little Tree. Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:16:52Speaker 6: We did a series on Asa Carter and the education
- 1:16:56Speaker 6: a book called Education of a Little Tree. Lots of
- 1:16:58Speaker 6: twists and turns, dark twist and turn dark twisting turns.
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: And then if you still into it, listen to Crockett. Yeah, Crockett, whatever, Crockett.
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: I'm glad that you included why he didn't like Taters.
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: Oh it's in there, because that is the most harrowing
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: Tater story that about turned me off to Taters.
- 1:17:16Speaker 6: Yeah yeah, do you want to tell it?
- 1:17:20Speaker 4: No?
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, oh yeah, it is age.
- 1:17:26Speaker 6: I would imagine that this audio series, aside from a
- 1:17:30Speaker 6: just listening to a book on tape about Crockett, would
- 1:17:33Speaker 6: probably be the most comprehensive podcast series on Crockett.
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: I feel like it's gonna be four parts. Did you
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: include how he was born on a mountaintop in Tennessee,
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: Green Ed State and Land of the Free?
- 1:17:43Speaker 6: Yeah, we talk about it. We talk about how it's
- 1:17:45Speaker 6: not true you've been duped, Seth.
