- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Chuck Norris was chasing the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
- 0:05Speaker 3: The rex was not chasing the jeep. Murray Murry, you there.
- 0:09Speaker 3: You love sandwiches. Huh, Let's go to eighty.
- 0:13Speaker 4: It was bo.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Wow that Prime Time. Maybe I had a crush on
- 0:18Speaker 3: Betty Rubble.
- 0:19Speaker 2: I honestly, until after the segment ended and we went
- 0:22Speaker 2: to a commercial break, had no idea that Jonathan Coachman
- 0:25Speaker 2: was black.
- 0:25Speaker 3: He caught them the game last night, although they won
- 0:28Speaker 3: the game. You're listening just to Godson Company.
- 0:32Speaker 2: He is one of the great football minds in our industry.
- 0:35Speaker 2: I miss him dearly. He is laughing at me already.
- 0:37Speaker 2: I was trying to prop him up. Bill barnwall Is
- 0:39Speaker 2: with us, Why are you laughing? You are one of
- 0:41Speaker 2: the great football minds we have in this industry.
- 0:44Speaker 4: The mind, the mind element up. But if you say
- 0:47Speaker 4: a writer, at least there's content that's being put out, Yes,
- 0:51Speaker 4: but the mind element feels like it stretches beyond to
- 0:54Speaker 4: it like a different plane of ability there.
- 0:57Speaker 3: I don't know that I could really take credit for
- 1:00Speaker 3: too far? Is that what you're saying?
- 1:02Speaker 4: A tiny bit too?
- 1:04Speaker 2: Bill Barnwells with him, you can check him out all
- 1:06Speaker 2: over ESPN and of course ESPN dot com bill. Of
- 1:09Speaker 2: all the NFL teams this offseason, in your opinion, who
- 1:13Speaker 2: had the best offseason so far?
- 1:16Speaker 3: Who?
- 1:18Speaker 4: That's a good question, thank you, best overall off season? Yes,
- 1:24Speaker 4: it's easier to think of the teams who did not
- 1:26Speaker 4: have the best overall off season. The Ravens did not
- 1:30Speaker 4: have the best overall off season? Would it be crazy
- 1:35Speaker 4: to say the Colts? And I know that, Like I'm
- 1:38Speaker 4: a little nervous about that Daniel Jones contract. I don't
- 1:41Speaker 4: think I would want to take fifty million dollars out
- 1:44Speaker 4: of my bank account and handed Daniel Jones and say, hey,
- 1:48Speaker 4: play quarterback and stay healthy for seventeen games. But I
- 1:51Speaker 4: do feel like of the things they needed to add,
- 1:54Speaker 4: they needed to resign Alec Pearce, who's a super underrated player.
- 1:57Speaker 4: They needed to get Daniel Jones back under contract. This
- 1:59Speaker 4: organization had been through just a mess of quarterbacks over
- 2:04Speaker 4: the last almost decade now since Andrew Luck retired. Getting
- 2:07Speaker 4: Daniel Jones back on it to your deal, I think
- 2:10Speaker 4: it's generally a positive when you look at the numbers
- 2:13Speaker 4: for that contract. So Cults are the first team that
- 2:15Speaker 4: comes to mind, although I think there are not many
- 2:18Speaker 4: people who agree with me. Bill.
- 2:20Speaker 5: I'm checking out your article on ESPN dot com today
- 2:23Speaker 5: the twenty big remaining issues for the twenty contenders, and
- 2:28Speaker 5: it's just chock full of good information. But my question
- 2:30Speaker 5: for you is do you really have twenty contenders next year?
- 2:34Speaker 2: That's a great question, because if you have twenty contenders, Bill,
- 2:36Speaker 2: you know what you don't have.
- 2:37Speaker 4: You don't have one. I mean, okay, here's the problem.
- 2:42Speaker 4: If I start picking contenders, Yes, people are going to
- 2:45Speaker 4: be mad. If I make an arbitrary list of who
- 2:48Speaker 4: I think is going to contend, people are going to
- 2:50Speaker 4: get upset. So I try to pick the most bland
- 2:53Speaker 4: description of what a contender is. These are twenty four
- 2:56Speaker 4: and twenty five playoff teams, so if you made the
- 2:58Speaker 4: playoffs in the last two years, to me, you are
- 3:01Speaker 4: a contender.
- 3:02Speaker 5: You might as well just said everybody but the Jets
- 3:05Speaker 5: and Dolphins.
- 3:07Speaker 3: It's easy to figure out who's not a contender.
- 3:09Speaker 2: You're right, Oh, that is so good. I want the
- 3:14Speaker 2: list of twenty contenders. You can get them for me.
- 3:18Speaker 3: I got it right here.
- 3:19Speaker 2: I'll do you really, okay, So give me his top
- 3:21Speaker 2: contender who's his top contender.
- 3:23Speaker 3: He doesn't have him listed like that.
- 3:25Speaker 5: I just I just see the list of the teams
- 3:27Speaker 5: we can jump to.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Okay, all right, so we'll we'll get we'll get back
- 3:31Speaker 3: to in alphabetical order. Go ahead, all right, So give
- 3:33Speaker 3: them to me. I want him, go right now, give
- 3:35Speaker 3: him to me, all right.
- 3:36Speaker 6: Baltimore, Yes, Buffalo, Yes, Carolina? What that warms my heart
- 3:41Speaker 6: to see Carolina the division last year almost they were.
- 3:46Speaker 6: They had a lead on the Rams in the final
- 3:49Speaker 6: three minutes of a playoff game last year.
- 3:50Speaker 2: You're right, stop yelling at Super Bowl. Yes, I mean, listen,
- 3:53Speaker 2: you're one of the great football minds. Don't yell and
- 3:55Speaker 2: stop yelling at me.
- 3:58Speaker 3: All right, keep going from Carolina, please, Okay. After that,
- 4:01Speaker 3: we have Chicago, Yeah, we have Denver.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Yes, we have Detroit, Yes, Green Bay, r Houston.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Okay, Jacksonville Okay, Kansas City, Yes.
- 4:15Speaker 5: Both LA teams.
- 4:17Speaker 4: Jesus did pretty good so far.
- 4:22Speaker 3: Minnesota.
- 4:23Speaker 2: He's doing a good job of reading. I just don't
- 4:24Speaker 2: agree with most of them. I'm sorry, I understand, but
- 4:27Speaker 2: this is one of the great football minds that we have.
- 4:29Speaker 2: I have a hard time seeing the Vikings win a
- 4:31Speaker 2: Super Bowl. What's gonna happen here?
- 4:32Speaker 3: Bill?
- 4:33Speaker 4: With JJ McCarthy, he's gonna be gone. I mean, there's
- 4:37Speaker 4: no reason for Kyler Murray to sign in Minnesota unless
- 4:41Speaker 4: he's extremely confident he's gonna be the starter. And there's
- 4:44Speaker 4: no reason for Carson Wentz, who sat out most of
- 4:46Speaker 4: the offseason last year, to sign in Minnesota to be
- 4:49Speaker 4: the number three quarterback. J McCarthy is a sunk cost
- 4:52Speaker 4: at this point for the Minnesota Vikings. The GM who
- 4:55Speaker 4: drafted him is no longer in the building. They saw
- 4:58Speaker 4: him last year, they had to watch even practice. They
- 5:01Speaker 4: know he got hurt multiple times. There's no reason for
- 5:03Speaker 4: them to continue with the JJ McCarthy scherade. He's going
- 5:07Speaker 4: to be somewhere else. I would imagine in Los Angeles
- 5:10Speaker 4: with Jim Harbaugh. But just feel like he has to
- 5:13Speaker 4: find a new spot to mary developed behind a starter.
- 5:16Speaker 7: Bill, I'm seeing everybody zig and I'm trying to zag.
- 5:19Speaker 7: When the Max Crosby trade breaks down? Am I crazy?
- 5:22Speaker 7: With the additions that the Raiders made and adding Fernando Mendoza.
- 5:27Speaker 7: I can kind of talk myself into the Raiders sneaking
- 5:29Speaker 7: their way into the playoffs this year.
- 5:30Speaker 3: Oh, jeez, I could sneak by.
- 5:33Speaker 4: I can top myself into them being better than people think,
- 5:36Speaker 4: because when you improve dramatically, the two things that almost
- 5:40Speaker 4: always come along with that are upgrade a quarterback, upgrade
- 5:44Speaker 4: a head coach. You can make a case the Raiders
- 5:45Speaker 4: have done both this year if they draft Mendoza and
- 5:48Speaker 4: they hired Clint Kubiak as head coach. The problem is,
- 5:51Speaker 4: if you'd ask me last year, are the Raiders going
- 5:54Speaker 4: to be better? I would say yes, because they upgraded
- 5:56Speaker 4: the head coach and they upgraded a quarterback. And I
- 5:58Speaker 4: went ozer for two in those upgrades at head coaching
- 6:01Speaker 4: quarterback last year. So I've just been burned. I do
- 6:05Speaker 4: feel like there are a better team that people give
- 6:06Speaker 4: them credit for, but the schedule is difficult. Mendoza is
- 6:09Speaker 4: not gonna have a ton of help up front. I
- 6:11Speaker 4: think they're a year away from being a year away.
- 6:15Speaker 5: It's amazing that we're saying they upgraded a head coach
- 6:17Speaker 5: from an unknown commodity, from a guy who's probably headed
- 6:21Speaker 5: to the Hall of Fame as a head coach.
- 6:22Speaker 3: But yes, Bill, who are the best remaining free agents?
- 6:28Speaker 3: In your opinion?
- 6:31Speaker 4: Is it crazy to say that Kirk Cousins might be
- 6:35Speaker 4: one of the best remaining free agents. He's not a
- 6:38Speaker 4: terrible quarterback, and I mean, how many teams last year
- 6:42Speaker 4: had to turn to let's say, a Jared Didham in
- 6:46Speaker 4: the AFC Championship game woul That game had gone differently
- 6:49Speaker 4: if the Vikings had had, say le Broncos, had had
- 6:54Speaker 4: Kirk Cousins at quarterback. Potentially, I think some of the
- 6:58Speaker 4: edge rushers think Shian Clowney, Joey Bosa still available. You know,
- 7:03Speaker 4: just those guys who are gonna be They're gonna play
- 7:05Speaker 4: fifty five sixty percent of the stops, They're gonna get
- 7:07Speaker 4: seven or eight sacks, They're gonna take one absolutely insane
- 7:11Speaker 4: penalty in a playoff game, but they're gonna be overall
- 7:13Speaker 4: pretty solid pass rushers. I think that's gonna be an addition.
- 7:16Speaker 4: Taylor Decker, left tackle formerly of the Lions, who's a
- 7:19Speaker 4: free agent. Uh, just there's so many teams who again
- 7:22Speaker 4: need tackle help at some point during the season. Have
- 7:24Speaker 4: to imagine he's gonna get an opportunity. And then I
- 7:27Speaker 4: throw Deebo Samuel out there. We no, he set the
- 7:29Speaker 4: guy from five years ago, but incredible yack production. Year
- 7:34Speaker 4: after year. He's the Yak God. I just think all
- 7:37Speaker 4: these teams who want to throw short passes, want up
- 7:39Speaker 4: throw screens, want to play quick game, Deebo Samuel is
- 7:41Speaker 4: a really valuable player in those offenses. So some veterans,
- 7:44Speaker 4: which you typically linger in the market, but I do
- 7:46Speaker 4: see some guys who could make a difference in twenty
- 7:48Speaker 4: twenty six.
- 7:48Speaker 7: Bill, were you surprised with the return that the Dolphins
- 7:51Speaker 7: were able to get for Jalen Waddle because it feels
- 7:54Speaker 7: like the Dolphins are more likely to draft a number
- 7:57Speaker 7: one receiver than Jalen Waddle is to ever be comme
- 8:00Speaker 7: a number one wide receiver.
- 8:01Speaker 4: Oh strong, Well, he was for one year in Miami,
- 8:05Speaker 4: but that's one year out of like six or five.
- 8:08Speaker 4: At this point of his career, he's a good player.
- 8:11Speaker 4: And maybe it was a case of the Dolphins saying, hey,
- 8:14Speaker 4: we're not going to trade not only our best player left,
- 8:17Speaker 4: but probably the most popular player we have left on
- 8:20Speaker 4: this roster after all the other guys we cut, we're
- 8:23Speaker 4: traded away in the prior twelve months unless we get
- 8:26Speaker 4: a first round pick and more. I wonder if it
- 8:28Speaker 4: was just like a the Broncos felt like we have
- 8:30Speaker 4: to get this guy, and the Dolphins were not willing
- 8:32Speaker 4: to do anything less than what they got because if
- 8:35Speaker 4: they traded him for like a second round pick, it's almost,
- 8:37Speaker 4: you know, like that's the only guy left who people
- 8:40Speaker 4: have on their jerseys outside of Divide eight chan, you know,
- 8:44Speaker 4: in the stance. So I did think it was probably
- 8:46Speaker 4: a little more than I would have expected from the Broncos.
- 8:48Speaker 4: But it's a thirtieth pick in each round. They got
- 8:50Speaker 4: to swap a fourth round, which helps a little bit.
- 8:52Speaker 4: I feel like it was pretty fair in the big picture.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Which move did you like better? Tuwa to the Falcons
- 8:57Speaker 2: or Kyler Murray to the Vikings.
- 9:01Speaker 4: I would say Kyler to the Vikings because there are
- 9:03Speaker 4: a lot of crossing routes in that offense, a lot
- 9:05Speaker 4: of ISO stuff that Jefferson. I feel like that really
- 9:08Speaker 4: fits into what Kyler Murray does well. I just wonder
- 9:10Speaker 4: because the Vikings at Kevin O'Connell, who by the way,
- 9:12Speaker 4: is an extremely tall person, their offense is under center,
- 9:16Speaker 4: heavy play action. Kyler Murray wants to play at a shotgun,
- 9:19Speaker 4: wants to play at a pistol, needs to have some
- 9:21Speaker 4: space to see the entire field, so I want to
- 9:24Speaker 4: see what that offense looks like and how it's constructed.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Kind Of the same problem with to it in Cleveland,
- 9:28Speaker 4: where two wants to be in the shotgun and Kevin
- 9:31Speaker 4: Stefanski wants to be under center. But I do think
- 9:34Speaker 4: that Kyler Murray is a better player. I think he
- 9:36Speaker 4: has more upside. I think he has a higher ceiling,
- 9:39Speaker 4: and I think he's going to offer something in the
- 9:40Speaker 4: run game that the other Vikings quarterbacks they've had over
- 9:43Speaker 4: the years past.
- 9:44Speaker 8: If not.
- 9:46Speaker 3: What'd you make of Gino going back to the Jets.
- 9:50Speaker 4: Yeah, I love a reunion. Maybe I don't love this reunion,
- 9:55Speaker 4: but I love a reunion and Gino Smith has something
- 10:00Speaker 4: in the bag here. I just think the Jets don't
- 10:02Speaker 4: have the infrastructure to get what Gino Smith needs to
- 10:06Speaker 4: have happened. He needs better pass protection than what they have.
- 10:08Speaker 4: They lost both their starting guards and free agency. They
- 10:11Speaker 4: have one great receiver in Garrett Wilson I think is
- 10:13Speaker 4: legitimately a great receiver. They don't really have much else
- 10:17Speaker 4: to work with in the passing game. Bristol coming back
- 10:19Speaker 4: on the franchise tag or sorry, on the one year
- 10:22Speaker 4: deal does help, but it just feels like Gino has
- 10:25Speaker 4: to be in a perfect situation at this point to
- 10:28Speaker 4: be a league average or better quarterback. And we saw
- 10:30Speaker 4: with the Raiders last year when that offensive line was
- 10:32Speaker 4: a mess. Once brock Bauers got hurt, Geno couldn't compensate.
- 10:35Speaker 4: I kind of feel like that's gonna happen with the
- 10:37Speaker 4: Jets this year.
- 10:38Speaker 2: It's fairly amazing that he left that team, and when
- 10:41Speaker 2: he left, they had no infrastructure, and all these years
- 10:44Speaker 2: he's coming back and they still don't have that infrastructure.
- 10:46Speaker 2: I mean, the other worst organization in football, right, Yeah, And.
- 10:50Speaker 4: Well, the good news is over the course of the
- 10:52Speaker 4: insuing decade they also did not at any point have
- 10:55Speaker 4: the infrastructure ever a quarterback pick succeeds. They didn't get
- 10:57Speaker 4: it for like five years and then lose it. They
- 10:59Speaker 4: got breath for the entire decade.
- 11:02Speaker 7: Bill the two surprise teams last year, I think people
- 11:06Speaker 7: would agree on the Bears and the Patriots. Which team
- 11:10Speaker 7: do you think is more likely to take a step
- 11:12Speaker 7: back this year?
- 11:13Speaker 3: Wow?
- 11:17Speaker 4: I want to say both, but that's not a fair answer,
- 11:19Speaker 4: So I'm gonna give you one. I am going to
- 11:21Speaker 4: say Patriots because of the schedule difference this was not
- 11:26Speaker 4: just an easy schedule, although everyone knows it was an
- 11:29Speaker 4: easy schedule. By Pro Football Reference, this was the tenth
- 11:32Speaker 4: easiest schedule in the history of the National Football League,
- 11:36Speaker 4: which is a really high bar. Think about how many
- 11:39Speaker 4: years of football there have been, and this was a
- 11:41Speaker 4: historically easy schedule. Drake Bay played really well. They had
- 11:45Speaker 4: some incredible catch rates, which I don't think are going
- 11:47Speaker 4: to sustain. I think Drake Bay's efficiency is gonna drop
- 11:50Speaker 4: a bit. They're gonna play tougher teams. They're not gonna
- 11:51Speaker 4: be able to play from ahead quite as often. Their
- 11:54Speaker 4: run defense was a problem. They didn't play many teams
- 11:56Speaker 4: who got ahead and ran on them. But that's gonna
- 11:58Speaker 4: happen more often. Twenty twenty six and they were a
- 12:01Speaker 4: relatively healthy team, and I don't think that's going to
- 12:04Speaker 4: keep up. So they're gonna be good. I think they're
- 12:06Speaker 4: still going to be in the playoff mix. But I
- 12:08Speaker 4: would say up to the patriots of the team, I
- 12:10Speaker 4: have a little more concerns about heading into next season.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Tell you see what he did there.
- 12:13Speaker 2: This is why he's one of the great football minds
- 12:15Speaker 2: in America that we have in our industry.
- 12:17Speaker 3: Because the Patriots.
- 12:18Speaker 2: The only way they could take a step forward is
- 12:20Speaker 2: by getting back to the Super Bowl and winning it.
- 12:22Speaker 3: Yeah, yes, yes, you didn't even know you did. That's
- 12:25Speaker 3: what did you get?
- 12:26Speaker 8: Right?
- 12:26Speaker 4: The extra mind power? You know what they say, like
- 12:29Speaker 4: you only use ten percent of your brain. If I'm
- 12:32Speaker 4: one of the great football minds, I gotta be using
- 12:34Speaker 4: at least twelve percent. Eighty thirteen percent.
- 12:37Speaker 3: I use five. Malik Willis.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Are you as high on Malik Willis as everyone else
- 12:41Speaker 2: seems to be?
- 12:43Speaker 4: No, because he's throwing two guys like me at receiver
- 12:47Speaker 4: at this point in the offense. Though, I thought he
- 12:50Speaker 4: was really good in Green Bay, much better than I expected,
- 12:52Speaker 4: not just as a runner but as a pure dropback passer.
- 12:55Speaker 4: Heavy play action rate helped him a little bit. Got
- 12:57Speaker 4: to play from I had. I don't think I love
- 13:00Speaker 4: the idea of him playing from two touchdowns behind, which
- 13:02Speaker 4: I think is gonna happen quite a bit this year.
- 13:05Speaker 4: But he just needs guys. They just don't have playmakers
- 13:08Speaker 4: for him at receiver in that offense, so you assume
- 13:11Speaker 4: they're gonna draft somebody. I think they need two three
- 13:13Speaker 4: receivers out of this draft to give him leek willis
- 13:16Speaker 4: a shot of competing in twenty twenty.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Six, totally unnecessary shot at two two at Well?
- 13:20Speaker 4: I mean, what are you are? Do you represent mister Atwell?
- 13:26Speaker 4: Are you his agent? I mean that is that unreasonable
- 13:29Speaker 4: to say? This man got ten million dollars and he
- 13:31Speaker 4: wasn't even playing for the Rams by the end of
- 13:34Speaker 4: the regular season.
- 13:36Speaker 7: Bill, Now I'm imagining you running routes and your your
- 13:38Speaker 7: football receiver name is Bill Barne at Well.
- 13:43Speaker 3: So am I what a great target? He would be?
- 13:47Speaker 4: Two runs like a four to four forty. I run
- 13:51Speaker 4: like a fourteen to four to forty. So just add
- 13:53Speaker 4: a little bit more and I'll catch up with two
- 13:56Speaker 4: two Eventually.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Taylor wasn't terribly confident, n he wasn't jervy if it
- 14:02Speaker 2: landed well, I don't think it did.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Bill.

- 16:09Speaker 3: In New York, I'm just waiting for the mayor. I mean, wow,
- 16:23Speaker 3: I think he's ready to go right now. Hoyburg's ready
- 16:25Speaker 3: to go right now. The mayor, all right, let's bring
- 16:27Speaker 3: him off.
- 16:29Speaker 1: He's probably heard the intro.
- 16:30Speaker 3: It had to get in.
- 16:30Speaker 4: On this.
- 16:32Speaker 2: Drop the music I was Sam. We will pick it
- 16:35Speaker 2: up after Fred Hoiberg. What a treat does Marcus Smart
- 16:38Speaker 2: win a national championship?
- 16:39Speaker 3: I mean to get to Fred.
- 16:43Speaker 2: The mayor, Fred Hoiberg, the head coach of Nebraska, joining
- 16:46Speaker 2: us right now, right after a first round victory?
- 16:48Speaker 3: Here, coach, thank you for joining us. How are you good?
- 16:52Speaker 8: Good? How you guys doing doing great.
- 16:54Speaker 3: Congratulations to you, coach, big win for you.
- 16:57Speaker 8: Yeah, thank you. I'm really happy for our guys, proud
- 17:00Speaker 8: of them. You know, I'm not sure how much you
- 17:03Speaker 8: guys saw this, but it was the best neutral site
- 17:06Speaker 8: atmosphere I have ever been in. Our fan just absolutely
- 17:09Speaker 8: took over, and you know, when I went out for
- 17:11Speaker 8: the anthem, I really got emotional just seeing all the
- 17:14Speaker 8: red in the crowd, and you know, they really helped us,
- 17:18Speaker 8: really will us to that win, and we went on
- 17:20Speaker 8: a run. You know, just the roof blew off the place,
- 17:23Speaker 8: so it was it was incredible. Great to share that
- 17:25Speaker 8: with the fans and you know, hopefully continue on this journey.
- 17:28Speaker 10: Yeah, coach, I caught the beginning of the game right
- 17:30Speaker 10: before you started going on your run, and it felt
- 17:32Speaker 10: like there was a little bit of extra tension in
- 17:34Speaker 10: the air. Obviously the first tournament win for you guys
- 17:37Speaker 10: at stake. Did it feel bigger going in even before
- 17:41Speaker 10: you saw you know, the fans and everybody at that
- 17:43Speaker 10: site ready for you.
- 17:44Speaker 8: That's a great question. You know, I get the question
- 17:46Speaker 8: a lot. Do I bring it up? I don't have to.
- 17:49Speaker 8: There's been enough attention on it, and you know, it's
- 17:51Speaker 8: out there. Our guys read all about it, so they
- 17:53Speaker 8: know they know what's at stake. And you know, I
- 17:55Speaker 8: told them, I said, guys, listen, at the end of
- 17:57Speaker 8: the day, pressures of privilege. Is there pressure on us? Yeah,
- 18:00Speaker 8: but there's also pressure on Troy. And you know, for
- 18:02Speaker 8: us to go out there, it was all about we
- 18:05Speaker 8: had a disappointing game in Chicago against Purdue. Now, a
- 18:09Speaker 8: lot of that had to do with Purdue. They're absolutely
- 18:11Speaker 8: rolling right now and they cut down the net in Chicago.
- 18:13Speaker 8: But you know, it gave us a chance to reset
- 18:16Speaker 8: and get back to work and get back to who
- 18:18Speaker 8: we are and you know, the core values, and we
- 18:21Speaker 8: talked a lot about that going into this game. And
- 18:23Speaker 8: you know the importance of in these early ones. You know,
- 18:26Speaker 8: game started before noon here local time, is you know,
- 18:31Speaker 8: the team that gets off to the fast start generally
- 18:32Speaker 8: wins these games. But if it didn't happen, we had
- 18:35Speaker 8: to stay more emotionally stable than we did the last
- 18:39Speaker 8: time that we played, which was against Purdue. So you know,
- 18:42Speaker 8: I'm just I'm really thankful for the guys how they
- 18:44Speaker 8: prepared for this one. You know, Troy hit a couple
- 18:48Speaker 8: of tough threes, early in this one to build a
- 18:50Speaker 8: little bit of a lead, but we never panicked and
- 18:52Speaker 8: we got that thing going. Price Stanford it five threes
- 18:55Speaker 8: in the first half, and you know, they just kept
- 18:57Speaker 8: the heat and kept the pressure and kept their footing
- 18:59Speaker 8: the gas. So you know, just it's good to get
- 19:01Speaker 8: to this one behind us, and you know, now it's
- 19:04Speaker 8: about are you satisfied? And you know, one thing, I'm
- 19:07Speaker 8: confident our guys all year long, they have really been
- 19:10Speaker 8: good and resilient as far as putting big emotional either
- 19:13Speaker 8: wins or losses behind us. Got a film session tonight.
- 19:17Speaker 8: We talk a lot about next assignment. Our next assignment
- 19:19Speaker 8: is the film session. We got to be locked in coach.
- 19:22Speaker 10: If anybody had seen Pryce Sandford shoot for the first
- 19:25Speaker 10: time today, they thought to themselves, Wow, this might be
- 19:27Speaker 10: the best shooter in this tournament. Talk about just his
- 19:30Speaker 10: his shooting ability and just what he can do for
- 19:33Speaker 10: you guys with that you know, quick release, Well.
- 19:35Speaker 8: It's really cool. His brother Peyton is on a two
- 19:39Speaker 8: way with the Thunder and he was he was in
- 19:42Speaker 8: the gym. He scored his first NBA points last night
- 19:44Speaker 8: on the road and they sent him back and he
- 19:46Speaker 8: was able to be there to watch Price, you know,
- 19:48Speaker 8: go off the way he did today. And I'll say
- 19:51Speaker 8: this about our guys, they do an unbelievable job finding him.
- 19:53Speaker 8: I thought we did a great job on the glass,
- 19:56Speaker 8: and we didn't force it inside against length. We kicked
- 19:59Speaker 8: it out and really created some open looks. And then
- 20:03Speaker 8: are in transition. I thought we did a good job
- 20:05Speaker 8: finding him in transition as well. And that's what this
- 20:08Speaker 8: team has been all about. They've been very unselfish. We
- 20:11Speaker 8: had twenty assists and only six turnovers in this game
- 20:14Speaker 8: today and that was a huge factor in the win.
- 20:16Speaker 3: Coach.
- 20:17Speaker 2: College sports is so interesting right now, and I am
- 20:20Speaker 2: wondering because I think a lot of people looked up
- 20:22Speaker 2: and were surprised to see how good Nebraska was at basketball.
- 20:25Speaker 2: But Indiana dominates football, So why not Nebraska in basketball?
- 20:29Speaker 2: How did you build this thing so quickly?
- 20:32Speaker 8: Well, I'm not sure it was quick. You know, ear
- 20:36Speaker 8: seven now, and you know, we here's what we took
- 20:39Speaker 8: over the largest rebuild in the history of the Power five,
- 20:41Speaker 8: and we knew we were going to take some lumps.
- 20:43Speaker 8: And then year two was COVID. So those first two
- 20:45Speaker 8: years were you know, we're really tough. I think we
- 20:48Speaker 8: won seven games in each of those two years and
- 20:49Speaker 8: then it's steadily gone uphill from there. And we got
- 20:52Speaker 8: the right guys in this program. We got some local kids,
- 20:55Speaker 8: you know, I give Sam Grizel who is from Lincoln.
- 20:57Speaker 8: He transferred in for his senior years. Really when we
- 21:00Speaker 8: started slipping everything and you know, the culture got to
- 21:03Speaker 8: where it needed to be. You know, we got the
- 21:05Speaker 8: right guys to hold accountable the standards that we were
- 21:08Speaker 8: trying to live up to. And you know, we've had
- 21:10Speaker 8: a lot of guys that have just really bought into that.
- 21:12Speaker 8: So it's just you know, this team in particular, it's
- 21:14Speaker 8: been such a fun team to be around because there's
- 21:17Speaker 8: no agendas with this group. There's no h you know,
- 21:20Speaker 8: there's no distractions. They come on time, they take care
- 21:24Speaker 8: of their academics, you know, off off coards. There's been
- 21:27Speaker 8: no incidents. So it's just been you know, when you
- 21:29Speaker 8: when you have a group like that, it makes our
- 21:31Speaker 8: job as coaches a hell of a lot easier.
- 21:33Speaker 10: Fred March is all about, you know, the close games
- 21:36Speaker 10: like even the first game that tipped off today ended
- 21:38Speaker 10: up being a two point game there, but where they
- 21:40Speaker 10: blow out like you guys experienced today, how much confidence
- 21:43Speaker 10: does that really give you going forward? You can move
- 21:45Speaker 10: past the first win and say to your team, look
- 21:48Speaker 10: how well we can perform when we're on our game.
- 21:51Speaker 8: Yeah, and we'll and listen, we'll play a completely different
- 21:53Speaker 8: team next game, with different schemes offensively and defensively. And
- 21:57Speaker 8: that's what I'm talking about getting over you know this
- 22:00Speaker 8: one quickly. But our guys have done it all years,
- 22:03Speaker 8: so there's no reason to believe that that won't continue.
- 22:07Speaker 8: And you know, we need a film session, we'll talk
- 22:09Speaker 8: about the game plan, we'll put it in tomorrow, we'll
- 22:11Speaker 8: get a new practice here in Oklahoma City, and it's
- 22:14Speaker 8: all about going out and executing. But I thought our
- 22:16Speaker 8: guys really played with discipline today and you can see
- 22:19Speaker 8: that with the turnover margin. I thought nineteen to three
- 22:22Speaker 8: on second chance points, seventeen to five in points off turnovers,
- 22:26Speaker 8: and then twenty six to ten points in the paint.
- 22:28Speaker 8: And you know, that's what it's all about. We help
- 22:29Speaker 8: them to twenty six percent shooting in the second half
- 22:32Speaker 8: or twenty four actually, and if you do that consistently,
- 22:35Speaker 8: that's what that's the formula for advancing.
- 22:37Speaker 3: In March, coach.
- 22:39Speaker 2: I coached my daughters. I coached her high school travel
- 22:42Speaker 2: across team. She's now playing at Northwestern. It's the Indiana
- 22:46Speaker 2: of women's college lacrosse. But I am wondering, here are
- 22:50Speaker 2: their challenges with coaching your own kid.
- 22:54Speaker 8: You know what, he's made it easy. And he came here.
- 22:57Speaker 8: He was in a high school the COVID year, so
- 23:01Speaker 8: he really wasn't evaluated and it was a tough year
- 23:03Speaker 8: for all those kids that were seniors during COVID because
- 23:06Speaker 8: you know, they just couldn't get evaluated properly. And he
- 23:09Speaker 8: went on a couple visit for elite camps the previous
- 23:12Speaker 8: year and did really well, and I think was on
- 23:14Speaker 8: the verge of getting a couple offers. But then they
- 23:16Speaker 8: had players and took advantage of the COVID year. So
- 23:18Speaker 8: he just said, you know, let me come and walk
- 23:20Speaker 8: on and see where it goes. And if he developed,
- 23:23Speaker 8: maybe he would go to a lower level. But you know,
- 23:25Speaker 8: he took advantage of when we had two season an
- 23:28Speaker 8: injuries Juan Gary Emmanuel Vandemouth both went down in the
- 23:32Speaker 8: middle of the year, and then that's what gave him
- 23:34Speaker 8: the chance. And he worked so hard every day, got
- 23:37Speaker 8: in the gym, and that's what, you know, allowed him
- 23:40Speaker 8: to play well and then really earn a spot in
- 23:42Speaker 8: rotation from that point on. But he's been a part
- 23:44Speaker 8: of the turnaround. He saw this thing when it was
- 23:47Speaker 8: at its lowest, and you know, I'm really proud of
- 23:48Speaker 8: how he's helped us this get this thing flipped.
- 23:53Speaker 2: Coach, you are my final four pick. I selected you
- 23:55Speaker 2: out of the South bracket. I wrote it down in
- 23:57Speaker 2: pen I can't erase it. So if you go to
- 23:59Speaker 2: the Final four, I will see you in Indianapolis. Yes,
- 24:05Speaker 2: all right, thank you, congratulations to you. I know it's
- 24:08Speaker 2: a busy time. We appreciate a business trip. Tell them
- 24:11Speaker 2: not to sit around and watch basketball. Get in the
- 24:13Speaker 2: film room. Let's go, right, coach, we're going to the
- 24:15Speaker 2: final four, me and you.
- 24:17Speaker 8: You got it. Guys, thanks so much, thank you.
- 24:19Speaker 3: We want nothing to do with that.
