- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday, it's the 9th of
- 0:16the 9th and we are well and truly into my favourite month of
- 0:19the year, September. Isn't it glorious?
- 0:22Oh, it's springtime, it's my birthday month, anniversary
- 0:25month, Father's Day month. All the good things of the year
- 0:27come to me in this one month. So I'm loving it and I hope
- 0:31you're going well too. And we are getting back together
- 0:35to get our heads together, dive back into God's word and hear
- 0:39this continuing journey of the church building.
- 0:42And we now firmly begin to enter the part of the book where we
- 0:47follow Paul and Paul becomes the the main conduit that Luke
- 0:52writes about as he tracks Jesus work building his church in this
- 0:57this time and place. So let us continue as he goes
- 1:01from place to place into prison, out of prison.
- 1:04Oh, it's all happening. Let's read together Acts chapter
- 1:0716. Paul went first to Derby and
- 1:20then to Lystra, where there was a young disciple named Timothy.
- 1:23His mother was a Jewish believer, but his father was a
- 1:26Greek. Timothy was well thought of by
- 1:29the believers in Lystra and Iconium.
- 1:31So Paul wanted him to join them on their journey in defence to
- 1:35the Jews of the area. He arranged for Timothy to be
- 1:38circumcised before they left, for everyone knew that his
- 1:41father was a Greek. Then they went from town to
- 1:44town, instructing the believers to follow the decisions made by
- 1:48the apostles and elders in Jerusalem.
- 1:51So the churches were strengthened in their faith and
- 1:54grew larger every day. Next, Paul and Silas travelled
- 1:59through the area of Phrygia and Galatia, because the Holy Spirit
- 2:03had prevented them from preaching the Word in the
- 2:04province of Asia at that time. Then, coming to the borders of
- 2:09Mycia, they headed north for the province of Bethania.
- 2:13But again, the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them to go there.
- 2:17So instead they went on through Mycia to the seaport of Troas.
- 2:22That night Paul had a vision. A man from Macedonia in northern
- 2:27Greece was standing there pleading with him come over to
- 2:30Macedonia and help us. So we decided to leave for
- 2:35Macedonia at once, having concluded that God was calling
- 2:39us to preach the good news there.
- 2:41We boarded a boat at Troas and sailed straight across to the
- 2:45island of Samothras, and the next day we landed at Neapolis.
- 2:50From there we reached Philippi, a major city of that district of
- 2:53Macedonia and a Roman colony, and we stayed there several
- 2:57days. On the Sabbath we went a little
- 3:01way outside the city to a riverbank where we thought
- 3:04people would be meeting for prayer, and we sat down to speak
- 3:07with some women who had gathered there.
- 3:09One of them was Lydia from Thyatira, a merchant of
- 3:13expensive purple cloth who worshipped God.
- 3:16As she listened to us, the Lord opened her heart and she
- 3:20accepted what Paul was saying. She and her household were
- 3:23baptised and she asked us to be her guests.
- 3:27If you agree that I am a true believer in the Lord, she said
- 3:30come and stay at my home and she urged us until we agreed.
- 3:36One day as we were going down to the place of prayer, we met a
- 3:39slave girl who had a spirit that enabled her to tell the future.
- 3:43She earned a lot of money for her masters by telling fortunes.
- 3:47She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, these men, the
- 3:50servants of the Most High God, and they have come to tell you
- 3:54how to be saved. This went on day after day until
- 3:59Paul got so exasperated that he turned and said to the demon
- 4:03within her, I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out
- 4:07of her. And instantly it left her.
- 4:11Her master's hopes of wealth were now shattered, so they
- 4:14grabbed Paul and Silas and dragged them before the
- 4:17authorities at the marketplace. The whole city is in an uproar
- 4:21because of these Jews. They shouted to the city
- 4:24officials. They are teaching customs that
- 4:26are illegal for us Romans to practise.
- 4:29A mob quickly formed against Paul and Silas, and the city
- 4:33officials ordered them stripped and beaten with wooden rods.
- 4:37They were severely beaten and they were thrown into prison.
- 4:41The gaoler was ordered to make sure they didn't escape, so the
- 4:44gaoler put them into the inner dungeon and clamped their feet
- 4:48in the stocks. Around midnight, Paul and Silas
- 4:52were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners
- 4:55were listening. Suddenly there was a massive
- 4:58earthquake and the prison was shaken to its foundations.
- 5:02All the doors immediately flew open and the chains of every
- 5:06prisoner fell off. The gaoler woke up to see the
- 5:09prison doors wide open. He assumed the prisoners had
- 5:12escaped, so he drew his sword to kill himself, but Paul shouted
- 5:16to him, Stop, don't kill yourself, we are all here.
- 5:21The gaoler called for lights and ran to the dungeon and fell down
- 5:25trembling before Paul and Silas. Then he brought them out and
- 5:29asked Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
- 5:33They replied, Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved
- 5:39along with everyone in your household.
- 5:41And they shared the word of the Lord with him and with all who
- 5:44lived in his household. Even at that hour of the night,
- 5:48the gaoler cared for them and washed their wounds.
- 5:51Then he and everyone in his household were immediately
- 5:53baptised. He brought them into his house
- 5:56and set a meal before them. And he and his entire household
- 6:00rejoiced because they all believed in God.
- 6:04The next morning, the city officials sent the police to
- 6:07tell the gaoler, let those men go.
- 6:10So the gaoler told Paul, the city officials have said you and
- 6:13Silas are free to leave, go in peace.
- 6:18But Paul replied, they have publicly beaten us without a
- 6:21trial and put us in prison, and we are Roman citizens.
- 6:25So now they want us to leave secretly, certainly not let them
- 6:30come themselves to release us. When the police reported this,
- 6:35the city officials were alarmed to learn that Paul and Silas
- 6:38were Roman citizens. So they came to the gaol and
- 6:41apologised to them. Then they brought them out and
- 6:45begged them to leave the city. When Paul and Silas left the
- 6:48prison, they returned to the home of Lydia.
- 6:52There they met with the believers and encouraged them
- 6:54once more than they left town. Jesus, you sure don't leave
- 7:09things to chance. We're hearing this story that
- 7:12your Spirit guides Paul and Silas to go in One Direction and
- 7:17blocks him from going in other directions.
- 7:20Oh, thank You that you take such a keen interest in your Kingdom
- 7:24here on earth. Our Lord, as we go about our
- 7:28days and we seek Your will, as we earnestly try to work out
- 7:33what is your work that you want us to do to use our gifts and
- 7:39our skills and our experiences to benefit your Kingdom.
- 7:43Jesus, I pray that you open doors and I pray that you close
- 7:48doors. And Holy Spirit, I pray that you
- 7:51guide us in the direction that you have for us.
- 7:56Give us your clarity so that we can truly live lives of service,
- 8:01knowing that each step we take, we take in the power of your
- 8:04spirit, embolden to go forth and do your good work and not
- 8:09following the whims of what seems important day to day.
- 8:13So we just recommit ourselves to you as living sacrifices, ready
- 8:18to love and to serve you every single day.
- 8:22We love you, Jesus, and we pray all of this in your powerful
- 8:25name, Amen.
