- 0:24to lead us through today's journey, here is your
- 0:28host. Pastor David. As we gather today on Voices
- 0:34of Life, a ministry of the Church for Life, I'm
- 0:38happy to see you with us going into what happened
- 0:41on September 3rd throughout the centuries. I'm
- 0:44Pastor David. We turn our attention to a date
- 0:48that carries some of the most remarkable moments
- 0:50in human history. So what happened on September
- 0:543rd through the decades or centuries? On this
- 0:57single day across the centuries, nations were
- 1:00born. chains were broken, wars began, alliances
- 1:04collapsed, markets peaked, roads changed direction,
- 1:08and humanity reached out to another world. From
- 1:13the Treaty of Paris in 1783 to the escape of
- 1:16Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey in 1838,
- 1:20to the capture of Atlanta, to the peak before
- 1:23the Great Depression, to the declarations that
- 1:27ignited World War II, to Italy's secret armistice,
- 1:31and to Sweden's Dagon H, and finally to Viking
- 1:362 touching down on Mars. Each moment tells a
- 1:39story of courage, consequence, and change. And
- 1:43today we walk through them together with clear
- 1:45eyes and honest history so we can understand
- 1:48not only what happened, but why it matters. Let's
- 1:52begin. September 3rd, 1783, the day the United
- 1:56States became... in the eyes of the world, a
- 2:00sovereign nation. Great Britain formally recognized
- 2:03American independence. Boundaries were drawn,
- 2:05diplomacy replaced war, and the long struggle
- 2:09of the revolution reached its final conclusion.
- 2:13Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, John Jay, Henry
- 2:18Lawrence, and William Temple Franklin signed
- 2:20the treaty that became the nation's diplomatic
- 2:22birth certificate. On September 3rd, 1838, A
- 2:28man named Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey
- 2:30walked onto a train in Baltimore with borrowed
- 2:34identification papers and full knowledge that
- 2:38if he were caught, he would be chained, beaten,
- 2:41and dragged back into slavery. He was not Frederick
- 2:45Douglass. He was not legally recognized as a
- 2:49person. He was not allowed to have a lawful identity.
- 2:52Under American law, he was property, nothing
- 2:56more. This is the historical truth. Bailey used
- 3:00the papers of a free black sailor because the
- 3:03law gave him no legitimate way to identify himself
- 3:06as a human being. He traveled through Delaware
- 3:08and to Philadelphia and finally reached New York.
- 3:12And the next morning, he crossed state lines
- 3:15as a fugitive into a country that refused to
- 3:18acknowledge his existence. Why did he use aliases?
- 3:22Well, after escaping, Bailey first used the alias
- 3:26Frederick Johnson. He did this because keeping
- 3:29his real name would have gotten him arrested
- 3:30and returned to his owner. So he did what every
- 3:35escaped slave did. He created a name. He made
- 3:39it up. So slave catchers would not know who he
- 3:43was. When he reached New Bedford, Massachusetts,
- 3:46a friend suggested the surname Douglas. That
- 3:50was taken from a character in Sir Walter Scott's
- 3:52The Lady of the Lake. Bailey decided to use Douglas,
- 3:57but keep the name Frederick so people who knew
- 4:00him before could still recognize him. Frederick
- 4:05Douglas was not his birth name. It was not his
- 4:09legal name. It was not a name recognized by any
- 4:11government in 1838. It was a name that he made
- 4:15up because the law didn't let him safely live
- 4:20under his real name. So all books and records
- 4:24referring to him as Frederick Douglass are really
- 4:26inaccurate. His real name was Frederick Bailey.
- 4:30This is not a political correctness. This is
- 4:32not a modern framing. This is the documented
- 4:35historical reality of how escaped slaves survived.
- 4:40So why does September 3rd matter here? Well,
- 4:42this date marks the beginning of a life of a
- 4:44man who was a runaway slave and who would speak
- 4:47out against slavery. and for his own self -serving
- 4:50needs a man born frederick bailey who incorrectly
- 4:54became known in history as frederick douglas
- 4:57because his runaway status compelled him to make
- 5:00up name so his slave system could not hunt him
- 5:03down however there does not appear to be a clear
- 5:07reason why he did not revert back to his real
- 5:10name after the civil war because there he was
- 5:13free he was protected by law and certainly wasn't
- 5:17going to be re -enslaved But the only fact that
- 5:20we can find is he misrepresented himself as Frederick
- 5:23Douglass to too many people in the U .S. internationally
- 5:25to change them. So, history books say Frederick
- 5:30Douglass, but the real name? Frederick Bailey.
- 5:33Did you know? In 1864, the Union captured Atlanta.
- 5:39September 3rd, 1864, news reached Washington
- 5:42that Sherman's forces had occupied Atlanta after
- 5:45Hood's evacuation. president lincoln proclaimed
- 5:48the national day of thanksgiving the victory
- 5:51strengthened the union's morale reshaped the
- 5:54eighteen sixty four presidential election atlanta's
- 5:57fall was both strategic and symbolic a turning
- 6:00point in the civil war and a gain in lincoln's
- 6:04political career on september third nineteen
- 6:07twenty nine the dow jones industrial average
- 6:10closed at three eighty one point seventeen The
- 6:14peak before the catastrophic crash. Now we look
- 6:18at it today at 381 .17 compared to where we are
- 6:22today at like 54 ,000. And you'd say, that was
- 6:27the peak? But yes, back then that was the peak.
- 6:29381 .17. Within weeks came Black Thursday, Black
- 6:36Monday, and Black Tuesday. The Great Depression
- 6:40was about to begin. This date marks the high
- 6:44water line before one of the greatest economic
- 6:47collapses in history. In 1939, Britain and France
- 6:53declared war on Germany. September 3, 1939, two
- 6:57days after Germany invaded Poland, Britain and
- 7:00France declared war. Neville Chamberlain addressed
- 7:04the nation. France followed hours later. World
- 7:08War II had begun in Europe. podcast, they never
- 7:14sent any soldiers in. They didn't try to stop
- 7:17Hitler. They just declared war thinking that
- 7:20the declaration would be enough. Unfortunately,
- 7:23it wasn't. On September 3rd, 1943, Italy secretly
- 7:28signed the armistice of Casa Bile, ending the
- 7:33alliance with Nazi Germany. The announcement
- 7:36came five days later, triggering chaos. German
- 7:40occupation. and a new phase of the war. Wasn't
- 7:44that easy to separate from the Pact of Steel,
- 7:47after all. September 3, 1967, at 5 a .m., Sweden
- 7:52switched from left -hand driving on the road
- 7:56to right -hand driving on the road. Millions
- 8:00of citizens, thousands of signs, and an entire
- 8:03transportation system changed in a single coordinated
- 8:06moment. It was one of the most successful. National
- 8:11Logistical Operations in Modern History. Imagine
- 8:14us here in the United States going from the right
- 8:17lane to the left lane. Boy, that would be pretty
- 8:20tough. September 3rd, 1976. NASA's Viking 2 touched
- 8:27down at Utopia Planitia conducting experiments,
- 8:31taking photographs and searching for signs of
- 8:35life. It became one of the most important missions.
- 8:38in the history of planetary exploration september
- 8:433rd was an amazing day and as we close today's
- 8:48journey about september 3rd we are reminded that
- 8:50history is never just a list of dates it is a
- 8:55record of choices of people who acted of consequences
- 9:01that shaped the world we now live in a treaty
- 9:05that confirmed a nation A man who used an alias
- 9:11to stay free. A city captured the change to war.
- 9:17A market peak that warned of a storm. A declaration
- 9:22that set Europe on fire. A secret armistice that
- 9:26reshaped alliances. A nation that switched sides
- 9:29of the road in a single morning. And a spacecraft
- 9:33that landed on another planet millions of miles
- 9:37away. These moments are not distant. They speak
- 9:42to us. They remind us that courage matters, truth
- 9:44matters, and decisions we make today will become
- 9:47the history someone else reads tomorrow. Thank
