- 0:18I'm Misty Winkler, homemaker, homeschool mom, grandma, and author of the book Home
- 0:24is for Hospitality: Why Your Home and Homemaking Matter Convivial means living
- 0:30life together with joy, and that's the kind of home atmosphere that we want to
- 0:35create as Christian wives and mothers.
- 0:39We can do that when we repent, rejoice, repeat.
- 0:43So join me for this quick attitude pep talk
- 0:47that will help you learn to love what must be done.
- 0:50Grab a basket of laundry to fold and let's dig in
- 0:54so as we plan, as we make our plans, as we try to get stuff done in the summer,
- 1:02we want to, um, keep our attitude about that plan solid and cheerful.
- 1:14We don't want to be so focused on getting our project done that we are rude and
- 1:22overbearing to the people in our house.
- 1:26And we have to recognize that mothering and homemaking, just
- 1:33not even the homemaking projects.
- 1:35You know, I'm not talking about sourdough and sewing and canning.
- 1:39I'm talking about cleaning the toilets and sweeping the floors.
- 1:45Like, maintenance of the home takes a lot of time, and it's stuff that
- 1:50we usually don't count on our plan.
- 1:53So for these weekly resets, um, I have the a, a free resource for
- 2:00you, um, the weekly dashboard.
- 2:04So when we are making plans, the whole point is figuring out what we
- 2:12should be spending our time doing.
- 2:15You know, what are we counting?
- 2:18And often when we make our plans and we write things down, they
- 2:24are wishful thinking plans.
- 2:27We are not thinking about, um, what really needs to be done.
- 2:34We are thinking about what we would like to get done if no one ever interrupted us,
- 2:44if no one had bloody noses, spilled milk, or, you know, was hungry between meals.
- 2:53Then we would get so much done.
- 2:55But the fact is that managing that home with the constant caretaking
- 3:04is our job, and there might be seasons where we have to actually
- 3:09acknowledge that on our written plan.
- 3:12But too often, our default is like, "Well, since my wishful thinking
- 3:17plans can't happen, then I'm just gonna give up planning entirely.
- 3:23Like, why bother writing things down if the things that I want to
- 3:27get done aren't gonna get done?"
- 3:30Right?
- 3:30This is sometimes the way we think, and those are not the two options.
- 3:37We can give ourselves a focus with a written plan so that we are less
- 3:44distractable, and, I mean, distractions are a huge problem right now.
- 3:50We need tactics to overcome distraction, and a written plan is a key part.
- 3:58But not just any written plan, not an overcomplicated plan.
- 4:02You don't need a planner with stickers and color coding and all the things.
- 4:08You need a daily card with your top three.
- 4:12You need very basic daily habits for yourself and for the home.
- 4:19And then you need to give yourself options for things you
- 4:23will work on if you have time.
- 4:25We call that a running list.
- 4:27Often the mistake we make with planning is that,
- 4:33We think that if I just fill in the blanks of the planner that I
- 4:39purchased, then I have a good plan.
- 4:44Like, my job isn't really making the plan so much as filling in the blanks,
- 4:49as if the planner that I purchased is my worksheet, and if I get the
- 4:55answers right on the worksheet, then it's g- the plan's gonna work.
- 5:01But that's not what a planner page is at all.
- 5:05That kind of just good student, good employee mentality and mode
- 5:11of operating does not work at home.
- 5:16And adding in worksheets to your day isn't gonna make it work, and it's
- 5:21not the worksheet that's the problem.
- 5:23But then we spend our time browsing Amazon or Etsy or, you know, making our
- 5:29own planner pages because we think if I just have the right blanks on the page
- 5:36and then I fill them in, then something magic will happen, and I'll be happy
- 5:43with myself at the end of the day.
- 5:47But it's not about the planner page, although I do think
- 5:51a planner page is helpful.
- 5:53But your planner page could be just a spiral notebook.
- 6:02I have several friends who their planner is just a spiral notebook,
- 6:08and they write things down.
- 6:09They make notes to self.
- 6:11It's their collection of lists, and they've got their notebook,
- 6:15and they've got their calendar.
- 6:18And the- that's how they run their life, and that is completely adequate.
- 6:25Because you don't need to fill in blanks to have a complete plan.
- 6:31You need to make notes to self for what notes you need to see to help your
- 6:38week progress and to remind yourself of what needs to happen on different
- 6:45days or what needs to happen this week.
- 6:48You know, remind yourself of what you're procrastinating on so that
- 6:53you can stop procrastinating, not be distracted, and recognize that the
- 6:59little things that we are doing count
- 7:03just because, you know, you didn't get to X, Y, Z that you really wanted
- 7:10to, just because the pantry is not as organized as you would like, because,
- 7:15you know, something spilled in there and it had to wait for tomorrow.
- 7:20That is life.
- 7:22And we can roll with that and not let everything not, every little thing
- 7:30not going our way count against us and become evidence to our internal
- 7:37story that we are not good at this, that we are failing, that we should
- 7:42just stop trying because it's never going to be what we want it to be.
- 7:49That is a false story, a lie in your head that is taking you out of the
- 7:55game, and it's imperative, it's vital that we tell ourselves the truth about
- 8:05our life, that we tell ourselves the truth about our work and our abilities.
- 8:12And we are able to do the work that God has called us to do.
- 8:16It might make us tired, and it might not.
- 8:19It likely will not turn out the way we wanted it to turn out.
- 8:25But that's okay
- 8:27You know, there's, um, reminds me of Proverbs 19:21.
- 8:32There are many proverbs that speak to planning.
- 8:37One of my favorites is, "Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is
- 8:42the purpose of the Lord that will stand."
- 8:47Your plans are not as important as God's, and whatever is happening is
- 8:53the life that God is sending you.
- 8:56And so you can take it.
- 9:01You can accept it.
- 9:03You can work with it.
- 9:05And I know many are the plans in my mind, for sure.
- 9:09I am never short of plans.
- 9:14But just because I have a plan doesn't mean that that's what's going to happen
- 9:20And no matter what I plan, I need to be able to accept the providence of
- 9:27God day by day and accept that as the new plan and realign and reassess.
- 9:35You're always making these judgment calls about using your time and energy.
- 9:41It is an economics decision, right?
- 9:43There are scarce resources that have multiple applications.
- 9:48And so living, living life, especially in home, in a home with, you know,
- 9:58you're managing many lives in your home, many different responsibilities.
- 10:05And so there are more uses for the scarce resources, whether that's
- 10:11time, money, energy, attention.
- 10:15There are more uses than resources.
- 10:21And we think that that means that we have to do something, like we just don't
- 10:27have enough resources, and so we should, um, do things to either increase our
- 10:36resources or reduce the options, right, the ways that those resources could be
- 10:47used so that they can come out equal.
- 10:51And, and we're trying to get to the point where they come out equal so that we
- 10:56don't have to make those judgment calls, when actually getting good at making
- 11:02the judgment calls is the whole point.
- 11:06That is growth in wisdom.
- 11:09That's what we're supposed to be learning.
- 11:12And so it's like we're trying to take away the whole point of the lesson.
- 11:19The real key to ma- making plans that help us is to make a plan that
- 11:26acknowledges our limits, that we will have more options, more things we could
- 11:33do, good things we could do with our time and attention and our energy.
- 11:40But for right now, we are going to focus on, we are going to choose these things.
- 11:48And unless God comes and disrupts that, this is what we're doing.
- 11:56We acknowledge God might disrupt that for us, and then that will be fine.
- 12:01But what we don't want is to just be all, "Woe is me.
- 12:06I can't do everything that I want to do, so I'm going to do nothing."
- 12:11And like when we, when we just put it that way, that sounds ridiculous.
- 12:15But if we're honest, we all have been there.
- 12:20Where it's like, I don't wanna make a choice.
- 12:22Making a choice is too hard.
- 12:24I don't know if it's the right choice, and so I'm gonna make
- 12:27no choice at all and do nothing.
- 12:29And like that is the dep- that is the story of the servant who
- 12:37buried his talent in the ground.
- 12:39He's like, "I'm not gonna go risk and put myself out there.
- 12:44I'm just gonna keep it safe."
- 12:46That is not an option.
- 12:48That is disobedience.
- 12:50So we need to put ourselves out there.
- 12:54This is what I wanna work on.
- 12:56And it's in practicing making those judgment calls that we get better at it.
- 13:02You might choose the, you know, not the best thing.
- 13:07You're trying to choose between different good things, and maybe you
- 13:10bit off more than you could chew.
- 13:12Maybe your goal was outsized for the time that you had.
- 13:15You're learning.
- 13:17And so it's not something that you have to say, "Well, you know, I'm bad at this.
- 13:22I did, it didn't work the first week, and so I'm bad at this.
- 13:26I'm not gonna do it anymore."
- 13:29And it's like, that's like what every, you know, second or third
- 13:34grader says on the first spelling or math test that they bomb.
- 13:38"Must be bad at it.
- 13:40Can't, can't get any farther.
- 13:41Let's just quit."
- 13:43And you wouldn't let your child do that, and you should not let yourself do that.
- 13:47You have to actually practice and try and figure out and grow in wisdom
- 13:54and discernment in deciding what you should be doing And seeing how it went.
- 14:01You want your plan, your daily card, and your dashboard, and your calendar to
- 14:07reflect your real work, your real job.
- 14:12You expand your capacity by going all in on the base responsibilities,
- 14:19and you work out from there.
- 14:22So then you have the daily card, that's ⦠There's a spot on the
- 14:26dashboard for that, and you'll see that there is, um, there's a, a running list
- 14:32on the side, a column of just blanks.
- 14:35These are, like, put ⦠Give yourselves options.
- 14:38What could you do this week in the margins?
- 14:41What needs to be done?
- 14:43Like, put some time into identifying 10 to 15-minute tasks that would
- 14:50make a difference, things you could do, things that you should do,
- 14:53things you've been procrastinating, and just keep that running list.
- 14:58So a running list, I like to think of as options.
- 15:03Because in the moment when the st- you know, whatever is done,
- 15:10too often the tempting thing is to say, "Well, I don't know what to do
- 15:15next, so I'll just open my phone.
- 15:19So I'll just, you know, do nothing."
- 15:24When we have a lot more we should be doing, but we haven't identified
- 15:29what it is, and we think, "Well, when I have time, I'll figure it out."
- 15:33But figuring it out or remembering is a whole separate deal.
- 15:38And when you have that time in the afternoon, you wanna just be able to
- 15:41do it without having to spend that filtering, thinking, identifying time.
- 15:48So during your weekly review, you will give yourself some options for work
- 15:55that needs to be done in bite-size baby step pieces, and then you have
- 16:01a go-to spot when there's time.
- 16:05And maybe you'll have a week where there isn't, and maybe you'll have a
- 16:08week where everything was canceled, and suddenly you have a free day,
- 16:11and you can knock out a whole bunch.
- 16:13But you'll get more done because you have identified it.
- 16:16You know what you're working on.
- 16:18You have options to focus on.
- 16:22Writing things down so that you aren't keeping things in your head
- 16:28frees your head to focus and think and really be engaged with the
- 16:33people and the work in front of you.
- 16:36And then you have a place to go.
- 16:40Or if something pops into your head and you're like, "Oh, wait,
- 16:43I totally forgot to do this.
- 16:44I need to go do this," you write it down.
- 16:48You have a place to write it down where you know you'll see it And we, I think,
- 16:55would have a lot, um, clearer mental space as mothers if we would just write things
- 17:04down instead of keeping them in our head.
- 17:09If you suffer from mental spiraling, and I'm not sure there are any of us
- 17:14that don't do that sometimes, writing things down is one of the basic things.
- 17:21Just like if you're, if you have headaches, like before you
- 17:24go to the doctor, you should try drinking water, right?
- 17:28You might just be dehydrated.
- 17:31You- we don't need to go jump all the way to the end of like, "I must have
- 17:36a medical condition that needs drugs."
- 17:39Like, well, how much water have you had?
- 17:42Writing things down is the equivalent of having a drink of water.
- 17:47Write things down.
- 17:49If you feel crazy in your head, just start writing things down and see what happens.
- 17:56You write it down, then you can think about it, you can pray about it, you can
- 17:59talk about it, instead of just letting it all fill up your brain space and stall
- 18:06you out you're making notes to yourself, you're learning along the way, and you are
- 18:11working toward increasing your capacity and enjoying the life that God is sending
- 18:19you day by day, by being engaged in it, by using the life that God is sending
- 18:26you to grow in wisdom and discernment
- 18:31You can end the day satisfied.
- 18:33You can enjoy.
- 18:35You can learn to love what must be done.
- 18:37You can enjoy your life at home, including the dishes and
- 18:43the meals and the everything.
