- 0:11Speaker 1: Every Tuesday, everybody, welcome.
- 0:18Speaker 2: To the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Glad to be with you, as is always the case.
- 0:43Speaker 2: It is another hot day here in Salt Lake City.
- 0:47Speaker 2: We are inching closer and closer and closer to college
- 0:50Speaker 2: football season. When I was a little kid, the final
- 0:55Speaker 2: few days before Christmas were always the longest days. Where
- 1:00Speaker 2: you're like, oh my gosh, Santa Claus is coming in
- 1:03Speaker 2: six days. And then that sixth day felt like it
- 1:07Speaker 2: was a week by itself. We're getting into that mode
- 1:12Speaker 2: with Utah football season rapidly approaching. Nine days away now.
- 1:18Speaker 2: You've got week zero games happening in four days. TCU
- 1:24Speaker 2: and North Carolina, the Big 12's first opportunity to establish
- 1:30Speaker 2: themselves as a league. USC plays this weekend. I gave
- 1:35Speaker 2: you the slate yesterday. There's, there's some, there's enough meat
- 1:38Speaker 2: on the bone that the week zero games are probably
- 1:40Speaker 2: going to grab some of your attention. You got little
- 1:43Speaker 2: league world series happening right now. You've got combat sports
- 1:46Speaker 2: going on. You've got Utah volleyball in action this week.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Fall sports are almost here before long. The Utah jazz
- 1:56Speaker 2: and the Utah mammoth will be in action this Utah basketball. Actually,
- 2:01Speaker 2: maybe the most important story from a Utes perspective today
- 2:05Speaker 2: is the breaking news from last night that Noam Yaakov
- 2:10Speaker 2: is not going to be eligible to play for the
- 2:12Speaker 2: University of Utah. This is a huge bummer because it
- 2:18Speaker 2: was kind of a coup for... Alex Jensen and his
- 2:21Speaker 2: staff to secure the services of Noam Yaakov, but he
- 2:25Speaker 2: has been deemed ineligible to compete by the NCAA. And
- 2:30Speaker 2: this is part of a larger story that we're going
- 2:32Speaker 2: to be diving into further today as the football eligibility
- 2:37Speaker 2: of former pros gets more attention. Noam Yaakov has international
- 2:47Speaker 2: experience that Some people would be like, you know what?
- 2:52Speaker 2: We don't want to see him playing in college basketball.
- 2:55Speaker 2: There's a lot deeper precedent for guys who come out
- 2:59Speaker 2: of professional clubs or the professional club systems in Europe
- 3:03Speaker 2: and in Israel and some of these other places to
- 3:07Speaker 2: end up in college basketball. And we've sort of accepted
- 3:11Speaker 2: that that's just the way things are going to go.
- 3:13Speaker 2: I don't know if, well, I do know that The
- 3:19Speaker 2: crimson-colored glasses that I tend to find myself wearing on
- 3:22Speaker 2: some of these issues obviously had me hopeful that Noam
- 3:25Speaker 2: Yaakov would be allowed to play. The fact that there
- 3:30Speaker 2: are other guys, even locally, that had put on a
- 3:36Speaker 2: Utah Jazz jersey, and as far as we know are
- 3:38Speaker 2: going to be able to play for BYU, that's a
- 3:41Speaker 2: little bit silly if Noam Yaakov can't play. He went
- 3:43Speaker 2: to his social media and expressed a lot of regret
- 3:46Speaker 2: that this is happening. respect for the Utah basketball program,
- 3:52Speaker 2: for all the work that they put in in incorporating
- 3:55Speaker 2: him into the team culture and things like that. He's
- 3:58Speaker 2: got a good relationship with Alex Jensen. For Coach Jensen,
- 4:01Speaker 2: this has to be so incredibly frustrating because despite all
- 4:06Speaker 2: the effort to getting this young man cleared to play
- 4:09Speaker 2: in 2026, 2027, the NCAA comes down and says no,
- 4:10Speaker 2: and there doesn't appear to be like a very well-articulated
- 4:21Speaker 2: reasoning behind it. If you want to say, no, he's
- 4:29Speaker 2: not eligible, fine. Tell me why. Tell me how. Tell
- 4:35Speaker 2: me the reasoning behind it or the player precedent. We
- 4:40Speaker 2: didn't let this guy play, so we can't let your
- 4:42Speaker 2: guy play, whatever it is. And the unfortunate reality is
- 4:50Speaker 2: Utah can't sit around. Northern Iowa transfer Trey Campbell effectively
- 5:01Speaker 2: gets a greater opportunity at the University of Utah because
- 5:06Speaker 2: of Noam Yaakov being deemed ineligible. And it's not going
- 5:09Speaker 2: to be framed that way. by the staff at least.
- 5:14Speaker 2: It might not be talked about so directly by the staff,
- 5:17Speaker 2: but it is effectively a contingency plan. You wanted this
- 5:22Speaker 2: guy who you thought had some all Big 12 potential
- 5:25Speaker 2: in Noam Yakov. You can't have him, according to the NCAA.
- 5:29Speaker 2: So you go to Trey Campbell, who averaged 13.7 points,
- 5:33Speaker 2: almost four assists, almost four rebounds, and almost two steals,
- 5:38Speaker 2: starting all 36 games at Northern Iowa. second-team all-conference guy
- 5:42Speaker 2: in the Missouri Valley Conference, which is the equivalent of
- 5:46Speaker 2: in football being like an all-Mountain West-type player. Missouri Valley
- 5:52Speaker 2: is a great mid-major conference. He was the Missouri Valley
- 6:00Speaker 2: Conference Tournament Player of the Year, the Outstanding Player of
- 6:03Speaker 2: the Tournament, after... Northern Iowa won four games in four
- 6:08Speaker 2: days and a conference championship. 23 points, six three-pointers in
- 6:15Speaker 2: the title game. All good stuff, right? So, yay, Trey Campbell.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Happy to see that. The Noam Yakov thing is more
- 6:24Speaker 2: of a head-scratcher than anything else right now because there
- 6:27Speaker 2: are guys that were on G League rosters or were
- 6:34Speaker 2: in Summer League camps that are going to be playing
- 6:36Speaker 2: college basketball next year, as far as we can tell.
- 6:43Speaker 2: I don't love that there's not a clear delineation between
- 6:51Speaker 2: people who explored pro basketball or pro football or pro
- 6:55Speaker 2: baseball or pro hockey or whatever sport, pro track and field,
- 7:00Speaker 2: and the college athlete. You want those two things to
- 7:05Speaker 2: remain separate. Right now they are not fully separated. And
- 7:09Speaker 2: because the NCAA is toothless and because the lawyers and
- 7:13Speaker 2: the billable hours remain undefeated, conferences now are starting to
- 7:18Speaker 2: come out and establish their own rules here. Now, of course,
- 7:22Speaker 2: the conference rules are going to be legally challenged just
- 7:25Speaker 2: like the NCAA rules or the federal rules or any
- 7:29Speaker 2: other rule, right? There's going to be some district judge
- 7:32Speaker 2: somewhere that says, Big Ten, I saw your announcement because
- 7:36Speaker 2: the Big Ten did put out an announcement that they
- 7:38Speaker 2: will not allow pro players to return to college competition.
- 7:42Speaker 2: They will not be eligible in the Big Ten. We're
- 7:44Speaker 2: not going to take this. Sorry, Indiana. Sorry, Michigan. Sorry,
- 7:48Speaker 2: Ohio State. We are not going to allow you to
- 7:53Speaker 2: sign these bounce-back players. Not going to happen here. Even
- 7:58Speaker 2: the SEC, whose member institutions are, let's face it, the
- 8:03Speaker 2: most likely landing spots for all of these guys. LSU
- 8:07Speaker 2: is like ground zero for this. And Lane Kiffin is
- 8:12Speaker 2: defending the practice. He's saying, if these bounce back guys
- 8:16Speaker 2: aren't playing for you, they're going to be playing somewhere,
- 8:18Speaker 2: so why would I want them to play for me?
- 8:20Speaker 2: All right, Lane, we understand. But the SEC... is meeting.
- 8:27Speaker 2: The big 12 is meeting. The ACC is meeting about
- 8:32Speaker 2: putting rules in place to limit the bounce back eligibility
- 8:37Speaker 2: of players who were in pro circles. And again, we
- 8:44Speaker 2: talked about this yesterday. You're going to have to find
- 8:45Speaker 2: the place where you draw the line. Is it, you
- 8:48Speaker 2: played in a preseason game? Is it, you got invited
- 8:50Speaker 2: to a camp? Is it, you hired a A pro agent? Well, no,
- 8:56Speaker 2: we already pushed the line back from there. That's the
- 8:58Speaker 2: old line. Okay, well, what about if you just participated
- 9:04Speaker 2: in a pro practice or you signed a pro contract,
- 9:06Speaker 2: even if it was a 10-day introductory, two-way, whatever? That
- 9:12Speaker 2: seems to be where the conferences, who surprisingly are the
- 9:16Speaker 2: ones stepping up to take responsibility for this, seems to
- 9:21Speaker 2: be where they want to draw the line. And I'm
- 9:23Speaker 2: in support of that. For the sole reason that I
- 9:28Speaker 2: just don't want it to get any crazier. I don't
- 9:32Speaker 2: want us to see, there was all these like joke
- 9:36Speaker 2: posts going out on social media yesterday of guys who
- 9:40Speaker 2: have been in the league for like four years, but
- 9:45Speaker 2: haven't really panned out as draft picks. All these hate
- 9:49Speaker 2: so-and-so Justin Fields has committed to play for LSU. So
- 9:55Speaker 2: you've got the Big Ten saying, no, we're putting a
- 9:59Speaker 2: rule in place. and it's going to be put in
- 10:02Speaker 2: place today that we do not allow bounce-back players. If
- 10:08Speaker 2: there's a better term you'd like me to use, by
- 10:10Speaker 2: the way, than bounce-back, let me know, 877-353-0700. But multiple
- 10:17Speaker 2: sources are reporting that the Big Ten is putting a
- 10:21Speaker 2: rule in place today that stops players from returning to
- 10:26Speaker 2: college football from the NFL. And this would apply to
- 10:31Speaker 2: any player who's declared for the NFL draft and did
- 10:34Speaker 2: not withdraw their name. If you appeared on an NFL
- 10:37Speaker 2: roster or you signed a contract with the pro league,
- 10:40Speaker 2: you cannot be on a big 10 roster. This, by
- 10:43Speaker 2: the way, will extend to arena football, to the UFL,
- 10:48Speaker 2: to the alternative professional football leagues. And the ruling comes
- 10:54Speaker 2: on the heels of. what's going on in the sec
- 10:59Speaker 2: and even the sec, again, you got to give credit
- 11:02Speaker 2: where it's due. When most of the time I'm complaining
- 11:05Speaker 2: about the sec and their general lack of couth, the
- 11:10Speaker 2: sec is also looking at this and saying, ah, maybe
- 11:13Speaker 2: this isn't best for college football. Maybe we do need
- 11:17Speaker 2: to explore some of what makes the most sense. for
- 11:25Speaker 2: high school athletes, for junior college athletes, more, most importantly,
- 11:29Speaker 2: more importantly for athletes on actual rosters. And of course
- 11:35Speaker 2: you apply it to the local rosters here, right? BYU
- 11:38Speaker 2: basketball has expressed and well, they, they have, they've got
- 11:45Speaker 2: G league guys on the roster. They brought a G
- 11:49Speaker 2: league guy onto the roster last year.
- 11:51Speaker 3: And I.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Perhaps foolishly, maybe not. I was relatively up in arms
- 11:58Speaker 2: about it on the air and privately like, what are
- 12:01Speaker 2: we doing here? Right. That player did not end up
- 12:04Speaker 2: being anything significant for BYU. So maybe the reaction or
- 12:10Speaker 2: the overreaction, the result kind of like puts it in
- 12:15Speaker 2: a different box. What would I have said? What would
- 12:19Speaker 2: we have said? What should we have said? Had BYU,
- 12:22Speaker 2: a bounce back player who came out of the G
- 12:24Speaker 2: league or who came out of like a well-established top
- 12:28Speaker 2: level international league ended up being an all conference guy
- 12:32Speaker 2: or a player of the year candidate, or even a
- 12:34Speaker 2: sixth man of the year candidate. I would want to
- 12:39Speaker 2: put a little asterisk next to the wins. It's like, well,
- 12:44Speaker 2: that's a professional player you brought back, but, but you
- 12:49Speaker 2: had to zoom out a little bit further when you
- 12:52Speaker 2: we have Gordy Chiesa come in and talk about, yeah, well,
- 12:54Speaker 2: we've been kind of fudging these lines with the European
- 12:56Speaker 2: players and the overseas players for a lot of years
- 12:59Speaker 2: because certain guys get into pro basketball when they're 15
- 13:03Speaker 2: years old in Lithuania or Slovenia or Israel or Germany
- 13:10Speaker 2: or whatever. And then at some point they get on
- 13:13Speaker 2: the radar of a college basketball team and And especially
- 13:16Speaker 2: with NIL now, that's a much more lucrative prospect. And
- 13:20Speaker 2: so these guys are coming over to play. And the
- 13:22Speaker 2: NBA just kind of looks the other way when it
- 13:24Speaker 2: comes to all this stuff. And now they're starting to
- 13:26Speaker 2: with G League contracts. And now apparently they're starting to
- 13:29Speaker 2: with Summer League contracts as well. And the added years
- 13:33Speaker 2: of eligibility.
- 13:35Speaker 4: I just..
- 13:38Speaker 2: I think we're long past arguing in favor of the
- 13:40Speaker 2: purity of college sports because there's not a lot of
- 13:42Speaker 2: purity at top level of college sports. If you want
- 13:45Speaker 2: purity in college sports, if you want love of the
- 13:47Speaker 2: game type stuff, you kind of have to go watch
- 13:52Speaker 2: one double a ball. Maybe it's still there in the
- 13:55Speaker 2: Mount West and the Sunbelt and places like that where
- 14:01Speaker 2: most guys are not playing under lucrative contracts. Maybe you
- 14:07Speaker 2: got to go all the way down to D2 and
- 14:08Speaker 2: D3 and Juco ball where guys are playing for the
- 14:12Speaker 2: love of the game. But are they playing for the
- 14:13Speaker 2: love of the game? Are they playing for the opportunity
- 14:15Speaker 2: to then make the money? And by the way, I
- 14:18Speaker 2: don't think playing for money disqualifies you from loving the game.
- 14:24Speaker 2: But there are serious questions about where loyalty lies now,
- 14:31Speaker 2: whether that loyalty should be able to have a price
- 14:35Speaker 2: tag on it. If you criticize someone for not being
- 14:40Speaker 2: loyal enough until a certain price point is met. And
- 14:43Speaker 2: then it's just like, okay, well that's just now everyone's
- 14:45Speaker 2: going to be disloyal for that kind of money.
- 14:48Speaker 5: Right.
- 14:49Speaker 2: I mean, there's, it's like the college football version of
- 14:53Speaker 2: indecent proposal where it's like, yeah, I'm going to, I'm
- 15:00Speaker 2: going to adhere to these promises and these commitments and
- 15:02Speaker 2: these oaths until we get to a level where it's like, ah,
- 15:08Speaker 2: that's probably enough money where I can compromise my principles.
- 15:13Speaker 2: And there's plenty of coaches who have set their principles
- 15:16Speaker 2: aside a long time ago. There's plenty, plenty of players
- 15:20Speaker 2: now who are, we're deep enough into this NIL thing.
- 15:23Speaker 2: There's plenty of young players of like coming out of
- 15:26Speaker 2: high school type players that are they haven't really existed
- 15:30Speaker 2: with any level of mental maturity in an environment other
- 15:34Speaker 2: than this one yet, because it moves so fast. And
- 15:37Speaker 2: we're now going into year five, year six of this thing.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Like that means the commitments coming out of high school kids.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Now they were 12 when the college football players started
- 15:47Speaker 2: to be paid. And when you're 12, you're not making
- 15:49Speaker 2: any decision based on principle or morals or anything like that.
- 15:53Speaker 2: You're not forming those types of ideas about things. You're
- 15:56Speaker 2: following examples. And if you're following examples of the guys
- 15:59Speaker 2: that you look up to and the guys that you
- 16:01Speaker 2: look up to happen to be the junior and senior
- 16:04Speaker 2: year guys that are at the high school, you're going
- 16:06Speaker 2: to go to the big brother of your best friend
- 16:08Speaker 2: who happens to be a big time recruit. Like not
- 16:11Speaker 2: everybody has an NFL dad. Who's a traditionalist to follow
- 16:16Speaker 2: in those footsteps. You know what I mean? Like, Actually,
- 16:20Speaker 2: we need to get Haloti on the air sooner than later.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Haloti Ngata, who is one of the greatest football players
- 16:27Speaker 2: that this state has ever produced. I mean, it's... When
- 16:33Speaker 2: you talk about homegrown, it's a very, very short list
- 16:37Speaker 2: that he's near the top of, right? He didn't play
- 16:41Speaker 2: his college ball here, of course. His son is going
- 16:43Speaker 2: to follow in his footsteps to the University of Oregon.
- 16:46Speaker 2: His son, Sam... is an outside linebacker at Olympus High School.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Shout out Casey Evans, the former Utah safety, who is
- 16:54Speaker 2: the head coach there. Hall O.T. 's on that staff.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Is Sam the Sam? Is he that linebacker? That's a
- 17:02Speaker 2: good question.
- 17:02Speaker 3: He probably is. I don't know if he's the Sam
- 17:04Speaker 3: backer or not. And by the way, boo, stay home. No,
- 17:08Speaker 3: just kidding.
- 17:10Speaker 2: James, I love that James' first words on the show
- 17:14Speaker 2: today are a... dad joke pun of the most cringy quality.
- 17:21Speaker 2: It's perfect. I mean, football guy over here. I know
- 17:23Speaker 2: I know Mike, Sam, right. But all that stuff, if you,
- 17:27Speaker 2: if you follow the way that the Sam not a
- 17:30Speaker 2: commitment and the Sam got a, a sort of like
- 17:33Speaker 2: recruitment situation went, it was not full of headlines and
- 17:38Speaker 2: flip flops and craziness, which by the way, hello, T's was,
- 17:43Speaker 2: was it really? Haloti was committed to BYU like twice.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Oh man. He ended up at Oregon, obviously like they,
- 17:50Speaker 2: I think Nebraska was in the mix. Cause Nebraska was
- 17:53Speaker 2: freakish powerhouse back then.
- 17:55Speaker 3: Celeste Moa ask if you will.
- 17:57Speaker 2: There was some of that going on.
- 17:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Right. No disrespect. Just, just pointing out. And, and there's a,
- 18:03Speaker 2: there's a context thing that happens here where, again, I
- 18:07Speaker 2: haven't talked to Haloti about this and I want to
- 18:09Speaker 2: get him on the show and maybe get Sam on
- 18:10Speaker 2: the show so we can talk about this. But like,
- 18:13Speaker 2: There's a difference when your dad walked the path that
- 18:16Speaker 2: he walked and gauge Weddle is someone we talk about
- 18:21Speaker 2: on the show all the time, because we talked to
- 18:23Speaker 2: his dad all the time. And he's obviously a major
- 18:25Speaker 2: target in the 20, 28 class for not only Utah,
- 18:28Speaker 2: but for every damn school in the country worth assault,
- 18:32Speaker 2: big target for Georgia, big target for Ohio state, big
- 18:36Speaker 2: target for Utah, right? Those guys are always going to
- 18:41Speaker 2: have a different frame of reference. Because their dads did
- 18:46Speaker 2: this thing at the very, very highest level. There's also
- 18:48Speaker 2: not the same level of urgency for those individuals to
- 18:52Speaker 2: cash in on the financial opportunities that the NIL stuff represents.
- 18:59Speaker 2: And we talked yesterday about how for players, it just
- 19:01Speaker 2: kind of makes too much sense to maximize your earning potential.
- 19:05Speaker 2: And so, of course, I'm going to hire a lawyer.
- 19:06Speaker 2: And of course, I'm going to hope that lawyer can
- 19:08Speaker 2: get me an extra year of eligibility and all that stuff.
- 19:11Speaker 2: But when we keep talking about where the adults in
- 19:14Speaker 2: the room, some of these kids and some of these
- 19:16Speaker 2: programs almost don't have the right adults in the room.
- 19:20Speaker 2: I'm bringing up a couple of families with local connections
- 19:23Speaker 2: who seem like they do very much have the right
- 19:25Speaker 2: adults in the room. And so those guys are guiding
- 19:29Speaker 2: things properly. They're setting the right example. They're talking the
- 19:32Speaker 2: right way.
- 19:33Speaker 3: Well, you think about not local, but you also think
- 19:36Speaker 3: about Arch Manning story, getting to college. You, It's a
- 19:41Speaker 3: similar feel to what you're talking about with the not as,
- 19:45Speaker 3: and with, with the Weddell's where it's clear that when
- 19:49Speaker 3: you have parents, uncles, whatever the case may be, who
- 19:55Speaker 3: have played at a high level in the NFL and
- 19:58Speaker 3: the case of the Mannings, the parents, uncles, and grand
- 20:00Speaker 3: and grandfather. But anyway, it's clear when you have that
- 20:03Speaker 3: kind of influence guiding you as an, as a teenager and,
- 20:09Speaker 3: you find that exception to what we're talking about where
- 20:12Speaker 3: these 12 year olds are looking at their, their idols
- 20:16Speaker 3: who were sophomores and juniors in college who are just
- 20:20Speaker 3: money grab here and left and right, because that's the
- 20:23Speaker 3: wild wild west system that is in place. When it
- 20:27Speaker 3: comes to Arch Manning, when it comes to Sam Nata,
- 20:29Speaker 3: when it comes to Gage Weddle, they have, they have
- 20:35Speaker 3: people close to them saying, no, like, That's actually not
- 20:39Speaker 3: the best way to do it. That's the way that
- 20:43Speaker 3: it seems the most enticing way, and sure, maybe you
- 20:45Speaker 3: can make the most money in college that way, but
- 20:48Speaker 3: the best way to do it long term is to
- 20:52Speaker 3: be measured and to have some loyalty and all that stuff.
- 20:57Speaker 3: It's no surprise that these kids that were pointing out
- 21:03Speaker 3: as potential exceptions to what's going on, Have the parents
- 21:07Speaker 3: and the family members that they have being their example.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Back in my day, all of you kids out there,
- 21:16Speaker 2: if you transferred high schools, it was like the most insane,
- 21:20Speaker 2: unthinkable thing that you would ever leave your friends behind,
- 21:25Speaker 2: leave your teammates behind, and go somewhere else to play
- 21:29Speaker 2: for a different coach or a different team in high school.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Unless your parents moved... you were not leaving the high
- 21:36Speaker 2: school that you started out at 10 years after I
- 21:42Speaker 2: was in high school, that started to be a thing.
- 21:45Speaker 2: And now it's darn near what college is, where if
- 21:49Speaker 2: you're a great player for Jordan high school, or you're
- 21:54Speaker 2: a great player for Davis high school, although Davis is
- 21:57Speaker 2: pretty good. So maybe they're a bad example. If you're
- 21:59Speaker 2: a great player for whoever corner Canyon's going to call
- 22:03Speaker 2: you eventually, right? Like think about sky Ridge is going
- 22:06Speaker 2: to be like, Hey, would you like to file an
- 22:09Speaker 2: address here in our boundaries? Get a waiver here. I mean,
- 22:13Speaker 2: there's like this type of stuff used to be a
- 22:16Speaker 2: lot more, it used to be a lot more rare.
- 22:19Speaker 2: And again, we're, we're, we're looking at a group of
- 22:21Speaker 2: athletes now who have been conditioned by even the people,
- 22:26Speaker 2: even the responsible parties around them to look out for
- 22:29Speaker 2: number one. And there's going to be a time in
- 22:31Speaker 2: all of our lives where, where that is the most
- 22:34Speaker 2: important thing where you have to take care of yourself first.
- 22:38Speaker 2: And by extension, you have to take care of your family.
- 22:41Speaker 2: So you're going to be disloyal to a boss. You're
- 22:44Speaker 2: going to take a different job. You're going to tell
- 22:48Speaker 2: somebody that this relationship is no longer good for me.
- 22:51Speaker 2: So I'm looking out for number one. And even though
- 22:54Speaker 2: this is going to hurt you, I am going to
- 22:56Speaker 2: move on from this in some kind of way. Like
- 22:59Speaker 2: All of us have those moments in our lives. Most
- 23:02Speaker 2: of us, it didn't happen when we were 15 years
- 23:05Speaker 2: old or 16 or 17 years old. And that's what's
- 23:08Speaker 2: going on right now. And those 15, 16 and 17
- 23:11Speaker 2: year olds that were conditioned by the environment around them
- 23:14Speaker 2: and the people around them and the atmosphere of pro
- 23:17Speaker 2: sports or the atmosphere of college sports that they're watching.
- 23:20Speaker 2: They're now the ones that are like, they are the,
- 23:24Speaker 2: the bulk of the roster. They are, that is everyone
- 23:27Speaker 2: in college football now.
- 23:30Speaker 3: Think about former running Ute now, Terrence Brown. I think
- 23:35Speaker 3: he played in three or four different states while he
- 23:38Speaker 3: was in high school.
- 23:39Speaker 2: It's wild, right? And now you've got these situations where
- 23:43Speaker 2: guys are finding that the pro... exploration that they tried
- 23:48Speaker 2: did not work out for them. And so they're like,
- 23:50Speaker 2: all right, now let me go back to do the
- 23:52Speaker 2: thing that's going to work out best for me. And again,
- 23:54Speaker 2: I don't even begrudge the individual this, because if I
- 23:57Speaker 2: could get another year of football back and I thought
- 24:00Speaker 2: I could actually compete much less being paid for it.
- 24:03Speaker 2: Heck yeah. Give me another year of college football, man.
- 24:07Speaker 2: That sounds like an absolute blast. Oh, I'm going to
- 24:10Speaker 2: make an extra 200 grand or 500 grand or 700
- 24:13Speaker 2: grand or maybe a million to do it when I'm
- 24:15Speaker 2: not getting that in the NFL. Great. Wonderful. Yes. But again,
- 24:21Speaker 2: that has to come at the expense of somebody. And
- 24:26Speaker 2: even in the case of Noam Yaakov and Utah, a
- 24:30Speaker 2: contingency plan had to be put in place and a
- 24:34Speaker 2: strategy has to be developed for Lane Kiffin. Lane Kiffin
- 24:37Speaker 2: strategy is I will take whoever, wherever, whenever. And he's
- 24:42Speaker 2: at a place now in LSU. If you got bad grades,
- 24:45Speaker 2: Lane can figure it out for you. If you have
- 24:47Speaker 2: a couple arrests on your record, Lane Kiffin can get
- 24:50Speaker 2: you on the roster. If you scored two touchdowns in
- 24:53Speaker 2: a preseason game, Lane's got a spot for you, right?
- 24:56Speaker 2: There's no principled situation there. The Big Ten is dictating
- 25:01Speaker 2: to their coaches now, You're not making those phone calls guys.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Our reputation is a, and this practice is B. We
- 25:09Speaker 2: are not going to allow this. The sec I think
- 25:13Speaker 2: is probably hearing from the lane Kiffin's of the world
- 25:15Speaker 2: and the Kirby smarts of the world. And who else
- 25:18Speaker 2: is like, I bet Kalen DeBoer at Alabama having a
- 25:25Speaker 2: tiny bit of knowledge of what Kalen DeBoer seems to
- 25:27Speaker 2: be like, I bet Kalen DeBoer at Alabama is just like, yeah,
- 25:30Speaker 2: I don't think I'm going to mess with this. He's
- 25:33Speaker 2: a high school pipeline type guy. That's what he wants.
- 25:36Speaker 2: He'll take the transfers because you have to now, right?
- 25:39Speaker 2: Dabo Swinney is not like, let me get as many
- 25:42Speaker 2: of these pro players coming back. He didn't even want
- 25:44Speaker 2: transfers for the first few years.
- 25:46Speaker 3: Dabo is going to be the guy who's going to,
- 25:51Speaker 3: whether it's feigning, being principled about this, or it's actually genuine.
- 25:56Speaker 2: He's going to be loud about, we're not doing that
- 25:59Speaker 2: at Clemson. All right. They're not coming to our death Valley.
- 26:03Speaker 2: They can go to the other death Valley. LSU is the,
- 26:08Speaker 2: the wild, wild West of the wild, wild West, whatever,
- 26:12Speaker 2: whatever the craziest saloon ridden outlawed den of the old
- 26:17Speaker 2: wild West. What was that? Deadwood. Was it Ogden? Dodge city, Kansas,
- 26:23Speaker 2: Dodge city. That is LSU. Now the name of it from,
- 26:26Speaker 2: from white Earp or LSU was just, LSU was just like,
- 26:31Speaker 2: Come here. RJ Louise. Tell me why RJ Louise. Oh
- 26:35Speaker 2: my gosh. Who signed multiple NBA contracts.
- 26:38Speaker 3: Wasn't he former a jazz man for a half a
- 26:41Speaker 3: minute or am I thinking of a different Lewis Louise?
- 26:45Speaker 2: I don't remember. There was someone he's, he's been granted
- 26:50Speaker 2: a temporary injunction and play college basketball. Guess where LSU
- 26:54Speaker 2: LSU and will Wade.
- 26:57Speaker 3: Former LSU head coach, and again, bounce back head coach
- 27:00Speaker 3: for LSU.
- 27:01Speaker 2: If you will, he is notorious. He was notorious for.
- 27:04Speaker 3: Doing anything and everything to get players before when he
- 27:08Speaker 3: was at LSU. So he he's that lane Kiffin type
- 27:12Speaker 3: player in the basketball side.
- 27:13Speaker 2: So I'm going to give you, this is going to
- 27:15Speaker 2: be a long quote, but just bear with me from
- 27:17Speaker 2: an sec phone call with presidents and chancellors in a
- 27:23Speaker 2: video conference. College athletes, not former professional athletes, have been
- 27:29Speaker 2: at the heart of Southeastern Conference. Individuals who choose to
- 27:32Speaker 2: leave college athletics, sign professional playing contracts, and compete professionally
- 27:37Speaker 2: should not be then permitted to return to college competition.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Wording matters. They should not be allowed. Not yet saying,
- 27:47Speaker 2: we are not going to allow them to play at
- 27:48Speaker 2: the SEC. They're saying, they should not be allowed. Allowing
- 27:52Speaker 2: that to occur will blur the line between college and
- 27:54Speaker 2: professional sports. Newsflash, that's been happening for years. Create significant
- 27:59Speaker 2: competitive equity concerns and reduce opportunities for high school and
- 28:03Speaker 2: current college athletes. That's a problem that nobody wants to
- 28:06Speaker 2: address and nobody wants to talk about. College sports are
- 28:09Speaker 2: for college athletes. The current confusion around eligibility standards emphasizes
- 28:14Speaker 2: the need to advance the Protect College Sports Act. So suddenly,
- 28:18Speaker 2: presidents and chancellors in the SEC are on board with
- 28:22Speaker 2: the Protect College Sports Act, which, remember, under the revised
- 28:25Speaker 2: language does allow five years to play five, which started
- 28:30Speaker 2: this problem in the first place because a lot of
- 28:33Speaker 2: guys who thought they were done now are looking at
- 28:35Speaker 2: their peers and saying, well, that guy that was on
- 28:37Speaker 2: my team last year is going to have five years
- 28:40Speaker 2: just because I graduated in May means I'm not going
- 28:44Speaker 2: to have five years. No, give me five years, right? Again,
- 28:49Speaker 2: these presidents and chancellors are deciding, well, we have to
- 28:52Speaker 2: draw the line at the timeline, right? I possess no
- 28:56Speaker 2: infinity stones. We're not going to go back, and we're
- 28:59Speaker 2: not going to fix all of this. These people who
- 29:01Speaker 2: never got their five years of eligibility.
- 29:03Speaker 3: By the way, if you do come up with the
- 29:05Speaker 3: infinity stones, if you happen to, just be careful snapping.
- 29:08Speaker 2: Don't snap your fingers.
- 29:10Speaker 3: We don't want half the universe to just disappear.
- 29:13Speaker 2: So the SEC presidents and chancellors are going to meet
- 29:18Speaker 2: on Tuesday and on Wednesday. These meetings had already been
- 29:22Speaker 2: scheduled and they're going to, I assume, come up with
- 29:25Speaker 2: some sort of thing that the Big Ten is rolling
- 29:27Speaker 2: out today that says, no, Moss, we're not signing these athletes.
- 29:32Speaker 2: And then they're going to have one of their member institutions,
- 29:34Speaker 2: at least probably multiple, but one especially that happens to
- 29:37Speaker 2: be a pretty darn good program at LSU. And one
- 29:40Speaker 2: of the more high profile headline generating programs, they're going
- 29:44Speaker 2: to say in Baton Rouge, well, hold on a minute.
- 29:48Speaker 2: I already gave this guy a spot on the roster.
- 29:50Speaker 2: I already signed an NIL agreement with this. He already
- 29:53Speaker 2: signed up for classes. He's already enrolled. We learned that.
- 29:59Speaker 2: being enrolled in classes doesn't really stop a transfer movement
- 30:01Speaker 2: very much, but like the sec right now, as far
- 30:06Speaker 2: as I'm aware, the big 10 does not have a
- 30:10Speaker 2: pipeline of guys that are on the bounce back that
- 30:12Speaker 2: are like, yeah, I'm going to go play for Ohio state.
- 30:14Speaker 2: Part of the reason for that is because Ohio state
- 30:19Speaker 2: already got pros at Ohio state. So it's already loaded
- 30:22Speaker 2: up with pros. Kyle Whittingham at Michigan, one of the
- 30:25Speaker 2: other blue blood programs is not going to be this dude.
- 30:29Speaker 2: Absolutely not.
- 30:30Speaker 5: Right.
- 30:30Speaker 2: He's just not. I don't think Kurt Cignetti at Indiana
- 30:36Speaker 2: is going to do this either. I don't think so.
- 30:38Speaker 2: He strikes me as more like Kyle Whittingham. If you're
- 30:42Speaker 2: like the SEC, if you're Wisconsin or you're Northwestern with
- 30:46Speaker 2: Chip Kelly, you're like, you know what? We need something
- 30:50Speaker 2: to help us get ahead. So maybe those types of
- 30:53Speaker 2: schools are going to explore this a little bit more.
- 30:56Speaker 2: Campbell Penn state.
- 30:57Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 30:58Speaker 2: But if you're in the SEC that has traditionally and always,
- 31:03Speaker 2: going back to the beginning of football history, been willing
- 31:06Speaker 2: to do whatever is possible, even outside of the rules,
- 31:10Speaker 2: to make your teams as dominant as possible, it is
- 31:14Speaker 2: a massive, massive statement coming from SEC country that that
- 31:19Speaker 2: group is willing to say, this shouldn't be happening. Let's
- 31:25Speaker 2: examine this. They haven't put a rule in place yet.
- 31:28Speaker 2: They haven't declared that they're going to put a rule
- 31:30Speaker 2: in place yet. But presidents and chancellors saying this is
- 31:35Speaker 2: not good for college athletics is the most progressive thing
- 31:40Speaker 2: we have heard from the SEC in 50 years. Yeah,
- 31:44Speaker 2: it's shocking.
- 31:46Speaker 3: When I read it, OC, I was like, are we
- 31:50Speaker 3: sure this is the SEC who made this statement? Especially
- 31:54Speaker 3: Because it came after Lane Kiffin unabashedly said, yeah, of
- 31:58Speaker 3: course I'm going after him. If I don't, someone else will,
- 32:00Speaker 3: which you can't say that Lane's wrong there. You can't
- 32:04Speaker 3: fault that line of thinking at all. But, yeah, it's
- 32:09Speaker 3: gotten way too out of hand, OC, and I don't
- 32:13Speaker 3: have a lot of hope that it's going to be
- 32:15Speaker 3: reined in anytime soon. I love that the Big Ten
- 32:18Speaker 3: is doing– from a conference level is saying we're drawing
- 32:23Speaker 3: this line. It's not a blurry line. It's a solid
- 32:25Speaker 3: line that we will not cross. My question is when
- 32:31Speaker 3: are big 10 schools and the big 10 conference going
- 32:33Speaker 3: to be sued by some of these players who want
- 32:35Speaker 3: to bounce back from the pros and then they can't,
- 32:38Speaker 3: and then they can't actually stand by that line that
- 32:40Speaker 3: they drew.
- 32:41Speaker 2: Well, that's the thing. This protect college sports act is,
- 32:44Speaker 2: that now the sec and the big 10 are behind
- 32:47Speaker 2: after some modified language, some going back and forth to
- 32:51Speaker 2: protect college sports act. Part of what it does is
- 32:55Speaker 2: it becomes federal statute, right? Where these district court judges
- 33:02Speaker 2: and these local.
- 33:03Speaker 3: Judges from Colorado, it doesn't met like, That doesn't matter.
- 33:07Speaker 3: And also you're probably not getting that.
- 33:08Speaker 2: Injunction, right? Because that judge is going to be like, well,
- 33:11Speaker 2: this doesn't go anywhere anyway. So yeah, that's so maybe
- 33:15Speaker 2: this is the thing that gets it across the finish line.
- 33:18Speaker 2: And you know, it's funny, James, notice this, follow the money.
- 33:23Speaker 2: This was already a question and already an issue in
- 33:25Speaker 2: college basketball.
- 33:27Speaker 4: Oh yeah.
- 33:27Speaker 2: And it wasn't enough to push this over the finish line.
- 33:30Speaker 2: Now that it's becoming an issue for college football. Now
- 33:34Speaker 2: everyone has taken a real stand. Isn't it funny how
- 33:37Speaker 2: that works? Even though basketball and March madness specifically is
- 33:41Speaker 2: a multi-billion dollar affair. It is only rules that will
- 33:45Speaker 2: affect football that actually matter when it comes to college sports.
- 33:49Speaker 3: Hey, what about these bounce back pro gymnasts? Oh, see
- 33:53Speaker 3: like that. I that's a huge problem in the, in
- 33:56Speaker 3: the gymnast world.
- 33:57Speaker 2: Okay.
- 33:58Speaker 6: Good.
- 33:58Speaker 2: Good.
- 33:59Speaker 6: Yeah, maybe.
- 33:59Speaker 2: I don't know if that's the case.
- 34:01Speaker 3: By the way, speaking of the term bounce back, Derek,
- 34:04Speaker 3: our guy Derek, who texts every day. We love you, Derek,
- 34:07Speaker 3: by the way. We appreciate you. He said, let's call
- 34:10Speaker 3: them what they are, non-college pro players.
- 34:13Speaker 2: Okay.
- 34:13Speaker 3: That's what I was going to chime in with, too, OC.
- 34:17Speaker 3: Why don't we just call them pros instead of bounce
- 34:19Speaker 3: back players? And then we got an email from Lewis.
- 34:25Speaker 3: Not bounce back players. boomerang players.
- 34:28Speaker 2: Good day. This is Lewis.
- 34:33Speaker 3: This is Lewis by email or excuse me. I think
- 34:37Speaker 3: the last name it came in L Lewis Lewis might
- 34:41Speaker 3: be his last name.
- 34:41Speaker 2: Mr.
- 34:42Speaker 5: Lewis.
- 34:45Speaker 2: Henceforth, the bounce back player will be known as a
- 34:48Speaker 2: boomerang player.
- 34:49Speaker 3: And we got to say it with the accent might.
- 34:51Speaker 2: Boomerang players might good night.
- 34:55Speaker 4: On, yeah.
- 34:56Speaker 2: All right. So they are officially called boomerang players here
- 34:59Speaker 2: on the shot.
- 35:02Speaker 3: I saw this on Twitter. You and you and Zachariah
- 35:04Speaker 3: had a little argument over nicknames for Australia.
- 35:09Speaker 2: Can I give context to this for a second? So
- 35:12Speaker 2: our guy, Zachariah, some of you listened to him and
- 35:16Speaker 2: some of you made it so that he would no
- 35:17Speaker 2: longer fill in for me because you were so critical
- 35:20Speaker 2: of his style.
- 35:21Speaker 3: And I'm mad at you for that because he's got
- 35:23Speaker 3: a great podcast. As I understand, he's, he's on the
- 35:26Speaker 3: comeback here.
- 35:27Speaker 2: Love me some Zachariah. He's a wild, he's a complete
- 35:30Speaker 2: wild card and a total Yahoo. And we were somehow
- 35:34Speaker 2: talking about, uh, Oh, we were talking about some rugby
- 35:39Speaker 2: player or some situation that was going on with an
- 35:42Speaker 2: Australian athlete.
- 35:43Speaker 3: Right.
- 35:44Speaker 2: And he has some weird connection, like a brother-in-law or
- 35:48Speaker 2: whatever that, is either from there or there was a person.
- 35:53Speaker 2: And I was like, I, in the text thread, I
- 35:55Speaker 2: was like, does he actually live in Oz? And Zachariah
- 36:03Speaker 2: was just like, what, what is that? And I was like,
- 36:05Speaker 2: what are you talking about?
- 36:06Speaker 3: You mean like, you mean like where, uh, where the
- 36:08Speaker 3: wicked witch of the West lives? Is that what you're saying?
- 36:10Speaker 2: I was like in Australia. He's like, What?
- 36:14Speaker 5: No.
- 36:14Speaker 2: What are you talking about? I'm like, Oz, dude. Everyone.
- 36:17Speaker 2: It's Oz. It's one of the nicknames. It's down under.
- 36:20Speaker 2: It's Oz. He's like, I didn't know that. I was like,
- 36:22Speaker 2: how are you 42 years old? You didn't know that.
- 36:25Speaker 3: So I didn't know this either. But I'm also not
- 36:29Speaker 3: yet 42 years old.
- 36:30Speaker 2: So I was like, everyone knows that one of the
- 36:32Speaker 2: nicknames of Australia is Oz. And if you refer to
- 36:37Speaker 2: Oz as a place, they know you're talking about Australia.
- 36:39Speaker 2: And he's like, that's not true. Nobody knows that. So
- 36:42Speaker 2: he put it on his podcast, he put it on
- 36:44Speaker 2: a Twitter poll, and I got blown out of the water.
- 36:47Speaker 2: It was like 80% to 20% that people didn't know
- 36:51Speaker 2: that Oz was Australia.
- 36:52Speaker 3: Do we need to call one of your Australian friends?
- 36:55Speaker 3: Because you no doubt have an Australian friend, the amount
- 36:58Speaker 3: you travel.
- 36:59Speaker 2: I've got a couple of Australian friends. We need to
- 37:02Speaker 2: get Tom Hackett on the line, actually. We did a
- 37:04Speaker 2: show in this very studio with Tom Hackett.
- 37:07Speaker 3: We need to get Tom on the line just to
- 37:09Speaker 3: ask him... What are the nicknames for Australia? And is
- 37:13Speaker 3: Oz one of them? Anyway, that's where that came from.
- 37:16Speaker 3: We're way, way over time.
- 37:17Speaker 2: Good night. The SEC and the big 10 and the
- 37:20Speaker 2: big 12 at the ACC all either are putting rules
- 37:25Speaker 2: out today, or they're at least meeting to examine the
- 37:27Speaker 2: possibility of rules against boomerang players, pro athletes coming back
- 37:33Speaker 2: to college sports. This is attendant to Noam Yakov being
- 37:38Speaker 2: ruled ineligible at the University of Utah. Meanwhile, LSU's got R.J. Lewis,
- 37:44Speaker 2: who is eligible because of a temporary injunction. You see
- 37:47Speaker 2: the inconsistencies and the problems here. What can fix it?
- 37:52Speaker 2: What can save it? Well, apparently the Protect College Sports
- 37:55Speaker 2: Act is our best chance. We're going to focus in
- 37:58Speaker 2: more on Utah football and this season specifically. One of
- 38:02Speaker 2: the great existential questions of this season is how good
- 38:06Speaker 2: will the offensive line be? One of the stats we
- 38:09Speaker 2: use to indicate the health of an offensive line is
- 38:12Speaker 2: sacks allowed. How many sacks will this Utah football offensive
- 38:17Speaker 2: line surrender in 2026? We'll get to that conversation next
- 38:22Speaker 2: on the Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 700, 92.1 FM. That's
- 38:31Speaker 2: me in.
- 38:32Speaker 5: The spotlight, losing my religion.
- 38:40Speaker 7: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 38:43Speaker 7: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Oh no, I've said too much. Welcome back to the
- 38:59Speaker 2: Sean O'Connell show. How many sacks is the Utah offensive
- 39:03Speaker 2: line going to give up in the 2026 season? I
- 39:06Speaker 2: have set the over under at 19 and a half sacks, 877-353-0700.
- 39:09Speaker 2: If you want to hit the over 19 and a half,
- 39:10Speaker 2: 20 or more, if you think Utah will keep it
- 39:12Speaker 2: under 19 sacks allowed, tell me under. Or go to
- 39:26Speaker 2: at RealOCSports on Twitter and click your vote on that.
- 39:30Speaker 2: the Twitter poll. Or do both. That's the best way
- 39:32Speaker 2: to do it.
- 39:32Speaker 3: 877-353-0700.
- 39:32Speaker 2: Now, a couple of things to think about here when
- 39:38Speaker 2: you make your prognostication. In 2025, the Utah offensive line
- 39:44Speaker 2: with two first round draft picks starting at left and
- 39:48Speaker 2: right tackle for you. gave up 14 sacks. If you
- 39:53Speaker 2: remember this time last year, we were talking about how
- 39:55Speaker 2: Devin Dampier was the most elusive quarterback in all of
- 40:00Speaker 2: college football at New Mexico. He was sacked four times
- 40:04Speaker 2: at New Mexico. I think that offensive line gave up
- 40:07Speaker 2: a total of six sacks on the season, and I
- 40:10Speaker 2: think Devin was only responsible for four of those. Now,
- 40:13Speaker 2: that was the much more mobile Devin Dampier. The injuries
- 40:18Speaker 2: and the affected mobility certainly had something to do with
- 40:22Speaker 2: Devin getting sacked more. Also, stepping up to a new
- 40:25Speaker 2: level of competition where the defenders are better, where the
- 40:30Speaker 2: coverages are better, where the coaching is better, where the
- 40:33Speaker 2: disguising of the blitzes is all better, right? So, Devin
- 40:39Speaker 2: Dampier gave up more or got sacked more at Utah.
- 40:43Speaker 2: than he did at New Mexico, even though his offensive
- 40:46Speaker 2: line at Utah was significantly better. 14 sacks surrendered by
- 40:50Speaker 2: Utah last year. Why did I set it at 19
- 40:55Speaker 2: and a half if last year they gave up 14? Well,
- 40:58Speaker 2: it's a brand new offensive line, reason number one. And
- 41:03Speaker 2: all of these over-unders, I'm trying to see if your prediction,
- 41:07Speaker 2: your prognostication for Utah football statistically keeps them in the
- 41:12Speaker 2: top five.
- 41:13Speaker 3: All right.
- 41:14Speaker 2: Cincinnati only gave up eight sacks last year. Kansas State
- 41:18Speaker 2: gave up 13. Utah gave up 14. BYU gave up 16.
- 41:22Speaker 2: Houston and Kansas both gave up 19. And UCF gave
- 41:27Speaker 2: up 20. So the line of were you top five
- 41:31Speaker 2: or tied for top five at least is 19 sacks
- 41:34Speaker 2: from last year. And I know I'm playing into recency bias,
- 41:38Speaker 2: whereas the year previous to that, 19 sacks. Remember this
- 41:42Speaker 2: was a more aggressive passing year in the conference. Teams
- 41:45Speaker 2: were passing a lot more in the conference in 2024.
- 41:50Speaker 2: The year prior to last Utah gave up 25 sacks
- 41:56Speaker 2: and 19 sacks, which is our line of demarcation on
- 42:00Speaker 2: my over under question would have been good for top
- 42:03Speaker 2: seven rather than top five. Are you giving up an
- 42:12Speaker 2: extra five sacks over what you had last year? Well,
- 42:16Speaker 2: traditional logic would tell you that replacing all five starters
- 42:19Speaker 2: on an offensive line, yeah, you probably will. You look
- 42:22Speaker 2: a little bit deeper into it. You acknowledge the quick
- 42:25Speaker 2: passing game of Kevin McGiven's offense. And the priority that
- 42:30Speaker 2: they're going to put on getting the ball out of
- 42:32Speaker 2: the pocket quickly. Also the fact that Devin Dampier has
- 42:36Speaker 2: told us himself, he feels a lot healthier and we'll
- 42:39Speaker 2: probably back to be back to his more elusive ways.
- 42:42Speaker 2: Potentially that then brings the number back down. If you
- 42:47Speaker 2: want to really look at it aggressively, you say, all right, well,
- 42:51Speaker 2: where was Kevin McGibbon last year? And what were the
- 42:55Speaker 2: sacks allowed numbers like at Utah state? And that will
- 43:01Speaker 2: give you a little bit of a heart attack. 42
- 43:06Speaker 2: sacks allowed dead last in the Mountain West Conference last year.
- 43:11Speaker 2: Bryson Barnes, as an individual starting quarterback, was the fourth
- 43:17Speaker 2: most sacked QB in all of college football last year.
- 43:23Speaker 2: Neither of those are stats you want to be a
- 43:25Speaker 2: part of. Now it's also not necessarily an indicator that
- 43:34Speaker 2: your quarterback is doing anything wrong or as bad, or
- 43:37Speaker 2: it's just, you know, the offensive line play playbook. A
- 43:40Speaker 2: lot of these things come into play here. Mobility. Lenora
- 43:44Speaker 2: sellers is a highly thought of quarterback, right? He gave up.
- 43:48Speaker 2: He was sacked 42 times last year. That's that's insane.
- 43:52Speaker 3: Especially because he has that unbelievable mobility thing to him.
- 43:59Speaker 3: you'd expect a guy to be elusive enough to avoid
- 44:03Speaker 3: being sacked that much, but it just goes to show
- 44:05Speaker 3: there's a number of factors that go into this.
- 44:07Speaker 2: So he was three, number three in the country, third
- 44:10Speaker 2: most sacked. Bryson Barnes was four, as I mentioned. I'm
- 44:13Speaker 2: leaving out the names that you don't recognize or you
- 44:16Speaker 2: have not heard, but guys that, like Jaron Kiave Sangapolitele
- 44:23Speaker 2: at Cal, he is going to be a Heisman Trophy
- 44:26Speaker 2: finalist this year, okay? That guy... was sacked 30 times.
- 44:31Speaker 2: Noah Fafita at Arizona, another person with some escapability mobility.
- 44:35Speaker 2: He was sacked 29 times at Arizona last year. And
- 44:39Speaker 2: they had an offense. They had an NFL offensive lineman
- 44:43Speaker 2: on their own line. Talon Green, the former Boise State quarterback,
- 44:46Speaker 2: who's now at Arkansas, incredibly mobile guy. He was sacked
- 44:50Speaker 2: 27 times. Darian Mensah, now at Miami, formerly at Duke.
- 44:55Speaker 2: He was sacked 27 times. Nico Iamaliaba, he was also
- 44:59Speaker 2: sacked 27 times. So there's multiple factors that play into this.
- 45:03Speaker 2: And I was looking at this total. I was looking
- 45:06Speaker 2: at what Utah has done with great offensive lines, what
- 45:09Speaker 2: Utah has done with escapable quarterbacks. what Utah has done
- 45:14Speaker 2: when they're more of a pass heavy offense versus a
- 45:16Speaker 2: run heavy offense in terms of surrendering sacks. And of
- 45:20Speaker 2: course I want to keep them in that top five
- 45:23Speaker 2: range for the big 12 conference. So 19 and a
- 45:26Speaker 2: half over or under giving up 19 and a half
- 45:28Speaker 2: sacks as a Utah offense this year, James, let's say I'm.
- 45:34Speaker 3: Going to say under, I, we were talking about this
- 45:38Speaker 3: off arrow. See, it's funny that, Another reason why it's
- 45:41Speaker 3: funny that that's the number is because you mentioned it,
- 45:46Speaker 3: Devin Dampier, we were raving about how he was an
- 45:49Speaker 3: unsackable guy at New Mexico, and we were raving about
- 45:54Speaker 3: just how good this offensive line is, Fano and Lomo
- 45:57Speaker 3: at the tackles, and we were joking that maybe he
- 46:01Speaker 3: doesn't get sacked all year because of the talent on
- 46:03Speaker 3: the offensive line and because he proved to be darn
- 46:06Speaker 3: near unsackable. At New Mexico with a lot lesser offensive line. Also, though,
- 46:12Speaker 3: a lot lesser pass rush talent that he's playing against
- 46:16Speaker 3: for sure had some to do with that. He gets
- 46:19Speaker 3: sacked 13 times. I think we both said somewhere around
- 46:23Speaker 3: eight or nine is what we predicted last year.
- 46:25Speaker 2: I think last year, all those factors last year, I
- 46:27Speaker 2: believe I set the over under at nine and a
- 46:30Speaker 2: half because it was like, are you going to be
- 46:32Speaker 2: in double digits? Are you going to stay under double digits?
- 46:34Speaker 2: We both went under.
- 46:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 46:35Speaker 3: And they ended up with the over, but only by
- 46:38Speaker 3: only by a little bit there, those only given up
- 46:41Speaker 3: 14 sacks is still, is still really good. So anyway,
- 46:44Speaker 3: it's just really interesting. Same quarterback and the, Over under
- 46:48Speaker 3: is 10 more, but it's not the same old line, right?
- 46:53Speaker 3: The other thing you got to think about is Devin
- 46:57Speaker 3: is a lot healthier now, as you would expect, than
- 47:01Speaker 3: he was for most of last season, where his own
- 47:04Speaker 3: father is quoted by Jason Batacchio in the Salt Lake
- 47:07Speaker 3: Tribune as saying, I don't think I saw him ever
- 47:09Speaker 3: play more than 70% healthy last season because of the
- 47:13Speaker 3: multiple sports hernias and the ankle injury. that was hampering
- 47:17Speaker 3: him all year long. So all that, despite the questions
- 47:24Speaker 3: about the offensive line, that just will not be answered
- 47:26Speaker 3: until we see them play. The other stuff about Devin
- 47:30Speaker 3: makes me feel like it's going to be under I'm
- 47:32Speaker 3: it's obviously, I'm not going to be as bold as
- 47:34Speaker 3: I was last year and be like, Oh yeah, it's
- 47:36Speaker 3: single digits, but I think it'll be under 19.
- 47:38Speaker 2: If you go back to 2024, guess who the most
- 47:42Speaker 2: sacked person in the country was 2024. It It wasn't
- 47:46Speaker 2: Bryson Barnes. It was Shador Sanders door. Oh, that's right.
- 47:50Speaker 2: 42 times. He was sacked. Guess who was number two.
- 47:54Speaker 2: You'll never guess this Fernando Mendoza while he was still
- 47:57Speaker 2: at Cal was the second most sacked quarterback in the
- 48:01Speaker 2: entire country. He got sacked 41 times. So what you're
- 48:05Speaker 2: saying is you get sacked near the most in the country.
- 48:08Speaker 2: One year, the next year you'll win the Heisman trophy.
- 48:10Speaker 2: That's that's what you're saying. That's right. Which means who
- 48:13Speaker 2: was number two last year? Um, So that means this
- 48:19Speaker 2: year's Heisman based on that, that measurable, uh, Jacob Clark
- 48:25Speaker 2: from Missouri state is going to win the Heisman this year.
- 48:28Speaker 6: Yep.
- 48:28Speaker 3: That was just right on the tip of my tongue.
- 48:30Speaker 3: I was about to say my that's my Heisman pick
- 48:33Speaker 3: for this year.
- 48:33Speaker 2: Jacob Clark.
- 48:34Speaker 3: You know, it's funny that why we're having this discussion. Oh,
- 48:38Speaker 3: see on the Dan Patrick show, they got to talking
- 48:40Speaker 3: about David Carr, who was the most sacked man in.
- 48:43Speaker 2: NFL history, which by the way, thank goodness, because prior
- 48:46Speaker 2: to him, Alex Smith was on a row. Was he really?
- 48:50Speaker 3: So David, David Carr, do you know, he was sacked
- 48:54Speaker 3: 76 times in the season, just beat up. And then
- 49:00Speaker 3: a couple of years later, maybe the next season, it
- 49:02Speaker 3: was 68, the third most ever in one season.
- 49:05Speaker 2: So yeah, that guy was just beat up.
- 49:09Speaker 3: I that's a guy that anyone who's an NFL fan
- 49:12Speaker 3: from the early to mid two thousands, that's a guy
- 49:15Speaker 3: you always go. Who do you feel the most sorry
- 49:18Speaker 3: for as an NFL fan? in like NFL history and
- 49:21Speaker 3: for me it's David Carr like he just he got
- 49:25Speaker 3: put in an expansion team situation with the Houston Texans
- 49:29Speaker 3: they had nothing around him he was obviously a great
- 49:31Speaker 3: talent and just dropped back and dropped it got dropped
- 49:35Speaker 3: down David Carr, like you said, number one and number three,
- 49:39Speaker 3: 72 and 68. Randall Cunningham was sacked 72 times in 1986.
- 49:45Speaker 3: Caleb Williams was sacked 68 times in 2024. Tied for
- 49:49Speaker 3: the Chicago Bears. Tied for third with David Carr, yeah.
- 49:53Speaker 2: That's a bad deal.
- 49:55Speaker 3: And then one other thing. You mentioned Bryson Barnes was
- 49:58Speaker 3: near the top last season. That's a guy that, especially
- 50:02Speaker 3: that 2024 season, OC is last one. Or was that 2023?
- 50:09Speaker 3: One of his last year at Utah, 2023. It just
- 50:12Speaker 3: felt like he got hit over and over again.
- 50:14Speaker 2: Then too.
- 50:15Speaker 3: Unfortunately for Bryson Barnes, he just seems like he always
- 50:18Speaker 3: just got hit a lot whenever he played, but tough
- 50:21Speaker 3: as nails, man. That's what was so endearing about Bryson
- 50:24Speaker 3: Barnes as a Utah football player is he just always
- 50:28Speaker 3: got up and he always just, did his best every
- 50:33Speaker 3: single play, even though at the Pac-12 level anyway, he
- 50:37Speaker 3: just wasn't quite talented enough to be a viable starting quarterback.
- 50:41Speaker 3: But he's just tough as nails, man. And he just
- 50:44Speaker 3: unfortunately always got hit, it seemed like.
- 50:46Speaker 2: He did not make the top 25 of sacks taken
- 50:50Speaker 2: in the 2023 season. Shador Sanders was number two that year.
- 50:56Speaker 2: He's the David Carr of college football. Is that what's
- 50:59Speaker 2: going on there? Am I starting to feel bad for
- 51:02Speaker 2: Shador Sanders? Is that what's happening right here on the show?
- 51:05Speaker 4: Live?
- 51:06Speaker 2: That's an uncomfortable place for me to be. You know
- 51:13Speaker 2: who deserves an advocate? Maybe Shador Sanders deserves an advocate.
- 51:18Speaker 2: If you have been in an accident, if you've been
- 51:20Speaker 2: jogging and tripped over something on the sidewalk... that caused
- 51:24Speaker 2: an injury for you. If you've been shopping in a
- 51:27Speaker 2: store and there was a spill that caused you to
- 51:30Speaker 2: slip and pull a hammy, and maybe you had to
- 51:33Speaker 2: see the doctor for whatever it is, you may be
- 51:36Speaker 2: entitled to some compensation.
- 51:38Speaker 3: 801-355-5550.
- 51:38Speaker 2: Or you can go to utahadvocates.com. Consultation is available 24 seven,
- 51:41Speaker 2: three 65. They are no cost consultations. You don't pay
- 51:50Speaker 2: a dime out of pocket while the advocates work on
- 51:53Speaker 2: recovering compensation that you deserve. It's only after the case,
- 51:56Speaker 2: after the award has been given. If you're In a
- 52:01Speaker 2: neighborhood with a lot of dogs and maybe you've got
- 52:03Speaker 2: that annoying neighbor dog that bit you on the foot
- 52:06Speaker 2: and it got a little infected and you had to
- 52:07Speaker 2: get some antibiotics for it. We know that you don't
- 52:10Speaker 2: want to go out and you don't want to be
- 52:12Speaker 2: overly litigious and you don't want to attack people that
- 52:15Speaker 2: are in your neighborhood. But guess what? It's the insurance
- 52:17Speaker 2: companies that are denying these claims and refusing to pay
- 52:20Speaker 2: things out. That's why you need the advocates to help
- 52:23Speaker 2: you along the way. motorcycle accident, auto accident, shopping accident,
- 52:29Speaker 2: jogging accident, accident of any kind. You do not deserve
- 52:32Speaker 2: to be in an accident, but you do deserve an advocate.
- 52:36Speaker 2: 801-355-5550 or utahadvocates.com. Tell them OC sent you. Some of
- 52:44Speaker 2: your reaction on this sack total question I just put
- 52:46Speaker 2: out there. Over or under 19.5 sacks surrendered by the
- 52:50Speaker 2: University of Utah this year. Tell me what you think.
- 52:52Speaker 2: ESPN 700, 92.1 FM. It's a nice day for a
- 52:57Speaker 2: white wedding.
- 52:59Speaker 7: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 53:02Speaker 7: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 53:17Speaker 2: 78-78 says under 19 and a half sacks. I don't
- 53:21Speaker 2: think by much. Maybe 15 to 17 allowed. Astute observation
- 53:27Speaker 2: from texter two zero four seven. Last year's total of
- 53:30Speaker 2: 14 was tied for the lowest number. 2025, 2021, 2002,
- 53:36Speaker 2: all very low numbers, 14 sacks. 2047 says, I guess
- 53:42Speaker 2: we'll have about 20. So he's going slightly over. I
- 53:48Speaker 2: mean about 20 or 20 is over. He's hitting the over,
- 53:53Speaker 2: which is why 19 and a half is the number
- 53:55Speaker 2: I said it at because I We all think that
- 53:57Speaker 2: there's going to be some mobility, some escapability, and hopefully
- 54:02Speaker 2: not too many sacks taken. But 20 is still a
- 54:06Speaker 2: good year. Absolutely. 20 is still a great season if
- 54:09Speaker 2: you can only give up 20. If you can give
- 54:12Speaker 2: up in the teens, it's an even better year. By
- 54:17Speaker 2: the way. lowest sacks.
- 54:19Speaker 3: I mean, how much did you have to do with
- 54:21Speaker 3: the 2014 that only allowed 10 sacks?
- 54:24Speaker 2: That was all me. It was all you. You're you're
- 54:26Speaker 2: clapping really hard on the sidelines. No, you know what
- 54:29Speaker 2: it was? You know what it was is that I
- 54:31Speaker 2: was the guy blitzing on scout team during the week.
- 54:35Speaker 2: You were getting them ready and they never saw a
- 54:38Speaker 2: blitz that incredible. So it was just like, if you
- 54:41Speaker 2: could stop my blitz, when you got to game day,
- 54:45Speaker 2: easy work. Urban Meyer said as much to you, I'm sure,
- 54:49Speaker 2: one time. Probably not. Probably not. To give it some context,
- 54:56Speaker 2: all right, let's go back to 2022, shall we? That year,
- 55:02Speaker 2: Oregon gave up five sacks. There were 20 teams nationally
- 55:09Speaker 2: that gave up 15 or fewer sacks in that 2022 season.
- 55:13Speaker 2: Utah happened to be one of them. You look at
- 55:17Speaker 2: the 2023 year and again, not a whole lot of
- 55:24Speaker 2: teams under that 19 and a half number. You have
- 55:27Speaker 2: to be BYU was number 30 in the country tied
- 55:32Speaker 2: for number 30 in the country with 19 sacks allowed.
- 55:35Speaker 2: So you got to be like, you're a top 25,
- 55:38Speaker 2: top 30 team in terms of protection. If you're giving
- 55:41Speaker 2: up the under, if you're hitting the over now you're
- 55:44Speaker 2: outside of that box, right? You go to the 2024 season,
- 55:49Speaker 2: there were 35 teams in the country that gave up
- 55:54Speaker 2: 19 or fewer sacks. You know what's crazy? I didn't
- 55:58Speaker 2: do this on purpose, but Utah State was at 20 sacks.
- 56:05Speaker 2: BYU was at 19 sacks in these years that I'm
- 56:08Speaker 2: looking at. It's like there's a local connection every time
- 56:11Speaker 2: I look at a number. It's freaking me out a
- 56:13Speaker 2: little bit. Last year, Utah had 14, as I already mentioned.
- 56:17Speaker 2: There were 27 teams in the country that had 19
- 56:20Speaker 2: or fewer last year. So are you staying in that category?
- 56:23Speaker 2: Are you staying top five in the big 12? Are
- 56:26Speaker 2: you staying top 25 ish in the country over or under?
- 56:31Speaker 2: Give me your answers based on that at real OC
- 56:33Speaker 2: sports or at eight, seven, seven, three, five, three, zero 700.
- 56:36Speaker 2: Jeff Schwartz played the offensive line position. We're going to
- 56:39Speaker 2: ask him if he thinks Utah with a brand new
- 56:43Speaker 2: offensive line, Jordan gross is the coach. Devin Dampier is
- 56:47Speaker 2: the quarterback. Will they give up over or under 19.5
- 56:50Speaker 2: sacks in the upcoming campaign? Jeff Schwartz next on ESPN
- 56:54Speaker 2: 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 57:01Speaker 4: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 57:04Speaker 4: best inside of your youths. Let's get back to OC
- 57:08Speaker 4: from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 57:15Speaker 2: Welcome to hour number two. Welcome in my good friend
- 57:17Speaker 2: Jeff Schwartz, former Oregon Duck, who will talk about what
- 57:22Speaker 2: The Athletic called his alma mater in an article yesterday.
- 57:27Speaker 2: Jeff Schwartz, welcome.
- 57:28Speaker 5: How are you?
- 57:29Speaker 6: I'm good, buddy. Getting ready for football this weekend, like
- 57:31Speaker 6: real football.
- 57:32Speaker 2: Real football. Week zero, TCU versus North Carolina. You live
- 57:38Speaker 2: in North Carolina. How much are people hyped over that matchup?
- 57:43Speaker 6: Oh, dude, it's dominating talking points. My kids come home
- 57:47Speaker 6: from school like, Dad, everyone's talking about North Carolina TCU.
- 57:51Speaker 6: I'm sure they are, buddy. No, I mean, no one.
- 57:54Speaker 6: I mean, I think people are just after the Lombardi stuff,
- 57:58Speaker 6: and I think just people from North Carolina just can't
- 58:00Speaker 6: wait for this to be over, you know, and, you know,
- 58:03Speaker 6: move on and find a different coach for this program.
- 58:09Speaker 2: I'm... I'm putting out over-unders for the Utah football program,
- 58:13Speaker 2: trying to hit some statistical predictions. And today's an important
- 58:17Speaker 2: one for you offensive line types. It's a brand-new unit,
- 58:21Speaker 2: brand-new offensive line coach. The anticipation is that Devin Dampier
- 58:26Speaker 2: is going to be healthier this year and more escapable,
- 58:29Speaker 2: more mobile. Last year, Utah gave up 14 sacks on
- 58:33Speaker 2: the season. New Mexico, a couple years back, gave up
- 58:37Speaker 2: five with him as their starting quarterback. And I'm setting
- 58:42Speaker 2: the total at 19.5, which would be good enough for
- 58:44Speaker 2: top five in last year's Big 12, top seven in
- 58:47Speaker 2: most years. It's usually kind of a top 25 nationally,
- 58:51Speaker 2: top 30 number if you give up fewer than 19 sacks,
- 58:55Speaker 2: or I should say 19 or fewer sacks since we're
- 58:57Speaker 2: doing over-under. What would you say? If you're predicting over
- 59:02Speaker 2: or under 19.5 sacks for Utah football in a year
- 59:05Speaker 2: where they've got all that new stuff up front?
- 59:09Speaker 6: I'd say under. Think about their schedule, first of all.
- 59:13Speaker 6: Who are you really fearful is going to rush the
- 59:15Speaker 6: passer in a way that really makes this unit stress?
- 59:20Speaker 6: I don't think there's a great answer for that. You
- 59:22Speaker 6: miss some of the better defenses in your conference, so
- 59:24Speaker 6: that's very helpful for this young group as well. You
- 59:27Speaker 6: mentioned Dan Peer being able to move and whatnot and
- 59:30Speaker 6: to create different ways to avoid sacks. And two, you know,
- 59:35Speaker 6: in college football, and really in all football, but, you know,
- 59:40Speaker 6: the way you can run the ball in college football,
- 59:42Speaker 6: that allows you to have very short third downs, right? And,
- 59:46Speaker 6: you know, a lot of times you have a short
- 59:48Speaker 6: third down and you don't get sacked on third and two, right?
- 59:51Speaker 6: You run the ball on third and two. Like you
- 59:52Speaker 6: do different things on third and two and third and
- 59:54Speaker 6: one than you would on third and seven, right? Like
- 59:56Speaker 6: when is Utah going to have a ton of pure
- 59:59Speaker 6: dropbacks now? The only thing that is tough about this
- 1:00:03Speaker 6: is sometimes quarterback scrambles run out of bounds. They can
- 1:00:09Speaker 6: be counted as sacks when they're not really sacks. That's
- 1:00:14Speaker 6: the one thing I worry about with anything like this.
- 1:00:16Speaker 6: But I think in the end I think under 19
- 1:00:19Speaker 6: is very doable for this Utah offensive line.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: It would be a big thing for this offense because
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: I think they are going to throw a little bit
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: more this year. Last year they were the number one
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: run offense in the Big 12 and a top five
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: run offense nationally. So I think you're going to pass
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: a little bit more this year. And if you can
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: keep that quarterback upright, you can keep that pocket clean,
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: and you can lean on his natural gifts as an
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: escape artist. I do think it's a number you can hit,
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: but– That's why I said it where it is, because
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: if you do good things, great things, potentially, if you don't,
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: I'd probably be a little disappointed by that.
- 1:00:55Speaker 6: What are the reports out of camp about the offensive line?
- 1:00:57Speaker 6: I'm obviously, you don't get to see very much and whatnot.
- 1:01:00Speaker 6: And I'm sure there's not much information. I did see
- 1:01:02Speaker 6: Jordan post a picture the other day with those guys
- 1:01:05Speaker 6: after camp. I saw that everyone looks excited for the season,
- 1:01:08Speaker 6: but what do you got from camp so far?
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: Well, depending on who you talk to, right, there's, a
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: certain level of optimism, I think a genuine level of optimism, but,
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: and maybe you can tell me, should we be concerned
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: about this or not? We are in game prep now,
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: and they are not really ready to say who the
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: best five are, who the starting five are camp ended
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: on Saturday. And now they're doing install and it's a
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: long install period, right? And you're going up against the
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: university of Idaho. So you could probably really extend your
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: camp and those position battles a couple of days if
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: you need to. But, I was really pressing hard on
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: some people and trying to get some information. Who are
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: the top five? We don't know yet. If you had
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: to start a group of five today, do you feel
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: comfortable that you have the right five? We're still figuring
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: that out. From a timeline perspective, is that a worry?
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: No.
- 1:02:05Speaker 6: Oregon's doing the same thing right now. Oregon, I think,
- 1:02:07Speaker 6: doesn't know who their starting five is going to be.
- 1:02:08Speaker 6: They have an idea of who it's going to be,
- 1:02:11Speaker 6: but You don't know sometimes until you actually play the game, Sean, right?
- 1:02:13Speaker 6: You don't know until you get guys that are in
- 1:02:16Speaker 6: there for a game. I mean, look, there are guys
- 1:02:18Speaker 6: that just aren't as good when the lights come on.
- 1:02:20Speaker 6: That's what it is, right? You've got to play those guys.
- 1:02:22Speaker 6: Some guys, there's young guys that are not ready to
- 1:02:25Speaker 6: play yet until they're ready to play. You've got to
- 1:02:27Speaker 6: give them those reps to see if they're ready to play.
- 1:02:28Speaker 6: So I wouldn't be surprised if Utah even uses the
- 1:02:31Speaker 6: first couple of games to rotate guys, right? I mean,
- 1:02:35Speaker 6: it's commonplace to play maybe eight offensive linemen early in
- 1:02:38Speaker 6: the season, right? You figure out. where your best guys are.
- 1:02:42Speaker 6: Maybe it's conditioning thing too. You want to make sure
- 1:02:44Speaker 6: you're in shape to play a full game. So you
- 1:02:46Speaker 6: just rotate guys through and you have the luxury of
- 1:02:49Speaker 6: doing that with some of your early seasons. It would
- 1:02:50Speaker 6: not surprise me if they didn't have like a firm group,
- 1:02:53Speaker 6: you know, for a couple of weeks.
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: I also, I'm going to bring back one that I
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: don't think we had an opportunity to talk about. Kelvin Obot,
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: who's the highest rated recruit in program history and is
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: an offensive lineman, played tackle in high school. We've heard
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: in spring that maybe they'll test him out at guard
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: a little bit. I also put an over-under on five-and-a-half
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: games started this year for Kelvin Obot. And a lot
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: of people were calling the under. And I really think
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: a guy like that, you're bringing him in to start
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: right away. I know it's harder on an offensive line
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: than in other positions, but I think it's going to
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: be over. I think he's going to start more than
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: half the season. That's why I said it at five-and-a-half.
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: What would your assumption be?
- 1:03:36Speaker 6: I mean, imagine they'd like him to play, right? And
- 1:03:39Speaker 6: there's no redshirt rule anymore, right? So you can play
- 1:03:42Speaker 6: as many games as you want and get that year back.
- 1:03:44Speaker 6: So I would..
- 1:03:46Speaker 5: He.
- 1:03:47Speaker 6: Knows Jordan Gross, obviously, right? He's the one who was
- 1:03:49Speaker 6: the Jordan coach in high school, right? So he knows Jordan.
- 1:03:53Speaker 6: That plays a role in this, right? Just having a
- 1:03:55Speaker 6: familiarity with the offensive line coach, I would imagine, can't
- 1:03:58Speaker 6: hurt you, you know, in this situation. I think that
- 1:04:02Speaker 6: Utah would love if this was over, right? They would
- 1:04:04Speaker 6: love that if he played... I should say more than
- 1:04:07Speaker 6: five games.
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: I think that you need him to, well, I think
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: that over, and also the question is, what about, is
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: it going to be a guard or tackle? That one's
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: harder for me to predict. You have a guy you
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: brought in from the National Championship Montana State team at
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: the 1AA level, Cedric Jefferson, who is factoring into the
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: right tackle discussion. We all think Zaraway Williams, who's this
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: gigantic monster 6'8 left tackle is going to be the
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: one of the mainstays right uh so maybe him at
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: left tackle there's a guy named ike garcia who's a
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: local kid who's a highly rated recruit who hasn't been
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: able to stay healthy he is now in his third
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: year in the program and apparently it was a big
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: battle with him and the jefferson guy at right tackle
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: and you know i there's nothing wrong with if you're
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: going to use the true freshman letting him be a
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: guard for the first year and then bumping him out
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: to tackle as need, right?
- 1:05:07Speaker 3: Or no?
- 1:05:08Speaker 6: You don't really go out. Once you move inside, that's
- 1:05:13Speaker 6: the end of it.
- 1:05:14Speaker 5: Really?
- 1:05:15Speaker 6: Yeah, you don't see many guys going back out to tackle.
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: Like Zane Beatles.
- 1:05:20Speaker 6: Injury can dictate that. Sometimes guys have to go inside
- 1:05:23Speaker 6: because of injury, but a lot of times you don't
- 1:05:25Speaker 6: start a guard and move back out to tackle. That's
- 1:05:27Speaker 6: something that doesn't happen very often.
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: I feel like Utah football has done that with a
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: couple of guys, though. Maybe that's why my view on
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: this is skewed.
- 1:05:35Speaker 6: Um, maybe Utah has done it. I just know from
- 1:05:39Speaker 6: other experiences from definitely the NFL, you rarely go inside
- 1:05:44Speaker 6: and go back out in your career. I mean, I've obviously,
- 1:05:46Speaker 6: I did not do that. I stayed inside once I
- 1:05:48Speaker 6: moved inside. Um, you can now, if the idea is
- 1:05:52Speaker 6: we get, we don't get our best five. He's one
- 1:05:55Speaker 6: of our best five. He's not, he's our third best tackle.
- 1:05:57Speaker 6: We want him to play. Oh, okay. But here's the
- 1:06:00Speaker 6: thing about though, if he plays well at guard, it's,
- 1:06:03Speaker 6: you're probably going to feel like you should just keep
- 1:06:05Speaker 6: him there. Why move a player who's really good at
- 1:06:08Speaker 6: a position? We could find some more tackles. That's what
- 1:06:11Speaker 6: it comes down to. If he plays well enough as
- 1:06:12Speaker 6: a guard, you're probably like, well, let's just keep him
- 1:06:15Speaker 6: a guard.
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: But aren't you supposed to put your best athletes on
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: the offensive line to tackle?
- 1:06:20Speaker 6: I mean, I... Probably. That's why I think you just
- 1:06:24Speaker 6: keep him at tackle. Don't even bother putting him at guard.
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: Okay. Well, I think that would affect the number of
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: over-under on.
- 1:06:30Speaker 6: How many games he actually starts. I just would be
- 1:06:32Speaker 6: surprised if he played guard for a season and went
- 1:06:35Speaker 6: back out to tackle. That's something that's not very common.
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: Interesting.
- 1:06:38Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: Well, we'll see how it plays out for Kelvin Obot.
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: People are probably so sick of hearing me talk about him,
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: but I'm excited about it.
- 1:06:45Speaker 6: It's important for the program to have guys succeed like
- 1:06:48Speaker 6: that because it really opens up the door to other
- 1:06:51Speaker 6: guys who that want to come into the program in
- 1:06:55Speaker 6: similar type players. If you can get players like him
- 1:06:58Speaker 6: to play well early on, then you can really sell
- 1:07:01Speaker 6: that to other five-star recruits. It's an important piece if
- 1:07:05Speaker 6: he's able to do it this year.
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: The Big Ten is going to put a rule in
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: place that you cannot boomerang. You can't go into the
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: pros in any way and then come back. The SEC
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: is talking about it. The Big 12 is talking about it.
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: The ACC is talking about it. Really, this is It's
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: going to affect the SEC more than anyone because those
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: are the schools that are like, academics, don't worry about it.
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: We want you, right? Your thoughts on guys that were
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: undrafted free agents or maybe late-round picks who get the
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: message pretty early, you're not going to stick in the
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: NFL this year, wanting to come back for that extra
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: year of eligibility.
- 1:07:46Speaker 6: So these schools are very clearly– using whatever power they
- 1:07:52Speaker 6: have left to have some sort of semblance of uniformity, right?
- 1:07:56Speaker 6: Because there's no power left anymore for these universities and
- 1:08:00Speaker 6: these programs. There's no power left. They've been stripped of
- 1:08:03Speaker 6: all their power. So they have a little bit of
- 1:08:04Speaker 6: power here, right? They're trying to use it, which I
- 1:08:06Speaker 6: agree with in this instance. Look, Sean, life is not fair,
- 1:08:11Speaker 6: as we know, right? And these 2022 players, right, they
- 1:08:16Speaker 6: kind of got screwed. The class... After them, the 2023
- 1:08:21Speaker 6: class gets an extra year. The couple classes before them
- 1:08:24Speaker 6: got extra COVID year. They started to benefit from any
- 1:08:27Speaker 6: of this. And I just sort of say, like, I'm sorry.
- 1:08:31Speaker 6: I don't know why we change everything because of it. Now,
- 1:08:35Speaker 6: where does it stop, right? Sean, let's say that they
- 1:08:38Speaker 6: are granted relief and they're allowed to play this season,
- 1:08:42Speaker 6: which might happen. Judge Muncher, the Big Ten and SEC
- 1:08:44Speaker 6: can't have these rules in place. Then what? Why couldn't
- 1:08:47Speaker 6: a 2019 kid say, well, I didn't get a COVID
- 1:08:49Speaker 6: year and I didn't get a fifth year. Well, I
- 1:08:51Speaker 6: feel the screen ran against. So I didn't get a
- 1:08:54Speaker 6: fifth year. I put 80 snaps as a true freshman.
- 1:08:56Speaker 6: They changed the rules after I left. Do I get
- 1:08:58Speaker 6: to claim some relief? from a judge if I want
- 1:09:00Speaker 6: to go back and play? If I get a speeding
- 1:09:03Speaker 6: ticket and then six months later, they changed the speed,
- 1:09:07Speaker 6: the legal speed. Do I get to go back and
- 1:09:09Speaker 6: tell the judge, hey, man, you changed the speed. I
- 1:09:11Speaker 6: didn't break the law. There's obviously no one's breaking a
- 1:09:13Speaker 6: law here. But at some point, don't we just have
- 1:09:15Speaker 6: to say, like, you kind of got screwed. I'm sorry.
- 1:09:18Speaker 6: The rules are the rules. You didn't know at the time,
- 1:09:21Speaker 6: but you went to the NFL. You've made a roster.
- 1:09:25Speaker 6: You haven't made a roster. You've signed an agent. You've
- 1:09:26Speaker 6: been part of the NFL. You're just not going to
- 1:09:28Speaker 6: play college football anymore. At some point, we have to
- 1:09:31Speaker 6: just put our foot down on some of this stuff.
- 1:09:34Speaker 6: And I think in the end, a judge will overrule
- 1:09:36Speaker 6: this anyway. So all we're talking about now doesn't even matter.
- 1:09:39Speaker 6: At some point, you have to put your foot down, Sean,
- 1:09:42Speaker 6: and say, this is it. Enough is enough.
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: I don't disagree with you at all. What I'm curious
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: about is why it is judges... Because the NCAA puts
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: their foot down, or the conferences are going to put
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: their foot down, or whoever's going to... The powers that
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: be try to put their foot down, and then there's
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: some district court judge in Louisiana who's just like, you've
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: got to pick that foot back up. We're not doing that.
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: I don't know... I don't know why, because you brought
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: up a really great example. There's plenty of laws that
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: have changed over the course of history, and it's not
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: like everyone who broke that law just gets let out
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: of jail.
- 1:10:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: You know?
- 1:10:23Speaker 6: The judge thing is interesting, right? You know, it's just
- 1:10:30Speaker 6: that we have Federal laws, state laws, every state has
- 1:10:34Speaker 6: their own law. And you can understand, look, by the way,
- 1:10:39Speaker 6: these are not really like judgments. For example, like what's
- 1:10:45Speaker 6: happening is someone is suing, right? And while they're suing,
- 1:10:49Speaker 6: the judge goes, okay, I'll grant you relief. You can
- 1:10:53Speaker 6: now play, all right? Then the NCAA goes to a
- 1:10:57Speaker 6: different court, and they say, you know what? We're going
- 1:10:58Speaker 6: to pause that ruling right now until we have an actual, like,
- 1:11:02Speaker 6: it's not, no one's actually winning anything. They're just judges
- 1:11:07Speaker 6: changing their mind to give themselves time to give our
- 1:11:10Speaker 6: actual ruling. So like that, and then you have obviously
- 1:11:13Speaker 6: different states and the federal, it's just, it's all over
- 1:11:16Speaker 6: the place. And it's a, it's a problem, you know,
- 1:11:19Speaker 6: created by NCAA. We were on the air for years
- 1:11:22Speaker 6: talking about these type of topics, right? NCAA just did
- 1:11:24Speaker 6: not foresee any of this happening. And it's going to,
- 1:11:29Speaker 6: Costs on their sports are the wrong word to use,
- 1:11:31Speaker 6: but it's just going to... Everything's just going to be...
- 1:11:34Speaker 6: It's just different now, man. The whole sport is different.
- 1:11:37Speaker 6: It's not going back the other way either.
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: The basketball involvement in this is funny, and I know
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: that we're rounding into football season, but we've been flirting
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: with the... There's been pro-European guys that have played in
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: college basketball for years. The line is muddy with that,
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: and it's now... that college football is being affected, now
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: is when these conferences feel like they need to address it.
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: It just shows you how powerful college football is when
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: it comes to the landscape.
- 1:12:11Speaker 6: It does. College basketball, it's interesting, right? Because it feels
- 1:12:16Speaker 6: like they have more of this happening in college basketball,
- 1:12:20Speaker 6: and it just hasn't been the same. I mean, college basketball,
- 1:12:22Speaker 6: they've got dudes that play like G League games going back,
- 1:12:26Speaker 6: which is like, insane. I mean, you know, these, these
- 1:12:29Speaker 6: NFL players haven't played NFL games yet. I guess they
- 1:12:31Speaker 6: played in preseason games. There's no minor league NFL. Um,
- 1:12:34Speaker 6: but yeah, college basketball just doesn't have the same attention
- 1:12:37Speaker 6: that the football players do. I think it's, I think
- 1:12:39Speaker 6: also like if this happened in, in May, you'd feel differently,
- 1:12:45Speaker 6: but it's happening while players are leaving NFL camps now
- 1:12:49Speaker 6: and going back to college. Like they're literally in, like,
- 1:12:52Speaker 6: I think I'd feel differently. This happened right after the draft.
- 1:12:55Speaker 6: I'm like, okay. All right. Like I, Sure. I, okay.
- 1:12:58Speaker 6: I get it. But I mean, the draft was months ago.
- 1:13:01Speaker 6: Now that was the end of April. Like life has
- 1:13:03Speaker 6: moved on, man.
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: Would you rather block for Deshaun Watson or Shador Sanders
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: in Cleveland?
- 1:13:12Speaker 6: Ask for trade. Um, I would talk just to football
- 1:13:18Speaker 6: or we're talking everything.
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: Well, obviously everything factors in here.
- 1:13:21Speaker 6: Like, I mean, I would not want to play with
- 1:13:23Speaker 6: Deshaun Watson. Um, But I think as a quarterback, he
- 1:13:29Speaker 6: throws the ball quicker and on time. That's the thing
- 1:13:32Speaker 6: I worry about most, right? Like if my quarterback doesn't
- 1:13:34Speaker 6: throw the ball on time or not. And Sanders just
- 1:13:37Speaker 6: doesn't throw the ball on time enough. But I also
- 1:13:40Speaker 6: don't want to play with a quarterback who's going to
- 1:13:42Speaker 6: get booed by our fans every time he steps on
- 1:13:43Speaker 6: the field. So, I mean, I would probably lean towards
- 1:13:47Speaker 6: Sanders in this instance over Watson because Watson's a scumbag
- 1:13:52Speaker 6: and he's not very good and he gets booed endlessly.
- 1:13:56Speaker 6: the entire season. And Sanders, at least, seems like a
- 1:13:59Speaker 6: good kid. He might hold the ball a little bit
- 1:14:03Speaker 6: too long and make my life a little more difficult,
- 1:14:05Speaker 6: but he'll make some good plays on the run. Sanders
- 1:14:08Speaker 6: is what he is, man. It's so interesting about Sanders.
- 1:14:11Speaker 6: He's a football player, right? And I talk about this
- 1:14:15Speaker 6: a lot. I like using and thinking about sort of
- 1:14:20Speaker 6: like historical trends, right? And it's important. So right now
- 1:14:24Speaker 6: there's only two starting quarterbacks in national football, like franchise guys,
- 1:14:28Speaker 6: all right? So I can say that, guys, second contract, right, Sean?
- 1:14:31Speaker 6: Or a rookie, excuse me, a young player in a
- 1:14:33Speaker 6: rookie deal, right? Like Drake May, right? Franchise guy, rookie contract.
- 1:14:36Speaker 6: There's only two in the NFL that are not drafted
- 1:14:40Speaker 6: in the top 53 picks, right? 53rd is Jalen Hurts.
- 1:14:44Speaker 6: It's Dak Prescott and Brock Purdy, all right? And both
- 1:14:48Speaker 6: those guys were good. almost immediately as rookies. Dak played
- 1:14:52Speaker 6: from year one, game one, and I think Purdy ended
- 1:14:55Speaker 6: up playing like week 12. And they were good immediately.
- 1:14:58Speaker 6: And Sanders is a fifth-round pick, man. Like, he's not
- 1:15:02Speaker 6: that good. I think people have missed the plot on this, man.
- 1:15:05Speaker 6: They're so into the... Politics is the wrong word. I
- 1:15:09Speaker 6: don't know what you want to call it in this
- 1:15:10Speaker 6: situation where the Sanders defenders are just like... They're very supportive.
- 1:15:17Speaker 6: They're very passionate about Sanders. And he's a fifth-round pick, man.
- 1:15:21Speaker 6: And now this is now two coaching staffs who said,
- 1:15:22Speaker 6: we don't want you to be our starter from, from
- 1:15:24Speaker 6: week one.
- 1:15:26Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: It's, uh, his, his place in the culture is very
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: odd given his place on the field. If that is
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: the right way to put it.
- 1:15:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:15:35Speaker 6: And you know, like, you know, in the Tebow was
- 1:15:38Speaker 6: a first round pick who played a lot of football games. Well,
- 1:15:41Speaker 6: you loved, I love Tebow.
- 1:15:43Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:15:43Speaker 6: Um, you know, a lot of the time we discuss those,
- 1:15:45Speaker 6: it's like first round picks, right? Like we don't argue
- 1:15:48Speaker 6: about fifth round picks very often. Um, And it just
- 1:15:52Speaker 6: seems like, you know, I think sometimes we're just too online.
- 1:15:58Speaker 6: At least I am. Like, I think all the time about, like,
- 1:16:02Speaker 6: how would this topic be, like, in real life? Like,
- 1:16:04Speaker 6: my neighbor, who's, like, a fringe football fan, if he was, like,
- 1:16:06Speaker 6: talking about Sanders, I was like, he's fifth-round pick. He's like, oh, yeah, okay, yeah,
- 1:16:10Speaker 6: he's not playing. That makes sense. Or some of the
- 1:16:11Speaker 6: WNBA stuff, I'd be like, you know, if I bring
- 1:16:14Speaker 6: it up to him, he'd be like, yeah, that's, wait, really?
- 1:16:16Speaker 6: That's what's happening? We're just so online, like, Are people
- 1:16:19Speaker 6: in real life really arguing about Sanders' viability as a
- 1:16:22Speaker 6: long-term starter as a fifth-round pick? This is such an
- 1:16:25Speaker 6: online discussion.
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: It is very much. Is there a week zero game
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: that you're actually looking forward to?
- 1:16:34Speaker 6: I took USC over 48.5 points against San Jose State.
- 1:16:38Speaker 6: I was doing some research on this.
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: I do love how when I ask a question about
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: a game you're actually looking forward to, you just go
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: to what you are willing to bet on.
- 1:16:47Speaker 6: Well, because that's how I'm going to watch football this weekend. Yeah.
- 1:16:52Speaker 6: You know, I was looking this up today. So USC loves, dude,
- 1:16:58Speaker 6: to run it up on these teams. So the last
- 1:17:01Speaker 6: three times they played like a San Jose State, it
- 1:17:03Speaker 6: was Utah. I have it right here. I was doing
- 1:17:05Speaker 6: this before it got on the air. It was Utah
- 1:17:07Speaker 6: State in 2024, Missouri State last year, and Georgia Southern
- 1:17:11Speaker 6: last year as well. They went well over 40.5 points.
- 1:17:14Speaker 6: But they scored 14 points, 17 points, and 14 points
- 1:17:18Speaker 6: in the fourth quarters of those three games. That's a
- 1:17:21Speaker 6: lot of points. For reference, by the way, for reference,
- 1:17:24Speaker 6: Oregon last year played Montana State in Week 1, Oklahoma
- 1:17:27Speaker 6: State in Week 2. They scored seven total fourth-quarter points
- 1:17:30Speaker 6: in those two games. Like, USC, they just run it up, bro.
- 1:17:35Speaker 6: They love to do it. And there's nothing wrong with it. But,
- 1:17:37Speaker 6: you know, they're going to score a ton of points
- 1:17:39Speaker 6: this weekend. I want to watch that game. Obviously... Some
- 1:17:41Speaker 6: interest in the Dublin game. The loser of that game,
- 1:17:43Speaker 6: their season just goes down the drain fast. Go look
- 1:17:46Speaker 6: at the results the last couple of years. I'm curious
- 1:17:49Speaker 6: about Stanford with Tavita Pritchard in week one, just to
- 1:17:53Speaker 6: sort of see where they're at. I talked to him
- 1:17:55Speaker 6: AC Media Day. I like talking with him. So it's
- 1:17:57Speaker 6: a lot to get. Dude, there's Thursday night. There's a
- 1:18:00Speaker 6: FCS Thursday night.
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: You're going to be watching that?
- 1:18:04Speaker 6: I don't know. If I have a bet on it,
- 1:18:07Speaker 6: maybe I will. I know you'll be locked into some
- 1:18:09Speaker 6: Weber State playing Thursday night.
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: Are they?
- 1:18:12Speaker 6: Who's the Weber State opener? Do you have your pocket
- 1:18:14Speaker 6: schedule handy?
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: I don't have it in front of me.
- 1:18:17Speaker 6: Do you remember when we used to get like pocket schedules? Yes.
- 1:18:20Speaker 6: I think my dad would keep like the usual one
- 1:18:23Speaker 6: in his wallet.
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: That's so fantastic. The pocket schedule not as good as
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: the magnet schedule, the fridge magnet schedule.
- 1:18:30Speaker 6: Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:18:32Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:18:32Speaker 6: We had both of those. Before I get out of here,
- 1:18:36Speaker 6: everyone go to my Twitter at Jeff Schwartz. Can we
- 1:18:38Speaker 6: talk a second about my son's video? that I posted
- 1:18:42Speaker 6: on there. Oh my gosh.
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: It's so good.
- 1:18:45Speaker 6: My son is 12.
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: He's awesome.
- 1:18:47Speaker 6: He's turned 12 he's the best kid of all time
- 1:18:49Speaker 6: and uh he was going to his first bat mitzvah
- 1:18:53Speaker 6: party this weekend like the first party he has to
- 1:18:55Speaker 6: wear like a jacket too so i told him you
- 1:18:57Speaker 6: know in temple in the morning for temple you have
- 1:18:59Speaker 6: to wear a collared shirt right like a white color
- 1:19:02Speaker 6: shirt he wore a blue blazer and some slacks and
- 1:19:05Speaker 6: for the party i was like look bro You got
- 1:19:06Speaker 6: to wear your jacket there to the country club. You
- 1:19:08Speaker 6: can wear a polo underneath. You can wear a polo underneath.
- 1:19:10Speaker 6: You can take it off. You're 12. Who cares? So
- 1:19:14Speaker 6: he goes to the party. My wife texted me a
- 1:19:17Speaker 6: video on Sunday morning from a security camera that we
- 1:19:20Speaker 6: have under a mirror in our house. And my son
- 1:19:23Speaker 6: was doing shadow boxing and kickboxing with the jacket on.
- 1:19:27Speaker 6: And I asked him afterwards, yeah, I was just testing
- 1:19:29Speaker 6: to see if I could move in it.
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: Dude, it's the right thing to do.
- 1:19:35Speaker 6: He threw about three punches. He did like an elbow punch.
- 1:19:39Speaker 6: What's that call when you throw your elbow like that?
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: It's called an elbow.
- 1:19:42Speaker 6: A what?
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: It's called an elbow.
- 1:19:44Speaker 6: Okay. He threw an elbow. He did like a kick.
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: He did a kick. Then he did a jump kick.
- 1:19:49Speaker 6: He's like, I'm ready to go, Dad.
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: Dude, it's so sick. And it's awesome because we've all
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: done that. Every one of us goes in front of
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: a mirror and you make a different face. It's not
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: your real face. You're trying to look better in the mirror.
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: You suck your gut in, right? But when you're younger,
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: maybe you throw a couple of punches. Maybe you're making
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: sure you got your mobility. You never know what's going
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: to happen at a bat mitzvah.
- 1:20:12Speaker 6: I just love it.
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: So good.
- 1:20:14Speaker 6: He's never been in a fight ever. There's never been
- 1:20:17Speaker 6: a fight. He's not close to a fight. There's no
- 1:20:19Speaker 6: need for any of those skills ever.
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: If someone tries to cut in with your dance with
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: your lady at the bat mitzvah, come on.
- 1:20:27Speaker 6: It's the best.
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: Go look at the video on Jeff's Twitter. It really
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: is great.
- 1:20:32Speaker 6: If you turn up the volume, you can hear the
- 1:20:34Speaker 6: noises he's making with his mouth. He's making noises with
- 1:20:37Speaker 6: his mouth. So awesome. That was legitimately... 10 minutes before
- 1:20:44Speaker 6: he went to the party.
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: Does he know that you've put this out for the
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: whole world to see?
- 1:20:47Speaker 6: Yeah, he knows.
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: He doesn't care. Was he mad?
- 1:20:49Speaker 6: No, he laughed so hard.
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: He is really the best. That's awesome.
- 1:20:54Speaker 6: He's an awesome kid. I love that kid. I love
- 1:20:56Speaker 6: my daughter too, but they're just different kids. It's so good.
- 1:21:01Speaker 6: I love that. I feel like that's some of your
- 1:21:02Speaker 6: influence on us.
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: Yes, I hope so. All right, we've got to try
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: to stay on clock, so I'm going to cut you loose,
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: but you're the man. Thanks for joining us.
- 1:21:11Speaker 6: All right, bye-bye.
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: That's Jeff Schwartz, former NFL player, Oregon Duck betting expert,
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: not going back to get more eligibility and trying to play.
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: Jeff Schwartz is actually the kind of person who, if
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: he lived here in Utah, I would be sending him
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: to Southern Steer Butcher in Saratoga Springs, and he would
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: make the trip. Even if he was up here in
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: Salt Lake where I'm at, 1705 North Redwood Road down
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: in Saratoga Springs. And he would walk in and he
- 1:21:39Speaker 2: would talk to Dan and Aubrey and he would say, look,
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: I need this exact cut. I need a bone in ribeye.
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: I don't want it to be an inch thick. I
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: need it one and three quarters thick. He would have very,
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: very particular interests on the cut of meat because he's
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: a bit of a gourmand. Jeff is the kind of
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: guy who knows exactly what he wants from his butcher.
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: They can accommodate that at Southern steer. They'll cut that
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: thing for you while you wait. All right. You want
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: the big Tomahawk steak. That's been dry aged. They have
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: the dry aging locker right there. You can go in,
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: you can point at it. I want that one. If
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: you're not necessarily that discerning with the palate or that
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: discerning with your meat, maybe you're not somebody who knows
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: exactly what the best fit is or what kind of
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: ribs you you should be feeding your guests for the
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: college football barbecue. Let Dan and Aubrey walk you through
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: it or better yet, let them give you one of
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: the pre-made meals or three of the pre-made meals. You
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: can get three pre-made meals, sides, main meat, everything for
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: less than $ 60, 59 bucks, everything you need for three
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: complete meals. You need the seasonings, the salts, the rubs,
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: the jams, the sides, the chips. They have it all
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: down there at Southern Steer. And they're going to give
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: you a smile. They're going to give you some advice.
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: They're going to treat you like the neighborhood butcher used
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: to treat your grandma and your grandpa. It's that concept,
- 1:22:59Speaker 2: but with a modern twist at Southern Steer Butcher. Tell
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: them OC sent you. Join the Southern Steer Rewards Club
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: for the daily and weekly savings and take advantage. of clean,
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: fresh meat, hormone-free, antibiotic-free. It's the kind of stuff you
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: should be feeding your family now, and you can do
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: it without breaking the bank at Southern Steer. 1705 North
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: Redwood Road in Saratoga Springs. All right, red and blue next.
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: Jerem Jordan's going to swing by, and we'll talk the
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: latest out of BYU. Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: and 92.1 FM.
- 1:23:37Speaker 6: My father taught me many things.
- 1:23:39Speaker 7: You know what they say.
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: He taught me, keep your friends close, but your enemies close.
- 1:23:45Speaker 4: Time to check in on the team down south.
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: They have done absolutely nothing wrong, but they're blue.
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: This is the Red and Blue on the.
- 1:23:53Speaker 4: Sean O'Connell Show and Utah's number one sports talk, ESPN
- 1:23:57Speaker 4: 700 at 92.1 FM.

- 1:24:08Speaker 2: by Murdoch Ford Santa Quinn. We check in on the

- 1:24:47Speaker 2: Anything you need. And if they don't have exactly what
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: you're looking for in the right color, the right trim package,
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: they will find it for you. Tell them OC sent you.
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: Or tell them Jerem Jordan sent you.
- 1:24:57Speaker 6: Hi, Jerem. Welcome to the show.
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: How are you?
- 1:25:00Speaker 5: Tell them I sent you and get another 500. No,
- 1:25:03Speaker 5: I'm just kidding. That's not part of the problem. But
- 1:25:05Speaker 5: you can try.
- 1:25:06Speaker 2: You can try. Just say, hey, Jerem told me. They
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: might honor it.
- 1:25:09Speaker 5: You never know. We don't know who this Jerem is,
- 1:25:12Speaker 5: but yeah.
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: Okay, Jerem, we've been talking a little offensive line at
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: the University of Utah because it's one of the big
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: questions with this year's roster. And I like to do
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: these over-unders where we predict final stats for the season.
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: before we get any game play. This one I feel
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: like is important for Utah. It's going to be important
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: for BYU as well, because similar to Utah, they got
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: a mobile quarterback. They've actually got a lot more returning
- 1:25:36Speaker 2: experience on their offensive line. And of course, if you
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: could protect your QB, he can throw the ball downfield
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: to the wide receivers. And then your offense starts humming.
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: I set the over under for Utah football at 19
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: and a half sacks total on the season. That Um,
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: where would you put BYU? Where, where's a reasonable number
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: for BYU's offense and the fans to expect? If we
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: give up this many, that's probably the max less than
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: that will be okay. More than that. We're starting to
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: question things.
- 1:26:11Speaker 5: Probably sub 20. So last year was 16, which is
- 1:26:14Speaker 5: a pretty low number. BYU did a nice job protecting
- 1:26:17Speaker 5: bear and bears, very versatile and mobile where he can
- 1:26:20Speaker 5: get out of stuff and at least scramble forward. He's
- 1:26:23Speaker 5: good about keeping his eyes downfield. He doesn't just fail early.
- 1:26:27Speaker 5: BYU really emphasized the pass game in fall camp because
- 1:26:30Speaker 5: they were pretty comfortable with kind of where the run
- 1:26:31Speaker 5: game is, although I talked to the offensive coordinator, Aaron Roderick, today,
- 1:26:35Speaker 5: and he said, today we ran a lot just to
- 1:26:37Speaker 5: make sure they felt comfortable at kind of the very
- 1:26:39Speaker 5: end of fall camp here. So I'll go sub-20. I
- 1:26:42Speaker 5: just think BYU is going to be on a lot
- 1:26:43Speaker 5: of short third-down distances because of the tremendous run game
- 1:26:48Speaker 5: and good tight ends. So, yeah, give me sub-20, man.
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, so similar number. If we set it
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: for BYU at 19.5, I think most people are going
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: to take the under and think that they won't hit 20.
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: That's kind of where a lot of Utah fans are
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: netting out, right at that number. And obviously, if you're BYU,
- 1:27:05Speaker 2: given the returning talent on the offensive line, there are
- 1:27:09Speaker 2: just fewer questions there, right?
- 1:27:12Speaker 5: Yeah, you're not replacing two first-rounders. Like, that's an incredible feat, right,
- 1:27:16Speaker 5: last year from Utah. Three starters are back, and the
- 1:27:18Speaker 5: two guys that you kind of plug in played a
- 1:27:21Speaker 5: lot anyway, Sonny Macassini and Kyle Svarchok. So, yeah, you
- 1:27:24Speaker 5: got Bruce Mitchell, one of the best centers in America.
- 1:27:27Speaker 5: Andrew Gentry could be a day-three tackle taken. And then
- 1:27:31Speaker 5: Paki Fina comes over from Washington. He played a lot
- 1:27:33Speaker 5: of guards. His left tackle's new, but he's played a lot.
- 1:27:36Speaker 5: And so, yeah, it's a group the BYU Saints can
- 1:27:39Speaker 5: block for. LJ Martin to get a bunch of yards again.
- 1:27:41Speaker 2: All right. So we're very excited to have real football
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: to talk about this weekend. Next week, when you join
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: me for some red and blue, we're going to get
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: to react to like at least one big 12 opponent
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: TCU and what they looked like. That's going to be wonderful.
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: But right now. these weird storylines are still dominating college sports.
- 1:28:02Speaker 2: And today's battle is being fought again, legally over eligibility
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: being granted to former NFL players or guys that were
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: on a roster or got cut from a roster, whatever,
- 1:28:15Speaker 2: returning to college football, your thoughts on how that fits,
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: especially through the BYU lens who they're okay with it
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: on the basketball front. What about football?
- 1:28:27Speaker 5: Yeah, it's interesting. I kind of wish I would have
- 1:28:30Speaker 5: at least taken a law class or two just so
- 1:28:33Speaker 5: I could speak a little better on all this all
- 1:28:35Speaker 5: this legalese with sports. It's wild.
- 1:28:37Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:28:38Speaker 5: So I'm looking at it a couple of different ways.
- 1:28:41Speaker 5: One is, is a preseason game where you're like actually
- 1:28:46Speaker 5: in camp best play the season that grossly different from, say,
- 1:28:50Speaker 5: a summer league game, which is more like OTAs. Like,
- 1:28:53Speaker 5: the timing is interesting, right? Because the season's about to start.
- 1:28:57Speaker 5: That feels like it's too late. It feels like it's
- 1:28:59Speaker 5: too late to suddenly add a dude from the NFL.
- 1:29:03Speaker 5: In the case of a certain Michigan State commitment for
- 1:29:05Speaker 5: BYU men's basketball, obviously I want this dude to play
- 1:29:08Speaker 5: for BYU. He's awesome. He's going to help this team
- 1:29:11Speaker 5: a lot. He's going to be a stud. Selfishly, I
- 1:29:14Speaker 5: don't want it to have anything to do with the
- 1:29:16Speaker 5: NBA guys. And it's mainly just these fifth-year guys from
- 1:29:19Speaker 5: 22 that we're talking about. This isn't going to be
- 1:29:21Speaker 5: a consistent issue, I wouldn't imagine, although I wouldn't put
- 1:29:24Speaker 5: it past anybody to just try and get some injunction
- 1:29:27Speaker 5: in whatever state to selfishly be able to play in
- 1:29:30Speaker 5: the future. But it feels like this is kind of
- 1:29:32Speaker 5: limited to this year. Maybe not. The NFL one feels
- 1:29:36Speaker 5: like it's just too late. The NBA, no one's playing
- 1:29:39Speaker 5: preseason in the NBA. We've got a few months. Fifth-year
- 1:29:42Speaker 5: guys out of college, maybe that's just because I want
- 1:29:44Speaker 5: a certain Michigan State guy to play, but I guess
- 1:29:46Speaker 5: I feel differently about the NFL guys versus the NBA guys.
- 1:29:49Speaker 5: That doesn't pertain to BYU. They did not pick up
- 1:29:51Speaker 5: a single kind of new fifth-year guy late add. Not
- 1:29:54Speaker 5: a single one was added. They kind of had their
- 1:29:57Speaker 5: team locked and loaded, and we're good to go.
- 1:30:03Speaker 2: As it pertains to the basketball front, and you're referring
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: to Jackson Kohler, who, of course, is the– The guy
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: we saw in a jazz uniform, but also is going
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: to be in a BYU uniform, at least as of today.
- 1:30:16Speaker 2: Looks like he's going to be eligible to be in
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: a BYU uniform for this upcoming season. And we get
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: the announcement late yesterday that Noam Yaakov for Utah is
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: not going to be eligible. And RJ Luis at LSU,
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: who was traded in the NBA, he is eligible right
- 1:30:34Speaker 2: now at LSU.
- 1:30:34Speaker 3: And look, I..
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: It's easy for you're traded.
- 1:30:40Speaker 5: It's over, right? You were in a trade.
- 1:30:43Speaker 2: It feels like if you were involved in a trade,
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: you can't play college sports anymore. You're involved in an
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: NBA trade, but it's almost laughable.
- 1:30:50Speaker 5: Like I'm, I'm literally laughing out loud because of how
- 1:30:52Speaker 5: silly this is.
- 1:30:53Speaker 2: But like, if you're a Baton Rouge district judge, you're
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: just like, no, I want this guy to play. And
- 1:31:00Speaker 2: all of this falls under the umbrella or the attempted
- 1:31:03Speaker 2: umbrella of this protect college sports act that would, would,
- 1:31:07Speaker 2: supersede all these district and local judges being able to
- 1:31:10Speaker 2: make these injunctions or grant these temporary restraining orders. At
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: least we think I'm not any more of a legal
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: expert than you, but on the basketball front, on the
- 1:31:20Speaker 2: football front, on the whatever else front, are we, are
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: we finally reaching a point where it's like, okay, this
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: government intervention truly is needed at this point, or we're
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: going to shake apart the fabric of college sports in
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: a way that alienates too many people.
- 1:31:37Speaker 5: Who's in charge has always been the question, right? Even
- 1:31:40Speaker 5: when the NCAA was running, it was like, are they
- 1:31:42Speaker 5: in charge? Do they have power? There's no front-facing commissioner.
- 1:31:47Speaker 5: You know, the SEC and Big Ten are kind of
- 1:31:49Speaker 5: posturing to be in that. Like, it's very interesting. And
- 1:31:52Speaker 5: the fact that the SEC and Big Ten are talking about, hey,
- 1:31:54Speaker 5: we might make rules against this. And then, you know,
- 1:31:58Speaker 5: conversations and reports out there from Ross Dellinger, you know,
- 1:32:02Speaker 5: sports about like, hey, you know, Big 12 and ACC
- 1:32:05Speaker 5: might do this. The Power Four might do this. So
- 1:32:07Speaker 5: we'll see kind of who steps in until they actually
- 1:32:10Speaker 5: pass that bill, you know, which they might in like
- 1:32:13Speaker 5: a month from now. Then, yeah, who's in charge and
- 1:32:17Speaker 5: what's legal? Like, as long as it is allowed, I
- 1:32:20Speaker 5: understand why people are trying. Like, it's within the rules
- 1:32:24Speaker 5: right now. Is it chaotic? Is it crazy? Is it
- 1:32:27Speaker 5: out of hand? Absolutely. We've got to figure this.
- 1:32:29Speaker 3: Out, man.
- 1:32:31Speaker 2: The aforementioned week zero game happens in Aviva Stadium, Dublin, Ireland.
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: 10 a.m. Mountain Time kickoff, North Carolina, TCU. Obviously the...
- 1:32:42Speaker 2: by extension intrigue for the local fans here is that
- 1:32:45Speaker 2: TCU on the schedule for BYU on the schedule for
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: Utah means that we need to know a little something
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: about this team. And they, to me are one of
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: the squads that could kind of sneak up on the
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: rest of the big 12, not being talked about a
- 1:32:59Speaker 2: ton in the preseason. It's kind of been BYU, Texas tech, Utah, Houston, TCU,
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: a bit more of an afterthought for a lot of people.
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: How closely will you be paying attention to this North
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: Carolina TCU matchup?
- 1:33:14Speaker 5: Listen, I'm the OC for the Mapleton first and second
- 1:33:17Speaker 5: grade tackle football game, and my son's the quarterback. So
- 1:33:20Speaker 5: that's my real focus this Saturday morning, making sure I
- 1:33:23Speaker 5: can get our hopefully line to block. They haven't really
- 1:33:26Speaker 5: blocked yet in the two games we had. So it's
- 1:33:28Speaker 5: going to be a lot of quick games. Sean, a
- 1:33:30Speaker 5: lot of just dump outs, hitches, little outs. You know,
- 1:33:33Speaker 5: we're not going deep that much. After that, when I
- 1:33:36Speaker 5: get home, and I'm coaching a volleyball game as well,
- 1:33:38Speaker 5: Then I will watch Jaden Craig and the Harvard transfer
- 1:33:42Speaker 5: and TCU kind of get after and see what they are.
- 1:33:44Speaker 5: They have a new OC in Gordon Sammis who came
- 1:33:47Speaker 5: over from UConn. They had a nice year. They're going
- 1:33:49Speaker 5: to be more balanced. Like TCU with that always pretty
- 1:33:52Speaker 5: good defense and all the athletes they have. And they've
- 1:33:56Speaker 5: won 18 games last year. It's like they've been sneaky
- 1:33:59Speaker 5: pretty good. Can they get over the hump this year
- 1:34:01Speaker 5: and actually challenge for a conference title? I'm not so sure,
- 1:34:04Speaker 5: but I do think that they will be a challenge,
- 1:34:06Speaker 5: especially– BYU in week four, that's a big game. Like
- 1:34:09Speaker 5: it goes, it goes, you know, two, four, six, eight,
- 1:34:11Speaker 5: nine for BYU in the biggest games. Week two is
- 1:34:15Speaker 5: Arizona at TCU, you know, in early October, the big
- 1:34:18Speaker 5: one week six, Notre Dame, BYU has to be ready
- 1:34:21Speaker 5: for that. And, and Craig's the guy that played a
- 1:34:23Speaker 5: ton at Harvard comes over and he's the guy now
- 1:34:26Speaker 5: taking over for Hoover who got Indiana. So yeah, I'm
- 1:34:29Speaker 5: very intrigued, you know, hoping TCU has a, Tremendous season,
- 1:34:33Speaker 5: and it has a couple losses in late to BYU
- 1:34:36Speaker 5: and Utah. That'd be great, but I do think they
- 1:34:38Speaker 5: could buy for kind of a top six Big 12
- 1:34:41Speaker 5: spot this year.
- 1:34:43Speaker 2: The Senior Bowl watch list. It's watch list season, obviously.
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: Bear Bachmeier, congrats.
- 1:34:48Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 1:34:48Speaker 2: Davey O'Brien, watch list. Bruce Mitchell's on the Remington watch list,
- 1:34:54Speaker 2: if I'm not mistaken.
- 1:34:55Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 1:34:56Speaker 5: Remington sounds the most English, so I love that one.
- 1:34:58Speaker 5: The Remington watch list, yeah.
- 1:35:01Speaker 2: I'm actually very pleased with the committee for the watch,
- 1:35:05Speaker 2: the Remington Award, because this year I think there were
- 1:35:07Speaker 2: 30 guys on the list. When I was doing Pac-12 radio,
- 1:35:11Speaker 2: there were 70 guys on the list one year.
- 1:35:13Speaker 5: Did you see the Joe Moore award watch list yesterday?
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: I did not.
- 1:35:19Speaker 5: So best offensive line. They did every single FBS team,
- 1:35:22Speaker 5: all 138th. We're on it. We're watching every single team.
- 1:35:28Speaker 5: It was so good.
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: I actually love that. a little tongue in cheek. Like
- 1:35:31Speaker 2: this is our watch list. It's literally everyone. That's great.
- 1:35:35Speaker 2: They say, congrats. You made it well done. Uh, the
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: senior bowl watch list though, named, uh, six BYU players
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: as top 300 top in their group of their position group.
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: And it is a lot of the same names. We
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: have been talking about all off season, Isaiah Glasker, Evan Johnson,
- 1:35:52Speaker 2: LJ Martin, Faletau Satawala, Keanu Tanavasa, Kedu Lawave. Uh, anyone
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: going to, force their name into these types of conversations
- 1:36:03Speaker 2: by the end of the year i think.
- 1:36:05Speaker 5: Bruce mitchell we're just talking about i do think he's
- 1:36:08Speaker 5: a top five top ten center in college football i
- 1:36:10Speaker 5: think he could very well be drafted six four kind
- 1:36:13Speaker 5: of a taller center uh 305 great experience a lot
- 1:36:17Speaker 5: of winning uh dude dude was uh pff highly graded
- 1:36:22Speaker 5: he was he was all big 12 last year He's
- 1:36:25Speaker 5: not lost a step. If anything, he'll hopefully be better.
- 1:36:28Speaker 5: So I do think Bruce Mitchell was kind of the
- 1:36:30Speaker 5: one where I was like, hey, I think he should
- 1:36:31Speaker 5: be on there. Everybody else I agreed with.
- 1:36:36Speaker 2: The rest of the slate before BYU actually takes the
- 1:36:41Speaker 2: field next Saturday. And we'll have you on next week
- 1:36:44Speaker 2: so we can talk a little bit more about some
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: of these things. But obviously, you know, BYU is going
- 1:36:48Speaker 2: to dominate attention for you and all the folks involved
- 1:36:51Speaker 2: and the fans of that BYU team. But what games...
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: I see you want to get a sense of Utah,
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: but you're probably not going to be like, oh, whatever
- 1:37:00Speaker 2: they are against Idaho is what they're going to be
- 1:37:02Speaker 2: for the rest of the season. So what games before
- 1:37:04Speaker 2: BYU kicks off have the most of your attention?
- 1:37:09Speaker 5: Yeah, definitely UNC and TCU, like you mentioned. Intrigued by
- 1:37:15Speaker 5: just about everybody in the league. Week zero, week one,
- 1:37:19Speaker 5: I'm stoked. There's a handful of kind of Good games
- 1:37:22Speaker 5: out there. Colorado, Georgia Tech is kind of a sneaky one.
- 1:37:25Speaker 5: Although Colorado, I don't know that they're going to be
- 1:37:27Speaker 5: that good, but I am intrigued. Oregon State playing Houston
- 1:37:31Speaker 5: is interesting. Oregon State is going to be BYU's season
- 1:37:33Speaker 5: opener next year. But Oregon State played Houston and Texas
- 1:37:36Speaker 5: Tech in the first couple weeks. So I'm interested to
- 1:37:39Speaker 5: kind of see Big 12 there. Baylor-Auburn is intriguing in
- 1:37:43Speaker 5: week one to me. I like that one a lot. Yeah,
- 1:37:47Speaker 5: that's kind of it. There's not too many kind of–
- 1:37:49Speaker 5: barn burners there. There's kind of 12 or 13 non-conference
- 1:37:52Speaker 5: games total, like against the power four opponents that intrigued me.
- 1:37:56Speaker 5: And yeah, I think BYU Notre Dame ends up being
- 1:37:59Speaker 5: probably your most visible high-end kind of top one, two
- 1:38:02Speaker 5: top 15 teams preseason. That'll be interesting in week six,
- 1:38:05Speaker 5: but yeah, big 12 has got to show up in
- 1:38:08Speaker 5: these non-conference games. There's probably a certain amount of games
- 1:38:11Speaker 5: that they need to, to have some good wins, you know,
- 1:38:14Speaker 5: Oklahoma state, if they can compete with Oregon. Well, I
- 1:38:15Speaker 5: think that'd say a lot. You know, Utah with Arkansas
- 1:38:19Speaker 5: is going to be interesting, notably. So, yeah, I'm excited. Listen,
- 1:38:23Speaker 5: after covering BYU as an independent, where you're just like
- 1:38:26Speaker 5: on a farm by yourself out in the middle of nowhere,
- 1:38:28Speaker 5: if you will. now like being in like the rich neighborhood,
- 1:38:32Speaker 5: if you will, it's going, oh, yeah, all the neighbors.
- 1:38:34Speaker 5: I hope that everyone's good. We argue about HOA like.
- 1:38:38Speaker 5: Like it's just the swimming pool.
- 1:38:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:38:39Speaker 5: The grass was too tall, whatever. It's fun to just
- 1:38:42Speaker 5: be team big 12 and BYU hasn't had that. And
- 1:38:45Speaker 5: now it's year four. We're getting used to it. And like, it's,
- 1:38:47Speaker 5: it's been cool. Cause the league, the league needs to
- 1:38:49Speaker 5: try and get two teams into the playoffs. One obviously
- 1:38:53Speaker 5: is going to happen, but it'd be nice if two
- 1:38:55Speaker 5: emerged and they have to have great regular seasons. And
- 1:38:58Speaker 5: those non-conference games will play a big, be a big
- 1:39:02Speaker 5: factor at the very end.
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: Last thing before I let you go, when we talk
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: a week from today, will either the NCAA or the
- 1:39:11Speaker 2: conferences or the U.S. government or an executive order or something,
- 1:39:16Speaker 2: will there have been a meaningful stoppage to NFL players
- 1:39:20Speaker 2: returning to college football by this time next week?
- 1:39:23Speaker 5: It's a good question. I wonder if the leagues themselves
- 1:39:27Speaker 5: will kind of govern that. And will the Big 12
- 1:39:29Speaker 5: feel like, hey, we need to do what? those leagues
- 1:39:32Speaker 5: are doing. Cause if you don't, you could get a
- 1:39:34Speaker 5: bunch of those guys in your league. Do you then
- 1:39:37Speaker 5: become kind of the, the, do you get beat up
- 1:39:40Speaker 5: by those leagues in the court of public opinion? You know, legally,
- 1:39:43Speaker 5: what does that look like? So it could be, could
- 1:39:45Speaker 5: be very interesting. It just feels so late in the game.
- 1:39:48Speaker 5: Like BYU literally tomorrow is prepping for Utah tech in
- 1:39:52Speaker 5: game one. Like you can't just add somebody suddenly and
- 1:39:55Speaker 5: feel like, yeah, we did everyone a solid here that
- 1:39:58Speaker 5: has been here. in the weight room all year. We
- 1:40:00Speaker 5: don't know what you've been up to, but we added,
- 1:40:02Speaker 5: I don't know. It's just very chaotic.
- 1:40:05Speaker 2: That's Jerem Jordan in a conversation. Red and blue is
- 1:40:08Speaker 2: brought to you by Murdoch Ford, Santa Quinn right now,
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: a thousand dollars off your down payment, $ 500 of extra
- 1:40:15Speaker 2: final summer days, bonus cash and 0% APR for 36
- 1:40:20Speaker 2: months at Murdoch Ford down in Santa Quinn. Jerem, good
- 1:40:23Speaker 2: luck to your little league team this weekend.
- 1:40:26Speaker 5: Thank you. I just hope we get in the end
- 1:40:28Speaker 5: zone like three times. That's kind of the goal here.
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: Oh, just three.
- 1:40:31Speaker 3: Wow.
- 1:40:32Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:40:32Speaker 5: Super high standard here.
- 1:40:34Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:40:35Speaker 2: Thanks, bud.
- 1:40:37Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 1:40:37Speaker 4: See you, John.
- 1:40:38Speaker 2: Jerem Jordan, great stuff as always. Utah has named their
- 1:40:43Speaker 2: football captains for the 2026 season. I'll tell you who
- 1:40:46Speaker 2: they are next on the Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 700
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: and 92.1 FM. Feeling out of the loop?
- 1:40:57Speaker 4: Let's catch up on today's biggest headlines in the Daily
- 1:41:00Speaker 4: News Dump, where we flush out the biggest stories of
- 1:41:03Speaker 4: the day on the Sean O'Connell Show and Utah's number
- 1:41:06Speaker 4: one sports talk, ESPN 792.1 FM. Brought to you by
- 1:41:11Speaker 4: Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling. Just look for the truck
- 1:41:14Speaker 4: with the duck.
- 1:41:15Speaker 3: Baby, when I met you, there was peace unknown.
- 1:41:23Speaker 6: I set out to.
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: Get you with a fine-tooth comb.
- 1:41:27Speaker 2: I was soft inside. There was something going on. You
- 1:41:37Speaker 2: do something to me that I can't explain. Hold me
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: closer and I feel no pain. Everything in my heart.
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: We got something going on. Tender love is blind.
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: It requires a dedication.
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: We're playing this for you on the Sean O'Connell Show
- 1:42:05Speaker 2: because one of the iconic stars of country music, really
- 1:42:10Speaker 2: transcendent beyond that into television and movies and other genres
- 1:42:15Speaker 2: of music and just pop culture in general, Dolly Parton.
- 1:42:23Speaker 2: No longer with us. Rest in peace, Dolly. 80 years old.
- 1:42:28Speaker 2: Just four days ago, she did an interview where she
- 1:42:30Speaker 2: talked about how she's had some tough times with her
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: health as of late. And Dolly Parton has gone to
- 1:42:37Speaker 2: the other side. So a 60-year career in entertainment is
- 1:42:44Speaker 2: really something. That's about how long she's been in the
- 1:42:47Speaker 2: public eye. Rest in peace, Dolly. James, you texted this
- 1:42:54Speaker 2: to your wife and ruined her day? Yeah, I said, hey,
- 1:42:57Speaker 2: you hear about Dolly? And she goes, well, thanks for
- 1:42:59Speaker 2: ruining my day. I said, I put a sad face emoji.
- 1:43:03Speaker 2: I don't know. It's not like I was being heartless
- 1:43:07Speaker 2: about it. You don't know what else you're supposed to
- 1:43:08Speaker 2: do besides the sad face emoji?
- 1:43:12Speaker 3: Yeah, she was actually focusing on work, which was, you know,
- 1:43:17Speaker 3: that's weird. She hadn't heard it yet. I figured she'd
- 1:43:21Speaker 3: heard it because she's you know, tuned into the pop culture.
- 1:43:25Speaker 3: It has been a lot more than I am. And
- 1:43:27Speaker 3: it's been a Dolly, a bigger Dolly Parton fan than me,
- 1:43:30Speaker 3: but apparently I'm the one who broke the news. And now,
- 1:43:33Speaker 3: now I get to get blamed for having a bad day.
- 1:43:35Speaker 3: So whatever, I guess I'll wear that.
- 1:43:39Speaker 2: I'm going to say that I don't want to reduce
- 1:43:41Speaker 2: Dolly Parton to her looks because she was obviously incredibly talented.
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: And you know, Incredible musicality and a great legacy there.
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: But has there ever been a more beautiful 80-year-old than
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: Dolly Parton? Has there ever been a more attractive 80-year-old
- 1:43:58Speaker 2: on the planet than Dolly Parton? Because, I mean, I
- 1:44:01Speaker 2: didn't see her yesterday, but it's not like she's been
- 1:44:05Speaker 2: out of the public eye for very long.
- 1:44:07Speaker 3: No, and to make this a sports discussion, noted Tennessee
- 1:44:10Speaker 3: Vols fan, she's been on the field.
- 1:44:12Speaker 2: Okay, yeah.
- 1:44:13Speaker 3: Just an obligatory bring it back to sports on the
- 1:44:16Speaker 3: Sean O'Connell show. Yeah, she was recently on the field
- 1:44:22Speaker 3: singing the national anthem, right? Was that just last season
- 1:44:26Speaker 3: before a Vols game, Tennessee game? So, yeah, I've seen
- 1:44:30Speaker 3: her recently. She was still definitely looking good. You're like,
- 1:44:34Speaker 3: no way she's 80 looking at her like that.
- 1:44:36Speaker 2: Dolly?
- 1:44:38Speaker 3: Shout-out to the SNL celebrity Jeopardy, too.
- 1:44:43Speaker 2: I'll just leave that there. She's a– yeah, okay. Okay. Well,
- 1:44:48Speaker 2: leave that alone. Great songwriter. A lot of people don't
- 1:44:53Speaker 2: realize that some of the songs that were made iconic
- 1:44:57Speaker 2: and really launched careers of other artists were written by
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: Dolly Parton. She was a big-time songwriter. The most famous
- 1:45:10Speaker 2: was how Whitney Houston took her version of I Will
- 1:45:13Speaker 2: Always Love You and made it Huge.
- 1:45:17Speaker 6: Yeah. Massive.
- 1:45:19Speaker 2: That was her.
- 1:45:20Speaker 3: So I don't know if you saw on Twitter, there's
- 1:45:22Speaker 3: a video message from her nephew who said that Dolly
- 1:45:28Speaker 3: asked him to do this in the event whenever she
- 1:45:32Speaker 3: passed away to record a video for her fans. And
- 1:45:35Speaker 3: at the end of the video, there's a great picture
- 1:45:38Speaker 3: of Dolly's face, and it says, I will always love you.
- 1:45:42Speaker 2: I like that. Try not to cry when you watch that.
- 1:45:44Speaker 5: Wow.
- 1:45:45Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:45:47Speaker 2: Never been to Dollywood, but I hear it's cool. And
- 1:45:52Speaker 2: she's a great legacy of philanthropy and music and everything else.
- 1:45:57Speaker 3: And her and Kenny, because Kenny Rogers passed a couple
- 1:46:00Speaker 3: years ago, right? Her and Kenny singing Islands in the
- 1:46:03Speaker 3: Stream up in the great beyond right now. With their
- 1:46:09Speaker 3: spouses awkwardly looking on.
- 1:46:14Speaker 6: You got to make it weird.
- 1:46:16Speaker 2: I don't really know how to transition away from the
- 1:46:18Speaker 2: death of a mega star to sports talk, but that's
- 1:46:21Speaker 2: what we do here. We're we're on the Sean O'Connell show.
- 1:46:23Speaker 2: We don't mind a little awkwardness.
- 1:46:25Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:46:25Speaker 5: RIP.
- 1:46:27Speaker 2: By the way, are we in the first segment of
- 1:46:29Speaker 2: hour number three or the last segment of hour number two?
- 1:46:31Speaker 2: This is called Radio Magic. We are still in the
- 1:46:33Speaker 2: noon hour.
- 1:46:34Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:46:34Speaker 2: We're in the second.
- 1:46:35Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:46:35Speaker 2: We're in the tail end of hour number two for
- 1:46:37Speaker 2: the Daily Dump. All right. Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling.
- 1:46:39Speaker 2: But no guests. Allows us to make great radio magic. Yeah.
- 1:46:44Speaker 3: So I. No guests in the start of hour three
- 1:46:48Speaker 3: at one o'clock. So we'll just, we'll do a, we
- 1:46:50Speaker 3: can go a little longer as we. technically and our two,
- 1:46:54Speaker 3: because normally I'm very disciplined with the clock management. So
- 1:46:57Speaker 3: this will be, this is very strange.
- 1:46:58Speaker 2: This will be an outlier, but so we got the
- 1:47:01Speaker 2: news today that Utah has named their captains for the
- 1:47:06Speaker 2: 2026 season. Now the team elects these individuals to represent
- 1:47:11Speaker 2: them on the larger scale, the coin toss, things like that.
- 1:47:16Speaker 2: And there's one name that's on here. That is, I'll
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: say a bit of a surprise for me. Devin Dampier
- 1:47:27Speaker 2: named captain. That's not the one that surprises me. You're
- 1:47:30Speaker 2: starting quarterback who's wildly popular with his teammates. Even when
- 1:47:35Speaker 2: he showed up as a new player last year, Devin
- 1:47:38Speaker 2: Dampier is a team captain way. Sean Parker, everyone we
- 1:47:42Speaker 2: have talked to has, uh, sort of offered testament to
- 1:47:48Speaker 2: the hard work that way Sean Parker put in during
- 1:47:51Speaker 2: the off season, the lifting program, the conditioning program, spring ball,
- 1:47:56Speaker 2: all that stuff. So way Sean leading by example and
- 1:47:59Speaker 2: his teammates have rewarded that by electing him a captain,
- 1:48:02Speaker 2: a big Al Harrison, Alex Harrison, the projected starting center
- 1:48:08Speaker 2: for this team. You always want to have an offensive
- 1:48:11Speaker 2: lineman that is either like borderline captain or an official captain.
- 1:48:14Speaker 2: It's just, it's an important position to have not only
- 1:48:17Speaker 2: great players it, but like vocal leadership at, and Al
- 1:48:20Speaker 2: Harrison seems to have stepped into that role pretty comfortably.
- 1:48:24Speaker 2: So congratulations to him for being named a captain, John
- 1:48:29Speaker 2: Hall on the defensive side of the ball. He should
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: be your best linebacker this year. You can make a case.
- 1:48:34Speaker 2: He should be your best defensive player this year. He
- 1:48:37Speaker 2: has been named a captain. Nate Ritchie has been named
- 1:48:42Speaker 2: captain starting safety, or we think will be a starting safety.
- 1:48:45Speaker 2: Although that room is deep and talented and who knows
- 1:48:48Speaker 2: what it actually looks like. And this is the one
- 1:48:51Speaker 2: that surprises me. And I mean, this as a compliment,
- 1:48:53Speaker 2: because obviously you have earned your place with your teammates
- 1:48:57Speaker 2: in a way that the media is not fully aware of,
- 1:49:00Speaker 2: or at least this media member is not fully aware of.
- 1:49:03Speaker 2: Trey Reynolds has been named a team captain for this
- 1:49:06Speaker 2: Utah football team. He has never really been a full-time
- 1:49:09Speaker 2: starter as of yet. The expectation is, of course, that
- 1:49:13Speaker 2: he will be this year. He's been an excellent special
- 1:49:15Speaker 2: teams player and kind of a third-slash-fourth linebacker option and
- 1:49:20Speaker 2: a guy that there was always incredibly high upside on.
- 1:49:23Speaker 2: But Trey Reynolds being named a team captain denotes to
- 1:49:28Speaker 2: me that he has put himself into a different category
- 1:49:32Speaker 2: of not only leadership, but expectation and contribution by his
- 1:49:38Speaker 2: teammates in the NFL. Sometimes you get just like by default,
- 1:49:44Speaker 2: one of the really veteran special teams guys, who's a
- 1:49:47Speaker 2: consummate pro. And he's been around for a long time.
- 1:49:49Speaker 2: Like that guy will be named a team captain. It's
- 1:49:52Speaker 2: a bigger deal to be a team captain in college sports,
- 1:49:56Speaker 2: because it's like, everyone wants to be one when you're
- 1:49:59Speaker 2: at the pros and There's a plenty of guys. It's
- 1:50:01Speaker 2: their job. They're punching the clock. They don't want the
- 1:50:04Speaker 2: extra responsibility. They don't want to be a leader. They
- 1:50:06Speaker 2: don't want to be vocal. They're just like, they're there
- 1:50:08Speaker 2: to earn the paycheck to win the games are there
- 1:50:11Speaker 2: to do what they have to do. But it's not
- 1:50:13Speaker 2: the thing that it's just not quite the same atmospherically
- 1:50:18Speaker 2: or culturally or whatever else. It's the same way.
- 1:50:21Speaker 3: High school sports, obviously too, where like you, when you
- 1:50:27Speaker 3: vote for the captains, it's Who's the most popular guys
- 1:50:31Speaker 3: on the team? But as someone who was not one
- 1:50:33Speaker 3: of the best players on the basketball team that I
- 1:50:37Speaker 3: played on and thus was not someone that would be
- 1:50:44Speaker 3: ever considered captain, for me it was like, oh yeah,
- 1:50:48Speaker 3: that guy, he's cool. I definitely got to look up
- 1:50:51Speaker 3: to him.
- 1:50:53Speaker 2: You have that.
- 1:50:54Speaker 3: You have a lot of that with high school especially,
- 1:50:56Speaker 3: and I think you have that a little bit in
- 1:50:58Speaker 3: college still too.
- 1:50:59Speaker 2: In college, you want your captains to be guys that
- 1:51:02Speaker 2: are going to be on the field and are going
- 1:51:03Speaker 2: to be some of your best players on the field.
- 1:51:05Speaker 2: It's rare that someone is given a captain nod who's
- 1:51:10Speaker 2: not a starter and the best of the starters. Trey Reynolds,
- 1:51:15Speaker 2: there's no reason that he hasn't earned this from an
- 1:51:19Speaker 2: outsider's perspective because as much as we pay attention to
- 1:51:22Speaker 2: the program and try to have sources in the program,
- 1:51:24Speaker 2: things like that. I'm very, you're an outsider unless you're
- 1:51:28Speaker 2: actually in that locker room. And I just, I wasn't
- 1:51:31Speaker 2: fully aware that he had earned this place in the
- 1:51:34Speaker 2: hearts and minds of his teammates. And that is encouraging
- 1:51:37Speaker 2: for me because man, you want, I mean, yeah, your
- 1:51:42Speaker 2: linebackers are kind of like the heartbeat of a defense anyway,
- 1:51:46Speaker 2: but a guy that, Doesn't come in with like the preseason,
- 1:51:50Speaker 2: all conference type stuff, not a ton of returning production,
- 1:51:55Speaker 2: not a lot of starts under his belt. So good
- 1:51:57Speaker 2: for you, Trey Reynolds. I love to see this. And
- 1:52:00Speaker 2: I guess it just, it just, again, informs you of
- 1:52:05Speaker 2: the fact that there are changes happening up there and
- 1:52:09Speaker 2: we're going to see what this team actually looks like,
- 1:52:12Speaker 2: but This changes my expectation of Trey Reynolds as a player.
- 1:52:18Speaker 2: Like his stats. This changes what I expect from him
- 1:52:22Speaker 2: from a stats perspective. Fair or not, it does.
- 1:52:26Speaker 3: Yeah, and Sly has been one that was really high
- 1:52:30Speaker 3: on him as we saw him get on the field
- 1:52:35Speaker 3: for the first time a little bit last season. And
- 1:52:37Speaker 3: this offseason, I've heard Sly talk about him as a
- 1:52:41Speaker 3: guy that he expects... to make an even bigger leap
- 1:52:45Speaker 3: this year. Obviously, guys like Lander Barton, veterans like Lander
- 1:52:51Speaker 3: Barton have left. They're not coming back. He's not bouncing
- 1:52:55Speaker 3: back from what we've heard from the NFL.
- 1:52:57Speaker 2: No boomerang? No boomerang for Lander Barton. We'll see, I guess.
- 1:53:01Speaker 3: And that opens up an opportunity for a guy like
- 1:53:05Speaker 3: Trey Reynolds, who saw some time last year and played
- 1:53:08Speaker 3: well in, I would say, limited action. And you expect
- 1:53:14Speaker 3: even more when he's got the opportunity to play even more.
- 1:53:18Speaker 3: And now, to your point, when you got the C
- 1:53:22Speaker 3: on the jersey, it puts an even bigger spotlight on you.
- 1:53:26Speaker 3: That being said, though, OC, there are always those guys
- 1:53:30Speaker 3: every year, whether it's a backup quarterback that gets named
- 1:53:34Speaker 3: captain or was it Devin Kalfusi, who his last year
- 1:53:39Speaker 3: in the program didn't play very much. but was named captain.
- 1:53:43Speaker 3: He played a lot more the year before. I think
- 1:53:45Speaker 3: we expected him to be a bigger factor the last year,
- 1:53:48Speaker 3: but he just wasn't a big part of the rotation.
- 1:53:51Speaker 3: He was named a captain.
- 1:53:52Speaker 2: So I don't know. We'll see if any of these guys.
- 1:53:55Speaker 3: On the list this year are captains because they're very well-liked,
- 1:54:00Speaker 3: not necessarily because the team sees them as one of
- 1:54:03Speaker 3: the best players.
- 1:54:05Speaker 2: Captains have been named at the University of Utah. We
- 1:54:08Speaker 2: also had an announcement on Tuesday Some other important personalities.
- 1:54:12Speaker 2: Your radio crew. We knew this was going to be announced.
- 1:54:17Speaker 2: I was hoping it would be announced before Zach Moss
- 1:54:19Speaker 2: came on as a guest yesterday so we could talk
- 1:54:21Speaker 2: about the new role he's stepping into. But Bill Riley,
- 1:54:27Speaker 2: voice of the Utes, stays on the play-by-play duty. Stevenson
- 1:54:31Speaker 2: Sylvester moves up from the sideline into the booth. He
- 1:54:35Speaker 2: will be the color analyst on your games this year.
- 1:54:38Speaker 2: And Zach Moss will be doing radio sidelines on your
- 1:54:41Speaker 2: official Utah broadcast, which of course can be heard right here.
- 1:54:44Speaker 3: On your home of the youth ESPN 700. I think
- 1:54:47Speaker 3: sly people have heard him doing color on like spring
- 1:54:54Speaker 3: games on the PAC 12 network over the years and
- 1:54:56Speaker 3: on high school ball and on high school ball here locally.
- 1:54:59Speaker 3: I think that we already know Sly is going to
- 1:55:01Speaker 3: be really good. And we love having Zach on as
- 1:55:06Speaker 3: a guest on both our shows here. He's going to
- 1:55:10Speaker 3: be a regular guest on this show. He has been
- 1:55:12Speaker 3: a somewhat regular guest with Spence over the years during
- 1:55:15Speaker 3: Utah football season.
- 1:55:18Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 1:55:18Speaker 3: This is the first time he's ever done anything like this.
- 1:55:20Speaker 3: I'm sure that he's not going to be as good
- 1:55:24Speaker 3: as Sly was at sidelines right at the beginning, but
- 1:55:28Speaker 3: I As he gets more reps, I think he'll definitely
- 1:55:31Speaker 3: be really good. He's gotten really good as a guest
- 1:55:33Speaker 3: on the radio. I'm excited for this opportunity for him.
- 1:55:36Speaker 2: I'm curious because we've had for a couple of decades
- 1:55:41Speaker 2: now former quarterbacks as the color analyst. Let's be honest.
- 1:55:46Speaker 2: When you watch television and when you listen to radio,
- 1:55:51Speaker 2: eight times out of ten, the color analyst you're listening
- 1:55:54Speaker 2: to is usually a former quarterback. Of course, on BYU broadcast,
- 1:55:58Speaker 2: it's now Hans Olsen, who is a defensive lineman at BYU,
- 1:56:03Speaker 2: and then played offensive line for a cup of coffee
- 1:56:07Speaker 2: in the NFL and for a long time in the AFL. But,
- 1:56:11Speaker 2: you know, that's a different perspective. And then, of course,
- 1:56:14Speaker 2: Sly is not going to see the game the way
- 1:56:17Speaker 2: that former quarterbacks do. Scott Mitchell did a great job.
- 1:56:19Speaker 2: Scott Mitchell lives in St. George now.
- 1:56:21Speaker 3: Well, yeah, and also we should mention– even though the
- 1:56:25Speaker 3: games are on our station, we have no, at ESPN 700,
- 1:56:28Speaker 3: we have no say on who is the, it's all
- 1:56:31Speaker 3: University of Utah making that decision. So we don't know
- 1:56:33Speaker 3: for sure why a change was made. We can just, like,
- 1:56:37Speaker 3: that's for the guys on the Hill to answer. Yeah,
- 1:56:39Speaker 3: we're reacting to this the same way that the fans
- 1:56:41Speaker 3: react to this. We don't have a say in any
- 1:56:43Speaker 3: of this. But I'm curious because I like this.
- 1:56:48Speaker 2: There's not a lot of linebackers that are doing color
- 1:56:51Speaker 2: analyst work like on a television basis. J.J.
- 1:56:54Speaker 3: Watt, not necessarily a linebacker, but he's been a guy
- 1:56:58Speaker 3: the last couple of years, and now he's stepping in,
- 1:57:01Speaker 3: filling in for Tony Romo, probably going to take over
- 1:57:04Speaker 3: permanently for Tony Romo, but that distinction hasn't been made
- 1:57:08Speaker 3: yet on CBS. He's been like an outlier in the
- 1:57:13Speaker 3: NFL ranks as a guy who's looked at as a
- 1:57:15Speaker 3: lead analyst who is a defensive player, right?
- 1:57:20Speaker 2: So let's see. Matt Millen did a lot of color work.
- 1:57:24Speaker 2: for CBS, Fox, the NFL Network, and the Big Ten.
- 1:57:29Speaker 3: I feel like you'd see it every once in a while,
- 1:57:32Speaker 3: like with Millen, Chris Spielman, college football and NFL a
- 1:57:36Speaker 3: little bit as a defensive player, former defensive player, but
- 1:57:41Speaker 3: none of those guys have been the A team, on
- 1:57:44Speaker 3: the A broadcast team, at least not that I can recall.
- 1:57:48Speaker 3: This would be the first time in a long time
- 1:57:51Speaker 3: with J.J. Watt being on an on a network's a
- 1:57:54Speaker 3: broadcast team as the lead color.
- 1:57:57Speaker 2: Jonathan Vilma has done some stuff for Fox and ESPN.
- 1:58:01Speaker 2: Dick Butkus used to be the color analyst on, on
- 1:58:04Speaker 2: bears broadcast.
- 1:58:05Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:58:07Speaker 2: Rocky Boyman.
- 1:58:08Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:58:08Speaker 2: That's what I was trying to, Rocky Boyman was like
- 1:58:12Speaker 2: a okay. Linebacker in the NFL, good college player. And
- 1:58:15Speaker 2: he's done college football color commentary. He's on there like
- 1:58:19Speaker 2: their J team, Pete Burkett. You don't know who that is.
- 1:58:24Speaker 2: Neither do I. Former Minnesota Vikings linebacker. Shout out. Who
- 1:58:27Speaker 2: does color work on the Vikings radio network. And Pat Angerer,
- 1:58:32Speaker 2: who played for your Colts, right?
- 1:58:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:58:35Speaker 2: Pat Angerer is now on the Iowa broadcast. So there's
- 1:58:38Speaker 2: not a ton of linebackers doing this. Sly, obviously, with
- 1:58:41Speaker 2: NFL credentials.
- 1:58:43Speaker 3: And..
- 1:58:44Speaker 2: Exemplary college football credentials. He's stepping into a role most
- 1:58:48Speaker 2: linebackers don't get. And he's really sharp.
- 1:58:51Speaker 3: Anyone who's listened to him on the Utes broadcasts over
- 1:58:54Speaker 3: the years, and like I mentioned, doing high school work,
- 1:58:58Speaker 3: this is something he's been ready for. And I expect
- 1:59:01Speaker 3: him to be really good alongside Bill Upton.
- 1:59:04Speaker 2: Get Sly on the phone. I need to ask, is
- 1:59:05Speaker 2: he going to have to wear sleeves in the booth?
- 1:59:08Speaker 2: Because on the sideline, he's always got the pythons out.
- 1:59:11Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 1:59:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:59:13Speaker 6: Also..
- 1:59:14Speaker 2: If he's in the booth, he's not going to be
- 1:59:15Speaker 2: able to go on the field to argue with referees.
- 1:59:18Speaker 2: which is something that slide does during games. He's going
- 1:59:21Speaker 2: to be coaching Zach. He's like, Hey, if you're going
- 1:59:23Speaker 2: to be sidelines, you got it. You got to live
- 1:59:26Speaker 2: up to what I, to what I did. Okay. You
- 1:59:28Speaker 2: got to be in the game a little bit. Can
- 1:59:30Speaker 2: I say this? I'm not going to pretend like Porter,
- 1:59:34Speaker 2: our guy, Porter Larson, him and Zach Moss are like
- 1:59:36Speaker 2: real friends.
- 1:59:36Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:59:37Speaker 2: They took some classes together up at the U. They've
- 1:59:40Speaker 2: known each other a long time. They're like real friends,
- 1:59:42Speaker 2: play pickup basketball together, like a bunch of stuff like that.
- 1:59:45Speaker 2: They're actual real life friends. I know Zach Moss, like
- 1:59:48Speaker 2: all of you know, Zach Moss, he's a Utah. Great.
- 1:59:50Speaker 2: He's I've talked to him plenty of times on the sideline.
- 1:59:53Speaker 2: And now obviously on the show, Zach, I think this
- 1:59:56Speaker 2: is going to be a challenge for him. I think
- 1:59:59Speaker 2: he's stepping outside of the box a little bit for
- 2:00:02Speaker 2: himself because Zach is not an overly talkative, loquacious, loud
- 2:00:07Speaker 2: type person to be a sideline guy. Analyst to be
- 2:00:11Speaker 2: a sideline reporter, to be interviewing Morgan, as he comes
- 2:00:13Speaker 2: off the field, you kind of have to come out
- 2:00:16Speaker 2: of your box a little bit, come out of your
- 2:00:18Speaker 2: shell a little bit.
- 2:00:19Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:00:19Speaker 2: I think this is like, this is Zach Moss, at
- 2:00:22Speaker 2: least from my perspective, stretching himself a little bit, which
- 2:00:26Speaker 2: is cool. It's cool to see. Yeah.
- 2:00:28Speaker 3: And you saying that me mentioning that, Hey, he's not
- 2:00:32Speaker 3: going to be, he's probably not going to be incredible
- 2:00:35Speaker 3: at it.
- 2:00:36Speaker 2: Day one.
- 2:00:36Speaker 3: No one is when they start a new role. No, no,
- 2:00:39Speaker 3: That's not saying we have all the faith in the world.
- 2:00:43Speaker 3: Get Zach on the phone. Get Zach on the phone, James,
- 2:00:45Speaker 3: and tell him. Tell him exactly what I just said.
- 2:00:48Speaker 3: I don't think you're going to be good at this
- 2:00:49Speaker 3: at the start. Zach, that was James. That wasn't me.
- 2:00:54Speaker 3: It takes some reps. And you know what? Zach, I
- 2:00:57Speaker 3: still hope you want to come on the show on
- 2:00:59Speaker 3: Monday after me saying that.
- 2:01:01Speaker 2: No, like.
- 2:01:02Speaker 3: I think he's going to be really good at this,
- 2:01:04Speaker 3: and obviously someone with that high profile is always good
- 2:01:08Speaker 3: to have on your broadcast. Just excited to work with
- 2:01:16Speaker 3: this new broadcast team, for sure, coming up nine days away, OC.
- 2:01:22Speaker 2: Last thing I want to sneak into the Daily Dump
- 2:01:24Speaker 2: has nothing to do with Utah football, but there's no
- 2:01:26Speaker 2: appropriate place to put this except the Daily Dump, and
- 2:01:30Speaker 2: it's hilarious. Alexander Ovechkin went home to Russia for the
- 2:01:35Speaker 2: summer and made headlines there because he got 33 speeding
- 2:01:40Speaker 2: tickets and traffic violations just over the course of one summer.
- 2:01:45Speaker 2: 33 tickets for Alexander Ovechkin. Somebody did the work and
- 2:01:52Speaker 2: compared how many traffic violations are on record for Wayne
- 2:01:55Speaker 2: Gretzky in Canada whenever he went home to Canada. Can
- 2:01:59Speaker 2: you guess the number of his entire career? How many
- 2:02:03Speaker 2: moving violations, speeding tickets, traffic violations, Wayne Gretzky had during
- 2:02:07Speaker 2: his NHL career. Is it, is it a huge number?
- 2:02:11Speaker 2: It's the number zero. It's zero because he's Wayne Gretzky.
- 2:02:15Speaker 2: If you're a cop in Canada and you pull over
- 2:02:17Speaker 2: Wayne Gretzky. You're like, nevermind Wayne proceed.
- 2:02:21Speaker 3: No, he's because he's an incredible driver. He just doesn't
- 2:02:25Speaker 3: make those mistakes. He doesn't, he doesn't break the law.
- 2:02:28Speaker 2: If you're Ovechkin and you're in Russia and you get
- 2:02:30Speaker 2: pulled over, they give you tickets. Apparently what is wrong
- 2:02:33Speaker 2: with these Russians?
- 2:02:34Speaker 3: Another reason, another reason to just not like Russia for sure. Like,
- 2:02:37Speaker 3: come on, treat your legends correctly.
- 2:02:40Speaker 6: Russia.
- 2:02:41Speaker 2: Come on. 33 traffic tickets though. And one summer is
- 2:02:44Speaker 2: a problem. How do you get 33? Don't they suspend
- 2:02:47Speaker 2: your license after like four? I mean, Russia is a different,
- 2:02:51Speaker 2: a different world. So yeah, apparently it is because you
- 2:02:54Speaker 2: know what? For better or worse in the United States,
- 2:02:57Speaker 2: we don't give our legend speeding tickets. Now drunk driving.
- 2:03:03Speaker 2: You have to enforce that. Yeah. Failing to signal. If
- 2:03:07Speaker 2: you're Ovechkin and you get pulled over for that, you
- 2:03:09Speaker 2: just roll down the window and just be like, I'm, I'm,
- 2:03:13Speaker 2: I'm the greatest score in the history of the NHL.
- 2:03:15Speaker 2: I was like, oh, yeah, of course.
- 2:03:16Speaker 5: See ya.
- 2:03:17Speaker 2: Come on. Come on, Russia. Come on, Russian traffic tickets.
- 2:03:21Speaker 2: Get it together, Russia. You need to get it together
- 2:03:23Speaker 2: in a lot of ways, Russia. Yeah, this is not
- 2:03:26Speaker 2: the only way. All right.
- 2:03:28Speaker 3: Can I just share a couple people chiming in on
- 2:03:32Speaker 3: the Dolly conversation?
- 2:03:33Speaker 2: If you really want to go back there.
- 2:03:35Speaker 3: Have James send the heart with bandage emoji to make
- 2:03:38Speaker 3: it right. Send that to my wife.
- 2:03:41Speaker 2: You know what?
- 2:03:42Speaker 3: Thank you. Thank you for that advice. I think I'll...
- 2:03:46Speaker 3: Take you up on that. And then our guy, Derek,
- 2:03:48Speaker 3: I told my wife about Dolly Parton. She said, I
- 2:03:50Speaker 3: guess she doesn't work nine to five anymore. You probably
- 2:03:55Speaker 3: thought I wrote that text. That's that's a, I loved it. Derek,
- 2:04:02Speaker 3: shout out to you.
- 2:04:05Speaker 2: Are you allowed to divulge why Scott Mitchell is no
- 2:04:07Speaker 2: longer a member of the broadcast team? I have no
- 2:04:10Speaker 2: idea why he's no longer a member of the broadcast team.
- 2:04:12Speaker 2: I don't know if there is a reason why. scott
- 2:04:14Speaker 2: we i know this scott mitchell lives in saint george
- 2:04:18Speaker 2: that might be why could be yeah just too far
- 2:04:21Speaker 2: away who knows but again that's one of the reasons
- 2:04:24Speaker 2: because we've gotten some of the you saw the twit
- 2:04:27Speaker 2: you saw in twitter oc a lot of people like
- 2:04:29Speaker 2: oh what happened to scott mitchell we've gotten some texts
- 2:04:32Speaker 2: about that is he gonna be on the broadcast see
- 2:04:34Speaker 2: whenever it that's we're not part of that decision making
- 2:04:37Speaker 2: so we Don't know. By the way, the university, I
- 2:04:40Speaker 2: don't even know if you realize this. I texted Scott
- 2:04:42Speaker 2: about this. Um, somebody sent in a, a photo like
- 2:04:47Speaker 2: a Scott Mitchell five by seven that they wanted him
- 2:04:50Speaker 2: to autograph. Somebody sent it to the station like last week.
- 2:04:55Speaker 2: Scott hasn't been on the air for a while, but
- 2:04:57Speaker 2: they sent it here and we're like with the self-addressed
- 2:05:00Speaker 2: stamped envelope, text it to Scott. And he was just like, well,
- 2:05:04Speaker 2: I'm not there. So you could sign it for him.
- 2:05:06Speaker 6: I didn't. I didn't.
- 2:05:08Speaker 2: You didn't forge Scott's signature. I should have. You should
- 2:05:12Speaker 2: have just put your signature on Scott's picture. That would
- 2:05:16Speaker 2: be amazing. If you get an autograph, do you really
- 2:05:19Speaker 2: try to read it? Cause no one can read autographs anyway.
- 2:05:22Speaker 2: I just signed it. Sean O'Connell. And someone's like, Oh,
- 2:05:24Speaker 2: that's nice. Thanks, Scott. Signed it. PFL champion. If you
- 2:05:30Speaker 2: have to explain why you're signing it, then you shouldn't
- 2:05:33Speaker 2: be signing.
- 2:05:33Speaker 3: Anything just to see if they notice like, Oh, Scott
- 2:05:37Speaker 3: Mitchell's not a PFL champion.
- 2:05:39Speaker 2: What?
- 2:05:40Speaker 9: All right.
- 2:05:41Speaker 2: Well, because of the magic of the truck with the
- 2:05:44Speaker 2: duck and Valley plumbing, heating and cooling, we're actually 24
- 2:05:48Speaker 2: minutes into our number three and we're actually going to
- 2:05:50Speaker 2: start our number three next. Can you believe that? It's
- 2:05:53Speaker 2: the Sean O'Connell show on ESPN 700 and 92 on FM.
- 2:06:03Speaker 7: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 2:06:07Speaker 7: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:06:11Speaker 9: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700
- 2:06:28Speaker 9: and 92.1 FM. All sound from Utah football camp is
- 2:06:34Speaker 9: available at ESPN, 700 sports.com and on the ESPN 700 app.
- 2:06:42Speaker 9: Our friends over at advanced window products are offering $ 2, 500
- 2:06:45Speaker 9: off 10 windows or more right now.
- 2:06:48Speaker 2: Lifetime warranty on the windows. We've talked about this. I
- 2:06:52Speaker 2: don't think you fully appreciate what a lifetime warranty means.
- 2:06:57Speaker 2: Right now, Nate Orchard and Jake Weber, who are the
- 2:06:59Speaker 2: current owners of Advanced Windows, they are servicing warranties offered
- 2:07:06Speaker 2: by the previous owners from years ago, in some cases
- 2:07:10Speaker 2: from decades ago. It would be very easy. for young
- 2:07:15Speaker 2: owners of an established business, new owners to say, oh yeah,
- 2:07:19Speaker 2: that promise was made between you and the people who
- 2:07:22Speaker 2: came before us. We don't have to do that. It's legally,
- 2:07:26Speaker 2: it's a separate entity now, but that's not how they
- 2:07:29Speaker 2: do business. They take care of the customer, even if
- 2:07:32Speaker 2: it wasn't their customer, even if they never saw a
- 2:07:35Speaker 2: dime from the transaction. They take care of the customer.
- 2:07:38Speaker 2: The reputation of the business, the quality of the business
- 2:07:41Speaker 2: is what matters to them. There's not a lot of
- 2:07:44Speaker 2: businesses left, even local companies. There's not a lot of
- 2:07:47Speaker 2: people that are doing it the right way every single day,
- 2:07:50Speaker 2: the way they are at Advanced Windows. Nate Orchard has
- 2:07:55Speaker 2: taken his diligence, his preparation, his obsessiveness about foot and
- 2:08:00Speaker 2: he has placed that on being the best window guy
- 2:08:03Speaker 2: in the world if you're a homeowner that benefits you
- 2:08:06Speaker 2: because now there's a one-stop shop right here in salt
- 2:08:09Speaker 2: lake city where the sales the installation the warranty coverage
- 2:08:12Speaker 2: are all done by the same people from the same
- 2:08:15Speaker 2: team no middlemen no run around no craziness Get yourself
- 2:08:21Speaker 2: some new windows, beautify your home, increase the energy efficiency
- 2:08:25Speaker 2: of your home, take advantage of the many financing options
- 2:08:28Speaker 2: that they've got. The whole point for advanced windows is
- 2:08:32Speaker 2: to make it affordable and a purchase that you are
- 2:08:34Speaker 2: happy with when you are finished, worth the money that
- 2:08:38Speaker 2: you spent on it. And right now, $ 2, 500 off when
- 2:08:42Speaker 2: you purchase 10 windows or more. 801-850-9100, advancedwindows.com. As always,
- 2:08:47Speaker 2: tell them that OC sent you. We started the show
- 2:08:51Speaker 2: today talking about some potential changes happening in and around
- 2:08:56Speaker 2: college football, in and around college athletics. The Big Ten
- 2:09:01Speaker 2: has decided to draw a line in the sand. According
- 2:09:04Speaker 2: to multiple sources, Pete Thamel was the one who really
- 2:09:07Speaker 2: took it public first. The Big Ten is putting together
- 2:09:11Speaker 2: a new rule that will prevent players who have signed
- 2:09:15Speaker 2: a pro contract, who have been in a training camp,
- 2:09:18Speaker 2: who have declared for the NFL draft and not withdrawn
- 2:09:21Speaker 2: their name, this will stop them from returning, from boomeranging
- 2:09:26Speaker 2: back into college athletics. Even the SEC, while they put
- 2:09:31Speaker 2: out a statement, no rule yet, they put out a statement, though,
- 2:09:35Speaker 2: saying players should not be returning to college sports after
- 2:09:42Speaker 2: flirting with the pros, after dipping their toes in the
- 2:09:44Speaker 2: professional waters. The SEC a little bit softer on this line,
- 2:09:50Speaker 2: it would appear, for obvious reason, because at least one
- 2:09:53Speaker 2: of their member institutions, Louisiana State University, who has a
- 2:09:57Speaker 2: significant amount of influence and money involved in all SEC dealings,
- 2:10:02Speaker 2: they are ground zero right now for all of the
- 2:10:05Speaker 2: bounce back, all of the boomerang players, basketball and football. R.J.
- 2:10:10Speaker 2: Lewis was part of an NBA trade. He's been part
- 2:10:14Speaker 2: of three NBA teams recently. He's coming back and has
- 2:10:17Speaker 2: been declared through temporary injunction from a Louisiana judge eligible
- 2:10:21Speaker 2: to compete in this upcoming NCAA season. Noam Yacob for
- 2:10:24Speaker 2: Utah basketball. He can't play. He's been told, nope, you're
- 2:10:29Speaker 2: not going to be eligible. Utah has to put their
- 2:10:33Speaker 2: contingency plan in place. Noam Yacob was not on an
- 2:10:37Speaker 2: NBA roster, was not in an NBA training camp, was
- 2:10:39Speaker 2: not an NBA spring league, summer league.
- 2:10:43Speaker 3: The only thing you could say about Noam Yakov is
- 2:10:45Speaker 3: he did declare for the draft and you never withdrew.
- 2:10:48Speaker 3: He didn't go drafted, but so did Jackson Kohler.
- 2:10:53Speaker 2: Jackson Kohler, by the way, Michigan state, Utah jazz summer league.
- 2:10:59Speaker 2: Like there's, there's pictures of him in the jazz uniform.
- 2:11:03Speaker 2: He's going to be playing for BYU. So The convoluted
- 2:11:07Speaker 2: nature and the inconsistent nature of what works, what doesn't
- 2:11:10Speaker 2: work is problematic. Nobody can deny that. The Big Ten
- 2:11:15Speaker 2: is becoming the first conference, the first league to step
- 2:11:17Speaker 2: up and say, we're not messing with this. We're not
- 2:11:19Speaker 2: doing this. And they mean it in football and in basketball.
- 2:11:25Speaker 2: Interestingly enough... This has been a storyline in basketball for
- 2:11:29Speaker 2: months now. After the five-for-five eligibility got put into place,
- 2:11:34Speaker 2: basketball players started to say, oh, wait, hold on. This
- 2:11:37Speaker 2: NBA thing didn't work out the way that I want,
- 2:11:39Speaker 2: and I now have potentially a fifth year of eligibility.
- 2:11:44Speaker 2: I just finished up. I just cleaned out my locker
- 2:11:48Speaker 2: a month ago, and now this ruling comes down that
- 2:11:50Speaker 2: it's five years to play five in college sports. I
- 2:11:54Speaker 2: want that fifth year. No, you can't have that fifth year. Well,
- 2:11:57Speaker 2: my lawyer says I can, and this judge says I can.
- 2:11:59Speaker 2: And so hence this flood of players. And I shouldn't
- 2:12:02Speaker 2: say flood. It's really a trickle. It's only like a
- 2:12:04Speaker 2: dozen or so players coming back in. And the NCAA
- 2:12:07Speaker 2: didn't take any hard line approaches. The conferences didn't take
- 2:12:11Speaker 2: any hard line approaches. Suddenly when it affects football, when
- 2:12:17Speaker 2: guys are coming out of a Tampa Bay Buccaneers training
- 2:12:20Speaker 2: camp and preseason games where they had three tackles coming
- 2:12:23Speaker 2: back and saying, I'm going to play for LSU guys.
- 2:12:27Speaker 2: When a guy gets cut from Cleveland after getting cut
- 2:12:29Speaker 2: from New England, he's like, I'm going to go play
- 2:12:33Speaker 2: for my old Ole Miss coach. I'm going to be
- 2:12:34Speaker 2: at LSU. See you guys later. As soon as it
- 2:12:38Speaker 2: starts to affect college football, now people react. Now people's
- 2:12:44Speaker 2: attention is perked up. What can we do about this?
- 2:12:48Speaker 2: What should we do about this? I'm really curious to
- 2:12:51Speaker 2: see how the Big 12 comes out. They're meeting about it.
- 2:12:54Speaker 2: The ACC is going to meet about it. The big
- 2:12:56Speaker 2: 10 is taking what I will call the high road.
- 2:12:59Speaker 2: They're being the traditionalists. They're saying, guys, this is not
- 2:13:02Speaker 2: good for the sport. It's not good for the current
- 2:13:04Speaker 2: college athlete. It's not good for the high school athlete
- 2:13:07Speaker 2: or the Juco athlete. Let college sports be for people
- 2:13:10Speaker 2: who have not played pro sports. Part of this five
- 2:13:13Speaker 2: for five thing was to stop folks who should be
- 2:13:17Speaker 2: in the pro ranks from staying in college. One of
- 2:13:22Speaker 2: the big complaints with the COVID years was since that
- 2:13:27Speaker 2: 2020 freakishness that allowed effectively everyone to get two extra
- 2:13:30Speaker 2: years of eligibility, you had 25-year-olds, 29-year-olds playing on college
- 2:13:35Speaker 2: screens on college teams last year.
- 2:13:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:13:40Speaker 3: Way and way more than just the outlier. It used
- 2:13:46Speaker 3: to just be, Oh my gosh, did you hear a
- 2:13:48Speaker 3: team has a 29 year old?
- 2:13:50Speaker 2: It used to be literally what it used to be
- 2:13:51Speaker 2: was guys that went to jail in high school or
- 2:13:54Speaker 2: right out of high school or guys that joined the
- 2:13:57Speaker 2: military right out of high school. Or I guess there
- 2:14:01Speaker 2: was the rare occasion of guys who went on a mission.
- 2:14:04Speaker 2: They just never enrolled.
- 2:14:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:14:06Speaker 6: Right.
- 2:14:07Speaker 2: Or they never re-enrolled.
- 2:14:08Speaker 3: You had, wasn't there at least one of, didn't, it
- 2:14:14Speaker 3: wasn't any of those circumstances, but they hadn't been in
- 2:14:17Speaker 3: college yet. And they, they're like, they're like 30 something.
- 2:14:21Speaker 3: And like, I'm going to try playing football. And they
- 2:14:24Speaker 3: made the team. I think we had at least one
- 2:14:26Speaker 3: of those before this too. Like, but now it's like,
- 2:14:30Speaker 3: every team had multiple of those guys.
- 2:14:32Speaker 2: It seemed like there's a guy right now who's like
- 2:14:34Speaker 2: 45 years old. Who's on a D three college football
- 2:14:37Speaker 2: team because he just never enrolled in college. And then,
- 2:14:41Speaker 2: you know, he got in shape late and was just like,
- 2:14:42Speaker 2: I'm going to go back and I'm going to do this.
- 2:14:44Speaker 2: That's fine. It's probably, it's supposed to be like a,
- 2:14:48Speaker 2: a once in a lifetime, like an outlier thing.
- 2:14:50Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:14:50Speaker 2: I remember South Carolina many years ago had a guy
- 2:14:53Speaker 2: who was a military. He did a career in the military.
- 2:14:56Speaker 2: He did his 20 years like in the army or whatever.
- 2:14:59Speaker 2: came out at 38 years old and walked on and
- 2:15:02Speaker 2: played special teams for South Carolina. Like great story. That's fun.
- 2:15:06Speaker 2: That's cool. Indiana had nine 25 year olds on their
- 2:15:10Speaker 2: team last year and they won a national championship. So
- 2:15:13Speaker 2: there were people in college sports looking at it and going,
- 2:15:15Speaker 2: this is bad. We don't want these grown men with
- 2:15:20Speaker 2: their grown men bodies playing against teenagers so let's fix
- 2:15:25Speaker 2: this let's do five years to play five the college
- 2:15:28Speaker 2: protect college sports act has been proposed to say it
- 2:15:33Speaker 2: is five years consecutively from when you turn 19 or
- 2:15:38Speaker 2: when you graduate high school whichever comes first right so
- 2:15:45Speaker 2: that's the proposed fix The current fix is not in place.
- 2:15:50Speaker 2: The current fix is falling now to the conferences that
- 2:15:53Speaker 2: are going to say, in the Big Ten's case, we
- 2:15:56Speaker 2: can't do this. We're not accepting boomerang players, and they're
- 2:15:59Speaker 2: not accepting them, especially in football. LSU wants to, but
- 2:16:03Speaker 2: the SEC says that shouldn't happen. Are they going to
- 2:16:06Speaker 2: fight with one of their own member institutions over it?
- 2:16:09Speaker 2: As far as we know... In football, I don't see
- 2:16:12Speaker 2: any boomerang players trying to get on to like a
- 2:16:14Speaker 2: Texas Tech roster, an Arizona State roster, a Utah roster.
- 2:16:19Speaker 2: If that happens, will the Big 12 say, no, Kenny Dillingham,
- 2:16:23Speaker 2: you can't have this guy? Will anybody say, Joey McGuire,
- 2:16:29Speaker 2: we've already beat you up all offseason long. You also
- 2:16:32Speaker 2: can't have this guy who was on the Cleveland Browns
- 2:16:34Speaker 2: last week. Is this Brendan Sorsby's way of coming back? No,
- 2:16:38Speaker 2: I'm just kidding. He's not. part of the nfl right
- 2:16:41Speaker 2: now byu is doing this in basketball yeah jackson kohler
- 2:16:46Speaker 2: was on a utah jazz roster sheet and now he's
- 2:16:49Speaker 2: on the byu roster okay that is antithetical to the
- 2:16:56Speaker 2: quote-unquote purity of college sports if that even still exists
- 2:17:02Speaker 2: what i so jerem brought up.
- 2:17:06Speaker 3: That he's excited to see what the Big 12 does
- 2:17:10Speaker 3: about this. He's intrigued by that. And it made me
- 2:17:15Speaker 3: get kind of an evil idea for the Big 12.
- 2:17:20Speaker 3: Be the last ones to make a hardline statement about this.
- 2:17:26Speaker 3: Let the Big 10s already done it. Let the SEC
- 2:17:28Speaker 3: do it next. Let the ACC do it next. And
- 2:17:30Speaker 3: then be the outlaw conference and just say, hey, guys,
- 2:17:33Speaker 3: come on in.
- 2:17:34Speaker 2: I don't think you can afford to do that. That's
- 2:17:38Speaker 2: the way you get good at that. That might be
- 2:17:40Speaker 2: an easy way to.
- 2:17:43Speaker 3: Quote unquote, cheat the system and get, and all of
- 2:17:46Speaker 3: a sudden be really good at football compared to the
- 2:17:48Speaker 3: other four conferences.
- 2:17:49Speaker 6: I should.
- 2:17:50Speaker 2: Say this though, because I was very up in arms
- 2:17:53Speaker 2: about the possibility of this happening in basketball last year
- 2:17:57Speaker 2: with all the G league guys that were coming back onto,
- 2:18:00Speaker 2: was there, there wasn't a guy on BYU's roster too
- 2:18:04Speaker 2: last year.
- 2:18:04Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:18:05Speaker 2: He didn't end up being a factor. but he scored
- 2:18:09Speaker 2: like a point and a half a game or something.
- 2:18:12Speaker 2: So this is the second time that BYU is kind
- 2:18:16Speaker 2: of taking advantage of this system. And of course we should,
- 2:18:19Speaker 2: we should bring up, if we're going to bring, bring
- 2:18:22Speaker 2: up BYU, we should bring up a guy like Lucas Longarita,
- 2:18:25Speaker 2: who Utah got in mid season, but it's not quite
- 2:18:28Speaker 2: the same, but still. So I, the big 12, if
- 2:18:35Speaker 2: you're a Brett, your mark, right? He's got an angel
- 2:18:38Speaker 2: on one shoulder. He's got a devil on the other.
- 2:18:41Speaker 2: And the devil on the other shoulder is saying, we
- 2:18:44Speaker 2: could be the conference where these guys who are borderline
- 2:18:47Speaker 2: NFL players can come back and play. We could just
- 2:18:52Speaker 2: wait it out.
- 2:18:53Speaker 3: And then once all the other ones have said, we're
- 2:18:55Speaker 3: not taking them, we could be the ones, okay, you
- 2:18:57Speaker 3: can come here.
- 2:18:58Speaker 2: Are we willing to do that? And I hope the
- 2:19:00Speaker 2: answer is no. Yeah, I do too.
- 2:19:02Speaker 3: I just, I kind of was like, from a if this,
- 2:19:07Speaker 3: if this were just fiction, right? Oh, see, we all,
- 2:19:10Speaker 3: we all think about like, that'd be a fun novel
- 2:19:13Speaker 3: to read. That'd be a fun TV show to see
- 2:19:15Speaker 3: how to play that out in a fictional world. Like
- 2:19:18Speaker 3: some of these ideas, but then when it comes to
- 2:19:22Speaker 3: real world, I think most of us that think, Oh,
- 2:19:24Speaker 3: that that's kind of a fun concept for, for fiction.
- 2:19:29Speaker 3: If it's, if it ends up being real, we're all like, no,
- 2:19:31Speaker 3: that's terrible. And I feel like, That's what came into
- 2:19:34Speaker 3: my mind as Jerem was like, I wonder what the
- 2:19:36Speaker 3: Big 12 is going to do about this.
- 2:19:39Speaker 2: Maybe they'll just be the conference.
- 2:19:41Speaker 3: Maybe there'll be a conference that says, no, we're fine
- 2:19:44Speaker 3: taking these bounce back boomerang players. And it made me go, huh,
- 2:19:49Speaker 3: that kind of would be kind of fun to have
- 2:19:53Speaker 3: an outlaw conference. But that's only in like a fantasy
- 2:19:56Speaker 3: world that that's fun. That's not really fun in the
- 2:19:59Speaker 3: real world.
- 2:19:59Speaker 6: I don't think.
- 2:20:02Speaker 2: All right, we've got to take another break here so
- 2:20:04Speaker 2: we can attempt to stay near o'clock. We'll do that.
- 2:20:09Speaker 2: I'm going to give away some Utah State Fair passes
- 2:20:13Speaker 2: in the final segment, which is not next. We're going
- 2:20:15Speaker 2: to do a short segment, then another break. Then after that,
- 2:20:18Speaker 2: that's when I'm going to give away four passes to
- 2:20:21Speaker 2: the Utah State Fair at the Fair Park coming up
- 2:20:24Speaker 2: September 10th through the 20th. Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 700,
- 2:20:27Speaker 2: 92 on FM. Carry on my wayward son. There'll be
- 2:20:34Speaker 2: peace when you are done. We're home of the best
- 2:20:38Speaker 2: inside of your youth.
- 2:20:40Speaker 4: Let's get back to OC from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio
- 2:20:43Speaker 4: of ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 2:21:03Speaker 2: I have great news for you. We have college football,
- 2:21:05Speaker 2: real college football this weekend. If there's bad news associated
- 2:21:09Speaker 2: with this, it's for you Saturday golfers out there because
- 2:21:12Speaker 2: your Saturday golf now is either going to make you
- 2:21:15Speaker 2: miss college football games or you just can't do it.
- 2:21:23Speaker 2: That means this weekend is a perfect weekend for you
- 2:21:26Speaker 2: to get out there to Stansbury Park Golf Course and
- 2:21:29Speaker 2: finally try it out if you haven't yet. $ 50 for
- 2:21:32Speaker 2: a round of 18 on weekends. $ 45 if you can
- 2:21:34Speaker 2: make it out there on a weekday, which should be
- 2:21:36Speaker 2: the move moving forward so you don't have to miss
- 2:21:39Speaker 2: the full slate of college football. You just get on
- 2:21:42Speaker 2: the I-80. You hop on out to Tooele County. You
- 2:21:45Speaker 2: go to Stansbury Park Golf Course. The greens look great
- 2:21:49Speaker 2: right now despite the heat, the wind, the absolute baking
- 2:21:53Speaker 2: temperatures that we've had. Plenty of shady spots on the course.
- 2:21:57Speaker 2: Challenging enough that it's going to keep you awake. Not
- 2:22:01Speaker 2: so bad that you're going to lose a whole sleeve
- 2:22:02Speaker 2: of balls. All right? They've got kind of a perfect
- 2:22:05Speaker 2: mixture out there. The pace of play is excellent. A
- 2:22:07Speaker 2: little less crowded than most of the places up and
- 2:22:09Speaker 2: down the Wasatch Front here in the Valley. And really,
- 2:22:13Speaker 2: your time commitment getting out there and back, because there's
- 2:22:15Speaker 2: not a lot of traffic, is going to be equal. Plus,
- 2:22:19Speaker 2: gives you an excuse to get out there to Tooele County,
- 2:22:21Speaker 2: which I promise is a lot different than the last
- 2:22:24Speaker 2: time you went. been a huge amount of development out there.
- 2:22:28Speaker 2: It's really, really built up. So go to Stansbury Park
- 2:22:31Speaker 2: Golf Course. Tell them OC sent you. Book your tee
- 2:22:35Speaker 2: time right now at stansburypark.gov slash golf course. stansburypark.gov slash
- 2:22:39Speaker 2: golf course. Great rates. Gorgeous greens. Minutes away. Totally worth it.
- 2:22:44Speaker 2: Get on the I-80 and hop out there right now.
- 2:22:47Speaker 2: Even if you don't have clubs in the trunk, you
- 2:22:49Speaker 2: can just rent them while you're there. Clubs, cart, food,
- 2:22:54Speaker 2: and a beautiful course waiting for you. You could be
- 2:22:58Speaker 2: out there by about two 30. Just tell your boss
- 2:23:01Speaker 2: you're taking an early day. Stansberrypark.gov slash golf course. All right.
- 2:23:10Speaker 2: This is good news that James put in his, his rundown.
- 2:23:15Speaker 2: I think it's good news. I think we should call
- 2:23:17Speaker 2: it good news because while it's a sobering number, A
- 2:23:22Speaker 2: new study says that 25% of NFL players whose brains
- 2:23:26Speaker 2: were examined after they passed away, this is between 2016
- 2:23:30Speaker 2: and 2021, they had CTE. Now, why do I say
- 2:23:36Speaker 2: this is good news? Because the last time we saw
- 2:23:40Speaker 2: a study like this, it was like 97 out of
- 2:23:44Speaker 2: 100 players had signs of CTE, which would suggest that
- 2:23:49Speaker 2: maybe things could be improving. Now, whether that's The nutrition
- 2:23:52Speaker 2: is better. The care is better. These are players from
- 2:23:55Speaker 2: a later generation where the helmets were better, I think
- 2:23:58Speaker 2: is probably the most likely explanation for the reduction, such
- 2:24:02Speaker 2: a drastic reduction. Because the first time we saw a
- 2:24:05Speaker 2: study like this, it was players, a lot of players
- 2:24:08Speaker 2: who were spending most of their careers in the NFL
- 2:24:11Speaker 2: in the 70s and 80s. And if you go back
- 2:24:14Speaker 2: and you look at helmet technology from the 70s and 80s,
- 2:24:16Speaker 2: it was bad. All right. If you passed away from
- 2:24:20Speaker 2: 2016 to 2021, more likely that you were in the
- 2:24:25Speaker 2: late 80s, 90s, maybe even 2000s range. I think that
- 2:24:30Speaker 2: if I were guessing, a reduction in the prevalence of
- 2:24:34Speaker 2: CTE could be at least partially explained by improved helmet technology.
- 2:24:40Speaker 2: It's also worth stating that there are current studies being
- 2:24:45Speaker 2: underwent right now where like Matt Hasselbeck famously volunteered to
- 2:24:48Speaker 2: be part of this thing. They are trying to find
- 2:24:50Speaker 2: a way to diagnose CTE in living people. So you
- 2:24:54Speaker 2: don't have to examine post-mortem the brain of people who
- 2:24:57Speaker 2: died between 2016 and 2021. And hopefully when we get
- 2:25:01Speaker 2: the 2021 to 2026 cohort of brains that have been examined,
- 2:25:06Speaker 2: hopefully the one in four is now one in 10
- 2:25:09Speaker 2: or something like that. I can't tell you, with any
- 2:25:13Speaker 2: kind of confidence, whether that number can improve beyond 25%,
- 2:25:17Speaker 2: but the 25% number is way better than the last
- 2:25:21Speaker 2: big study. That was like 90 something percent. So I
- 2:25:26Speaker 2: guess we're happy about this.
- 2:25:28Speaker 3: Yeah, it, it absolutely is encouraging that the number may
- 2:25:32Speaker 3: be going down. I will just read this from the
- 2:25:34Speaker 3: ESPN story just to add some context to the number though. Um,
- 2:25:41Speaker 3: one of the doctors, the actual, the study's lead author, Dr.
- 2:25:46Speaker 3: Daniel Danish, Dan Shavar, which I no doubt just butchered
- 2:25:52Speaker 3: the last name there, but the lead author of the
- 2:25:55Speaker 3: study says the estimate of 25% is on the, quote,
- 2:25:59Speaker 3: low end. The study found that the maximum possible prevalence
- 2:26:03Speaker 3: of CTE was around 70, it was around 97%. So
- 2:26:07Speaker 3: the truth is somewhere in the middle, he says, so
- 2:26:09Speaker 3: just That is the lowest possible one. Hopefully, that's the
- 2:26:16Speaker 3: reality of what the actual findings of CTE is.
- 2:26:20Speaker 2: Can I be a little bit of a stickler here?
- 2:26:24Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:26:25Speaker 2: If you give me a range of 25% to 97%,
- 2:26:28Speaker 2: I'm going to need you to narrow it down more
- 2:26:30Speaker 2: than that. Absolutely. That's exactly..
- 2:26:33Speaker 3: I'm like, now you've just confused the crap out of me, ESPN,
- 2:26:36Speaker 3: with the way that you've framed this story and... this
- 2:26:40Speaker 3: study with the way that you've just given us a
- 2:26:42Speaker 3: gigantic range like that. So is it, does that mean
- 2:26:46Speaker 3: like it's right down the middle? It's somewhere like 50
- 2:26:50Speaker 3: or 60%.
- 2:26:51Speaker 2: I don't know. Hopefully it's the 25%. I read this
- 2:26:54Speaker 2: this morning and I was like, I'm going to put
- 2:26:55Speaker 2: a Twitter poll up. If you're playing football today, would
- 2:26:58Speaker 2: you wear a guardian cap or the extra head protection,
- 2:27:02Speaker 2: whatever the other guardian cap equivalent is called? Would you
- 2:27:05Speaker 2: wear that in games? Cause they're legal. You can wear
- 2:27:08Speaker 2: them in games. Very few players actually do. If you
- 2:27:12Speaker 2: were playing football today, would you wear a guardian cap
- 2:27:14Speaker 2: or extra head protection in games? Knowing what we know
- 2:27:17Speaker 2: about CTE, the dangers of, 57% of people said no.
- 2:27:25Speaker 2: You're wearing them in practice. They're all wearing them in
- 2:27:27Speaker 2: practice now. Would you wear them in games? 57% said no.
- 2:27:33Speaker 2: That is, there's no reason not to, except they don't
- 2:27:37Speaker 2: look cool.
- 2:27:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:27:40Speaker 3: Yeah, and maybe they're not very effective. We don't actually
- 2:27:45Speaker 3: know how effective they are. So if you're one of
- 2:27:48Speaker 3: those people that are like, well, I'm going to look
- 2:27:50Speaker 3: dumb and it's not going to help me that much,
- 2:27:54Speaker 3: then I'm not going to wear it, I guess not.
- 2:27:57Speaker 3: I understand where you might be coming from there, but
- 2:28:01Speaker 3: if there's even a 1% chance of extra protection, 1%
- 2:28:08Speaker 3: less of a chance you're going to have a traumatic
- 2:28:11Speaker 3: brain injury or develop a terrible disease like CTE later,
- 2:28:19Speaker 3: for me, that's enough for me to wear the Guardian cap.
- 2:28:22Speaker 2: I don't care how I look if that's the case.
- 2:28:24Speaker 2: But other people think differently. According to publications, guardian caps
- 2:28:28Speaker 2: reduce linear and rotational impact forces 10 to 33 percent.
- 2:28:33Speaker 2: What does that mean? According to the NFL self-reporting from
- 2:28:37Speaker 2: the NFL, they reported 50 to 60 percent drop in
- 2:28:41Speaker 2: practice concussions for position groups required to wear guardian caps
- 2:28:46Speaker 2: during training camp. So that's what it's designed to do.
- 2:28:50Speaker 2: Prevent concussion. The NFL says it's working. The efficacy of
- 2:28:56Speaker 2: a Guardian Cap soft-shell padding observed an average reduction of
- 2:29:01Speaker 2: head impact severity by 9%. So would you, for a
- 2:29:05Speaker 2: 9% reduction in force, would you wear something that makes
- 2:29:10Speaker 2: you look like a lollipop? Right now, 57% of people
- 2:29:14Speaker 2: say no. I pass no judgment either way. Those are
- 2:29:19Speaker 2: just the poll results. All right, we'll give away a
- 2:29:22Speaker 2: four-pack of tickets to the Utah State Fair and wrap
- 2:29:24Speaker 2: up the show next. ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. Working
- 2:29:27Speaker 2: nine to five. What a way to make a living.
- 2:29:33Speaker 2: Getting by.
- 2:29:35Speaker 4: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show, your source for
- 2:29:38Speaker 4: the best youth football coverage.
- 2:29:40Speaker 1: Here's O.C.
- 2:29:41Speaker 4: From the Murdoch Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:29:48Speaker 2: The Utah State Fair is at the Fair Park September
- 2:29:51Speaker 2: 10th through the 20th. I've got four passes for whoever
- 2:29:55Speaker 2: can answer this question. 877-353-0700 is the number. I set
- 2:30:01Speaker 2: the over-under for Utah's sacks surrendered this year at 19.5. So,
- 2:30:08Speaker 2: at Real OC Sports, tell me if you think they're
- 2:30:11Speaker 2: going to hit the over or the under on how
- 2:30:12Speaker 2: many sacks they give up. How many sacks did Utah's
- 2:30:15Speaker 2: offense give up last year? In the 2025 season, how
- 2:30:19Speaker 2: many sacks did Utah surrender on offense? 877-353-0700 for a
- 2:30:25Speaker 2: family four-pack to the Utah State Fair coming up September
- 2:30:29Speaker 2: 10th through the 20th at the Fair Park. Final segment
- 2:30:33Speaker 2: of the show brought to you by our friends at
- 2:30:34Speaker 2: Advanced Window Products, 801-850-9100. For $ 2, 500 off 10 windows or more,
- 2:30:40Speaker 2: tell them OC sent you or that you heard about
- 2:30:43Speaker 2: it on ESPN 700 and The Drive with Spence Checketts.
- 2:30:46Speaker 2: That is next. Hi, Spence.
- 2:30:48Speaker 1: That's an excellent question.
- 2:30:50Speaker 8: We were talking about this yesterday as far as because
- 2:30:53Speaker 8: the D-line, 34 sacks last year, second in the conference
- 2:30:57Speaker 8: to Texas Tech. With how good that O-line was last year,
- 2:31:02Speaker 8: I'm going to say more than 10.
- 2:31:04Speaker 2: It was more than 10.
- 2:31:05Speaker 1: I'm going to say less than 20.
- 2:31:07Speaker 2: It was less than 20.
- 2:31:08Speaker 1: I'm going to say 15. It was 14.
- 2:31:10Speaker 6: 14. Okay.
- 2:31:11Speaker 2: 14 sacks surrendered last year. It's a hell of a year.
- 2:31:14Speaker 2: It was a great year.
- 2:31:15Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:31:16Speaker 2: It was not top in the conference. Cincinnati gave up
- 2:31:21Speaker 2: eight sacks last year. And that was just as much
- 2:31:25Speaker 2: about Brendan Sorsby as it was about their offensive line.
- 2:31:29Speaker 1: What's that guy up to these days? quiet offseason for him.
- 2:31:33Speaker 2: Kansas state only gave up 13 sacks last year utah
- 2:31:37Speaker 2: gave up 14 byu gave up 16 if i said
- 2:31:41Speaker 2: the over under for this year spence is 19 and
- 2:31:43Speaker 2: a half you have a healthier devin dampier his escapability
- 2:31:47Speaker 2: is legendary when he's healthy yes it is you don't
- 2:31:51Speaker 2: have two projected first round picks starting at your offensive
- 2:31:54Speaker 2: tackle and in fact you are as you know replacing
- 2:31:57Speaker 2: all five on the starting offensive line. Although your center
- 2:32:00Speaker 2: was just named a team captain. Good news. 19 and
- 2:32:03Speaker 2: a half would put you top five. If you hit
- 2:32:07Speaker 2: the under you're tied for the top five in the
- 2:32:09Speaker 2: conference last year. If you go over that, you're a
- 2:32:12Speaker 2: little bit further down your top 25 ish nationally with
- 2:32:17Speaker 2: 19 or fewer, you go 20 or above you're outside
- 2:32:20Speaker 2: of that range.
- 2:32:22Speaker 6: I'm going over.
- 2:32:24Speaker 1: I'm going over.
- 2:32:27Speaker 6: I hope it's under.
- 2:32:29Speaker 1: Just like I think eight wins would be wonderful.
- 2:32:31Speaker 8: I hope it's 12 or 13 or 14. Let's get weird.
- 2:32:38Speaker 8: I just, I continue to be more curious than confident.
- 2:32:41Speaker 8: I honestly don't know. I, I feel like if you're
- 2:32:43Speaker 8: one of the people that is talking about this new
- 2:32:47Speaker 8: O line and new D line is if we're not
- 2:32:49Speaker 8: going to skip a bead, you may have forgotten what
- 2:32:52Speaker 8: last year was. You may have forgotten just how, I mean, look,
- 2:32:57Speaker 8: Devin's awesome. Way Sean's awesome. The skill position players, Hunter Andrews.
- 2:33:02Speaker 1: You know, Brandon Pagan.
- 2:33:04Speaker 8: And, you know, last year, a lot to like about
- 2:33:07Speaker 8: a lot of different pieces, but without the offense and
- 2:33:09Speaker 8: defensive line, and this is a program dating back to
- 2:33:12Speaker 8: Ron McBride that wants to build through the trenches without
- 2:33:16Speaker 8: the fronts on both sides. Last year, both sides last year,
- 2:33:18Speaker 8: this is a seven, eight win team and they won
- 2:33:21Speaker 8: 11 games. Let's remember they were 11 and two last year.
- 2:33:23Speaker 8: That's an unbelievable season.
- 2:33:26Speaker 1: I'm hopeful. I'm optimistic.
- 2:33:27Speaker 8: But until I have some data at my disposal and
- 2:33:31Speaker 8: not Idaho, I don't really know what to expect. Did
- 2:33:35Speaker 8: you give an opinion yourself over under?
- 2:33:39Speaker 2: I think that you're slightly under because of Devin.
- 2:33:43Speaker 6: Okay.
- 2:33:44Speaker 2: Because if he's healthy, I mean, he played behind a
- 2:33:48Speaker 2: pretty bad offensive line at New Mexico and he got
- 2:33:52Speaker 2: sacked four times. They gave up five total. four were
- 2:33:56Speaker 2: Devin Dampier.
- 2:33:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:33:59Speaker 2: They had one good offensive lineman. Now the competition was different, right?
- 2:34:04Speaker 2: I think Dev and his escapability was heavily compromised last year.
- 2:34:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:34:10Speaker 2: And we didn't really get a full appreciation of that
- 2:34:12Speaker 2: until all the way into the postseason, even though we
- 2:34:14Speaker 2: could see something was not right. Yeah. It's like double
- 2:34:18Speaker 2: hernia surgery as soon as the season ends. And, you know,
- 2:34:23Speaker 2: stay off your feet and heal that ankle for a month.
- 2:34:26Speaker 2: We didn't really get a full I didn't get a
- 2:34:28Speaker 2: full appreciation until it was all over of how really
- 2:34:32Speaker 2: compromised he was. if he stays healthy and he's as
- 2:34:35Speaker 2: healthy as he was even at New Mexico, he takes
- 2:34:39Speaker 2: off like a half dozen sacks by himself.
- 2:34:41Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:34:42Speaker 2: So because of that, I think you can stay. I
- 2:34:45Speaker 2: don't think it's going to be 10. Like it was
- 2:34:47Speaker 2: a couple of years ago. I think it's going to
- 2:34:49Speaker 2: be probably in that 15 to 19 range.
- 2:34:52Speaker 8: Well, he, he told us when he sat down with
- 2:34:55Speaker 8: you and I had packed 12 or excuse me, big 12.
- 2:34:58Speaker 6: I still miss the pack.
- 2:34:59Speaker 8: We all do at big 12 media media days sponsored
- 2:35:01Speaker 8: by monster energy. He told us for the first time,
- 2:35:04Speaker 8: at least for me, it was like when Cameron Rising
- 2:35:08Speaker 8: went out with Bill, you know, when all the noise
- 2:35:11Speaker 8: was going on. And in the moment, the way that
- 2:35:15Speaker 8: the program decided to handle his injury, I felt put
- 2:35:18Speaker 8: Cameron in a really bad spot. So he decided to
- 2:35:21Speaker 8: book an interview with Bill. And for the first time,
- 2:35:23Speaker 8: I was like, you guys don't get it. Like, my
- 2:35:25Speaker 8: knee was completely rebuilt completely. And I don't know that
- 2:35:31Speaker 8: I fully understood how unhealthy Devin was last year until
- 2:35:34Speaker 8: he told you.
- 2:35:34Speaker 1: And I had packed it again.
- 2:35:36Speaker 2: I did it again.
- 2:35:36Speaker 1: Big 12 media day sponsored by monster energy.
- 2:35:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:35:39Speaker 6: It's.
- 2:35:39Speaker 2: And that's why. I mean, last year I set the
- 2:35:43Speaker 2: over under at nine and a half, not 19 and
- 2:35:45Speaker 2: a half, nine and a half. Cause he was coming
- 2:35:47Speaker 2: off of five sack season, a four sack season for him.
- 2:35:52Speaker 2: And he didn't have nearly the offensive line.
- 2:35:54Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:35:54Speaker 2: So I looked at it last year. I said, This
- 2:35:57Speaker 2: guy behind this offensive line is not going to get
- 2:36:00Speaker 2: sacked double digits. It's not going to happen. Now, he
- 2:36:04Speaker 2: wasn't healthy. The offensive line went up against, you know,
- 2:36:09Speaker 2: Texas Tech. So there were some issues. But I think that.
- 2:36:14Speaker 2: you can keep it. That's why I said at 19
- 2:36:15Speaker 2: and a half over that, I think we're going, I
- 2:36:17Speaker 2: think we're going, ah, man, some missed opportunities there under
- 2:36:20Speaker 2: that you're in the top 25 range. And that is
- 2:36:24Speaker 2: a wonderful season in Morgan's first year.
- 2:36:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:36:26Speaker 1: It's a good line. And then the other dynamic, I
- 2:36:29Speaker 1: need to see this offense.
- 2:36:31Speaker 8: I know the walking line is Kevin believes in the
- 2:36:33Speaker 8: same concepts Jason did, and they're going to cater the
- 2:36:36Speaker 8: offense to the skill position. Like, but then there are
- 2:36:39Speaker 8: some people that believe that, Like, Gordon Monson is going
- 2:36:42Speaker 8: to be on the show today. I always called Witt, like,
- 2:36:44Speaker 8: the dark overlord because he wanted the offense just three
- 2:36:47Speaker 8: yards cloud of dust.
- 2:36:48Speaker 1: We're running the football.
- 2:36:50Speaker 8: And there are some people who believe that Morgan has
- 2:36:52Speaker 8: concepts in his head that he wants Kevin to throw
- 2:36:54Speaker 8: the ball more. And if Devin is dropping back a
- 2:36:57Speaker 8: lot more than he did a year ago, will the
- 2:36:59Speaker 8: sack number go up?
- 2:37:00Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 2:37:01Speaker 2: Do you want to know what Utah State's sack number
- 2:37:03Speaker 2: was last year? Sure. Do you want to take a guess?
- 2:37:08Speaker 1: The way you're asking the question, Bryson Barnes. They threw
- 2:37:13Speaker 1: it more.
- 2:37:15Speaker 2: Over 20, 42, 42 last of the Mount West conference.
- 2:37:20Speaker 6: Oh, geez.
- 2:37:21Speaker 2: Well, they, Bryson Barnes was the third most sacked for it.
- 2:37:25Speaker 2: The fourth most sack quarterback in all of division one
- 2:37:27Speaker 2: football last year.
- 2:37:28Speaker 6: I'll take the over.
- 2:37:31Speaker 2: That Spence check. It's host of the drive. Stay tuned
- 2:37:34Speaker 2: and listen to him for the next four hours. Thanks
- 2:37:36Speaker 2: for listening to the Sean O'Connell show. We'll do it
- 2:37:38Speaker 2: again tomorrow on ESPN, 700 and 92 on FM.
