Transcript
- 0:16Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily a body here. You are listening to
- 0:20Speaker 1: another installment of five Minute Friday from Hurdle. Hello. Hi,
- 0:24Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, I am a sleepy I'm a sleepy human.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Oh my god. The week has been hectic. I went
- 0:32Speaker 1: from Paris on Monday. I had about a twenty four
- 0:35Speaker 1: hour turnaround before coming the other direction to Portland, Oregon.
- 0:42Speaker 1: I'm currently sitting at the Nike headquarters in Beaverton. Been
- 0:49Speaker 1: working on a really big project that I get to
- 0:50Speaker 1: tell you about very soon here. But in the meantime,
- 0:54Speaker 1: it feels so special to be surrounded by so many
- 0:59Speaker 1: outstas ending humans here. And what I mean by that
- 1:02Speaker 1: is that there are a lot of really cool athletes
- 1:05Speaker 1: in town. Because this weekend here in Oregon is the
- 1:09Speaker 1: pre Classic. It is the only Diamond League meet that
- 1:13Speaker 1: happens in the US. And I had the opportunity to
- 1:18Speaker 1: sit down with Messi Russell, friend of the podcast, yesterday
- 1:22Speaker 1: she will be back on the show next week a
- 1:24Speaker 1: little spoiler alert. And then also had a special meeting
- 1:30Speaker 1: with a very special person. I don't mean to be
- 1:33Speaker 1: cagey about this, I can't. I just can't tell you yet.
- 1:35Speaker 1: But had a special meeting with a special person. I
- 1:39Speaker 1: am inspired for all of eternity now, and it really
- 1:44Speaker 1: was the driving factor that got me to find a
- 1:47Speaker 1: track myself.
- 1:48Speaker 2: This morning.
- 1:49Speaker 1: I for a while thought about going to do my
- 1:53Speaker 1: morning workout that I needed to clock quite early at
- 1:58Speaker 1: the gym on a treadmill, and then I wasn't really
- 2:00Speaker 1: feeling inspired by that, so did a little Google search,
- 2:03Speaker 1: found myself a track, read the reviews. It did seem
- 2:07Speaker 1: that it would be open when I arrived, and to
- 2:10Speaker 1: my luck and excitement, it was.
- 2:12Speaker 2: And man, talk about the battle of me versus me.
- 2:16Speaker 1: I haven't gone to a track and done interval work
- 2:19Speaker 1: in a really long time. I used to be part
- 2:22Speaker 1: of a track club in New York called Brooklyn Track Club,
- 2:25Speaker 1: and so I would go to the track quite often,
- 2:27Speaker 1: and there were times during that period where I was
- 2:32Speaker 1: really excelling at track work. Where I live now in Brooklyn,
- 2:36Speaker 1: getting to the track is a little bit of a hassle,
- 2:39Speaker 1: and so I find that I'm not going there as often.
- 2:42Speaker 1: When I'm doing interval work. I'm literally doing it on
- 2:46Speaker 1: the roads. And so to go to a track right now,
- 2:49Speaker 1: I just have this story that I've been telling myself
- 2:53Speaker 1: that I'm not going to be as good as I
- 2:55Speaker 1: used to be there.
- 2:56Speaker 2: And when I.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Arrived there this morning, I promised myself that I wouldn't
- 3:02Speaker 1: read into that. I promised myself that I would allow
- 3:05Speaker 1: myself to have a little bit of grace as I.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Went about the prescribed workout.
- 3:11Speaker 1: And so what happens, more often than not when we
- 3:14Speaker 1: are challenged by something, when we are intimidated by something,
- 3:17Speaker 1: is that the best thing that you can do for
- 3:19Speaker 1: yourself is start.
- 3:21Speaker 2: And so I did just that. I ran the warm
- 3:24Speaker 2: up to get to the track.
- 3:26Speaker 1: I got there and I had four eight hundred meter
- 3:29Speaker 1: repeats on deck with ninety seconds of walking rest in
- 3:33Speaker 1: between each, And after the first one, my confidence grew
- 3:37Speaker 1: a little bit, and the second one felt really hard,
- 3:41Speaker 1: and then the third one, I said, you're more than
- 3:43Speaker 1: halfway there, And by number four, I reminded myself, this
- 3:48Speaker 1: is something that I get to do. I have a
- 3:51Speaker 1: good friend right now that's struggling with planter fasciitis, and
- 3:54Speaker 1: it's a place that I had been not all that
- 3:57Speaker 1: long ago.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Myself.
- 3:59Speaker 1: I remember how f USh was when I would have
- 4:01Speaker 1: done anything to show up and do an interval workout,
- 4:05Speaker 1: and having just been with her and hearing her struggles.
- 4:09Speaker 2: And remembering my own.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I went into that fourth rep today and I thought,
- 4:15Speaker 1: I get to do this. It might not always go
- 4:18Speaker 1: exactly as I hoped, it might not always feel easy.
- 4:22Speaker 2: In fact, most often it does not.
- 4:25Speaker 1: But with that said, today was one of those days
- 4:28Speaker 1: that I got to remind myself.
- 4:30Speaker 2: How cool is it that I get to try?
- 4:32Speaker 1: How cool is it that I get to do this
- 4:35Speaker 1: thing that reminds me that I am capable and confident
- 4:38Speaker 1: and good exactly as I am. And so my listener
- 4:45Speaker 1: prompt for you this week, my thought for you this week?
- 4:47Speaker 1: What is a story that you're telling yourself right now
- 4:50Speaker 1: that isn't very productive? And how can you show up
- 4:54Speaker 1: and start anyway? And now a listener question. Hey, I
- 4:59Speaker 1: know you're a busy lady, but question for you. I'm
- 5:02Speaker 1: traveling to Ireland soon and would love to get in
- 5:04Speaker 1: some runs in outdoors, but I'm hesitant to do this
- 5:07Speaker 1: in a new place, foreign country. What are some of
- 5:09Speaker 1: your tips for running in an unfamiliar area solo outdoors?
- 5:13Speaker 1: Thanks so much, Becca, Hey beca a great question. So
- 5:16Speaker 1: when it comes to traveling, there is a roots feature
- 5:20Speaker 1: on Strava that is my BFF. What you can do
- 5:23Speaker 1: in the app is you click maps and you can
- 5:25Speaker 1: put in exactly how much distance you're looking to cover,
- 5:29Speaker 1: and it will generate maps based on the most popular
- 5:32Speaker 1: running routs, So when you click into the running route,
- 5:34Speaker 1: you can even see how popular it is at the
- 5:37Speaker 1: time of day that you are seeking to get out there.
- 5:40Speaker 1: When it comes to safety, once I find my root,
- 5:43Speaker 1: I'm also being very aware, let's call it on what
- 5:48Speaker 1: time I'm trying to get this done. I am not
- 5:50Speaker 1: someone that's going to hop outside before six thirty am
- 5:53Speaker 1: if it's not a safe place to do that. So
- 5:56Speaker 1: whether that is doing some research online, you can find
- 5:59Speaker 1: a lot of really great feedback on running and particular
- 6:03Speaker 1: areas on Reddit. But I will always make sure that
- 6:06Speaker 1: it's light in a place that I'm not super familiar with.
- 6:09Speaker 1: I'll be wearing either headphones that are on transparency mode
- 6:12Speaker 1: or no headphone at all, and constantly sharing my location. Now,
- 6:17Speaker 1: when you're in an international city at a faraway destination,
- 6:22Speaker 1: that might not feel like something that is as important,
- 6:25Speaker 1: but trust me, it will give you peace of mind
- 6:28Speaker 1: and the people that love you peace of mind to
- 6:29Speaker 1: be able to keep tabs on you when you're going
- 6:32Speaker 1: out and doing something that helps you feel like your
- 6:34Speaker 1: best self. But yeah, my roots on Strava is the
- 6:37Speaker 1: biggest tip on figuring out where to run. Sharing your
- 6:40Speaker 1: location also super important, making sure you're going out when
- 6:43Speaker 1: it's light out, and also having a few points of
- 6:45Speaker 1: reference along your route if you can so knowing, Okay,
- 6:49Speaker 1: I know a mile and a half in there's going
- 6:51Speaker 1: to be this seven eleven and if I'm thirsty or
- 6:53Speaker 1: need something, I can go in there, right. I also
- 6:56Speaker 1: am cognizant. You can see on Strava and often on
- 6:59Speaker 1: Google Man where there are water fountains, so if you're
- 7:02Speaker 1: planning something like a long run, that is something to
- 7:05Speaker 1: really keep in mind to make sure that you're taking
- 7:07Speaker 1: care of yourself and your body along your way. One
- 7:10Speaker 1: other thing, if you are like me and you're looking
- 7:12Speaker 1: for a track, you can usually see when you find
- 7:14Speaker 1: one on Google or Apple Maps what the hours of
- 7:17Speaker 1: the track are, so make sure that you check that
- 7:19Speaker 1: before just showing up, because you could be finding something
- 7:22Speaker 1: that's not open when you're seeking to get in. I
- 7:25Speaker 1: hope this is helpful. Again, Always here to answer your
- 7:28Speaker 1: listener questions. Feel free to shoot me a note over
- 7:30Speaker 1: on social it's over at Emilybody and at Hurdle Podcast,
