- 1:20Speaker 1: And on Twitter at ChipBrown247. He's been a longtime friend
- 1:23Speaker 1: of ours. And we always love talking football with him.
- 1:25Speaker 1: What is up, Chip? How you doing, buddy?
- 1:27Speaker 2: What's going on, fellas?
- 1:29Speaker 1: Not a whole lot. Big week. Yeah, big week. Biggest
- 1:32Speaker 1: week in Texas football since when? Let me ask it
- 1:35Speaker 1: this way. Biggest Texas home game. Biggest game in Austin
- 1:38Speaker 1: since when?
- 1:38Speaker 3: Alabama. Well, it's probably the biggest non-conference home game since
- 1:45Speaker 3: Ohio State in 06.
- 1:47Speaker 2: But Alabama, Georgia coming in here in.
- 1:52Speaker 3: The last few years, those were pretty anticipated as well.
- 1:58Speaker 4: So where are we on the expectation for this team?
- 2:02Speaker 4: I would assume it's, I, is it the only team
- 2:06Speaker 4: in the sec where it is national championship or bust?
- 2:10Speaker 2: I'd say national championship game or bus. Okay.
- 2:14Speaker 1: That's close.
- 2:16Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:16Speaker 3: That's real close. Cause they've been to the semifinals twice.
- 2:20Speaker 3: And so this is the most talented roster. Steve Sarkeesian
- 2:24Speaker 3: has had, um, you know, they may not be as
- 2:27Speaker 3: strong in a couple of positions, but across the board,
- 2:31Speaker 3: this is as talented a roster as they've had, certainly
- 2:35Speaker 3: on offense, you know, but they've got to, they still
- 2:40Speaker 3: couldn't run the ball up the middle against Texas state.
- 2:47Speaker 3: And I thought they would be better in that area.
- 2:50Speaker 3: It was 102, Sark said it was 160 degrees on
- 2:54Speaker 3: the field with.
- 2:55Speaker 2: The rubber pellets, but they gotta be better. They gotta
- 3:00Speaker 2: be better.
- 3:01Speaker 3: I thought Ohio state struggled to run the ball at times.
- 3:04Speaker 3: They had six explosive runs for what? 173 yards. Ohio
- 3:10Speaker 3: state did the other 29 carries went for 64 yards,
- 3:13Speaker 3: which is 2.2 yards per carry. So These teams may
- 3:21Speaker 3: be mirror images of each other. And, you know, it's
- 3:25Speaker 3: going to be interesting to see how Will Muschamp impacts
- 3:28Speaker 3: this game because the previous defensive coordinator, Pete Kwiatkowski, was
- 3:33Speaker 3: really good against Ohio State. You know, Ohio State averaged
- 3:38Speaker 3: just 79 yards rushing, three yards per carry, 17 and
- 3:43Speaker 3: a half points. And Jeremiah Smith, seven catches for 46
- 3:48Speaker 3: yards in two games.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Against Texas.
- 3:52Speaker 3: So, you know, Steve Sarkeesian made a big, bold move
- 3:56Speaker 3: going to get Will Muschamp.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Let's see how he defends the Buckeyes.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Yeah, very confusing history with Will Muschamp defensively. He can
- 4:05Speaker 1: confuse young quarterbacks. Sayan's got a lot of seed time,
- 4:08Speaker 1: but I love Muschamp and what he'll be able to
- 4:10Speaker 1: throw out there. Listen, not getting lost in the stats,
- 4:14Speaker 1: but I actually love the way Hollywood Smothers looked in
- 4:17Speaker 1: his debut. Tell me what you thought of him Everybody's
- 4:20Speaker 1: talking about that receiving core, and when it's 59-7, you've
- 4:24Speaker 1: got to let Arch sling it around a little bit.
- 4:25Speaker 1: But I thought Smothers is going to be, you're worried
- 4:29Speaker 1: about Arch, you're worried about the receivers. Oh, here's a
- 4:31Speaker 1: little guy that can run it and catch it.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Yeah, Smothers is electric. He's got another gear.
- 4:38Speaker 3: When he sees that crease, there's a turbo boost, a
- 4:42Speaker 3: bullet speed to him. And great hands. I mean, had
- 4:46Speaker 3: a one-handed catch out of the backfield that was like, whoa, okay.
- 4:51Speaker 2: So, yeah, I think Hollywood Smothers is going to be
- 4:53Speaker 2: a big deal. And they ran, you know, Sarkeesian loves
- 4:57Speaker 2: to run outside.
- 4:59Speaker 3: He loves the outside zone. He loves to run outside.
- 5:02Speaker 3: And they ran Smothers outside on the first play. He
- 5:06Speaker 3: picked up 45 yards. And then they just ran it
- 5:10Speaker 3: inside the rest of the game, like to prove a point.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Um, didn't go well, but.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Yeah, Smothers is, he's an, he's a weapon they did
- 5:20Speaker 3: not have a year ago.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Chip Brown is with us. 247horns247. com, add Chip Brown 247
- 5:26Speaker 1: on Twitter. This in my head even sounds like a
- 5:31Speaker 1: dumb question as I'm about to ask it. So I
- 5:33Speaker 1: hope you're kind to me, Chip, if it's a dumb question.
- 5:36Speaker 1: But Arthur Smith hasn't called a lot of plays on
- 5:38Speaker 1: the college level, like one game. All his work has
- 5:41Speaker 1: been in the NFL. So I'm curious if Will Muschamp
- 5:44Speaker 1: has even hinted at this or if you know from
- 5:46Speaker 1: your sources, I mean, how much NFL tape has he
- 5:49Speaker 1: had to watch just to try to find tendencies in
- 5:52Speaker 1: Arthur Smith that you wouldn't necessarily pick up in just
- 5:55Speaker 1: one game film of a college game? Yeah, a lot,
- 5:59Speaker 1: a lot.
- 6:00Speaker 3: You know, the book on Arthur Smith is he wants
- 6:03Speaker 3: to run the ball, play action. And, you know, they've
- 6:08Speaker 3: got a new cast of, running backs. I mean, Bo Jackson, um,
- 6:13Speaker 3: you know, legend Bay, this guy, the freshman, he looks like,
- 6:18Speaker 3: he looks like trouble.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Um, but you know, Texas recruited the heck out of
- 6:24Speaker 2: that guy. Um, so yeah, it's going to be fun.
- 6:27Speaker 3: Their offensive line looks a little, I think there's some,
- 6:31Speaker 3: there's some little holes in that offensive line. I think
- 6:34Speaker 3: the right tackle Phillip Daniels, he didn't look, he didn't
- 6:38Speaker 3: look great last week. Um, You know, I'd have Colin
- 6:42Speaker 3: Simmons spending a lot of quality time with him. And yeah,
- 6:47Speaker 3: I'm real intrigued because I, listen, as a Lions fan,
- 6:50Speaker 3: I was like Matt Patricia, whatever. And Matt Patricia handed
- 6:56Speaker 3: it to Steve Sarkeesian last year. So I'm not overly
- 7:01Speaker 3: impressed with Arthur Smith, but I'm sure he'll do something
- 7:06Speaker 3: to prove me wrong here.
- 7:08Speaker 4: How much more exciting is November 14th, Texas at LSU,
- 7:13Speaker 4: after watching LSU this past weekend?
- 7:16Speaker 2: Well, I have Texas going 11-1, and that's the loss
- 7:21Speaker 2: I have in Baton Rouge. I thought LSU would start
- 7:25Speaker 2: slow and build.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Good God.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Forget that. They came out with a flamethrower. So, yeah,
- 7:34Speaker 2: that's going to be exciting. that's going to be an
- 7:36Speaker 2: incredible night there in Baton Rouge.
- 7:38Speaker 3: And, you know, it's funny, the sec is clearly sending
- 7:43Speaker 3: a message to lame Kiffin and LSU when you're trying
- 7:47Speaker 3: to make sure you can expel them from the conference.
- 7:50Speaker 3: And I think that has ended up affecting Texas too,
- 7:54Speaker 3: because they had a kid Cole Hudson who went undrafted.
- 7:58Speaker 3: He went to a couple of rookie camps where, you know,
- 8:01Speaker 3: he never signed a contract and he is a grad
- 8:04Speaker 3: student and, right now in the McComb school of business.
- 8:07Speaker 3: And Steve Sarkeesian came out and said, he's ineligible, um, until,
- 8:14Speaker 3: you know, he gets some things clarified with the NCAA and,
- 8:19Speaker 3: and then Sarkeesian said, and then we'll check with the sec.
- 8:24Speaker 3: And I think that Texas is gun shy now about
- 8:28Speaker 3: playing Cole Hudson because, you know, he's on the fringe
- 8:32Speaker 3: of that, uh, pro you know pro players coming back
- 8:36Speaker 3: to college and and so um you know they could
- 8:40Speaker 3: probably use a guy who has 1959 snaps in college football.
- 8:45Speaker 4: I i don't think any of us believed that lsu
- 8:48Speaker 4: was ever going to get expelled from the sec but
- 8:50Speaker 4: we also kind of talked about yesterday chip if they
- 8:53Speaker 4: did you know would they become an independent would they
- 8:55Speaker 4: go to the big 12 and then we talked about
- 8:57Speaker 4: other teams outside of notre dame that possibly could have
- 8:59Speaker 4: become independents was there ever a conversation Because you were
- 9:03Speaker 4: so close to the power brokers at Texas, especially over
- 9:08Speaker 4: the last 20 years, of Texas ever becoming an independent
- 9:11Speaker 4: before they went to the SEC.
- 9:14Speaker 3: No. That was not the mindset of the powers that be.
- 9:21Speaker 3: DeLoss Dodds, the 32-year athletic director, never seriously entertained that
- 9:28Speaker 3: or took it up to the president, Bill Powers.
- 9:30Speaker 2: And then same– for you.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Know, Texas, their big priority was sticking with OU, you
- 9:39Speaker 3: know that they, they wanted that rivalry to continue the
- 9:43Speaker 3: special game at the cotton bowl. And so, you know,
- 9:47Speaker 3: they worked very closely with OU and, and of course
- 9:50Speaker 3: the SEC said, yeah, we'll take you. And, and so
- 9:54Speaker 3: that was the you know, that's how it played out. Yeah.
- 9:57Speaker 1: That's what somebody texted me. We discussed that on the
- 9:59Speaker 1: show yesterday. and somebody said there was a better chance
- 10:01Speaker 1: of texas leaving the united states and forming its own
- 10:04Speaker 1: country than it was for them to go independent in
- 10:07Speaker 1: sports uh can you make a case that texas needs
- 10:11Speaker 1: this game this win over ohio state more than ohio
- 10:13Speaker 1: state needs it over texas is there more pressure on
- 10:16Speaker 1: texas to win this game Yeah.
- 10:19Speaker 3: I mean, I think there's pressure on Steve Sarkeesian because
- 10:22Speaker 3: it's his offense that had goal to go in two
- 10:26Speaker 3: straight games against Ohio State and came away with no points,
- 10:30Speaker 3: including first and goal from the one with just under
- 10:34Speaker 3: four minutes left in that 2024 college football playoff with
- 10:38Speaker 3: a chance to tie or take the lead. And it
- 10:41Speaker 3: ends up going backwards and then turning into a strip
- 10:44Speaker 3: sack that Ohio.
- 10:45Speaker 2: State takes 83 yards for a touchdown.
- 10:48Speaker 3: And then last year they have first, you know, goal
- 10:51Speaker 3: to go from the not first and goal from the nine.
- 10:53Speaker 3: They end up with fourth and goal from the one.
- 10:56Speaker 3: They try to rush a quarterback sneak and arch gets
- 11:00Speaker 3: blown up. And that was at the beginning of the
- 11:02Speaker 3: third quarter when Texas needed some juice. And, and those are,
- 11:09Speaker 3: you know, Steve Sarkeesian, I asked him about those sequences
- 11:13Speaker 3: and he said, if you look at them, it's probably
- 11:15Speaker 3: the reason we lost both games. So, I think Steve
- 11:19Speaker 3: Sarkeesian needs to show he can get this offense into
- 11:24Speaker 3: the end zone when it appears it's not a layup,
- 11:28Speaker 3: but when you have goal to go. Now look, not
- 11:33Speaker 3: having Caleb Downs on the field is going to help.
- 11:37Speaker 3: That guy's unbelievable. Same with Arvel Reese. I know Riley
- 11:43Speaker 3: Pettijohn is a really good linebacker.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Texas recruited the heck out of him. I'm just not sure.
- 11:50Speaker 2: you know, if they have the playmakers that they had
- 11:51Speaker 2: a year ago.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Before you go, we ask the tough questions here. So
- 11:57Speaker 1: your beautiful young daughter been a freshman in college for
- 11:59Speaker 1: just a couple of weeks. Her first football game is
- 12:01Speaker 1: a memorable one. Was she among those that stormed the
- 12:05Speaker 1: field at Michigan?
- 12:06Speaker 3: She was not storming the field. She said the brick
- 12:10Speaker 3: wall was too high. I said, spoken like a true
- 12:15Speaker 3: music composition.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Major did not want to climb the wall uh.
- 12:21Speaker 3: She she's been texting me all week saying we're getting
- 12:24Speaker 3: grilled over this like this is embarrassing i'm like don't
- 12:27Speaker 3: worry about it they'll they'll move on to some other
- 12:29Speaker 3: subject in a week or two.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Yeah that's right maybe even uh maybe even saturday a
- 12:34Speaker 1: lot of people think oklahoma goes up there and works
- 12:36Speaker 1: michigan so we'll we'll see if that happens yeah she'll
- 12:39Speaker 1: be there okay good so wait so with her With
- 12:42Speaker 1: her Texas background and now at Michigan, the first supposedly
- 12:47Speaker 1: meaningful home game she gets is Oklahoma. That's ironic. She's
- 12:51Speaker 1: probably hated Oklahoma for a long time.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. She's getting indoctrinated, for sure.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Very quickly. Chip, enjoy the game this weekend. I know
- 13:01Speaker 1: it'll be a fun one when Ohio State comes to town.
- 13:03Speaker 1: We always appreciate the time.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Hey, Lance, who you got?
- 13:07Speaker 4: I'm still working. That's a tough game. Really, really tough game.
- 13:10Speaker 4: I was on the right side last year with Ohio State,
- 13:12Speaker 4: but I don't know. I said in the offseason that
- 13:15Speaker 4: Texas would win the game, but I'm not sure. Tough game, Joe.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Tough game. I think they win by 10.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:21Speaker 4: Okay.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Texas by 10. And Brown and I are not offended
- 13:24Speaker 1: you didn't ask us. I understand. I wouldn't ask me either.
- 13:27Speaker 1: I agree with you. I like Texas as well. We
- 13:29Speaker 1: do an upset alert every Tuesday, Chip. My upset alert
- 13:32Speaker 1: last week was Clemson upsetting LSU. Hey, you know, week one.
- 13:38Speaker 2: We're all learning.
- 13:38Speaker 1: That's right.
- 13:39Speaker 4: Week one.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Who knows? Week one. Dudley had Tulsa, though, to his credit.
- 13:43Speaker 1: Tulsa over Oak State. How about that? Thank you. Thank you.
- 13:47Speaker 1: And I like Texas by 10 as well. So we're
- 13:50Speaker 1: right on. Hook them. Thank you, Chip. Good to see you, buddy.
- 13:53Speaker 2: See you guys.
- 13:54Speaker 3: All right.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Chip Brown with us. Horns247. com. At ChipBrown247 on social media.
- 13:58Speaker 1: I don't even know if I do that right. Is
- 14:00Speaker 1: that all you do to hook them?
- 14:01Speaker 4: I always thought it was just that.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Do you stick the thumb out? Maybe.
- 14:04Speaker 5: Do you?
- 14:05Speaker 1: For those? That's I love you. Yeah, I guess.
- 14:08Speaker 4: Maybe.
- 14:08Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Or do you tuck it in like that? You don't
- 14:11Speaker 1: tuck it in. That's too close to... I know you
- 14:15Speaker 1: just do this. 15-yard penalty if you horn down.
- 14:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 14:19Speaker 1: I don't know. I feel like I'm at a concert, though,
- 14:21Speaker 1: when I'm doing that. I grew up in that age.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Rock on.
- 14:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:26Speaker 1: You can't do that to Taylor Swift.
- 14:29Speaker 4: Olivia Rodrigo.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Let's go. Let's go. All right. So that's a big game.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Back to the questions I was asking coming out of
- 14:38Speaker 1: week one. Worst team that you saw in week one?
- 14:43Speaker 4: The Clemson I mean really I mean if you want
- 14:46Speaker 4: to go away from that I mean that's kind of
- 14:48Speaker 4: obvious though right like they did nothing right.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Um not I guess there was not a lot expected
- 14:54Speaker 1: of Oklahoma State but that was a terrible performance and
- 14:57Speaker 1: I also wrote down Rutgers but I figured y'all were
- 14:59Speaker 1: gonna say Rutgers so I went Oklahoma State I mean
- 15:03Speaker 1: you can't well worst teams an overstatement I I thought
- 15:08Speaker 1: Cal would be better than Cal was. I can't call
- 15:10Speaker 1: them worse team.
- 15:11Speaker 4: They were good in the first quarter and the third quarters.
- 15:13Speaker 4: They just couldn't finish the half or the game.
- 15:16Speaker 1: I know. That's a weird way of putting it, but
- 15:18Speaker 1: you're right. I just did not think Cal looked as
- 15:20Speaker 1: good as I thought they would. I thought UCLA was
- 15:22Speaker 1: going to be a little better. Maybe so. Maybe UCLA
- 15:24Speaker 1: is that much better. Contemporable. You're one under Bob Chesney.
- 15:27Speaker 4: But Sagapulatelli.
- 15:30Speaker 1: There you go.
- 15:30Speaker 4: He throws an unbelievable pass. I don't know if you
- 15:33Speaker 4: guys were watching. It was tied up in the fourth
- 15:36Speaker 4: quarter with about nine and a half to go. And
- 15:38Speaker 4: the receiver, his point of view got turned around. It
- 15:42Speaker 4: hit him in the hands, but it bounces off. And
- 15:44Speaker 4: then it's returned for like 30 yards and they score.
- 15:46Speaker 4: And that kind of like opened the floodgates. If he
- 15:48Speaker 4: catches that, I think he goes for six. And I
- 15:51Speaker 4: think the game flips.
- 15:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:52Speaker 1: So maybe I'm too critical on Cal. You're right. I
- 15:54Speaker 1: just do. I watched a lot of that game.
- 15:56Speaker 4: The moment looked really big for Taj.
- 15:58Speaker 2: It did.
- 15:58Speaker 1: It was a fun game, but it did look like
- 16:00Speaker 1: Bob Chesney had the better coach team. They did a
- 16:02Speaker 1: really good job of packing that stadium. It was a
- 16:04Speaker 1: fun atmosphere. It was. But a lot of UCLA fans there.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Did you notice when UCLA had a big play how
- 16:08Speaker 1: loud it was? I was surprised that many UCLA fans
- 16:11Speaker 1: were there. It's my honorable mention for best games of
- 16:15Speaker 1: the weekend. Give me the best game of the weekend.
- 16:17Speaker 1: It's got to be Ole Miss and Louisville.
- 16:18Speaker 4: Yeah, Ole Miss and Louisville.
- 16:19Speaker 1: It was Ole Miss and Louisville. I mean, if I
- 16:21Speaker 1: needed to go for a second one.
- 16:22Speaker 4: Well, I mean, just for the entertainment value, Oregon and Boise,
- 16:25Speaker 4: just because it was– you look up and you're like, damn,
- 16:28Speaker 4: they won't go away.
- 16:29Speaker 1: And I wrote that down, too, because, you know, you–
- 16:32Speaker 1: You watch that game and you think to yourself, God,
- 16:35Speaker 1: Oregon must not be that good. But I think you
- 16:37Speaker 1: have to take the other side of it, that Boise
- 16:40Speaker 1: State probably is that good. And we'll learn more this
- 16:42Speaker 1: week against Memphis. But I was really impressed with Boise
- 16:46Speaker 1: State and Western Michigan both. Neither one of those felt like,
- 16:49Speaker 1: It was a flukish thing that was happening. They both
- 16:52Speaker 1: looked like they were toe-for-toe with the team they were playing.
- 16:54Speaker 4: If I would have told you guys that Boise's going
- 16:56Speaker 4: into Alton and they're going to be minus three in turnovers,
- 16:58Speaker 4: what do you think that– 54 to 10, something like that.
- 17:02Speaker 4: I mean, I would have gotten everything possible because I
- 17:05Speaker 4: was already looking. I was like, damn, this 24.5 is
- 17:07Speaker 4: a big number. Oregon's going to come out, probably try
- 17:10Speaker 4: to make a statement out of this, ended up staying
- 17:13Speaker 4: away from the game. But to be minus three for
- 17:15Speaker 4: Oregon to have ten freaking penalties– And to be plus
- 17:19Speaker 4: three in turnovers and still barely win that game, I
- 17:21Speaker 4: don't know. I mean, I think Oregon's going to be
- 17:23Speaker 4: really good. And I do give Boise a lot of
- 17:25Speaker 4: credit because when they're minus three on the road in
- 17:27Speaker 4: that environment and they still play it within a possession,
- 17:29Speaker 4: that was impressive.
- 17:30Speaker 1: SMU-FSU was crazy fun.
- 17:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:33Speaker 1: I mean, it was a sloppy game, but you had
- 17:35Speaker 1: just a lot of craziness in there. I mean, and
- 17:38Speaker 1: LSU-Clemson was entertaining for a different reason. I mean, just
- 17:40Speaker 1: to see the atmosphere, and then just the beatdown. It
- 17:45Speaker 1: never made it back to my main after halftime. I
- 17:47Speaker 1: don't know about you guys. I couldn't take it off
- 17:50Speaker 1: because of the train wreck. I had it on the
- 17:52Speaker 1: side TV, but I was more dialed in on UCLA
- 17:56Speaker 1: and Clemson. Excuse me, UCLA and Cal.
- 17:59Speaker 4: Ole Miss and Louisville probably was the most entertaining game.
- 18:03Speaker 4: The other game that was kind of like, The JV
- 18:07Speaker 4: version was Auburn and Baylor. Aesthetically, it was a terrible
- 18:10Speaker 4: game to watch. And really watching those four teams, you
- 18:13Speaker 4: could see how different spots those teams are in right now.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Yeah, but I think we were so hungry for close
- 18:17Speaker 1: games in Week 1 that anything that was close was entertaining.
- 18:19Speaker 1: And that's why Western Michigan-Michigan was up there.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Great ending.
- 18:22Speaker 1: There was just a lot of tension in that game, though,
- 18:24Speaker 1: because you're like, God, Western Michigan's played so well, but
- 18:26Speaker 1: Michigan's going to break a play here and the game's over.
- 18:29Speaker 1: And just play after play after play, you thought that
- 18:31Speaker 1: was going to be the play, and they never, until
- 18:33Speaker 1: the very end, broke that one play. If I take...
- 18:35Speaker 1: Michigan off the table because by far they were the
- 18:39Speaker 1: most overrated team who else was overrated I want to
- 18:43Speaker 1: give you Houston here oh yeah they barely beat James
- 18:46Speaker 1: Shepard remember Alabama's wide receiver coach Jamarcus Shepard is the
- 18:50Speaker 1: uh is the head coach at Oregon State and you
- 18:53Speaker 1: know who Oregon State gets this week they get Texas
- 18:56Speaker 1: Tech at home well Texas Tech you could argue was
- 18:59Speaker 1: overrated I mean I hate to do that on a
- 19:01Speaker 1: game over Abilene but My anticipation was Texas Tech beats
- 19:06Speaker 1: Abilene something like Clemson got beat by LSU 52-10. And
- 19:12Speaker 1: it was 31-10.
- 19:13Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, you would think even their threes and
- 19:16Speaker 4: fours can do whatever they want on Abilene.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Is that game in Lubbock?
- 19:19Speaker 4: No, it's in Corvallis.
- 19:20Speaker 1: So Texas Tech goes to Corvallis, goes to Marcus Shepard
- 19:23Speaker 1: and Oregon State. You know how I always do two
- 19:25Speaker 1: or three when I'm doing my upset alert? Then I
- 19:27Speaker 1: probably narrow it down sometimes in what I can draw
- 19:29Speaker 1: and not. I can't draw that beaver at Oregon State.
- 19:32Speaker 1: I don't know if Oregon State can do it back-to-back week,
- 19:34Speaker 1: but Houston and Texas Tech play each other next week.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Primetime CBS is Texas Tech and Oregon State. That used
- 19:42Speaker 1: to be reserved for Alabama LSU and Florida Tennessee. It
- 19:46Speaker 1: could end up being a really good game. out there.
- 19:51Speaker 4: I mean, it doesn't matter. It's going against Ohio State, Texas.
- 19:53Speaker 1: My gosh, Mississippi State and Minnesota is the 230 CBS game.
- 19:57Speaker 1: I forgot about that. State was barely on CBS when
- 20:00Speaker 1: they had the SEC package. Now they're showing a play
- 20:03Speaker 1: at Minnesota. That has to be CBS Sports Network. You're
- 20:08Speaker 1: talking about Tech State, Oregon State?
- 20:09Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 20:10Speaker 1: You got it on CBS.
- 20:11Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't think it.
- 20:12Speaker 1: It's not CBS. You've got it both places. No, you don't. No,
- 20:16Speaker 1: you don't. He doesn't have it primetime. It's got to
- 20:17Speaker 1: be CBS Sports Network. You've got Southern Utah, Colorado State
- 20:20Speaker 1: on CBS Sports Network primetime. What's on NBC? Iowa State, Iowa.
- 20:26Speaker 4: Oh, it's CBS.
- 20:27Speaker 1: What what brooks yeah it's cbs 630 kickoff on cbs
- 20:32Speaker 1: i mean literally used to reserve that spot for alabama lsu.
- 20:36Speaker 4: Wow that would be my third option in that window
- 20:40Speaker 4: they have a cbs double header think about when the
- 20:43Speaker 4: sec on cbs had.
- 20:44Speaker 6: A double header it's mississippi state minnesota Texas Tech, Oregon State.
- 20:48Speaker 6: We've got the Seahawks at night. I can't remember the
- 20:51Speaker 6: last time we had the Seahawks at night. That's almost
- 20:54Speaker 6: always the 11 o'clock game.
- 20:55Speaker 4: I think we had a top 15 day one time
- 20:57Speaker 4: where we had Auburn at Texas A & M and
- 20:59Speaker 4: then Alabama LSU.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Look what CBS has become. All right. Let's continue the
- 21:06Speaker 1: college football talk on the other side. This is the
- 21:08Speaker 1: next round presented by Hard Rock Bets. on Sporting State.
- 21:12Speaker 1: Back with you on the next round presented by Hard

- 22:42Speaker 1: That's C-R-O-C-K-E-T-T, CrockettCoffee.com. Here's Steve Sarkeesian on the magnitude of
- 22:53Speaker 1: this Ohio State trip to Austin.
- 22:56Speaker 7: I don't think I need to really like spend so
- 22:59Speaker 7: much energy and time on what does this game mean, right?
- 23:06Speaker 7: I think as a competitor, it's like, hey, we get
- 23:09Speaker 7: an opportunity to play the number one team in the country,
- 23:12Speaker 7: a team we've had two battles with the last two years,
- 23:16Speaker 7: and we know what that takes. I'm not so consumed
- 23:19Speaker 7: with what the end result might be, you know, four
- 23:23Speaker 7: months down the road. We've got other games to go
- 23:25Speaker 7: play that can contribute one way or the other to
- 23:29Speaker 7: our success that we have in the season. What I
- 23:33Speaker 7: am excited about is as a competitor, And for our team,
- 23:36Speaker 7: the locker room and building full of competitors that we
- 23:39Speaker 7: have is that we get an opportunity to go against
- 23:41Speaker 7: the best. And how are we going to perform against
- 23:44Speaker 7: the best? Because our best is going to be needed.
- 23:46Speaker 7: This is about the life of a competitor and putting
- 23:49Speaker 7: yourself in the arena and performing under what would deem
- 23:55Speaker 7: stressful conditions, right? Because if you're wrong, they can hurt you.
- 23:59Speaker 7: But if we're right, we can hurt them.
- 24:01Speaker 1: And so.
- 24:02Speaker 7: That's the exciting part of preparing for that at DKR
- 24:07Speaker 7: in front of our crowd with I bet there's close
- 24:10Speaker 7: to 20 million people that watch this game. And so,
- 24:13Speaker 7: you know, that's that's pretty cool when you think about
- 24:15Speaker 7: that way.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Back to the matter is, though, Ohio State's eliminated Texas,
- 24:19Speaker 1: so to speak, the last two years, one technically in
- 24:22Speaker 1: the playoffs and in the last year. A win, and
- 24:25Speaker 1: they would have been in. A loss, isn't why they
- 24:27Speaker 1: were kept out, but.
- 24:29Speaker 4: I mean, it kind of was. I mean, we talked
- 24:30Speaker 4: about if they had an Indiana-like schedule, if they didn't play...
- 24:34Speaker 4: Ohio State, if they would have played a directional Texas school,
- 24:37Speaker 4: they would have been 10-2 and they would have gotten in.
- 24:39Speaker 4: You know, it was just a tough start because you
- 24:41Speaker 4: had Arch and all of this offseason hype. I mean,
- 24:44Speaker 4: it was LeBron James-like. It was Tim Tebow-like. It was
- 24:48Speaker 4: to a level you just don't see maybe every decade
- 24:51Speaker 4: or so. And he went out and he didn't play well.
- 24:53Speaker 4: He was 17-30, 170 yards, and they scored one touchdown
- 24:58Speaker 4: in the fourth quarter. They were awful in the first half.
- 25:01Speaker 4: they were able to at least keep it tight and
- 25:03Speaker 4: lose 14-7. It just seemed like those programs when you
- 25:06Speaker 4: were watching the game were in different spots. Ohio State
- 25:09Speaker 4: coming off a national championship in front of their fans,
- 25:12Speaker 4: going against a first-ever starting quarterback in Arch Manning. So
- 25:17Speaker 4: I think it's a little more balanced this year. I
- 25:19Speaker 4: don't know who's got the more talented roster. Obviously, these
- 25:22Speaker 4: are two of the most talented five rosters in college football.
- 25:25Speaker 4: But I think the circumstances are definitely different this year.
- 25:27Speaker 1: It was interesting when you asked Chip, hey, who's this
- 25:30Speaker 1: game bigger for? More pressure, Texas or Ohio State? And
- 25:33Speaker 1: he said Sark. Yeah. He didn't even say Texas. He
- 25:36Speaker 1: just said Sark. I mean, this is... I guess at
- 25:39Speaker 1: some point Texas fans think you've got to beat Ohio
- 25:41Speaker 1: State to win a national championship, and he hasn't done it. Well,
- 25:44Speaker 1: if you're an offensive genius, which I believe Sark is, you've,
- 25:50Speaker 1: as he said, twice in the red zone come away
- 25:52Speaker 1: with no points. That odd play call against Ohio State
- 25:56Speaker 1: in the playoffs where it ended up going backwards, and
- 26:00Speaker 1: then last year they get to the red zone I
- 26:02Speaker 1: think a couple of times and come away with no points,
- 26:04Speaker 1: 14-7 with Arch. The key here is Arch Manning. How
- 26:08Speaker 1: much has he grown since that game? Here's Ryan Day
- 26:11Speaker 1: yesterday on Arch Manning's improvement since they played last year
- 26:15Speaker 1: at the SHU.
- 26:17Speaker 5: Yeah, you think about that game last year between Julian
- 26:20Speaker 5: and Arch, really their first starts. And I know maybe
- 26:25Speaker 5: Arch had played a little bit before, but that was
- 26:27Speaker 5: really their first games. And to where they are now,
- 26:31Speaker 5: two totally different players, in my opinion. Um, you watched
- 26:34Speaker 5: it last year as Arch played, he got better and
- 26:36Speaker 5: better and better. I thought he was playing some really
- 26:38Speaker 5: good football at the end of the season, you know,
- 26:40Speaker 5: and did some really good things in the first game
- 26:41Speaker 5: of the year. Um, you know, this past Saturday, um,
- 26:46Speaker 5: you know, he, he can beat you with his legs.
- 26:47Speaker 5: He can be downfield. He can make the throws when
- 26:50Speaker 5: he needs to. Um, you know, he's, he's really improved and,
- 26:54Speaker 5: you know, give him a lot of credit for putting
- 26:55Speaker 5: the work in and also give Sark and his staff
- 26:57Speaker 5: credit for continuing to develop them, you know, and, um, So,
- 27:01Speaker 5: you know, he's going to have a great season and
- 27:03Speaker 5: he's going to be a great challenge for our defense.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Who's the better quarterback in the game?
- 27:08Speaker 4: I mean, I think where they are right now, probably
- 27:10Speaker 4: saying just more efficient. I think the upside is definitely arched.
- 27:14Speaker 4: You forget that it was Sayan's first game, and he
- 27:16Speaker 4: didn't play bad last year. But Jeremiah Smith, I mean,
- 27:19Speaker 4: two things to look at. He was not a factor
- 27:21Speaker 4: last year. Smith had six grabs, 43 yards.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Probably the last game he was not a factor in. Yeah,
- 27:27Speaker 1: probably so.
- 27:27Speaker 4: And then on the other side, like Texas, you mentioned
- 27:30Speaker 4: to Chip Brown, Hollywood Smothers were Leak Brown. Their running
- 27:34Speaker 4: backs are better this year, and they had success against
- 27:36Speaker 4: that Matt Patricia defense running the football. They had 166 yards,
- 27:39Speaker 4: four and a half yards. yards per carry they would
- 27:42Speaker 4: take that number right now.
- 27:44Speaker 1: And and their edge and arch's ability to get the
- 27:46Speaker 1: ball to the receivers downfield now has only improved with
- 27:50Speaker 1: cam coleman and what wingo is i mean texas has
- 27:54Speaker 1: weapons that you've got to defend down the field that's
- 27:57Speaker 1: only going to open up that texas run game yeah
- 27:59Speaker 1: i mean cam coleman only had three catches saturday against
- 28:02Speaker 1: texas state but there were two of them were touchdowns
- 28:04Speaker 1: and they were all big plays.
- 28:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 28:06Speaker 4: I would say both of these teams, very, very vanilla
- 28:09Speaker 4: against ball state and Texas state last week. Do you guys,
- 28:13Speaker 4: I mean, what is that number going to be? Sark
- 28:14Speaker 4: said 20 million. That seems a little aggressive.
- 28:17Speaker 1: You got competition.
- 28:18Speaker 4: Like, I mean, not a lot.
- 28:20Speaker 1: You don't have a lot.
- 28:21Speaker 4: Do you think it's 15 million?
- 28:22Speaker 1: I'm sure looking at the other primetime games. Oh, Texas
- 28:25Speaker 1: Tech and Oregon State and CBS. Iowa State and Iowa.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Iowa State and Iowa and NBC. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe
- 28:30Speaker 1: everybody will watch it.
- 28:31Speaker 4: Little old Dabo's playing at 630.
- 28:32Speaker 1: Oh, are they? I think it'll go over 20. Do
- 28:35Speaker 1: you really? I don't know, Jim. What's the big game?
- 28:37Speaker 1: Ohio State-Michigan at the end. Well, let me ask you this.
- 28:40Speaker 1: I'll find it. There's a difference between a Wednesday and
- 28:43Speaker 1: a Saturday night.
- 28:43Speaker 4: But tonight... With what you've got with the Patriots in Seattle,
- 28:48Speaker 4: Super Bowl 60 rematch.
- 28:49Speaker 1: $ 45 million.
- 28:50Speaker 2: Okay.
- 28:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I got standalone NBC NFL.
- 28:55Speaker 4: You think Netflix will hurt the number tomorrow night?
- 28:57Speaker 1: Yeah, it'll be a smaller number than what that will be,
- 29:00Speaker 1: but it'll still be a big number. It'll be a
- 29:01Speaker 1: huge number. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if it did. Thanks,
- 29:04Speaker 1: first of all, for reminding me that's on Netflix. I mean,
- 29:06Speaker 1: could that be that I've been searching to find that
- 29:08Speaker 1: freaking game?
- 29:10Speaker 4: I'm trying to think of other events because, you know,
- 29:12Speaker 4: Netflix has live stream things, but could this be the
- 29:15Speaker 4: biggest Netflix audience for one event ever?
- 29:18Speaker 1: I guess their Christmas game was the largest until right now, right?
- 29:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:23Speaker 1: So that's what you're trying to beat. $ 45 million tonight.
- 29:28Speaker 4: God, that's massive.
- 29:29Speaker 5: It is.
- 29:30Speaker 1: And I'd say 21. It's going to get 21 Saturday night.
- 29:34Speaker 1: You think so?
- 29:35Speaker 4: Texas and Ohio State. 15% of our country is going
- 29:37Speaker 4: to be watching the game tonight.
- 29:39Speaker 1: Yeah. 21 is just, I mean, that is a big number, man.
- 29:44Speaker 1: I make big picks. I've seen you do it.
- 29:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I talked to Buddy today, and his daughter's got
- 29:51Speaker 4: her engagement party Saturday night.
- 29:53Speaker 1: Really?
- 29:54Speaker 4: I was just like, damn.
- 29:55Speaker 1: It's not even a wedding? No, it's an engagement party.
- 29:57Speaker 1: It's an engagement party.
- 29:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Our buddy Brad. Fall weddings, that's frequently debated on all
- 30:03Speaker 1: digital platforms.
- 30:04Speaker 4: I've got one coming up in a couple of weeks.
- 30:06Speaker 1: But, I mean, not even discussion, engagement parties.
- 30:11Speaker 3: I know.
- 30:11Speaker 4: That's crazy.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Unless it's a viewing party of watching a football game.
- 30:15Speaker 1: I mean, we can celebrate during halftime, the couple, if
- 30:19Speaker 1: you want to.
- 30:20Speaker 4: Now, they are Mississippi State fans, for whatever that's worth.
- 30:22Speaker 1: So they're not football fans. That's a big 230 game
- 30:25Speaker 1: for them.
- 30:26Speaker 4: It really is.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Road game, though, so they're not having to worry about Starkville.
- 30:32Speaker 1: It's going to be such a big game. And I
- 30:35Speaker 1: don't think it disappoints. I think it's going to be
- 30:37Speaker 1: a really, really good game. But in the olden days,
- 30:40Speaker 1: it could have playoff implications. Today's day, of the way
- 30:45Speaker 1: we do a 12-team playoff, more on that in a second,
- 30:49Speaker 1: Both of these teams can absorb not only this loss,
- 30:53Speaker 1: but probably even two more. One more easily. Two more probably.
- 31:01Speaker 4: I still think the loser of this game is behind
- 31:03Speaker 4: the eight ball just based on their schedules, both of them,
- 31:05Speaker 4: because just look at what Ohio State's got coming up.
- 31:08Speaker 4: They've got to go to Iowa. Again, I don't know
- 31:10Speaker 4: how Iowa's going to score, but really good defense. At Indiana,
- 31:13Speaker 4: at USC, Oregon, and Michigan. Now Michigan probably doesn't matter.
- 31:17Speaker 1: We've talked all year. Yeah, Michigan looks less daunting than
- 31:19Speaker 1: it did. But they've owned that rivalry.
- 31:21Speaker 4: Texas, if they were to lose this game, they've still
- 31:23Speaker 4: got to go to Tennessee, neutral side against Oklahoma. Florida,
- 31:27Speaker 4: Ole Miss, at Missouri, at LSU, at A & M.
- 31:29Speaker 1: And you skipped over state. And I understand why you did.
- 31:32Speaker 1: I understand why you did. But do that stretch again
- 31:34Speaker 1: right there. Where does it– go post-Oklahoma. Do that stretch again.
- 31:38Speaker 1: Now that you've watched one week of football, listen to
- 31:40Speaker 1: this stretch of games for Texas.
- 31:41Speaker 4: So post-Oklahoma because before– We'll start with Oklahoma.
- 31:44Speaker 1: Well, let's start with Tennessee. At Tennessee. At Tennessee, now
- 31:46Speaker 1: that you've watched a week.
- 31:48Speaker 5: Yep.
- 31:48Speaker 4: And then Oklahoma neutral site.
- 31:50Speaker 1: Neutral site, all right.
- 31:51Speaker 4: Both of those games are really, really difficult.
- 31:53Speaker 1: Very losable games.
- 31:54Speaker 4: Then you've got Florida. At least it's in Austin.
- 31:57Speaker 1: Yeah, but now the– It's a losable game. But Florida
- 31:58Speaker 1: popped them.
- 31:59Speaker 4: In the head last year.
- 32:00Speaker 1: You know what everybody's talking about right now is Buster
- 32:02Speaker 1: Faulkner's offense. I mean, it is one of the biggest
- 32:04Speaker 1: talking points in the country.
- 32:05Speaker 4: Then you've got Ole Miss.
- 32:06Speaker 1: That's right. Now that you've watched Ole Miss once. I
- 32:09Speaker 1: think they're– Trinidad and Chambliss can actually win a game.
- 32:11Speaker 4: Yeah, and if they clean it up defensively, I think
- 32:14Speaker 4: Ole Miss is going to be fine. But Ke'wan Lacy
- 32:15Speaker 4: needs to come back 100%. Mississippi State.
- 32:18Speaker 1: State, I mean, that's your layup in this whole thing.
- 32:20Speaker 1: Your easiest game is State. And how difficult was that
- 32:22Speaker 1: game last year? Yeah, exactly. They almost lost it in
- 32:25Speaker 1: Starkville last year, and State's better.
- 32:27Speaker 4: At Missouri. I mean, you know, I don't know. It's
- 32:30Speaker 4: still a dangerous game. At LSU, they're going to be underdogs.
- 32:34Speaker 4: That's harder than you thought it was in the preseason.
- 32:36Speaker 4: Arkansas will give them a layup. And then at A & M.
- 32:38Speaker 4: I mean, where everything is going to be on the line.
- 32:39Speaker 1: You've watched a week of football now. That Texas schedule
- 32:41Speaker 1: feels a little different than it did in the offseason.
- 32:43Speaker 4: To your point, I understand you can absorb a couple
- 32:45Speaker 4: of losses, but the team... that gets an out-of-conference loss
- 32:48Speaker 4: with what they've got coming up in the Big Ten
- 32:50Speaker 4: and the SEC, it's going to be difficult for them
- 32:52Speaker 4: to not lose three games.
- 32:53Speaker 1: My point being, 9-3 Ohio State. And listen, I go
- 32:57Speaker 1: by the belief that the Big Ten will always get
- 33:02Speaker 1: three in, the SEC will always get three in, in
- 33:05Speaker 1: this 12-team playoff that we're in right now. Truthfully, I
- 33:10Speaker 1: think four and four, but I know we've had three
- 33:12Speaker 1: at times. So I'll say at least three teams in.
- 33:16Speaker 1: Even at 9-3, Ohio State's in a conversation for that
- 33:21Speaker 1: third team, definitely in the conversation for that fourth team
- 33:25Speaker 1: out of the Big Ten. So for Texas, though, 9-3,
- 33:29Speaker 1: I think with everybody else in the SEC, I think
- 33:33Speaker 1: they would be, if four is in from the Big Ten,
- 33:35Speaker 1: four is in from the SEC, 9-3 Ohio State is
- 33:38Speaker 1: the fourth team in the Big Ten. 9-3 Texas won't
- 33:42Speaker 1: be the fourth team in the SEC, in my opinion.
- 33:43Speaker 4: My bold prediction two weeks ago was the loser of
- 33:47Speaker 4: this game will become the first three-loss team to ever
- 33:49Speaker 4: get to a college football playoff. That could very easily happen.
- 33:51Speaker 4: I just think their schedules are that difficult.
- 33:53Speaker 1: Just to quickly close the circle here, Texas-Ohio State last
- 33:57Speaker 1: year had 16 million viewers on Fox. That was a
- 33:59Speaker 1: big noon kickoff that day.
- 34:00Speaker 4: At 11 o'clock.
- 34:01Speaker 1: There were only two games that were 20 million or
- 34:03Speaker 1: more in college football last year. It was Bama-Indiana in
- 34:06Speaker 1: the Rose Bowl and the national championship game of Miami
- 34:08Speaker 1: in Indiana. A regular season Ohio State-Michigan game, which is
- 34:13Speaker 1: the highest rated regular season game every year, was $ 18. 4
- 34:16Speaker 1: million on the Fox Big Noon. So $ 20 million would
- 34:19Speaker 1: be a hefty audience for this game if that's what
- 34:21Speaker 1: it is. No offense, but that is Fox Big Noon.
- 34:25Speaker 1: This is primetime. It's ABC slash ESPN. And the competition
- 34:33Speaker 1: is not there that is there with Michigan and Ohio State.
- 34:37Speaker 1: with all the rivalry stuff going on, if Michigan and
- 34:39Speaker 1: Ohio state were playing in this, in this, uh, on
- 34:43Speaker 1: this window, this window, 25 million viewers. Yeah. It would be,
- 34:46Speaker 1: it would be closer to 25 million.
- 34:48Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 34:48Speaker 1: But I think, you know, where Michigan is and where
- 34:51Speaker 1: Texas is, you're going to get big game, like Michigan,
- 34:54Speaker 1: Ohio state, like numbers. I mean, Texas is a big state,
- 34:57Speaker 1: a lot of, a lot of big TV markets. Oh yeah. No,
- 34:59Speaker 1: you're absolutely right. It's going to be a big number. Yeah.
- 35:02Speaker 1: I don't deny that. San Antonio. I mean, you get
- 35:03Speaker 1: a lot of metered markets there and, A lot of
- 35:06Speaker 1: Texas fans everywhere. Same for Ohio State with Columbus and
- 35:09Speaker 1: Cincinnati and Cleveland and all that. And that's just in the.
- 35:11Speaker 4: States with these.
- 35:12Speaker 1: And there'll be people hate watching.
- 35:15Speaker 4: Both sides.
- 35:16Speaker 1: Who are they hating?
- 35:19Speaker 4: I don't know who's more hated right now. Probably Ohio
- 35:21Speaker 4: State because of the success. But hate watching is real. Hey,
- 35:24Speaker 4: more on that 12-team playoff because something got triggered yesterday.
- 35:29Speaker 4: And usually it's me, but something legally got triggered yesterday
- 35:33Speaker 4: involving the college football playoff.
- 35:35Speaker 1: We'll talk about that and a couple of more games
- 35:37Speaker 1: to look ahead to. And a little bit more on
- 35:40Speaker 1: tonight's NFL kickoff, New England and Seattle, when we continue
- 35:43Speaker 1: on the next round presented by Hard Rock Bets right
- 35:45Speaker 1: here on Sporting State. Before LT tells you about Clay
- 35:49Speaker 1: Travis Law, just a couple of things that were big
- 35:53Speaker 1: yesterday and last night.
- 35:54Speaker 7: LSU.
- 35:57Speaker 1: Has moved on from the NFL players Daquan Wright and
- 36:00Speaker 1: Zavian Harris. They finished their 105-man roster last night, completed that.
- 36:07Speaker 1: We'll see if the SEC still has their Thursday meeting
- 36:12Speaker 1: to discuss expulsion and other penalties against LSU with the
- 36:17Speaker 1: league presidents. But LSU backed down on playing those NFL players.
- 36:21Speaker 1: They filled out their 105-man roster. Daquan Wright and Zavian Harris,
- 36:27Speaker 1: are exploring their legal options now against LSU, holding them
- 36:30Speaker 1: in contempt of court. Offered that TRO last week. Something
- 36:34Speaker 1: to keep an eye on. The other story yesterday afternoon
- 36:38Speaker 1: was the MAAC appealing the ending of the Western Michigan-Michigan game.
- 36:44Speaker 1: They wanted the NCAA and the FBS Oversight Committee to
- 36:49Speaker 1: change the outcome of the game because of replay protocol.
- 36:53Speaker 1: Rule 1-1-3B, though, Brownie, that's different than the SEC's rule 3-1-5.
- 37:02Speaker 1: But the rule that the NCAA is citing, because the
- 37:05Speaker 1: game ended, there's very little they could do, right? That's right.
- 37:08Speaker 1: But basically what the NCAA is saying, and they've sent
- 37:11Speaker 1: out a memo to all the schools now, and what
- 37:14Speaker 1: they're saying is what Mike Pereira said with CLAD, which was,
- 37:19Speaker 1: we were always taught in the NFL, if there is
- 37:22Speaker 1: a timing issue, Go with the time that the TV
- 37:25Speaker 1: audience can see. Always default to that. That millions of
- 37:28Speaker 1: people can see. That's right. I think his quote was,
- 37:31Speaker 1: you got to go with what 10 million people can see,
- 37:33Speaker 1: not three people. That's right. So basically what they're saying
- 37:36Speaker 1: is if there is an embedded clock on the TV copy,
- 37:39Speaker 1: which is what everybody's going crazy about, not the NBC
- 37:42Speaker 1: clock on the scoreboard. The one everybody's going crazy about
- 37:45Speaker 1: is the one you're actually showing me, the stadium clock embedded.
- 37:48Speaker 1: It touches the dude's hands after the clock hits zero.
- 37:52Speaker 1: That's right. Everybody can see that. And everybody in the world.
- 37:54Speaker 1: To your point again, this is, it's an embedded shot
- 37:57Speaker 1: of the stadium clock. And what the NCAA is saying
- 37:59Speaker 1: is even if that is not in sync, you got
- 38:02Speaker 1: to go by it because it's what the viewing public
- 38:04Speaker 1: can see. Yeah. And, and that's gotta be your, that's
- 38:07Speaker 1: gotta be your default.
- 38:08Speaker 4: So much for you guys theory though on, uh, the
- 38:11Speaker 4: mac not wanting it.
- 38:12Speaker 1: To upset no i mean i was a little surprised
- 38:14Speaker 1: by this i really was.
- 38:15Speaker 4: I mean because it's it's not like this can happen
- 38:18Speaker 4: yeah it's not like they're going to overturn the game
- 38:19Speaker 4: why even air the grievance yeah because it's it's done.
- 38:23Speaker 1: Because i that was one of the most surprising things
- 38:24Speaker 1: to me is the mac got this aggressive about it
- 38:26Speaker 1: that's right and for people that don't know the mac
- 38:28Speaker 1: and the big 10 i don't know if it's an
- 38:31Speaker 1: official schedule and agreement because of travel and everything though
- 38:34Speaker 1: but Just look at Michigan. They play Western Michigan and
- 38:37Speaker 1: they play the teams in the state of Michigan. In
- 38:39Speaker 1: our state, Alabama doesn't play UAB, Troy, Jacksonville State. That's right.
- 38:44Speaker 1: But Michigan plays Western Michigan. It's what keeps those programs
- 38:47Speaker 1: afloat or their games versus Big Ten games and Big
- 38:50Speaker 1: Ten teams in football. So basically NCAA said, when it
- 38:53Speaker 1: comes down to a timing issue, use the clocks everyone
- 38:56Speaker 1: can see. And they even said, if you don't have
- 38:57Speaker 1: the embedded game clock, use the scoreboard clock. It may
- 39:00Speaker 1: be off, but it's the one everybody can see. That's
- 39:03Speaker 1: the one you go with.
- 39:03Speaker 3: Do not.
- 39:05Speaker 1: do what Michigan did or the Big Ten did and
- 39:07Speaker 1: go to a clock that, you know, is only on
- 39:09Speaker 1: the screen that the guy's looking through the hood at, right?
- 39:13Speaker 1: I think two things could come of this. Live replay
- 39:19Speaker 1: on the major television broadcast or all of them, like
- 39:23Speaker 1: the ACC and the Big 12 do now. But also
- 39:27Speaker 1: because in basketball for years, we would have the old
- 39:31Speaker 1: uh the clock says zero but the horn didn't go
- 39:34Speaker 1: off that's right right so they were saying the clock
- 39:37Speaker 1: says zero but the horn didn't go off so that
- 39:40Speaker 1: means there is less than a second still left and
- 39:43Speaker 1: that's when we started getting the 59.6 seconds, 48.2 seconds.
- 39:49Speaker 1: And I wonder if we'll see that on scoreboards now
- 39:51Speaker 1: moving forward if we start going to the 10th of
- 39:54Speaker 1: a second scoreboard. Which, ironically, they have at Thompson High School. Oh,
- 40:00Speaker 1: they run it at Thompson, do they?
- 40:02Speaker 4: That's weird. I get it in basketball.
- 40:04Speaker 1: But see, the whole thing in basketball is the clock
- 40:07Speaker 1: is not what matters, as you said. Like, the clock
- 40:09Speaker 1: is what matters in football. But in basketball, everybody in
- 40:12Speaker 1: the arena... It's the light, right? It's the light on
- 40:14Speaker 1: the backboard. Everybody knows it. That's right. I mean, there
- 40:17Speaker 1: is no... The horn can sound, but if that light
- 40:19Speaker 1: hasn't gone off, everybody in the arena knows it's the
- 40:22Speaker 1: light that matters. I wonder if we get lights on goalposts.
- 40:25Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 40:26Speaker 4: Again, this would be knee-jerk, but this is A &
- 40:30Speaker 4: M and LSU all over again.
- 40:31Speaker 1: We changed overtime completely because of one game, Texas A &
- 40:35Speaker 1: M and LSU. Tell us about Clay Travis Law as
- 40:38Speaker 1: we wind down our part of– The next round today
- 40:41Speaker 1: by Hard Rock Bets here on Sporting State.

- 40:46Speaker 4: a wreck, a fall, a doctor who wasn't paying attention,

- 41:31Speaker 1: Okay, yesterday, according to Ross Dellinger... The college football playoff,
- 41:37Speaker 1: which is all the commissioners of the conferences and Notre Dame,
- 41:42Speaker 1: triggered a 30-day window, Brownie, where this doesn't mean we're
- 41:48Speaker 1: going to a 2014 playoff next week or it's going
- 41:51Speaker 1: to be announced in 30 days or next year, but
- 41:54Speaker 1: there's a 30-day window now that ESPN has 30 days
- 41:59Speaker 1: to put out a financial statement proposal of what they
- 42:06Speaker 1: would pay for a 16 team or a 24 team
- 42:10Speaker 1: or 20 team playoff and it's a 30-day window here
- 42:13Speaker 1: where the college football playoff committee can get a feel
- 42:17Speaker 1: on maybe the television partners desire appetite for more playoff
- 42:22Speaker 1: football interesting here that they triggered this window now before
- 42:28Speaker 1: we get to December because December 1 is sort of
- 42:31Speaker 1: when we have always drew that sort of imaginary line
- 42:34Speaker 1: that we've got to be decided by December 1 on
- 42:37Speaker 1: what playoff format we'll use next year. Seems like we
- 42:41Speaker 1: could come up in February, March, April for me and
- 42:43Speaker 1: we'd be okay. But December is sort of that deadline.
- 42:47Speaker 1: They've triggered this window now, according to Ross Dellinger, to
- 42:50Speaker 1: sort of see ESPN, who has first right of refusal,
- 42:54Speaker 1: what their appetite is for possible expansion. Well, so the
- 42:57Speaker 1: last time this was up for bid, what did Fox
- 42:59Speaker 1: bid on it?
- 43:00Speaker 4: Zero.
- 43:01Speaker 1: What did CBS bid on it?
- 43:02Speaker 6: Zero.
- 43:03Speaker 1: So if I'm ESPN, why would I throw a number
- 43:05Speaker 1: out there? Right? You don't. I mean, until I know
- 43:10Speaker 1: if Fox or CBS is going to bid on this thing.
- 43:12Speaker 4: Or throw out a dollar.
- 43:13Speaker 1: Yeah, if I'm ESPN, what are we paying right now? Well,
- 43:15Speaker 1: you're paying whatever it is. I don't even know what
- 43:17Speaker 1: it is. $ 200 million. All right, we'll pay $ 201 million.
- 43:21Speaker 1: I mean, I don't understand what it benefits.
- 43:23Speaker 4: There's no more demand for it.
- 43:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know what it benefits ESPN to throw
- 43:28Speaker 1: out any sort of number here. And the NFL doesn't
- 43:30Speaker 1: go away. So, you know, there are some games that
- 43:35Speaker 1: ESPN is selling off already to, is it Turner TNT
- 43:39Speaker 1: they sell it off to? That they're selling off games
- 43:41Speaker 1: already that are going opposite of the NFL. That's right.
- 43:44Speaker 1: So those games aren't going away. So there are going
- 43:47Speaker 1: to be, you know, possibly some more games going against
- 43:50Speaker 1: the NFL window that you're going to sell off anyway.
- 43:52Speaker 1: It's fascinating they've done this. Well, yeah, it is because, again,
- 43:56Speaker 1: when I saw this, I'm like, why would ESPN throw
- 43:59Speaker 1: a number out there? First of all, they've got the
- 44:00Speaker 1: current contract and they were the only ones that bid
- 44:03Speaker 1: on it. I mean, honestly, ESPN overbid already, didn't they?
- 44:07Speaker 1: Because they were the ones bidding on it. I think
- 44:09Speaker 1: the way it works, and I may be wrong on this,
- 44:11Speaker 1: but if you read Ross's, maybe they do have to
- 44:13Speaker 1: put a bid out. It's their right of first refusal,
- 44:16Speaker 1: the 30-day window. So it opens up after that if
- 44:21Speaker 1: they choose not to do it. Because here's what we
- 44:23Speaker 1: talked about. Depending on how they do this, they could
- 44:28Speaker 1: be paying for more crappy games. Now, we've looked at
- 44:30Speaker 1: what it would be last year, and the games were
- 44:32Speaker 1: more entertaining than I thought they would be. But if
- 44:35Speaker 1: you're just adding a bunch of– well, let me back
- 44:37Speaker 1: this up. I think it was the 24 we looked
- 44:39Speaker 1: at and we're like, man, look at some of these
- 44:41Speaker 1: crappy games. They're not going to pay that much more
- 44:43Speaker 1: for those. Now a 16 where everybody plays in the
- 44:46Speaker 1: first round, now you got my attention. If you only
- 44:48Speaker 1: have one G6 and then basically the 15 other best teams,
- 44:55Speaker 1: 16 seems to be the number to me.
- 44:57Speaker 4: Oh, I agree. I mean, 24 is ridiculous.
- 44:59Speaker 1: 24 seems ridiculous. But if you just went 16 right now– Well,
- 45:03Speaker 1: I mean, 16 is clean.
- 45:04Speaker 4: You don't have any buys.
- 45:05Speaker 1: No buys.
- 45:06Speaker 4: You do that first round on college campuses. I mean, look,
- 45:12Speaker 4: we've seen 12. I mean, 12 got better from year
- 45:14Speaker 4: one to year two.
- 45:15Speaker 1: Yeah, and I hate to be that guy, but I
- 45:17Speaker 1: would be. Be that guy. This is one of those
- 45:20Speaker 1: we can cut out and send to Clay, joke on
- 45:22Speaker 1: the text last night. I would be 16, and I
- 45:26Speaker 1: would be the only way the G6 gets in is
- 45:28Speaker 1: if they're one of the top 16 teams. And that
- 45:30Speaker 1: would be it.
- 45:31Speaker 4: I don't have a problem with that. I mean, if
- 45:32Speaker 4: you're not a top 16 team, you don't belong in this.
- 45:36Speaker 4: I mean, you've got no shot at really making that wrong.
- 45:38Speaker 1: Well, your highest G6 right now is Boise at 26. Now,
- 45:41Speaker 1: Boise's not bad. No, Boise's good, actually. They could be
- 45:44Speaker 1: 16 by the end of the year. But for sure,
- 45:46Speaker 1: if you can throw up yesterday's AP poll. And that's
- 45:49Speaker 1: what I was going by.
- 45:49Speaker 4: Well, let me ask you this. Would Western Michigan have
- 45:51Speaker 4: been ranked if they would have won that game?
- 45:53Speaker 1: It sounds like a knee jerk.
- 45:57Speaker 4: Boise, it's almost the perception is they won.
- 45:59Speaker 1: They got 12 votes. Boise was 26, by the way.
- 46:02Speaker 1: They were the first team out. Boise probably should have
- 46:05Speaker 1: been in there for me. Boise was at 86 points.
- 46:08Speaker 1: Western Michigan was at 12, to show you the gap there.
- 46:10Speaker 1: 86 was first team out. Only by three points. Only
- 46:13Speaker 1: Virginia and Boise were only separated by three. But to
- 46:17Speaker 1: everyone's point, if we just went by that, And it's
- 46:20Speaker 1: a 16 team on campus for the first round or two,
- 46:25Speaker 1: whatever it has to be. 16 Penn State at Ohio
- 46:29Speaker 1: State for a playoff game. Yes, thank you. Right? BYU
- 46:32Speaker 1: at Georgia for a playoff game. USC at Notre Dame
- 46:36Speaker 1: for a playoff game. They finally play. Texas Tech at
- 46:39Speaker 1: Texas for a playoff game. Alabama at Indiana, 12-5 matchup.
- 46:45Speaker 1: We know what happens in March. Oklahoma at Oregon. Okay.
- 46:51Speaker 1: Texas A & M at Miami. Ole Miss at LSU.
- 46:53Speaker 1: It's phenomenal. I mean, that's the playoffs. That's the playoffs, man.
- 46:58Speaker 1: If I'm ESPN and you want me to bid on that, yeah,
- 47:00Speaker 1: I'll give you more money for that. Yeah. That's the playoffs.
- 47:03Speaker 1: I'll give you more money for that.
- 47:04Speaker 4: I think everybody would probably jump into that.
- 47:06Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 47:06Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, you're right. Fox and CBS all of
- 47:08Speaker 1: a sudden are like, well, wait a minute. It's not
- 47:10Speaker 1: zero this year.
- 47:10Speaker 4: That number being $ 25 million tonight. I mean, what are
- 47:13Speaker 4: these numbers?
- 47:13Speaker 1: Yeah. Because all those games will be, a lot of
- 47:16Speaker 1: them will be standalone. And look. And go Thursday night.
- 47:20Speaker 1: Go Friday night. Go all day Saturday. And maybe the
- 47:26Speaker 1: games are so big you just throw some of them
- 47:28Speaker 1: away against the NFL like we have to do. But
- 47:32Speaker 1: that's the playoff I want. You know what I'm saying?
- 47:35Speaker 1: That's the playoff I want. I'm with you. But if
- 47:37Speaker 1: Boise works its way in number 16, then that feels
- 47:42Speaker 1: better if Boise has to go play Ohio State. Because
- 47:44Speaker 1: we're like, well, Boise's the 16th best team in the country. Yes,
- 47:47Speaker 1: they're G6s. but they're the 16th best team in the country.
- 47:51Speaker 1: And at that point, we can stop saying G6 and
- 47:54Speaker 1: Power 4, in my opinion. At that point, we'll just
- 47:56Speaker 1: call them conferences. Yeah. And if you're the top 16 teams,
- 48:01Speaker 1: you're the top 16 teams. No, I'm with you. Why
- 48:05Speaker 1: even divide up what the conferences are? If you're being
- 48:07Speaker 1: the top 16, you're being the top 16. This is
- 48:10Speaker 1: in the chat, and I did not realize this was
- 48:13Speaker 1: a thing, but it's from Dave. who is an Ohio
- 48:16Speaker 1: State fan based on the helmet next to his name
- 48:18Speaker 1: in the chat. Dave, welcome in, man. Hello, Dave. Hook him.
- 48:22Speaker 1: I mean, wait. I don't know what the Buckeyes say.
- 48:27Speaker 1: He says that Michigan had the biggest drop in the
- 48:29Speaker 1: history of the poll for a team that actually won
- 48:31Speaker 1: their game.
- 48:32Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 48:33Speaker 1: I believe that. I believe that, too. To Dave's point,
- 48:36Speaker 1: I tweeted it out yesterday when it first broke. I
- 48:39Speaker 1: was like, Michigan will become, if this gets overturned, Michigan
- 48:42Speaker 1: would become the first school to storm their field after
- 48:46Speaker 1: a loss since Kentucky did it against LSU in the
- 48:48Speaker 1: Bluegrass Miracle.
- 48:50Speaker 4: Yeah, it's true.
- 48:51Speaker 1: From the AP article, Michigan went from 16 to out
- 48:55Speaker 1: of the top 25 the first time since at least
- 48:58Speaker 1: 2008 it has happened. Kansas State went from 17 to
- 49:03Speaker 1: unranked after holding off North Dakota.
- 49:07Speaker 4: I thought they lost that game.
- 49:08Speaker 1: Did they? That's from the AP article.
- 49:11Speaker 4: I think it came down to a goal line stand.
- 49:13Speaker 1: Maybe so. That's from the AP article. You would think
- 49:15Speaker 1: they would know. They have to say this is at
- 49:17Speaker 1: least 2008. You literally have the poll in the records.
- 49:20Speaker 1: You think you could tell that. So it could be
- 49:23Speaker 1: the biggest fall of all time after a win, just
- 49:26Speaker 1: to show you how little people think they won that game.
- 49:29Speaker 1: It's fascinating that that window is open now, see what
- 49:33Speaker 1: becomes of that, and then what we decide to do
- 49:35Speaker 1: in the playoffs. But we got games on the field
- 49:37Speaker 1: and some good ones happening this weekend. We'll talk more
- 49:40Speaker 1: about that coming up tomorrow, but we start the NFL
- 49:43Speaker 1: tonight and then tomorrow night we get the Rams and
- 49:47Speaker 1: the 49ers in Australia. First off, where are they playing
- 49:51Speaker 1: the game?
- 49:51Speaker 4: In Melbourne.
- 49:52Speaker 1: In Melbourne. What facility?
- 49:55Speaker 4: It is one of their rugby Australian rules facilities.
- 49:59Speaker 1: When I've seen those stadiums, they seem to have a
- 50:01Speaker 1: lot of space on the sidelines. Has anybody seen a
- 50:04Speaker 1: view of it? I haven't. Can somebody find me a picture?
- 50:07Speaker 1: Can you Google whatever the name of the stadium is
- 50:09Speaker 1: and Let me see an aerial of the Melbourne Stadium.
- 50:12Speaker 4: I've seen a lot of the different things around Melbourne
- 50:15Speaker 4: as far as trying to make the Rams feel like
- 50:17Speaker 4: the home team. They've got different murals up, and they've
- 50:22Speaker 4: decorated buses and lights and all this kind of stuff.
- 50:25Speaker 1: I saw Kyle Shanahan explaining about the time difference when
- 50:27Speaker 1: he was trying to check in with his family.
- 50:29Speaker 4: You know, the Rams aren't there yet.
- 50:32Speaker 1: No, shut up. Y'all play tomorrow night.
- 50:34Speaker 4: I know, yeah. I mean, they're probably three hours outside
- 50:37Speaker 4: of Melbourne, four hours outside.
- 50:39Speaker 2: No.
- 50:39Speaker 1: They're in Australia.
- 50:41Speaker 5: No, no.
- 50:41Speaker 4: They're on a flight right now.
- 50:43Speaker 5: No way.
- 50:44Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. You haven't heard about this?
- 50:46Speaker 5: No.
- 50:46Speaker 4: So they left L.A.
- 50:46Speaker 1: Last night?
- 50:47Speaker 4: This was the plan for the last couple of months.
- 50:49Speaker 4: So San Francisco went last week.
- 50:51Speaker 1: That's it. Last week.
- 50:52Speaker 4: The Rams will land tonight and have 24 hours in
- 50:55Speaker 4: Australia and then fly back directly.
- 50:58Speaker 1: So they're going to get reacquainted to the time. Basically,
- 51:02Speaker 1: they're going to stay on L.A. time for the season plan.
- 51:06Speaker 3: Yep.
- 51:06Speaker 1: They're almost... So they're not throwing away this first game,
- 51:09Speaker 1: but they're... One of these guys is going to get
- 51:10Speaker 1: dogged out, either Shanahan or McVay. Either you were there
- 51:13Speaker 1: too long or you were there too little. That's not
- 51:15Speaker 1: as bad as I would have thought where the field
- 51:17Speaker 1: is there. You know what the name of this place is?
- 51:19Speaker 1: I don't. Go ahead. The Melbourne Cricket Ground. Oh, there
- 51:23Speaker 1: you go.
- 51:24Speaker 4: Yeah, well, cricket.
- 51:24Speaker 1: Cricket Stadium.
- 51:26Speaker 4: It's silly.
- 51:27Speaker 1: It's... I mean, it gives me old Oakland, Alameda County
- 51:32Speaker 1: stadium vibes. I agree. For the youngs out there that
- 51:35Speaker 1: don't remember when NFL teams used to have to share
- 51:36Speaker 1: a baseball stadium with a baseball franchise, you got a
- 51:39Speaker 1: lot of these.
- 51:40Speaker 4: Can you imagine the Rams who play at SoFi walking
- 51:43Speaker 4: into this shithole?
- 51:44Speaker 1: I know. Yeah, the 49ers are like, well, thank God
- 51:47Speaker 1: it's not next to an electrical facility. It's crappy stadium, but.
- 51:51Speaker 4: At least they haven't landed.
- 51:52Speaker 1: I mean, they're literally, I had not, I think you talked,
- 51:56Speaker 1: you told me they were doing this back in the summer.
- 51:57Speaker 1: Now that it's starting to dawn on me, they were
- 51:59Speaker 1: approaching it two different ways.
- 52:00Speaker 4: They made it. And I think the decision has always
- 52:02Speaker 4: been with this. Like there was a little bit leaked
- 52:05Speaker 4: out that Aaron Donald was going to travel with the team.
- 52:07Speaker 4: I think the smart play is to give him 12
- 52:10Speaker 4: extra days to get ready for that Monday night game
- 52:13Speaker 4: against New York in SoFi instead of rushing him to
- 52:16Speaker 4: play 10 or 15 plays this weekend.
- 52:17Speaker 1: I would tell you this. I listened to Joey McGuire
- 52:20Speaker 1: yesterday on SiriusXM driving back from the golf course. It
- 52:24Speaker 1: was a replay. And by the way, after listening to him,
- 52:26Speaker 1: I love the guy. Do you? So the Texas Tech coach,
- 52:28Speaker 1: you're on him. The Texas Tech coach.
- 52:29Speaker 4: The guy that drives the Corvette.
- 52:31Speaker 1: He does. And he smokes cigars on his deck in
- 52:33Speaker 1: his wind down time and he He says, I will
- 52:37Speaker 1: watch as much football as I can, the big plays,
- 52:39Speaker 1: and former high school coach. So they're going to Corvallis. Now,
- 52:43Speaker 1: it's not going to Australia, but he's like, I've talked
- 52:46Speaker 1: to sports psychologists, our trainers and everything. We're going to
- 52:51Speaker 1: stay on our clock as we go out there, and
- 52:54Speaker 1: then when we come back, we're going to push our
- 52:56Speaker 1: clock three hours later as we prepare for a Friday
- 53:00Speaker 1: night game against Houston, a big game for them in
- 53:03Speaker 1: the Big 12 and rivalry. And that's the way McVay's
- 53:06Speaker 1: doing it. They're going to try to think long-term and
- 53:10Speaker 1: rehab and get rehabilitated on the way back.
- 53:13Speaker 4: I think you're more affected going backwards than forwards.
- 53:16Speaker 1: That's our show today. See you tomorrow.
