- 0:00It's bonus time here on the Gill Connections podcast.
- 0:03In an effort to increase communication, empathy and
- 0:06understanding around the country, we're going to be
- 0:08running a new episode every day interviewing a coach, a high
- 0:12school coach from every state, and yes, even you, Washington,
- 0:16DC with explaining how the state qualifying system works in their
- 0:21state. We'll be talking with a local
- 0:23state expert on how many classes, private versus public
- 0:27schools, what events and what is the process?
- 0:30Is it areas, districts, regionals, state meet?
- 0:34Is it a descending order list? Are there fun things that you do
- 0:38a little differently? Like maybe you, I don't know,
- 0:41maybe you do double points for relays looking at you Texas.
- 0:45And then we're also going to get to the bottom of is it the state
- 0:48meet or do you qualify for states?
- 0:50So check us out every day here in April and May of 2024 as we
- 0:54run through each state with a local state expert.
- 0:57So let's get started right now Okay today let's head down to
- 1:12the Sunshine State and it's actually, you know state of
- 1:15Florida is better known for the birth place of two very, very
- 1:18famous people, Mickey Mouse and your host Mike Cunningham.
- 1:22I'm actually an Orange County, Orlando born individual.
- 1:24So I have a big heart for this state.
- 1:26So help me welcome representing Florida Mr. Gary Dixon.
- 1:30Gary, thanks for joining us. First of all, very grateful for
- 1:33you here. Why don't you start?
- 1:34Let's get an introduction of your history in the state of
- 1:38Florida coaching high school, track and field.
- 1:40Okay. Currently I'm I'm retired 42
- 1:43years coaching. Originally from northern New
- 1:46Jersey. Came down in 88.
- 1:48Started coaching with my daughter.
- 1:50Secured a teaching position. Has been coaching since mostly
- 1:54middle school. All all events.
- 1:57But quite for the last 20 years, it's been in throws coaching
- 2:02shot as low as our 6th grade students in our middle school.
- 2:06And I continue to follow these students and coach them up
- 2:10through high school and try to get them into college.
- 2:12Awesome. But we appreciate you doing
- 2:14that. You know, we live and die on
- 2:15coaches. And so we're very, very grateful
- 2:17for your service there with our young people.
- 2:20All right, So let's start with the state of Florida.
- 2:23Some states have public versus private, a separate sector, path
- 2:29to a state meet. What is it like in Florida?
- 2:31Public and private schools altogether separate.
- 2:34What are we doing there? Altogether there's four
- 2:37divisions 18283 A M4A. They compete based on population
- 2:46of in their school. The only kind of a difference is
- 2:52is with I MG Academy. They have not been in our state
- 2:57series since they've been in Bradenton.
- 3:02I do believe this year might be the first year that non Pg's can
- 3:07compete in the state series non Pg's.
- 3:12Postgraduates, because they can do a PG year there, I believe.
- 3:15Gotcha. Postgraduate, okay, perfect.
- 3:17So next question was how many divisions?
- 3:19So we've got four classes or divisions, one through 4A, which
- 3:23is is 1A small, 4A big. One, a small 4A is big.
- 3:27All right, perfect. So we got four state
- 3:30championship teams for boys and for for girls.
- 3:34How do we qualify? What's our first round?
- 3:36Area Divisionals. Sectionals.
- 3:38What do we call it in Florida? What's the first round of the
- 3:41state series? District meet it's a district
- 3:44meet goes district regionals and then.
- 3:48State championships or states depends on on who you're talking
- 3:52to, what they call it. So district is first.
- 3:55How do kids qualify for district?
- 3:59Is that a it all comers meet anybody can enter or is there
- 4:01any kind of standard for that? For per event they do have some
- 4:06qualifying standards I think for 4th but it's four per event one
- 4:12relay team per school. So any school can pretty much
- 4:17put in 400 meter kids for long jumpers.
- 4:20For two milers 1 relay per event okay and we have we hosted
- 4:25district meet. How many qualify from the
- 4:27districts Districts to go onto regionals 4.
- 4:31Let. Me.
- 4:31Just make sure I got my notes here.
- 4:33So excuse me. Top three.
- 4:34All right. So top three go to regionals.
- 4:36All right. So out of districts in our
- 4:39triple jump, we've got the top three from each one of these
- 4:43classes, 12348 go to a regional meet.
- 4:47Correct, Okay. Now we're at regionals.
- 4:50So we've taken it from districts down to regionals.
- 4:52Do we know how many regionals we have?
- 4:56Yeah, it's tough. Because there's there's a lot of
- 4:58district mates. I off the top of my head, I
- 5:00didn't research that. Yeah, no problem.
- 5:02But we know it's small, right? There's more districts and
- 5:04there's regionals because it comes down to regionals and now
- 5:07we're at regionals, which is right before our state meet.
- 5:10How many out of regional go to the state meet?
- 5:15Is this is where it gets a little tricky.
- 5:16Top two plus up to 10 at large. There's four regional meets.
- 5:23So you have your, you had next best throws that, then the top
- 5:27throws. So let's say that again cuz that
- 5:30that's interesting. It's a little different and it's
- 5:33important. So top two, so automatically
- 5:35first place and 2nd place each event you're going to the state
- 5:37meet. Okay.
- 5:40And then say it again. There's so out of regions,
- 5:45there's two per region and then once they get that, those those
- 5:50eight places that with up to 10 at large bits out of all the
- 5:55regions, I'd say there's there four regions don't pick the top,
- 5:58they'll pick the top at large guys after that and all events
- 6:02and up to 10. Up to 10.
- 6:05I think it depends on the size how many lanes in the track.
- 6:09At the state final meet and then we go to state and so where do
- 6:13states happen? Either I don't know if they're a
- 6:17permanent side or do they rotate where we typically host in State
- 6:20Meeting and are all four at the same venue or do they split that
- 6:22up? All four at the same venue.
- 6:25It is in North Florida, which last year was at University of
- 6:28North Florida. It was originally the bid was
- 6:30University of Florida, but they're having they had some
- 6:32construction issues, so it was moved from UF to University of
- 6:38North Florida. It has been at IMG Academy,
- 6:41which is kind of ideal because it's in the middle of the state.
- 6:45If you're a Key West Miami kid, you're going a long way to go to
- 6:48UNF, so let me make sure I heard what you just said right there
- 6:52then. So it's been held at IMG, but
- 6:54IMG couldn't qualify for the meet.
- 6:57Correct. Now there is uniqueness.
- 7:01We can do an episode on that, yeah.
- 7:03Yeah. As I say, it feels like there's
- 7:04way more to unpack on that one. Awesome, Okay.
- 7:08So we start with districts, 4 per event, go on to a regional
- 7:12meet, top three from regionals goes on, no, no, top three from
- 7:15districts goes on to regionals And then out of regionals, you
- 7:19got to be in the top two up and then up to 10 at large to make
- 7:23it to the state meet, which is kind of bounced between
- 7:25University of Florida and University of North Florida
- 7:27these past few years. That sound right?
- 7:30Yeah, it hasn't been. It hasn't been with the Gators
- 7:32in a while. It's been at I MG IMG and OK and
- 7:36then North Florida. It's a fantastic facility.
- 7:39Yeah. Yeah, we did, incidentally,
- 7:42division twos down there. Twice, yeah.
- 7:44Yeah, that was great. Really good.
- 7:46Yeah. So the state meet, what kind of
- 7:50format you got four classes. You got boys teams, girls teams.
- 7:53Is this a hesitate to say a one day meet, a one day meet, three
- 7:57day meet. How do we actually run the
- 7:58series there? The state?
- 7:59In the past it was a two day meet, let's say 1A and 3A.
- 8:06And then 2A and 4A. But in recent years, it's been a
- 8:10separate meet for each division. So it's at A1A.
- 8:14Meet like Thursday, Fridays, Thursday, Friday, Saturday,
- 8:19Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
- 8:20Oh, wow. So Wednesday would be all 1A?
- 8:22Thursday would be all 2A. Yes.
- 8:25Wow, that's interesting. That's cool.
- 8:26I like that. OK.
- 8:28In Florida if we think of the standard events, the 1248 long
- 8:32jump, triple jump, maybe relays 4 by 1, 4x4, 4 by 8.
- 8:36Anything different or special there in Florida that we do
- 8:40event wise or maybe don't do? They're moving to 4400
- 8:44intermediate hurdles. Oh, right 3I.
- 8:47Think they made that move last year.
- 8:50There is there took a while. There's a.
- 8:53Gentleman at RAN ran with the baton as far as getting javelin
- 8:57back in Florida. So this year is an option year
- 9:03for point, no point for the for the plug.
- 9:09So it's an optional year. I think it will continue to be
- 9:11optional. I think in dual meets
- 9:14invitationals and stuff based on the facility going to go in real
- 9:19deal on the job and 400 hurdles. That's so in Javelin we have
- 9:25about, I want to say we're up to probably about 2520 sixish
- 9:29states now we're about half of states that have Javelin, but
- 9:32the 400 hurdles I can only think of two other states.
- 9:35So that's a a pretty unique event to move from the 300 to
- 9:39the 400 hurdles. Yeah.
- 9:41Makes sense, though. It does.
- 9:43Yeah, I think so. That's going to be tough,
- 9:45though. I mean, that's it.
- 9:46That's it's a different event, as many, many people who've gone
- 9:48from high school to college can attest to.
- 9:51I could, I could say that I love it.
- 9:54In Florida after we have the state meet, is there anything
- 9:57some states do a call it an unofficial state meet for
- 10:01heptathlon and decathlon or hammer, anything like that that
- 10:05you know of going on in Florida? Well, I'm a I'm from New Jersey
- 10:08and with how New Jersey ended their season was at me, called
- 10:11the Meet the Champions, right? I don't know if it was top two
- 10:14or top three from each of the each of divisions, including the
- 10:17and parochial A and parochial BI.
- 10:19Don't know how they do it now but it's been a long time since
- 10:21I've been there. But haven't have a true meet of
- 10:23champions, have a true meet of champions bring all those kids
- 10:26together And so that's that's eight, maybe a couple at large
- 10:30bids, one from each division. Bring me up to 12, fill the
- 10:33field out and let it go. That's what you remember.
- 10:37What, That's what you would do to change?
- 10:39Yeah. Yeah, I love that.
- 10:41I am a big proponent of meet a champion type meats.
- 10:44Absolutely. I agree with that.
- 10:46That's what I would do, yeah, 100%.
- 10:49Last couple questions here, Gary, do we do anything special
- 10:52after the state meet in regards to like do currently, do we do a
- 10:55heptathlon, decathlon meat or a hammer meat or anything like
- 10:58that? Yeah.
- 10:59No, not for Happen Decathlon. Twice a month and we were open
- 11:05hammered weight, superweight all the way.
- 11:07Well, nuts, we don't let the little kids sort of superweight,
- 11:09but we do hammer and weight. We train hammer and weight here
- 11:12in Sarasota and there's a group in Fort Lauderdale also.
- 11:17So I think getting them, getting kids that exposure free college
- 11:22has an added value is is terrific.
- 11:24And recruiting process, yeah, 100% I agree with that and you
- 11:27touched on it earlier but in this out today here settle the
- 11:31argument, do you what's the culture there?
- 11:33Do you qualify for the state meet or do you qualify for
- 11:35states? My guy I'm coaching says I'm
- 11:38going to states, Coach going to states.
- 11:41I like it. That's what I do too.
- 11:42I like states, just one easy word.
- 11:44I'm from Alabama, so I got to keep it.
- 11:45Easy words here. Gary, thank you so much.
- 11:49This is a great insight into Florida.
- 11:52You know, we did this to start conversation and for other
- 11:55states to see what other people do.
- 11:57And so I love the uniqueness of moving to the foreigner hurdles,
- 12:00Big proponent of adding the javelin, of course.
- 12:03So super excited to see Florida leading the way in high school
- 12:06track and field. Well, there's one thing I need,
- 12:09I need to add. I don't know how the other
- 12:10states do it, but we have a ambulatory and and wheelchair
- 12:14divisions, yes. And they've added more events
- 12:17this year. They've added what's my little
- 12:20CHEAT SHEET, the basically it's a full event 1248 shot put Jeff
- 12:28now is that is that a separate scoring system or does that add
- 12:33to the points of the school of that athlete?
- 12:35No, it does not add to the points.
- 12:37There's not a separate division. There's just not a separate
- 12:40state championship for like like they're so does Sarasota won the
- 12:45boys wheelchair division or the boys?
- 12:47That's not in the books. Got it?
- 12:49That's awesome. Yeah, I know some states are
- 12:51doing that. Wisconsin has a long history,
- 12:54but that's that's encouraging to see those athletes get the
- 12:57chance to. Yeah, it's nice.
- 12:58They they've added in the past. I think it was just the, the
- 13:03one, the eight and the. Shot in jab now they've added
- 13:06more events and at least one meet while I was coaching the
- 13:09young lady from Booker High. They had an abilities 4 by 1
- 13:14where it was 2 special needs athletes in two non special
- 13:21needs athletes running running in four by one.
- 13:24That was all, and I don't know if you're.
- 13:26Doing it anymore, but it might have might have been 15 or 20, I
- 13:31have not heard that. I think that's super and I'm,
- 13:33I'm, I'm a retired special Ed teacher.
- 13:35So it's it's terrific. I have not heard that and I do
- 13:38think that's super. I I agree with that.
- 13:39It'd be way cool to see that experience.
- 13:41Yeah, it's a mixed relay. It was good.
- 13:43Awesome. Well, thanks for bringing that
- 13:44up, Gary, and thank you for representing Florida.
- 13:46Very grateful for you.
