- 0:00Chapter 12 from the book of Jeremiah.
- 0:03Dear God, please give us wisdom and insight and understanding as
- 0:07we read through the words that you gave to Jeremiah.
- 0:12We ask this in Jesus name, Amen. This is titled Jeremiah's
- 0:17complaint. You are always righteous, Lord,
- 0:20when I bring a case before You. Yet I would speak with you about
- 0:25your justice. But why does the way of the
- 0:28wicked prosper? Why do all the faithless live at
- 0:32ease? You have planted them and they
- 0:37have taken root. They grow and bear fruit.
- 0:40You are always on their lips, but far from their hearts.
- 0:45You know me, Lord. You see me and test my thoughts
- 0:48about You. Then he says, drag them off like
- 0:53sheep to be butchered, set them apart for the day of slaughter.
- 0:57How long will the land lie parched and the grass in every
- 1:02field be withered? Because those who live in it are
- 1:06wicked. The animals and the birds have
- 1:08perished. Moreover, the people are saying
- 1:11he will not see what happens to us.
- 1:15And the first thing about it was the one I read.
- 1:18This was that very last statement in quotations.
- 1:23He will not see what happens to us.
- 1:26That was really confusing to me. So I went to the Blue letter
- 1:30bible.com or.org and looked up the original Hebrew words and I
- 1:38came away with a different understanding of what this
- 1:42sentence and a different way of saying this based on what I
- 1:46found in the meanings of Strong's Concordance and so
- 1:49forth. So right after it says, you
- 1:53know, because those who live in it are wicked, the animals and
- 1:56birds have perished. The way I understand it much
- 2:00better is if it were the last sentence were stated because
- 2:06they perceived not the vision of the latter time or the end That
- 2:13that's what I think would make more sense in the translation
- 2:18instead of. Moreover, the people are saying
- 2:20he will not see what happens to us.
- 2:23I mean that just doesn't make any sense at all.
- 2:25Like he referring to God will not see what happens to us.
- 2:30I don't know. Or were they talking about
- 2:33Jeremiah will not see? I don't know, but that sentence
- 2:36just didn't make sense to me. So look it up yourself and see
- 2:40what you think about it. But all these words were
- 2:43different in the Hebrew. And then to look up with the
- 2:48meaning, it just seems to make more sense because they perceive
- 2:51not the vision of the latter time or the end.
- 2:56They just had no perspective. They're not looking in at an
- 3:01eternal perspective. They're just living for the day
- 3:05and they have no care. And this is like, there's
- 3:08several different times where, you know, this is what
- 3:11Jeremiah's complaining about. He's like, why are these people
- 3:14doing well? And you test me.
- 3:17You know my heart. You do all these things to me.
- 3:19But why are they like, you know, you know, not having any of
- 3:24these repercussions and and it says, you know, you are always
- 3:28on their lips, but it's one of those, but far from their
- 3:31hearts. Like they are religious people.
- 3:34They are people who want the world to think that they are,
- 3:38you know, a whatever faithful one.
- 3:41But in their hearts, they're not.
- 3:43They don't have that relationship with God.
- 3:45They they're just, you know, doing the religious acts to make
- 3:50it look like that's where they are or they may think they are
- 3:53and it's just very superficial to them.
- 3:56And because he calls them faithless, why do they live at
- 3:59ease? So, and we will see that today
- 4:03that many people who are, you know, maybe you would say that
- 4:09they don't live the way God wants people to live, but then
- 4:12they're prosperous and they have good things happening in their
- 4:16life. And people who are following the
- 4:18Lord might look at that and say, well, why is that happening?
- 4:21And so a few different verses came to mind in reflecting on
- 4:26that. And it the, there's a couple
- 4:29different places where actually in Luke 1625.
- 4:40And I'll just read this part through 1631 and actually I'll
- 4:48read a little bit more than that.
- 4:49This is about the rich man and Lazarus.
- 4:52So it starts at Luke 16, verse 19.
- 4:55So there was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen
- 5:00and lived in luxury every day. So this is kind of the same
- 5:03context. You know, he's a rich man, he's
- 5:05dressed in the finest of things. He has all this luxury.
- 5:09At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with
- 5:15sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table.
- 5:21Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
- 5:25The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him
- 5:30to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was
- 5:36buried in Hades. So that's the the realm of the
- 5:41dead in Hades where he was in torment.
- 5:46He looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side.
- 5:54So here's the rich man. This is what the people who live
- 5:59ungodly lives but have all of the luxurious things in life
- 6:04they. This is an example of what will
- 6:08happen to them if they do not turn to God before they die or
- 6:14before Jesus returns. And so anyway, so going back to
- 6:20the Scripture. So he called to him, Father
- 6:22Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of
- 6:27his finger in water and cool my tongue because I am in agony in
- 6:31the Spire. But Abraham replied, son,
- 6:35remember that in your lifetime you received your good things
- 6:40while Lazarus received bad things.
- 6:43But now he is comforted here and you are in agony.
- 6:49So that I think is something that we all need to remember
- 6:53that especially when we hear things in the world like you
- 6:56only live once and you got to live it up and celebrate the
- 7:00moment. And you know, don't worry about
- 7:03tomorrow, just, you know, live for today.
- 7:05All those kinds of things that we hear.
- 7:07It's very short sighted and we don't want to end up like the
- 7:11rich man in this parable or this story.
- 7:15And and this is, you know, there are some like spiritual truths
- 7:20that I believe are in here because the next verse is
- 7:23something that I think people also need to understand.
- 7:26So Abraham says this also. He says, and besides all this
- 7:31between US and you, a great chasm has been set in place.
- 7:37And I looked up that word and it says a gulf has been set in
- 7:41place so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor
- 7:48can anyone crossover from there to us.
- 7:53So I think this is interesting on a bunch of different levels
- 7:56because this is like a spiritual revelation that we get from
- 8:01this. This story here is that #1
- 8:06there's if anybody's ever heard of purgatory, there is no
- 8:10purgatory. So if people are planning on
- 8:14being in purgatory and then figuring out a way to do better,
- 8:18First of all, that's not like according to the Bible, how
- 8:21people get into the Kingdom of God.
- 8:23Jesus clearly says that you have must be born again, born of the
- 8:27spirit. And then if somebody is born of
- 8:30the Spirit, that's something else that I want to bring up
- 8:34too, because a lot of people just don't, I don't, maybe they
- 8:38don't know this, but if you look up continue to sin, basically,
- 8:46and there's a couple of different verses that talk about
- 8:49this that I don't hear many churches talking about.
- 8:52So this is in first John chapter 3 verse 9 and then first John
- 8:57chapter 5 verse 18. So chapter 3.
- 9:01First, no one who is born of God is being born again, will
- 9:07continue to sin because God's seed remains in them.
- 9:14They cannot go on sinning because they have been born of
- 9:21God. So the Holy Spirit changes us,
- 9:26and the things that we did, the sinful things that we did will
- 9:30start to go away. When we receive, we'll start to
- 9:33feel conviction about it. We obviously still have free
- 9:36will, but when we are surrendered to God and we're
- 9:41saying your will, not mine, that means that we're choosing to do
- 9:45what God would want us to do rather than what we would
- 9:48initially choose. And so we don't continue to keep
- 9:53on sinning. And then in chapter 5 he says we
- 9:57know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin.
- 10:02The one who was born of God keeps them safe and the evil 1
- 10:07cannot harm them. So the God keeps people safe and
- 10:17the evil 1 cannot harm them. So these are things that I think
- 10:28people need to be aware of because they're things that are
- 10:30taught in by different religions that are not true and they can
- 10:38be harmful to people if you believe them because you may
- 10:41falsely think that you've been born, born again.
- 10:48You just think like you say a prayer and then you don't have
- 10:51to worry about anything and all your sin is covered by grace.
- 10:54That's what I hear some people say, but that's not the truth.
- 10:58There's a change in a person when they are born again and
- 11:01they become a new creation. So if someone hasn't become a
- 11:05new creation, then I would really question if that person
- 11:09is truly born again. And Jesus said and and I think
- 11:13it was John chapter 3, that in order to enter the Kingdom of
- 11:18God, you must be born again. So he did the what the most
- 11:24important thing that was needed. He died on the cross for us.
- 11:28So it's not that, it's not by our righteousness that's brought
- 11:33on by the Holy Spirit that gets us into the Kingdom of God.
- 11:36That is not what that's saying. Jesus did what needed to be done
- 11:42and only he could do to get us into the Kingdom of God.
- 11:46Because it says without the shedding of blood, there is no
- 11:49forgiveness of sin. So that's why Jesus, the perfect
- 11:53one, gave his life for all mankind, for all humans, so that
- 12:00people could. It's not saying that everybody
- 12:04is in the Kingdom of God because it relies on our choice, our
- 12:08decision. Do we surrender our will to God
- 12:13or do we keep on going in our own way?
- 12:16And these parts of Scripture like this, like it's really,
- 12:21really important because if anybody dies suddenly, you want
- 12:26to make sure of your destination.
- 12:29Where are you going to be? Are you going to be in with God
- 12:32or are you going to be separated from God?
- 12:34And and as this person says, he's in Hades, which is the
- 12:37realm of the dead, where he was in torment.
- 12:42So it wasn't just like a resting place.
- 12:45People are eternal beings. God created people to be
- 12:50eternal. The question is, where will we
- 12:54be after we die? And that's something that Jesus
- 13:01already took care of the solution for it, but now it's on
- 13:04us. What choice are we going to
- 13:06make? Now that we know that Jesus has
- 13:08done that for us, then what do we choose to do with it?
- 13:12Do we choose to surrender to God's will and become righteous
- 13:17through the Holy Spirit? Do we let God work in our lives
- 13:20and change us? Then there's a couple other
- 13:23things that that talk about the priorities that we have in life.
- 13:27And there's a few times where Jesus said something that was a
- 13:30little bit shocking to me the first time I read it.
- 13:33But then when you kind of understand it.
- 13:35So in in Matthew chapter 8 verse 22, Jesus said, but Jesus told
- 13:41him, follow me and let the dead bury their own dead.
- 13:47So in this situation, it was when Jesus was gathering his
- 13:52first getting his disciples and a disciple came up to him and
- 13:57said, Lord first, let me go and bury my father.
- 14:01But Jesus said told him, follow me and let the dead bury their
- 14:06own dead. Now that's, you know, like I
- 14:10said, the first time you read something like that, you're just
- 14:12kind of shocked. Like that seems heartless.
- 14:15But you have to understand what is being talked about here.
- 14:19This is about spiritual the this is about prioritizing the big
- 14:25picture of where we are going to be in eternity because we can't
- 14:31get short sighted and just look at the events and everything
- 14:34that's happening here on earth. We have to have that long range
- 14:39perspective of where are we going to be?
- 14:41What are we doing here in this time that will you know, are we
- 14:47building towards God's Kingdom or are we involved in worldly
- 14:54things that don't prioritize God, But that's where we have to
- 14:59prioritize God. And then in Luke Chapter 9 verse
- 15:0660, it's again the same subject matter.
- 15:10Jesus said to him, let the dead bury their own dead, but you go
- 15:15and proclaim the Kingdom of God. So our duties like every single
- 15:19person here. There are certain people that we
- 15:23can reach that others may not reach, and anybody who is in
- 15:28your inner circle of people, people that you know that may
- 15:32not hear it from somebody else. That's an opportunity to let
- 15:36people know about the Kingdom of God and let them know that there
- 15:39it's a decision like Jesus has already done.
- 15:42The hard part of it all, the impossible part of it all, but
- 15:47we just need to fully surrender if we want to be in God's
- 15:53Kingdom and that's we need to be born again.
- 15:58So in the Book of Revelation, this is another thing that is is
- 16:05interesting too. So it's Revelation chapter 22
- 16:10verse 11 and it says let the one who who does wrong continue to
- 16:18do wrong, let the vile person continue to be vile.
- 16:23Let the one who does right continue to do right and let the
- 16:28holy person continue to be holy. So again, this is another thing
- 16:37that another line that just really needs some explanation in
- 16:45some ways. So actually this is just
- 16:48searching on Google, it had a pretty good explanation of it.
- 16:51It says this quote is from the Bible, specifically Revelation
- 16:552211, and is spoken by an Angel or Jesus.
- 16:59It is not a command to continue sinning, but a statement that
- 17:03the time of judgment is near and people's choices will be fixed.
- 17:10The verse emphasizes that those who have chosen to do wrong will
- 17:15continue on that path, while those who have chosen
- 17:18righteousness will persist in holiness.
- 17:23The verse follows the instruction not to seal the
- 17:27words of the prophecy in the scroll because the time is near,
- 17:30meaning it signifies A finality. The time for repentance is
- 17:36ending, and the separation between the wicked and the holy
- 17:40will be made permanent. It's a final warning that the
- 17:46choices made will have eternal consequences and no last minute
- 17:52changes will be possible. Think about Lazarus in Hades
- 17:58when he and the the wealthy man who wanted Lazarus to help him
- 18:04out, but the wealthy man he couldn't change where he was.
- 18:09And I think there's the following verses in Revelation
- 18:112212 through 15 further explain that a reward will be given to
- 18:16each person according to their deeds.
- 18:19So that's also important because God does reward people for the
- 18:27good things that people do and it often seems like are the
- 18:30suffering that they had. If you go into the book of Job,
- 18:34it talks about all the terrible things that happened to Job, but
- 18:37then later in his life, God doubly blessed him.
- 18:41And God does do those things when when someone is turned to
- 18:46him, when someone loves him, he often we, you know, it's not
- 18:50guaranteed, but he often does that like God loves to give good
- 18:54gifts. And it does say many times where
- 18:56Jesus says, look, I the time is near.
- 18:58My reward is with me. There are rewards and for what
- 19:04we do here on earth that Jesus will reward us for what we do
- 19:10and he will have that with him when he returns.
- 19:13So this is something that don't delay in doing this because it
- 19:20could come back and bite you if if something sudden happens and
- 19:25you're not ready for it. And the Bible talks about that.
- 19:28It says, you know, it talks about Jesus's return as a thief
- 19:31in the night. But then there's also the
- 19:33unexpected thing, like just think about when somebody gets
- 19:36hurt or somebody gets sick or somebody dies suddenly.
- 19:41Those things are not planned out.
- 19:43They just happen and they shock everybody.
- 19:46That stuff can happen. So you don't want to delay your
- 19:50response to God. God has an invitation to every
- 19:54one of us, and it's up to us to respond to that invitation and
- 19:59let God know that we want to be born again, that we want His
- 20:04Holy Spirit to change our life. And it's it.
- 20:07There's no special words for it. It's just a sincere.
- 20:12A sincere conversation to God that just says God, let your
- 20:16Holy Spirit work in my life. Let let me change the way you
- 20:19want me to be, the way you designed me to be, the way that
- 20:23you want me to be in this world. Like I'm willing do these, you
- 20:28know, help me with this and anything like that.
- 20:32There's no special words. It's it's the intent, the true,
- 20:36sincere intent of a person. So if you haven't done that yet,
- 20:40I encourage you to speak that to God and then watch what happens
- 20:46in your life. So here's where God answers.
- 20:49Now we're on verse 5. If you have raced with men on
- 20:54foot and they have worn you out, how can you compare with
- 20:58compete? How can you compete with horses
- 21:03if you stumble in in safe country?
- 21:06How will you manage in the thickets by the Jordan?
- 21:12So God is responding to Jeremiah and he's basically it to me.
- 21:18This is my own interpretation of it.
- 21:20It seems like God is conditioning Jeremiah.
- 21:25Like, you know, Jeremiah's complaining, like all these
- 21:28people who don't live righteously and they're fake
- 21:31believers or fake followers, You know, they, they just do the
- 21:37religious acts, but they're far from God in heart.
- 21:42And, and he's, yeah, he's like pretty upset, right?
- 21:47But, and God is seeing that he's upset and he's like, or if you,
- 21:51if you're racing with men on foot and they've worn you out,
- 21:55how can you compete with horses like the next level?
- 21:58You know, where are you going to be that next level?
- 22:00You need to like get into condition.
- 22:04And that's the way I look at what God's reply was saying to
- 22:07him. And then, and then God says your
- 22:11relatives, members of your own family, even they have betrayed
- 22:15you. They have raised a loud cry
- 22:18against you. Do not trust them, though they
- 22:23speak well of you. Now, isn't that disheartening?
- 22:27God's revealing something to Jeremiah that his family is even
- 22:32against him. You can see like Jeremiah's
- 22:34despair, like, I mean, he writes about this too, where he just
- 22:39feels like, why was I even born when this is what my life has
- 22:42been like? But at this time, God was using
- 22:46Jeremiah to communicate this to hopefully save some people who
- 22:53were in Jerusalem, in the in Judah, in the tribe of Judah.
- 22:59And and it sounds like there were very few that were true to
- 23:04God, which is always the case. It's always a a remnant, a small
- 23:09number of people. And it's just like that part of
- 23:12the Bible that says narrow is the road that leads to is it
- 23:18salvation, but wide is the path that leads to destruction,
- 23:22something like that. That path is really easy to
- 23:26find, the wide path to destruction, there's a lot of
- 23:29people on it, but the narrow path, a lot of people don't find
- 23:33it. They don't surrender to God and
- 23:38you know, ask the Holy Spirit. So I will forsake my house,
- 23:44abandoned my inheritance. I will give the one I love into
- 23:50the hands of her enemies. You know, at a certain point, I
- 23:53mean, this could be these are consequences.
- 23:55But at the same time, it's also like these people are choosing
- 24:01the enemy over God. They're choosing idolatry.
- 24:05They're choosing a false God against the real one true God,
- 24:10and they're worshipping it, this other thing rather than the true
- 24:16God. And at some point God does turn
- 24:19people over. When when people keep rebelling
- 24:23and keep turning from God despite all of these times that
- 24:27God tries to reach someone, at some point, God has shown in the
- 24:34biblical history that he turns them over to what they desire.
- 24:39So people get what they what they want.
- 24:43I don't know if they really want it when they see what they
- 24:45finally get. But he there's all these
- 24:47warnings that people don't listen to prophets and people
- 24:51just continue to do whatever they want to do and they think
- 24:55that nothing is going to happen to us.
- 24:56That's the same thing these people in Judah were saying so.
- 25:16Sorry, I obviously have a cold. Continuing on.
- 25:21Sorry about that. My inheritance has become to me
- 25:27like a lion in the forest. She roars at me, therefore I
- 25:31hate her. Has has not my inheritance
- 25:37become to me like a speckled bird of prey that other birds of
- 25:41prey surround and attack? Go and gather all the wild
- 25:46beasts, bring them to devour. Many shepherds will ruin my
- 25:51vineyard and trample down my field.
- 25:54They will turn my pleasant field into a desolate wasteland.
- 25:58It will be made a wasteland parched and desolate.
- 26:01Before me. The whole land will be laid
- 26:03waste because there is no one who cares.
- 26:07Over the barren heights in the desert, destroyers will swarm,
- 26:11for the sword of the Lord will devour from one end of the land
- 26:17to the other. No one will be safe.
- 26:21They will sow wheat but reap thorns.
- 26:25They will wear themselves out but gain nothing.
- 26:28They will bear the shame of their harvest because the Lord's
- 26:31fierce anger. This is what the Lord says.
- 26:35As for all my wicked neighbors who seize the inheritance I gave
- 26:39my people Israel, I will uproot them from their lands, and I
- 26:43will uproot the people of Judah from among them.
- 26:46But after I uproot them, I will again have compassion.
- 26:53I will bring each of them back to their own inheritance and
- 26:56their own country. And if they learn well the ways
- 27:00of my people and swear by my name, saying as surely as the
- 27:03Lord lives, even as they once taught my people to swear by
- 27:08Baal, then they will be established among my people.
- 27:15But if any nation does not listen, I will completely uproot
- 27:19and destroy it, declares the Lord.
- 27:22So this is more or less a message to repent or perish.
- 27:29It'll be destruction if we don't heed the words, if we don't
- 27:33listen to what God says. We can only expect judgement.
- 27:39And, and if it's really bad, then you know, it's at, if it's
- 27:43at the time of judgement, we're going to be either eternally
