- 0:00Hey everyone, it's friendly. Welcome back to another episode
- 0:04on In the Stillness I. Hope you.
- 0:06All had a wonderful weekend. I did not have as much time to
- 0:10record this weekend, but I'm circling back to my notes for my
- 0:14quiet time as I finished out Second Thessalonians.
- 0:17And it's honestly been super refreshing to go back to reread
- 0:21things. And it kind of feels bittersweet
- 0:24to be closing it out because I think it's been such a grounding
- 0:28refining study and it's been cool.
- 0:31To see how. Then Paul was calling believers
- 0:35to stand firm and reminding them that it's not just in their.
- 0:39Belief but. Demonstrated in how they
- 0:41actually. Lived it.
- 0:43And I think it was such a great application for.
- 0:45Us today, so today. We're going to be going through
- 0:49Second Thessalonians Three and we're going to start.
- 0:53In verse. 6 and just close. It out.
- 0:55So I'm going to unpack some. Practical takeaways.
- 0:59That really challenged me in my quiet time then, especially
- 1:03around our. Habits.
- 1:04Our purpose? And.
- 1:06Really. The people.
- 1:07That we surround ourselves. With So with that, let's.
- 1:11Go ahead and get started reading, starting in verse. 6.
- 1:16In the name of the Lord. Jesus Christ.
- 1:18We command you, brothers and sisters.
- 1:20To keep. Away from.
- 1:22Every believer who is. Idle and disruptive and does
- 1:25not. Live according.
- 1:26To the teaching you. Received from us for you.
- 1:30Yourselves know how. You ought to follow our.
- 1:32Example. We were not idle when we were
- 1:35with you, nor did we eat anyone's food without paying for
- 1:39it. On the contrary, we worked night
- 1:41and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to
- 1:46any of you. We did this not because we did
- 1:49not have. The right to such help.
- 1:51But in order. To offer.
- 1:52Ourselves as a model for you to imitate for even when we were
- 1:56with. You we gave you this rule.
- 1:58The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.
- 2:02We hear that some among you are idle and disruptive.
- 2:06They are. Not busy, they are busy bodies
- 2:09such. People we command and urge in
- 2:11the Lord. Jesus Christ.
- 2:13To settle down and earn the food they eat.
- 2:16And As for you? Brothers and sisters.
- 2:18Never tire of doing what is good.
- 2:21Take special note of anyone who does not obey our instruction in
- 2:25this letter. Do not associate with them in
- 2:28order that they may feel ashamed.
- 2:30Yet do not regard them as an enemy, but warn them as you.
- 2:34Would a fellow believer? Now may the Lord of peace
- 2:38himself give you. Peace.
- 2:40At all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.
- 2:45And then he says. I Paul.
- 2:46Write this greeting in my own hand, which is the
- 2:49distinguishing mark in all my letters.
- 2:51This is how I write the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with
- 2:55you all. All right, so that is the.
- 2:58Closing of Second Thessalonians and of course there are so many
- 3:03different. Routes that we could go to
- 3:06unpack all of this but. 1st I want to start with.
- 3:10Evaluating our circles, Who are you?
- 3:14Becoming. Paul says in verse 6 to keep.
- 3:18Away from. Every believer who is.
- 3:20Idle and disruptive, and that's pretty direct.
- 3:24That's not casual. It's intentional on his part,
- 3:28and it challenged me to just think back to my circle.
- 3:32Because who you? Surround yourself with.
- 3:35Will shape. Who you become?
- 3:38So. Instead of just asking.
- 3:40Are these good people? I think a better.
- 3:43Filter for this is. Are they?
- 3:46Healthy physically. Mentally and spiritually analyze
- 3:50the mind, body and. Spirit aspects.
- 3:53Are they stewarding their bodies well?
- 3:56Are they grounded and disciplined and growing?
- 3:59Do they genuinely pursue God? Do they have drive?
- 4:03Do they have pure motives? Like is their greatest desire to
- 4:08love. Obey and serve the.
- 4:11Lord. Because when that is the center.
- 4:15Of their life. Everything else tends to fall
- 4:18into alignment. No, it's not going to be
- 4:20perfect. We're human, but.
- 4:22That is your. Anchor and so.
- 4:25That is. Super important to look at,
- 4:27Scripture says in First Corinthians 15 verse. 33.
- 4:31Bad company corrupts. Good character so.
- 4:35Here's a few things to sit with. Who is?
- 4:37Shaping my daily life and are those people pulling me?
- 4:41Toward God. Or away from God?
- 4:45And honestly, would someone grow closer?
- 4:48To God. By being close to me secondly.
- 4:53Paul addresses. Idleness, and I think this is
- 4:56where we have to distinguish something important.
- 5:00Rest is biblical. Laziness is not.
- 5:04Ecclesiastes chapter 3 goes. Into talking about how.
- 5:08There. Is a time and a season for
- 5:10everything. There's a time to work.
- 5:13There's a time to. Rest there's.
- 5:14Even a time to enjoy what you've been given the.
- 5:18Profit the harvest, so the. Goal is not to be constantly
- 5:22busy. The goal is to be intentional.
- 5:26Paul even says in verse 10 the one who is unwilling to.
- 5:29Work shall. Not eat and what stood out to me
- 5:33is that Paul did not just. Teach this he actually lived it.
- 5:38In his actions, in his own work. He structured his life above
- 5:43reproach, above average he was. Disciplined, and he was even.
- 5:48Sacrificial so that he could set the.
- 5:52Clearest example. For these believers, he.
- 5:55Did not just coast along or. Settle so.
- 5:58That made me reflect. Am I living with intention or am
- 6:04I just reacting to how? I feel each day.
- 6:07What friendly wants to? Do or.
- 6:09What is going to? Glorify God.
- 6:11Do I know when it's time to rest and when it's time to step up
- 6:17and work? We see.
- 6:19Colossians 3, verse 23. Says whatever you do, work at it
- 6:24with all your. Heart as working for the Lord.
- 6:29Now let's move into checking our intentions.
- 6:34This can be. Just kind of a little bit gut.
- 6:37Wrenching. Because it's real, but.
- 6:40Something that I wrote in my notes was this question am I
- 6:45doing? This because I feel like it, or
- 6:48because it glorifies God Because.
- 6:51Feelings are inconsistent, but Our Calling and our purpose is
- 6:55not. Proverbs 16 verse 2 says All a
- 6:59person's ways seem pure to them, but motives?
- 7:03Are weighed by the Lord. And deep down, we.
- 7:07Have God's word, we have His Holy Spirit.
- 7:10Within us, if you're a Christian and we usually know what we.
- 7:14Ought to do so. I.
- 7:17Believe the question comes down. To whether?
- 7:20We are willing to follow through on it.
- 7:23So ask yourself what is actually?
- 7:25Driving my decisions and choices right now in my day-to-day.
- 7:31And if no one saw this. But God would I still do.
- 7:34It the same way. Because he sees.
- 7:37All and you're going to have to answer to him one day, the
- 7:42ultimate judge on judgement day now also I think it's important
- 7:49to go into. How we steward our life well.
- 7:52And not just. Stay busy because Paul addresses
- 7:56busy bodies which. Is so interesting because it's
- 8:01not that they weren't doing nothing, they were just doing
- 8:04the wrong things, and I think that can hit today more than
- 8:08ever. At least.
- 8:09It did for me. Because it is so easy to be
- 8:12busy. But not productive.
- 8:15You can be active. But it can be without purpose.
- 8:19So this is. What I wrote down in my notes.
- 8:23We are called to leverage our. Time, talent, and treasure in a
- 8:28way that honors God. Y'all we were not created.
- 8:32To live passive or average lives first, Peter.
- 8:37Two verse 9 says. We are.
- 8:39A chosen people. A royal priesthood.
- 8:42And we are set. Apart so.
- 8:44That means. Our lives should look different.
- 8:47This is not in a performative way.
- 8:50But it's for a purposeful. 1. So ask yourself where?
- 8:56Is my time actually going right now?
- 8:58What am I investing in and is my life producing fruit?
- 9:03Or is. It simply producing noise and
- 9:07here is where I think it can all tie.
- 9:09Together, Paul. Is connecting the dots between
- 9:12idleness and being a busy body, and a lot of the times that
- 9:17leads straight into gossip. So instead of.
- 9:20Building something meaningful. We.
- 9:23Start talking about things that. Just.
- 9:26Frankly, don't matter. So that convicted me to ask
- 9:29myself what is coming out of my mouth.
- 9:34Are my words actually? Building people up.
- 9:37Or are they? Just filling space.
- 9:41Because. Proverbs 1821 says.
- 9:44The power. Of life and death is in the
- 9:46tongue and even when we do need to correct someone, if there is
- 9:52an open rebuke, it should come from love, not from pride,
- 9:59Galatians, 61 says. To restore others.
- 10:01Gently. So it's not about staying
- 10:05silent. It is.
- 10:06About speaking with intention and really reflecting on why am
- 10:12I saying what I'm saying right now, and also learning how to be
- 10:16quick to listen, to be more thoughtful.
- 10:18With our words. And the standard for.
- 10:22All of this what? It all comes down.
- 10:24To always is Jesus y'all we have to follow.
- 10:30His example in order to be balanced and be LED.
- 10:35Jesus served people. He showed up.
- 10:37He worked with purpose. But he also stepped away to
- 10:41rest. To spend time with his father.
- 10:44Intimate time. Just.
- 10:46Him and his father it wasn't with.
- 10:48Other people. He also was not rushed, he was
- 10:52not distracted. But he was led.
- 10:56And so that is. The kind of life that I pray I
- 11:00live every day. Again, it's not going.
- 11:03To be perfect, but. It's not meant to.
- 11:06Be idle, chaotic rather. It's meant to be aligned and I
- 11:12want to live a life that knows when to pour out and when to be.
- 11:16Filled back up. So I know that that's a.
- 11:19Lot to just. Think about.
- 11:22There's a. Lot of different questions that
- 11:23I asked myself and that y'all can think about.
- 11:27But. I want to go to move into prayer
- 11:29and. Just reflect.
- 11:31On how? As we close out. 2nd
- 11:34Thessalonians. How this is?
- 11:38An applicable reminder to stand firm and to really.
- 11:43Take this truth. And put it into action and to.
- 11:47Evaluate what? Kind of life are we living?
- 11:51Are we doing it with intention? With purpose or are.
- 11:54We just going through the motions.
- 11:57So heavenly. Father, we come to you right now
- 12:01and we just thank you. For your.
- 12:03Word and. How it?
- 12:06Both challenges us and refines us.
- 12:10I pray that you would. Give us more wisdom, more
- 12:13discernment, especially in the people that we surround
- 12:17ourselves with, in the way that we spend our time, and
- 12:22ultimately the motives behind. What we do?
- 12:26And how we do things. Teach us to live with purpose,
- 12:31to work with. Excellence and to even rest with
- 12:35intention. God, may our hearts be aligned
- 12:39with yours. Help us to radiate you, Jesus.
- 12:46Not just in what we. Say but.
- 12:48Truly in how we live and as we step into what you have next.
- 12:54Whether that is today or. The next week, the next month.
- 12:58Would you help us to carry these truths with us?
- 13:02To walk in discipline and to live.
- 13:04Set apart for your glory to be revealed through us.
- 13:08We love you. We praise you today.
- 13:11And we ask this in Jesus name, Amen.
- 13:15OK y'all, well I hope that y'all enjoyed.
- 13:18Going through Second Thessalonians with me, I
- 13:21definitely had such a good time just learning new things and.
- 13:25It was. So refreshing to come back
- 13:27circle. Back to what the Lord taught me.
- 13:29This weekend and I'm praying for y'all as you enter a new week.
- 13:33That you would. Just be more aware of the Spirit
- 13:36and that the Lord's goodness and mercy would follow.
- 13:40You everywhere you go. I'll see y'all in the next
- 13:42episode.
