- 0:18Even if you're a regular at the Ivy Room, a down home
- 0:21music venue and East Bay Institution, it isn't the type of place
- 0:24you're expected to know anyone's last name, or first name for that
- 0:27matter When I visited on a recent Friday, a man called Cupcake
- 0:31checked my ID at the door, and a bartender known as Chaos
- 0:34served me drinks. After eighty six years of welcoming fans, no matter
- 0:39their identity or taste in music, things like government names start to
- 0:43feel unnecessary. Located on San Pablo Avenue in Tiny Albany, the Ivy
- 0:48Room boasts all the charm and neighborly vibes that a small town
- 0:51bar should. The venue consists of just one room with a bar
- 0:54and a few stools on one side and the stage, audience area
- 0:57and sound booth On
- 0:58the other. The building has few windows, so even with walls full
- 1:01of concert posters, and a few couches in the back, the venue
- 1:05resembles a black box theater. This only serves to heighten each concert's
- 1:10intensity, with the audience feeling like they're practically on stage with the
- 1:14performers. On the night I visited, Tammy's Camaro, a local band made
- 1:19up of Bay Area dads, covered the like of Linda Ronstadt and
- 1:22Bruce Springsteen while the audience, mostly the band's friends and family, danced
- 1:27below. As the band gave it one hundred and ten percent on
- 1:30stage, a number of twenty somethings, friends of the lead singer's daughter,
- 1:34sipped IPAs and bobbed their heads along. The scene felt like a
- 1:38PSA for keeping small venues like the Ivy Room alive. Sometimes you
- 1:43don't want to shell out four hundred dollars to see the latest
- 1:46chart topper at Chase Center. You just want to watch your friend's
- 1:49father belting out the lyrics to Dancing in the Dark. My favorite
- 1:54place to play in the Bay Area. The
- 1:56Ivy Room was founded in nineteen forty, making it the second oldest
- 2:00bar in Albany behind the Hotsitatsi. The venue predates Interstate eighty when
- 2:05San Pablo Avenue was known as Lincoln Highway and was the major
- 2:08thoroughfare connecting the East Bay. For most of its historic the Ivy
- 2:12Room's bright neon sign has stood as a recognizable landmark for generations
- 2:16of San Pablo Avenue motorists. The Ivy Room thrived as
- 2:20a neighborhood staple under the stewardship of Dotty MacBeath, but struggled after
- 2:24her family sold it in two thousand six, changing hands three times
- 2:28in nine years. Lani Torres and SummerJager took over in twenty fifteen,
- 2:33bringing some much needed continuity to the historic locale. A Bay Area
- 2:37music veteran who used to manage the Independent, Torres committed to establishing
- 2:41the Ivy Room as a premier music venue, despite its size, about
- 2:45a two hundred person capacity and location, Albani's population is less than
- 2:49twenty thousand. I think of us as a music venue like one
- 2:53hundred percent, Tora said. Torres compared the Ivy Room to its sister
- 2:58club, the recently unshuttered bottom of the hill. You don't go to
- 3:02bottom of the hill unless you go see a show. And you
- 3:04don't go to the Ivy Room unless you're going to go see
- 3:07a show, she said. With Torres at the helm, Jager left the
- 3:11business earlier this year, the
- 3:12Ivy, Room hosts between twenty two and twenty-five concerts per month, which
- 3:16run the gamut from hardcore punk to Bay Area rap to famed
- 3:20cover bands. The diminutive venue is a favorite of Green Day frontman
- 3:25Billy Joe Armstrong, with the rock star calling the Ivy Room. My
- 3:28favorite place to play in the Bay Area. It's quite the compliment
- 3:32coming from a man who is a regular at the Bay Area's
- 3:34biggest stadiums and most popular music festivals. Billy Joe's side project, the
- 3:39Cover Ups, has played the Ivy on multiple occasions. The cover ups
- 3:43have played at a number of Bay Area clubs, including San Francisco's
- 3:47Kilowatt and Berkeley's Cornerstone, in an effort to promote smaller live music
- 3:51venues. He's always been a super champion for the Ivy, Torres said.
- 3:57Armstrong grew up just fifteen minutes away from the Ivy Room, so
- 4:00it's always a family affair whenever He
- 4:02performs at the club. Torres said Armstrong's uncle is a longtime Ivy
- 4:06Room patron, as are his mother and sister. Billy Joe isn't the
- 4:10only Bay Area punk rock legend to frequent the Ivy Room. According
- 4:14to Torres, Rancid's Matt Freeman and various members of the Dead Kennedys
- 4:18have also been known to stop by, a testament to the venue's
- 4:22standing in they local music scene. A second living rooms. Literally. Cupcake,
- 4:28the door guy, resembles a sort of punk rock Santa Claus, and
- 4:31seems to know every other person who walks into the venue, adding
- 4:34a homey quality to each show. Easiest security job I've ever had,
- 4:39Cupcake said flatly, but from the sounds of it, that was a
- 4:42relatively low bar to clear. It's great. I've never been stabbed here.
- 4:46I've never been shot at here, Cupcake said. He may brush off
- 4:50they idea of getting shot at, but like his name suggests, Cupcake
- 4:53is a softie at heart. When the Ivy Room shut down during
- 4:57the pandemic, Cupcake had to avoid the area completely, because it would
- 5:00make him too emotional. I couldn't even drive through Albany without just
- 5:05effing bawling, he admitted. Because for Cupcake and his co workers, losing
- 5:10the Ivy Room would be like losing their homes. Many bars claim
- 5:13they serve as their staff and customers second living rooms. The Ivy
- 5:17Room actually is one. We moved into our van last November out
- 5:22of choice, just to be a little more free, said Chaos of
- 5:25herself and her wife. And you know, Lonnie, when that first happened
- 5:28was like you should come and use this as your living room.
- 5:31This is your space too. So sometimes we'll come. We'll just stay
- 5:35after work and watch movies. The venue staff feel so comfortable at
- 5:39the venue because they know Torres will always have their backs. The
- 5:42Ivy Room is steadfast in its commitment to providing a safe space
- 5:46for anyone to have a drink or watch a show. Of course,
- 5:49many bars would happily make similar claims, but the Ivy Room has
- 5:53proven its willingness to walk the walk. In twenty twenty five, massive
- 5:58liquor distributor Diaggio ended its sponsorship deal with San Francisco Pride in
- 6:02a move that many saw as politically motivated. Furious, the Ivy Room
- 6:06staff responded in kind. The venue started boycotting Diaggio liquors, which include
- 6:12some of the biggest alcohol brands in the world, such as Smirnov
- 6:15Vodka, Captain Morgan Rum, and Johnny Walker Whiskey. We just can't support
- 6:20a company that makes business decisions based on hatred, the Ivy Room
- 6:24said at the time. Torres hasn't relented in the year since, and
- 6:28she's got some advice for anyone frustrated with the boycott. Want something
- 6:33we don't have on the menu? You can go get it somewhere
- 6:35else, Tora said. As neighborly as shared fried chicken. It's not easy
- 6:41running a music venue in a small town like Albany. As such,
- 6:45it's imperative the Ivy Room maintains good relationships with its neighbouring small
- 6:49business. The nice thing about Albany is it seems like it is
- 6:53a little bit closer knit of a community, Chaos said. Despite its
- 6:57meager size, downtown Albany has a celebrated food and nightlife scene. The
- 7:02Ivy Room is located across the street from Michelin recognized Juanita and
- 7:06Maude and is two blocks from the Hatsi Tatsi. Michael Valadares, co
- 7:10owner of the Hatsi Tatsi, said he often sees bands coming into
- 7:13pregame and cool their nerves at the Hatsitsi before a set at
- 7:17the Ivy Room. It's very simpatico. I almost consider us sister bars,
- 7:21Valodare said. We feel really lucky to have neighbors as cool as
- 7:25the folks at the Ivy Room, Juanita and Maud General Manager Nicholas
- 7:29Danielson said in an email to S. F Gate. We often will
- 7:33get couples and small groups coming in to eat before they head
- 7:36across the street to catch the show. It's nice to have a
- 7:39hip little joint in our neck of the woods. Sometimes those friendships
- 7:43pay dividends outside of just business. When I visited the bar staff
- 7:47were chowing down on a bucket of fried chicken, courtesy of the
- 7:50club's next door neighbor picnic. It takes a village to keep an
- 7:54independent music venue alive. Budgets are tight, and turnout is unpredictable, but
- 8:00for its strongest supporters, the Ivy Room has earned a loyalty only
- 8:03achievable through eight decades. We'll never stop playing here. They'd have to
- 8:08tell us to never come again for us to never play here
- 8:10again, said Mike McLaughlin, frontman for Tammy's Camaro. They're just super great
- 8:15to work with. The sound people are great. The bartenders are great.
- 8:19Cupcake on the front door is awesome. So yeah, best bar in
- 8:22the East Bay by far.
