• 2:24
Speaker 2: Now our good friend from the city of South Charleston,
• 2:26
Speaker 2: Sean Zoniga. Good morning, sir. Welcome to the show. Good morning.
• 2:28
Speaker 5: Thanks for having me.
• 2:29
Speaker 2: Thank you for being here. Man, it is a Exciting
• 2:32
Speaker 2: time in South Charleston. We'll talk about some things going
• 2:34
Speaker 2: on at the Farmer's Market. But first, I want to
• 2:36
Speaker 2: talk about the plaza out there. What's new out there?
• 2:39
Speaker 6: Yeah, there's a lot of momentum going there right now.
• 2:41
Speaker 6: We had Seven Brew open up last week and Sketchers
• 2:44
  Speaker 6: the week before.
• 2:45
Speaker 2: Now, for those who don't know, what is Seven Brew?
• 2:46
Speaker 2: I mean, obviously, you hear brew. It's either going to
• 2:49
Speaker 2: be beer or coffee. Yeah, it's definitely coffee.
• 2:52
  Speaker 1: Okay.
• 2:53
Speaker 2: And it's very popular.
• 2:54
  Speaker 7: It is.
• 2:54
Speaker 2: It's very popular. I mean, there was a line, man,
• 2:56
Speaker 2: like you wouldn't believe.
• 2:57
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 2:58
Speaker 6: They also sell some other things like some dirty sodas,
• 3:00
Speaker 6: energy drinks, and stuff like that as well.
• 3:02
  Speaker 7: Okay.
• 3:02
Speaker 2: All right. What else was in? You said Skechers opened up.
• 3:04
  Speaker 6: Skechers opened up.
• 3:05
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 3:06
Speaker 2: Response to that has been good, I'm sure.
• 3:07
  Speaker 9: Yes.
• 3:08
  Speaker 10: Very well.
• 3:08
  Speaker 11: Yeah.
• 3:08
Speaker 2: So what's coming up on the horizon?
• 3:10
Speaker 6: So next, I think what we'll see is in November,
• 3:13
Speaker 6: I think we're going to see Mission Barbecue open up.
• 3:17
Speaker 6: And then we'll see some mothers who are currently under
• 3:19
Speaker 6: construction like Hugh Magoo's. Nothing bunk kegs. And another one
• 3:24
Speaker 6: that actually just opened, I believe, last week is pigtails
• 3:27
Speaker 6: and crew cuts. So they're officially open. And then great.
• 3:31
Speaker 2: Now, what exactly is that?
• 3:32
Speaker 6: So it's like a kid's haircut place. And they have, like,
• 3:38
Speaker 6: play areas and things like that.
• 3:39
  Speaker 12: Like Chuck E.
• 3:40
Speaker 2: Cheese for the hair cutters.
• 3:41
  Speaker 10: Yes, basically. Yeah.
• 3:43
Speaker 2: And, I mean, again, ever since everybody is– you know,
• 3:47
Speaker 2: everybody talks about Kroger out there, obviously, the massive– The Kroger.
• 3:50
Speaker 2: I was kidding your mayor long ago that said I
• 3:52
Speaker 2: think the city of South Charleston actually opened up inside Kroger.
• 3:54
Speaker 2: I think that's why they just moved everything inside there.
• 3:57
Speaker 2: But that's what everybody talks about. But with this, there's
• 3:59
Speaker 2: so many other things out there besides just Kroger.
• 4:02
Speaker 6: Yeah, there's a lot of things, too, that haven't been
• 4:04
Speaker 6: announced yet. There'll be some department stores coming and things
• 4:08
Speaker 6: like that. But we'll be making those announcements soon.
• 4:11
Speaker 2: When can we expect the next announcements to come?
• 4:13
Speaker 6: I would say maybe towards the end of the year.
• 4:16
Speaker 6: Construction on those things won't start until spring.
• 4:18
  Speaker 7: All right.
• 4:18
Speaker 2: We had a text.
• 4:19
Speaker 6: Somebody asked about Menards. Do we know when Menards is open? Yes,
• 4:21
Speaker 6: they're still coming. We can anticipate probably construction in spring
• 4:26
  Speaker 6: or summer.
• 4:27
Speaker 2: Okay. That's when the construction will begin.
• 4:28
  Speaker 5: All right.
• 4:29
Speaker 2: And then after that, the way things work now in
• 4:32
Speaker 2: any kind of construction that you're doing, whether it's residential
• 4:34
Speaker 2: or commercial, it could be a waiting game after that.
• 4:38
Speaker 2: I know the Menards down in Barbersville is just absolutely,
• 4:42
Speaker 2: I mean, you I've been in there a few times,
• 4:45
Speaker 2: and sometimes, man, you can't even move in that store.
• 4:47
Speaker 2: There's so many people. And it's a large store. And
• 4:50
Speaker 2: if you've never been to a Menards, they have a
• 4:54
Speaker 2: little bit of everything, literally. I mean, yeah, you're going
• 4:56
Speaker 2: to be able to go look at windows and doors.
• 4:58
Speaker 2: You're also going to be able to buy frozen pizzas.
• 5:00
Speaker 2: And you're also going to be able to buy home
• 5:02
Speaker 2: decor and a bunch of other stuff there.
• 5:04
  Speaker 9: Okay.
• 5:06
Speaker 2: We had a text here that said a petition for Ikea.
• 5:08
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 5:10
Speaker 2: The problem with a lot of these places, appreciate the
• 5:12
Speaker 2: text is, and I've done this for a long time,
• 5:14
Speaker 2: the problem is people say that they want things like
• 5:17
Speaker 2: that and, again, appreciate the text or they want a
• 5:20
Speaker 2: Trader Joe's. We simply don't have the population base for
• 5:24
Speaker 2: a lot of those things, not saying for all of them.
• 5:26
Speaker 2: We simply don't have the population base here in the
• 5:28
Speaker 2: Kanawha Valley for a lot of those things.
• 5:30
  Speaker 5: Correct.
• 5:30
Speaker 6: And those businesses, they have their own metrics that they
• 5:33
  Speaker 6: go by.
• 5:33
Speaker 2: And they're all different.
• 5:34
Speaker 5: And they're all different, correct.
• 5:35
Speaker 2: All right. Talking to Sean Zunna again from the city
• 5:38
Speaker 2: of South Charleston. I want to talk about the Farmer's Market.
• 5:41
Speaker 2: One of those things going on at the Farmer's Market,
• 5:43
Speaker 2: you've got a spooktacular night at the market. Friday night
• 5:46
Speaker 2: starts at 530. Talk about that.
• 5:48
Speaker 6: Yes, it's our second annual. And what you can expect
• 5:50
Speaker 6: is our truck retreat. And there's going to be a
• 5:53
Speaker 6: touch of truck with Champion Construction. We'll have all their
• 5:55
Speaker 6: construction equipment there and things like that. And then we'll
• 5:58
Speaker 6: have our popular candy drop as well. And what that is,
• 6:01
Speaker 6: is the fire department comes in, they raise the ladder
• 6:03
Speaker 6: and And we do candy drops for all age groups,
• 6:06
  Speaker 6: including adults.
• 6:07
  Speaker 5: Okay.
• 6:07
  Speaker 13: Yeah.
• 6:07
Speaker 2: And I've got the times here for that. And I
• 6:09
Speaker 2: think I got these right. Three and under, they're going
• 6:12
Speaker 2: to drop those at six. Four, ages four to seven
• 6:16
Speaker 2: at 620. Ages eight to 12 at 640. The teens
• 6:20
Speaker 2: will start at 650 and the adults will be after seven.
• 6:23
Speaker 2: So I love the fact you're doing something for the
• 6:24
  Speaker 2: adults too.
• 6:25
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 6:26
Speaker 6: Yeah, it was funny. Last year, there's a lot that
• 6:28
Speaker 6: lined up to do it. Wow, you know, it was
• 6:30
Speaker 6: great to offer it to them, too. And the whole
• 6:33
Speaker 6: concept of dropping it, you know, I mean, that's kind
• 6:35
Speaker 6: of cool. And plus, you've got the trucks, as you said,
• 6:37
Speaker 6: from the– what's the construction company?
• 6:39
  Speaker 1: Champion Construction.
• 6:40
Speaker 2: Champion Construction is going to be there, and, you know,
• 6:42
Speaker 2: you get kids. I mean, you know how we were
• 6:44
Speaker 2: when we were kids. You give us a big shiny truck,
• 6:47
Speaker 2: and we're good to go.
• 6:48
  Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
• 6:49
Speaker 2: So that is all going to be happening. This coming
• 6:52
Speaker 2: Friday night. Now, if people want to get involved in that,
• 6:56
Speaker 2: is there vendor space available? Do you have your normal
• 6:58
  Speaker 2: vendors open?
• 6:59
Speaker 6: Yeah, we still have some space available if they want
• 7:01
Speaker 6: to sign up to decorate a trunk. They can just
• 7:05
Speaker 6: email me, szuniga at citysidetrawson.com.
• 7:08
Speaker 2: And do the spelling of the last name again.
• 7:10
  Speaker 6: S-Z-U-N-I-G-A at citysidetrawson.com.
• 7:14
  Speaker 5: All right.
• 7:14
Speaker 2: I want to talk about this. You've got an event
• 7:16
Speaker 2: called the Taste of Appalachia event. Yes, that's a new
• 7:18
  Speaker 2: one this year.
• 7:19
Speaker 6: And what it is, it's a food showcase, and it's
• 7:22
Speaker 6: celebrating the creativity and craftsmanship of Western Union food producers.
• 7:27
Speaker 6: So it's a pretty neat event.
• 7:29
Speaker 2: And what time is that?
• 7:30
  Speaker 6: It's from 1 to 4.
• 7:31
  Speaker 5: 1 to 4.
• 7:31
  Speaker 9: Okay.
• 7:31
  Speaker 13: Okay.
• 7:32
Speaker 2: It should be a really, really good event out there
• 7:34
Speaker 2: at the farmer's market. Now, so what happens this time?
• 7:37
Speaker 2: I mean, this time of year, fall, and it's actually,
• 7:39
Speaker 2: as I said earlier, it's actually going to feel like
• 7:41
Speaker 2: fall by the time Saturday rolls around. What exactly– how
• 7:46
Speaker 2: do you guys transition from one season to the next?
• 7:48
Speaker 2: Because this is the fall– fall is the farmer's market time,
• 7:51
Speaker 2: that and spring, I guess, but fall especially. So what's
• 7:54
Speaker 2: the difference now, different hours, different.
• 7:56
Speaker 6: Yeah, so what we'll do is we'll finish out fall
• 7:59
Speaker 6: through the end of October, and then we'll close down
• 8:02
Speaker 6: Monday and Tuesdays and stay open Wednesday through Sunday in November.
• 8:07
Speaker 6: And then Christmas trees will come in November 28th, and
• 8:11
Speaker 6: then we'll start the Christmas market.
• 8:12
Speaker 2: Okay, and I know we'll have you on as we
• 8:15
Speaker 2: get closer to talk about that Christmas market, but it's—
• 8:17
Speaker 2: It's always very popular. What can people expect from that?
• 8:19
Speaker 2: Don't want to rush the season. I know it's still
• 8:21
Speaker 2: not even trick-or-treat time yet, but what can people expect
• 8:24
Speaker 2: at a Christmas party?
• 8:25
Speaker 6: You can definitely expect their Christmas trees back again from
• 8:27
Speaker 6: Grits Farm. And then we also have all of our
• 8:30
Speaker 6: other local vendors with crafts, the holiday crafts and the
• 8:33
Speaker 6: baked goods and all the bakers and makers as well.
• 8:37
Speaker 2: Somebody said, let's really go old school. How about a
• 8:39
Speaker 2: roller skating rink, classic arcade, and maybe a small movie theater,
• 8:42
Speaker 2: 1980s feels. Here's the thing I know about the city
• 8:45
Speaker 2: of South Charleston. You and Frank Mullins, you never say
• 8:48
Speaker 2: no to anything. You're just kind of like, okay.
• 8:51
Speaker 6: We consider it all.
• 8:52
Speaker 2: Consider it all. Somebody said, how awesome would a Malibu
• 8:55
Speaker 2: Jack's be there? Again, population. Explain, and I've talked to
• 9:01
Speaker 2: Mayor Mullins about this and some of the other mayors,
• 9:03
Speaker 2: what exactly goes into recruiting some of these stores to
• 9:07
  Speaker 2: come to them?
• 9:08
Speaker 6: Well, I can tell you that Mayor Mullins and our
• 9:11
Speaker 6: city manager, Rick Atkinson, has really been really proactive with that,
• 9:16
Speaker 6: with The developers, you know, with Rick going to Las
• 9:21
Speaker 6: Vegas and New York City.
• 9:23
Speaker 2: You got to go to them because they don't come
• 9:25
  Speaker 2: to you.
• 9:25
  Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly.
• 9:26
Speaker 6: You know, to these business seminars and really talk to
• 9:29
Speaker 6: them to let them know, you know, sell it, you know,
• 9:31
Speaker 6: sell it to them. But, you know, at the end
• 9:33
Speaker 6: of the day, you know, these businesses, they do have
• 9:35
Speaker 6: their own metrics and we have to meet that.
• 9:37
Speaker 2: And what is part of the selling process of the
• 9:39
Speaker 2: city of South Charleston to people?
• 9:42
Speaker 6: I think, you know, one of the things that I
• 9:44
Speaker 6: think that we are great about and what we take
• 9:47
Speaker 6: pride on is our community and everything that we do
• 9:50
Speaker 6: in the community, the community supports. And I think that's
• 9:53
Speaker 6: a big sell right there. And then, you know, also
• 9:56
Speaker 6: our city services and things like that.
• 9:58
  Speaker 7: But.
• 10:00
Speaker 6: They've been pretty proactive with that.
• 10:02
  Speaker 10: Okay.
• 10:03
  Speaker 7: All right.
• 10:03
Speaker 2: So let's go over again the things at the farmer's market.
• 10:06
Speaker 2: You get this spooktacular, starts at 530 on Friday evening,
• 10:10
Speaker 2: kind of It's one of the early ones, because I
• 10:12
Speaker 2: know there may have been a couple of trunk or
• 10:14
Speaker 2: treats already, but this is one of the early ones,
• 10:16
Speaker 2: kind of get people in the mood. And the fact that, again,
• 10:18
Speaker 2: that you actually drop the candy, this is not, you're
• 10:20
Speaker 2: just not going from car to car. They actually drop
• 10:23
Speaker 2: it from a fire truck. That's pretty cool stuff right there.
• 10:26
Speaker 2: It's almost like a pinata without having to hit anything.
• 10:29
Speaker 2: So that's going on. And then you have the other event, again,
• 10:32
Speaker 2: the Taste of Appalachia on Sunday. What time was that again?
• 10:35
Speaker 5: It was from 1 to 4.
• 10:36
Speaker 2: 1 to 4. And best place to find out about
• 10:38
Speaker 2: all the activities going on in the city of South Charleston.

• 14:14
Speaker 2: like fall by the time Saturday rolls around with temps
• 14:17
Speaker 2: in the mid-50s for highs. Great weather for some chilly
• 14:20
Speaker 2: in St. Albans, the annual Fall Y'all Chilly Contest, and
• 14:23
Speaker 2: more because there's more than just chilly coming to Old Main.
• 14:26
Speaker 2: Saturday starts at noon. Dave Rucker is here to talk
• 14:28
Speaker 2: about it. Good morning, sir. Welcome to the show.
• 14:30
Speaker 5: Hey, I appreciate you having me.
• 14:31
Speaker 2: Thank you for being here. How many years has this
• 14:33
  Speaker 2: been going on?
• 14:34
Speaker 5: Fall Y'all started in 2017 was the first year of it.
• 14:38
Speaker 5: Going back to then now, obviously, The COVID year was
• 14:42
Speaker 5: no festival. But other than that, we've been going along
• 14:46
Speaker 5: with it since, growing ever since. One of our biggest
• 14:49
Speaker 5: years with chili cookers this year, 24 of them.
• 14:52
Speaker 2: And here's the thing that's a little bit different about
• 14:54
Speaker 2: your chili contest, because I have judged them. I've been
• 14:58
Speaker 2: part of several in the area, still continue to do
• 15:00
Speaker 2: that from time to time when people have me. But
• 15:02
Speaker 2: yours is a little bit different as far as you
• 15:04
Speaker 2: don't have a lot of the rules and stuff.
• 15:06
Speaker 5: No rules, no regulations. I love it. And we purposefully
• 15:11
Speaker 5: like it that way. If it's green chili, white chili,
• 15:15
Speaker 5: red chili, beans, no beans, sweet, heat, whatever you prefer.
• 15:20
Speaker 5: And that way— I think that's what makes it more community.
• 15:24
  Speaker 7: Right.
• 15:24
Speaker 2: And this is not throwing off on all the other ones.
• 15:27
  Speaker 16: No, no.
• 15:27
  Speaker 5: Not at all.
• 15:28
Speaker 2: Because those are actual competitions.
• 15:29
  Speaker 8: Right.
• 15:30
Speaker 2: And if you are entering an internationally sanctioned event, you
• 15:34
Speaker 2: have certain qualifications, certain things that you have. You can't
• 15:37
Speaker 2: use certain ingredients. Everything's got to be done a certain way.
• 15:39
Speaker 2: Nothing wrong with that. There's a place for that. But
• 15:42
Speaker 2: this is a little bit different. We're more fun. They're
• 15:46
Speaker 2: more they're more structure.
• 15:47
  Speaker 10: Right.
• 15:47
Speaker 2: Well, there's big money on the line.
• 15:49
  Speaker 5: There's much.
• 15:50
  Speaker 7: Yes.
• 15:51
Speaker 5: And, you know, we have our little. But like you said,
• 15:53
Speaker 5: we our first place gets five hundred. Second place is
• 15:57
Speaker 5: three hundred. Third place, two hundred. And then the people's
• 15:59
Speaker 5: choice is one hundred. But you don't get to go
• 16:02
Speaker 5: on to the big, big money.
• 16:04
  Speaker 13: St.
• 16:04
Speaker 2: Albans is a main event here.
• 16:05
  Speaker 7: That's it.
• 16:06
  Speaker 5: That's it.
• 16:07
Speaker 2: So where does the money go that you raise?
• 16:08
Speaker 5: Police Department, K-9 unit, youth and education programs within the
• 16:12
Speaker 5: city limits of St.
• 16:13
  Speaker 6: Albans.
• 16:14
Speaker 5: Every bit of it stays within the city limits. And
• 16:17
Speaker 5: it all started when back in 2017, it all started
• 16:20
Speaker 5: as strictly the K-9 unit. That's all that it ever funded.
• 16:23
Speaker 5: As we've grown, we've taken in more. We now do
• 16:26
Speaker 5: Yak Fest and we do Train Day as an organization, St.
• 16:29
Speaker 5: Albans Fairs and Festivals. We've stuck with the K-9 unit,
• 16:34
Speaker 5: but we've also expanded out to youth and education. So,
• 16:38
Speaker 5: for example, Secret Santa, field trips, community service. I mean,
• 16:43
Speaker 5: you know, the kids do community service, help feed them,
• 16:47
Speaker 5: things like that. Education programs that just building a better,
• 16:52
Speaker 5: safer environment community in St. Albans for future. One of
• 16:56
Speaker 5: our big goals we're really working towards, we would really
• 17:00
Speaker 5: like to start a scholarship program, both a graduating senior
• 17:04
Speaker 5: going to college and a graduating senior who might be
• 17:07
Speaker 5: going to trade or technical school. So that's something we're
• 17:11
Speaker 5: working at. It's something we're trying to build to get to.
• 17:14
Speaker 5: But St. Albans, youth, safety, education.
• 17:18
  Speaker 2: And this event, I mean, I've been, I don't think
• 17:21
Speaker 2: I've been to everyone, but you said it started in 2017.
• 17:24
  Speaker 2: I mean, I wasn't exaggerating when I say it takes
• 17:27
Speaker 2: up all of old Maine and it's, it's, I mean,
• 17:30
Speaker 2: there are so many people that turn out for this thing.
• 17:33
Speaker 5: Um, we, we see it. One year we had the, the,
• 17:38
Speaker 5: the data matrix that we from cell phone pings and
• 17:42
Speaker 5: we were at 2,900 people. Um, that was by far
• 17:45
Speaker 5: our biggest year. Um, but we, we see well over
• 17:50
Speaker 5: 2000 people coming onto main street. Um, and as the
• 17:53
Speaker 5: guys who we, we do the organizing, the vendors and
• 17:56
Speaker 5: what it's becoming, we're really coming to a point where
• 17:59
Speaker 5: we're full and I'm turning vendors away. I hate that
• 18:02
Speaker 5: South Charleston fire department. I I'm so sorry, guys, I
• 18:05
Speaker 5: can't get them in as a spot and I hate it. Um,
• 18:08
Speaker 5: we have several chili cookers who want a chili booth,
• 18:10
Speaker 5: but the street is just plumb full. We've thought about
• 18:14
Speaker 5: going on to B street. Um, We've even, the consideration
• 18:18
Speaker 5: of if it was ever possible to go over onto
• 18:20
Speaker 5: the loop. Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking, is
• 18:23
Speaker 5: put it on the loop. But we have, I mean,
• 18:25
Speaker 5: it's maxed out. And we use a 15-foot space right now.
• 18:29
Speaker 5: We thought about maybe going back to a 12-foot space
• 18:32
Speaker 5: to cut the size down. You hate to give people
• 18:34
Speaker 5: a smaller booth, but we're just pulling full. And like
• 18:37
Speaker 5: I said, 24 chili cookers. We got food vendors out there.
• 18:40
Speaker 5: We got craft vendors. Really proud of, I say community
• 18:43
Speaker 5: a lot. It's my big thing. It's what we do
• 18:46
Speaker 5: is try and build community. Really proud of Hayes Middle School.
• 18:49
Speaker 5: Has five athletics teams and two just organizational, like the
• 18:56
Speaker 5: CTE and the cheerleaders and different, and volleyball, soccer, all
• 19:00
Speaker 5: of those. They're all coming out as chili contestants. So
• 19:04
Speaker 5: huge representation from the local middle school. Some of the
• 19:07
Speaker 5: businesses there coming out. I know Crafts of the Coal
• 19:10
Speaker 5: is going to have their ice cream inside, chili on
• 19:14
Speaker 5: the outside. So it really brings everybody out. I love
• 19:18
Speaker 5: seeing grandmas and grandpas and the little ones out there
• 19:22
Speaker 5: all running together. And it's chili.
• 19:24
Speaker 2: And it's always such a great event. And again, we're
• 19:27
Speaker 2: talking with Dave Rucker. It's always such a great event
• 19:29
Speaker 2: in St. Albans because... You know, you are on Old Main,
• 19:32
Speaker 2: and everybody's kind of there together, as you said. It's
• 19:35
Speaker 2: kind of like fellowshipping, and everybody hangs out. Weather is
• 19:38
Speaker 2: going to be great. I love the fact that it's
• 19:40
Speaker 2: going to be in the mid-50s, you know, because that's
• 19:42
Speaker 2: chilly weather, but it's going to be sunny. you know?
• 19:46
Speaker 2: And so, um, and so it's just the entire town
• 19:50
Speaker 2: works together with this. Several of the businesses that are
• 19:53
Speaker 2: on Old Main will be open. Uh, so chilly's not
• 19:56
Speaker 2: your thing. As you said, you're going to have food
• 19:58
Speaker 2: trucks there. A few, I mean, there'll be other, some
• 20:00
Speaker 2: of the restaurants I'm sure will be open so you
• 20:02
Speaker 2: can go in there and grab something.
• 20:03
  Speaker 13: Certainly.
• 20:04
Speaker 5: And, and live music. We have, uh, uh, Three bands
• 20:08
Speaker 5: are playing. We have the Daniel Farrell Trio to start
• 20:11
Speaker 5: things out, Adam Parker and the Bourbon Cowboys, and then
• 20:14
Speaker 5: Fleetwoods Heart. Again, look at them, all local. Most of
• 20:19
Speaker 5: them have St. Albans ties, direct St. Albans ties, current
• 20:23
  Speaker 5: or previous.
• 20:24
Speaker 2: And I'm going to guess by the name Fleetwoods Heart
• 20:25
Speaker 2: that you're going to be a little Fleetwood Mac and
• 20:27
Speaker 2: a little heart thrown in there.
• 20:28
Speaker 5: That's right. And that's exactly, you nailed it. And again,
• 20:33
Speaker 5: some St. Albans hometown folks in that organization there coming
• 20:36
Speaker 5: to– take the stage. Um, and again, I'll recognize Hayes
• 20:41
Speaker 5: middle school community. We start out at noon, um, recognizing
• 20:45
Speaker 5: the kids who achieved mastery on the standardized test last year.
• 20:49
Speaker 5: So we call it mastery on main street. Um, the,
• 20:52
Speaker 5: everybody from elementary school all the way up to the
• 20:55
Speaker 5: high school, not just Hayes, um, all of them, we
• 20:58
Speaker 5: call them across the elementary elementary schools in alphabetical order.
• 21:02
Speaker 5: They all get to come up the little ones, you know,
• 21:04
Speaker 5: excited as they are. Um, get their picture taken on
• 21:07
Speaker 5: stage on all the signs, make them feel.
• 21:10
Speaker 2: The star of the show. I was there for that
• 21:13
Speaker 2: last year. And I think, uh, Steve Hannibal, uh, from
• 21:15
Speaker 2: our sister station, 98, seven amounts of wild and wonderful
• 21:17
Speaker 2: classic rock was there. And I love the fact that
• 21:19
Speaker 2: we put Steve on stage with these kids. So that,
• 21:22
Speaker 2: that way we can say kids, if you don't do
• 21:24
Speaker 2: your homework. If you don't study hard, you're going to
• 21:27
Speaker 2: be just like Steve Animal.
• 21:28
  Speaker 7: Right.
• 21:29
Speaker 2: So that's like– and the kids are like.
• 21:31
Speaker 5: The carrot or the stick.
• 21:32
  Speaker 10: Yeah.
• 21:33
Speaker 2: Oh, crap. I got to get this gear. I want
• 21:35
Speaker 2: to end up being a loudmouth rock and roll.
• 21:37
Speaker 5: That's right. And I love that they get to come
• 21:39
Speaker 5: out there and be that star.
• 21:40
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 21:40
Speaker 5: It's good stuff. And they love it. As a teacher,
• 21:43
Speaker 5: as the teacher in me, I see the kids– the
• 21:46
Speaker 5: following week and they're like they're all excited.
• 21:48
Speaker 2: About it so good stuff.
• 21:49
Speaker 5: It's enjoyable to to be able to bring it and
• 21:51
Speaker 5: then as the kid in me i say that you
• 21:54
Speaker 5: know i go out and like i said i see
• 21:56
Speaker 5: guys or girls that i've graduated high school with from
• 21:59
Speaker 5: way back in 02 that i haven't seen way back
• 22:01
Speaker 5: in 02 he said it's way back to me okay
• 22:04
Speaker 5: um but uh you know we haven't seen him in
• 22:07
Speaker 5: a while so you get to see him and then
• 22:09
Speaker 5: like i said even their parents and and folks who
• 22:12
Speaker 5: Maybe you only see them once a year at Yak
• 22:15
Speaker 5: Fest or at Fall Y'all Chili Cook-Off. So it's enjoyable.
• 22:19
Speaker 5: It's a great time. And then raffles. We have several
• 22:22
Speaker 5: raffles going on. Thank you to Mardi Gras Casino for
• 22:25
Speaker 5: a night stay, casino bucks, and restaurant money. Thank you
• 22:30
Speaker 5: to John's Cyclery, getting into that health and physical activity,
• 22:34
Speaker 5: donating $ 800 towards any merchandise there at John's Cyclery in St.
• 22:39
Speaker 5: Albans and Scary Creek Tactical. always assisting with our raffles
• 22:43
Speaker 5: over on 817 with your home and defense needs that
• 22:46
Speaker 5: you got there. So all those raffles going on will
• 22:50
Speaker 5: also be given away. We have partners that have, you know,
• 22:54
Speaker 5: given things in the past. We have one of the
• 22:56
Speaker 5: gas heaters, you know, fall time. Nice heater to warm
• 23:00
Speaker 5: yourself up at as you're out there making your own
• 23:03
Speaker 5: chili recipe for next year.
• 23:05
Speaker 2: So let me ask you personally, okay, are you a
• 23:07
  Speaker 2: chili guy?
• 23:08
  Speaker 5: I love it.
• 23:09
Speaker 2: Okay, so what constitutes a good chili? And you're not
• 23:12
Speaker 2: going to be judging, by the way.
• 23:13
Speaker 5: I do not judge. I'm the luckiest man there. I
• 23:15
Speaker 5: get to taste them all, and I don't have to
• 23:17
Speaker 5: judge any of them.
• 23:18
Speaker 2: There you go. What to you makes a good chili?
• 23:20
Speaker 2: And there's no right or wrong answer, just for you.
• 23:22
Speaker 5: I like the sweet to start and the heat to
• 23:27
Speaker 5: follow up. I like the beans. I like a meaty chili.
• 23:32
  Speaker 5: I don't want runny. I like it, you know, I
• 23:37
Speaker 5: want to be filled up. Mm-hmm. But I do want
• 23:39
Speaker 5: to sweat a little bit.
• 23:40
  Speaker 2: Okay.
• 23:41
Speaker 5: I like that sweet flavor.
• 23:43
Speaker 2: That's pretty much my wife makes a chipotle chili.
• 23:46
  Speaker 8: Okay.
• 23:46
Speaker 2: And she just did that over the weekend on Sunday.
• 23:48
Speaker 2: And it's really good.
• 23:50
Speaker 5: That's my dad always. God rest his soul. He always
• 23:52
Speaker 5: made a good chili. And I tell you, I think
• 23:55
Speaker 5: the trick to it, and that's why I think the
• 23:57
Speaker 5: chili recipes at the chili cook-offs a lot of time
• 24:01
Speaker 5: can be good, is he always made it the day before.
• 24:03
Speaker 5: It stewed for a long time. And that's where I
• 24:06
Speaker 5: think that sweet and heat come in, you know.
• 24:09
Speaker 2: And you have a lot of different chilies to try.
• 24:11
Speaker 2: But let me say one.
• 24:14
Speaker 5: I do have to admit, last year, and I can't
• 24:17
Speaker 5: remember who it was, there was a white chicken chili
• 24:20
Speaker 5: that was phenomenal. And I'm not usually that guy, but
• 24:25
Speaker 5: it was like, hmm, now this is some good meal
• 24:27
  Speaker 5: right here.
• 24:28
Speaker 2: Look, I'm by chili like I am by pizza or
• 24:31
Speaker 2: hot dogs. There's things I like better than others, but
• 24:33
Speaker 2: there's really no good or bad. You give me the
• 24:35
Speaker 2: green chili, give me the white chili. I like it all.
• 24:37
Speaker 5: I'm with you. I like it all.
• 24:38
Speaker 2: But I definitely want the heat with mine. But I
• 24:40
Speaker 2: will say, I think one of the biggest misconceptions, and
• 24:43
Speaker 2: it's all in the taste buds.
• 24:44
  Speaker 5: I get that.
• 24:45
Speaker 2: People think that it has to be the hotter, the better.
• 24:48
Speaker 2: And I think it's all about the flavor. If it
• 24:50
Speaker 2: has a little bit of heat, but the heat is
• 24:53
Speaker 2: not overpowering, like Carolina Reaper overpowering, then the flavor is
• 24:58
Speaker 2: what really matters. Now, I prefer mine with some heat.
• 25:01
Speaker 2: I might add a little hot sauce to mine because
• 25:02
  Speaker 2: I'm that guy.
• 25:03
Speaker 5: And that's all right.
• 25:04
Speaker 2: But also add a little sour cream to it too.
• 25:06
Speaker 5: And I'm the cheese guy.
• 25:07
Speaker 2: I like sour cream cheese and I don't do crackers.
• 25:09
Speaker 2: I like tortilla chips.
• 25:10
Speaker 5: We like to eat, don't we?
• 25:11
Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm a fan. Dave, I started to eat when
• 25:14
Speaker 2: I was real young.
• 25:15
  Speaker 1: Me too.
• 25:15
Speaker 2: And I just never got out of the habit.
• 25:17
  Speaker 7: No.
• 25:17
Speaker 5: You know that I feel fit when they didn't let
• 25:19
  Speaker 5: me do it.
• 25:19
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 25:20
  Speaker 5: All right.
• 25:20
Speaker 2: So you talked about the vendors. Are you pretty much
• 25:24
Speaker 2: out of space at this point with the vendors?
• 25:25
Speaker 5: Certainly out of space. Unfortunately, I have several vendors that
• 25:30
Speaker 5: are on wait lists that are, I'm really, I mentioned
• 25:34
Speaker 5: South Charleston fire department. I hate that. I can't get
• 25:36
Speaker 5: those guys in there. One of our most fun booths
• 25:38
Speaker 5: that we have, but we just, they got a late
• 25:41
Speaker 5: application in and we just, I can't fit them in. So, um,
• 25:45
Speaker 5: if anything, if we have any cancellations between now, it
• 25:48
Speaker 5: does happen. It does. Um, it, it does. Somebody comes
• 25:52
Speaker 5: up and says, Hey, sickness can't do or whatever. If
• 25:55
Speaker 5: I have any cancellations, I do have the wait list,
• 25:57
Speaker 5: and I will reach out to them in the order
• 26:00
Speaker 5: of which they applied. And that would be last minute,
• 26:03
Speaker 5: but we try and make sure we have a full street.
• 26:06
Speaker 5: I'll call you Saturday morning and say, hey, I got
• 26:08
Speaker 5: one vacant. You want to come on?
• 26:11
Speaker 2: And one of the great things about this, and I'm
• 26:12
Speaker 2: going to talk about the ticketing here momentarily, but one
• 26:14
Speaker 2: of the great things about it is if you just
• 26:16
Speaker 2: want to come out and see the kids, take part
• 26:20
Speaker 2: in the games, the giveaways, you know, enjoy the music,
• 26:24
  Speaker 2: there's not a charge.
• 26:24
Speaker 5: Not a bit. Come enjoy the environment.
• 26:27
Speaker 2: You can just come and hang out. Breathe the air.
• 26:29
Speaker 2: What about breathing the air after everybody's had chili? But anyway,
• 26:32
  Speaker 2: it's another point.
• 26:32
  Speaker 5: Good point.
• 26:33
Speaker 2: How does the ticketing work?
• 26:35
Speaker 5: So, again, you don't have to buy anything. If you
• 26:38
Speaker 5: want to just come walk it, come walk it. It's
• 26:40
Speaker 5: going to be quite tempting with all that chili in
• 26:43
Speaker 5: the air. But $ 1 a ticket if you want to
• 26:46
Speaker 5: go that route. Now, you don't get any voting that way.
• 26:49
Speaker 5: When you do that, we have a $ 10 route and
• 26:50
  Speaker 5: a $ 20 route. $ 10 will get you 12 tickets. That's
• 26:52
Speaker 5: going to Half the vendors, half the chili vendors.
• 26:58
Speaker 2: So you've got to choose wisely.
• 26:59
Speaker 5: You do. And you'll get two voting chips with the $ 10.
• 27:04
  Speaker 5: So you are a people's choice voter. There's a bucket.
• 27:07
Speaker 5: So you become one of the community judges at that point.
• 27:11
Speaker 5: And then the $ 20, you get a little extra. You
• 27:14
Speaker 5: get 25 tickets for the $ 20. So with that, you
• 27:19
Speaker 5: can taste all of the vendors at the $ 20, all
• 27:22
Speaker 5: the chili cookers at the $ 20 rate. plus one, plus
• 27:26
Speaker 5: one extra, who your favorite, go back and throw them
• 27:28
Speaker 5: your chips. And with the $ 20, you get four voting chips.
• 27:33
Speaker 2: You remember off the top of your head who won
• 27:34
Speaker 2: last year, who some of the winners were?
• 27:36
Speaker 5: The St. Albans Police Department was the winner of the
• 27:42
Speaker 5: People's Choice. Right. I cannot remember off the top of
• 27:46
Speaker 5: my head. First choice collision out of Nitro, I think,
• 27:50
  Speaker 5: was the.
• 27:51
Speaker 2: First class collision. First class collision.
• 27:53
  Speaker 5: I'm sorry.
• 27:53
Speaker 2: Good advertiser of ours over on 98th Street of the Mountain.
• 27:56
Speaker 5: Out of Nitro was the judging winner, I believe. I'll
• 28:03
Speaker 5: tell you a funny story. We got accused one time.
• 28:05
Speaker 5: We've changed our voting system. I see you get chips now.
• 28:08
Speaker 5: We used to use dog bones because we've always been
• 28:10
Speaker 5: about the K-9 dog. Arco, now Bonnie. But they accused it.
• 28:17
Speaker 5: They accused us of a cheating and going and buying
• 28:19
Speaker 5: the dog bones. The police department was cheating and going
• 28:23
Speaker 5: and buying dog bones. We went and printed up our
• 28:25
Speaker 5: own fall y'all poker chips and our own logo. Now
• 28:28
Speaker 5: we collect them back at the end. Okay, all right.
• 28:31
Speaker 5: Zero questions asked. Zero questions asked. It's a very fair system,
• 28:35
Speaker 5: and the judges do a blind. You've seen the judges
• 28:38
Speaker 5: do a blind judging. They have no idea whose chili
• 28:41
  Speaker 5: they're tasting.
• 28:42
Speaker 2: The way that it worked last year, and I'm going
• 28:44
Speaker 2: to be there. I'm not judging this year, but I'm
• 28:45
Speaker 2: going to be there just to kind of help you
• 28:46
Speaker 2: out a little bit. Um, they go inside, at least
• 28:49
Speaker 2: they did last year. They actually went the same way.
• 28:51
Speaker 2: They went inside the Auburn theater, uh, the Auburn art center.
• 28:53
  Speaker 7: Yep.
• 28:54
Speaker 2: They're an old main close to the public.
• 28:56
  Speaker 5: Yep.
• 28:56
Speaker 2: And all you get is a number. You don't get
• 28:58
Speaker 2: a name or whatever, uh, and a sheet. And you
• 29:01
Speaker 2: have a number. This is number one. And you can
• 29:03
Speaker 2: make comments and say, this one needed a little salt.
• 29:06
Speaker 2: This one, too much salt, this one, whatever. And the
• 29:08
Speaker 2: judge is, They will talk to each other sometimes, but
• 29:12
Speaker 2: it doesn't, if you like one and I like one,
• 29:15
Speaker 2: we don't necessarily try to persuade, try to persuade in
• 29:18
Speaker 2: any way, you know? So we just want to make
• 29:20
Speaker 2: sure everybody realizes that.
• 29:21
  Speaker 5: And it's a great time to, I love it. I'm, I'm,
• 29:24
Speaker 5: myself and adam oversee the judging and and we just
• 29:27
Speaker 5: sit and watch y'all carry on and taste it's a
• 29:30
  Speaker 5: great time.
• 29:31
Speaker 2: Well last year we had quite the lineup because we
• 29:33
Speaker 2: had i think the principal of St. Albans High School
• 29:35
  Speaker 2: was there.
• 29:36
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 29:36
Speaker 2: We had Jay Silverman from Have Fun.
• 29:40
Speaker 5: Jay is our annual foodie judge.
• 29:43
  Speaker 12: Yeah.
• 29:43
Speaker 5: Jay's with us every year.
• 29:44
  Speaker 6: Right, right.
• 29:45
Speaker 2: I think Shockley from 98.7 The Mountain was there. Marilee McCullough.
• 29:48
Speaker 5: It was Brian Hughes is who it was.
• 29:50
Speaker 2: Oh, that's right. Yeah, he wasn't part of our team then.
• 29:51
  Speaker 13: He was, okay.
• 29:52
Speaker 2: That's right, it was Brian Hughes. That's who it was.
• 29:55
Speaker 2: And also Marilee McCullough from WWK was there last year.
• 29:58
Speaker 2: So- It's always a good time. We had a couple
• 30:02
Speaker 2: questions here. What about possibly moving it to the football field?
• 30:08
  Speaker 2: I'll say this while you're thinking. That's not a bad
• 30:13
Speaker 2: idea at all. However, you are in the middle of
• 30:14
Speaker 2: football season, and football coaches and administrations don't particularly like.
• 30:18
Speaker 5: That's going to be very true.
• 30:20
Speaker 2: When you're messing with their facilities, their profit field.
• 30:22
Speaker 5: That's going to be very true.
• 30:23
Speaker 2: And also, you've got to go through a whole lot
• 30:25
Speaker 2: of other stuff when you have it.
• 30:27
  Speaker 5: Kanawha County Schools.
• 30:28
Speaker 2: And they're wonderful to deal with.
• 30:30
  Speaker 17: Yes, yes.
• 30:31
Speaker 5: It's just– I had a vendor who was– they were
• 30:35
Speaker 5: amazed at how much went into the chili cook-off. And
• 30:38
Speaker 5: I said, we have to deal with– government agencies and
• 30:42
Speaker 5: insurances and so it would just be another layer that
• 30:46
Speaker 5: nothing wrong with that you know they're great to work with.
• 30:49
Speaker 2: Possibly exploring it at some point yeah but again I
• 30:51
Speaker 2: think the idea too is to try to get people
• 30:53
Speaker 2: to Old Main it is try to get people to
• 30:56
Speaker 2: come down there and go in the businesses and see
• 30:57
Speaker 2: what St. Albans has to offer there and and all
• 30:59
  Speaker 2: of St.
• 30:59
Speaker 5: Albans but That central location.
• 31:06
Speaker 2: But another text says, do you all need any type
• 31:08
Speaker 2: of donations for the actual canine dogs, like blankets or
• 31:10
Speaker 2: food or anything like that?
• 31:13
Speaker 5: We would always love to have those. If anybody could reach,
• 31:16
Speaker 5: they want to reach out to us on Facebook at St.
• 31:19
Speaker 5: Albans Fairs and Festivals or at Fall Y'all Festival Chili
• 31:23
Speaker 5: Cook-Off at Facebook. Um, we would love to do that.
• 31:27
Speaker 5: I do have to give some credit and recognition. We
• 31:29
Speaker 5: have awesome sponsors. So like for the food tractor supply
• 31:33
Speaker 5: actually is a, is an in-kind annual and has been
• 31:36
Speaker 5: for a long time. They supply all of Bonnie's food. Um,
• 31:39
Speaker 5: so they're great to work with. Um, but there are
• 31:44
Speaker 5: things of course. You know, we always have these dogs
• 31:48
Speaker 5: are dogs that now they're professional dogs, but they still
• 31:52
Speaker 5: have a home life as well. So they get Kong
• 31:55
Speaker 5: balls and they a lot of those times the Kong balls,
• 31:58
Speaker 5: their training tools. So, yes, we certainly the dogs could
• 32:03
Speaker 5: always use those donations. If you could reach out to
• 32:06
Speaker 5: us or the St. Albans Police Department canine unit, of course,
• 32:10
Speaker 5: or the St. Albans Police Department, you can reach out
• 32:12
Speaker 5: to them. Or like I said, St. Albans Fairs and
• 32:15
Speaker 5: Festivals is our organizational entity that does Yak Fest, Train Day,
• 32:19
Speaker 5: and Fall Y'all and the Dog Bowl fundraiser. But you
• 32:22
Speaker 5: can reach out to us on the Fall Y'all Chili
• 32:26
Speaker 5: Cook-Off Facebook as well.
• 32:28
  Speaker 7: All right.
• 32:28
Speaker 2: Again, it all starts at noon on Old Main and St.
• 32:30
  Speaker 8: Albans.
• 32:31
Speaker 2: It's going to feel like fall. Brian says temperatures are
• 32:33
Speaker 2: going to be in the mid-50s.
• 32:33
Speaker 5: It's going to be awesome.
• 32:34
Speaker 2: But it's going to be sunny. So come on out
• 32:37
Speaker 2: there and enjoy some chili, enjoy some music, win some prizes.
• 32:40
Speaker 2: and just have a great time, as my dad used
• 32:42
Speaker 2: to say in the church, fellowshiping one with the other.
• 32:44
Speaker 2: Come on out there and join us. It's going to
• 32:45
Speaker 2: be great. Sunday at noon, we'll be there. Several of
• 32:48
Speaker 2: the folks from the stations will be there, so we're
• 32:50
Speaker 2: looking forward to seeing you there, Mr.
• 32:51
  Speaker 7: Rucker.
• 32:51
Speaker 2: It's always a pleasure to have you on the show, man.
• 32:53
Speaker 5: Appreciate it. Thank you. I always enjoy being here. All right.

Speaker 2: Coming up later today, Metro News Midday. Amanda Barron is
• 36:19
Speaker 2: back with us. She had a little bit of an
• 36:21
Speaker 2: issue with her home. She's got that taken care of, hopefully.
• 36:24
Speaker 2: So hip waiters no longer needed in the basement of
• 36:27
Speaker 2: Amanda Barron. So hopefully she'll be back with us today.
• 36:30
Speaker 2: She is going to be back with us today. Jeff
• 36:31
Speaker 2: Jenkins has the news. Dave Weekly has commentary today. You
• 36:34
Speaker 2: can read that now if you missed it this morning
• 36:36
Speaker 2: at wvmetronews.com. And if you think things are confusing now...
• 36:41
Speaker 2: in the world of politics. Weekly will take you back
• 36:44
Speaker 2: to a time that says, hold my beer, when you
• 36:46
Speaker 2: had three or four different people claiming to be governor
• 36:50
Speaker 2: of the state of West Virginia. Weekly's done his research
• 36:52
Speaker 2: on this. You can read the commentary, wvmetronews.com, or you
• 36:55
Speaker 2: can listen to the hotline host coming up at, we'll
• 36:59
Speaker 2: have it on about 1220 or so today. The director
• 37:02
Speaker 2: of nursing at WVU Medicine, Godlessano Children's, is going to
• 37:04
Speaker 2: join us on the show. That is Metro News Midday
• 37:07
Speaker 2: with Amanda and me, powered by Salango Law. Now on
• 37:09
Speaker 2: this show tomorrow, Our friend Javon Schmidt from Goodwill of
• 37:13
Speaker 2: the Summit will join us. He was just on the
• 37:15
Speaker 2: show last week, but they got some big doings going on.
• 37:18
Speaker 2: There is a new Goodwill store opening up in Eleanor
• 37:21
Speaker 2: in Putnam County. And I think they opened that up
• 37:24
Speaker 2: on Thursday. A few of our radio stations are going
• 37:26
Speaker 2: to be broadcasting live around that time the days after
• 37:29
Speaker 2: from over there. So Javon Schmidt will join us to
• 37:31
Speaker 2: talk about this new Goodwill store in Eleanor, which opens
• 37:33
Speaker 2: up on Thursday. He'll join us on the show tomorrow
• 37:36
Speaker 2: to talk about it. The Dave Allen Show on 580
• 37:38
Speaker 2: Live brought to you in part by Morgan & Morgan.
• 37:40
Speaker 2: If you're injured, hire Morgan & Morgan, America's largest injury
• 37:43
Speaker 2: law firm. Let me knock out some text here. Text says,
• 37:45
Speaker 2: this is from yesterday's show, Dave. Danny is killing me.
• 37:50
Speaker 2: He kills me all the time. The Democratic Party, this
• 37:53
Speaker 2: is the continuation of that text. The Democratic Party left
• 37:56
Speaker 2: me a long time ago, but I can't bring myself
• 37:59
Speaker 2: to change. Dad always said, as an independent, it's just
• 38:02
Speaker 2: a Republican who is ashamed to admit it. I mean,
• 38:06
Speaker 2: it is true if you look at the data and
• 38:09
Speaker 2: the polling. that those that are independent or no party
• 38:13
Speaker 2: do tend to vote, and this is done by polling,
• 38:17
Speaker 2: nobody's actually looking at their actual vote, they do tend
• 38:20
Speaker 2: to lean more conservative. And for one reason or another,
• 38:24
Speaker 2: they decided to leave the party. That's not to say
• 38:27
Speaker 2: that there aren't former Democrats that opted for no party.
• 38:32
Speaker 2: Maybe they did. Maybe, you know, for the same reason
• 38:35
Speaker 2: that a lot of Republicans leave the party, they're unhappy
• 38:37
Speaker 2: with the party's status on something. They're unhappy with the
• 38:42
Speaker 2: head of the party, meaning the president of the United States,
• 38:45
Speaker 2: Donald Trump, currently sitting with a 32% approval rating. So
• 38:49
Speaker 2: that may have a little something to do with it. Look,
• 38:51
  Speaker 2: I have been a Democrat. I have been a Republican.
• 38:56
Speaker 2: And now I'm an independent. And I started out, you
• 38:59
Speaker 2: know my story, I've told you before, I started out
• 39:01
Speaker 2: as a Democrat because being in Logan County, I graduated
• 39:06
Speaker 2: high school in 1988, my first election that I voted
• 39:11
Speaker 2: was in 1988, and there were no Republicans locally to
• 39:17
Speaker 2: vote for. I mean, none.
• 39:19
  Speaker 1: No, none.
• 39:20
  Speaker 2: Zero.
• 39:21
  Speaker 7: Zilch.
• 39:21
Speaker 2: So if you wanted to have somebody to vote for
• 39:23
Speaker 2: in the primary, you had to be a Democrat. And
• 39:26
Speaker 2: that just recently changed. It was just announced, I guess,
• 39:28
Speaker 2: last week that and we talked about it on both shows,
• 39:31
Speaker 2: that Logan County is now fully Republican. Every elected office
• 39:36
Speaker 2: in Logan County is now held by a Republican, everyone.
• 39:39
Speaker 2: And I'm going to say most of those, 95% or higher,
• 39:45
Speaker 2: used to be Democrats, same people. They just changed party.
• 39:48
Speaker 2: I became a Republican in And then I left the
• 39:51
Speaker 2: Republican Party. And with all due respect, it was a
• 39:54
Speaker 2: very amicable split. As Dave Mason said in the song,
• 39:59
Speaker 2: there ain't no good guy, there ain't no bad guy.
• 40:01
Speaker 2: It's only you and me, and we just disagree. My
• 40:06
Speaker 2: story was, is I left the Republican Party because I
• 40:10
Speaker 2: could not stand any longer and stand by and look
• 40:14
Speaker 2: at the blind worship of Donald Trump, somebody who I
• 40:16
Speaker 2: voted for twice. That's why I left the Republican Party.
• 40:20
Speaker 2: My ideals, my morals are 95 percent, 90 to 95
• 40:27
Speaker 2: percent Republican, especially as it goes to the economy and business.
• 40:32
Speaker 2: A little bit more libertarian in certain areas because I've
• 40:38
Speaker 2: kind of got the attitude that I really don't care
• 40:40
Speaker 2: what you do in the privacy of your own home.
• 40:41
Speaker 2: It's none of my business. But, you know, there I was.
• 40:46
Speaker 2: I was having a conversation with somebody earlier, and I
• 40:49
Speaker 2: think I've told you this story before. There is a
• 40:52
Speaker 2: good friend of mine who is running for the legislature,
• 40:55
Speaker 2: not in this area. This is not an endorsement or anything,
• 40:57
Speaker 2: but a longtime friend of mine who is running for
• 41:00
Speaker 2: House of Delegates in another part of the state, not
• 41:02
Speaker 2: in our listing area. And he's running as a Democrat,
• 41:05
Speaker 2: trying to unseat a Republican. And I had this conversation
• 41:07
Speaker 2: with him, and I said, look, They're going to come
• 41:10
Speaker 2: at you, and even though you are a conservative, pro-gun,
• 41:15
Speaker 2: pro-life Democrat, they are going to tie you to Omar.
• 41:20
Speaker 2: They're going to tie you to Chuck Schumer, to Kamala Harris.
• 41:25
Speaker 2: Get used to it. And by gosh, he was right,
• 41:28
Speaker 2: because they have, even though he was nowhere near close
• 41:32
Speaker 2: to that. Anyway, so appreciate the text. Alyssa Middleton. One
• 41:37
Speaker 2: of the two people in the ambulance the night John
• 41:39
Speaker 2: Lucas was killed due back in court. There's a status
• 41:41
Speaker 2: hearing today in front of Judge Hardy that's set to
• 41:45
Speaker 2: begin at 1.30 this afternoon. Of course, we'll be in
• 41:46
Speaker 2: the courtroom. Middleton charged with voluntary manslaughter, aggregated vehicular homicide,
• 41:53
Speaker 2: and leaving the scene of an accident involving death. The defense,
• 41:57
Speaker 2: and we told you this last week, the defense is
• 42:01
Speaker 2: asking for an expert in toxicology. to be allowed to
• 42:05
Speaker 2: have some input into the case. Of course, it was
• 42:07
Speaker 2: released last week. And again, it is a matter of
• 42:09
Speaker 2: public record. It was released last week that John Lucas,
• 42:14
Speaker 2: the man who tragically died in this incident, had amphetamines
• 42:17
Speaker 2: and meth in his system. And so they're trying, I mean,
• 42:22
Speaker 2: that's a matter of public record. That came out from
• 42:23
Speaker 2: the toxicology department. So they're I guess, checking to see
• 42:28
Speaker 2: if this is going to be part of the court
• 42:29
Speaker 2: case or not. But it's out there. I mean, it's
• 42:31
Speaker 2: been released. So Judge Hardy will hear it all today.
• 42:34
Speaker 2: And again, we'll have coverage on the air and online.
• 42:36
Speaker 2: That status hearing is set to begin at 1.30 today.
• 42:38

• 46:17
Speaker 2: presented by Selangor Law at GoMart Ballpark on Thursday, October
• 46:20
Speaker 2: the 29th. We had a text here that said, being
• 46:26
Speaker 2: a concerned listener, what's your favorite brand of hot sauce?
• 46:29
Speaker 2: I like the Local Hive Honey Habanero. I don't really
• 46:32
Speaker 2: have a favorite brand per se. My wife and I
• 46:37
Speaker 2: picked up some habanero from Trader Joe's when we were
• 46:40
Speaker 2: in Columbus not long ago. It'll put a hurting on you,
• 46:44
Speaker 2: as my dad would say.
• 46:45
  Speaker 5: All right.
• 46:46
Speaker 2: It's good, though. It's got a good flavor. The one,
• 46:49
Speaker 2: and I hand to, and I'm going to totally butcher
• 46:53
Speaker 2: this in the pronunciation. I just tell people it's the
• 46:57
Speaker 2: one that you see at every Mexican restaurant, El Yucateco, maybe.
• 47:03
Speaker 2: it is described, I did a little research on the
• 47:05
Speaker 2: break here, a pungent habanero-based line such as green or
• 47:08
Speaker 2: red variants impacts a much higher heat level than traditional
• 47:11
Speaker 2: vinegar-heavy sauces. So that one, that's one of my go-tos,
• 47:15
  Speaker 2: but I like Frank's, I like Tabasco, I like Texas,
• 47:18
Speaker 2: I like them all. I like them all. How's that
• 47:20
Speaker 2: for a good politically correct answer? Text, not only did
• 47:27
Speaker 2: Trump start a forever war in Iran, but pretty sure
• 47:29
Speaker 2: he kicked off World War III in It's a slow

• 47:35
Speaker 2: Big thank you to MAGA voters. Had you all developed

Speaker 2: the Leatherwood Project. I have been doing this show for

Speaker 2: almost six and a half years now, and it seems
• 48:17
Speaker 2: like we've been talking about this particular project ever since

Speaker 2: Get your tickets in advance. Please do so at dirtybirdsbaseball.com. Text,
• 48:50
Speaker 2: it's kind of gross. The defense lawyers are going to
• 48:52
Speaker 2: use meth in the guy's system to try and get
• 48:54
Speaker 2: a lighter sentence for the person who ran him over
• 48:56
Speaker 2: and dragged him under the ambulance for a couple of miles,
• 48:59
Speaker 2: says the texter. Text, I agree with you when it
• 49:02
Speaker 2: comes to blind worship of Donald Trump. Some have, but
• 49:05
Speaker 2: there's also blind hatred of him, and that's never called out.
• 49:08
Speaker 2: And if you do, you're accused of being in a cult.
• 49:10
  Speaker 6: Sorry.
• 49:11
Speaker 2: The practices of cults include completely silencing, threatening, and assaulting
• 49:14
Speaker 2: people who question what you're doing. It also includes separating
• 49:17
Speaker 2: you from family and friends if they try to talk
• 49:19
Speaker 2: to you. What side does all that? Hint, it ain't Trump's. Look,
• 49:23
Speaker 2: I have said this before about Donald Trump.
• 49:27
  Speaker 7: All right.
• 49:30
Speaker 2: The term Trump derangement syndrome is a real thing. I
• 49:33
Speaker 2: am not a fan of Donald Trump. I voted for
• 49:35
Speaker 2: him twice. Not not a fan. now of what he's become,
• 49:39
Speaker 2: maybe what he was all the time. I don't know.
• 49:42
Speaker 2: But however, I'm not one of these people that gets
• 49:44
Speaker 2: up every morning and thinks, gosh, what can I post?
• 49:48
Speaker 2: What can I do to hate on Donald Trump today? Now,
• 49:51
Speaker 2: I'm kind of busy. I get up. I do two radio,
• 49:53
Speaker 2: three radio shows. I got a life. I got a wife.
• 49:56
Speaker 2: I got stuff. You know, I don't sit around and
• 50:01
Speaker 2: let hatred. I don't. Number one, I don't hate Donald Trump.
• 50:03
Speaker 2: I don't hate anybody. Okay, except for Washington, Philadelphia, and
• 50:07
Speaker 2: the New York Giants. Okay, I hate them, but that's all.
• 50:10
Speaker 2: I don't sit around and worry about Donald Trump, what
• 50:12
Speaker 2: Donald Trump is saying, what Donald Trump is doing. I
• 50:14
Speaker 2: do it more than some because I have radio talk
• 50:17
Speaker 2: shows to host. But I do think that some people
• 50:20
Speaker 2: that have this hatred of Donald Trump or hatred of
• 50:23
Speaker 2: the Republican Party or hatred of the liberals or whatever, man,
• 50:27
Speaker 2: touch some grass every now and then. Just get outside, breathe,
• 50:30
Speaker 2: get a hobby, get a dog, get something. A text
• 50:35
Speaker 2: to the person who said Trump just started World War III.
• 50:37
Speaker 2: Where have you been the last 25 years? Look at
• 50:39
Speaker 2: everything that's been going on around the world over the
• 50:41
Speaker 2: past 25 years. Those are all small battles for World
• 50:45
Speaker 2: War III, so shut it, says the texter. I do
• 50:49
Speaker 2: want to mention this just real quick, and I want
• 50:51
Speaker 2: to bring this to your attention. We had a meeting
• 50:53
Speaker 2: about this in the company yesterday. The year of our Lord, 2027,
• 50:57
Speaker 2: next year, which will be here in a couple months,
• 50:59
Speaker 2: by the way, this here radio station, WCHS, is turning 100.
• 51:04
Speaker 2: years old. Now, we don't look a day over 93,
• 51:06
Speaker 2: I know, but we do turn 100 next year. And
• 51:08
Speaker 2: I'm actually, I'm told it was in November of 1927.
• 51:11
Speaker 2: That was actually the first year in the month of WCHS.
• 51:15
Speaker 2: And we're going to be celebrating it next month, especially,
• 51:18
Speaker 2: or I'm sorry, next year. So we'll be telling you
• 51:20
Speaker 2: more about that. But you just think about this station
• 51:23
Speaker 2: that has been here, I mean, went on the air
• 51:25
Speaker 2: before the Depression, before Pearl Harbor, World War II, Korea,
• 51:28
Speaker 2: before Elvis, Kennedy being shot, Martin Luther King, the Vietnam War, Watergate,
• 51:33
Speaker 2: Man on the Moon, 9-11, etc., etc. We're going to
• 51:37
Speaker 2: do a little celebrating of our place next year. So
• 51:42
Speaker 2: be putting your thinking caps on now.
• 51:44
  Speaker 12: T.J.
• 51:45
Speaker 2: Meadows is here. How you doing, man? This place is
• 51:47
  Speaker 2: an institution.
• 51:48
Speaker 5: When you're on the network here, you're not just on
• 51:50
Speaker 5: Metro News, but you're in WCHS control.
• 51:54
Speaker 1: This is an institution.
• 51:56
Speaker 2: In radio and broadcasting. And most of the people here
• 51:58
Speaker 2: should be in institutions. Present company included. What you got today?
• 52:05
Speaker 5: Oh, never mind. I can't even do it after that.
• 52:07
Speaker 2: That guy. That guy's coming up at 10.06. The Metro

• 52:12
Speaker 2: later today with Amanda Barron for Metro News Midday presented
• 52:15
Speaker 2: by Salango Law. We'll see you around 12 o'clock. Speaking
• 52:18
Speaker 2: of celebrations, by the way, I failed to mention this. WEPM,
• 52:21
Speaker 2: one of our stations in the Metro News family in Martinsburg,
• 52:23
Speaker 2: celebrating their 80th birthday today. We'll talk about that on Midday.
