- 0:00Speaker 1: Heliman, chapter five. And it came to pass that in
- 0:05Speaker 1: this same year, behold, Nephi delivered up the judgment seat
- 0:08Speaker 1: to a man whose name was Caesorum. For as their
- 0:12Speaker 1: laws and their governments were established by the voice of
- 0:14Speaker 1: the people, and they who chose evil were more numerous
- 0:17Speaker 1: than they who chose good, Therefore they were ripening for destruction,
- 0:22Speaker 1: for the laws had become corrupted, yea, and this was
- 0:25Speaker 1: not all. They were a stiff necked people, insomuch that
- 0:29Speaker 1: they could not be governed by the law nor justice,
- 0:31Speaker 1: save it were to their destruction. And it came to
- 0:34Speaker 1: pass that Nephi had become weary because of their iniquity,
- 0:38Speaker 1: and he yielded up the judgment seat and took it
- 0:40Speaker 1: upon him to preach the word of God all the
- 0:42Speaker 1: remainder of his days. And his brother Lehi also all
- 0:46Speaker 1: the remainder of his days. For they remembered the words
- 0:49Speaker 1: which their father, Heliman, spake unto them. And these are
- 0:52Speaker 1: the words which he spake. Behold, my sons, I desire
- 0:57Speaker 1: that ye should remember to keep the commandments of God,
- 1:00Speaker 1: and I would that ye should declare unto the people
- 1:03Speaker 1: these words. Behold, I have given unto you the names
- 1:06Speaker 1: of our first parents, who came out of the land
- 1:08Speaker 1: of Jerusalem. In this I have done that when ye
- 1:11Speaker 1: remember your names, ye may remember them, and when ye
- 1:15Speaker 1: remember them, ye may remember their works. And when ye
- 1:19Speaker 1: remember their works, ye may know how that it is
- 1:23Speaker 1: said and also written that they were good. Therefore, my sons,
- 1:28Speaker 1: I would that ye should do that which is good,
- 1:31Speaker 1: that it may be said of you and also written,
- 1:33Speaker 1: even as it has been said and written of them.
- 1:36Speaker 1: And now, my sons, behold, I have somewhat more to
- 1:38Speaker 1: desire of you. Which desire is that ye may not
- 1:41Speaker 1: do these things that ye may boast, but that ye
- 1:44Speaker 1: may do these things to lay up for yourselves a
- 1:46Speaker 1: treasure in heaven, yea, which is eternal and which fadeth
- 1:50Speaker 1: not away. YEA, that ye may have that precious gift
- 1:53Speaker 1: of eternal life, which we have reason to suppose hath
- 1:56Speaker 1: been given to our fathers. O remember, remember, my sons,
- 2:01Speaker 1: the words which King Benjamin spake unto his people. YEA.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Remember that there is no other way nor means whereby
- 2:08Speaker 1: man can be saved only through the atoning blood of
- 2:12Speaker 1: Jesus Christ, who shall come. YEA, remember that he cometh
- 2:17Speaker 1: to redeem the world. And remember also the words which
- 2:21Speaker 1: Amulek spake unto z Isram in the city of Ammonihah.
- 2:25Speaker 1: For he said unto him that the Lord Shurly should
- 2:27Speaker 1: come to redeem his people, but that he should not
- 2:30Speaker 1: come to redeem them in their sins, but to redeem
- 2:34Speaker 1: them from their sins. And he hath power given unto
- 2:38Speaker 1: him from the Father to redeem them from their sins
- 2:40Speaker 1: because of repentance. Therefore he hath sent his angels to
- 2:45Speaker 1: declare the tidings of the conditions of repentance, which bringeth
- 2:49Speaker 1: unto the power of the Redeemer, unto the salvation of
- 2:52Speaker 1: their souls. And now, my sons, remember, remember that it
- 2:57Speaker 1: is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who so is Christ,
- 3:00Speaker 1: the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation.
- 3:04Speaker 1: That when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea,
- 3:08Speaker 1: his shafts in the whirlwind, YEA, when all his hail
- 3:12Speaker 1: and his mighty storms shall beat upon you, it shall
- 3:15Speaker 1: have no power over you to drag you down to
- 3:18Speaker 1: the gulf of misery and endless woe, because of the
- 3:21Speaker 1: rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation,
- 3:26Speaker 1: a foundation whereon if men build, they cannot fall. And
- 3:31Speaker 1: it came to pass that these were the words which
- 3:33Speaker 1: Helaman taught to his sons. Yea, he to teach them
- 3:36Speaker 1: many things which are not written, and also many things
- 3:39Speaker 1: which are written. And they did remember his words. And
- 3:43Speaker 1: therefore they went forth, keeping the commandments of God, to
- 3:46Speaker 1: teach the word of God among all the people of Nephi,
- 3:49Speaker 1: beginning at the city Bountiful, and from thenceforth to the
- 3:53Speaker 1: city of Gid, and from the city of Gid to
- 3:56Speaker 1: the city of Muluk, and even from one city to another,
- 4:00Speaker 1: until they had gone forth among all the people of
- 4:02Speaker 1: Nephi who were in the land southward, and from thence
- 4:06Speaker 1: into the land of Zarahemla, among the Lamanites. And it
- 4:09Speaker 1: came to pass that they did preach with great power,
- 4:12Speaker 1: insomuch that they did confound many of those dissenters who
- 4:16Speaker 1: had gone over from the Nephites, insomuch that they came
- 4:19Speaker 1: forth and did confess their sins and were baptized unto repentance,
- 4:24Speaker 1: and immediately returned to the Nephites to endeavor to repair
- 4:27Speaker 1: unto them the wrongs which they had done. And it
- 4:30Speaker 1: came to pass that Nephi and Leehide did preach unto
- 4:33Speaker 1: the Lamanites with such great power and authority, For they
- 4:37Speaker 1: had power and authority given unto them that they might speak,
- 4:41Speaker 1: and they also had what they should speak given unto them.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Therefore they did speak unto the great astonishment of the Lamanites,
- 4:48Speaker 1: to the convincing them in so much that there were
- 4:50Speaker 1: eight thousand of the Lamanites who were in the land
- 4:53Speaker 1: of Zarahemla and round about baptized unto repentance, and were
- 4:57Speaker 1: convinced of the wickedness of the traditions of their foll
- 5:01Speaker 1: And it came to pass that Nephi and Lehi did
- 5:03Speaker 1: proceed from thence to go to the land of Nephi.
- 5:07Speaker 1: And it came to pass that they were taken by
- 5:09Speaker 1: an army of the Lamanites and cast into prison yea,
- 5:13Speaker 1: even in that same prison in which Ammon and his
- 5:15Speaker 1: brethren were cast by the servants of Limhai. And after
- 5:20Speaker 1: they had been cast into prison many days without food, behold,
- 5:24Speaker 1: they went forth into the prison to take them, that
- 5:27Speaker 1: they might slay them. And it came to pass that
- 5:30Speaker 1: Nephi and Lei were encircled about as if by fire,
- 5:34Speaker 1: even insomuch that they durst not lay their hands upon them,
- 5:37Speaker 1: for fear lest they should be burned. Nevertheless, Nephi and
- 5:41Speaker 1: Lehi were not burned, and they were as standing in
- 5:45Speaker 1: the midst of fire, and were not burned. And when
- 5:49Speaker 1: they saw that they were encircled about with a pillar
- 5:51Speaker 1: of fire, and that it burned them, not their hearts
- 5:54Speaker 1: did take courage, for they saw that the Lamanites durst
- 5:57Speaker 1: not lay their hands upon them. Either, durst they come
- 6:01Speaker 1: near unto them, but stood as if they were struck
- 6:04Speaker 1: dumb with amazement. And it came to pass that Nephi
- 6:07Speaker 1: and lee High did stand forth and began to speak
- 6:10Speaker 1: unto them, saying, fear not, for behold, it is God
- 6:13Speaker 1: that has shown unto you this marvelous thing in the
- 6:17Speaker 1: which is shown unto you, that ye cannot lay your
- 6:19Speaker 1: hands on us to slay us. And behold, when they
- 6:23Speaker 1: had said these words, the earth shook exceedingly, and the
- 6:26Speaker 1: walls of the prison did shake, as if they were
- 6:28Speaker 1: about to tumble to the earth. But behold, they did
- 6:32Speaker 1: not fall. And behold they that were in the prison
- 6:35Speaker 1: were Lamanites and Nephites, who were dissenters. And it came
- 6:38Speaker 1: to pass that they were overshadowed with a cloud of darkness,
- 6:42Speaker 1: and an awful, solemn fear came upon them. And it
- 6:46Speaker 1: came to pass that there came a voice, as if
- 6:48Speaker 1: it were above the cloud of darkness, saying, repent, ye,
- 6:53Speaker 1: repent ye, and seek no more to destroy my servants,
- 6:58Speaker 1: whom I have sent unto you to dear clear good tidings.
- 7:02Speaker 1: And it came to pass that when they heard this voice,
- 7:04Speaker 1: and beheld that it was not a voice of thunder,
- 7:07Speaker 1: neither was it a voice of a great tumultuous noise.
- 7:10Speaker 1: But behold, it was a still voice of perfect mildness,
- 7:14Speaker 1: as if it had been a whisper, And it did
- 7:17Speaker 1: pierce even to the very soul. And notwithstanding the mildness
- 7:21Speaker 1: of the voice, behold the earth shook exceedingly, and the
- 7:24Speaker 1: walls of the prison trembled again, as if it were
- 7:27Speaker 1: about to tumble to the earth. And behold, the cloud
- 7:31Speaker 1: of darkness which had overshadowed them, did not disperse. And
- 7:35Speaker 1: behold the voice came again, saying, repent, ye, repent ye,
- 7:40Speaker 1: for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand, and seek
- 7:43Speaker 1: no more to destroy my servants. And it came to
- 7:47Speaker 1: pass that the earth shook again, and the walls trembled,
- 7:51Speaker 1: And also again the third time, the voice came and
- 7:55Speaker 1: did speak unto them marvelous words which cannot be uttered
- 7:58Speaker 1: by man. And the walls did tremble again, and the
- 8:02Speaker 1: earth shook as if it were about to divide asunder.
- 8:06Speaker 1: And it came to pass that the Lamanites could not
- 8:08Speaker 1: flee because of the cloud of darkness which did overshadow them. Yea.
- 8:12Speaker 1: And also they were immovable because of the fear which
- 8:14Speaker 1: did come upon them. Now there was one among them
- 8:17Speaker 1: who was a Nephite by birth, who had once belonged
- 8:20Speaker 1: to the Church of God, but had dissented from them.
- 8:24Speaker 1: And it came to pass that he turned him about,
- 8:26Speaker 1: and behold he saw through the cloud of darkness the
- 8:29Speaker 1: faces of Nephi and Lehi. And behold, they did shine exceedingly,
- 8:34Speaker 1: even as the faces of angels. And he beheld that
- 8:38Speaker 1: they did lift their eyes to Heaven. And they were
- 8:41Speaker 1: in the attitude as if talking or lifting their voices
- 8:44Speaker 1: to some being whom they beheld. And it came to
- 8:48Speaker 1: pass that this man did cry unto the multitudes they
- 8:51Speaker 1: might turn and look and behold there was power given
- 8:54Speaker 1: unto them, that they did turn and look, and they
- 8:58Speaker 1: did behold the faces of Ephi and Lehi. And they said,
- 9:02Speaker 1: unto the man, behold, what do all these things mean?
- 9:06Speaker 1: And who is it with whom these men do converse.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Now the man's name was a Menedab, and a Menadab
- 9:14Speaker 1: said unto them, they do converse with the angels of God.
- 9:19Speaker 1: And it came to pass that the Lamanites said, unto him,
- 9:22Speaker 1: what shall we do that this cloud of darkness may
- 9:24Speaker 1: be removed from overshadowing us? And Amnadab said unto them,
- 9:29Speaker 1: you must repent and cry unto the voice, even until
- 9:32Speaker 1: ye shall have faith in Christ, who was taught unto
- 9:35Speaker 1: you by Alma and Amulek and Diesraum. And when ye
- 9:39Speaker 1: shall do this, the cloud of darkness shall be removed
- 9:42Speaker 1: from overshadowing you. And it came to pass that they
- 9:46Speaker 1: all did begin to cry unto the voice of him
- 9:48Speaker 1: who had shaken the earth. Yea, they did cry even
- 9:52Speaker 1: until the cloud of darkness was dispersed. And it came
- 9:57Speaker 1: to pass that when they cast their eyes about and
- 9:59Speaker 1: saw that the cloud of darkness was dispersed from overshadowing them,
- 10:03Speaker 1: behold that they saw that they were encircled about, yea,
- 10:07Speaker 1: every soul by a pillar of fire, and Nephi and
- 10:12Speaker 1: Lehi were in the midst of them. Yea, they were
- 10:14Speaker 1: encircled about. Yea, they were as if in the midst
- 10:18Speaker 1: of a flaming fire. Yet it did harm them, not,
- 10:22Speaker 1: neither did it take hold upon the walls of the prison.
- 10:25Speaker 1: And they were filled with that joy which is unspeakable
- 10:29Speaker 1: and full of glory. And behold, the Holy Spirit of
- 10:32Speaker 1: God did come down from heaven and did enter into
- 10:35Speaker 1: their hearts. And they were filled as if with fire,
- 10:39Speaker 1: and they could speak forth marvelous words. And it came
- 10:42Speaker 1: to pass that there came a voice unto them, YEA,
- 10:45Speaker 1: a pleasant voice, as if it were a whisper, saying peace,
- 10:50Speaker 1: Peace be unto you, because of your faith in my
- 10:53Speaker 1: well beloved, who was from the foundation of the world.
- 10:57Speaker 1: And now when they heard this, they cast their eyes
- 11:00Speaker 1: as if to behold from whence the voice came. And
- 11:04Speaker 1: behold they saw the heavens open, and angels came down
- 11:07Speaker 1: out of heaven and ministered unto them. And there were
- 11:10Speaker 1: about three hundred souls who saw and heard these things,
- 11:13Speaker 1: and they were bidden to go forth and marvel. Not
- 11:17Speaker 1: neither should they doubt. And it came to pass that
- 11:20Speaker 1: they did go forth and did minister unto the people,
- 11:22Speaker 1: declaring throughout all the regions round about all the things
- 11:25Speaker 1: which they had heard and seen, insomuch that the more
- 11:28Speaker 1: part of the Lamanites were convinced of them because of
- 11:31Speaker 1: the greatness of the evidences which they had received. And
- 11:36Speaker 1: as many as were convinced, did lay down their weapons
- 11:38Speaker 1: of war, and also their hatred and the tradition of
- 11:41Speaker 1: their fathers. And it came to pass that they did
- 11:44Speaker 1: yield up unto the Nephites the lands of their possession Helimann,
- 11:50Speaker 1: chapter six. And it came to pass that when the
- 11:53Speaker 1: sixty and second year of the reign of the Judges
- 11:56Speaker 1: had ended, all these things had happened, and the Lamanites
- 11:59Speaker 1: had become the more part of them a righteous people,
- 12:02Speaker 1: insomuch that their righteousness did exceed that of the Nephites,
- 12:06Speaker 1: because of their firmness and their steadiness in the faith.
- 12:09Speaker 1: For behold, there were many of the Nephites who had
- 12:12Speaker 1: become hardened and impenitent and grossly wicked, insomuch that they
- 12:17Speaker 1: did reject the word of God. And all the preaching
- 12:20Speaker 1: and prophesying which did come among them. Nevertheless, the people
- 12:24Speaker 1: of the Church did have great joy because of the
- 12:26Speaker 1: conversion of the Lamanites Yea, because of the Church of
- 12:30Speaker 1: God which had been established among them. And they did
- 12:33Speaker 1: fellowship one with another, and did rejoice one with another,
- 12:37Speaker 1: and did have great joy. And it came to pass
- 12:40Speaker 1: that many of the Lamanites did come down into the
- 12:43Speaker 1: land of Zarahemla, and did declare unto the people of
- 12:46Speaker 1: the Nephites, the manner of their conversion, and did exhort
- 12:50Speaker 1: them to faith and repentance. Yea, and many did preach
- 12:54Speaker 1: with exceeding the great power and authority unto the bringing
- 12:57Speaker 1: down many of them into the depths of humility, to
- 13:00Speaker 1: be the humble followers of God and the lamb. And
- 13:03Speaker 1: it came to pass that many of the Lamanites did
- 13:05Speaker 1: go into the land northward, and also Nephi and Lehi
- 13:09Speaker 1: went into the land northward to preach unto the people.
- 13:13Speaker 1: And thus ended the sixty and third year. And behold,
- 13:17Speaker 1: there was peace in all the land, insomuch that the
- 13:20Speaker 1: Nephites did go into whatsoever part of the land they would,
- 13:24Speaker 1: whether among the Nephites or the Lamanites. And it came
- 13:27Speaker 1: to pass that the Lamanites did also go whithersoever they would,
- 13:30Speaker 1: whether it were among the Lamanites or among the Nephites.
- 13:34Speaker 1: And thus they did have free intercourse one with another,
- 13:37Speaker 1: to buy and to sell and to get gain according
- 13:39Speaker 1: to their desire. And it came to pass that they
- 13:42Speaker 1: became exceedingly rich, both the Lamanites and the Nephytes. And
- 13:47Speaker 1: they did have an exceeding plenty of gold and of silver,
- 13:50Speaker 1: and of all manner of precious metals, both in the
- 13:52Speaker 1: land south and in the land north. And the land
- 13:56Speaker 1: south was called the Lehigh, and the land north was
- 13:58Speaker 1: called Muluk, which was after the son of Zedekiah, for
- 14:02Speaker 1: the Lord did bring Mulik into the land north, and
- 14:04Speaker 1: Lehi into the land south. And behold, there was all
- 14:08Speaker 1: manner of gold in both these lands, and of silver
- 14:11Speaker 1: and of precious ore of every kind. And there were
- 14:14Speaker 1: also curious workmen who did work all kinds of ore
- 14:18Speaker 1: and did refine it. And thus they did become rich.
- 14:21Speaker 1: They did raise grain and abundance, both in the north
- 14:24Speaker 1: and in the south, and they did flourish exceedingly both
- 14:27Speaker 1: in the north and in the south, and they did
- 14:29Speaker 1: multiply and wax exceedingly strong in the land. And they
- 14:33Speaker 1: did raise many flocks and herds, yea, many fatlings. Behold,
- 14:38Speaker 1: their women did toil and spin, and did make all
- 14:40Speaker 1: manner of cloth, of fine twined linen, and cloth of
- 14:43Speaker 1: every kind to clothe their nakedness. And thus the sixty
- 14:47Speaker 1: and fourth year did pass away in peace. And in
- 14:50Speaker 1: the sixty and fifth year they did also have great
- 14:53Speaker 1: joy and peace, yea, much preaching in many prophecies concerning
- 14:57Speaker 1: that which was to come, And thus pass away the
- 15:00Speaker 1: sixty and fifth year. And it came to pass that
- 15:03Speaker 1: in the sixty and sixth year of the reign of
- 15:05Speaker 1: the judges, Behold, Caesorum was murdered by an unknown hand
- 15:09Speaker 1: as he sat upon the judgment seat. And it came
- 15:12Speaker 1: to pass that in the same year that his son,
- 15:14Speaker 1: who had been appointed by the people in his stead,
- 15:16Speaker 1: was also murdered. And thus ended the sixty and sixth year.
- 15:21Speaker 1: And in the commencement of the sixty and seventh year,
- 15:23Speaker 1: the people began to grow exceedingly wicked again, For behold,
- 15:27Speaker 1: the Lord had blessed them so long with the riches
- 15:29Speaker 1: of the world, that they had not been stirred up
- 15:31Speaker 1: to anger, to wars, or to bloodshed. Therefore they began
- 15:34Speaker 1: to set their hearts upon their riches. Yea, they began
- 15:37Speaker 1: to seek to get gain, that they might be lifted
- 15:40Speaker 1: up one above another. Therefore they began to commit secret
- 15:43Speaker 1: murders and to rob and to plunder, that they might
- 15:46Speaker 1: get gain. And now behold, those murderers and plunderers were
- 15:50Speaker 1: a band who had been formed by Kishkumen and Gadiantin.
- 15:54Speaker 1: And now it had come to pass that there were
- 15:56Speaker 1: many even among the Nephites of Gadyatin's band. But hold,
- 16:00Speaker 1: they were more numerous among the more wicked part of
- 16:02Speaker 1: the Lamanites. And they were called geddy Anton's robbers and murderers.
- 16:07Speaker 1: And it was they who did murder the chief judge
- 16:10Speaker 1: Caesorum and his son while in the judgment seat. And
- 16:13Speaker 1: behold they were not found. And now it came to
- 16:17Speaker 1: pass when the Lamanites found that there were robbers among them,
- 16:20Speaker 1: they were exceedingly sorrowful, and they did use every means
- 16:24Speaker 1: in their power to destroy them off the face of
- 16:26Speaker 1: the earth. But behold, Satan did stir up the hearts
- 16:30Speaker 1: of the more part of the Nephites, insomuch that they
- 16:33Speaker 1: did unite with those bands of robbers, and did enter
- 16:36Speaker 1: into their covenants and their oaths, that they would protect
- 16:40Speaker 1: and preserve one another in whatsoever difficult circumstances they should
- 16:44Speaker 1: be placed, that they should not suffer for their murders
- 16:47Speaker 1: and their plunderings, and their stealings. And it came to
- 16:50Speaker 1: pass that they did have their signs yea, their secret
- 16:53Speaker 1: signs and their secret words, and this that they might
- 16:56Speaker 1: distinguish a brother who had entered into the covenant, and
- 17:00Speaker 1: that whatsoever wickedness his brothers should do, he should not
- 17:03Speaker 1: be injured by his brother, nor by those who did
- 17:05Speaker 1: belong to his band, who had taken this covenant. And
- 17:10Speaker 1: thus they might murder and plunder, and steal, and commit
- 17:13Speaker 1: hortems and all manner of wickedness contrary to the laws
- 17:16Speaker 1: of their country, and also the laws of their God.
- 17:20Speaker 1: And whosoever of those who belonged to their band should
- 17:23Speaker 1: reveal unto the world of their wickedness and their abominations,
- 17:27Speaker 1: should be tried, not according to the laws of their country,
- 17:30Speaker 1: but according to the laws of their wickedness, which had
- 17:32Speaker 1: been given by Gadiantin and Kishkumen. Now behold that as
- 17:36Speaker 1: these secret oaths and covenants which Alma commanded his son,
- 17:39Speaker 1: should not go forth unto the world, lest they should
- 17:43Speaker 1: be a means of bringing down the people unto destruction.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Now behold, those secret othes and covenants did not come
- 17:50Speaker 1: forth unto Gadyantin from the records which were delivered unto Heliman.
- 17:54Speaker 1: But behold, they were put into the heart of Gadyatin
- 17:56Speaker 1: by that same being who did entice our first parents
- 18:00Speaker 1: to partake of the forbidden fruit. Yea, that same being
- 18:03Speaker 1: who did plot with Cain that if he would murder
- 18:06Speaker 1: his brother Abel, it should not be known and too
- 18:09Speaker 1: the world. And he did plot with Cain and his
- 18:12Speaker 1: followers from that time forth. And also it is that
- 18:15Speaker 1: same being who put it into the hearts of the
- 18:17Speaker 1: people to build a tower sufficiently high that they might
- 18:20Speaker 1: get to heaven. And it was that same being who
- 18:23Speaker 1: led on the people who came from that tower into
- 18:26Speaker 1: this land, who spread the works of darkness and abominations
- 18:29Speaker 1: over all the face of the land, until he dragged
- 18:32Speaker 1: the people down to an entire destruction and to an
- 18:35Speaker 1: everlasting hell. Yea, it is that same being who put
- 18:39Speaker 1: it into the heart of Gadiant, and who still carry
- 18:41Speaker 1: on the work of darkness and of secret murder. And
- 18:45Speaker 1: he has brought it forth from the beginning of man,
- 18:48Speaker 1: even down to this time. And behold it is he
- 18:51Speaker 1: who is the author of all sin. And behold he
- 18:54Speaker 1: doth carry on his works of darkness and secret murder,
- 18:57Speaker 1: and doth hand down their plots and their oaths, and
- 19:00Speaker 1: their covenants, and their plans of awful wickedness, from generation
- 19:04Speaker 1: to generation, according as he can get hold upon the
- 19:08Speaker 1: hearts of the children of men. And now behold he
- 19:11Speaker 1: had got great hold upon the hearts of the Nephites. Yea,
- 19:15Speaker 1: insomuch that they had become exceedingly wicked. Yea, the more
- 19:18Speaker 1: part of them had turned out of the way of righteousness,
- 19:22Speaker 1: and did trample under their feet the commandments of God,
- 19:24Speaker 1: and did turn unto their own ways, and to build
- 19:27Speaker 1: up unto themselves idols of their gold and their silver.
- 19:31Speaker 1: And it came to pass that all these iniquities did
- 19:33Speaker 1: come unto them in the space of not many years,
- 19:36Speaker 1: insomuch that a more part of it had come unto
- 19:39Speaker 1: them in the sixty and seventh year of the reign
- 19:41Speaker 1: of the Judges over the people of Nephi, and they
- 19:44Speaker 1: did grow in their iniquities in the sixty and eighth
- 19:47Speaker 1: year also, and thus we see that the Nephites did
- 19:50Speaker 1: begin to dwindle in unbelief and grow in wickedness and abominations,
- 19:54Speaker 1: while the Lamanites begin to grow exceedingly in the knowledge
- 19:57Speaker 1: of their God Yea. They did begin to keep his
- 20:00Speaker 1: statutes and commandments, and to walk in truth and uprightness
- 20:04Speaker 1: before him. And thus we see that the spirit of
- 20:07Speaker 1: the Lord began to withdraw from the Nephites because of
- 20:10Speaker 1: the wickedness and the hardness of their hearts. And thus
- 20:14Speaker 1: we see that the Lord began to pour out his
- 20:16Speaker 1: spirit upon the Lamanites because of their easiness and willingness
- 20:20Speaker 1: to believe in his words. And it came to pass
- 20:23Speaker 1: that the Lamanites did hunt the band of robbers of Geddyantin,
- 20:27Speaker 1: and they did preach the word of God among the
- 20:29Speaker 1: more wicked part of them, insomuch that this band of
- 20:32Speaker 1: robbers was utterly destroyed from among the Lamanites. And it
- 20:36Speaker 1: came to pass, on the other hand, that the Nephites
- 20:39Speaker 1: did build them up and support them, beginning at the
- 20:42Speaker 1: more wicked part of them, until they had overspread all
- 20:45Speaker 1: the land of the Nephites, and had seduced the more
- 20:47Speaker 1: part of the righteous, until they had come down to
- 20:50Speaker 1: believe in their works and partake of their spoils, and
- 20:52Speaker 1: to join with them in their secret murders and combinations.
- 20:56Speaker 1: And thus they did obtain the sole management of the government,
- 21:00Speaker 1: insomuch that they did trample under their feet and smite
- 21:03Speaker 1: and rend and turn their backs upon the poor and
- 21:05Speaker 1: the meek and the humble followers of God. And thus
- 21:09Speaker 1: we see that they were in an awful state and
- 21:12Speaker 1: ripening for an everlasting destruction. And it came to pass
- 21:16Speaker 1: that thus ended the sixty and eighth year of the
- 21:18Speaker 1: reign of the Judges over the people of Nephi Heliman
- 21:22Speaker 1: Chapter seven. Behold, now it came to pass, in the
- 21:26Speaker 1: sixty and ninth year of the reign of the Judges
- 21:28Speaker 1: over the people of the Nephites, that Nephi, the son
- 21:31Speaker 1: of Heliman returned to the land of Zarahemla from the
- 21:34Speaker 1: land northward. For he had been forth among the people
- 21:37Speaker 1: who were in the land northward, and did preach the
- 21:40Speaker 1: word of God unto them, and did prophesy many things
- 21:42Speaker 1: unto them. And they did reject all his words, insomuch
- 21:46Speaker 1: that he could not stay among them, but returned again
- 21:49Speaker 1: unto the land of his nativity, and seeing the people
- 21:53Speaker 1: in a state of such awful wickedness, and those gadyat
- 21:56Speaker 1: and robbers filling the judgment seats, having usurped the power
- 21:59Speaker 1: and authority of the land, laying aside the commandments of God,
- 22:03Speaker 1: and not in the least to write before him, doing
- 22:06Speaker 1: no justice unto the children of men, condemning the righteous
- 22:09Speaker 1: because of their righteousness, letting the guilty and the wicked
- 22:12Speaker 1: go unpunished because of their money, and moreover, to be
- 22:16Speaker 1: held in office at the head of government, to rule
- 22:18Speaker 1: and to do according to their wills, that they might
- 22:20Speaker 1: get gain and glory of the world, and moreover that
- 22:23Speaker 1: they might the more easily commit dultery and still and kill,
- 22:27Speaker 1: and do according to their own wills. Now, this great
- 22:31Speaker 1: iniquity had come upon the Nephites in the space of
- 22:34Speaker 1: not many years, And when Nephi saw it, his heart
- 22:38Speaker 1: was swollen with sorrow within his breast, and he did
- 22:41Speaker 1: exclaim in the agony of his soul, oh, that I
- 22:46Speaker 1: could have had my days in the days when my
- 22:48Speaker 1: father Nephi first came out of the land of Jerusalem,
- 22:52Speaker 1: that I could have joyed with him and the promised land.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Then were his people easy to be entreated, firm to
- 22:59Speaker 1: keep the commandment of God, and slow to be led
- 23:01Speaker 1: to do iniquity, And they were quick to hearken unto
- 23:04Speaker 1: the words of the Lord. Yea, if my days could
- 23:08Speaker 1: have been in those days, then would my soul have
- 23:10Speaker 1: had joy in the righteousness of my brethren. But behold,
- 23:14Speaker 1: I am consigned that these are my days, and that
- 23:17Speaker 1: my soul shall be filled with sorrow because of this
- 23:20Speaker 1: the wickedness of my brethren. And behold, now it came
- 23:24Speaker 1: to pass that it was upon a tower which was
- 23:26Speaker 1: in the garden of Nephi, which was in the highway
- 23:29Speaker 1: which led to the chief market, which was in the
- 23:32Speaker 1: city of Zarahemla. Therefore, Nephi had bowed himself upon the
- 23:36Speaker 1: tower which was in his garden. Which tower was also
- 23:40Speaker 1: near unto the garden gate by which led the highway.
- 23:43Speaker 1: And it came to pass that there were certain men
- 23:46Speaker 1: passing by and saw Nephi as he was pouring out
- 23:49Speaker 1: his soul, and too God upon the tower. And they
- 23:52Speaker 1: ran and told the people what they had seen, And
- 23:54Speaker 1: the people came together in multitudes that they might know
- 23:57Speaker 1: the cause of so great mourning, for the wickedness of
- 23:59Speaker 1: the peace people. And now when Nephi arose, he beheld
- 24:03Speaker 1: the multitudes of people who had gathered together, and it
- 24:07Speaker 1: came to pass that he opened his mouth and said,
- 24:09Speaker 1: unto them, Behold, why have ye gathered yourselves together? That
- 24:14Speaker 1: I may tell you of your iniquities? Yea, because I
- 24:18Speaker 1: have got upon my tower that I might pour out
- 24:20Speaker 1: my soul into my God, because of the exceeding sorrow
- 24:23Speaker 1: of my heart, which is because of your iniquities, and
- 24:27Speaker 1: because of my mourning and lamentation. Ye have gathered yourselves together.
- 24:31Speaker 1: And do marvel yea. And ye have great need too
- 24:34Speaker 1: marvel yea. Ye ought to marvel because ye are given
- 24:37Speaker 1: away that the devil has got so great hold upon
- 24:40Speaker 1: your hearts. Yea, How could you have given way to
- 24:44Speaker 1: the enticing of him who is seeking to hurl away
- 24:46Speaker 1: your souls down to everlasting misery and endless woe? O? Repent,
- 24:51Speaker 1: ye repent ye? Why will ye die? Turn? Ye? Turn
- 24:56Speaker 1: ye unto the Lord your God? Why has he forsaken you?
- 25:00Speaker 1: It is because you have hardened your hearts. Yea, ye
- 25:03Speaker 1: will not hearken unto the voice of the Good Shepherd. Yea,
- 25:06Speaker 1: ye have provoked him to anger against you. And behold,
- 25:09Speaker 1: instead of gathering you, except ye will repent, Behold, he
- 25:13Speaker 1: shall scatter you forth, that ye shall become meat for
- 25:17Speaker 1: dogs and wild beasts. Oh, how could you have forgotten
- 25:22Speaker 1: your God in the very day that he has delivered you.
- 25:27Speaker 1: But behold, it is to get gain, to be praised
- 25:30Speaker 1: of men, yea, and that ye might get gold and silver.
- 25:33Speaker 1: And ye have set your hearts upon the riches and
- 25:35Speaker 1: the vain things of this world, for the which ye
- 25:38Speaker 1: do murder and plunder and steal, and bear false witness
- 25:41Speaker 1: against your neighbor, and do all manner of iniquity. And
- 25:45Speaker 1: for this cause woe shall come unto you, except ye
- 25:49Speaker 1: shall repent. For if ye will not repent, behold this
- 25:53Speaker 1: great city, and also all those great cities which are
- 25:56Speaker 1: round about, which are in the land of your possession,
- 25:59Speaker 1: shall be take away, that ye shall have no place
- 26:02Speaker 1: in them. For behold, the Lord will not grant unto
- 26:05Speaker 1: you strength as he has hitherto done to a stand
- 26:08Speaker 1: against your enemies. For behold, thus saith the Lord, I
- 26:13Speaker 1: will not show unto the wicked of my strength to
- 26:16Speaker 1: one more than the other, save it be unto those
- 26:19Speaker 1: that repent of their sins and hearken unto my words.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Now therefore I would that ye should behold, my brethren,
- 26:26Speaker 1: that it shall be better for the Lamanites than for you,
- 26:29Speaker 1: except ye shall repent. For behold, they are more righteous
- 26:34Speaker 1: than you, for they have not sinned against that great
- 26:37Speaker 1: knowledge which ye have received. Therefore the Lord will be
- 26:41Speaker 1: merciful unto them. YEA. He will lengthen out their days
- 26:44Speaker 1: and increase their seed, even when thou shalt be utterly destroyed,
- 26:49Speaker 1: except thou shalt repent. YEA, woe be unto you because
- 26:53Speaker 1: of that great abomination which has come among you, and
- 26:57Speaker 1: ye have united yourselves unto it. YEA, to that secret
- 27:00Speaker 1: band which was established by Geddyanton. YEA, woe shall come
- 27:05Speaker 1: unto you because of that pride which ye have suffered
- 27:08Speaker 1: to enter your hearts, which has lifted you up beyond
- 27:12Speaker 1: that which is good, because of your exceedingly great riches. YEA,
- 27:17Speaker 1: woe be unto you because of your wickedness and abominations,
- 27:20Speaker 1: And except ye repent, ye shall perish. YEA even your
- 27:24Speaker 1: land shall be taken from you, and ye shall be
- 27:27Speaker 1: destroyed from off the face of the earth. Behold, now,
- 27:31Speaker 1: I do not say that these things shall be of myself,
- 27:34Speaker 1: because it is not of myself that I know these things.
- 27:38Speaker 1: But behold, I know that these things are true, because
- 27:41Speaker 1: the Lord God has made them known unto me. Therefore
- 27:45Speaker 1: I testify that they shall be end of Helimann, chapters
- 27:50Speaker 1: five through seven.
