Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to the Gill 1918 Project, a podcast series by
- 0:03coaches for coaches, powered by Gill Athletics.
- 0:05Think of it as the Ted Talks of track and field coaching.
- 0:08Short, insightful, and packed with valuable strategies to help
- 0:11you grow as a coach. This episode is part of the
- 0:13Youth and Beginner Series, brought to you by Coach O.
- 0:16In this series, we focus on topics relating to coaching
- 0:19youth athletes, coaching beginner athletes of any age,
- 0:21and supporting brand new coaches as they find their way.
- 0:24With that in mind, let's grow. What's up guys?
- 0:28It's your girl, Tiara Williams, also known as T, and I'm here to
- 0:32share my story and a few of my experiences to help you break
- 0:38into the track and field media world.
- 0:40Now let's get started. I used to do track.
- 0:43I was a heptathlete. I went to three different
- 0:45schools, but I finished at the Texas Tech University Record.
- 0:50Now, during my time at Tech, I was so into communications.
- 0:53Like I always knew as a kid I wanted to be a sideline
- 0:56reporter, but I didn't really know how to get there.
- 0:58So the first thing I learned was like, let's just get as good as
- 1:01we can in track and maybe that will let us get to that
- 1:04opportunity. I wouldn't say it worked like
- 1:06that. So I got an opportunity to work
- 1:09on high school meet. One of my teammates actually got
- 1:11in trouble because she was supposed to host it and she
- 1:14didn't want to. And I was like, you know what,
- 1:16coach, whatever, raise my hand, I'll do it.
- 1:18And lo and behold, I fell in love with the instantly on
- 1:20change. I made it to communications.
- 1:22I begin shadowing one of the main sideline reporters at the
- 1:25university. And then the story just begins
- 1:28to grow from there. Like I created my platform
- 1:31called Real Talk with T where I started to it really started as
- 1:34me uploading like my interviews to get feedback from people that
- 1:37maybe like become better at my craft.
- 1:39And then they just kind of just evolved to this safe space where
- 1:42I started doing like, live interviews with athletes, and it
- 1:46just started to grow into its own platform and it started to
- 1:48live by itself. That's not the quick version of
- 1:50my story. So my first media experience was
- 1:55at the Prefontaine Classic 2021, right after the Tokyo Olympics.
- 2:00Now, this is kind of what helped me break into the media space.
- 2:04I had a, it was like a press conference setting.
- 2:06It was security being questioned.
- 2:08You know, this is after all of her trials during the 20, the
- 2:10year of 2021. And I like raise my hand for a
- 2:13question. And I was like being a black
- 2:16woman from Texas, like myself. And she was just like, oh, and
- 2:18like her guards like automatically came down.
- 2:22You know, this is my first time ever having a media credential.
- 2:24I was in the media area. I was one of the only people
- 2:27that look like me that was so excited.
- 2:29I was so ready 'cause I'm like, This is why I always want to be,
- 2:33I always want to interview athletes like myself.
- 2:35And I did it in college on the lower scale, like when I had
- 2:38like meats and you know, they have athletes, we go like 2 days
- 2:40before conference and then we just kind of like chilling
- 2:43unless you're doing unless you're like Anna Hall.
- 2:45But so I would like when I came up from the library and like go
- 2:48around and interview my like fellow athletes.
- 2:50Like my first, one of my like first interviews would be with
- 2:54like TT Terry while we're while she's in college, I'm in college
- 2:58and we just kind of like, you know, I'm asking the basic
- 3:00questions. How do you feel?
- 3:03So yeah, the People 10 classic was my first ever like real life
- 3:07credential media experience. And that's what kind of like got
- 3:11me started. It's what kind of like allowed
- 3:12me to make noise. I feel like I've learned through
- 3:15that experience that it's all about how you approach athletes.
- 3:19Like, not so much the questions you ask are important as well,
- 3:23but I think given that level, that level of human, humanizing
- 3:26them and letting them allow them to feel comfortable and know
- 3:28that like no matter what is going on, I'm gonna still treat
- 3:32you like a human has gotten me so far on this journey.
- 3:36So as I'm entering my new, I guess, quote, UN quote, passion
- 3:41or profession of interviewing athletes, there are a few things
- 3:44that I've learned that I would love to share with y'all.
- 3:46And then we can talk about experiences that I've learned
- 3:48them through. So as I said already, it's all
- 3:50about your approach and how you first introduce yourself to the
- 3:54athlete. For example, I was, this is my
- 3:55first time ever meeting Shakari. So I'm like being a black woman,
- 3:58finding places where we can relate being a black woman.
- 4:00We're both black women from Texas or both from Texas.
- 4:03I feel like that kind of just let her know, like you're not
- 4:06the only one. We relate, you know, like even
- 4:08though I'm over here and you're over there, we still relate on a
- 4:11certain level. So ever since then, that first
- 4:15experience, it's been a snowball effect.
- 4:17I have to give God the glory. Like I did not imagine me being
- 4:21four years with this platform, being in his position so far
- 4:25from where I started, you know? And it was just so inspiring
- 4:28because it's like I see so much bigger.
- 4:30I see so many more things that I can incorporate.
- 4:33And we'll get into that a little later.
- 4:35But yeah, I'm just so grateful to be here.
- 4:37So since my first meet, I have been to every P Fontaine
- 4:42classic. Since my first one, I have been
- 4:44to the Olympic trials. I had been to the Olympics
- 4:49itself. I had a chance to work all the
- 4:52World Championships since the my first media credential, I got to
- 4:57work the first World Championships.
- 4:59That was in the US, Oregon 22. That's my first ever World
- 5:03Championships and I got to do it at home and I'm really grateful
- 5:06for that experience. But yeah, it's been so many
- 5:08things that has led me to be where I am right now.
- 5:13It all wasn't sunshine and rainbows, obviously.
- 5:15But as we continue to grow, that's I feel like that's what
- 5:18it takes to grow. Like you have to go through and
- 5:21learn and and understand what you're trying to accomplish
- 5:24before you even get to where you are.
- 5:27So I want to start off by talking about I feel like
- 5:30another athlete that's kind of helped me on my journey.
- 5:33I would have to say Sidney McLaughlin, Lebroni, she's been
- 5:36such a huge supporter on this, on this journey.
- 5:39I want to say like stepped out of her comfort zone when I asked
- 5:44her for things. And I think just like vice
- 5:46versa, she's obviously the best hurdler we've ever seen.
- 5:51We ever, I don't want to be, I want to be politically,
- 5:53politically correct. You know, I guess seen is not a
- 5:56real word. I think some people say.
- 5:57So she's the best hurdler ever to walk on God's green earth.
- 6:03And the fact that like she's 20, I think we're around the same
- 6:07age and we can kind of relate on that level.
- 6:09I think has helped me on my journey.
- 6:11For example, like going going, I want to rely back to like 2022
- 6:15where I just randomly DM D her and asked her like, do you want
- 6:20to do a live interview? You know, like, let me let me
- 6:22rely on a little bit to those live interviews and then we can
- 6:25get to the Sydney story. I started doing live interviews
- 6:28during the pandemic on Real talk with T only because everybody
- 6:33was on live. There was nothing to do, nowhere
- 6:35to go. I was like, let me try to make a
- 6:38way. And I just started doing live
- 6:39interviews. I wouldn't live thought in a
- 6:42million years that it would grow to what it is now.
- 6:44Like I met Grant Holloway through those live interviews.
- 6:48I met Jasmine Camacho Quinn through those live interviews.
- 6:51I've met Messiah Russell College Messiah Russell through those
- 6:55through those live interviews. I met College of being MO
- 6:59through those college interviews.
- 7:00I met so many of those of the of our greats through those college
- 7:05interviews. I mean, do those live interviews
- 7:07while I was in college. So I want to say like, it
- 7:10doesn't matter how you do it. Have a plan, have an idea.
- 7:14The only reason why I chose live was one because everybody was on
- 7:16there too. It's the perfect way to get your
- 7:20getting followers from their page and your followers to
- 7:23engage in the content. Like it's really a double
- 7:25whammy. Before collabs, it was collabs
- 7:28before collabs became a thing. So that was my plan.
- 7:30I was like, hey, if I can do this, it'll help me grow faster
- 7:33if I can continue to get people to come be a guest on this
- 7:36platform. So that's one thing I want to
- 7:38mention. I forgot to tell y'all how I got
- 7:40from pre it was live. It was definitely a era of
- 7:43stayed up live interviews and it was hard.
- 7:45I had like 5 viewers at one point.
- 7:47My first one ever was like Shelby McEwen and I had like 6
- 7:51viewers and all sitting there with my friends.
- 7:53I texted before like hey y'all hop on this live real quick and
- 7:56like I need some support. Drop some comments and drop some
- 7:59hearts or something you know? So it doesn't matter how you
- 8:02start you know it's just how you continue to stay consistent and
- 8:05work to get to where you want to be.
- 8:07Now I had to get that in. I back to the Sydney portion of
- 8:10the story now. Yeah.
- 8:11So I asked her to do a live interviews through her DMS.
- 8:14Like I asked a lot of people to do live interviews through their
- 8:16DMS and she she was gracious enough to let me do it.
- 8:20Like she wasn't really active on social like that.
- 8:23And it was her first live, I think from a long time.
- 8:26So for her trusting me that much to allow that space was great.
- 8:30And obviously I went on my way to make sure she was
- 8:32comfortable. Like, hey, do you want the
- 8:33comments off? Do you want me to do this?
- 8:35Do you want that like just to make because it's all about
- 8:37making the athlete feel comfortable enough to share,
- 8:40share their story. Like it's not about us as an
- 8:43interview. And I feel like some people get
- 8:44caught up in that, like trying to make your like, it's not
- 8:47about you being comfortable. It's not about you with all you
- 8:49want. It's not about your quote UN
- 8:51quote clicks or click bait type of situations.
- 8:54It's about the athlete, their story and what they want to come
- 8:57across. And that's what I continue to
- 8:58focus on throughout this whole journey.
- 9:01And I feel like that's how I've gotten this far.
- 9:05So yeah, since then, me and Cindy have done so many
- 9:07interviews. I feel like it's so down to
- 9:09earth the way that we could communicate with each other.
- 9:12And I think it makes a lot of people understand who she is
- 9:16more, you know what I'm saying? So I would say I've had a
- 9:20opportunity to grow in that aspect of just being
- 9:24comfortable. Being comfortable with just
- 9:25asking people like that was hard.
- 9:27Like just asking for stuff. Oh, my gosh.
- 9:30Oh, just, I just can't. I just couldn't do it.
- 9:33I was so bad at it, but I got good.
- 9:36I put my pride to the side and it didn't matter if they left me
- 9:39on red or if they responded. I had to get over that bridge.
- 9:41And that definitely helped me get over that bridge.
- 9:45Another epic moment in my career was another part of another
- 9:50security story. Shakari Richardson at the 2023
- 9:53trials in Budapest, going to Budapest.
- 9:57She took off her wig before she raised and she was talking.
- 10:01This is the relationship with the media was not the best.
- 10:03She didn't talk to anybody. She even told, I even asked her.
- 10:05She told me no. And then she kind of thought
- 10:07about it. She was like, you know what, for
- 10:08you, like, let's do it. And for me to get that special
- 10:11moment, let nobody else got. First of all, I was so stressed
- 10:16during the interview because everybody came to watch and I
- 10:18was just like, ah, I don't even know what to say.
- 10:20Like, what do we have to talk about?
- 10:22But then if you went great, she ended up giving me my flowers in
- 10:26that conversation. I think just understanding that,
- 10:29like, just because everybody else gets to know doesn't mean
- 10:32that it can't be a yes for you. And I feel like that situation
- 10:35kind of showed that aspect of things like, wow, even even in
- 10:39even in the trials of her not trusting the media, she still
- 10:42went on her way to be like, hey, let me hear what she has to ask
- 10:46me. I feel like those moments right
- 10:48there help me be more confident in, in my in my journalism work,
- 10:52because I do get a lot of criticism of not being a actual
- 10:55journalist, of being more of a content creator, which I like
- 10:58all the titles, journalist, content creator, wherever you
- 11:00want to go with it, I'm fine with that.
- 11:03So I just feel like just making the best of each moment has
- 11:08helped me get to where I am in this journey now.
- 11:12Yes, I did say I went to the Olympics, the 2024 Paris
- 11:15Olympics and it was such a dream trip.
- 11:18It was my 26th birthday. All the things happened, but one
- 11:21thing that didn't happen was I did not get approved for
- 11:23accreditation. And I was heartbroken.
- 11:26I was like, Dang, my first Olympic, I really want to be
- 11:28there. I really want to be in that mix
- 11:29zone. And This is why I say like the
- 11:32Lord, we determine our steps. We determine our plans, but the
- 11:35Lord determines our steps. And I want to say that because I
- 11:39was so upset and out work that I didn't get a credential and I
- 11:43still had a golden opportunity to host the Puma house out to
- 11:46the Puma fam. I love you all down.
- 11:48Thank you all for all that y'all had done and continue to do for
- 11:51my career. But the Puma house I got the
- 11:53chance to host that space and it was so amazing.
- 11:55I got a chance to host a Sprint panel with like, Sharika
- 12:00Jackson, Julian Alfred, Marcel Jacobs and under the grass the
- 12:04day before they raced in Paris. Like, I still got these golden
- 12:07opportunities. I was able to do interviews with
- 12:08all the Puma athletes in the space.
- 12:10And I wanted to tell this part of being disappointed and not
- 12:14knowing what's ahead. I was so disappointed about not
- 12:17being able to see my American athlete friends.
- 12:20Like, yeah, Puma has a few Americans, but not all of them,
- 12:22you know, And I, I've followed them all this journey, all of
- 12:26these years to get to this space, literally from 1 Olympics
- 12:29to the next. I was so disappointed that I
- 12:30couldn't be able to convene with my fellow American athletes, my
- 12:34friends. And such a special moment came
- 12:37from the Olympics that I could not even prepare for.
- 12:40In 2023, Messiah Russell fell, hit a hurdle in the final in
- 12:45Budapest. I think it was a semifinal.
- 12:47She hit a hurdle, she fell. And we end up having this like
- 12:50passionate conversation, emotional conversation.
- 12:53She was upset. I could clearly see she was
- 12:55upset. I even offered to like, hey,
- 12:57let's, let's turn off the, let's cut the interview shorts.
- 13:00Like, no, like, let's keep going.
- 13:01And she basically cried and just basically said that scripture
- 13:03that I just said, we make our plans, but the Lord determines
- 13:06our steps. And I was able to take that
- 13:09moment from 2023 to put it to her 2024 Olympic glory.
- 13:14And it just went viral everywhere.
- 13:17Like it was such a powerful video to show like from one year
- 13:23to the next, you don't even know what God has in store for you.
- 13:27And I just feel like that was such what I needed to hear
- 13:30myself. That's why I just said the
- 13:31scripture opening up this story because I'd be so caught up in
- 13:35the moment. Like, even with this
- 13:37championships, we'll get into that, but I don't have a
- 13:38credential for this one either. And I was so upset.
- 13:41But it's just like, relax, like you can make your plans, but the
- 13:45Lord is what is who's going to determine these steps?
- 13:47So just stay the course. I just want to say that to
- 13:50anybody who needs a little bit of encouragement or who just
- 13:53feels like things aren't going your way or like, you know, you
- 13:57just not giving the you're not being dealt the right hands.
- 13:59Like don't feel like it's not for a reason, You know, like God
- 14:03is putting us through this for a reason.
- 14:05That's bringing to my next point.
- 14:07I didn't get a credentials for Tokyo, but I'm still going to be
- 14:10in the building. Of course.
- 14:13I have created the space called the Content House where athletes
- 14:17can come through for all the vibes when they're done
- 14:20competing. I have so many ideas for this
- 14:23space. This is just the beginning of
- 14:25it. I don't I just I took it upon
- 14:27myself that I don't think in Paris, for example, I didn't
- 14:31have a credential and I still got made the best of that moment
- 14:34and I took that energy to bring it to Tokyo.
- 14:36I don't have a credential, but that doesn't mean I can't make
- 14:38the best of this moment. So the content house is going to
- 14:41be literally filled with games, interviews, photos.
- 14:44We have all the things you're looking for in Tokyo.
- 14:48So I've been doing a whole bunch of promotion.
- 14:50I had brought on other creators so out to Denise Spam from Speak
- 14:54Your Piece and I wanted this to eventually be a space to where
- 14:58creators I can bring creators in to come be to create and then
- 15:03also have the athletes come in. It's kind of like a just a big
- 15:06house where everybody can just chill, good vibes, good energy
- 15:09and get work done. So that's what's going on in
- 15:13Tokyo. I have so many things planned,
- 15:15so make sure you're following all my social media platforms.
- 15:19You can find me on YouTube at real talk with T.
- 15:21You can find me on Instagram, TikTok at real talk with T, and
- 15:24I'm also on X at real talk with TI.
- 15:27Just want to say like it's not about God has a final say, you
- 15:33know, like it don't matter what people, how people move around
- 15:36you to make things harder for you to make things more
- 15:39difficult for you. God has a final say and I want
- 15:43to leave y'all with my favorite scripture.
- 15:47Let us not go weary in doing good for in the proper time, for
- 15:52at the proper time, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
- 15:56And I feel like that's what I live and breathe by.
- 16:00Like, no matter what comes my way, no matter what
- 16:04circumstances I have to go through, I'm going to do good in
- 16:07all situations because God says we will reap the harvest.
- 16:12So thank you all so much for tuning into this episode of the
