- 0:03Speaker 1: FT fam, look at who I have. I have the
- 0:05Speaker 1: distinguished honor to present you, A.J. Pruszynski, no, Carl Rabbitt
- 0:12Speaker 1: hosting for the very first time one of my favorite
- 0:17Speaker 1: listens in all of the game.
- 0:21Speaker 2: So, quick story before we get started as a host.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Thank you very much for having me. I'm honored to
- 0:27Speaker 2: be on with both you guys. I know we've done
- 0:29Speaker 2: this before, but Korean baseball fans, We do overnight. First
- 0:36Speaker 2: ever Korean baseball game starts at 525 a.m. Eastern time.
- 0:41Speaker 2: I'm the play-by-play guy. At about 515 a.m. Eastern time,
- 0:47Speaker 2: we get a message from Korea. Consider I'm in Connecticut,
- 0:52Speaker 2: Eduardo Perez is in Miami, Florida. We get a message
- 0:54Speaker 2: from Korea at 515 a.m. Eastern time. The game you're
- 0:59Speaker 2: supposed to do is rained out. So any studying, preparing
- 1:04Speaker 2: rosters of two teams we know nothing about, now we
- 1:09Speaker 2: know less about because the game is shifting. Two new
- 1:13Speaker 2: teams come on. I then am told what the two
- 1:16Speaker 2: teams are. I print from my bedroom, which is where
- 1:20Speaker 2: we're doing the KBO game from, to a computer in
- 1:22Speaker 2: the other room the new rosters of the teams of
- 1:26Speaker 2: the games we're calling. I cruise in, I pick up
- 1:30Speaker 2: the sheets of paper, I roll back to my room,
- 1:33Speaker 2: and I'm listening through the headphones on the desk in
- 1:36Speaker 2: my bedroom. Welcome to the KBO. And it's Eduardo Perez,
- 1:42Speaker 2: who actually was the first voice ever heard on a
- 1:46Speaker 2: KBO broadcast in the United States, because at 525, I'm
- 1:51Speaker 2: not expecting the game to start. I figure every game
- 1:54Speaker 2: we do, you start at the top or bottom of
- 1:56Speaker 2: every hour. So The fact that you welcomed me as
- 2:00Speaker 2: your host, I'm grateful for. It's the second show that
- 2:04Speaker 2: I was supposed to sort of be the guy that
- 2:07Speaker 2: runs things and leads things. And some other voice is
- 2:10Speaker 2: the first one I heard. So you and Eduardo Perez
- 2:13Speaker 2: now have that in common. Although this time I actually
- 2:16Speaker 2: was seated where I was supposed to be. I got
- 2:18Speaker 2: a rundown listed here. I'm excited about the show. In
- 2:22Speaker 2: that case, I had no idea what we were doing,
- 2:25Speaker 2: who we were talking about. And that's a long story
- 2:28Speaker 2: made a little bit shorter that could have gone a
- 2:30Speaker 2: lot longer. So, Kratzy and AJ, thanks very much for
- 2:34Speaker 2: having me. Looking forward to the next couple of hours
- 2:36Speaker 2: here on Marquee and, of course, on YouTube and talking
- 2:39Speaker 2: about the series that are going on. Joe Maddon is
- 2:42Speaker 2: going to join us, so it's going to be really good.
- 2:44Speaker 2: With that being said, it's time now.
- 2:45Speaker 3: Hey, Carl, hold on.
- 2:46Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Hold on. Are we going to have to have someone
- 2:49Speaker 3: call KBO games this spring also?
- 2:51Speaker 2: That's a great question.
- 2:53Speaker 3: I mean, too soon maybe?
- 2:54Speaker 5: TBD.
- 2:56Speaker 2: TBD. TBD. Best pitcher in the game.
- 2:58Speaker 6: TBD.
- 2:59Speaker 2: I will say that that did spawn a generation. As
- 3:03Speaker 2: you guys know, it ultimately led to what's happening with
- 3:06Speaker 2: this program. Like people didn't need to leave their homes.
- 3:09Speaker 2: You could do games from home. The live from home kit. Oh,
- 3:13Speaker 2: I don't trust me. I'd rather be there. But the
- 3:16Speaker 2: live from home kit that I have is LFH live
- 3:21Speaker 2: from home 01. It's the first one. It should be
- 3:25Speaker 2: put into... some museum, because that really did spawn an
- 3:29Speaker 2: entire generation of what people are doing now. All right,
- 3:33Speaker 2: let's get to it. Time for Full Count.
- 3:36Speaker 3: It's a full count.
- 3:43Speaker 2: And Full Count is fueled by Marathon. All right, so AJ,
- 3:47Speaker 2: we're going to get to your game, which is arguably
- 3:49Speaker 2: one of the great games ever. But as you told
- 3:51Speaker 2: me a few minutes ago, before we deal with Brewers Padres,
- 3:55Speaker 2: let's not sleep on Braves-Dodgers and how great that game
- 3:59Speaker 2: was and all the things that happened in it. Michael
- 4:02Speaker 2: Harris with the triple down the line and Walt Weiss
- 4:05Speaker 2: kind of playing blackjack and roulette with the bullpen game.
- 4:09Speaker 2: You know, I think the thing that has stood out, fellas,
- 4:12Speaker 2: and you tell me how you feel about it, the
- 4:13Speaker 2: thing that has stood out in all of these games,
- 4:17Speaker 2: in all of these series, has been the bullpen work
- 4:21Speaker 2: of all the teams that have really had success. I mean,
- 4:23Speaker 2: if you think about the Brewers, You think about the
- 4:25Speaker 2: White Sox. You know, you think about the Braves. The Braves'
- 4:30Speaker 2: bullpen and what Walt Weiss did to rest Chris Sale
- 4:33Speaker 2: and win a series versus a game, I thought was absolutely– look,
- 4:37Speaker 2: it turned out to be genius, but I thought it
- 4:40Speaker 2: was orchestrated incredibly well and another reminder of how great
- 4:44Speaker 2: Robert Suarez really is. AJ, your thoughts?
- 4:48Speaker 3: Robert Suarez.
- 4:48Speaker 2: I mean, Kerr.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Let's not forget about Kerr at the start of the
- 4:51Speaker 3: game going out and just shoving. Dodgers were like, man,
- 4:54Speaker 3: what was this guy? I've never seen pitches like this before, right?
- 4:58Speaker 3: Holmes came in, Suarez came in. It was a masterfully
- 5:01Speaker 3: played game by the Braves. And this is what happens
- 5:03Speaker 3: when bullpen games go right. If everybody's on and they're
- 5:07Speaker 3: all doing the whole thing right, and every guy comes
- 5:09Speaker 3: in and gets out of the situation they're supposed to
- 5:11Speaker 3: get in, this can happen. Now, if they go wrong,
- 5:14Speaker 3: we've seen it go wrong in other times where runs
- 5:17Speaker 3: just are given up left and right because guys get
- 5:19Speaker 3: out of where they're supposed to be, the little pocket
- 5:21Speaker 3: they're supposed to be in, but Yeah, the Braves deserve
- 5:24Speaker 3: a ton of credit. Listen, Snell, they got Snell out
- 5:27Speaker 3: of the game early. They got into the Dodgers' bullpen,
- 5:29Speaker 3: which we all know is a weakness for them. Michael
- 5:31Speaker 3: Harris with a huge triple, scores on a wild pitch,
- 5:34Speaker 3: gets that third run. It was just a well-played game
- 5:38Speaker 3: by the Braves, and they deserve to win this game.
- 5:40Speaker 3: And now they have Sale going in game three. So
- 5:42Speaker 3: Dodgers in trouble? I don't know.
- 5:44Speaker 1: I'm never counting them out. But this is a good
- 5:46Speaker 1: scenario for the Braves. This is the best-case scenario for
- 5:49Speaker 1: the Braves because now they got Chris Sale going. Michael Harris,
- 5:52Speaker 1: not just one big hit, three hits. He needed the
- 5:54Speaker 1: homer to Brock Holt because Brock Holt's been the only
- 5:57Speaker 1: person to ever hit for the cycle in the postseason.
- 6:00Speaker 1: So he was that close. I texted Brock about that.
- 6:03Speaker 1: I'm like, I don't want anybody else to have your
- 6:04Speaker 1: record because it's your record. But my biggest thing is
- 6:08Speaker 1: Walt Weiss did what I don't think a lot of
- 6:11Speaker 1: managers in– and we're saying this because they won– But
- 6:15Speaker 1: he did what I don't think a lot of managers
- 6:17Speaker 1: do in this situation, is he saw Grant Holmes, needed
- 6:22Speaker 1: to give him three innings, and you know what? He
- 6:25Speaker 1: pulled the hook real quick on him, and he found
- 6:28Speaker 1: those three innings from somebody else. And what Didier Fuentes did.
- 6:32Speaker 1: The fact that he was able to see him go
- 6:35Speaker 1: out for that ninth inning, Walt Weiss allowed that.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Yes, I get it. He gave it to Max Muncy-Homer.
- 6:41Speaker 1: But, man, just I think incredibly managed game by a really,
- 6:46Speaker 1: really inexperienced manager in the postseason that showed he sees
- 6:51Speaker 1: what's going on.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, look, you guys tell me this. AJ, I'll
- 6:56Speaker 2: start with you. You're both catchers, right? Historically, having sat
- 7:00Speaker 2: on that set for so long and witnessed managers, I
- 7:03Speaker 2: think what Kratzy's bringing up is a really interesting salient
- 7:06Speaker 2: point because I think the biggest and most difficult decisions
- 7:10Speaker 2: are when do we go and get somebody? And I
- 7:14Speaker 2: think interesting to look at the Blake Snell decision in
- 7:18Speaker 2: this game, I think, is a question that Dodger fans
- 7:21Speaker 2: would ask. Too soon? I know we'll talk about the Padres,
- 7:25Speaker 2: but Michael King being yanked when he did, and this
- 7:27Speaker 2: was a no-hit guy who gave up three hits and
- 7:29Speaker 2: hit a batter. Was that too soon? But what role, AJ,
- 7:32Speaker 2: and Kratzy follow, what role does the catcher play in
- 7:36Speaker 2: the decisions that Walt Weiss has made and that others
- 7:39Speaker 2: have made when you say to the manager or the
- 7:43Speaker 2: pitching coach, Yeah, I don't see it. I think we've
- 7:47Speaker 2: lost what we had, or I'd ride him out. I'm
- 7:50Speaker 2: wondering where the decisions come from, because Kratzy's point is,
- 7:54Speaker 2: I love the idea that Walt Weiss trusted his gut.
- 7:56Speaker 2: I think Dave Roberts trusts his gut. I think certain
- 7:59Speaker 2: managers have the ability to kind of go with what
- 8:01Speaker 2: they see. AJ, your thoughts on a catcher's impact on
- 8:04Speaker 2: all that?
- 8:05Speaker 3: Well, Carl, Dave Roberts used to not trust his gut,
- 8:08Speaker 3: because if you remember, back when he first started doing
- 8:12Speaker 3: the postseason, he was taking guys out way too early.
- 8:14Speaker 3: And then their bullpen was faltering. And then Blake Snell
- 8:17Speaker 3: happened against the Dodgers in 2020 in Texas. And they raised,
- 8:21Speaker 3: took Blake Snell out too early. Dodgers come back, win
- 8:24Speaker 3: the world series against him after they were, he was untouchable. Right?
- 8:27Speaker 3: So here's where it ranks for me. Catchers input used
- 8:31Speaker 3: to matter a lot. I mean, I remember pitching coaches,
- 8:34Speaker 3: managers would come up to you after an inning and say, Hey,
- 8:36Speaker 3: what do you think? How many more can we get
- 8:38Speaker 3: out of them? How much does he have left in
- 8:40Speaker 3: the tank? And you give them an honest answer. Now,
- 8:42Speaker 3: I don't think catchers have any input unless they're, unless
- 8:45Speaker 3: maybe a Sal Perez, maybe a JT Real Muto, someone
- 8:48Speaker 3: like that. But these young guys, they don't have any input.
- 8:50Speaker 3: It's all, I keep saying this, but it's all scripted.
- 8:53Speaker 3: It's all like, okay, let me look at a wristband.
- 8:56Speaker 3: I need to call this pitch because this is what
- 8:57Speaker 3: it says to throw on this count. And then when
- 8:59Speaker 3: they go to the dugout, they have meeting after meeting
- 9:02Speaker 3: after meeting. When you talk to Carl, you know, you've
- 9:03Speaker 3: done games. You talk to these managers, they say, hey,
- 9:07Speaker 3: we got this for this many hitters. And then we
- 9:09Speaker 3: have this, this, this, this in the line, in the
- 9:11Speaker 3: bullpen ready to go. And if he gets to this point,
- 9:14Speaker 3: he's coming out. And if he gets farther than that,
- 9:17Speaker 3: it'll be a miracle. And we're basically hoping and praying
- 9:20Speaker 3: that he gets that far. So it is all predetermined.
- 9:23Speaker 3: And they all have cards. Every manager has a card
- 9:25Speaker 3: that says, hey, green light, red light, whatever it is.
- 9:28Speaker 3: And you go from there. So I don't think the
- 9:30Speaker 3: catchers have a lot of input unless they're a veteran
- 9:32Speaker 3: guy that's been around a manager a long time and
- 9:34Speaker 3: they trust them. Other than that, it's all computer generated.
- 9:38Speaker 3: When should I bring this person in? When should I
- 9:40Speaker 3: bring this person in?
- 9:41Speaker 2: But AJ and Kratzy, I mean, last night, Walt Weiss
- 9:44Speaker 2: basically acknowledged we were going to go two and two.
- 9:46Speaker 2: And my guy was throwing so well, I didn't change him.
- 9:49Speaker 2: And I got the impression from Roberts over the course
- 9:52Speaker 2: of last year and this season when we did Dodger games,
- 9:58Speaker 2: when you've won the World Series a few times. times,
- 10:00Speaker 2: I think you feel, whether the organization feels that way,
- 10:05Speaker 2: I think you feel like you have a little bit
- 10:07Speaker 2: more ability to make the decision. I think Alex Cora
- 10:11Speaker 2: developed that. I do think you can kind of work
- 10:14Speaker 2: yourself into that. You know, I don't give a crap
- 10:18Speaker 2: kind of mentality with an eye to that script that
- 10:21Speaker 2: you're talking about.
- 10:22Speaker 3: But that's the manager, Carl, not the catcher. That's the
- 10:24Speaker 3: manager has to earn that. No, I get that part.
- 10:27Speaker 3: But you said they all have cards. They do, but
- 10:30Speaker 3: most of them follow him and the younger guys, especially
- 10:33Speaker 3: Murph doesn't. Murph doesn't.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Dave Roberts has earned that right. Walt Weiss is a
- 10:37Speaker 2: former player.
- 10:38Speaker 3: He's not going to. And I don't think Anthopolis is
- 10:40Speaker 3: in his ear telling him exactly what to do. Right.
- 10:42Speaker 3: But there's, you know, Craig Stammen, he has A.J. Preller
- 10:45Speaker 3: and he has about 12 guys that are in there.
- 10:47Speaker 2: No question.
- 10:48Speaker 3: And listen, I don't know how it goes, but Mason
- 10:51Speaker 3: Miller was slated to pitch two innings yesterday. He threw
- 10:53Speaker 3: 40 pitches yesterday. He's never thrown 40 pitches in his career.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Right.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Or at least from the bullpen.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Sorry.
- 10:59Speaker 3: So he's never done that forever. So that was the plan.
- 11:03Speaker 3: He said before the game, hey, he's going to go
- 11:04Speaker 3: at least two innings in the eighth inning. Here he came.
- 11:07Speaker 6: Right.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Boom.
- 11:07Speaker 2: So it's all. hey, this guy, this guy, this guy.
- 11:10Speaker 3: And then we get to our closer, we'll worry about
- 11:12Speaker 3: it from there. But, yes, it's a feel thing, and
- 11:15Speaker 3: the great managers are great at knowing when to bring
- 11:17Speaker 3: guys in and out.
- 11:19Speaker 1: And it doesn't mean you're a bad manager if you
- 11:20Speaker 1: don't have that feel. It's just where that little edge
- 11:25Speaker 1: can help your team win. I mean, there's no way
- 11:28Speaker 1: Craig Stammen would be like, no chance we're using Mason
- 11:32Speaker 1: Miller for two innings. Maybe there was a way that
- 11:34Speaker 1: they could try to steal another out before they bring
- 11:37Speaker 1: Mason in. Another way that they could get another out
- 11:42Speaker 1: or two before bringing him in because you're going into
- 11:45Speaker 1: an area where you just don't quite know.
- 11:48Speaker 2: He didn't know.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Walt Weiss didn't know what he was going to get
- 11:51Speaker 1: out of Didier Fuentes. He knew what he saw. He
- 11:55Speaker 1: knew what he has done. Sorry, Vladimir Guerrero. Sorry you're
- 11:58Speaker 1: being brought up in the postseason right now. But it
- 12:00Speaker 1: is about what you did before that gives you the
- 12:03Speaker 1: cachet to be able to say, I like it. I
- 12:06Speaker 1: know we have Rysel Iglesias up in the pen. We're
- 12:10Speaker 1: going to stick with Didier because the other hitters on
- 12:13Speaker 1: the other team are telling us exactly what your stuff
- 12:16Speaker 1: looks like.
- 12:19Speaker 2: When you look ahead to Game 3, it feels like
- 12:21Speaker 2: everybody's putting a ton of pressure on like somehow because
- 12:26Speaker 2: Chris Sale got the extra day of rest, is it automatic?
- 12:30Speaker 2: And look, Braves have it right where they want them
- 12:33Speaker 2: with Sale getting the extra day of rest. But Yamamoto
- 12:38Speaker 2: is fishing for the Dodgers. I guess after two games,
- 12:42Speaker 2: you'd want Sale on full rest and you feel great
- 12:45Speaker 2: about it. But it does feel like there's a lot
- 12:47Speaker 2: of folks who were suggesting Chris Sale, Braves go up
- 12:50Speaker 2: 2-1 in this series. Is that true? Would you think
- 12:54Speaker 2: that's the way people feel, Cransey? And is that what
- 12:57Speaker 2: Chris Sale wants on his shoulders? I assume knowing him
- 12:59Speaker 2: and having sat with him in Williamsport, it's exactly what
- 13:02Speaker 2: he wants on his shoulders.
- 13:04Speaker 1: It 100% is what he wants. I mean, this dude
- 13:07Speaker 1: came out of the pen in game three of the
- 13:11Speaker 1: Phillies Brave Series. Not because he had to or because
- 13:14Speaker 1: he got asked to. It's because he wanted to. That
- 13:17Speaker 1: is the difference between a number one and an ace.
- 13:20Speaker 1: That's the difference between a guy with a great career
- 13:22Speaker 1: and a Hall of Fame career. And Chris Sale is 100%.
- 13:26Speaker 1: He will rise to the occasion. Will he do great?
- 13:29Speaker 2: I have no idea.
- 13:30Speaker 1: But if you're a team that battled through this game,
- 13:33Speaker 1: and I think at the end they said, yeah, they
- 13:35Speaker 1: were on fumes, and now they have an opportunity to refuel,
- 13:39Speaker 1: kind of ironic for our marathon segment, they're refueled. And
- 13:43Speaker 1: not only are they refueled, but they're ready to go
- 13:44Speaker 1: pedal to the metal with their best pitcher.
- 13:47Speaker 2: And you know what?
- 13:48Speaker 1: This sets them up to go up 2-1. The issue
- 13:51Speaker 1: is you're facing the World Series MVP last year in Yamamoto,
- 13:56Speaker 1: and it is going to be an epic matchup.
- 14:01Speaker 3: Carl, I did this game. I did this game about,
- 14:04Speaker 3: I don't know, a month and a half ago. You
- 14:06Speaker 3: know what the score is? Sale versus Yamamoto in Atlanta.
- 14:09Speaker 3: Do you know what the score was in that game? 6-5? One, nothing, one, nothing,
- 14:15Speaker 3: a lead off home run by Drake Baldwin. And it
- 14:18Speaker 3: was one, nothing. And it was about two hours and
- 14:20Speaker 3: one minute on a Fox game on a Thursday night.
- 14:23Speaker 3: It was one of the best pitch games I've ever
- 14:25Speaker 3: seen in my life. Chris sale punched out. I mean,
- 14:28Speaker 3: he went CG punched out. I think 11 in that game, Yamamoto,
- 14:32Speaker 3: I think went seven or eight. I forget exactly what he,
- 14:35Speaker 3: what the line score was, but it was an Epic game.
- 14:37Speaker 3: And after the game, I went in both clubhouses, talked to,
- 14:41Speaker 3: Dave Roberts, and he was like, that's the best stuff
- 14:43Speaker 3: I've ever seen from a pitcher. I mean, you know,
- 14:45Speaker 3: against their lefties, with what he was throwing. He was
- 14:47Speaker 3: throwing 100. Chris Sale was throwing 100. And then Yamamoto
- 14:51Speaker 3: literally gave up a home run to Drake Baldwin, leadoff
- 14:53Speaker 3: hitter of the game. After that, just shoved it against
- 14:55Speaker 3: the Braves. It was one of the best games I've
- 14:56Speaker 3: ever seen. And I hope we get that again in
- 14:58Speaker 3: game three because that is the expectations. With these two
- 15:01Speaker 3: guys taking the mound, the expectations are Chris Sale is
- 15:04Speaker 3: going to go out and shove, and Yamamoto, because of
- 15:06Speaker 3: his pedigree in the postseason, is going to go out
- 15:08Speaker 3: and shove. And I'm rooting for it. I'm sorry I'm
- 15:10Speaker 3: a hitter. But I also love to see great starting
- 15:12Speaker 3: pitching matchups. And when they become what we expect them
- 15:15Speaker 3: to become, it's the best thing in baseball.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Yeah, so you're here for that. I guess just sort
- 15:20Speaker 2: of a summary on this, and we'll talk more about it. Kratzy,
- 15:24Speaker 2: it felt like all year the Dodgers were more vulnerable
- 15:28Speaker 2: than everybody that is bleeding Dodger blue thought they would be.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Is this just another kind of tap on the shoulder
- 15:35Speaker 2: to suggest, you know what, Otani hasn't hit. They're pitching
- 15:41Speaker 2: as good as they've been with as deep as they are.
- 15:44Speaker 2: There have been too many downs versus so many ups.
- 15:48Speaker 2: They put together, I don't know what, a two-and-a-half really
- 15:51Speaker 2: good streak there at the end of the season, and
- 15:54Speaker 2: now all of a sudden you get a 1-1 series
- 15:57Speaker 2: against Atlanta, and the conversation is, yeah, they've been vulnerable
- 16:01Speaker 2: all year. This is another case of this.
- 16:04Speaker 1: But this is not when you just put a 30,000-year-old
- 16:08Speaker 1: Dodgers in 2026. I think it is the fact that
- 16:13Speaker 1: we are overlooking what 100 wins in the regular season
- 16:17Speaker 1: actually means. The Dodgers were definitely a, from a Dodgers standpoint,
- 16:23Speaker 1: maybe a little bit up and down team. Yes, the
- 16:26Speaker 1: second half, the offense was, you know, middle of the road.
- 16:30Speaker 1: They still won 100 games. They've still won the last
- 16:33Speaker 1: two World Series. And my friend to my To my
- 16:37Speaker 1: right here, and A.J. Pruszynski has said the entire season,
- 16:40Speaker 1: until somebody beats them, they will be number one in
- 16:42Speaker 1: his power rankings. Not afraid of where the Dodgers are
- 16:47Speaker 1: at if you're a Dodgers fan, but as a Braves fan,
- 16:50Speaker 1: you're super juiced of where your team is.
- 16:56Speaker 2: What do you think, A.J.? Vulnerable?
- 16:58Speaker 1: Listen.
- 16:59Speaker 2: They're vulnerable.
- 17:00Speaker 3: They've been vulnerable. They could have lost to the Blue Jays.
- 17:03Speaker 3: The Padres had them a couple years ago. Remember when
- 17:05Speaker 3: they threw the bullpen game and shut them out the
- 17:08Speaker 3: last two games and went on to win that World Series?
- 17:10Speaker 3: The Dodgers are vulnerable because the biggest thing about the
- 17:12Speaker 3: Dodgers is their offense hasn't been where it is and
- 17:14Speaker 3: their bullpen hasn't been as great as we think it's
- 17:17Speaker 3: going to be. There are moments if you can get
- 17:19Speaker 3: a guy out, if you can get Yamamoto out in
- 17:21Speaker 3: the fifth or the sixth and have to get to
- 17:23Speaker 3: that bullpen, you have a chance against these guys. The
- 17:26Speaker 3: thing is no team's been able to do it in
- 17:28Speaker 3: hit the knockout.
- 17:29Speaker 2: Blow, right?
- 17:30Speaker 3: Teams have kind of pointed them, pointed them, pointed them,
- 17:32Speaker 3: and the Dodgers, wham, right, at the end. So you've
- 17:35Speaker 3: got to hit the knockout blow, and no one's been
- 17:36Speaker 3: able to do that. But, hey, if you're the Braves
- 17:38Speaker 3: and you say, we're going home, we have Sale and Molly,
- 17:40Speaker 3: our best two pitchers lined up, our bullpen's going to
- 17:42Speaker 3: be rested and ready to go, that's as good of
- 17:45Speaker 3: a shot as you get. It's a lot like the
- 17:46Speaker 3: Padres had a couple years ago. They couldn't get it done.
- 17:49Speaker 3: We'll see if the Braves can't.
- 17:51Speaker 2: All right, and the whole Yandy Diaz, Andy Pahez thing, Yandy,
- 17:56Speaker 2: let's not be afraid to challenge if there's a pitch
- 17:59Speaker 2: we don't think is a bad call or a good call,
- 18:02Speaker 2: and Andy Pahez, you no longer have the right to
- 18:05Speaker 2: do that, as Dave Roberts said. We're going to pull
- 18:07Speaker 2: that plug on you for now. Full count is fueled
- 18:10Speaker 2: by Marathon, where fun runs on full. Save up to
- 18:13Speaker 2: a dollar a gallon with Marathon rewards. So, boys, Alden Gonzalez.
- 18:20Speaker 2: This is why David Ortiz retired years ago. Eight teams
- 18:24Speaker 2: have played 12 division series games thus far. Their combined
- 18:28Speaker 2: slash line, you can't even see. It's brutally hard to hit,
- 18:32Speaker 2: which kind of goes back to what we talked about
- 18:34Speaker 2: with the bullpens. But it is remarkable. Every arm that
- 18:38Speaker 2: comes out, they all throw 98, 99, 100 miles an hour.
- 18:40Speaker 2: It's a joke. Yeah.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, and that's why Joey Votto said 300 hitters
- 18:49Speaker 3: would hit 240, including himself. He did 242. That was
- 18:52Speaker 3: also a joke. But anyways, we don't have time for that.
- 18:55Speaker 3: The pitching is really good, Carl. It's really good.
- 18:57Speaker 7: And you know what?
- 18:58Speaker 3: With the off days built in, you only get the
- 19:00Speaker 3: A relievers. You don't get the B, C underbelly.
- 19:03Speaker 2: You get A reliever, A reliever, A reliever in a
- 19:05Speaker 2: match if they want.
- 19:06Speaker 3: It makes it really hard. That's why contact and dudes
- 19:09Speaker 3: that can hit homers are important in the postseason. So important.
- 19:13Speaker 2: So important. You know what, the other thing, Cratchley, sorry
- 19:17Speaker 2: to cut you off. The other thing that this speaks
- 19:19Speaker 2: to is the idea that small market teams, you find
- 19:24Speaker 2: guys that can throw 90 miles an hour, 95 to
- 19:26Speaker 2: 102 miles. They can compete with teams that have big money.
- 19:32Speaker 2: If you stay healthy and you get these days off
- 19:35Speaker 2: and these guys emerge and develop, the Brewers are a
- 19:37Speaker 2: great example, you can beat the Dodgers. You can beat
- 19:41Speaker 2: any team. You can beat the Yankees. The Rays are
- 19:43Speaker 2: likely going to show it in this series too. I mean,
- 19:46Speaker 2: that's to me an equalizer, and more so than everybody.
- 19:50Speaker 3: 100%.
- 19:52Speaker 1: And I need to come up with a stat during
- 19:53Speaker 1: a regular season that may be a precursor to the postseason.
- 19:57Speaker 1: And it really is what A.J.
- 19:58Speaker 6: Said.
- 19:59Speaker 1: What are you doing against the threes, fours, and fives
- 20:02Speaker 1: in rotation and the fives, sixes, and sevens in the bullpen? Like,
- 20:07Speaker 1: there was a lot of games where the Phillies came
- 20:09Speaker 1: back this year. Oh, ninth inning, this is a magical team. Like,
- 20:13Speaker 1: they're coming back against the Nationals four times during the year.
- 20:16Speaker 1: They're coming back against the Angels. They're coming back against
- 20:20Speaker 1: the Giants, who manager was making bad choices in the
- 20:24Speaker 1: ninth inning. Like, that stuff doesn't happen in the postseason.
- 20:27Speaker 1: You got to get your hits like Jackson Churio did
- 20:30Speaker 1: against Mason Miller. Like, that's what's happening in the postseason.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Hitting is tough, and that's why the homer– Absolutely plays.
- 20:39Speaker 2: All right. So Carson Bench respectfully believes he's deserving of
- 20:42Speaker 2: the National League Rookie of the Year award. I don't know, Sal,
- 20:46Speaker 2: but he seems like a great dude. He's a Jesus man,
- 20:48Speaker 2: which I love. He seems like a great person. But
- 20:51Speaker 2: I feel like I'd be deserving of the award in
- 20:53Speaker 2: the most humble way possible. I don't mean to come
- 20:55Speaker 2: off cocky. I think I deserve it. I think I
- 20:58Speaker 2: showed in the whole season and all facets of the
- 21:01Speaker 2: game that I did a pretty good job showcasing my talent.
- 21:03Speaker 2: But there's definitely other good rookies out there. Carson Bench
- 21:09Speaker 2: of the New York Mets. Yeah, I mean, it's hard
- 21:14Speaker 2: to not come across a little cocky when you're putting
- 21:17Speaker 2: yourself out there and saying, I'm better than everybody and
- 21:21Speaker 2: associating Sal with different things off the field. What do
- 21:24Speaker 2: you got, AJ?
- 21:26Speaker 3: Sal Stewart hit 30 and 100 this year.
- 21:30Speaker 2: I don't even know.
- 21:30Speaker 3: Yeah, Carson Bench, you had a nice year.
- 21:32Speaker 2: You did great, blah, blah, blah.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Maybe in a different year, Carson. But Sal Stewart played
- 21:36Speaker 3: every day. He had 30 and 100. And that's it.
- 21:41Speaker 3: That's the argument. I know those counting numbers don't matter
- 21:43Speaker 3: as much anymore because it's all about war and four
- 21:46Speaker 3: and poor and s'more and everything else we got. But
- 21:49Speaker 3: Sal Stewart, to me, is the rookie of the year.
- 21:50Speaker 3: With the year he had, hitting in the middle of
- 21:52Speaker 3: the lineup every single day, he's the rookie of the year.
- 21:55Speaker 3: And it should be a runaway, honestly.
- 21:59Speaker 2: I love when guys say what they think. Say it
- 22:01Speaker 2: with your chest.
- 22:02Speaker 1: I don't think Carson's out of line for believing what
- 22:06Speaker 1: he said. I think, you know, maybe there's a analytical
- 22:10Speaker 1: voter that's going to vote because Carson's war is over
- 22:15Speaker 1: twice that of Sal Stewart's, but 30 and 100 as
- 22:19Speaker 1: a rookie, that's tough for me to ignore. It's also
- 22:23Speaker 1: tough for me to ignore that Carson Bench also had
- 22:27Speaker 1: a really good year and he should be up there
- 22:28Speaker 1: in the voting also. Like, I think it's, It's fair
- 22:32Speaker 1: for him to say. I would say my vote goes
- 22:35Speaker 1: to Sal Stewart and Carson Bench might get closer to
- 22:40Speaker 1: an MVP another year. Later on, both are storied careers.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I think Sal Stewart's going to win the going
- 22:46Speaker 2: to win the Rookie of the Year. Just one thought
- 22:48Speaker 2: on Joe here. He had a lot of good thoughts there,
- 22:51Speaker 2: but one of them was. Analytics is sort of a
- 22:54Speaker 2: safety net. To me, analytics has also become a trap
- 22:58Speaker 2: door because I think now people are so in tuned
- 23:01Speaker 2: with what analytics are and how it forces people to
- 23:05Speaker 2: think that when things don't happen that you think should,
- 23:09Speaker 2: I think that's when you get burned. I think it's
- 23:12Speaker 2: a safety net and a trap door.
- 23:13Speaker 3: I like that.
- 23:20Speaker 2: I can't help but laugh just because I see the man, which, A,
- 23:24Speaker 2: is a miracle that I see the man. And they're
- 23:26Speaker 2: involving technology, which is great. And, of course, there is
- 23:30Speaker 2: the podcast. Is this a great game or what? AJ
- 23:34Speaker 2: and Crassie, noted Yankee fan and supporter. Tim Kirkson joins us.
- 23:41Speaker 2: After that reaction right there that we saw, he was
- 23:44Speaker 2: so pissed off at Austin Wells for going to third.
- 23:48Speaker 2: His team needed base runners, and we saw Kirkson throw
- 23:52Speaker 2: his head down and his glasses down. The moment became viral,
- 23:58Speaker 2: and my thought when I was watching, poor Tim. Poor Tim.
- 24:04Speaker 6: All right.
- 24:06Speaker 5: This is so laughable where this is now. I've covered
- 24:10Speaker 5: baseball for 46 years. You really think I'm rooting for someone?
- 24:15Speaker 5: My reaction was one of incredulity. Where was he going
- 24:20Speaker 5: on that play?
- 24:21Speaker 7: What was he doing?
- 24:23Speaker 5: How in the world do you make that mistake in
- 24:27Speaker 5: that situation?
- 24:28Speaker 7: This is the playoffs. This is the big leagues.
- 24:31Speaker 5: This was a critical inning down a run, and you
- 24:35Speaker 5: make that out. That's all I was reacting to. And
- 24:39Speaker 5: at certain places, I clobbered today. I haven't had this
- 24:43Speaker 5: in a long time. But if you think I was
- 24:45Speaker 5: rooting for somebody or I was upset, I wasn't upset.
- 24:49Speaker 5: I was in amazement that somebody who got held up
- 24:53Speaker 5: by the third base coach five feet before he even
- 24:56Speaker 5: got to second base ran through a sign, which he
- 24:59Speaker 5: never even saw. and was out by five feet at
- 25:03Speaker 5: third base. That's what I was reacting to.
- 25:06Speaker 2: I think this is a really good opportunity. A, we've
- 25:09Speaker 2: learned what incredulity means. Most people don't pronounce it that way.
- 25:13Speaker 2: And then secondly, if you didn't see it, you at
- 25:16Speaker 2: home get a chance to be the judge. Is this
- 25:19Speaker 2: somebody who was incredulous or somebody rooting for the Yankees? Pause, Tim.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Let's listen. Rasmussen rocks slightly and fires.
- 25:28Speaker 6: Hard line drive. And it's down the right field line.
- 25:31Speaker 6: A fair ball. The no-hit bid comes to an end.
- 25:34Speaker 7: Wells rounds first, heads for second.
- 25:36Speaker 2: He's going for third.
- 25:38Speaker 7: The relay throw from the shortstop.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Walls beat him by a mile.
- 25:41Speaker 4: And he is toast at third base.
- 25:43Speaker 6: And the inning is over.
- 25:48Speaker 2: All right, Tim, here, let me just reenact it.
- 25:54Speaker 5: I threw up my hands head down because I am watching.
- 26:00Speaker 5: I've looked at the third base coach. I watched Austin
- 26:04Speaker 5: Wells get towards second. I watched him go full speed,
- 26:08Speaker 5: starting the third. And I wondered, where are you going
- 26:11Speaker 5: in this situation?
- 26:13Speaker 3: Dead.
- 26:14Speaker 6: You could see it immediately.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Deader than dead.
- 26:17Speaker 4: Right.
- 26:17Speaker 5: Victor Mesa Jr. is a great defensive right fielder. He's
- 26:22Speaker 5: going to get the ball to Taylor Walls, in this case,
- 26:26Speaker 5: the relay guy. He took it instead of the second baseman.
- 26:30Speaker 5: He is a great shortstop. He made a perfect throw
- 26:33Speaker 5: to third. That play wasn't even close. Look, fellas, this
- 26:38Speaker 5: is serious. I never am critical of a baseball player
- 26:42Speaker 5: if he can't get a hit.
- 26:44Speaker 7: It's the hardest game in the world to play.
- 26:46Speaker 5: I'm never upset if you can't catch a ground ball
- 26:48Speaker 5: hit at 110 miles an hour.
- 26:51Speaker 7: I never get upset if you can't throw a strike.
- 26:54Speaker 5: This game is impossibly difficult to play. But I draw
- 26:58Speaker 5: the line when you make a mental mistake because you're
- 27:02Speaker 5: not watching what you should be watching on the field.
- 27:06Speaker 5: And that was my complaint with that play. Mine and
- 27:10Speaker 5: everybody else's. Eduardo came out of that and said, This
- 27:15Speaker 5: cannot happen. And that's the whole point. That play cannot
- 27:20Speaker 5: happen in a major league game in that situation in October.
- 27:24Speaker 2: Right.
- 27:25Speaker 4: All right.
- 27:26Speaker 2: So let's do this because I've been to a million
- 27:28Speaker 2: games with Tim. And I know that what Tim does
- 27:32Speaker 2: better than anybody is he will go and he will
- 27:34Speaker 2: canvas both teams and he'll do it days, if not
- 27:37Speaker 2: weeks before other people that are involved with calling the
- 27:41Speaker 2: game or reporting on it will do. So rather than
- 27:44Speaker 2: talk about, at least in the short term, Rasmus' performance
- 27:48Speaker 2: or Cole's night or Millware and Judge, I'm always curious,
- 27:53Speaker 2: what are the things that you've learned from the Rays
- 27:57Speaker 2: and from the Yankees that you haven't yet been able
- 27:59Speaker 2: to get out there in talking with all the players
- 28:02Speaker 2: and the coaches and the managers that you do that
- 28:05Speaker 2: nobody's heard yet? Like, I want you to unlock the
- 28:08Speaker 2: Kirkshin vault for me.
- 28:11Speaker 5: All right, well, I wrote this story for ESPN.com today
- 28:15Speaker 5: about just how much more the Rays bunt and how
- 28:19Speaker 5: much better they bunt than any other team in the
- 28:23Speaker 5: major leagues. The Rays had 49 bunt singles this year.
- 28:28Speaker 5: The next most was the Brewers, who are like the
- 28:30Speaker 5: mirror image of the Rays in the other league.
- 28:32Speaker 7: They had 32.
- 28:33Speaker 5: The Dodgers, who should never bunt, but they had two
- 28:37Speaker 5: bunt singles the whole year. The bunt has become a
- 28:41Speaker 5: weapon for the Rays. And it wasn't anything that was planned.
- 28:45Speaker 5: It just kind of evolved, Kevin Cash told me. They
- 28:48Speaker 5: got a few bunts down early. They had a safety
- 28:50Speaker 5: squeeze that worked. And it got to the point where
- 28:53Speaker 5: Taylor Walls, September 22nd against the Yankees, had first and
- 28:57Speaker 5: third with one out. Max Reed, great fielding pitcher on
- 29:00Speaker 5: the mound. And he pushed a bunt perfectly between the
- 29:04Speaker 5: pitcher's mound and first base.
- 29:05Speaker 7: Ends up scoring a run. No one's covering second.
- 29:09Speaker 5: To me, that play kind of personified who the Rays are.
- 29:12Speaker 7: Look, they pitch exceptionally well.
- 29:14Speaker 5: Their defense is really good. They have 40 homer guy
- 29:18Speaker 5: in the middle of the order. But it's these little
- 29:21Speaker 5: things like getting a bunt down at the right time
- 29:24Speaker 5: that makes the Rays so good. Aaron Boone told me
- 29:27Speaker 5: a couple days ago, he said, it's a misnomer that
- 29:30Speaker 5: they never beat themselves.
- 29:32Speaker 7: They make mistakes. They run into outs. They make errors.
- 29:36Speaker 5: But what the Rays do, is they make you mad.
- 29:40Speaker 5: more mistakes than they make. And he said they are fearless.
- 29:45Speaker 5: And that fearlessness is one reason that they won more
- 29:48Speaker 5: games than any team in the American League.
- 29:50Speaker 2: All right.
- 29:52Speaker 1: Let's talk about two starts in that game that you
- 29:55Speaker 1: were talking about with the Wells base running gaff. Drew
- 29:58Speaker 1: Rasmussen obviously had the no-hitter going, but something that was
- 30:04Speaker 1: overshadowed a little bit was Garrett Cole in that game
- 30:08Speaker 1: because he ended up getting the loss. What did you
- 30:11Speaker 1: see that, yes, Rasmussen's third in the league and wins
- 30:15Speaker 1: this year against a Garrett Cole matchup that some thought
- 30:20Speaker 1: possibly Carlos Rodon was supposed to throw that game?
- 30:24Speaker 7: Right.
- 30:24Speaker 5: I would have started Garrett Cole in that game. And
- 30:27Speaker 5: he pitched very well, but he didn't pitch well enough.
- 30:31Speaker 5: I was asked multiple times, should Garrett Cole get the
- 30:34Speaker 5: ball in game one? I thought there was no doubt. Look,
- 30:38Speaker 5: Carlos Rodon last time out was great. Eight innings, three hits,
- 30:41Speaker 5: no walks, eight strikeouts. He's a really good major league
- 30:44Speaker 5: pitcher when he's right. But I'm going to start a
- 30:46Speaker 5: former Cy Young Award winner who has one of the
- 30:49Speaker 5: best postseason records of any active player. He has the
- 30:53Speaker 5: best career ERA. of any active pitcher, 277 going into
- 30:58Speaker 5: that game. And his strikeouts per nine innings is the
- 31:01Speaker 5: highest of any starting pitcher who's thrown at least 100
- 31:04Speaker 5: innings in the postseason. I would trust anything to Garrett Cole,
- 31:09Speaker 5: even though he'd given up a bunch of homers coming
- 31:11Speaker 5: into that start. So if the Yankees advance, I still
- 31:14Speaker 5: think Their greatest strength is that starting pitching. We saw Schlittler.
- 31:18Speaker 5: We saw Freed. Now we've seen Cole. We're going to
- 31:21Speaker 5: see Rodon. Cole has done a pretty darn good job
- 31:24Speaker 5: for a guy coming back from Tommy John injury.
- 31:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you could argue he's done a really
- 31:29Speaker 2: good job. I think the vulnerability on Cole, Tim, is
- 31:32Speaker 2: that he has occasionally, more than one occasion, given up
- 31:35Speaker 2: a homer. And that's what happened again. And I don't
- 31:38Speaker 2: know that you go into a game with Schlittler or
- 31:41Speaker 2: even Rasmussen and think, Yeah, we're going to need to
- 31:44Speaker 2: at least score one or two in order to win.
- 31:45Speaker 2: I think our guys, Mizorowski is another one who didn't
- 31:48Speaker 2: have it, but Michael King the other night. We have
- 31:50Speaker 2: guys that are going to put a zero up. And
- 31:52Speaker 2: as good as Cole was, I think you're always, to me,
- 31:56Speaker 2: when he starts a game, there's a good chance the
- 31:59Speaker 2: other team is going to get one. And in the
- 32:01Speaker 2: case of the Rays... whether they create it with one
- 32:04Speaker 2: swing or they use their bunts and their speed. Speed
- 32:07Speaker 2: is a big factor. You're looking at a guy like
- 32:09Speaker 2: Chandler Simpson on that team who's as electric and dynamic
- 32:13Speaker 2: as anybody and will do whatever it takes to try
- 32:16Speaker 2: to get a run in, including bunting and stealing a base.
- 32:19Speaker 2: But I want to focus on the guy that's got
- 32:21Speaker 2: to face Cam Schlittler. What have you learned from the
- 32:25Speaker 2: Rays about their ability to tap back into the vein
- 32:29Speaker 2: that made fastball Freddie Freddy Peralta, because that guy, when
- 32:34Speaker 2: he goes on the mound, as you know, that guy
- 32:36Speaker 2: has got every chance to put up a zero here
- 32:39Speaker 2: since he's come over and after one bad start, what's
- 32:42Speaker 2: his ERA in like the last nine, 220?
- 32:46Speaker 7: Yeah, he's been great with the Rays.
- 32:48Speaker 5: And let's not forget, he's made more starts than any
- 32:51Speaker 5: pitcher in the major leagues starting with 2023. He's been
- 32:55Speaker 5: a really good starting pitcher recently. for several years now.
- 32:59Speaker 5: He just had a bad time in New York, but
- 33:01Speaker 5: this is why the Rays are so good. They get
- 33:05Speaker 5: a player from another team, doesn't matter what team it
- 33:08Speaker 5: seems to be, and they can make him better. Kyle
- 33:10Speaker 5: Snyder is one of the best pitching coaches in the game,
- 33:13Speaker 5: if not the best, and they just identified a few things,
- 33:16Speaker 5: and now he's back. His last six starts for the Rays,
- 33:19Speaker 5: he was unhittable for them, and he gives them a
- 33:22Speaker 5: good number two starting pitcher to go up against the
- 33:26Speaker 5: best starting pitcher in the American League, Cam Schlittler. So
- 33:29Speaker 5: this is where the Rays are so good. They have
- 33:31Speaker 5: no real weakness to this team. They may not have
- 33:34Speaker 5: the Yankees' starting rotation, but theirs is pretty darn good.
- 33:40Speaker 3: Tim, let's talk about the other offense. Can the Yankees
- 33:42Speaker 3: figure out a way to score without Aaron Judge in
- 33:45Speaker 3: the lineup and on the roster? Can they figure out
- 33:47Speaker 3: a way? Because the Rays don't give up a ton
- 33:49Speaker 3: of home runs. The Yankees always hit a ton of
- 33:51Speaker 3: home runs, especially in the trough. Is there a way?
- 33:54Speaker 3: for the Yankees to figure out a way to score
- 33:56Speaker 3: enough runs? They got shut out in the first game.
- 33:58Speaker 3: Can they manufacture runs? Because this has been the Yankee
- 34:01Speaker 3: weakness for years.
- 34:02Speaker 5: Yeah, they're a different team, I think, AJ, from last year.
- 34:06Speaker 5: They're younger and more athletic. George Lombard Jr., Spencer Jones,
- 34:10Speaker 5: those guys are young. They can run. But your point
- 34:12Speaker 5: is well made. They did score 18 runs in two
- 34:15Speaker 5: games against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. But Again,
- 34:18Speaker 5: the trop is different. The Rays are 29 games over
- 34:22Speaker 5: 500 at their home ballpark this year. That is a
- 34:25Speaker 5: ridiculously great record. And the other thing about the Rays
- 34:29Speaker 5: is their pitchers walk fewer batters this year than any
- 34:33Speaker 5: team in the major leagues. And their hitters struck out
- 34:37Speaker 5: fewer times than any team in the major leagues. In
- 34:41Speaker 5: the last 50 years, only the 2006 Twins and 1986
- 34:45Speaker 5: Red Sox had that combination. So the bottom line is
- 34:49Speaker 5: they throw strikes and they swing at strikes, which is
- 34:52Speaker 5: another reason why they are so difficult to beat. Yes,
- 34:56Speaker 5: the Yankees are going to have to hit the ball
- 34:58Speaker 5: out of the ballpark. We saw that against the Red Sox,
- 35:00Speaker 5: Ben Rice, Cody Bellinger, people like that. And no, they
- 35:03Speaker 5: don't have the ability to manufacture.
- 35:06Speaker 7: Like the Rays do.
- 35:07Speaker 5: But I repeat, the Rays are one of the best
- 35:09Speaker 5: in baseball at finding ways other than hitting a home
- 35:13Speaker 5: run to score runs.
- 35:16Speaker 2: Take a look at the numbers there, the offense, the pitching,
- 35:18Speaker 2: and the leaders with Chandler Simpson and his batting average.
- 35:21Speaker 2: Caminero is an absolute superstar in the middle. Aranda gets overlooked.
- 35:25Speaker 2: Diaz is as a good a leadoff guy as there is. Tim,
- 35:29Speaker 2: when you look at the Yankees and their lineup, will
- 35:33Speaker 2: there be any changes going into this game? Is Caballero
- 35:37Speaker 2: going to be in the lineup for them? I think
- 35:40Speaker 2: Peralta's numbers are pretty neutral when it comes to splits, etc.
- 35:45Speaker 7: I don't think so.
- 35:46Speaker 5: The last two games, the Yankees have started eight left-handed hitters.
- 35:50Speaker 5: This is the first two times in the history of
- 35:53Speaker 5: postseason baseball that a team started eight left-handed hitters, none
- 35:57Speaker 5: of them being a switch hitter. That's the kind of
- 36:01Speaker 5: flexibility that the Yankees have, is they have this many
- 36:05Speaker 5: left-handed hitters and they have this many right-handed hitters. sitting
- 36:09Speaker 5: over there on the bench. So I don't think this
- 36:10Speaker 5: is a time for the Yankees to panic and say,
- 36:13Speaker 5: oh my gosh, we got shut out. They just beat
- 36:15Speaker 5: the Red Sox 18-2 over two days. They just have
- 36:18Speaker 5: to come out and have a better approach against Freddy Peralta.
- 36:22Speaker 5: But let's not forget, Drew Rasmussen was tremendous. He had
- 36:26Speaker 5: a 1-8-1 ERA against the Yankees in his career. That
- 36:30Speaker 5: was the lowest of any pitcher who has ever made
- 36:33Speaker 5: 10 career starts against the Yankees. Nobody has pitched better
- 36:38Speaker 5: against them in an extended period than that guy.
- 36:40Speaker 7: And then he went out and did it again. So
- 36:42Speaker 7: they just have to have a better approach. Pardon me?
- 36:46Speaker 2: It was a near perfect game. I mean, he was amazing.
- 36:49Speaker 5: He was amazing. That guy is so good. Our catchers,
- 36:53Speaker 5: he's got three fastballs. Everyone's got two fastballs now, but
- 36:57Speaker 5: this is a real trend in the game. When you
- 36:59Speaker 5: have three different looks with your fastball, like Schlittler does,
- 37:03Speaker 5: like Rasmussen does, it just sets up everything else. And
- 37:07Speaker 5: the way Schlittler uses his three fastballs and then against
- 37:11Speaker 5: the Red Sox, he flipped that curveball in there way
- 37:14Speaker 5: more often the first few innings than any other time
- 37:16Speaker 5: this season. That's what makes him so good. Fellas, I
- 37:20Speaker 5: watch a game every single night and I wonder, how
- 37:23Speaker 5: does anyone get a hit anymore? With the pitching that
- 37:25Speaker 5: we see, we're going to see a whole lot more
- 37:27Speaker 5: of it tonight.
- 37:30Speaker 3: Tim, you said something about the lefties and I've always
- 37:32Speaker 3: been intrigued by this. Running eight lefties up there against
- 37:35Speaker 3: the Freddy Peralta, and they're not switch hitters. Mark Burley,
- 37:38Speaker 3: who I call forever, would be like, man, if a
- 37:39Speaker 3: team just runs all righties up there, it just locks
- 37:41Speaker 3: me in because I know I'm only seeing one thing.
- 37:44Speaker 3: Do you think that's maybe– and I'm not going to
- 37:46Speaker 3: call it a disadvantage because it's the Yankees' best players,
- 37:49Speaker 3: but maybe something small for a guy like Freddy Peralta
- 37:52Speaker 3: or Drew Rasmussen, it's always the same windows. It's always
- 37:55Speaker 3: the same look. Every time someone comes to the plate,
- 37:58Speaker 3: they're on this side or this side of the plate.
- 38:00Speaker 3: And I can just really focus on making certain pitches
- 38:03Speaker 3: to one side of the plate.
- 38:05Speaker 5: Yeah, that certainly makes sense. And, you know, sometimes the
- 38:08Speaker 5: splits are neutral. You know, the Rays are such a
- 38:11Speaker 5: neutral team that just when you think, oh, they're going
- 38:13Speaker 5: to load up with right-handers or left-handers, it really doesn't
- 38:16Speaker 5: matter with the way that they play. They hit right-handers
- 38:19Speaker 5: and left-handers equally well. Just another reason why the Rays
- 38:23Speaker 5: are so good is that they're so difficult to match
- 38:26Speaker 5: up against. So, I would start those eight left-handed hitters
- 38:30Speaker 5: again and hope they get hot like they did in
- 38:32Speaker 5: game one and game two against the Red Sox.
- 38:36Speaker 2: Last one for me. Are you pleased with the travel schedule?
- 38:40Speaker 2: Are you delighted that you're just going from Tampa to
- 38:42Speaker 2: New York as opposed to cross country? How's that impacting
- 38:46Speaker 2: your mental state?
- 38:48Speaker 5: Well, my mental state is good because I printed out
- 38:51Speaker 5: my boarding pass for my flight tomorrow. So it is
- 38:55Speaker 5: in my wallet, not on my phone.
- 38:57Speaker 2: Nobody does that.
- 39:01Speaker 5: Nobody else is 5'4 and 70 years old covering the game, okay?
- 39:06Speaker 5: I have to do these things. Yeah, he's not 70, though.
- 39:10Speaker 7: Not like me. Also, I am traveling with Eduardo Perez.
- 39:14Speaker 7: And if you travel with Eduardo.
- 39:16Speaker 5: And Ravi knows this, nothing bad can possibly happen. Fellas,
- 39:20Speaker 5: we were in Chicago once passing through O'Hare and there
- 39:25Speaker 5: was a line of literally 200 people in the line in.
- 39:29Speaker 7: Order to get through. security.
- 39:30Speaker 5: Eduardo says, come with me. He goes to the front
- 39:33Speaker 5: of the line, passes 200 people. He tells this lady,
- 39:37Speaker 5: we're on TV. You need to let us through right now.
- 39:41Speaker 7: And she said, go ahead. I couldn't believe it. This
- 39:44Speaker 7: would only work With Eduardo.
- 39:46Speaker 5: He acts like he's been there before and people believe
- 39:50Speaker 5: him no matter what he says. So as long as
- 39:53Speaker 5: I'm with Eduardo and I am with Eduardo on this trip,
- 39:56Speaker 5: nothing bad can possibly happen to poor Papa.
- 40:01Speaker 2: We will clip that off, that nothing bad can possibly happen.
- 40:05Speaker 2: Don't say that, Tim. Don't say that. Poor Eduardo can't
- 40:09Speaker 2: pull off some magic trick. I've seen some crazy stuff
- 40:12Speaker 2: in the postseason.
- 40:13Speaker 3: Don't say that. I've seen charter flights get ruined. Not
- 40:15Speaker 3: be able to take off. I mean, I've seen some
- 40:17Speaker 3: wild stuff in the postseason, so don't say nothing.
- 40:21Speaker 7: What is my motto about traveling?
- 40:24Speaker 2: Yeah, Tim, famously, I mean, the double entendre is traveling
- 40:28Speaker 2: is a violation. Get it? It's a violation. And so
- 40:32Speaker 2: Tim thought that. Yeah, there you go, Crassie. Unfortunately, I
- 40:36Speaker 2: can write Tim's next book because I'm inside the head.
- 40:40Speaker 2: I've heard them all. I can repeat them. I can
- 40:43Speaker 2: regurgitate them. and he's a beautiful person. Hey, Tim, it's
- 40:47Speaker 2: been a pleasure to see you again. Thanks very much.
- 40:49Speaker 2: And everybody, check out Timmy and his son's podcast, Is
- 40:52Speaker 2: This a Great Game or What? It's on YouTube and
- 40:54Speaker 2: wherever you get your pods. And for the best Yankee
- 40:58Speaker 2: postseason merch around, head to FoulTerritoryShop.com, and we'll be back
- 41:04Speaker 2: right after this. He is a piece of work. I mean,
- 41:09Speaker 2: he is beautiful.
- 41:11Speaker 1: He is a baseball geek, but we're doing Seat Geek
- 41:14Speaker 1: right now.
- 41:14Speaker 2: So there's kind of a correlation there. He's one of
- 41:17Speaker 2: a kind. And he knows Seat Geek. He's got his
- 41:20Speaker 2: own podcast. He knows where to go for the best
- 41:23Speaker 2: tickets in town and for all the concerts out there.
- 41:26Speaker 2: And I'm assuming that everybody knows you get a special code, right?
- 41:29Speaker 2: Territory 10, 10% off of all the tickets on Seat Geek.
- 41:33Speaker 2: Is that right?
- 41:34Speaker 1: That is right. That is right.
- 41:36Speaker 3: A.J.
- 41:37Speaker 1: I don't even think you need 10% off because I
- 41:39Speaker 1: know exactly which game you want to go to.
- 41:42Speaker 3: Watch the White Sox go up 2-0 on the Guardians. Yes,
- 41:47Speaker 3: that's going to happen today, Carl. They're going to be
- 41:50Speaker 3: celebrating the streets of Chicago going to the ALCS.
- 41:53Speaker 2: I'll tell you where it's become a hard ticket to
- 41:55Speaker 2: get is Tampa Bay. I think Schlittler, one thing about
- 41:59Speaker 2: Schlittler is he seems to be motivated when people attack him.
- 42:03Speaker 2: He did that in Boston. He planted a little seed
- 42:06Speaker 2: about there are going to be a lot of Yankee fans.
- 42:08Speaker 2: They had nothing to cheer about at the Trop the
- 42:10Speaker 2: other night. If he comes out and mows a little
- 42:12Speaker 2: bit in the first five innings, you'll hear more Yankee
- 42:15Speaker 2: fans than he did the other night. Now, that's a
- 42:18Speaker 2: ticket that's harder to get than you would otherwise think,
- 42:21Speaker 2: but that's a hard one to get. For sure.
- 42:26Speaker 6: True.
- 42:26Speaker 3: And by the way, I know tomorrow is tomorrow, and
- 42:29Speaker 3: we could talk about this, but if you can get
- 42:30Speaker 3: a ticket to San Diego tomorrow, get a ticket to
- 42:33Speaker 3: San Diego tomorrow. This place is going to be– I mean,
- 42:39Speaker 3: Milwaukee was– the atmosphere was electric. San Diego tomorrow, their
- 42:43Speaker 3: team down 2-0. They know they need them. It's going
- 42:45Speaker 3: to be– the Western Metal thing out there in left
- 42:49Speaker 3: field could fall down with the shaking if the Padres
- 42:52Speaker 3: get ahead early.
- 42:54Speaker 2: Holy sheets.
- 42:55Speaker 5: Holy sheets.
- 42:55Speaker 3: Holy sheets. Holy sheets. I love that guy. Holy sheets
- 42:59Speaker 3: has a thing on his foot. It looks like he
- 43:00Speaker 3: has club foot. He has a fascia tear. Have you
- 43:03Speaker 3: ever seen this brace he has to wear? I saw
- 43:05Speaker 3: him walking and I was like, what is that? It
- 43:06Speaker 3: looks like he has like a, like an extra brace,
- 43:09Speaker 3: like an extra Achilles tendon on the back of his leg.
- 43:13Speaker 2: All right, fellas. Of course, I got a code for
- 43:14Speaker 2: you all. You can use the code TERRITORY10, 10% off
- 43:17Speaker 2: your next set of tickets at SeatGeek, 10% off any tickets.
- 43:20Speaker 2: The promo code is TERRITORY10. Make sure you click the
- 43:23Speaker 2: link in the description to download the app and have
- 43:25Speaker 2: the code automatically added to your account so you can
- 43:28Speaker 2: use it later. Time to add a look ahead as
- 43:33Speaker 2: we preview this afternoon's White Sox-Guardians game coming up quickly.
- 43:39Speaker 2: This seems sort of a bad question, but I do
- 43:42Speaker 2: want to ask it because, A.J., you're a White Sox guy.
- 43:46Speaker 2: We know that. Why should people who are looking at
- 43:50Speaker 2: the Major League Baseball playoffs and watching the Yankees and
- 43:54Speaker 2: Rays compete think that either one of the Guardians or
- 43:58Speaker 2: White Sox can beat them in a seven-game series?
- 44:02Speaker 3: Well, for the Guardians, if you go Guardians, it's because
- 44:06Speaker 3: of the pitching. They're pitching Gavin Williams and Parker Messick
- 44:11Speaker 3: and Foster Griffin in the back end of their bullpen
- 44:13Speaker 3: can compete with anybody. They just got to figure out
- 44:15Speaker 3: somebody to hit. I don't know who that's going to be.
- 44:17Speaker 3: Jose Ramirez had a terrible year from his standards. They
- 44:22Speaker 3: got to figure out a way to score some runs.
- 44:23Speaker 3: And for the White Sox, it's just the vibes. Have
- 44:25Speaker 3: you seen the vibes, Carl? I love the vibes. And
- 44:29Speaker 3: I spell it with a Z at the end. I
- 44:31Speaker 3: just go V-I-B-E-Z vibes. I mean, have you seen the
- 44:35Speaker 3: vibes they have? And you know what they've done a
- 44:37Speaker 3: great job of? Mixing and matching with their pitching. Anthony
- 44:40Speaker 3: Kay starts and they bring in Sean Burke or whoever
- 44:42Speaker 3: starts and then they figure out a way to get
- 44:44Speaker 3: through nine innings. But this team is just fun. And
- 44:47Speaker 3: can fun win? I think if you look at, I'm
- 44:49Speaker 3: going to go back to 2013, okay? 2013 Red Sox
- 44:53Speaker 3: won the World Series. Do I think they were the
- 44:54Speaker 3: best team that year? I think the Tigers were a
- 44:56Speaker 3: much better team than what the Red Sox were that year.
- 45:00Speaker 3: And that was the year Torrey Hunter jumped over the
- 45:02Speaker 3: fence and Tried to rob the David Ortiz. Homer just
- 45:04Speaker 3: hits off his glove, grand slam, and they go on
- 45:06Speaker 3: to win the World Series. You know, they had the
- 45:08Speaker 3: bombing and they had something special. But vibes matter. And
- 45:11Speaker 3: sometimes it's just your year to win the World Series. Now,
- 45:13Speaker 3: I can look at the Brewers and say, man, they
- 45:15Speaker 3: got some vibes too, right? You can look at the
- 45:18Speaker 3: White Sox and say they got the vibes. Do they
- 45:19Speaker 3: have the most talent? They have a lot of talent.
- 45:22Speaker 3: But as far as pitching and defense and everything else,
- 45:24Speaker 3: probably not in stacking up against the other teams. But, man,
- 45:27Speaker 3: there's something about those vibes of the Z, Carl, that
- 45:30Speaker 3: can take you– farther than you ever thought possible.
- 45:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I can see that. And I love Gavin Williams
- 45:35Speaker 2: on the mound. And Williams is, you know, he'll give
- 45:37Speaker 2: you seven innings. He'll give you the strikeouts. The vibes
- 45:41Speaker 2: to me, though, are currently with Milwaukee and Tampa Bay. Like,
- 45:44Speaker 2: those are my vibes teams right now. That's where I go.
- 45:47Speaker 2: Even in light of what Atlanta did yesterday, I'm VIBEZing
- 45:51Speaker 2: with those two teams. And in a year in which
- 45:53Speaker 2: we're about to go into some type of labor issue,
- 45:56Speaker 2: the idea that those two teams have a chance to
- 45:58Speaker 2: meet for a World Series slaps of irony, doesn't it?
- 46:04Speaker 3: Yes. Yes, it does, even though people tell you that
- 46:07Speaker 3: it doesn't matter. But it would be ironic if it was. Now,
- 46:10Speaker 3: I tell you what, there's a company I work for, Carl,
- 46:11Speaker 3: that we wouldn't love that so much because I know
- 46:15Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying, but I would love to
- 46:17Speaker 3: see it. And I think a lot of people out
- 46:18Speaker 3: there would love to see it because it would be
- 46:20Speaker 3: a different matchup. And also there's a team in Los Angeles.
- 46:23Speaker 3: That's amazing how many people want them to lose the Dodgers.
- 46:27Speaker 3: You talk to any fan out there in baseball, unless
- 46:30Speaker 3: you're a Dodger fan. Nobody wants to see the Dodgers
- 46:32Speaker 3: winning it.
- 46:33Speaker 2: It is amazing. And they have good dudes on the Dodgers.
- 46:36Speaker 2: It's not like they've got a bunch of buttholes on
- 46:38Speaker 2: their team. Great dudes.
- 46:39Speaker 3: They've got great guys on this team.
- 46:41Speaker 2: Great dudes. And a manager that's a great guy. Kratzy,
- 46:44Speaker 2: my wife, said to me last night, like the Dodgers
- 46:46Speaker 2: have created this concept of people just root against them.
- 46:49Speaker 2: It's like the Brady issue with the Patriots and the
- 46:53Speaker 2: Dynasties teams. And people end up not liking them. But
- 46:57Speaker 2: I'm curious, Kratzy, what you think about this White Sox-Guardian series.
- 47:01Speaker 1: I mean, I think it has gone the best it
- 47:04Speaker 1: could go for a White Sox team that I don't
- 47:06Speaker 1: think it's just vibes. I can say I have not
- 47:10Speaker 1: watched as many White Sox games as AJ, so he's
- 47:13Speaker 1: our White Sox aficionado. But you don't win only because
- 47:18Speaker 1: of vibes. You win because you have guys in the
- 47:21Speaker 1: lineup that the other team is afraid of.
- 47:24Speaker 2: Do they strike out too much?
- 47:25Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 47:26Speaker 1: We can go to every single– issue with every team
- 47:31Speaker 1: that's in the playoffs right now. The White Sox did
- 47:33Speaker 1: what they needed to do. They won one game in Cleveland.
- 47:36Speaker 1: Now they're playing with house money. So you're talking about
- 47:38Speaker 1: a vibes team that's playing with house money? I think
- 47:42Speaker 1: they're going Anthony Kaye here, and I know they're going
- 47:45Speaker 1: to Sean Burke is what they're planning. I think in
- 47:48Speaker 1: the back of Will Venable's mind, he's thinking, we had
- 47:50Speaker 1: a day off. If we can get two, three runs
- 47:54Speaker 1: on Gavin Williams, they may not go to Sean Burke.
- 47:57Speaker 1: I could be totally wrong. I could be totally wrong.
- 48:00Speaker 1: But I think there's something with this White Sox team
- 48:03Speaker 1: that this game now is a must-win game for the Guardians.
- 48:08Speaker 1: And I know I'm not like, oh, well, way to
- 48:10Speaker 1: go out on a limb. This is your guy on
- 48:12Speaker 1: the mound. I think they should have started Gavin Williams
- 48:14Speaker 1: game one.
- 48:15Speaker 2: They didn't.
- 48:16Speaker 1: I get it, the lefty matchup. I get it, the
- 48:18Speaker 1: bullpen could be used. It didn't work out for the Guardians.
- 48:21Speaker 1: Now it is in dire straits because you go back
- 48:24Speaker 1: to Chicago with this team and Vassal's Wand. it would
- 48:30Speaker 1: serve the end of their playoffs if they don't win
- 48:33Speaker 1: this game tonight for the Guardians.
- 48:37Speaker 3: Crotty, can Grant Taylor pitch? He threw four innings. He's
- 48:40Speaker 3: closed the game with four innings. Can he pitch to
- 48:43Speaker 3: one day off, four innings, one day off? Maybe will
- 48:46Speaker 3: they pitch him? Because will they pitch him may be
- 48:50Speaker 3: a better question than can.
- 48:51Speaker 2: Because, of course, you can say he can't.
- 48:53Speaker 3: But will they pitch him knowing the fact that he
- 48:56Speaker 3: threw four innings one day ago? Not one or two.
- 48:59Speaker 1: Four innings. Here's where I agree with Joe Maddon. Joe
- 49:02Speaker 1: Maddon talks a lot about it. People are going to
- 49:04Speaker 1: hear whatever side of the argument, analytics or old school,
- 49:08Speaker 1: that they hear from Joe Maddon. Joe Maddon and I
- 49:11Speaker 1: are lockstep with this. You get all the information you want.
- 49:15Speaker 1: And I am putting together an idea of what I'm
- 49:17Speaker 1: going to do. I am not going to push Grant
- 49:20Speaker 1: Taylor to throw four innings again. What he did was awesome.
- 49:24Speaker 1: I'm not going to.
- 49:24Speaker 2: Do that to him.
- 49:26Speaker 1: Although I know we have another day off. But I
- 49:29Speaker 1: will tell Grant Taylor, you are going to get the
- 49:32Speaker 1: best hitters in this Guardians lineup if we are winning.
- 49:36Speaker 1: I may see Grant Taylor... in the fourth inning against
- 49:39Speaker 1: the top of the lineup after Anthony Kaye gives me three.
- 49:42Speaker 1: I may see that. I may say, Sean Burke, you're
- 49:45Speaker 1: giving me five. It's just going to be the last
- 49:47Speaker 1: five of the game. If Grant Taylor doesn't pitch and
- 49:51Speaker 1: you lose this game if you're the White Sox, I
- 49:53Speaker 1: failed as a manager. So, yes, I am throwing him
- 49:56Speaker 1: out there. No, I am not trying to one-up what
- 49:59Speaker 1: he did in game one.
- 50:02Speaker 2: Gavin Williams is going to start the fifth time against
- 50:05Speaker 2: the White Sox in 2026. Fifth time that he's starting
- 50:08Speaker 2: against them. And a lineup that's got Antonacci and Teal
- 50:11Speaker 2: and Vargas has been a stud. And the two Montgomery's
- 50:13Speaker 2: at the end. Looking forward to seeing how this plays out.
- 50:16Speaker 2: We'll wrap this up. Make sure to check out Fallow Territory. Shop.com.
- 50:20Speaker 2: It's the latest. It is the greatest postseason merch available.
- 50:23Speaker 2: White Sox fans loving what Murakami has done. Go out
- 50:27Speaker 2: there and get it. It's available for the White Sox,
- 50:30Speaker 2: for the Guardians, and all the other teams battling in October.
- 50:33Speaker 2: And we will be right back. Time now to welcome
- 50:36Speaker 2: in our buddy, the pitching ninja, Rob Friedman. Rob, good
- 50:38Speaker 2: to see you down there. Carl Ravitch here today with...
- 50:41Speaker 2: AJ and Kratzy, one of the things that sort of
- 50:45Speaker 2: we've been talking about, we had Joe Maddon on, obviously, earlier.
- 50:48Speaker 2: This idea that Churio is made for the moment, like
- 50:55Speaker 2: built for the moment, like that kind of flies in
- 50:57Speaker 2: the face of all analytics, because then you're starting to
- 51:01Speaker 2: talk about sort of heartbeat and the ability to kind
- 51:05Speaker 2: of rise to this level. And obviously that's the one
- 51:09Speaker 2: at bat from yesterday and maybe the one at bat
- 51:12Speaker 2: of the postseason so far. I don't know, AJ, you
- 51:16Speaker 2: tell me, was it you or Adam who said something
- 51:18Speaker 2: along the lines of he's setting him up? Now, when
- 51:21Speaker 2: I heard it, I wasn't sure if it was the
- 51:24Speaker 2: hitter vis-a-vis Manny Ramirez who used to set up pitchers
- 51:30Speaker 2: or you were or Adam was talking about The pitcher
- 51:33Speaker 2: setting up Cheerio. AJ, do you remember that? Yeah, I
- 51:38Speaker 2: said it. Did you say it?
- 51:39Speaker 3: I said it because he took a swing at a fastball.
- 51:42Speaker 3: It was down and away. And he was like, oh, man,
- 51:45Speaker 3: I just missed it. He barely got a piece of it, right?
- 51:47Speaker 3: And I used to do that all the time. You'd
- 51:49Speaker 3: get beat by a heater, and you'd be like, oh,
- 51:52Speaker 3: look how close I was. And you're like, in your mind,
- 51:54Speaker 3: you're like, I scared him off that. Now he's going
- 51:55Speaker 3: to throw me the slider. And if you remember the at-bat,
- 51:58Speaker 3: he threw him a slider, and he spit on it.
- 52:00Speaker 3: And then he's like, okay, I'm resetting again. But sometimes
- 52:03Speaker 3: it's crazy. You can make a swing and you can
- 52:06Speaker 3: look at the pitcher and be like, oh, throw that again,
- 52:08Speaker 3: like with your action. And then they're like, oh, I
- 52:11Speaker 3: don't want to throw that again. He's right on it,
- 52:12Speaker 3: even though you're not really that close to it. So
- 52:15Speaker 3: I don't know if he was doing that at that age,
- 52:17Speaker 3: like Jack Centurio is doing that already. But to me,
- 52:21Speaker 3: in the booth, that's what it looked like. He took
- 52:23Speaker 3: a swing and he wasn't that close to it. He's like, oh,
- 52:25Speaker 3: I just, no, that was my pitch. Oh, no. And
- 52:27Speaker 3: then he threw the slider that he took and then
- 52:29Speaker 3: he got another heater and he hit the base hit.
- 52:31Speaker 3: So what an incredible bat, Rob.
- 52:33Speaker 4: It wasn't amazing at bat. Like, I still am thinking
- 52:36Speaker 4: about it. It's about as good as you can see
- 52:38Speaker 4: off a pitcher that I've seen a ton of. And
- 52:41Speaker 4: you never see anybody take that slider. You just don't.
- 52:45Speaker 4: It's the nastiest pitch in baseball. And he just, like,
- 52:49Speaker 4: you can tell Miller was setting him up for that slider.
- 52:52Speaker 4: And that was the trap. And instead, Churio got him
- 52:55Speaker 4: with the trap. So it was a lot of fun.
- 52:57Speaker 1: All right, Rob, you said you've never seen that what
- 53:01Speaker 1: we've never seen is Mason Miller throwing in that second
- 53:06Speaker 1: inning like that.
- 53:07Speaker 2: And you love stuff.
- 53:09Speaker 1: Could you see his stuff changing in that second inning?
- 53:15Speaker 1: And if you're Craig Stammen, do you go to him
- 53:18Speaker 1: in the second inning again?
- 53:21Speaker 3: Do it again?
- 53:22Speaker 4: I don't know about that. But I think at that point,
- 53:24Speaker 4: you go with the guy that is your guy. And
- 53:27Speaker 4: if they pulled him, we'd all be talking about, why
- 53:29Speaker 4: did they pull Miller like, Yeah. He walked a couple,
- 53:32Speaker 4: but you know, you gotta go with your big gun.
- 53:35Speaker 4: So I, I respect it. I mean, Miller's command wasn't
- 53:38Speaker 4: dialed in, but his stuff was there in the church.
- 53:41Speaker 6: Like there's no excuse. A trio at bat. He had
- 53:43Speaker 6: his stuff.
- 53:43Speaker 4: That was a game stuff versus a game stuff.
- 53:46Speaker 6: And sometimes they hit her wins.
- 53:49Speaker 3: Rob.
- 53:50Speaker 1: Okay.
- 53:50Speaker 3: So I have two questions for you. One, you're not
- 53:53Speaker 3: taking Mason Miller out of that game, no matter what
- 53:54Speaker 3: his stuff was there, all that, but his command was
- 53:56Speaker 3: not there. Okay. Yep. So, 3-1 slider to Christian Jelic. Like,
- 54:01Speaker 3: Christian Jelic hit his best bolt the at-bat before, and
- 54:04Speaker 3: it got caught at the wall. Do you, like, 104
- 54:07Speaker 3: is still 104 or 102. Like, don't you got to
- 54:10Speaker 3: make Christian Jelic and Sal Freelick beat you? Every time
- 54:13Speaker 3: it was like 3-1 slider, 3-2 slider. I know it's
- 54:15Speaker 3: a great pitch, but so is 102 down in the
- 54:18Speaker 3: zone and make one of those guys beat you.
- 54:21Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, that's just strategy.
- 54:23Speaker 4: Again, Miller's slider is the nastiest pitch in baseball, 56%
- 54:28Speaker 4: whiff rate or some ungodly number like that. I understand
- 54:33Speaker 4: why he wants to go to that pitch, and that
- 54:35Speaker 4: is his out pitch. But, yeah, like when you're throwing 102,
- 54:39Speaker 4: I wouldn't mind seeing that too, and it's not like
- 54:40Speaker 4: his fastball gets hit. I mean, he's got a 40%
- 54:44Speaker 4: whiff rate on that.
- 54:45Speaker 3: Yeah, well, if they don't whiff, they don't swing because
- 54:48Speaker 3: if it's not just a ball out of the hand,
- 54:49Speaker 3: they don't swing. So that's the problem. But then also
- 54:52Speaker 3: I'm sure you saw this, the tipping thing. Like I've
- 54:54Speaker 3: seen people, I had people I barely talked to sending
- 54:57Speaker 3: me pictures of tipping. I'm saying people in the airport
- 54:59Speaker 3: this morning in San Diego were like, what do you
- 55:01Speaker 3: think about Mason Miller tipping? Like, and they've sent me
- 55:03Speaker 3: pictures in there. Listen, is there something, there is a little,
- 55:07Speaker 3: but it is so small and it is so a
- 55:09Speaker 3: lot of it. Okay. They were like talking about the
- 55:10Speaker 3: guy on second and there was a way his hand
- 55:12Speaker 3: was in his glove. Okay, fine. Maybe they were laying, but,
- 55:16Speaker 3: Before Christian Yelich got on second, Sal Freelick still had
- 55:18Speaker 3: to have a great at-bat to get that. He stole second.
- 55:21Speaker 3: But they were showing me when he brings his leg
- 55:24Speaker 3: up and he starts coming home. I mean, it's microscopic.
- 55:29Speaker 3: To me, it's microscopic. I don't know. And then here
- 55:32Speaker 3: it is, Freelick going to his neck. I mean, there's
- 55:34Speaker 3: a lot of questions I have. But I'm still Mason Miller.
- 55:37Speaker 3: I'm still throwing 104 miles an hour. If I throw
- 55:39Speaker 3: a good pitch, I don't care what– I faced Johan Centeno.
- 55:42Speaker 3: We knew every pitch that was coming, we couldn't hit him.
- 55:45Speaker 4: That that's exactly it. I mean, Randy Johnson tipped for
- 55:47Speaker 4: years and no one could hit it. You can tell
- 55:50Speaker 4: Mason Miller could glove sign his pitches and you're not going.
- 55:52Speaker 6: To be able to hit it.
- 55:53Speaker 4: Now, was he tipping? It's not, you know, it's not impossible.
- 55:57Speaker 4: They're looking at every little thing. They have more time
- 55:59Speaker 4: to dig into it and to school all their hitters
- 56:02Speaker 4: about what he's doing, but you still got to hit it.
- 56:05Speaker 4: And that stuff is ungodly.
- 56:08Speaker 2: Rob, I want to look at the, uh, Schlittler Peralta
- 56:11Speaker 2: matchup and what, what you have seen from, uh, Peralta.
- 56:15Speaker 2: I think we all know we're getting the three different
- 56:17Speaker 2: fastballs with Schlittler. But the concept that this is sort
- 56:22Speaker 2: of a lock Yankee win, well, if Peralta was wearing
- 56:26Speaker 2: a Met uniform, maybe, but he's not. So there's a
- 56:29Speaker 2: big difference here. You know, state the case for what
- 56:33Speaker 2: gives Peralta his confidence back. You know, he's smiling again.
- 56:38Speaker 2: That certainly helps. But what the heck's going on there
- 56:40Speaker 2: that he's able to be so dominant his last half
- 56:43Speaker 2: dozen starts?
- 56:45Speaker 4: Lots of different things, and you're right. Like Pep Intercept,
- 56:48Speaker 4: changing teams sometimes is a big deal. But he's also
- 56:51Speaker 4: changed his mechanics.
- 56:51Speaker 6: A little bit.
- 56:52Speaker 4: His arm is a little bit different. He's a little
- 56:55Speaker 4: bit higher. His extension's back to where it was. He's
- 56:59Speaker 4: changed his pitch mix. And sometimes it's just a matter
- 57:02Speaker 4: of confidence. Like these could be placebos, or they could
- 57:06Speaker 4: be real. Like his fastball will play better the more
- 57:08Speaker 4: extension he gets. He is looking more like the fastball
- 57:12Speaker 4: Freddy that we know and love.
- 57:14Speaker 6: And when he's on, he's nasty.
- 57:15Speaker 4: I think people are forgetting how good a pitcher this
- 57:18Speaker 4: dude is, and it is definitely not a gimme going
- 57:21Speaker 4: up against that if I'm the Yankees. Now, Schlittler, of course,
- 57:26Speaker 4: I'd be totally comfortable any game that that dude pitches.
- 57:30Speaker 1: Do you think the same thing applies to Schlittler as
- 57:32Speaker 1: they were talking about on the broadcast with Garrett Cole's
- 57:37Speaker 1: induced vertical break being 19 inches in the trop? compared
- 57:42Speaker 1: to 17 at Yankee Stadium. Does that also give Cam
- 57:46Speaker 1: Schlittler a little bit of a boost too, or is
- 57:48Speaker 1: it just the way that Cole throws his fastball?
- 57:52Speaker 4: You know, I got to look deeper into that about
- 57:54Speaker 4: what he does indoors because it is specific with respect
- 57:56Speaker 4: to Cole, my understanding, but it wouldn't surprise me. Like,
- 58:00Speaker 4: Schlittler doesn't need any help, but if his fastball does
- 58:03Speaker 4: play better, I mean, he loves that. He loves just
- 58:05Speaker 4: living up in the zone, but you saw him break
- 58:07Speaker 4: out that curveball now. that no matter how many times
- 58:10Speaker 4: you see him, he has the ability to switch things
- 58:12Speaker 4: up and be nasty with that. So, I mean, they're
- 58:15Speaker 4: going to have their hands full, but it could be like,
- 58:17Speaker 4: it could, it could help him.
- 58:20Speaker 2: Rob, let's get into you and Joey Votto. Can we
- 58:22Speaker 2: please get into you and Joey Votto? And I'll be
- 58:25Speaker 2: honest with you. I was watching and I heard when
- 58:28Speaker 2: Joey said, well, they're just not going to score another run.
- 58:33Speaker 2: It's similar to Tim Kirshen saying, nothing's bad going to
- 58:35Speaker 2: happen on our travels between Boston and Tampa. Like, Now
- 58:39Speaker 2: it's almost a lock. But as soon as Joey said,
- 58:41Speaker 2: I don't see the Braves scoring any more runs the
- 58:44Speaker 2: rest of the way, that's a long plank to go
- 58:49Speaker 2: walk and stay dry on. And then you kind of
- 58:53Speaker 2: jumped all over for him. Did you sense that right
- 58:55Speaker 2: when he said it or did you sense it as
- 58:57Speaker 2: soon as the ball left the yard?
- 58:59Speaker 4: Oh, no, I sensed it when he said it because
- 59:00Speaker 4: I was like, that's a bold statement, young man. Like,
- 59:04Speaker 4: you know, all of us, like I I've been there
- 59:07Speaker 4: like on social media all the time. Like this guy
- 59:10Speaker 4: looks unhittable. Done that with Gavin Williams before. Like this
- 59:13Speaker 4: guy's unhittable. And then all of a sudden he gets shelled.
- 59:15Speaker 4: I'm like, what was that stupid ninja jinx man? So
- 59:19Speaker 4: it was more of a picking up of like, we
- 59:21Speaker 4: all got to learn when you, you know, it's Joey
- 59:23Speaker 4: making a debut, but the broadcaster jinx is real.
- 59:28Speaker 6: Vets like y'all know that. And Joey will get there.
- 59:33Speaker 2: He's learning, he's learning.
- 59:35Speaker 3: Rob, I 1 million percent disagree with you on this.
- 59:39Speaker 3: I mean, trust me, someone that does games all the time.
- 59:42Speaker 3: It's not my fault or Adam Amin or Adam Wainwright's fault.
- 59:45Speaker 3: If someone gives up a hit, I have nothing to
- 59:48Speaker 3: do with it. And if you believe that, then maybe
- 59:50Speaker 3: you shouldn't be a ninja because ninjas were always well prepared, right?
- 59:53Speaker 3: So they knew every scenario before they went in. But
- 59:56Speaker 3: I do have anything with one of the things Joey
- 59:58Speaker 3: Votto said. I know you're a pitching guy and you
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: know how good this stuff is. But Joey Votto said
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: guys that hit 300 in the past would hit 240 now.
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: And Louisa rise would hit 400. I saw Tony Gwynn jr.
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: The last couple of nights. And he, and we talked
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: about this and he goes, you really think my dad
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: was going to hit two 40. Come on. If Louisa
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: rise would hit 400, Tony Gwynn might hit 500. If
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: that's what he's saying. I mean, come on. Like I
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: get that the stuff is better and I get that,
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: but guys that hit 300, like Tony Gwynn and guys
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: are always going to hit that because they'll figure out
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: a way to get the hits.
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: I could not agree with you more on that. Like
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: there's a point where there are guys that would do great.
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: I mean, I remember talking to Chipper and Chipper going,
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: I couldn't hit 200 nowadays. And I'm like, Chipper, I
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: saw you hit your whole career. There is no way
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: that's true. Like, yeah, we're just overstating the case in
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: that situation. Yes, it's harder to hit today, but guys
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: that were hitting back then, they would have been, Tony
- 1:00:52Speaker 4: Gwynn would have been more prepared.
- 1:00:54Speaker 6: Like he had more information on these pitchers. He might've
- 1:00:57Speaker 6: been better.
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: Who knows? Yeah, Chipper wouldn't be able to hit 300
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: today because he's, what, 55 years old now? The game
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: would be really tough. He would hit closer to my
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: career average, like 200. I think the.
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: Dude who owned, he owned Randy Johnson. He owned the
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: greatest pitcher you'll ever see, and now he couldn't hit
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: these guys?
- 1:01:18Speaker 6: That's just made up.
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: Good hitters will figure it out whatever era they're in.
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: And pitching ninja always sounds better than pitching Rob, so
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: you don't have to lose your ninja aspect. But you
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: brought up Gavin Williams. You have Gavin Williams. You also
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: have Gattis. You also have Cade Smith. You also have Sabrowski.
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: If you are Steven Vogt, you have your best pitcher
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: on the mound for some reason in Game 2. How
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: quick do you pull that trigger when the big rig
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: could put up 10 punches?
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: Dude, this is totally a feel thing for me because
- 1:01:56Speaker 4: Gavin Williams is two different pitchers.
- 1:01:58Speaker 6: When he's on, he's Cy Young quality.
- 1:02:00Speaker 4: There are not many, if any, better pitchers in the
- 1:02:05Speaker 4: AL than him when he's on. Racks up strikeouts, just
- 1:02:08Speaker 4: a dominant force. And then when he's not on, he's
- 1:02:12Speaker 4: Cy Yuck. There's just like, he can't do anything right.
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: And it's really a coin flip. If he's on, I
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: don't touch him. Like I'm letting him run, but you're
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: going to know. And you should know pretty quickly because that,
- 1:02:26Speaker 4: you know, a hundred miles an hour with that sweeper,
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: forget it. Like that's one of the nastiest pitches to
- 1:02:31Speaker 4: my eyes that you'll see.
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: So Rob, you know, we've been trained to believe, rightfully so,
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: that Miller and Morejon are and the Padre bullpen is
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: as good as any on the planet. Can you make
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: the case that the Brewers, with Romero and Uribe and
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: Ashby and McGill, are as good?
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: They're certainly up there, and they're certainly not a team
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: that you want to get to their bullpen because that's
- 1:03:00Speaker 4: a weakness.
- 1:03:01Speaker 6: Look at all these teams. They have some really good bullpens.
- 1:03:04Speaker 4: Out there, but the Brewers absolutely are very good, and
- 1:03:08Speaker 4: don't sell them short anywhere. Ashby's got some of the
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: nastiest stuff and I don't think a lot of people
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: pay attention to that. So yeah, both of these, both
- 1:03:16Speaker 4: of these bullpens are tough and do not sleep on
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: the Brewers at all. And when you have their starting
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: pitching too, you know, that's a very, very good team.
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: Organizations have, have convinced us, Crassie. Organizations have convinced us
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: that the race to the bullpen is a race you
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: almost want to lose. You used to want to win it.
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: I'm not sure you want to win, like be careful
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: what you wish for. Because every team, that's a death wish,
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: getting into bullpens now.
- 1:03:44Speaker 6: Look what the Braves did yesterday. I mean, they just
- 1:03:47Speaker 6: put piece to piece together. Totally agree.
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: Like, for those who didn't know about Didier Fuentes, like,
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: he has been like a secret weapon the entire year.
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: Like Grant Taylor is for the White Sox. Like, you
- 1:03:59Speaker 4: bring him in and he just freaking dominates. And it
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: was great to see him do it on the big
- 1:04:03Speaker 4: stage with such a low heartbeat. And then Ray Kerr, like,
- 1:04:07Speaker 4: my God. It's Chris Sale in disguise.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: Yeah, what were you saying? Ashby, I think we had
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: Trevor McGill on, and he calls him like, two 76
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: or two 36. Cause that's his like stuff plus score.
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: And nobody even knows what it is or anyway, that's
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: his nickname form, but I want you to do it
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: right now. You have to rank them because I could
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: hear in your mind, in your, in your words that
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: you have the Padres ahead of the Brewers bullpen, but
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: I want you to rank them. Those three, the Braves,
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: the Padres and the Brewers and explain why you have
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: that order.
- 1:04:45Speaker 4: Yeah, that's so tough because, I mean, the Padres have
- 1:04:49Speaker 4: gotten it done and they have the big guy at
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: the end. Like, there's nobody better than Mason Miller. Yesterday
- 1:04:55Speaker 4: be damned, like, he's still Mason Miller. The Brewers and
- 1:04:59Speaker 4: the Braves, like, I haven't even thought about comparing those
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: because the Braves, you have Bobby Fast, you have freaking
- 1:05:05Speaker 4: Robert Suarez, it's not your closer.
- 1:05:07Speaker 6: Like, he's a stud.
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: You have Iggy at the end of games and Didier Fuentes,
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: Dylan Dodd.
- 1:05:13Speaker 6: Like, they can throw.
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: Dylan Lee, they can throw a lot of arms at you.
- 1:05:18Speaker 4: Like I put them, they're neck and neck.
- 1:05:20Speaker 6: Like, I don't know. I don't know. Why are you
- 1:05:23Speaker 6: putting me on a spot like that, man?
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: I can't tell you.
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: You're still the pitching ninja. You'll be pitching Rob if
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: you don't choose.
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: I am going to go.
- 1:05:33Speaker 6: I will go Braves over Brewers by a hair.
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: Said it here. Pitching ninja. He did not pitching Rob. Wait, Rob.
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: You forgot a team. You forgot a team in there.
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: The Dodgers, you didn't even mention them. Where's their bullpen rank?
- 1:05:50Speaker 4: Well, yeah, it's really good when they put it together.
- 1:05:53Speaker 4: Like you saw the arms, if they're at their best,
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: if Enriquez is throwing strikes, that dude, you know, 104
- 1:06:00Speaker 4: and a nasty slider and all that plays. And Edwin Diaz,
- 1:06:04Speaker 4: like when he's at the top of his game, he's
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: great too.
- 1:06:06Speaker 6: Like they're up there.
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: But I don't have the consistency out of it. And
- 1:06:12Speaker 4: And Rokey scared me. Like last night, he scared me.
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: And I thought the bunt let him kind of off
- 1:06:16Speaker 4: the hook that inning. I know we love old school baseball,
- 1:06:20Speaker 4: but he wasn't throwing strikes, and then you gave him
- 1:06:23Speaker 4: an out.
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: In the end, when it's all said and done, it
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: could be the White Sox who end up with the
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: best bullpen, and that's the biggest story of this postseason.
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: That's for you, AJ. And by the way, defending Ninja
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: here for a second, he did only ask him about
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: those three teams. You introduced the Dodgers late. I mean, right, Rob?
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: But that's their weakness.
- 1:06:44Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: Right, Rob?
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 1:06:46Speaker 6: That's why you're the pro. Yeah.
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: And by the way, if you haven't seen Trevor McGill
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: throw with his 100 and that breaking ball, if he
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: lands that breaking ball, nobody touched. I mean, he threw
- 1:06:56Speaker 3: three heaters by Machado. He threw three heaters by Tatis,
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: and they had zero chance.
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: That's the Brewers' case.
- 1:07:03Speaker 6: And your rebate's great, too.
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: Yeah, like, I don't think you can, when, it depends
- 1:07:08Speaker 4: on who's hot, who's best, right? Like, You can't tell
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: when these guys are putting it together.
- 1:07:13Speaker 6: They're all really, really good.
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: And that's the beauty of the postseason right now is
- 1:07:17Speaker 4: these pitching staffs seem to be at the top of
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: their game.
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: It is one of the all-time greatest beard mustache combos.
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: When we get into December, do you frost it? And
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: do you have another job?
- 1:07:31Speaker 6: Do I have another job?
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: I should.
- 1:07:34Speaker 6: I need to do that. I need to do like
- 1:07:35Speaker 6: a sandwich.
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: Oh my gosh. That's what I see right here.
- 1:07:38Speaker 6: I'm missing my calling, dude. Absolutely.
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: No, no, no, no. You've nailed your calling. But December's
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: a quiet month, maybe really quiet this year, just in
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: case you needed it. But again, we appreciate you being
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: on here with us, Rob. Thanks very much. But enjoy
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: the games today and the rest of the way. Hot
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: Corner is presented by the Fox One app. Let's recap here.
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: Teams that have won the first two games at home, fellas,
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: in the division series in this 2-2-1 format. They've won 92%
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: of the time. They've lost three in 36. That bodes
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: really well to go 2-0 at your first two games
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: at home. Is that going to continue with the Brewers-Padres?
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: Because San Diego is a hell of a place to
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: try to go in there and win.
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: Well, I can't believe we're an hour and 40 minutes
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: into the show. We haven't talked about this series yet
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: because those first two games were like two of the
- 1:08:33Speaker 3: greatest games I've ever witnessed with the tie France, homer,
- 1:08:37Speaker 3: not homer off the ceiling. And then they opened the
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: roof yesterday, so there's no wires. I mean, like as
- 1:08:43Speaker 3: Murph said, it was you reaching down and having the
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: ball hit. And was it a homer?
- 1:08:47Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 1:08:48Speaker 3: Murph said he thought it was foul, but I stood
- 1:08:50Speaker 3: where Murph stands in the dugout because he was looking
- 1:08:53Speaker 3: down the line. He's so far off the line, he
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: couldn't tell. I mean, there were so many things that
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: happened in the first game. Maura Holm gave up the
- 1:08:59Speaker 3: homer to Wilson. to William Contreras. And then game two yesterday,
- 1:09:03Speaker 3: I mean, what a game. From Mason Miller to the
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: bullpen of the Brewers to the errors, which both these
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: teams don't make errors. There's errors that led to the run,
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: and the Jackson-Churio at-bat obviously was one of the great
- 1:09:15Speaker 3: at-bats we've seen. So, listen.
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: Listen.
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: Do I think this series is over? Absolutely not. Do
- 1:09:20Speaker 3: I want it to go five games? Absolutely. Because the
- 1:09:22Speaker 3: first two games have been so great. I hope the
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: next two games are just as good. But the atmosphere
- 1:09:26Speaker 3: in San Diego is going to be crazy. The atmosphere
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: in Milwaukee was one of the best I've ever seen.
- 1:09:31Speaker 3: And San Diego is going to try and top it.
- 1:09:33Speaker 3: So I don't know if the Brewers can get it
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: done in three, but I know this. I hope it
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: goes five because I want to see three more games
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: of these two teams play because they are fun and
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: they are into it. And it is an electric atmosphere
- 1:09:45Speaker 3: in both places.
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: Yeah, 100%. But my question is, I– and, AJ, you
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: were there, so I don't know if you could tell
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: or not. But the reason Ty France, I think, argues
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: that is I think he thought that ball was foul.
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: I thought he thought that ball hit a wire foul.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: I know everyone wants to talk about, well, it would
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: have gone over. No, it wouldn't have. These two times
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: it didn't go over. These three times it did. Whatever
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: it is, could you tell if the ball was foul? No.
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: But Ty France has the best angle of it, meaning
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: if it hit a wire in foul territory, it should
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: have been foul, but there's no marking up there. So,
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: in my opinion, the ball doesn't lie, right? Isn't that
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: what they say in basketball? Yeah, that's what they say
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: in basketball. You're right, Crassie, multi-sport guy. That's exactly what
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: they said.
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: Like, it's just weird in a baseball game to see
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: a ball hit a– hit a roof, but that happens.
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: It's happened before. It's going to happen again when the
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: Rays open up their new ballpark. I mean, The idea
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: that guys now are throwing harder than ever, they're also
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: hitting the ball higher than ever. And we have roofs
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: that you've got to make some obscene amount of height
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: to them. It's not going to happen. So, again, here's
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: sort of some indication as to whether the ball, it
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: doesn't seem clear, whether it was going to land fair,
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: whether it was going to land foul. Everybody knows this.
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: They know what the ground rule is. And if it
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: hits the ball, hits the roof in fair territory, It's
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: in play. So to the credit of everybody, it was
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: a discussion they had beforehand, and everybody knew the rules.
- 1:11:24Speaker 3: Carl, by the way, so Adam Amin, our play-by-play guy,
- 1:11:28Speaker 3: reached out to StatCast, I believe it was. And he
- 1:11:31Speaker 3: explained it, and I don't know the exact word for word,
- 1:11:35Speaker 3: but basically what they said is everyone's looking at the
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: StatCast and saying, oh, it was only going to go 325,
- 1:11:40Speaker 3: so it wasn't going out. But when you talk to
- 1:11:43Speaker 3: the StatCast people, they say we can't give you where
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: it's going to land or a true distance because we don't,
- 1:11:48Speaker 3: we don't do it like that. It was kind of
- 1:11:49Speaker 3: still going up when it hit the, hit the wire there,
- 1:11:52Speaker 3: whatever that thing is. I guess it's a wire. I
- 1:11:54Speaker 3: don't know what it is, but whatever it hit that
- 1:11:57Speaker 3: they don't know. So everyone's like, Oh, well stack has
- 1:11:59Speaker 3: said only went three 25 stack has people will tell you,
- 1:12:02Speaker 3: they don't know. They're not sure where it would have
- 1:12:03Speaker 3: ended up. Listen, we know when I thought it was
- 1:12:05Speaker 3: going to be a home run from where we were sitting.
- 1:12:07Speaker 3: Now we're not right down the line, but just, I've
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: seen a lot of home runs. Wayne was given up
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: a lot of home runs. You kind of know, when
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: you see it now, I don't know because we'll never know.
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: And again, listen, the Padres didn't, they left a village
- 1:12:20Speaker 3: on base in that game.
- 1:12:21Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:12:21Speaker 3: So that's not there. I mean, of course everyone looks
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: at that, but I mean, just to have that happen
- 1:12:26Speaker 3: in game one and then game two, again, just, just amazing. And,
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: and I don't know what this series can do to
- 1:12:32Speaker 3: top the first two games, but I can't wait to
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: find out.
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: I think one of the things guys that is, that
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: has been impressed upon me and watching these games and
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: maybe even yesterday as well, especially that game, speed plays
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: a huge role in Major League Baseball games. It doesn't
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: get talked about enough. That play Cronenworth didn't make was
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: forced because Hamilton was flying down the line. Tatis running
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: the bases is a sight to behold because when he
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: gets going, you can't stop him. The Rays put pressure
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: on you with their speed. We talk about power arms
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: and power bats and we talked about bunting. We kind
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: of overlook, I think, the valuable aspect in generally close games.
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: And we saw it a couple of years ago when
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: Mookie Betts, secondary lead at third, helped the Dodgers win
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: a World Series. Speed matters, and it puts pressure on defense,
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: and it's been a factor, not only on balls off
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: the bat, not a guy's arms, but on the bases
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: with their legs. You agree with that, Kratz? Are you
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: seeing that? I would 100%.
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: That's why I think it's the two best games of
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: the entire postseason so far. They have a combination of
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: elite talent, speed, And normally good defense, so you're surprised
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: when there is that gaff-like terrain up the middle. Like
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: the fact that Cronenworth bobbled that ball, but it was
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: all created by speed and athleticism. And a lot of times,
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: teams are not made by that. I'm not discounting teams
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: that are made by power and homers, but... This is
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: why these teams are where they are, and they both
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: pushed the envelope, and they both were in it until
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: the end of each game, and the Brewers are up 2-0.
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: They are up 2-0.
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: Should Manny Machado get heat like Austin Wells is getting
- 1:14:24Speaker 3: heat for getting thrown out of third? Because Jackson Merrill
- 1:14:27Speaker 3: got a hit.
