- 0:00Podcasthero.com Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed
- 0:06to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:08I'm our host, Andrew McGivern for October 15th.
- 0:12Today is Global Hand Washing Day, an international observance
- 0:16that might seem simple but addresses one of the most
- 0:18effective public health interventions in the world.
- 0:22Celebrated annually on October 15th since 2008, this day was
- 0:27established by the Global Hand Washing Partnership to increase
- 0:30awareness about the importance of washing hands with soap.
- 0:35The statistics behind this simple act are remarkable and
- 0:38washing with soap can reduce diarrheal diseases by about 30%
- 0:43and respiratory infections by about 20%.
- 0:47During the COVID-19 pandemic, we all witnessed first hand how
- 0:50crucial hand hygiene is in preventing the spread of
- 0:53disease. Yet even today, billions of
- 0:56people worldwide lack adequate access to hand washing
- 0:59facilities, and many people who have access don't wash their
- 1:04hands regularly or properly. What makes Global Hand Washing
- 1:09Day important is it's recognition that sometimes the
- 1:12most powerful solutions to complex problems are
- 1:15surprisingly simple. Clean hands save lives.
- 1:20It's that straightforward, yet that profound.
- 1:25And that brings us to today's quote from entrepreneur and
- 1:27philanthropist Bill Gates, who once said clean water and hand
- 1:33washing are the most important interventions.
- 1:38A succinct observation drawn from years of global health work
- 1:42cuts right to the heart of what Global Hand Washing Day
- 1:44represents. In all his foundations work
- 1:48addressing complex health challenges of worldwide, Gates
- 1:52has consistently emphasized that some of the most powerful
- 1:55interventions are the simplest ones.
- 1:59Think about what this means. We often assume that solving
- 2:02major health problems requires cutting edge technology,
- 2:06expensive treatments, or complex medical interventions.
- 2:10But Gates, who has invested billions in global health, keeps
- 2:16coming back to fundamentals. Clean water and hand washing.
- 2:21The beauty of hand washing as an intervention is its
- 2:24accessibility and effectiveness doesn't require expensive
- 2:28equipment, specialized training or high tech infrastructure.
- 2:32It just requires soap, water and knowledge.
- 2:35Yet it prevents millions of deaths annually, particularly
- 2:39among children under 5. Gates understands what public
- 2:44health experts have proven. Hand washing is one of the
- 2:47highest return investments we can make in human health.
- 2:51The simplicity of the solution doesn't diminish its power, it
- 2:55enhances it. Because simple solutions can be
- 2:58implemented widely and sustained over time, Global Hand Washing
- 3:03Day reminds us that sometimes the most important interventions
- 3:07aren't the most complicated ones.
- 3:11My first hand recent experience with this comes from just a few
- 3:15weeks ago when I got a gastrointestinal virus.
- 3:17Or maybe it was food poisoning. I'm not sure.
- 3:19I'm pretty good at washing my hands normally, but I'm not sure
- 3:22what happened. Somehow I got either some bad
- 3:26food or a virus somehow or other, or food poisoning.
- 3:31I don't know what it is, what it was, but it was nasty.
- 3:34Yeah, weeks later, I'm I'm still dealing with it.
- 3:38So wash your hands. So today on our Global Hand
- 3:42Washing Day and Bill Gates insight by being more
- 3:45intentional about hand hygiene, not just washing your hands, but
- 3:49washing them properly for at least 20 seconds with soap
- 3:53covering all surfaces, including between the fingers and under
- 3:56the nails. Think about the key times to
- 3:59wash before eating or preparing food, after preparing food,
- 4:04after using the bathroom, after coughing or sneezing, after
- 4:08touching surfaces in public places.
- 4:11These simple acts protect not just you, but everyone you come
- 4:16in contact with. AIDS has devoted enormous
- 4:19resources to global health, yet keeps emphasizing this
- 4:23fundamental intervention that tells us something important.
- 4:27Don't overlook simple solutions in favor of complicated ones.
- 4:31Sometimes the most powerful action is the most basic one.
- 4:36That's going to do it for today. I'm Anna McGivern, signing off
- 4:40for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 4:44Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
