Transcript
- 0:00Do you know what Parkinson takes that hardly anybody warns you
- 0:03about your voice. You know, one day you're
- 0:06chatting away and people can hear you just fine, and the next
- 0:09day somebody leans in and says, sorry, can you repeat that?
- 0:13Or Carmen tells me I'm mumbling and I'm thinking mumbling.
- 0:16I thought I was practically shouting.
- 0:19And that's what we're talking about today, Why Parkinson's
- 0:23messes with your voice, the science behind it, what I've
- 0:26personally gone through and the tools that actually help.
- 0:29And we have Carmen's Corner care partner corner again to share
- 0:33what it's like from her side. Now stick with me till the end
- 0:36because I've got a Bryce isn't for you.
- 0:37That you're going to want to shout, not whisper.
- 0:41Welcome to living with Parkinson's, the good, the bad,
- 0:45and the reality. Real talk, real life, real
- 0:49community with Bryce Perry. Let's begin.
- 0:54Well, welcome back to the channel.
- 0:55If you're new here, my name is Bryce and this is living with
- 0:58Parkinson's, the good, the bad and the reality.
- 1:01Now, this channel is all about the real Parkinson's journey,
- 1:04the tough stuff, the funny stuff, and the stuff nobody
- 1:08likes to talk about. Now if that sounds like
- 1:10something you need, then go ahead and subscribe and come
- 1:13along for the ride. OK, so let's dig in.
- 1:17Here's the science behind this. Parkinson's happens because the
- 1:21brain loses dopamine cells. And dopamine isn't just about
- 1:24moving your arms and legs. It's about those tiny muscles in
- 1:27your face, your throat, and your chest and all the stuff you need
- 1:31to speak. Now when those muscles don't get
- 1:34the same signal, your vocal folds don't close as tightly,
- 1:38your breath support weakens and your pitch shrinks.
- 1:42And that's why a lot of us get something called hypothemia, hip
- 1:46hippophonia, which is just a fancy word for your voice
- 1:49getting softer. Now here's the kicker.
- 1:54You don't notice it yourself. Your brain thinks you're talking
- 1:57normally. So when somebody says can you
- 1:59speak up, it feels unfair because you're in your head.
- 2:02You're already speaking up. Add that to slower tongue and
- 2:06lip movement so your words start to blur together and and then
- 2:10your breathing gets shallow so you run out of you run out of
- 2:14air halfway through a sentence. It's not being lazy, it's not
- 2:18being die. It's literally Parkinson's
- 2:22changing the way your body produces speech.
- 2:26Now that's the science. Let me bring this down to real
- 2:29life. Early on, I didn't notice
- 2:31anything. I was giving presentations.
- 2:33I was leading meetings, and my voice was fine.
- 2:36But over time, little things started happening.
- 2:39I'd tell a story in a group and nobody would respond.
- 2:42And I'd think, well, maybe it wasn't funny.
- 2:45And then Carmen would lean over and whisper, They didn't hear
- 2:48you. Hey, I knew I was funny.
- 2:50So it had to be that, right? Restaurants become tricky.
- 2:54I'd order food, and the server would stare at me like, like
- 2:58they were trying to decode a secret message.
- 2:59And then they'd just turn to Carmen and say, what?
- 3:03What, what? What's he having?
- 3:06Let me tell you, nothing makes you feel more invisible than
- 3:09having your wife order your burger for you.
- 3:12And don't even get me started on phone calls.
- 3:15I've told whole stories only to hear the other person go, hello,
- 3:18Are you still there? And I'm like, yes, I'm here.
- 3:22I just gave you the punchline. But to them, it was silence.
- 3:27And that was the moment I realized this wasn't just
- 3:29frustrating, it was shutting me out of connection.
- 3:34So what can we do about it? Well, the very first thing is
- 3:38speech therapy. There's a program called LSVT
- 3:41Loud. It's basically boot camp for
- 3:43your voice. You, you, you practice speaking
- 3:46louder than feels normal, stretching your words,
- 3:50exaggerating everything. At first, I'll be honest with
- 3:53you, at first it, Oh my gosh, at first it just feels
- 3:58embarrassing. It's weird, it's strange.
- 4:01You feel silly. It's like you're auditioning for
- 4:03a cartoon. But guess what?
- 4:05It works. It retains.
- 4:08It retrains your brain to hear your volume correctly.
- 4:13It's huge. Second daily practice.
- 4:18Now this one's on us. Read out loud, sing in the car,
- 4:22scare the neighbors with your best Elvis impersonation.
- 4:24I've done that. It's not great, but I've done
- 4:26it. And here's where tech helps.
- 4:29The voice analyst app is what it's is one I've used.
- 4:32It shows you how loud you're speaking in real time.
- 4:36There's even a free version. Another one is Decibel X.
- 4:40It's basically a sound meter for your phone.
- 4:42It's like having a little coach in your pocket.
- 4:44And those things can help you everyday.
- 4:48Here's the third thing you can do, breathing and posture.
- 4:51Sit up, sit up straight, take deep breaths and think of a
- 4:56filling of balloon from the bottom up.
- 4:59Carmen always uses this one. She always says to me, use your
- 5:02diaphragm instead of your throat.
- 5:04And she's right. The sound is instantly stronger.
- 5:10And 4th resources. If you want some structured
- 5:15support, check out LSVT Global or the Parkinson Voice Project.
- 5:19Both of them offer programs designed specifically for people
- 5:22like us. I'll put the links in the
- 5:24description so you can explore them for yourself.
- 5:26Because I'm telling you, you need to get on this.
- 5:29OK, Now it's time. You know what?
- 5:31We introduced this last episode, asked you how you liked it, and
- 5:35resoundedly, everybody was saying they loved it.
- 5:37So it's now time for Carmen's part.
- 5:40Carmen's. Carmen's care.
- 5:42Parker Corner. OK, so this is what she'd say.
- 5:47And what she said, what she told me to say.
- 5:49When Bryce's voice drops, it's not just tough on him, it's
- 5:52tough on me too, because I want to hear him and I don't want to
- 5:55miss what he's saying. Yes, I get frustrated when I
- 5:59have to ask him to repeat himself three times.
- 6:03Great. But I've learned to use cues
- 6:05instead. Instead of just saying what over
- 6:08and over, I'll say, use your diaphragm, not your throat.
- 6:12He knows exactly what I mean and I can hear the difference
- 6:16immediately. So my tip for other care
- 6:19partners is this find a gentle cue that you both understand.
- 6:24It saves frustration and it keeps the conversation going.
- 6:29Well, there you go see that's why I love Carmen's care partner
- 6:32corner. She's always about the practical
- 6:34tips and to be honest, she's. She's always right.
- 6:38Usually right now, she's always right.
- 6:40A lot of times, right, I'm right once in awhile.
- 6:43Anyway, here's the bottom line. Parkinson's might make your
- 6:47voice softer, but it doesn't have to silence you.
- 6:50Keep practicing using the tools and lean on your partner and
- 6:54anybody around you. And most importantly, keep
- 6:56speaking up because your story deserves to be heard.
- 7:01And if you're watching right now, let's get the chat rolling.
- 7:05How many of you been asked to repeat yourself this week?
- 7:08Drop a yes in the comments if you've had one, and let's see
- 7:11how many times you've done it. And let's see how common this
- 7:14is. OK, you made it to the bright
- 7:17system and here it is. With Parkinson's, your voice may
- 7:21fade, but you're just you're. Oh man, let's try that again.
- 7:26With Parkinson's, your voice may fade, but your story deserves to
- 7:30be shouted from the rooftops and it really does.
- 7:33You deserve it. And I need you to work on this.
- 7:36And if you're sitting here saying, I hope my voice doesn't
- 7:39get that bad, start now. Don't wait till it's down the
- 7:43road. Don't wait till it starts
- 7:44getting soft. Do it now.
- 7:45I'm telling you, you'll be you'll thank me for this.
- 7:49And thanks for hanging out for me with me today.
- 7:51And I want you to share your own experience in the comments.
- 7:55I really do read every single one and reply to them.
- 7:58If you want more support, more tools and real connection, check
- 8:01out the inner circle community, the links in the description.
- 8:05And I've got a big thing coming up.
- 8:07I've got a newly diagnosed program coming.
- 8:09If that's something you're interested in, interested in,
- 8:12let me know in the comments. I'll be promoting it soon and I
- 8:15want to get you in right off the bat.
- 8:19I love you guys. Thanks for tuning in.
