- 2:03Speaker 4: Janicia, please reintroduce yourself.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Hey, I forgot to do my AKAs, but I do.
- 2:10Speaker 3: I have a few left over from before. So we'll
- 2:12Speaker 3: do that. Hey, everybody. Thanks for welcoming me back. It's Janicia, a.k.a.

- 2:20Speaker 3: Storm Every Damn Day, a.k.a. Why Would You Say That?
- 2:26Speaker 5: Yeah, I saw you, you know, watching with the judging
- 2:32Speaker 5: eye throughout all the AKAs. So, you know, I feel
- 2:36Speaker 5: that last one very much. I feel that last one
- 2:40Speaker 5: very much so.
- 2:42Speaker 4: And we are here, folks.
- 2:44Speaker 5: You know, we assembled this, you know, Justice League here
- 2:47Speaker 5: to discuss Lantern's episode for the weenie. Genesia, since it's
- 2:55Speaker 5: been a while, and I just want to know what
- 2:58Speaker 5: you thought about the weenie.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Oh, wow. So easy.
- 3:04Speaker 2: We're not going to make it through this one.
- 3:07Speaker 6: It was a lot.
- 3:11Speaker 3: It was a lot. So I'm enjoying the series. I
- 3:15Speaker 3: thought it was a great episode given everything that we
- 3:18Speaker 3: have been given to work with so far, which has
- 3:21Speaker 3: been a lot. I have a lot of questions. I
- 3:24Speaker 3: think that the theme, I don't want to say all
- 3:26Speaker 3: of them now. So this is just like, I guess
- 3:28Speaker 3: my initial surface thing, but I will say this, the
- 3:31Speaker 3: theme of John and Zoe having sex, it comes up
- 3:36Speaker 3: every single episode, every single one of the two. And
- 3:39Speaker 3: this has come up again, and I'm glad it has,
- 3:41Speaker 3: because I was thinking, how am I going to talk
- 3:43Speaker 3: about before I even watch the episode? I'm like, I
- 3:45Speaker 3: have to talk about these two. OK, and how am
- 3:48Speaker 3: I going to do that? But I don't know if
- 3:50Speaker 3: luckily or unluckily they gave it to us again. And
- 3:52Speaker 3: so we have a reason to discuss it. But that's
- 3:55Speaker 3: what's top of mind for me. But yeah, it was
- 3:57Speaker 3: an interesting episode. I also want to make sure that
- 4:00Speaker 3: we talk about I mean, we're going to talk about race. Again,
- 4:04Speaker 3: I'm sure. But I love that they made Hal racist. Okay?
- 4:10Speaker 3: I'm living for it. I love it. I love it.
- 4:14Speaker 3: For so many reasons. My man said, Jazz, it's a
- 4:17Speaker 3: bad thing.
- 4:18Speaker 5: I'm like, you are never beating the allegations, Hal. Like,
- 4:21Speaker 5: off bat, fam.
- 4:23Speaker 4: Like, Never beating them. I do want to know, though,
- 4:26Speaker 4: what was your first point, though? Like, let's go right
- 4:29Speaker 4: into that.
- 4:29Speaker 3: What is, you know, with Zoe and... Yeah. My biggest thing. So,
- 4:35Speaker 3: I feel like, and I haven't had time to rewatch
- 4:37Speaker 3: that episode, but I feel like I wasn't given enough
- 4:41Speaker 3: of a reason initially as to why they hooked up.
- 4:45Speaker 3: And I understand this theory of, you know, a guy
- 4:48Speaker 3: will fuck everything. Fuck anything or whatever. Right. OK, but
- 4:52Speaker 3: some guys can fuck anybody. OK, and we're not going
- 4:57Speaker 3: to pretend that this Jon Stewart, even how he was
- 5:00Speaker 3: originally drawn after Sidney Poitier, we're not going to pretend
- 5:04Speaker 3: that he's not the hottest guy in that fucking town
- 5:06Speaker 3: and could for real fuck anybody. And the actress, I
- 5:11Speaker 3: forget her name. Do we have her name pulled up?
- 5:14Speaker 3: I'll bring it up later. Go ahead. Okay. She's a
- 5:16Speaker 3: beautiful woman, period. The way that she was presented to
- 5:20Speaker 3: us in that first episode didn't give, oh, that's somebody
- 5:23Speaker 3: I want to fuck in the fucking parking lot. That's
- 5:26Speaker 3: just not what it gave that night. She was relaxing.
- 5:29Speaker 3: She was having a drink. She didn't look like the
- 5:32Speaker 3: hottest guy in every room that he walks in is
- 5:36Speaker 3: going to want to fuck. And so it doesn't mean
- 5:38Speaker 3: that he doesn't fuck her, but you got to take
- 5:40Speaker 3: five minutes to to show me what their connection is.
- 5:44Speaker 3: And this just said to me, they're relying on the
- 5:46Speaker 3: fact that guys will fuck anyone. They're relying on the
- 5:50Speaker 3: fact that I don't like to sound like my origins
- 5:54Speaker 3: of a hotel, but are they relying on the fact
- 5:57Speaker 3: that like this black guy will fuck this non-black woman
- 6:00Speaker 3: with long hair who's thin and like that's just default
- 6:04Speaker 3: beautiful and it doesn't matter how we present her? Are
- 6:07Speaker 3: we supposed to pretend that this nigga does not have
- 6:10Speaker 3: the most symmetrical fucking face in the city? You know
- 6:14Speaker 3: what I'm saying? Like, are we supposed to pretend? And
- 6:17Speaker 3: I understand that he was raised to be this kind
- 6:20Speaker 3: of like, you know, he's a nerd.
- 6:22Speaker 5: Right.
- 6:23Speaker 3: And in his field, he is the fucking nerd of
- 6:26Speaker 3: that field. He's he's socially awkward because he has been
- 6:29Speaker 3: so intensely trained in what it is that he was
- 6:32Speaker 3: raised to do. So I understand that that can come
- 6:35Speaker 3: with like, does he not know that he's hot? He
- 6:37Speaker 3: has not had time to get into all that stuff
- 6:40Speaker 3: or whatever. So I could accept a little bit of that,
- 6:43Speaker 3: like social awkwardness. It's no way that that guy follows
- 6:48Speaker 3: her to her car. And fucks her like that. It
- 6:52Speaker 3: just doesn't, I just, I personally, I don't see it
- 6:55Speaker 3: without giving me the five minutes to where she was
- 6:59Speaker 3: like fully in all of her riz. Like she gave
- 7:02Speaker 3: us nothing but like, you want to walk me to
- 7:04Speaker 3: my car? And he just does the fuck. So, so
- 7:07Speaker 3: later on, they try and build this connection. Like, oh, they're,
- 7:09Speaker 3: you know, the two people of color in this town. Okay, cool. I'm, I'm, I'm,
- 7:13Speaker 3: I'm buying what you're picking up down, putting down a
- 7:15Speaker 3: little bit. But to see it again as if they
- 7:18Speaker 3: had this intense connection and as if it's just really
- 7:23Speaker 3: fucking weird to me. It's fucking weird a little bit.
- 7:27Speaker 3: And so, yeah, that for me is one of the
- 7:31Speaker 3: things that, like, I really am really fucking with everything
- 7:34Speaker 3: else that's happening in this series. But I really wish
- 7:36Speaker 3: that they would have taken five minutes to explain to
- 7:39Speaker 3: me why the hottest guy in this fucking town... is
- 7:43Speaker 3: having sex with this older woman who, again, beautiful woman,
- 7:48Speaker 3: but she was like, you know, had a rough fucking day,
- 7:51Speaker 3: whatever day that was. She had a rough fucking day.
- 7:53Speaker 3: She's at the bar. The lighting is not great.
- 7:56Speaker 5: Nope.
- 7:56Speaker 3: Pulling the hottest guy off of a line, off of
- 7:59Speaker 3: a nothing burger pickup line.
- 8:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:03Speaker 3: He's that hard up to fuck a mommy figure?
- 8:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Absolutely the fuck not. Now, I am actually going to
- 8:10Speaker 3: pull in some Hotep bullshit. This is not something that
- 8:12Speaker 3: I said, but it has been described. An actor and
- 8:16Speaker 3: a fellow cosplayer, I don't know if he wants his
- 8:18Speaker 3: name said on that thing, but he mentioned it on
- 8:20Speaker 3: Facebook that he felt like it was a humiliation ritual, right?
- 8:24Speaker 7: And.
- 8:25Speaker 3: I he felt like it was a humiliation ritual for
- 8:28Speaker 3: Aaron Pierre. And I wanted to put in that if
- 8:32Speaker 3: we're going if we're going there, I would include that
- 8:38Speaker 3: it was humiliating for both of them as actors because
- 8:41Speaker 3: I just wasn't given I wasn't given a reason why
- 8:44Speaker 3: this is happening. Why is this happening? Well, Janisha, I
- 8:48Speaker 3: do feel similar to you just in terms of like,
- 8:50Speaker 3: I'm still confused as why this is happening. Like the initial,
- 8:53Speaker 3: even the initial attraction, I didn't see it was there.
- 8:55Speaker 3: And I understand I'm looking at it through my own lens.
- 8:58Speaker 3: So maybe that's part of the issue of why it's
- 9:00Speaker 3: so hard for me. I can't, I'm not, Jon Stewart,
- 9:04Speaker 3: I'm not a man. I'm not all these other things.
- 9:05Speaker 3: So whatever that guiding thread is, I don't have it.
- 9:09Speaker 3: To answer your question earlier, it's Porna Jaganathan who plays
- 9:12Speaker 3: Zoe Macon, the actress. I think one of the paths
- 9:17Speaker 3: that we did mention like early on was that, you know,
- 9:20Speaker 3: the whole putting the two people of color together. And
- 9:23Speaker 3: then even in the after show, Aaron Pierre said, oh,
- 9:25Speaker 3: there's this one person who understands me. just speaking on
- 9:30Speaker 3: the aspect of the two characters. And I was just like, well,
- 9:32Speaker 3: what do you mean by that?
- 9:33Speaker 4: Right?
- 9:33Speaker 3: Like, cause yeah, she's POC, but she's not black. So
- 9:37Speaker 3: what do you mean by that? So, so it, I
- 9:39Speaker 3: just wanted to jump in and just say, I agree
- 9:40Speaker 3: with you that there is something, there's a major piece missing.
- 9:43Speaker 3: And even if it was less hell, less than five minutes,
- 9:45Speaker 3: even if it was like a 32nd mention or some
- 9:48Speaker 3: type of connecting tissue that would make me believe that
- 9:53Speaker 3: this greater love interest made sense then maybe I wouldn't
- 9:57Speaker 3: feel weird about it to this point. Obviously, after, you know,
- 10:01Speaker 3: getting the space pussy, maybe he... It's some special space
- 10:06Speaker 3: pussy now that we know who Zoe is. Perhaps those effects...
- 10:11Speaker 3: I mean, he's drawing pictures of her and all this shit.
- 10:13Speaker 3: So I don't know about the after effect. But the
- 10:16Speaker 3: before effect, no idea how this occurred. I don't know
- 10:19Speaker 3: if she glamored him. Who knows? And they could have
- 10:21Speaker 3: given her a swaggy line or two. Like, just make her,
- 10:25Speaker 3: just show me. She could look exactly how she looked.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Just show me that she's, like, swagged out. And like, oh,
- 10:32Speaker 3: you know, who would say that? Like, it's not that serious.
- 10:35Speaker 3: But I also, like, for the men here, would y'all
- 10:39Speaker 3: fuck anything? You know? No, no, no, no.
- 10:42Speaker 5: And I really had to push back against that. And
- 10:45Speaker 5: I mean, and I fully agree with you, Janicia, because
- 10:48Speaker 5: I feel like that, the swaggy line is what usually,
- 10:51Speaker 5: you know, in my days of running around was what
- 10:53Speaker 5: got me. You know, it was like, you say some
- 10:55Speaker 5: wild shit out your mouth, I'm like, word.
- 10:57Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 10:57Speaker 5: But like, you know, because it shows you got game,
- 11:00Speaker 5: it shows flavor, all that type of stuff. And it
- 11:02Speaker 5: shows a connection between them. And I felt the same way.
- 11:05Speaker 5: And then when she shows up in this episode, I
- 11:08Speaker 5: really was like, Because for one, like you were talking about,
- 11:12Speaker 5: this dude is like, when that man was standing there
- 11:14Speaker 5: with the gat, you know, and he got the curl on,
- 11:17Speaker 5: this nigga fucking arm is like the size of my head.
- 11:19Speaker 5: And it's like, I'm supposed to believe this dude is just,
- 11:22Speaker 5: like you said, running around desperate?
- 11:24Speaker 3: Nah. He went to art school. He went to art school.
- 11:28Speaker 5: At this point, he's a grown man, so it's not
- 11:30Speaker 5: like I can understand if he was an 18-year-old nerd
- 11:33Speaker 5: or something, but no, no. And then beyond that, it's
- 11:36Speaker 5: like you're in a situation, you're a military man, and
- 11:39Speaker 5: you're in a situation where it's life or death. You're
- 11:41Speaker 5: standing at the window with the gun. You're doing the
- 11:44Speaker 5: Malcolm X, as everybody wants to point out, which I'm like, reaching.
- 11:47Speaker 3: Oh my god is that what we're pulling on is
- 11:49Speaker 3: that what they're doing i miss.
- 11:50Speaker 5: That very loose threads very loose very loose threads i'm
- 11:53Speaker 5: sorry y'all look just because a brother is sitting at
- 11:56Speaker 5: a window is not malcolm x no i mean that
- 11:58Speaker 5: especially i mean you could say it was martin luther
- 12:01Speaker 5: king if you know your history but not malcolm x
- 12:03Speaker 5: but um when he's waiting for some random woman is
- 12:07Speaker 5: what i'm saying but yeah in a hotel.
- 12:10Speaker 4: That is no, no.
- 12:12Speaker 5: It just felt crazy to me because like you just,
- 12:14Speaker 5: it's the, the situation you're in.
- 12:16Speaker 4: It's not time for that.
- 12:17Speaker 5: You know, it felt like they're trying to make the,
- 12:20Speaker 5: you know, odor and drama and, you know, the, you know,
- 12:23Speaker 5: the danger and now they must have sex.
- 12:25Speaker 3: And it just, nah, it was weird. I just wanted
- 12:27Speaker 3: to also add the, the, the fact like Janisha, you
- 12:31Speaker 3: were trying to say that, you know, you're trying to
- 12:32Speaker 3: figure out what it could have been. You know, maybe
- 12:34Speaker 3: he was a nerd. He still had that nerd tendency
- 12:36Speaker 3: that no one liked me in high school type shit.
- 12:38Speaker 3: You know, I watched anime. I, he is objectively fine
- 12:42Speaker 3: as fuck. And beyond, beyond the surface, he is men
- 12:51Speaker 3: and women can say that they, and them can say
- 12:54Speaker 3: that beyond, beyond the surface, the character, the character is
- 13:00Speaker 3: very stubborn, not just stubborn is very, um, sure of himself.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Let's say that. Right. So, um, If nothing else, and
- 13:09Speaker 3: this has been repeated all... This has been repeated over
- 13:11Speaker 3: and over again. It's been repeated by Sinestro. It's been
- 13:13Speaker 3: repeated by Hal himself. And Hal's just talking to the
- 13:16Speaker 3: mirror at that point, pot calling the kettle black. He
- 13:19Speaker 3: knows about himself. He knows he's that nigga, right? So
- 13:22Speaker 3: I am... I don't buy the line or the potential
- 13:26Speaker 3: thought that, oh, you know, it's just like he has
- 13:28Speaker 3: mommy issues and this and that. He knows he can
- 13:30Speaker 3: get whatever he wants. And because he's in the military,
- 13:33Speaker 3: he knows how to use certain tactics. Just like how
- 13:36Speaker 3: Zoe is using tactics against him. He can use the
- 13:39Speaker 3: same tactics, too. He has been trained. And that training
- 13:43Speaker 3: is overwhelming to me. So I'm just like, nah, I
- 13:45Speaker 3: can't because he thinks he's a nerd. It's a missing
- 13:47Speaker 3: piece in the narrative.
- 13:49Speaker 2: I wonder if he.
- 13:52Speaker 1: the same way that how's kicking things around in town
- 13:56Speaker 1: to try to figure out like who's aligned with who
- 14:00Speaker 1: she kind of gave him a window in a town
- 14:03Speaker 1: that's hostile to him and like he went to go
- 14:05Speaker 1: buy a scope and they was tripping and he had
- 14:07Speaker 1: a stack of money um and it's always been like
- 14:11Speaker 1: a person that's kind he's kind of pumping for information
- 14:13Speaker 1: no pun intended um And this episode literally showed that, like,
- 14:19Speaker 1: when they were sitting there, she's giving him inside details
- 14:23Speaker 1: that Hal isn't even getting. So part of me wonders
- 14:26Speaker 1: if it was, like, strategic. Because, yeah, I mean, men
- 14:31Speaker 1: will fuck anything. I think that is, we have enough
- 14:35Speaker 1: history to prove that. Like, the amount of NFL athletes
- 14:39Speaker 1: and shit that look great, but we be on Instagram like, damn.
- 14:42Speaker 2: The same baby.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Mama as him too. So I don't think, like, I don't,
- 14:46Speaker 1: I don't find him being attractive to be any level
- 14:49Speaker 1: of like, well, he would not do it. What I
- 14:51Speaker 1: do find is in that same scene that we're talking
- 14:54Speaker 1: about in the first episode, he wouldn't drink. So he
- 14:58Speaker 1: was like, I'm on duty at the bar, but I
- 15:00Speaker 1: got time to beat cheeks in the car. Like, how
- 15:04Speaker 1: does that, that's the part that didn't make sense to me.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Would they have four more episodes of, But as of
- 15:10Speaker 1: right now, I'm leaning towards, it's the like rated R
- 15:14Speaker 1: HBO true detective of it all.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Like they're doing some stuff on this show.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Cause that's just like, we want to make it like
- 15:21Speaker 1: a true detective and a true detective. Your leads always
- 15:24Speaker 1: have like a moral gray area. Like they're, Oh, there's
- 15:29Speaker 1: a protagonist, but Oh, he's cheating on his wife. Oh,
- 15:32Speaker 1: this guy's on drugs. Like I feel like they're doing
- 15:35Speaker 1: that to, to make it feel more adult. Even the
- 15:38Speaker 1: drawing of dude's dick and the right bend. That just
- 15:41Speaker 1: felt like a true detective. Like, this is so noir.
- 15:44Speaker 4: This is so weird.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Isn't it weird that they're all just acting like this?
- 15:48Speaker 2: Isn't that weird? And so I feel like sometimes they're
- 15:52Speaker 2: taking a lot of liberties with the HBO of it all.
- 15:54Speaker 3: The HBO of it all.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Yeah, it's making it a little less logical, in my opinion,
- 16:00Speaker 1: as far as like getting from point A to Z.
- 16:02Speaker 1: It's like y'all taking a lot of detours just to be.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Like, here's let's get some nudity in here. OK, here's
- 16:07Speaker 2: a little extra, you know. Oh, they fucking y'all. It's like, OK,
- 16:11Speaker 2: that has nothing to do with the plot, though.
- 16:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I like the HBOfication of it, right? And it's unnecessary,
- 16:18Speaker 3: because it's actually a really well-written series so far, and
- 16:22Speaker 3: it doesn't need the roundabout ways. And the word I
- 16:24Speaker 3: was looking for earlier when I was describing Jordan, excuse me, John,
- 16:28Speaker 3: is arrogant. His level of arrogance behooves me not to
- 16:32Speaker 3: believe that it's just, like, he's just doing this because
- 16:35Speaker 3: he feels like this is the way. Like, there's something
- 16:37Speaker 3: else there. And I was... Sorry, go ahead, Portia. I
- 16:41Speaker 3: was just going to say that on the thought of
- 16:42Speaker 3: it being strategic, I was going to say that it
- 16:46Speaker 3: feels like, because like a lot of, he's in the military.
- 16:49Speaker 3: He has been shown his whole life to not fear.
- 16:54Speaker 3: And he shows that he doesn't fear by putting himself
- 16:57Speaker 3: through different challenges. His parents have challenged him to do
- 16:59Speaker 3: different things. And like Rod said, he came to this
- 17:02Speaker 3: small town. He's like looking for an end because he's
- 17:07Speaker 3: going to be like the outsider the whole time. And
- 17:10Speaker 3: here she is presenting him an N, very easy N.
- 17:13Speaker 3: In a way, especially him being a sniper, I feel
- 17:16Speaker 3: like her stepping to him without any game, that's the game.
- 17:20Speaker 3: She was able to pull him with no game. So
- 17:23Speaker 3: he's over here like, in this situation, this lady is
- 17:26Speaker 3: seeing me as prey and she's a predator. I want
- 17:30Speaker 3: to see what she's like as I'm being hunted. Let
- 17:32Speaker 3: me see what the hunter's trying to put me into. Like,
- 17:34Speaker 3: he's like down for the game. Like, this is the game.
- 17:36Speaker 3: So sure, Like, the looks behind things and, like, the
- 17:41Speaker 3: status of, like, having, for better, quote-unquote, pretty privilege or whatever, like,
- 17:47Speaker 3: that does play a role in, like, power dynamics and
- 17:50Speaker 3: relationship and, like, having sex or whatever. But, like... Sure,
- 17:55Speaker 3: people do think with their, like, genitals. That's real. And
- 17:59Speaker 3: that can, again, be, like, the foible that his character
- 18:02Speaker 3: trait that he has. Like, oh, that's his flaws. He
- 18:05Speaker 3: thinks with his pants. He doesn't think too much about it.
- 18:08Speaker 3: If he has the in, he'll take it. Or he's going.
- 18:10Speaker 3: But I think he's specifically going for her because he
- 18:15Speaker 3: feels the setup. She's, like, she's actively... She's around people
- 18:19Speaker 3: she knows. She could be chatting up with anybody. And
- 18:22Speaker 3: she tells him that he's enticing to her because he is, like,
- 18:25Speaker 3: from out of town, basically. And she's playing, like, that angle.
- 18:29Speaker 3: But again, it's like, if you're... He's a sniper. He's
- 18:31Speaker 3: used to what it feels like when somebody sets their
- 18:35Speaker 3: sights on you. And.
- 18:37Speaker 3: There's a reason why he's willing to play along with
- 18:40Speaker 3: it from the beginning. I think it makes a lot
- 18:42Speaker 3: more sense in this episode why he is where he
- 18:45Speaker 3: is and why he allows for her walking up to
- 18:47Speaker 3: the door and him to proceed for them to have
- 18:51Speaker 3: sex or whatever in this episode. But from the beginning,
- 18:55Speaker 3: I think it's one of those, like, let me see
- 18:57Speaker 3: where this is going kind of things. And I think
- 18:59Speaker 3: people have been joking about him being into birds in
- 19:02Speaker 3: that double entendre. And I can kind of see that too. But...
- 19:07Speaker 3: i think sometimes you like the mystery i think sometimes
- 19:10Speaker 3: like okay i may not feel like this person is
- 19:13Speaker 3: like the like oh my god i have to get
- 19:15Speaker 3: down with them right now like but sometimes just go
- 19:18Speaker 3: along with the thing because it's like what else am
- 19:19Speaker 3: i doing like what else was he doing in that
- 19:21Speaker 3: moment it's that's fair but but okay another question was
- 19:26Speaker 3: that the that initial sex scene in the earlier episode
- 19:30Speaker 3: Was it hot?
- 19:32Speaker 2: No. And I thought that was a choice. Okay, tell
- 19:35Speaker 2: me more about that. Because it's not sexy sex.
- 19:37Speaker 3: It's not.
- 19:38Speaker 5: It wasn't.
- 19:38Speaker 1: He was kind of just sitting there. And I was like, yeah,
- 19:41Speaker 1: these are too hot people. And normally when you get
- 19:46Speaker 1: too hot, it's that furious, passionate, like, oh my God,
- 19:48Speaker 1: they couldn't keep their.
- 19:49Speaker 3: Hands off me.
- 19:50Speaker 2: It wasn't really sexy sex dog.
- 19:52Speaker 1: And, and then even in this scene this week, they
- 19:55Speaker 1: didn't really show a lot of the sex stuff.
- 19:57Speaker 2: It got a little hotter, but.
- 19:58Speaker 1: It wasn't like, I don't know, like, I've seen True Detective,
- 20:02Speaker 1: when they want to go there, they absolutely fucking go there.
- 20:06Speaker 2: And they're not going there like that in this show.
- 20:08Speaker 1: Could be maybe DC don't want their characters doing that,
- 20:10Speaker 1: but I just don't.
- 20:11Speaker 2: I doubt that.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess that's what I'm wondering. What is the
- 20:14Speaker 3: reason for that choice? Because, okay, all of that and
- 20:19Speaker 3: everything Portia said is very... That actually makes a lot
- 20:22Speaker 3: of sense. But there are some choices being made here
- 20:26Speaker 3: that are weird. You know what I mean? That are weird...
- 20:30Speaker 3: and are not steering me as someone who looks through,
- 20:34Speaker 3: you know, a discerning eye that exists in the world
- 20:37Speaker 3: as a Black person. It just looks.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Do you watch True Detective?
- 20:43Speaker 3: I don't watch True Detective. I hear what you're saying,
- 20:45Speaker 3: but I'm trying to understand what would the choice be.
- 20:47Speaker 1: It's literally just, I watch True Detective and they do
- 20:50Speaker 1: a lot of weird shit on there to be weird.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Oh, to be weird.
- 20:54Speaker 2: The gold. Just the same people.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Some shit at the end of True Detective doesn't narratively
- 21:02Speaker 1: get wrapped up because they just be like.
- 21:05Speaker 3: Wasn't that weird? I'm not big into that to be honest,
- 21:08Speaker 3: but Some of this feels like that.
- 21:11Speaker 1: They do have four episodes to make these things matter more,
- 21:16Speaker 1: but I'm, I'm wondering if some of these things won't
- 21:18Speaker 1: matter to the plot as much because they're like, what?
- 21:21Speaker 1: That was just like a cool scene. Remember when you
- 21:23Speaker 1: like fucked her in the car? I'm like, yeah, I
- 21:25Speaker 1: don't know, bro.
- 21:27Speaker 5: I want to, I want to say something on that
- 21:29Speaker 5: because a couple of things that one J you said
- 21:32Speaker 5: you were talking about the humiliation ritual, which is, Interesting,
- 21:37Speaker 5: but then when you take this episode, that's what I
- 21:39Speaker 5: would consider a real humiliation ritual for Aaron Pierre if,
- 21:43Speaker 5: you know, such a thing exists is when he has
- 21:46Speaker 5: to sit there and draw a picture of a white
- 21:47Speaker 5: man's dick. And, like, my first thought of that was
- 21:50Speaker 5: just egregious. Like, I didn't get the point. And it
- 21:54Speaker 5: was silly to a point because it's like, This dude
- 21:57Speaker 5: is standing there with his dick out. None of his
- 21:59Speaker 5: dudes react. He's like, oh, what type of art supplies
- 22:01Speaker 5: do we need? We just got them all over there.
- 22:02Speaker 5: We got oil paints. We got finger paints.
- 22:04Speaker 3: Oh, charcoal.
- 22:05Speaker 4: Here you go.
- 22:05Speaker 5: We got that, fam. Like, this is a regular occurrence.
- 22:08Speaker 5: This man takes his shirt off and has people, you know,
- 22:10Speaker 5: do art portraits of him. Like, it's... That's what I'm saying.
- 22:13Speaker 5: It felt silly if that's the case. And other than that,
- 22:16Speaker 5: it feels like, you know, they're trying to establish the
- 22:18Speaker 5: power dynamics. But that's such a silly way of doing
- 22:21Speaker 5: it again because... Yeah, it just felt like... And that's
- 22:25Speaker 5: something I don't feel like it should be touched again.
- 22:26Speaker 5: That felt like Tarantino-esque, where it's like they bring the
- 22:29Speaker 5: gimp out type thing, you know?
- 22:30Speaker 4: And it's just like, what in the fuck?
- 22:32Speaker 3: You know, what is this about?
- 22:33Speaker 4: And then, you know, move on and never really mention
- 22:35Speaker 4: it again. So that's... Yeah.
- 22:37Speaker 3: I mean, I... Go ahead. Sorry.
- 22:39Speaker 4: Unnecessary.
- 22:39Speaker 3: I just want to tap on the humiliation ritual again.
- 22:41Speaker 3: Because honestly, when I saw... It was... I don't know
- 22:44Speaker 3: if y'all know Bill Johnson. He's a cosplayer in New York.
- 22:47Speaker 3: But like... And an actor. But... When I first saw that,
- 22:51Speaker 3: I was like, this again? Humiliation ritual? Come on. And
- 22:56Speaker 3: not because I don't believe that people do weird and
- 22:58Speaker 3: evil things, but I believe that it's so not unintentional,
- 23:03Speaker 3: but just passive. This is just how we exist and
- 23:05Speaker 3: this is just how we treat those people. And it's
- 23:07Speaker 3: fucking humiliating, right? But I think that your point about
- 23:12Speaker 3: To this episode's humiliation ritual of, oh, here, draw this guy.
- 23:16Speaker 3: His dick is out for no fucking reason. That's weird.
- 23:18Speaker 3: I think it builds the case for this. So, you
- 23:22Speaker 3: know what I mean? I think it makes it like, oh, shit. Oh,
- 23:24Speaker 3: that is kind of what's going on. And it doesn't
- 23:26Speaker 3: humiliation ritual. It doesn't have to be like. this sinister
- 23:31Speaker 3: group of white men deciding here are the three humiliation
- 23:34Speaker 3: rituals we're going to put in. But that type of
- 23:36Speaker 3: behavior is so built within the constructs of how we
- 23:40Speaker 3: treat one another in this society. And by one another,
- 23:42Speaker 3: I mean, how a toxic white society treats everyone else,
- 23:46Speaker 3: it's woven in that, you know, people are like, oh,
- 23:49Speaker 3: this will be cool, this will work, this will whatever,
- 23:51Speaker 3: because that's just how we treat these people. And it's humiliating.
- 23:54Speaker 3: This is interesting towards both of you saying, really what
- 23:58Speaker 3: everybody has been saying. Geeta Vasant Patel, who directed this
- 24:01Speaker 3: episode at the after show, she said that The whole
- 24:06Speaker 3: naked Marlboro Man scene was because that was to show
- 24:10Speaker 3: a display of power, you know, to show that Macon
- 24:14Speaker 3: doesn't really care about none of this shit. You know,
- 24:16Speaker 3: he he knows all and he don't give a fuck. Right.
- 24:20Speaker 3: But it goes back to what Rob was saying was like,
- 24:22Speaker 3: did it have to be like that? And could it
- 24:25Speaker 3: have been expressed any other way besides just doing that?
- 24:28Speaker 3: Like I felt a level of being like, even though
- 24:31Speaker 3: it's clear, like the workers or his people, his henchmen
- 24:35Speaker 3: are not reacting. It's still weird to them. Everyone in
- 24:37Speaker 3: the room is feeling a type of way. The only
- 24:39Speaker 3: person who's like physically reacting is how he's like, he's like,
- 24:43Speaker 3: what the fuck bro? Like, so, um, I, I.
- 24:46Speaker 5: Know Rod, you know, you've worked in rooms and I
- 24:49Speaker 5: had one, you know, major experience working in a room
- 24:52Speaker 5: on American Gods. And there was moments in there with,
- 24:56Speaker 5: you know, a room full of, all the writers of
- 25:00Speaker 5: color were staff writers. All the executives were white. And
- 25:04Speaker 5: there was a lot, or not a lot, but a
- 25:07Speaker 5: few times where well-meaning, left-leaning, liberal-type white men would come
- 25:12Speaker 5: in with storylines that were wildly disturbing to me as
- 25:17Speaker 5: a person of color, as a black man. And I
- 25:21Speaker 5: argued all day against them. And the blind spot of
- 25:25Speaker 5: them not being able to see how offensive this fucking was...
- 25:29Speaker 5: It's so I've told Tatiana the story, but I won't
- 25:32Speaker 5: repeat it on air right now because it is so
- 25:35Speaker 5: wildly outrageous.
- 25:37Speaker 4: Like and I'm sitting in this room for eight hours.
- 25:40Speaker 5: A day being like, yo, this is, you know, not
- 25:43Speaker 5: a good look, y'all. And being overvoted every time and
- 25:47Speaker 5: then be like, oh, well, it's cool.
- 25:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:50Speaker 1: Luckily for me on Game Theory, Bomani's black and then
- 25:55Speaker 1: James is black. And so they had enough power at
- 25:58Speaker 1: the top to put a kibosh on pretty much anything
- 26:02Speaker 1: that was that fucked up. But it's weird to me
- 26:07Speaker 1: because what I think, if there's a, I don't want
- 26:11Speaker 1: to say a mistake, they have four episodes to go.
- 26:13Speaker 2: And I like the series a lot, to be honest.
- 26:15Speaker 1: But if anything was a detour, I think it's episode
- 26:20Speaker 1: three being so black. if the if the rest of
- 26:23Speaker 1: the series isn't considering the black lens of episode three
- 26:29Speaker 1: it's hard to go back to just like and now
- 26:32Speaker 1: white man has his dick out without being like hey
- 26:35Speaker 1: is this a commentary of some type because you know
- 26:38Speaker 1: there's another layer way to look at it or that
- 26:41Speaker 1: is oh, they're making a commentary on whiteness. This white
- 26:45Speaker 1: man is so unthreatening and arrogant, too, in his own way.
- 26:49Speaker 1: He wants this dude to draw his dick. He wants
- 26:52Speaker 1: his brown wife to watch. There's commentaries there in reading
- 26:58Speaker 1: it that could be them saying to us, the audience, no,
- 27:01Speaker 1: we see it.
- 27:02Speaker 2: You should be uncomfortable.
- 27:03Speaker 1: We didn't like the show of eight episodes of comfort
- 27:06Speaker 1: for anyone. We wrote a show of y'all should be
- 27:10Speaker 1: skeeved out and weirded out by these motherfuckers. What, what,
- 27:13Speaker 1: what the part that was weird to me in that
- 27:15Speaker 1: scene is like, you just shot Hal and put him
- 27:17Speaker 1: in a hospital last week.
- 27:19Speaker 2: Now you just beat these niggas up. You got super.
- 27:23Speaker 1: Space weapons and shit that, that somehow fucking, they couldn't
- 27:27Speaker 1: even use the ring to fight back and all this.
- 27:30Speaker 2: You just, yay.
- 27:31Speaker 3: Like they wake up, And I'm like, so is they
- 27:34Speaker 3: about to kill him? And they like, nah, draw my dick, bro.
- 27:38Speaker 1: And I'm just sitting the ring on the, I'm just
- 27:40Speaker 1: going to sit the ring on the desk. Like, I
- 27:42Speaker 1: just don't understand the motivations for that character.
- 27:46Speaker 2: And for me, him being a white man is not accomplishing.
- 27:49Speaker 1: It's not all encompassing enough that I'm like, It's just
- 27:52Speaker 1: how white men are.
- 27:53Speaker 3: They do shit like this all the time. Like, no,
- 27:55Speaker 3: this was weird even for a white man.
- 27:57Speaker 2: How was a white man? I was like, what the
- 27:59Speaker 2: fuck is you.
- 27:59Speaker 3: Doing, bro? So, like, for me, I think the reveal
- 28:03Speaker 3: of the episode is what puts it into context and
- 28:06Speaker 3: a greater context because we know now that Zoe is
- 28:10Speaker 3: actually the real one with power in this room. She's
- 28:13Speaker 3: the Manhunter. Is she though? Okay, but let's put it
- 28:17Speaker 3: from there.
- 28:17Speaker 2: That's the allegations.
- 28:19Speaker 3: But in the after show, they confirmed.
- 28:21Speaker 4: Okay, they did.
- 28:22Speaker 2: Okay, I didn't watch the after show.
- 28:23Speaker 4: I don't believe that shit.
- 28:25Speaker 3: We're using the lens that Zoe is the lioness.
- 28:28Speaker 2: They could lie, that's true.
- 28:30Speaker 3: I've been feeling everything is a lie in this show.
- 28:31Speaker 4: Yes, and that's the theme of the episode.
- 28:33Speaker 3: Everyone's lying. Everybody's lying. Everything's a lie. But if Zoe
- 28:38Speaker 3: is the actual person with power in this room, and
- 28:42Speaker 3: your question is, okay, we're doing all of this for what?
- 28:46Speaker 3: For the white man's ego? It is kind of for
- 28:48Speaker 3: the white man's ego because it's like, she's telling him,
- 28:52Speaker 3: you be the representative of my power in this territory.
- 28:57Speaker 3: I don't want to be involved with the maintenance of
- 29:01Speaker 3: making sure that I'm safe. You do all of that.
- 29:03Speaker 3: You make sure they take care of the enforcement. You
- 29:05Speaker 3: use your white power to make sure that I don't
- 29:07Speaker 3: have to deal with any of this unnecessary bullshit. I'm
- 29:10Speaker 3: going to create a whole separate slaughterhouse system and make
- 29:14Speaker 3: a freaking decoy so that I don't deal with anybody
- 29:17Speaker 3: coming to near me on that range either. I'm just
- 29:19Speaker 3: going to show up and do what I want to
- 29:21Speaker 3: do whenever I feel like doing it. So I had
- 29:23Speaker 3: sex with the first brown man that's come to this
- 29:26Speaker 3: community in decades. Guess what? And you're going to deal
- 29:29Speaker 3: with it. And he has to deal with it, but
- 29:30Speaker 3: he's like, okay, yeah, I'll deal with it. But also
- 29:32Speaker 3: I'm gonna make him draw my dick and like this
- 29:34Speaker 3: is like so he was showing out i bet i
- 29:37Speaker 3: could now that i can understand pettiness is a very
- 29:40Speaker 3: human human trait so i.
- 29:41Speaker 1: Was because i was like when you first started i
- 29:44Speaker 1: was like is this implying they had a conversation at
- 29:46Speaker 1: some point where she was like yeah then make them
- 29:48Speaker 1: draw your dick okay i'm in charge but you see
- 29:50Speaker 1: i'm gonna act like i want to leave bring me
- 29:52Speaker 1: back in the room yeah okay.
- 29:56Speaker 3: Remember when we were always, well, I had said that,
- 29:58Speaker 3: you know, do they have some type of arrangement or whatever?
- 30:00Speaker 3: And it was explained like, Zoe had explained that to John. Like,
- 30:06Speaker 3: you know, yeah, we're together, but, you know, we kind
- 30:09Speaker 3: of do what we want to do. So that is
- 30:11Speaker 3: a level of pettiness there. Like, I always feel like
- 30:13Speaker 3: when people say they have those arrangements, they don't. There's
- 30:15Speaker 3: always somebody who doesn't fully accept it for whatever reasons, right?
- 30:17Speaker 3: And racism could be a reason why you don't really
- 30:20Speaker 3: fully accept it. It could be anything, right? Ego, all
- 30:23Speaker 3: of that shit. She didn't let them watch.
- 30:25Speaker 2: You know, they like that.
- 30:27Speaker 3: There you go. So I just feel like thinking about
- 30:30Speaker 3: it from that lens, one of my notes is I
- 30:32Speaker 3: think the episode being called The Weenie is very apropos
- 30:35Speaker 3: because I feel like this is that weenie of an episode.
- 30:37Speaker 3: It's probably my least favorite episode of the season so far.
- 30:40Speaker 3: It did nothing for.
- 30:41Speaker 2: Me, really.
- 30:42Speaker 3: I was just like, okay, like narratively, I guess we
- 30:44Speaker 3: get a couple of new points, but I just continue
- 30:47Speaker 3: to feel as if everyone here is lying. Like, I
- 30:49Speaker 3: don't really feel like it gave me too much this episode,
- 30:51Speaker 3: especially after how much I enjoyed the last episode. Two,
- 30:56Speaker 3: I just want to note that Hal being uncomfortable and
- 31:00Speaker 3: actually noting that he'd been on a planet full of
- 31:02Speaker 3: tentacles before, which if you read enough Smut or know
- 31:06Speaker 3: enough about Smut romance and stuff, you know that... A
- 31:11Speaker 3: tentacle planet is basically a planet of penises. Like, that's just...
- 31:14Speaker 3: All it is is wingies. Yes. Clinging all the time.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Doing things.
- 31:17Speaker 3: So, for Hal to be like, I'm more disturbed by
- 31:20Speaker 3: another white man's penis than I am about a tentacle planet. Like,
- 31:23Speaker 3: that is... Like, that was weird to me even more. Well,
- 31:26Speaker 3: I think he.
- 31:29Speaker 1: One, if we had a flashback, Hal was probably just
- 31:32Speaker 1: as disturbed by those tentacles.
- 31:33Speaker 2: He'd be over the top with the way he'd be talking.
- 31:36Speaker 3: Yes.
- 31:36Speaker 1: There's no way he was on that planet and cool
- 31:38Speaker 1: with them.
- 31:40Speaker 3: No, he wasn't. He wasn't.
- 31:41Speaker 2: He was saying wild shit then. Right, right, right. But
- 31:45Speaker 2: I think he was just trying to point out the weirdness.
- 31:47Speaker 3: All the slurs coming out. Correct. He was using hyperbole.
- 31:52Speaker 2: Yeah, because I 100% expected him to wake up tied
- 31:54Speaker 2: up or something. I did not, like... I mean, once again,
- 31:58Speaker 2: it could be the true detective of it all.
- 32:00Speaker 1: That was weird. It's like, oh, the response you're expecting.
- 32:03Speaker 1: Our heroes wake up. They're in peril. No, they wake up.
- 32:07Speaker 1: They need to draw a dick. And then the sheriff
- 32:10Speaker 1: can walk them out with the ring. And everybody's going
- 32:14Speaker 1: to be cool with it. A week after they put.
- 32:16Speaker 3: This thing in the hospital. It's just kind of like,
- 32:20Speaker 3: that's the reaction. Last week, it was like, don't step
- 32:22Speaker 3: on my land. Blow.
- 32:24Speaker 2: This week is like, go and take your ring.
- 32:25Speaker 3: Get out of here, man. Right. Because she's in power.
- 32:28Speaker 3: It's because Zoe actually has the power behind it all.
- 32:30Speaker 3: Like he was able to get away with doing the
- 32:33Speaker 3: pop shot, but he, she, whenever it came down to
- 32:35Speaker 3: the call of like, what are we actually going to
- 32:37Speaker 3: do with these two people once we capture them? And
- 32:40Speaker 3: she's like, let them go. He's like, well, I'm not
- 32:42Speaker 3: going to let them go without being weird first. Yeah,
- 32:45Speaker 3: I think here's the thing. What I was thinking from
- 32:47Speaker 3: the beginning that the plan of tunneling in was implausible
- 32:51Speaker 3: to begin with, not because you can't obviously you can
- 32:53Speaker 3: construct anything with the ring, but because I knew what
- 32:56Speaker 3: it was when y'all signed up, like y'all knew this
- 32:58Speaker 3: is a place where they have special technology or you
- 33:01Speaker 3: posited that they had some special technology. You've seen wild
- 33:03Speaker 3: shit happen. You've seen. fucking things come down from space already.
- 33:07Speaker 3: And then you said, you know what, we're going to
- 33:09Speaker 3: tunnel in. There's no way that they would notice. I
- 33:11Speaker 3: just feel like it was, you wouldn't think that they
- 33:14Speaker 3: had thought of everything like tunneling and tunneling is not
- 33:17Speaker 3: a quiet act. Like maybe if you get low enough, maybe,
- 33:20Speaker 3: but like, you know how they made the tunnel to
- 33:22Speaker 3: go between New York and Holland tunnel. That's not quiet.
- 33:24Speaker 3: It's very loud. Right. And, I just didn't understand how
- 33:28Speaker 3: that was supposed to work. And then you get away
- 33:30Speaker 3: with it. It's kind of like a Looney Tunes thing almost.
- 33:33Speaker 3: And that's what bothered me about it. It was very
- 33:35Speaker 3: kind of coyote, roadrunner type thing. Like, oh, I'm going
- 33:37Speaker 3: to tunnel under you and then pop up. And, you know,
- 33:40Speaker 3: I'm going to surprise you. Like, as if they wouldn't know.
- 33:43Speaker 4: It just.
- 33:45Speaker 3: And the whole thing, the MacGuffin of stepping on the,
- 33:47Speaker 3: you know, the secret trap door, like to set off
- 33:50Speaker 3: the alarms. I was like, all right, whatever. But I,
- 33:53Speaker 3: I don't know. It just, it was something off about it.
- 33:56Speaker 3: And I kind of keep gravitating towards Rod saying about like,
- 33:59Speaker 3: just throwing weird shit in for the sake of it. Yeah.
- 34:01Speaker 2: It's just, yeah.
- 34:03Speaker 1: I mean, I loved a lot about this episode to
- 34:05Speaker 1: be honest, but these, these were not the things I loved.
- 34:08Speaker 2: Like I was like, this is weird.
- 34:10Speaker 3: Y'all got four episodes to make this make sense.
- 34:12Speaker 1: Cause like, You know, I try not to judge a
- 34:15Speaker 1: show on some like this doesn't make sense in the moment,
- 34:17Speaker 1: especially a mystery, a true detective mystery. It's almost futile
- 34:21Speaker 1: to be like, oh, this doesn't make sense.
- 34:23Speaker 2: It's not supposed to.
- 34:24Speaker 3: It's literally supposed we doing exactly what we supposed to
- 34:28Speaker 3: be doing right here. Yeah.
- 34:29Speaker 2: What does that mean? What does that mean?
- 34:31Speaker 1: That's exactly what the show is and hopefully if we
- 34:34Speaker 1: get to the end we will have gotten some answers
- 34:36Speaker 1: satisfactory or not this is what this all meant this
- 34:39Speaker 1: whole time but the speculation is the best part right
- 34:43Speaker 1: this week the week between episodes of yeah what was
- 34:46Speaker 1: that shit so I'm with y'all on that but there's
- 34:49Speaker 1: other stuff in this that I thought they did well
- 34:52Speaker 1: that or at least to me that was like what
- 34:55Speaker 1: I thought the show would be talk about that Rod
- 34:58Speaker 1: I love Sinestro and Hal talking That shit was like
- 35:03Speaker 1: as a cold open of just 10 minutes of two
- 35:05Speaker 1: niggas talking to each other.
- 35:07Speaker 2: I was glued to my fuck. I was leaned up.
- 35:10Speaker 3: I was like, what's going on with this?
- 35:13Speaker 1: And I think there's this theme that's happening. And the
- 35:18Speaker 1: last episode included like of obedience being like John, like John,
- 35:24Speaker 1: like John need to learn.
- 35:26Speaker 2: Like John, I think we as black people rooting for John.
- 35:29Speaker 2: He black.
- 35:30Speaker 1: Also there's like john ain't really him yet because john
- 35:33Speaker 1: is not comfortable really bucking authority he did it a
- 35:36Speaker 1: little bit this week and i was like okay so
- 35:38Speaker 1: you not just gonna just do everything these motherfuckers say
- 35:42Speaker 1: without questioning because they asked him to do some dirty
- 35:45Speaker 1: shit this week and the way they've been writing that
- 35:48Speaker 1: character i was like is he gonna just take the
- 35:50Speaker 1: ring from how because i mean that's what they told
- 35:52Speaker 1: him to do he don't feel a way about that's
- 35:55Speaker 1: kind of like for them to be so righteous He
- 35:57Speaker 1: don't feel like a way about, like, we giving you
- 36:01Speaker 1: a class and you supposed to have graduated to the ring,
- 36:03Speaker 1: but you.
- 36:04Speaker 2: Just take the shit.
- 36:05Speaker 4: Fuck it.
- 36:05Speaker 2: Like, I appreciated that he questioned that.
- 36:09Speaker 1: And simultaneously, I appreciate Hal's questioning Sinestro as well. Like, Sinestro,
- 36:16Speaker 1: I was like, y'all are too chummy for me to
- 36:20Speaker 1: feel like what Sinestro did was all the way wrong.
- 36:23Speaker 1: Whatever he did. I feel like he had a point
- 36:26Speaker 1: and he just went too far. Cause that's how they
- 36:29Speaker 1: was talking. Like he wasn't talking like, man, fuck you, dude.
- 36:32Speaker 1: You know what you, he was talking like, You see
- 36:34Speaker 1: what I'm saying, player? They got Jon Stewart on your
- 36:37Speaker 1: ass now, don't they?
- 36:38Speaker 2: How do you know about that? Oh, I know, nigga.
- 36:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I trained you.
- 36:42Speaker 2: I know you. Do what I did.
- 36:44Speaker 1: And I was like, oh, and then I thought Hal
- 36:46Speaker 1: was going to basically do what Sinestro put him up to,
- 36:50Speaker 1: but Hal was still being a dick to Jon when
- 36:52Speaker 1: he got back, so I was like, maybe he don't
- 36:55Speaker 1: got it all the way in him.
- 36:56Speaker 2: But anyway, I enjoyed the intrigue of that.
- 36:58Speaker 1: I thought they nailed that, and I'm in it for
- 37:01Speaker 1: that kind of stuff, because the Lantern lore.
- 37:04Speaker 3: is fascinating.
- 37:05Speaker 1: And in a grounded series like this, sometimes they almost
- 37:08Speaker 1: have disdain for that kind of like spacefaring, the politics
- 37:12Speaker 1: of the Guardians and all that.
- 37:13Speaker 2: I was like, don't give me just a hick town, bro.
- 37:17Speaker 2: I need all that shit. And I felt like we
- 37:19Speaker 2: got more.
- 37:20Speaker 5: No, I think we're going to get more on that.
- 37:22Speaker 5: Just real quick, one thing I just wanted to add
- 37:24Speaker 5: on that was the line Sinestro says when he says,
- 37:27Speaker 5: I was never anything but myself. I felt like that
- 37:29Speaker 5: was one of the most important lines.
- 37:30Speaker 3: Of the episode. Mm-hmm.
- 37:31Speaker 5: Because he's probably the only person in this episode who
- 37:34Speaker 5: is never anything but himself.
- 37:36Speaker 4: Everyone else, I feel like.
- 37:38Speaker 5: Yeah, the other line was when Hal's talking to John
- 37:42Speaker 5: and he's like, who does that remind you of? And
- 37:44Speaker 5: John gives the most, like, Aaron Pierre is fucking acting
- 37:47Speaker 5: his ass off. In my quick review, I compared him
- 37:50Speaker 5: to Wonder Man when Yaya would give these performances when
- 37:54Speaker 5: he's a fantastic actor. And then in another scene, he's
- 37:57Speaker 5: a terrible actor. And it's, like, the ability to be
- 37:59Speaker 5: able to do both of those.
- 38:01Speaker 3: And when he's like, you know, I guess it was making.
- 38:03Speaker 3: I'm like, damn, nigga, you can't lie better than that.
- 38:06Speaker 5: Like, that was fucking terrible.
- 38:07Speaker 3: Even Howard was like, damn, you even tried a lot.
- 38:09Speaker 3: You even tried, nigga.
- 38:12Speaker 1: And, like, the reveal that how, like, as brash as
- 38:15Speaker 1: he is and all the, you know, negativity that comes
- 38:18Speaker 1: from that, The reveal that hell is not some bumbling
- 38:21Speaker 1: fucking idiot.
- 38:22Speaker 3: It's important. Like the fact that he was reading John
- 38:25Speaker 3: the whole time to like, yeah, bro, I just want
- 38:27Speaker 3: to see if you was going to lie to me.
- 38:29Speaker 2: And you did, bro.
- 38:30Speaker 3: I'm not fucking dumb just because I be doing dumb shit.
- 38:33Speaker 2: Them dumb things is on purpose, my nigga. He's essentially
- 38:37Speaker 2: like that old.
- 38:38Speaker 1: Nigga that work at your job who just tired of
- 38:41Speaker 1: the steps, right? Like, where it's like, you know, you
- 38:43Speaker 1: got to send a report and triplicate. And he's like,
- 38:45Speaker 1: here's a report.
- 38:46Speaker 3: Damn.
- 38:46Speaker 4: What's the nigga from The Wire who worked in the
- 38:48Speaker 4: basement who made the little house? Yes, yes.
- 38:50Speaker 3: That's Hal. Yeah, he's just like, we can skip all
- 38:53Speaker 3: the fucking conference calls, man.
- 38:54Speaker 2: Just get to the shit.
- 38:56Speaker 1: And that, Hal does a lot of just kick down
- 38:58Speaker 1: the door as get to the shit.
- 39:01Speaker 3: Get to the point. Yeah, but he's not dumb. No,
- 39:04Speaker 3: he's never been dumb. And we've communicated that, that Hal's
- 39:07Speaker 3: not stupid. I've given the analogy of the drunken master
- 39:10Speaker 3: stance where it's just like, You act like you're not
- 39:13Speaker 3: all the way there, but you are more lucid and
- 39:15Speaker 3: more aware than everybody in the room. Right. And beyond.
- 39:18Speaker 3: So that's what Hal has always given me. And I
- 39:20Speaker 3: wanted to address something you said, Rod, starting backwards, particularly
- 39:24Speaker 3: about John and his response or his reaction or non-reaction
- 39:27Speaker 3: to his order of taking the ring. He smooth pissed
- 39:31Speaker 3: me off. Like, smooth pissed me off. I don't know,
- 39:33Speaker 3: as a black person or as a future villain when
- 39:36Speaker 3: I get my powers, why would you not take the chance?
- 39:41Speaker 3: Why did you not... This is the same thing he
- 39:44Speaker 3: did with the Gray Wolf situation. He had maybe two
- 39:47Speaker 3: opportunities to take that nigga out and didn't take it.
- 39:50Speaker 3: He hesitated for whatever reason. And he did the same
- 39:53Speaker 3: thing again. Ben, what you about to say?
- 39:56Speaker 5: Yeah, I definitely... get back to Janice. I know you
- 39:59Speaker 5: had another major point, but that's the thing.
- 40:01Speaker 3: Okay.
- 40:02Speaker 5: And this is something I have to address because it's
- 40:03Speaker 5: been coming up a lot in the comments. Like people
- 40:05Speaker 5: have been like, John is a sucker. He's a military man.
- 40:09Speaker 5: His family is suckers. They believe this guardian, John does
- 40:12Speaker 5: whatever he wants y'all. I mean, we actually got called,
- 40:15Speaker 5: you know, like military, uh, I guess.
- 40:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 40:20Speaker 4: You know, because we didn't disagree with John.
- 40:22Speaker 5: And I had to point out, john has disobeyed not
- 40:24Speaker 5: only the guardians but how and everyone like in the
- 40:28Speaker 5: flashback okay we see john take the mission without question
- 40:32Speaker 5: but when he gets there he does not shoot the
- 40:34Speaker 5: dude because he's questioning and then after that he has
- 40:38Speaker 5: been disobeying everyone ever since that mission like he doesn't
- 40:42Speaker 5: he obeyed a military anymore he damn sure ignored the
- 40:45Speaker 5: guardians and In the first episode, he's not reporting back
- 40:48Speaker 5: to them. When Hal tells him don't go down to
- 40:50Speaker 5: the football field, he immediately goes down. And in this episode, he,
- 40:54Speaker 5: I mean, straight up disobeys the Guardians. And it's not
- 40:57Speaker 5: because he doesn't want the power, because he doesn't trust them.
- 41:00Speaker 5: Everyone is fucking lying to him.
- 41:02Speaker 4: He says it.
- 41:03Speaker 5: Everyone is lying to me. I know this Guardian is
- 41:06Speaker 5: lying to me. So if I just go by what
- 41:08Speaker 5: she's saying, what's going to happen? No, I can't do that.
- 41:11Speaker 5: I do trust Hal a little bit more than I
- 41:13Speaker 5: trust the Guardians. So, I'm going to go with Hal
- 41:16Speaker 5: over them right now. But he knows everyone's lying. That's
- 41:19Speaker 5: why he didn't do it. So, it's a calculated decision.
- 41:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:22Speaker 5: Not because he don't want the ring, but because he
- 41:24Speaker 5: knows that this ain't the way to the ring. Like,
- 41:26Speaker 5: Rob said, this ain't the way you go and recite
- 41:29Speaker 5: the oath after you take it off.
- 41:30Speaker 4: No, niggas die and get the ring off.
- 41:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:32Speaker 4: That was shady as fuck, bro.
- 41:34Speaker 2: Like, I thought he was going to do it for
- 41:36Speaker 2: a second.
- 41:37Speaker 3: I was really.
- 41:38Speaker 2: I was really going to judge the shit out of.
- 41:39Speaker 3: This nigga if he would have been like, I was like,
- 41:43Speaker 3: what the fuck are you doing? That's not how you.
- 41:45Speaker 2: Get the ring.
- 41:45Speaker 3: You know it.
- 41:46Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 41:49Speaker 3: No, of course, yeah. I was over here like, do it.
- 41:52Speaker 3: Whisper it.
- 41:52Speaker 2: I was like, do it. I'm whispering right now what
- 41:54Speaker 2: you're doing.
- 41:55Speaker 3: Whisper it. It's yours. Enough. And let me be clear,
- 41:58Speaker 3: I didn't think he was a sucker. None of that shit.
- 42:00Speaker 3: I didn't think none of that. So I agree with
- 42:02Speaker 3: you on that, Ben. I was more on the wave
- 42:04Speaker 3: of Genesia. Just, you know, I'm chaotic like that. I'm like,
- 42:06Speaker 3: just fucking do it. Just try it and see what
- 42:08Speaker 3: the fuck happens. Y'all niggas been lying. What's another fucking lie?
- 42:11Speaker 3: Y'all niggas don't trust each other.
- 42:13Speaker 1: How do y'all think y'all would have felt about him
- 42:15Speaker 1: as a protagonist if he would have did it? Because
- 42:19Speaker 1: I'm imagining the scene in my head of him rushing
- 42:21Speaker 1: through that.
- 42:22Speaker 2: That thing it didn't have it like give me.
- 42:24Speaker 3: The ring back it's like it's my ring like I'm
- 42:28Speaker 3: like damn am I rooting for this or am I
- 42:30Speaker 3: like yo you got a shady nigga now but my
- 42:33Speaker 3: thing is that the theme of the episode just being
- 42:35Speaker 3: everybody's a liar including John Like, he's two-faced, too. The
- 42:40Speaker 3: way he talks, and that was so funny when that
- 42:43Speaker 3: engineer played the playback of the conversation with Linnea, or Liana, sorry.
- 42:50Speaker 3: He was like, oh, that nigga old, and, you know,
- 42:52Speaker 3: he washed, right? Like, just speaking on him dirty, and
- 42:56Speaker 3: then the next minute, you know, when he's hearing the playback,
- 42:57Speaker 3: he was like, ah, shit, I'm sorry I said that. Like, he, like... Like,
- 43:01Speaker 3: he's playing the role. He's playing both sides of the situation.
- 43:04Speaker 2: All lies aren't equal, though, right?
- 43:06Speaker 1: Like, so, like, there's certain lies you keep where I'm like, oh,
- 43:09Speaker 1: you a bad person. There's certain, like, if you're trying
- 43:11Speaker 1: to protect your family. Spider-Man lies all the time, right?
- 43:14Speaker 1: He's like, oh, no, nigga, I'm not Peter Parker. And
- 43:16Speaker 1: you're like, okay, you doing that because you love people.
- 43:18Speaker 1: But if you lie like, I just want this ring
- 43:21Speaker 1: and I'm just, whatever I got to do to get
- 43:23Speaker 1: the ring, I'm going to just do it.
- 43:25Speaker 2: I just wonder if we'd.
- 43:26Speaker 3: Be able to hold in another reality where they wrote
- 43:29Speaker 3: that scene.
- 43:30Speaker 2: Are we here on Monday like, yo, John.
- 43:33Speaker 3: Got a wild boy. Yeah, I think that I would
- 43:35Speaker 3: be okay with it because this show has been really
- 43:40Speaker 3: good with showing the... I guess duality is a weird word,
- 43:46Speaker 3: but people be racist, right? Hal is likable. He's smart.
- 43:52Speaker 3: He's fun. I'd have a beer with him. Well, not
- 43:54Speaker 3: knowing that I know he's racist, but you know, easy
- 43:57Speaker 3: to have a beer with or whatever. He also says
- 44:01Speaker 3: racist stuff, does racist stuff. You know what I'm saying?
- 44:04Speaker 3: And so knowing that, right, knowing that, I would have
- 44:09Speaker 3: been okay with him taking the ring. You know, he's
- 44:11Speaker 3: the racist coworker who nobody knows is microaggressing all day
- 44:16Speaker 3: in every situation. And so it's really hard to translate
- 44:19Speaker 3: that to other people. People like, well, what happened? But
- 44:22Speaker 3: what do they do? What do you mean? You know
- 44:24Speaker 3: what I'm saying? But you're living with this person who,
- 44:27Speaker 3: microaggressing at every fucking turn. So personally for me, I
- 44:31Speaker 3: would have been okay with it because, you know, fuck
- 44:34Speaker 3: that guy. You know what I'm saying? I mean, I
- 44:37Speaker 3: share the same personal level, personal value of like, absolutely
- 44:40Speaker 3: do that shit. You know, fuck that nigga. At the
- 44:42Speaker 3: same time, from a straight mechanical logic perspective, that's the
- 44:46Speaker 3: narrative you gave me. The narrative you gave me was,
- 44:48Speaker 3: John has been built for this since he was five
- 44:51Speaker 3: years old. He was told, what do we call him?
- 44:53Speaker 3: The space messiah. Like, this is your destiny. And regardless
- 44:56Speaker 3: of if he's just lying to people, he keeps repeating
- 44:58Speaker 3: the mantra. You're a human. After a while, when you
- 45:00Speaker 3: keep repeating shit, you're going to believe it. So if
- 45:03Speaker 3: he did do that, I'd be like, well, the nigga
- 45:05Speaker 3: said he was going to take it. The nigga said
- 45:06Speaker 3: the ring was his. why not it wouldn't have felt
- 45:10Speaker 3: wrong at all and i don't i don't want people
- 45:12Speaker 3: to say well he has the integrity no he fucking
- 45:14Speaker 3: doesn't then you express over and over again where the
- 45:17Speaker 3: integrity was not fucking there he didn't have integrity when
- 45:19Speaker 3: he was fucking the fucking manhunter like come on guys
- 45:21Speaker 3: like it just would not it wouldn't it still would
- 45:25Speaker 3: make sense to answer your question rod if they did
- 45:27Speaker 3: write it that way that he took it.
- 45:28Speaker 1: I just feel like we'd have a different conversation on
- 45:31Speaker 1: a bunch of different blowback where it would just be
- 45:34Speaker 1: other people upset like Like, well, I don't want to
- 45:37Speaker 1: root for this guy now. He's, you know, like, what's
- 45:41Speaker 1: the Guardians thing? They like that he did that shit
- 45:43Speaker 1: just because they told him to do that shit. That's,
- 45:45Speaker 1: you know, so I would I think that once again,
- 45:48Speaker 1: that's what I like about these discussions, because I just
- 45:50Speaker 1: feel like writers make choices and then we talk about
- 45:53Speaker 1: the choices. And it's fun in my mind to think
- 45:56Speaker 1: of like, yeah, what if they did do that? Well,
- 45:59Speaker 1: how would I feel? Like, cause I didn't want him
- 46:03Speaker 1: to give the ring back. I, and I felt like
- 46:05Speaker 1: the step on the plate thing was, uh, an acknowledgement
- 46:10Speaker 1: of the show going, yeah, we are going to pause it.
- 46:14Speaker 3: So you don't know.
- 46:15Speaker 2: Would he have given the ring back? Or was he
- 46:17Speaker 2: going to keep the ring?
- 46:17Speaker 1: He says he wasn't going to, but he's been lying
- 46:19Speaker 1: all week. So maybe he was going to keep that shit.
- 46:23Speaker 1: I enjoyed that moral quandary. And they're teasing it out, obviously.
- 46:28Speaker 1: But yeah, man, if he would have straight up ganked
- 46:30Speaker 1: that ring, I don't know, man.
- 46:32Speaker 2: It would have been so titillating. It would have been lit.
- 46:39Speaker 3: For me, I just think that the whole guardian thing
- 46:41Speaker 3: is in question. I feel like everyone is lying. Is
- 46:46Speaker 3: this person who's calling themselves a guardian actually a guardian?
- 46:50Speaker 3: If they were a guardian, why would they keep telling
- 46:54Speaker 3: this man that the only way for him to get
- 46:56Speaker 3: a ring is to take someone else's ring? That does
- 46:59Speaker 3: not make sense. And so for me, I think I
- 47:05Speaker 3: don't care about John's choices here. I really don't. Because
- 47:11Speaker 3: for me, it's more the mystery of it all is like,
- 47:14Speaker 3: what is actually happening here? What are we actually allowing
- 47:19Speaker 3: ourselves to be misdirected into paying attention to when we
- 47:22Speaker 3: really need to be paying attention to X, Y, Z?
- 47:24Speaker 3: We're looking at freaking ABC. No, that's the wrong side
- 47:27Speaker 3: of the alphabet. We need to look over here. So
- 47:30Speaker 3: that's where my questions have been lying most of the time.
- 47:32Speaker 3: to get back to Sinestro before we pop too far
- 47:35Speaker 3: away from him. I think it's interesting. And I think, again,
- 47:39Speaker 3: everyone's lying. But also Sinestro says, I've been exactly who
- 47:43Speaker 3: I am this whole time. You just chose not to
- 47:45Speaker 3: see it. Be careful not to do that with John.
- 47:48Speaker 3: So for me, my question is, are you trying to
- 47:50Speaker 3: tell me? Because Sinestro's point is that even while isolated
- 47:56Speaker 3: in this prison, he somehow got word that, about John
- 48:00Speaker 3: being the trainee of Hal. Mm-hmm. Okay, I don't really
- 48:05Speaker 3: believe that. What I actually believe is probably more probable is,
- 48:10Speaker 3: like Ben was saying earlier, you see how they hemmed
- 48:12Speaker 3: me up, I got thought about, like, how do you
- 48:15Speaker 3: think they're doing you? And so what I think is
- 48:17Speaker 3: more probable is that if Hal was Sinestro's trainee... then
- 48:23Speaker 3: Sinesha probably knew who got called to get that ring
- 48:27Speaker 3: that Hal finally ended up with before Hal did. So
- 48:30Speaker 3: he probably knew about the existence of Jon Stewart Sr.
- 48:34Speaker 3: and about Junior, therefore then. So the idea of him
- 48:40Speaker 3: knowing about Jon being on the list of people who
- 48:46Speaker 3: would pop up if they wanted to get rid of
- 48:48Speaker 3: the threat, as Hal mentions later. Like, who serves... Because
- 48:52Speaker 3: when he's saying that, when he's describing how power works
- 48:55Speaker 3: in the car with John and what he's noticing, you think, okay,
- 48:59Speaker 3: he's talking about the Manhunter, but he's also talking about
- 49:01Speaker 3: the Guardians. He's like, who sounds like that to you?
- 49:04Speaker 3: To me, the first person that comes out to is
- 49:07Speaker 3: the Guardians. So when... John makes his mistake of showing
- 49:13Speaker 3: that he's lying. I don't think it's simply because of
- 49:15Speaker 3: the Manhunter situation. I think it's because he's also realizing
- 49:18Speaker 3: how much he can't trust the Guardians. He's already having
- 49:21Speaker 3: a moment where he didn't really... He's not following their orders.
- 49:24Speaker 3: He has his parents basically being his handlers. Did you
- 49:27Speaker 3: make that phone call yet? Did you go to the
- 49:29Speaker 3: pay phone? So I think that what's going on here,
- 49:33Speaker 3: there's more ties to the question of the Guardians and
- 49:36Speaker 3: what's going on with them.
- 49:37Speaker 5: And.
- 49:39Speaker 3: I think Sinestro has known that Hal's always been in
- 49:47Speaker 3: a position of there's going to always be someone to
- 49:50Speaker 3: take his place. There's a contingency plan, and he knew
- 49:53Speaker 3: exactly who that contingency plan was. And so for me,
- 49:56Speaker 3: I just have a lot of questions about What's happening here?
- 50:00Speaker 1: And it was a violation of Hal's oath to even
- 50:04Speaker 1: go talk to Sinestra.
- 50:05Speaker 3: Correct. Crazy. Apparently.
- 50:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought that was wild.
- 50:09Speaker 1: And for information that is extremely pertinent to what they're
- 50:15Speaker 1: trying to solve, this nigga does know stuff about the Manhunters.
- 50:18Speaker 2: He does know.
- 50:20Speaker 1: He had put together, okay, so this crash landing with
- 50:23Speaker 1: the ring shit, you would have known. And the Guardians
- 50:27Speaker 1: is like, yeah, you can't even be a Green Lantern
- 50:29Speaker 1: no more.
- 50:30Speaker 2: Fuck the plan.
- 50:31Speaker 1: We need to take your ring immediately. Why do you
- 50:33Speaker 1: want to disempower this man now? Like this moment. You
- 50:37Speaker 1: had a plan of succession. Now you just want to
- 50:39Speaker 1: steal it. Like I said, John's instincts to not do
- 50:44Speaker 1: it made me like him more, not less. I say
- 50:47Speaker 1: he's smarter than just, I have power in my hand.
- 50:50Speaker 1: I'm going to take it immediately. This is a man
- 50:52Speaker 1: who sat nine months and grew a beard.
- 50:54Speaker 3: This is true. Tyler Perry wig.
- 50:56Speaker 1: Like, this is a man that got, he got disciplined.
- 51:00Speaker 1: And if anything, I question and authority was my only
- 51:05Speaker 1: real caveat for him.
- 51:06Speaker 3: I was like, nah, bro, you, if you're going to
- 51:08Speaker 3: have the green lantern thing, you gotta be the, you
- 51:11Speaker 3: gotta be him.
- 51:13Speaker 2: When you see something is wrong, you just go, that's wrong.
- 51:15Speaker 1: You don't go, let me run it up the chain
- 51:17Speaker 1: at a garden and see what they got to say.
- 51:19Speaker 1: This was the first week that I was like, Oh, OK,
- 51:22Speaker 1: because last week was a lot of following orders, even
- 51:25Speaker 1: if it was from a black perspective. It was a
- 51:27Speaker 1: lot of like, listen, man, this is what they say
- 51:29Speaker 1: you need to be able to do. You got to
- 51:30Speaker 1: shoot your own mama app off her head. That's what
- 51:33Speaker 1: you got to do. I'm like, that's still following orders.
- 51:36Speaker 1: You got to show me the part of you that's
- 51:38Speaker 1: a hero. It's more heroic to me to see him
- 51:41Speaker 1: question authority than to just go along.
- 51:43Speaker 3: I also don't think it's, like, I'm just going to
- 51:45Speaker 3: say real quick, I don't think that it's a coincidence
- 51:48Speaker 3: that the first time we see him joke in this
- 51:49Speaker 3: series is the episode that he questions authority the most
- 51:52Speaker 3: in the series. Yes, agreed.
- 51:56Speaker 5: And on that, like, I also agree with you because,
- 51:59Speaker 5: like I said, a lot of people have been saying
- 52:00Speaker 5: how he hasn't questioned authority, even though I point out
- 52:02Speaker 5: it has been subtle, but he has. But I love
- 52:04Speaker 5: that this episode makes it, you know, in your face.
- 52:07Speaker 5: And just a few quick things I want to point
- 52:09Speaker 5: out that where the Guardian, and I want to say Guardian,
- 52:13Speaker 5: I think.
- 52:13Speaker 3: That's real important. It's important.
- 52:15Speaker 5: Yeah, their story just makes no sense. One, how the
- 52:18Speaker 5: fuck do you not know what happened on that prison? Like,
- 52:21Speaker 5: this is Sinestro. This is one of.
- 52:23Speaker 4: He killed a guardian.
- 52:25Speaker 5: You would want to know if this nigga's whispering, if
- 52:27Speaker 5: he's thinking in his cell, you'd want to know what
- 52:29Speaker 5: he's thinking about.
- 52:30Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 52:31Speaker 4: With, irregardless of Hal being there or not, all right?
- 52:34Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 52:35Speaker 4: That does not make sense.
- 52:37Speaker 5: The fact that they tell John that Hal has been
- 52:41Speaker 5: filing reports about John makes no sense when we know
- 52:45Speaker 5: Hal won't even update the hologram from 2016 or 2006,
- 52:50Speaker 5: 10 years ago.
- 52:51Speaker 4: So he's not filing reports on John. That was a lie.
- 52:55Speaker 3: You know? You're sounding like Maury right now.
- 52:57Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 52:58Speaker 3: And that's good, though, because when she was like, he's saying, wait,
- 53:03Speaker 3: I wrote it down because I was like, he said what?
- 53:05Speaker 3: He said that. He said that he's... Oh, no, no, no.
- 53:09Speaker 3: John did tell Sinestra that he was boring. But anyway... See,
- 53:13Speaker 3: it's tricky because the stuff that she said is stuff
- 53:16Speaker 3: that he would say.
- 53:18Speaker 2: But I was like.
- 53:20Speaker 3: That's a good lie.
- 53:23Speaker 1: They said Hal hadn't even made that copy of himself
- 53:26Speaker 1: in 10 years.
- 53:27Speaker 3: Yes. so like yeah yeah i'm believing he uploading reports
- 53:31Speaker 3: like why are you lying to john like i like
- 53:33Speaker 3: i said i i hear what y'all saying but if
- 53:35Speaker 3: he would took that fucking ring i'm like you a
- 53:37Speaker 3: sucker now no you fell for that shit she's obviously
- 53:41Speaker 3: a fucking liar i don't like you got like you
- 53:44Speaker 3: smart in this i want to root for a smart
- 53:46Speaker 3: black man i want to believe right in fucking people's
- 53:49Speaker 3: wives for a good reason. I don't want to just
- 53:51Speaker 3: think this nigga can't control himself.
- 53:53Speaker 2: He's just a.
- 53:54Speaker 1: Fucking idiot in town that trusts all the white people
- 53:56Speaker 1: in charge.
- 53:57Speaker 2: I just don't want to believe that. Me neither.
- 54:00Speaker 1: And the joke part portion to me also gave like
- 54:04Speaker 1: niggas at work. Cause like you be at work, that's
- 54:08Speaker 1: your work. You, and every once in a while, real,
- 54:11Speaker 1: you crack out.
- 54:12Speaker 2: Like as a person.
- 54:12Speaker 1: That, that's had, that had a podcast and was the
- 54:15Speaker 1: most famous person in my building. And no one knew
- 54:18Speaker 1: every once in a while, it will pop out. And
- 54:20Speaker 1: I'll be like, Ooh, I don't know this white man
- 54:24Speaker 1: like that.
- 54:24Speaker 2: I don't know him like that. It felt like he
- 54:26Speaker 2: gave him because even how I was like, did you
- 54:29Speaker 2: just make a joke? It's like, you know what?
- 54:31Speaker 3: This boring ass nigga made a joke. Nah, nah. You
- 54:34Speaker 3: know what?
- 54:34Speaker 1: We could probably drill down there now that I think
- 54:36Speaker 1: about it. They probably got some stuff in there.
- 54:38Speaker 3: Portia, I like your theory. I think the theory makes
- 54:41Speaker 3: sense and it kind of leads me to, are we
- 54:43Speaker 3: saying that Liana is a rogue agent at this point? Yes. 100%.
- 54:48Speaker 5: And my last, well, probably not the last one, But
- 54:51Speaker 5: one of the other interesting connections and visual themes is
- 54:55Speaker 5: I pointed this out before when the cow, when we're
- 54:59Speaker 5: in the slaughterhouse and we see the cow walk through
- 55:01Speaker 5: the black hole, which seems to be the same type
- 55:04Speaker 5: of transport that the dude who sends John to go.
- 55:08Speaker 4: See Leon uses. So they're both using the same technology, right?
- 55:13Speaker 3: Correct.
- 55:14Speaker 5: And if you freeze frame it, the second before the
- 55:18Speaker 5: cow walks through, the black hole and the lights on
- 55:21Speaker 5: the ceiling.
- 55:21Speaker 4: Form the logo for the Black Lanterns.
- 55:25Speaker 3: That's not... Yeah, that is not... I was wondering that.
- 55:28Speaker 4: Yeah, that is not, you know, a coinkydink.
- 55:31Speaker 3: Is that the clip that we saw? Yeah, that's the
- 55:33Speaker 3: clip we see in the preview.
- 55:34Speaker 5: In the preview shot, they freeze framed it the second
- 55:37Speaker 5: before the cow walks out.
- 55:39Speaker 4: And so you can see that that is clearly... you know,
- 55:42Speaker 4: the Black Lanterns.
- 55:43Speaker 5: And that's why I said when, so when they're using
- 55:44Speaker 5: the same black hole technology, I don't know what the
- 55:48Speaker 5: Guardian is.
- 55:49Speaker 3: You know, I don't.
- 55:50Speaker 5: That's why I think, okay, I do believe Zoe might
- 55:54Speaker 5: be the Manhunt, right? But what the Guardian is or
- 55:57Speaker 5: if they are like in the comics, even Leanne, I think,
- 56:00Speaker 5: is a rogue Guardian in the comics at one point.
- 56:03Speaker 5: So the Guardians in general are just like the worst.
- 56:08Speaker 5: You know, I mean, they're like the Jedi Council, you know,
- 56:11Speaker 5: like they are pure trash. and they someone is always
- 56:15Speaker 5: going rogue or they're all you know as a unit
- 56:19Speaker 5: just being garbage so.
- 56:20Speaker 1: Y'all tell me what the black lanterns what's their deal
- 56:23Speaker 1: because i know the yellow but okay well.
- 56:26Speaker 5: There's all the different spectrum of the lanterns and once
- 56:29Speaker 5: again it seems like we're gonna see this because in
- 56:31Speaker 5: the preview and next week we see somebody's eye turn
- 56:33Speaker 5: red it might be john and that's a sign of
- 56:37Speaker 5: the red lantern when the rage infects them but Jeff
- 56:41Speaker 5: Johns was the dude who wrote all these different colors
- 56:43Speaker 5: of the lanterns and like yellow is fear, blue is hope,
- 56:47Speaker 5: orange is greed or selfishness, green is will, purple or
- 56:52Speaker 5: indigo is like love, right?
- 56:54Speaker 3: White is day, black is night. Yeah, white is whack.
- 56:58Speaker 3: Or darkness.
- 56:58Speaker 5: Yeah, we won't get into that part. But this one character,
- 57:02Speaker 5: the Black Hand, who starts creating his own... He's a
- 57:06Speaker 5: Green Lantern villain, and he gets empowered by this god
- 57:09Speaker 5: of death to create the Black Lantern Corps, and he
- 57:12Speaker 5: resurrects or makes zombified versions of a lot of people,
- 57:16Speaker 5: like Superman, et cetera, I mean, down the line. And
- 57:19Speaker 5: it was the series Blackest Night. And some people, because
- 57:23Speaker 5: Jeff Gunn has said that it's... all building to something,
- 57:28Speaker 5: you know, and the lanterns is a core part of that.
- 57:30Speaker 5: So some people think that that might be the big
- 57:32Speaker 5: crossover that they are eventually going to build to Blackest Night.
- 57:35Speaker 3: If it is a Black Lantern situation, that kind of
- 57:38Speaker 3: also makes sense because when we're talking about the significance
- 57:42Speaker 3: of the colors, Black also means death for those lanterns.
- 57:46Speaker 3: And the type of weapons that were being used on
- 57:49Speaker 3: Macon's Ranch, the darkness weapons. It was literally just nothing.
- 57:54Speaker 3: It was nothingness that they were getting hit with. And
- 57:57Speaker 3: then it disabled the Green Lantern power. So that's why
- 58:00Speaker 3: I was like, okay, that would make the most sense then. Yeah.
- 58:03Speaker 5: And then one other thing, because we're doing colors right now,
- 58:06Speaker 5: there's a lot of yellow in this episode. Again, when
- 58:10Speaker 5: the motel, I didn't notice this before, but the motel
- 58:13Speaker 5: sign is yellow at night. It glows yellow when Zoe
- 58:17Speaker 5: shows up because she's always surrounded by yellow. when they
- 58:20Speaker 5: go into the slaughterhouse before they get to the Black
- 58:22Speaker 5: Lantern's room, everything in that bitch is yellow.
- 58:24Speaker 3: The wires are yellow.
- 58:25Speaker 5: The tint, the hue of the scene itself. Yeah, the
- 58:30Speaker 5: paint bucket. I mean, the mop and mop is yellow.
- 58:34Speaker 5: Everything in there is yellow. So that was, you know,
- 58:36Speaker 5: all this type of stuff is intentional.
- 58:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 58:39Speaker 5: Whether or not they're like, I want to say again,
- 58:41Speaker 5: that does not mean Zoe is Sinestro's granddaughter. Like some
- 58:44Speaker 5: people said, or any of that type thing. It just
- 58:45Speaker 5: means that fear is involved in these situations.
- 58:49Speaker 3: I have a question and I really hope I was
- 58:51Speaker 3: not fucking tripping, but I, so I'm asking you guys
- 58:54Speaker 3: towards the end, um, when both John and how we're
- 58:57Speaker 3: in the car and, you know, they were having that
- 59:00Speaker 3: conversation about you lied, um, about, you know, like, you know,
- 59:04Speaker 3: you thought that Zoe was a man hunter. I swore.
- 59:07Speaker 3: I saw the moon moving. Oh, shit. Oh, Like I
- 59:10Speaker 3: did not notice that I watched it twice just to
- 59:15Speaker 3: make sure. And it looked like it started moving down
- 59:18Speaker 3: a quarter of an inch like in the screen because
- 59:20Speaker 3: the way this the frame was like a really wide
- 59:24Speaker 3: frame of like the countryside. There's nighttime. It was just
- 59:27Speaker 3: the road, the car. It was the light post. And
- 59:30Speaker 3: that's the moon. And it kind of looked like moon
- 59:32Speaker 3: moved a little bit low. I could have been tripping,
- 59:35Speaker 3: but someone else, I need y'all to watch it and see,
- 59:36Speaker 3: was I fucking tripping or not?
- 59:38Speaker 2: I'll tell you what I was watching.
- 59:40Speaker 3: Yes, please. And if I was, what the fuck was that?
- 59:43Speaker 2: Why is this nigga letting him drive his car? That part.
- 59:46Speaker 2: He can fly.
- 59:47Speaker 3: He can fly.
- 59:49Speaker 2: Why is he a driver?
- 59:50Speaker 4: What is going on?
- 59:51Speaker 1: He jumped out the car on you one time. Then
- 59:55Speaker 1: he took your front bumper off of your car when
- 59:57Speaker 1: you was out of town on a rental, my nigga.
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: I know you roll with stacks of cash and all
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: that shit, but bro, he's disrespecting your credit score and
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: your good name. And now he done hopped out the
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: car on your ass again. This time, if you get
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: the ring, you got my permission to whoop his motherfucking.
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: Ass because you owe him one, brother. That's a little
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: too much disrespect to me. This is the stuff I
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: talk about when I'm like, y'all do silly things. Like,
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: y'all purposely do silly writing things because it's like how
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: you get hit with the same trick twice. Like, this
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: happens to John. He got hit. He got jumped like two,
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: three times in the same episode. He got hit with
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: a car trick twice. Like, you know, niggas just jumping out.
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: He was even, Hal was even like situated the same
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: way with the one arm up. Like, you know, I'm
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: about to jump out this bitch, right? Like it was,
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: it was just like, he keeps fucking. There's an element
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: of naivety or naivete, whatever the word is that makes
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: me a little bit uncomfortable when it comes to John,
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: because it doesn't feel, it doesn't seem to align. Okay.
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: And this kind of goes back to the nerd thing, right?
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: So I... And by nerd, I mean, like, not just, like, uncool, but, like,
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: he was sheltered from a lot of things because he
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: was busy doing other things, right? And so... I just
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: don't understand someone as skilled as he is as a Marine,
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: as a sniper, as a studied person in fearlessness and yada, yada, yada.
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: Sometimes the way they present him as this young and
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: naive person... The things that he's naive about sometimes are weird.
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: I could almost see, aside from the fact that she
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: didn't have any riz, I could almost see him being
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: naive when it comes to dating or sex or whatever.
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: I could see that because he was busy doing other stuff, right? Yeah. But,
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: you know, naive in situations like this, it's weird. I
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: imagine that he has had to learn how to read people. And, like,
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: that's a part of fucking sniping niggas out. It's like,
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: you know, knowing when and how to read people. So
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: there are moments where he's naive in this series that
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: feel a little bit weird to me sometimes. It's like
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: sometimes I'm supposed to remember that he's a badass and
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: other times I'm supposed to forget.
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: Doesn't he also talk about being alone his whole life, too?
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: He's talked about that.
- 1:02:26Speaker 4: He's talked about.
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: They were like, won't you miss your family? That's what
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: Liana asked him when she was telling him about it,
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: being the Lantern. And he was just like, I've missed
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: them the entire time because he was treated differently. He
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: was separated. So yes, there's that aspect there. But it
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: is what Janisha said is what I've said before. It's
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: frequently at odds with everything else you've been telling me
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: about this guy. So yes, it's great in terms of
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: the banter and the conversation we're having, but it's also
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: just like... what is the real version of John? Who
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: is the real version of John?
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: He doesn't know.
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: We're on a journey for him to figure out who
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: he is. Because he's been built to be the Green
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: Lantern his whole life. What Hal has been throwing at
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: him is, are you sure you really want this? I
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: don't think you really want this. And he's kind of
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: in this place where he's like going forward with his
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: programming like yeah i do though like everything i've been
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: doing is about this but then at the same time
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: he's slowly picking up the clues of like it's not
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: just how being like a dick or weenie or whatever
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: like i legit like they're everyone's lying to me even
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: the organization of me getting this ring is like it's
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: all something that just makes me feel uncertain like why
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: i'm here but i don't know if i want to
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: do this I don't know if he's being challenged to
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: the question if he actually wants to do it. I
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: don't think he's there yet. I think he's just like,
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: I'm in the middle of it and I'm going to
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: get forward. I'm going to figure this out. Yeah. So,
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: I don't know. His characterization, I think, I really 100%
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: agree with you. Like, their consistency needing to be there behind, like,
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: what it is. But I think, when are humans consistent
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: about our, how we react to things? Like, we aren't. Like,
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: just as beings, like, we are never consistent. Like, we
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: feel this one way about this one thing this one day,
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: then we get over it. We don't feel that way
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: ever about it again. But some things will hold on
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: to you forever. Like, we, who knows? Like, so, I don't,
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: As much as I do love whenever the writing makes
- 1:04:15Speaker 3: it all come together, I don't quibble with there being
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: waves of difference because that's human nature.
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: So I'm not going to get too bad about it.
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: It's also super hard to write what they're writing, which
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: is this idea of him... They're using his emotionlessness as
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: the display that he's fearless. It was an interesting choice
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: that they made at the beginning because it's, you know,
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: acting and writing wise.
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: He's going to have a moment in the next four episodes.
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: We're like, oh, that's where he put all those emotions.
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: You know, like clear, like how even says, you know, one,
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: somebody might think you suppress it.
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: Your emotions. Well, he showed it in this episode. He
- 1:04:59Speaker 3: showed it in this episode. When they threatened the orbital
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: strike on their parents.
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: And the other thing about it, too, because, like, these
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: are the same parents that he was shooting apples off
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: their heads. And he was supposed, real mastering of fear
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: is that you supposed to be able to shoot.
- 1:05:14Speaker 3: Your mama, apparently, and you was going to be one
- 1:05:18Speaker 3: of them ones. You could wear the ring if it
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: comes down to it. You fearless.
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: You risk your parents' life. But not in that moment.
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: He was not ready to risk his family's life like that.
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: And the performances of Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler, to me,
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: are both amazing. Because the thing about the Landers is
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: they're all at their core the same as far as
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: the archetype of, like, you got to be fearless. But
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: how it shows up for them is so different. Even
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: the constructs in which how they employ the ring. I
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: don't know that Kyle Chandler could have made that. thing
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: no he couldn't like i don't think he could have
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: like his oh you get it junior like i'm like
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: yeah he should have been like nah you do it
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: you got it because i don't think he can like
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: no even guy gardner when they show his ring in
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: superman it looks more like watery like it's.
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: Open flowing or whatever yeah um.
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: John shit is meticulous this nigga made a watch you
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: know what i'm saying um so i just i'm really
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: intrigued by it and the moment they had in a
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: car where Hal tells him advice of like, hey, so
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: it is lonely. And to me, both of their performances
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: get lonely. It seems lonely to be a Green Lantern.
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: Nothing about this feels joyful. John getting the ring just
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: feels like a relief. Not a moment of like graduation
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: and and enjoyment. It seemed like when he get the ring,
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: it's going to be like, that's what I was supposed
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: to do. Like finally, you know, it's like, it's like parent,
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: you know, as children of immigrants, where.
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: It's like, you're going to be a doctor. The only
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: thing you can do from that point is fail to
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: achieve the dream they told you you better have.
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: And if you get that ring, it's like, maybe you
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: won't be as or get that degree, you might not
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: get to enjoy it the same way as somebody who
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: was like, I got to pick this path for myself.
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: And now I'm a doctor. It's like, no boy, you
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: going to be a doctor. Like, so that's how John,
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: it feels. Both of them feel sad and lonely in
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: different ways to me.
- 1:07:19Speaker 5: I gotta, I gotta bring something up. And cause one
- 1:07:22Speaker 5: thing that really bothered me this episode. And when I
- 1:07:24Speaker 5: really turned on the guardian was when they were talking
- 1:07:29Speaker 5: to John and they were like, I thought you.
- 1:07:32Speaker 3: Was a good Negro, you know, basically.
- 1:07:34Speaker 5: Like, your mama told me you was one of the
- 1:07:36Speaker 5: good ones.
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: And no, you're not.
- 1:07:38Speaker 5: You know, you were trash like the rest of them.
- 1:07:41Speaker 5: And that really bothered me.
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: Sorry, not just like the rest of them, but like
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: your daddy.
- 1:07:45Speaker 5: Like your daddy, yeah. Just like your daddy, trash. And
- 1:07:48Speaker 5: so that really bothered me and really turned me against them.
- 1:07:52Speaker 5: But then what you were just saying, Rob, maybe, and
- 1:07:54Speaker 5: I'm going to have to ask this question on the
- 1:07:56Speaker 5: panel is, Fuck, I didn't want to have to admit it,
- 1:08:00Speaker 5: but this show is starting to feel like copaganda, man. Like,
- 1:08:04Speaker 5: because it's like the idea that space cops being a
- 1:08:06Speaker 5: good thing and the fact that John isn't, you know,
- 1:08:11Speaker 5: and no one is questioning the police in general and
- 1:08:15Speaker 5: this whole, you know, one of the good ones thing
- 1:08:18Speaker 5: and like the fact that that's, but Like you said, Rob,
- 1:08:21Speaker 5: maybe that's what we're meant to do.
- 1:08:23Speaker 4: I was going.
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: To say, propaganda to me presents these things without question.
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: I think this whole show is questioning us all. From
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: the guardians to literally the local sheriff, everybody got some
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: great shit. Honestly, to give them credit even, I'll take
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: it because it's kind of like Watchmen. I think it's
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: the opposite of cop again, because our two protagonists were questioning.
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: Yeah, they want to be Mr.
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: Space Cop. And we're like, nigga, the way you moving
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: like i don't i don't think it's as uh giving
- 1:08:58Speaker 3: us a simple for straightforward like these guys need to
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: solve the problems of the universe and even the way
- 1:09:03Speaker 3: they present how how's brash shit is treated as brash
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: like they're not treating.
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: It like But that's what he does, guys.
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: Yeah. He's the best. He's the lone wolf.
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: Because Hal Jordan will solve the case. You know what
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: I mean? Now, they're like, this dude is out of
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: fucking pocket.
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: So, like, to me, I don't feel like it's propaganda.
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: They got four episodes to prove me wrong, but... Even
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: True Detective was the opposite of cop. Every cop in
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: there is just dirty as fuck.
- 1:09:30Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: And the fucking cases get, quote unquote, solved with question marks,
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: which I'm setting myself up now. We get to episode
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: eight and we don't get no satisfying conclusion.
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: I'm willing to be like, oh, yeah.
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: Because that's what True Detective do, too.
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: They be like, we caught the killer. Probably not. But
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: we closed the case. And that's what matters more than anything.
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: To cops, is closing the case. That's the thing, too, about, like, cops. Like, it's...
- 1:09:55Speaker 3: So I think, too, the thought, because this is bringing
- 1:09:58Speaker 3: to mind the idea that, like, how Hal is moving
- 1:10:02Speaker 3: is kind of like a hazing ritual, basically, to him.
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: And it's like, what is an order or fraternity or
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: whatever without some hazing into it? And that's what, like,
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: cops are going to do. And so there's, like, I
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: think what we're getting subtly is every aspect of cophood
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: kind of being, like, questioned from military in the United States. Yes. So, like,
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: elite sniper side of that to the sheriff in the
- 1:10:26Speaker 3: town to the militiamen who are on the ranch. Like,
- 1:10:30Speaker 3: we're getting every version of cop put under scrutiny in
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: some ways that I enjoy. I didn't really think of
- 1:10:36Speaker 3: it that way. So thanks for adding that to the table,
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: like the copaganda and Rod's kind of like, but is
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: it kind of part. I also want to note that
- 1:10:44Speaker 3: one of my questions around this is related to, like,
- 1:10:48Speaker 3: I've been, sir, the, I've been served at all because
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: like you were saying, whenever the guardian, like that turned
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: you off and that was, it turned me off to that.
- 1:10:56Speaker 3: Like basically what Bernadette's choice and decision for how to
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: train John has created is a rundown of like mental
- 1:11:09Speaker 3: methods of how the guardian can control and use what
- 1:11:13Speaker 3: she's learned from Bernadette to control John. And everyone has
- 1:11:16Speaker 3: been saying from, I forget the name, Anon, from the
- 1:11:21Speaker 3: alien group who are trying to bomb the town for
- 1:11:25Speaker 3: the Manhunter, to Sinestro, to Halim. They've all been saying
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: that you can control Jon. And so there's a lot
- 1:11:35Speaker 3: going on there that I have questions about. But then
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: the Alvin Sir part for me is also, why are we...
- 1:11:42Speaker 3: It's very interesting to me that Hal got the ring
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: from Alvin Sir, But there's like no loyalty there because
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: he was like, I've been Sir King down with the Manhunter.
- 1:11:54Speaker 3: Like for me, for how to say that was very question.
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: I had so many question marks. I'm like, does he
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: not have any sense of loyalty to the person who
- 1:12:02Speaker 3: bestowed upon him the ring?
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: And like, why is like.
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: that the first time we're learning that the Manhunter wasn't
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: just some, like, like they were in like some air
- 1:12:11Speaker 3: fight or whatever. And Alvin, sir, like kind of crashed
- 1:12:14Speaker 3: to earth in an air fight with the Manhunter. Like, um,
- 1:12:17Speaker 3: how basically said to Hector, he was like, if the
- 1:12:21Speaker 3: Manhunter was in, uh, if you were in the plane
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: with Alvin, sir, you would know what the color of Alvin,
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: sir was. So, um, The whole thought here is that
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: Abin Sur was in a mix with the Manhunter, who
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: is the greatest, I guess, antagonist of the Guardians, right?
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: So I'm just like, I have so many questions. What
- 1:12:40Speaker 3: are we supposed to be doing with that information? Especially
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: because Abin Sur had the ring before Hal got it.
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: So what is that situation? What was that relationship like
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: between Hal and Abin Sur? What? Well, Abin Sur dies quick,
- 1:12:54Speaker 3: but the thing is that... But he has, like, memories
- 1:12:56Speaker 3: stored on, like, the ring, right?
- 1:12:58Speaker 5: And what we've talked about is why is Sinestro... Why
- 1:13:01Speaker 5: did he rebel against the Guardians in the first place?
- 1:13:05Speaker 5: And what did Abin Sur find out when he went
- 1:13:08Speaker 5: to pick up the Manhunter?
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: Because, remember, the.
- 1:13:10Speaker 5: Manhunter had exterminated Anton.
- 1:13:12Speaker 4: That's, dude, his whole family, his whole planet.
- 1:13:15Speaker 5: So then this Green Lantern, Abin Sur shows up, picks
- 1:13:19Speaker 5: up the Manhunter... And they were like, Anton was like, yo,
- 1:13:22Speaker 5: they didn't even let us know what they were going to.
- 1:13:24Speaker 3: Do with it.
- 1:13:25Speaker 5: And now whether or not something happens where the Manhunter
- 1:13:28Speaker 5: causes Abin Surtur crash or what happened to cause Abin
- 1:13:32Speaker 5: Surtur crash, they crash and then the Manhunter gets out
- 1:13:35Speaker 5: on Earth. But Sinestro, I think what I've, you know,
- 1:13:39Speaker 5: my theory is that Sinestro has found out that the
- 1:13:43Speaker 5: Guardians created the Manhunters before the Green Lantern Corps, set
- 1:13:46Speaker 5: them out there. They did all this damage, killed all
- 1:13:49Speaker 5: these people. And then the Guardians create the Green Lantern Corps,
- 1:13:53Speaker 5: tell them to go clean up the Manhunters, but don't
- 1:13:56Speaker 5: explain to anyone that they even created the Manhunters in
- 1:13:59Speaker 5: the first place. So I think Sinestro finds out this
- 1:14:03Speaker 5: and it's like, yo, what the Negro, what? And turns
- 1:14:06Speaker 5: on them. And that's what causes all this. And I
- 1:14:08Speaker 5: think Hal has found out all this too. So Hal
- 1:14:11Speaker 5: knows about this or knows some of it. And that's
- 1:14:14Speaker 5: why he kind of sides with Sinestro where he's like, yo,
- 1:14:17Speaker 5: this dude's not wrong.
- 1:14:18Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 1:14:19Speaker 3: He might not be right. It's like the kill Margaret situation.
- 1:14:22Speaker 3: It's why he goes to ask him for help. That's
- 1:14:24Speaker 3: what Hal did. Hal went out there to get help.
- 1:14:27Speaker 3: He went out to go to his daddy to say, Daddy,
- 1:14:30Speaker 3: how am I supposed to... deal with this and what's
- 1:14:32Speaker 3: going on. What the fuck is a Manhunter? What should
- 1:14:35Speaker 3: I know about this, right? And just on that conversation
- 1:14:39Speaker 3: that they had, I just wanted to touch on the
- 1:14:40Speaker 3: fact that it was actually a refreshing conversation, particularly because
- 1:14:43Speaker 3: everything we had said about Sinestro basically is like, every
- 1:14:46Speaker 3: other nigga is lying. I'm being me. You still could
- 1:14:49Speaker 3: also be lying as well. We know you're working with
- 1:14:52Speaker 3: Liana and friends because you're part of the control construct, right?
- 1:14:57Speaker 3: I did love that he told how, like, I don't
- 1:15:00Speaker 3: care now. None of that Manhunter shit. That's your op.
- 1:15:02Speaker 3: You need to go smoke him. I love that. And
- 1:15:03Speaker 3: we was talking about John. Um, and just before we
- 1:15:07Speaker 3: move on to the next, like the final point, like
- 1:15:09Speaker 3: just what everyone's been saying, or Ben, you, you positive
- 1:15:12Speaker 3: theory of this being propaganda, Rod, your response to that overall,
- 1:15:17Speaker 3: this show is showing you that being a green lantern
- 1:15:19Speaker 3: is dirty work. The entire universe is dirty as fuck.
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: And that's an aspect that I personally, like with the
- 1:15:27Speaker 3: little bit of knowledge I do have of this DC
- 1:15:31Speaker 3: character and the stories is that I didn't realize how
- 1:15:34Speaker 3: deep it went. And I think that is potentially, we'll
- 1:15:37Speaker 3: see episode eight, but that's potentially a triumph of what
- 1:15:40Speaker 3: this series is trying to do to show that, one,
- 1:15:43Speaker 3: this is not your typical superhero thing where it's just
- 1:15:45Speaker 3: like there are very black and white lines that there's
- 1:15:48Speaker 3: not a lot of in between or ambiguity between people.
- 1:15:51Speaker 3: Like there's stuff that we question. We've been questioning every
- 1:15:53Speaker 3: single last person here, including the quote protagonist, right? Or
- 1:15:56Speaker 3: the quote good guy or whatever that person is, right?
- 1:15:58Speaker 3: Like none of this is, all this is meant to
- 1:16:01Speaker 3: make you feel uncomfortable about everyone involved is to make
- 1:16:04Speaker 3: you question everything you thought and are thinking about where
- 1:16:07Speaker 3: the story is going. I do think it's potentially a
- 1:16:10Speaker 3: commentary on cops. Rod, you were speaking to that. And,
- 1:16:14Speaker 3: you know, and it's also just like we have the
- 1:16:16Speaker 3: inward commentary, the outward commentary. It's also just like, again,
- 1:16:19Speaker 3: showing how much you can really play with a character
- 1:16:23Speaker 3: that is a comic book character that it's not as
- 1:16:26Speaker 3: straightforward as we've been led to believe, you know, that
- 1:16:29Speaker 3: there's cute shit that's happened over the years with all the,
- 1:16:31Speaker 3: you know, the 20 years that we've been seeing quote
- 1:16:33Speaker 3: superhero films and TV, but this is different. This, this,
- 1:16:36Speaker 3: this series has moved us in a different way than any,
- 1:16:40Speaker 3: I don't remember having conversations like this in most of
- 1:16:42Speaker 3: the shit we've been seeing. So I will say that
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: if anything else they got to get, they meaning that
- 1:16:47Speaker 3: the lanterns team, I want to give them kudos for that.
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: For sure.
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: Even other DC properties like Peacemaker and shit ain't going.
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: It feels different from even that.
- 1:16:58Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. Completely. I want to touch on, I want
- 1:17:01Speaker 3: to touch on the, uh, one of the good ones
- 1:17:03Speaker 3: kind of, um, thank you.
- 1:17:05Speaker 4: Cause yeah, I think.
- 1:17:07Speaker 3: That, yeah, I think it might be its own thing.
- 1:17:10Speaker 3: And I fully understand like all the points that were
- 1:17:12Speaker 3: made about that. And I, right. I love what you
- 1:17:14Speaker 3: said about like all the things that are actually being questioned.
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: Like just because you present something doesn't mean that we, that,
- 1:17:21Speaker 3: that as a writer or as a creator in these shows,
- 1:17:23Speaker 3: it doesn't mean you're in support of it. You know,
- 1:17:25Speaker 3: like even all the, Even all the nuances of toxic
- 1:17:27Speaker 3: whiteness that we see here, it doesn't necessarily mean that
- 1:17:30Speaker 3: they're presenting it like, yeah, we think this is great.
- 1:17:33Speaker 3: It's like, no, look, this is what it be. People
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: are weird, you know? But one of the good ones,
- 1:17:40Speaker 3: it made me think about episode three and the excitement
- 1:17:44Speaker 3: at the parents, at the possibility that, okay, one of
- 1:17:47Speaker 3: our children is going to be able to potentially... What's
- 1:17:51Speaker 3: the word? Get up out the mud? Get us up
- 1:17:54Speaker 3: out the mud. Get us up out the mud, but
- 1:17:56Speaker 3: not the mud, right? Because I won't go deep into that,
- 1:18:00Speaker 3: but they're carrying on the legacy. Like the baton is
- 1:18:02Speaker 3: going forward. Right, but no. One of our Black children
- 1:18:07Speaker 3: is going to be able to, I'm not trying to
- 1:18:09Speaker 3: say transcend race, but is going to be able to transcend.
- 1:18:12Speaker 3: Make a generational curse? But we're not the ones that
- 1:18:16Speaker 3: are cursed. One of our children is going to be
- 1:18:19Speaker 3: donned a Green Lantern and not have to navigate... blackness
- 1:18:25Speaker 3: in the way that we are forced to navigate blackness
- 1:18:27Speaker 3: we're not cursed being black is fucking lit you're dope
- 1:18:31Speaker 3: but we are treated a certain way and if you
- 1:18:33Speaker 3: are a cop if you are a doctor if you
- 1:18:36Speaker 3: are a green lantern if you quote unquote make it
- 1:18:39Speaker 3: right if you make it in one of these ways
- 1:18:41Speaker 3: if you become an academic all the things that these
- 1:18:44Speaker 3: revolutionary niggas who are online but then they go and
- 1:18:47Speaker 3: they clock into their jobs and they do what they're
- 1:18:49Speaker 3: told all of the things that they aspire to, okay,
- 1:18:53Speaker 3: when they're not online, all of that, that to me,
- 1:18:56Speaker 3: that's the one of the good ones thing. Like it's unfortunate,
- 1:19:00Speaker 3: but the reality is in the world, there's the world
- 1:19:03Speaker 3: that we want and then the world that we live in.
- 1:19:05Speaker 3: In the world that we live in, Being black in
- 1:19:09Speaker 3: the colonized world is very difficult. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:19:13Speaker 3: The things that we have to navigate, not being black,
- 1:19:15Speaker 3: but the way that we're treated is fucking whack. And
- 1:19:18Speaker 3: so the excitement is, at the opportunity for one of
- 1:19:22Speaker 3: your children to be able to transcend that experience as
- 1:19:27Speaker 3: an individual, right? And potentially by proximity to that child
- 1:19:32Speaker 3: or their legacy or whatever, be able to navigate the
- 1:19:37Speaker 3: world in an easier way. And that means that's the
- 1:19:40Speaker 3: very basic things that we all aspire to, having enough
- 1:19:44Speaker 3: financial access to be able to live where and how
- 1:19:46Speaker 3: we want to live. Having access to fucking healthcare. Basic shit. Not, oh,
- 1:19:52Speaker 3: he wants to be white or they want to have
- 1:19:55Speaker 3: with this class. It's not as basic as fucking that.
- 1:19:58Speaker 3: It's the real material issues that we face as Black
- 1:20:03Speaker 3: people in this country that limit our access to healthcare.
- 1:20:07Speaker 3: The basic necessities of life. And so that that element
- 1:20:11Speaker 3: of like, oh, he'll be able to be, quote unquote,
- 1:20:14Speaker 3: one of the good ones. Yeah, this class or white
- 1:20:16Speaker 3: folks see it as, oh, he's one of the good ones.
- 1:20:18Speaker 3: We see the opportunity to transcend the experience. of existing
- 1:20:24Speaker 3: in a hostile white society so yeah I do think
- 1:20:27Speaker 3: that that element is there but in this series I
- 1:20:30Speaker 3: don't necessarily think it's so intrinsically tied to the copiness
- 1:20:35Speaker 3: of it it's tied to this opportunity that you know
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: even For any of our nerd kids out there, the
- 1:20:42Speaker 3: opportunity when you move from the regular classes to the
- 1:20:45Speaker 3: nerd classes and how excited your parents be that now
- 1:20:48Speaker 3: you'd be set on a trajectory to potentially get into,
- 1:20:52Speaker 3: you know, get into a better school and this, that
- 1:20:54Speaker 3: or whatever. It's not like, oh, we've arrived and we
- 1:20:56Speaker 3: can ascend into whiteness. It's We've seen how difficult and
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: how whack we are treated when we don't have these
- 1:21:02Speaker 3: quote unquote things that a toxic white society has decided
- 1:21:06Speaker 3: are special. You know what I'm saying? And so that's
- 1:21:09Speaker 3: that I think is important. We can't ignore the material
- 1:21:13Speaker 3: realities of oppression. Yeah, no.
- 1:21:16Speaker 4: And I want to add that. And that was such
- 1:21:18Speaker 4: a word.
- 1:21:19Speaker 3: That's a word, man. Yeah.
- 1:21:21Speaker 5: And I think the potential for copaganda and what John's
- 1:21:26Speaker 5: parents and what John's journey is.
- 1:21:28Speaker 3: Are two separate things.
- 1:21:30Speaker 5: And that's why I was so offended by what she said,
- 1:21:32Speaker 5: because like you said, Jay, it's also the fact that
- 1:21:35Speaker 5: she called out his dad. And it's like, his dad
- 1:21:39Speaker 5: should have been fucking Green Lantern. His mom should have
- 1:21:41Speaker 5: been Green Lantern. It's this bullshit ass rules that y'all
- 1:21:44Speaker 5: have that prevented them.
- 1:21:46Speaker 3: And when.
- 1:21:47Speaker 4: some certain.
- 1:21:48Speaker 5: Commentators are quite, or people have been like, Oh, why
- 1:21:52Speaker 5: did the parents do this? Why would they trust this
- 1:21:54Speaker 5: guardian and all that? It's like, again, in this world,
- 1:21:57Speaker 5: this woman, this person comes down from space and says,
- 1:22:00Speaker 5: your kid could be Michael Jackson. So of course they're
- 1:22:02Speaker 5: going to turn into Joe Jackson.
- 1:22:03Speaker 4: Like, you know, it's.
- 1:22:05Speaker 5: Like if someone in, in this reality, this is Greenland
- 1:22:08Speaker 5: or like you said, this is a person who's.
- 1:22:10Speaker 4: Not getting stopped by the cops. You know what I mean?
- 1:22:12Speaker 4: John is Greenland and driving down the street. Oh shit.
- 1:22:14Speaker 4: It's John Stewart. You know, it's not, Oh, shit, nigga,
- 1:22:17Speaker 4: get out the car.
- 1:22:18Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 1:22:19Speaker 4: So that is what they are looking at.
- 1:22:20Speaker 3: But they are doing that, though. Like, he's in this
- 1:22:22Speaker 3: town and they're like, oh, well, that's a sidekick. So
- 1:22:25Speaker 3: he don't know.
- 1:22:26Speaker 5: But see, this the parents don't know that, you know,
- 1:22:29Speaker 5: as as that time they're hoping for this not to
- 1:22:32Speaker 5: be the reality.
- 1:22:33Speaker 3: And and then like, wait, wait, wait. Before you move
- 1:22:35Speaker 3: on to that, before you move on from that.
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: Sorry.
- 1:22:38Speaker 3: I also let's let's be for fucking real. black children
- 1:22:41Speaker 3: and and this is not a uh this is not
- 1:22:44Speaker 3: a monolithic existence as i've gotten older i realized oh
- 1:22:47Speaker 3: i was beaten like a slave but not every black
- 1:22:49Speaker 3: kid was beaten like a slave and my parents weren't
- 1:22:51Speaker 3: even military then at least you had military uh a
- 1:22:55Speaker 3: military dad my my two of my both my grandfather's
- 1:22:58Speaker 3: military but my parents ain't have shit to do with
- 1:23:00Speaker 3: that and so you know i was beat by multiple
- 1:23:03Speaker 3: people regularly right i was beat like a slave And
- 1:23:06Speaker 3: so my point is that, and again, while it's not
- 1:23:10Speaker 3: a monolithic experience, there are lots of black children who
- 1:23:13Speaker 3: have had that experience.
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: We've been beaten for less.
- 1:23:16Speaker 3: We've been abused for less.
- 1:23:18Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:23:19Speaker 3: I'm a smart, loving, caring person, but I'm not the
- 1:23:22Speaker 3: fucking president. You know what I'm saying? The abuse, I
- 1:23:25Speaker 3: don't know what the goal was. It does not qualify
- 1:23:26Speaker 3: you to become Michael Jackson. It does not make, it
- 1:23:29Speaker 3: does not. Yeah. So these people, black children have been
- 1:23:33Speaker 3: abused for less and i think it's clear in the
- 1:23:35Speaker 3: show that even though his parents were very um hard
- 1:23:39Speaker 3: with him they were also they also very clearly loved
- 1:23:43Speaker 3: him and it's why we were all fucking offended we
- 1:23:45Speaker 3: should start started talking sideways about his fucking daddy yeah
- 1:23:47Speaker 3: it was intentional i think the writing writers knew that
- 1:23:50Speaker 3: we would be fucking offended or whatever.
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: Right reminds me of uh sports parents like like if
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: you've ever seen like a sports parent for a kid
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: who's they who they really think is going to be
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: a professional uh that shit is no fun and games
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: like all the fun that me you and all the
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: other kids had playing sports they don't really have fun
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: playing sports they're the it's a job from them from
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: the time they're a child and it felt like that
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: too and i didn't take it as a representation of
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: every black parent when i saw it i took it
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: as like this shit went to the black parents that
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: would be the LaVar Ball parents. Like, there's plenty of
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: people who also were rejected that wouldn't have ran that
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: shit back.
- 1:24:36Speaker 3: You know what I mean? Like, man, get the fuck
- 1:24:37Speaker 3: out of my yard.
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: Thanks for the diamonds.
- 1:24:40Speaker 3: Bye. I'm good.
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: Like, do white people crazy.
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: And they just happened to get to, you know, Gary, Indiana,
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: Joe and Catherine. And they they was like, boy, you're
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: going to be you're going to be a Green Lantern.
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: Your brother Tito, they don't got it.
- 1:25:02Speaker 3: And my point about about certain black children being beat
- 1:25:05Speaker 3: for less is that the you know, obviously lots of
- 1:25:10Speaker 3: us were beat. out of anger and ignorance and all
- 1:25:13Speaker 3: kinds of things, right?
- 1:25:14Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:25:16Speaker 3: There's an element of these beatings that were also associated
- 1:25:19Speaker 3: with the.
- 1:25:20Speaker 5: Hope The hope that.
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: You will do well, right?
- 1:25:25Speaker 3: I'm beating you because I love you. I'm beating you
- 1:25:28Speaker 3: to keep you out the fucking, you know, the strip
- 1:25:31Speaker 3: club or whatever is seen as bad. I'm beating you
- 1:25:34Speaker 3: to keep you off the street. I'm beating you to
- 1:25:35Speaker 3: keep you out of jail. I'm beating you, you know,
- 1:25:39Speaker 3: for the discipline so that maybe you'll be this other
- 1:25:41Speaker 3: thing or whatever.
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: But, like.
- 1:25:44Speaker 3: None of us were being beat to potentially be the
- 1:25:46Speaker 3: fucking Green Lantern.
- 1:25:47Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying?
- 1:25:48Speaker 3: So it's a big deal. And for all of the
- 1:25:53Speaker 3: kids who were abused and then turned out to be
- 1:25:57Speaker 3: one of the Jacksons or for all the kids who
- 1:25:59Speaker 3: were abused... And then, you know, we're successful as the
- 1:26:03Speaker 3: ball children are. I mean, we knew what the dream was.
- 1:26:06Speaker 3: So we're like, are they successful? They're fucking doing great. Okay.
- 1:26:09Speaker 3: Those kids are doing great. For all of those people,
- 1:26:13Speaker 3: there are lots of kids who we didn't become whatever
- 1:26:16Speaker 3: we thought we was going to become or whatever the
- 1:26:19Speaker 3: hope was that we would become when we were being abused.
- 1:26:21Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying? Or we fucking did. You
- 1:26:24Speaker 3: know what I'm saying? Or we fucking did. And we're
- 1:26:27Speaker 3: not in.
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: Jail or we're not whatever.
- 1:26:28Speaker 4: So it's just.
- 1:26:30Speaker 3: it's not uncommon. Like I just, I think people are
- 1:26:32Speaker 3: being too hard on these parents and they're not connecting
- 1:26:36Speaker 3: with the actual material experience of certain classes of black
- 1:26:39Speaker 3: people who don't have access to the things that we need.
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: I think it's also a commentary on the unseen cost
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: of black excellence and how a lot of this is also, uh,
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: us as a society growing, right? Because it, I think
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: it is good that people saw it and went, Oh,
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: You know, like, I don't want to live in a
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: world where black people look at it and be like,
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: that's how it be to be. Put that heat on
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: his ass.
- 1:27:04Speaker 3: Like, no, you should be like, whoa, this is what
- 1:27:06Speaker 3: it take to be the Jackie Robinson of space.
- 1:27:09Speaker 2: That might not be an admirable goal.
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: In the way that he has to be introduced to
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: trauma to achieve it in that these are the tools
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: that they had to be like, this.
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: Is what we think we can get.
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: And only because of that episode, it becomes intertwined with
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: white privilege because of how, right?
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: It becomes like, this.
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: Is what you have to do to a black kid
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: in order to put them in a world with the
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: confidence of a mediocre white man.
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: You got to do.
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: All this shit just so he could be like, I
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: ain't scared because there's a lot of very real shit
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: that a black child should be scared of that he
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: is not making up. So you almost got to reverse
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: engineer this motherfucker from.
- 1:27:52Speaker 3: Introducing all these Scary elements to him so that he
- 1:27:56Speaker 3: can one day hopefully become the white man's successor if
- 1:28:00Speaker 3: he gets the ring and steals it from him when
- 1:28:03Speaker 3: he lets him borrow it for one second.
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: That's the dream his parents had. And we would have
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: felt great about it when we saw it on the screen.
- 1:28:10Speaker 3: I think that's the actual humiliation of witch rule, right?
- 1:28:13Speaker 3: It's like, that, like, the guardian saying that to John, like, oh,
- 1:28:16Speaker 3: I guess you are, like, your father. I guess your
- 1:28:18Speaker 3: mom is progress. Because, like, she's not just dissing his father.
- 1:28:21Speaker 3: She's also dissing his mother. Like, I thought she was
- 1:28:24Speaker 3: doing the work she needed to do. So, both her
- 1:28:26Speaker 3: parents getting dissed in one breath. And, like, what he,
- 1:28:30Speaker 3: what is being said there is that, like, you are
- 1:28:34Speaker 3: supposed to be the hope, that you're the hope of
- 1:28:36Speaker 3: the race. Like, you're the, like, you're supposed to be
- 1:28:38Speaker 3: the answer. And, like, he's what is he going to
- 1:28:40Speaker 3: say to that? How is he going to respond? She
- 1:28:42Speaker 3: knows which buttons the press. So the humiliation behind that
- 1:28:45Speaker 3: is like, Now I have to answer, and that's the
- 1:28:47Speaker 3: humiliation that each story of Black excellence is. It's like,
- 1:28:52Speaker 3: my people have been downtrodden, disempowered, systematically not resourced, under-resourced,
- 1:29:00Speaker 3: under-given everything. And so despite all these things, I'm making something,
- 1:29:06Speaker 3: something new is happening for me. And for me to
- 1:29:08Speaker 3: get close to it, for me to just touch it,
- 1:29:11Speaker 3: I can't just simply say, get called one day and
- 1:29:15Speaker 3: have the ring like the last person in front of
- 1:29:17Speaker 3: me i have to snatch it i have to go
- 1:29:19Speaker 3: right back to the base things that they call my
- 1:29:21Speaker 3: people all the time they call us thieves they call
- 1:29:23Speaker 3: us all these things they say that we don't deserve
- 1:29:25Speaker 3: anything that we do they say it's affirmative action they
- 1:29:28Speaker 3: say all these things and the humiliation at the end
- 1:29:30Speaker 3: of it all is you're not you don't deserve it
- 1:29:33Speaker 3: you did all these things you still don't deserve it
- 1:29:35Speaker 3: you gotta snatch it actually right he would have went
- 1:29:37Speaker 3: through all that shit just to be a fucking ring
- 1:29:41Speaker 3: thief just to be a thief my third eye is
- 1:29:43Speaker 3: open on that man but the show is telling us
- 1:29:46Speaker 3: that I love it like none of us thinks the
- 1:29:49Speaker 3: guardian is a good person after that scene like we
- 1:29:52Speaker 3: already was borderline when she was like the regular like
- 1:29:56Speaker 3: microaggression racism of like I don't even see race but
- 1:29:58Speaker 3: it's even like it's like very macro oh yeah but
- 1:30:01Speaker 3: here's a huge diamond yeah exactly it was like that
- 1:30:04Speaker 3: first one was like oh she just clueless she ain't
- 1:30:07Speaker 3: from here she don't know it's racist on earth this
- 1:30:09Speaker 3: time she does know She wasn't clueless.
- 1:30:13Speaker 4: She showed up.
- 1:30:13Speaker 3: As a white lady in the form of a white
- 1:30:15Speaker 3: woman on the purpose.
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: I guess what I'm.
- 1:30:20Speaker 3: Saying is the commentary we could have the excuse is
- 1:30:23Speaker 3: built in.
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: Like, oh, she's an alien. She just saw humans. What
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: the fuck she care about? Does she think we tripping
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: with racism?
- 1:30:32Speaker 3: Like, really?
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: Y'all tripping over this? Then two weeks later, or two
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: episodes later, she using racism. Like, yeah, nigga, you really
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: not him.
- 1:30:39Speaker 3: You really.
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: She knows from the beginning.
- 1:30:43Speaker 3: And I want to... And I'm glad you... mention that
- 1:30:44Speaker 3: because there were some comments before that said you know
- 1:30:47Speaker 3: people were getting on us when we pointed that out
- 1:30:49Speaker 3: and they said well how should she know she's an
- 1:30:51Speaker 3: alien from outer space I'm like that's the bullshit that
- 1:30:53Speaker 3: they're showing you in this show that you will fall
- 1:30:56Speaker 3: for you don't think as is what I said you
- 1:30:58Speaker 3: do not think that this quote alien that studied us
- 1:31:02Speaker 3: inside and out don't know who can fucking pick it
- 1:31:05Speaker 3: up off Wikipedia because apparently the sheriff could pick up
- 1:31:08Speaker 3: shit off Wikipedia about Sinestro about goddamn Sinestro You're telling
- 1:31:12Speaker 3: me that this one, who, as I know, far as
- 1:31:15Speaker 3: I know, has infinite powers and infinite access, could not
- 1:31:18Speaker 3: understand or figure that out? Come on. That's another reason.
- 1:31:21Speaker 3: She came out in the bubble, Doug. Like, what do
- 1:31:23Speaker 3: you mean? That's my thing. They expect for us to do, like,
- 1:31:27Speaker 3: this is also, like, a race thing. They expect for
- 1:31:29Speaker 3: us to do all this due diligence. Like, we're supposed
- 1:31:31Speaker 3: to be steeped in white culture in order to make,
- 1:31:33Speaker 3: get ahead, to do well in their systems that they create.
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: And.
- 1:31:38Speaker 3: Whenever it comes to us, they misstepped. They hung around
- 1:31:43Speaker 3: some Black kids and they thought they could take up
- 1:31:44Speaker 3: the slang. They didn't know they couldn't say it like that.
- 1:31:47Speaker 3: That's just the ooh, ooh, oh, oh. They meant well. No,
- 1:31:51Speaker 3: we had to be steeped for generations just so that
- 1:31:55Speaker 3: we could be safe. And y'all look at whatever we
- 1:31:59Speaker 3: do and are just like, oh, well, what am I
- 1:32:02Speaker 3: supposed to think about that? It is what it is, whatever.
- 1:32:04Speaker 3: And I think for the alien to just come, like
- 1:32:07Speaker 3: you said, she has infinite resources. Why is she not Ultron-ing?
- 1:32:12Speaker 3: Why is she not just hooking up to the whatever
- 1:32:15Speaker 3: satellite and then just absorbing all the information and being like, well, shit.
- 1:32:19Speaker 3: She did already. She, she, she, they petty. I don't know.
- 1:32:22Speaker 3: These are the same people. These are the same people. She's,
- 1:32:25Speaker 3: she's probably the same people who made the man hunters.
- 1:32:27Speaker 3: Like this is, I said before, this is a dirty
- 1:32:30Speaker 3: fucking universe. This is everybody's on dirty work and the
- 1:32:34Speaker 3: levels of the dirty work. are infinite almost so we
- 1:32:37Speaker 3: are seeing that in real time and that's where this
- 1:32:40Speaker 3: show gets real good and where I'm like okay I'm
- 1:32:43Speaker 3: seated because now we're playing around with even from an
- 1:32:47Speaker 3: intergalactic level like fucking we were like oh Marlboro man
- 1:32:50Speaker 3: he's typical white man he was all like Nobody who
- 1:32:53Speaker 3: wasn't born here can be it. He took it another level.
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: Like, I don't even know how.
- 1:32:56Speaker 3: You could be that type. You know what I'm saying? Like,
- 1:32:58Speaker 3: this show is bringing it up several different levels. I
- 1:33:01Speaker 3: also want to note that Hal is not just racist.
- 1:33:04Speaker 3: He's xenophobic. Like, every time he talks about different alien races,
- 1:33:08Speaker 3: he talks about them denigratingly. He's saying it in a joking,
- 1:33:12Speaker 3: jocular manner, but he's saying it to make fun of,
- 1:33:14Speaker 3: punch down on those alien races when that, which to
- 1:33:18Speaker 3: me comes off as like, and you could write it like,
- 1:33:20Speaker 3: please do not write off to me. someone feeling uncomfortable
- 1:33:25Speaker 3: and so they make a bad joke please don't do
- 1:33:29Speaker 3: that for me because what i'm getting from that is
- 1:33:31Speaker 3: that like he's he goes to these planets he's the
- 1:33:34Speaker 3: one human he keeps bringing up i like whenever he's
- 1:33:36Speaker 3: in a car with um john he was like i
- 1:33:39Speaker 3: he's um john is like there's other guardians i mean
- 1:33:42Speaker 3: other lanterns and he's like well i'm the only human
- 1:33:45Speaker 3: so you can't talk to any other freaking, like, they're guardians,
- 1:33:53Speaker 3: lanterns regardless. You can talk to any other lanterns because
- 1:33:56Speaker 3: they're not human. They don't get what you're going through.
- 1:33:59Speaker 3: There's no one else. His response is not only steeped
- 1:34:03Speaker 3: in xenophobia, it's steeped in white manning. That is a
- 1:34:05Speaker 3: white man response that no one else is the, I'm
- 1:34:08Speaker 3: the default. Everybody else is on some other shit. Everybody's weird.
- 1:34:13Speaker 3: Everybody else is weird. Everybody else's culture is weird. Everybody
- 1:34:16Speaker 3: else's movements don't make sense. So I need to speak
- 1:34:19Speaker 3: of them and move on them as if that needs
- 1:34:22Speaker 3: to be changed or fixed or whatever. Colonization, racism, all
- 1:34:26Speaker 3: this stuff.
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: I feel like that makes so much sense because I
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: think if John was the lantern, that job, you're going
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: to end up disliking.
- 1:34:37Speaker 2: It's like cops.
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: You're going to end up disliking the people you police, right?
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: But assuming you got the default correct perspective is a
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: white thing.
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: Like they crazy on these other planets.
- 1:34:48Speaker 3: They embed that. They embed that in, in cop culture. Like,
- 1:34:54Speaker 3: as well, like it is. Yeah.
- 1:34:55Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying.
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: Like he feels, Hal feels like a cop. Like he
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: feels like a police officer to me.
- 1:35:02Speaker 3: Cause he's very much like.
- 1:35:04Speaker 2: And these motherfuckers had to do that shit on the
- 1:35:06Speaker 2: other planet. These backward savages. Like, Jesus, brother.
- 1:35:10Speaker 3: Like, didn't they give you a ring? Like, you don't
- 1:35:14Speaker 3: ever go to the pizza parties with these motherfuckers. It's
- 1:35:16Speaker 3: all just beef all the time. Are you just fake
- 1:35:18Speaker 3: the whole time? Like, you're just fake every time you
- 1:35:20Speaker 3: interact with them. Like, you don't care about anything you
- 1:35:22Speaker 3: say to them. You don't have any actual relationships. You're like,
- 1:35:25Speaker 3: I like the planet one. That's my guy, the planet.
- 1:35:28Speaker 3: The other lanterns, I don't F with them, but the
- 1:35:30Speaker 3: lantern is a planet. That I can barely talk to.
- 1:35:33Speaker 3: That's him. That's my guy. In a very real way,
- 1:35:35Speaker 3: this makes me question, and not in a negative way,
- 1:35:38Speaker 3: in a very, like, thoughtful way, it makes me question
- 1:35:41Speaker 3: the integrity of what it means to be a Green Lantern, right? Right.
- 1:35:45Speaker 3: The green is meaning willpower, right? Right. And there's nothing
- 1:35:48Speaker 3: inherently bad or good about the aspect of willpower. And
- 1:35:51Speaker 3: that's the point. That's the point. And that's why, like,
- 1:35:54Speaker 3: you know, when you see, like, are somebody's good or
- 1:35:55Speaker 3: bad or, you know, are they rogue or not? It's
- 1:35:57Speaker 3: just like, but to whom's perspective? To what perspective?
- 1:36:00Speaker 2: And it's almost like it's not a good system for
- 1:36:03Speaker 2: a police.
- 1:36:03Speaker 3: It's not a good system. It's a good system to
- 1:36:06Speaker 3: enforce people to act in one certain way or another.
- 1:36:09Speaker 2: It's almost as if it's a very arbitrary.
- 1:36:12Speaker 3: The ring just picks motherfuckers and they get all the
- 1:36:14Speaker 3: power on the planet. Yeah.
- 1:36:17Speaker 4: Like Hal said, who does that remind you of?
- 1:36:20Speaker 3: Who does that remind you of? Yeah. So through all
- 1:36:24Speaker 3: of that, what we've been saying, my perspective on should
- 1:36:26Speaker 3: Jon have just stolen Reynaud, that would have been cheap.
- 1:36:28Speaker 3: That would have been cheap move. Yes, it would have
- 1:36:30Speaker 3: been like, you did all this work just to be like, okay,
- 1:36:32Speaker 3: now go steal it like a fucking thief. At the
- 1:36:35Speaker 3: same time... It's.
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: Because the Guardian told him. I just want to let
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: y'all know, my objection... is to.
- 1:36:42Speaker 3: The guardian telling him and then him doing it. If
- 1:36:45Speaker 3: he would have did this shit on his own, I
- 1:36:46Speaker 3: would be like, yeah. And that's why I was like,
- 1:36:48Speaker 3: at the same time, my personal view is still fuck
- 1:36:50Speaker 3: Hal Jordan.
- 1:36:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:36:52Speaker 2: Like, if he would have did it on his own,
- 1:36:53Speaker 2: I would be like, it'd be like that, Hal.
- 1:36:55Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying?
- 1:36:56Speaker 2: Like, you've been acting the ass the whole time anyway.
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: You should have just gave him the ring. But, like,
- 1:37:01Speaker 2: doing it because Dave was like, you not a good nigga.
- 1:37:04Speaker 3: Yes, there we go. Nah, bro.
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: No, I don't think that's a hero.
- 1:37:08Speaker 3: That's not it.
- 1:37:09Speaker 4: That's not it.
- 1:37:11Speaker 5: I gotta say this because, like, I did a, you know,
- 1:37:14Speaker 5: quick review this morning and we're already getting comments saying
- 1:37:17Speaker 5: that we are projecting about the race stuff with the
- 1:37:20Speaker 5: Guardians because they're saying the Guardians.
- 1:37:22Speaker 3: We're projecting with the three Black writers on the show. Okay.
- 1:37:25Speaker 2: Three Black American writers.
- 1:37:27Speaker 3: Okay, no problem. I've said this before.
- 1:37:29Speaker 5: There has never been a time in the history of
- 1:37:31Speaker 5: the universe that a Black person has ever had.
- 1:37:33Speaker 4: To project or, you know, create race things or.
- 1:37:39Speaker 5: played a race card these things are all done for
- 1:37:42Speaker 5: us you know there is never a need for me
- 1:37:45Speaker 5: to ever see race in a situation when it's always
- 1:37:49Speaker 5: there you know i'm not the one who created the
- 1:37:52Speaker 5: idea of race you know like it's all.
- 1:37:54Speaker 3: One race anyway it's all the human race so y'all
- 1:37:58Speaker 3: created the system to make us think that this is
- 1:38:00Speaker 3: a thing and construct in the first place.
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: All analysis is is projection all analysis we're all like
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: taking on some of our life experiences there's whatever white
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: people are reviewing this show they also are projecting like
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: if you're leaving a comment about these people that we're
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: like you looking at my face leaving a comment on
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: youtube you're projecting on the us you don't know me
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: nigga like like this is like we're all doing it
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: so calm the fuck down bro we're enjoying the show
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: to it's not even like we're just shitting on the
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: show cause and that's the thing we're enjoying this we're
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: enjoying the show but we're like these aspects matter too
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: and where are they I want to talk about the
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: tapestry and the paint and the colors that which these
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: artists are painting with. Damon Lindelof has come on this show.
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: I gained a new respect for him coming here because
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: I said, oh, he do think about this shit.
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: He not, it's not, I'm not projecting. The motherfucker himself
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: is like, yeah, that was, y'all right. That's what I did.
- 1:38:58Speaker 3: So yeah, I'm 100% tapped in.
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: If anything, if you upset with this, you not tapped
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: in enough.
- 1:39:05Speaker 3: I'm going to paraphrase Toni Morrison. Like, the whole objective
- 1:39:11Speaker 3: of racism is to derail us from the mission, like
- 1:39:14Speaker 3: what we're actually here to do, what we actually want
- 1:39:16Speaker 3: to do. And so having this conversation time after time
- 1:39:21Speaker 3: with folks, in the comments, in real life, however it
- 1:39:25Speaker 3: shows up, where it comes on to be dismissive of
- 1:39:29Speaker 3: our understanding of what's being projected, like the experiences that
- 1:39:33Speaker 3: we've had, but also the things that have been projected
- 1:39:35Speaker 3: onto us, the things that we have to battle in
- 1:39:37Speaker 3: order to exist in this world. It's just why, like,
- 1:39:43Speaker 3: why is that even necessary? What is it within you?
- 1:39:45Speaker 3: I would, you, the person making these kinds of comments,
- 1:39:49Speaker 3: I think you should question yourself. Just like, just like
- 1:39:51Speaker 3: we're questioning everything that's happening in the story. Why is
- 1:39:53Speaker 3: it important for you to talk to us about why
- 1:39:58Speaker 3: you think that we're doing too much? Why aren't you
- 1:40:02Speaker 3: questioning more? Why is this an opportunity for you to
- 1:40:05Speaker 3: think about, well, I think they're doing a lot, but
- 1:40:09Speaker 3: let me just take a second. and listen to what
- 1:40:11Speaker 3: they're saying. And if I sit and take what they're thinking,
- 1:40:14Speaker 3: what would that actually look like? What would I actually
- 1:40:17Speaker 3: see if I thought it from that point of view?
- 1:40:18Speaker 3: Maybe I can just do my imagination for five minutes today.
- 1:40:22Speaker 3: That's what I'm going to do, which is imagine what they.
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: Said could be a possibility.
- 1:40:27Speaker 3: Maybe I'll do that. And maybe I'll see what happens.
- 1:40:30Speaker 3: But I think for me, it's just like, for all
- 1:40:34Speaker 3: of that, I'm saying this, but I also read the stats. Like,
- 1:40:38Speaker 3: 56% of all the bullshit on the internet is bot farms.
- 1:40:42Speaker 3: So there's a high likelihood that just continuing this, like
- 1:40:46Speaker 3: those little, like what we're getting, they present as human,
- 1:40:49Speaker 3: but that's the whole point of being a bot. Like
- 1:40:51Speaker 3: they're just on a server somewhere, just throwing the same
- 1:40:54Speaker 3: bullshit that they do to every person of color who
- 1:40:56Speaker 3: has any question about race on anything. So yeah, For
- 1:40:59Speaker 3: the real humans out there who are really interested in
- 1:41:03Speaker 3: doing the work, and hopefully you're clicking on this video
- 1:41:05Speaker 3: because you want to hear this perspective, because why else
- 1:41:07Speaker 3: would you even be here if you don't want to
- 1:41:08Speaker 3: hear these perspectives? Then please take a moment, take a breath,
- 1:41:14Speaker 3: consider what if this was true? What if this is
- 1:41:17Speaker 3: actually what's happening here?
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: All alien stories are race stories. white people don't want
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: to write about race directly. So they'd be like, the
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: green Martians ate the white Martians.
- 1:41:26Speaker 3: It's crazy. Everything's the allegory, bro. Fucking Green Lanterns itself.
- 1:41:30Speaker 3: The creation of Jon Stewart as a character is all
- 1:41:34Speaker 3: steeped in this shit. And how can you not see that?
- 1:41:37Speaker 3: It's not even hidden. The part that gets me is
- 1:41:40Speaker 3: not even hidden. And you still question me. I have
- 1:41:43Speaker 3: said it before. The shit that's been happening for over
- 1:41:46Speaker 3: 500 years is still happening live and live in color
- 1:41:48Speaker 3: the same exact way. There is no embellishment. There is no, oh,
- 1:41:52Speaker 3: I could be projecting and making up. It's right there.
- 1:41:54Speaker 3: I don't even have to do anything. It just happens.
- 1:41:56Speaker 3: But no, it's got to be something else. At some point,
- 1:42:00Speaker 3: I stopped saying, oh, do you want to take a
- 1:42:02Speaker 3: step to think about it? There's nothing to think about.
- 1:42:04Speaker 3: It's right there. And that's when... towards what you're saying
- 1:42:07Speaker 3: but that's that's the part where like I get to
- 1:42:09Speaker 3: a point where where you are and then I stop
- 1:42:11Speaker 3: I'm like you just willingly don't want to meet me
- 1:42:13Speaker 3: there you willingly don't want to go across the bridge
- 1:42:16Speaker 3: you willingly don't want to see the truth because it's
- 1:42:19Speaker 3: never been hidden from you in the first place I
- 1:42:21Speaker 3: for me where I'm sitting at is that like I
- 1:42:23Speaker 3: just don't have the energy to go back and forth
- 1:42:26Speaker 3: for long I'm gonna be like open your mind, do
- 1:42:30Speaker 3: what you're going to do. Don't open your mind, do
- 1:42:32Speaker 3: what you're going to do. That's not my tea. That's me.
- 1:42:34Speaker 3: But I do want to say for the 56% remark
- 1:42:37Speaker 3: as well, I really do hope that we're engaging with
- 1:42:42Speaker 3: fellow humans who are willing to like, please help us
- 1:42:46Speaker 3: beat the 56%. Please be another voice on the internet
- 1:42:49Speaker 3: that is human, that is like working with us against
- 1:42:53Speaker 3: all of that tech BS stuff. Like I don't, I
- 1:42:57Speaker 3: would feel so much better knowing a real human being
- 1:43:00Speaker 3: sat behind just a modicum of thoughts and consideration than
- 1:43:06Speaker 3: engaging with something and being like, All this time, it's
- 1:43:09Speaker 3: been a fucking bot. It's been a bot, which unfortunately
- 1:43:12Speaker 3: is the name of the game on the internet right now.
- 1:43:14Speaker 3: Most of the time, and sometimes you can really tell
- 1:43:16Speaker 3: very easily, but most of the time, it's just repeated, regurgitated... racist,
- 1:43:21Speaker 3: ridiculous thought that it's just meant to derail. And that,
- 1:43:25Speaker 3: that goes back to your original point with the, with
- 1:43:26Speaker 3: the Toni Morrison summarization, just like we cannot be derailed
- 1:43:31Speaker 3: from our real truth and our real purpose of why
- 1:43:32Speaker 3: we're trying to, what we're trying to do. And then
- 1:43:34Speaker 3: just like for the real humans who are engaging with
- 1:43:37Speaker 3: this and having, having difficulty, the real in good, in
- 1:43:41Speaker 3: good faith humans who are still having difficulty understanding this
- 1:43:45Speaker 3: perspective and, Just a reminder that everything in the colonized
- 1:43:49Speaker 3: world is catered to whiteness, like hair care, all the basics,
- 1:43:54Speaker 3: all the basics, hair care, skin care, health care, all
- 1:43:58Speaker 3: the basics are catered to whiteness. And that includes... you know,
- 1:44:02Speaker 3: day to day, everyday stuff. So like when you listen
- 1:44:05Speaker 3: to a rap song or when we watch, um, you know, there,
- 1:44:09Speaker 3: there are other, there are other films, like as, as
- 1:44:12Speaker 3: the Disney universe has opened up to exploring other cultures,
- 1:44:16Speaker 3: there are things that are not explained that are culturally
- 1:44:19Speaker 3: relevant to whatever culture is being explored that I might
- 1:44:22Speaker 3: watch and see, oh, this is, yeah, this is funny or, oh,
- 1:44:24Speaker 3: I get it, but I'm not getting the full depth
- 1:44:26Speaker 3: of it. And someone from that culture is understands the
- 1:44:29Speaker 3: full depth. And for Black folks in the U.S., the
- 1:44:33Speaker 3: way that we engage and understand how we are treated, racism, microaggressions,
- 1:44:38Speaker 3: you know, you're not going to get every nuance. So
- 1:44:41Speaker 3: we sit here and we spend time to say, hey,
- 1:44:43Speaker 3: this is how it relates to real life and this
- 1:44:45Speaker 3: is what it means and this is what it is.
- 1:44:47Speaker 3: you know, to say, oh, well, I'm white and I
- 1:44:51Speaker 3: don't see it and I don't understand it. And I
- 1:44:53Speaker 3: understand everything because everything is for me. And so if
- 1:44:55Speaker 3: this is a moment where something where I don't understand,
- 1:44:58Speaker 3: then it must not be real and it must not exist.
- 1:45:02Speaker 3: I think it's just important to take a moment to
- 1:45:04Speaker 3: understand that that infiltrates everything. everything that's in everything so
- 1:45:08Speaker 3: it would the likelihood would be that you would watch
- 1:45:12Speaker 3: you know five black people talk about blackness talk about
- 1:45:16Speaker 3: how a toxic white society engages with us how we
- 1:45:19Speaker 3: engage with the fact it would make sense that you
- 1:45:21Speaker 3: would look and say i've never considered any of that
- 1:45:24Speaker 3: shit that's exactly where you should be that's exactly what
- 1:45:29Speaker 3: you should feel you know um And that's all I
- 1:45:32Speaker 3: have to say to white people today. But I think
- 1:45:36Speaker 3: that that's really important. And that goes for non-Black people
- 1:45:38Speaker 3: of color as well, as somebody who has been blessed
- 1:45:41Speaker 3: to be in community with mostly Black and non-Black POC.
- 1:45:46Speaker 3: I will say that my experience, especially during the height
- 1:45:52Speaker 3: of the pandemic, during the awakening post the murder of
- 1:45:56Speaker 3: George Floyd, My experience has been mostly with non-Black POC saying,
- 1:46:01Speaker 3: oh my gosh, I didn't know it was like that.
- 1:46:02Speaker 3: But we went to college together. You've known me my
- 1:46:05Speaker 3: whole life. But it's because you have also bought into
- 1:46:07Speaker 3: the delusion that my experience is invalid and your Black
- 1:46:11Speaker 3: friends who you claim to love have been exaggerating and
- 1:46:14Speaker 3: you didn't believe me until someone else told you or
- 1:46:16Speaker 3: you had to sit home and watch it or whatever.
- 1:46:18Speaker 3: So I just want to... Say that the discomfort that
- 1:46:21Speaker 3: you're feeling, the wait, what? Wait, what are they saying?
- 1:46:24Speaker 3: That's exactly how you should feel. And to Portia's point,
- 1:46:27Speaker 3: consider that the five of us who did not write
- 1:46:32Speaker 3: a script to do this and are all making similar points,
- 1:46:36Speaker 3: the five of us know what we're talking about as
- 1:46:40Speaker 3: it relates to how we experience the world, how we're treated,
- 1:46:43Speaker 3: and what white people have been doing in the colonized
- 1:46:46Speaker 3: world since the beginning of the colonized world. Wow.
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:46:51Speaker 4: I don't think there could be much more said.
- 1:46:55Speaker 5: I did have a couple quick Easter eggs that I
- 1:46:57Speaker 5: noticed in this episode. Hector Hammond, the person that the
- 1:47:02Speaker 5: engineer is acting like he is, is a big DC
- 1:47:06Speaker 5: Green Lantern villain. We see him in the Ryan Reynolds movie.
- 1:47:11Speaker 5: He's in it, and then at the end, he starts
- 1:47:13Speaker 5: to get his enlarged giant head, which is his trademark
- 1:47:17Speaker 5: of having this giant brain and all that.
- 1:47:19Speaker 3: I don't think we're going to see him at all
- 1:47:21Speaker 3: in this universe, which... Maybe not, but that is the
- 1:47:24Speaker 3: backdoor to Gorilla Grodd. Because the way he gets his
- 1:47:28Speaker 3: powers is through that same meteor that Gorilla Grodd touches. And...
- 1:47:32Speaker 3: did not notice Hector Hector actually like basically stands in
- 1:47:36Speaker 3: front of the damn thing and kind of absorbs the
- 1:47:38Speaker 3: radiation and that's how he gets his powers and shit
- 1:47:40Speaker 3: so and I'm and I'm paraphrasing I'm sure it's a
- 1:47:43Speaker 3: little bit more to me but that's what happens.
- 1:47:44Speaker 5: That's so amazing they are doing a Grodd spin off
- 1:47:47Speaker 5: yes they are and that's what I'm saying why I'm.
- 1:47:49Speaker 3: Saying it's a backdoor to it because it's it's the
- 1:47:51Speaker 3: same meteor so that Grodd gets his powers so maybe
- 1:47:54Speaker 3: maybe not it kind of doesn't matter at this point
- 1:47:56Speaker 3: but at least we see that there's potential connecting tissue
- 1:47:59Speaker 3: with the Gorilla Grodd show.
- 1:48:01Speaker 5: This one I didn't know until I went on to Reddit.
- 1:48:04Speaker 5: Might be a big reach, but also might be right
- 1:48:06Speaker 5: on point. Issue 185 of Green Lantern is when Jon
- 1:48:12Speaker 5: Stewart first debuts and it's his origin story. So when
- 1:48:15Speaker 5: Hal says, you know, 185 for his weight, that, you know,
- 1:48:19Speaker 5: could be... a tie into that.
- 1:48:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:48:22Speaker 3: This is less of a Easter egg and more of
- 1:48:23Speaker 3: just like a similarity that I saw. We were talking
- 1:48:26Speaker 3: about like the darkness weapons. It just reminded me a
- 1:48:28Speaker 3: lot of like Death Eaters and Harry Potter and how
- 1:48:30Speaker 3: they move. And it's all darkness and smoke and can't eat.
- 1:48:33Speaker 3: And like I said, the whole Black Lantern theory that,
- 1:48:36Speaker 3: you know, this is about death. It just kind of
- 1:48:38Speaker 3: all and it could just be a coincidence, but it
- 1:48:40Speaker 3: all connected. It's HBO, too. So it's the same. They're
- 1:48:42Speaker 3: saying the same people. Parent company. Yeah. So I had
- 1:48:46Speaker 3: a question about, this is the Easter, it's an Easter egg,
- 1:48:49Speaker 3: but I don't know what the answer is where they
- 1:48:51Speaker 3: said that like the, whenever he hit the.
- 1:48:53Speaker 4: Switch with his foot, great movie.
- 1:48:55Speaker 3: Yeah. And like, which movie was that? Indiana Jones. Thank you.
- 1:49:00Speaker 3: Indiana Jones.
- 1:49:01Speaker 4: I thought it was Indiana Jones.
- 1:49:03Speaker 5: People said set it off because they said set it
- 1:49:05Speaker 5: off right then, but I think that was like black people.
- 1:49:10Speaker 3: I saw that too, man. I was like, is this
- 1:49:14Speaker 3: a set it off reference? But that speaks to not being,
- 1:49:17Speaker 3: not knowing, you know what I'm saying? The nuances of
- 1:49:21Speaker 3: this film culture. So it was what? Indiana Jones?
- 1:49:24Speaker 2: How I set it off?
- 1:49:27Speaker 3: That's what I'm saying.
- 1:49:28Speaker 4: And for Hal to say good movie, that was impressive.
- 1:49:31Speaker 3: I was like, yeah.
- 1:49:32Speaker 2: You know what? I'm his judge, you white man.
- 1:49:34Speaker 3: He watched the Cosby show. He watched the Cosby show.
- 1:49:36Speaker 2: Everybody wanted the Cosby show.
- 1:49:38Speaker 5: Like I said, we call Hal racist, but Hal's definitely
- 1:49:41Speaker 5: racist in the racism that I grew up with.
- 1:49:44Speaker 4: Like where I grew up, like.
- 1:49:45Speaker 5: Some of my best friend's parents, you know, I talked
- 1:49:47Speaker 5: about last week, they were a bit racist, you know,
- 1:49:49Speaker 5: which is.
- 1:49:49Speaker 3: How it was. You know what?
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: Hal reminds me of is the white dude that played
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: basketball at the black basketball court.
- 1:49:57Speaker 3: Oh, God. Yeah.
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: Even his whole thing about being the only human lantern.
- 1:50:02Speaker 2: Is very giving. If you talk to those white dudes,
- 1:50:05Speaker 2: they're cool.
- 1:50:05Speaker 3: They feel like they something.
- 1:50:06Speaker 2: They cooler than the vast majority of white dudes. Don't
- 1:50:10Speaker 2: get me wrong.
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: I love a basketball playing white boy. They are, listen,
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: salt of the earth. But- They always overstep into like,
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: I know what.
- 1:50:19Speaker 3: It's like, man.
- 1:50:20Speaker 2: I've been the only white person. I was the minority.
- 1:50:23Speaker 2: You're like, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 1:50:25Speaker 3: They are constant habitual line steppers. And it's like, you
- 1:50:28Speaker 3: are not part of this.
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: And that's why we say, who gonna check the white
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: boy to your face?
- 1:50:35Speaker 2: It's because you do shit like this.
- 1:50:38Speaker 5: To disrespect the jazz, bro, I lost it.
- 1:50:40Speaker 4: I was like, this nigga here.
- 1:50:43Speaker 3: But that, again, in terms of Easter eggs or callbacks
- 1:50:47Speaker 3: or even references, the whole jazz thing, with it being
- 1:50:50Speaker 3: Hal in the room, I thought of Hal 3000. I
- 1:50:52Speaker 3: thought of the fact of, you know, you being in
- 1:50:55Speaker 3: whatever the space, obviously, right? Like you just in this...
- 1:50:58Speaker 3: room that looks very futuristic very alien like and then
- 1:51:02Speaker 3: you're playing the jazz music because in every and they've
- 1:51:04Speaker 3: been talking about movies throughout this episode and references of
- 1:51:07Speaker 3: movies maybe you know again just another reference of like
- 1:51:10Speaker 3: you know when you're in a room like that with
- 1:51:11Speaker 3: that type of music playing it's all bad.
- 1:51:13Speaker 2: So hilarious hilarious delivery by the.
- 1:51:17Speaker 5: Way hilarious And especially because it was like elevator music jazz,
- 1:51:20Speaker 5: so I felt it.
- 1:51:21Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:51:21Speaker 5: Because I can't stand that shit either.
- 1:51:22Speaker 3: It wasn't my shit. It wasn't my shit.
- 1:51:24Speaker 4: That shit's whack as fuck.
- 1:51:25Speaker 2: I hate that. The fact that it denotated.
- 1:51:28Speaker 4: It was an R & B song. It was a jazz... Yeah.
- 1:51:32Speaker 3: It was a weird, like, creepy cover. Yeah.
- 1:51:34Speaker 2: The fact that.
- 1:51:35Speaker 3: denoted ominousness to him.
- 1:51:37Speaker 2: It's so funny to me.
- 1:51:39Speaker 4: Racism.
- 1:51:39Speaker 2: I was like, what? Like, when I'm in an elevator
- 1:51:43Speaker 2: and that shit is on, I'm not like, oh, one
- 1:51:45Speaker 2: of these.
- 1:51:46Speaker 3: But he's like, black people music. Right, right. At least it.
- 1:51:49Speaker 2: Wasn't hip hop.
- 1:51:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:51:51Speaker 3: I think it would have ran out the room.
- 1:51:56Speaker 2: This their kind of music, Junior?
- 1:51:58Speaker 3: You like this? As we close out, just about just,
- 1:52:01Speaker 3: you know, what we're going to see the next episode,
- 1:52:03Speaker 3: even just the rest of this series. um the whole
- 1:52:07Speaker 3: i mean just starting on the most first point the
- 1:52:09Speaker 3: whole manhunter zoe thing um she's not dead no yeah yeah.
- 1:52:14Speaker 2: Yeah well according to them he's not.
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: Recording that yeah john let us know because he was
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: he was tripping over his parents but he didn't give
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: a fuck i.
- 1:52:25Speaker 2: Think it's up there man i was like whoa that
- 1:52:27Speaker 2: was that what.
- 1:52:29Speaker 3: That's one of my, that's one of my thoughts, too,
- 1:52:31Speaker 3: is that I think we're going to see, or it's
- 1:52:33Speaker 3: possible that we're going to see more, because we got
- 1:52:35Speaker 3: more of, I think the Sinestro scene with Hal is a, like,
- 1:52:43Speaker 3: basically foretelling us seeing something similar with... Zoe and John, because, like,
- 1:52:51Speaker 3: we saw a portion of Hal and Sinestro's conversation at
- 1:52:56Speaker 3: the end of episode two, and I feel like we
- 1:52:57Speaker 3: only saw a portion of Zoe and John's conversation in
- 1:53:01Speaker 3: this episode. We're going to end up seeing more of
- 1:53:03Speaker 3: what they just talked about in that discussion. I think
- 1:53:06Speaker 3: that the recording being played shows us that, like, Like,
- 1:53:11Speaker 3: Hector says it's the Manhunter who had the, like, recordings happening.
- 1:53:17Speaker 3: But he's... Because he's saying that... He said it's Makin.
- 1:53:19Speaker 3: He said Makin's the Manhunter. I don't think that the
- 1:53:21Speaker 3: recordings happening is on Zoe's behalf. I think it's just
- 1:53:24Speaker 3: solely Makin doing all that. So I don't know how much...
- 1:53:27Speaker 3: How aware she is of, like... if her conversation with
- 1:53:31Speaker 3: John was recorded. Because she does say to him, if
- 1:53:35Speaker 3: I tell you everything, then you're going to die, and
- 1:53:38Speaker 3: I don't want you to die, basically. So I think
- 1:53:42Speaker 3: we're going to see more of that conversation come up
- 1:53:44Speaker 3: in some way. I don't know if it's going to
- 1:53:45Speaker 3: be another slip of the recording happening, an audio version
- 1:53:49Speaker 3: of it, or we're going to actually get a flashback
- 1:53:50Speaker 3: to that scene, but I think we're going to see
- 1:53:52Speaker 3: more of why.
- 1:53:54Speaker 3: John believes that she's the Manhunter and why he believes
- 1:53:59Speaker 3: that she also like made it through the satellite coming
- 1:54:03Speaker 3: for her truck. So that'll be interesting.
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: I have theories about that, too. It might be a
- 1:54:09Speaker 1: hot take and I might be wrong. But if I'm wrong,
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: it's so crazy.
- 1:54:13Speaker 2: Nobody's going to remember I was wrong.
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: But if I'm right, it's so crazy. Everybody's like, damn,
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: this motherfucker smart. So here's my theory. What if the
- 1:54:22Speaker 1: Manhunter is the Guardian and Zoe?
- 1:54:25Speaker 3: I thought that earlier today, yo. I thought that, actually. Okay,
- 1:54:29Speaker 3: so I'm not crazy. I thought that earlier.
- 1:54:31Speaker 2: Why y'all didn't say it? Was y'all also feeling like
- 1:54:35Speaker 2: it's crazy?
- 1:54:36Speaker 3: We haven't seen him in the same room yet.
- 1:54:38Speaker 5: I was trying to put it all together. It's like,
- 1:54:41Speaker 5: the Manhunter can be anyone. And the Manhunter, the one
- 1:54:46Speaker 5: thing that bugs me is how they... I mean, not
- 1:54:49Speaker 5: the Manhunter Guardian. When they appeared in Jon's room, how
- 1:54:52Speaker 5: are they doing that shit?
- 1:54:53Speaker 3: You know, like, are they.
- 1:54:55Speaker 4: invisible and then they're appearing or.
- 1:54:57Speaker 3: They don't like circle or anything that half appears or
- 1:54:59Speaker 3: something that.
- 1:55:00Speaker 6: Makes them like the man hunters also have psychic powers
- 1:55:03Speaker 6: in the in the comics i don't know if they
- 1:55:05Speaker 6: don't have it in this show but they can project
- 1:55:08Speaker 6: themselves into your brain too and the reason i that
- 1:55:12Speaker 6: is interesting to me is because they're both in the
- 1:55:16Speaker 6: form of these.
- 1:55:16Speaker 2: Older women that are manipulating.
- 1:55:18Speaker 7: John um he's their favorite playboy toy yeah and he
- 1:55:23Speaker 7: and Um, and then it would make the sex stuff
- 1:55:27Speaker 7: feel different to me.
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: Cause it's like, Oh no, John kind of knows it ain't,
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: it's something's up, but he don't want to reveal that
- 1:55:34Speaker 1: he knows something's up. Even the way they got the
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: recording is kind of like, okay, so like, Who was
- 1:55:40Speaker 1: in that room first?
- 1:55:41Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 1:55:42Speaker 1: Because other people was in that room with you. They
- 1:55:45Speaker 1: could have left a recording device.
- 1:55:47Speaker 2: They could already set something up. It's just, I don't know.
- 1:55:49Speaker 3: It could.
- 1:55:50Speaker 1: That was a small thing. I'll run through a couple
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: quick more things real quick. When the Guardian asked, and
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: what did they talk about? I feel like she was
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: just testing to see if John would tell her.
- 1:56:04Speaker 3: They both are testing him.
- 1:56:06Speaker 2: I think she knows and wanted to know is how
- 1:56:09Speaker 2: close are you with Hal? Is Hal telling you that
- 1:56:11Speaker 2: we shady? Oh, he hasn't really revealed that you can't
- 1:56:13Speaker 2: trust us?
- 1:56:14Speaker 3: Cool.
- 1:56:15Speaker 2: You're still our perfect fucking.
- 1:56:17Speaker 3: Like- Negro.
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: We're going to use you. Now I'm going to put
- 1:56:21Speaker 1: the vice on you. I actually love the detective work
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: between Hal and John. Like that's a true detective thing.
- 1:56:27Speaker 1: Cause they make, they always make the two leads hate
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: each other. And then they sit down for five minutes
- 1:56:31Speaker 1: and they do detect. And you'd be like, these niggas cooking.
- 1:56:34Speaker 2: Oh my God. I thought they was, I thought these
- 1:56:36Speaker 2: motherfuckers didn't know what they was doing. They was like, yes,
- 1:56:39Speaker 2: that's called the weenie. And that's why the four guard
- 1:56:40Speaker 2: towers do this. I was like, oh shit. So that
- 1:56:43Speaker 2: was actually a cool moment. I love the special effect
- 1:56:45Speaker 2: of the digger.
- 1:56:46Speaker 3: I loved it. Yes, that was fire.
- 1:56:49Speaker 1: Anytime this show gives us like a, nah, we got
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: a nice little budget over here.
- 1:56:54Speaker 3: You know what I mean? I like that. I liken
- 1:56:57Speaker 3: it to how Game of Thrones or really House of
- 1:56:59Speaker 3: Dragons have done with the dragons where it's like they
- 1:57:02Speaker 3: don't overplay that hand And they had made a point
- 1:57:05Speaker 3: to mention that they didn't want to overplay it and
- 1:57:06Speaker 3: cheapen it, right? Yes. We don't see, besides how, like,
- 1:57:10Speaker 3: doing shit like constructing money, we don't really see, like,
- 1:57:12Speaker 3: stuff that's too, like, basic being done. It's, like, mundane. It's, like,
- 1:57:16Speaker 3: when it happens, it happens for a really expressed purpose,
- 1:57:19Speaker 3: and it has meaning behind it, and it carries weight.
- 1:57:22Speaker 2: You know, literal secrecy.
- 1:57:23Speaker 3: So to see that, and again, the way that John
- 1:57:26Speaker 3: does it, where it's from the inside out, and it's
- 1:57:28Speaker 3: very meticulous, and it's very solid and stoic and all
- 1:57:31Speaker 3: this other stuff, like... And then, again, just the effects
- 1:57:34Speaker 3: themselves to be so good. It's just nice. Not only
- 1:57:37Speaker 3: does it not cheapen the idea of the Green Lantern
- 1:57:40Speaker 3: and its powers, it also, like, to me, elevates the
- 1:57:42Speaker 3: series because it's not just like, oh, look at this
- 1:57:44Speaker 3: cool shit that we're doing.
- 1:57:45Speaker 2: Like, it's not like that all the time.
- 1:57:46Speaker 3: They're not forcing, like, a space battle into every episode
- 1:57:49Speaker 3: just because they're like, this is what people can't, like,
- 1:57:51Speaker 3: they're using it practically. Correct.
- 1:57:53Speaker 2: But I love the way that effect looked. It looked great.
- 1:57:56Speaker 1: And then John lost his concentration when Hal brings up
- 1:57:59Speaker 1: his mother, Don.
- 1:58:00Speaker 3: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
- 1:58:01Speaker 1: Which, you know, I mean, I don't know how many
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: times the show can lean toward it. Like we're saying
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: mommy issues, but also like.
- 1:58:07Speaker 3: Like, like, Everybody's mom can't be Martha.
- 1:58:11Speaker 5: But Hal makes that great point, too. He's like, that
- 1:58:14Speaker 5: is standard superhero origin story.
- 1:58:17Speaker 3: The parents try to die. We're already breaking that fourth wall.
- 1:58:19Speaker 3: He did that several times this episode. He's like, it's
- 1:58:22Speaker 3: kind of weird your mama alive, if we be honest.
- 1:58:24Speaker 3: You really had to earn the ring. Let's go in
- 1:58:27Speaker 3: here and get your mama killed from a laser. That's
- 1:58:29Speaker 3: part of the hazing process. Then I'm going to give
- 1:58:31Speaker 3: you the ring.
- 1:58:31Speaker 4: I'm going to leave.
- 1:58:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:58:33Speaker 1: And then lastly is the, the order versus chaos of
- 1:58:37Speaker 1: it all. Cause I like how much the guardians are
- 1:58:40Speaker 1: trying to place order on the chaotic universe.
- 1:58:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:58:43Speaker 2: And you got to get dirty to do it. Cause
- 1:58:45Speaker 2: you're not.
- 1:58:45Speaker 1: Letting things take their natural course. So of course them
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: niggas gotta be dirty, man. You can't imply order on life.
- 1:58:52Speaker 1: Life is by itself is too random. And so the
- 1:58:57Speaker 1: arrogance of any group that, to think we know what's
- 1:59:01Speaker 1: best for the planet. We give one person a ring
- 1:59:04Speaker 1: and then tell them how to go police. Their planet
- 1:59:06Speaker 1: is insanity.
- 1:59:07Speaker 3: And so they have to be evil at the end
- 1:59:10Speaker 3: of the day.
- 1:59:10Speaker 2: It's just no way they get to be good people.
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: And I love that because I feel like of what
- 1:59:16Speaker 1: I know, cause I'm not as deep in the comics
- 1:59:18Speaker 1: as y'all were with DC, but, of what I know
- 1:59:21Speaker 1: from like Justice League and stuff, it always kind.
- 1:59:23Speaker 2: Of felt like, yeah, it always kind of felt like, yeah.
- 1:59:26Speaker 1: The Guardians are good because they're gave people the rings
- 1:59:29Speaker 1: and they're, they want the good things.
- 1:59:31Speaker 2: And don't we like Hal? Don't we like John?
- 1:59:34Speaker 1: I prefer this version because it's so much more adult
- 1:59:38Speaker 1: and complicated and accurate than just good versus evil. The
- 1:59:42Speaker 1: same way I prefer like the acolyte version of the Jedi.
- 1:59:45Speaker 1: I like, I like the, hey man, motherfuckers that want
- 1:59:49Speaker 1: to impose.
- 1:59:50Speaker 2: Order on the universe under the guise of good are
- 1:59:53Speaker 2: very rarely good.
- 1:59:55Speaker 3: They're always a problem. The thought that's just left off
- 1:59:59Speaker 3: of my brain is around this idea of we have
- 2:00:03Speaker 3: been able to get here in this, like, the nuance,
- 2:00:06Speaker 3: the grayness. Like, because we, like, if we think about
- 2:00:10Speaker 3: where we have been in superhero depictions for, like, as
- 2:00:14Speaker 3: Tati was saying, like, the last 20 years, 30 years,
- 2:00:16Speaker 3: when Blade was the thing, when Batman Forever came out, whenever, like, the, um...
- 2:00:21Speaker 3: whatever west adam west's version of things came out right
- 2:00:25Speaker 3: it's been so many years of us getting that basic
- 2:00:29Speaker 3: black white this is what a superhero is this is
- 2:00:31Speaker 3: what like and that's all giving us been giving us
- 2:00:34Speaker 3: narratives of like how to be people how to be
- 2:00:36Speaker 3: heralded as good people how to have like star power
- 2:00:40Speaker 3: what does it take to be like a version of
- 2:00:43Speaker 3: someone that you actually can respect for yourself that other
- 2:00:46Speaker 3: people respect as well. And over time, we've gotten to
- 2:00:49Speaker 3: the place now where we can have these more nuanced,
- 2:00:51Speaker 3: more thoughtful, more considerate. It actually is pulling us and
- 2:00:54Speaker 3: pushing us into conversations that we've needed to have and
- 2:00:58Speaker 3: we just haven't had the spell for. So I think
- 2:01:00Speaker 3: Lanterns is kind of like the peak of of superhero
- 2:01:05Speaker 3: storytelling in a way that we have not... We've been
- 2:01:08Speaker 3: seeing hits and misses for the past few years, fumbles
- 2:01:11Speaker 3: and stuff that have been happening from Marvel to DC
- 2:01:15Speaker 3: to independent creators. We've been seeing so many fits and
- 2:01:17Speaker 3: starts with this. So I think one of the reasons
- 2:01:20Speaker 3: why Lanterns is having the reaction it's having from the
- 2:01:23Speaker 3: audience is that we're getting so much of what it's taken...
- 2:01:28Speaker 3: years of storytelling for us to get to with the
- 2:01:33Speaker 3: budget and the means and the creators and the storytelling
- 2:01:37Speaker 3: and the beings and the creators who actually get us there.
- 2:01:41Speaker 3: So I really just appreciate that. And I think that
- 2:01:45Speaker 3: And having the people here in this room to be
- 2:01:49Speaker 3: able to talk about this in this way, I'm actually
- 2:01:53Speaker 3: feeling very grateful that this is an experience that I
- 2:01:56Speaker 3: get to have and that we get to share this
- 2:01:58Speaker 3: out with other people and engage with them. Because there
- 2:02:01Speaker 3: are times where I've looked at the stories and been like,
- 2:02:03Speaker 3: and I can still do it to this day. I'm
- 2:02:05Speaker 3: not going to pick up this story. I'm not going
- 2:02:07Speaker 3: to watch this one. It is what it is. Pick
- 2:02:09Speaker 3: and choose. this is a very special project and it
- 2:02:12Speaker 3: feels like it and just our ability to talk about
- 2:02:14Speaker 3: it this way and for so long and people still
- 2:02:17Speaker 3: want to engage with us about it. Like it just,
- 2:02:19Speaker 3: it feels very special and I really appreciate that. All right.
- 2:02:24Speaker 5: I think there we do need to wrap this up though. Janicia,
- 2:02:29Speaker 5: please let the people know where they can find you at.
- 2:02:32Speaker 3: Hey, y'all can still find me right now for now
- 2:02:35Speaker 3: at Tea with Queen and Jay. I'm on Patreon mostly,
- 2:02:38Speaker 3: Tea with Queen and Jay podcast, wherever you listen to podcasts,
- 2:02:43Speaker 3: that's where I'm at. I'm on social media mostly as myself,
- 2:02:46Speaker 3: at Janicia F. J-A-N-I-C-I-A and then the letter F. And
- 2:02:51Speaker 3: if you hit me up at T with QJ, I'm
- 2:02:54Speaker 3: there as well, but mainly at my main page. So yeah,
- 2:02:57Speaker 3: that's where I'm at. And thank y'all so much for
- 2:02:58Speaker 3: having me. I watched all the previous reviews that y'all
- 2:03:01Speaker 3: did of this show and the conversations are so... They're
- 2:03:07Speaker 3: just so dynamic. I really, congratulations on 10K. I'm so,
- 2:03:11Speaker 3: you know, impressed would imply that like, I didn't expect
- 2:03:16Speaker 3: this from you guys, but like, I'm just really, I'm
- 2:03:20Speaker 3: blessed to be in community with y'all and just what
- 2:03:22Speaker 3: you've been doing, the work that you do is just brilliant.
- 2:03:25Speaker 3: So shout out to y'all.
- 2:03:26Speaker 5: Now, I want to personally thank you as well, Janisha,
- 2:03:29Speaker 5: because you have definitely been a driving force in my
- 2:03:33Speaker 5: personal growth and recognizing when I'm fucking up And, you know,
- 2:03:37Speaker 5: like you.
- 2:03:37Speaker 3: Said, why did you say that?
- 2:03:43Speaker 5: And, you know, I've learned, I won't say regretted, you know,
- 2:03:47Speaker 5: I've like learned, you know, I shouldn't have said that
- 2:03:50Speaker 5: and why I shouldn't have said it. And, you know,
- 2:03:53Speaker 5: I want to thank you for helping me, you know,
- 2:03:55Speaker 5: get to see through those blind spots that I had.
- 2:03:59Speaker 3: Thanks for that. Thanks for saying that out loud. I
- 2:04:01Speaker 3: really appreciate it. And it, it does like, it does, um,
- 2:04:06Speaker 3: It means something to say that out loud because we
- 2:04:08Speaker 3: all know that people have had that experience with all
- 2:04:11Speaker 3: of us and have hesitated to say that out loud.
- 2:04:13Speaker 3: So thank you for... Oh, no.
- 2:04:15Speaker 4: That's the funny thing because it caught me up a
- 2:04:17Speaker 4: couple weeks ago.
- 2:04:18Speaker 5: Somebody in the comments said something where they were like,
- 2:04:21Speaker 5: you know, John, I think they were complaining about John
- 2:04:23Speaker 5: or Hal. And I wanted to be like, nigga, if
- 2:04:26Speaker 5: you'd known me four years ago, I would have.
- 2:04:28Speaker 4: Said shit out my mouth that way. I had you like,
- 2:04:31Speaker 4: fuck Ben.
- 2:04:32Speaker 5: You know, and it's like, we don't allow people to
- 2:04:34Speaker 5: grow and we don't allow people. There's a lot of the,
- 2:04:38Speaker 5: especially people who raised on this internet. They don't, they,
- 2:04:40Speaker 5: because they've said things on the internet, they're like, they
- 2:04:43Speaker 5: feel like they're stuck with it. You know, they can't
- 2:04:45Speaker 5: ever say, I was wrong.
- 2:04:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:04:48Speaker 4: And so I'm the first to be like, yo, I
- 2:04:51Speaker 4: was fucking wrong. I've grown.
- 2:04:53Speaker 5: Like, this show has helped me grow so much. You know, Tatiana,
- 2:04:56Speaker 5: Genesia Rodgers, You know, Portia, everyone here has helped me
- 2:04:59Speaker 5: grow so much. And if you looked at, I mean,
- 2:05:02Speaker 5: you can go back and listen to the shit I said,
- 2:05:05Speaker 5: you know, when we started this show.
- 2:05:06Speaker 4: And a lot of it is like.
- 2:05:07Speaker 3: Oh, fuck.
- 2:05:09Speaker 4: You know, I'm sitting there like, fuck, man, you were
- 2:05:11Speaker 4: an idiot. You know, like, what were you thinking?
- 2:05:13Speaker 2: Are you listening, Stephen A. Smith?
- 2:05:15Speaker 3: Are you listening?
- 2:05:16Speaker 2: Can y'all send this clip to him real quick?
- 2:05:19Speaker 3: That's all you gotta say. It's been over already. It's awful.
- 2:05:23Speaker 5: A lot of y'all niggas like, As a.
- 2:05:27Speaker 3: Creative, it's such a unique, as a creative and then
- 2:05:30Speaker 3: just people who have been on the internet, it's really
- 2:05:33Speaker 3: a blessing to be able to look back and see
- 2:05:36Speaker 3: how far you've come. Because that's a part of why
- 2:05:38Speaker 3: people forget who they used to be. We have it
- 2:05:41Speaker 3: on tape who we used to be. We have it on,
- 2:05:43Speaker 3: you know, it's on the socials, the bullshit we were
- 2:05:45Speaker 3: saying if we forgot to delete that shit. So it's important.
- 2:05:49Speaker 3: I've grown so much just from like listening back to
- 2:05:51Speaker 3: the things that I've said on my podcast, on this podcast.
- 2:05:54Speaker 3: You know, I also sounded ridiculous. Not like you, because
- 2:05:57Speaker 3: I'm not a cishet man. But I have also said
- 2:06:01Speaker 3: ridiculous things. You know, things that I can never take
- 2:06:04Speaker 3: back because it's on tape. All I can do is
- 2:06:06Speaker 3: be a better nigga. And that's what we should all
- 2:06:09Speaker 3: be striving to do. You know what I'm saying? Is
- 2:06:11Speaker 3: to be better niggas. Gender neutral, race neutral. Be better niggas.
- 2:06:15Speaker 2: I love that rainbow.
- 2:06:16Speaker 3: Put that on a shirt.
- 2:06:16Speaker 4: Be better niggas, okay?
- 2:06:18Speaker 3: That's what we should all be striving to do. And
- 2:06:20Speaker 3: it's important that we recognize... you know, that we, that
- 2:06:23Speaker 3: we are doing that work and that we are all growing.
- 2:06:25Speaker 3: Because I think one of the things about like youth
- 2:06:28Speaker 3: and just, you know, people, maybe we're just not tapped
- 2:06:30Speaker 3: in with lots of different things or whatever is feeling like,
- 2:06:34Speaker 3: you know, like there's no capacity for anyone to grow.
- 2:06:38Speaker 3: Whoever he was five years ago, that's who you are today.
- 2:06:40Speaker 3: And that's how I treat you. Like, that's just not,
- 2:06:42Speaker 3: you know, I will personally never forgive how Jordan for, uh,
- 2:06:47Speaker 3: walking up in his parents' house and spoiling the surprise
- 2:06:52Speaker 3: that he's about to be the Green Lantern. I will
- 2:06:54Speaker 3: personally never forgive that. I don't care that it happened
- 2:06:56Speaker 3: back in 20- whatever, 06 or whatever the fuck, 16,
- 2:07:00Speaker 3: whatever the fuck it happened, I'm still mad. But maybe
- 2:07:02Speaker 3: he grew from that. That's the point. Maybe he's a
- 2:07:05Speaker 3: different nigga now. I don't know.
- 2:07:06Speaker 4: Maybe he's being a better nigga.
- 2:07:08Speaker 3: I want to add just.
- 2:07:11Speaker 3: To Ben, I mean, thank you. I do want to
- 2:07:12Speaker 3: add to that just to you specifically, Janicia, because you
- 2:07:15Speaker 3: have also been a part of our history and our journey.
- 2:07:17Speaker 3: Like you've been a part of us for all nerds,
- 2:07:19Speaker 3: the Bible of the of us. Right. And and where
- 2:07:22Speaker 3: we've gone, where we've been. And and and I just
- 2:07:25Speaker 3: think that it's. We could have done it without you. Like,
- 2:07:28Speaker 3: we could have got to the 10K without you. We
- 2:07:30Speaker 3: could have been who we are without you. Same thing
- 2:07:32Speaker 3: with you, Rod. Yeah. Same thing with you, Rod.
- 2:07:34Speaker 2: No, don't include me.
- 2:07:38Speaker 5: No, when we talk about me, like, inspiration and people who, like,
- 2:07:41Speaker 5: you know, set the bar, you know, like, The black
- 2:07:45Speaker 5: guy who tips is one of them ones where I'm
- 2:07:47Speaker 5: always like, fuck, you niggas get up and do this
- 2:07:49Speaker 5: shit damn near every day.
- 2:07:51Speaker 4: I got to step my game up.
- 2:07:53Speaker 3: Like, I'm lazy. You know, that's all I say.
- 2:07:56Speaker 4: And this nigga's funny. You know what I mean, Karen?
- 2:07:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:08:00Speaker 5: I always say whenever I have you on the show,
- 2:08:02Speaker 5: if I get you to laugh, I've done my due
- 2:08:04Speaker 5: diligence for the day, you know, because that's like, you know,
- 2:08:06Speaker 5: it's like impressing my favorite comedian.
- 2:08:08Speaker 3: If you made Rod laugh, that means you really that nigga, right? So, but,
- 2:08:11Speaker 3: but I'm not, and I'm also not saying that Rod
- 2:08:13Speaker 3: just to be like a me too moment. Like also
- 2:08:15Speaker 3: you like, no, for real. Like you've been part of
- 2:08:17Speaker 3: our journey, our culture, our history. You've been part of
- 2:08:20Speaker 3: this too. So you're just as very much to thank
- 2:08:22Speaker 3: for where we are now, as much as Janice, as
- 2:08:25Speaker 3: much as a few other people, but the blacks that
- 2:08:27Speaker 3: are here in this room right now, I want to say,
- 2:08:29Speaker 3: thank you. Like this really matters. And again, thank you
- 2:08:33Speaker 3: for sitting with us on here for two hours.
- 2:08:34Speaker 2: I've been listening to you since you was a grand
- 2:08:36Speaker 2: Duchess of tech, man.
- 2:08:38Speaker 3: Forever and always.
- 2:08:40Speaker 2: Come on now.
- 2:08:41Speaker 3: Yeah. Thank y'all. All right.
