Transcript
- 0:00Speaker: If your husband or your mom or a friend made some comment
- 0:06about the state of your house, do you feel immediately defensive?
- 0:12Do you feel defensive even if nobody said anything at all, but you just imagine
- 0:18that they're probably thinking it?
- 0:21Defensiveness is a sign of excuse making.
- 0:26It's a distraction
- 0:29and a deflection technique that we have to recognize and then deal with what's really
- 0:36going on underneath that defensiveness.
- 0:40Defensiveness is a red flag that something with our attitudes is totally off
- 0:48Now, last month in Convivial Circle was our no excuses month, and every week on
- 0:56our topic, I have a 20, 25-minute little pep talk that I give on that topic, and I
- 1:05wanted to share this little clip from last month's seminar called Defensiveness is a
- 1:13Sign of Excuses Because I think it might help all of us be more aware of what's
- 1:21really going on in our head and why.
- 1:24defensiveness-is-a-sign-of-excuses-convivial-circle-1789493243: And so right there, that situation needs
- 1:28to be dealt with one way or another, and defensiveness isn't gonna make it
- 1:32better So giving reasons in a defensive manner is an indication that you need
- 1:40to s- take it a step back or two.
- 1:42Those reasons are not gonna be helpful.
- 1:45They're not gonna get you anywhere productive.
- 1:48You have to take a step back and say, "Wait, what is this you know,
- 1:54who am I defending myself against or what am I defending myself against?
- 1:59Why do I feel attacked just by my husband walking through the door
- 2:03and he hasn't done or said anything?
- 2:06It's like that's not him.
- 2:08That's some kind of story happening in my head Because maybe you told yourself, " He
- 2:14will be happy if I have the house clean.
- 2:16The house isn't clean, therefore he's not gonna be happy."
- 2:19Now he walks in the door, and I'm assuming he's not happy because I
- 2:23didn't do what I said I was gonna do, and that's all of this spinning
- 2:26that's happening in our own head.
- 2:29And then we respond defensively in our head, but even to our
- 2:35husband who has no idea that this has been spinning up in ourâ¦
- 2:39You know, he has no idea what's going on because it's all in our heads
- 2:44And so as soon as we start feeling those defensive reasonings coming to try to act
- 2:53as a protective layer, we have to say, "What am I trying to protect myself from?"
- 2:59Right.
- 3:00Stephanie says, "If my excuses were actually valid or my reasons were
- 3:03valid, then I wouldn't feel attacked.
- 3:05I'd just feel normal."
- 3:06Yeah.
- 3:07Yeah.
- 3:08I think many husbands
- 3:10Don't even know what's going on half the time, right?
- 3:12Because we don't even know what's going on because we aren't aware of it ourselves.
- 3:17It's- the story spins up in our heads, and we don't step back and question it.
- 3:23And so we need some kind of prompt, some kind of trigger that
- 3:26reminds us to examine what's going on with our internal narrative.
- 3:34And I think that feeling of defensiveness is recognizable enough that it can be
- 3:40our prompt to step back and ask, "What are we trying to protect ourselves from?
- 3:46What's going on, and why do I feel the need to extend a protective
- 3:52barrier between myself and this other person or this circumstance?"
- 3:59And then, you can either ask for forgiveness and repent and get on the
- 4:05right path again if there's real guilt
- 4:08Which would include like lying to yourself about your husband.
- 4:13That would be something that you might need to repent.
- 4:15If you s- spun a false story in your head about how your husband's going
- 4:20to respond and you just are reacting based on that internal story, even
- 4:25though nothing came out of your mouth to someone else, that can be an internal
- 4:32slander of your husband to yourself.
- 4:35So that, that's something to repent of.
- 4:38And then you have restoration once you've repented and there's the ability
- 4:42to move on If it's just a vague feeling bad because things aren't good enough,
- 4:49then that's a fake guilt that is s- a cover for ⦠That's keeping us stuck
- 4:57and low because then we're protected from real responsibilities and abounding
- 5:05in good works, which increases our responsibilities and makes us more busy.
- 5:12And so sometimes those feelings that just kind of vaguely keep us down, and
- 5:18then we're defensive if anyone questions them That can be a self-protective
- 5:25measure to keep our lives and ourselves small and actually unproductive
- 5:32Yes.
- 5:33Annie said, "I grew up where every little flaw was a reason to be in
- 5:36trouble, and my poor husband is so sweet and is never unhappy with me, but has
- 5:41had to deal with those old feelings."
- 5:43Yeah.
- 5:44if you have ever been yelled at without cause, uh, gotten in trouble and it wasn't
- 5:51really because you did anything wrong, but just because whoever, you know, one
- 5:56of your parents or whoever was having their own problem and taking it out on
- 6:00you We need those prompts to help us to recognize that our trained responses,
- 6:09our self-preservation responses, are no longer based in the reality.
- 6:13It takes practice, but it takes awareness and intentional practice.
- 6:18It's not just going to magically go away And it takes intention to not pass
- 6:24that same tendency on ourselves when the roles flip and now we're the parents
- 6:29The responses that we're used to are just reacting and taking out
- 6:35our emotions on other people, whether that's anger or sadness.
- 6:39Like, it could be multiple feelings, but it's still being ruled by
- 6:44feelings rather than reality
- 6:48Speaker: If we're going to organize our attitude, which is what we're focusing

- 7:17that level of self-awareness is key to organizing our attitude.
- 7:21So I wanna share this clip with you.
