- Margaux: Over 2.4 million. That's how many times people searched for edible glitter on Amazon in a single year. For a product your grandmother never bought once in her life. Dana: And I know exactly why you picked this topic. Because it happened to me. New Year's Eve, my sister-in-law hands me a glass of something gold — and it's moving. Swirling. Half the room had their phones out before midnight. I spent the rest of the party asking what was in it. Margaux: Welcome to The Monégasque Table. Today's question is the one everybody at that party was really asking: why are glitter drinks suddenly everywhere? Dana: And my version of it: is "everywhere" even real? Or does it just live in my feed? Margaux: Here's the answer up front. It's real, and you can measure it. Amazon search data shows over 2.4 million searches for this category in a year. The drink-specific searches are growing several times faster than the general glitter searches — "edible glitter for drinks" grew more than eightfold in a single year. And almost none of those searches include a brand name. That last part is the tell. This isn't one company's ad money. It's a category arriving on its own. Dana: Okay, but I've lived through unicorn toast. Charcoal ice cream. Everything grows eightfold right up until it vanishes. Why should I believe the sparkle is different? Margaux: Hold that punch — it gets its own round. First I want to show you who's actually driving this, because it's not who you'd think. Dana: Let me guess. Influencers. Margaux: That's the surprise. The one Instagram hashtag for this category — #edibleglitter — sits at 22.2K posts. Total. And no verified account owns it. No celebrity, no brand. Now put that next to over 2.4 million searches. The searching dwarfs the posting. Dana: Meaning what, in mom terms? Margaux: Meaning nobody is pushing this on you. There's no glitter industrial complex. Regular people saw a sparkling drink at a party — like you did — went home, and typed "edible glitter for drinks" into a search bar. More than 9 in 10 of those searches don't name any brand at all. That's word of mouth. The oldest engine there is. Dana: (laughs) So Big Sparkle isn't coming for us. Fine. And honestly, that matches my story. Nobody sold me that drink. My sister-in-law made it, and I hounded her for the how. Margaux: And the reviews back your party up. There's an analysis of about 2,400 category reviews, and the stories repeat like a chorus. A holiday. A kitchen. Somebody's daughter. The same shape every time: bought a jar for one party, the drinks became the thing everyone talked about, came back later for more colors. Dana: Alright, so when does this wave actually crest? Give me the calendar. Margaux: Mid-December is the big one — the holiday and New Year's toast season. Then late October. Then early February. Dana: Halloween potions and Valentine's. Margaux: Exactly. Three spikes, every year, tied to the calendar — not to any algorithm. October wants a black shimmering potion. December wants the gold toast. February wants pink. And the quiet stretch is late spring, when there's nothing on anyone's fridge to host. Dana: Okay, now my punch, because I did homework too. In that same review analysis, the "fun addition to drinks" theme is 8.7% of positive mentions. Not even 1 in 10. You're calling this a drinks wave, and the drink people are barely a tenth of the cheering section. Margaux: That's a real number, and it deserves a straight answer. Yes — 8.7% of positive mentions. And here's the other half of it: roughly half the usage mentions in this category are still cake decorating. Even in products sold for drinks. Dana: So the glitter drink is the loud new thing, but the day job is still dessert. Margaux: Right. The drinks side is the growth edge, not the majority. If you pictured a country where every cocktail sparkles — no. It's spreading party to party, one sister-in-law at a time. That's what growing several times faster from a smaller base actually looks like. Dana: Then I'm taking that round. Margaux: Take it — that's the round you win. "Everywhere" is directionally true and literally false. Glitter drinks are suddenly findable everywhere. They are not yet in everything. Dana: Now the fad question. Unicorn toast had its year too. Why is this one still climbing? Margaux: Two honest reasons, and one hedge. Reason one: it's attached to occasions that repeat. Unicorn toast was one recipe — you make it twice and you're done. Glitter attaches to every clear drink you'll ever pour at every party you'll ever host, and December comes back every single year. Reason two: the effort math. One pinch — about 0.1 grams — one stir, done. Close to three-quarters of positive reviews in this category mention how easy it is. Easy things stick at parties, because parties are already hard. Dana: And the hedge? Margaux: Could the curve flatten? Sure. Every wave does eventually. But a fad dies when the next season forgets it, and this one keeps getting re-invited every December. Dana: Here's where I push back on the everyone-should-try-it energy, though. My actual drink at an actual gathering is coffee with the other moms. Or cola for the kids' table. Who is this wave actually for? Margaux: Not for coffee day — and that's worth saying plainly, so let's do the who-should-skip-it list. If your drinks are opaque — coffee, cola, a milk punch, a stout — skip it. The reviewer consensus says it flat out: it works best with clear drinks. If you want it to change the flavor, skip it — it's a flavorless powder, it adds nothing you can taste. And if there's no occasion on your calendar? Honestly, wait. The jar isn't the magic. The party is the magic. The jar just shows up dressed for it. Dana: So the wave is for the person with a clear pour and a date on the fridge. Margaux: Champagne for a toast. A pink lemonade birthday. A potion-colored punch in October. If that's you, one jar runs about 100 drinks — call it 15 cents a glass at $14.99. Joining the wave costs less than the ice. Dana: Scorecard time. I came in asking whether glitter drinks were even a real thing or just my feed being weird. Where I've landed: the demand is real and measured — millions of searches, growing fastest exactly where the drinks are. Nobody owns it — no brand in the searches, no verified account on the hashtag — which smells like word of mouth, not a campaign. It runs on the party calendar: December, Halloween, Valentine's. And the round I won: by usage it's still mostly a cake product. The drinks are the fast-growing new job, not the whole story. Margaux: Caveats stay on the record: skip it for opaque drinks, skip it if you want flavor, and nobody needs a jar without a party. If you do have the party — after over 400,000 orders across the US, Canada, and the UK, with the gold jar sitting at 4.6 stars, the crowd has pretty much voted. The MONÉGASQUE Iconic Gold 10 gram drink glitter is on Amazon — flake-style, built to stay visible in the glass. Dana: Next time, a question straight off my errand list: can you buy edible glitter at a craft store? Because I was in one last week, and that aisle has gotten complicated. Margaux: Complicated is the polite word — bring your reading glasses, because the label decides everything. Quick note before we go — this show is produced by the team at Monégasque, with AI-crafted hosts, and every number you heard was checked by humans against the documents. See you at the table.
