- 0:00Speaker 1: Swipe right. It's one more thing. I'm strong and getty.
- 0:05Speaker 1: One more thing.
- 0:11Speaker 2: We've already get into swiping Wright left, which I only
- 0:14Speaker 2: know about from hearing people reference it.
- 0:16Speaker 1: I've never done it myself.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Before we get to that, here's a little John Stewart
- 0:21Speaker 2: from the Daily Show earlier this week.
- 0:23Speaker 3: And the Harris campaign has a massive ground game, fifty
- 0:27Speaker 3: thousand volunteers.
- 0:28Speaker 4: This is the first time some Democrats have told me
- 0:30Speaker 4: they've ever heard of people knocking on the same doors
- 0:32Speaker 4: a second time or a third time.
- 0:35Speaker 3: You know, if there's one thing people love more than
- 0:38Speaker 3: someone appearing randomly at their door once, it's that same
- 0:44Speaker 3: in Parson coming back two or three times to talk politics,
- 0:52Speaker 3: even though everyone from vacuum salesman to Jehovah's witnesses, No,
- 0:56Speaker 3: that's a losing strategy.
- 0:58Speaker 1: In fact, they own that for decades.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Let's just spend a quarter of a billion.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Dollars on it.
- 1:04Speaker 3: You know what Democrats should do, whatever money is left over,
- 1:08Speaker 3: send those same people back to those voters' doors and
- 1:13Speaker 3: just knock again during dinner, and when the homeowner comes
- 1:17Speaker 3: to the door, go, what the scot.
- 1:24Speaker 1: I thought we connected? Wow?
- 1:28Speaker 2: John Stewart as usual pointing out the obvious that everybody
- 1:34Speaker 2: miss misses. That was a different era, back when campaigns
- 1:40Speaker 2: built their their ground game with door knockers. Who it's
- 1:44Speaker 2: the same with answering your phone. Nobody answers the phone
- 1:46Speaker 2: if it's a number they don't know. And most people
- 1:49Speaker 2: in the modern era, probably not for better, probably for worse,
- 1:52Speaker 2: but don't like people coming and knocking on their door,
- 1:55Speaker 2: Like John Stewart's how about that person coming back a
- 1:58Speaker 2: second time?
- 1:59Speaker 1: Really makes you want to vote for that candidate, doesn't he.
- 2:01Speaker 2: This is a second time you've knocked on my door
- 2:03Speaker 2: until I finally got up and came and answered the door,
- 2:05Speaker 2: hoping you would go away.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Wow, that's just getting back to the.
- 2:12Speaker 5: Incomprehensible amount of money that the Harris campaign spent well
- 2:17Speaker 5: over a billion dollars for a crushing defeat. I mean, God,
- 2:23Speaker 5: bless you. If you want to give away your money
- 2:25Speaker 5: to a political campaign, that's up to you entirely. But man,
- 2:29Speaker 5: that's a lot of money spent for naught. Of course,
- 2:31Speaker 5: anybody who got it is thinking, yeah, I'm loving this trend.
- 2:35Speaker 5: I don't even have to win, and they give me
- 2:37Speaker 5: a you know, they spend a billion dollars. But and
- 2:39Speaker 5: certainly in the advertising industry it's appreciated. But holy cow,
- 2:44Speaker 5: how much would they have lost by if they'd only
- 2:46Speaker 5: spent as much as Trump?
- 2:49Speaker 4: Right, there was a video that went viral right before
- 2:52Speaker 4: the actual election took place of Kamala going to some
- 2:55Speaker 4: family's home and she was going to do get a
- 2:58Speaker 4: video of a door knock, and one of the people
- 3:01Speaker 4: somewhere around the scene took a cell phone video of
- 3:04Speaker 4: her having the family go back inside so they could
- 3:07Speaker 4: get a better take of her doing a door Nah,
- 3:10Speaker 4: that's like it's.
- 3:11Speaker 5: A reality TV show.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Exactly. Times change.
- 3:15Speaker 2: There was a time when I guess you would have
- 3:18Speaker 2: been perfectly happy to have somebody knock on your door
- 3:20Speaker 2: and you open the door and you engage them in conversation.
- 3:22Speaker 2: That people aren't that way anymore.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Also, the way couples meet.
- 3:26Speaker 2: This gets to the swipe left or swipe right thing
- 3:29Speaker 2: that I teased a Have you ever seen those graphs?
- 3:31Speaker 2: I usually see them on YouTube, but it's a moving
- 3:34Speaker 2: graph and you see how things shift over time.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Have you ever seen those graphs? Are really cool?
- 3:39Speaker 2: Like I saw one of the most dominant websites and
- 3:45Speaker 2: it started in like nineteen ninety five, and you'd have
- 3:48Speaker 2: the biggest.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Long bar graph.
- 3:49Speaker 2: At the top was was AOL, And then as the
- 3:53Speaker 2: months and years went by, the AOL graph kept shrinking.
- 3:55Speaker 2: But then all of a sudden, a Yahoo shows up,
- 3:57Speaker 2: Then a Google shows up and moves a clear fossile
- 3:59Speaker 2: screen and dominates it. Can you just see how things
- 4:02Speaker 2: change over time?
- 4:03Speaker 5: I came acrossos animations, They're really cool. I've come across
- 4:05Speaker 5: some like world population, Yeah, immigration flow and that's right thing.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Yeah, IDP.
- 4:11Speaker 2: This one was how couples met, and it started in
- 4:13Speaker 2: nineteen thirty and it went until now. And I screen
- 4:17Speaker 2: captured a couple of different points which I thought were interesting.
- 4:21Speaker 2: But starting in nineteen thirty, how couples met almost two
- 4:25Speaker 2: thirds from one source, well, three sources put together, but
- 4:32Speaker 2: they're kind of similar ish sort of things. Family number one,
- 4:36Speaker 2: school number two, friends number three. Almost two thirds of
- 4:40Speaker 2: couples met from family, school, or friends. And then you
- 4:43Speaker 2: get to twenty twenty four, and that's only eighteen percent
- 4:47Speaker 2: of people meet through family, school and friends. The two
- 4:50Speaker 2: thirds replaced little by little over time. Obviously you guessed
- 4:53Speaker 2: it with online. I didn't realize that almost two thirds
- 4:57Speaker 2: of couples now meet online. It's the most most common
- 5:00Speaker 2: way to me. I think some of that trend probably
- 5:03Speaker 2: has to do with age. You know, if you're going
- 5:07Speaker 2: to form a permanent or would be permanent life relationship
- 5:13Speaker 2: at age eighteen, say to twenty one, you're going to
- 5:16Speaker 2: do it differently. I think, Well, I got to believe
- 5:19Speaker 2: if you eliminate, you know, people fifty and up, maybe
- 5:23Speaker 2: this number of online couples meeting goes up.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Probably it might Jesus might be eighty.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Percent or something for forty and under. I don't have
- 5:33Speaker 2: any idea. Do you have any sense of that, Katie?
- 5:34Speaker 2: Like most of your friends do they single? Friends?
- 5:36Speaker 1: Do they meet people online? Most of them online?
- 5:39Speaker 4: Actually, I've got one friend who met her fiance at
- 5:42Speaker 4: work and then the rest of them have been online dating.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Yeah, everybody I know who's single, they really only talk
- 5:49Speaker 2: about online dating. I mean, as if that is the
- 5:53Speaker 2: option for meeting people, and it might be. I don't know.
- 5:57Speaker 2: I haven't tried it, and I'm scared to death of
- 6:00Speaker 2: trying it for a variety of reasons, and I don't
- 6:02Speaker 2: think I ever will. But if that's how everybody else
- 6:04Speaker 2: is meeting it, does you know what scares you about it?
- 6:09Speaker 1: Being ending up in a vent as all.
- 6:12Speaker 2: That being a minor celebrity makes it weird in some ways. Okay, yeah,
- 6:20Speaker 2: I don't want anybody getting any personal details about me
- 6:23Speaker 2: and you know, just screen capturing and.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Posting them or whatever. I mean that just that weirds
- 6:29Speaker 1: me out a lot.
- 6:30Speaker 2: And then I don't know, it just sounds like a
- 6:32Speaker 2: lot of work and people I know who do it,
- 6:34Speaker 2: and maybe if you're an extrovert, it's awesome. You go
- 6:37Speaker 2: on a lot of dates and get to meet a
- 6:38Speaker 2: lot of people, and then it either goes from there.
- 6:41Speaker 4: I just had to I've been on two online dates
- 6:44Speaker 4: and they were both hillacious, So you're not really missing
- 6:46Speaker 4: a hole.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Well, I guess you have to weed through a lot
- 6:49Speaker 2: of hilatious to get to the one that is great,
- 6:52Speaker 2: and you know you end up together for a while
- 6:54Speaker 2: or forever, which doesn't surprise me.
- 6:57Speaker 5: Yeah, correct me if I'm wrong. Isn't hilacious apart positive?
- 7:03Speaker 1: I'm an idiot.
- 7:05Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 7:06Speaker 1: I'm right.
- 7:10Speaker 2: I thought it was awful. Yeah, you had drinks, fell
- 7:14Speaker 2: in love and hooked up. That's a hlatious date.
- 7:16Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm not quibbling for the point of quibbling. I
- 7:18Speaker 5: just love words, but hilatious. So I understood perfectly well
- 7:22Speaker 5: what you meant, and I get it very.
- 7:24Speaker 4: Great, bad or overwhelming. There was a hilacious hailstorm.
- 7:31Speaker 5: Well you're right, it means extraordinary, remarkable, Yes, Michael, thank you,
- 7:36Speaker 5: thank you. So you used a Prochael, who was the
- 7:38Speaker 5: editor in chief of the Oxford English Dictionary for twenty years.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Katie used the probably, but they learned that one.
- 7:43Speaker 2: They were bad because what I picture is you both
- 7:48Speaker 2: know within two seconds that you don't want to do this,
- 7:53Speaker 2: and you still got to go through with the half
- 7:55Speaker 2: hour cup of coffee or meal or whatever it is
- 7:57Speaker 2: you do.
- 7:57Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 7:58Speaker 4: Well, yeah, my The worst one for me was this guy.
- 8:02Speaker 4: He was beautiful online. I mean he was in a suit,
- 8:06Speaker 4: he was wakeboarding, and he seemed super outdoorsy and fun.
- 8:10Speaker 1: I was like, all right, cool.
- 8:11Speaker 4: He showed up to this really nice restaurant wearing the
- 8:14Speaker 4: longest jean shorts I've ever seen in my life. Wow,
- 8:19Speaker 4: a Lakers jersey down to his knees and a flat
- 8:21Speaker 4: built hat worn crooked, and I went, what the f right?
- 8:25Speaker 4: And it turns out he was in a suit because
- 8:27Speaker 4: he was a bodyguard at a strip club across the
- 8:29Speaker 4: street from the radio station where I worked.
- 8:31Speaker 5: So, oh, there you go.
- 8:32Speaker 1: He could have hung Yeah, the.
- 8:34Speaker 2: People that the people that mislead the real them, because
- 8:38Speaker 2: I wouldn't want.
- 8:39Speaker 1: To do that, be God.
- 8:40Speaker 2: The last thing I would want is to walk into
- 8:43Speaker 2: a room and see the look of disappointment in their eyes.
- 8:47Speaker 1: I just it just sounds horrible. I wouldn't.
- 8:49Speaker 5: I've seen that so many times. I've seen it enough
- 8:52Speaker 5: for me too.
- 8:54Speaker 2: I just I can't have I can't imagine wanting to
- 8:58Speaker 2: over sell myself to that point.
- 9:00Speaker 1: But I don't.
- 9:00Speaker 2: I don't know, I don't know, I know, I know
- 9:02Speaker 2: it's a very very common thing. I heard from men
- 9:03Speaker 2: and women.
- 9:05Speaker 5: You know, Katie. A man who's willing to rock the
- 9:07Speaker 5: extra long jorts is got confidence.
- 9:10Speaker 2: And showing up to a restaurant which is a tank top.
- 9:16Speaker 2: He knows who he is exactly, which is fine. But
- 9:19Speaker 2: why wouldn't you want to portray who you are in
- 9:22Speaker 2: the picture to people that might like who you are,
- 9:26Speaker 2: might think cool. They want a guy dressed like that.
- 9:29Speaker 2: I see attractive women with guys dressed like that. There
- 9:32Speaker 2: are women out there who want that just wasn't you.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Right, not me?
- 9:35Speaker 4: And that Yeah, there was not one photo of I
- 9:38Speaker 4: think there were like eight or nine on his page
- 9:40Speaker 4: that indicated that that was his sense of style at all.
- 9:43Speaker 1: So when he showed up.
- 9:44Speaker 4: And Greg Gory, who we had on the Extra Long,
- 9:48Speaker 4: Extra Large Prora the podcast, he came with me as
- 9:51Speaker 4: like a covert guy that was sitting at another table,
- 9:54Speaker 4: just to make sure I was safe.
- 9:55Speaker 1: And I looked over at him and went, I got
- 9:57Speaker 1: I gotta get out of here so bad. It was
- 10:01Speaker 1: so bad now.
- 10:02Speaker 5: To cover wing Man. I like that.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Yeah, so I'd go with in my description single parent.
- 10:07Speaker 2: I've got roughly thirty minutes every two weeks to spend
- 10:11Speaker 2: time with you, and I'm angry most of the time.
- 10:15Speaker 2: So line up over, take a number exactly.
- 10:19Speaker 5: Let them to the left, Ladies. I'm thinking about my kids,
- 10:24Speaker 5: two of whom are in stable relationships, one of whom
- 10:27Speaker 5: is not at this point, and it was school and
- 10:31Speaker 5: they're in their mid twenties to early thirties, school mutual friends.
- 10:36Speaker 5: And my son is not currently in a stable relationship,
- 10:41Speaker 5: but his last girlfriend that was mutual friends. I think
- 10:46Speaker 5: now maybe it's they grew up under me. In a
- 10:49Speaker 5: family slash cult that makes the Amish look like the jetsums.
- 10:54Speaker 5: So maybe that rubbed off on them and they've gone
- 10:57Speaker 5: old school.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:58Speaker 2: My whole life is made up of almost entirely friends
- 11:02Speaker 2: acquaintances through things like that.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Yeah. Anyway, I've been to two weddings this year, both
- 11:06Speaker 1: of them Tender. Really Yeah wow? Now is Tinder still
- 11:11Speaker 1: a uh?
- 11:13Speaker 2: Because it had the reputation originally of being more of
- 11:15Speaker 2: a hookup app than a meet.
- 11:17Speaker 1: People to get married? But is that still the case?
- 11:19Speaker 1: I don't have any idea.
- 11:20Speaker 4: I believe there's one that came out in the last
- 11:23Speaker 4: couple of years post Tender that is more of the
- 11:25Speaker 4: hookup app.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Now, I can't remember what a lot of people I
- 11:28Speaker 1: know talk about. Bumble that's the one. Oh really?
- 11:31Speaker 4: Yeah, Bumble is the one that I've heard is more
- 11:33Speaker 4: for hooking up. Really, Or there's Bumble and Hinge. Yeah,
- 11:38Speaker 4: I don't I think, Yeah, take your word for it.
- 11:40Speaker 5: Yeah, these names are increasingly random. I'd ringe.
- 11:45Speaker 2: I'd never thought about it before, but that actually would
- 11:48Speaker 2: be a stumbling block.
- 11:49Speaker 1: So say, for whatever reason.
- 11:51Speaker 2: They're not appalled by my photo and uh, and we
- 11:54Speaker 2: and we decide we want to meet and uh, and
- 11:56Speaker 2: my immediate aggression doesn't turn them off. We just want
- 12:00Speaker 2: to meet. I would say, let me get in my
- 12:03Speaker 2: calendar two Thursdays after next between one and three in
- 12:11Speaker 2: the afternoon, before I pick up my kid. I think
- 12:13Speaker 2: if you're in my neighborhood, we could meet for a
- 12:15Speaker 2: little while.
- 12:17Speaker 1: I'll make it least.
- 12:18Speaker 5: We could pull up next to each other to stop
- 12:20Speaker 5: light and say, how are you doing good? How are
- 12:21Speaker 5: you good?
- 12:23Speaker 1: Nice to meet you.
- 12:24Speaker 2: I gotta go pick up my kid from school, and
- 12:26Speaker 2: I got some laundry to do in a meal to prepare.
- 12:28Speaker 1: I'm hungry. You can follow me through the Mickey D's
- 12:30Speaker 1: drive stream as well. We'll do that thing where I
- 12:33Speaker 1: buy your meal the car ahead of you. I'll pay
- 12:36Speaker 1: it forward to your meal behind me, and then see
- 12:39Speaker 1: you later.
- 12:40Speaker 5: You want to do a bang bang, No, that's not sexual, Well,
- 12:42Speaker 5: let me explain.
- 12:43Speaker 1: It's two different kinds of meals. And never mind true
- 12:47Speaker 1: love over a mcflurry. Well, I guess that's it.
