- 0:05Welcome to The Hypnotist, the show that gives you inside
- 0:09access to cutting edge hypnosis with real clients facing
- 0:12genuine. Issues.
- 0:13Brought to you by The Hypnotherapist, demanded by
- 0:16celebrities, CEOs and even royalty, Adam Cox.
- 0:20These recordings took place live from Adam's clinic in London's
- 0:24world famous Harley Street. So get yourself comfortable and
- 0:31enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:39Hi, it's Adam here. And you're about to listen to a
- 0:42hypnosis session all about public speaking, confidence.
- 0:46And a lot of people feel nervous about speaking in front of
- 0:49crowds, speaking in front of large people, even speaking in
- 0:52front of a camera like I am now. And that's because there is a
- 0:56fear of being judged, a fear of getting it wrong, a fear of
- 0:59being mocked and laughter and all of these things which mainly
- 1:04are an overreaction. It can happen.
- 1:07People can have opinions, things, people definitely will
- 1:09judge, but So what? In the big scheme of things, it
- 1:12makes very little difference. Now the client that I was
- 1:15working with when I asked the question, was there anything
- 1:19that initially they did that they felt quite anxious, but the
- 1:23more they did it, the more confident they get so that now
- 1:27they don't even worry at all about doing that thing.
- 1:30And for them that was driving. They love driving, love driving
- 1:34fast, love driving on motorways, big open spaces and not everyone
- 1:37does. I've worked with some clients
- 1:39that that's their biggest fear. But for this client, they were
- 1:42anxious about public speaking but felt very confident driving.
- 1:47And I asked. One very specific question, I
- 1:50said, how many people do you think die by doing public
- 1:54speaking? And she thought, and she smiled,
- 1:57and it dawned on her that she had lots of confidence driving,
- 2:02even though people do crash all the time and it can be
- 2:04devastating and people can die. And she did feel anxious public
- 2:09speaking, even though it's a very safe thing to do because
- 2:12the brain was acting as if it was a threat, when actually it's
- 2:16a very, very safe thing. That's important because we want
- 2:20to bridge the resources of how she felt driving into the space
- 2:25of public speaking. So this will work particularly
- 2:29if two things are true for you, if you're a confident, happy
- 2:32driver and also you get anxious public speaking, if those two
- 2:36things are correct for you, you're going to get a lot more
- 2:40value from this session than if they're not.
- 2:42But equally, if you do want a bespoke session, maybe it's
- 2:45something else for you that you're really confident in,
- 2:48Could be cycling, it could be, could be running, it could be a
- 2:52particular sport, whatever it is, and you want to have a
- 2:55bespoke session to make you feel as confident as you feel in that
- 2:59area, in a different area of your life, then check out my
- 3:02website adamcox.co.uk. Or you can have a look in the
- 3:05description and there's various ways that you can figure out how
- 3:08to work with me directly. For now though, I'd encourage
- 3:12you to find a quiet place Erhas, a sofa, maybe a chair, maybe a
- 3:17bed, something comfortable where you won't be distracted or
- 3:20disturbed, and then relax and enjoy the session.
- 3:47Take a deep breath in, and as you breathe in, breathe in that
- 3:57slow, long, relaxing breath. And as you exhale, allow
- 4:08yourself to release any feelings of pressure, any artificial
- 4:19ideas about perfection standards, especially those that
- 4:30were never yours to begin with. And as you breathe in and
- 4:37breathe out, just allow the inward breath to breathe in for
- 4:44longer and deeper. And as you exhale, just to keep
- 4:52on allowing that breath to continue until your lungs are
- 4:57empty. So the next inward breath
- 5:01activates that diaphragm. Your unconscious already knows
- 5:10that the more you breathe from deep down in the diaphragm, the
- 5:16more relaxed you feel. Almost like the way you breathe
- 5:23is a switch. Shallow breathing from the chest
- 5:31makes you more vigilant, cautious and slow.
- 5:36Deep breathing from the diaphragm.
- 5:40It makes you feel more confident, calm and relaxed.
- 5:47The deeper you breathe, the more relaxed you feel, and the more
- 5:54relaxed you feel, the deeper you breathe.
- 6:00And I wonder if you can use the power of your imagination to
- 6:08imagine stepping back in time to when you got your driving
- 6:20license. Maybe it was moments after
- 6:25passing a test. Maybe it's a memory of a first
- 6:30car. Well, the first time you drove
- 6:34on a motorway or a long journey with friends.
- 6:41And the more you think about that, the more it dawns on you.
- 6:48Your brain already knows how to feel calm and relaxed without
- 6:56needing to be perfect and without needing to be in control
- 7:02of everything. And when you think about
- 7:06driving, just for a moment, not the theory of driving, but the
- 7:12lived experience behind the wheel, maybe you can even
- 7:21imagine your hands on the steering wheel, your eyes
- 7:26scanning the road on a day of sunshine and open roads.
- 7:33That kind of fun free driving. And there are countless
- 7:39variables. Cars changing lanes, sometimes
- 7:44traffic lights or pedestrians. It could be sunny 1 moment, then
- 7:50cloudy and raining the next. And yet none of that creates
- 7:56panic, because something inside you already knows how to
- 8:02respond. In fact, you don't need to
- 8:07predict everything. You simply respond in the
- 8:13moment. The car slows down, you slow
- 8:17down, a light changes, you adapt, someone behaves
- 8:24unpredictably, you create more distance, and somehow your mind
- 8:31and body respond quickly and effectively.
- 8:39Driving confidence doesn't come from controlling every
- 8:42possibility. It comes from trusting your
- 8:46ability to perceive, to respond, or to react.
- 8:58And good drivers don't try and predict every scenario.
- 9:02They just are aware. They're present, they're
- 9:08responsive. The road is dynamic.
- 9:14And so the driver becomes dynamic too.
- 9:19Alert but relaxed. Focused but adaptable.
- 9:27And the more you think about it, the more you realize the
- 9:33presenting and public speaking is surprisingly similar.
- 9:39When someone stands up to speak, it can feel like taking the
- 9:47steering wheel and driving onto that road.
- 9:52And there may be different faces in the audience, different
- 9:55reactions, unexpected moments. But just like driving, you don't
- 10:04need to control everything. You simply respond.
- 10:11I want you to activate that level of self trust, the trust
- 10:18you have in driving. Just allow that to really
- 10:26amplify and supercharge in your trust in your ability to speak,
- 10:33because across your lifetime, you've spent more hours talking
- 10:38than you have driving. It's a skill you already have.
- 10:47Something happens in a conversation, you know you can
- 10:52adapt to an unexpected question. You know that you can respond in
- 11:00real time and if you can do that in a one to one conversation,
- 11:07you can do that in front of a bigger audience.
- 11:13The same abilities used when driving are available to you
- 11:19when speaking. You still have awareness,
- 11:24adaptability, quick thinking and confidence in responding.
- 11:33The only difference is that if speaking to other people was a
- 11:39journey, you've completed more journeys with your voice than
- 11:47you ever have in a car. And I wonder how many thousands
- 11:56of journeys you've had, if speaking is like driving, each
- 12:03one filled with small adjustments that happened
- 12:08automatically, without overthinking, without anxiety,
- 12:16and you have a deep, ingrained belief that you can handle
- 12:23whatever happens. It's true in driving and it's
- 12:29true in speaking. Every presentation, every
- 12:36difficult conversation, whether it's to conference delegates or
- 12:44colleagues, whether it's a sales presentation or an annual
- 12:51review, just every presentation is simply another journey.
- 12:58You have a start, you move through the route and before you
- 13:03know it, you arrive at the destination to find yourself
- 13:10back on that open Rd. The weather is clear, the road
- 13:16stretches ahead, and there is a sense of movement, flow,
- 13:23freedom. And when you enjoy driving, you
- 13:31smile without realizing, because at some level, driving on an
- 13:37open Rd. under sunshine is a symbol of freedom.
- 13:46There are some places in the world certain people, certain
- 13:53genders are not allowed to speak.
- 13:58And what if speaking also represents empowerment, freedom?
- 14:09And I want you to feel that sense of freedom when you drive,
- 14:13imagine feeling it when you speak.
- 14:19I want you to imagine feeling a sense of fun, liberation,
- 14:25relaxation, the confidence that comes from knowing that you can
- 14:30just do it. Not because everything is
- 14:34perfect, but because there is a sense you've done it before, you
- 14:42have the skills and capabilities and you can respond if
- 14:47necessary. And you've had moments when
- 14:54driving where you've encountered something unfamiliar.
- 15:01An unusual bridge, a long tunnel, winding roads high up in
- 15:10mountains. It can feel daunting.
- 15:16Maybe it's driving in a different country, different
- 15:19rules, different Rd. signs. After doing it once, the brain
- 15:26recalibrates and very quickly. What once felt intimidating
- 15:33feels normal. And isn't it strange when you do
- 15:38difficult driving, all the other driving feels easier in
- 15:43comparison. This is how confidence expands,
- 15:51finding those things that stretch your ability to make
- 15:55everything else easier. And what if public speaking
- 16:03works the same way? What if if you deliberately
- 16:08choose opportunities that stretch way beyond your comfort
- 16:12zone? What if something powerful
- 16:16happens there? What if that recalibrates the
- 16:20brain? A conference talk, A new or
- 16:26bigger audience, A live interview?
- 16:29And once you go beyond the comfort zone, the comfort zone
- 16:37expands and everything else already in it becomes easier,
- 16:45becomes more manageable. And I wonder if you could
- 16:51manage, manage to imagine the very next speaking event,
- 16:56whether it's a big presentation or perhaps an internal meeting.
- 17:04But I want you to imagine seeing it through your own eyes,
- 17:11feeling the way you would feel if you were driving on open
- 17:13roads. See that version of you.
- 17:18But I want you to see yourself, see yourself oozing
- 17:24resourcefulness. I want you to see that version
- 17:29of you smiling, not forcing a smile, A relaxed smile, your
- 17:36posture comfortable. See yourself projecting your
- 17:41voice well. From this perspective, the
- 17:46confidence is obvious, the steady voice, the natural flow
- 17:52of ideas. You see someone capable,
- 17:58engaging, resourceful, inspiring, responding moment by
- 18:04moment. You've got your destination, but
- 18:10you're able to respond in real time if needs be.
- 18:16And as you watch this version of yourself, notice how naturally
- 18:21things unfold. People listening, nods of
- 18:25agreement, eye contact, moments of connection.
- 18:32And when you're absolutely certain that version of you has
- 18:38the resources to far exceed the demands, let me know by nodding
- 18:42your head. That's it.
- 19:02Now rewind it and just as it's about to start, step into that
- 19:09future version of you feeling how it would feel to be calm,
- 19:15comfortable, confident, a deep seated belief that this is well
- 19:23within your capabilities. Imagine you've got your
- 19:29destination. If you need to respond, you can.
- 19:35I want you to feel that this seems easier than driving.
- 19:46Deep down there is a part of you that knows, even if it's rare.
- 19:52Occasionally there are accidents on the road.
- 19:57There are some dangers to driving and yet you feel
- 20:00confident. I want you to make the
- 20:03evaluation that you are more capable, safer.
- 20:08This feels well within your capabilities.
- 20:16Feel the relaxation, the focus. Allow yourself the permission to
- 20:24enjoy, to feel the freedom of responding naturally, and then
- 20:39you can rewind and do it one more time, noticing that it gets
- 20:44easier and easier. And the more you think and
- 20:49connect resourceful feelings to the idea of doing the very thing
- 20:59that has been daunting in the past, you erode the very
- 21:04foundation of anxiety and instead build a foundation of
- 21:11capable confidence. Allow your mind to think that
- 21:20this is easier and safer than driving and know that it is
- 21:26true. And as you hold that thought,
- 21:30it's time to return. So take a deep breath in through
- 21:34your nose and out through your nose.
- 21:39Wiggle your fingers, wiggle your toes.
- 21:41Connect and calibrate into the here and the now.
- 21:45As I now count from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken you.
- 21:49You will return bringing all of these new thoughts, beliefs,
- 21:52resources with you, and most of all, the very next time you
- 21:58present. It will feel more fun, free, and
- 22:04within your capabilities than driving.
- 22:08Starting to count. 123 Waking up 456 More alert 7-8.
- 22:16Open your eyes, open your eyes. 910 wide awake, wide awake, wide
