- 0:10On behalf of George, George Watson and myself, this is Fred Fowler bidding you all a good afternoon from Comiskey Park, the home of the White Sox in Chicago,
- 0:16to bring you this second game of the City Championship Series between the White Sox and the Cubs being played this afternoon in Comiskey Park.
- 0:24The game will not start for about five minutes, but we have time to tell you about the crowd and the stands, and also to give you the lineups for the games to be played this afternoon.
- 0:34Looking out from the press box up here, we would say that there are approximately 15,000 to 18,000 fans in the stands, both in the up production and the boxes below.
- 0:42And it's a bright, sunny day. The fielders are all out on the field down there, all ready for the players to go out, and they've already warmed up and have left the field
- 0:51with just the pitchers warming up down in the open right now.
- 0:56So without more ado, we'll give you the lineup for the game to be played this afternoon.
- 1:00For the Cubs to come to bat first, the land is going to play center field.
- 1:05Cabaretta, third base.
- 1:08Herman, second base.
- 1:12Demarie, right field.
- 1:15Hax, third base.
- 1:18Harknett, catching.
- 1:20Jurgen, short top.
- 1:23And Lon Warnocky will do the pitching.
- 1:26For the White Sox, right flip, left field.
- 1:30Rosenthal, center field.
- 1:33Tuck, right field.
- 1:36Benora, third base.
- 1:39Atling, short top.
- 1:42Hayes, second base.
- 1:45Dyke, third base.
- 1:48Sewell, catching.
- 1:50And Monty Stratton, pitching.
- 1:54The field announcer is just giving the lineup that we have just given you,
- 1:57and the fans are continuing to pull in.
- 1:59In fact, there's a goodly crowd that's already coming in.
- 2:02As we look out over the diamond here,
- 2:05oh incidentally, the umpires are just coming in,
- 2:07the four umpires for this afternoon, and they are
- 2:12Stewart, Barr, McGowan, and Ormsby.
- 2:16Stewart is at first base.
- 2:19Barr is at third base.
- 2:22And Ormsby at the plate.
- 2:26They're not taking out the balls and giving them to the catcher,
- 2:29or rather to the umpire, Barr behind their umpire, Ormsby,
- 2:34behind the plate, throwing his pockets with them.
- 2:36And incidentally, we're going to tell you that the grandstand is sprinkled
- 2:40with a goodly supply of overcoats this afternoon.
- 2:43You know, if we say something about football starting,
- 2:46that's right, it's football season right now.
- 2:48Baseball season is practically over with just the city fairies to wind up the season.
- 2:53And the overcoats are coming more into prominence with
- 2:55Monty showing up here and there.
- 2:57There's a very colorful crowd out in the stands this afternoon.
- 2:59There's a very mild, moderate, gentle wind blowing.
- 3:03In fact, I should say it was coming very gently from the west to southwest.
- 3:07West to southwest. Is that about right?
- 3:09About stow us, Jordan remarks.
- 3:13The breeze seems to be coming from the back of the box here,
- 3:16so it is blowing in a northeasterly direction,
- 3:19which will help if the ball gets above these stands
- 3:22and carrying it into that battlefield bleachers out there,
- 3:24which is about 440 feet.
- 3:28Yes, there's only been one ball ever hit in there.
- 3:30It'll have to be a little bit stronger wind than it is today to carry it really into it.
- 3:34Nonetheless, it is a perfect baseball day.
- 3:37One of those days it can be adapted to almost any sport,
- 3:40whether it's baseball, football, or whatever it happens to be.
- 3:44And there go the White Sox onto the field to take their position
- 3:48for the first half of the first inning.
- 3:51The White Sox are all dressed in their white uniforms,
- 3:53and the visiting Cubs will be in their gray visitor's uniforms this afternoon.
- 3:57And now the game has just about to start,
- 3:59and so for the play-by-play first few innings,
- 4:02here he is, George Watson.
- 4:04Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.
- 4:12We're underway for the second game in the city series between the Sox and the Cubs.
- 4:17Yesterday, of course you know, the White Sox came north to Wrigley Field
- 4:20and taught the Cubs two lessons in baseball by the score of 5-2-1.
- 4:25But in Kennedy allowing only four hits in the entire ball game,
- 4:29which was a crackerjack ball game in the two-watch.
- 4:32And the home run was something to really get a kick out of,
- 4:37the boys swapping home one after another.
- 4:42Our pitch is warming up now.
- 4:44Marty Stratton, looking for the White Sox with Luke Sewell behind the plate,
- 4:48and the first man to bat is Augie Galan.
- 4:51Marty Stratton, a tall spinger out there, taking the rousin bag,
- 4:56goes down his club, getting the signs from Luke Sewell, and the ball game is about to begin.
- 5:02Take it.
- 5:03Arm behind him.
- 5:07Get in the signal and take Marty.
- 5:10And here it is, the first pitch.
- 5:13And ball one.
- 5:23And a pitch.
- 5:26And a foul up into the upper deck just in front of us there,
- 5:29and is met completely by all confess.
- 5:35Strike one.
- 5:36And ball one on Augie Galan.
- 5:40Stretch and a pitch.
- 5:42And the foul takes one into the midst of Luke Sewell for strike two.
- 5:56Strike two and ball one on the hitter.
- 5:58The rousin bag again.
- 5:59Marty Stratton, tall right-hander, pitching Augie Galan batting left-handed.
- 6:04And a man-man shoot which developed into a ball.
- 6:08Strike and ball two.
- 6:12Two and two.
- 6:17Oh, that one, that one cut the inside corner of the play,
- 6:21but Augie Galan didn't like that.
- 6:23He just kind of said that it wants to go by, so it's one out.
- 6:26Augie Galan striking out.
- 6:27Watch that third one go by.
- 6:29Marty just put a screwball twist on that,
- 6:31and it broke sharply over the inside corner of the play.
- 6:34Which brings Phil Cavaretta to bat.
- 6:39And the pitch.
- 6:42And ball one.
- 6:46Ball one for Phil Cavaretta.
- 6:48Stretch.
- 6:51Cutting the inside corner of the play.
- 6:53Ball two.
- 6:56Oh, well.
- 6:59That play is one out rather.
- 7:05One out, the first half of the first inning.
- 7:08And the pitch.
- 7:10That sharply hit ball down to the second baseman, and he hits out.
- 7:15Or the second out.
- 7:22Ball will get down to Jackie Hayes, so it's plenty of time to feel it
- 7:25and get it over to Zeke Minara.
- 7:27Which brings us Bradley Haack, at bat, hitting right-handed.
- 7:32Two out.
- 7:40And he ducked in the mark that time.
- 7:44Oh, I'm sorry.
- 7:45Is that the hack?
- 7:46I'm off the bat.
- 7:47Billy Herman.
- 7:50Billy Herman is the batter.
- 7:53And ball two on Billy Herman.
- 7:55Ball two and strike one.
- 8:04Billy Herman to the pitch.
- 8:06Another one of those underhanded turns.
- 8:08That sharply across the play.
- 8:13Strike one.
- 8:14Ball.
- 8:20Starts to get under the pitch again, to Billy Herman.
- 8:23And Billy takes the right cut about ball.
- 8:26High-five all into the left period.
- 8:29And he is taken very nicely by Ripa Renz, a former player.
- 8:36No hits, no runs, and no errors for the Cubs in their first half
- 8:41and the first inning in the second game between the White Bats and the Cubs.
- 8:46One more to go on the mound.
- 8:59Raising over a few to Debbie Hartnett, both causing the ball around the infield.
- 9:04Cubs are tired and they're traveling in the forms today.
- 9:08And the White Sox down to bat.
- 9:11And there will be Ripa Renz, a left fielder for the Sox.
- 9:19Burning down there like he usually does.
- 9:22Long, slow, and up and then up and away she comes.
- 9:38This right hand has been dropped.
- 9:41The fans are pretty crazy about it, but what he did yesterday by knocking that ball out into the right field,
- 9:46he's had a big recede.
- 9:48The right foot is at bat, long one again to mound.
- 9:53And they're ready to go.
- 9:55And they're trying to get a hand in against the right-hander pitcher.
- 10:08Get some of that good old dirt to rub on that bat.
- 10:17Rubbing at the ball.
- 10:25Here she comes, stretching the pitch and right over the heart of the plate for strike one.
- 10:31Strike one and ball one.
- 10:40Ball two cuts way out in the outside corner.
- 10:43Ball two, strike one.
- 10:47Rant this to hit her.
- 10:53Getting ready to pitch.
- 10:55There's the wind edge.
- 10:57And that beauty right over the heart of the plate.
- 11:01Rather than slow ball, had a very freaky curve.
- 11:06Seemed to kind of lob over.
- 11:09And just let it go. Strike two and ball three.
- 11:15Ball three.
- 11:19Ball three, strike two on Ripper Reddick.
- 11:22First man up in the cut part of the first inning.
- 11:32That should be the good one.
- 11:35Ripper Reddick gets the walk.
- 11:39That's a tip on first.
- 11:41Brings up Mary Rosenthal, the center fielder.
- 11:48Rosenthal a bat, also batting left-handed.
- 11:51That's a tip on first.
- 11:53And Warnocky getting rid of the pitch.
- 11:56Gets his time from Gabby Hardnett.
- 11:58Moore's all in position.
- 12:01Watching first base and here's the pitch.
- 12:07Strike one on Mary Rosenthal.
- 12:11That's just staying pretty close to first base.
- 12:13Long's looking over there, keeping him pretty over the bag.
- 12:17Now a little lead off, watching him, the pitch.
- 12:20And he tries to bunt to let his hand out foul.
- 12:23Strike two on Mary Rosenthal.
- 12:28Boy, striking the ball around the infield.
- 12:33Back to Long Warnocky.
- 12:36He's still working on that ball, trying to get that cover loosened up a little bit.
- 12:41The rising bag, steps up to the slam.
- 12:45Gets the time from Gabby Hardnett.
- 12:48And the pitch.
- 12:55That was ball one.
- 12:58Ball one and strike two on Rosenthal.
- 13:05Ripper Reddrick on first base.
- 13:12There's the lead off.
- 13:15He's about ten feet off the bag.
- 13:17And right straight through the box and right back to base.
- 13:20And now he's held up a second.
- 13:23The ball is a little wide.
- 13:25Holding Reddrick a second.
- 13:27Rosenthal fingers sharply, right field on Warnocky.
- 13:31Went out into center field.
- 13:36So now Mr. Warnocky is in the middle of the hole.
- 13:38No outs.
- 13:40The man on first and second, which brings up Zeke Venora.
- 13:44That is a few yards.
- 13:47Few yards at bat.
- 13:49The man on first and second.
- 13:51He is in a hole now.
- 13:54Foul at two to the left up in the second back of the grandstand.
- 14:00Strike one on Newhall.
- 14:06Strike one on Newhall.
- 14:08Man on first and second.
- 14:10And strike one on the back.
- 14:16Man on first and second pretty close now before he grabs the pitch and blows the pitch.
- 14:23And ball in.
- 14:31Into a playing in first now and figuring that Osmott has got the bounce.
- 14:40Strike one on third one.
- 14:50With a little bit of a second, Warnocky getting around the pitch.
- 14:56And he rebounds.
- 14:58And he busts right down to Warnocky.
- 15:00Warnocky plays the third.
- 15:03He's a little on the third base of the head.
- 15:05Another run from the end.
- 15:06Comes over the end.
- 15:08And Newhall can take the third on the front.
- 15:13Newhall on the third base.
- 15:15Warnocky fielded him two and way over the third base and head out of the left field.
- 15:23A two-base ball.
- 15:25We can see an argument about it now.
- 15:27They have a argument about their argument for the umpire.
- 15:32Warnocky threw about six feet over the third base and head and went way out of the left center.
- 15:36And we have two runs in and a house on third base.
- 15:41A two-base throwing here.
- 15:47He laid that butt down perfect.
- 15:49Warnocky to the fielder, which he did.
- 15:51And then through the third he found against the man coming in second.
- 15:54But he over his head and went and straight out into the garden.
- 15:57I think there should be some dispute about it now.
- 15:59Gabby Hartnett's out there arguing with the umpires.
- 16:04It was a beautiful play and from where we sit up here in the hoop, we get a nice old birthday.
- 16:11So I go back to the umpire and it's a tie.
- 16:18Reds take the world and go a score to a left, bringing the odds up to third base and nobody else.
- 16:26I think they're the bad guys and they wipe that back for the first time.
- 16:34Gabby's still arguing down there, but I guess it's going to go.
- 16:38So a few runs in, a few runs out, and a few hogs on third base by virtue of that bungee laid down.
- 16:43Warnocky two-footed and two over the third base and head, which was a two-base throw here.
- 16:53Zeke Minora has it back.
- 16:56The right hand is in.
- 17:00Strike one on Zeke Minora.
- 17:14Stretch and the pitch.
- 17:16And ball one and strike one on Zeke Minora.
- 17:19Susan Henshaw warming up for the tub.
- 17:23Warnocky finds himself in quite a mess out there now.
- 17:28A few runs in, nobody out.
- 17:29The man on third base, Zeke Minora, is back with one strike and ball one.
- 17:35Ball two, one-oh-two, strike one.
- 17:39Mr. Minora is the batter.
- 17:47Warnocky getting his signal from Gabby Harden, a wind up, and the pitch.
- 17:54And ball three.
- 17:58Ball three on Zeke Minora with strike one.
- 18:01Nobody out.
- 18:02The man on third, Zeke Wenshaw.
- 18:10And the pitch.
- 18:12And Zeke gets a hold of one, which is going foul into the lower box, to our right.
- 18:20Strike two and ball three.
- 18:26Nobody out.
- 18:27Thrower, do the nothing, ball to white stuff.
- 18:30In there happens a thinning.
- 18:36Warnocky getting ready to pitch.
- 18:40And here it is, and he fouls another.
- 18:43A second to each team.
- 18:45So it's strike two, ball three.
- 18:49Luke Atley is the next to bat.
- 18:59He cuts on the alert now, watching every movement of John Warnocky.
- 19:04And Luke fouls another over into the white stuff dugout.
- 19:09But now that there's a turn, we ball two strikes.
- 19:14And he's all done for at this.
- 19:22Nice crowd out here today.
- 19:23Perfect baseball weather.
- 19:25A little chilly up here, but nice down in the field.
- 19:28And Zeke Minora's struck out.
- 19:30For the first out in the second half of the first inning.
- 19:33Luke Atley coming to bat.
- 19:35All still on third base.
- 19:37Luke Atley, a captain back from the bothleaf.
- 19:42And Luke gets a mighty nice hand.
- 19:45That's right-handed.
- 19:47Warnocky still rubbing up that ball.
- 19:51Getting ready to pitch now, getting his sign from Gabby Hartman.
- 19:54And here it comes.
- 19:56Ball on.
- 19:57High and on the inside.
- 20:03Ball one for Atley.
- 20:08And ball two.
- 20:11That broke sharply to the outside of the plate.
- 20:14About knee-high.
- 20:18The boy's playing in close now.
- 20:21Warnocky using the rousing bag quite frequently.
- 20:26And the pitch.
- 20:30And he holds a sharply hit ball down to Billy Herman at second.
- 20:36And it develops into a two-banger.
- 20:38That ball's got the nasty hop.
- 20:40It's turned right off to Billy Herman.
- 20:45That ball would be called a hit.
- 20:47A ball that it looks like Billy could steal,
- 20:50but it's got the sharp bounce off his shoe.
- 20:52And it's called a hit.
- 20:54And Luke Atley, a captain,
- 20:56holds up a second base.
- 21:01Ball bounded high right out into the right field.
- 21:05And another run in, so it's three to nothing for the stock.
- 21:09All short and third base on that two-banger.
- 21:14Which brings us to that Jackie Hayes.
- 21:18One ball.
- 21:24Jackie Hayes a hitter.
- 21:28And he's out.
- 21:30That's the little down-to-down that went foul out into the third base coaching box.
- 21:36Ball one and strike one on Jackie Hayes.
- 21:39And one out.
- 21:40One out and three runs in for the white stocks.
- 21:47Warnocky getting a sign.
- 21:52And the pitch.
- 21:55Luke Atley taking final lead off second base.
- 22:02Ball two and strike one.
- 22:09He stands up at the plate very much like Luke Atley,
- 22:11but the same stance.
- 22:14And right through.
- 22:18Ball had a funny hop.
- 22:19Jackie Hayes with a wild swing at it and missed it a mile.
- 22:26Ball two, strike two on Jackie Hayes.
- 22:28Luke Atley on second base, one out.
- 22:31And the score is three to nothing for the white stocks.
- 22:36There's the pitch.
- 22:39Cabe Huygens calling him for the umpire pitch.
- 22:44He got that ball, his right hand went up.
- 22:46But it so happened it was ball three.
- 22:48Ball three and strike two on Jackie Hayes.
- 22:53Atley taking quite a lead off second.
- 22:56And here is the pitch.
- 22:59Gets the hole to one.
- 23:00It's a high fly out into the center field.
- 23:03He's got the run for it.
- 23:06Center field that came in for that, Oge Golan came in for it.
- 23:09But Billy Herman went back and took it just about midway
- 23:12between the second base and the center field of bleachers.
- 23:18So it's two outs.
- 23:20Jackie Hayes flying out to Billy Herman.
- 23:22And as the Jimmy Dyches is at bat.
- 23:25Score three to nothing for the white stocks.
- 23:28And two outs.
- 23:30Luke Atley still on second base.
- 23:32Jimmy Dyches at bat.
- 23:35Strike one on Jimmy.
- 23:37Right over the hardest plate about better high.
- 23:48So the second half of the first inning.
- 23:52Strike two on Jimmy Dyches.
- 23:58Two outs.
- 24:01Atley on second.
- 24:02Dyches at bat.
- 24:05Two strikes on that end of the game.
- 24:07And he's struck out.
- 24:09One down for him.
- 24:10That ends the first half, or the last half of the first inning.
- 24:16Fred Brown.
- 24:17Ladies and gentlemen, there's some hats to him and one man left on base.
- 24:20And now ladies and gentlemen, yesterday afternoon, we didn't have that,
- 24:24but this afternoon it is our pleasure to bring to you that A, that D,
- 24:29our sports announcer, the man amongst men, that outstanding man.
- 24:32Here he is in the flesh himself, Hal Huck.
- 24:35Hey, can I get my head in this boot after all of that?
- 24:38I don't want to know.
- 24:39Ooh, man.
- 24:41Hey, George, what kind of a system do you use down here?
- 24:43Oh, just, you know, it's terrific.
- 24:45This is another George.
- 24:46This is Watso.
- 24:48Gee, Watso.
- 24:49Oh, that's yours.
- 24:50I see that's the smaller system.
- 24:52Well, I see I've got a lot of competition.
- 24:54How things go yesterday here, I thought I was going to have a vacation.
- 24:57Here I am back to work again.
- 24:59No golf.
- 25:00No golf.
- 25:01No, I don't.
- 25:02Well, anyway, it's worth looking at no matter what way you look at it.
- 25:05And going into the second inning, the Cubs are in fact,
- 25:08the White Sox leading three to nothing and we're bearing down with,
- 25:11let's see, who's at that.
- 25:12Frank Demery, the first man up there, and Stratton starts to wind up
- 25:16to fit the first one.
- 25:17Croson at the fat ball inside, it caused the weight for ball one.
- 25:21One ball called.
- 25:25That's just Watso sitting down in his usual quiet manner.
- 25:28There's both two at the fast one inside on which Demery had to slip away
- 25:33from it to keep from getting hit.
- 25:35So picks it up, looks it over and calls for another one.
- 25:37We jump by arms, we toss it in, immediately throwing the other ball out of play.
- 25:41And Soos stands there, rubs the old shine off, throws the ball back out to the pitcher.
- 25:46Stratton has it and also does a little rubbing up on his own hook back to the bottom.
- 25:51It's two or nothing, a few balls and no strikes on Demery.
- 25:55First man's fat, the Cubs in the first half of the second.
- 25:58And there's strike one.
- 26:00A beauty down the middle across the letter, strike, let it go by without offering at it.
- 26:03And the count is two balls and one strike.
- 26:06Two and one.
- 26:09He hits the next one, a drive into left field.
- 26:11Radcliffe comes in nicely though and makes the catch for the first out in the second inning.
- 26:15The ball was well hit and curving a little bit towards the line,
- 26:18but Radcliffe came in, he was playing clear out to the wall
- 26:21and made the catch easily for the first out in the second inning.
- 26:24One out and Stanley Hacks comes up third baseman.
- 26:27The left hander hitter, it's all thin boy, steps up there to the plate.
- 26:30Hacks it fast.
- 26:35And he takes the first one that slips by wide across the knee for ball one.
- 26:39One ball called.
- 26:45Throws again and there's a ball inside and low.
- 26:48The count is two or nothing.
- 26:49Two balls and no strike.
- 26:54Start and goes back, he's deriding back, steps on the slab once more.
- 27:01Wines up and pitches a high ball outside for ball three.
- 27:04And it's three or nothing on Hacks, three balls and no strike.
- 27:11Three and nothing to count with the pitcher waiting out there again.
- 27:14Stands there with his back to the plate rubbing up the ball.
- 27:17And then turns around, walks slowly on the mound once more.
- 27:23As the sign winds up and pitches and the hitter gets ball four.
- 27:27It's over the plate but too low.
- 27:29And Hacks gets the base on ball to put him on first base with one out in the second inning for the Cubs.
- 27:34And Gaby Harknett, Cubs catcher, gets a hand from the Cubs fans
- 27:37and a big boo from the Saatch fans as he gets up there.
- 27:41Gaby was protesting before on the air by Warnocky claiming only one run should have come in
- 27:46when the ball that was thrown by Warnocky went into the canvas down the left field line.
- 27:51And the Saatch fans, of course, didn't like that at all and are telling him in no mean language
- 27:56every time he moves around, which is the old city rivalry, boys, the way it should be on both sides of the field.
- 28:03Start and goes the first one to Gaby who takes it for a fall.
- 28:05It's over the plate but too low.
- 28:07One ball called, Johnny Corden coaching down to first base making all sorts of wild judges to indicate that
- 28:12he thinks Gaby ought to get a hold of one.
- 28:15Stratus throws again and Leo twists away to take ball to it, inside, drops out a school of blood.
- 28:20And Luke picks it up and throws it back to the pitcher.
- 28:23Hayes dags over to cover second but akeld first as the ball drops back to the outcatcher's feet.
- 28:36Two and nothing is the count, two balls and no strikes.
- 28:39And here it is, the next one to Bonder with Strat and not down.
- 28:41He races over toward shortstop to get it but it's too late and Gaby beats it out for a base hit.
- 28:46Wooding cup runners on first and second with one out of the second inning and Johnny Gill is a bet.
- 28:55Hard smash right back at Strat and who made a courageous effort to get it knocking it down with his bare hand.
- 29:00It rolled over toward the shortstop and naturally with the ball hit straight through the box,
- 29:04Abling was tearing for second and didn't have time to stop and chipped into the infield to get the ball.
- 29:09Gaby beat it out for a base hit and cup runners are on first and second with one out of the second inning.
- 29:15And Johnny Gill, huck, he left hand and hit her up there.
- 29:18Soule suddenly calls time and asks for the pitcher to throw a couple to make sure that his hand's all right after stopping that one.
- 29:27Jimmy Dyches goes over to talk to him also.
- 29:30Bondy teams think it's okay, however, they're taking no chances.
- 29:33And Sugarcane has started to warm up John on the left field both ends just to be ready in case that Bondy does have trouble with controlling that ball.
- 29:43You know, that's a level to numb the fingers and make it a little tough.
- 29:46But he's thrown a couple and seems to think he's all right so we're ready to go again.
- 30:00Bondy's all set now, it's a throw and Johnny fouls the ball down past first base.
- 30:06Kerram's against the stand, Bond's out towards the left field line.
- 30:10Molly Stevenson warming up Frank in the right field both ends of the cup, runs in to get the ball.
- 30:16Alpire Stewart takes it and throws it all the way into the screen.
- 30:24Now Stratton swings around, he's ready once more.
- 30:27Throws on Gill, lines the ball into right field for a base hit.
- 30:30Alp is coming in on it, the runner from second is scoring.
- 30:33Run up from first, Gabby who isn't very fast on his feet, stops for second.
- 30:37Single to right by Gill, driving in Hacks, makes a score of 3-1 in favor of the White Docks.
- 30:43And leaves the cup runners on first and second with one out, one run home in the second inning.
- 30:49And Bill Jurgis is back.
- 30:51Jurgis is shortstop at the plate.
- 31:00He's a right-handed hitter, stands there waiting as Stratton gets his time.
- 31:05And the hitter hits the ball to slow Bondy back to Hayes, who's hooked it up, looks at Appling.
- 31:09He throws the first and it's a double play, a good fast double play.
- 31:13Hayes to Appling to Venura for the second and third outs in the first half of the second inning.
- 31:18And ending the inning with one run, two hits, and one man left on base for the Cubs.
- 31:28And the score is 3-1 in favor of the White Docks.
- 31:34The White Docks is back in the last half of the second inning with Sewell, Luke Sewell, the White Docks.
- 31:39Couch to the first man in back.
- 32:10First man at the bottom in the third inning for the Cubs, or rather second inning for the Stocks.
- 32:15Wait a minute, I knew I was going to keep them at bat. That wouldn't be too hot.
- 32:19Here we go in the second inning. I'll get this score.
- 32:21But it's not sort of funny to see either Chicago team hitting first in the inning.
- 32:25Here's Luke Sewell at bat to start the last half of the second.
- 32:27He hits the first pitch, a high-flying historic center field.
- 32:30Billy Herman racing back, finally calls for the ball and grabs it.
- 32:33He had to get it because neither Demery or Galan could get in quick enough to reach it.
- 32:39And so Billy Herman makes the catch pretty well out into right center, having to go a long way to get it for the first out in the second inning.
- 32:46And Monique Stratton gets a swell hand from the fans as he comes walking out of the dugout and up there toward the plate.
- 32:53Stratton at bat with one out in the second inning for the White Docks.
- 32:56The score is 3-1 in favor of the White Docks.
- 32:59And Monique gets the sign, starts to wind up.
- 33:03Pitches and it's a strike over the heart of the plate about waist-high.
- 33:07One strike to count.
- 33:11Monique waits there again, winds up once more.
- 33:14And draws and the hitter takes a strike over the heart of the plate about waist-high.
- 33:18And it's two strikes. Two strikes on Stratton.
- 33:27Down the pitcher, draws and it's 4-1. It's over the plate for Tulow.
- 33:31To the count, it's one ball and two strikes on Monique.
- 33:39One and two with the pitcher ready again.
- 33:41Starts to wind up once more.
- 33:42Throws and the hitter swings it about her down to the juggernaut who comes over fast, hooks it up nicely, throws it first, and Stratton is out for the second out in the second inning.
- 33:51And Riprat, and Riprat, feed off man and let's field her.
- 33:57Steps up there to the plate, up there to the plate.
- 33:59Rattippa back.
- 34:07Wines up, throws and Rattippa takes a strike over the heart of the plate.
- 34:10He's loosened up pretty well, although he loosened up in the first inning when they got busy on him.
- 34:14He's loosened up too much.
- 34:15The next one to follow it up the ground back in the plate for strike two, making it two strikes on the Ripper.
- 34:21Two strikes on Radcliffe. Two out in the second inning for the touch.
- 34:25They're leading the cup three to one out in the second inning for the
- 34:42one and two.
- 34:45Pitcher ready once more.
- 34:46He's winding up.
- 34:47Throwing to the ball out to right center to make the touch for the third out.
- 34:53Way out the ball was mighty well hit and Demary had to race back toward right center out in front of the scoreboard.
- 34:59He got that ball although still within about 20 or 25 feet of the scoreboard.
- 35:05So it's no runs, no hits in the second inning.
- 35:07And at the end of the second inning the White Sox are leading the cup by a score of three to one.
- 35:12Well, Fred, you got something to say here?
- 35:14I have, Al.
- 35:15Since they saw a presentation, please ring Hal Totten.
- 35:17He's coming to you as a presentation of the Voice of Labor, WCFL Chicago.
- 35:24All right, Hal, it's yours.
- 35:26Well, all right, I got it.
- 35:27In fact, I had it all the time.
- 35:28I was right over your shoulder.
- 35:31It got you out here in the cold now, Fred.
- 35:33You don't sit down there taking it like you did, taking it easy in that air-cooled studio in that hot weather.
- 35:39You remember that, George?
- 35:41Oh, boy.
- 35:42What are you moaning about?
- 35:43He used to sit here.
- 35:44Look at what he did on the day.
- 35:46One coat, one sweater, another sweater, another coat.
- 35:50And I can remember when he used to sit here and once in a while you could see him off that stock shirt.
- 35:56Here we go.
- 35:57Warnock gets out on the third inning.
- 35:58He got a nice hand as he came up there, but he winds up throws.
- 36:01And Lund swings in a ball down to Dyke's back of third base.
- 36:04Jim gets it, arches the ball across to Diamond, and Warnock is out for the first out in the third inning.
- 36:10One out in the third inning for the Cubs.
- 36:12And Augie Golan, the Cubs center fielder, steps up there, the leadoff man is back.
- 36:22Stratton stands there, getting his side, winds up and pitches.
- 36:27And here's a high-pass ball inside for Paul Watt.
- 36:30One ball called.
- 36:33Sewell suddenly walks out into the infield with a ball this time before throwing it back to Stratton.
- 36:38Comes back behind the plate again.
- 36:43And Marty steps on the slab once more, starts to wind up again, and pitches the hitter takes ball two with the curve ball down by the knees.
- 36:51And the Cubs are two and nothing on Augie.
- 36:53Two balls and no strikes.
- 36:55The Cubs in the last two innings have shown an inclination to wait this pitcher out.
- 36:59Stratton bears a strike, serving towards the hitter, straight over the inside corner, a little above the knees to run the counts, two and one.
- 37:05Two balls and one strike on Golan.
- 37:08Augie slips the dirt aside, then steps up to the plate, starts to wind up, throws, and he leans back to take ball three inside across the shoulders.
- 37:18So it's three balls and one strike on Golan.
- 37:21Augie batting left-handed, as he always does, against right-handed pitching wakes.
- 37:25Stratton winds up, throws, and the hitter swings it a high fly to right field, hos jobs in easily.
- 37:30He's waiting for it, has it, and it's two out in the third inning.
- 37:36Two out in the third inning for the Cubs.
- 37:38And Phil Cavaretta, the Cubs' first baseman, left-handed hitter, also steps up there to the plate.
- 37:44Cavaretta, taps, Stratton on the slab.
- 37:51Getting inside, starts his wind up, and throws on the hitter swings it a high fly out into short center field.
- 37:57Roden's all coming in for that, tapping, going out there, and Luke makes the catch nicely.
- 38:01Oh, he was throwing and still had his back to the infield as he caught that ball dropping out in front of him over his shoulder to make a nice play for the third up.
- 38:09And it's no runs, no hits in the third inning for the Cubs.
- 38:13His score remaining three to one in favor of the White Cubs.
- 38:16Starts the bat in the last half of the third inning.
- 38:19The first White Sox hitter, Larry Rosenthal, who seems to be the big shot in the attack for the Sox so far,
- 38:26although Appling is also keeping up with him in the hit compartment.
- 38:32Each one has made three hits in the two games.
- 38:36Let's take a look and make sure.
- 38:38Yesterday, Rosenthal had two hits and four times a set.
- 38:43Now Appling had one hit and two times a set.
- 38:45He had the two walks.
- 38:46I knew their percentage was the same.
- 38:49So Rosenthal now has three hits in the series and Appling two as far as the White Sox are concerned.
- 39:00Oh, Lucius Luke showing us no luck that he was up there leading both league and hitting.
- 39:08Last half of the third inning, Rosenthal upset Blake.
- 39:12Havki, left-handed hitter, who from all prospects should be one of the real rookies of the league year next summer
- 39:20when he gets the first full season.
- 39:21He gets the first hit to fly to left field.
- 39:23Gill is going back, grabs for the ball and makes a great backhanded catch of it.
- 39:28The only trouble was he wouldn't have to make a great backhanded catch of it if he judged it right the first place.
- 39:35Johnny went a racing way back there to the wall, but he was running almost in the wrong direction.
- 39:40And finally at the last minute, he veered over towards the foul line and made a one-handed backhanded stab of that long drive
- 39:46and held onto it for the first out in the third inning.
- 39:51And now Hasebats swings the first pitch to foul it up into the second deck and a bounce clear back out into the field.
- 39:57And it's one strike on Hasebats.
- 40:03One strike to count.
- 40:08He winds up again, throws and Muell swings and fouls the ball off the end of the bat.
- 40:13It just missed.
- 40:14Benura dashed over and hit the stand to the left of the plate and rolled back out in the field.
- 40:19Deekhudson rolls it over to the fat boy who decides it should go into the screen, not the bench.
- 40:25Rolls it over to Yonarousa down there.
- 40:27So it's two strikes, two strikes on Hasebats.
- 40:30With a pitcher waiting there again, he winds up and throws and Muell takes a wide one-long for a ball.
- 40:36And the count is one ball and two strikes on Hasebats.
- 40:39Warnock, you get the ball back from Parknett.
- 40:43Stands there, getting his sign.
- 40:44He's winding up and throws and the hitter swings to high fly out into left field.
- 40:49The left fielder, Gil, starts in on that.
- 40:51Ben changes his mind, backs up a little and has that one easily for the second out.
- 40:56So it's two out in the third inning for the White Sox.
- 40:58And Benura is at best.
- 41:09Deekh Benura up there with two out in the third inning for the White Sox.
- 41:13Warnock, he throws the first one.
- 41:15It's a strike over the inside corner, waist-high.
- 41:17One strike on Deekh.
- 41:21One strike at the count.
- 41:22Pitcher waiting out there again.
- 41:23Stands there, getting his sign.
- 41:24He winds up once more and throws and the hitter swings and misses a fastball for strike two.
- 41:31That makes it two strikes on Benura.
- 41:35Two out to the Sox in the third inning.
- 41:37White Sox leading the Cubs 3-1.
- 41:45Ready again, winds up, throws, and it's over the plate for Tulow for ball two, or ball one rather.
- 41:50The count is one and two, one ball and two strikes on Big Z.
- 41:55One and two to count.
- 41:59Warnock, he's waiting for the sign, has it, winds up again.
- 42:03Throws and the hitter takes the ball two and Hartnett wags his head.
- 42:07Warnock, he's out of play.
- 42:08That ball didn't go where he expected it to.
- 42:11Throws it back to Lahn, flips the glove up over his wrist.
- 42:14Throws the ball up a little bit, uses the rod and bag and comes back on the slab.
- 42:18Count of two balls and two strikes on Benura.
- 42:23Warnock, he again winds up, throws and Zeke gets the third ball.
- 42:27That would just barely miss the outside corner across the knees.
- 42:30And so Gaby takes the ball to look it over.
- 42:32Can't find anything wrong with it.
- 42:34Throws it back to Dick.
- 42:37Warnock, he wipes his hands dry, looks over the boys out there in the field.
- 42:44And throws the next one right inside for ball four, giving Zeke a base on ball.
- 42:50Well, well, well.
- 42:51He has two strikes on him and then threw four consecutive bad ones.
- 42:55So Benura gets the walk.
- 42:56And he's on first base with two out on the third inning and Luke appling it back.
- 43:01And Lucius Luke up there, still going like a streak.
- 43:09Warnock, he seems to have a sign.
- 43:10He's ready to pitch and throws and it's inside and low for ball one.
- 43:15One ball called.
- 43:20Five consecutive bad ones as Warnock keeps throwing out there.
- 43:22Four after getting two strikes on Benura to walk Zeke.
- 43:29And now one on appling.
- 43:31So it's one ball called with a pitcher waiting there again.
- 43:36Just as Cap swings around as he gets the sign, there's a stretch.
- 43:40The first base.
- 43:41Then throws over there, the runner just barely flipped back ahead of the throw and it was pretty dog-gone close.
- 43:47Zeke wasn't expecting that.
- 43:49And had a pretty big lead so it's had to slide back deep first to get in there.
- 43:55One ball called and the pitcher is ready now to pitch to appling again.
- 43:59Still watches the runner.
- 44:00But pitches and Luke gets an easy bounder down to Billy Herman who gets it.
- 44:04So it's the first base and it's three outs.
- 44:06No runs, no hits.
- 44:07One man left on base in the third inning for the White Sox.
- 44:11And the score is still three to one in favor of the White Sox at the end of the third inning.
- 44:19Now, well, I guess they got somebody else down there because Fred's out here.
- 44:23But at any rate, it's the end of the third inning.
- 44:26So if you want some scores of what's going on in that World Series game, we return to the studio.
- 44:33And here we are back in the studio to tell you that the Yankees are having a field day at Topolo Grounds in New York.
- 44:40Schumacher started out and was knocked out of the box.
- 44:43To be followed by Smith who was promptly also knocked out of the box.
- 44:47And the right-hander, Dick Kaufman, has finally taken a Smith place as the giant pitcher.
- 44:53Lazari-Holmert with the bases filled for the Yankees in the first half of the third inning.
- 44:58The score is now nine to one in favor of the Yankees as we come to the close of the first half of the third inning.
- 45:06That's all the scores now.
- 45:08So back to Hal Todd and Kamiske Pahl.
- 45:13Back at the ballpark for the fourth inning, the first man at bat for the Cubs is Billy Herman.
- 45:18And he followed the first pitch up against the front of the second deck,
- 45:21or up above on the right of the plate for strike one.
- 45:23One strike.
- 45:25On Bill.
- 45:28Stratton winding up again.
- 45:30Throws and the hitter takes a high one wide for ball one.
- 45:33So it's one ball and one strike on Herman.
- 45:36White starts leading three to one in the fourth inning.
- 45:43Stratton waits out there again.
- 45:45As the sidey starts to wind up,
- 45:48throws and the hitter takes a ball inside across the chest.
- 45:51And it's two balls and one strike on Billy Herman.
- 45:54Two and one to count.
- 46:05Two and one is a count and the hitter swings again
- 46:08to miss a high fast ball inside for strike two.
- 46:11And it's two balls and two strikes on Billy Herman.
- 46:19Two and two to count.
- 46:22Stratton throws again and Bill swings to hit the ball.
- 46:24Dyches takes it to his left.
- 46:26Throws hard to first.
- 46:27And Herman is out easily for the second out in the fourth inning.
- 46:31Wait a minute. First out in the fourth inning.
- 46:33I'm getting ahead of myself because I just started to look back.
- 46:36Herman has been completely stopped by the start pitchers in the two games so far.
- 46:40He got a walk in the sixth inning yesterday,
- 46:42but hasn't been on base yet today in two tries.
- 46:46And Demery is at bat.
- 46:49Bank wants the first one come over the heart of the plate and waste high for a strike.
- 46:54One strike on Demery.
- 46:59And the next one is wide and low for Bowen.
- 47:02So the count is one ball and one strike.
- 47:14One and one to count.
- 47:15The hitter follows this next one into the second deck down in front of us a little to our right.
- 47:19And it's one ball and two strikes.
- 47:22One and two on Demery.
- 47:28Stratton throws once more.
- 47:29Frank gets another ball high and wide, making it two balls and two strikes.
- 47:34Two and two to count.
- 47:37Monty goes back to use the rod and bag this time.
- 47:39Then comes back onto the rubber once more.
- 47:42They're getting a sign, start to wind up.
- 47:45And pitchers on the hitter swings the high foul going into the stands back at first base.
- 47:50Menorah comes over and is, what pose is that?
- 47:54Number seven, that one with his hand in the air as he comes over there.
- 47:57But anyway, he was shading his eyes in the sun and the ball landed pretty well back in the seats out of his reach.
- 48:04It's still two balls and two strikes.
- 48:06One and two on Frank.
- 48:08And he hits the next one for another foul into the stand to the right of the plate.
- 48:11Misses the second, then goes into the lower.
- 48:14Two balls and two strikes.
- 48:20One to the count.
- 48:27And he hits the next, a high-bounder.
- 48:29Mr. Dykes grabs for it, but it takes a high bounce.
- 48:32The nasty one hits his glove,
- 48:34bounce up back of Hapling on the runner and save at first base on what I imagine is a hit because it took a very, very bad hop.
- 48:42Just as it was about to get there, yeah.
- 48:45That's a base hit for Demery.
- 48:53Puts Plank on first base, one out in the fourth inning.
- 48:57And Stanley Hackett back.
- 48:58Stratton gets ready to pitch the first one, throws.
- 49:01When Stan hits the ball hard out into left center, Rosenthal dashes over there and makes a very, very nice running catch
- 49:07and throws the ball into second base to chase the runner back to first.
- 49:15For some reason or other they didn't have Hackett bigger just right there, I'm afraid,
- 49:18because Rosenthal was playing in death center field instead of left center where they usually play Stan.
- 49:24As a result, he had to do a terrific lot of running to get to that ball and make a sensational catch,
- 49:30but had to hit the ball right in his usual groove.
- 49:34And now Harknett takes the first pitch high and inside for ball one.
- 49:38One ball called.
- 49:40Demery on first base, two out in the fourth inning.
- 49:43One ball called on Harknett.
- 49:45Two looks the ball over, throws it back out to Stratton.
- 49:57Marty ready again, throws.
- 49:59Gabby hits the ball on the line and Appling leaps into the air to make a one-handed catch and is three out.
- 50:05Luke Appling leaps high into the air to make a one-handed stab.
- 50:09That would look like a sure line drive that time.
- 50:12And the White Sox defense again is pulling this club along,
- 50:16because Mr. Stratton has not been especially a better pitcher than Warnocky,
- 50:22but he's had much the better support, particularly in the case of Warnocky himself.
- 50:27So it's no run, one hit, one man left on base.
- 50:31In the fourth inning for the Cubs, score is still 3-1 in favor of the White Sox.
- 50:38Talking about him, the last half of the fourth with Jackie Hayes, the first man up.
- 50:59Warnocky's been out there warming up with Ken O'Day.
- 51:03Harknett's standing right back at Ken.
- 51:06And here is Jackie Hayes walking up there at the plate to be the first man at bat in the fourth inning.
- 51:13Hayes up there.
- 51:31Now the pitcher winds up, throws the first one, and Hayes takes it inside and low for ball one.
- 51:37You people probably heard this on the switchback to the studio,
- 51:40but the crowd's cheering when the third-inning score of the Yankee-Giants game goes up,
- 51:44which shows one of those old Yankee innings.
- 51:50And here's a wide one low for ball two, and the count is 2-0 on Jackie Hayes.
- 51:55First man at bat in the fourth inning for the White Sox.
- 52:02Here again winding up throws, and it's a high one inside for ball two.
- 52:07Rather over the inside corner across the chest for strike one.
- 52:11Look at the plate, not off that scoreboard. That isn't going to help any.
- 52:152-1 on their strike two, the hitter fouls the ball back to the screen, and the count is 2 balls and 2 strikes.
- 52:212-2 the count.
- 52:282-2 with the pitcher ready once more.
- 52:41Here again starts to wind up, throws, and Jackie fouls this ball into the sand to the right of the plate,
- 52:47and it's 2-2, 2 balls and 2 strikes still on Jackie Hayes.
- 52:57Ernie, well, City Series Ernie here.
- 53:01How you doing, Ernie? Coffee looks all right.
- 53:042-2 is the count, and Hayes swings the next hit, a high foul to the right of the plate.
- 53:09Cabaret is coming in from first base and makes the catch just about halfway between first base
- 53:16and the bench, and then he threw the ball to Hartley and threw it back there past him,
- 53:20and it goes on down the right field line where one of the boys from the bench catches it and throws it on in.
- 53:26And Jimmy Dyke steps up there to the plate.
- 53:39Dyke's up there at the plate with one out of the fourth inning.
- 53:43Warnocky starts to wind up, throws, and Jim swings, hit a high-bonded Jurgis,
- 53:47backs up and goes to his right a little, takes the ball, throws the first.
- 53:50Cabaret had made a swell stretch into the infield.
- 53:52He got that ball just off the ground and way into the infield, but Dyke's out for the second out.
- 53:59That makes it two out of the fourth inning for the stock, and Luke Sewell is at the back.
- 54:04Sewell up there at the plate, puts two out of the fourth inning for the white stock.
- 54:11Throws the first one, Luke takes a good strike over the heart of the plate about way past.
- 54:15One strike on Sewell.
- 54:19Warnocky again starts to wind up, throws, and the hitter takes strike two.
- 54:24Luke doesn't like that and slaps the bat on the ground a second and turns it back on the umpire.
- 54:29Oh, just barely knee-high.
- 54:31It seemed to be over the heart of the plate.
- 54:32Luke must have thought it was a little bit low.
- 54:34So it's two strikes on Sewell with the pitcher winding up again.
- 54:40Throws and the hitter takes a ball.
- 54:42It's over the plate, but this time it was too low, and the count is one ball and two strikes on Luke.
- 54:48White stock's leading three to one, last half of the fourth inning.
- 54:51Warnocky again winding up, throws, and it's ball two wide and low.
- 54:56So it's two balls and two strikes.
- 54:59Two on two on Luke.
- 55:08And the hitter starts to swing at the next, but he tried to stop, but he went on through with it, striking out for the third out.
- 55:14Tried to stop that swing, but the ball was started, the bat had started around too hard and he couldn't pull up on it.
- 55:21And so he strikes out for the third out in the fourth inning.
- 55:24No runs, no hits in the fourth inning for the stock.
- 55:28And the score is still three to one in favor of the white stock.
- 55:33Hubs coming to bat in the first half of the fifth inning with Johnny Gill the first man up.
- 55:54Should I shoot this red hot before I eat it, George?
- 55:56You think it'd be safer?
- 56:00I don't know, it doesn't seem to be particularly alive.
- 56:04It doesn't taste pretty good, I'll guarantee you.
- 56:06I wonder how I saw him when I took a mouthful.
- 56:29Well that mouthful was good, I don't know when I'll get back the next one.
- 56:32I am working here.
- 56:33Yeah.
- 56:35Gill hits the first pitch, an easy bounder down the haze, throws the first base.
- 56:39And Johnny is out for the first out in the fifth inning, bringing Bill Jorgensen back.
- 56:56Stratton winds up now, throws the first one and Jorgensen swings, hit a hard bounder down to Appleby and he gets it nicely.
- 57:02Throws the first and Jorgensen is out easily for the second out.
- 57:06That makes it two out in the fifth inning for the Cubs.
- 57:09And the next man up there, Warnocky the cup pitcher is walking slowly up in the bench.
- 57:15That's a nice hand for the fans.
- 57:17It doesn't look very much as though that very costly curve here may mean the ball game that something doesn't happen
- 57:23because since then he has gone along in great style, only one scratch hit being made off him.
- 57:31The man's first pitch, the Warnocky is a wide one for the ball.
- 57:38Stratton waits there for the next sign, has it, he's winding up.
- 57:41Throws and Dick gets ball two, it's inside across the way.
- 57:45And the count is two and nothing, two balls and no strikes on Warnocky.
- 57:49Stratton winding up, throws once more and he gets that one over the outside corner, letter high for a strike.
- 57:54And it's two balls and one strike on Warnocky.
- 57:58Two out for the Cubs in the fifth, White Sox leading three to one.
- 58:02There's ball three, a wide one low and it's three balls and one strike on Warnocky.
- 58:09Three and one to count, getting the wind up pitch and the hitter hits the ball,
- 58:13Bonder down to Dykes who got to throw the first base and Warnocky is out for the out.
- 58:21So he's halfling and Dykes all had a hand in retiring inside that time on throws to Benura.
- 58:28No runs, no hits in the first half of the fifth inning.
- 58:35And the White Sox still lead the coverage by a score of three to one.
- 58:38Stock is bad on the last half of the fifth with Monty Stratton the pitcher the first man up.
- 58:43Here goes another mouthful.
- 59:03The way this kid's been pitching since he got back in that lineup after all the operations and things,
- 59:09the kids look more and more as though the illness that caused him all that stay in the hospital
- 59:16and the long layoff to recover his strength and get back in shape
- 59:19may have cost the White Sox not only second place but possibly more
- 59:23because he certainly has been a great pitcher since he got back in there as he was before he was taken ill.
- 59:28Stratton at bat Warnocky's first pitch is a strike with a hard of the plate waste tie.
- 59:32One strike on Stratton and Warnocky winds up, throws again, Monty swings and hits the ball hard
- 59:42and Herman makes a great backhanded stop back at second base to get the ball close to first.
- 59:46Cabaretta drops it and the runner is safe.
- 59:49Herman made a wonderful stop back at second base, a great backhanded stop through the first.
- 59:55The throw is out there. There's an error charged but they haven't told us yet who is charged with it,
- 1:00:03whether Cabaretta for dropping the ball or Herman on the throw.
- 1:00:09The error is charged to Cabaretta for dropping the ball.
- 1:00:13It was a marvelous play by Herman but still drops the ball.
- 1:00:24So Stratton's on first base, nobody out of the fifth.
- 1:00:27Radcliffe hits the bounder down to Jurgis who gets it flipped to Billy Herman.
- 1:00:30He was ready to throw the first but the ball had been hit so slowly
- 1:00:33and Radcliffe was practically at first base and Bill held the ball letting Radcliffe reach first without a throw.
- 1:00:40He didn't have a chance of getting his man.
- 1:00:46So Rathbitt's on first base with one out of the fifth inning and Rosenthal is at bat.
- 1:00:56Warnocky watches first base throws and the hitter takes the curve ball wide and glows for ball one.
- 1:01:11It's already out there again. Throws and Rosenthal follows the ball back into the front of the second back down below us
- 1:01:19and it bounds back down into the field. It's one and one.
- 1:01:34One and one is the count now on Rosenthal, left handed hitter. Warnocky waits there again for the time.
- 1:01:41Swings around as he gets it and Thitches on the hitter swing did a long follow way down the left field line
- 1:01:48back underneath the second deck and he's one ball and two strikes.
- 1:02:11Warnocky steps up onto the slab again, watches the plate, puts it first and Thitches and the hitter hits the ball out through into left field for a base hit.
- 1:02:20Jorgens was playing pretty well to his left, couldn't get a hold of it because he had a long way to go and as a result
- 1:02:25the ball goes through into left field for Rosenthal's second hit of the day and fourth hit of the series.
- 1:02:32So the White Sox have runners on first and second with one out in the fifth inning and Mulehouse at bat.
- 1:02:50Warnocky ready now. Second base on Throes and Hoss takes a wide one with curving towards the plate but didn't curve soon enough and it's small one.
- 1:03:01One ball called.
- 1:03:07Warnocky throws again for ball two. It's wide and low and the count is two and nothing on Hoss. Two balls and no strikes.
- 1:03:14White Sox runners on first and second, one out and the White Sox are leading the Cubs by a score of three to one.
- 1:03:26And a pitcher stands there waiting again. Flings right back, takes another look back at second base.
- 1:03:32And Throes on, it's a strike over the heart of the plate about waist high to make the count two and one on Hoss.
- 1:03:37Two balls and one strike.
- 1:03:45Two balls and one strike and the pitcher waiting again. Warnocky has the sign, steps down the slab,
- 1:03:50back at second and Throes on the hitter swings, hit a foul. It's just up onto the roof of the stand above third base.
- 1:03:57Almost hit the front of the roof but just eased up over it and it's two and two. Two balls and two strikes on Hoss.
- 1:04:13It's like old times smelling that pipe, Gillward. I find I can still stand it, I don't know.
- 1:04:20Two and two is the count but just throws again and the hitter swings to foul the ball back to the screen.
- 1:04:24Hits still two balls and two strikes on Hoss. Remember White Sox runners on first and second, one out of the fifth inning.
- 1:04:31White Sox leading by a score of three to one.
- 1:04:40Warnocky just drives back again, ups up the ball.
- 1:04:48Around the runners then steps onto the slab and it's getting his time.
- 1:04:58And pitchers of the hitter hits the ball hard toward left field. Jurgis comes up with it nicely, throws to second.
- 1:05:02Herman Snow to first, completes the double play although Cabrata had to make a sensational reaching catch away out to the right.
- 1:05:09A fast and long double play. One of those plays that had to be made lightning fast or had been too late.
- 1:05:15And Cabrata redeemed himself that time after having let the first man get the base by dropping his throw.
- 1:05:21He made a very fine play to reach way out to the right and get Herman Tacey's throw to first to complete that one.
- 1:05:28So it's no run, one hit, one error and one man left on V.
- 1:05:34In the last half of the fifth inning and the score is still three to one in favor of the White Sox at the end of the fifth inning.
- 1:05:43Now I think Fred you've got a little message to say again, huh?
- 1:05:46Yes I have Hal Cotton. You know you've been saying that things were coming across the letters all afternoon.
- 1:05:50So supposing we say a few letters like this is the voice of labor.
- 1:05:55WCFL, Chicago.
- 1:05:58Oh I guess I see what you've got to do be a studio announcer. You've got to be able to come up with things like that quickies, huh?
- 1:06:04Oh, I get it.
- 1:06:08Should have taken longer though Fred, I'm still chewing.
- 1:06:13Here we go in the sixth inning. Galan is back, started off with the Cubs and the first pitch is too low at ball one.
- 1:06:20One ball on Galan. White Sox leading three to one.
- 1:06:26Augie swings the next at the high fly in the center field.
- 1:06:29Rosenthal is going back and he's under it now. Hevett hits one out of the sixth inning.
- 1:06:35One out of the sixth inning for the Cubs and Cabaretta is at bat.
- 1:06:41You know Cabaretta is at the plate.
- 1:06:48Yeah Mr. Rosenthal was throwing divots as he raced back to that one.
- 1:06:53Stratton throws the first one and Phil swings at a high one, tried to get around on it but he stopped it and hit it down toward the first base coaches box where Johnny Corden gets it.
- 1:07:02Throws it back to the pitcher.
- 1:07:05It's one strike on Cabaretta.
- 1:07:07That's with one out for the Cubs in the sixth inning.
- 1:07:09Stratton throws again and Phil takes the curve ball inside and low. The ball bounced into the air out of the catcher's glove.
- 1:07:15Landed out in front of the plate.
- 1:07:25And if it winds up once more, throws the other swing and fouls the ball back to the screen.
- 1:07:29And it's one and two, one ball and two strikes.
- 1:07:44One and two now with the pitcher ready again.
- 1:07:46He winds up, throws and Phil lines the ball into center field for a base hit.
- 1:07:52A single to center field by Cabaretta putting him on first base with nobody out of the sixth inning.
- 1:07:57And Billy Herman up there at the plate, Billy who hasn't had a base hit in a series so far and who had a terrific pump at the end of the season making only about two hits in his last five or six games.
- 1:08:11Herman at bat, one out of the sixth inning, Cabaretta on first base, scores three to one in favor of the white shot and Herman takes the first pitch in by his shoulders for ball one.
- 1:08:37And the ball coughs, ready again, throws for a strike, a beauty over the heart of the plate just about letter high and the hitter let it go by.
- 1:08:43So it's one and one.
- 1:08:49One and one is the count. And there is a ball wide and low making it two balls and one strike on Billy Herman.
- 1:08:56Two and one.
- 1:09:05Once again the pitch is ready. He throws and the hitter swings a high foul coming back toward us.
- 1:09:10Landed just in front of us in the second.
- 1:09:13The man caught it there and of course was catching it and landed him for a plunk back in his chair there and it's two and two on Billy Herman.
- 1:09:21Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:09:23I'll see this playing him fairly deep, a little bit to the right.
- 1:09:26Os is playing him pretty well toward the line and Rosenthal a little bit toward right center. And the next one, Herman tried to get away from it but the ball curved in and hit him on the right wrist or right hand.
- 1:09:37Charlie Grimm comes tearing into the coach's box and apparently hurt him pretty much.
- 1:09:41And Luke Sewell bends over him, Stratton comes in to take a look and the trainer, Andy Lottshaw comes running in.
- 1:09:48Woody Engert is the captain running out of the bench up there at the plate.
- 1:09:51That ball seemed to sail as it got up there at the plate. Here comes Doc Davis now, the club's position.
- 1:09:57Well, they'll have a real delegation up there.
- 1:09:59And Herman shows any signs of being hurt that way. You can count on it. He's plenty hurt because he's one of these boys that doesn't show much in the way of emotion when he gets bumped or cut or anything else.
- 1:10:10And that ball seemed to hang out there in front of him.
- 1:10:13He started to step one way and then another and then it shot in toward him and hit him.
- 1:10:18Doc Davis is now working on his wrist to see whether it might possibly be fractured or if he can see any signs of it he'll go right out of there.
- 1:10:32And they're all standing around. In the meantime, Kevred had gone to second base.
- 1:10:40And he's standing out there talking to Hapling. He's also there.
- 1:10:43Herman walks away from the crowd and stands there and leans over on his knee. Charlie Grimm talking to him, telling him if he doesn't feel all right to get out of there.
- 1:10:53And Billy probably wants to stay in.
- 1:10:57Dredden starts back to the mound to throw a few to Sewell. He loosened up there while the rest of the boys still gather around.
- 1:11:05Jimmy Dykes, the manager of the stock, is also up there taking a big look and Vanura is in there also.
- 1:11:14Herman finally decides to go on down to first base. That right arm is hanging alongside of him as he walks down there, but he gets a nice hand.
- 1:11:23Vanura walking alongside of him, the two of them talking.
- 1:11:38Well, he finally reaches first base.
- 1:11:42And the next man up there is Frank Demery. Now the White Sox start a couple of pitches warming up in the bullpen. Kane and the inevitable Mr. Brown warming up out there.
- 1:11:55And here is Demery at bat. Hub runners on first and second, one out in the sixth inning.
- 1:12:00And Demery hits the first one, a line drive to Hayes who gets it, throws back to Vanura for a double play. A line smash right into Hayes' hands.
- 1:12:08He doesn't have to move out of his tracks to get it. And a quick throw to first base. Doubles Herman and ends the threat just like that.
- 1:12:15Bang, without any delay at all at all. It's no run, one hit, one man left on base in the first half of the sixth inning.
- 1:12:26And the score is still three to one in favor of the White Sox. White Sox is bad in the last half of the sixth with Vanura the first man up there.
- 1:12:33Vanura the first man at bat. That ball was really tagged. That's the kind of a ball that all the New York writers cry about every time DiMaggio hits one and it gets caught.
- 1:12:43Oh, it was a foot to the right or a foot to the left and it would have been a two base hit.
- 1:12:47The trouble is a foot to the right or a foot to the left doesn't mean a thing if you hit it right at somebody.
- 1:12:52William English is going in to play second base now. And Billy Herman tried to throw a ball, couldn't control it, and is walking off.
- 1:12:59English is playing second base. That injury was just too much for Billy.
- 1:13:10And Herman gets a hand as he walks off the field.
- 1:13:20That's your Warnocky out there. Gets his time, stalks it, throws, and the hitter hits the ball right to the good hard line single. That ball all but took back right off.
- 1:13:29Warnocky is going to win with De'Briam. And the first base with nobody on it. White Sox with a loop pass.
- 1:13:36League leading hitter, major league leading hitter, shortstop right-handed hitter is at bat.
- 1:13:42Benura on first base. Affling up there at the plate. He has nobody out in the sixth inning. Warnocky ready. Pitches. And Affling drives the ball into right field for another base hit.
- 1:13:52Right fielder, Demery, grabs the ball, fumbles it, but picks it up again and Benura turns and goes back to second base.
- 1:13:59And it's Affling's second hit of the game and third hit of the series. So the White Sox have runners on first and second, nobody up.
- 1:14:07And Jackie Hayes is up there at the plate. Boy who has done great work a lot of part of the season.
- 1:14:14And proved at least these justified things I said about him for three or four years when he really had his chance and got in there and could bear down one of second baseman and tough hitter he is.
- 1:14:25Although not only tough this year, he hit 312 for the season, which is a lot of hits.
- 1:14:30Comes again and starts Henshaw warming up and Root, Henshaw and Root warming up in the right field bullpen.
- 1:14:38And the Sox are keeping a pitcher warmed up down their side of the field.
- 1:14:46Hayes, and now Hayes Buntz the first one, hat catcher throws the first.
- 1:14:50English gutting over there to take the stroll on the sacrifice and it moves the runners to second and third with only one out of the six innings and Jimmy Dykes always dangerous in the pinch is up there at the plate.
- 1:15:02Now we have one of those tough pitchers in the pinch against a tough hitter in the pinch and we'll see what happens.
- 1:15:08The infield playing in part way to the infield grass, not all the way.
- 1:15:12And they're going to walk Dykes and take a chance on Sewell and walk Dykes on purpose. It isn't so much to take a chance on Sewell as it is to get the bases full where fourth plays are possible.
- 1:15:23As it is now, there's no chance of a fourth play and so they want to get those bases full for that reason and gamble on that proposition.
- 1:15:30There's the fourth ball and Dykes gets the base on.
- 1:15:34He took the fourth one wide. Gaby started to throw the ball to third as Dykes walked across in front of him. He didn't intend to and so Dykes turned around and acted so he was going to be real mad at Gaby.
- 1:15:45And as he swung the back of him to throw it to the bat boy, he swung it right across in front of Leo and that caused a laugh from everybody.
- 1:15:51Now the bases are full with one out of the six innings and Luke Sewell, another dangerous boy with the bases occupied out there, takes the first pitch inside and low for ball.
- 1:16:01The infielders have moved back. That is the second baseman and shortstop move back. First and third baseman still in fairly close.
- 1:16:10He winds up once more, throws and the hitter hits a beauty into center field for a base hit and Galan races over to get it.
- 1:16:17One run in, second run scoring, Dykes pulling up at third base and the shot's single to center field by two.
- 1:16:23Scores Benura, scores Affling and puts Dykes on third base. So the White Sox have runners on first and third.
- 1:16:32One out, two runs home in the sixth inning and now leading the scubs by a score of five to one, the same score by which they won yesterday.
- 1:16:41And Monty Stratton, White Sox pitcher, is coming up there to the plate. Stratton of that.
- 1:16:48Oh, Sewell, the old Lucius Luke, same way as he did all through the season when there were runs out there to score.
- 1:16:53You could almost always count on Sewell getting a hold of one, hitting it somewhere.
- 1:16:59Stratton hits the first pitch, a drive in left field for another base hit. Gill is coming down there, the runner for first going for third.
- 1:17:05Gill gets the ball, throws it into third base. The runner bound slides in and the ball bounds out that fast third base.
- 1:17:12Jurgis gets over there, gets it, but Stratton slides into second base. Ball bounded and hits.
- 1:17:20The runner has been split into third and then as Hack stood there looking for it, Stratton's on for second.
- 1:17:25Jurgis had to come all the way over to get the ball and throw it to second base.
- 1:17:29And as a result, the runners are on second and third with another run home.
- 1:17:34Stratton's still appearing as a base hitter of considerable worth and merit as he did in that last game of the season.
- 1:17:44George, did you notice whether they called him merit on that throw in or not?
- 1:17:49Did anybody look up to see?
- 1:17:53And now Henshaw on who?
- 1:17:59Aaron Hack, for heaven's sake, they called Aaron Hack and he never had the ball in his hands.
- 1:18:05How do you figure that out? Well, that's all right.
- 1:18:08Henshaw is coming in on the infield to lead Warnocky.
- 1:18:19And Long turns and starts over to the dugout.
- 1:18:27And Henshaw, Little Roy, who is a southsider, lived out here in this part of town and went to school out here at the University of Chicago, is now pitching for the Cubs.
- 1:18:43White Sox have three runs home, one out. Dillard runners on second and third.
- 1:18:48And Radcliffe is the next hitter. Henshaw finishing the warm-up bases Radcliffe now.
- 1:19:01He comes up there. Henshaw starts to wind up, throws, and it's a very bad ball, wide and low for ball one.
- 1:19:16Wakes up there again, winds up once more. And there's ball two, another ball, it breaks too wide, and the county is two and nothing. Two balls and no strikes.
- 1:19:35Roy waiting there for the next time. He winds up. And pitches for ball three, another ball, it curves all together too wide and low, and it's three and nothing.
- 1:19:46Now in addition to the fact that Brutus stopped warming up and Bryant is warming up for the Cubs.
- 1:19:56Henshaw gets his time, winds up again, throws, and the hitter takes strike one. It's over the heart of the plate, just a little below the weight.
- 1:20:06Two run the count, it's three and one. Three balls and one strike.
- 1:20:15And ball four comes by wide and low. Radcliffe gets the base on balls and the bases are full.
- 1:20:33Rosenthal up there now, Rosenthal is back, already the leading hitter of the series and robbed one hit a little while ago on a good feeling play.
- 1:20:45Made two hits so far today, two yesterday. Larry Rosenthal is back and the first hit curves pretty wide and low for ball one.
- 1:20:53Coming up there to play and then curve very sharply and way outside. So it's one ball called.
- 1:21:10Henshaw waits out there again, gets the sign, winds up, throws for a strike over the inside corner waist high to make the count one ball and one strike on Rosenthal.
- 1:21:20One and one the count. Henshaw winds up again, pitches the hitter, follows the ball above the left of the plate into the second deck and it's one and two.
- 1:21:32One ball and two strikes on Rosenthal. One and two the count.
- 1:21:46Waiting out there again, takes quite a while, finally starts to wind up.
- 1:21:51Throws and Larry swings it a ball hard down to Cabaretta who grabs for it and it bounds away from him and gets back to Englick who throws the first to get the runner.
- 1:22:00But the runner is safe. Cabaretta after fumbling the ball started after but Englick waved him back the first and by the time he got back there.
- 1:22:10The runner is safe and is charged with another error for Cabaretta who missed tagging the bag. That rule is definitely covered when a man fails to tag a base why he is charged with an error.
- 1:22:30And now here is Mule Haas with that Haas up there at the plate. Pitch for a ball wide base and skills full.
- 1:22:43Wines up again, throws and it's a wide one low for ball two and Hartner turns around and speaks a little piece about that one.
- 1:22:59Four runs home in this inning, White Docks now leading seven to one. Jurgis comes over and talks to Henshaw for a moment.
- 1:23:11So he throws a gun and it's a strike over the heart of the plate above Nehi and Mule naturally playing the string out of ways to let it go by.
- 1:23:18So it's two and one, infield playing in very close.
- 1:23:21A spacious ball, only one out, four runs home in the sixth. Henshaw again winding up throws and it's very wide and low for ball three.
- 1:23:30Way, way outside and it's three balls and one strike. Three and one on Hart.
- 1:23:41Henshaw waiting out there again, winds up, throws and Mule gets the ball forward wide and a run is forced across the plate. A run is forced home as Haas walks.
- 1:23:52He's fifth run of the inning and the White Docks lead eight to one and English walks in to talk to Hartner at a moment and looks over towards the bench as all they may expect to try to come in there.
- 1:24:06A spacious skillful five runs home in the sixth inning. English is talking to a fireworm's feet who turns the tell field announcer what to announce and a pitcher starts to use the right field bullpen.
- 1:24:22Hartner's out there talking to Henshaw, leaning on his shoulder. Roy just, frankly, he had a curveball breaking off today.
- 1:24:29Just about as tough a looking curveball as I've looked at for a long time but he didn't have control of it and Henshaw is one of these type of young pitchers that if the control isn't there he doesn't have much chance of going anywhere.
- 1:24:43He had that ball breaking a foot to a foot and a half many times, never less than six or eight inches and breaking a little bit too far away from the plate as a result he was in the hole most of the time and ended up by walking that man to fourth in a run.
- 1:24:58However, there was a chance of his being out of the inning if Cabaret had the feel of the ball hit right at him.
- 1:25:05He wasn't charged with an error on that but he was charged with an error when he failed to touch first after taking throwback of the ball from English.
- 1:25:13Now Clay Bryant, big husky right-handed pitcher, is out there on the mound finishing his warm-up.
- 1:25:35Bryant finishes the warm-up and is ready now as Zeke Bonora steps up at the plate.
- 1:25:52Clay takes a look around to see where everybody's playing out there and now gets ready to pitch the first one to Bonora.
- 1:26:01He's up and throws and Zeke takes the curve ball wide for ball one. One ball called.
- 1:26:16Pitcher ready again, starts to wind up, throws and it's ball two. It's over the plate but too low and the count is two and nothing on Bonora.
- 1:26:31Two and nothing is the count for the pitcher ready again.
- 1:26:37And they're watching the plate, got this tiny winding up and throws and Zeke jumps back to take the third ball, a bad one and he may walk the course in another run.
- 1:26:47The count.
- 1:26:58And the next one comes down the middle for a strike. Zeke put on a big act that time, started for first base to the forefoot, cut the heart of the plate away.
- 1:27:07Couldn't have been more of a strike anyway. It's three and one, three balls and one strike on Bonora.
- 1:27:16Bryant rubbing up the ball again.
- 1:27:21And ball four comes inside and Zeke also gets the base on balls and another run is forced across the plate. Sixth run of the innings.
- 1:27:30Bringing Luke Appling to bat for the White Sox leading now by a score of nine to one in the sixth inning.
- 1:27:37White Sox leading nine to one. I guess they saw what the Yankees did down there in New York and decided they had to put on a big inning too.
- 1:27:45Luke Appling up there, Bryant starts to wind up, throws and Luke takes a high one inside for ball one. A slow ball, change of pace.
- 1:27:54Rude is warming up now for the Cubs again.
- 1:28:01Winding up, throws once more and it's a strike. Fair ball breaking away from the hitter. Caught the inside corner above wayside and make it one and one.
- 1:28:15One and one hit here. It's the next one, a beauty in the left center for a base hit. Two more runs are scoring.
- 1:28:20The runner for first, telling the third and Gil's throw is very wide. By the time Hack recovers it, Appling has raised to second.
- 1:28:29Bryant singles the left center by Appling, scoring Rosenfall is hot.
- 1:28:35With two more runs, eight runs this inning. White Sox now leading by a score of 11 to one and they still have runners on second and third.
- 1:28:51There's only one out, the one out being a sacrifice by Hayes who was not that early on the inning.
- 1:28:59It feels still playing back as Jackie takes the first hit for a strike. Over the heart of the plate, White Sox.
- 1:29:11There's the ball, making the count one ball and one strike on Hayes. One and one the count.
- 1:29:25Bryant winds up, throws again. Jackie swings in to high bounder. Bryant gets it. The runners hold their bases so he throws the first, getting Hayes for the second out.
- 1:29:35Making it two out of the seventh inning and bringing Dyches to back. Dyches up there at the plate.
- 1:29:46Dyches was walking purposely with runners on second and third earlier in the inning, but that started to get in the work when Mr. Stuhl stepped up there and smacked one.
- 1:29:57And Dyches hit the foul down to Billy Webb coaching at third. He grabs it, throws it out the hack, goes on around the covered field which still seems to be throwing a lot of fire although they're way, way behind right now.
- 1:30:15Winds up, throws again and Dyches takes a slow one, the curve ball wide for Borlewood and the count is one ball and one strike. One and one the count.
- 1:30:29Bryant throws again and Dyches falls down under one that almost hit him in the shoulders and he takes it for ball two. So the count is two balls and one strike. Two and one on Dyches.
- 1:30:45Ready once more, starts to wind up, throws and it's a ball that hits the bat and hits the ground and then bounce and falls there over to the right of the plate. It's still two and two. Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:31:02Bryant waits there rubbing up that ball pretty carefully.
- 1:31:09Finally starts his wind up and throws and Dyches.
- 1:31:17Dyches did the same thing that time he did before and he looked at the bat and he looked at the plate and he said I couldn't do it again if I tried.
- 1:31:23He starts to swing and then as he pulls back, he doesn't pull back quick enough, the ball hits the bat and bounds down onto the plate and then counts there over to the right against the stand.
- 1:31:34Two and two and there's ball three. It's inside across the way and they get three balls and two strikes on Jimmy Dyches.
- 1:31:41Three and two the count.
- 1:31:48Three and two now.
- 1:31:52He throws again and it's ball four wide and Dyches gets his second walk of the inning. Once more filling the bases for Mr. Lucia's Luke Steele. Mr. Steele is up there again of the Ohio but formerly of the Alabama Steele.
- 1:32:07He's singled with the bases full earlier in the inning to drive in the first two of these eight runs that have scored.
- 1:32:15White Sox are leading 11 to one on the last half of the sixth and Sewell takes the first pitch to curve ball wide and blow for ball one.
- 1:32:28White Sox again has the sign, he's winding up.
- 1:32:32He throws and two swing, get a pop fly which Anglic is calling for. He has it, hits three out and they finally retire the sign and the four of these White Sox fans come up with a big howl because they've been waiting for this all year, in fact for several years, very several.
- 1:32:50In the last half of the sixth inning, great run.
- 1:32:55And we see one, two, three, four, five, six, two hours and three.
- 1:33:07And the four is 11 to one in favor of the White Sox at the end of the sixth inning.
- 1:33:18First man at bat for the Cubs in the seventh will be Hack and now Mr. Stratton doesn't have a very difficult jump.
- 1:33:26One more bite of this dog down here.
- 1:33:28Hey some of the Cubs fans are f****** spinning there standing up.
- 1:33:43This isn't a hot dog, now it's an ice dog.
- 1:34:10Here we go in the seventh inning, Stanley Hack at bat for the Cubs.
- 1:34:14Stratton starts to wind up, hits here, Dan takes the curve ball and catches the outside corner knee high for a strike.
- 1:34:21One strike on Hack.
- 1:34:25Stratton throws again, hitter swings and it's a bounded out of haze and goes to his left to get it, throws to first and Stan is out for the first out of the seventh inning.
- 1:34:33One out of the seventh inning for the Cubs and Gabby Harknett is at bat.
- 1:34:52Gabby takes the first one for a strike, it's over the heart of the paper, down just about knee high, not much more than that.
- 1:35:00One strike and he hits the next one a beauty down pass, third base going on down with Radcliffe tearing over for it.
- 1:35:07Gabby makes the turn but stops it first, goes back there, one that's all comes in from Radcliffe.
- 1:35:13Gabby as we've mentioned there's no particular gazelle on his feet and while most fellas might have had a double on that, Gabby played it safe.
- 1:35:22I mean after all you've crouched around behind that plate as many years as he has and you won't be doing much gazelling either.
- 1:35:31Allen is going out there to run now in place of Harknett.
- 1:35:37Allen running for Harknett.
- 1:35:44Gabby gets the hand, the son of the fans, he walks over to the bench and Gill steps up there taking the first pitch over the plate for Tullo and it's ball one.
- 1:35:53One ball called.
- 1:36:00He throws again and Johnny fouls the ball on the ground to the right of the plate.
- 1:36:05That makes it one and one, one ball and one strike on Johnny Gill.
- 1:36:14Stratton wakes up there, slaps the ball into the glove a couple of times, uses the rising bag, steps up on the slab, swings around ready to pitch.
- 1:36:23Pitch is and it's a high one wide for ball two making it count two balls and one strike.
- 1:36:30It's a high one that's a count.
- 1:36:42Ready out there again he throws and Gill hits a long drive away up deep right field but it's foul,
- 1:36:47ball against the right field wall, wouldn't have gone in but it was outside by several feet and it's two balls and two strikes on Gill.
- 1:36:55That's the left handed hitter.
- 1:37:07Stratton used the rising bag as another ball to pick, he's ready once again, swings around as he gets the time.
- 1:37:14Pitchers and Gill swings, hit a pop ball to the left of the plate, Sewell is over there waiting for it, has it and it's two out of the sevens innings.
- 1:37:39Jurgis up there now, two out of the sevens innings of the cup, Allen running for heart and that's still on first base.
- 1:37:46Score 11 to one, over the white side.
- 1:37:54Throws and Jurg takes a strike over the outside corner about way high, one strike on Jurgis.
- 1:38:05Ready out there again, throws and he swings in a high fly to short center field, Hayes is going back, Rodenthal coming in and Jackie lets Larry come on in to make the catch after a long run for the third out.
- 1:38:17And it ends the first half of the seventh inning with no runs, one hit, one man left on base and now the White Sox crowd which is by far the biggest percentage of this audience today sets up for it.
- 1:38:30The seventh inning stretch and with a few cheers and yells they get the old kinks out of the legs as the White Sox come in there to take their turn at bat.
- 1:38:39In the last half of the seventh inning with Marty Stratton, he first man up, Stratton who as I said in the latter part of the season, last couple of games hit very well and has hit hard today.
- 1:38:54Only a great play robbed him of a base hit in the fifth and then he hit one in the sixth and hit it plenty hard to drive in a run and he later scored one himself.
- 1:39:02Ken O'Day is now out there to catch for the Cubs.
- 1:39:12And the first man at bat in the seventh inning is Marty Stratton.
- 1:39:18Were you saying you wanted to say something Mr. Fowler?
- 1:39:22Well, I'd like to say this is the voice of labor, WCFL Chicago.
- 1:39:29Well that's what you wanted to say, that's perfectly okay, I don't know why you shouldn't say it, in fact you didn't say it.
- 1:39:34Here's Stratton at bat, starts the last half of the seventh inning, swings wide and misses the first one for a strike, one strike on Stratton.
- 1:39:43Bryant waiting out there again has the sign, starts to wind up and Fitches and Marty swings in a high fly and it's left center,
- 1:39:52Gillan is jogging in under it, he's waiting has it and it's one out in the seventh inning for the stock.
- 1:40:01One on the seventh and Rip Ratscliff, White Sox left fielder, is up there at the plate.
- 1:40:07Ratscliff at bat.
- 1:40:17She winds up, throws the first one on the ripper, takes a wide one across the waist, or ball one, one ball called.
- 1:40:34If you're ready once more, winds up again, throws and it's a strike over the outside corner above the knees so the count is one ball and one strike.
- 1:40:42On Ratscliff, one and one the count, Bryant again taking that swinging wind up, throws a slow one which Rip lets float wide and low, a curved ball for ball two.
- 1:40:53And it's two balls and one strike on the ripper.
- 1:40:56Two and one the count.
- 1:41:04She winds up, throws again for ball three wide across the waist and it's three balls and one strike on Ratscliff.
- 1:41:11Three and one.
- 1:41:19Ready out there, winds up, throws again and it's a strike over the outside corner across the knees to make it three and two.
- 1:41:26Three balls and two strikes on Ratscliff.
- 1:41:30Three and two the count.
- 1:41:37She swings again to hit a barter, English is in front of it, gets it, throws the first and it's two out in the seventh inning.
- 1:41:47Two out of the seventh inning for the stock and Larry Rosenthal again is at bat.
- 1:41:54He's made four hits and eight times of bats in this area.
- 1:42:03That thing has four hits and six times of bats so he's now the senior series leading hitter.
- 1:42:09And here's the first pitch to Rosenthal to take the wide one across the waist for a strike across the outside corner at bat.
- 1:42:16That was a ball.
- 1:42:17I looked at the board, I didn't see the umpire's hand go up and the board showed a strike but they changed it to a ball.
- 1:42:22So it's ball one and there's ball two wide across the waist making it two and nothing, two balls and no strikes on Rosenthal.
- 1:42:35Two and nothing is the count.
- 1:42:36She's ready again, winds up, throws and Larry swings and this is a curve ball, a slow curve for strike one.
- 1:42:44Making it two balls and one strike.
- 1:42:50Rounds one across.
- 1:42:59All right, taking that easy wind up, throws again, Larry gets strike two, a fast one over the outside corner, a little below the waist.
- 1:43:05Making two balls and two strikes on Rosenthal. Two and two to count.
- 1:43:16She's winding up.
- 1:43:19Throws again and it's a high one that hits the catcher's glove, bounds off to the left of the plate and it's still three and two. Three balls and two strikes on Larry.
- 1:43:39Three and two is the count for the pitcher. Ready once more, he starts to wind up again.
- 1:43:46Better swing to follow ball back to the screen. It's still three balls and two strikes.
- 1:43:51Still three and two on Rosenthal.
- 1:44:04Three and two with the pitcher. Ready once more.
- 1:44:06Winding up.
- 1:44:10And he pitches for ball four, Larry gets the base on ball to put him on first base with two outs in the seventh inning on Mule Hoss, is it that?
- 1:44:21Hoss up there at the plate.
- 1:44:33Right, has the sign, he's ready to first base. Throws on the header, takes the ball at the inside of the lower deck, comes up with it ready.
- 1:44:41Finger in Rosenthal, a fast man might be on the wire, have a big lead.
- 1:44:46And of course the rumor still is naturally over in this league, statements in the national, that he's throwing as though it should be perhaps.
- 1:44:54Still watching first base. Throws on the header, takes a wide one across the knees for ball two.
- 1:45:00And the count is two and nothing, two balls and no strikes on Hoss.
- 1:45:04Two and nothing to count.
- 1:45:14Has the sign out there again.
- 1:45:17And pitches and it's ball three. Well, it's wide across the waist.
- 1:45:21Nowadays, suddenly looks at the ball after another one and without further ado umpire orange beheads it to him.
- 1:45:27Throwing the other one out from the end of, over to the socks bench without even examining it on the count is three and nothing.
- 1:45:33Three balls and no strikes.
- 1:45:43Three balls and no strikes, it's ready out there again.
- 1:45:46Throws and it's a high one wide for ball four.
- 1:45:49And Hoss also gets a base on the wall, moving Rosenfall to second base and the White Dog Dev Runners on first and second.
- 1:45:57Two out of the seventh inning and Zeke Minora is at bat.
- 1:46:01Minora out there at the plate.
- 1:46:11Out there, wipes his hands dry, swings around the flat.
- 1:46:19And the first pitch is so close to Zeke he has to ballboard ball down to get away from it and take it for ball one.
- 1:46:26Well, Dave grabs the ball, throws it back out there to the pitcher and Bryant waits there again.
- 1:46:32Swings around on the rubber, looks back at second pitches and it's ball two.
- 1:46:36It's inside and low. Bryant's control is ordinarily pretty good.
- 1:46:39But it certainly isn't out there today.
- 1:46:41He watched a couple men in his sixth inning and now he's watched two already in the seventh.
- 1:46:49As runners on first and second, it's two out.
- 1:46:52White Dog leading 11 to one.
- 1:46:54Bryant throws again and it's a strike.
- 1:46:56He's got the outside corner, crossed the shoulders, making two balls in one strike.
- 1:47:01Bryant wanted to count.
- 1:47:07And Zeke swings in a high-flying foul to the right of the plate.
- 1:47:10O'Day is jogging down there calling for the ball, holds it, and it's three out, ending the seventh inning.
- 1:47:18No runs, no hits, two men left on base for the White Dog.
- 1:47:24And at the end of the seventh inning, the White Dogs are leading the Cavaliers by a score of 11 to one,
- 1:47:31a rather overwhelming margin in any man's league.
- 1:47:36Now somebody's trying to come to bat in place.
- 1:47:42Little are coming to bat in place of Bryant in the last half of the seventh inning.
- 1:47:53Around the first half of the eighth inning, I'm still as tired to figure out what team is up to start an inning.
- 1:47:59When you talk about Cubs or White Dogs, you always figure them, the second team at best.
- 1:48:06The start of the eighth and Willard is batting for Bryant.
- 1:48:15Right-handed hitter, that's up there to the plate.
- 1:48:23And Stratton's first pitch is inside and low for 4-1.
- 1:48:28One ball called.
- 1:48:31On he winds up again, throws, and the hitter takes a strike over the inside corner waist high,
- 1:48:35and the count is one ball and one strike on Willard.
- 1:48:39One and one to count.
- 1:48:42Ball to a curved ball, very wide and low runs, the count is two and one, two balls and one strike.
- 1:48:52On Kesselstein again, winds up, throws, and Jeans swings in a slow-bounder down the third base line.
- 1:48:58Dyches comes in nicely and fires the ball across the infield with Benoit digging it out of the dirt
- 1:49:03and hanging onto it for the first out in the eighth inning.
- 1:49:06One out in the eighth inning for the Cubs.
- 1:49:09And Augie Gelland, leadoff man and center fielder, steps up there to the plate.
- 1:49:13Gelland is back.
- 1:49:22One of the warm-up balls in the stock bullpen.
- 1:49:28Come on, brother, got clear off the back of some shortstop position in left field,
- 1:49:31so they had to call time while Affleck went back to get it and throw it over to warm-up catcher there.
- 1:49:38Now Gelland watches the first pitch come over the outside corner a little above the knees for strike one.
- 1:49:43One strike to count.
- 1:49:47Winds up again, throws, and it's a slow one that clips inside and low for ball one.
- 1:49:52Make the count, one ball and one strike on Gelland.
- 1:49:56One and one to count.
- 1:49:58Throws once more and Augie gets the ball two wide and low.
- 1:50:02So it's two balls and one strike.
- 1:50:07Two and one, with the pitcher ready again.
- 1:50:10Waits out there for the sign. He has it. He's winding up.
- 1:50:13Throws and Augie gets the third ball wide.
- 1:50:16And it's three balls and one strike on Gelland.
- 1:50:19Three and one.
- 1:50:22Starting winding up. Throws again and Augie gets the second strike.
- 1:50:25It's over the outside corner, waist high.
- 1:50:28And Augie, who made the usual start, first comes back to the plate.
- 1:50:32And one, three and two rather.
- 1:50:35And Gelland swings at an easy parter off the haze and gets it on the second hop.
- 1:50:39Throws to first and Augie is out for the second out of the eighth inning.
- 1:50:47Two out of the eighth inning for the Cubs.
- 1:50:49And Cabaretta is up there at the plate.
- 1:51:01Cabaretta swings and drives the ball into center field for another base hit.
- 1:51:06Here's the second hit of the game.
- 1:51:10And it puts Phil on first base with two out of the eighth inning.
- 1:51:13And Woody English up there. Woody who replaced Billy Herman after Herman was hit in the right arm or wrist with a pitch ball.
- 1:51:28Throws the first one and Woody gets a good strike. It's over the heart of the plate, a little above the knee.
- 1:51:32One strike on English.
- 1:51:38Ready once more. Throws and Woody takes a wide one and catches the ball to first.
- 1:51:42But Cabaretta went back standing up, hitting a throw.
- 1:51:45He was all ready to slide but he saw that dual throw was a little bit low and outside the bag.
- 1:51:50So he came in standing up.
- 1:51:52It's one and one, one ball and one strike on English.
- 1:51:57And he hits the next for a high foul down the right field line and back into the stands.
- 1:52:01Cabaretta was around second base but he turns and scrolls back to first.
- 1:52:06Quite a scramble for that ball down there in the stands.
- 1:52:10One on three to count, one ball and two strikes.
- 1:52:23And Woody started for the next one but stopped and pulled back to take it inside across the way for the second ball.
- 1:52:29And there's two balls and two strikes on Woody English.
- 1:52:32It's back for the cover from the east and he was two out. Cabaretta on first base.
- 1:52:36White stock leading 11 to one.
- 1:52:41Trotting ready again, scrolls and it's ball three high and inside. Run the count of three and two on Ellie. Three balls and three strikes.
- 1:52:55Trotting, opens the ball up a little bit then walks back onto the rubber. He's ready to pitch one small.
- 1:53:01With a runner on the go on the three and two count, the inter hits another small.
- 1:53:05One of the fans missed the ball over there and it bounded out of his hands. Started bounding along the front.
- 1:53:12Just under the railing, just before dropped over, some other fan managed to grab it and keep it upstairs.
- 1:53:21Three and two is the count but you're ready again. Rolls and English hits a high fly in the right field.
- 1:53:26Hart is going back under it, still going back and Bradford has hit his club and bounds over against the stand.
- 1:53:32English pulls up at second base and Cabaretta is going and it's a long two base hit.
- 1:53:39It's a base to the hole in right field. Hart seems undecided for a moment and then when he did start going back, as Hart think he could go, he couldn't quite reach it and he hit his club.
- 1:53:49So a little forceful and deliberate George, he catches the ball down. Isn't it? No. It must be change. As soon as you open the door I can tell which one it was.
- 1:54:03And now Demery at bat takes the first one for a strike over the outside corner above Mihai.
- 1:54:09One strike count, going now 11 to two in favor of the white shot.
- 1:54:14English on second base, two out one run home and Demery takes the ball wide and the count is one and one.
- 1:54:22One ball and one strike on Demery.
- 1:54:32Demery swings around ready, one more throw and Frank hits a pop fly out, back to bat, Link Lucas back in the grass calling for the ball he has it and it's three out.
- 1:54:45In the eighth inning, one run, two hits, one man left on base.
- 1:54:50In the first half of the eighth inning, over the cup and going into the last half of the eighth the score is 11 to two in favor of the white shot.
- 1:55:04Charlie Root, better in right hander, the cup is walking in to resume the pitching chores and Charlie Grimm is waiting out there.
- 1:55:13Charlie gets a hand from the fans and feeds them out.
- 1:55:44Charlie's going through his warm up up there.
- 1:55:49With Appling standing over here with his hand on his hip, leaning on the bat, watching him.
- 1:55:53He'll be the first man to stay tuned.
- 1:55:56This is by far not Charlie Root's first city series game.
- 1:56:03Charlie finishes the warm up and Luke steps up there to the plate.
- 1:56:08Appling starts the last half of the eighth inning.
- 1:56:17Starts to wind up, throws and Luke jumps back to take a ball inside and low for four one.
- 1:56:23One ball called.
- 1:56:26Winding up the game, Pitcher, Appling hits an easy boundary back at Root who gets a full depression.
- 1:56:35Appling is out for the first out in the eighth inning.
- 1:56:39One out in the eighth inning for the white shot and Jackie Hayes is at bat.
- 1:56:47He winds up and throws and Jackie swings it high flat out into center field and Galan racing in makes the catch for the second out.
- 1:57:03He had to go pretty well over toward right center to make that catch on the run.
- 1:57:07And it's two out in the eighth inning with Jimmy Dykes now at bat.
- 1:57:23Luke gets the time, starts to wind up, throws and Dykes swings and misses a curve ball for strike one.
- 1:57:30Strike on Jim.
- 1:57:40One strike to count, gets ready out there once more, takes the time, gets the time, starts to wind up, throws and it's a wide one across the way for a ball making it one strike on Dykes.
- 1:57:54And there's a strike over the line of the plate waste time making it one and two.
- 1:58:02One ball and two strikes on Jim.
- 1:58:05One up to the count.
- 1:58:09And the hitter swings, the next one, the hitter slow bounded on the third base line, Hack comes in, makes a one handed pick up, throws the first and as Cabaret had dumped them all up in front of the runner, Jimmy almost knocked him over and he beats it out.
- 1:58:23Four base hit.
- 1:58:29Dykes is on first base, two out in the eighth inning and Sewell is at bat.
- 1:58:47He takes the first one for a ball and Roof walks back onto the mound again.
- 1:58:58And the hitter hits the next one, a drive in the center field but Galan is waiting for it out there, has it, and it's three out, ending the eighth inning with no runs, one hit and one man left on base for the white shot.
- 1:59:13And at the end of the eighth inning, the white shots are leading the Cubs by a score of 11 to 2.
- 1:59:28The Cubs are about a quarter of an inch out there now, getting ready to pitch the ninth inning, which should be the last half inning, judging the way things are going and the way he's been going, which is in good shape.
- 1:59:43The Cubs are about a quarter of an inch out there now, getting ready to pitch the ninth inning, which should be the last half inning, which is in good shape.
- 1:59:58For somebody down here, one of the doctors got to get in touch with some of the office department.
- 2:00:13Here's Stanley Hackenbatten who starts the ninth inning for the Cubs.
- 2:00:17Bratton stands there getting his time. Throws and it's a strike over the heart of the plate about knee high, one strike on Hack.
- 2:00:31And there's a ball inside and low, so the count is one ball and one strike on stance.
- 2:00:36One and one to count.
- 2:00:41And he swings again to foul one into the stand of the left of the plate. One ball and two strikes on Hack.
- 2:00:48One and two to count.
- 2:00:57Bratton winding up, throws again and Hack takes a high one wide for ball two.
- 2:01:01And it makes it two balls and two strikes on stance.
- 2:01:07One to his account.
- 2:01:15And a hitter hits the next one, a ball in the back over the pitcher's head and goes through in the center field for a base hit.
- 2:01:20Single to center field by Hack, putting him on first base to open the ninth inning and bringing Ken O'Day, who has taken over the catching tour,
- 2:01:27sends hard net gateway to a pinch runner in the seventh. Ken O'Day at bat.
- 2:01:38Bratton ready, throws the first one and O'Day takes a curve ball inside and low for ball one.
- 2:01:43One ball called.
- 2:01:51Throws the next one and Ken swings it, a boundary down to Hayes to get to throw to second base.
- 2:01:57Appling throw to first is too late to get the runner there and Hack is forced at second to play going Hayes to Appling for the first out in the ninth inning, leaving O'Day on first base.
- 2:02:09It's one out and Johnny Gill is at bat. Gill up there at the plate.
- 2:02:20Gill at bat but you're ready out there again.
- 2:02:25And hitter swings to ball this one into the stand above and to the left of the plate and it's one strike.
- 2:02:31One strike on Gill.
- 2:02:36Ready out there once more, throws and Johnny falls this one back onto the net back of the plate.
- 2:02:47One strike to the count but a pitcher waiting out there again.
- 2:02:51Johnny swings around to get the sign, throws and it's a ball that gets away from Sewell, bonds off to the right but not far enough to let the runner advance and so it's one and two still strikes.
- 2:03:09Johnny Gill on first base with one out of the ninth inning for the Cubs, White Sox leading 11-2.
- 2:03:17Finally has each side again, takes another look at first and throws and a hitter hits the ball hard into right field for a base hit.
- 2:03:23O'Day makes the turn at second, keeps right on for third, Hoss gets the ball and throws it in to second base.
- 2:03:29Single to right field by Gill, here's second hit of the game, moving O'Day to third and bringing Bill Jurgis to bat.
- 2:03:39Jurgis up there at the plate.
- 2:03:50Jurgis the line foul into the box, he's down just beyond the duck-duck out back of first base.
- 2:03:57Apparently everybody got out of the way of it before that ball went in there like a bullet and it's one strike.
- 2:04:07And a hitter hits the next one to drive in the center field for a good clean base hit, one run is in and Gill keeps right on and pulls up at third base.
- 2:04:17Single to center field by Jurgis and currently Charlie Grimm is going to bat now in place of Charlie Rue.
- 2:04:23Jurgis single to center, scores O'Day, third run of the game making it 11 to 3.
- 2:04:32And Grimm is giving a hand to the fans as he walks out of the duck-out.
- 2:04:37Some fans who are letting their rabidness, giving a little bit of the better of their sporting spirit are uttering a few boos and there's no need for such a thing.
- 2:04:52The runner's up there batting now in place of Charlie Rue.
- 2:04:57The runner's on first and third and he hits the first one and he's bound it back at Stratton who gets it, throws hard to second base and the throw to first base.
- 2:05:04It's a double play and the game is over.
- 2:05:06Benora comes running in throwing the ball into the air and tearing for the bench and it's a double play. The play going from Stratton to Appling to Benora for the second and third outs ending the ninth inning in the starts when 11 to 2.
- 2:05:23In the ninth, comes at one run, three hits, one man left on base.
- 2:05:27And the total for the ball game, White Sox had 11 runs, nine hits, no errors.
- 2:05:40Where's, let's see, one, two, three, nine men left on the bases.
- 2:05:46The Cubs had three runs, let's see there, two, three, four, five, six, seven, ten hits and four errors with six men left on the bases.
- 2:06:03The time of the game an hour and 58 minutes.
- 2:06:06The winning pitcher was Stratton and the losing pitcher was Warnocky.
- 2:06:12The totals again giving the White Sox two games to nothing lead in the 30 series.
- 2:06:18White Sox had 11 runs, nine hits, no errors with nine men left on the bases.
- 2:06:23The Cubs had three runs, ten hits, four errors and six men left on the bases.
- 2:06:28Time of the game one hour and 58 minutes.
- 2:06:30The winning pitcher was Stratton and the losing pitcher was Warnocky.
- 2:06:36Tomorrow the same two teams play here at Comiskey Park also on Sunday, third and fourth games of the city series.
- 2:06:45We won't be on the air with it tomorrow, will we George?
- 2:06:48Because it seems that we've got a little football to do out to that good old Northwestern.
- 2:06:53You'll be comforting my old pal Dick Hanley and in the next few days I'll be bearing down on one of our other stations.
- 2:07:01So I mean we'll have a lot of fun out there, but that includes the broadcast.
- 2:07:05The Mornow is a little bit late today, but he got his whistle in just in time to get on the air.
- 2:07:10So the final score today, 11 to 3.
- 2:07:14That means that the White Sox have won two games in a row and tomorrow they're going to try to make it three.
- 2:07:19Well the Cubs have really got to come back tomorrow and do something.
- 2:07:21Fourth game on Sunday, we will be with you then, won't we?
- 2:07:24Okay, games at two o'clock tomorrow on Sunday, but that's all for now.
- 2:07:28So Hal Cotton is speaking for George, old Uncle George and his Pike here.
- 2:07:32Trying to bid you good afternoon from Comiskey Park and return to the studio.
- 2:07:36Bye now.
- 2:07:49WCFL in Chicago.
- 2:07:51No, you save money, Bob.
- 2:08:03Hal Cotton presents, great and everyone to meet the studio's present, Hal Cotton.
- 2:08:08When you eat a bowl of Kellogg's cornflakes, millions of other people are also enjoying them.
- 2:08:14The Kellogg's company of Battle Creek, Michigan, buy only the best of ingredients.
- 2:08:20The products are manufactured in the spicken span plant and they're packed in the big,
- 2:08:24white, red and green packages with the patented inner white type wrapper, made fresh and kept fresh.
- 2:08:31Kellogg's cornflakes have that Kellogg's flavor, which has been famous since 1906,
- 2:08:36the year that the original cornflakes were introduced.
- 2:08:39They're toasted to a crispness at last.
- 2:08:42Try Kellogg's cornflakes for breakfast tomorrow.
- 2:08:44They are especially good with some preserved fruit or honey,
- 2:08:48and they're a great time for that after school lunch for the children.
- 2:08:51But when you go to your grocers, always be sure, never say cornflakes, say Kellogg's.
- 2:08:58And now, here's Hal Cotton.
- 2:09:00Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.
- 2:09:02Tonight's the night the American Leaguers say, I told you so.
- 2:09:06All you American League fans get busy and chortle because, well,
- 2:09:12because it was an American League day all the way down the line.
- 2:09:16From there, Yankees evened up the series with the Giants,
- 2:09:19and if there was any doubt about their evening it up, well, the score was 18 to 4.
- 2:09:24Of course, the last six of those eight runs were made in the ninth inning, but they were made.
- 2:09:29The Yankees had 18 runs, 17 hits, and no errors for the Giants,
- 2:09:33four runs, five hits, and one error.
- 2:09:36The batteries for the Yankees, Gomez and Dickey, for the Giants, Schumacher, Smith,
- 2:09:43Hoffman, Gabler, Gumbert, and Mancuso.
- 2:09:49Here in Chicago, the White Sox made it to two straight over the Cubs,
- 2:09:53winning also very decisively 11 to 3.
- 2:09:56The White Sox had 11 runs, nine hits, no errors.
- 2:10:00The Cubs three runs, ten hits, and four errors.
- 2:10:04The batteries for the White Sox, Stratton and Sewell,
- 2:10:08Warnocky, Henshaw, Bryant, Roof, and Hartnett, O'Day.
- 2:10:16I don't know just what to say about those things, and yet I guess I do.
- 2:10:22That Yankee game down there in New York, when the Yankee power really started to turn down the heat,
- 2:10:27more or less Lee Ferraro should say emphasized the fact that the Giants are really,
- 2:10:34in this series, won Carl Hopper.
- 2:10:37It's pretty hard to say at any time that a ball club is no stronger than any one man,
- 2:10:44but if Schumacher can't do it and Smith couldn't stop them,
- 2:10:48then I don't know what they can expect in a case like this.
- 2:10:54For the simple reason that now Hopper is almost certain they've got to come back tomorrow.
- 2:10:58There's a good chance he won't. That's true.
- 2:11:00There's a good chance somebody else needs a pretty good,
- 2:11:03for Fitzsimmons pitches tomorrow, great chat for him.
- 2:11:07If he's Yankees turned down the heat today, he might very easily lose.
- 2:11:11Then Hubbell comes back with a full three-day rest, and they can't very well use him again in the series.
- 2:11:17If Hubbell tomorrow, with two full days of rest, and here sometimes in a very down situation like this,
- 2:11:23he can do that, and although you'll find Hubbell and others even doing it here this season,
- 2:11:28then if Fitzsimmons might come back and do it, somebody else, maybe Schumacher,
- 2:11:34and between the two of them win one game, then Hubbell gets another crack at them after two more days' rest,
- 2:11:40and they might be back in there. You can't ever tell.
- 2:11:43So it looks as though it's on Hubbell's shoulders and practically no one else.
- 2:11:49Here in Chicago, the collapse of the Cubs' defense has been probably even more startling
- 2:11:57than the collapse of the Cubs' much-heralded pitching staff.
- 2:12:01So the pitching staff certainly hasn't held up, and yet in yesterday's game in which Lee lost,
- 2:12:06the defense collapsed to start him on his way, and in today, the very first inning, the defense collapsed,
- 2:12:13and then the big eight-run, sixth inning, the defense was also very poor.
- 2:12:18The Cubs coming up with four errors today, two in that inning, to make it just too bad.
- 2:12:24And in the first inning it did, but when those white-stock hitters started to take cracks at Warnocky
- 2:12:32in the sixth inning, there was no one known as two of the most dangerous hitting teams in the American League
- 2:12:40find this National League pitching not so very difficult after all, although, as I said,
- 2:12:45it is to be seen in the composite box score of the two-game Yankee composite box score first.
- 2:12:52You find the Yankees of the team hitting.329 in two games, while the Giants of the team are hitting only.231.
- 2:13:00The strange part of it is, these fellows and health fellows who have made hits in eighths,
- 2:13:05three hits in eighths, hitting.364, hit to.9444.
- 2:13:09Ott with two hits and six trips is.333.
- 2:13:12Mancuso with two hits and five trips is.400.
- 2:13:16And Jackson is the only regular under.300, and he has one hit in eighths times at bat with 125.
- 2:13:25I mean by that the only regular who has made a hit.
- 2:13:28Hubbell himself has a batting average of 500 with his two hits and four times at bat.
- 2:13:33And Davidson, there's a pinch hitter today, made a hit to have a batting average of 1,000.
- 2:13:37But Moore has been held hitless in ten times at bat, Lieber in four, Ripple in two, and Whitehead in seven.
- 2:13:45Now compare that to the fact that the Yankees find only one man who has engaged in either of these two games
- 2:13:54that hasn't made at least one hit.
- 2:13:56And that is Charlie Ruffing, the pitcher who pitched the opening game of the series and was shut out in three times at bat.
- 2:14:02In fact, he struck out two of those three times.
- 2:14:05So everybody in the lineup, including Gomez, the pitcher today, has had something to do in the batting line.
- 2:14:14Now when you have the hitting running all the way up and down the line that way, it's pretty tough.
- 2:14:18The most sensational showing at bat so far in the World Series is Jake Powell,
- 2:14:24a fellow who really wasn't figured so seriously at the start.
- 2:14:27As a matter of fact, some people weren't sure that he would be regularly in there, although it was practically certain.
- 2:14:33But Powell, a boy who came from Washington in the deal for Ben Chapman this year, is hitting 714, just a mere 714.
- 2:14:41He's made five hits in seven times at bat and has gained a couple of walks.
- 2:14:46Other sensational averages, Ruff has three hits in seven times at bat, and Frank and Joe have four in nine times at bat.
- 2:14:55Other fellows are all below 300, and that leads me to say another thing.
- 2:15:01Two of the biggest guns of the Yankee attack have been held below 300, and they're not going to stay there, at least one of them.
- 2:15:08So in other words, they've won this one game to even it up without the really serious services of Lou Gehrig,
- 2:15:16who has made two hits in eight times at bat, and Dickie, who has made two in nine times at bat,
- 2:15:21that they're almost bound to get before the series is over.
- 2:15:24The big shot today, of course, was Lazeri, whose lone hit of the series, giving him an average of 143,
- 2:15:31happened to be a home run where the base is full, which is a lot of home runs in any league.
- 2:15:37Gomez came up with a base hit, and so he's very happy tonight.
- 2:15:41The White Sox come series, we find not quite a striking situation, but still bad enough.
- 2:15:48The White Sox are hitting 231 as a team, with Appling topping the list,
- 2:15:53rather tied with Rosenthal at the top of the list, with four hits in eight times at bat.
- 2:15:58Each of them has two base hits.
- 2:16:01The Sox is third with two hits and six times at bat, with 333 average, and all the rest of them under 300.
- 2:16:07Stratton, the pitcher, made a hit today to have an average of 250.
- 2:16:12Benura has one hit and six trips with 167.
- 2:16:15Radcliffe, one hit and seven trips with 143.
- 2:16:18And Hayes and Sewell each have one hit and eight times at bat with 125.
- 2:16:22So their hitting hasn't been overpowering, but the club pitching has been so bad,
- 2:16:27and their defense so bad, their five errors in two games and 12 passes in two games,
- 2:16:33making it, or giving the Sox an opportunity which they haven't overlooked.
- 2:16:37The club batting average is only 209 as a team, which is not very good.
- 2:16:43The Giants are hitting 231 as a team, which ties the present White Sox.
- 2:16:49The leader of the club is Woody English, who has made one hit in his only appearance for a perfect average.
- 2:16:54But of those who have been in the game, in both games,
- 2:16:58Gill, making four hits and eight times at bat, has an average of 500.
- 2:17:02Hack, with two hits and six trips, has 333.
- 2:17:06Hartnett, with two hits and seven trips, 286.
- 2:17:09Cavaretta, with two hits and eight trips, 250.
- 2:17:11And then on down, Demery has only one hit and seven tries.
- 2:17:15Galan and Jurgis, one and eight.
- 2:17:17And the rest of them haven't hit.
- 2:17:18So you find the same weakness in the club team that the Giants are showing,
- 2:17:23the same strength in the Sox team the Giants are showing,
- 2:17:26and that is that everybody putting here has had something to do.
- 2:17:29Only two of the White Sox players haven't made at least one hit.
- 2:17:33Hoss, who has been up six times, and Kennedy the pitcher, who was up four times yesterday.
- 2:17:38Whereas of the clubs, Herman, Warnocky, Lillard, O'Day, Grimm, Lee, and Carlton,
- 2:17:45who have been at bat anywhere from one to five times, haven't made a base hit.
- 2:17:50Before we go any farther, I do want to remind you of one thing,
- 2:17:54and that is remember what we said last night.
- 2:17:56The baseball player who won the Kellogg's Most Valuable Player contest
- 2:18:02will be announced Monday night, the winner of the player winning the Pontiac Sudan.
- 2:18:07And then if possible Monday night, or if they haven't been able to figure through all the letters by that time,
- 2:18:13at least within the next two or three days after Monday,
- 2:18:16the main prize winners of the fans who wrote in will be announced.
- 2:18:21And also every single person who voted in the contest is going to receive by mail
- 2:18:26a complete list of all the prize winners.
- 2:18:29And if you know how many thousand that involves, it would give you a big kick.
- 2:18:33The scoring today started in the very first inning here at Comiskey Park.
- 2:18:37Radcliffe, the leadoff man for the Sox, walked and went to second on Rosenthal's single.
- 2:18:42Hoss laid down a bunch toward third base, and Warnocky went over there and got it in with plenty of time
- 2:18:47to get Radcliffe at third base.
- 2:18:49He'd had him by eight feet, but he had one of those things happen like Cavaraddy did yesterday,
- 2:18:54and threw the ball clear down to the canvas down the left field line with a result
- 2:18:58that both Radcliffe and Rosenthal were able to score, and Hoss reached third.
- 2:19:03Warnocky looked like himself in striking out Fenora and making Appling hit a ball toward Herman,
- 2:19:08but it was hit a little to Billy's right, rather hard hit, and crammed off Herman's glove for a scratch double,
- 2:19:14putting Hoss across the plate.
- 2:19:16The Cubs got one of those back in the second inning with one out when Hack Watt went to second on Harknett's scratch hit
- 2:19:21and scored on Gill's single.
- 2:19:24The big blow-up, however, came in the sixth inning, and after pitching great ball,
- 2:19:29allowing only one hit after the first inning and that coming in the fifth,
- 2:19:33Warnocky really was tagged and tagged plenty.
- 2:19:36Benura opened the inning with a resounding single to center.
- 2:19:39Appling single to right, putting Benura on second.
- 2:19:42Hayes sacrificed the boys along.
- 2:19:44Dykes was purposely tagged, filling the bases.
- 2:19:47Sewell single to center, as he so often does in the clinch,
- 2:19:50scoring Benura and Appling to third, and then when the throw-in got away from Hack,
- 2:19:56Stratton went to second.
- 2:19:58This after he'd won, I tell you which much, a hard hit on the halfway,
- 2:20:02Sewell got away from Cavarrette, didn't kind of throw to fill at first,
- 2:20:06and still gets pushed in.
- 2:20:07Another run was getting forced in.
- 2:20:09Newt Fitcher came in, and then Appling single to right to end that big run,
- 2:20:13one of the eights, went second time on English,
- 2:20:16down English, opened with a single, but was forced to surround it by O'Day,
- 2:20:20who was in in there, and O'Day went to third on Gill's single and scored on Georgia's hit.
- 2:20:24That's all low, and tomorrow they play the third game of the series.
- 2:20:28But, of course, do you get something to say?
- 2:20:30Now, you know people often say the way to generality and value is to look forward.
- 2:20:34We invite you to think about that.
- 2:20:36That's just it, that's a part of the feature that makes it easy going outside parking.
- 2:20:41Just a zip of your thumb and press door up off the lid.
- 2:20:44Inside, Appling, to protect the flavor and freshness of the face.
- 2:20:48The watchtights are found only on Tellon products.
- 2:20:51Open that, then notice how uniform those delicious toasted, but how perfect each one is,
- 2:20:57wonderfully fresh and good they smell.
- 2:21:00Things perhaps, but they mean careful manufacturing and hot.
- 2:21:04The next time you buy cornflakes, get Tellon.
- 2:21:07And the stomach.
- 2:21:09Tellon presents Hal Totten with his inside story on baseball each day at this time, except Sunday.
- 2:21:15The National Broadcasting Company, WENR, the voice of service in Chicago.
- 2:21:20At this time, we leave the air in favor of WLF.
- 2:21:23Thank you for watching.
