- 0:05Speaker 1: Hello, Friday.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Great to see you. Good to be on the verge
- 0:10Speaker 2: of another weekend. And glad to have you with us
- 0:13Speaker 2: as well. Good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to the program here
- 0:16Speaker 2: on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone. And where
- 0:19Speaker 2: you can always listen to us absolutely free of charge
- 0:22Speaker 2: via the iHeartRadio app. My name is Craig Wade. Glad
- 0:25Speaker 2: to have you with us today on a Friday. I
- 0:28Speaker 2: always say it every Friday that if Friday is your
- 0:32Speaker 2: traditional work Friday... like it is for a lot of folks,
- 0:37Speaker 2: then good on you. Good for you. And I hope
- 0:39Speaker 2: you enjoy the weekend. For those of you for whom
- 0:41Speaker 2: Friday is the middle of your work week, hopefully we
- 0:44Speaker 2: get you over the hump there. And as my producer,
- 0:47Speaker 2: Jake Herman, points out, he knows some people who begin
- 0:50Speaker 2: their work week on Friday. Those poor souls.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Yeah, we missed our Tuesday window of congratulating those people again.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm getting to the finish line there, you know,
- 1:00Speaker 2: on Tuesday. But we'll do that next Tuesday. So hopefully
- 1:03Speaker 2: your work week gets off To a good start. We
- 1:05Speaker 2: have a lot of things on board here for Friday.
- 1:06Speaker 2: It's a Fire Me Up Friday, so some of our
- 1:09Speaker 2: music return cuts will feature some of that. Here in
- 1:14Speaker 2: the 2 o'clock hour, talking some college football, some interesting
- 1:20Speaker 2: points that have been made in a couple of the
- 1:22Speaker 2: online things. Now, the first college football weekend is truly
- 1:27Speaker 2: upon us. I actually watched some parts of of some
- 1:34Speaker 2: college football games last night. Yeah.
- 1:36Speaker 4: There were some, some FCS games, some lower division games.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I did. I did actually watch, um, you know,
- 1:43Speaker 2: and I, and I skipped around because I know how, how,
- 1:46Speaker 2: how folks can be, how people are when I tell them, Hey,
- 1:49Speaker 2: I watched, uh, you know, whatever I watched, uh, um,
- 1:53Speaker 2: who was it that I was watching at one point
- 1:55Speaker 2: last night, I was watching Furman against Anderson and I watched, uh,
- 1:59Speaker 2: the Paladins.
- 2:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:00Speaker 2: And then I watched a little bit of, um, a
- 2:04Speaker 2: couple of other FCS teams, and I know some folks
- 2:07Speaker 2: would say, why in the world are you watching that?
- 2:09Speaker 2: I watched some of that, but I watched a goodly
- 2:14Speaker 2: chunk of high school football that was televised last night,
- 2:18Speaker 2: including the game, or half a game as it turned
- 2:22Speaker 2: out to be, between Eastview, you know, from Georgetown, and
- 2:28Speaker 2: Cedar Ridge from Round Rock. That was the KBVO game.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Big game of the week with my colleagues, Roger Wallace
- 2:33Speaker 2: and Keith Moreland. And Roger will join us in the
- 2:36Speaker 2: 3 o'clock hour, not only to talk about the bizarre
- 2:39Speaker 2: set of circumstances that happened in the reduction of and
- 2:45Speaker 2: truncating of that game last night. We'll get his thoughts
- 2:49Speaker 2: on that, but also we'll talk about some of the
- 2:51Speaker 2: other teams because they've got another game tonight. They do
- 2:54Speaker 2: a live telecast on KBVO on Thursday nights and then
- 2:57Speaker 2: on KXAN +. the streaming outlet for them. They stream
- 3:04Speaker 2: a game, and they're going to have the renewal of
- 3:05Speaker 2: an old rivalry, Leander and Pflugerville, tonight at the Pfield
- 3:09Speaker 2: in Pflugerville, as I like to say. Now I'll wipe
- 3:12Speaker 2: off the microphone. So we'll visit Raj, and we'll talk
- 3:15Speaker 2: Longhorns with Raj as well and a couple other things.
- 3:18Speaker 2: So we'll do that. But it is the start of
- 3:23Speaker 2: a college football weekend, as we know. The headline game
- 3:26Speaker 2: would be TCU and North Carolina in Ireland. Take a
- 3:30Speaker 2: look at that. There's a couple of other games to
- 3:32Speaker 2: mention because it is the quote-unquote zero week of college football.
- 3:37Speaker 2: We're also going to hear from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian,
- 3:40Speaker 2: who was on the third and Longhorn podcast this week.
- 3:44Speaker 2: So we're going to hear from Sark on that. So
- 3:49Speaker 2: that's coming up as well. We do have inconceivable here
- 3:53Speaker 2: in this first hour on a Friday. Jake, we know
- 3:55Speaker 2: what Friday with inconceivable refers to and it is inclusive of.
- 3:59Speaker 3: Inclusive of a one-way ticket down to the Sunshine State,
- 4:03Speaker 3: also known as the most flaccid of the lower 48,
- 4:05Speaker 3: where you can always find the low-hanging fruit on a
- 4:09Speaker 3: Florida Man Friday.
- 4:10Speaker 5: Yeah, it is.
- 4:11Speaker 2: And hopefully it's just not a one-way ticket. Hopefully folks
- 4:14Speaker 2: can escape and get back from it. Well, sure. Sure.
- 4:18Speaker 4: You might not want to come back if you hear
- 4:19Speaker 4: what's going on down there.
- 4:20Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Yesterday on the program, we visited with Gene Watson, our
- 4:27Speaker 2: MLB insider. He was still in Japan. Uh, and Gino
- 4:31Speaker 2: is right in the middle of the flight home. Uh,
- 4:34Speaker 2: you talk about your body clock getting, uh, taken for
- 4:36Speaker 2: a ride, uh, by they took, by the time they
- 4:39Speaker 2: took off, uh, I think it was, uh, about eight
- 4:46Speaker 2: o'clock last night, but when they land in Houston, when
- 4:49Speaker 2: he lands in Houston, It's going to be about, I
- 4:53Speaker 2: think he said about 645 this evening. So it's going
- 4:58Speaker 2: to be a long turnaround for him.
- 4:59Speaker 1: All right.
- 5:00Speaker 2: The other thing that we're going to get to in
- 5:02Speaker 2: the four o'clock hour, I don't know if you got
- 5:04Speaker 2: a chance to hear the conversation this morning. We bring
- 5:08Speaker 2: you the Dan Patrick show. in the mornings here, following
- 5:11Speaker 2: the morning kickoff with, you know, of course, Mike Hardball-Harge
- 5:14Speaker 2: and Mark Henry, the world's strongest man. And, you know,
- 5:16Speaker 2: they give you the three-hour variety now. You get the
- 5:18Speaker 2: full Monty. You get the three-hour tour beginning at 6 a.m.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Monday through Friday. And always great to hear those fellows
- 5:27Speaker 2: getting your day off to a good start. That's 6
- 5:29Speaker 2: to 9. And then we bring you Dan Patrick from
- 5:32Speaker 2: 9 to 11 before we get to Colin Cowherd. Dan
- 5:35Speaker 2: Patrick this morning had Bijan Robinson on his show. And
- 5:38Speaker 2: we're going to bring you that conversation in the 4
- 5:43Speaker 2: o'clock hour and let you hear a little bit of
- 5:46Speaker 2: Bijan's mindset now in the National Football League. He just
- 5:52Speaker 2: signed that massive contract, which made him the highest paid
- 5:57Speaker 2: running back in NFL history for about a week or
- 6:00Speaker 2: several days until Jameer Gibbs got his deal, I guess
- 6:02Speaker 2: it was. But it's still a massively big deal.
- 6:08Speaker 5: Deal.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Uh, but Dan Patrick has a lot of fun with
- 6:10Speaker 2: him asking about his running back heroes and, uh, the
- 6:14Speaker 2: kind of thing they get into this stream of consciousness
- 6:16Speaker 2: about Bijan wanting to throw an option pass. And, uh, it's, he, well,
- 6:25Speaker 2: I'll let him explain it, but you know, Kevin Stefanski,
- 6:28Speaker 2: of course, is the Falcons new head coach. And so
- 6:30Speaker 2: there's this, A little bit of politicking going on by
- 6:33Speaker 2: Dan Patrick. Get him to put it in a playbook
- 6:36Speaker 2: to let you have an opportunity. So we'll get to that.
- 6:41Speaker 2: That's coming up in the 4 o'clock hour. So a
- 6:43Speaker 2: lot of things, as always, on the program. Now, I
- 6:45Speaker 2: wanted to start off with some college football because there
- 6:51Speaker 2: are some games on the schedule this weekend. But also
- 6:55Speaker 2: there was an interesting piece. I noticed it this morning
- 6:59Speaker 2: from Bill Conley, you know, the veteran college football writer
- 7:05Speaker 2: for ESPN. And he had an interesting, because, you know,
- 7:08Speaker 2: we're seeing these interesting pieces that come out right before kickoff.
- 7:11Speaker 2: You know why that is? Because the mundane pieces, the
- 7:14Speaker 2: regular rankings and blah, blah, blah, those have already been written.
- 7:18Speaker 2: They were writing those in June and July and early August.
- 7:21Speaker 2: And now these guys are dealing with the necessity of,
- 7:27Speaker 2: of this final weekend without a full slate of college
- 7:32Speaker 2: football games to come up with creative pieces. And he did.
- 7:36Speaker 2: This one is a piece about who could be the
- 7:41Speaker 2: next first-time national champion. And the headline is, After Indiana,
- 7:50Speaker 2: Who Could Be College Football's First Next First-Time Champion? national champion.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Cause as we talked about length yesterday, the, the, you know, Indiana, uh,
- 8:01Speaker 2: you know, through some people for a loop. And last
- 8:03Speaker 2: night I was on a podcast, uh, with a good friend,
- 8:06Speaker 2: John Medani, who is a senior producer, uh, for ESPN radio.
- 8:09Speaker 2: I was on with John and with, uh, Kent Cohen,
- 8:12Speaker 2: who has worked in the market for a long time.
- 8:14Speaker 2: So I've known that those guys have been friends and
- 8:15Speaker 2: colleagues of mine for years. And, uh, they do a podcast, um, uh, and, um,
- 8:24Speaker 2: And so I had a chance to be on with
- 8:26Speaker 2: them last night, and we talked at length about all
- 8:32Speaker 2: that stuff going on with the legal battles, and that's
- 8:38Speaker 2: taken another turn that we'll get to as well. with
- 8:42Speaker 2: regard to whether players can leave NFL tryouts or NFL
- 8:47Speaker 2: rosters and return to college after the SEC, the Big Ten,
- 8:51Speaker 2: the ACC, the Big 12, and others have said, nope,
- 8:54Speaker 2: can't do it. A judge last night in Dallas said, yes,
- 8:57Speaker 2: you can. So that's just the latest thing. I told you,
- 9:00Speaker 2: and it was hardly an original thought on my part,
- 9:06Speaker 2: all I was doing was echoing what a lot of
- 9:07Speaker 2: folks said. And I've been saying this for about the
- 9:09Speaker 2: past week when this thing really started to percolate, that
- 9:13Speaker 2: this is tip of the iceberg and that this is
- 9:17Speaker 2: going to be dragged out in the courts. It will
- 9:21Speaker 2: be for some time. The interesting thing will be what
- 9:26Speaker 2: will be the turnaround on this deal punitively for teams
- 9:34Speaker 2: like LSU who are bound and determined to get those
- 9:38Speaker 2: guys on the field, on the roster, and use Daquan
- 9:43Speaker 2: Wright on the field? And will there be repercussions from
- 9:48Speaker 2: the NCAA? And would that initiate another round of legal stuff?
- 9:53Speaker 2: So that's a completely different issue, and we'll you know,
- 9:58Speaker 2: break that down as we have again. Also, we're going to,
- 10:03Speaker 2: I mentioned Roger Wallace didn't high school football last night.
- 10:07Speaker 2: They'll do so again. And I will tell you about
- 10:09Speaker 2: some of the biggest matchups. Well, we'll just tell you
- 10:12Speaker 2: what the computer is saying about the matchups for the
- 10:17Speaker 2: first week of the high school football, including, Jake Herman's
- 10:22Speaker 2: game tonight over Montgomery is Jake will head over there
- 10:26Speaker 2: to call the matchup between Bastrop and Montgomery, Lake Creek.
- 10:31Speaker 2: So Bastrop against Lake Creek on Vibe, right? That's right.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Free to watch, Vibe Live, YouTube.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Okay, so there you go. I'll tune in and watch. Oh, good.
- 10:41Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:42Speaker 2: We'll tell you what the computer thinks of that matchup.
- 10:45Speaker 2: This is something that we do every week throughout the
- 10:47Speaker 2: high school football season. We tell you what the computer is.
- 10:49Speaker 2: It is not for wagering purposes, even though there are
- 10:53Speaker 2: point differentials listed. I'm uncomfortable saying point spreads because it's
- 11:00Speaker 2: a projection from a computer from our friend Jerry Forrest
- 11:05Speaker 2: who has this massive computer with pigskin prep based out
- 11:08Speaker 2: of the Waco area. and it's a subscription-based service. And
- 11:13Speaker 2: what the computer does is it spells out how much
- 11:19Speaker 2: better one team is supposed to be than another. So
- 11:26Speaker 2: we'll get the computer's thoughts on some of these week
- 11:29Speaker 2: one matchups. There were week one games last night, and
- 11:34Speaker 2: we'll get to all of that.
- 11:34Speaker 3: So If you're using these for any other purposes besides projection,
- 11:39Speaker 3: you don't need our text line.
- 11:41Speaker 4: You need the hotline.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Gamblers Anonymous and that sort of thing. Our good friend,
- 11:46Speaker 2: Jeff Howell, who I used to host a show with,
- 11:50Speaker 2: said that, he said, you laugh when I told him
- 11:53Speaker 2: about this. And we used to do what the computer said.
- 11:55Speaker 2: You laugh. He said, but I guarantee you, there's some
- 11:59Speaker 2: old boys sitting down. It used to be a convenience store.
- 12:01Speaker 2: I don't think it's there anymore in Florence called D Boone's.
- 12:04Speaker 2: He used to say, there's some guys sitting in the
- 12:05Speaker 2: back room back there at D-Booms, and they're discussing whether
- 12:11Speaker 2: there's a wager or two to be laid down on
- 12:13Speaker 2: like a 3A Division II game. So we'll try to
- 12:18Speaker 2: dissuade you from that. This is for the purposes of
- 12:21Speaker 2: just telling what the computer thinks of each of these
- 12:24Speaker 2: teams and what might happen. So we get to all
- 12:27Speaker 2: of that. As always, glad to have you with us.
- 12:30Speaker 2: It is a fire me up Friday here on Sports
- 12:32Speaker 2: Radio AM 13 under the zone of the iHeartRadio app. Well,
- 12:36Speaker 2: this is Friday night. I crashed your party. We're crashing
- 12:39Speaker 2: your Friday afternoon party here. Offering from the great Billy Joel.
- 12:43Speaker 2: You may be right. They're off the glass houses. That
- 12:47Speaker 2: was the noise of the glass shattering there. Great album
- 12:51Speaker 2: cover with him with a big rock in his hand
- 12:52Speaker 2: getting ready to throw it in a glass window.
- 12:54Speaker 3: That's what every minor league stadium in America has adopted
- 12:58Speaker 3: on the foul ball that leaves the stadium.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, that's right.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Yeah, they do it at Dell Diamond as well.
- 13:03Speaker 4: I hope that wasn't your car.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Yeah, but if so, go down to Joe's Glass Repair.
- 13:09Speaker 4: They'll get you right.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. Um, let's start off, however, uh, listening, uh, to, uh,
- 13:16Speaker 2: some comments from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkisian. Now he
- 13:19Speaker 2: was on the third and Longhorn podcast on Tuesday. And
- 13:22Speaker 2: so Sark was asked, um, that, uh, he was, uh, the,
- 13:29Speaker 2: about the consistency factor and, uh, you know, how have
- 13:35Speaker 2: your teams been, uh, In terms of the consistency factor
- 13:39Speaker 2: at Texas compared to what he had, say, at Washington
- 13:42Speaker 2: before he even went to USC.
- 13:44Speaker 6: I think just that, Fozzy, you know, like I was
- 13:46Speaker 6: thinking back, you know, 2009, I became the head coach
- 13:50Speaker 6: at University of Washington. And I was 33 when I
- 13:54Speaker 6: got the job. I was 34 for my first game.
- 13:58Speaker 6: And I think about those first five years and that
- 14:00Speaker 6: five-year run at Washington. And I mean, I coached hard,
- 14:03Speaker 6: don't get me wrong. And I was trying to be
- 14:06Speaker 6: creative and then we were recruiting really well, we're doing that.
- 14:08Speaker 6: But my messaging was not consistent to your point. And
- 14:11Speaker 6: my approach on a daily basis wasn't consistent. And so
- 14:15Speaker 6: the result was our team was not consistent and not
- 14:19Speaker 6: consistent equals inconsistent, right? And so- This time around, third
- 14:24Speaker 6: time around being a head coach, like that was part
- 14:26Speaker 6: of it. And part of that was my time with
- 14:27Speaker 6: Coach Saban. And that guy was a model of consistency
- 14:31Speaker 6: every day. You knew exactly what you were going to
- 14:33Speaker 6: get out of him. And he was true to himself.
- 14:35Speaker 6: I've learned to be true to me, but yet there's
- 14:38Speaker 6: a level of consistency. I think people know what to
- 14:40Speaker 6: expect from me every single day. And if they know
- 14:43Speaker 6: what to expect from me, then they know what I
- 14:46Speaker 6: expect from them. And not everybody's perfect. And we all
- 14:49Speaker 6: have some days a little better than others. But when
- 14:51Speaker 6: there's a level of consistency in that approach, I think
- 14:54Speaker 6: then ultimately the play results in consistency in play. And
- 14:59Speaker 6: we aren't perfect, but you have a pretty good idea
- 15:02Speaker 6: of what you can expect when we take the field
- 15:04Speaker 6: every Saturday.
- 15:06Speaker 2: He was also asked about that culture word. You know,
- 15:09Speaker 2: coaches love to do it and to talk about team culture.
- 15:12Speaker 2: And Sark is no exception to the rule. It means
- 15:15Speaker 2: an awful lot to him. He'll say the culture and
- 15:18Speaker 2: hard work will outlast talent in a lot of cases
- 15:23Speaker 2: if the talent isn't properly motivated and is driven and
- 15:26Speaker 2: all that kind of stuff. He was asked about the
- 15:28Speaker 2: team culture that sets this group apart in camp.
- 15:33Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 15:33Speaker 6: You know, this team, I'm going to dive a little
- 15:36Speaker 6: bit into this team because I think this team is
- 15:40Speaker 6: really embodying the culture that we want. And every year
- 15:45Speaker 6: is a little bit different. You know, personalities are different.
- 15:47Speaker 6: The personalities of the leaders are different. But this team
- 15:51Speaker 6: is really unique. When you think about all of the
- 15:53Speaker 6: new faces that we have, I think there's 49 new faces.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Bianca's got to fact check me on that.
- 15:58Speaker 6: But But what do our leaders look like? And you
- 16:02Speaker 6: think about Arch, year four in the program. Trevor Goosby,
- 16:06Speaker 6: year four in the program. Jelani McDonald, year four in
- 16:09Speaker 6: the program. Colin, year three in the program. Ryan Wingo,
- 16:13Speaker 6: year three in the program. Connor Robertson, year five in
- 16:17Speaker 6: the program. You start to look at the core leadership
- 16:21Speaker 6: on this team, guys who have grown up in this
- 16:24Speaker 6: culture and know what the expectation is of the culture.
- 16:28Speaker 1: That's one piece of it.
- 16:30Speaker 6: Then it's the buy-in from the other guys. And you
- 16:33Speaker 6: think about the 49 new faces, half of those being transfers.
- 16:37Speaker 6: And I credit the transfers for coming in with the
- 16:40Speaker 6: mindset of this is a championship program. And yes, I
- 16:44Speaker 6: came here because of opportunity. Yes, I came here because
- 16:48Speaker 6: of scheme. Yes, I came here because, hey, you guys
- 16:52Speaker 6: know me, I'm very transparent. NIL was good, right? Like
- 16:56Speaker 6: maybe not the best, but it was good comparatively. But
- 16:58Speaker 6: I came here because I wanted to compete for a championship.
- 17:01Speaker 6: I came here because I want to be playing in
- 17:03Speaker 6: December and January and not watching from my couch. And
- 17:06Speaker 6: those guys have bought in. Cam Coleman, Hollywood Smothers, Raleigh Brown,
- 17:11Speaker 6: Michael Masunis, Melvin Ciani, Rasheem Biles, Bo Masco, and I'm
- 17:17Speaker 6: just naming a few. So I credit those guys for
- 17:19Speaker 6: buying into the culture.
- 17:20Speaker 4: Then.
- 17:22Speaker 6: When your leaders are living the culture, your transfers are
- 17:26Speaker 6: living the culture, then here comes this freshman class, very
- 17:30Speaker 6: talented freshman class. They're like, oh, wait, I wanna be
- 17:34Speaker 6: really good. I recognize those guys are really good. That's
- 17:38Speaker 6: how they act on a regular daily basis. I'm gonna
- 17:41Speaker 6: go emulate that. I wanna be like that. And so
- 17:44Speaker 6: whether it's D'Abel, Jermaine Bishop, so Derek Cooper, I can
- 17:48Speaker 6: go down the line. that freshman class has bought into
- 17:51Speaker 6: the culture. Like we have very few issues because so
- 17:55Speaker 6: many guys are just like, this is how we do it.
- 17:58Speaker 6: This is the way we're going to go do it.
- 18:00Speaker 6: And D, you've been around us enough to know we
- 18:03Speaker 6: have a lot of fun. I think sometimes you hear
- 18:06Speaker 6: culture and you think boring, stiff. We are not that way,
- 18:11Speaker 6: but yet there's a belief in the program and there's
- 18:13Speaker 6: a belief in the way that we go about our
- 18:15Speaker 6: business on a regular basis, all the while having a
- 18:17Speaker 6: lot of fun doing it. And so I credit kind
- 18:20Speaker 6: of layers in that locker room to get this culture
- 18:23Speaker 6: in a place to where I really like this team.
- 18:26Speaker 6: And every year as a coach, you know, every coach
- 18:30Speaker 6: can tell you that I love every team.
- 18:31Speaker 1: You do?
- 18:33Speaker 6: It's like your kids, man.
- 18:34Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 18:36Speaker 6: You like some a little more than that for varying reasons.
- 18:39Speaker 6: And yeah, we're a talented roster. Don't get me wrong.
- 18:42Speaker 6: I'm not naive to say, hey, well, we'll be okay.
- 18:45Speaker 6: We're a talented team, but the culture is what makes
- 18:48Speaker 6: this team special. Now we got to put it all
- 18:50Speaker 6: together and we got to go play the games and
- 18:52Speaker 6: do those things. But the culture to me has been
- 18:54Speaker 6: a huge component of that.
- 18:57Speaker 2: We'll hear some more from Sark coming up a little
- 18:59Speaker 2: later on in the program. I want to go back
- 19:00Speaker 2: to this piece that I was mentioning. And again, that
- 19:04Speaker 2: was from the Third and Longhorn podcast that Sark was
- 19:07Speaker 2: on earlier this week. Okay. This piece written by Bill
- 19:11Speaker 2: Conley was, after Indiana, who could be the first college football,
- 19:19Speaker 2: the next, first time? college football national champion. And he
- 19:25Speaker 2: starts off by saying Indiana's 2025 national title was jarring
- 19:29Speaker 2: in about 100 different ways that the losingest major program
- 19:33Speaker 2: in the sports could win it all meant that in
- 19:36Speaker 2: this new era of college football, possibilities are endless for
- 19:38Speaker 2: a program that can hire well and invest properly. Again,
- 19:41Speaker 2: that was one of the things I was saying on
- 19:42Speaker 2: the podcast that was on last night and what we've
- 19:44Speaker 2: said here. If Indiana can do it, a lot of
- 19:48Speaker 2: programs can do it. Maybe not all, but a lot
- 19:51Speaker 2: of them. can do it. He said, sure, it helps
- 19:53Speaker 2: quite a bit if you're in one of the nation's
- 19:55Speaker 2: two richest conferences, and it certainly doesn't hurt to have
- 19:58Speaker 2: a spectacularly huge alumni base just waiting to be inspired
- 20:02Speaker 2: enough to spend lots of money, as Indiana's evidently was.
- 20:06Speaker 2: For all of the extreme losses in the Hoosiers' history,
- 20:09Speaker 2: there was a sleeping giant element here that not too
- 20:12Speaker 2: many other programs can match. He said, still, When Kurt
- 20:17Speaker 2: Cignetti lifted the national title trophy and cracked a beer,
- 20:20Speaker 2: remember he did that as well afterwards, it signaled a
- 20:23Speaker 2: moment of hope for a number of programs. College football's
- 20:27Speaker 2: ruling class is a pretty exclusive party, and the Hoosiers
- 20:30Speaker 2: were the first time national champs since Steve Spurrier's 1996
- 20:35Speaker 2: Florida barged through the door almost three decades earlier. So
- 20:40Speaker 2: he goes on to do some other things. He said
- 20:43Speaker 2: the first team on the list is extremely obvious. Things
- 20:45Speaker 2: get interesting. After that, the first team on his list
- 20:49Speaker 2: is Oregon. And they've had 13 AP top 10 finishes,
- 20:55Speaker 2: including number two in 2001, 2012, and 2014. So it
- 21:00Speaker 2: says for number one here, there's no tension whatsoever. Oregon
- 21:03Speaker 2: is obvious. The Ducks reached the national title game in
- 21:07Speaker 2: 2010 and 2014, and it finished second in the poll
- 21:09Speaker 2: three times in the century. So with what they have
- 21:11Speaker 2: coming back, yeah, they're going to be one. He has
- 21:13Speaker 2: Texas Tech number two. Their peak ranking was number seven
- 21:18Speaker 2: last year as well. And he said, the power of
- 21:20Speaker 2: the checkbook has allowed tech to cut in line. Going
- 21:24Speaker 2: strictly by the metrics above, the Red Raiders should be
- 21:27Speaker 2: around sixth on the list, even with an emphasis on
- 21:30Speaker 2: 2026 projections. But with big spending and incredible talent evaluation,
- 21:35Speaker 2: Joey Maguire's program surged to a number of firsts last season.
- 21:39Speaker 2: First Big 12 title, first top 10 finish, first college
- 21:42Speaker 2: football playoff berth, et cetera. No matter how much Last
- 21:46Speaker 2: year's roster cost, a large percentage of transfers Tech added
- 21:50Speaker 2: to its 2025 roster outperformed any production at previous stops.
- 21:55Speaker 2: For the moment, at least, the Red Raiders staff gets
- 21:57Speaker 2: the full benefit of the doubt. This program is loaded
- 22:00Speaker 2: and prepared to make a number of runs at CFP
- 22:03Speaker 2: berths in the coming seasons. It stinks that you might
- 22:06Speaker 2: need a sugar daddy oil billionaire to compete for a
- 22:08Speaker 2: title if you aren't in the Big Ten or SEC,
- 22:11Speaker 2: but Tech has won, so that's a problem.
- 22:15Speaker 3: Other programs put that on a game day sign sugar
- 22:17Speaker 3: daddy oil billionaire and.
- 22:19Speaker 2: There's the poster shot of Cody Campbell at that point right.
- 22:22Speaker 4: Sure yeah or the cover of Dave Campbell's Texas football.
- 22:24Speaker 2: Magazine absolutely um okay uh number three is Ole Miss
- 22:28Speaker 2: 13 AP top 10 finishes their peak was last year
- 22:32Speaker 2: uh 2025 he says Ole Miss's place on this list
- 22:36Speaker 2: is blurry as it claims yeah I was a little
- 22:40Speaker 2: bit I was a little bit skeptical when I read
- 22:43Speaker 2: this this morning about this, because Ole Miss claims national championships,
- 22:47Speaker 2: three of them, 59, 60, and 62. For whatever it's worth,
- 22:52Speaker 2: the Rebels were first in the ESP Plus in four
- 22:55Speaker 2: of those five seasons between 59 and 62.
- 22:57Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm sure that was a big part of the
- 22:59Speaker 4: national conversation back then.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Right, but it's never finished atop the poll, so here
- 23:02Speaker 2: they are. And considering they basically finished one place short
- 23:05Speaker 2: of a spot in the national title game, they're capable
- 23:07Speaker 2: of a huge run. If you look at Ole Miss'
- 23:09Speaker 2: media guides... And I've read, you know, in all of these,
- 23:13Speaker 2: they claim national championships. Kind of like how Texas A
- 23:17Speaker 2: & M has claimed some in some years on that.
- 23:19Speaker 2: But they do have legitimate reasons on some of that.
- 23:23Speaker 2: All right, number four, Iowa. He said that Iowa, another
- 23:27Speaker 2: program with a few historic title claims but no top
- 23:30Speaker 2: pole finishes, has the best average SP plus rating of
- 23:34Speaker 2: any team here over the last 10 years. But only
- 23:36Speaker 2: the fifth best peak tells a pretty clear story. Kurt
- 23:39Speaker 2: Ferentz's Hawkeyes. have generated a level of consistency that few
- 23:43Speaker 2: programs ever see, winning between eight and 10 games in
- 23:47Speaker 2: 11 of the past 13 seasons and claiming a top
- 23:50Speaker 2: 15 defense for 11 straight years. When the breaks go
- 23:52Speaker 2: their way in close games, they win 10. When they don't,
- 23:55Speaker 2: it's more like eight. Keep that up and they'll reach
- 23:57Speaker 2: the college football playoff pretty soon. So we had them
- 24:00Speaker 2: number four. He's got Missouri number five, which kind of
- 24:03Speaker 2: surprised me a little bit, but said that Eli Drinkwitz
- 24:08Speaker 2: has them trending upwards. Louisville is number six, Utah seven,
- 24:13Speaker 2: Illinois eight, uh, SMU number nine.
- 24:17Speaker 4: By the way, I'm in on SMU this year.
- 24:19Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 24:19Speaker 3: Everyone forgot about Kevin Jennings.
- 24:22Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 24:23Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 24:23Speaker 2: And he's, uh, I didn't forget about it. Cause I
- 24:26Speaker 2: called a state championship game. Dude can play.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:28Speaker 4: Well, you never forget any sports game.
- 24:30Speaker 2: Well, when he played at South Oak cliff and led
- 24:33Speaker 2: them to their first ever state title, that was something else.
- 24:36Speaker 2: But anyway, um, Wisconsin is number 10. South Carolina, number 11.
- 24:43Speaker 2: I think they might be picked and finished like 11th
- 24:45Speaker 2: in the SEC.
- 24:46Speaker 3: Well, but I was listening yesterday to Todd McShay tell
- 24:50Speaker 3: me Lenora Sellers could be the best quarterback in the class.
- 24:52Speaker 2: Now that I won't disagree with. I think he could
- 24:56Speaker 2: be something special. When we had Todd Ellis on the
- 24:59Speaker 2: play-by-play voice of the Gamecocks, he talked about how incredible
- 25:02Speaker 2: that guy is. And he just didn't have a good
- 25:03Speaker 2: enough offensive line last year and was running for his life.
- 25:06Speaker 3: Bryles offense is score so we'll see if that if
- 25:09Speaker 3: that turns things around for them this year they could
- 25:11Speaker 3: be that could that season could go any number of ways.
- 25:13Speaker 2: That's kindle bryles yes uh our bryles by the way
- 25:16Speaker 2: he is back in coaching coaching eastern new mexico in
- 25:19Speaker 2: the lone star conference so he'll be out in portales
- 25:22Speaker 2: new mexico uh coaching this year sounds pointy uh virginia
- 25:27Speaker 2: is number 12 on his list I'm a little bit
- 25:30Speaker 2: in on Virginia. Now, we'll find out a little more
- 25:32Speaker 2: about it. They play tomorrow. And it's kind of a
- 25:34Speaker 2: weird deal there that we'll get to with their game tomorrow.
- 25:37Speaker 2: And it's a conference game, no less. Houston, 13, coming
- 25:42Speaker 2: off what they did last year. He said over the
- 25:43Speaker 2: last 12 months, Willie Fritz and Houston have proved capable
- 25:47Speaker 2: of both winning double-digit games— the Cougars were 10-3— last year
- 25:52Speaker 2: and signing five-star quarterbacks. Landing Keyshawn Henderson, the number four
- 25:57Speaker 2: prospect of 2026, was a statement of intent, as was
- 26:00Speaker 2: the ambitions of a high-level and surely pretty expensive transfer
- 26:04Speaker 2: class that included three all-conference FBS offensive linemen and former
- 26:08Speaker 2: Fritz player and Tulane star Makai Hughes. The fundamental numbers
- 26:13Speaker 2: shown aren't particularly great, but Houston's aiming high.
- 26:16Speaker 3: I'm telling you right now, Houston, Utah, October 24th, with
- 26:20Speaker 3: how both of those schedules kind of shake out favorably
- 26:23Speaker 3: in the Big 12, that's a big game.
- 26:26Speaker 2: It is. It'll be an even bigger game if Houston
- 26:29Speaker 2: wins in Lubbock in Week 3.
- 26:30Speaker 4: Well, yeah, I was kind of penciling that one in
- 26:32Speaker 4: as an L. It'd be huge if they win that one.
- 26:34Speaker 2: Yeah, that would be. Boise State, number 14. Of course,
- 26:39Speaker 2: they've gotten close a couple of times. Kentucky, number 15.
- 26:43Speaker 2: We'll see how Will Stein does there. Vanderbilt, 16. And again,
- 26:45Speaker 2: these are teams that have never won a national title.
- 26:48Speaker 2: His rating on it is best. Arkansas. Now, Arkansas actually
- 26:52Speaker 2: does have a national title. And he says, Arkansas was
- 26:55Speaker 2: once a genuine powerhouse. The Razorbacks enjoyed 12 top 10
- 26:59Speaker 2: finishes in the 24 seasons between 1959 and 1982. Under first,
- 27:02Speaker 2: Frank Broyles, then Lou Holtz, And they claim the 1964
- 27:09Speaker 2: title thanks to an 11-0 finish. So they finished second
- 27:12Speaker 2: in the AP poll. Here's the deal with that. And
- 27:14Speaker 2: Connolly's leaning heavily on the AP poll. And he votes
- 27:18Speaker 2: on the AP poll. So it's kind of understandable. In 1964,
- 27:24Speaker 2: the national champion was declared by the polls before the
- 27:32Speaker 2: bowl games. All except one, which I'll get to in
- 27:35Speaker 2: a moment. But the two major polls were the AP
- 27:38Speaker 2: poll and the UPI poll, which was the coaches' poll.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Both of those polls crowned Alabama as the national champion
- 27:46Speaker 2: following the 1964 regular season. Joe Namath was the quarterback,
- 27:50Speaker 2: and they had great players and all this kind of stuff.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Alabama lost to Texas... In the Orange Bowl, the first
- 27:58Speaker 2: night-time bowl game ever, national televised on NBC, and it
- 28:02Speaker 2: was a huge game. Tommy Nobis, the long-worn All-American, stops,
- 28:06Speaker 2: name it, at the goal line. To this day, some
- 28:09Speaker 2: Alabama fans think he got in. Texas fans say, no,
- 28:11Speaker 2: he didn't. The officials said he did not. And Texas
- 28:14Speaker 2: held on. They won 21-17. Texas only lost one game
- 28:18Speaker 2: that year. It was to Arkansas. It was a Saturday
- 28:21Speaker 2: night at DKR. And they lost by the margin of
- 28:24Speaker 2: a missed extra point, 14-13. Arkansas won the game on
- 28:27Speaker 2: an 81-yard pump return from Ken Hatfield, later a Razorbacks
- 28:32Speaker 2: coach and Rice head coach as well. But Arkansas won
- 28:35Speaker 2: that game. They went on, finished the regular season undefeated,
- 28:38Speaker 2: and as the Southwest Conference champions, went to the Cotton
- 28:40Speaker 2: Bowl where they played Nebraska, and they beat Nebraska 10-7.
- 28:44Speaker 2: So they finished 11-0. And the Football Writers Association of
- 28:50Speaker 2: America said, crown them national champions. Now, you would say, well,
- 28:55Speaker 2: wouldn't those be the guys that voted on the AP poll? Some,
- 28:58Speaker 2: not all, but the Football Writers Association voted awarded Arkansas
- 29:02Speaker 2: the national championship, and they claim it. They are a
- 29:06Speaker 2: dog with a bone with that deal. They claim it.
- 29:08Speaker 2: It's a big bull letters. They are the national champions.
- 29:11Speaker 2: They're the only team that went unbeaten that year, and
- 29:14Speaker 2: there's not a lot of people who argue that much
- 29:16Speaker 2: with it other than to say, okay, it wasn't an
- 29:17Speaker 2: AP or UPI, but it was a legitimate Football Writers
- 29:20Speaker 2: Association poll. That team also featured two offensive linemen, Jerry
- 29:26Speaker 2: Jones and Jimmy Johnson. They were on that team, and
- 29:29Speaker 2: they're very, very proud of that national title. So Arkansas
- 29:33Speaker 2: does have to its credit that it's not an AP
- 29:35Speaker 2: national title, but it is looked at as being a
- 29:37Speaker 2: national championship.
- 29:39Speaker 3: You want to know something I've really learned since coming
- 29:41Speaker 3: on to produce this show a year ago?
- 29:43Speaker 2: What's that?
- 29:43Speaker 3: That college football today is crazy and different and disruptive
- 29:46Speaker 3: as the era it is now.
- 29:48Speaker 4: It's always been. It's always been a crazy circus.
- 29:52Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 29:52Speaker 2: And for years and years, and this was before you
- 29:54Speaker 2: were born and everything, we just kind of shrugged our
- 29:56Speaker 2: shoulders and took it to mean... that when the polls
- 30:00Speaker 2: were split, that there were co-national champions. Georgia Tech and
- 30:04Speaker 2: Colorado in 1990. Nebraska and Michigan in 1997. Texas has
- 30:11Speaker 2: a split national championship. It's counted as a national title.
- 30:13Speaker 2: It was the coaches' poll when they finished off the
- 30:17Speaker 2: 30-game win streak in 1970 coming off the unbeaten 69
- 30:21Speaker 2: season when they were the unanimous national champions. They beat
- 30:24Speaker 2: Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl, won the great shootout
- 30:25Speaker 2: game with Arkansas, all that other kind of stuff. and
- 30:29Speaker 2: beat Joe Theismann in Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl, 21-17.
- 30:31Speaker 2: They went that year, winning the national title. And then
- 30:37Speaker 2: the next year, they had a 10-game regular season schedule,
- 30:40Speaker 2: won all 10 games. They destroyed Arkansas in a rematch
- 30:44Speaker 2: at the end of the regular season of the shootout
- 30:45Speaker 2: the year before in Fayetteville. They won 42-7 in Austin.
- 30:49Speaker 2: So they were crowned national champions by the coaches bowl
- 30:54Speaker 2: the upi they were given this day this big trophy
- 30:56Speaker 2: called the macarthur bowl that they would give for the
- 30:58Speaker 2: national champions so they claim it and it is a
- 31:01Speaker 2: part of a split national champion but a banged up
- 31:03Speaker 2: texas uh was hobbled and had several of its players
- 31:07Speaker 2: limited and some unavailable lost to notre dame in the
- 31:09Speaker 2: cotton bowl 24 to 11 joe theismann going out of
- 31:13Speaker 2: winter and all that so because of that and because
- 31:17Speaker 2: stanford with jim plunkett at quarterback upset ohio state Because
- 31:23Speaker 2: that happened. Nebraska's win over LSU in the Orange Bowl
- 31:28Speaker 2: that night gave Nebraska the AP National Championship. So we
- 31:32Speaker 2: lived in an era of the split national champions. And
- 31:34Speaker 2: we all just kind of went, okay, yeah, they're a
- 31:36Speaker 2: national title. They're a national title. It's kind of like
- 31:39Speaker 2: being on Oprah. You get a national championship and you
- 31:41Speaker 2: get a national championship. And the thing that used to
- 31:45Speaker 2: get me all the time was, why can't we have
- 31:50Speaker 2: a playoff? And I was one of the ones. the
- 31:53Speaker 2: voices in the wilderness. And so then it went on
- 31:57Speaker 2: from there to the college football playoff. You had the
- 32:01Speaker 2: bowl alliance, the bowl coalition, the BCS, and it's just
- 32:06Speaker 2: evolved over time to where we have a playoff and
- 32:08Speaker 2: who knows the playoff system is probably going to get bigger,
- 32:10Speaker 2: but there was a time when it was just.
- 32:12Speaker 5: At the end.
- 32:12Speaker 2: And this goes back to the old educationalist thing. They
- 32:16Speaker 2: played college football for the season. Yeah, go ahead and
- 32:18Speaker 2: recognize it. But bowl games were a reward. It was not,
- 32:22Speaker 2: to be factored in. For years, the NCAA did not
- 32:25Speaker 2: count the stats from your bowl game in your stats overall.
- 32:29Speaker 2: That changed finally in the 2000s, so Ricky Williams' numbers
- 32:32Speaker 2: were retroactively added in there, but that's what happened with
- 32:36Speaker 2: all of that. The last three teams on the list,
- 32:39Speaker 2: Oklahoma State at number 18 because of Eric Morris coming
- 32:43Speaker 2: up from North Texas and bringing all of his offensive
- 32:47Speaker 2: firepower with him, Virginia Tech at number 19, and James Madison,
- 32:51Speaker 2: number 20.
- 32:52Speaker 1: Harrisonburg.
- 32:53Speaker 4: They got a Buc-ee's.
- 32:53Speaker 2: Yes, they do. They don't have Kurt Cignetti anymore, but
- 32:57Speaker 2: they do have a good football program.
- 32:58Speaker 1: All right.
- 32:59Speaker 2: Up next, inconceivable for a Friday on Sports Radio AM
- 33:02Speaker 2: 13 under the zone and the IR radio app. Second
- 33:13Speaker 2: hour of the program here on Sports Radio AM, 13
- 33:15Speaker 2: under the zone, here on a Friday. A fire-me-up Friday.
- 33:19Speaker 2: Craig Wade joined by the producer, Jay Kerman. In a
- 33:22Speaker 2: few minutes, Roger Wallace, sports director, KXAN, my broadcast partner
- 33:25Speaker 2: on Longhorn Football Games, will join us. And Roger will
- 33:30Speaker 2: also ask him about the high school game he called
- 33:33Speaker 2: last night, or at least the half game he called,
- 33:36Speaker 2: and the game that's on tap for tonight and what
- 33:39Speaker 2: KXAN Plus is doing, giving opportunity to see KXAN. Multiple
- 33:43Speaker 2: games via the streaming platform. The Cowboys play their final
- 33:48Speaker 2: preseason game of 2026. Tonight, their only home preseason game
- 33:55Speaker 2: at Jerry World. They're in Arlington. The Cowboys will play
- 33:58Speaker 2: the New Orleans Saints. Brian Schottenheimer asked yesterday about things,
- 34:02Speaker 2: starting off with an injury update.
- 34:06Speaker 9: Yeah, so really three guys will miss practice today. Bull's
- 34:09Speaker 9: doing much better. He's moving around, but he'll miss practice.
- 34:12Speaker 9: DJ Rogers will miss practice. And then Johnny is going
- 34:16Speaker 9: to miss practice. Trigg will work back in, get a
- 34:19Speaker 9: little bit of work. And there's one other that's coming back.
- 34:22Speaker 9: But who? Jay Wood's still in the protocol.
- 34:25Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 34:25Speaker 9: Yeah, he's doing individual stuff, but he's still in the protocol.
- 34:28Speaker 9: And he'll probably take that up to game time.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Headed down this home stretch now of the preseason, this
- 34:35Speaker 2: being the final thing, and then you have the big
- 34:36Speaker 2: roster cut down to 53. Shadi was asked, how many
- 34:39Speaker 2: roster spots are generally available at this point?
- 34:42Speaker 9: I think it's different. I mean, I really do. I'm
- 34:44Speaker 9: not trying to dodge the question. I think it's different.
- 34:46Speaker 9: I would say this year, some of these battles are
- 34:49Speaker 9: really contested, you know, I mean. last year, maybe it
- 34:53Speaker 9: was a little easier process, not easier in terms of
- 34:55Speaker 9: the emotion and things like that. But I do think that,
- 34:58Speaker 9: you know, it was a little bit more clear cut
- 34:59Speaker 9: now because we're a deeper, better, more talented football team.
- 35:03Speaker 9: I think, you know, these decisions are going to be
- 35:05Speaker 9: harder and, um, you know, it's part of it, but,
- 35:10Speaker 9: you know, each situation is different. And so, you know,
- 35:14Speaker 9: is it 12? Is it 18? Is it 15? You
- 35:19Speaker 9: really don't know. And so, um, Have a great practice tonight.
- 35:23Speaker 9: Excited about tonight's work and get through the game and
- 35:26Speaker 9: we'll put together a hell of a roster. I have
- 35:28Speaker 9: no question about that.
- 35:30Speaker 2: He has been really pleased, Schottenheimer has, with some promising
- 35:34Speaker 2: depth that has shown up throughout the preseason. I think so.
- 35:38Speaker 9: Yeah, I really think that's a big part of it.
- 35:41Speaker 9: We see it in practice every day, but I think
- 35:43Speaker 9: you see it in us in the fourth quarter of
- 35:45Speaker 9: some of these games in Seattle and being able to
- 35:47Speaker 9: put the game away. In Arizona, we jumped on them
- 35:52Speaker 9: early but still be able to finish the game the
- 35:54Speaker 9: way we did. I think you're seeing, like I said,
- 35:57Speaker 9: we sat 29 guys last game, and we're still able
- 36:00Speaker 9: to function and play really well with a great play
- 36:02Speaker 9: style that jumps off the tape, and that's because of
- 36:06Speaker 9: the depth that we have on this football team.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Yesterday on the program, we had Isaiah Stanback on with us,
- 36:14Speaker 2: and I asked him who was surprised the most or
- 36:16Speaker 2: impressed him. He said LT Overton. And you know what?
- 36:19Speaker 2: Shotty agrees.
- 36:21Speaker 9: Great sack. The other night, it was an effort sack
- 36:24Speaker 9: set up by T. Wheat, who did a great job
- 36:26Speaker 9: with his rush of not going past the quarterback. I
- 36:30Speaker 9: would say LT is one of the most natural pass
- 36:32Speaker 9: rushers I've been around for an interior guy. We saw
- 36:36Speaker 9: that at Alabama. Um, you know, he's still learning some
- 36:40Speaker 9: of the techniques that we believe in terms of playing,
- 36:43Speaker 9: you know, combination blocks and run defense and things like that. But, um, he's,
- 36:48Speaker 9: you know, been elite in a lot of ways, rushing
- 36:51Speaker 9: the passer. And, um, you know, he's a guy we're very,
- 36:54Speaker 9: very high on. And, um, we were high on in
- 36:57Speaker 9: the fourth round when we took him and, uh, he's, uh,
- 36:59Speaker 9: having a great camp and, um, you know, we'll, we'll
- 37:02Speaker 9: see what we decided to do with him on, on
- 37:03Speaker 9: game day.
- 37:04Speaker 2: And a couple of comments about Jonathan Mingo, the receiver
- 37:08Speaker 2: called a touchdown pass. That battle for that fifth wide
- 37:10Speaker 2: receiver spot may be settled after tonight. First of all,
- 37:15Speaker 2: talking about the mental preparation and what the mentality was
- 37:19Speaker 2: for Mingo during camp.
- 37:21Speaker 9: Could not be more proud of Jonathan. You know, he,
- 37:24Speaker 9: you know, everybody, they figured out at different stages of
- 37:27Speaker 9: their career for different reasons, you know, being selected high
- 37:30Speaker 9: like he was in Carolina and then being traded. That's
- 37:32Speaker 9: not easy. I mean, that, you know, Believe me, you're
- 37:34Speaker 9: talking to guys who have been fired a lot. And
- 37:36Speaker 9: so you kind of like you start second-guessing yourself and whatnot.
- 37:39Speaker 9: But he's figured it out. And, you know, he's not
- 37:44Speaker 9: just done it on offense. He's done it in another phase,
- 37:47Speaker 9: which is really important to us, and that's special teams,
- 37:49Speaker 9: whether it's a gunner, whether it's a returner. He's figured
- 37:53Speaker 9: out what creates value on a football team, and that's versatility.
- 37:57Speaker 9: And I could not be more proud of him and
- 37:59Speaker 9: just kind of what he's done. And really, really pleased.
- 38:05Speaker 2: And was there a moment that Schottenheimer saw things really
- 38:09Speaker 2: click for Jonathan Mingo?
- 38:12Speaker 1: No.
- 38:13Speaker 9: You know, I just think that, you know, like I said,
- 38:14Speaker 9: I think, you know, I can't speak for him. But
- 38:17Speaker 9: I do know that, you know, sometimes when you're, you know,
- 38:20Speaker 9: sent to a different team, there's guys that they attack
- 38:23Speaker 9: it one way and there's guys that attack it a
- 38:25Speaker 9: different way. And for whatever reason, I think he just said, hey,
- 38:29Speaker 9: it's time for me to go do this. He's incredibly talented.
- 38:32Speaker 9: He's incredibly gifted. but it's been really fun for us
- 38:36Speaker 9: to see him put it all together, and it's not
- 38:37Speaker 9: been one or two plays. It's been every day, and
- 38:40Speaker 9: so that's what I think we're so excited about for him,
- 38:42Speaker 9: and it's cool for him to get his first touchdown
- 38:45Speaker 9: the other night.
- 38:47Speaker 2: So the Cowboys will conclude the preseason against the New
- 38:50Speaker 2: Orleans Saints, and that's tonight, and then all of their
- 38:54Speaker 2: games in the regular season and postseason can be heard
- 38:56Speaker 2: on our sister station, 98.1 FM KVETS. That will begin tonight.
- 39:01Speaker 2: a week from Sunday. They have that Sunday night season
- 39:04Speaker 2: opener against the New York Giants. We'll shift to college
- 39:07Speaker 2: football and high school football. Coming up, we'll visit with
- 39:09Speaker 2: Roger Wallace, sports director at KXAN and my broadcast partner
- 39:13Speaker 2: at Longhorn Games when we continue on Sports Radio AM13
- 39:16Speaker 2: Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app. There are certain
- 39:27Speaker 2: immovables elements of this program. For example, that we bring
- 39:35Speaker 2: you Inconceivable during the afternoons. We bring you Longhorn coverage
- 39:40Speaker 2: like nobody else. The other immovable element thing is that
- 39:45Speaker 2: whenever Roger Wallace joins the program, the producer, Jake Herman,
- 39:48Speaker 2: is sure to bring us back from the break with
- 39:52Speaker 2: a Jimmy Buffett offering. This one might, I stress on
- 39:56Speaker 2: the word might, might be Roger's favorite if backed into
- 40:00Speaker 2: a corner. Is that right, one particular harbor? Is that correct?
- 40:03Speaker 10: I would think so. I appreciate it.
- 40:05Speaker 8: That always gives me a great feeling when I come
- 40:07Speaker 8: on and hear a little Buffett. But yeah, that's That song,
- 40:11Speaker 8: if you had to say one song, that would definitely
- 40:14Speaker 8: be near the top.
- 40:15Speaker 10: But I appreciate that, Jay.
- 40:17Speaker 2: Yeah, what is it that you enjoy about that particular one?
- 40:22Speaker 8: I think it's the fact that it's got a little
- 40:24Speaker 8: bit of everything. It's got the storytelling, but it also
- 40:28Speaker 8: has just a great musical aspect of it. Not that
- 40:34Speaker 8: I speak Portuguese, but you show his versatility there, starting
- 40:39Speaker 8: off in Portuguese.
- 40:42Speaker 10: It's kind of Buffett.
- 40:43Speaker 8: You think of Buffett, you think of the water, you
- 40:45Speaker 8: think of boats. Everybody's Got that one particular harbor in
- 40:50Speaker 8: their mind. It might not actually be a harbor, but
- 40:52Speaker 8: I think you know what that means. Everybody's got that
- 40:54Speaker 8: place in their mind, their special place. And so I
- 40:57Speaker 8: think it just kind of brings it all together. You
- 40:59Speaker 8: and I had a fun text thread about some Buffett
- 41:01Speaker 8: music a couple of weeks ago, and I think this was.
- 41:04Speaker 10: One of the... for that thread.
- 41:07Speaker 2: And Linda was preparing dinner that night and it was
- 41:09Speaker 2: going to take a little longer than normal. And so
- 41:12Speaker 2: we just went, I think we went to Apple Music
- 41:13Speaker 2: and started pulling this up and then you turned me
- 41:16Speaker 2: on to that one and then you turned me on
- 41:17Speaker 2: to another and then you had a story with each one.
- 41:19Speaker 2: You know, people say, I have stories with stuff and
- 41:21Speaker 2: I do, but you had stories about songs. So that
- 41:24Speaker 2: was fun. And we ended up listening to a lot
- 41:26Speaker 2: of Jimmy Buffett that night, a lot of his offerings
- 41:29Speaker 2: that we never heard before or only vaguely had heard
- 41:33Speaker 2: And so it was a lot of good. It was
- 41:36Speaker 2: a lot of fun.
- 41:37Speaker 8: One of my favorite ones, Craig, is that he's sitting
- 41:40Speaker 8: in a bar in Key West, and he hears guys
- 41:43Speaker 8: talking at the bar saying that Jimmy Buffett's in town.
- 41:48Speaker 8: And so that was the inspiration for I Heard I
- 41:52Speaker 8: Was in Town.
- 41:54Speaker 2: Love that. And what was the song, and I liked it,
- 41:57Speaker 2: I've just forgotten the title, the one where Walter Cronkite's
- 41:59Speaker 2: mentioned in the song.
- 42:01Speaker 10: Yeah, that's Learn to Be Cool From You.
- 42:03Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 42:05Speaker 8: And he's got a couple of Walter Cronkite references. He
- 42:08Speaker 8: had some interesting kind of friends along the way. Ed
- 42:11Speaker 8: Bradley from 60 Minutes and he were good friends and just.
- 42:16Speaker 10: He kind of.
- 42:17Speaker 8: Span the spectrum and like to say that he could
- 42:21Speaker 8: bring everybody together.
- 42:22Speaker 10: And in this day and age, I think that's pretty rare.
- 42:25Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, we could use a little bit of that.
- 42:28Speaker 2: You could have used a better weather situation last night
- 42:33Speaker 2: at the Palace Home Farmer. And I want you to
- 42:35Speaker 2: tell folks a little bit about this. Roger and Keith
- 42:37Speaker 2: were calling on KBVO the season opener between Eastview and
- 42:42Speaker 2: Cedar Ridge. And everybody's all excited about it. And you
- 42:46Speaker 2: texted me before the game to say we're going to
- 42:48Speaker 2: be pushed back a little bit. It ended up kicking
- 42:51Speaker 2: off right around 720 or so when it was supposed
- 42:52Speaker 2: to kick at seven. And I was like, is it
- 42:54Speaker 2: raining down there? And then, you know, between Nick Mann
- 42:57Speaker 2: and your chief meteorologist there at KXAN and what was
- 43:01Speaker 2: a bizarre evening, my question, and you wound up only
- 43:04Speaker 2: getting half the game in, did it ever rain at
- 43:09Speaker 2: all there at the stadium?
- 43:11Speaker 8: We had a few drops early, late afternoon, but the
- 43:16Speaker 8: rain wasn't anything we thought. We thought, okay, that's kind
- 43:18Speaker 8: of nice. Maybe that'll cool things down. But even that
- 43:21Speaker 8: was really short. I think it was maybe 530 or
- 43:24Speaker 8: so when it started to rain. But yeah, and I
- 43:27Speaker 8: joke that how long have we gone? Seems like we
- 43:30Speaker 8: haven't seen a cloud. And then on the first night
- 43:32Speaker 8: of high school football, these weird pop-up electric episodes happen because, yeah,
- 43:38Speaker 8: there wasn't the great rain to accompany it and, you know,
- 43:41Speaker 8: at least get something good out of it.
- 43:44Speaker 2: Exactly. And then you only get half a game out
- 43:47Speaker 2: of it, right?
- 43:48Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 43:49Speaker 8: And, you know, it was a pretty good game. It
- 43:50Speaker 8: was three scores in the first three possessions. And then,
- 43:53Speaker 8: you know, Cedar Ridge kind of established themselves.
- 43:56Speaker 10: And they waited a while.
- 43:57Speaker 8: It happened right after Eastview performed their halftime or at
- 44:01Speaker 8: least part of it. And then they cleared the stadium
- 44:03Speaker 8: and waited and waited.
- 44:04Speaker 10: And then finally the.
- 44:05Speaker 8: The coaches and Howard McMahon, the assistant AD for Round
- 44:08Speaker 8: Rock ISD, got together, and it was a good choice
- 44:12Speaker 8: because as I was texting with you on my way home,
- 44:14Speaker 8: the lightning show continued late into the evening, so we
- 44:18Speaker 8: would have been up against them. The fact that it
- 44:20Speaker 8: was Thursday, and it's a school night, I'm thinking non-district games, so.
- 44:26Speaker 2: What do you think?
- 44:26Speaker 10: Cedar Ridge is 1-0 and ECU is 0-0?
- 44:30Speaker 2: It's really weird. I've been asked about this many times
- 44:33Speaker 2: in the past, and I've heard different perspectives on this.
- 44:36Speaker 2: And I think it almost always, or at least in
- 44:40Speaker 2: large measure, boils down to whether you were ahead at halftime.
- 44:44Speaker 2: or trailing at halftime. Jake brought up a good point
- 44:47Speaker 2: about Liberty Hill's game last night. Jake, that Liberty Hill
- 44:49Speaker 2: was down at the half and actually scored to go
- 44:51Speaker 2: up in the third quarter before the weather stopped it?
- 44:55Speaker 3: Yeah, they were down 30-20 at one point. I think
- 44:58Speaker 3: they scored once right before the half, and then once
- 45:00Speaker 3: at the beginning of the third quarter, they went into
- 45:02Speaker 3: a lightning delay in the third, and they didn't resume.
- 45:05Speaker 2: Yeah, it almost reminds me, Roger, of like a Major
- 45:08Speaker 2: League Baseball game. If you got a couple of runs
- 45:10Speaker 2: in the top of the fifth, And then the other
- 45:12Speaker 2: team scored one run, but they were still down. And
- 45:14Speaker 2: then the fifth ended and the skies opened up and
- 45:16Speaker 2: you couldn't resume. And they called and said, ball game
- 45:19Speaker 2: after that. But what I've found is, it depends on
- 45:22Speaker 2: the coach you ask for. Quite often, the coaches of
- 45:26Speaker 2: the winning teams will say, if they were up at
- 45:29Speaker 2: the half, especially if they're up by two scores, as
- 45:32Speaker 2: Cedar Ridge was, to say, well, we won. We're counting
- 45:35Speaker 2: it as a victory. Whereas the coach of the trailing
- 45:38Speaker 2: team might say we didn't play the game to its completion,
- 45:43Speaker 2: so therefore we're counting it as a no contest. And
- 45:46Speaker 2: there's no– I remember this coming out in the past.
- 45:49Speaker 2: There's no real rule about it from the UIL, especially
- 45:55Speaker 2: as it relates to non-district games. I mean, does it
- 45:57Speaker 2: really matter that much?
- 45:59Speaker 1: Right.
- 45:59Speaker 8: Now, I don't know if Brian Vardaman or Bill Robertson
- 46:03Speaker 8: are going to coach for 25 more years and suddenly
- 46:06Speaker 8: that win total might– might put them in some rarefied
- 46:10Speaker 8: air and then you start looking back at the, but yeah,
- 46:12Speaker 8: I think, I think they, they got some work in.
- 46:14Speaker 2: It was unfortunate.
- 46:16Speaker 8: He was going to get the ball to start the
- 46:18Speaker 8: second half. So, you know, they can go down and
- 46:20Speaker 8: get a score. Then it's one score game, but just
- 46:23Speaker 8: kind of unfortunate how it, how it worked out for
- 46:25Speaker 8: both teams. And hopefully we'll get a, We'll get a
- 46:28Speaker 8: full game in tonight at the field.
- 46:29Speaker 2: Which brings us to this telecast that you're going to
- 46:32Speaker 2: have of two old rivals, Leander and Pflugerville. And even
- 46:36Speaker 2: though they've kind of gone their separate ways in terms
- 46:39Speaker 2: of classification. And there was a time when Pflugerville was
- 46:42Speaker 2: a 6A and Leander was a 5A. Now it's the
- 46:43Speaker 2: other way around. That sort of thing. And coaches are
- 46:49Speaker 2: looking for different things, I guess, in non-district play. And
- 46:51Speaker 2: that's what non-district is all about because it doesn't It
- 46:53Speaker 2: doesn't prevent you from qualifying for the playoffs or having
- 46:56Speaker 2: a shot to win a state championship. But what's the
- 47:00Speaker 2: feedback you've gotten from the coaches on what they're looking
- 47:02Speaker 2: for out of this game at the field tonight?
- 47:04Speaker 8: Yeah, well, let's start with Leander. He got a first
- 47:07Speaker 8: year head coach in Ahmad Zayden. So, you know, he's
- 47:10Speaker 8: familiar with Leander ISD, coached with Chris Ross and Joe
- 47:15Speaker 8: Willis at Cedar Park and was part of a state championship.
- 47:18Speaker 8: But clearly they're trying to kind of get that thing
- 47:20Speaker 8: turned back around from the last several years where.
- 47:24Speaker 10: They have not had any luck getting into the postseason.
- 47:27Speaker 8: So, you know, first year coach, they got a new
- 47:30Speaker 8: quarterback or a first year starting quarterback. So I'm sure
- 47:33Speaker 8: he's just anxious to get them out there and see
- 47:35Speaker 8: what they've got. Pflugerville, you got the veteran and Charles
- 47:38Speaker 8: Taylor in his ninth year. They got two rounds in
- 47:41Speaker 8: the playoffs, but of course he's replacing his son, a
- 47:44Speaker 8: quarterback who who accounted for 48 touchdowns. But it's interesting, Craig,
- 47:48Speaker 8: I think back, was it the 07? Was that the
- 47:52Speaker 8: memorable Andrew Pflugerville Thursday night statewide telecast you did?
- 47:56Speaker 2: Sure was. 38, 37?
- 47:58Speaker 10: Get in at quarterback.
- 48:01Speaker 2: Quarterback. Defensive back, he snapped the ball on, he was
- 48:07Speaker 2: the deep snapper on conversions. He scored a two-point conversion
- 48:11Speaker 2: in the game. And the thing is, we did that
- 48:13Speaker 2: game on Fox Southwest, and I had to talk because
- 48:15Speaker 2: it was during NBA lockout. And I had to talk
- 48:19Speaker 2: John Heike, the general manager, into doing that game. They
- 48:21Speaker 2: wanted to pick another game from the Metroplex or this,
- 48:26Speaker 2: and I said, I guarantee you this is going to
- 48:27Speaker 2: be a great game. He said, okay, we'll go with it.
- 48:30Speaker 2: And he still thanks me to this day because that
- 48:33Speaker 2: game was unbelievable.
- 48:34Speaker 8: I don't remember much from that long ago, but I
- 48:38Speaker 8: remember that game. That was before we started doing the
- 48:41Speaker 8: Thursday night package. So I was at work, and I'm
- 48:45Speaker 8: sure it wasn't over in time to get highlights. I'm
- 48:47Speaker 8: sure it went about three and a half hours with.
- 48:50Speaker 5: All the scoring.
- 48:52Speaker 10: But that game jumps out.
- 48:53Speaker 8: But it's interesting because these are kind of the flagships
- 48:56Speaker 8: of their district, and they both– certainly felt the squeeze
- 49:00Speaker 8: from all the growth and all the added high schools.
- 49:04Speaker 8: Charles Taylor said, we are a 5A Division II school.
- 49:09Speaker 8: Their numbers are low. It's a far cry from back
- 49:14Speaker 8: in the day with George Herman and Steve Gideon running
- 49:17Speaker 8: those teams as far as just the kind of the
- 49:20Speaker 8: way the city in this.
- 49:22Speaker 9: Area has grown.
- 49:23Speaker 2: No doubt about it. Roger Wallace with us here on
- 49:25Speaker 2: 13 Under the Zone. I wanted to give you an
- 49:27Speaker 2: opportunity to tell people about the blossoming flower that KXAM
- 49:34Speaker 2: Plus has become when it comes to high school football
- 49:37Speaker 2: because it's far more than just that game, which folks
- 49:39Speaker 2: can watch for free tonight on KXAM Plus. And this follows,
- 49:44Speaker 2: of course, the UIL edict that Thursday night games can
- 49:47Speaker 2: be over the air on television live, but Friday games
- 49:50Speaker 2: all have to be through streaming platforms. And the nice
- 49:54Speaker 2: thing is that you can watch it on your television
- 49:56Speaker 2: while streaming on KXM Plus. And more is the point,
- 49:59Speaker 2: as you're about to detail, is more than just that
- 50:01Speaker 2: game you guys got up on KXM Plus tonight.
- 50:05Speaker 8: And we hope this is just the start, Craig.
- 50:06Speaker 10: We're trying to kind of figure this all out.
- 50:10Speaker 8: But yeah, we're adding this game that we'll produce along
- 50:13Speaker 8: with Westlake and the Chap Nation and their production. And
- 50:18Speaker 8: that game will be on KXM.
- 50:20Speaker 10: Plus as well. So You're going to be able to
- 50:22Speaker 10: go to the app.
- 50:22Speaker 8: You have to download the app on your smart TV and,
- 50:25Speaker 8: and you got two games to choose from Westlake. Interesting
- 50:28Speaker 8: matchup with the team from Englewood, California and Southern California
- 50:32Speaker 8: coming in. And then, then our game with Pflugerville Leander. And,
- 50:37Speaker 8: you know, again, this is all, it's.
- 50:39Speaker 10: The wild, wild world of the, of the digital age now.
- 50:43Speaker 8: So we're working hard to see if this thing can
- 50:45Speaker 8: grow even more, and hopefully there'll be a time where
- 50:48Speaker 8: you can go to the app, and it's almost like
- 50:51Speaker 8: ESPN Plus. You've got a menu of games that you
- 50:54Speaker 8: can watch, but we are going to offer two tonight,
- 50:56Speaker 8: and they're going to look like TV games, but we're
- 51:00Speaker 8: playing by the rules.
- 51:01Speaker 10: It's a stream game.
- 51:02Speaker 2: Yeah, well, and then on top of that, aren't you
- 51:04Speaker 2: still in the evolutionary process by getting some streams of certain...
- 51:11Speaker 2: athletic programs or stadiums that you're going to actually be
- 51:15Speaker 2: able to put up on the platform. It won't be
- 51:16Speaker 2: your true TV telecast, but folks will be able to
- 51:19Speaker 2: kind of watch the game and follow what's going on, right?
- 51:22Speaker 8: Yeah, the best I can say is there are, you know,
- 51:25Speaker 8: discussions are going on. And so there's a lot of
- 51:28Speaker 8: technical stuff that I don't claim.
- 51:31Speaker 10: To know about. But, yeah, to pull that off.
- 51:34Speaker 8: But, yes, the bottom line is we're trying to grow this.
- 51:37Speaker 8: And we think that this can be something that can be,
- 51:40Speaker 8: you know, beneficial to us to allow people to have access.
- 51:43Speaker 8: options and so they come to our our kxam plus
- 51:46Speaker 8: and obviously we think it can be beneficial to.
- 51:48Speaker 10: To high school fans because you know i get i.
- 51:50Speaker 8: Get it every week what do you have tonight and
- 51:52Speaker 8: they don't care necessarily about the matchup as fat as
- 51:56Speaker 8: much as there's a game on to watch live high
- 51:58Speaker 8: school football well you know now we're hoping to expand
- 52:01Speaker 8: that to to fridays and i get it it's not
- 52:04Speaker 8: turning on your tv and simply going to a channel
- 52:06Speaker 8: a little more work's involved but uh You know, Craig,
- 52:09Speaker 8: we're trying to keep up. I'm an old guy trying
- 52:11Speaker 8: to keep up with the times here. They're dragging me along.
- 52:14Speaker 4: Okay.
- 52:15Speaker 2: All right. So let me, let me, uh, let me
- 52:17Speaker 2: tap into your, uh, like, like mine curmudgeon mind on
- 52:20Speaker 2: this thing. As I shift to college football, uh, this
- 52:24Speaker 2: thing has just accelerated by leaps and bounds. All of
- 52:28Speaker 2: the legalese that surrounding, uh, the, the, the players trying
- 52:32Speaker 2: to go back from the NFL, uh, at least from
- 52:34Speaker 2: training camps into college, there was a, Last night, an
- 52:37Speaker 2: injunction issued by a judge in Dallas. We knew that
- 52:40Speaker 2: was going to happen. There was going to be more
- 52:41Speaker 2: and more court battles on this. I like what Sark
- 52:45Speaker 2: had to say at his availability the other day. He
- 52:47Speaker 2: said it seems like he's changing every 15 minutes. So
- 52:49Speaker 2: they have to kind of stand back and take a
- 52:52Speaker 2: deep breath on this. How about your thoughts on the
- 52:55Speaker 2: phenomenon now that has been created due in part to
- 52:59Speaker 2: Lane Kiffin wanting to have guys back on the roster?
- 53:03Speaker 8: Yeah, it's hard to keep up, but it's kind of double-edged.
- 53:07Speaker 8: You go, okay, this seems absurd that you can be
- 53:10Speaker 8: in an NFL camp and be back on a roster.
- 53:13Speaker 8: And then you go, okay, you've got to be flexible
- 53:16Speaker 8: enough to say if these are the rules, As Sark
- 53:19Speaker 8: has always said, I'm never going to sit back and
- 53:21Speaker 8: complain about the rules. I'm going to try to figure
- 53:23Speaker 8: out how to adapt to the rules. So which side
- 53:26Speaker 8: are you on? It seems far-fetched. And yet if those
- 53:30Speaker 8: are the rules, you better try to keep up. And
- 53:32Speaker 8: then the latest I saw, maybe you guys have talked
- 53:34Speaker 8: about it as well, now is the CFP going to
- 53:37Speaker 8: get involved and say, okay, you're eligible for your team
- 53:41Speaker 8: and the judge's ruling allows you to play, but we
- 53:45Speaker 8: can not have you in our tournament. So, you know, that's,
- 53:50Speaker 8: that's a group of humans that picks it. And so
- 53:53Speaker 8: they can deem them. They at least talked about, do
- 53:56Speaker 8: they deem anybody ineligible that's played, you know, professionally signed
- 54:00Speaker 8: or been on a roster.
- 54:01Speaker 10: So I can't wait for the games.
- 54:04Speaker 8: I don't think anything's going to go away because of
- 54:06Speaker 8: the games, Craig, but it is, it's hard, hard to
- 54:09Speaker 8: keep up. I mean, the latest I saw what Kendall
- 54:13Speaker 8: Weaver is now ineligible at Houston, Jordan Pope, Does the
- 54:16Speaker 8: judge's ruling affect that so they're eligible again? Anybody that
- 54:21Speaker 8: thinks they know everything is not telling the truth because
- 54:24Speaker 8: it's going too fast and furious.
- 54:26Speaker 2: Yeah, and as you point out, if the CFP says,
- 54:30Speaker 2: we'll go ahead and continue to use LSU as the
- 54:34Speaker 2: example on this, say LSU is good enough to be
- 54:37Speaker 2: in the college football playoff and the CFP people say, no,
- 54:40Speaker 2: you played with those guys under an injunction. This is
- 54:43Speaker 2: what I meant when I said earlier in the program
- 54:45Speaker 2: that about what the consequences could be, and they could
- 54:49Speaker 2: say you're not eligible, then what's to stop, and I'm
- 54:52Speaker 2: sure it won't stop, LSU from lawyering up and then
- 54:55Speaker 2: trying to get the injunction to play in the playoffs, right?
- 54:59Speaker 8: Unless they don't have an automatic bid, and then it
- 55:02Speaker 8: doesn't matter because they don't, you know.
- 55:05Speaker 2: That's true.
- 55:06Speaker 10: It's an invitational after that.
- 55:07Speaker 2: That's true.
- 55:08Speaker 8: Yeah, clearly if they didn't win the SEC, but they're
- 55:12Speaker 8: ranked in the top 10 and they were kept out,
- 55:14Speaker 8: It's pretty clear what's going on. But at some point, and,
- 55:18Speaker 8: you know, it's always the grownups in the room.
- 55:20Speaker 10: You know, I don't blame any of the kids.
- 55:22Speaker 8: They're trying to do what, either extend their career or
- 55:26Speaker 8: if the pros aren't an option all of a sudden
- 55:29Speaker 8: and there's a way for them to get back and
- 55:32Speaker 8: play and earn more money.
- 55:33Speaker 5: Of course, that's obvious.
- 55:35Speaker 8: Another thing behind it is they can go back and
- 55:38Speaker 8: make money. But the grownups came to keep messing this
- 55:41Speaker 8: thing up.
- 55:43Speaker 2: No doubt about it. Roger Wallace was for a couple
- 55:45Speaker 2: more minutes. Let's jump to Texas. Game week actually begins
- 55:49Speaker 2: next week. All of the press conference on Monday and
- 55:51Speaker 2: all that other kind of stuff as well. You know,
- 55:56Speaker 2: we're eight days from kickoff, but what still stands out
- 56:00Speaker 2: in your mind, not necessarily as a trouble spot or
- 56:04Speaker 2: a concern, but a curiosity you may have on on
- 56:07Speaker 2: an area or a player or a position or whatever
- 56:11Speaker 2: to step up. What still stands out in your mind
- 56:15Speaker 2: about a question or at least a curiosity in one
- 56:18Speaker 2: area of the team?
- 56:20Speaker 8: Yeah, they go a couple different ways. The curiosity is,
- 56:23Speaker 8: are these backs going to turn this offense into what
- 56:27Speaker 8: it appears it could be that they.
- 56:29Speaker 10: Didn't have last year?
- 56:30Speaker 8: And that's just that another element of explosiveness that and
- 56:35Speaker 8: the home runs that they can provide.
- 56:38Speaker 10: Can they do that?
- 56:39Speaker 8: Obviously, Arch and this receiving core, everyone wants to see them.
- 56:43Speaker 10: They want to see it lighted up.
- 56:45Speaker 8: But clearly, if you go the other way, it's, all right,
- 56:47Speaker 8: how's this linebacker core look? You lose a big piece
- 56:50Speaker 8: to Anthony Smith. It was already a room that after
- 56:54Speaker 8: Smith and Biles, who hasn't played a snap yet, uh,
- 56:57Speaker 8: for Texas, you got some veteran portal guys and you got.
- 57:00Speaker 10: Some young guys.
- 57:00Speaker 8: So to me, that's the curiosity on both sides of
- 57:03Speaker 8: the ball. What's that look like at the linebacking position?
- 57:06Speaker 8: And then does this, uh, tandem of Brown and smothers
- 57:12Speaker 8: make this offense really dynamic?
- 57:14Speaker 2: Yeah, no, no, no question about that. Uh, is Roger Wallace.
- 57:17Speaker 2: You watch, uh, Roger and key tonight, KXM plus for
- 57:22Speaker 2: Leander and Pflugerville. They also offer up the Westlake, uh, Englewood,
- 57:27Speaker 2: California non-district matchup to open the season. You got half
- 57:31Speaker 2: a game last night, so it was just enough to
- 57:32Speaker 2: whet the appetite, right, for tonight?
- 57:35Speaker 10: Yeah, we're going for the full 48.
- 57:36Speaker 8: I do want to say, you know, we were originally
- 57:38Speaker 8: supposed to be at Dripping Springs tonight, Lake Travis, Dripping Springs.
- 57:42Speaker 8: Our heart and our thoughts go out to the Lake
- 57:45Speaker 8: Travis program and the family of Odin Hensley and Hank
- 57:48Speaker 8: Carter and those guys. And so we were able to
- 57:51Speaker 8: pivot and get the game at the field. But certainly
- 57:54Speaker 8: thinking about that program and the unimaginable way that they
- 57:58Speaker 8: have to play.
- 57:59Speaker 10: You know, carry on this season. So I wanted to
- 58:02Speaker 10: make sure that I got that out there.
- 58:04Speaker 2: No doubt about it.
- 58:05Speaker 5: Thanks, Roger.
- 58:05Speaker 2: Appreciate it.
- 58:06Speaker 10: All right.
- 58:07Speaker 5: Thanks, Craig.
- 58:07Speaker 2: All right. That's Roger Wallace, sports director at KXAN, my
- 58:10Speaker 2: broadcast partner in Longhorn football, and he'll be calling that
- 58:13Speaker 2: action with Keith Moreland tonight, Leander, and Pflugerville. We have
- 58:17Speaker 2: more coming up as we continue on this Friday afternoon
- 58:20Speaker 2: on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and the
- 58:22Speaker 2: iHeartRadio app. on a fire me up friday one of
- 58:31Speaker 2: the bands that was very popular during my collegiate days
- 58:36Speaker 2: in excess i never worked an in excess concert or
- 58:40Speaker 2: saw them but always liked the music not too familiar
- 58:44Speaker 2: they had they had a couple of big time hits
- 58:48Speaker 2: um the one thing i think might have been their
- 58:50Speaker 2: biggest hit but uh but devil inside which is what
- 58:53Speaker 2: this one is is uh is good and uh yeah
- 58:58Speaker 2: that's uh something that Rolls in nicely and will fire
- 59:02Speaker 2: me up Friday. Okay. So, if you're trying to decide,
- 59:07Speaker 2: you know, what games... what football, there is football, actual
- 59:13Speaker 2: counted in the records football to watch this weekend. Now,
- 59:16Speaker 2: there's actual not counted in the records football to watch
- 59:20Speaker 2: this weekend, like the Cowboys preseason game tonight. I did
- 59:24Speaker 2: watch some of the Rams Chargers last night since it
- 59:26Speaker 2: had such a late kickoff, a 9 o'clock kickoff.
- 59:28Speaker 4: I saw the one throw. From Herbert to QJ, Quentin Johnson.
- 59:32Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. That was a very, very nice start. How
- 59:36Speaker 2: about Matthew Caldwell, the former Longhorn backup to Arch Manning,
- 59:41Speaker 2: throwing a touchdown pass for the Rams in that game?
- 59:43Speaker 4: The hero in Starkville.
- 59:45Speaker 2: I didn't even know he was on the roster. And
- 59:48Speaker 2: I'm a Rams fan. I didn't even know. Because all
- 59:50Speaker 2: of the attention, obviously, has been focused on the battle
- 59:53Speaker 2: for the number two spot between Stetson Bennett and Ty Simpson.
- 59:57Speaker 2: and I didn't even know Matthew Caldwell was on the roster,
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: but there was, you know, and Caldwell throwing a touchdown
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: pass in the game last night, so you may be wondering, okay,
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: what games should I watch if I'm watching college football,
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: in addition to high school football we talked about, well,
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: here's a list of eight FBS games of what's called
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: week zero, what they used to call that in high
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: school football in Texas, now it's just week one with
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: an open date, this is called Week zero games, and
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: this is according to The Athletic, they ranked them from
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: the least interesting to the most. Number eight, Sacramento State
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: at Eastern Michigan. It says week zero matching because featuring
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: FBS and Mid-America Conference newcomer Sac State. Yeah, they're moving
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: into FBS, Sacramento State, and of all conferences to join,
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: they're in the MAAC. And they're going to have a
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: conference game, hoofing it all the way to Ypsilanti to
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: face EMU for a very green showdown. They both have
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: green in their uniform.
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: The good old conference regional rivalry of Sac State and
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: Buffalo in November.
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: Yeah, that one's coming.
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: Number seven, New Mexico State and Florida State. It's nice
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: to have a marquee brand like the Seminoles on opening weekend,
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: but the talk all season has been about Mike Norvell
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: being on the hot seat, blah, blah, blah. So they're
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: playing New Mexico State. Number six, Jacksonville State at North
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: Dakota State. This is now a G6 game, and they say,
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: don't sleep on this because this will be 530 tomorrow.
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: North Dakota State finally making that leap to FBS, and
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: they're playing Jack State, who went to a bowl game
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: last year. They've reached the Conference USA title game two
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: years running. Number five, Hawaii at Stanford State. And that's
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: on ACC Network. By the way, these other games that
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: I meant to tell you, the first one, Sac State,
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: Eastern Michigan is ESPN +. New Mexico State, Florida State
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: is on the CW tomorrow night. Jacksonville State, North Dakota
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: State is on CBS Sports Network. Hawaii at Stanford is
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: on ACC Network. Number four is San Jose State at USC,
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: ranked 14th. That's on NBC. tomorrow afternoon. Number three, North
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: Carolina State, Virginia. This is the game that was going
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: to be in Rio, Rio de Janeiro, but it was
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: moved to Charlottesville due to operational issues overseas. Logistics aside,
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: the ACC petitioned to keep the game in week zero,
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: bringing a little extra shine as to what should be
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: a fun matchup. Virginia was going to be the home
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: team of the game, so they get to host it.
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: Number two, Memphis at UNLV. That's tomorrow night, 9 o'clock,
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: and that's on Fox. And then finally, number one, North
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: Carolina TCU, which will be at 11 o'clock tomorrow morning.
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: So there's some college football for you there to watch.
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: We'll be back to wrap up hour number two on
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: 13 Under the Zone. Third and final hour of the
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: program here on Sports Radio AM 1300 The Zone. Craig Wayne,
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: joined by the producer, Jake Herman. Glad to have you
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: with us here as we get you to the finish
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: line of a work week. Those, again, for those of
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: you for whom Friday is the end of the work week.
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: And then, like we said, there's others that are working
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: through the weekend. Starting next week, by the way, that
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: will clearly and obviously include me working through the weekend,
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: at least through the Saturdays. And then when we get
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: to basketball, it really kind of, Takes that path.
- 1:03:50Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:03:50Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: I can't wait to tell folks what's going on with
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: all of our Saturday stuff around the game, too.
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: I'll be involved with some of the Longhorns game day crew.
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: Yep. Our game day, of course, coverage will begin next week.
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: We actually have Longhorn Monday starting. Our Longhorns Monday start
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: when we bring you Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkeesian's weekly
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: news conference live as we have all the years that
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: I've been back here. And by the way, I meant
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: to say that. Today, on this Friday, is August 28th.
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: It was three years ago today that I started back
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: here at 1300 The Zone in the Ihart family. So
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: thanks to the staff and management of the Ihart family,
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: and I'm happy to be home again. So three years
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: back here, I was here for 19 years, going back
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: even before Ihart owned 1300 The Zone, back when it
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: was still the AM 1300. It was here for 19 years,
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: then went across town. And when the Longhorn games were
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: across town, then came back. So yeah, here we are.
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: So it's good to be back again.
- 1:05:02Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: So we'll actually start with the Longhorn Mondays again, starting
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: on Monday.
- 1:05:07Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: Before we get to hearing more from Longhorn's Well, we're
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: going to hear from Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkeesian a
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: little bit later on this hour. Also coming up in
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: the next segment, Bijan Robinson. In case you missed it,
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: this morning he was on with Dan Patrick. So we're
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: going to do a little encore presentation on here because
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: it's pretty entertaining stuff. And we're going to hear from
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: Brian Schottenheimer here momentarily. But I told you what the
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: pigskin prep computer was thinking about the area. 6A games
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: to start this off. So 5A Division II, which includes
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: the team that Jake Herman broadcast, the Bastrop Bears for VIPE,
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: opens its season tonight. On the road, you'll be hustling
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: over to Montgomery Lake Creek to call that action there
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: between the Bastrop Bears and the Lake Creek Lions. So
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: you'll have that. Also from schools out of that district, Pflugerville,
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: I mentioned, playing Leander. and Pflugerville, according to the computer,
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: is 16 points better than Leander. The computer, Elgin is
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: playing at Mainer, and the computer favors Mainer by eight.
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: Crockett is playing Blanco.
- 1:06:20Speaker 4: That happened last night.
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: And how did that end up?
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: Blanco won big.
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: How big?
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: 61 to 20-something.
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: So people would say they covered the 27 that the
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: computer thought they would win by or whatever. Gerald and Navarro,
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: that's tonight. That game's in Gerald. between Navarro early college prep.
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: So anyway, there was that. So Bastrop and Lake Creek.
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: You care to guess what the computer thinks of that matchup?
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: I'm landing on 17 points for Bastrop as the pick.
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: That's a little more optimistic than the computer thinks, but
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: not much. The computer likes the Bears by 15 points.
- 1:06:58Speaker 9: 15.
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: Okay, I'll take within two.
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: Yeah, you'd be okay with that. Okay. Brian Schottenheimer, Cowboys
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: head coach, getting ready for this preseason finale tonight. against
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: the new Orleans saints and roster cut down day is
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: coming up right after that. It's two days earlier than
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: what it's been in the past. And that wasn't an
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: adjustment for shotting and the staff. You know, the process
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: is still the same. We do it the way we
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: do it.
- 1:07:23Speaker 9: You know, we'll, you know, we'll play the game on
- 1:07:25Speaker 9: Friday and we'll get in here early on Saturday and we'll,
- 1:07:28Speaker 9: you know, blink the film for some of those, you know, last, um,
- 1:07:33Speaker 9: looks if you will and some of these guys that
- 1:07:35Speaker 9: are in contested or heated position battles and we'll have
- 1:07:39Speaker 9: a meeting and we'll dissect a lot of different things
- 1:07:42Speaker 9: and we'll start with one side of the ball or
- 1:07:44Speaker 9: the other and we'll debate and then we'll take a
- 1:07:46Speaker 9: break and we'll come back and we'll debate some more
- 1:07:48Speaker 9: and talk about different things and of course your phone
- 1:07:51Speaker 9: starts to ring and you know people start calling about
- 1:07:53Speaker 9: different things and uh at the end of the day
- 1:07:56Speaker 9: i think you know it's no different than how we
- 1:07:57Speaker 9: do the draft process you know long conversations but real
- 1:08:01Speaker 9: conversations hard conversations disagreements discussions and then hey this is
- 1:08:07Speaker 9: what the Dallas Cowboys are doing in 2026 with final
- 1:08:09Speaker 9: cuts and um the hardest part is you know you
- 1:08:12Speaker 9: bring the guys in and you have to have real
- 1:08:14Speaker 9: conversations with them and tell them that their dream is
- 1:08:16Speaker 9: not over uh just means that their dream might not
- 1:08:19Speaker 9: be with us this year but um I'm very very
- 1:08:21Speaker 9: uh certain that uh The players that we have to
- 1:08:26Speaker 9: move on from will find homes elsewhere because, like I said,
- 1:08:28Speaker 9: we're a very talented roster, and they're incredible young men
- 1:08:31Speaker 9: that are great professionals.
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: Clearly, after the roster cutdown happens, there are guys on
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: the waiver wire all around the National Football League, and
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: the Cowboys will peruse it as well. And so Shottie
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: was asked what he's looking for when he looks at
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: that waiver wire.
- 1:08:50Speaker 9: We look at the talent side of it first because
- 1:08:53Speaker 9: it's hard to get to know these guys. You don't
- 1:08:56Speaker 9: have time to bring them in like you do the
- 1:08:57Speaker 9: rookies for draft visits or free agents. so you've got
- 1:09:01Speaker 9: to go off talent. a lot of these guys we
- 1:09:04Speaker 9: have draft reports on that speak to the character. Um,
- 1:09:07Speaker 9: you know, it's a, you gotta be careful calling your
- 1:09:10Speaker 9: buddy from another team about a player. Cause they might
- 1:09:12Speaker 9: be trying to get them back on practice squad or whatnot. Um, but, uh,
- 1:09:17Speaker 9: it's very similar process. You know, you, you trust the
- 1:09:20Speaker 9: tape first and then you have conversations and you look
- 1:09:22Speaker 9: back at reports. I mean, the personnel guys, they don't
- 1:09:25Speaker 9: sleep really for a couple of nights, 48 hours. So
- 1:09:27Speaker 9: they don't sleep. And, um, But again, I love the
- 1:09:30Speaker 9: give and take that we have between ourselves, Jerry Stephen,
- 1:09:34Speaker 9: Will McClay, and all the personnel guys. It's real conversations,
- 1:09:41Speaker 9: and I.
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: Look forward to it. This was a pretty entertaining exchange here. Now,
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: remember when the Cowboys and Saints had the joint practice.
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: They had the fight. It was an all-out fight. A
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: helmet was thrown. Teams were fined half a million dollars each.
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: So I joked about it yesterday with Isaiah Stanback about
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: whether there'd be more. And Brad Champ, our good friend
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: and voice of the Cowboys, had an exchange with Schottenheimer
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: about would there be a discussion of that joint practice
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: fight before the actual game?
- 1:10:16Speaker 5: Brad. Brad Shan, Cowboys Radio 105.3 The Fan.
- 1:10:19Speaker 6: Before kickoff Friday, will you have felt the need to
- 1:10:23Speaker 6: remind your team that last Tuesday was last Tuesday and
- 1:10:27Speaker 6: there's no need for anything to carry over?
- 1:10:31Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:10:31Speaker 9: I mean, we're into these position battles and things like that.
- 1:10:35Speaker 9: And these guys are excited to go out and play football.
- 1:10:38Speaker 9: And mostly we're excited to be back home in AT
- 1:10:41Speaker 9: & T Stadium and can't wait to watch these guys compete.
- 1:10:45Speaker 7: But as to the question, will you be speaking to
- 1:10:49Speaker 7: them about this today?
- 1:10:50Speaker 9: I talk to our guys about a lot of different things, Brad, so.
- 1:10:54Speaker 5: That's my damn question.
- 1:10:58Speaker 9: He knows I'm not going to answer that question. We're
- 1:11:00Speaker 9: playing off each other right now. It's pretty cool. Do
- 1:11:03Speaker 9: you know what I know that you know that I know?
- 1:11:05Speaker 5: Okay, good.
- 1:11:08Speaker 9: You can ask the same question. I'll answer the same.
- 1:11:10Speaker 4: Pretty good, right?
- 1:11:14Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: And Brad is checking with the schedule, by the way,
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: to see if he can join us next week.
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: One day.
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: But if so, I'm going to ask him about that.
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: That's hilarious. And I like Clarence Hill in the background.
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: Answer the damn question. A man chill.
- 1:11:31Speaker 3: Keep shouty and check this is the same press conference
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: he tried to find the guys who were late so
- 1:11:35Speaker 3: you know they started off on great terms right exactly.
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: Um uh he was asked about the rookie skit that
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: happened with caleb downs and christian parker the defensive coordinator.
- 1:11:46Speaker 9: Well the rookie skit uh he was he was doing
- 1:11:48Speaker 9: really good uh tommy dunn cut him off unfortunately so
- 1:11:52Speaker 9: he couldn't quite finish his christian parker but the mannerisms
- 1:11:55Speaker 9: were very very good uh and uh it was it
- 1:11:59Speaker 9: was it was a lot of laughs but They spend
- 1:12:02Speaker 9: a ton of time together. Christian's one of those guys
- 1:12:05Speaker 9: that he is wanting to be in meetings and wanting
- 1:12:08Speaker 9: to be doing extra. And so they spend a lot
- 1:12:11Speaker 9: of time together. You can see them before practice working together.
- 1:12:14Speaker 9: And I think that's important for any player, but certainly
- 1:12:18Speaker 9: a young guy that has the high expectations of himself
- 1:12:21Speaker 9: that Caleb does.
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: No matter what happens with Jayden Blue, whether he makes
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: the club or practice squad or is released or whatever,
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: One thing that Sean Ivers has been impressed with the
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: former Longhorn with is that the level of maturity that
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: has grown throughout the course of the summer.
- 1:12:37Speaker 9: Yeah, I think he came back. I've said this before.
- 1:12:40Speaker 9: I think he came back with a different mentality, which
- 1:12:44Speaker 9: is great. He's always been extremely bright and picked up
- 1:12:50Speaker 9: the scheme very, very well. It's been good for us
- 1:12:52Speaker 9: to see him take the next step in certain areas,
- 1:12:56Speaker 9: whether it's pass protection, whether it's um you know some
- 1:12:59Speaker 9: of the stuff in the return game um but uh
- 1:13:02Speaker 9: i noticed it i noticed it early on that uh
- 1:13:05Speaker 9: there was a little bit different intentionality about him um
- 1:13:08Speaker 9: but uh again he's got to continue to compete because
- 1:13:10Speaker 9: that's a deep room as well and uh you know
- 1:13:13Speaker 9: we'll uh you know see how we figure out the
- 1:13:15Speaker 9: rotation but uh uh it.
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: Was early on for sure and one more question about
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: the rookie skit uh on the defensive side jay sean
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: barham was asked, or Schottenheimer was asked, what was Barham's
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: role in that rookie skit? That's a good question. He
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: was an extra, I will say. He was involved.
- 1:13:35Speaker 9: He played his part beautifully.
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: Beautifully.
- 1:13:37Speaker 9: Jay Sean, great job. But he was more of an extra,
- 1:13:41Speaker 9: which some of the guys were only extras.
- 1:13:44Speaker 4: He didn't intimidate or he didn't do his impression.
- 1:13:47Speaker 5: Of a coach?
- 1:13:48Speaker 9: He did not, but he was very good, Oscar-worthy of
- 1:13:52Speaker 9: what he did as an extra. All right, Taylor Sheridan,
- 1:13:56Speaker 9: take notice.
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: Okay, there you go. All right, up next, we'll keep
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: it in the NFL, but taking a look not in
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: specific at the Atlanta Falcons, but a conversation with Bijan Robinson,
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: the lifetime longhorn from the Dan Patrick show that aired
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: this morning. That's next, right here on Sports Radio AM
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: 13 Under the Zone. I think I've said this before
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: on the program. I can't remember if you were producing
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: at the time of it. But did you ever hear
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: me tell the first time I ever heard this song?
- 1:14:41Speaker 5: No.
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: This is the fall of 1978. Album came out. This
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: is Van Halen, obviously, Run With the Devil. And it's
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: the first album. And I get off the elevator. I'm
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: a freshman at UNC Wilmington. I get off the elevator
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: to the second floor of Galloway Hall, where my dorm
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: room was. Dorm room was 211 Galloway Hall. A friend
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: of mine down at the end of the hall, I
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: think it was like 217 or 218, was just always
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: on the cutting edge of what was going on with
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: rock and roll. Like I heard out of his room
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: for the first time ever, Hold the Line by Toto.
- 1:15:19Speaker 4: That's okay.
- 1:15:19Speaker 3: This all sounds familiar because I heard this story on
- 1:15:22Speaker 3: Hold the Line. Yeah.
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: Same guy. And you just hear that boom, boom, boom.
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: Going in and out. What in the world is that?
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: First of that sound. Blasting Van Halen.
- 1:15:33Speaker 4: That's movie-like.
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: First time I ever heard it.
- 1:15:37Speaker 10: All right.
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: Here on the Fire Me Up Friday, a little Van
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: Halen to get you fired up as well. We should
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: all be fired up, obviously, for football season. B. John Robinson,
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: one of the nicest, most sincere, pleasurable guys to interview,
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: to visit with. Just a good guy all the way around.
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: Stan Drayton did just an absolutely spectacular job recruiting him.
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: And wound up, of course, with that outstanding career at Texas.
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: Now one of the richest guys in the National Football League.
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: had the largest contract ever given to a running back
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: for a few days before Jameer Gibbs got one that
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: was a little bit bigger. But still, it's a lot
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: of money for Bijan. And this morning, he was on
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: the Dan Patrick Show. And Dan had some questions to
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: ask him about growing up and who his favorites were. And, well,
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: we'll just listen to it. This is from this morning,
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: heard here on 13 Under the Zone.
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: More phone calls coming up. hour two dan and the
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: dan it's dan patrick show he's uh bjorn robinson the
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: falcons running back two-time pro bowler and was the eighth
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: overall pick in the 2023 nfl draft there uh 1400
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: yards last year seven touchdowns rushing four touchdowns receiving good
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: to see you back on the program how you feeling.
- 1:17:01Speaker 7: I'm feeling great man it's good to see you back
- 1:17:03Speaker 7: too um down here in Miami, just trying to finish
- 1:17:07Speaker 7: up his last preseason game. But I was going to
- 1:17:09Speaker 7: be back on the show with you.
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: We want to play guess the poster that Bijan had
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: on his wall growing up of a running back.
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:17:19Speaker 5: Don't. Okay.
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: Did you have a poster on your wall of a
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: NFL running back?
- 1:17:25Speaker 7: I didn't have a poster, but I had a, I
- 1:17:27Speaker 7: had like a, um, action figure of, of, of him.
- 1:17:31Speaker 5: Okay. Okay.
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: So Todd, I'll start with you.
- 1:17:35Speaker 9: Adrian Peterson.
- 1:17:36Speaker 5: All right. Dylan. Eric Dickerson.
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: Ooh.
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: Marvin.
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: LaDainian Tomlinson.
- 1:17:43Speaker 3: Ooh.
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: Paul.
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: Bijan's from Tucson. I'm also going LaDainian Tomlinson.
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: I'm going to say Barry Sanders.
- 1:17:53Speaker 5: Yes, I had both. So I had Barry Sanders and LT.
- 1:17:57Speaker 5: So you guys are both right.
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: Okay. So you met both of them.
- 1:18:01Speaker 5: I have met both of them, yeah.
- 1:18:04Speaker 7: Yeah. They're, uh, they're pretty cool, man. Like, just, so
- 1:18:09Speaker 7: my first time, so my first time actually talking to
- 1:18:12Speaker 7: LaDania was on a text message, and somebody gave me
- 1:18:14Speaker 7: his number, and it was in college, and I was like,
- 1:18:17Speaker 7: this can't be real.
- 1:18:18Speaker 5: Like, somebody actually just, you want to talk to him?
- 1:18:20Speaker 5: And I was like, what?
- 1:18:24Speaker 7: It was a pretty cool moment, and then, you know,
- 1:18:26Speaker 7: Barry Sanders was, I put the Lions the first year,
- 1:18:29Speaker 7: so it was cool, like, kind of meeting them both
- 1:18:31Speaker 7: how I did.
- 1:18:32Speaker 5: And it was, I mean, they're both, they're both the
- 1:18:34Speaker 5: idols right there.
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: Can you explain Barry Sanders? If, if somebody didn't see
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: him run, how would you describe that?
- 1:18:43Speaker 7: I think if you've never seen Barry Sanders or heard
- 1:18:46Speaker 7: of his name, like you would think he's just a normal,
- 1:18:48Speaker 7: normal dude. Like he, just a very down to earth guy, uh,
- 1:18:52Speaker 7: very respectful. And I mean, we were just talking about
- 1:18:57Speaker 7: life for a minute, just how everything's going. Uh, but
- 1:19:00Speaker 7: I could tell if you didn't know Barry Sanders as
- 1:19:03Speaker 7: a legend that he is and all that he's accomplished,
- 1:19:06Speaker 7: like you would think he just another man just walking
- 1:19:08Speaker 7: on the street. Um, which is pretty cool. That's kind
- 1:19:12Speaker 7: of how I live my life too. So it's pretty cool.
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: I remember when I saw him in, I met him
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: in college when he was in college. And so you're
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: just seeing somebody we had not seen before. And, and
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: I've seen all the running backs going back to Jim
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: Brown and Barry to me, like he made people look silly. He, he, he,
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: do you ever, have you ever felt sorry for a defender?
- 1:19:39Speaker 5: Never.
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: Okay. Like if you made somebody embarrassed, you know, like
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: when they have an arm tackle and whiff on you
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: or you jump over somebody, but you never felt bad.
- 1:19:51Speaker 7: That's, that's, that's the, that's the joy that it brings.
- 1:19:53Speaker 7: Like after it happens, you know, you're, you're just smiling.
- 1:19:57Speaker 7: Everybody's energy's up, but it's just that moment. And you're,
- 1:20:01Speaker 7: you know, you, you won in that moment. Once one,
- 1:20:05Speaker 7: you got past him, but it's just the way you
- 1:20:07Speaker 7: did it. And even the way that Barry Sanders did it, Like,
- 1:20:10Speaker 7: it just brings so much joy and confidence in that
- 1:20:12Speaker 7: next play.
- 1:20:12Speaker 5: It's crazy.
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: Anybody ask if they could tackle you? Like, somebody on
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: the street? Does somebody, you know, fans? Does anybody want
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: to try to tackle you?
- 1:20:21Speaker 5: Nobody.
- 1:20:21Speaker 7: I mean, there's been a couple kids that was like,
- 1:20:25Speaker 7: you know, if it was me and you, one-on-one in.
- 1:20:28Speaker 5: The open field.
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: Wait, this is just a fan?
- 1:20:32Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:20:33Speaker 7: And I'm just like, there's a lot of things that
- 1:20:37Speaker 7: you might be able to do in life.
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: Last time I was on or you're on with us,
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: you talked about still pursuing acting Matthew McConaughey with the
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: Texas connection. So is there any update on that or
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: do I need to maybe kick Matthew McConaughey to the
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: curb and hook you up with Adam Sandler?
- 1:21:01Speaker 5: No, no, no. So I've been doing the commercials, which
- 1:21:06Speaker 5: have been fun.
- 1:21:07Speaker 7: I've been about four for this year that's on TV.
- 1:21:14Speaker 7: So those have been really cool. And I think you've
- 1:21:16Speaker 7: got to start somewhere. And just for me, starting at
- 1:21:20Speaker 7: that level has been a blessing. But Matthew McConaughey, we
- 1:21:24Speaker 7: still talk all the time. And I'm actually going to
- 1:21:27Speaker 7: see him next week at the Texas game.
- 1:21:30Speaker 9: So.
- 1:21:31Speaker 7: it's uh it's it's been it's been fun like to
- 1:21:34Speaker 7: to like use my chops a little bit in that
- 1:21:37Speaker 7: space okay yeah acting chops okay all right.
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: Well i i introduced derrick henry to adam sandler okay
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: yeah so derrick henry gets first shot at any acting
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: roles you know for running backs but i can i
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: can put in a.
- 1:21:58Speaker 5: Man don't i would appreciate.
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: It okay help me understand what was going on jameer
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: gibbs and you it felt like who's going first to
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: sign their new contract yeah okay you went first but
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: what what strategy did you and your agent have of
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: it felt like whoever was going second was going to
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: make a little bit more money than who went.
- 1:22:20Speaker 7: First yeah and i mean we knew that um it
- 1:22:25Speaker 7: was more just like For her, Nicole, she just wanted
- 1:22:30Speaker 7: to make sure everything was great. On the contract side
- 1:22:33Speaker 7: that people really don't see. And me, I was getting
- 1:22:40Speaker 7: ready to go. I was like, I want to get
- 1:22:42Speaker 7: on the field. And they were almost done. So that
- 1:22:46Speaker 7: all helped as well. But yeah, I knew when we
- 1:22:50Speaker 7: got done. And then Jameer, if whoever would go second,
- 1:22:54Speaker 7: that would be the case. But it didn't affect me
- 1:22:57Speaker 7: at all. I'm actually very happy for him because we
- 1:23:02Speaker 7: are close. That is one of my really good friends,
- 1:23:05Speaker 7: really outside of the game too, as much as we
- 1:23:07Speaker 7: compete against each other. But it's cool that he has
- 1:23:11Speaker 7: that title, the highest paid, because I know that I
- 1:23:14Speaker 7: got a lot of work to do now to get there.
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: He doesn't make that much more than you. You're going
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: to be fine.
- 1:23:23Speaker 5: I know.
- 1:23:24Speaker 7: It's just a cool feeling to know that position is
- 1:23:30Speaker 7: getting some momentum now.
- 1:23:31Speaker 5: It's cool.
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: How good can the Falcons be this year? And who
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: is going to be your starting quarterback?
- 1:23:39Speaker 7: I think that the sky's the limit for us. We
- 1:23:41Speaker 7: have a lot of great talent on the team. I'm
- 1:23:44Speaker 7: at this point now where I'm not trying to put
- 1:23:47Speaker 7: anything in the world that like, Oh, wants to play
- 1:23:49Speaker 7: all Superbowl. Like we have to, we have to compete
- 1:23:52Speaker 7: for it.
- 1:23:52Speaker 5: We have to, you know, do it one day at
- 1:23:54Speaker 5: a time, obviously.
- 1:23:55Speaker 7: Uh, cause every single year I say we're one game
- 1:23:59Speaker 7: away or, or, or we're so close or we, we
- 1:24:01Speaker 7: needed this win or that win. But now I think
- 1:24:04Speaker 7: that with, with the unit that we have now and
- 1:24:06Speaker 7: the group that we have a team, like, we just
- 1:24:09Speaker 7: want to just go one, one day, one play, uh,
- 1:24:12Speaker 7: one game at a time. Cause we know if we
- 1:24:14Speaker 7: just have that mentality, um, We'll be fine. But for
- 1:24:18Speaker 7: your question on the starting quarterback, and Kevin Stavansky took
- 1:24:22Speaker 7: on this show.
- 1:24:23Speaker 5: After me, you should ask him that question because I
- 1:24:25Speaker 5: have no idea. I have no idea.
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: Where is he right now?
- 1:24:29Speaker 5: He's probably in the middle room or somewhere. Okay.
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: You did a good job trying to juke me, fake
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: me out there.
- 1:24:37Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: So I'll let you off the hook there. You can
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: guarantee that your quarterback, starting quarterback, will be.
- 1:24:46Speaker 5: Left-handed, correct? Correct, yes.
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: Just want to make sure. You're left-handed too, aren't you?
- 1:25:00Speaker 5: Yes, I am.
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: Wait, do you have a touchdown pass?
- 1:25:07Speaker 5: I don't.
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: So it's in the playbook.
- 1:25:11Speaker 7: I mean, not yet, but I think I still got
- 1:25:14Speaker 7: to show them a little bit more. They see what
- 1:25:16Speaker 7: I can do, but it's the confidence level.
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: They're not going to know that you're left-handed like this. Well,
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: they do now. Tomlinson threw seven touchdown passes in his career.
- 1:25:32Speaker 5: He threw seven? Have they all been from the 10-yard in?
- 1:25:36Speaker 5: Or have they been past the 10-yard lead?
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: Oh, do you want to throw a bomb?
- 1:25:41Speaker 5: I mean, I aspire to have that dream.
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: Paulie, how many touchdown passes does LT have?
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: LaDainian Tomlinson in his career as a passer was eight
- 1:25:53Speaker 2: for 12 with seven touchdowns, and three of them were
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: over 20 yards.
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: Wow.
- 1:25:58Speaker 5: Wow. Yeah, me and Tommy have some things to talk about.
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: Come on, Stefanski, offensive-minded guy. Yeah.
- 1:26:07Speaker 7: No, they're very creative, like Kevin and Tommy. very creative, um,
- 1:26:11Speaker 7: what they do. And I really appreciate that. So you
- 1:26:15Speaker 7: never know what, what you can see. All right.
- 1:26:18Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: I think Gail Sayers was, was he left-handed too?
- 1:26:21Speaker 5: Yeah. The classic is Gail Sayers.
- 1:26:26Speaker 7: I want to ask you, do you think Gail Sayers
- 1:26:27Speaker 7: can be, can be who he is in today's game?
- 1:26:31Speaker 5: Yes. Okay.
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: Because of the way he ran. Like Jim Brown probably
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: couldn't be, like he'd be maybe a smaller Derrick Henry.
- 1:26:41Speaker 5: Yep.
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: But Gale Sayers was Barry Sanders before Barry Sanders.
- 1:26:46Speaker 5: Got it.
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: His moves were, nobody had ever seen something like that.
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: get caught up in generations, like that guy couldn't play today.
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: Gale Sayers would be able to play today. Jim Brown
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: was still an unbelievable athlete, but he wouldn't be running
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: over people the way he did back in the 60s.
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: Any other running back you want to ask me about?
- 1:27:13Speaker 7: See, Walter Payton, like, will he be Walter Payton in
- 1:27:16Speaker 7: today's game? Like, will he be his exact same self.
- 1:27:21Speaker 5: Right now?
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: He would be maybe a Christian McCaffrey. Because Walter Payton
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: didn't have great speed, but he had so much determination.
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: You just weren't going to bring him down. Yes, Paul.
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: Walter Payton, Bijan, eight touchdown passes.
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: Dude, you got to get caught up here. And you
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: call yourself a great running back? Come on.
- 1:27:52Speaker 5: That's something I gotta talk about.
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: Does Christian McCaffrey have any touchdown passes?
- 1:27:58Speaker 5: He probably does, honestly.
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: Who's the best running back in the NFL?
- 1:28:08Speaker 5: I'm not sure I'd probably say Are you? I'd probably
- 1:28:14Speaker 5: say like Jameer.
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: Christian Christian McCaffrey has two touchdown passes.
- 1:28:22Speaker 5: Yeah, see, I'm at zero.
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: Dang.
- 1:28:24Speaker 5: I play Wildcat, so I don't know if that counts.
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: No, no, you didn't throw it. No, I want a
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: touchdown pass out of you this year. At least one.
- 1:28:34Speaker 5: Okay, okay.
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: Jameer Gibbs hasn't thrown a touchdown pass.
- 1:28:39Speaker 7: Isolate.
- 1:28:40Speaker 5: So I guess we're the same boat.
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Are you playing tonight?
- 1:28:46Speaker 7: I think they'll let me know. Coming up here in
- 1:28:51Speaker 7: our meeting, so we'll see. I'm regardless, ready or not. Okay.
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: Would you prefer not to get all taped up and,
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: you know, go through the motions and play like one series?
- 1:29:04Speaker 5: I mean, I, I know like me going out there
- 1:29:07Speaker 5: would be great.
- 1:29:08Speaker 7: Uh, just like get my feet rolling and get my
- 1:29:11Speaker 7: feet wet a little bit. Uh, at the same time,
- 1:29:14Speaker 7: like I understand, you know, being healthy and getting ready
- 1:29:17Speaker 7: for week one. So that's always kind of been my
- 1:29:20Speaker 7: thing the past couple of years is, is get ready
- 1:29:22Speaker 7: for week one.
- 1:29:23Speaker 5: Uh, So that's probably going to be, it might be
- 1:29:26Speaker 5: the case here tonight.
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: Do you even take a shower after the game? Like
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: if you don't play, do you even, right?
- 1:29:33Speaker 7: So if I got the uniform on, because I like
- 1:29:37Speaker 7: to wear a uniform, then yeah, I'll take a shower.
- 1:29:40Speaker 5: Okay, all right.
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: Just want to make sure I understand everything goes along
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: with preseason. Go talk to Stefanski and say, hey, coach.
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: is a halfback pass in the playbook. And if not,
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: I want to be like Gale Sayers, LaDainian Tomlinson, Chris McCaffrey.
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: And just tell coach that I suggested that you should
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: throw a pass.
- 1:30:04Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: Let's not get greedy. Let's go 10 yards. And then
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: you want to go 20. Then I'm fine with that. Okay.
- 1:30:15Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: Cool.
- 1:30:16Speaker 5: Cool. But, No, yeah, it was good.
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: Good luck this season, and we hope to catch up
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: with you during the season. But thank you again, Bijan,
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: and congrats on the contract.
- 1:30:29Speaker 5: Yeah, thank you, Dad. It's great talking to you, man.
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: There he is, a guy who's never thrown a touchdown
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: pass in the NFL. And you want to be LaDainian Tomlinson?
- 1:30:40Speaker 5: Yes, Paul.
- 1:30:41Speaker 2: Real cocky, hard-to-like guy.
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: We've said that before about Bijan, all about himself.
- 1:30:46Speaker 2: Jeez, what a nice guy. He's at the Steelers week one.
- 1:30:50Speaker 2: Good stuff from Bijan. I'm with Dan Patrick this morning.
- 1:30:53Speaker 2: And just like the Danettes were saying, just a great guy.
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: They had tongue in cheek saying, oh, all about himself. No,
- 1:31:00Speaker 2: he's just the opposite.
- 1:31:01Speaker 3: Every experience that my friends both in and outside of
- 1:31:05Speaker 3: the media have had with Bijan Robinson, whether it's in
- 1:31:08Speaker 3: a sporting context or not, all echo that same thing.
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: Yep. Just great dude all the way around. So you
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: wish nothing but good things for him.
- 1:31:17Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:31:18Speaker 2: You would You would draft him if you could in
- 1:31:20Speaker 2: your fantasy league, right?
- 1:31:21Speaker 4: I don't think he'll be falling to me in the
- 1:31:23Speaker 4: fifth pick next week.
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: I would. Fifth out of how many?
- 1:31:27Speaker 4: We're at 10.
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: Just like my league, and it's a snake draft, and
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: it'll go back through?
- 1:31:31Speaker 4: Yeah, I like drafting in the middle.
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: You know, most people say you either want to draft
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: at the front end or the back end because you
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: would pick early in the next round for those that
- 1:31:41Speaker 2: are into fantasy football. I can see... the value in
- 1:31:45Speaker 2: doing that but i picked it i think in the
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: middle last year and i didn't mind it.
- 1:31:49Speaker 3: The math says that you're right you know it's better
- 1:31:51Speaker 3: to be at the front of the end but i
- 1:31:53Speaker 3: like drafting in the middle because then you don't get
- 1:31:56Speaker 3: a run of guys at the same position taken before
- 1:31:59Speaker 3: you're up.
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: Exactly and that seems to be in my league as
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: well but what a great guy bjohn robinson is all
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: right uh we're gonna hear from his uh his head
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: coach in college. Well, the second one, it started with
- 1:32:10Speaker 2: Tom Herman and then ended with Steve Sarkeesian. But we're
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: going to hear from Sark coming up next when we
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: continue on this Fire Me Up Friday on Sports Radio
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: AM 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:32:21Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:32:24Speaker 9: It is Friday here.
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: And getting ready for it. Quite the football weekend. High
- 1:32:31Speaker 2: school football tonight around here. A few college games.
- 1:32:35Speaker 10: Tomorrow, the first.
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: weekend of college football and did you read something that
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: said that the ncaa rules are going to adjust to
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: make zero week just a regular week next year starting
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: next year in college football i believe.
- 1:32:49Speaker 4: That's right season will be starting now next year.
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: Okay so no more exceptions or dispensations or you know
- 1:32:59Speaker 2: waivers needed to do that it's just They're just going
- 1:33:02Speaker 2: to do it. I mean, you still are. And that
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: makes sense. You're still maxing out at 12 games. You
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: just have an extra week to get that 12th game in.
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: So maybe, maybe that might be a logical next step
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: in my ongoing battle to say, if you really want
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: to move the college football playoff up to get it
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: done by the end of January, you got to do
- 1:33:23Speaker 2: something with that standalone Army-Navy game. So maybe... Although it's
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: hard to imagine that being the only game on Thanksgiving
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: weekend if you did it that way. But you did
- 1:33:34Speaker 2: it on what would be conference championship weekend. Then you
- 1:33:36Speaker 2: would have your conference championships, right? If you did that.
- 1:33:40Speaker 2: Be weird.
- 1:33:41Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: But maybe you have the conference championship weekend be Thanksgiving weekend.
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: Then have the Army-Navy and then start your playoff the
- 1:33:48Speaker 2: next week.
- 1:33:49Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: But maybe it's a step forward by adding an extra
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: available week of action of college football. football.
- 1:33:56Speaker 4: There's also some off-season changes.
- 1:33:57Speaker 3: You can have two OTA-like practice periods every spring, and
- 1:34:02Speaker 3: there was also a shortening of the transfer portal down
- 1:34:05Speaker 3: to 10 days in January.
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: Okay. All right.
- 1:34:07Speaker 5: Very good.
- 1:34:08Speaker 2: I'm sure Sark will be asked about that on Monday
- 1:34:10Speaker 2: at the press conference, which you'll hear live here on
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: 1300 The Zone. Let's hear from Sark. This was from
- 1:34:16Speaker 2: the Third and Longhorn podcast this week. Coaches, by and large,
- 1:34:20Speaker 2: especially ones who... are still striving to win their first
- 1:34:26Speaker 2: championships and things like that, are a little reluctant, hesitant
- 1:34:32Speaker 2: to talk about legacy when their time as coaches comes
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: to an end. Nevertheless, Steve Sarkeesian was asked, what kind
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: of legacy would he like to leave as head coach
- 1:34:45Speaker 2: when he's done? Because he has said, He plans to
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: coach nowhere else, wants to be the coach of Texas
- 1:34:50Speaker 2: for a long time and then call it a career.
- 1:34:52Speaker 2: So what would he hope his legacy to be?
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: Oh, man, that's tough.
- 1:34:58Speaker 6: Because when you think about the history and tradition here,
- 1:35:01Speaker 6: you know, and you think about all that Coach Royal
- 1:35:05Speaker 6: accomplished in his time here and some of the great
- 1:35:09Speaker 6: teams Coach Akers had that didn't just quite get over
- 1:35:12Speaker 6: the hump. And then you look at what Coach Brown
- 1:35:14Speaker 6: accomplished in his time here. Um, you know, you always
- 1:35:19Speaker 6: want to be able to leave a program better than
- 1:35:21Speaker 6: it was when you arrived. And I think we've gotten
- 1:35:24Speaker 6: to that point and I feel very comfortable in saying that,
- 1:35:27Speaker 6: and that's not trying to be arrogant or pat myself
- 1:35:29Speaker 6: on the back, but I believe that, you know, that,
- 1:35:30Speaker 6: that we've built this program the right way. Um, and
- 1:35:34Speaker 6: I think that we've graduated our players. Our players are
- 1:35:37Speaker 6: doing well in school. We're producing NFL players. Um, we're
- 1:35:41Speaker 6: recruiting well. I think ultimately it's about championships, you know,
- 1:35:45Speaker 6: and that's what the University of Texas is about. And
- 1:35:48Speaker 6: you compete for championships year in and year out. And
- 1:35:52Speaker 6: we have one conference championship in five years, and we
- 1:35:56Speaker 6: haven't won a national championship.
- 1:35:57Speaker 5: We've been close.
- 1:35:58Speaker 6: And so I think ultimately from a legacy standpoint, it's
- 1:36:00Speaker 6: like when people look back on this era, however long
- 1:36:04Speaker 6: it is, I hope it's a long time. If you
- 1:36:05Speaker 6: guys want to know the truth, I really do. I
- 1:36:08Speaker 6: like Austin and I love UT and I just love
- 1:36:12Speaker 6: everything about it. I hope at some point when people
- 1:36:15Speaker 6: look back, one of the topics of conversation will be
- 1:36:19Speaker 6: about the championships we won, right? And that's a journey
- 1:36:24Speaker 6: to win championships with an S, right? And whether that's
- 1:36:28Speaker 6: SEC championships now, national championships, whatever that looks like. And
- 1:36:33Speaker 6: so each year it's like, how do you put forth
- 1:36:37Speaker 6: a team and a staff and a support staff that
- 1:36:41Speaker 6: is in position that can compete for that? Especially in
- 1:36:44Speaker 6: this era of college football, it's different. You know, it's
- 1:36:46Speaker 6: not about what just you did in the regular season
- 1:36:48Speaker 6: and go win one game. Like, you've got to build,
- 1:36:51Speaker 6: you've got to have the crescendo towards the playoffs and
- 1:36:53Speaker 6: then be at your best in November, December, and January.
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: So hopefully, you.
- 1:36:58Speaker 6: Know, when I'm old and gray and you know, there's
- 1:37:01Speaker 6: reminiscing about the championships we won, but beyond that, the
- 1:37:05Speaker 6: people that we produced that came through this university that
- 1:37:08Speaker 6: played under us, that went on to have great NFL careers,
- 1:37:12Speaker 6: like a lot of you, that went on to be
- 1:37:14Speaker 6: great in the business world, like a lot of you,
- 1:37:16Speaker 6: that became great fathers, like a lot of you, right? Husbands,
- 1:37:19Speaker 6: things of that nature, because it's all of that. And
- 1:37:22Speaker 6: that to me is what a legacy is.
- 1:37:26Speaker 2: So in addition to preparing for the season, Sark and
- 1:37:31Speaker 2: other college football coaches may be preparing for more litigation
- 1:37:36Speaker 2: that happens through the courts because it was a Dallas
- 1:37:39Speaker 2: judge who signed that order last night that prohibits the NCAA,
- 1:37:44Speaker 2: the SEC, and Commissioner Greg Sankey from stopping the group
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: of athletes, three of whom are currently listed on NFL rosters,
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: from returning to college for one more season of play.
- 1:37:55Speaker 2: Cowboys wide receiver Jordan Hudson, Chiefs linebacker Wesley Bisante, And
- 1:37:59Speaker 2: Chiefs wide receiver Omari Evans, among the 41 players listed
- 1:38:04Speaker 2: as plaintiffs on the restraining order. Christina Walla and Bailey Maupin,
- 1:38:13Speaker 2: who was a guard at Groover High School in the Panhandle,
- 1:38:17Speaker 2: led them to a state championship. And she ended up
- 1:38:22Speaker 2: playing at Texas Tech, did Maupin. She signed a contract
- 1:38:27Speaker 2: with the WNBA team this summer, but also named. on
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: the order. The case the latest in that growing number
- 1:38:33Speaker 2: of legal challenges to the NCAA's eligibility rules.
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: So we'll see.
- 1:38:38Speaker 2: Judge Martin Hoffman wrote in the order, quote, as long
- 1:38:41Speaker 2: as they would have been eligible to continue playing college
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: sports in the following semester, if they had a fifth
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: year of eligibility, they are eligible today. We'll see where
- 1:38:53Speaker 2: the next step takes us. We'll be back to wrap
- 1:38:55Speaker 2: up today's show and the week here on Sports Radio
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: AM 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
