The Big Moon turn Juliette Jackson’s hearing loss into pop-disco optimism
The Big Moon’s fourth album, “Forever,” turns a difficult personal experience into vibrant pop-disco. In 2024, lead vocalist Juliette Jackson was diagnosed with a cholesteatoma, a destructive cyst in the middle ear that requires surgical removal. It caused her to lose most of her hearing on one side. Jackson described the experience as “pretty much existential,” because writing songs was her job and her identity. When she tried to write again, the songs were so miserable that she disliked them. She then changed direction, imagining what she called “a happy ending that didn’t exist yet.”
