Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Richard Hills: North Shore councillor on more delays for a second Waitemata Harbour crossing
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: A lot of water to go under the bridge, it
- 0:01Speaker 1: would seem before Auckland gets another harbor crossing. Before committing
- 0:05Speaker 1: to a preferred option, we need to properly understand what
- 0:08Speaker 1: should be built, what it will cost, how it will
- 0:11Speaker 1: be funded and finance, and how it will be actually delivered. Yeah,
- 0:13Speaker 1: well sounds fair enough, but we're getting a second business
- 0:16Speaker 1: case despite NZTA already completing an investment case which preferred
- 0:19Speaker 1: a tunnel. Final options expected to twenty twenty seven. Richard
- 0:24Speaker 1: Hill's Auckland or shaw Ward councilor with me this morning, Richard,
- 0:27Speaker 1: good morning, goodad money. Hey, you know Wayne brings me
- 0:30Speaker 1: ol a reef thing?
- 0:31Speaker 2: Is this? Is it ever going to happen?
- 0:34Speaker 3: Like?
- 0:34Speaker 2: Are you even a little bit entertained by it?
- 0:38Speaker 3: The mir and I agree in a lot of things,
- 0:40Speaker 3: but let's just say this isn't our agree to disagree clause.
- 0:43Speaker 3: I don't think personally that Meola reef's a goer, especially
- 0:48Speaker 3: because there's nowhere for it to go. On the other side,
- 0:50Speaker 3: in my opinion, you can't put motorways through a bunch
- 0:53Speaker 3: of suburbs.
- 0:54Speaker 1: So that's the main concern is what you link it
- 0:57Speaker 1: to and having to basically wipe out points v as
- 1:01Speaker 1: opposed to because his argument is, look, eighty percent of
- 1:04Speaker 1: the work is done for you, because eighty percent of
- 1:06Speaker 1: the crossing is a reef already and you only got
- 1:08Speaker 1: the twenty percent to go.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean his point on do you build something
- 1:14Speaker 3: in the same corridor as the current bridge? Does that
- 1:18Speaker 3: make sense? And I understand that, but I just don't
- 1:22Speaker 3: think Meola going through communities on that side and then
- 1:26Speaker 3: the communities on my side of the bridge on you know,
- 1:28Speaker 3: through chats would Birkenheer beach Oven. I'm not just really
- 1:33Speaker 3: sure where it goes. So I think, you know, if
- 1:36Speaker 3: it is investigated as part of the long options or
- 1:39Speaker 3: we can see what information the government already has on
- 1:42Speaker 3: it to rule it in or rule it out, that
- 1:44Speaker 3: would be helpful. But look, I personally don't agree with it.
- 1:47Speaker 1: And the man knows that with the study is can
- 1:50Speaker 1: he make a captain's call and say, yeah, we're going
- 1:52Speaker 1: to put five hundred thousand into the study and pay
- 1:54Speaker 1: for half of it.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Kenny, I'm not sure.
- 1:56Speaker 3: I mean, we don't have a research decision come to
- 2:00Speaker 3: the table. If it's transport making the decision. I also
- 2:04Speaker 3: don't think it would cost a million dollars to show
- 2:07Speaker 3: that it will be a very difficult route to take.
- 2:11Speaker 3: So you know, if it can just be if the
- 2:14Speaker 3: information the government has because they said yesterday it's already
- 2:18Speaker 3: been ruled out, so can we just see that information.
- 2:20Speaker 3: I'm not sure why we need a million dollar another
- 2:23Speaker 3: plan to rule it out.
- 2:25Speaker 1: It's a fair enough question too, Hey, is the problem
- 2:27Speaker 1: that is the problem the crossing or is the problem
- 2:30Speaker 1: that the getting onto the motorway?
- 2:34Speaker 3: It's I mean, I guess what the government's saying, and
- 2:37Speaker 3: I agree with. The bridge is getting old and it
- 2:41Speaker 3: does need resilience, right, so it's going to need some
- 2:44Speaker 3: pretty big upgrades over the years, and it does close
- 2:48Speaker 3: when it's windy. So I understand that we do need
- 2:51Speaker 3: potentially another well, we do need another crossing in the future.
- 2:54Speaker 3: But my view as someone who catches over mostly in
- 2:57Speaker 3: the bus each day, is that the actual bridge itself
- 3:01Speaker 3: is not congested usually, but it's all the other parts
- 3:05Speaker 3: of the network, So the city center when you get
- 3:07Speaker 3: in there, all the on ramps heading into the city,
- 3:09Speaker 3: Esmond and anywhere, and Northcote Road, Tristram, all of those
- 3:14Speaker 3: points leading to the mode away are the issue.
- 3:18Speaker 2: You're right. They're always completely rammed, which is the big problem. Richard.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Thank you for that. Richard Hill's Auckland North Shoreboard counselor.
