- 0:02Speaker 1: Talk to nicely.
- 0:03Speaker 2: The PA system crackled to life on a Thursday during
- 0:07Speaker 2: second period in my junior year of high school. The
- 0:10Speaker 2: familiar tones of the recorded voice filled my classroom.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Lockdown.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Locks. Lights. Out of sight.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Lockdown.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Locks.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Lights. Out of sight. The words kept repeating as Mrs.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Danbury paused at the board and looked up at the
- 0:25Speaker 2: speaker in the corner of the room. Okay, you all
- 0:28Speaker 2: know what to do, she said. rushing toward the classroom
- 0:32Speaker 2: door to shut and lock it. Nervous chatter went up
- 0:35Speaker 2: among the students as we rose from our desks and
- 0:38Speaker 2: moved into position against the wall.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Is this real?
- 0:42Speaker 2: My friend Colin asked as we sat on the floor
- 0:45Speaker 2: with our backs to the wall. Must be, I said.
- 0:49Speaker 2: They'd tell us if it was just a drill. The
- 0:51Speaker 2: sound of helicopter rotors was faintly audible over the recorded
- 0:55Speaker 2: voice of the lockdown alert, and the noise grew louder
- 0:58Speaker 2: as we sat there in the dark classroom After a
- 1:01Speaker 2: few moments, it sounded like the helicopter was right over
- 1:05Speaker 2: the school. A full minute passed before the helicopter moved again,
- 1:09Speaker 2: the noise making it sound like it was going in
- 1:12Speaker 2: circles above the campus. A loud bang, like a door
- 1:15Speaker 2: flying open, sounded outside. Someone yelled in the hall, a
- 1:20Speaker 2: sound that was quickly replaced by automatic gunfire. I slammed
- 1:24Speaker 2: my hands over my ears, along with many other students.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Some of the girls, and even a few of the boys,
- 1:30Speaker 2: covered their mouths as they cried out softly. More gunfire
- 1:34Speaker 2: erupted out in the hallway. It sounded as if there
- 1:37Speaker 2: were four or five guns firing. An inhuman screeching sound
- 1:41Speaker 2: pierced the air, making my eyes go wide. I looked
- 1:45Speaker 2: over at Mrs. Danbury, whose face was drained of all color.
- 1:49Speaker 2: She was the nearest to the door, the nearest to
- 1:52Speaker 2: whatever the hell was going on in the hallway. The
- 1:55Speaker 2: gunfire stopped. and I heard a man shout and then scream.
- 2:00Speaker 2: His wail of pain stopped abruptly with a loud, crashing bang.
- 2:04Speaker 2: I didn't have to see it to know that he'd
- 2:05Speaker 2: been thrown into the lockers lining the hallway. The metallic
- 2:09Speaker 2: bang was enough to tell me that. More gunfire sounded outside,
- 2:14Speaker 2: and then more screaming.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Then there was silence.
- 2:19Speaker 2: For several seconds, we all listened hard for anything outside.
- 2:23Speaker 2: The recorded voice was still going, and the helicopter was
- 2:27Speaker 2: still faintly audible. The sound of running footsteps suddenly came
- 2:31Speaker 2: to us from the hall. The footsteps stopped abruptly, and
- 2:35Speaker 2: a terrible scream erupted just before the door to our
- 2:38Speaker 2: classroom smashed in. A SWAT officer flew backward into the
- 2:41Speaker 2: room and slammed into Mrs. Danbury's desk, which slid several
- 2:46Speaker 2: feet from the impact. Cries of fear came from the
- 2:49Speaker 2: students around me as they saw the soldier was missing
- 2:52Speaker 2: an arm. He'd hit the desk with his mid-back and
- 2:55Speaker 2: had come to rest at an angle that told us
- 2:57Speaker 2: his spine was broken. Once the soldier came to rest,
- 3:01Speaker 2: there was only silence from the hall. It went on
- 3:05Speaker 2: for long enough that I was starting to think the
- 3:07Speaker 2: danger had passed.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Mrs.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Danbury apparently thought the same thing, because she crawled toward
- 3:12Speaker 2: the doorway where the smash door was hanging open. I
- 3:16Speaker 2: don't know what she was trying to do, but as
- 3:18Speaker 2: soon as I saw her move toward the doorway, I
- 3:20Speaker 2: wanted to tell her to stop. Still, I made no sound.
- 3:25Speaker 2: for fear of attracting whatever was outside, if there was
- 3:28Speaker 2: anything there at all. She peeked her head around the
- 3:31Speaker 2: doorjamb to peer into the hall. Her left hand came
- 3:34Speaker 2: up to her mouth, as if trying to keep herself
- 3:36Speaker 2: from getting sick. She stood up and turned around to
- 3:40Speaker 2: face us. Okay, we need to move to another classroom,
- 3:44Speaker 2: she said.
- 3:45Speaker 1: The hall looks.
- 3:46Speaker 2: A long, blistered, red and black arm with a claw-like
- 3:50Speaker 2: hand darted down from the ceiling outside the doorway, and
- 3:53Speaker 2: grabbed Mrs. Danbury by the neck, stopping her words. It
- 3:57Speaker 2: yanked her out of the classroom before any of us
- 4:00Speaker 2: knew what was happening. We heard a scream and a
- 4:03Speaker 2: thunk from outside.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Then Mrs.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Danbury appeared in the doorway again, only she didn't have
- 4:09Speaker 2: any arms. Blood spewed from her massive wounds as she
- 4:13Speaker 2: stepped into the room, looking back over her shoulder with
- 4:16Speaker 2: a dazed look on her face. What she saw there
- 4:19Speaker 2: snapped her out of it. and she started running toward
- 4:21Speaker 2: the wall of windows opposite the doorway. Fountains of blood
- 4:24Speaker 2: poured out of her as she ran past her desk, screaming.
- 4:28Speaker 2: A monstrous, scarred figure that looked like a badly burned
- 4:31Speaker 2: mix between a bear and a baboon darted through the
- 4:34Speaker 2: doorway after our teacher. It leapt, smashing into Mrs. Danbury
- 4:39Speaker 2: just as she reached the window. The two of them
- 4:41Speaker 2: tumbled out, falling to the ground just a few feet below.
- 4:45Speaker 2: My teacher screamed once more outside, before her vocalization stopped
- 4:49Speaker 2: with a terrible ripping sound. All of us students stayed
- 4:53Speaker 2: frozen against the wall, staring at the broken window, waiting
- 4:57Speaker 2: for the thing to come back in.
- 5:00Speaker 1: We should have run, but we didn't. It was all
- 5:04Speaker 1: too much for us.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Eventually, the gruesome sounds from outside stopped, but none of
- 5:10Speaker 2: us were willing to risk standing up and moving toward
- 5:13Speaker 2: the window to see what was happening. Not long after
- 5:16Speaker 2: those noises stopped, we heard a flurry of gunshots from
- 5:19Speaker 2: far off, likely off the high school campus. Hearing those
- 5:24Speaker 2: faraway shots snapped me out of shock. I stood up
- 5:28Speaker 2: and moved slowly to the doorway. I looked out to
- 5:31Speaker 2: see the hallway littered with dismembered bodies.
- 5:34Speaker 1: There was blood all over the place.
- 5:37Speaker 2: A man with a smashed head lay below a huge
- 5:40Speaker 2: and bloody dent in several of the lockers across the hall.
- 5:43Speaker 2: A few other guys and I led the rest of
- 5:45Speaker 2: the class out. We headed toward the evacuation spot and
- 5:49Speaker 2: were about halfway there when we ran into more police
- 5:52Speaker 2: coming into the school.
- 5:54Speaker 1: They took us to safety.
- 5:56Speaker 2: We were told it was an escaped animal from the zoo.
- 5:59Speaker 2: That's even what they said on the news that night.
- 6:02Speaker 2: They said it was a bear, but I know what
- 6:04Speaker 2: I saw.
- 6:06Speaker 1: It wasn't a bear. It wasn't any animal I've ever seen.
- 6:10Speaker 2: And the fact that there's a military research base not
- 6:12Speaker 2: far from our school is just too much of a coincidence.
- 6:17Speaker 2: But those of us who were in that classroom that
- 6:19Speaker 2: day are smart enough to keep our mouths shut.
- 6:22Speaker 1: But we know the truth. We'll always know the truth.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Story 2. Dead All Day Before the lockdown even started,
- 6:33Speaker 1: I knew something weird was going on. And I wasn't
- 6:36Speaker 1: the only one. It was my.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Senior year, and I had a pretty easy schedule. It
- 6:43Speaker 2: was spring, and I could see the end of high
- 6:45Speaker 2: school on the horizon. But that day, a Tuesday, my
- 6:50Speaker 2: concerns turned from the mundane to the insane. At first,
- 6:55Speaker 2: I shrugged off the strange feelings I had. I thought
- 6:58Speaker 2: the teachers were just having an off day. Or maybe
- 7:01Speaker 2: it was me who was having the off day. I
- 7:04Speaker 2: told myself to forget about it until lunch came around.
- 7:07Speaker 2: And I went off campus to get a burger with
- 7:09Speaker 2: my buddy Tom. What's up with the teachers today? Tom
- 7:14Speaker 2: asked as we sat in the fast food drive-thru. waiting
- 7:17Speaker 2: to pay and get our food. I turned, surprised at Tom,
- 7:22Speaker 2: who was usually about as observant as an octogenarian with
- 7:26Speaker 2: failing eyesight. You noticed that too?
- 7:29Speaker 1: I asked. Yeah, man. They're acting really strange.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Mr.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Bemis was just.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Staring at me during first period. His eyes were all
- 7:38Speaker 2: wide and blank.
- 7:39Speaker 1: It was creepy as hell.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Then during second period, Miss Delia forgot how to spell
- 7:44Speaker 2: the word algebra. She just stood there at the board,
- 7:48Speaker 2: her hand up, with the A and the L written.
- 7:51Speaker 2: I swear, she stood there for a full minute before
- 7:54Speaker 2: Courtney Miller asked her if she was alright.
- 7:57Speaker 1: It was weird.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Maybe they all got together and smoked a blunt this
- 8:00Speaker 2: morning or something. I laughed at that, thinking about the
- 8:04Speaker 2: teachers hotboxing one of their minivans. But the laughter didn't
- 8:08Speaker 2: last long.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Tom was right. Something funny was going on.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. Mr. Liu walked super slowly up and down
- 8:16Speaker 2: the aisles while we were taking a test today, I said.
- 8:20Speaker 2: He never does that. He always sits at his desk
- 8:23Speaker 2: and reads or something while we take tests. And how
- 8:26Speaker 2: slow he was walking? You'd have to try really hard
- 8:30Speaker 2: to walk that slowly.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Plus, I caught a whiff of him as he walked
- 8:34Speaker 1: by one time. He stank.
- 8:37Speaker 2: He was wearing cologne or something, but I could smell
- 8:40Speaker 2: something nasty underneath it.
- 8:42Speaker 1: You know what? Tom said.
- 8:44Speaker 2: That made me remember something. You know how Miss Delia
- 8:47Speaker 2: is always so prim and proper? She's a neat freak, right?
- 8:51Speaker 1: I nodded.
- 8:52Speaker 2: I had Delia in one of my afternoon classes. Well,
- 8:56Speaker 2: Tom continued, she looked kind of sloppy in class today.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Her hair was frizzy, her makeup a little, I don't know,
- 9:04Speaker 2: sloppy or something. It didn't connect until you said that
- 9:08Speaker 2: about Mr.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Lou stinking.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Our conversation stopped. as I pulled up to the drive-thru
- 9:13Speaker 2: window to complete the transaction. Then I drove to a
- 9:16Speaker 2: nearby park where we sat on the hood of my
- 9:19Speaker 2: Camry and ate, enjoying the spring day. We got back
- 9:23Speaker 2: to school just in time for class and went our
- 9:26Speaker 2: separate ways. About 20 minutes into class, the lockdown started.
- 9:32Speaker 1: I was in Mrs.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Santiago's class when the alarm went off.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Mrs.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Santiago smiled as if she'd been expecting it, which made
- 9:39Speaker 2: me think it was just a drill. although every other
- 9:43Speaker 2: time they'd done a drill, they'd told us beforehand.
- 9:46Speaker 1: All right, class, Mrs. Santiago said.
- 9:49Speaker 2: We're doing something a little different today. Half of you
- 9:53Speaker 2: are going to stay here in the classroom like a
- 9:54Speaker 2: normal lockdown drill. The other half will follow me to
- 9:58Speaker 2: another location.
- 9:59Speaker 1: It's something new. We're trying to see how it works.
- 10:02Speaker 1: I looked around, furrowing my brow. I didn't see the
- 10:06Speaker 1: logic in it.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Why would half of us leave the classroom to go
- 10:10Speaker 2: somewhere else if there was a threat out there? A
- 10:13Speaker 2: few other kids in the class seemed to share my concern,
- 10:16Speaker 2: but most of them didn't care.
- 10:19Speaker 1: They were simply.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Willing to do what the teacher said. I waited for
- 10:23Speaker 2: more information from Mrs. Santiago, but she didn't do anything
- 10:27Speaker 2: for several minutes. After turning the lights off and locking
- 10:31Speaker 2: the door, she just stood at the front of the classroom,
- 10:34Speaker 2: hands clasped behind her back, looking at us with a
- 10:38Speaker 2: small smile on her lips. Finally, just when I was
- 10:42Speaker 2: about to ask her what was going on, she split
- 10:45Speaker 2: the class in half down the middle, telling those of
- 10:48Speaker 2: us on the left side to come with her and
- 10:50Speaker 2: those on the right to stay in the classroom. I
- 10:54Speaker 2: stood and lined up with the other kids on the
- 10:56Speaker 2: left while those on the right got against the wall.
- 11:00Speaker 2: We followed Mrs. Santiago out of the classroom, taking a right.
- 11:04Speaker 2: I was three kids behind her, peering around them to
- 11:07Speaker 2: watch her, thinking about the strange ways teachers had been acting.
- 11:12Speaker 2: She was in her fifties, with hair that had mostly
- 11:15Speaker 2: gone from black to gray, She wore a floral print
- 11:19Speaker 2: dress with frilly short sleeves. As we walked down the hall,
- 11:24Speaker 2: I saw a drop of blood crawl down the back
- 11:26Speaker 2: of her arm from under the sleeve. It stopped just
- 11:29Speaker 2: above her elbow. A bad feeling seeded itself in my
- 11:33Speaker 2: stomach as we reached the doors to the gym.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Mrs.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Santiago stepped aside and opened one of them to usher
- 11:40Speaker 2: us inside. It was dark inside the gym.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Because all the lights were off.
- 11:45Speaker 2: As soon as I walked through the door, I stepped
- 11:48Speaker 2: aside while the other kids walked past me into the darkness.
- 11:51Speaker 2: I could hear some of them murmuring. They knew something
- 11:55Speaker 2: was wrong. One of the students pulled out a phone
- 11:58Speaker 2: and turned on the flashlight. The illumination revealed other people
- 12:02Speaker 2: in the gym. Teachers, just standing there in the dark
- 12:06Speaker 2: on either side of the doors, making a wide corridor
- 12:09Speaker 2: in which the students now stood. There must have been
- 12:12Speaker 2: a dozen of them. And as the flashlight came on,
- 12:16Speaker 2: They moved in on the students. Screams bounced around the
- 12:19Speaker 2: gym as the teachers attacked the students with knives and
- 12:22Speaker 2: cleavers from the school kitchen. The sickening sound of metal
- 12:25Speaker 2: piercing flesh and blood spilling to the glossy.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Gym floor unleashed a deep fear inside me.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Since I'd stepped aside to the wall when I'd entered
- 12:34Speaker 2: the gym, I was still in the dark. I stumbled
- 12:37Speaker 2: back toward the door, watching in abject horror as knives
- 12:40Speaker 2: plunged into my fellow students. Clammy cold hands grabbed my shoulders.
- 12:45Speaker 1: I panicked.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Throwing an elbow behind me and connecting with what felt
- 12:48Speaker 2: like a nose and mouth. The hands came off of
- 12:51Speaker 2: me as I turned around, seeing Mrs. Santiago standing there
- 12:54Speaker 2: staring at me, her mouth split open and her nose bleeding.
- 12:59Speaker 2: I shoved past her in the doorway, trying to get
- 13:01Speaker 2: away from the gym, but.
- 13:02Speaker 1: She grabbed my left arm with her right hand.
- 13:05Speaker 2: At 18, I was much bigger and stronger than her.
- 13:08Speaker 2: I shoved her as hard as I could. Something ripped
- 13:12Speaker 2: and she fell back against the gym door. but her
- 13:14Speaker 2: hand still gripped my left arm above the elbow. I scrambled,
- 13:18Speaker 2: pulling at her severed arm, ripping it off of me
- 13:21Speaker 2: and throwing it at her feet. I ran, looking back
- 13:24Speaker 2: over my shoulder as Mrs. Santiago stood there, seemingly unaware
- 13:28Speaker 2: that she'd just had her arm removed, staring at me
- 13:30Speaker 2: as I sprinted down the hallway. I ran for the
- 13:33Speaker 2: nearest exit through the empty hallways, past dark classrooms. The
- 13:38Speaker 2: lockdown alarm was still blaring, but I barely noticed it,
- 13:41Speaker 2: The sound of my heart beating seemed louder than any
- 13:43Speaker 2: alarm could ever be. I slowed as I passed Tom's classroom,
- 13:48Speaker 2: clarity coming into my thoughts. I wanted to run out,
- 13:51Speaker 2: but thinking of Tom and my other friends made me
- 13:54Speaker 2: think of all the students that would be in danger.
- 13:56Speaker 1: If I just ran away.
- 13:58Speaker 2: I approached Tom's classroom slowly, glancing through the slender window
- 14:02Speaker 2: into the dark room. I thought I had seen Tom's
- 14:05Speaker 2: fifth period teacher, Mr. Pelham, in the gym.
- 14:09Speaker 1: So when I didn't see anyone in the classroom, I
- 14:11Speaker 1: banged on the door.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Tom!
- 14:14Speaker 1: I whispered loudly at the door between bangs. Tom, it's me, Nate.
- 14:18Speaker 1: I said. Tom appeared out of the darkness. Nate? He
- 14:23Speaker 1: said through the closed door. What are you doing?
- 14:25Speaker 2: It's lockdown, man.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Where's your teacher? I said. I don't know. He left
- 14:31Speaker 1: like five minutes ago. Told us to stay put. Open
- 14:34Speaker 1: the door. We've got to go.
- 14:36Speaker 2: I said.
- 14:37Speaker 1: The teachers, they're killing people.
- 14:39Speaker 2: What?
- 14:40Speaker 1: Tom said, smiling. Tom messed with me, man. This is serious.
- 14:45Speaker 2: I stepped back from the door and glanced both ways
- 14:47Speaker 2: down the hall.
- 14:48Speaker 1: I didn't see anyone. I am serious, I said. Everyone
- 14:52Speaker 1: needs to leave. Come on!
- 14:54Speaker 2: Tom reached for the door handle, but a voice from
- 14:57Speaker 2: inside the classroom stopped him. I couldn't hear exactly what
- 15:00Speaker 2: they said, but Tom's response.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Gave me a clue.
- 15:04Speaker 2: I know we're not supposed to open the door, Tom said,
- 15:07Speaker 2: but this is Nate.
- 15:08Speaker 1: He's no school shooter.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Tom opened the door and let me inside. I closed
- 15:13Speaker 2: it behind me and looked into the darkness at the
- 15:15Speaker 2: students sitting against the wall. We need to go, I
- 15:18Speaker 2: told them. Now, something is seriously wrong. We're supposed to
- 15:23Speaker 2: stay here, one girl whose name I didn't know said.
- 15:26Speaker 2: That's what the drills are all about, remember? I'm telling you,
- 15:30Speaker 2: I said. The drills didn't have this in mind.
- 15:33Speaker 1: It's the teachers.
- 15:34Speaker 2: I watched them kill some of my classmates. There's something
- 15:37Speaker 2: wrong with them. Haven't you noticed anything strange today? I
- 15:40Speaker 2: could see in their eyes that many of the students
- 15:42Speaker 2: had noticed, but none of them moved.
- 15:45Speaker 1: All right, fine, I said.
- 15:47Speaker 2: I'll go get help. Tom, you gonna stay here or
- 15:50Speaker 2: come with me? I'm with you, man, Tom said, looking scared. Okay,
- 15:55Speaker 2: I said to him. Then I turned to the other students.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Someone call 911 if you haven't already. We have, someone said.
- 16:03Speaker 1: They have police on the way.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Lock the door behind us, Tom said to the nearest
- 16:07Speaker 2: student as we turned to the door. It was tempting
- 16:10Speaker 2: to hunker down and wait for the cops to show up,
- 16:13Speaker 2: but seeing what I'd seen, there was no way I
- 16:16Speaker 2: could do it. The teachers had keys to the classrooms,
- 16:19Speaker 2: after all.
- 16:20Speaker 1: We'd be sitting ducks.
- 16:22Speaker 2: I checked the hall before stepping out. Tom followed, shutting
- 16:25Speaker 2: the door softly behind us. We booked it to the
- 16:28Speaker 2: nearest exit and pushed on the metal bars to open
- 16:31Speaker 2: the doors. They came open a few inches and stopped,
- 16:35Speaker 2: the telltale rattle.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Of chains coming from the outside.
- 16:38Speaker 2: They locked the doors, I said in a harsh whisper.
- 16:42Speaker 1: What the hell is going on here? Tom said. I
- 16:45Speaker 1: looked around.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Let's try the faculty area, I said, noticing that we
- 16:50Speaker 2: were near the admin offices.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Maybe they left one of those unlocked. Tom nodded.
- 16:56Speaker 2: We moved cautiously through the halls toward admin, listening hard
- 17:00Speaker 2: and keeping our eyes peeled. We ducked through the doors
- 17:03Speaker 2: denoting the faculty area and saw a flickering orange light
- 17:06Speaker 2: coming from the teacher's lounge. The door was closed, but
- 17:11Speaker 2: like most of the doors in the school, it had
- 17:13Speaker 2: a thin rectangular window off center through which the flickering
- 17:16Speaker 2: light shone. I crept up to the door with Tom
- 17:19Speaker 2: behind me. Taking a deep breath, I looked through the window.
- 17:23Speaker 2: I saw a figure in the middle of the room
- 17:25Speaker 2: staring right at me.
- 17:26Speaker 1: I pulled my head back down.
- 17:29Speaker 2: What?
- 17:30Speaker 1: Tom said. There's someone in there, I said, then stopped.
- 17:35Speaker 2: The image of the figure in the room took a
- 17:36Speaker 2: moment to solidify in my mind. I stuck my head
- 17:39Speaker 2: up again and looked through the window. The vice principal,
- 17:44Speaker 2: a man named Ben Sheridan, was floating in the middle
- 17:47Speaker 2: of the room, his legs and arms outstretched to make
- 17:51Speaker 2: an X with his body. He was naked, and there
- 17:54Speaker 2: was a short wooden spear jammed through his chest. The
- 17:57Speaker 2: orange light was coming out of his eyes, nostrils, and
- 18:00Speaker 2: wide open mouth, flickering as if from an inner fire.
- 18:05Speaker 2: There were also red glowing words and symbols written on
- 18:08Speaker 2: the floors and walls of the lounge, pulsating in time
- 18:11Speaker 2: with the brighter light coming out of Sheridan's face.
- 18:15Speaker 1: He floated just.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Above a glowing circle on the floor, the edges of
- 18:19Speaker 2: which were surrounded by strange symbols and words. I couldn't
- 18:22Speaker 2: read any of the words because they were in another language,
- 18:26Speaker 2: but the symbols looked like they'd been taken right out
- 18:28Speaker 2: of a horror movie. How is this happening? Tom said,
- 18:32Speaker 2: and I realized he was standing behind me. looking over
- 18:35Speaker 2: my head through the window. He sounded on the verge
- 18:38Speaker 2: of tears. This isn't supposed to happen, he continued. This
- 18:42Speaker 2: isn't possible.
- 18:44Speaker 1: We need to get out of here, I said.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Now. We moved past the vice principal's office and the
- 18:50Speaker 2: principal's office, and past the admin office to the doors
- 18:54Speaker 2: used by the faculty. I pushed on one of the doors,
- 18:57Speaker 2: my hope disappearing as it, too, only opened partially before
- 19:02Speaker 2: it was stopped by exterior chains. The principal's office, I said.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Maybe the windows open, or we can break one. Tom nodded,
- 19:10Speaker 2: following along, wringing his hands. As soon as we got
- 19:14Speaker 2: into the office, I could tell that the windows weren't
- 19:17Speaker 2: designed to open. I started looking around for something heavy
- 19:20Speaker 2: I could use to break one of the windows. I
- 19:23Speaker 2: located a heavy teaching award on the desk and picked
- 19:26Speaker 2: it up. It was the shape of an apple attached
- 19:28Speaker 2: to a wooden base. It weighed maybe 10 pounds. I
- 19:33Speaker 2: glanced down at the desk plotter noticing that it was
- 19:35Speaker 2: a calendar. I looked at yesterday's date, reading a note there.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Faculty meeting, 5.30 p.m. Something fell together in my mind.
- 19:46Speaker 2: I was about to tell Tom about it when he spoke.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Someone's coming!
- 19:50Speaker 2: He said in a harsh whisper. We ducked behind the
- 19:53Speaker 2: principal's desk as a figure moved through the hall outside
- 19:56Speaker 2: the office. I heard the door to the office open
- 19:59Speaker 2: and I clutched the award in my sweaty hands, mentally
- 20:02Speaker 2: preparing myself to use it.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Nate Oshman? A woman's voice said. Is that you? I
- 20:09Speaker 1: stood up quickly. holding the heavy award over my head.
- 20:12Speaker 2: It was Christina Henry, a pretty 20-something art teacher I'd
- 20:16Speaker 2: had my junior year. We need to get out of here,
- 20:19Speaker 2: she said, holding up her hands. I don't know what's
- 20:22Speaker 2: happening with the other teachers, but they're killing students.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Yeah, no shit, I said.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Tom stood up, eyeing Christina nervously. She looked normal, and
- 20:32Speaker 2: she sounded genuinely scared, but I wasn't about to let
- 20:35Speaker 2: her near me. Were you at the meeting yesterday?
- 20:38Speaker 1: I asked her.
- 20:39Speaker 2: Taking a shot in the dark. She looked at me
- 20:42Speaker 2: with open curiosity.
- 20:44Speaker 1: The meeting? What are you talking about? Why is that important?
- 20:49Speaker 2: Because I'm guessing that's the last time all the teachers
- 20:52Speaker 2: were together in one room, I said. Whatever happened to them,
- 20:56Speaker 2: someone did it on purpose. You walked past the teacher's lounge.
- 21:00Speaker 2: You must have seen it. I was sick yesterday, Christina said,
- 21:05Speaker 2: apparently seeing the logic in my thinking.
- 21:08Speaker 1: I missed it.
- 21:09Speaker 2: Now, can we please get out of here? Whoever chained
- 21:12Speaker 2: up the doors had to be able to get back
- 21:14Speaker 2: in here somehow. I have a key to all the
- 21:16Speaker 2: exterior doors. We can find the one and get out
- 21:19Speaker 2: of here. I glanced at Tom, who looked at me
- 21:22Speaker 2: with wide eyes, which he shifted down toward the desk.
- 21:26Speaker 2: He was trying to tell me something. Let me think,
- 21:29Speaker 2: I said to Christina, then looked down at the desk.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Tom leaned down and put his hand on top of
- 21:34Speaker 2: a clipboard on the desk. I glanced at it, seeing
- 21:38Speaker 2: it was a list of names.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Teacher's names.
- 21:41Speaker 2: At the top of the sheet, it read, Faculty Attendance.
- 21:45Speaker 2: And right next to Tom's index finger was the name
- 21:48Speaker 2: Christina Henry. Next to her name, a checkmark. I looked
- 21:52Speaker 2: back up to see that she had a gun.
- 21:54Speaker 1: In her hand.
- 21:54Speaker 2: I like you guys,' she said, dropping the scared tone.
- 21:59Speaker 1: I really would have let you go.
- 22:01Speaker 2: You' re both respectful students.' You' re not disruptive.' I really wish
- 22:06Speaker 2: you would have believed me.' She raised the gun. I
- 22:10Speaker 2: threw the heavy award at her, ducking as I did so.
- 22:13Speaker 2: She fired the gun, but missed as she dodged out
- 22:15Speaker 2: of the way of the teacher's award. Tom dove over
- 22:18Speaker 2: the desk and tackled Christina, slamming her against the wall.
- 22:22Speaker 2: They both fell in a tangle on the ground. Tom
- 22:24Speaker 2: scrambled on top of her. She brought the gun up,
- 22:27Speaker 2: but Tom caught her wrist with his left hand. With
- 22:29Speaker 2: his right, he reached out and grabbed the award, then
- 22:32Speaker 2: slammed it down on her face once.
- 22:34Speaker 1: That was all it took.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Seeing what he'd done, he clambered off of her as
- 22:39Speaker 2: if she were hot to the touch. I stepped over
- 22:42Speaker 2: to her and felt her pockets for the keys she
- 22:44Speaker 2: spoke of. I found them and darted out of the office.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Where are you going? Tom cried.
- 22:51Speaker 2: We need to stop this, I said over my shoulder.
- 22:54Speaker 2: I froze when we got into the hall. I could
- 22:56Speaker 2: see through the doors to the faculty area that the
- 22:59Speaker 2: hall was filled with teachers. They all had sharp implements
- 23:03Speaker 2: in their hands and they were all coated in blood.
- 23:06Speaker 2: They stared at me blankly as they hurried down the hall.
- 23:09Speaker 2: I ran toward them, stopping at the teacher's lounge. The
- 23:12Speaker 2: doors to the faculty area were about 15 yards to
- 23:15Speaker 2: my right. The teachers were five yards beyond that. I
- 23:19Speaker 2: tried the knob to the teacher's lounge door, unsurprised to
- 23:23Speaker 2: find it locked. Trying to calm my shaking hands, I
- 23:26Speaker 2: fiddled with the keys, trying two of them before the
- 23:28Speaker 2: doors opened to my right. I had time for three
- 23:31Speaker 2: more out of the dozen on the key ring. To
- 23:33Speaker 2: my left, Tom came out of the principal's office. Oh,
- 23:36Speaker 2: s * * *, man, he said, looking at the
- 23:39Speaker 2: dead-eyed teachers bearing down on me.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Run, Nate, he cried.
- 23:43Speaker 2: I slid a key into the knob and turned it,
- 23:45Speaker 2: amazed to find that it actually worked.
- 23:48Speaker 1: I'd found the key.
- 23:49Speaker 2: I stepped into the room and picked up a chair
- 23:51Speaker 2: from the wall, just as the teachers crowded the doorway
- 23:54Speaker 2: behind me. I stood outside the glowing circle on the
- 23:57Speaker 2: ground and used the chair to shove the floating vice principal.
- 24:00Speaker 2: I had to put all my strength into it, but
- 24:02Speaker 2: it worked. As soon as he reached the opposite edge
- 24:05Speaker 2: of the circle, he fell to the ground. Immediately, the
- 24:09Speaker 2: glowing lights in his face disappeared, leaving only scorched black holes.
- 24:13Speaker 2: The foreign words and symbols all over the floor, walls,
- 24:17Speaker 2: and ceiling stopped glowing too. Behind me, I heard bodies
- 24:21Speaker 2: falling to the floor. I turned around to see that
- 24:24Speaker 2: all the teachers crowding the.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Hallway were now sprawled out. I knew instinctively that they
- 24:29Speaker 1: weren't unconscious. They were dead.
- 24:33Speaker 2: They'd been dead all day. At least now, they weren't
- 24:36Speaker 2: trying to kill us. Behind us, outside the school, the
- 24:41Speaker 2: sound of approaching sirens was like music to my ears.
- 24:47Speaker 2: History class is underway, and there's nothing more boring. I
- 24:54Speaker 2: slide down in my seat and adjust my hooded sweatshirt.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Mrs.
- 24:58Speaker 2: Blaylock used to give me shit about my hood. but
- 25:02Speaker 2: I eventually wore her down. It's not the hood that
- 25:05Speaker 2: I'm concerned with, though. It's the headphones in my ears
- 25:08Speaker 2: under the hood. There are a few classes where I
- 25:11Speaker 2: can get away with listening to music while the teacher
- 25:14Speaker 2: drones on. It takes persistence to make it so the
- 25:18Speaker 2: teachers don't even try, but I'm stubborn, and I like
- 25:21Speaker 2: to get my way.
- 25:23Speaker 1: I zone out while Mrs.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Blaylock goes over World War II. Class is about halfway
- 25:29Speaker 2: over when all the students suddenly perk up and look
- 25:32Speaker 2: toward the PA speaker in the corner of the room.
- 25:35Speaker 2: I reach up and take one of my headphones out,
- 25:37Speaker 2: hearing the familiar instructions of another lockdown drill. It's about
- 25:42Speaker 2: time for one, I think. We do one every month.
- 25:45Speaker 2: I slip the headphone back into my ear. I don't
- 25:49Speaker 2: need to hear the instructions. I already know what we're
- 25:52Speaker 2: supposed to do. I lean forward and get ready to
- 25:55Speaker 2: head to the other side of the room with the
- 25:57Speaker 2: rest of the students. A fast-paced punk rock song plays
- 26:00Speaker 2: in my ears. Everyone stays seated for another minute or so,
- 26:05Speaker 2: and I assume there must be some other announcements or
- 26:07Speaker 2: instructions for this drill. I debate taking my headphones out
- 26:11Speaker 2: to hear them, but it's probably too late now anyway.
- 26:15Speaker 1: I'll just follow the lead of the other students. Mrs.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Blaylock is standing in the front of the room, looking
- 26:21Speaker 2: like she's asleep with her eyes open.
- 26:24Speaker 1: I know the feeling.
- 26:25Speaker 2: The students all stand up at the same time, a
- 26:28Speaker 2: synchronized movement that gives me chills. I stand up too,
- 26:32Speaker 2: shrugging it off as a coincidence. I take a couple
- 26:35Speaker 2: of steps forward to head to the wall, but none
- 26:38Speaker 2: of the other students are moving. I look over at Jared,
- 26:42Speaker 2: who is the only kid in class I can really stand,
- 26:45Speaker 2: and see that he's standing up, just staring ahead.
- 26:49Speaker 1: What the hell is going on?
- 26:52Speaker 2: I think for a second that everyone in class is
- 26:54Speaker 2: playing a prank on me, but that would involve a
- 26:56Speaker 2: level of preparedness that is unthinkable.
- 26:59Speaker 1: For high school students. especially the ones at my school.
- 27:03Speaker 2: The song I'm listening to ends, and there's a moment
- 27:06Speaker 2: of silence before the next one begins. A strange, repetitive
- 27:10Speaker 2: sound comes dully through my headphones, and I feel my
- 27:14Speaker 2: mind slipping away like I'm about to fall asleep. But
- 27:17Speaker 2: it's not pleasant, like drifting off after a long day.
- 27:21Speaker 2: It's downright scary, like my consciousness is being ripped away
- 27:25Speaker 2: from me. The next song starts, and I snap out
- 27:28Speaker 2: of it, coming back to my body, What in the
- 27:31Speaker 2: actual f * * *? I look up at the PA.
- 27:35Speaker 2: There's nowhere else that sound could come from. I pull
- 27:38Speaker 2: out my phone and open Spotify. I go into advanced
- 27:41Speaker 2: settings and select the crossfade songs option so there won't
- 27:45Speaker 2: be any silence between songs. I put my phone back
- 27:48Speaker 2: in my pocket and turn my head. The girl that
- 27:50Speaker 2: sits behind Jared, her name's Amy, is sucking on Jared's neck.
- 27:55Speaker 2: It only takes me a moment to realize she's not
- 27:58Speaker 2: really sucking on his neck.
- 27:59Speaker 1: She's biting it.
- 28:01Speaker 2: She pulls away with a mouthful of flesh and blood
- 28:03Speaker 2: sprays out of Jared's neck, coating Amy's face as she
- 28:06Speaker 2: chews contentedly. Jared doesn't seem to notice. He steps forward
- 28:11Speaker 2: to Hector, the student ahead of him. Jared raises Hector's arm,
- 28:15Speaker 2: then takes a big bite out of it. Hands come
- 28:18Speaker 2: at me from both sides, and I turn to see
- 28:20Speaker 2: dead-eyed students grabbing at me, their mouths watering.
- 28:24Speaker 1: I shove them back and rush to the front of
- 28:25Speaker 1: the room.
- 28:26Speaker 2: I head straight for the door, looking over my shoulder
- 28:29Speaker 2: to see that all the students in the classroom are
- 28:31Speaker 2: now eating each other. Bloody mouths chew, wounds spill blood,
- 28:35Speaker 2: and glazed eyes stare at nothing. Mrs. Blaylock steps toward
- 28:39Speaker 2: me with that same blank yet hungry look on her face.
- 28:42Speaker 1: I turn, running into the hall, and slam right into
- 28:45Speaker 1: the gym teacher, Mr. Hardiman.
- 28:47Speaker 2: He grabs me by the shoulders and ducks his head
- 28:50Speaker 2: forward to take a bite out of me. I snap
- 28:52Speaker 2: my head forward, headbutting him in the nose. We stumble
- 28:56Speaker 2: away from each other. I grip my forehead, wondering how
- 28:59Speaker 2: people do that in the movies without getting hurt.
- 29:02Speaker 1: I've got a serious headache, but it pales in comparison
- 29:05Speaker 1: to the threat of being eaten by Mr. Hardiman.
- 29:08Speaker 2: He reaches toward me again, but I duck him and
- 29:11Speaker 2: run down the hall. Punk rock plays in my headphones,
- 29:14Speaker 2: and I suddenly feel like I'm in a movie with
- 29:16Speaker 2: a kick-ass soundtrack. But a glance into a classroom I'm
- 29:19Speaker 2: passing reminds me that this is no movie. This is
- 29:23Speaker 2: really happening. Everyone has turned to zombies and they're eating
- 29:27Speaker 2: each other. I keep running, heading to the front office.
- 29:31Speaker 2: I slide to a stop outside the office.
- 29:33Speaker 1: Door, looking through the window. I don't see anyone in
- 29:36Speaker 1: the office area.
- 29:38Speaker 2: I don't know exactly where the PA system is located,
- 29:41Speaker 2: but I assume it must be somewhere beyond that office
- 29:43Speaker 2: door in the faculty area. I push through the door
- 29:47Speaker 2: and come to the reception desk that's usually manned by Ms. Kelly,
- 29:50Speaker 2: the administrative assistant. I rush around the desk and trip
- 29:54Speaker 2: over someone, or two someones. I realize as I look
- 29:57Speaker 2: behind me where I am on the floor. Miss Kelly,
- 30:00Speaker 2: once busy eating Principal Daly, now sets her sights on me.
- 30:04Speaker 2: She grabs my left leg while Principal Daly, who was
- 30:07Speaker 2: so badly eaten I thought he was dead.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Sits up from the floor and reaches out for me.
- 30:13Speaker 2: I yell and kick and scramble away, ducking into the
- 30:16Speaker 2: first office I see. As soon as I stand up
- 30:18Speaker 2: in the office, I'm knocked down again as someone in
- 30:21Speaker 2: dark clothing runs into me. We both fall to the floor,
- 30:24Speaker 2: and I'm ready to fend off a hungry mouth, but
- 30:27Speaker 2: the figure clambers up and runs out the door, I
- 30:30Speaker 2: look around the office and see the PA system built
- 30:33Speaker 2: into the wall next to the desk. The microphone is
- 30:36Speaker 2: bent down to a small digital recording device on the desk.
- 30:40Speaker 2: I see that someone has taped the transmit button down.
- 30:43Speaker 2: I rip the tape off and hit stop on the
- 30:46Speaker 2: digital recorder. I pull out my phone and turn down
- 30:49Speaker 2: the volume a little, ready to turn it back up
- 30:51Speaker 2: if I hear that weird noise again.
- 30:53Speaker 1: But I don't.
- 30:55Speaker 2: So I turn my music down some more, and then
- 30:57Speaker 2: I turn it off. I hear a high-pitched sound start up,
- 31:01Speaker 2: which sends my heart skipping and almost has me pushing
- 31:04Speaker 2: play on my phone again.
- 31:06Speaker 1: But I recognize the noise.
- 31:08Speaker 2: It's the sound of hundreds of people screaming. I step
- 31:12Speaker 2: out to the office door and see Miss Kelly and
- 31:14Speaker 2: Principal Daly looking at their wounds, screaming. Principal Daly passes
- 31:19Speaker 2: out as I stand there, unsure what to do. Miss
- 31:22Speaker 2: Kelly looks up at me, tears streaming down her blood-smeared cheeks.
- 31:26Speaker 2: What happened?
- 31:28Speaker 1: She screams. Help me!
- 31:30Speaker 2: All across the school, students and teachers are pouring out
- 31:33Speaker 2: of the classrooms, bloody and missing pieces, screaming in confusion.
- 31:38Speaker 1: I can hear them.
- 31:39Speaker 2: I step back into the office where the PA is
- 31:42Speaker 2: and shut the door for.
- 31:43Speaker 1: A little quiet.
- 31:44Speaker 2: I call 911 and tell them there's been a terrible
- 31:47Speaker 2: incident during a lockdown drill. I tell them to send
- 31:50Speaker 2: all the medical personnel they can. The lady asks me
- 31:54Speaker 2: how many people are injured.
- 31:56Speaker 1: All of them, I say.
- 31:58Speaker 2: Once the call is done, I lean over, depress the
- 32:02Speaker 2: transmit button on the PA, and tell everyone that help
- 32:05Speaker 2: is on the way. I can still hear the screaming.
- 32:08Speaker 2: I look down at my phone again, debating, making a decision.
- 32:13Speaker 2: I turn my music back on, crank the volume, and
- 32:16Speaker 2: go looking for a first aid kit, thankful that I
- 32:19Speaker 2: can no longer hear the screaming. I don't know who
- 32:23Speaker 2: it was that set this whole thing up. I don't
- 32:25Speaker 2: know how it's even possible. But I do know one thing.
- 32:29Speaker 2: I'm never going anywhere without my headphones ever again.
