- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's a Thursday.
- 0:14It's the 28th of November and you have tapped on play and
- 0:18invited me into your day. Thank you for doing that.
- 0:21Hello. Hello and hello.
- 0:23I hope you are going well because today we are going to
- 0:27continue doing what we do, reading another chapter of God's
- 0:31Word. And today we we're continuing
- 0:33this fascinating story in the book of Acts as we see this
- 0:36church start to grow. And we've just gone through this
- 0:40incredible council of Jerusalem where they have decided that
- 0:44actually people don't have to be Jews and they don't have to
- 0:46follow the Jewish rules to be a Christian.
- 0:49But there's a couple of things we'd like them to do just so
- 0:51that we're not offending all the Jews as we build this unified
- 0:55church. And as this happens, we see the
- 0:58split as Paul and Barnabas go their separate ways.
- 1:02And this story really is going to follow Paul from here.
- 1:05And that's not to say that there's not a whole lot of
- 1:07incredible work going on in the church through all those other
- 1:10apostles as they go around preaching.
- 1:13And Jesus is growing his church everywhere through all sorts of
- 1:18people. But Luke chooses Paul and this
- 1:21story to convey to his friend Theophilus that yes indeed, this
- 1:26is not a story about Jews seeing the fulfilment of the law in
- 1:31Jesus, but this is a story about Gentiles discovering that they
- 1:36are indeed created by a loving God and accountable to that God
- 1:42for our lives and our gifts. And so that, friends, that is
- 1:46where we are and that is where we are headed.
- 1:49So let us strap on our backpacks and head on on the road on the
- 1:54second missionary trip that Paul takes as we read together Acts
- 2:00chapter 16. Paul went first to Derby and
- 2:13then to Lystra where there was a young disciple named Timothy.
- 2:17His mother was a Jewish believer, but his father was a
- 2:20Greek. Timothy was well thought of by
- 2:23the believers in Lystra and Iconium, so Paul wanted him to
- 2:27join them on their journey. In deference to the Jews of the
- 2:30area, he arranged for Timothy to be circumcised before they left,
- 2:35for everyone knew that his father was a Greek.
- 2:38Then they went from town to town, instructing the believers
- 2:41to follow the decisions made by the apostles and elders in
- 2:44Jerusalem. So the churches were
- 2:47strengthened in their faith and grew larger every day.
- 2:51Next, Paul and Silas travelled through the area of Phrygia and
- 2:55Galatia because the Holy Spirit had prevented them from
- 2:58preaching the word in the province of Asia at that time.
- 3:02Then, coming to the borders of Mycia, they headed north for the
- 3:06province of Bethania. But again the Spirit of Jesus
- 3:10did not allow them to go there. So instead they went on through
- 3:14Mycia to the seaport of Troas. That night Paul had a vision.
- 3:20A man from Macedonia in northern Greece was standing there
- 3:24pleading with him come over to Macedonia and help us.
- 3:29So we decided to leave for Macedonia at once, having
- 3:33concluded that God was calling us to preach the good news
- 3:36there. We boarded a boat at Tryas and
- 3:40sailed straight across to the island of Summerthrace, and the
- 3:43next day we landed at Neapolis. From there we reached Philippi,
- 3:48a major city of that district of Macedonia and a Roman colony,
- 3:53and we stayed there several days.
- 3:55On the Sabbath we went a little way outside the city to a
- 3:58riverbank where we thought people would be meeting for
- 4:01prayer, and we sat down to speak with some women who had gathered
- 4:04there. One of them was Lydia from
- 4:07Thyatira, a merchant of expensive purple cloth who
- 4:11worshipped God. As she listened to us, the Lord
- 4:14opened her heart and she accepted what Paul was saying.
- 4:18She and her household were baptised and she asked us to be
- 4:22her guests. If you agree that I am a true
- 4:25believer in the Lord, she said come and stay at my home and she
- 4:30urged us until we agreed. One day as we were going down to
- 4:35the place of prayer, we met a slave girl who had a spirit that
- 4:39enabled her to tell the future. She earned a lot of money for
- 4:43her masters by telling fortunes. She followed Paul and the rest
- 4:46of her shouting. These men are servants of the
- 4:49Most High God, and they have come to tell you how to be
- 4:52saved. This went on day after day until
- 4:57Paul got so exasperated that he turned and said to the demon
- 5:01within her, I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out
- 5:05of her. And instantly it left her.
- 5:10Her masters hopes of wealth were now shattered.
- 5:13So they grab Paul and Silas and drag them before the authorities
- 5:16at the marketplace. The whole city is in an uproar
- 5:19because of these Jews. They shouted to the city
- 5:22officials, They are teaching customs that are illegal for us
- 5:25Romans to practise. A mob quickly formed against
- 5:29Paul and Silas and the city officials ordered them stripped
- 5:33and beaten with wooden rods. They were severely beaten and
- 5:38then they were thrown into prison.
- 5:40The gaoler was ordered to make sure they didn't escape, so the
- 5:44gaoler put them into the inner dungeon and clamped their feet
- 5:48in the stocks. Around midnight, Paul and Silas
- 5:52were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners
- 5:56were listening. Suddenly there was a massive
- 5:59earthquake and the prison was shaken to its foundation.
- 6:03All the doors immediately flew open and the chains of every
- 6:07prisoner fell off. The gaoler woke up to see the
- 6:11prison doors wide open. He assumed the prisoners had
- 6:14escaped, so he drew his sword to kill himself, but Paul shouted
- 6:19to him, Stop, don't kill yourself, we're all here.
- 6:24The gaoler called for lights and ran to the dungeon and fell down
- 6:28trembling before Paul and Silas. Then he brought them out and
- 6:33asked, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
- 6:38They replied, Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved
- 6:43along with everyone in your household.
- 6:46And they shared the word of the Lord with him and with all who
- 6:49lived in his household. Even at that hour of the night,
- 6:53the gaoler cared for them and washed their wounds.
- 6:56Then he and everyone in his household were immediately
- 7:00baptised. He brought them into his house
- 7:03and he set a meal before them and he and his entire household
- 7:07rejoiced because they all believed in God.
- 7:11The next morning, the city officials sent police to tell
- 7:13the gaoler, let those men go. So the gaoler told Paul, the
- 7:19city officials have said you and Silas are free to leave, go in
- 7:24peace. But Paul replied, they have
- 7:27publicly beaten us without a trial and put us in prison, and
- 7:32we are Roman citizens. So now they want us to leave
- 7:36secretly, certainly not let them come themselves to release us.
- 7:42When the police reported this, the city officials were alarmed
- 7:46to learn that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens.
- 7:49So they came to the gaol and apologised to them.
- 7:52Then they brought them out and begged them to leave the city.
- 7:56When Paul and Silas left the prison, they returned to the
- 8:00home of Lydia. There they met with the
- 8:02believers and encouraged them once more than they left town.
- 8:19Jesus, you are a God of peace and a God of wholeness, and you
- 8:25rule over a very broken world, our Lord.
- 8:29This world, as you so know, is held in the grip of the evil 1
- 8:35where there is hurt and distrust and greed and selfishness and
- 8:39war that just ravages all the corners of our globe.
- 8:48Jesus, we pray for your spirit, your spirit of wholeness and
- 8:52forgiveness and freedom to wash through our world.
- 8:58And Lord, all of those who are oppressed and struggle for the
- 9:03basic rights and all of those oppressions which break your
- 9:07heart as you see your children. Lord, I pray that Your way would
- 9:12be done here on earth as it is in heaven.
- 9:18And Lord, open our eyes and open our hearts so that we can see
- 9:21the part that we have to play in shaping this world to be more
- 9:25like the place You want it to be.
- 9:31Holy Spirit, come shape our hearts, attune us so that we can
- 9:39see Your priorities and that that can shape the way that we
- 9:42choose to live our lives, but always living in the surefire
- 9:47knowledge of your love and Your grace for us.
- 9:52Our Lord, I pray that this love would be known throughout the
- 9:54world and that all people can know you and your love for them.
- 10:02For you are the antidote to all that is wrong with our world.
- 10:06So we praise you, our holy and good and righteous and wonderful
- 10:13and powerful God, and we pray that your will be done.
- 10:18All of this in your name, Jesus, Amen.
