- 3:34Speaker 1: I am thinking about doing an episode just for our
- 3:40Speaker 1: community calendar because it is packed, absolutely jammed. There is
- 3:47Speaker 1: so much happening in our community. I don't even know
- 3:53Speaker 1: where to begin. I have glanced at the world. I've
- 3:56Speaker 1: had a look at it, and I see everything that's happening.
- 3:59Speaker 1: It is amazing. Just a quick programming note here June fourth,
- 4:07Speaker 1: which is is that really truly? A week from today,
- 4:12Speaker 1: Jen Guy, the director of Human Skills and Student Engagement,
- 4:18Speaker 1: is going to be my guest here on the Airdow
- 4:21Speaker 1: podcast from Sweethearts and Heroes and an amazing lady who's
- 4:26Speaker 1: done amazing things. About two thousand elementary school students and
- 4:32Speaker 1: about one hundred high school students from six North Country
- 4:37Speaker 1: schools have participated in the Community Days and are still
- 4:46Speaker 1: involved with this in the month of May and coming
- 4:50Speaker 1: up in June with Sweethearts and Heroes. These high schoolers
- 4:56Speaker 1: in these school districts are absolute lutely smashing barriers and
- 5:03Speaker 1: doing remarkable, remarkable things with the help, yes of their
- 5:09Speaker 1: teachers and the administrators at their schools, and of course
- 5:12Speaker 1: with the great help of Sweethearts and Heroes. But they're
- 5:15Speaker 1: just doing incredible, incredible things. This is basically obstacle courses
- 5:24Speaker 1: and team challenges that are similar to the Spartan supported
- 5:31Speaker 1: races that these high school students completed at Sweethearts and Heroes.
- 5:36Speaker 1: The first couple of days of that youth Leadership summit
- 5:42Speaker 1: last September, and with me is Haley Septon on the line.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Good morning, Haley, how are you hi?
- 5:50Speaker 3: Good morning, I'm great. How are you?
- 5:51Speaker 2: So glad to have you?
- 5:53Speaker 1: You know, man, it's like Rick and Tom loudon all
- 5:59Speaker 1: of these guys. I have been singing your praises for
- 6:03Speaker 1: weeks now. I've been hearing about you, and I only
- 6:07Speaker 1: hope to meet you someday. I hope that will happen us.
- 6:12Speaker 1: So you're a senior at Taekwonder Roga.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Yes, that is correct, Okay.
- 6:17Speaker 1: So you're are you allowed to I'm assuming you're allowed
- 6:21Speaker 1: to to break free from from your studies and hop
- 6:24Speaker 1: on the air.
- 6:24Speaker 2: With us here, are you?
- 6:25Speaker 3: Oh?
- 6:26Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, of course, it's wonderful.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Tell us a little bit about you. You're you're a senior.
- 6:31Speaker 1: You're graduating very soon.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Yes, less than a month actually.
- 6:36Speaker 1: And you're headed where I'm headed.
- 6:39Speaker 4: To Vanderbilt University in the fall. I'll be studying biomedical engineering.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Biomedical engineering at Vanderbilt.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Yes, that is correct.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Wow, smart kid. Thank you, Young lady, I should say,
- 6:59Speaker 1: young lady, how old are you?
- 7:01Speaker 3: I'm eighteen, eighteen.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Years old and you're going to be doing this. This
- 7:05Speaker 1: is amazing.
- 7:06Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm pretty excited. It's still it doesn't feel real.
- 7:10Speaker 2: And you're at the top of your class right now, right, Yes,
- 7:14Speaker 2: I am.
- 7:14Speaker 4: I actually found that out when Loudon and Abby were
- 7:19Speaker 4: at my school the other day doing another type of
- 7:21Speaker 4: interview vale. Yes, wow, I am.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Good for you.
- 7:29Speaker 1: You tell us about how you got involved with sweethearts
- 7:34Speaker 1: and heroes and how this is changed your life. I
- 7:38Speaker 1: know that you're already changing the lives of so many kids,
- 7:41Speaker 1: But how what's your story? How did you discover this?
- 7:44Speaker 1: How did you get involved?
- 7:46Speaker 3: Yeah? So my story it's pretty complex. Honestly.
- 7:51Speaker 4: I started with Sweearts and Heroes in tenth grade. At
- 7:56Speaker 4: that point in my life, I wasn't necessarily thriving in
- 8:00Speaker 4: the academic classroom, one could say. So ninth grade, I
- 8:05Speaker 4: was pretty focused on school. Actually so focused that I
- 8:10Speaker 4: kind of went through a period of burnout. And that's
- 8:15Speaker 4: kind of where I was, you know, all throughout my
- 8:18Speaker 4: sophomore year. It was just not really caring about school
- 8:22Speaker 4: too much, not really caring about the sports that I
- 8:24Speaker 4: was in, just you know, not really caring about too
- 8:27Speaker 4: many things going on.
- 8:29Speaker 3: In my life. I was. I was only struggling. I was,
- 8:34Speaker 3: you know, a young kid.
- 8:35Speaker 4: I didn't really know who I was yet, and a
- 8:38Speaker 4: lot of teenagers faced that struggle, but I was facing
- 8:42Speaker 4: it pretty hard.
- 8:45Speaker 3: So I was, you know, sophomore, didn't really know who I.
- 8:49Speaker 4: Was, struggling to stay motivated in school and with all
- 8:54Speaker 4: my activities that I was involved in. And then Tom
- 9:00Speaker 4: and Rick came to my school in December of my
- 9:03Speaker 4: sophomore year and gave a presentation. It was the first
- 9:07Speaker 4: time I'd ever seen anything about them. I believe i'd
- 9:10Speaker 4: maybe seen them on on social media, but I didn't
- 9:13Speaker 4: really know who they were, and you know, Tom spoke
- 9:17Speaker 4: and I remember listening to him sitting in the auditorium
- 9:21Speaker 4: and thinking to myself, Okay, this guy, he seems to
- 9:24Speaker 4: know he's talking about a little bit. And then Rick
- 9:29Speaker 4: came came in. Rick walked in and he gave a presentation,
- 9:34Speaker 4: and I remember just that moment really has been a
- 9:40Speaker 4: changing point or a pivoting point for me in my life.
- 9:44Speaker 4: Listening to Rick speak about his experiences and just listening
- 9:49Speaker 4: to the ways that he had to persevere through all
- 9:52Speaker 4: the things that had happened to him.
- 9:54Speaker 3: And you know how his whole his whole memo, his whole.
- 9:57Speaker 4: Message is you gotta you gotta have hope in order
- 10:01Speaker 4: to get through a lot of these difficult things in
- 10:04Speaker 4: your life. And you know, I said this to to
- 10:08Speaker 4: loud in the other day. I said, it's incredibly hard
- 10:11Speaker 4: to accept your own defeat after hearing Rick's story, And really,
- 10:16Speaker 4: that is what happened to me. I was kind of
- 10:18Speaker 4: giving up on myself. I wasn't motivated anymore in school.
- 10:21Speaker 4: I didn't feel like I had anything going for me
- 10:24Speaker 4: until I listened to Brick speak on that day. And
- 10:27Speaker 4: from that moment forward, I kind of I knew that
- 10:31Speaker 4: this was something that I wanted to be involved in.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Isn't that remarkable? So you're you're really paying attention here
- 10:39Speaker 1: of what's being said and letting this into your not
- 10:45Speaker 1: only your ears, but also your your soul. You're really
- 10:48Speaker 1: really dialed in here at at a young age. That's
- 10:51Speaker 1: that's so cool.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:53Speaker 4: I definitely was, especially during that presentation. I've always been
- 10:57Speaker 4: someone who pays attention to things. I'm very meticulous with
- 11:03Speaker 4: my approach to life, especially school, at least most.
- 11:07Speaker 3: Of the time.
- 11:08Speaker 4: I don't like to let things slide or go unnoticed.
- 11:12Speaker 4: So I definitely I was. I was tuned into every
- 11:14Speaker 4: word that both of them spoke on that day.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Were you so you were struggling a little bit in
- 11:20Speaker 1: your life at this time?
- 11:22Speaker 3: Oh definitely.
- 11:23Speaker 4: Yeah. I had a lot of things going on, a
- 11:27Speaker 4: lot of mental health problems. To be completely honest. Mental
- 11:33Speaker 4: health was definitely a struggle for me in tenth grade,
- 11:37Speaker 4: and I was kind of, you know, trying to find
- 11:41Speaker 4: ways to deal with it, and the ways that I
- 11:43Speaker 4: was dealing with it weren't very healthy mentally or physically,
- 11:49Speaker 4: you know, kind of self medicating doing things like that.
- 11:52Speaker 3: I just I wasn't.
- 11:53Speaker 4: I wasn't doing well, and I didn't have a lot
- 11:56Speaker 4: of good relationships surrounding me with my parents, with my friends,
- 12:02Speaker 4: really with anyone. I didn't have a good relationship with myself,
- 12:06Speaker 4: so that affected all the people around me. And you know,
- 12:11Speaker 4: I'd always my entire life. I have two parents who
- 12:14Speaker 4: are teachers. My entire life had always been super super
- 12:17Speaker 4: focused on school. And then in tenth grade, I just
- 12:20Speaker 4: I burnt out. I didn't care anymore. I didn't see
- 12:23Speaker 4: the point in my academics anymore, because I really I
- 12:27Speaker 4: didn't see the point in anything at that point in
- 12:30Speaker 4: my life.
- 12:33Speaker 1: So if you don't mind my asking, yeah, of course, yeah.
- 12:42Speaker 1: I mean I heard you say self medicating, and I'm
- 12:45Speaker 1: just wondering what that if you can shed some more
- 12:49Speaker 1: light on that, what what that looked like.
- 12:51Speaker 2: What that was?
- 12:52Speaker 4: Yeah, of course, I like to stay vague at first,
- 12:55Speaker 4: just to not go to into detail.
- 12:57Speaker 3: But really I was just I.
- 13:00Speaker 4: Was smoking a lot of we doing a lot of
- 13:03Speaker 4: things like that. You know, typical teenager going out and
- 13:07Speaker 4: partying on the weekends, except it wasn't on the weekends.
- 13:10Speaker 4: It was seven days a week, which I mean isn't
- 13:15Speaker 4: really healthy. For anyone, But it wasn't good for me
- 13:18Speaker 4: as a as a high.
- 13:20Speaker 3: School kid to be doing that all the time.
- 13:24Speaker 4: It was an outlet for me. It was the only
- 13:26Speaker 4: way that I knew how to deal with everything that
- 13:29Speaker 4: was going on in my life.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Wow.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Yeah, do you feel that that meeting the guys from
- 13:40Speaker 1: Sweethearts and Heroes that your school, bringing them into your
- 13:45Speaker 1: school was definitely a pivotal moment for you? Is this
- 13:52Speaker 1: something that really we already know it had an impact
- 13:59Speaker 1: on you, but it can have an impact on someone
- 14:01Speaker 1: and and and that's great, but they can still go
- 14:05Speaker 1: on and slip back. Was this was this a turning
- 14:08Speaker 1: point for for you? Meeting these guys and hearing their
- 14:12Speaker 1: their message.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Oh, I one hundred percent.
- 14:19Speaker 4: Honestly believe that I would not be maybe even graduating
- 14:24Speaker 4: high school if that, If that presentation never happened, I
- 14:28Speaker 4: was so just shut, shut away and turned away from everything.
- 14:36Speaker 4: It definitely it was a turning point. It affected so
- 14:39Speaker 4: many things for me later on down the road. Not immediately,
- 14:44Speaker 4: but it kind of when it came in and spoke,
- 14:47Speaker 4: it just it planted a seed of you know, Okay,
- 14:50Speaker 4: Rick and Rick and Tom, they they got through all
- 14:54Speaker 4: of these these hard things in their life, especially Rick,
- 14:58Speaker 4: and it kind of just planted the seed like, you know,
- 15:00Speaker 4: if he can do that, so can I. And from
- 15:05Speaker 4: that moment forward, I think I I was kind of
- 15:08Speaker 4: disappointed with myself prior to them coming in. I was like, okay, Haley,
- 15:14Speaker 4: like why are you doing this? Why are you smoking
- 15:16Speaker 4: so much weed.
- 15:17Speaker 3: All the time?
- 15:18Speaker 4: Why are you not unlocking your your full potential anymore?
- 15:22Speaker 4: Like what's going on?
- 15:24Speaker 3: So it was a wake up call.
- 15:26Speaker 4: For sure, and meeting them and speaking with them, they're
- 15:30Speaker 4: good people and you can just tell when you talk
- 15:34Speaker 4: to them and when you meet them, and everybody in
- 15:38Speaker 4: my school kind of understood that. Collectively. We wanted them
- 15:43Speaker 4: to come back immediately.
- 15:45Speaker 2: And you're in what grade at this point, ninth grade?
- 15:48Speaker 2: Tenth grade?
- 15:49Speaker 3: This was tenth grade.
- 15:50Speaker 4: So they came to my school tenth grade, and tenth
- 15:52Speaker 4: grade was really that low period that you.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Know as a sophomore though. It's like, you know, you
- 16:00Speaker 1: have conversations when you're around other adults, but you also
- 16:06Speaker 1: have a whole separate kind of a conversation when you're
- 16:09Speaker 1: around your peers, which I'm guessing you know, uh, tenth grade,
- 16:15Speaker 1: there's there's a lot of goofing around.
- 16:17Speaker 2: There's a lot of goofing around.
- 16:20Speaker 1: What were you saying to your peers about this, for
- 16:26Speaker 1: lack of a better term, this transformation that you were
- 16:30Speaker 1: going through as a result of Sweethearts and Heroes. What
- 16:33Speaker 1: were you saying to your your peers about these guys
- 16:36Speaker 1: and about how this was impacting you.
- 16:42Speaker 4: In regards to the transformation itself. Honestly, I think I
- 16:47Speaker 4: didn't really have to say anything.
- 16:48Speaker 3: People could just see it. They could see the the.
- 16:53Speaker 4: Effects of their their impact in my life. As for
- 16:59Speaker 4: what I was saying to my friends and just you know,
- 17:02Speaker 4: the people around me.
- 17:04Speaker 3: Right in the beginning, it was, you know, things were
- 17:09Speaker 3: a little.
- 17:11Speaker 4: Blurry. We didn't we didn't really know exactly what was
- 17:13Speaker 4: gonna happen with Sweet Heroes. We the first program we
- 17:17Speaker 4: did with them was actually the Braves program, and I
- 17:20Speaker 4: was involved with that, But that didn't really happen until
- 17:24Speaker 4: I believe it was later on in my sophomore year
- 17:26Speaker 4: or the beginning of my junior year. So it took
- 17:29Speaker 4: time for things to kind of come together.
- 17:33Speaker 3: But I remember just.
- 17:37Speaker 4: The the the talk around the school of that presentation.
- 17:43Speaker 4: It didn't really die down ever, we'd go to lunch,
- 17:47Speaker 4: and you know, it kind of get brought up at
- 17:49Speaker 4: least once, I don't want to say every day, but
- 17:53Speaker 4: at least every couple of days, like oh yeah, you
- 17:55Speaker 4: remember this or remember what he said referencing Rick or
- 17:59Speaker 4: Tom or whatever. And you know, a lot of the
- 18:01Speaker 4: kids in my school were also pretty fascinated with Tom's
- 18:05Speaker 4: past of you know, the fighting, and they just they
- 18:09Speaker 4: idolized him, and they idolized Rick for everything that he
- 18:12Speaker 4: had done too.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Can you imagine? Can you imagine being in a high
- 18:19Speaker 1: school without sweethearts and heroes?
- 18:24Speaker 4: No, I honestly, I think I probably would have dropped
- 18:29Speaker 4: out at some point, if I'm being completely honest, And
- 18:31Speaker 4: I know that sounds really extreme, but I was very
- 18:35Speaker 4: extreme at that point in my life, and.
- 18:39Speaker 3: I really truthfully just did not care. I was fed
- 18:42Speaker 3: up without sweethearts and heroes.
- 18:45Speaker 4: I don't think that ever would have changed. Maybe I
- 18:49Speaker 4: would have graduated high school, maybe not. I wouldn't have
- 18:52Speaker 4: gone on to do anything worthwhile. I know that for
- 18:56Speaker 4: a fact.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Wow, what a test. You know? Tom is?
- 19:01Speaker 1: Tom is as you well know, he is a guy
- 19:06Speaker 1: that has a brain that never shuts off. He's always
- 19:15Speaker 1: he goes from zero to sixty and half a second.
- 19:18Speaker 1: He has all these acronyms brave and hope and.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Others.
- 19:26Speaker 1: There's so many different programs and so many different philosophies
- 19:30Speaker 1: that he's incorporating with sweethearts and heroes? Is this overwhelming
- 19:34Speaker 1: at any point to you?
- 19:37Speaker 4: It's actually it's funny that you bring that up, because
- 19:41Speaker 4: I remember this past year. I think it was it
- 19:44Speaker 4: might have been Christmas Day, honestly, or maybe it was
- 19:47Speaker 4: New Year's. It was one of those two. He sent
- 19:50Speaker 4: me a text about something. I don't remember exactly what
- 19:53Speaker 4: it was, but I remember thinking to myself, you know,
- 19:57Speaker 4: this guy, he's still he's still working, he's still going,
- 20:01Speaker 4: and I just I notice that because I find myself
- 20:06Speaker 4: doing that a lot too.
- 20:07Speaker 3: I'm very passionate about the things that I do.
- 20:09Speaker 4: I enjoy the things I do at this point in
- 20:12Speaker 4: my life, whether it be you know, math or science,
- 20:15Speaker 4: whatever it is, but it kind of consumes the way
- 20:19Speaker 4: that I operate because it's I do what I love
- 20:23Speaker 4: and Tom, I believe, is the same exact way he's
- 20:28Speaker 4: texting me on Christmas, New Year's whatever, because his mind
- 20:32Speaker 4: has it never shuts off like you just said, and
- 20:36Speaker 4: I just I respect that. You know, somebody who really
- 20:40Speaker 4: is passionate about the work that they do. It's it's
- 20:43Speaker 4: not a job to him all. Maybe sometimes I'm sure
- 20:46Speaker 4: it gets overwhelming with emails and meetings, but you know,
- 20:50Speaker 4: the work itself is something that he is passionate about
- 20:54Speaker 4: and something that he wants to do. And you know,
- 20:59Speaker 4: not everybody. He operates that way now. Everybody finds the
- 21:02Speaker 4: thing that they love to do. So I think I
- 21:08Speaker 4: respect it and it makes me want to work with
- 21:11Speaker 4: him even more.
- 21:13Speaker 1: What I was going to ask you about that. You know,
- 21:15Speaker 1: Tom sent me a text saying, before you have Haley on,
- 21:20Speaker 1: we gotta talk this. This This lady is the real deal.
- 21:26Speaker 1: She really gets it. She really embraces everything that we're
- 21:31Speaker 1: trying to accomplish with. Sweethearts and Heroes? Are you You're
- 21:36Speaker 1: you're set and sail here soon for for Vanderbilt. Are
- 21:40Speaker 1: you going to be staying in touch with Tom and
- 21:42Speaker 1: Sweethearts and Heroes?
- 21:43Speaker 2: Are you?
- 21:43Speaker 1: What are you going to be doing? And I want
- 21:45Speaker 1: to hear what you've been doing at school? You're you're
- 21:49Speaker 1: you're doing a huge presentations on on bullying.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Am I right?
- 21:54Speaker 3: Yes? I am so yep.
- 21:59Speaker 4: So in terms of what I'm gonna be doing, I
- 22:01Speaker 4: honestly I don't know. And I was thinking about that
- 22:04Speaker 4: about five minutes before I called in.
- 22:09Speaker 3: It's something that I want to stay involved in, and
- 22:13Speaker 3: I know that for a fact.
- 22:15Speaker 4: I am going to be living in Nashville, Tennessee, which
- 22:18Speaker 4: is about fifteen hours away. So the logistics of that,
- 22:22Speaker 4: I'm not sure exactly how it's gonna happen.
- 22:24Speaker 3: And you know, I.
- 22:28Speaker 4: Really I think as a person, I am aligned with
- 22:31Speaker 4: everything that SweeTarts and heroes is striving to accomplish and
- 22:34Speaker 4: everything that they want to do.
- 22:35Speaker 3: And I know that, and it makes me.
- 22:38Speaker 4: Very intrigued as to the possibilities and the opportunities that
- 22:42Speaker 4: could come from that sort of alignment. Obviously, I want
- 22:49Speaker 4: to go to college get my degree in engineering and
- 22:53Speaker 4: math and science because that's what I love, That's where I.
- 22:58Speaker 3: What my interests are. To my core.
- 23:03Speaker 4: Tom and I talked about doing some sort of calls
- 23:06Speaker 4: or you know, some sort of online presence, I guess
- 23:14Speaker 4: because I am going to be so far away, but
- 23:17Speaker 4: I'm interested to see what exactly will happen with that.
- 23:20Speaker 3: I hope we can figure something out.
- 23:22Speaker 1: What have you been doing for the last year or
- 23:26Speaker 1: so with these yarns at your school. Uh, what do
- 23:32Speaker 1: you what are you saying to them about? How are
- 23:35Speaker 1: you representing sweethearts and heroes? And what are you saying
- 23:37Speaker 1: to them about bullying?
- 23:40Speaker 3: Yeah? So, I mean.
- 23:44Speaker 4: We've been doing We've been crafting our STEP program at
- 23:48Speaker 4: our school, which I'm sure you've heard about. Step is
- 23:51Speaker 4: a program where you can get a certification to present,
- 23:57Speaker 4: you know, presentations on on to kindergarteners.
- 24:02Speaker 3: All the way up to second graders.
- 24:04Speaker 4: And we spent a while figuring out what our presentations
- 24:09Speaker 4: were going to be and practicing them, running through them.
- 24:12Speaker 4: We actually we did our first STEP presentations on my birthday,
- 24:18Speaker 4: I believe.
- 24:19Speaker 1: Wow.
- 24:20Speaker 3: Yeah, it was awesome. It was a lot of fun.
- 24:24Speaker 4: And we follow the general script of the Sweet arson Heroes,
- 24:27Speaker 4: the one that they provide, but we kind of we
- 24:30Speaker 4: give it our own spinoff. You know, it's not a
- 24:33Speaker 4: copy and paste exactly what Tom and Rick do. It's
- 24:37Speaker 4: our own story, which I find very interesting. And I've
- 24:41Speaker 4: seen so many different kids in my school just have
- 24:44Speaker 4: so much fun figuring out what they want their little
- 24:48Speaker 4: hook to be for their presentation. And you know, the
- 24:51Speaker 4: elementary school kids.
- 24:53Speaker 3: They love it.
- 24:54Speaker 4: They listen to every word that we say and they
- 24:59Speaker 4: I mean, I think the information definitely gets into their
- 25:02Speaker 4: heads because we keep it simple. You know, we reiterate
- 25:06Speaker 4: the same things over and over to make sure that
- 25:09Speaker 4: they grasp onto it. I mean my hook I dressed
- 25:14Speaker 4: up as a football player, and my opening scene, I guess,
- 25:20Speaker 4: was me running in to.
- 25:23Speaker 3: The they call it the fish bowl.
- 25:25Speaker 4: It's like an auditorium, but I was running into this
- 25:28Speaker 4: room with you know, rock music, playing with a football
- 25:32Speaker 4: helmet on and holding a football, trying to duke out
- 25:36Speaker 4: these kids, or doing a spin move, running all around them,
- 25:39Speaker 4: and they thought it was awesome, and they got super excited,
- 25:42Speaker 4: super hyped up. They thought it was fun. And doing
- 25:47Speaker 4: that getting them excited, getting them to think that what
- 25:50Speaker 4: I'm about to do is fun, it makes them listen
- 25:54Speaker 4: a little bit more.
- 25:55Speaker 3: It helps them to listen a little bit more.
- 25:59Speaker 1: So, and you know, you have there's a ton of
- 26:02Speaker 1: responsibility with something like this, and listen, I'll tell you.
- 26:07Speaker 1: And not to sound like an old man here, but
- 26:09Speaker 1: this stuff was out of the question when I was
- 26:15Speaker 1: your age, these conversations were not happening. Teachers were there
- 26:20Speaker 1: to teach and students were either bullied or they weren't,
- 26:28Speaker 1: and they took care of things on the playground or
- 26:32Speaker 1: they didn't.
- 26:34Speaker 2: But there weren't.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Conversations about this, and there most certainly wasn't conversations that
- 26:40Speaker 1: were trickling down from other students, especially ones that were
- 26:46Speaker 1: a few years older than us.
- 26:48Speaker 2: This was just not happening at all.
- 26:52Speaker 4: Yeah, there's there's certainly been a change. And the change
- 26:59Speaker 4: started when I was in elementary school. There was a
- 27:01Speaker 4: bunch of presentations on bullying and respect and responsibility, you know,
- 27:07Speaker 4: don't call people names, don't hit people whatever.
- 27:10Speaker 3: None of it really stuck.
- 27:13Speaker 4: I mean, we would have a different person come into
- 27:17Speaker 4: our school every single year, like when I was from
- 27:21Speaker 4: the ages of first grade to sixth grade. And I
- 27:26Speaker 4: think our school similar to a lot of schools around us,
- 27:32Speaker 4: we've been kind of looking for something that would be
- 27:36Speaker 4: effective and fun and engaging, but I.
- 27:40Speaker 3: Guess most importantly effective. We wanted something that would work.
- 27:43Speaker 4: And I think that Sweearts and Heroes and all of
- 27:47Speaker 4: their programs that they have, the Brace program, the Step program,
- 27:50Speaker 4: and soon the Hope program, I think is what it's
- 27:54Speaker 4: going to be called, Yeah.
- 27:55Speaker 1: Which is an acronym for hold on possibilities exist.
- 27:59Speaker 3: Yes, exactly.
- 28:01Speaker 4: But all these programs, they're effective, they're fun. Kids want
- 28:07Speaker 4: to do them, they want to come to school to
- 28:08Speaker 4: do it. I've talked to a bunch of even high
- 28:10Speaker 4: school kids that are like, oh, we have braves, Okay,
- 28:13Speaker 4: I'll come to school today.
- 28:15Speaker 3: It's it has that sort of effect, and it has
- 28:17Speaker 3: that sort of effect on the elementary school kids as well.
- 28:21Speaker 4: I've established quite a few relationships with kids in first grade,
- 28:27Speaker 4: second grade. You know, it's it's how it's how society works.
- 28:32Speaker 4: Young kids idolize older kids.
- 28:34Speaker 3: Yes we could.
- 28:36Speaker 4: We could say anything and they would they would listen
- 28:38Speaker 4: to it with with.
- 28:40Speaker 3: No filter or no. You know, they listen to every
- 28:44Speaker 3: word that we say.
- 28:46Speaker 4: So we've we've certainly, I guess not used that to
- 28:50Speaker 4: our advantage, but we've utilized that because you know, like
- 28:55Speaker 4: I said, the kids are going to listen to older
- 28:58Speaker 4: kids better than they would listen to their teacher or
- 29:01Speaker 4: their parent a lot of the time.
- 29:03Speaker 1: What was this youth leadership summit like for you last September.
- 29:11Speaker 3: The one with all of the older kids.
- 29:14Speaker 2: Yes, that that that you were part of.
- 29:17Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, that's that's a great question.
- 29:22Speaker 4: You know, I really I didn't know what to expect
- 29:24Speaker 4: going into that summit, into that Spartan race. It was
- 29:27Speaker 4: a I believe, three day, two day ordeal three three.
- 29:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:34Speaker 4: When I tell you, you know, my guidance counselor words it
- 29:38Speaker 4: this way. She wishes that she could take all of
- 29:43Speaker 4: the emotion and all of the you know, the vibe
- 29:50Speaker 4: that the atmospheric five of those three days, and all
- 29:53Speaker 4: of that, all of that feeling, and put it into
- 29:55Speaker 4: a bottle and you know, and pour it out on
- 30:00Speaker 4: days where bad things happen, where kids aren't feeling good.
- 30:07Speaker 4: She was just she could harness that energy and use
- 30:11Speaker 4: it later on to offset bad things, I guess, or
- 30:15Speaker 4: bad days that would happen in.
- 30:17Speaker 3: Our school or in our school environment.
- 30:22Speaker 4: I've never seen so many kids from so many different
- 30:28Speaker 4: backgrounds and schools, with so many different interests and hobbies
- 30:33Speaker 4: come together, face to face, look at each other in
- 30:36Speaker 4: the eye, not worry about who was texting them or
- 30:41Speaker 4: you know, their snapchat notifications, whatever it may be.
- 30:44Speaker 2: You didn't have any phones.
- 30:46Speaker 4: We didn't have any phones, And there are so many
- 30:48Speaker 4: people that were very hesitant to that idea at first,
- 30:52Speaker 4: you know, like Oh no, I'm gonna sneak my phone.
- 30:54Speaker 3: I'm not doing that.
- 30:55Speaker 4: But on day one, we all we played some game
- 31:00Speaker 4: outside and there was not a single phone in sight,
- 31:03Speaker 4: and that was It was awesome. It was a huge
- 31:08Speaker 4: relief to just to look people in the eye and
- 31:13Speaker 4: meet them and ask them.
- 31:15Speaker 3: You know, what's your name, where are you from, what
- 31:18Speaker 3: are your hobbies? Want to go do this?
- 31:21Speaker 4: There was no there was no distraction, I guess like
- 31:25Speaker 4: a phone would be.
- 31:28Speaker 1: You're gonna you're going to miss this a little bit
- 31:33Speaker 1: when you head off to Nashville.
- 31:35Speaker 3: Oh yeah, definitely, definitely.
- 31:39Speaker 1: But you know, Tom has given you some remarkable life
- 31:46Speaker 1: skills and tools that you're going to be able to
- 31:50Speaker 1: utilize in your life.
- 31:54Speaker 3: Yes that I think about that a lot.
- 31:57Speaker 1: Yeah, far outside of the classroom.
- 32:02Speaker 2: You can be.
- 32:04Speaker 1: Valedictorian till the cows come home. But in the end,
- 32:10Speaker 1: having a mindset like this and trudging forward through life
- 32:17Speaker 1: having this knowledge and this ability to be able to
- 32:25Speaker 1: see things through a different lens is really really important.
- 32:30Speaker 1: And God bless Tom and Louden, and Rick and Brian
- 32:38Speaker 1: and Pat and the rest of the team over at
- 32:40Speaker 1: Sweethearts and Heroes for having such a profound impact on
- 32:46Speaker 1: just one person, and that would be you. And like
- 32:49Speaker 1: you know, like these guys say, and I incorporate this
- 32:53Speaker 1: into my podcast too, if we could just change or
- 32:57Speaker 1: help one person, that's all we're looking to do. And
- 33:03Speaker 1: they've they certainly have done that with you, Haley.
- 33:06Speaker 3: They certainly have.
- 33:07Speaker 4: I am so incredibly grateful for everything that they have done,
- 33:12Speaker 4: and it was so unexpected. I mean, looking back now,
- 33:18Speaker 4: I see all of the things that they've done for
- 33:22Speaker 4: me and all the ways they've affected not only me,
- 33:24Speaker 4: but my entire school.
- 33:25Speaker 3: Yeah, it is crazy.
- 33:28Speaker 4: And like you said, if you can help one person,
- 33:32Speaker 4: that's that's what you have to start with.
- 33:33Speaker 3: That's what you need to focus on, because when.
- 33:36Speaker 4: You help one person, that that person can go on
- 33:39Speaker 4: to help others.
- 33:40Speaker 3: And that those are.
- 33:41Speaker 4: The the things I have in my toolbox. I guess
- 33:45Speaker 4: now as I go forward, there's a there's a handbook,
- 33:49Speaker 4: a step by step process on how to solve most
- 33:53Speaker 4: of the math problems out there. You know, you can
- 33:56Speaker 4: study scientific facts and learn anything you could possibly want
- 34:02Speaker 4: about a lot of things in the academic world.
- 34:07Speaker 3: But I knew that, and I was good at that,
- 34:10Speaker 3: but I didn't know how.
- 34:11Speaker 4: To necessarily do life, and so many teenagers all across
- 34:16Speaker 4: the country they don't know how to.
- 34:18Speaker 3: How are you supposed to?
- 34:19Speaker 4: You know, it's your first time living, it's your first
- 34:22Speaker 4: time experiencing all of these things, and especially as a
- 34:25Speaker 4: young kid, not knowing who you are and trying to,
- 34:30Speaker 4: I guess, figure out the distinction between who you are
- 34:33Speaker 4: and who you want to be. I really struggle with that,
- 34:37Speaker 4: and all the ways that swe Arts and Heroes help
- 34:41Speaker 4: me figure that out. I believe it's really it set
- 34:45Speaker 4: me up for success in the future. There's no doubt
- 34:48Speaker 4: in my mind. I've been through a lot of hard things,
- 34:51Speaker 4: and because of SweeTarts and Heroes, I've learned how to
- 34:55Speaker 4: handle those hard things. Life isn't always going to be easy,
- 34:59Speaker 4: and I know that, and I understand that pretty well.
- 35:03Speaker 4: But you know, I personally, I believe you know, I've
- 35:07Speaker 4: hit rock bottom.
- 35:08Speaker 3: A lot of people have.
- 35:11Speaker 4: I think it's only up from here, and not necessarily
- 35:16Speaker 4: in a linear way. But I'm I think I'm set
- 35:23Speaker 4: up pretty well.
- 35:24Speaker 1: I think you are too, Haley. I hope listen, it
- 35:27Speaker 1: would be great to meet you at some point someday.
- 35:30Speaker 1: I don't know how, I don't know where probably with
- 35:31Speaker 1: Tom will figure that out. But thank you ever so
- 35:35Speaker 1: much for hopping on the air with me this morning.
- 35:38Speaker 4: Yes, of course, thank you for having me. I'd love
- 35:40Speaker 4: to meet you as well. I think that'd be pretty cool.
- 35:43Speaker 4: And you know, as a senior, I don't have too much.
- 35:45Speaker 3: Going on anymore.
- 35:47Speaker 2: Yeah right, it's just beginning.
- 35:50Speaker 1: And you know, I would be willing to wager that
- 35:55Speaker 1: that old king Tom's got a lot misty in the
- 36:01Speaker 1: eyes going this morning, listen, listening to you. He's received
- 36:07Speaker 1: many compliments from many adults over the years, and has
- 36:12Speaker 1: experienced compliments in seeing young children and the effects that
- 36:17Speaker 1: Sweethearts and Harris has had on them. But to hear
- 36:21Speaker 1: a young woman like you give this kind of testimony
- 36:26Speaker 1: is pretty powerful stuff. I think you just made his day.
- 36:31Speaker 3: I hope I did.
- 36:32Speaker 4: One of my long term goals is to be able
- 36:36Speaker 4: to give it back to him in some way, shape
- 36:39Speaker 4: or form. I don't know what it will look like,
- 36:41Speaker 4: but I know when.
- 36:44Speaker 3: I want something, I get it.
- 36:46Speaker 4: I am a pretty determined person overall, so I hope
- 36:50Speaker 4: to be able to do that for him one day.
- 36:53Speaker 1: Thank you Harley so much. You made my day too.
- 36:58Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 37:00Speaker 2: You're very welcome.
- 37:02Speaker 3: Boy.
- 37:02Speaker 1: Wow, what a what a testimony right there from an
- 37:07Speaker 1: eighteen year old senior at Taekwonder Roga High School. Amazing, amazing, Wow.
- 37:23Speaker 1: You know, listen, in the short time that I have
- 37:28Speaker 1: known Tom and the gang at Sweethearts and Heroes, in
- 37:35Speaker 1: that short time, I have realized more than ever that
- 37:40Speaker 1: I have and I've done a lot of interviews, and
- 37:43Speaker 1: I've been connected with a lot of wonderful organizations and
- 37:48Speaker 1: people over the years. But man, it's like I am
- 37:51Speaker 1: so blessed that Sweethearts and Heroes came to my daughter's
- 37:56Speaker 1: school and that I have been introduced to these guys.
- 38:03Speaker 1: Our Wednesday Morning partnership is something that I am so
- 38:07Speaker 1: excited about and I look forward to so much every week,
- 38:14Speaker 1: and I'm already looking forward to next Wednesdays. Wednesday mornings.
- 38:20Speaker 1: This is the day of the week when the world
- 38:25Speaker 1: newspaper comes out and Deb Phillips is with us this morning. Deb,
- 38:31Speaker 1: good morning, Good morning, Jad.
- 38:33Speaker 5: How are you this morning?
- 38:34Speaker 1: I'm well, I'm well, Today's the big day. What's in
- 38:38Speaker 1: the world? What can we expect?

- 38:46Speaker 5: we have the this week is the gunner Brook Kids
- 38:49Speaker 5: Fishing Derby on Saturday. Wow, all good, good stuff.
- 38:55Speaker 2: I forgot all about that.
- 38:57Speaker 1: See, this is what you guys, this is why you
- 38:59Speaker 1: guys do to remind us of these amazing events. That's
- 39:03Speaker 1: that's been around for a billion year's depth.
- 39:07Speaker 5: Well I'm pretty close to a billion. I think this
- 39:09Speaker 5: is their ninety sixth annual gunner Brook Kids Fishing Derby.
- 39:14Speaker 2: Amazing. Yeah, what else?
- 39:16Speaker 1: What else can we find in the world today?
- 39:19Speaker 5: Well, we have lots of good specials. We have the
- 39:24Speaker 5: Pump and Pantry in Williamstown, we have the Granite City
- 39:29Speaker 5: Market in Berry, all good grocery specials, just more so
- 39:38Speaker 5: much stuff.
- 39:40Speaker 1: And folks want to know. This is being delivered to
- 39:45Speaker 1: homes now.
- 39:47Speaker 5: Homes in the five six oh two. Still still working
- 39:51Speaker 5: on the the five six four to one, so hopefully
- 39:56Speaker 5: soon we'll be able to mail that in the Berry
- 40:00Speaker 5: area too.
- 40:01Speaker 1: And always easy to advertise. It's such a great paper
- 40:05Speaker 1: to thumb through. But what's the easiest way to advertise?
- 40:10Speaker 1: Just pick up the phone and give you guys a call,
- 40:12Speaker 1: or send you an email.
- 40:14Speaker 5: That's perfect, say that or send us an email either way,
- 40:17Speaker 5: that's either that's perfect to do.
- 40:20Speaker 2: I always look forward to it.
- 40:21Speaker 1: I know Chris will be here anytime now, walking through
- 40:24Speaker 1: the front door of the studio with my world paper,
- 40:28Speaker 1: and I just look forward to unplugging for ten minutes
- 40:33Speaker 1: maybe if I can, today and looking through the world
- 40:37Speaker 1: love the paper.
- 40:37Speaker 5: Deb sounds good, Jadi, thanks so much.
- 40:40Speaker 1: Yes, in a big hello to Gary over there this
- 40:43Speaker 1: morning from all of us. We'll do all right, Thank you.
- 40:46Speaker 2: Deb. Listen.
- 40:49Speaker 1: I hope whoever you are, wherever you are, whatever town
- 40:52Speaker 1: you're living in, I hope that you're getting outside today
- 40:56Speaker 1: and you're getting some fresh air, and you're taking in
- 40:59Speaker 1: a little bit of vitamin D and some sunshine and
- 41:02Speaker 1: some fresh air. Yesterday was amazing to be outside, to
- 41:07Speaker 1: sit there with my crocs on and watch Lily play
- 41:12Speaker 1: softball in a softball game, with the sun on my face,
- 41:17Speaker 1: my sunglasses actually over my eyes. Was amazing to be
- 41:25Speaker 1: able to need sunglasses. It was incredible. But it can
- 41:30Speaker 1: be another beautiful day today and then we're right back
- 41:32Speaker 1: to it. Rain, cold clouds the whole nine yards with
- 41:37Speaker 1: what I'm hearing is a nor Easter, the second nor Easter,
- 41:43Speaker 1: and there's a two percent odd of a northeaster hitting
- 41:48Speaker 1: New England this time of year, two percent, and we
- 41:51Speaker 1: just had one.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Now we're gonna have our second one this weekend.
- 41:57Speaker 1: Upper level disturbance and barometric boundaries, and I don't care
- 42:03Speaker 1: what they call it. We call it clouds, cold and
- 42:08Speaker 1: rain here in New England and we're getting really sick
- 42:12Speaker 1: of it, mother Nature. If you're listening this morning to
- 42:15Speaker 1: the aired out podcast, sitting right next to me, one
- 42:20Speaker 1: of the best looking dudes in one of my best
- 42:23Speaker 1: friends of all time, Chris Autrey, Good morning, buddy.
- 42:26Speaker 2: I've never had that kind of introduction before, and I'm
- 42:30Speaker 2: just glad this is recorded so I can play that
- 42:32Speaker 2: over and over again. No one's ever called me the
- 42:36Speaker 2: best looking dude in the world. Well look at you,
- 42:38Speaker 2: but thank you man. And listen, this is vacation dressed Chris,
- 42:42Speaker 2: Like you're like we switched, Like you're you're dressed up
- 42:45Speaker 2: like you're going to a business meeting or something today
- 42:47Speaker 2: and I'm I'm on vacation, bro, Like I'm I'm just datie.
- 42:52Speaker 2: I'm getting old man. Listen.
- 42:54Speaker 1: So you were up here for one hundred years, you
- 42:57Speaker 1: moved back down home to North Carolina, where you've you've
- 43:02Speaker 1: been for a couple of years, about three years. Yeah,
- 43:05Speaker 1: and now you're back up here. This is where you
- 43:09Speaker 1: choose to come back for vacation.
- 43:12Speaker 2: We we always said and we left that we would
- 43:16Speaker 2: that we would try to make time to vacation in
- 43:19Speaker 2: New England. We love New England. I mean absolutely, it's
- 43:23Speaker 2: not out of our bond. I watched I watched a
- 43:26Speaker 2: new heart show man and I I cry every time
- 43:29Speaker 2: when I see Vermont and hear Vermont and think about Vermont,
- 43:32Speaker 2: and it's harder and hard to watch it, even though
- 43:34Speaker 2: it's really funny. But uh, every time we hear something
- 43:37Speaker 2: about New England, we take we take some pride in
- 43:39Speaker 2: our hearts. So, yeah, we can't do it every year,
- 43:42Speaker 2: but if I can do it every so many years,
- 43:45Speaker 2: that's kind of the plan. So we decided last year
- 43:48Speaker 2: this was gonna be the year and we're gonna make
- 43:50Speaker 2: our first vacation and come up and experience at all
- 43:53Speaker 2: and heading back heading to PA to do the same thing.
- 43:55Speaker 2: Really back home.
- 43:56Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you told me when you left Vermont and
- 44:00Speaker 1: you were moving back home, you said, to be a
- 44:03Speaker 1: private conversation off there. You said, we have made so
- 44:07Speaker 1: many roots here we've established, we have fallen in love
- 44:12Speaker 1: with so many people and have made some really incredible relationships.
- 44:17Speaker 2: Yep, and we have no intention of letting those slip
- 44:23Speaker 2: through the cracks. Right. Yeah, that's the really hard part
- 44:26Speaker 2: when you're on vacation. You want to see everybody and
- 44:28Speaker 2: you can't. I've got to we we leave tomorrow and
- 44:32Speaker 2: to head to PA and uh, man, I'm just you know,
- 44:35Speaker 2: there's there's a couple people I'm not going to be
- 44:36Speaker 2: able to see today. And but yeah, you're buddy, this
- 44:40Speaker 2: is Becka and I were talking about it. You know.
- 44:42Speaker 2: I we we left everybody, we knew everything, we knew
- 44:47Speaker 2: and built roots in Pennsylvania and here and really established
- 44:51Speaker 2: your own identity and the whole whole kitt in caboodle
- 44:53Speaker 2: and so man it it how could you?
- 44:57Speaker 3: Man?
- 44:57Speaker 2: I mean, we were we were family. You know. The
- 44:59Speaker 2: hard part is really is is that there are moments
- 45:03Speaker 2: I want to come back because somebody is going through
- 45:06Speaker 2: something or need to come back, and I can't. I
- 45:10Speaker 2: can't because we have things pressing where we are. But
- 45:15Speaker 2: when we can, man, we want to.
- 45:17Speaker 1: And you have you you've been up here with with
- 45:19Speaker 1: mission groups, with with not one but two floods that
- 45:23Speaker 1: we've had, well, just.
- 45:24Speaker 2: I just with the one. I came just with one,
- 45:26Speaker 2: the first one, the first one, Yeah, yeah, I came
- 45:29Speaker 2: just with the first one. I wasn't able to come
- 45:30Speaker 2: in the second one. We've in North Carolina, we've had
- 45:34Speaker 2: our own flooding with Helene, and it was it hands down,
- 45:40Speaker 2: you know, all the officials, myself included. I was on
- 45:44Speaker 2: the ground about a week after the flood. It's worse
- 45:48Speaker 2: than Katrina. I mean, just absolutely worse to Katrina and I.
- 45:50Speaker 2: And I was on the ground a few months after Katrina,
- 45:53Speaker 2: and I thought, when I mean, that was horrific.
- 45:57Speaker 1: But you said to me after, uh, I'm trying to
- 46:02Speaker 1: plank the last the last one up in the hills
- 46:04Speaker 1: of North Carolina, Helen, Helene, You said to me, hey, man,
- 46:10Speaker 1: the church and I are getting together with a couple
- 46:12Speaker 1: of mission groups and we're headed to the hills. What's
- 46:18Speaker 1: the name of the town up there?
- 46:19Speaker 2: We uh so, Spruce Pond and Burnsville, North Carolina were
- 46:24Speaker 2: the hardest hit, Okay, And so we went to we
- 46:26Speaker 2: went to both those towns and at that time and
- 46:30Speaker 2: it still is like this. It's it's not as bad now,
- 46:34Speaker 2: but at that time, a week after the storm, we
- 46:37Speaker 2: didn't have telephone signal, we didn't have reliable electricity, we
- 46:42Speaker 2: didn't have water and uh and so you know, I
- 46:48Speaker 2: would literally when I would find a telephone signal, I
- 46:50Speaker 2: would text my wife and say I am at this location,
- 46:54Speaker 2: and then we would lose it. And when I get
- 46:56Speaker 2: it again, hey, now I'm at this location. Right. So
- 46:59Speaker 2: that way, if something happened to me in the middle
- 47:01Speaker 2: of all the assessing that we needed to do, you know,
- 47:04Speaker 2: she at least had a dot of where I was.
- 47:07Speaker 2: You know what I mean.
- 47:08Speaker 1: You in our friendship, you have always reminded me, no
- 47:16Speaker 1: matter what's happening, to be blessed for even hardship. You
- 47:25Speaker 1: live your life like that. You that's who you are.
- 47:31Speaker 2: You.
- 47:32Speaker 1: You saw things that were unimaginable, not just the power
- 47:37Speaker 1: of what mother nature can do, the power of water,
- 47:41Speaker 1: but you saw homes gone, you saw lives completely shattered,
- 47:47Speaker 1: You saw death.
- 47:49Speaker 2: You saw.
- 47:52Speaker 1: People losing their husbands, losing their wives, losing their family members.
- 47:58Speaker 1: That's I'm guessing gonna stick with you for forever. You've
- 48:03Speaker 1: come home. You came home from that trip a new man, right, So,
- 48:10Speaker 1: you know, my first trip up and you've seen some stuff, man.
- 48:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean my first trip, it was a team
- 48:21Speaker 2: of us pastors. My associate Brian was with me. He's phenomenal,
- 48:26Speaker 2: and they had to we had to. Uh we were
- 48:30Speaker 2: So we were at this elementary school that turned into
- 48:33Speaker 2: a clothing shelter. And when I tell you there was clothing.
- 48:36Speaker 2: There was feet tall of clothing in a gymnasium and
- 48:42Speaker 2: in every classroom and water and all these goods. It
- 48:45Speaker 2: was such incredible to see. But we got a phone
- 48:48Speaker 2: call while we were there that there was a group
- 48:51Speaker 2: of people stuck high up on the mountain and they
- 48:55Speaker 2: needed certain a certain amount of supplies, and all those
- 48:57Speaker 2: supplies were at that school. So we loaded up the
- 48:59Speaker 2: van and took it. They had to plow us in
- 49:05Speaker 2: to where they're located when we got there, which took forever.
- 49:09Speaker 2: When we got there, the State Forester Services. Those jokers
- 49:13Speaker 2: are some bad jokers.
- 49:14Speaker 3: Man.
- 49:14Speaker 2: I'm gonna tall those jokers. They pull up in a
- 49:18Speaker 2: quad and we loaded that thing down, strapped it down.
- 49:23Speaker 2: And when I mean they took off up a mountain, jad,
- 49:25Speaker 2: I'm telling you they there was no road, there's no trail.
- 49:30Speaker 2: They took off up a landslide hill to a family
- 49:34Speaker 2: that we couldn't see, and it was actually a group
- 49:37Speaker 2: of families, and they just took off with it and
- 49:39Speaker 2: they were gonna go as high as they could with
- 49:41Speaker 2: the quad and then hike the rest of it up.
- 49:44Speaker 2: And we're not talking like a few bags of stuff.
- 49:47Speaker 2: I'm talking like a half a vanload, fifteen passenger vanload
- 49:51Speaker 2: full of stuff, and like it like that, like it
- 49:56Speaker 2: just stuck with me, like just like, oh my gosh.
- 49:59Speaker 2: So then we had to like we're blown away by this,
- 50:02Speaker 2: and we leave. We had to get plowed out to
- 50:06Speaker 2: get out of the area to get back to where
- 50:08Speaker 2: we were going. And we so we get stuck. We're stopped.
- 50:12Speaker 2: We're stopped along this makeshift roadway on the river and
- 50:16Speaker 2: we see a search and rescue team this close to
- 50:19Speaker 2: my window and they've got these metal prods and they're
- 50:23Speaker 2: just just poking the ground and and you have to know,
- 50:28Speaker 2: like we I know enough that the dirt along the
- 50:32Speaker 2: river bank that's there now was not there before, and
- 50:36Speaker 2: it's feet high, feet like six seven, eight nine ten
- 50:41Speaker 2: feet high, and they're poking around for bodies and they're
- 50:45Speaker 2: and there's debris and they're They're climbing in and out
- 50:48Speaker 2: of these debris piles looking for bodies, and we know
- 50:52Speaker 2: when they found a body because they would climb out
- 50:55Speaker 2: and they market with a certain mark, and so one
- 50:58Speaker 2: mark meant nothing's there, the other the mark meant something
- 51:01Speaker 2: is there. And so like it just I mean, I've
- 51:06Speaker 2: seen a lot of devastation that was that was next
- 51:10Speaker 2: level just to and we're talking a week two weeks
- 51:14Speaker 2: after the storm. I've been four times. We're sending another
- 51:18Speaker 2: crew up. I won't be able to go on it
- 51:20Speaker 2: at the end of June. I'll probably go one more
- 51:23Speaker 2: time this year, I think, And uh it it there's
- 51:27Speaker 2: there's still even though things are cleaner, they're still finding bodies. Yeah.
- 51:32Speaker 2: So man, it's it's it's it's incredible. You know.
- 51:34Speaker 1: Every Wednesday, and as you just heard, Sweethearts and Heroes
- 51:38Speaker 1: is part of my Wednesday morning program. Here they talk
- 51:45Speaker 1: about hope. Yeah, all the time. I have said to
- 51:49Speaker 1: you countless times that that I my personal feeling is
- 51:56Speaker 1: that hope can be such a a dangerous word in
- 52:03Speaker 1: that we can have all of the hope in the world,
- 52:07Speaker 1: but when nothing is delivered or nothing good results from,
- 52:16Speaker 1: no matter how well we wish or hope for something
- 52:22Speaker 1: that there's a risk that we take. We're vulnerable to disappointment,
- 52:27Speaker 1: to defeat. And how difficult is it to have hope
- 52:33Speaker 1: the next time?
- 52:34Speaker 2: Well, that's because you know not to say this out
- 52:37Speaker 2: of love. Your definition of hope is not accurate. The
- 52:41Speaker 2: definition of hope is the assurance that God keeps us word.
- 52:46Speaker 2: So when we took all those supplies up that mountain,
- 52:50Speaker 2: there's this tiny little church. Every church became a resource
- 52:54Speaker 2: center for the community, every single church, didn't matter what
- 52:57Speaker 2: your size was, who you were, you became aime, a
- 53:00Speaker 2: distribution point of resources. And when we got there a
- 53:05Speaker 2: week after the storm, and they were they were in
- 53:06Speaker 2: max capacity. There was no need for blankets, no need
- 53:09Speaker 2: for clothes, no need the thing they needed gas and fuel.
- 53:12Speaker 2: That was really the biggest thing at that point. A
- 53:14Speaker 2: week after the storm they needed and so but they
- 53:19Speaker 2: they had everything and there was joy that was unspeakable.
- 53:24Speaker 2: And and like you, you had your your telephone service
- 53:30Speaker 2: and internet service is from eight pm at night to
- 53:33Speaker 2: eight am in the morning. Because Starlink sent up free
- 53:37Speaker 2: satellites and in order to accommodate law enforcement first responders,
- 53:42Speaker 2: they had to turn it off to civilian use during
- 53:45Speaker 2: the day. They just think about that. That's how that's
- 53:48Speaker 2: how that worked. And so but but man like they
- 53:52Speaker 2: went from losing everything that now just the community showed
- 53:57Speaker 2: up in such a drastic response. They have everything that
- 54:00Speaker 2: need except for fuel. We had to figure that part out,
- 54:04Speaker 2: and there was just such joy. I mean, the literal
- 54:07Speaker 2: response was from one lady. We talked to you know,
- 54:11Speaker 2: we we never thought we could have it this good.
- 54:15Speaker 2: And I'm like, your homes are gone, like you like,
- 54:20Speaker 2: your relatives are gone and she and she just said, yeah,
- 54:23Speaker 2: but look look at what's around us, like, look at
- 54:26Speaker 2: how the communities and the state and the nation has
- 54:28Speaker 2: responded to us. And and so it As a believer,
- 54:35Speaker 2: we know that that man that happens because God's gonna
- 54:37Speaker 2: keep his word. God's gonna provide for us. God's gonna
- 54:40Speaker 2: care for us. God's gonna meet the need. God's gonna
- 54:43Speaker 2: God's gonna come alongside of us when we're at not
- 54:47Speaker 2: just our highs, but even our deepest lows. God will
- 54:50Speaker 2: provide for all of those needs. And so that that's hope.
- 54:53Speaker 2: Hope is the assurance that God keeps us word. Hope
- 54:56Speaker 2: is not like buying a lottery ticket right where. Hey, man,
- 54:59Speaker 2: I'm I you know, this could be it, bro, this
- 55:03Speaker 2: could be it. This, this opportunity could be life to
- 55:06Speaker 2: That's not hope, JD. Hope is the absolute assurance that
- 55:10Speaker 2: God's going to keep his work.
- 55:12Speaker 3: Wow.
- 55:14Speaker 2: Man, I'm so happy to see you. You know, I
- 55:17Speaker 2: had Mary.
- 55:18Speaker 1: Peterson in here yesterday and shame on me for not
- 55:22Speaker 1: knowing that that you you were connected to Mary Peterson
- 55:27Speaker 1: Woodland Studios and her great husband, and you know, uh,
- 55:33Speaker 1: we were talking about you afterwards and she's like, oh, yeah,
- 55:37Speaker 1: we just had dinner and everything, and I'm like, he's
- 55:41Speaker 1: one of the greatest dudes I've ever met.
- 55:44Speaker 2: He's just he's a.
- 55:45Speaker 1: Pastor, he's a preacher, minister, whatever you want, whatever stamp
- 55:50Speaker 1: you want to put on yourself. But he's also a
- 55:55Speaker 1: regular dude.
- 55:56Speaker 2: Just a regular dude, regular dude.
- 55:58Speaker 1: Hey, I love that about you. And you're you're the
- 56:01Speaker 1: pastor of a huge church.
- 56:02Speaker 2: How many members, Uh, we're we're somewhere, We're somewhere just
- 56:09Speaker 2: north of two hundred, I mean just we It's a
- 56:13Speaker 2: temple Baptist church, a fantastic church in fayetble If you're
- 56:16Speaker 2: driving down I ninety five. We're at exit fifty five. Yeah. Uh,
- 56:20Speaker 2: and you can't miss us. We were we When I
- 56:23Speaker 2: tell you that I'm literally on the interstate, I literally
- 56:26Speaker 2: sit at my office and look out my window and
- 56:28Speaker 2: watch ninety five traffic. Wow, I'm on I ninety five.
- 56:32Speaker 2: We we literally have our own exit. So but uh, yeah, man,
- 56:37Speaker 2: come come see us. We we live about ten miles
- 56:42Speaker 2: off of I ninety five seven ten miles someone in
- 56:44Speaker 2: that ballpark and uh, man, come we we'd love you
- 56:47Speaker 2: to come see this. Man. I love you. Man, I'm
- 56:49Speaker 2: if this is the only chance I get to see
- 56:51Speaker 2: I'm happy with it. This is it.
- 56:53Speaker 1: And you brought me coffee this morning.
- 56:55Speaker 2: Yeah, man, I always look up bros right you.
- 56:58Speaker 1: You brought me a cup a point Oh And I'm
- 57:02Speaker 1: just you know, I wanted to, uh to ask you.
- 57:05Speaker 1: I have a I have a friend and I don't
- 57:07Speaker 1: know if she's listening right now. Who is a helpless,
- 57:11Speaker 1: helpless Starbucks God bless her addict.
- 57:19Speaker 2: Hey, don't hate. It's more than a fan. I'm not hating.
- 57:25Speaker 2: I'm just saying.
- 57:26Speaker 1: I mean, it's like, and I think of you every
- 57:29Speaker 1: time because she's like, I'll drive three hundred and fifty
- 57:32Speaker 1: seven miles for.
- 57:32Speaker 2: A ice uf try.
- 57:39Speaker 1: There's something about you Starbucks people that's not right, buddy.
- 57:44Speaker 2: Well, first of all, no, no, there's no, no, it's
- 57:48Speaker 2: not right. I like the local shops, but they're they're
- 57:52Speaker 2: hit or miss, right, they're they're hit or miss. And
- 57:55Speaker 2: Espresso win on eight oh two coffee are sure like
- 57:58Speaker 2: your you're dead, intend to get good coffee at those places. Yeah,
- 58:02Speaker 2: so I'm not drinking Starbucks when I got the either
- 58:05Speaker 2: one of those two nearby. But wow, but I am
- 58:10Speaker 2: Starbucks over Duncan. I am Starbucks over Dunking. I'm not
- 58:13Speaker 2: gonna lie about it. Like, and the points are better, Like, dude,
- 58:17Speaker 2: you go to Starbucks, you get one point per dollar
- 58:19Speaker 2: that you spend, so like I get a freak up
- 58:21Speaker 2: of coffee like all the time. I love it, you
- 58:24Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. And if you use the gift
- 58:26Speaker 2: card is double points and there's some days there like
- 58:28Speaker 2: hey listen, you can get triple point. So man, why
- 58:30Speaker 2: wouldn't I go to Starbucks? But last time I went
- 58:33Speaker 2: to Starbucks, I had the pumpkin latte whatever, and I
- 58:37Speaker 2: it's it's ten bucks, I will pay ten ten bucks.
- 58:42Speaker 2: I will pay ten bucks over the burnt tire coffee
- 58:45Speaker 2: that you get at Comby's any day. I'm telling you, man,
- 58:48Speaker 2: have you had Combany's coffee like that? I haven't lately.
- 58:51Speaker 2: It is I'm telling you. It's like you went to
- 58:54Speaker 2: uh the Governor's tire collection, licked every tire you know
- 58:58Speaker 2: and to test them. I mean, it's just it's a man,
- 59:00Speaker 2: I'm telling you.
- 59:02Speaker 1: I told I told Mary yesterday. I'm like, she's like,
- 59:07Speaker 1: it's important to humanize the pastors.
- 59:13Speaker 2: She's right, I'm like, human eyes. The guy's got steelers underwear.
- 59:20Speaker 2: Come on, all right, let's talk humanized. We're getting old
- 59:24Speaker 2: j D. Yeah. You know what I did this year?
- 59:27Speaker 2: I had a kolon oscary this year, first one, first one.
- 59:30Speaker 2: Have you ever had one? I have had one, You've
- 59:32Speaker 2: had one, I've had one. It was it was nothing.
- 59:34Speaker 2: It was nothing, really, it really was nothing. Did you
- 59:38Speaker 2: drink the stuff or take the mira?
- 59:40Speaker 1: I drink. I drank the stuff there. I think it's
- 59:43Speaker 1: good to get cleaned out.
- 59:45Speaker 2: Absolutely, come on, you need to get checked out, bro.
- 59:49Speaker 2: But I took the MiraLax route. I took the Miralacs route.
- 59:52Speaker 2: And now there's certain flavors of Gatorade that I can't
- 59:55Speaker 2: drink anymore. I understand what I'm saying. I do you
- 59:57Speaker 2: know what I'm saying, but do listen. I've had a
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: lot of surgeries in my life, a lot of surgeries
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: in my life, and everybody was like, you're gonna take
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: the best nap ever. Yeah. I'm like, okay, and you're
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: gonna jump up and you're gonna be able to conquer
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: the world when you're done. Sure, sure, whatever, and uh
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: And I laid down, man, And they took me in
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: and laid me down, and I could feel them prepping me.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying. I'm not gonna go in detail,
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: but should I'm saying like they're they're getting me ready,
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: of course, and I'm like, hey, you're gonna knock me out,
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: like please knock me out. And lady said, hey, watch this,
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: and she had this syringe and my face went boom.
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: And I woke up and the first thing I said
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: to Becca was, am I pretty? Am? I Am? I pretty? Today?
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: Do I look? You know, dude, I'm telling you, man,
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: I was on another planet. Whatever that stuff they gave me,
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: I was out. I stayed out the whole day. I could.
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: I mean, I was, I mean messed up. I tried
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: coaching basketball that night because I was gonna man up,
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: you know what I mean? Yeah, I was gonna man up.
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: I don't know what I told those kids. I don't
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: even know what I we did. I may have just
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: ran them the whole time. Anything.
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: You don't care if they're going a foot up in there,
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: We're three hundred and fifty feet up in there.
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: No, it doesn't matter. No, it does not matter. I
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: mean what matters is to cleandland health, of course. But
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: I'm just I'm just saying, they knocked you out. They
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: could do whatever they want to with me. Man. They
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: probably inserted some robotic features in me, and I don't
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: turn into tracking system. Yeah, oh yeah, hands down, some
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: secret government thing in me.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: But how was March madness for you? What were you?
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: Are you? House fun? Bro? Huskies have fun on the show.
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: Are you a Huskies fan? What happened? Go well, listen,
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: I'm a realist. Cooper Flag's fun to watch. Had to
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: pull for the New England guy, can't pull for Duke,
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: but my tar heels. I'm so mad, man, I'm so mad.
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: I just want them to let me in that gym
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: with that team for ten minutes. That's all all these
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: timid I'll straighten them out. What would you say? Play
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: your position like you like you for crying out loud.
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: You gotta my boy. Drake Powell is a slasher to
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: the hoop. He does not shoot threes. He can Why
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: are they sticking him beyond the arc to shoot threes?
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: He is a He is a hooper. He is a jumper.
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: Attack the dad gum hole, man, that's what you do. Na.
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: They don't want to do that, man, they don't want
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: and Elliott canot until you learn to control the basketball.
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: Stop playing point guard, like, just stop playing point stop
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: giving the team like there were times he just like
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: he would he would stop at half court and be like, hey,
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: you want the ball? Here you go, Merry Christmas? Like
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: stop it. Control the basketball like anyway, man, I'm telling
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: I'm hot about it. You're you're a you're a basketball coach,
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: you're a football coach? Yes? What am I missing here?
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: I saw all I coached. That's that's what you coach.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: That's all I can still you have for a long
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: time and you're still coaching this.
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: Yes, I might have retired from basketball this year, but
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: I don't know yet. We're gonna see.
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: The NFL schedule just came out, came out, uh a
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: couple of weeks ago, two weeks ago, something something like that.
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: Are you what say you? Are you excited? Are you?
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: I mean, listen, it's it's it's almost June. The NFL
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: season starts tomorrow. Yeah, I'm excited about it.
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: I mean, I'm I wish my Steelers would move away
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: from Aaron Rodgers and let's just settle down and get go,
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: get it. But I don't know why, old man Aaron's
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: got a like why why are we caving to Aaron Rodgers?
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying, Like he like the dog
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: the boy, don't want to be here while we caving
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: to him. Man, he I mean, I know he's got
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: stuff going on, and that's that's man. We pray for you. Well, bro,
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: like make a decision, make a decision, and let's move
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: on to Mason Rudolph and let's like, like let's do
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: something else, like go fight, like go go get Kirk
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: Cousins out of Atlanta because he's miserable down there, and
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: let's let's let's compete Roban not we gotta wait on
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: old man Aaron to come home. I mean taking Jared
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: Tall and you know, put on his anyway.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: I just godly, when you're preaching, and and I've seen
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: you preach before, you're you're you begin right, somewhat semi scripted, right,
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: then you go nuclear.
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: And then you and then you try to come back.
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: I bring it back and bring it back to planet Earth. Right.
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: Have you ever incorporated the Steelers in some capacity into
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: your sermon? It's a message from our Lord God.
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: No, I talk a lot of smack about the Cowboys.
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: I will because listen, man, fallen world, sinful world, you
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: know what I'm saying, Like I gotta I mean, listen,
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: we we as Steelers, found a way to win this
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: year and lose at the same time. The Cowboys can't
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: even figure that part out, like they just lose, right,
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: And so I have to throw the cowboys under the
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: bus all the time. Okay, it's necessary, you know what
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: I'm saying. It's necessary. And I got a lot of
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: cowboy fans in my church. And yeah, but listen, you
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: know what, for some reason, they don't get offended by that.
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: They'll get offended if I talk about Pepsi's better diet
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: coke For some reason, I don't I don't know what that.
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: But cowboys they don't get offended by I.
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: Just I hit them when I pick careful, buddy, you'll
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: get some flat tires in the parking lot. That's probably true.
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: I know we're all over the road. It's I love
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: talking to you, and I love seeing you, and I
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: love you just as a person so so much. You
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: told me years ago you've lost how many pounds?
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: I lost one hundred and eighty. I think it was
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: one hundred and eighty. I've gained back fifty and about
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: thirty of that's muscle. When I got North Carolina, my
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: doctor took a look at me and she said, I mean,
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: you've lost too much muscle mass. And with my arthritis
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: and my spine and stuff, she's like, you, you have
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: to build muscles. So so over the last three years
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: that's been my goal, is increasing my amount of protein
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: and building muscles. So three days a week I combine
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: cardio and push pull resistant band regimen, and then two
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: days a week I just do cardio and then I
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: rest the other two days a week, and I'm somewhere
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: in at eighteen one hundred and two thousand calorie range
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: every day. But I can't, like I'm you know, the
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: hard part is when you when you increase that amount
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: of protein in tone and your your your physical yeah,
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: five six days a week, like really physical, then you're
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: always hungry, like always hungry. So and then things get
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: kind of out of balance. Your sugars kind of get
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: messed up. So I had to my sugars got a
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: little bit out about out of balance. I've got to
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: get I'm working on getting that stuff under control.
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: That's remarkable. One hundred and eighty pounds.
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: Yeah, yep, Yeah, I'm working on the guns, baby, I'm working.
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: Let me see the guns. I'm working hard on the
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: KD I'm working. Yeah, you know what I'm saying, Wow, working,
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: Look at yeah right, it's all this excess skin right
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: here that I can't get rid of. Yeah, me too,
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: I have the same problem. What are you laughing about.
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: We're in the same boat, bro, We're in the same bro.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: So you you said to me, when I lose all
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: this weight, I want to climb camel some with you.
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: What's going on, dude? Why haven't we climbed camel? Because
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: I'll tell you why, because I did a probably why.
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: I did a seventy two hour endurance challenge in the
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: mountains of North Carolina and it almost killed me. Matter
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: of fact, the same my same doctor. When I came back,
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: I had two vernacle what she called pre hernias, and
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: my knees are shot and I can't. I had to
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: come back because I couldn't get well. And and uh,
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: what was that organization again? It's four M, Yes, it's
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: four M. And that's called the Extreme Character Challenge. I
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: took a group of guys and the hardest thing you've
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: ever done, Oh my gosh, hands down. So I have
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: Fable is the home of Fort brag the largest military
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: installation of the world and largest army base in the world.
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: And so I've got a lot of military guys in
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: my church, and one of them is a colonel. And
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: all I will say to you is, at one point
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: in the night, in the wee hours of the morning,
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: I lost control of my anger because I just wanted
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: to sleep. That's all I want to do. Is I
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: want was a nap. That's all I wanted. And so
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: we had these certain break moments where we had these
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: speakers and it was somewhere above two am, and I
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: lost my anger on somebody and they laid me down
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: next to my buddy John, Colonel Woodruff, and he leaned
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: over to me and he said, I just want you
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: to know that this is this is the equivalent of
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: three days of Ranger school. And he said, and you're
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: doing You're doing pretty good. And and I'm like, that
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: says a lot, bro, Yeah, that says a lot. Yeah.
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: And he's like, now, I'm not saying you would finish
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: Ranger school, but you're in the thick. But I'll take it, bro,
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: I'll take it. Why I finished it, man, not it
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: wasn't pretty. I've learned. I learned this lesson faithfulness and
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: finishing doesn't always is always pretty. So wow, it wasn't
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: It wasn't pretty, but I did it. So and uh,
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: if I go back, I'm going back to help and
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: not do it again. Amazing. That was that was hard. Listen.
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: We we we chat on the phone, we text. Uh.
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: We can go.
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: Months yep without without talking or chatting, and when we do.
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: Just pick back up. Bang, Hey, I got a question
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: for you. And here we are. It's like we're catching up,
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: live on the air, live on the air. Why not?
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: You know what I said? Here, We're like, we're trying
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: to find some time, and I was like, let's just
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: do it on the air. Yes, that's the fun. I
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: got a question for you, please. Lily's eleven, Lily's ten
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: years old. Ten boys are becoming a factor, they are. Okay,
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: can what's your plan? Can we can we hold hands
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: and pray about this? I have a better solution for you,
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: But I just want to know what is your plan?
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: I mean, I'm yeah, well, of course we're gonna pray, pray,
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: prayers the thing. But I just want to that's just
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: my plan. That's your plan right here? Okay.
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: I don't have the camera on me on purpose, Okay,
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: because I don't want Meta and Mark Zuckerberg to shut
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: me down.
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: Okay, that's my plan right there. I might fill up
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: your comment section right now, okay, please? All right? So
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: this how old I am. I was at a funeral
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: and ran into my college crew, right, Okay, that's how
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: old I am. We go to funerals to see friends. Yeah,
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: And I was asking my buddy Mitchell, I said, Mitchell
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: who he lives in west North Carolina and very rural area.
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: I said, Mitchell, your daughter's fifteen. She's got a boyfriend. Yep,
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: Lord Helpin, yeah right, I said, so what do you do? Like,
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: how do you how do you deal with all these boys?
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: He said, Chris, I got this for you. He showed
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: me his picture on his phone, and it's a picture
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: of his daughter holding up the pieces of a castrated cow.
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: Beautiful yep. And he says, I literally shout this to
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: every boy, the cousins. I don't care if they're friends.
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: I don't care if I don't care that cloud don't care.
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: Every boy sees his picture and they all understand exactly
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: what's going on. And I think that's what you do.
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: You take her to some dairy farm or some ca
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: and you you let him like teach her how to
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: castraight a cat. Why doesn't he have that framed or
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: does he have that framed? I don't know. It's on
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: his phone though, and it's it's easily accessible. I can
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: tell you that much.
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: I understand the phone should be above the man. Yeah,
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: for real, that's I'll tell him. I'll tell Mitchell he's
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: got a I have a friend who has a billion chickens,
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: uh meat meat birds, and you know he processes, he
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: slaughters them and everything. And he's got the the black
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: rubber apron yeah, uh, and the and the the the
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: meat cleavers and and all that stuff. And he's you know,
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: he's pretty spattered up. He's like, I'll just come over
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: the house. I'll just have a little bit spattered here
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: that is, and I'll just come over the house. And
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: I said, will you walk in with the cleaver in
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: your hand with fresh blood on it? Yes, absolutely, of
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: course I will. And I said, can we say that
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: you just got out of the penitentiary and he said, yeah,
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: you could say that too, and that you're my uncle
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: Bill and you've got some mental health issues and whatever. Yes, listen,
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: I'll be the first person to admit. Yeah, yeah, I'm scared.
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: I only have one little girl is ten, and I'm scared.
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: I'm not scared about She's gonna make good decisions.
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: She's good. Oh yeah, but the other guy. And she's
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: already got this this friend. Do you know his name?
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: I'm not gona talk about it. I'm not gonna say
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: his name. Carson whoops. But you know, this is this
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: is this is this is a moment in my life
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: where I'm and I've got friends who are older than me,
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: and there's and they've got kids in their late teens
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: in the early twenties, and they're like Brouck Cole.
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: So I was hoping to see Lily and remind her
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: of what I told her before we left, and that
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: is that if a boy or man is her you,
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: that there's three places that you need to hit. Nuts, knees,
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: and throat. Wow, yeah, nuts. I tell every young lady
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: that that's coming from a pastor. Listen, that's beautiful. Listen,
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: I'm just telling you right now self defense. Listen, Ring
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: wrex In here, right, I'll tell him the same thing.
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: He needs to add that to his curriculum. I'm just saying, like, like, listen,
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: inside outside, the knees, right, you'll debilitate them to hit
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: the ground. They're not go chase you at that point,
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: right sure. And if they stood, they get up from that,
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: they're gonna be real slow, right right, And of course
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: the nuts, right, that's gonna do. And and listen the throat,
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: like they're not gonna be able to say anything. They're
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: gasping for air. I'm just I'm telling you this is
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: what I tell young ladies. This is you know, and
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: then and then and it run and like running your help,
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: run and find your crazy uncle. Who's with the meat cleaver?
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: Is I love you so much? You can't tell her?
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: Chris said, did that you handle a boy who's getting
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: abusive to you? This is what you do?
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: Oh man, dude, she's you know, uh. The other day
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: and I've already talked about this on the air once.
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: But the other day she had she we had a
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: blue jay that got stuck in the chicken coop and
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: she went in there and rescued this blue jay. I mean,
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: how many of us get to hold the blue jay?
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: And she's holding this blue jay and just love and
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: up on this thing, and it's closing its eyes and
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: they're all they're having their moment. Very late for school, huh.
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: And she's like, dad, you know I can't we gotta
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: go to school. I'm really late. I'm like, screw it, man, Yeah,
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: just save for this moment. And she did for the
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: longest time. Yea, look at this bird up close. This
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: is and this is nature. This is a gift from God.
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: This is an opportunity that we're not passing this care
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: for late school.
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: She's not going to learn that in classroom, she's not
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: gonna learn. That's why we homeschool kids. Man, good man,
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: you got I mean you can't pass up those kinds
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: of experiences. And that's an education of itself. Sure you
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. Another experience. Uh and I thought
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: of you. Uh literally, I'm not making this up. Yeah,
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: two days ago mowing because we haven't had a chance
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: to mow hear In fromont for the last six years
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: because of the rain. Mowing. What do you think happened
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: to me? She found a snake? You bet? What'd you do?
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: Came out right, almost ran over. It went in front
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: of the going going well, because God created this beautiful creature.
- 1:16:48Speaker 2: Snakes are meant to die. That they that's why they live.
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: They lived to get killed. Say, there's no good reason
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: they kill, Mike, So so do cats like keep get
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: a cat? Yeah right, but there's no good Come on,
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: what's good?
- 1:17:04Speaker 3: Of?
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: What's good?
- 1:17:05Speaker 3: Yes?
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: Blow them up? I have said I have treated like
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: the gopher. Well, so I.
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: Scream like a girl, Uh to Sherlyn to help me.
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: If she did not, because listen, it's at this point
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: in the in the head, it's kill or be killed.
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: So she comes running out of the house because I'm
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: screaming hysterically. It was about maybe a foot long garter snake,
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: doesn't matter if it's a garter, uh moccasin, the cotton
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: mouth or whatever they're called it. Yeah, she comes running
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: out and grabs it and picks it up, and it's
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: up around the neck and it's coiled all around her arm.
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, nope, nope, nope.
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: And I'm like, you know, she shaved me, she saved
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: my life. But I'm like, man, it's like Autrey's got
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: to hear about this.
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: Listen, let me let me tell you one. So last summer,
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: Sam was at the church with me, and there was
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: his buddy, Charlie was there. Charlie's mom is one of
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: our admins at church, and so we're all there and
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: these birds had built this nest on like the front
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: of the church and we have these little nest protectors
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: and still they built it. I don't know what they did. Well,
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: these two little baby birds fell out and they come
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: running in the office with these two baby birds and
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: they're just squealing. And so Charlie's mom gets a box
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: and makes a little thing out of it, and she's like,
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: I don't. I don't know what to do. I said,
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: I don't know what to do either, and so I said, well,
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: let me let me take them and I'll go to
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: the Foresty Service was right behind our church, So let
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: me go to the Forestry office. Drove over there and
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: they looked at it, and I walked in and I said,
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: I got these birds. They fell out. I can't get
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: him back up there. What do I do with them?
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: And dude, they looked at me like I was an idiot.
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: I'm like, they were like, just let him die, like,
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: go put them in the woods, let a snake eat them.
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: And I'm like, I'm not letting these birds die with it.
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: I Am not giving a snake a free meal. You
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: are the United States Forestry Service? What are you talking about?
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: So then I there was a little nature center in Fayetteville,
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: So I drove over there, walked in. There's there's a
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: school group there, tons of kids. And this got me
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: and was like, what do you got? Just got these
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: two birds they fell out of the nest, their baby birds.
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: What do I do with them? And in front of
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: all these kids and their parents, he goes, you just
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: stick him in the woods and let him die like
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: that's just how life works. You just you just let
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: them die. That was the wrong thing to say, because
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: every mama and kid in that building swarmed him. You
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: could have let these birds die, like he had to
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: take me to a back office and to get I mean,
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: they were I thought they were gonna hurt him, you
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: know what I mean. He took the birds and he
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: covered them up and they rested whatever, and we left
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: him there, and I'm sure he took him in the
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: woods to let him die. But I'm gonna tell you something.
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: There was a moment there I thought these mamas were
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: gonna come out and like they were gonna put him
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: out in the woods with the snakes and let him die. Yeah,
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: but yeah, you know what I mean, the Vermona inside
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: of me was like, we're not letting the birds die.
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: What are you doing? What have you done?
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: Since you've you've only been in Vermont a couple of days?
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: What who have you seen? What have you done? Where
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: have you gone? Where have you eaten? Tell me about it.
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: You're leaving tomorrow to go back to North Carolina.
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: Yeah, we're going to see our friends in Pittsburgh tomorrow.
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: Sam wants to go by Penn State and he wants
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: to go see Penn State. So we're gonna we're gonna
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: squeeze by there. Man. Right now, they're eating at the wayside.
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: We've been expresso twice. You have to go to the
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: melt down. We love Diane. Yeah, I have to go
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: to the melt down, of course. And I'll tell you
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: a really cool story. When I had gastick bypass uh,
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: I forget if it's three or four weeks, whatever it is.
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: I was on an all liquid diet and that can
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: only have a little bit of liquid, and there's nowhere
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: in Vermont to eat like that. And my friends, I
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: had some friends coming to town. They wanted to go
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: out to eat, so we took them to the melt down.
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: And my plan was just to sit there and sip water.
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: That was literally the plan. And Diane went and got
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: me just the broth of one of her soups and
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: brought me yeah and so, and then then every week
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: after that, like she would you know, Becca would notifi
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: or she'd call back or whatever, Hey come by and
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: get some broth for it. Like she would make I mean,
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: she was just fantastic. So we're friends with Diana. So
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: we have to go to melt down and man, listen,
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: I love going to Cabot and grazing the cheese table.
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: It's different now though they don't have all the cheese. What.
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: I don't know what that's about. But we Cabot and uh,
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: Lake Champlain chocolate. I have to go get the champagne
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: truffle dark chocolate, cold hollow. I did sip a little
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: bit apple ciderm it was so good. Yeah, it was
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: so good. Today we're having lunch. I have to go
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: to Lake Champlain. Is if I if I move back
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: to Vermont, I am praying God would let me live
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: on Lake Champlain. You love Champlain, I love it. Yeah.
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: So we're going Lake Champlain for lunch and then we're
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: having dinner with some friends. Tonight went and saw some ballgames. Man,
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: all these kids, like coach, they're growing. Yeah, godly, they're
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: growing deep voices, and they're taller than me.
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: Speaking of tall, how tall is Sam now? Because Mary
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: was saying he's like ten, he's like five ten. I
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: think he's growing in the last week. I think he's
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: he's like five to ten.
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: He is he I know he I'm five ten, So
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: he's just a little taller than me. How old is he?
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: He's fifteen and he's taller than you. Yeah, oh yeah, dude,
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: he be size fifteen shoe. He's gonna shoot up. Man,
- 1:22:59Speaker 2: what what she playing? He's doing hoop right? Basketball? Football,
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: and he's throwing shot put, running on the hundred meter dash.
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: He uh wow. He started last year on varsity at
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: right guard, d end and center, and he we rotated
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: him in and out a lot. Last year was a
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: hard year for football for everybody but he and then
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: he moved over to power forward for me because I
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: got some taller kids and who can jump a bit
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: higher than him. But Sam's a good body. He can
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: power to the whole. So he had a really good
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: year in basketball, really good year in basketball. But so
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: so I have to ask you, he's fifteen. Girlfriend. Man,
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: that's a sensitive subject around our house. Bro, it's just
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: right behind you. It aired out. I'm not saying I
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: won't talk about it. But the boy listen, man, dating
- 1:23:58Speaker 2: now is much different than it was and we were
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: his age. It's all like text message now. They don't
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: talk on the phone, they don't you know, everything's a message. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: I mean it's it is weird. And and now there's
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: these things that kids are doing where like you don't
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: ask a girl for a phone number, your friend gets
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: her number for you and you never and like she
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: does the same. It's so weird. Sure, it's weird underground,
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: you know what I mean. And so it's a sensitive subject.
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: He I mean, you know, and now like girls will
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: will you know, girls will like you and not tell
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: you that, and then when it when it gets disclosed,
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: they don't like you, and and and like and boys
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: at the same time, or you know, they'll like a
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: girl and they'll they'll tell the girl and then like
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: the next day they don't like the girl, they move on.
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: And it like we're trying to be like, Looksten, man,
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: you date one girl at a time. Oh yeah, you don't.
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: You don't date multiple worlds at a time. You chase
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: after her heart, right, You're not chasing after her body.
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: You're chasing after her heart. And you you know, and
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: and and you allow the Lord to work in all
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: of that. And but man, I mean, do we have
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: a home landline that never gets we don't make calls
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: on and I and and and some I'm like Sam
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: has a cell phone, but it's it's under it's it's uh,
- 1:25:27Speaker 2: it's it's kind of locked up right now. I'm like,
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: give the give the give the girl the home number.
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: Not Dad, I'm not, Well, that's not what we do.
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: That's not what we do.
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: No, I don't get it when you stay locked up.
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: Are you're talking about like in a safe Oh yeah
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: all right, yeah yeah.
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: Yeah, we're learning responsibility. Man, you gotta be If you've
- 1:25:43Speaker 2: got a cell phone, you gotta responsible with it. Ah,
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: you gotta be responsible with it. Do you know what?
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: The you know what? You know what? It's helped out
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: the most on vacation is that I only use this
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: phone for certain things. I like, I leave in the car. Yeah.
- 1:25:56Speaker 2: The only reason I have it now is so Becca
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: can come back and pick me up. Know where I'm at,
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: Like I don't. Yeah, if I could, I would listen.
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: We had the SBI show up at our church to
- 1:26:06Speaker 2: do a seminar on cyber safety and all that stuff
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: like sex, traffick and stuff. When they got done, JD,
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: I kid you not. I turned around and looked at everybody,
- 1:26:16Speaker 2: including my buddy who's the colonel, and we all said, hey, listen, Chris,
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: do you know of a remote island in Vermont that
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: we can all move to where there's no electricity and
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: there's no nothing, and we can just ditch the cell
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: phones and start a commune. And I'm like, yes, that's
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: exactly what we all want to do. I'm like, dude, man,
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: people crazy in this world. Jd They crazy, And I'm
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: not done with all the craziness. Man, like hacking in
- 1:26:39Speaker 2: the cameras on your phone and take like, oh my gosh, yeah,
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: oh my god, I mean snapchats the devil. Don't get
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: off of snap.
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: I know, man, you know it's like I Lily's got
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: the damn tablet going all the time now, and we
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: don't know what we're if we're looking at something that's
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: AI generated, if it's real, or if it's not real. Dude, dude,
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: for real, I'm Lily, that's not real. Yeah what do
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: you mean, dad? What do you mean real? What is real?
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: What's real?
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: So this is how crazy things are. If you go
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: to see almost scare you. Now, this is straight from
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: the State Bureau of Investigation in North Carolina. You're scaring
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: me in those shorts. Let's say you go, hey, man,
- 1:27:25Speaker 2: when you got the legs anyway. Let's say you go
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: to Boulder Beach and you guys are playing, having a
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: good time, picnicking, swimming, whatever, and somebody takes a picture
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: of their own kid and you're in the background. Right,
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: They're not trying to take a picture of you, but
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: you're you're in the background. Yeah, they post it on
- 1:27:44Speaker 2: social media. Anybody can anybody who sees that picture can
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: cut you out of it and then present you in
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: a way that right, And they will exploit you without
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: you known about it, And they can exploit you sexually.
- 1:28:02Speaker 2: They can exploit you. They can I mean, they could
- 1:28:05Speaker 2: do whatever they want to that picture. And there's not
- 1:28:08Speaker 2: one thing you can do about it. Yeah, not one thing.
- 1:28:11Speaker 2: If they reached out to you and and you know,
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: try to, uh what is it, ask for money and
- 1:28:18Speaker 2: whatever you literally it's it's so prevalent that the state
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: of your investigation is like we have to go, Yeah,
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: a case like that's not as important as this case
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: over here. So we have to let that just be.
- 1:28:30Speaker 2: And they can't. There's nothing you can do, man, nothing.
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: I want to I want to close out this morning
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: by asking you a question, yeah that I haven't had
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: a chance to ask you looking into the camera, what
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: would you say to Brandon Carbo you got a chance
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: to see him? Sit down with me? Right, there's the
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: Brandon is a uh for those of you that that
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: don't know, is a local guy who's been in a
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: lot of trouble. There's there's a lot of drug use,
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: There's a lot of misdirection in his life, and he
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: is has been described as a as a real nuisance,
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: a real problem in our community. He's not the only one,
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: but a lost soul who's consistently making some really bad decisions,
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: not well liked. Business owners in town are fed up with.
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: And not just Brandon and then the panhandling and whatnot,
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: but but others as well. We have a problem here
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: in our little granite city, but there's problems everywhere in
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: every city, in every town. You've got him down there
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: in fan pil What say to this guy? Did you
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: get a chance to see that interview?
- 1:30:03Speaker 2: I did watch the interview, and I was really disappointed
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: in some of the comments in the comments section, because
- 1:30:10Speaker 2: I think there's a lot of people who lacked understanding compassion.
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: I think what you did was phenomenal to at least
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: give us an inside picture of why this person is
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: in the situation that he's in and why he is
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: the way he is. And I would if I could
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: broad stroke it like I'm watching people walk by. Right
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: when I walked in, I literally saw three people like
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: showing off their ankle bracelets, their ankle detectors and laughing
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: about it. So it's not just Brandon Carbo. I would say,
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: you are making a decision to allow rough, hard circumstances
- 1:30:50Speaker 2: in your life to find the steps you take right now,
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: and it's your decision, Like, it's not, we're not choosing
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: it for you. It's painful that you've had the loss
- 1:31:00Speaker 2: that you've had. It's painful that you are struggling with
- 1:31:04Speaker 2: the things that you're struggling with right now, and that
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: you've got family who is wrestling with things, and maybe
- 1:31:09Speaker 2: you're having to take responsibility for like all of that.
- 1:31:13Speaker 2: But you are choosing to let that define you and
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: who you are right now, And what you need to
- 1:31:20Speaker 2: be doing is making a completely different choice. You need
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: to understand that you are not defined by the circumstances
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: you're in, or even the addictions you have or the
- 1:31:30Speaker 2: hardships you're you've gone through. You are defined as being
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: God's child first and foremost, you are blessed, adopted by
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: Jesus Christ, saved and redeemed and loved and cared for
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: and been given grace and mercy. You when you put
- 1:31:45Speaker 2: your faith in Christ, he takes you from what who
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: is dead, to now alive. This is a This is
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: Ephesians chapter two the Bible. Like you need to understand
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: your identity and in our whole community's identity is not
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: found and your circumstances are who you want to be.
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: It's defined by who God made you to be and
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: how God made you and his redemptive, his redemption for you.
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: So you know, it pains me to see It pains
- 1:32:16Speaker 2: me not only to see that this kind of lifestyle celebrated,
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: but it's also tolerated even by our legal system. It
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: pains me to see that that that now we just
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: kind of settled into the rhythm of this is who
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: we are, and that's not who you are, who you
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: meant to be. And guys like Brandon Carbo can live
- 1:32:38Speaker 2: a life that's totally worthy of goodness and strength and wisdom.
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: His life could totally be redeemed. I think that there
- 1:32:48Speaker 2: needs to be compassion, but also thinks that things there
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: needs to be a strong law and there needs to
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: be some kind of strength from the legal sys, not
- 1:33:00Speaker 2: just law enforcement, but from the court system, from the
- 1:33:02Speaker 2: state house, from who makes the laws. There needs to
- 1:33:06Speaker 2: be some strong effort to curb and change the culture
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: that is really hindering and hurting a community. At the
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: exact same time, we need to have compassion to look
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: at somebody who's been to the situation and help them
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: walk out of it. At the end of the day,
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: it's Brandon Carbo and and and everybody who's in his boat.
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: It's their choice. It's it's not like you've got to
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: choose to take those steps out and you have to
- 1:33:34Speaker 2: want it. You have to want it badly.
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: You have to you have to want sobriety badly enough
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: to be able to get on the road.
- 1:33:42Speaker 2: Yeah, and even.
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: If you fall off the road, you you've got to
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: want it badly enough to get back on it. And
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: we as a society are are almost for lack of
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: a better term, forced to tolerate.
- 1:34:00Speaker 2: Yeah. I think that, you know, I have a lot
- 1:34:07Speaker 2: of compassion for those guys who are making the effort
- 1:34:10Speaker 2: in struggling to take steps out of old lifestyles and
- 1:34:15Speaker 2: old sins. I think that that is what a community
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: like us, uh, like those like us in the community,
- 1:34:23Speaker 2: that's what we need to have, you know what I mean.
- 1:34:26Speaker 2: I don't think we have that, and and and and
- 1:34:29Speaker 2: let me say there's some of that's understandable when you've
- 1:34:31Speaker 2: got an habitual offender that's continued to like, it's hard
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: to give forgiveness to an habitual defender. It just is
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: say what you want, right And and I'm not going
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: to fault somebody who's struggling in that, and that's have
