- 0:13If you have ever pressed submit on an online job portal, like,
- 0:18late at night and then just stared at the screen wondering if a real human being is
- 0:22ever going to read it, you are, uh, you are definitely not imagining things.
- 0:29Oh, man.
- 0:30I, I, I spent months doing that back after my early morning radio show got canceled.
- 0:35It is a total black hole.
- 0:38You just fire resumes into the void and hope.
- 0:41Well, the reality is that over 75 percent of online resumes get filtered out by
- 0:47automated screening software before a hiring manager ever even sees them.
- 0:52Three weeks of waiting, just to get a automated rejection email at two in the
- 0:56morning.
- 0:58But there is a way to skip that entire line in Oklahoma City this month.
- 1:03Wait, skipping three weeks of waiting?
- 1:06How?
- 1:07The Oklahoma Employment Security Commission, or OESC, is hosting a direct hiring
- 1:13event.
- 1:14You can check out an upcoming hiring event or career fair near you to learn about
- 1:18career opportunities, and this specific one is with Walmart in Oklahoma City on
- 1:24Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
- 1:26It runs from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
- 1:29August 19, okay.
- 1:31And what, what kind of jobs are we talking about here?
- 1:33These are store logistics and fulfillment positions.
- 1:37And the pay scale is sitting right at $16.50 to $18.50 per hour.
- 1:44But the real headline here isn't just the hourly rate, Miles,
- 1:48it is the fact that these OESC events guarantee face to face interviews on the spot.
- 1:55You walk in with your paper, you talk to a decision maker right there.
- 2:00Man, walking out with an actual confirmed orientation date instead of checking an
- 2:06inbox fifty times a day, that is a huge weight off your shoulders,
- 2:11especially if you are renting right now in OKC and trying to keep up with bills.
- 2:17It changes the entire dynamic.
- 2:19But you do need a game plan if you are going to go on August 19.
- 2:24First, print out three physical copies of a clean, simplified one page resume.
- 2:31Do not make it complicated.
- 2:33Right, keep it simple.
- 2:35And what else do they need in hand?
- 2:37You need a valid photo ID and your actual Social Security card.
- 2:42Bring those with you.
- 2:43And show up at 10:00 AM sharp to get one of those early interview slots before the
- 2:47crowd builds up.
- 2:49So $16.50 to $18.50 an hour is a solid immediate baseline to get rent
- 2:55covered.
- 2:56But, uh, what happens when someone wants to break past that twenty dollar ceiling?
- 3:01Like, long term?
- 3:03That is where targeted technical training comes in.
- 3:07To move from that $16 range into $22 to $28 per hour, you usually need a
- 3:13specific skill credential.
- 3:15And Metro Tech here in OKC has adult certificate programs specifically for this at
- 3:21their Springlake Campus, over on 1900 Springlake Drive.
- 3:25Springlake Drive, okay.
- 3:27What kind of trades or fields are they teaching over there?
- 3:31They have adult programs for HVAC slash R technicians, structural welders,
- 3:36and medical office specialists.
- 3:38These are local high demand industries where employers are practically fighting over
- 3:43certified people.
- 3:45Okay, but, I mean, I can already hear people listening right now thinking,
- 3:49Claire, school costs money.
- 3:51I am working full time, I cannot afford thousands of dollars in tuition right now.
- 3:56And that is the part that catches almost everyone by surprise.
- 4:01Most adult learners do not pay out of pocket for these.
- 4:05Grants from the Central Oklahoma Workforce Innovation Board,
- 4:08known as COWIB, along with OESC workforce funding, frequently cover 100 percent of
- 4:15the program costs for qualified adults.
- 4:18Wait, 100 percent?
- 4:21Zero student debt?
- 4:23Zero out of pocket tuition for people who qualify.
- 4:27The state and workforce boards are actively funding these because the local economy
- 4:32desperately needs skilled technicians.
- 4:35Okay, okay, but let us talk about time.
- 4:38Because money is one barrier, but if you work a shift job or have kids,
- 4:43how do you actually show up to class?
- 4:46It is real friction, absolutely.
- 4:49These adult tracks are built for working schedules, running evening classes from
- 4:546:00 PM to 9:30 PM, two to three nights a week.
- 4:58And many of them are 12 week accelerated tracks.
- 5:02So twelve weeks of tight scheduling, juggling evening childcare or dinner,
- 5:08but on the other side of those three months, you jump from sixteen bucks an hour to
- 5:13maybe twenty four or twenty eight dollars an hour.
- 5:16That is a life changing trade off.
- 5:19It really is.
- 5:21And if you want to see if you qualify for that 100 percent grant funding before the
- 5:26upcoming enrollment deadline, there is one concrete step you can take today before
- 5:315:00 PM.
- 5:32What is the number?
- 5:34Call the Metro Tech financial aid office directly at 405 424 8324,
- 5:41or drop into a local OESC workforce center to ask specifically about COWIB grant
- 5:47eligibility.
- 5:48One phone call could literally rewrite your income for the next decade.
- 5:53405 424 8324.
- 5:58That is worth ten minutes on your lunch break today.
- 6:01Good stuff, Claire.
- 6:02Talk soon.
