- 0:01Speaker 1: It's The Happy Family's podcast. Very Christmas, You're Fealthy Animal
- 0:12Speaker 1: and the Oscar goes too Oh my god, seeing it here,
- 0:21Speaker 1: I know him.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Well.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Christmas is just around the corner.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Have you noticed, Kylie, there's this switch between where in
- 0:28Speaker 2: one breath we're relaxed, and then the next breath we're stressed,
- 0:31Speaker 2: like we're trying to slow things down because everyone's going
- 0:34Speaker 2: on holidays, but there's so much to do.
- 0:36Speaker 1: There's so much going on.
- 0:37Speaker 3: I just want to slow down. I'm not doing anything.
- 0:41Speaker 3: I'm just hoping the kids are all going to catch
- 0:43Speaker 3: up with me.
- 0:44Speaker 2: There's a favorite quote, min Yeah, that's right. There's a
- 0:47Speaker 2: favorite quote of mind that it's particularly pertinent at this
- 0:51Speaker 2: point of the year when your kids are in your arms,
- 0:54Speaker 2: they can't possibly be underfoot, because a lot of parents
- 0:57Speaker 2: at the moment saying other kids is just under my
- 0:58Speaker 2: feet all the time, and I'm trying to get stuff
- 1:00Speaker 2: and they're sitting around staring at screens and doing nothing.
- 1:02Speaker 2: We have got some solutions, by the way, I'm justin
- 1:05Speaker 2: your kilie, parents of six kids. Happy families dot com
- 1:08Speaker 2: dot you, the Happy Families podcast is bringing you some
- 1:11Speaker 2: solutions for Christmas.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Joy Christmas Bliss.
- 1:15Speaker 2: I know that not everybody wants their kids to be
- 1:17Speaker 2: watching screens all the time, but the reality is sometimes
- 1:20Speaker 2: you kind of just have to right just to get
- 1:23Speaker 2: through and keep saying.
- 1:25Speaker 3: So we've compiled, well, how do you get the presents
- 1:28Speaker 3: wrapped if they're not staring at a screen?
- 1:30Speaker 1: You know, you got to stay up late and then
- 1:32Speaker 1: you're tied the next day and cranky.
- 1:34Speaker 2: So we have compiled a list of our top I
- 1:38Speaker 2: was going to say top five, but there's no way
- 1:39Speaker 2: we're going to. Last time we talked favorite movies, we
- 1:42Speaker 2: ended up having like Poor Od Jr.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Our producer.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Instead of doing our top five movies for whatever it was,
- 1:47Speaker 2: we ended up doing like thirty. So supposedly this is
- 1:51Speaker 2: going to be our top five Christmas movies for the kids,
- 1:53Speaker 2: although I think we're going to veer into some adult
- 1:55Speaker 2: ones as well, to help your family to have a
- 1:58Speaker 2: happy Christmas, but also so that you can some peace
- 2:00Speaker 2: and quiet. The kids can be watching Christmas, everyone can
- 2:02Speaker 2: be getting into the spirit of Christmas. Christmas music can
- 2:05Speaker 2: be on. That's where we're going today. Everyone can be
- 2:11Speaker 2: baking gingerbread.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Hell, everyone, are you going to bake ginger bread?
- 2:16Speaker 2: I was going to say, how unrealistic is what I
- 2:18Speaker 2: just said. I've gone for the nostalgia, the romanticized version
- 2:20Speaker 2: of what's happening. Truth is, nobody's going to be doing
- 2:23Speaker 2: any of that sort of stuff except for the one,
- 2:25Speaker 2: poor soul.
- 2:26Speaker 3: We've only just got the Christmas tree up for goodness
- 2:28Speaker 3: to day it's decorated.
- 2:30Speaker 2: There's literally a green Christmas tree sitting in the corner
- 2:33Speaker 2: with no decoration.
- 2:34Speaker 1: What's surrounded by all my green plants. It actually doesn't
- 2:36Speaker 1: look too bad naked. Yeah, I nearly said something I
- 2:39Speaker 1: shouldn't have said.
- 2:41Speaker 2: So let's talk about Christmas movies before we g rated one,
- 2:46Speaker 2: before we get to sidetracked with all that sort of stuff. Kylie,
- 2:49Speaker 2: if you were to pick your all time favorite family
- 2:51Speaker 2: Christmas movie, what would it be?
- 2:53Speaker 3: I would have, once upon a time said the Polar Express.
- 2:57Speaker 1: I'm wishing on a stern. Well you're coming.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Where?
- 3:05Speaker 1: Why? Through the North Pole? Of course? This is the
- 3:08Speaker 1: whole Express. Yeah, we used to love that film.
- 3:11Speaker 3: But last year, when we watched a movie a night
- 3:15Speaker 3: for each day leading up to Christmas, we got introduced
- 3:19Speaker 3: to so many new movies and I now have a few.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Favorites by the way, just before you talk about your favorites,
- 3:25Speaker 2: I think it's worth highlighting that we took on more
- 3:27Speaker 2: than we could handle by saying let's watch one Christmas
- 3:30Speaker 2: movie each day with the kids or each night. That
- 3:33Speaker 2: was exhausting. I couldn't stand it. It was just too
- 3:36Speaker 2: much TV and too many things to do. Anyway, we
- 3:38Speaker 2: did it, and now you've got a whole new list
- 3:40Speaker 2: of favorites.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Well, and we can thank our staff for that because
- 3:44Speaker 3: they actually introduced us to a couple that have now
- 3:47Speaker 3: become literally my top three.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Okay, so number one, I'm gonna say Klaus. Mister Klaus,
- 3:53Speaker 1: you have a gift you were meant from making toys.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Oh yeah, okay, so that's an Netflix special.
- 4:02Speaker 3: You know the background behind Klaus. Wise, but because it
- 4:05Speaker 3: was such an untraditional story, DreamWorks and Disney wouldn't pick it.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Up, right, So for Netflix, good, Netflix got an unlimited budget.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Let's do whatever we want.
- 4:15Speaker 3: And I just love the take on the Christmas story
- 4:18Speaker 3: that this movie portrays.
- 4:20Speaker 2: So for those of you who haven't seen it, there's
- 4:21Speaker 2: a boy who's being raised by a very rich dad.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Rich dad's very cranky at the boy. It's a cartoon
- 4:25Speaker 2: by the way because he's entitled and selfish and rich.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Dad owns like the postal system in their country, so
- 4:33Speaker 2: he sends his son to the most far reaching outposts.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Samehrenberg. It's labeled the saddest place on Earth, and you
- 4:41Speaker 3: see it in the depiction of the animation. Everything's just great.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Hey, what do you guys think you're doing?
- 4:48Speaker 3: This is Smirnsburg, the unhappiest police on Earth.
- 4:52Speaker 2: And there are two warring families who just hate each other.
- 4:54Speaker 2: And there is no postage service there like nobody actually,
- 4:57Speaker 2: no one writes a letter. Everybody hates each and it's
- 5:01Speaker 2: the story of how this young man, well, it's a
- 5:04Speaker 2: coming of age and it's a hero story. He saves
- 5:08Speaker 2: the town, he becomes a person who falls in love
- 5:11Speaker 2: with the spirit of Christmas and changes everything.
- 5:13Speaker 1: It's a great movie.
- 5:14Speaker 3: My second one is going to be.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Arthur Christmas.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Hello Phillel's Jingle Jingle Jingle, Rod time eighteen point one.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Four second grows.
- 5:28Speaker 2: We've got a staff member, Elizabeth, who told us how
- 5:30Speaker 2: great Arthur Christmas was, and it was it was an
- 5:33Speaker 2: absolute jour.
- 5:35Speaker 3: I survive, I'll walk home, I'll get a boat, but
- 5:41Speaker 3: I am never getting back in that crazy flying death
- 5:44Speaker 3: trap ever again. I just I loved it. Here's this kid,
- 5:48Speaker 3: he's Santa Claus, his son, and he just loves Christmas.
- 5:52Speaker 3: But he gets in the way, is a glutz everything,
- 5:56Speaker 3: but he endsed up actually saving Christmas this time.
- 5:58Speaker 1: What's your third one?
- 5:59Speaker 3: It's actually Evelyn's favorite cheese and Craigs.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Oh is it Craigs as well? Elf?
- 6:06Speaker 3: Okay, people tomorrow morning to dam Santa's coming down?
- 6:12Speaker 1: Oh my god, Santa.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Here, I know him so much fun. I probably would
- 6:19Speaker 3: never ever have watched this. It has Will Farrell and
- 6:23Speaker 3: I don't really like him very much as an actor,
- 6:25Speaker 3: and I probably wouldn't have put it in as a
- 6:27Speaker 3: kid's movie as a result of him being in it.
- 6:31Speaker 2: He's absurd. He's absolutely ridiculously over the top absurd.
- 6:35Speaker 3: You stink.
- 6:36Speaker 1: I think you're gonna have a good Christmas like beef
- 6:39Speaker 1: and cheese. You don't smell like Xander.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Okay, that's what makes it so delight so good. So
- 6:51Speaker 2: are there any other great kids Christmas movies that you
- 6:54Speaker 2: think we should mention?
- 6:54Speaker 1: Because that's only three. I said we were going to
- 6:56Speaker 1: do like a top five.
- 6:57Speaker 3: I don't think you can go past a Christmas movie
- 7:00Speaker 3: without giving a mention to Home alone. I've made my
- 7:04Speaker 3: family disappear. We all grew up with that movie and
- 7:10Speaker 3: it still has to be on the top. I'd say
- 7:14Speaker 3: top ten movies ever.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Great slapstick comedy.
- 7:17Speaker 2: And our children, even our teenagers, watch that and laugh
- 7:21Speaker 2: their heads off.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Harry, how did you take your shoes off?
- 7:26Speaker 2: Why the hell you dressed like a chicken.
- 7:28Speaker 1: I'm gonna per you more. Aunts, come and get me.
- 7:35Speaker 1: You guys, give up, you're thirsty for more.
- 7:38Speaker 3: And the last one I'm gonna mention would be Santa
- 7:41Speaker 3: Claus with Tim Allen?
- 7:42Speaker 1: What you put on a little weight? A little weight?
- 7:45Speaker 1: Does this look like a little weight to you?
- 7:47Speaker 3: And wait?
- 7:48Speaker 1: Can fluctuate from you to ear fluctuate? You make it
- 7:51Speaker 1: sound like I'm retaining water. I've given forty five pounds
- 7:55Speaker 1: in a week.
- 7:56Speaker 3: Here's this guy who's single handedly destroys Christmas by interrupting
- 8:01Speaker 3: Santa as he's trying to go down a chimney.
- 8:03Speaker 1: And he falls off the roof.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Her. Santa or Tim Allen Santa okay, and so his
- 8:16Speaker 3: son sees it all happenings. You have literally killed Christmas.
- 8:19Speaker 3: You've killed Sannah, right, so much fun.
- 8:23Speaker 2: After the break, we're going to talk about a handful
- 8:25Speaker 2: of other Christmas movies that may or may not suit
- 8:29Speaker 2: the whole family, but you, as a parent might really enjoy.
- 8:35Speaker 3: It's The Happy Family's podcast, the podcast for the type
- 8:38Speaker 3: or parent who just wants answers now and hopefully today.
- 8:41Speaker 3: We've given you a few options to keep the kids occupied,
- 8:45Speaker 3: so you can do your Santa.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Ring if that's necessary.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Wink quink.
- 8:50Speaker 2: So there's a couple of movies that we didn't mention
- 8:52Speaker 2: that I think need an honorable recognition.
- 8:55Speaker 1: The first one is Christmas Chronicles Christmas Term the Ground.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Now.
- 9:07Speaker 1: You actually were putting it on your list and I said, ah,
- 9:09Speaker 1: you know, it's not really that good. You're a trickster.
- 9:11Speaker 3: You just did it so you can have it.
- 9:13Speaker 1: On your No, no, no, it's not what happened.
- 9:15Speaker 2: What actually happened was that we watched the We watched
- 9:17Speaker 2: the trailer, and I was like, oh, that is a
- 9:19Speaker 2: really good movie.
- 9:20Speaker 1: I did enjoy that movie quite a lot.
- 9:22Speaker 2: And of course there are a couple of other movies
- 9:24Speaker 2: that again Christmas confession. Not only have I not seen
- 9:27Speaker 2: the Santa Clause, I haven't seen Bad Center. What about
- 9:29Speaker 2: the rain Deer. Would you please shut up about Reindeer?
- 9:32Speaker 1: And I haven't seen the holiday. You're not Irish, or
- 9:35Speaker 1: if you are, I'm much dronger than I realized.
- 9:38Speaker 2: But everybody says that those must watch grown up movies
- 9:42Speaker 2: for Christmas.
- 9:43Speaker 3: So I guess we're gonna have a few movie nights then.
- 9:46Speaker 2: I still don't know if I want to watch them,
- 9:47Speaker 2: to be honest, but everyone's been saying, you kind of
- 9:49Speaker 2: talk about those movies. They are amazing, So we've talked
- 9:51Speaker 2: about them even though we haven't seen them.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Is that cheating? That's so cheating.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Seriously, I hope you don't get in trouble. You don't
- 9:58Speaker 3: even know what's in them.
- 9:59Speaker 2: On top of that, I think we've got to acknowledge
- 10:01Speaker 2: while Christmas is not a time of faith for everybody,
- 10:05Speaker 2: there are a lot of people who listen to the podcast,
- 10:06Speaker 2: and there are millions upon millions, tens of millions of
- 10:09Speaker 2: people around the world who do have a religious faith.
- 10:11Speaker 2: And there are some really wonderful, religiously oriented, faith producing,
- 10:16Speaker 2: faith promoting movies about the Nativity. Different churches have them.
- 10:19Speaker 2: They're available online. They're often free, and will link to
- 10:23Speaker 2: a couple of those in our show notes for those
- 10:25Speaker 2: who are interested in some nice Nativity movies and things
- 10:29Speaker 2: that will help you to have the actual Christmas story
- 10:32Speaker 2: Sands Santa, no Sander in these ones instead the religious
- 10:37Speaker 2: foundations of where Christmas comes from. And I think that
- 10:40Speaker 2: sometimes it's nice to just pause and say this is meaningful,
- 10:43Speaker 2: even if it's not your religious faith. To talk to
- 10:45Speaker 2: the kids about what the background is. Find one of
- 10:47Speaker 2: the short ones, the ten or twenty minute ones that
- 10:49Speaker 2: just step through it. I think that that can help
- 10:51Speaker 2: us to appreciate what Christmas is all about for millions
- 10:55Speaker 2: and millions of people around the world. We really hope
- 10:57Speaker 2: that you've enjoyed the Happy Families podcast today and that
- 11:00Speaker 2: it's given you a little bit of inspiration or just
- 11:02Speaker 2: some nice reminiscence about how good the entertainment can be
- 11:06Speaker 2: around Christmas time. We hope that these movies inspire you
- 11:09Speaker 2: and your family to goodness and kindness and service and
- 11:14Speaker 2: fun for this Christmas. The Happy Families podcast is produced
- 11:17Speaker 2: by Justin Roulin from Bridge Media. Craig Bruce is our
