- 0:47So just hit me up guys. You know, emotional regulation
- 0:50is difficult for autistic individuals.
- 0:52Now, girls on the autism inspection will have issues with
- 0:54emotional regulation, down to the simple fact that females in
- 0:58the autism spectrum have a stronger connection to emotions.
- 1:01But there's still the issues with emotional regulation.
- 1:05Now, emotional regulation is regulating how you feel about
- 1:09emotions, how you feel with your emotions.
- 1:10Are you able to express emotions?
- 1:12Are you able to talk about your emotions?
- 1:14Are you able to tell someone how you really feel about your
- 1:16emotions? Now, emotions come from the word
- 1:20energy in motion. Now, what this means is that
- 1:21you'll have a buildup of energy that you want to express in a
- 1:24certain way. And emotion is how you express
- 1:25it, right? So you feel a certain way, you
- 1:27want to express it, you feel really, really happy.
- 1:29You'll smile and laugh and joke around.
- 1:30It would be great. But autistic individuals,
- 1:33because autism is inherently a communication disorder, the
- 1:36communication between yourself to know this is an emotion and I
- 1:40want to put that into motion or it isn't energy and I want to
- 1:42put it into motion. It's not there.
- 1:44It's disconnected. There's a, there's a, there's a
- 1:45disconnect. So instead we have emotional
- 1:48dysregulation or no emotional regulation at all, where you
- 1:52could be seen to be having a really stressful time in an
- 1:55event, which is really, really happy because you can't say, oh,
- 1:58you know, I'm actually really hot sat next to the window in
- 2:02the sun, can I move? You can't figure that out
- 2:05because your emotions are overtaking and you don't know
- 2:07which emotion you're going to put into motion, into an energy
- 2:09that is the way that you want it to be heard.
- 2:12So the importance of actually having emotional regulation is
- 2:15tenfold. You know, I mean, they have so
- 2:17many, so many areas. So let's go back a bit.
- 2:20How can we get this? How can we get it to a place
- 2:21where we understand if we think about energy in motion, again,
- 2:24it's really interesting if we break it down to two parts, you
- 2:26have energy, you have emotion. We all know how to motion.
- 2:29If I said to you, hey, you know, flap your hands, you just flap
- 2:32your hands, right? That's motion.
- 2:33If I said to you think about an energy, you'd be like, OK, I
- 2:36want to think about energy of feeling sad or think about
- 2:39energy of feeling happy, or think about energy of feeling
- 2:42hungry or the energy of feeling thirsty.
- 2:44You know all of those energies, right?
- 2:45So all we do is this. You need to analyze your
- 2:48position, your situation when you're in it, say, OK, I am
- 2:53feeling annoyed, annoying is the feeling, but how do I want to
- 2:57put that into motion? Stand up and talk verbally, so
- 3:02on. I am feeling very stressed, very
- 3:04anxious at the moment. I want to do something
- 3:05different. I'm uncomfortable.
- 3:06I need to move. Remember, choosing the energy or
- 3:10identifying the energy and then choosing the motion in which you
- 3:14relay that energy to somebody else or to the world is how you
- 3:18regulate emotions. Practice always makes progress.
- 3:21So this is what I this is what I tend to do.
- 3:23I tend to just tell randomly like my partner and my friends,
- 3:26I'll be like, huh, I'm feeling hungry right now.
- 3:27Because the more I practice understanding my own emotion,
- 3:30the better and more regular those emotions are going to be
- 3:33understood. So I can regulate my emotions
- 3:35more easy by practicing. Practice makes progress.
