- 0:00Hello, It's Friday. We're focused on Europe.
- 0:02Welcome to five things. EU edition.
- 0:17Alex, how are you? I'm good, thank you.
- 0:21Excited about NRA Europe next? Only only a few days until we're
- 0:25all going to be congregated in your home country beasting your
- 0:29fabulous cuisine, your awful traffic.
- 0:32I don't know what the weather is going to be like.
- 0:34Last year the weather was fantastic.
- 0:35I don't know what the weather is going to be like, but anyway,
- 0:37only two days left or three days left when you you said you're
- 0:41coming out on what they. Wednesday and Thursday.
- 0:44OK, well, I, I'm so excited. I'm going to be there from
- 0:47Monday. Wow.
- 0:48Yeah. I'm really excited, but it's
- 0:50looking too, but it's going to be a fantastic event.
- 0:52With that, let's let's get straight into this and I think
- 0:55you've got a fantastic new story to kick us off.
- 0:58Yes. So actually I'm going to start
- 1:02this one with the question for you, Alex.
- 1:04OK. Have you ever shocked for a
- 1:06second hand DIY items online negative in Ted or marketplace.
- 1:11No, and I buy a lot of tools and I buy them new.
- 1:14Oh, well, so that's, that's a good, it's a good moment to
- 1:18switch. Yeah, because I'm going to talk
- 1:20about the new retailer called Kishko.
- 1:24I'm not sure if I'm pronouncing it right, but it's also called
- 1:27The Vintage of DIY. The company started in Belgium
- 1:31and has been active in France for about a year now.
- 1:34So this is a platform that connects individuals and
- 1:37professionals to buy, sell or rentals, including building
- 1:41materials, gardening equipment and even home appliances,
- 1:46whether new or second hand. And what?
- 1:49The reason why I chose this article today is because they
- 1:54are going one step further with adding a new service, which is a
- 1:57repair service. So user can not only now resell
- 2:02or rent the DIY equipment but also have it repaired.
- 2:05So it could be done either by users or by professionals as
- 2:10well, which is very interesting. I think it's it's a great
- 2:13additional way to give equipment a second life and to strengthen
- 2:18the the circular economy and the DIY and home renovation sector.
- 2:22So let's. I love it and I think it's, and
- 2:25I've heard this before because a lot of the times people have
- 2:28said, you know, most of the time when you buy one of these,
- 2:31imagine a drill, you use it once and then it's sat in your garage
- 2:35or in your whatever, you keep your garage.
- 2:37So wherever you keep your tools. And so I think for a younger
- 2:42generation that doesn't potentially want to go and spend
- 2:44large amounts of money on DIY equipment, it makes it makes so
- 2:49much sense. I will.
- 2:51I will investigate. Yeah.
- 2:55Please do stop by you, yeah. Exactly, you love DIY and you do
- 2:58this every weekend. I.
- 2:59Don't love DIY, my wife loves DIY.
- 3:02I am just a worker so I have all of the tools, everything.
- 3:06I wouldn't want a laser straightening thing which is
- 3:09amazing for when you're putting shelves up anyway.
- 3:12This is not the DIY shows. You're a lucky man.
- 3:15And the company, sorry, just say it's it's it was founded by the
- 3:20entrepreneur, Brussels based Marin Emery.
- 3:23This company was born out of the sharp rise in construction
- 3:28material costs since 2020. And so the way it works is that
- 3:32sellers can list items for free and buyers or renters pay a 5%
- 3:38Commission with the option as well to meet face to face in
- 3:42order to avoid these fees. They also have a mobile app to
- 3:46make things easier and they have plans to roll out their services
- 3:50across Europe. So really excited to see how how
- 3:53it's going to roll out in in the future.
- 3:56I might do this right because I'm looking at this and thinking
- 3:58in in like 4 or five rentals I've paid for the for the drill
- 4:02might be a little little good enterprise for me.
- 4:05Yes, if the retail podcast doesn't work out, I'll go into
- 4:08hiring Halo moving on caring. So caring delay, delay.
- 4:12Reuters are reporting that Caring delays full value 17, our
- 4:16acquisition to 28 amongst their depth concerns, which in the
- 4:21world of luxury we're seeing a lot of transformation due to the
- 4:25pressure from the consumer, due to the pressure from other weak
- 4:29market and the Chinese shoppers slowing down in its consumption
- 4:35of European luxury brands. And Caring are the owners of a
- 4:40Gucci which has been suffering recently.
- 4:43And as you can see, Reuters reporting that Caring debt
- 4:46stands at €9.5 billion, impacting its acquisition pans.
- 4:51So I don't think they've called it off.
- 4:53They've just said that they're going to put it back as I think
- 4:56they need to look at their financing and how they get
- 4:59things in shape. But Caring is a huge, huge
- 5:02luxury house with lots of luxury brands and I, and I don't know
- 5:08if this is a shape of things to come.
- 5:10Are we moving into an era where the luxury market is reshaping
- 5:14and reforming? Maybe we are.
- 5:17Maybe we are moving on. So this next topic is about a
- 5:21brand that you you may know called Betty Bato.
- 5:25It's a famous French children's family clothing brand founded in
- 5:301920. And it was just bought by the
- 5:34American investment group Regent, which also owns Dim, the
- 5:39French underwear brand. And this is part of a wider
- 5:43trend in France lately, where iconic French brands like, for
- 5:47example, new pyromba or even Dolipan, the, the the medicine
- 5:53have ended up under foreign ownership.
- 5:57And this is the case of petty battle now.
- 5:59So what is going to happen to them now?
- 6:02So they will still have their factory and logistics sites in
- 6:06France, in Trois, more precisely, Trois is a city in
- 6:11northeast France and most of its employees will remain in France.
- 6:17And sales hopefully will grow slightly thanks to the the
- 6:22e-commerce. But now, now the biggest
- 6:24decisions will be made abroad, and even though the brand stays
- 6:29French in its heart and being owned by an American group could
- 6:34change its strategy and identity over time.
- 6:38So I'm very curious about what's gonna happen.
- 6:41But on the other hand, I don't think a foreign ownership is
- 6:46always bad because the Tibeto could have struggled or even
- 6:51disappeared if no one came in. So it now has a chance to
- 6:56explain globally while staying a bit of the French brand,
- 7:00hopefully. Yeah, I think it's a, it's a
- 7:02model that we've seen in CPG, right, where brands that have
- 7:06exist, I mean, they they started in 1893.
- 7:10So I mean it's an incredible story.
- 7:12And obviously it gets to a point where they are probably
- 7:16fantastically ready for global expansion because of the
- 7:19heritage they've got that they just probably don't have the
- 7:22money and so be interesting to watch.
- 7:24I think when it's done right, it's great for the brand, it's
- 7:27great for the investors, but you know, I it depends on how it's
- 7:31executed to do what comes in. That story is on the Fashion
- 7:34network just in case you're watching this and you can see.
- 7:37So please I'll put the links in the show notes.
- 7:40Go to the Fashion Network for the full story.
- 7:44Staying with Reuters again and luxury, Giorgio Armani will
- 7:49instruct to gradually sell fashion brand or seat an IPO.
- 7:54Now it's interesting why they're doing this at this time in terms
- 7:59of the what's happening as as we just said with the the story,
- 8:03but with the late fashion design journal instructing is as to
- 8:07sell 15% stake in the Italian fashion house. 18 months later
- 8:12transferred an additional still and you can you can sit here
- 8:15additional 30% to 54% to the same buyer between three and
- 8:20five years after his death, according to the will revoke.
- 8:24I'm sorry, reviewed by Reuters and it's an alternative to the
- 8:28initial public offering, which I I I'm not a fashion connoisseur,
- 8:33so I can't talk about how relevant Giorgio Armani is
- 8:38beyond its traditional where it's done really well.
- 8:42And again, is this a brand that we've seen that could
- 8:45potentially sort a new heights or is this a brand that sort of
- 8:49had its day and maybe fading and this is a way to look at how
- 8:54they're going to inject capital into into this brand to see what
- 8:59what's going to happen? Again, I'm not an expert in this
- 9:02area to be able to say is it going to go one way or the
- 9:05other? But for me, it's more of an
- 9:06interesting statement of another luxury brand looking at the way
- 9:10that it's going to structure itself over the next 5-10 years.
- 9:15And we can only watch the story again.
- 9:17This is on Reuters. If you want, the link will be in
- 9:20the notes. And finally.
- 9:23Moving on to grocery retail and more specifically retail media
- 9:28and so Ocean and I've just announced a new alliance and for
- 9:33context, Ocean is one of France biggest supermarket in
- 9:37hypermarket chains and the Muscatar is a French retail
- 9:41group best known for it's Antel marshes supermarkets.
- 9:45And the true this is unusual. The two groups are now combining
- 9:50their retail media businesses so both Values and Infinity
- 9:55advertising to create what they call the European leader in the
- 10:00field so they will cover more than 10,000 stores across six
- 10:05countries. What?
- 10:06Yeah, I can see Leroy Merlin is here as well.
- 10:09So home improvements as well. Exactly with the strong digital
- 10:14audience. And this move shows how quickly
- 10:19retail media is consolidating in Europe.
- 10:22Ocean and Marche clearly want to rival Carrefour and pubisis, and
- 10:28pubisis is quite big in that field.
- 10:31And so the battle is heating up. And it's clear that nowadays
- 10:35retailers don't just want to sell groceries, they also want,
- 10:39you know, a, a, a slice of the advertising market.
- 10:43So it's interesting, interesting to see.
- 10:46And yeah, this is unusual to see an alliance like that.
- 10:49So I'm really looking forward to to see how it's going.
- 10:52Yeah, it's an interesting one because in the UK version of
- 10:55this show, I covered Morrison's and Instacart.
- 10:58And Instacart is a network of retail media or grocery in the
- 11:05US and obviously they have a trolley that has a screen on it,
- 11:09but they're Morrison's as the first UK retailer.
- 11:12And for Instacart is the first outside of the US deploying
- 11:16this. And and this is driven by,
- 11:19again, how do they generate revenue from, from CPG
- 11:24companies? So this is super, super
- 11:25interesting. And the fact that it's across
- 11:27Europe as well, it's not just in France, it's it, it's where was
- 11:31it? It was like in Spain, in Italy
- 11:33there is France, Belgium, Italy, Poland, Spain and Portugal.
- 11:37So this is what the big network that they've, they're creating
- 11:41so well, really interesting to see really good.
- 11:44OK with that. I will see you next week at NRF.
- 11:48Yes, in person. Yeah, in person finally.
- 11:50Well, actually I think I saw you in April in person, Yes, but now
- 11:54I get to see you again in in Paris.
- 11:56So it's wonderful having someone who's local because I'm sure
- 11:59you're going to take me to all the coolest retail hotspots in
- 12:03NRFI mean it's like outside. So OK Alex, until next week,
- 12:08look forward. To yes.
- 12:09Until next week, yes. Thank you.
- 12:11Bye.
