- 0:00As God intended.
- 0:02Let's go.
- 0:20You are listening to America Out Loud News Radio.
- 0:23I am your man Monk, and we have a very special guest today, Mr.
- 0:29Sherman Landry.
- 0:32What's happening, Sherman?
- 0:35I'm gonna call you Sherm.
- 0:36Because that's going on well, Monk.
- 0:40Yep, glad to be here.
- 0:42Mm-hmm.
- 0:44Yeah, I'm I'm I appreciate you showing up and taking time out of your day to come and share your knowledge and story with us.
- 0:54Yes, yes.
- 0:56So what's what tell us a little bit about your background and what molded you?
- 1:03You know, uh, you know, all the all the little all the influences along the way, I believe, you know.
- 1:09Um, you know, um, I was uh, you know, I was born out of wedlock, right?
- 1:17And so uh, and so uh, you know, I kind of had like two families, you know, one family that I didn't really know really well, and then another family that I grew like basically raised me, you know.
- 1:28And uh, and and within that itself, you know, there's some challenges with that, really trying to, you know, figure out who you are, you know what I mean.
- 1:37You know, raised kind of in the Catholic church, you know, under uh that doctrine, and uh, you know, just trying to figure out like uh, you know, life, you know, because all we want to do is have purpose and and understand the world we live in, you know.
- 1:54And uh, you know, school, you know, sports, uh, you know, challenges along the way through some of those things, you know, always was a pretty good decent athlete and also decent with the academics and stuff.
- 2:07Um, you know, uh, but more on the shy side, you know what I mean?
- 2:12Like when I was doing sports, you know, I wasn't as shy, but internally, you know, you know, there's some shyness there, you know.
- 2:18So trying to overcome that and find out who I am within, and uh, and uh, yeah, yeah, pretty much, you know, just trying to see how I fit in this whole scheme of things.
- 2:30So I want to go back a little bit.
- 2:32When did you realize or how did you learn that you were you know, you had these two different families?
- 2:41How was that expressed to you?
- 2:43When did you find when did when it when did it click?
- 2:46Because a lot of kids they don't know even what that means.
- 2:49Some are never even told until yeah, yeah, it just kind of clicked.
- 2:55Uh, you know, as I got a little older, probably like teenage, you know, um, I really understood it a little bit better.
- 3:03Um, my oldest sister from the family side, my mom's side, because my mom passed when I was two years old, my biological mom.
- 3:12And so uh my oldest sister, she would always be the one to try to keep in contact with me, you know.
- 3:20And uh when I went to college, you know, she'd write me letters and just you know, let me know how the family's doing and things like that.
- 3:28And uh, you know, it's one of those things where I didn't really have a real bond with that side of my family.
- 3:35But then as I went to college, I started, you know, starting wondering more about that side of my family.
- 3:40And so I started to connect more with them.
- 3:42And as I got older and more mature, I realized the value of that, you know.
- 3:47And so when I would come down to Southern California to visit my parents, I would make sure I would try to connect with that side of my family, you know.
- 3:56And now on that side of my family, I only have one sister alive, you know, and uh we talk quite often, at least probably once a week, you know, and when I come down Southern California to visit, because I live in Northern California, I try to always reach out to her or go visit her, you know.
- 4:14So were you raised with other siblings?
- 4:17Uh yeah, I was raised with another brother.
- 4:21Herman, you know, I'm Sherman, he's Herman, you know, he's a junior.
- 4:24Yeah, and so uh, you know, that that's that was always it's always nice to have a big brother kind of showing you the rope, showing you what to do, and sometimes showing you what not to do.
- 4:36Yes.
- 4:37How about your relationship with with him growing up?
- 4:40Uh it was a good relationship because you know, I I kind of felt like he was all I had as far as another sibling, you know what I mean?
- 4:47Um, you know, we have some similar interests, you know.
- 4:51Uh he wasn't that interested in sports like I was, you know, but for the most part, you know, uh he was my big brother, you know.
- 4:57He took care of me.
- 4:58He looked out for me, you know.
- 5:00You know, if I was having issues, you know, with someone in school, he, you know, he definitely would come by there and handle it for me.
- 5:08He was he was a protector.
- 5:10He was a protector, yes, sir.
- 5:12Okay, okay.
- 5:13And and you you grew up down in Southern California.
- 5:16Yeah, I grew up down in the uh uh I grew up initially in the uh LA area, area they call the jungle, you know.
- 5:24That's where I grew up, and we we lived there until about 1976, and then my parents moved to uh Altadina, California.
- 5:33So you you were you were in Baldwin Hills, huh?
- 5:36Yep, below Baldwin Hills, right there.
- 5:38They call it the jungle.
- 5:39The place is totally changed now, though.
- 5:41But uh yeah, yeah, grew up there.
- 5:44Yeah, that's where they filmed uh uh Denzel Washington uh training day, part of the training day, they filmed it there.
- 5:52I didn't know that.
- 5:53Wow, you know, when he when he was outside and he pulled up and everybody started coming outside, yes, it should have looked familiar.
- 5:59I was right there, you know what kind of does now that I think about it, you right.
- 6:03It kind of does look like that, you know, you're right.
- 6:08How was that growing up, you know?
- 6:09Because LA is like infested with gang activity, especially at that time he was just getting started in the in the 70s.
- 6:19Yeah, you know, I think what was helpful for us, my dad was law enforcement, LAPD, you know what I mean?
- 6:26So, you know, it kind of deterred us from you know, you know, being, you know, associating ourselves with gangs and things of that nature.
- 6:35And you know, and my parents did a great job, my mom, my dad on trying to, you know, keep us active and busy, you know, with school, with with sports, you know, with uh with you know, traveling and things of that nature.
- 6:49And so, you know, I was really blessed to have that kind of support, you know what I mean, and not trying to seek it other places.
- 6:56Well, I think your father being a LAPD wouldn't wouldn't do too well staying in the jungle.
- 7:00Wouldn't do too well staying in the jungle.
- 7:04You're correct.
- 7:04You're correct, correct.
- 7:05Correct.
- 7:06I think you can move outside of that area because it probably wasn't safe for you or family.
- 7:06I think the move outside of that area because it probably wasn't safe for you or family.
- 7:13Yeah, one thing that's kind of a trip is like, you know, Pop's being in law enforcement.
- 7:13Yeah, one thing that's kind of a trip is like, you know, Pops being in law enforcement, but you know, as a kid, you know, and almost having that underdog kind of mentality, you know, you I always like, you know, the uh how do I want to say this?
- 7:17But you know, as a kid, you know, and almost having that underdog kind of mentality, you know, you I always like, you know, the uh, how do I want to say this?
- 7:28I always like the uh
- 7:28I always like the uh kind of like uh I don't want to say basically I always kind of like the underdog, kind of like the you know, the person, you know, and sometimes that's not law enforcement, you know.
- 7:42So I kind of like, you know, and then growing up having some experiences where, you know, my dad definitely tried to teach us as kids, like if you ever have any issues with law enforcement or have any interactions, here's what you say, which was very valuable, you know.
- 7:56I would drop on a dime.
- 7:57Yeah, my dad is law enforcement.
- 7:58I'd let him know right away.
- 8:02You know, and I think that's helped us out in some situations to be honest, you know what I mean?
- 8:07Um, you know, and also, you know, making sure, you know, I speak lightly and things of that nature, you know.
- 8:13And so that was very, very helpful.
- 8:15But I hear what you're saying.
- 8:16But but I've always been like not really trusting law enforcement that much.
- 8:20I love my dad and I love what he does, you know, and his attitude.
- 8:24But as far as law enforcement in general, you know, there's some biases there, you know.
- 8:30That is so interesting because uh growing up, I had an opportunity to uh know law enforcement, and it's almost like the only law enforcement that you trust is the ones that you know.
- 8:46Exactly.
- 8:46Because you get treated different if you know them, and it's so it's so interesting to me.
- 8:52And people that don't have this color, they don't have that same experience.
- 8:58Like the the anxiety that happens when you get pulled over, you don't know what you don't know what's gonna happen.
- 9:05So did you get teased, or did people look at you a little bit different because your father wasn't law enforcement?
- 9:11You know, to be honest, Pops was really good at, I mean, he wouldn't come home like with his uniform and stuff, and he didn't ever work with where we lived, you know.
- 9:20So unless they unless he told them, you know, no one really knew, you know what I mean.
- 9:26Um as we moved to Al Tadina, it might have been more obvious, you know, and he may have shared that information with more people where he worked and stuff, but for the most part, uh I I never got teased uh because he was in law enforcement or anything of that nature, you know.
- 9:42Nope, that never happened.
- 9:46Yeah, it just seems like, you know, because if especially if you hang around any type of uh kids that are getting into any trouble, look at you a little bit different, like, oh, his his dad, I I don't want to really be around.
- 10:01No, that didn't help.
- 10:02I mean, I was definitely, you know, you know how it is growing up, you know, trying to find your way, you know, you definitely do run into some cats that uh you know will get you in some trouble real quick, fast and in a hurry.
- 10:14If you allow it, you know what I mean?
- 10:17So you kind of dodged the dodged the the six-lane freeway, and you didn't really get caught up when you was a kid.
- 10:25You know, uh I look at my past and stuff, and I just feel like uh there'll definitely probably be some angels looking over me, maybe probably my mom, my biological mom, because uh not that I've done like some real horrific things, but just uh, you know, there could it could have gone sideways.
- 10:41It could have gone it went one way, but it could have gone the other way, you know what I mean?
- 10:45But I just think through the grace of God and just you know, um uh it did not.
- 10:51Yeah, and it's like it could be one decision that it changed your whole life.
- 10:57Yes, sir, and and not just in a negative way, it could be one positive decision.
- 11:03Yes, changes your whole life, one decision can completely change the trajectory of your life.
- 11:11Yes, one choice.
- 11:13One choice, one choice.
- 11:15Isn't that something?
- 11:16Yeah, yeah, it's life is precious.
- 11:19Isn't that something?
- 11:20Yeah, one choice you could be uh moving towards your best life, or get a huge opportunity, or with one choice, you could be sitting down in prison for the rest of your life, or or even worse.
- 11:34Yes, yeah, yeah.
- 11:37I know, yeah.
- 11:38I've known some people who have experienced that, you know what I mean?
- 11:41You know, some people that I dearly loved, you know, and it's just yeah, it's it's yeah, that can happen.
- 11:48Your belief systems.
- 11:50Yes.
- 11:50As far as like your what was your core beliefs if you did actually know what your core beliefs was when you were a child.
- 12:02What what did you believe?
- 12:04Because you know, everything shifts as you get older, you start to think different about life.
- 12:09As a child, what did you what did you think it was all about?
- 12:14You know, you know, I think as children a lot of times we're just like like sheep, we're just following whatever the adults and people are around us.
- 12:26And so again, growing up in the Catholic church, you know, going to Sunday school, uh I think I did a little bit of alter boy stuff, you know, you know, um, but that you know didn't last that long.
- 12:39Something that I noticed and I remember now as a kid, I never felt fed there.
- 12:44I never felt like connected to what was being said or what was going on.
- 12:50You know what I mean?
- 12:51I didn't really start looking at like beliefs, like real serious like spiritual beliefs until I went to college.
- 13:01That's when that really started to develop.
- 13:03You know what I mean?
- 13:04Kind of like, you know, some people when I was kind of more on my own, you know what I mean?
- 13:09And that's when, you know, I started to really look at like religion and different things and how you know I felt about those things and you know, and what you know, I wanted to add to my belief system, you know.
- 13:23And so uh that's when um I started really looking more deeper into Christianity, you know, um, and what was and and what was there for me and Jesus and things of that nature.
- 13:36Um, because when I went to college at Humbold State University, I met the these people that were part of this small like Christian group, you know, and you know, I really enjoyed the energy there and stuff like that.
- 13:48I enjoyed the people.
- 13:50Um, one of the guys on the football team was also a participant of brother Ron Johnson, um, was a participant in the group.
- 13:58Um, and I was young, you know, I'm a freshman in college, you know, I'm what 800 something miles away from home, you know, just kind of doing my own thing, you know.
- 14:00You know, I'm a freshman in college, you know, I'm what 800 something miles away from home, you know, just kind of doing my own thing, you know.
- 14:07And uh, and you know, it was good for a little while, but one of the things that that kind of peased me off a little bit about some churches and and religions is that, you know, they that the control piece, you know what I mean?
- 14:07And uh, and you know, it was good for a little while, but one of the things that that kind of peased me off a little bit about some churches and and religions is that you know, they that the control piece, you know what I mean?
- 14:22Like, you know, you may have thoughts and ideas of things you want to do, you want to look into, you want to pursue, but the control thing, and so.
- 14:22Like, you know, you may have thoughts and ideas of things you want to do, you want to look into, you want to pursue, but the control thing, and so there was a point um when I came up to college, my my high school sweetheart, she was pregnant with my first child, Emmanuel.
- 14:38And so I had decided at that time I was gonna go marry her.
- 14:44And for some reason, the folks at the church didn't think that was the right thing.
- 14:48And so that's when I kind of knew it was time for me to go.
- 14:53You know what I mean?
- 14:54That seems interesting.
- 14:56It seems like it'd be the opposite, right?
- 14:58Yes.
- 14:58Yes, yes.
- 14:59They'd be kind of excited about a family growing or building or coming together, two people, but yeah.
- 15:05So that's when I kind of thought, hmm, this is probably not the place for me.
- 15:09You know what I mean?
- 15:12And at that point, you know, that kind of hurt a little bit, you know, because you know, you like the people, you like the environment, you know.
- 15:18Um, but I just thought, you know, maybe this just isn't for me, this environment.
- 15:23And so, you know, I just kind of did my own thing.
- 15:25At that time, you know, I really got into poetry and things like that.
- 15:29You know, I really tried to really seek the meaning of life, you know.
- 15:34I think uh I'm sure from knowing you that you're still trying to understand, try to trying to see more clearly what it's all about.
- 15:46I think that's a never-ending journey.
- 15:51Every day.
- 15:54Every day, that's for sure.
- 15:57I did not know that you were involved in Catholicism.
- 16:01What did what was your what was your takeaway from all that?
- 16:05It really didn't do anything for you.
- 16:07You know, um, again, as I was saying about my past, I I've that I've seen miracles happen.
- 16:14You know what I mean?
- 16:15In my own life, you know.
- 16:16So I know there is a higher power.
- 16:19You know, at that time, you know, um, I was seeking more understanding of that.
- 16:25You know what I mean?
- 16:26Because again, I've seen miracles happen.
- 16:28I've experienced it.
- 16:29I've seen them not only in my life, but other people's lives.
- 16:32So I know there's a greater power.
- 16:35And so uh, you know, like anything, you kind of put some things on the back burner, you know, you know, you focus on your school, you know, my wife came up with a manual, you're trying to find how you're trying to just make everything make sense, you know.
- 16:48You're young, you know, you're trying to be like a figure out how to be a real father, you know.
- 16:54Um, you know, just trying to feel what what relationships are like, what meaning, you know, um, trying to really figure out who the hell I am.
- 17:02Right.
- 17:04I want to hear when we come back from break, I want to hear more about the miracles and the in the different things, and you starting from grow up and having this being young and having this young child, but we'll we'll get to that after the break.

- 19:47And you were talking about before the break.
- 19:50You you that you witnessed miracle.
- 19:52I'm so curious.
- 19:54So now you're very young.
- 19:56You're a baby on the way.
- 20:04Yes.
- 20:05And what's what are you what is your age at this time?
- 20:09Ooh, I was uh shoot.
- 20:11I was 18.
- 20:13Eight.
- 20:16You team, man.
- 20:18That's incredible.
- 20:19When you look at it from this perspective, being the age that you are now, it's like 18.
- 20:23It's like wow.
- 20:25Yeah.
- 20:25Yeah.
- 20:26That would be a tough one.
- 20:28Like if my son would say, at 18, I want to get married.
- 20:31You know, we definitely would have a conversation.
- 20:33You know, I'd let them figure out what they want to do, but ooh, we 18, you know.
- 20:37I mean, I hadn't even really experienced life.
- 20:40You know, you know, and what it has to hold, you know.
- 20:43So yeah.
- 20:44Mm-hmm.
- 20:45So tell me that the I know there's a ton of challenges being in this type of situation.
- 20:52Yeah.
- 20:53Going to school and trying to get good grades and making a living and taking care of a family and being away from where you were raised up.
- 21:00Where you were raised up.
- 21:02Tell me about that.
- 21:02Tell me about that.
- 21:03Man, I I think about it now, you know, uh working a full-time job, going to school full time, and also playing sports, and then also the family piece, you know, which is probably the most important piece.
- 21:03Man, I I think about it now, you know, working a full-time job, going to school full time, and also playing sports, and then also the family piece, you know, which is probably the most important piece.
- 21:17Um, I don't know how the hell I did that.
- 21:17I don't know how the hell I did that.
- 21:20I don't know.
- 21:20I don't know.
- 21:21You know, working graveyard shift at the meal, you know, going to school, you know, participating in sports.
- 21:21You know, working graveyard shift at the meal, you know, going to school, you know, participating in sports.
- 21:28I mean, there was times I had to bring my kids.
- 21:28I mean, there was times I had to bring my kids, Emmanuel and Justin.
- 21:32I had to bring them to uh practice.
- 21:35You know, some there was times when Justin was little, he wasn't in daycare, old enough to be in daycare yet.
- 21:40He had to come to class with me.
- 21:42You know what I mean?
- 21:43S CR.
- 21:43So yeah, it's just you just we just do what we have to do in that moment, man.
- 21:48You know, um, you know, uh, yeah, we just do what's possible.
- 21:54That's that's impressive.
- 21:56Any anybody that that that's a whole lot.
- 21:59How do you how the resilience?
- 22:02How did you get through that?
- 22:04Like what did you do when the pressure was really on?
- 22:07How did you get through those moments that were very, very, I know you said you do what you gotta do, but how did you do it?
- 22:15What gave you the fortitude?
- 22:19How did you did you have practice?
- 22:23Did you did you pray?
- 22:24Did you how'd you get through that?
- 22:26You know, I think prime, you know, a couple things.
- 22:29Um the the role models, my mom and dad.
- 22:32They've always worked hard, they've always uh, you know, they've always sacrificed, you know.
- 22:39Um the second thing is my wife Lisa, you know, without her, you know, this would all not be possible.
- 22:46Wow.
- 22:49The relationship challenges.
- 22:51Yes.
- 22:53We all have those.
- 22:55Yes, we do, we do.
- 22:56And what's what's a trip is like I said, you know, even though I was making those moves, you know, I'm still trying to figure out who I am and trying to grow up my own self.
- 23:07You know, so it's really like kids trying to raise kids.
- 23:12You know what I mean?
- 23:12Because you really don't when you know, the way they designed this whole thing is uh survival mode.
- 23:18You know what I mean?
- 23:19As far as like uh, you know, those things I was telling you about, and then you know, all the other things, it's like it's really just trying to uh make it all make sense.
- 23:28But uh yeah, like I said, without the support, without the uh yeah, it would it would have been impossible, you know.
- 23:35It really would have now you think you said impossible.
- 23:40I know I know you, and I'm cool that you think that everything is possible.
- 23:46So I'm calling I'm calling you on that.
- 23:49Yes, yes.
- 23:51Mm-hmm.
- 23:52Yeah, yeah.
- 23:53You know, you know, again, we just do what we have to do.
- 23:55And like you're saying, at that time, in my mind, I wasn't thinking like this is impossible.
- 24:00We just did it, you know.
- 24:02Um, we just did it.
- 24:04I remember when I first um when I first came to Humboldt, you know, um, and I was uh I had to come early for the season, uh, because I was a part of a summer bridge program.
- 24:14We came in the summer, you know, kind of like kind of like minority uh students come into an area, you know, it gives them a chance to get acclimated during the summer.
- 24:23They take classes, they kind of learn the campus, you know, they learn some of the staff, the different departments, they take classes.
- 24:30It was really kind of it really was kind of eye-opening because then I had a chance to meet other people from like LA, other people from like the Bay Area, you know what I mean?
- 24:38And then those people through that summer bridge program would attend the next the next session semester, you know.
- 24:44And so I already kind of had like a network in a community of people.
- 24:48It was it was slightly different because I also had my family that I had to bring up.
- 24:53So I just remember one day after practice, getting off practice early, football practice early, and just taking the bus from uh Arcada to Eureka, having it drop me off right on the uh north end of Eureka, got off the bus, and I'm just walking, looking for an apartment, so then I can bring my family up.
- 25:10You know what I mean?
- 25:11I eventually found a place, you know, shortly after that, they came up and just things just took their course from there, you know.
- 25:18You just try to figure out how to how to make ends meet.
- 25:21You figure out how to support your family, you know.
- 25:23You just, you know, I think just seeing the motto of my mom and that making it happen.
- 25:28You know what I mean?
- 25:29It just felt like I could make it happen too.
- 25:34Yeah, we can make it happen too together, yeah.
- 25:36Good role models for you.
- 25:38Yes, and I really I really cherish that, and I feel so blessed to still have them.
- 25:44I even tell other people, I mean, it's just amazing that I can be with my mom, be with my dad, have conversations, hold my mom saying, hug her, love her.
- 25:53You know, I feel so blessed.
- 25:54I really do.
- 25:56And you know, I've met your parents and they are some beautiful people.
- 25:59Yeah, I told them they can't go till they 150.
- 26:06They can't go till they 150.
- 26:10Yeah, I mean, you know, life life is it so now the kids are getting a little bit older.
- 26:16Yes.
- 26:17The kids, not not right now, but we'll want to go chronologically, right?
- 26:22Now they're a little bit older.
- 26:23You're you're out of school.
- 26:25Mm-hmm.
- 26:27What is that time period like?
- 26:29Now you're just in the workforce.
- 26:33Yeah, yeah.
- 26:34Just uh just you know, I worked uh for in social services and employment and training.
- 26:39Um that's one thing as a child.
- 26:42I always I always had a heart for people who are struggling.
- 26:48And so I always wanted to help people.
- 26:50I never knew how, you know, or why or which way I'd do it, but I uh when I had an opportunity to work for the county and help individuals going through the system, find employment, you know, and figure out maybe what they want to do with their lives as far as their skill sets or what type of skill sets they wanted to obtain.
- 27:07Um, and actually working with them one-on-one.
- 27:10It just was my aha moment.
- 27:14This is what I want to do.
- 27:16Um there was a moment later in my career where I became a supervisor.
- 27:21I didn't find as much joy in that than I did working directly with the clients.
- 27:29What made you that natural compassion that human beings have, but some people do not tap into that.
- 27:37You did it just feel natural for you to have compassion for other people.
- 27:42You know, I think I you know, I just just talking to you right now, the thought that came in my mind is that that's one of my superpowers.
- 27:50You know what I mean?
- 27:51Um I even notice sometimes when I see people walking and they're in pain, it's almost like I feel it in my body a little bit.
- 28:00You know, you know, and I want to look into that a little more to figure out what that is.
- 28:00You know, you know, and I want to look into that a little more to figure out what that is.
- 28:06I know exactly what it is.
- 28:06I know exactly what it is.
- 28:09Well, tell me.
- 28:09Well, tell me you're an empath.
- 28:11You're an empath.
- 28:12Impath they feel other people.
- 28:12Impact feels they feel other people.
- 28:15Umpas be are very in tune with uh pain and emotions.
- 28:15Umpas be are very in tune with uh pain and emotions.
- 28:21Yes.
- 28:21Yes.
- 28:22I'm the same way.
- 28:22I'm the same way.
- 28:23And for a lot of people, it's it's I think it's natural when children are very
- 28:23And for a lot of people, it's it's I think it's natural when children are very young, because children always want to help and they always feel when you're in pain, right?
- 28:34Yes.
- 28:34So if you're going through something, they feel that, and they'll come up and hold you or hug you, and are you okay, daddy?
- 28:40That type of thing.
- 28:41But then somewhere along the line, it is the connection starts to get a little bit weaker.
- 28:47Yes.
- 28:48Caught up in your own stuff, and you stop worrying about other people and start to be concerned strictly with yourself, and we kind of lose it.
- 28:55But some people don't.
- 28:56Some people always feel for people.
- 28:59Yes.
- 29:00Yes.
- 29:01You know, again, like that underdog, always wanting things better for people that maybe don't have what other people have, you know.
- 29:09Um definitely, especially like to like children, you know, women, things of that nature, you know.
- 29:17Um, yeah, just trying to be a positive uh support.
- 29:22You we don't try here, Sharon.
- 29:24We we just oh yeah, we do, yeah.
- 29:26No try, no try.
- 29:29What is a try?
- 29:30Yeah, a try is a lie.
- 29:33Right, a try and a lie, very much, sir.
- 29:36Yeah, this is the way as a community, as a uh a planet that we can heal each other, yes.
- 29:46So in this park in in this interview, or in this platform, it's about health, health, healing, right?
- 29:56And there's all different types of healing, you know, physical, emotional, spiritual.
- 30:01I think it goes uh healing can look and look several different ways.
- 30:08Doesn't it's when people say healing, most people just think of the physical, but healing is also I think even more so emotional.
- 30:19I think our emotions and our stored emotions actually cause physical illness, yes, in the body.
- 30:28So, and I know you've been on this spiritual uh quest for lack of a better word uh in the last several years.
- 30:38I'm curious that how that original your original uh introduction to religion, Catholicism, and then going into uh more so the Christian uh religion, even though they're both Christian, they're different, everybody knows that, and then leaving that and now going on this almost this independent search for you know for spirituality within yourself, you know.
- 31:15I just stop, I just really like I just really didn't want to be a sheep anymore.
- 31:24I I wanted to have a little more understanding of what's going on.
- 31:28Um I really when they say God is within us, I want to know more about that.
- 31:38I want to know more about the God that's inside me.
- 31:40You know what I mean?
- 31:42Um, you know, I don't I don't feel like now I I don't feel like I need to go to church now, you know.
- 31:47I I can have I can I can build that relationship with God one-on-one, you know what I mean.
- 31:53Um I just I feel like I feel like a bombs went off and just I have access to a lot more knowledge and information now, you know, where I'm at on my journey, and I'm gonna continue this journey because I feel like it's fueling me.
- 32:07It's like it's giving me what I wasn't getting, you know, from the Catholic church, you know.
- 32:14Um is truth, you know what I mean?
- 32:16And that's kind of what I'm seeking right now.
- 32:19I'm seeking truth, you know.
- 32:20I want to understand things better, you know.
- 32:23Um, and part of that is putting the time in and the research in and trying to you know tap in, you know.
- 32:31You're you're definitely um you're definitely tapping in.
- 32:35You're not trying to tap in.
- 32:36Yeah, tap in, tap in.
- 32:41And I believe that knowing oneself is the key, yes, to freedom.
- 32:50Yes, I feel but I came to the conclusion that dang near everything I learned was a lie.
- 33:03I gotta correct it.
- 33:05I gotta I gotta make it right, you know, and that's kind of the journey I'm on.
- 33:09And and and and at times that can be a lonely journey, you know, because not everybody's seeking the same thing.
- 33:16Some people are comfortable just living living a lie.
- 33:22The matrix, in my opinion, is a is a documentary.
- 33:27Yes, and and you can, I mean, it's easy to see how our you know, our caregivers, the first per people that we were around, how they shaped us, yes, how the school system shaped us and whatever religion we were in, how that shaped us.
- 33:43And depending on what kind of political affiliation our parents had, how that shaped us.
- 33:49And then we identify with that whole persona that's not even us, and we know something is not right, yes, there's something missing.
- 34:01Yes, that's so true.
- 34:03It's kind of like an analogy that, like, you know, your dad's a 49er fan, and that means you're probably gonna be a 49er fan as a kid.
- 34:10And then once you grow up, you might be, I don't even like the colors of the 49ers, you know.
- 34:15Once you start forming your own opinions and ideals, yeah, it's very similar, but you know, this is really serious, you know, because we're talking about our livelihood, our lives, and um what we believe.
- 34:26And so it's it's it's just been really eye-opening, you know.
- 34:30Um, because I see like uh this this I'm gonna just say world because it's really worldly, you know, but I see this place could be a whole lot better for a lot of people, you know what I mean, and um just understanding like how we're all connected, you know what I mean.
- 34:48There's so much division, you know what I mean?
- 34:51That like if we were just connected and everybody was on the same vibration, this would be this would be an amazing place to live.
- 35:02It really is, I mean, that's that's it's a fact.
- 35:07It's a fact.
- 35:08Um, if we all had that compassion, not only for others, but for ourselves, yes, and realize that we were all we all are interconnected, yeah.
- 35:09If we all had that compassion, not only for others, but for ourselves.
- 35:13Yes.
- 35:14And realize that we were all we all are interconnected.
- 35:18All the wars in the that it's like there would be nobody to fight.
- 35:18All the wars in the that it's like there would be nobody to fight.
- 35:23Yes.
- 35:23Yes, yeah, it'd be nobody to fight, and I'm not trying to say, oh, the world's gonna be perfect, or but they're literally we'd be.
- 35:23Yeah.
- 35:24It'd be nobody to fight.
- 35:25And I'm not trying to say, oh, the world's gonna be perfect.
- 35:28But there literally would be no one to fight.
- 35:30We'd be able to communicate even if we disagree with that silence.
- 35:36You know, violence uh back in the day I used to participate a little bit.
- 35:41And I'm sure you did too.
- 35:43Me too.
- 35:44Yeah, and that's not it at this point.
- 35:47It's it's it doesn't make any sense to me.
- 35:52Yeah, I see the transition once my eyes were open up to what's real.
- 36:00Um it's changed my whole persona.
- 36:03You know what I mean?
- 36:04Just as far as how I move, what I focus on, you know.
- 36:10Um it's it's it's it's kind of freed me to some degree, you know what I mean?
- 36:16It it's it's it's freed me, you know, and so uh, but again, it can be a lonely journey at times.
- 36:25It can be, you know, but yeah, because not everybody's you know, on the same page, you know.
- 36:31Um some people are just figuring out like you know what to make the dinner or what you know what I mean.
- 36:36They're not thinking about these kind of deep things, you know what I mean.
- 36:39Um, you know, but they know something's off, right?
- 36:43But they're not they focused on that, you know.
- 36:45And I guess maybe it's not their time, you know, or you know, what have you, you know.
- 36:50But me, I just I just something was missing.
- 36:54Something was missing.
- 36:55There was pieces missing to the puzzle.

- 39:18I'm with my special guest, Sherman Landry.
- 39:22Sherm.
- 39:23And we were talking about before the break, we were talking about spirituality and healing.
- 39:32And what in the last few years, because I've seen the change in you.
- 39:42What did you see that you were not seeing before you started to do some more investigation within yourself?
- 39:51Yeah.
- 39:52You know, part of it was to, I'm trying to say working with uh working for the county, you know.
- 40:02Um they provide you with if you want to participate in it, lots of training, you know, on people, on you know, um support on the psychological pieces of it, uh, you know, they a lot.
- 40:19And I really think like just participating in that because I wanted to have as many tools as I could when I'm working with the population to be able to support them, you know.
- 40:28It really kind of softened my heart, man, you know, and made me understand like the you know, I'm here to help people, and uh through that, I think it kind of was opened up the door, you know, the gateway to trying to find more, you know, that I can be more um be more uh I don't want to say successful, that's not the word, but be more a part of the solution than the problems, you know.
- 41:00And then um, you know, my buddy Monk, you know what I mean?
- 41:05My buddy Monk, you know, seeing your journey, you know, um, and seeing where you came from and where you're at now, you know what I mean.
- 41:13I was always like that, you know, that's that's one of the biggest miracles that I've seen because you know, we we used to do some things, you know, we used to do some things, you know, good and bad, but you know, so you know, just just and then other people in my life, and um just you know me wanting that for myself, you know what I mean?
- 41:36Me me wanting that for myself and for my family, you know, because if I'm better, you know, that's gonna resonate with everybody else around me and echo, you know what I mean.
- 41:47And so I just I just I just I just felt like it needed it, it was time, and then it starts off with reading more stuff that that kind of opens up the door, the gateways and kind of gives better understanding, you know, on how to move, you know.
- 42:00Ways and kind of gives better understanding, you know, on how to move, you know.
- 42:05Um, and again, like you said, as far as my parents, I love my parents, and I'm glad they raised me the way they raised me, you know.
- 42:05Um, and again, like you said, as far as my parents, I love my parents, and I'm glad they raised me the way they raised me, you know.
- 42:12You know, but again, they only know what they know.
- 42:12You know, but again, they only know what they know.
- 42:15You know what I mean?
- 42:15You know what I mean?
- 42:16What they have the time to invest time and energy into.
- 42:16What they have the time to invest time and energy into, and I think that's just how they design this world, you know, this country where you know they try to keep people in survival mode, just trying to pay bills, you know, just trying to fill their gas tank.
- 42:19And I think that's just how they design this world, you know, this country where you know, they try to keep people in survival mode, just trying to pay bills, you know, just trying to fill their gas tanks, you know, just trying to buy material things, kind of things.
- 42:33They ain't really focused on like, you know, you don't have the time to just like, okay, let me sit back.
- 42:38I didn't really have the time to sit back and really do more discovery until I retired.
- 42:44That's when I really had the time to really like, okay, let's go deep.
- 42:50And so uh that was really the eye-opening time during retirement where I had the time to really uh focus on those things, you know, and try to find more understanding and more purpose, you know.
- 43:03But even to want to do that, to have the uh awareness to do that, most people do not.
- 43:11You'll be surprised people have time, and it's almost as if when they do retire or have a bunch of time, they don't even know what to do with themselves, first of all, and then looking deeper within is not even something that comes into their awareness.
- 43:29Well, I felt like the time.
- 43:33I felt like uh again, pieces were missing, and I just felt like if I don't have time to figure this out now, when will I have time?
- 43:45You know what I mean?
- 43:46And so I just made a concerted effort to really make it a part of my lifestyle, you know, as far as uh reading more, reading good books that talk about the inner me, so I have better understanding.
- 43:58Uh, but the biggest thing was the meditation.
- 44:03That was the biggest thing was the meditation, you know, which which I do daily, you know, my meditations and stuff, um, and as needed, you know.
- 44:13Um, and I think that's the reprogramming piece is the really big piece, you know, because you know, if I didn't do that, I think I would fall back into where I was, you know.
- 44:25So I try I'm trying to make sure I'm moving forward with my life, you know, um, and and how I think, and and again, trying to trying to be a better version than I was yesterday.
- 44:36How did that affect you?
- 44:37The meditation.
- 44:38Take give me some examples of how that changed the way you moved or think or or even if it did.
- 44:46You know, like the book breath, that one book you referred to me, you know, you recommend it.
- 44:52It just made me understand like how important breathing is.
- 44:55You know, I realize just reading that book, like I'm a shallow breather.
- 45:00I mean, I have been a shallow breather, you know, like I ain't even taking full breaths.
- 45:04How's that affecting my mind?
- 45:05How's that affecting my body?
- 45:06How's that affecting my spirit?
- 45:08You know, so now I'm more conscious of that.
- 45:10So I make sure that you know, I'm breathing properly, you know, when I'm doing things, when I'm working out, when I'm meditating, you know.
- 45:18Um, and there's so many different styles, you know, breath techniques for certain things too.
- 45:24And and when you hear about the healing powers of the breath work, you know what I mean?
- 45:29Again, God gave us everything we need.
- 45:33You know what I mean?
- 45:34Yes, indeed.
- 45:36God gave us everything we need, you know.
- 45:39This this temple we live in wants to heal itself.
- 45:44Yes.
- 45:44But we have to allow it to do that, you know, um, by what we eat, what we think, what we say, you know, our environment, you know, all that plays into it, you know.
- 45:58And so uh, and I didn't realize that as a young person.
- 46:01I didn't realize that as a teenager.
- 46:03I didn't realize that when I was working a lot, you know what I mean?
- 46:06I just realized that after I retired.
- 46:09And that's because I wanted I put the effort in, you know, and I'm gonna continue to put the effort in because I haven't arrived.
- 46:15I'm on this journey for life.
- 46:19Absolutely.
- 46:20And and we I think we all should be sweet, or always expanding.
- 46:25I think when we stop expanding, it's it's over for us.
- 46:30I think we can become more of ourselves every single day.
- 46:34And if we just get out of the way, get out of our own way and start to get present again, everything will start to work as it should, I believe.
- 46:45That's my belief about it.
- 46:46What do you believe about that?
- 46:47I believe to say I was just telling somebody about getting out of their way yesterday.
- 46:52Because it's something, I mean, I mean, it's not really my biggest issue in the past wasn't people.
- 47:00It was me, as far as like how I think and sometimes how I'd move, you know what I mean?
- 47:05And so, yeah, and that's when I just realized I gotta get out of my own way.
- 47:10You know what I mean?
- 47:11I mean, you know, if it's sabotaging, if it's, you know, making the wrong choices of decisions, you know.
- 47:17Um, you know, I value life, you know, I really do.
- 47:21And so um, understanding that, you know, sometimes we could be our biggest threat to ourselves is important, you know.
- 47:29Um, because it's so easy to blame somebody else for something.
- 47:33You know, it's so easy to do that.
- 47:35Say this person is the problem, this person is the problem, but you know, you got uh nine, ten problems from different people.
- 47:41You got to realize maybe they're not the problem.
- 47:43Maybe you're the problem.
- 47:45You know what I mean?
- 47:46But some people aren't willing to be that way or humble themselves to think that.
- 47:51You know what I mean?
- 47:52So they want to blame everybody else, you know, and they'll be blaming everybody else for the rest of their lives, you know, living a miserable life, you know.
- 48:00I want to I want to take control of what's going on, man.
- 48:03I I really do feel like I feel like, and it's not like a controlled thing, but I just feel like where I'm at now feels amazing.
- 48:12Feels things that used to bother me in the past don't bother me.
- 48:16You know, things that didn't matter don't matter.
- 48:19You know what I mean?
- 48:20I can really focus my energy on what I need to focus my energy on.
- 48:25Understanding that, you know, um, you know, um, I'm electric being understanding, like uh, yeah, just spending the time, you know.
- 48:36Um, there's so much amazing resources out there to support all this stuff too, you know.
- 48:42Um, and I know sometimes people just don't know where to look or where to go, but um, you know, people on this same journey will support you, you know, and give you knowledge, give you feedback, you know, help support you, you know, because uh, you know, I again I just want truth right now.
- 48:59And that and that's what I've been striving for, because you know, a lot of things that I used to believe in or that I knew about, I'm realizing are really kind of like a facade.
- 49:00And that's what I've been striving for.
- 49:01Because, you know, a lot of things that I used to believe in or that I knew about, I'm realizing are really kind of like a facade.
- 49:10It ain't even real.
- 49:10It ain't even real, you know, and I mean like, dang, well, you know, I thought life living this life was kind of real, you know.
- 49:12You know, and I mean like, dang, well, you know, I thought life living this life was kind of real, you know.
- 49:19I understand we're like a spiritual being living in this body, you know what I mean?
- 49:19I understand we're like a spiritual being living in this body, you know what I mean?
- 49:24Once this body is gone, we still gonna keep it moving.
- 49:24Once this body is gone, we still gonna keep it moving, you know what I mean?
- 49:26You know what I mean?
- 49:27You know, I'm just I'm just trying to be on.
- 49:27You know, I'm just I'm just trying to be on this plane just once.
- 49:31You know, I've probably been on it before.
- 49:33I'm just trying to make this the last time, you know.
- 49:36I'm ready to take elevate.
- 49:38That's right.
- 49:39That's right.
- 49:39And when you're talking about making excuses being the to back it up a little bit, making excuses as easy.
- 49:46It is easy.
- 49:47It's the easiest thing you can ever do.
- 49:49You don't have to take accountability for yourself.
- 49:52No, no accountability, man.
- 49:54And don't get don't misunderstand me.
- 49:57I'm saying there's terrible things that happen to people.
- 50:00Yes.
- 50:01But if you're gonna continue to blame these things that happen in the past, it's just gonna take your present, which is gonna take your so-called future.
- 50:12So 100% responsibility for your life right now.
- 50:17Yes.
- 50:17Do the healing, uh, whatever you gotta do to heal and move forward making your own decisions, and don't allow past experiences to dictate your future.
- 50:31One of the things that kind of popped up while you were talking, uh thought about is you know, I used to it used to be really hard to take any kind of criticism.
- 50:40But I realize when someone brings something to you, it could be a staff member, it could be a family member, it could be a friend, it could be anybody, you know.
- 50:50There may be something in what they're saying you need to hear.
- 50:54You know what I mean?
- 50:55It may not be how they presented it, the tone, but there may be something in there that you need to hear.
- 51:01That's why you heard it.
- 51:03I'm trying to get that out, and maybe there's nothing.
- 51:06You know what I mean?
- 51:07But I'm not letting what happened mess up my day, mess up my week.
- 51:13You know what I mean?
- 51:14I feel like that's the control piece.
- 51:16Taking the control and understanding, like that's not an issue with me.
- 51:21That's an issue with that person.
- 51:23You know what I mean?
- 51:24But maybe there's something in what they're saying I need to hear as I move on down the road.
- 51:30You know, so what I'm hearing from you is the control isn't trying to control the situation, but controlling how you respond to it.
- 51:37Exactly, which I think is crucial, you know, especially nowadays, you know.
- 51:43Because there's so many like negative things happening out there, there's so many storylines, there's so much, man.
- 51:50I mean, there's so much, uh, what do you call it?
- 51:52Uh distractions.
- 51:54You know, it's so easy to go down that rabbit hole.
- 51:57And so I'm much better at that now, you know, than I used to be.
- 52:02And so, what do you do on a to stay tapped in on a daily basis?
- 52:09Can you give people a little bit about what you do on a daily basis since you don't work?
- 52:14Um, you know, I I read, I meditate, I work out, you know, which I think is really important.
- 52:22But even with those, like not with the meditation, a little bit with the reading, but with the working out, sometimes there's a little bit of challenges in that.
- 52:30Like once I get there, I'm good.
- 52:32And I feel amazing afterwards, amazing, you know.
- 52:36But sometimes getting there, you know, the mind will play tricks, you know.
- 52:40And so sometimes it's like, but I gotta get there.
- 52:43Once I'm there, I'm good.
- 52:45So that's something that I would like to tighten up a little more.
- 52:47Like I worked out this morning, worked out the other day.
- 52:50So I'm I'm getting better at it, you know what I mean?
- 52:53But I need to make it a conscious effort to participate in the working out a little bit more, you know, because I know that's when I'm at my best.
- 53:03You know what I mean?
- 53:04But that that's that's one of those challenges, you know what I mean?
- 53:08Like that that I deal with it, I'm sure other people deal with is that uh we know it's good for us, right?
- 53:14But just like eating, we know certain things are bad for us, but it's just trying to uh rewrite it, trying to uh reprogram, you know what I mean?
- 53:25Like I've been programmed most of my life.
- 53:28So I gotta figure out how to reprogram that.
- 53:31It's not gonna take place, it's not gonna happen in a day, a week, a month, a year.
- 53:35It's gonna take time, but I gotta be consistent.
- 53:39Consistency is everything, and it just simply sitting in the present, um mindfulness meditation, rewire does rewire your brain.
- 53:50I I was there, I've done it.
- 53:52I know for a fact that that's that's what can happen if you're consistently um tapping in.
- 53:58It's pretty important.
- 53:59You know, the way life is, you know, you know, the way life is now, you know, there's a lot of distractions, cell phone, your laptop, the internet, the TV, you know, the television is telling somebody else's vision, you know.
- 54:14Um I feel comfortable just in silence now with nothing on.
- 54:21You know what I mean?
- 54:22And that was hard back in the day.
- 54:24You know, you feel like you gotta be doing something, you gotta be talking to somebody, but man, silence is is beautiful.
- 54:31I I agree 100,000 percent.
- 54:35There's no there's not that many distractions when it's silent.
- 54:38Yeah, but but a lot of times people are holding on to so much it gets noisy inside.
- 54:43Yes, it does.
- 54:45They don't want to hear that.
- 54:47So we gotta wrap, we gotta wrap it up.
- 54:49Yes, here in a couple minutes, and I just want you to leave them with something.
- 54:54Leave them with something to take away from this um interview that that you think is is really important.
- 55:02You know, I just kind of feel like not feel, but I know if if if if uh you feel something's missing, don't seek it outside of you.
- 55:12Seek it inside of you, because you have everything you need inside to be the person you want to be, to have the success you want to be, to love.
- 55:24We need to love each other, man.
- 55:25That's the main thing.
- 55:27Yeah, love over fear.
- 55:29I think I heard that somewhere.
- 55:31I might have heard it somewhere too.
- 55:33Yeah, I agree.
- 55:34I think love is the answer.
- 55:36I'm always gonna think it's the answer.
- 55:38I don't know what the question is, but I know that love is the answer.
- 55:41Yes, it is.
- 55:43I I the the hippies from the 60s, they they except for the drug aspect of it.
- 55:50They really were going, they had something going.
- 55:54Yes, they did.
- 55:56I I'm right with them on that.
- 55:58Yeah, my thing right now is uh peace, man.
- 56:00A peace, man.
- 56:01I ain't worried about money.
- 56:01I ain't worried about money, I ain't worried about none of this other stuff.
- 56:02I ain't worried about none of this other stuff.
- 56:04I'm worried about, I mean, I'm not worried, but I'm focused on my peace.
- 56:04I'm worried about, I mean, I'm not worried, but I'm focused on my peace.
- 56:07Yes.
- 56:07Yes.
- 56:09Nothing's more valuable than to then having peace in your life.
- 56:09Nothing's more valuable than to then having peace in your life.
- 56:13And sometimes, and sometimes I realize like, you know, I can't be around certain people long or at all sometimes because if it's gonna affect my peace, it really ain't worth it.
- 56:13And sometimes, and sometimes I realize, like, you know, I can't be around certain people long or at all sometimes because if it's gonna affect my peace, it really ain't worth it.
- 56:25That's right.
- 56:25That's right.
- 56:26Well, I appreciate you so much, uh shrimp and
- 56:26Well, I appreciate you so much, uh Shrim, and we'll have to do it again because we just gotta circle back around.
- 56:34You'd have made a whole transformation, 360 in your life.
- 56:39And if I don't often tell you I am proud of you.
- 56:43Yeah, I'd love to do this again anytime.
- 56:46Okay.
- 56:47Well, y'all have a beautiful rest of the day, and we'll talk to you soon.
- 56:50Peace.
