- 0:20Speaker 1: That's free. And he's here to talk about a couple
- 0:23Speaker 1: of movies. What do we got ye.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Two that I saw for this week? I got busy
- 0:27Speaker 2: with stuff.
- 0:29Speaker 3: There's We'll start with Dead of Winter, all right. This
- 0:32Speaker 3: is playing in a few theaters around the valley. It
- 0:34Speaker 3: is a thriller starring Emma Thompson's who's the name you
- 0:38Speaker 3: think of when you think of thriller right here. She
- 0:41Speaker 3: plays a Minnesota woman who's gone up to a remote
- 0:44Speaker 3: Minnesota lake in the winter to do some ice fishing
- 0:47Speaker 3: and memory of her husband.
- 0:49Speaker 2: We know that much.
- 0:50Speaker 3: We know that much going in, and we find out
- 0:51Speaker 3: more as we go. She comes up to someone at
- 0:54Speaker 3: a cat she's trying to find this lake way up
- 0:56Speaker 3: in the in the middle of nowhere, and she comes
- 0:58Speaker 3: up to somebody in the cabin asks for directions and
- 1:01Speaker 3: goes on her way, But then she hears a gunshot
- 1:04Speaker 3: and the guy is yelling at somebody, so she circles
- 1:07Speaker 3: back around and soon figures out that the guy and
- 1:09Speaker 3: his wife have kidnapped a young woman for reasons that
- 1:12Speaker 3: takes some time to explain.
- 1:14Speaker 2: The wife is played by Judy Greer. We like her.
- 1:17Speaker 3: It's fascinating to watch Judy Greer and Emma Thompson go
- 1:20Speaker 3: at it. It's too really, two good actresses sort of
- 1:23Speaker 3: going against type here.
- 1:25Speaker 2: The problem Judy is usually comedy.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, The problem here is is that the story
- 1:31Speaker 3: gets increasingly hard to swallow as it goes. It doesn't
- 1:36Speaker 3: help that Emma Thompson's Midwestern accent sounds a little too
- 1:39Speaker 3: much like Frances McDormand and Fargo. Two and a half
- 1:44Speaker 3: Stars for Dead of Winter. Oh yeah, it's at a
- 1:46Speaker 3: few theaters around the Like I said, a few theaters
- 1:48Speaker 3: around town, around.
- 1:49Speaker 2: The balt and a half. So the big one, the
- 1:52Speaker 2: Big One. One. Battle after another.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Which is the title is a little hard to remember
- 1:59Speaker 3: a little. It's a little interesting. But this is the
- 2:01Speaker 3: new movie from Paul Thomas Anderson. And when Paul Thomas
- 2:05Speaker 3: Anderson puts a movie out. It's an event. You look
- 2:08Speaker 3: at the what he's done in the last few years,
- 2:09Speaker 3: you know, you know, you're talking about the guy who
- 2:11Speaker 3: did Boogie Nights.
- 2:11Speaker 2: There will be Blood, Phantom Thread.
- 2:13Speaker 3: His last movie was Liquorice Pizza So and this is
- 2:18Speaker 3: one of his best And that's based on that list.
- 2:21Speaker 2: That's saying a lot.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Bob, who's living with his teen
- 2:27Speaker 3: daughter Willa, played by this really good young actor named
- 2:31Speaker 3: Chase Infinity. She's really cool. Chase Chase Infinity, Chase Infinity.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Bob mostly hangs out in his bathrobe smoking pod. It's
- 2:39Speaker 3: kind of a get kind of a Lebowski vibe about
- 2:42Speaker 3: this guy. But Bob used to be a revolutionary radical,
- 2:46Speaker 3: leading a group that did things like breaking into federal
- 2:48Speaker 3: detention centers and robbing banks, trying to you know, to
- 2:51Speaker 3: pay for the overthrow of the government. All Right, we
- 2:53Speaker 3: see some of that life in the movie's first half hour.
- 2:56Speaker 3: In the prologue, sixteen years earlier, Bob and his lover Perfidia,
- 3:00Speaker 3: played by Tana Taylor, who's a really charismatic actress. She's
- 3:06Speaker 3: she's sort of the lead revolutionary and she's so hot
- 3:09Speaker 3: that she that that a homeland security officer played by
- 3:12Speaker 3: Sean Penn becomes obsessed with her. Okay uh, and that
- 3:15Speaker 3: changes everything for all.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Of them and ways that you will see if you
- 3:19Speaker 2: watch it.
- 3:20Speaker 3: The movie mostly deals is how Bob has to protect
- 3:23Speaker 3: Willa from the Sean Penn character who becomes as obsessed
- 3:26Speaker 3: with Willa as he was obsessed with her mother, and
- 3:30Speaker 3: so to protect her, Bob has to rely on his
- 3:32Speaker 3: old skills as a revolutionary, which are a bit rusty.
- 3:36Speaker 3: The network is still out there, but he like he
- 3:38Speaker 3: can't remember all the passwords and stuff, but he's also
- 3:42Speaker 3: got it. There's a there's like I said, there's a
- 3:44Speaker 3: network of people underground, including a former comrade played by
- 3:47Speaker 3: Regina Hall and Willis karate teacher who's played by Pnicio
- 3:52Speaker 3: del Toro, who has who has his own underground thing happening,
- 3:56Speaker 3: which which is fascinating the same. Yeah, they referred to
- 4:00Speaker 3: him as sense that. Yes, the great thing about this
- 4:03Speaker 3: movie is that it's got it's got bits of drama, comedy,
- 4:05Speaker 3: political satire, action, and and Paul Thomas Anderson weaves together
- 4:10Speaker 3: really well and he told me it's a great it's
- 4:13Speaker 3: a great role for DiCaprio to chew on, and he
- 4:16Speaker 3: really I mean we we we I think we take
- 4:20Speaker 3: Leo for granted.
- 4:21Speaker 2: I think we take Leonardo.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Granted because he's he's so good and just sort of
- 4:26Speaker 3: you know, digs himself into a role and.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Has he never won an Academy. He won.
- 4:33Speaker 1: And he won for uh the Watch eating Gilbert Grape did.
- 4:37Speaker 3: He was nominated for Gilbert Gray, but no, he won
- 4:40Speaker 3: for he won. He finally won his Oscar for the Revenant.
- 4:43Speaker 3: He wasn't even nominated for Titanic if you remember, Well
- 4:46Speaker 3: that was okay by me anyhow, So four stars for
- 4:50Speaker 3: one Battle life?
- 4:53Speaker 2: Will he be nominated for this?
- 4:54Speaker 3: You think there is some talk that this is going
- 4:57Speaker 3: to be the one, This is going to be the
- 4:58Speaker 3: one that finally gets pta. Is Oscar really all that
- 5:02Speaker 3: Paul Thomas Anderson has been And it's sort of the
- 5:04Speaker 3: way the sort of the sort of the way people.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Looked at.
- 5:08Speaker 3: No Country for Old Men a few years ago, which
- 5:11Speaker 3: is like, yeah, it's like, okay, the Collens have finally
- 5:13Speaker 3: proven themselves. This will be the one that we load
- 5:16Speaker 3: everything up on for for them. So this this could
- 5:19Speaker 3: be the one where finally we say, okay, yes you
- 5:21Speaker 3: made There Will Be Blood and and uh and and
- 5:25Speaker 3: and uh Phantom Thread and all these great movies. But
- 5:29Speaker 3: now we're gonna now now you're one of us, and
- 5:31Speaker 3: Oscar will bestow it's wealugh on you. Magnoldia is one
- 5:34Speaker 3: of my favorite of all the time. And what's the
- 5:36Speaker 3: one with Punchdrunk Club?
- 5:39Speaker 1: Punchdrunk Club? I love that movie as well. That's a
- 5:42Speaker 1: really that's a Paul Thomas Anderson movie. That's just a
- 5:44Speaker 1: very you know, like There Will Be Blood, it's very big,
- 5:48Speaker 1: huge spectacle, and and Spannings and then Punch Struck Glove
- 5:52Speaker 1: is just a very simple, really good emotional movie.
- 5:56Speaker 2: He's made some great movies.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Sure has all right four stars for one battle after
- 6:00Speaker 1: another with Leonardo DiCaprio.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Is he married to Maya?
- 6:05Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, Uh, Paulson is right, and it's been married
- 6:14Speaker 1: for quite a long time.
- 6:14Speaker 3: I was way too old for one of the cool
- 6:16Speaker 3: One of the cool things Paul Tom Sanderson did was
- 6:18Speaker 3: that he was the standby director for Robert Altman's last movie, Uh,
- 6:24Speaker 3: the Pray Home Companion. They Hit, They had Hit and
- 6:27Speaker 3: my Roof had a part in that movie and Paul
- 6:30Speaker 3: Tom Sanderson stayed on set in case Robert Altman died,
- 6:34Speaker 3: really so they could keep the movie going. Wow.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Yeah, Okay, you know, I.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Had resisted seeing Boogie Nights for quite a long time
- 6:41Speaker 1: because I didn't really like the The subject matter was
- 6:44Speaker 1: about the world of pornography, and and I really didn't
- 6:47Speaker 1: want to see a movie about that. Finally I saw it, Okay,
- 6:50Speaker 1: I'm gonna watch it, and was just blown away by
- 6:53Speaker 1: how emotional and just incredibly well done. It was a
- 6:58Speaker 1: lot of good actors in that great scenes.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Kind of fell apart in the second half for me,
- 7:03Speaker 3: but but generally, yeah, I agree with you. The In
- 7:06Speaker 3: some of the interviews for this movie, everybody for this
- 7:08Speaker 3: movie is doing interviews DiCaprio and everybody else.
- 7:11Speaker 2: DiCaprio talks about how he.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Was offered Dirk Diggler in in Boogie Knights and turned
- 7:16Speaker 3: it down to do Titanic.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Oh, and how he said he kind.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Of regretted that because he didn't get a chance to
- 7:21Speaker 3: work with Paul Tom Sanderson. So finally he's getting that change.
- 7:24Speaker 2: He's getting that change.
- 7:26Speaker 3: I know, turned down the turned down the biggest movie ever,
- 7:28Speaker 3: and yeah, the biggest, the major career, right exactly.
- 7:31Speaker 2: So what do we got next week? Next week?
- 7:32Speaker 3: Okay, so October is coming, and so we're starting to
- 7:35Speaker 3: see the Oscar bait movies. And we got one next
- 7:38Speaker 3: week called The Smashing Machine.
- 7:40Speaker 2: I haven't heard anything about.
- 7:41Speaker 3: This is Dwayne Johnson playing one of the pioneers of
- 7:44Speaker 3: MMA fighting. And he apparently changed his look and and
- 7:50Speaker 3: and changed his.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Whole physique to match. He got lean, he.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Got lean and yes, so yes, we are talking about
- 7:56Speaker 3: Dwayne Johnson for Oscar consideration.
- 7:58Speaker 1: I'm predicting that he just be the same guy he always.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Well, it's it's SPUs got great response at like Toronto
- 8:06Speaker 3: and the you know, the festivals and so on. Emily
- 8:07Speaker 3: Blunt plays his wife.
- 8:09Speaker 2: So they're back together again. So were they together? I
- 8:13Speaker 2: never the Jungle Cruise? Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, okay, Oh
- 8:16Speaker 2: that was a great movie. Yeah, different, different movie altogether.
- 8:19Speaker 2: So that's it was good. I just said they worked together.
- 8:22Speaker 2: That's that's the That's the big one.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Next week.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Also Good Boy, good Boy, which is a horror movie
- 8:27Speaker 3: where the lead character as a dog. Oh it's a heart,
- 8:31Speaker 3: it's a horror movie.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Is a dog.
- 8:34Speaker 3: He's a good boy, he's a good boy, because.
- 8:39Speaker 2: That could have been ironic. Good boy, He's no, it's not,
- 8:43Speaker 2: it's not. I don't think it's Kujo.
- 8:45Speaker 3: All right, Well, thank you Sean means going to Sean
- 8:49Speaker 3: doesn't have anything at fan X today, but I got
- 8:51Speaker 3: four panels tomorrow, three, four, six and eight, so I
- 8:56Speaker 3: do the afternoon shift.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Thank you, Thank you, Sean,
