- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Back, what's going on?
- 0:14Speaker 1: Everybody is Jeff Mosher, Adam Kaplan and this is it.
- 0:18Speaker 2: This is the finale. We finish off.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Our long but very insightful, really interesting discussion contract podcast
- 0:25Speaker 1: series Eagles Contract Podcast Series. We're gonna finish it up
- 0:29Speaker 1: looking at safeties. We've done this by position group. I
- 0:31Speaker 1: think has been really enlightening. I think it's allowed us
- 0:34Speaker 1: to really understand what the Eagles look future or current
- 0:38Speaker 1: looks like, and what it's gonna look like in the future.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Who's gonna be easy to assign, who's gonna be difficult
- 0:42Speaker 1: to assign? All the difficult decisions that will go ahead.
- 0:46Speaker 1: So we will finish us off with safety in this podcast.
- 0:48Speaker 1: But there was some transactional news that we also wanted
- 0:52Speaker 1: to get to. We have discussed a little bit of
- 0:54Speaker 1: the aj Epenesa signing and then in the aftermath the
- 0:58Speaker 1: retirement of.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Joe Tryon Shoyinka.
- 1:01Speaker 1: There were a couple of you know, we mentioned a
- 1:02Speaker 1: couple of guys at him, like Gutavius Brown and DeVante Parker,
- 1:07Speaker 1: but there were a couple we forgot, like Miles Jack.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Miles Jack retired, oh yeah.
- 1:11Speaker 3: And then the one Alexander last you forgot about that
- 1:14Speaker 3: one that that was so strange, that one.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Which one I forgot? Oh yeah, yeah, of course.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:19Speaker 3: When he retired and he practiced once apparently we understand
- 1:23Speaker 3: he practiced well, and then and he was bothered him
- 1:25Speaker 3: again and that was it.
- 1:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:27Speaker 3: That that that that that and that tells you a
- 1:29Speaker 3: lot about when you're when you don't you've got one
- 1:32Speaker 3: play when player's a stud. But on the other side,
- 1:35Speaker 3: you're struggling and you're depending on a guy like JayR.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Alexander has had massive injury problems mm hmm. Like you
- 1:41Speaker 3: don't want ever be in that position, so that that's
- 1:43Speaker 3: what happens. Sometimes you get desperate. The Phillies are going
- 1:46Speaker 3: through that right now. If you're a Phillies fan with
- 1:48Speaker 3: all their needs, for sure, you know they haven't solved
- 1:50Speaker 3: the outfield thing in five years.
- 1:52Speaker 5: It's longer, yeah yeah, yeah, but.
- 1:56Speaker 3: It's pat you don't want to go, you don't want
- 1:58Speaker 3: to patchwork. That's what how he had done at corner back.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Now he's trying with Reek Wolan. We you know, we
- 2:03Speaker 3: talked about his situation on the other show. But the
- 2:06Speaker 3: safety position, it's a little bit of patchwork. It's I know,
- 2:10Speaker 3: you can't the one has a perfect roster, but this
- 2:13Speaker 3: is one. This has become a little bit the new
- 2:15Speaker 3: linebacker for them in a minor way.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, it's hopefully no we will retire on them
- 2:21Speaker 1: in the Yeah, well that would be yeah, yeah, exactly,
- 2:24Speaker 1: but oh on epiness.
- 2:25Speaker 3: It's it's kind of funny. They essentially gave him the
- 2:28Speaker 3: exact same contract. Now it's not essentially it is dollar
- 2:32Speaker 3: to dollar, the same contract that gave to Joe try
- 2:35Speaker 3: On Shayinka.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Which was basically guaranteed what like six hundred and thirty
- 2:40Speaker 1: five thousand.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Was you're close, yeah, one, The exact number is one
- 2:44Speaker 3: point four oh two five, so just barely over one
- 2:47Speaker 3: point four million. Uh, they guaranteed six hundred and sixty
- 2:51Speaker 3: two five, so you know, just around half of the
- 2:54Speaker 3: money just replaced one guy for another.
- 2:56Speaker 4: I mean that.
- 2:57Speaker 3: What it probably tells you is he probably informed them
- 3:00Speaker 3: either sinking or was going to retire. But last weekend,
- 3:04Speaker 3: because remember when he missed the two the two mandatory
- 3:09Speaker 3: days and nothing got out. It's just odd for for
- 3:13Speaker 3: if they don't, because usually they'll let the reporters know
- 3:15Speaker 3: that it's excused nothing either got out and that was
- 3:19Speaker 3: it for him.
- 3:20Speaker 4: And then Epodessa.
- 3:21Speaker 3: You know, as we talked about before, he had a
- 3:22Speaker 3: one year, five million dollar deal with the Browns didn't
- 3:26Speaker 3: pass the physical.
- 3:27Speaker 4: You know what's interesting about that, which.
- 3:28Speaker 3: We've talked about this in our nine years, it is
- 3:32Speaker 3: fascinating where like one team goes, oh, well, we can't,
- 3:35Speaker 3: we can't do this, we can't, we don't like his knee, right,
- 3:39Speaker 3: and then the other teams we're fine with it. Now
- 3:40Speaker 3: obviously they're paying much less, but that's not the point, right.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Do you know how much the Browns had guaranteed in
- 3:46Speaker 2: that five years.
- 3:47Speaker 4: I don't know. Yeah, it's a good question, but I
- 3:48Speaker 4: don't know.
- 3:49Speaker 2: I think so. I think there's a misconception about the
- 3:53Speaker 2: epinessa signing.
- 3:53Speaker 1: And I was having this conversation with Josh hanneget our
- 3:58Speaker 1: Partners ninety seven to three ESP because he was sort
- 4:00Speaker 1: of he thought it was like one of those shrewd
- 4:03Speaker 1: type of offseason signings, like a le Garrett Blunt or
- 4:06Speaker 1: a Chris Long, where this guy's got a legit shot
- 4:10Speaker 1: to make the fifty three. And I think if you
- 4:12Speaker 1: look at Epines's career and how he played with the Bills,
- 4:16Speaker 1: and you know the fact that he was it was.
- 4:19Speaker 2: A Day two pick, right, he was a tech center
- 4:22Speaker 2: und pick.
- 4:22Speaker 1: I can understand why people would think that, but we
- 4:25Speaker 1: always say the contract will tell you.
- 4:28Speaker 2: I mean, this guy was out there for a while.
- 4:30Speaker 1: The Browns try to sign him only to a one
- 4:32Speaker 1: year deal, didn't like what they saw, didn't sign him,
- 4:35Speaker 1: and then the Eagles basically signed him after they realized
- 4:38Speaker 1: Tryon Shoyinka, who was a long shot to make the team,
- 4:41Speaker 1: was probably not going to be with the team. So
- 4:44Speaker 1: to me, Epinessa is as long of a long shot
- 4:46Speaker 1: as he can now. If he plays well, if he's healthy.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Sure he does have a good background, but I wouldn't
- 4:52Speaker 2: if I'm.
- 4:52Speaker 1: If you're a fan, if you're a big follower of
- 4:54Speaker 1: the Eagles and you do your own fifty three man's
- 4:57Speaker 1: or if you thought this was kind of one of
- 4:58Speaker 1: those Chris Long, Legarrett, no kay Beck, and it's not that.
- 5:02Speaker 2: I mean, this guy's got a long, long climb to
- 5:04Speaker 2: make the fifty three.
- 5:05Speaker 3: He's not a good pass rusher, He's he's gotten better
- 5:07Speaker 3: at it. That's talking to some people in pro personnel.
- 5:09Speaker 3: He's a really good run defender. He was drafted to
- 5:12Speaker 3: play the left defensive end for the Bills and their
- 5:15Speaker 3: forty three front or Sean McDermott. So here this is
- 5:18Speaker 3: a little different where they Eagles run an odd man front.
- 5:21Speaker 3: And you know, you you made a good point when
- 5:23Speaker 3: we talked about him earlier this week, is that he
- 5:28Speaker 3: could play a nickel. You could play him inside if
- 5:30Speaker 3: you want. Now, obviously you have to take somebody off
- 5:31Speaker 3: the field. But he's It's a depth sign, is what
- 5:33Speaker 3: he is. It's a depth signing. We'll see if he
- 5:35Speaker 3: could push because right now they know who the four
- 5:39Speaker 3: edges are, Grenard, Hunt, Smith and Epiquetty the only dress
- 5:43Speaker 3: for so unless someone gets hurt, that's it.
- 5:46Speaker 4: The other guy is not gonna play.
- 5:47Speaker 3: He's going to be an active So honestly, Epinessa makes
- 5:52Speaker 3: way more sense to be in the practice squad, you know.
- 5:55Speaker 4: And yeah, so we'll see what happensolutely, we'll see what happens.
- 5:58Speaker 1: All right, Let's start our discussion with with a little
- 6:01Speaker 1: bit of a carryover for anybody who may not have
- 6:03Speaker 1: caught yet corner or nickel that we did in the
- 6:06Speaker 1: last podcast and any of our conversation about Cooper to
- 6:10Speaker 1: gen but Cooper to Gene is gonna be a safety
- 6:12Speaker 1: slash nickel this year. And I suppose theoretically at him
- 6:16Speaker 1: he could play really well at safety, and then maybe
- 6:20Speaker 1: they really like what they see. This is a hypothetical
- 6:23Speaker 1: based on the conversation of contract. Right, Let's say they
- 6:25Speaker 1: really like what they see out of a Michael Carter
- 6:28Speaker 1: junior or a mac McWilliams. There's somebody in that nickelback
- 6:31Speaker 1: spot for the following year they like, and they want
- 6:35Speaker 1: to keep Cooper to Gene at safety next to Macouba.
- 6:40Speaker 1: What kind of contract would that help the Eagles financially?
- 6:44Speaker 1: Because now you're we talked about his comp being Kyle
- 6:46Speaker 1: Hamilton because he can play safety and nickel, and Hamilton's
- 6:50Speaker 1: at twenty five million a year kind of player. But
- 6:52Speaker 1: if he was just a safety, and a really good
- 6:54Speaker 1: one at that, then he falls into you know, top
- 6:58Speaker 1: ten safety. Does that really helped the Eagles from a
- 7:01Speaker 1: contract standpoint? And it could, right, because you know your
- 7:04Speaker 1: top three or four safeties you'rre Derwin James or Kyle
- 7:07Speaker 1: Hamilton's Antoine Winfield are versatile guys who play safety nickels
- 7:12Speaker 1: all around. So you're probably looking at something like that,
- 7:16Speaker 1: and that's still twenty one to twenty five million. And
- 7:20Speaker 1: even if you were just saying Cooper you're just gonna
- 7:22Speaker 1: play safety, you get into like eighteen to twenty million.
- 7:25Speaker 2: So while that might be different from.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Thirty, you won't get that. But here's the thing, Derwin
- 7:31Speaker 4: James just got his extension done, right. It was a
- 7:33Speaker 4: little bit. It's interesting how this works with the agents.
- 7:36Speaker 3: So Hal Hamilton got twenty five point one million, Joe
- 7:39Speaker 3: and James got twenty five point two million. YEP average
- 7:43Speaker 3: per season or ap y average per year, right, not
- 7:47Speaker 3: all contracts.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Guy, he does move around a lot too. He might
- 7:51Speaker 2: follow down he plays.
- 7:52Speaker 3: He'll see him play as almost a linebacker. Sometimes he'll
- 7:54Speaker 3: play up.
- 7:55Speaker 4: We'll play back.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Right, he's a.
- 7:57Speaker 3: Safety, and he's a safety, and he's not cope in
- 7:59Speaker 3: terms of move of movement or the way that you
- 8:01Speaker 3: would use him. So to me, he's got to get
- 8:06Speaker 3: He's in the twenty five plus range, Coop if they
- 8:09Speaker 3: if they get one done after the season, plus you
- 8:11Speaker 3: have to see the other shafeties that get done.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Right, So he's not getting thirty, there's no way. He's
- 8:18Speaker 4: just he's not corner's.
- 8:19Speaker 3: You can't justify paying him that it's it's not easy,
- 8:21Speaker 3: but let's get back to what this looks like for
- 8:24Speaker 3: the future.
- 8:25Speaker 5: So and Vick. Look, it's really Vic's call about where he.
- 8:30Speaker 4: Plays in twenty seven and beyond.
- 8:31Speaker 3: So he's a safety, and then Nicol this season, the
- 8:34Speaker 3: snap counts will help them determine when they structure the
- 8:37Speaker 3: contract where he played the most, and you know, you
- 8:39Speaker 3: look at the comps and you go from there. Then
- 8:42Speaker 3: you got mccooba's in year two of his four year deal, yep,
- 8:45Speaker 3: obviously a big year for him.
- 8:47Speaker 4: He's got to stay healthy.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Then you got Marcus Eps's on a one year deal.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Michael Carter got the pickup, which we told you he
- 8:52Speaker 3: was going to get.
- 8:54Speaker 4: He took a shave he had to.
- 8:55Speaker 3: He's going to make over ten million to be a
- 8:56Speaker 3: backup or you're not coming back at that number, and
- 9:00Speaker 3: they they.
- 9:01Speaker 4: Shortened it up a little bit. Michael Carter will make.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Let's see two point two four million, and they guarantee,
- 9:14Speaker 3: they guaranteed at signing one point four to five million,
- 9:19Speaker 3: So he's going to be on the team most likely.
- 9:21Speaker 1: And by the way, that's a drastic reduction from what
- 9:24Speaker 1: the original contract called.
- 9:25Speaker 4: From Oh he was gonna make over ten million. This
- 9:27Speaker 4: is yeah, right right.
- 9:29Speaker 3: They leveraged because there was very little guaranteed. Yeah, so yeah,
- 9:34Speaker 3: we told you this a year ago that he's not
- 9:36Speaker 3: coming back anywhere close to that number.
- 9:38Speaker 4: Now here's the thing.
- 9:40Speaker 3: You got Marcus Epps, a veteran who doesn't really have
- 9:44Speaker 3: Michael Carter's versatility. Carter could play nickel, or he could
- 9:46Speaker 3: play safety, and they cross train him to play safety,
- 9:50Speaker 3: which he played in.
- 9:51Speaker 4: College at Duke.
- 9:53Speaker 3: I know it sounds obviously EPs is the start of
- 9:55Speaker 3: going in. I'm not rolling out Carter beating him. We'll
- 9:57Speaker 3: talk more about that when we talk about depth charts
- 9:59Speaker 3: closer or a training camp in about a month or so. Ye.
- 10:03Speaker 4: Apps.
- 10:03Speaker 3: By the way, one year deal worth one point five
- 10:05Speaker 3: to five million. The guarantee is very small. Came in
- 10:08Speaker 3: the signing bonus at one point two to five of
- 10:11Speaker 3: one hundred and twenty five thousand, which is comical.
- 10:14Speaker 4: The comical part is four year void on a deal
- 10:17Speaker 4: that's so late. I just I love it. Yeah, that
- 10:19Speaker 4: is interesting to me.
- 10:21Speaker 1: That makes him one of those guys who could definitely
- 10:23Speaker 1: get I guess it would be released that.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Cut down at the UH at the end of the
- 10:28Speaker 2: camp and then brought back to the practice.
- 10:30Speaker 5: Squad because yeah, the guarantee is small squad salary.
- 10:32Speaker 4: Yeah, we'll see how he played with them. And he
- 10:34Speaker 4: is thirty.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Let's not forget he's not the same player he once was. Yep,
- 10:38Speaker 3: he did turn thirty in late January. And after that,
- 10:42Speaker 3: you know, GJ. Gray is a special teamer. Colebysznowski he
- 10:46Speaker 3: was a seventh rounder. Andre Sam's there, but really, contractually,
- 10:49Speaker 3: go looking at the future past the season. It's Coop
- 10:54Speaker 3: potentially u being a safety in twenty seven and beyond,
- 11:00Speaker 3: and we won't know. We won't know whether it'll be
- 11:03Speaker 3: he'll be a one position player, two position player. And
- 11:07Speaker 3: then obviously it's mccuba. You know what's interesting about maccuba
- 11:11Speaker 3: and Grego Salt TOLDA says when he played at Clemson,
- 11:14Speaker 3: he was a pretty good nickel. Greg thought he moved
- 11:16Speaker 3: very well. That's a suggestion they're going to change positions.
- 11:19Speaker 3: But you never know the mind of Vic Fangiel how
- 11:22Speaker 3: it works. He sees stuff no one else sees. Yes,
- 11:25Speaker 3: Zach Bonne wants an all time call by Vic.
- 11:29Speaker 4: No one saw that at all.
- 11:30Speaker 3: And playing linebacker, so you never know, So that's just
- 11:33Speaker 3: something to keep in the back of our minds. Here, Uh,
- 11:38Speaker 3: what I'm gonna look you know, I'm gonna look at
- 11:40Speaker 3: cause of this stuff with vic A training camp, I'm
- 11:41Speaker 3: gonna look for that stuff. Does he give does he
- 11:44Speaker 3: give mccooba some snaps at at Nickel?
- 11:47Speaker 4: Who knows?
- 11:47Speaker 3: You know, if if Michael Carter is kicking ass, you know,
- 11:52Speaker 3: if he's doing well, safety, does he give does he
- 11:54Speaker 3: give mccuba a couple of snaps at Nickel?
- 11:56Speaker 4: You never know.
- 11:57Speaker 1: It's interesting that when mccooba transferred to Texas, they use
- 12:00Speaker 1: him as a more conventional safety and didn't sort of
- 12:03Speaker 1: expand that safety nickel role for him like Clemson did.
- 12:05Speaker 1: I wonder, you know, not in maybe Texas had a
- 12:08Speaker 1: lot of talent in their back end and didn't have to,
- 12:10Speaker 1: But I always thought that was really interesting that they
- 12:12Speaker 1: didn't decide to do that. And then you know, you've
- 12:16Speaker 1: got four years, well this is year two of mccouba, yep,
- 12:18Speaker 1: so you really wouldn't even have to start to think
- 12:21Speaker 1: about paying him for the long term until the end
- 12:23Speaker 1: of twenty and twenty seven, and by then he's got
- 12:26Speaker 1: to improve and not only that he's held down that
- 12:29Speaker 1: starting job.
- 12:30Speaker 2: But stayed healthy.
- 12:31Speaker 1: But yeah, this is a position that just right now
- 12:34Speaker 1: is very cost efficient for that it has to because
- 12:36Speaker 1: they're paying now now.
- 12:37Speaker 4: It is right, But.
- 12:40Speaker 5: It could look it could it could go so many
- 12:42Speaker 5: different ways.
- 12:43Speaker 3: It could be really really cool, look great if Coop
- 12:47Speaker 3: takes the safety and the belief is it will look good,
- 12:50Speaker 3: he'll play it well there, but it doesn't work well,
- 12:53Speaker 3: it's a quagmire again. It's like, Okay, what do they
- 12:55Speaker 3: really have mccoba who he told you Personal people in
- 12:58Speaker 3: the league thought mcouba is an nickel and he's a
- 13:01Speaker 3: he's a safety in Nichol's body.
- 13:02Speaker 4: He just doesn't. He's not. He's just not built like
- 13:07Speaker 4: a safety. It's not what you want.
- 13:09Speaker 3: But he moves really well and we'll see what happens.
- 13:13Speaker 3: It's it's it's if you want to call this position
- 13:15Speaker 3: of weakness, it's it wouldn't be unfair, but you just
- 13:19Speaker 3: have to see how it plays out. Because Coop may
- 13:21Speaker 3: being i mean may be an all pro, who the
- 13:22Speaker 3: hell knows a guy's freak and Macouba was a second
- 13:26Speaker 3: round pick, pretty good athlete versatility. Let me ask you this,
- 13:30Speaker 3: since this is the last show until we get We're
- 13:33Speaker 3: next week is our NFC East Draft.
- 13:36Speaker 4: We're gonna do that next week. How good could this
- 13:40Speaker 4: defense be?
- 13:41Speaker 2: Oh?
- 13:41Speaker 1: I you know that our series where we've explored these
- 13:44Speaker 1: contracts right has made me really look deeply at the
- 13:48Speaker 1: Eagles defense, which I already thought was going to be
- 13:50Speaker 1: pretty good. But when you go through so many guys
- 13:53Speaker 1: where you think have the ability, if they just have
- 13:56Speaker 1: the same kind of year as last year to really
- 13:59Speaker 1: cash in and reset the market or be an impact player,
- 14:02Speaker 1: and you add Rekwell into it, this defense could be
- 14:06Speaker 1: really really good. I think it has the potential to
- 14:10Speaker 1: play more like the team that we saw against the
- 14:14Speaker 1: Packers and Lions last year back to back weeks, where
- 14:17Speaker 1: those teams were just flum mixed.
- 14:18Speaker 2: I mean, if you remember those games, now, the Eagles.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Offense struggle, they got the oh god, I think the
- 14:25Speaker 1: Packers only scored nine points. I forget, I'll go look
- 14:28Speaker 1: real quickly with the scores. But it was like, you know,
- 14:32Speaker 1: the Rams scored as much as the Eagles and their
- 14:34Speaker 1: opponents score in one week in those in those two games,
- 14:37Speaker 1: so it was their defense was just unbelievable.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Yeah, they beat the Packers ten to seven, and they
- 14:42Speaker 2: beat the Lions sixteen to nine. I mean that that
- 14:45Speaker 2: to me is.
- 14:49Speaker 1: I don't want to say the Eagles are only going
- 14:51Speaker 1: to allow eight points a game, but I just think
- 14:53Speaker 1: that they've got.
- 14:53Speaker 2: A really good, deep collection of players.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Up front in the back end. A lot of this
- 14:59Speaker 1: is the the nonrequel and coming here and being a steadying,
- 15:03Speaker 1: stabilizing force. But I don't expect him to regress too much.
- 15:07Speaker 1: I mean, even if he's inconsistent like last year, that's
- 15:09Speaker 1: still better than Dori Jackson, right. I do think that
- 15:14Speaker 1: Jihad Campbell brings things to the defense that Nikobe Dean doesn't,
- 15:18Speaker 1: but also lacks some of the things that Nikobe Dean had,
- 15:22Speaker 1: you know, the building to stake downhill. Yeah, but he's
- 15:25Speaker 1: got a lot of time to grow, so I think
- 15:27Speaker 1: it could be really good. I'm a little worried about
- 15:28Speaker 1: run defense, said, but I know most coaches don't care,
- 15:31Speaker 1: and the Eagles have been able to overcome some really
- 15:34Speaker 1: ugly throws sometimes of run defense. But other than that,
- 15:39Speaker 1: they should be able to rush the passer. They should
- 15:41Speaker 1: be able to narrow lanes, and the biggest thing I
- 15:44Speaker 1: think and some of the guys were talking about this
- 15:46Speaker 1: in the press conference. I think Zach Blunt said it too.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Was that they said Vic is so comfortable with his
- 15:53Speaker 1: first now that he spent the offseason thinking of new stuff.
- 15:56Speaker 2: I'm like, oh my god, don't get fangio. There's enough
- 16:00Speaker 2: time and comfort to think of new things.
- 16:02Speaker 5: Mom said that, Yes, Zack hit a great quote. I'm like,
- 16:05Speaker 5: is he just saying this is?
- 16:06Speaker 4: Believe it is? What does he mean? I would have
- 16:08Speaker 4: loved to have known.
- 16:09Speaker 3: But the only quote, Well, we'll talk again when we
- 16:11Speaker 3: will have our top questions for training camp and what
- 16:13Speaker 3: the strength loop look like. But the you've got the
- 16:18Speaker 3: injury questions about Grenard and Campbell, they're pretty significant. Grenard
- 16:22Speaker 3: coming off shoulder surgery, Campbell shoulders both, he's had them
- 16:26Speaker 3: done over the last three years.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Throw Macouba in there because he's slight a frame.
- 16:30Speaker 5: He's what he's like, you know, right right?
- 16:33Speaker 3: How could is he going to hold up? And then
- 16:35Speaker 3: you mentioned Woolen. So but the upside is tremendous. The
- 16:38Speaker 3: depth is better with Jonathan Jones now that that you're
- 16:42Speaker 3: you're upgrading a third corner.
- 16:44Speaker 5: It matters.
- 16:45Speaker 3: He's got experience. You know, we'll see how much he's
- 16:46Speaker 3: got left. And they've got tremendous depth at edge, like
- 16:50Speaker 3: if everybody's healthy, like Vic has got. I know he
- 16:53Speaker 3: doesn't like substituting much, but you know what, Vic, you
- 16:57Speaker 3: can if you need to. Yep, you know, nobody needs
- 17:00Speaker 3: to get tired, because I know that was a problem
- 17:03Speaker 3: for the forty nine ers.
- 17:04Speaker 4: In the Super Bowl run in twenty twelve.
- 17:06Speaker 3: I know they were they thought that they there are
- 17:08Speaker 3: people in their front office, remember that they thought that
- 17:11Speaker 3: the guys got gas late in the season against.
- 17:13Speaker 4: Baltimore in particular and super Bowl.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Right, So we'll see what happens, but they could have
- 17:18Speaker 3: They certainly have the makers of elite defense. Not if
- 17:22Speaker 3: real weaknesses, like real weaknesses other than injury and okay,
- 17:27Speaker 3: in consistency, there's I don't really see a weakness on
- 17:30Speaker 3: the defense.
- 17:30Speaker 2: I would agree with you on that.
- 17:32Speaker 5: I will.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Let's close this off because now I want to wrap
- 17:35Speaker 2: up this podcast series with a question for you.

- 18:57Speaker 2: Twenty one and up. So now that we've done on.
- 19:00Speaker 1: This series, give me two guys who popped up in
- 19:03Speaker 1: your mind that no matter what, you have a real
- 19:06Speaker 1: you can't see them back on the team in twenty
- 19:08Speaker 1: twenty seven, even if they.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Oh on defense anywhere, no anywhere.
- 19:14Speaker 5: Can I take low hanging fruit Jonathan Jones.
- 19:19Speaker 1: That's of the starters, Yes, starters or very key situational players.
- 19:30Speaker 4: Tyler Steen would be one. I mean.
- 19:33Speaker 5: He could go anywhere from getting extension to walking walking.
- 19:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Plus, I mean you gotta get let's let's say Jurgens
- 19:40Speaker 1: is fine and has a good bound a decent year.
- 19:42Speaker 1: You gotta get Kendall on the field somewhere by year three.
- 19:46Speaker 4: Right, So I mean they don't have to it's a
- 19:48Speaker 4: fifth round.
- 19:48Speaker 2: But I know right here, let me put.
- 19:51Speaker 4: It this way.
- 19:52Speaker 1: In each of the last I don't know how many years,
- 19:54Speaker 1: there's always been one offensive lineman on a rookie deal
- 19:57Speaker 1: or a cost efficient deal, because they've got guys on
- 20:01Speaker 1: on extensions between my lot, between lane, between Jurgons and Dickerson.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Right, So if they're all going to be back next.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Year in twenty twenty seven, then they gotta have one
- 20:09Speaker 1: cost efficient guy and it wouldn't be Steen if you
- 20:11Speaker 1: gave him an extension.
- 20:13Speaker 3: Yeah, well, let's put guys on my raider that could
- 20:18Speaker 3: who could potentially leave it would be Steen would be one.
- 20:21Speaker 5: Okay, we'll see how Howie handles his situation.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Top two. Yeah, I mean there's plenty of them.
- 20:26Speaker 3: He won. Dickerson's got to be up there because of
- 20:30Speaker 3: his because of his his major injury history.
- 20:33Speaker 4: They can get out of it.
- 20:34Speaker 3: Where they can't get out of durgun'st deal without a
- 20:37Speaker 3: major cap impact after the season.
- 20:39Speaker 4: They gotta wait till after twenty seven.
- 20:41Speaker 2: That's not a bad one. I put others ahead of him,
- 20:43Speaker 2: but that's not bad.
- 20:43Speaker 4: Okay.
- 20:43Speaker 5: Well, Lane is obvious because that's the obvious.
- 20:46Speaker 4: That's up to him.
- 20:47Speaker 3: Well, I mean okay, all right, I mean I could
- 20:49Speaker 3: have taken him that that that's an obvious one.
- 20:52Speaker 5: Who did you say again, who's Nane Johnson?
- 20:54Speaker 4: Lane?
- 20:55Speaker 2: No, that's a good one. It's not obvious because if
- 20:57Speaker 2: he wants to come back, he'll come back.
- 20:59Speaker 4: No that No, Well, that's my point. He could come
- 21:01Speaker 4: back if he wants. I just he goes year to year.
- 21:03Speaker 2: But this is like, who is not coming back no
- 21:06Speaker 2: matter what.
- 21:07Speaker 3: That's what I'm it's it's honestly, it's it's I don't
- 21:10Speaker 3: see that no matter what.
- 21:12Speaker 1: I just don't see how they bring a Jomo back
- 21:15Speaker 1: at this point. If the Carter, if they're gonna they
- 21:17Speaker 1: got David don we're gonna do Carter. I just I
- 21:20Speaker 1: think it's gonna be very, very difficult.
- 21:22Speaker 2: That would be my number one guy.
- 21:23Speaker 4: That's a good one. That'd be. It'll be really tough.
- 21:26Speaker 3: And if it makes especially tough, if Woolen shocks made
- 21:30Speaker 3: he balls out and wear, that would have been my
- 21:32Speaker 3: number two guy, by the way, But then Jomo's gone. Yeah,
- 21:36Speaker 3: now remember o Jomo Jomo did. He did change representation.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 21:42Speaker 3: Doesn't mean he's getting a new deal wang Ship did
- 21:44Speaker 3: last summer. He didn't get a new deal, different money. Obviously,
- 21:48Speaker 3: Jomo is gonna make much more money. But back to
- 21:50Speaker 3: what we said, to finish this out, you can't pay everybody.
- 21:53Speaker 4: Yep. It's gonna be so hard. I don't know how.
- 21:56Speaker 3: It's gotta be painful. It's like you they they walk
- 21:58Speaker 3: away from Milliwilliams. You know they couldn't compete because they'd
- 22:01Speaker 3: so many guys. That's really why they did it. Plush
- 22:03Speaker 3: the cash bend, as we've been talking about for last years.
- 22:06Speaker 3: It was going to be down there. There's only so
- 22:08Speaker 3: much you could spend. Yep caps one thing, but cash
- 22:11Speaker 3: allocation is everything. That's the number one thing for running
- 22:13Speaker 3: a football team. And you can't be you can't have
- 22:16Speaker 3: a five hundred million dollar team.
- 22:18Speaker 4: You just can't. Can't.
- 22:19Speaker 5: You can't do it.
- 22:21Speaker 3: You're not can put out a half a billion dollars
- 22:22Speaker 3: in contracts here. You just cannot pay everybody.
- 22:25Speaker 1: That is true, all right, this has been a really
- 22:28Speaker 1: fun series. I already got some feedback even on Football
- 22:32Speaker 1: at four saying how we've been killing it during the
- 22:36Speaker 1: contract series. I hope everybody has a better understanding of
- 22:39Speaker 1: what the contracts mean for individual players, for not just now,
- 22:43Speaker 1: but for the future and the decisions that the Eagles
- 22:46Speaker 1: will have to make. I know, next week, Adam, we're
- 22:49Speaker 1: going to have our annual NFC East Draft podcast series
- 22:53Speaker 1: where we draft a team for both offense and defense
- 22:56Speaker 1: just from NFC East players, and then we're also going
- 22:59Speaker 1: to do a look at some of the players who
- 23:01Speaker 1: are gonna enter training camp under the rate, you know,
- 23:03Speaker 1: kind of the guys who are under pressure and we're
- 23:05Speaker 1: gonna say why it's really important to perform in training
- 23:08Speaker 1: camp and things like that, so we'll have a lot
- 23:09Speaker 1: of great content. And soon after that we are going
- 23:12Speaker 1: to have Greg Cosel back with us to do his
- 23:15Speaker 1: tape breakdown of NFC teams as we preview the NFC
- 23:19Speaker 1: East with training camp just a few weeks away, I
- 23:22Speaker 1: mean not too many, not too close, four four weeks away.
- 23:25Speaker 1: By the time we get to Greg Cosell, it'll be
- 23:27Speaker 1: even sooner than that.
- 23:28Speaker 4: So love it.
- 23:30Speaker 2: God, yeah, love it.
- 23:31Speaker 4: Looking forward to it me too.
- 23:33Speaker 2: That's gonna do it for this episode of Inside the
- 23:35Speaker 2: Birds of the Leading Podcast.
- 23:37Speaker 1: And Eagles Intel. As always, we thank you for flying
- 23:40Speaker 1: with us Inside the Birds
