- 0:00I'm too busy. How do I find time to pray?
- 0:02He's like, where do you find time to breathe?
- 0:04Because that's important. That's how important prayer is
- 0:08is is important. As your heart is beating in your
- 0:10chest and the breath is necessary to live, so isn't
- 0:14prayer. This is Virtuous Leaders, the
- 0:18podcast for based Catholics who will speak truth, do good or die
- 0:21try. Here's the show.
- 0:28So I am the director of digital evangelization for Family Rosary
- 0:34and Catholic Mom. That Catholic mom is part of
- 0:37Family Rosary. OK, what?
- 0:40What exactly does that entail? I am in charge of all of the the
- 0:47digital realm. I tell people I've figured out
- 0:50how to get paid to play on Facebook.
- 0:53So social media, websites, digital content are downloads.
- 0:58I'm just kind of in charge of overseeing all of that.
- 1:02What is the mission of Catholic Mall?
- 1:05It's to support women in their in every stage of their
- 1:10motherhood and in every place of their spirituality.
- 1:14So wherever you are in your spirituality, we're there to
- 1:18support you. We have lots of online
- 1:20resources. We are a digital resource
- 1:22primarily and we're there to support mothers and families.
- 1:27Really. We're kind of moving towards the
- 1:30towards supporting the entire family.
- 1:34How do you provide that support? We provide that through our
- 1:38digital resources. We have, we have 140
- 1:43contributors who send us articles and we use those
- 1:47articles to cover all of the the gamut of whatever a mom may
- 1:51experience in her life. We also have what's called
- 1:54Sunday gospel activities and family activities that go
- 1:57together with the the gospel each week and those are all
- 2:02provided for free. We have an incredible team.
- 2:06Barb Siskewic is our editor. She is in charge of getting
- 2:10these articles from the 140 contributors, men and women,
- 2:15mostly women, but we have some dads who contribute as well, as
- 2:18well as some religious sisters. Maria Johnson is our Meteor
- 2:22editor, Margaret Dwyer Hogan is our business manager and
- 2:26Victoria Hassan is our social media specialist.
- 2:30So put a lot of thought into what are the biggest challenges
- 2:33facing young Catholic parents in order to help them address it.
- 2:37Because I think they have the most important job in the world.
- 2:40I mean, you almost have some sense of what the biggest
- 2:42challenge is. I think part of the challenge is
- 2:46that the the world is no longer oriented toward a Christian way
- 2:53of thinking, especially a Catholic way of thinking.
- 2:56And many of the young parents were catechized themselves.
- 3:01So they, you know, maybe have been away from the faith.
- 3:04And then suddenly they're in charge of this little person or
- 3:06persons and they realize, Oh my goodness, how do I do this
- 3:09alone? And they go something in them
- 3:12that Holy Spirit that they didn't even know, perhaps lives
- 3:16within them, tugs at their heart.
- 3:17And they start, they start to think, well, I, I'm going to at
- 3:22least try the faith. And so I think a lot of the, the
- 3:26challenges come, obviously the financial and, and worrying
- 3:31about our children, worrying about this world and trying to
- 3:34figure out where to turn. And one of the things I've kind
- 3:36of noticed myself is that we look at prayer as the thing that
- 3:41we'll go to when we have it all figured out.
- 3:43And we worry about feeding our families clothing and housing
- 3:47them. And that seems to be the most
- 3:49important and, and immediate needs.
- 3:50And of course, those are important.
- 3:52But I think that our mindset has kind of shifted from including
- 3:57God and all of that because he promises to provide for us, to
- 4:00support us, to be there. Like he's given us life and he
- 4:04doesn't just abandoned us, he's with us every moment.
- 4:07But I, I, I know I myself as a young mom used to say, I'll pray
- 4:11when I'm old and I have time and realizing that I need God now in
- 4:17the here and now and in that daily challenge.
- 4:20And so I think we, we try to help families moms understand
- 4:25that God wants to walk with you in this journey and you are
- 4:28truly never alone. Not only is God with you, but so
- 4:31isn't Catholic mom. You started with the case of
- 4:34someone who maybe he's not practicing as much and they're
- 4:37getting support with that, but what about the other end of the
- 4:40spectrum? Someone who's really committed
- 4:42to their faith is the most important thing to them and they
- 4:45want to live there. They want to raise their
- 4:47children in the faith. What's the biggest challenge
- 4:49that they face? Maybe finding the resources that
- 4:54they need, maybe finding the time like just everyone is so
- 4:58busy. One of the things I where
- 5:00Catholic mom is also part of family rosary and one of the the
- 5:05beauties of praying the rosary together as a family is you get
- 5:0820 minutes of family time that maybe you wouldn't normally get
- 5:12because you're so busy. You know, you're maybe you're
- 5:15running the child one place and your husband or your spouse is
- 5:18running the child another place and you kind of meet together
- 5:23for dinner. I always encourage people to do
- 5:25grace at meals, grace before bed, like finding that time to
- 5:30bring prayer. And I think the challenge is not
- 5:33knowing what to pray, maybe not knowing, not finding the time to
- 5:37pray and trying to figure out, you know, how can I fit this
- 5:40prayer into our daily life when we're so busy?
- 5:43Father Patrick Peyton, the founder of family rosary, of
- 5:47which now Catholic mom has become a part, when he was asked
- 5:51how, you know, I'm too busy, How do I find time to pray?
- 5:54He's like, where do you find time to breathe?
- 5:56Because that's important. That's how important prayer is,
- 6:00is, is important as your heart is beating in your chest and the
- 6:03breath is necessary to live. So isn't prayer.
- 6:08OK, how much of A how much of a challenge is is the overwhelm of
- 6:15staying staying busy with the with the little kids and feeling
- 6:18socially isolated, feeling like a missionary sit behind an
- 6:22alliance with no support. I think, I think that's A1
- 6:26culturally it just because of people move around so much in
- 6:28the US and then and we know the devil likes to attack through
- 6:31isolation. Yeah, that's what we why on
- 6:35social media, we're called the Catholic mom community because
- 6:39we want to help a moms, young moms who are home or again, that
- 6:44feeling of isolation, as you mentioned, know that they're not
- 6:47alone. And that this is the the beauty
- 6:50of living in a digital age is that we can reach out to people,
- 6:54real people behind those computers, the Catholic mom team
- 6:59are real human beings who are moms, grand moms who love our
- 7:05faith, who are, who experience that that isolation themselves
- 7:10that, you know, one of I remember being a young mom and
- 7:13somebody saying to me, the days are long, but the years are
- 7:17short. And I didn't understand that
- 7:19until I was much older. And now I see that.
- 7:22But in the trenches, in that moment, it feels like this is
- 7:26never going to end and you feel incapable and worried.
- 7:31And that's what Catholic Mom is there for.
- 7:34We have thousands because Lisa Hendy is the is the founder of
- 7:40Catholic Mom and that was over 20 years ago and she wanted
- 7:44families and moms to feel supported.
- 7:46So we have thousands of articles all and every again, every
- 7:51aspect of motherhood you can think about.
- 7:53But we're also still here. We're still behind that
- 7:57computer. And you can e-mail us.
- 7:58You can reach to out to us on social media and if we don't
- 8:02have an article or some way to support you, we go to our 140
- 8:07contributors and say, hey, we have this mom with this this
- 8:10question, how can we support her?
- 8:12And we are always really blessed to find somebody who's able to
- 8:15speak to whatever a mom is dealing with.
- 8:19Days along, but the years are short below that it it occurs to
- 8:23me that y'all have a really big asset here with that treasure
- 8:26trove of articles. Do you have any thoughts of how
- 8:30to really maximize the effectiveness of that using, I
- 8:34don't know, perhaps AI technology or other means?
- 8:38Well, right now we're looking to, we've been putting them on
- 8:42to audio digests. We know that the way that people
- 8:48kind of consume, consume media, consume information now is more
- 8:54through their ears than through their eyes.
- 8:56So we have been actually working with, we started, we're kind of
- 9:00doing a hybrid of looking at using audio AI voices and the
- 9:05technology of putting the article in and getting an audio
- 9:09out. But we also have been doing real
- 9:12life voices, recording these ourselves because there's just
- 9:16something about the, the authenticity of Catholic Mom
- 9:19that we don't want to lose. We want people to know that not
- 9:22only were there real people behind writing these articles,
- 9:25but here we are speaking them to you to bring you comfort,
- 9:29support. So we do have a great resource,
- 9:32a great searchable. We have a great way of searching
- 9:37to find the article, the database.
- 9:39That's the word I'm looking for a great searchable database.
- 9:42And of course, this technology changes.
- 9:44That's part of my job as the director of digital
- 9:46evangelization is to keep up on what's available.
- 9:50How can we support families? How can we make sure they're
- 9:54getting the resources that they need in that daily walk of
- 9:59motherhood? And more importantly, of course,
- 10:01as as a family and family rosaries, we look to help
- 10:06support people in. We kind of encourage people for
- 10:09that family prayer, especially the rosary.
- 10:12So we're kind of bringing these two beautiful assets together to
- 10:17kind of connect with the whole person.
- 10:21Yeah, I was thinking if it would be interesting to have sort of
- 10:24AI jab bot that mom can ask a question to and then it draws on
- 10:28the Catholic mom articles for a response.
- 10:32As much as I am a big fan of AII, still feel like when it
- 10:36comes to talking to a new mom, we want to make sure she has a
- 10:40person to to really connect with.
- 10:44So I don't think that is in our future because I don't think the
- 10:50technology is the place where we can control enough of what it's
- 10:53going to pull from and what it's going to say.
- 10:56So for us, I still think coming to our social media or sending
- 11:01us an e-mail and getting a response from and a human is
- 11:05still the best way to deal with really supporting mothers in
- 11:09their in their vocation. Speaking of the importance of
- 11:13connecting with a real human, totally agree with that.
- 11:16What are your thoughts? What are your thoughts in terms
- 11:18of offering in person support? Right now we have a a smaller
- 11:27team and again, Catholic mom was started as a digital asset and
- 11:31we really feel that's where our strength is as part of family
- 11:35rosary. We do have an outreach
- 11:38department. We have a wonderful director of,
- 11:41of outreach, Craig Dyke and he, he, he, we have spoken at length
- 11:48with the team, the Catholic mom team and the family rosary team
- 11:50about what that will look like. Right now we have that team, the
- 11:56outreach team is able to, to go to schools, to go to churches,
- 12:00to make presentations. Craig and his wife Amy Amy is
- 12:05our director of the Father Peyton Center.
- 12:07They also have a beautiful marriage ministry that is being
- 12:12formulated even deeper to be able to help through family
- 12:15rosary and again shared on to Catholic mom.
- 12:19So there are ways that Catholic mom will be supporting the in
- 12:23person, but as a as a hold, catholicmom.com will remain a
- 12:27digital resource. Perhaps maybe in the future
- 12:30we'll kind of break, break into kind of a networking, maybe
- 12:33using some of the sub using sub stack or, you know, whatever
- 12:37technology comes next. A mighty network so that we can
- 12:41really connect. But right now our team is small
- 12:44and and just really getting formulated about a year ago as
- 12:47the team that we are now it'd. Be great to hear a success
- 12:52story. Is there anything you particular
- 12:54you'd like to highlight? Well, I know that we will.
- 13:01I can say that last year we brought some of the 140
- 13:05contributors together for an in person retreat.
- 13:08We wanted to support they write for for free and we wanted to
- 13:11show our gratitude, but also support them in that in that
- 13:15work that they do. And it was really amazing to
- 13:19have them all there in person. We had about 35 of them come.
- 13:24It's with the middle of the winter in New England.
- 13:26Maybe not our best planning. We're moving it to June next
- 13:29time. I think it's a little bit easier
- 13:31to get to. But to hear them talk about how
- 13:34they became writers, they contributed to this resource
- 13:37because of the of what they found, the support they found
- 13:42when they went there, whether it be miscarriage or a troubled
- 13:47marriage or a child with special needs, just the the general.
- 13:53How do I live this faith in my everyday ordinary life?
- 13:58How do you fit in prayer? What does that look like?
- 14:01How do you take God on vacation with you?
- 14:04Like all of these different ways that we've been sharing our
- 14:08hearts and sharing our stories to see these contributors who
- 14:12have were once consumers and followers to see that that to me
- 14:18is is the greatest success. When you see somebody touched by
- 14:22what you're doing so much that they want to be become a part of
- 14:26a volunteering to to help others in that same way.
- 14:30The other thing that we do is the Sunday Gospel activities.
- 14:33And again, these run mostly for the school year and they are
- 14:39their coloring pages and fill in the blanks and word searches.
- 14:43And they're not just used here in the United States.
- 14:47Holy Cross Family Ministries is 28 ministry centers across 18
- 14:51countries. And it's really neat to see
- 14:55these these resources be used in churches and parishes and homes
- 15:00literally across the globe. So we know that we're helping
- 15:05families kind of get an even richer experience from Mass.
- 15:10Not that not that you can outdo the the Eucharist in any way,
- 15:13shape or form, but to be able to have discussions with their
- 15:18children about what happened in the Gospel and give them
- 15:21activities that deepen their faith.
- 15:23That has also been, I think one of the greatest successes and
- 15:26the reason that Lisa Hendy started Catholic Mom was to
- 15:29start to provide these Sunday gospel activities.
- 15:32So we're talking over 20 years of helping families on Sundays
- 15:36connect with the Lord in a in a deeper way.
- 15:41Thanks for what you do, Allison. Oh my goodness, my I feel like
- 15:45it's every day is a pinch me moment that I I get to do this
- 15:49is truly a gift from God and the whole team feels that way that
- 15:55we realize that for whatever reason, the Lord has put us here
- 15:59and given us this opportunity to support families in their
- 16:03Catholic faith. Take it very seriously.
- 16:05At Holy Cross Family Ministries, our president, Father Fred
- 16:09Jenga, we have we he make sure prayer is entrenched in the work
- 16:13that we do. We have a weekly teen rosary and
- 16:16a weekly teen mass. We have mass every day.
- 16:19In fact, people are able to follow the masses that we have,
- 16:22They're on YouTube, family Rosary, YouTube every day at
- 16:26noon Eastern Time, and the rosary precedes that at 11:30
- 16:30Eastern Time. Live with the priest with
- 16:32beautiful reflection. So we really do consider
- 16:37ourselves some of the most luckiest blessed people.
- 16:40And we take it very serious that we support families in their
- 16:44vocations as parents, as Catholic parents.
- 16:48And we hope that we help them find ways and time to pray
- 16:51together, especially the Rosary. Thank you.
- 16:57Thanks for listening. Please like, subscribe and share
- 16:59with your friends. See you next time.
