- 1:12Speaker 8: Oh my god, young Cease's steam song from his old
- 1:16Speaker 8: radio days right here. Actually wasn't even the studio, but uh,
- 1:21Speaker 8: you were down the hall a little bit then.
- 1:24Speaker 7: I don't remember.
- 1:25Speaker 8: I don't either, but I know it wasn't he I
- 1:27Speaker 8: mean eventually it was, but but you were, you were
- 1:31Speaker 8: down the hall a little bit way down the hall.
- 1:35Speaker 4: Uh man.
- 1:36Speaker 8: People still, I mean, you're a legend. People still talk
- 1:40Speaker 8: about that show. It's like Saturday Mornings with.
- 1:42Speaker 7: Ce let people walk. Are you still on the radio
- 1:45Speaker 7: and Saturday years?
- 1:47Speaker 2: No?
- 1:47Speaker 4: I get I get asked, Hey, you're on TV? Right? Well, well,
- 1:54Speaker 4: you know sort of, I'm in radio.
- 1:56Speaker 8: I've figured out early I had a I had a
- 1:59Speaker 8: face for radio.
- 2:00Speaker 7: So at least no one consult me anymore. Hey your grubbs?
- 2:06Speaker 4: Did they really?
- 2:09Speaker 7: And only the three of us understood that.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Who's do you do? You? You right for the Eagle?
- 2:15Speaker 7: Right? Well?
- 2:16Speaker 8: No, not not really, but three days a week. I'm
- 2:19Speaker 8: not I'm not nearly as versatile assessment as we.
- 2:22Speaker 5: Heard an intern over at Miremont. She happened to be
- 2:27Speaker 5: used to be at the front desk. Okay, she should
- 2:30Speaker 5: let me in Okay, do you work for Brian Broadcast?
- 2:35Speaker 8: Yeah, one hour a week on hour a week.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Yeah, that's good with.
- 2:42Speaker 7: Three weeks vacations.
- 2:44Speaker 4: What's her what's her name?
- 2:46Speaker 5: Uh, don't put me off.
- 2:48Speaker 4: Okay, that's that's okay.
- 2:50Speaker 8: Well, so so for for future for for future reference,
- 2:55Speaker 8: all of our front desk girls are names Shannon Brown.
- 2:58Speaker 4: Okay, so what we refer to Shannon Brown here?
- 3:02Speaker 8: We know we're referring to our receptionist, Okay, okay. And
- 3:07Speaker 8: it's just like a and m athletic directors and coaches.
- 3:11Speaker 8: It would take me hours to try to go through
- 3:14Speaker 8: and figure out how many Shannon Brown's have been here
- 3:17Speaker 8: in my thirty three years. And and I don't know how.
- 3:21Speaker 8: You know, it'd take a while to go through the
- 3:23Speaker 8: athletic directors too.
- 3:24Speaker 5: Yeah, well I could probably go through the list. I mean,
- 3:27Speaker 5: but yeah, I mean may have to go back. There's
- 3:30Speaker 5: Wally has gone, Wally Groff was it kind of went
- 3:34Speaker 5: pretty rapid fire a lot ways Bill Burn right after Wally, Right.
- 3:43Speaker 4: I mean John, I go back to John David.
- 3:45Speaker 5: Crowe love John David.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:49Speaker 8: They had a great relationship. Yeah, they were, they were simpatico.
- 3:53Speaker 4: They would sit on that force. Yeah, would they.
- 3:58Speaker 5: Just bring with Shelby good friends and I just bring
- 4:02Speaker 5: his name up?
- 4:03Speaker 4: Me too, John David, me too, I did. I did
- 4:05Speaker 4: that too. Would take much to get him going.
- 4:09Speaker 5: Yeah, he talked about John David high I Q and
- 4:12Speaker 5: all kinds of stuff.
- 4:13Speaker 8: Oh my gosh, they in real love. They did not
- 4:17Speaker 8: And that was even before he fired him.
- 4:20Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, well Shellby was a little too outspoken.
- 4:23Speaker 4: Well she Shelly didn't leave him any choice. No, honestly,
- 4:26Speaker 4: he did not know.
- 4:27Speaker 7: You know, I can honestly say, go along with both
- 4:31Speaker 7: of them. Great, yeah, great, great.
- 4:34Speaker 4: Icons see you get along with everybody.
- 4:36Speaker 9: And if I wrote a book, I always remember when
- 4:39Speaker 9: she said about when they got rid of John David Crowe,
- 4:44Speaker 9: and he said, uh, some belly just missing its idiot.
- 4:48Speaker 4: You know, was there is.
- 4:50Speaker 8: There a coach sees in the passage that you just
- 4:53Speaker 8: did not get along with?
- 4:55Speaker 4: Do you remember, I'd.
- 4:57Speaker 7: Say, Tony bri and I weren't.
- 4:58Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, but he didn't get along with a
- 5:01Speaker 4: lot of people. But ask no no.
- 5:04Speaker 7: I always remember when he called all in.
- 5:07Speaker 9: Buchanan was working at the time for The Eagle, and
- 5:09Speaker 9: I get a call Monday morning and they said that Uh,
- 5:13Speaker 9: Tony Broney would like.
- 5:14Speaker 7: To talk to you, talk to you, and ol And went.
- 5:17Speaker 9: Over and he didn't like something that Olan wrote in
- 5:19Speaker 9: a game about tech about you know, his word usage.
- 5:23Speaker 8: And you know, we're wait a minute, writing something about
- 5:25Speaker 8: tech that got somebody in trouble.
- 5:27Speaker 4: And sorry, that's how I couldn't.
- 5:32Speaker 7: John David Crowe.
- 5:33Speaker 9: Was sitting there, and I knew he was just excited
- 5:35Speaker 9: to be there as I was. You know, yeah, yeah,
- 5:37Speaker 9: strictly for Tony.
- 5:40Speaker 5: Tony was the only person I used to write a
- 5:43Speaker 5: notes column, uh for CBS Sports Line, right, and really
- 5:47Speaker 5: just changed the record every week because it was all
- 5:49Speaker 5: always I mean, the same stuff over yeah, texta in
- 5:53Speaker 5: blue light another game because of this, and then the
- 5:55Speaker 5: record felt to you know this, and he was the.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Only one who read it.
- 5:59Speaker 5: I like, I'm convinced because he was not like what
- 6:02Speaker 5: I was reading.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Tom Pinder.
- 6:04Speaker 5: I would also do the Texas notes column, so Tom
- 6:06Speaker 5: Penders would rave about Bernie. Just rave, Tom, Come on,
- 6:10Speaker 5: you know, here's guarantee two wins every single year he goes.
- 6:13Speaker 5: I didn't say that.
- 6:15Speaker 9: I kind of made up with Tony Browney afterwards when
- 6:19Speaker 9: he was scouting in it that he was at one
- 6:21Speaker 9: of the conference yeah talk.
- 6:24Speaker 5: I don't think he liked me because I told him
- 6:25Speaker 5: about he sweated pasta.
- 6:27Speaker 4: I don't think I wrote it that he Here's the
- 6:29Speaker 4: deal is.
- 6:30Speaker 9: He he was not a good hire. He should not
- 6:32Speaker 9: have been hired for this. Whatever it was, it was a.
- 6:35Speaker 4: It was a terrible fit.
- 6:36Speaker 5: It was it was a no win basketball terrible hires.
- 6:41Speaker 5: Can we get through?
- 6:42Speaker 9: And so when he died, you know, somebody said, hey,
- 6:46Speaker 9: you want to write a column, So what's funny? Not
- 6:49Speaker 9: funny is but I kind of wrote a cease column.
- 6:52Speaker 9: I said the way it was, and the guy said
- 6:54Speaker 9: at the time letter said, hey, his his wife and
- 6:59Speaker 9: the kid are going to read.
- 7:00Speaker 4: Just you know, it's like, well, maybe turned it out
- 7:04Speaker 4: a little.
- 7:05Speaker 5: Sometimes it's just best to say no, well you're very wrong.
- 7:09Speaker 7: I found that out.
- 7:09Speaker 9: I should have done at that point, and luckily I said,
- 7:12Speaker 9: we made up afterwards. And you don't get me wrong.
- 7:15Speaker 9: There's luck you will hate me and that's fine. But
- 7:18Speaker 9: you know, Tony BARNI just the things. That's why I
- 7:21Speaker 9: was doing the show over at another station. That was
- 7:25Speaker 9: when I start out. I'll never forget because all of them.
- 7:27Speaker 9: I can't think old was coming. He come in laughing,
- 7:29Speaker 9: and he said, Tony Bernie goes, oh yeah, cease the show.
- 7:33Speaker 9: He'll have he'll have last week's news on. You want
- 7:36Speaker 9: to make sure you due paying attention.
- 7:39Speaker 4: He was paying attention to me too.
- 7:41Speaker 5: I was like, who else is reading the internet in
- 7:44Speaker 5: nineteen ninety six, right, It's like.
- 7:46Speaker 7: Maybe, okay, maybe you should have been coaching.
- 7:48Speaker 5: Maybe he should have been coaching.
- 7:50Speaker 8: You know, it's funny or mentioned him, but he's he's
- 7:53Speaker 8: we actually kind of we got along, okay, which which
- 7:57Speaker 8: is about the Okay, it's about the best fit. Well,
- 8:00Speaker 8: wouldn't say that, but it's about the best you could hold.
- 8:03Speaker 4: Hey, yeah, yes, they were and his and and his
- 8:07Speaker 4: son was he was his son was in a horrible position.
- 8:10Speaker 8: You know, I felt I really felt sorry for him,
- 8:14Speaker 8: and he would and he's still coaching. I think, right, yeah,
- 8:18Speaker 8: I really felt sorry Brian because Brian was was playing right,
- 8:24Speaker 8: he was the coach's son. He wasn't Tony and Tony
- 8:28Speaker 8: because Tony Jr. Played today and consolidated and then didn't he.
- 8:32Speaker 7: Just whidd came in.
- 8:36Speaker 8: Okay, No, I think you're right. Yeah, I think they
- 8:40Speaker 8: boked it. But but but you're right.
- 8:43Speaker 4: It was Tony Jr.
- 8:44Speaker 8: Was the one that was just in the horrible position
- 8:46Speaker 8: because they weren't very good and he wasn't great, but
- 8:49Speaker 8: nobody else, you know, they didn't have a lot of
- 8:52Speaker 8: great players.
- 8:54Speaker 4: But but he took the brunt of I think the criticisms, well,
- 8:57Speaker 4: he's just playing his son.
- 8:59Speaker 8: I'm going to have just looked at the bench, you know,
- 9:02Speaker 8: I mean it did, you know, unfortunately, and that's.
- 9:04Speaker 4: His fault too, because you weren't recruiting. But man at
- 9:07Speaker 4: in basketball was had really really terrible shape back in
- 9:10Speaker 4: those days.
- 9:11Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 9:11Speaker 5: I remember doing some stories when they tore down Giraleigh, Yeah,
- 9:15Speaker 5: and some of the history stories, and I remember talking
- 9:18Speaker 5: to Eddie Sutton about how, you know what shame it
- 9:20Speaker 5: was that A and M didn't invest in basketball. It
- 9:23Speaker 5: took him for so long. And then of course they
- 9:25Speaker 5: built the palace on the prairie over there called rid
- 9:28Speaker 5: Arena with no suites in it.
- 9:30Speaker 8: So in fairness, back back when Ried Arena was built,
- 9:36Speaker 8: it wasn't an automatic that you were putting suites in facilities.
- 9:39Speaker 7: That's true.
- 9:40Speaker 5: Okay, well they did that at Reunion too, but that
- 9:42Speaker 5: was in the eight that was nineteen the late seventies.
- 9:45Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:45Speaker 5: Now when Reid opened it was nineteen ninety eight. It
- 9:48Speaker 5: was like, come on now, yeah, you know, let's yeah.
- 9:51Speaker 5: And I remember it fell down first. Yes, it did collapse,
- 9:55Speaker 5: Yes it did. And it was a sign of things
- 9:57Speaker 5: to come. Yes, it was in basketball.
- 10:00Speaker 4: They brought me.
- 10:01Speaker 8: First of all, the coordinating board denied the building car
- 10:05Speaker 8: met because Richards.
- 10:06Speaker 7: They were going to do that because Anne Richards. You know,
- 10:09Speaker 7: but we started but we.
- 10:10Speaker 9: Started out with Chip and I want to make emphasize
- 10:13Speaker 9: that A and M had two legendary icons there when
- 10:16Speaker 9: you mentioned Metcalf and you mentioned Crow and we we.
- 10:22Speaker 7: They didn't get along.
- 10:23Speaker 9: I don't know today if you could have a university
- 10:25Speaker 9: where you have two polar opposites like that, one would
- 10:28Speaker 9: go a lot quicker.
- 10:30Speaker 7: You know, the fact that.
- 10:30Speaker 9: A and M had to And I think I'm not
- 10:33Speaker 9: the only one who said they were friends with boast
- 10:35Speaker 9: or respected both of them. Yes, I don't think today
- 10:38Speaker 9: in college athletics you would have two powerful people like
- 10:41Speaker 9: that against each other, so to speak, or not seen
- 10:44Speaker 9: in the same mind.
- 10:45Speaker 5: Well, you remember, at one time every athletic director was
- 10:48Speaker 5: also the head football coach. That's how you paid, you know, yes, Jackie, Yes,
- 10:53Speaker 5: that was Emery. I don't think Tom Wilson was he.
- 10:56Speaker 4: I think he was.
- 10:57Speaker 5: Okay, yeah, okay, so he was.
- 10:58Speaker 7: He might have been. Yeah.
- 11:00Speaker 5: So back then you paid the football coach more and
- 11:02Speaker 5: you just threw the ad role on there because they
- 11:05Speaker 5: just didn't eighties didn't do that much, right.
- 11:07Speaker 4: I mean Marvion Tate, he just came up, that was
- 11:11Speaker 4: he was there for a while.
- 11:12Speaker 5: He was not a football No, no, I'm.
- 11:14Speaker 8: Just talking about athletic directors. I'm trying to count here.
- 11:18Speaker 5: So anyway, it's just a different era. I mean, now
- 11:21Speaker 5: the athletic directors have to be salespeople and they have
- 11:24Speaker 5: to really, man, they have to be business people. No,
- 11:27Speaker 5: there's no doubt it. Back then that was not the case.
- 11:29Speaker 7: Hey.
- 11:30Speaker 8: Their job back then, Rusty was to just play golf
- 11:33Speaker 8: with with some of the big wigs, right, yeah.
- 11:35Speaker 4: No, it was.
- 11:36Speaker 8: It was that was That was the athletic director's job.
- 11:39Speaker 8: It's just hey, call up so and so. He just
- 11:41Speaker 8: sent us a check, go play golf with them.
- 11:44Speaker 5: We had we had a board meeting, and this was
- 11:47Speaker 5: my early days with twelve Man Foundations, and we were
- 11:49Speaker 5: at a board meeting a nice resort you know, and
- 11:52Speaker 5: John David was still I don't know he's still involved.
- 11:57Speaker 5: He wasn't the athletic director anymore, but he was to
- 12:00Speaker 5: the fundraising. Yeah, so this was he They created basically
- 12:06Speaker 5: a space for him to be a fundraiser, and so
- 12:08Speaker 5: did some good things. But I remember we were at
- 12:10Speaker 5: this really nice resort and John David have been playing
- 12:13Speaker 5: golf and he sat down with all these business leaders
- 12:16Speaker 5: and he took off his shoes and socks and put
- 12:19Speaker 5: his bare feet on the table like country man.
- 12:26Speaker 4: I loved I loved him.
- 12:28Speaker 8: You won't you won't meet more down down to Earth
- 12:32Speaker 8: and and and humble Heisman Trophy winners. I mean, if
- 12:36Speaker 8: if people didn't know who that was, you would never
- 12:39Speaker 8: know that, Hey, this guy won the Heisman Trophy.
- 12:42Speaker 4: He was about his aunt.
- 12:43Speaker 5: He would always say when you ask him that, he's like,
- 12:45Speaker 5: you know, I didn't win the Heisman Trophy. Bear Bryant
- 12:47Speaker 5: won the trophy.
- 12:48Speaker 4: Sure, I get that.
- 12:49Speaker 5: When he said, if you don't give the Heisman trophy,
- 12:51Speaker 5: and they stopped giving it, and so, I mean that's
- 12:55Speaker 5: the first thing he would ever say.
- 12:57Speaker 4: I mean I heard him say it over and over
- 12:58Speaker 4: and over. Then he never had one at Alabama. Is
- 13:01Speaker 4: that crazy?
- 13:01Speaker 5: Crazy?
- 13:02Speaker 4: I mean, that's nuts when you think about it.
- 13:04Speaker 7: Yeah, he's down with them member one time or with
- 13:07Speaker 7: the fumous. He said something. He looked at me, he goes,
- 13:10Speaker 7: if you call me.
- 13:11Speaker 4: I'll kill you.
- 13:11Speaker 8: You know what, in those days, you can do that,
- 13:16Speaker 8: you could do right, you can't. But because there there
- 13:19Speaker 8: has become And I never thought, uh, you know what.
- 13:24Speaker 8: I went to school right during and right after Watergate.
- 13:28Speaker 8: So so the job was you're going to be a reporter,
- 13:30Speaker 8: and I was going to be reporting, and I was
- 13:33Speaker 8: That's that's what I like to do. But it got
- 13:36Speaker 8: me in trouble, obviously a lot of trouble. But it
- 13:40Speaker 8: was never my job to be friends with the people
- 13:42Speaker 8: I was covering. It's not my job to be friends
- 13:45Speaker 8: with the athletes that I'm covering. I never thought that
- 13:49Speaker 8: it's nicer if you have a relationship with them. For sure,
- 13:53Speaker 8: you may get stories that you wouldn't get if you're
- 13:56Speaker 8: if you're trying to be their enemy and not their friend.
- 13:59Speaker 4: But I I never approached and and I know you
- 14:03Speaker 4: didn't either.
- 14:03Speaker 8: Wasn't it's not your job to be their best friend
- 14:06Speaker 8: because you have a job to do.
- 14:08Speaker 5: Yeah, were you going to be Woodward or Burnstein? I
- 14:11Speaker 5: was gonna be both, Okay, I was going to be
- 14:13Speaker 5: one of the too. Yeah, And then the reality is
- 14:17Speaker 5: I was like, I can't make any money and exactly
- 14:20Speaker 5: for business, so I'm gonna go with PR and then
- 14:22Speaker 5: I'm gonna be a fan.
- 14:23Speaker 4: And I've been a lot more money and a lot happier.
- 14:26Speaker 5: Well, it's a lot happier, and the relationships were a
- 14:29Speaker 5: lot more better relationships.
- 14:31Speaker 4: Yes, But again I would.
- 14:33Speaker 5: Be the first to tell people that for many, many
- 14:35Speaker 5: years I was not a journalist. I was a PR
- 14:38Speaker 5: guy promoting. Yes, now, I didn't try to blow smoke,
- 14:42Speaker 5: you know when when things were awful. But then I
- 14:46Speaker 5: just remember when I left The Twelfth Man, I was like,
- 14:48Speaker 5: I can say that I wont like, you.
- 14:52Speaker 8: Know, crazy Homer kind of bit his tongue in a
- 14:55Speaker 8: half a lot of times when it was on the
- 14:56Speaker 8: air with me because he knew he wanted to say things,
- 15:02Speaker 8: but he knew his job didn't permit him to do it.
- 15:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I was I said something about the bad mouth.
- 15:09Speaker 5: Jake's babbodall pardoned me forgive me because the problem was
- 15:12Speaker 5: above that, and that just created more like Yeah, hysteria that.
- 15:19Speaker 4: Of course, I didn't realize at the time.
- 15:21Speaker 5: What that little moniker meant because I had like I
- 15:25Speaker 5: was still twelve Man rusty, which I should have given up,
- 15:27Speaker 5: you know a long time ago after I left. Yes,
- 15:30Speaker 5: and that was a mistake that I made. It wasn't
- 15:32Speaker 5: me criticizing kem someone because oh my gosh, someone was
- 15:37Speaker 5: he needed to be criticized. But yeah, it was just
- 15:41Speaker 5: that role. I remember Dave South got real mad at
- 15:44Speaker 5: me and he was like, you should not be doing that.
- 15:46Speaker 5: I was like, well, I'm not employed by twelve Man anymore.
- 15:48Speaker 5: I can kind of say what I want right right,
- 15:51Speaker 5: Oh he can't.
- 15:52Speaker 9: Luckily, for a long time I was a sports enter
- 15:56Speaker 9: but I was basically covered high schools. It helped out
- 15:59Speaker 9: on a him so I could write the tough columns.
- 16:01Speaker 9: I didn't want Larry because he was out there. It's
- 16:04Speaker 9: a tough situation because of a small town, yes, and
- 16:06Speaker 9: everybody read the paper, so you had to be careful.
- 16:09Speaker 7: It was hard to say, like what you guys suck
- 16:11Speaker 7: and they go out there the next But you.
- 16:13Speaker 8: Know, I always thought the coaches around here, for the
- 16:16Speaker 8: most part, for the most part, especially locally, sees they
- 16:20Speaker 8: had a much easier job than than you know, coaches
- 16:24Speaker 8: in bigger markets. Right now, there were other papers that
- 16:29Speaker 8: would come in and I think surprise some of the
- 16:34Speaker 8: coaches with their questions and how they approached their job
- 16:38Speaker 8: because they were coming in from Dallas and Houston, right
- 16:41Speaker 8: and their job was, you know, was a little bit different.
- 16:46Speaker 4: But they didn't have to live here, right, They don't
- 16:48Speaker 4: have to live here. On the other.
- 16:50Speaker 8: Hand, what was interesting back in the like the Jackie
- 16:54Speaker 8: Sheryl days, is that he could pick up the phone
- 16:58Speaker 8: and call mytation owner or general manager and register a complaint,
- 17:04Speaker 8: which he did, but he would never do that in
- 17:07Speaker 8: Houston or Dallas because he would know better.
- 17:10Speaker 4: He wouldn't.
- 17:11Speaker 8: They would laugh at him, they go, so, what's your problem?
- 17:15Speaker 8: But we're the ones that sees and you know this
- 17:18Speaker 8: because we're local. They pick up the phone and call
- 17:21Speaker 8: you right or call your boss and say, hey, you
- 17:24Speaker 8: need to pull this guy off.
- 17:26Speaker 4: Have you read what he's writing lately?
- 17:28Speaker 5: And I think so much of the animosity between the
- 17:32Speaker 5: media and coaches can stem back to Dallas for Worth,
- 17:37Speaker 5: and in the su well at tex A and m
- 17:41Speaker 5: first because they messed up. I can't remember I guess
- 17:46Speaker 5: it was Dale Hanson who said, you know, they sent
- 17:48Speaker 5: Jerry Or down here to pin down Kevin Murray. And
- 17:54Speaker 5: basically they had a lot of things in line, and
- 17:58Speaker 5: apparently Kevin had a a Camaro that had been given
- 18:03Speaker 5: to him, but it was Jerry was camped out from
- 18:06Speaker 5: the wrong camaro and so Kevin Mercy, that is absolutely
- 18:12Speaker 5: not my car. And when they dug into it wasn't.
- 18:15Speaker 5: So Jerry Or goes back to Dallas and he says,
- 18:18Speaker 5: you know that's where except we better have all of
- 18:21Speaker 5: our i's dotted and tease crossed before we go after
- 18:24Speaker 5: anybody else. So when they went after SMU, they had
- 18:28Speaker 5: so thoroughly investigated things that it was just a whole
- 18:32Speaker 5: different sce.
- 18:32Speaker 4: So I know we've talked about this before.
- 18:34Speaker 8: It's one of my favorite stories, and Dell Hanson nobody
- 18:37Speaker 8: can tell it like del Hanson tells it. But when
- 18:40Speaker 8: all of this stuff was going on, and the final
- 18:43Speaker 8: blow was it was when they had Henry Lee Parker
- 18:48Speaker 8: with the SMU logo and the envelope with his initials.
- 18:52Speaker 8: He puts his initials on there HLP and he shows
- 18:57Speaker 8: him this envelope. He goes, well, Dyvid Stanley says that
- 19:02Speaker 8: you sent this check on this envelope to him, and
- 19:09Speaker 8: and the look on Henry Lee Parker's face when that
- 19:12Speaker 8: camera is rolling and still priceless today and he looks
- 19:17Speaker 8: as his athletic director and nah, that's not mine. But
- 19:22Speaker 8: aren't those your initials in that the station letterhead? The
- 19:28Speaker 8: station let him try, okay, but Hansen goes all he
- 19:34Speaker 8: would have had to say in that situation is, yes,
- 19:39Speaker 8: that's mine. I had to send him an insurance form
- 19:41Speaker 8: for his mom to sign, but yeah, that's that's my initials.
- 19:45Speaker 8: That's that's my envelope. But he didn't do it, and
- 19:48Speaker 8: Hansen said, we would have been back at square one
- 19:52Speaker 8: in our investigation.
- 19:53Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 19:54Speaker 5: Back to the A and M. I think they kind
- 19:57Speaker 5: of told Tom Turville that they were going to interview
- 20:00Speaker 5: Kevin Murray for the game story. Yes, they did, and
- 20:03Speaker 5: then when they interviewed him, they they had nothing to
- 20:06Speaker 5: do with game, I mean Tom with it ide and
- 20:11Speaker 5: he was just like he was as stunned as Kevin
- 20:14Speaker 5: or anybody else. Yes, So, yeah, a lot of that
- 20:16Speaker 5: stuff I remember many years later, right in the early
- 20:21Speaker 5: days of the ticket up in Dallas for it worse, right, So,
- 20:24Speaker 5: they were doing a magazine also, and they had hired
- 20:27Speaker 5: me to do a magazine story along with Scott Monsrout,
- 20:32Speaker 5: who used to be my editor at the pot Worth
- 20:34Speaker 5: Star Telegraphs. So Scott hired me to do this and
- 20:37Speaker 5: he's like, we need to come out with a good story.
- 20:39Speaker 5: Open up. So I did you know Lance mclhane. He
- 20:42Speaker 5: was a realtor in the Dallas there. I said, that'd
- 20:45Speaker 5: be great story. Where are you now? When are you doing?
- 20:48Speaker 2: So?
- 20:49Speaker 5: I asked Lats about those days and he, you know,
- 20:51Speaker 5: He's like, I'm not gonna throw everything out there, but
- 20:54Speaker 5: I will tell you this. This is my favorite story.
- 20:55Speaker 5: It's like I'm at a bar with Craig James after
- 20:58Speaker 5: a big win. And Craig James is from Houston, very
- 21:02Speaker 5: very nice part of Houston, but I'm from Holland Park
- 21:06Speaker 5: and so we go out to a bar and we
- 21:08Speaker 5: see all these s m u lums and they all
- 21:11Speaker 5: know I'm from Holland Park and I shake hands with
- 21:15Speaker 5: some guys and I've got like a They give me
- 21:17Speaker 5: a ten dollar bill and Craig James is over there
- 21:21Speaker 5: and he just he comes over and he said, I
- 21:23Speaker 5: got like six one bills and he Michael Lane is like,
- 21:29Speaker 5: what the heck did you tell him?
- 21:30Speaker 4: I said, I said, I'm from inner city Houston.
- 21:35Speaker 5: So I just love that story.
- 21:40Speaker 7: What would it take to get a thousand?
- 21:42Speaker 5: Yeah, well, I think they're just one hundred dollars bills
- 21:45Speaker 5: that they're handing out this far after.
- 21:48Speaker 4: My favorite coach, Ron going into the.
- 21:52Speaker 8: Locker rooms of high schools with Ron with Ron Meyer
- 21:58Speaker 8: with one hundred dollars bill and his phone number on
- 22:00Speaker 8: their tacked to the bulletin board of these high schools
- 22:04Speaker 8: of players he was recruiting, and they asked him about
- 22:07Speaker 8: this years later, and it is just fantastic.
- 22:11Speaker 4: And he looks and he goes, that sounds like something
- 22:14Speaker 4: I might have done.
- 22:19Speaker 8: And I tell you, if we were back in those days,
- 22:23Speaker 8: I think we'd be a lot better off. I think
- 22:26Speaker 8: college sports would be a lot better off.
- 22:28Speaker 5: I think we're back in those days.
- 22:29Speaker 4: No, except there were thousands.
- 22:32Speaker 8: It's legal, and now there's millions of dollars the stuff.
- 22:37Speaker 5: But you know what I love the most when SMU
- 22:40Speaker 5: came out with the ACC poster is they had the
- 22:43Speaker 5: golden camaro on. Oh yes they did, so I embrace it, baby,
- 22:48Speaker 5: And they they had I don't.
- 22:49Speaker 4: Know if you saw the vidio.
- 22:50Speaker 8: They did promotions right, and they had James and Dickerson
- 22:55Speaker 8: in the in the car, in the convertible cross sing
- 23:00Speaker 8: the bridge into downtown Dallas, and it's like, what what
- 23:04Speaker 8: else are you going to do?
- 23:05Speaker 5: A and M thought they had They thought they had
- 23:08Speaker 5: Eric Dickerson.
- 23:08Speaker 8: They did well, and in fairness, there were a lot
- 23:11Speaker 8: of teams that thought they had Eric Dickerson. Oklahoma thought
- 23:15Speaker 8: they had Eric Dickerson. LSU thought they had Eric Dickerson.
- 23:18Speaker 8: Eric did very well by himself, and you know what,
- 23:22Speaker 8: looking back on it, he was underpaid.
- 23:25Speaker 7: Well.
- 23:25Speaker 5: I will say this too about John Davis. As we
- 23:28Speaker 5: brought this up to start, many of his teammates at
- 23:31Speaker 5: A and M would tell me that he took a
- 23:33Speaker 5: serious pay cut when he went to the NFL. I mean,
- 23:36Speaker 5: I'm just saying that.
- 23:37Speaker 8: That's look, we know this has been going on since
- 23:40Speaker 8: Teddy Roosevelt was oppressibly right, So it's not new.
- 23:43Speaker 5: It's just if you think about what Bearon did to
- 23:46Speaker 5: recruit guys here too. Yeah, you know, sing sing on
- 23:49Speaker 5: the browses, yes, with no women.
- 23:51Speaker 4: Yeah, it was sparse. It was like it was sparse.
- 23:54Speaker 5: Yeah, he said, we can't bring him to campus. We
- 23:58Speaker 5: got to recruit him in dolls.
- 24:00Speaker 4: Hat do you think so? Of course, all right, we're

- 28:19Speaker 8: In the first hour, I know you find this hard
- 28:21Speaker 8: to believe that we don't rehearse any of this or
- 28:24Speaker 8: talk ahead of time about the topics.
- 28:26Speaker 4: Remember you know that it sounds so professional.
- 28:29Speaker 5: We're going to go back to the excellon radio network.
- 28:33Speaker 4: I go back, I go back to the humble ceased US.
- 28:39Speaker 8: But current Tips was one of the reasons I went
- 28:42Speaker 8: in this. Mis Dale and Jack Dale was great. I
- 28:45Speaker 8: mean Jack Dale, Jack Frank Fallen. Oh, it's jack Dale's
- 28:49Speaker 8: fault that I'm I'm sitting in the seat today, it
- 28:52Speaker 8: really is.
- 28:53Speaker 5: I I think I said that Frank Fallen had the
- 28:56Speaker 5: voice of God. I'm sure, he was amazing. It was amazing.
- 28:59Speaker 5: I mean, I just will never forget him at that.
- 29:02Speaker 8: Oh, there just start many great people in this business
- 29:05Speaker 8: because they all have monstrous egos.
- 29:07Speaker 4: But but Frank didn't.
- 29:09Speaker 5: But I just remember when they used to do like
- 29:12Speaker 5: Frank always the better games. But then when they went
- 29:15Speaker 5: to tech, then Jack Dale would do it.
- 29:17Speaker 4: If they would do the color that's correct.
- 29:19Speaker 5: And so Dave South was on the A and M B. Yes,
- 29:22Speaker 5: So just it was so good because you got the
- 29:24Speaker 5: perspective the guy yes, who beat but then you also
- 29:29Speaker 5: got the perspective from the other guys. It was balanced out.
- 29:34Speaker 5: It was so good. It was so unbiased in a
- 29:36Speaker 5: lot of ways. Yes, and now it's you know, the
- 29:40Speaker 5: all the schools owned the radio day owners, so you
- 29:43Speaker 5: get the bias tapes unfortunately got on the radio networks
- 29:46Speaker 5: and they owned the publication.
- 29:48Speaker 8: Se that just spends the information right and and it's
- 29:52Speaker 8: it's a problem and and and cease fights that battle
- 29:55Speaker 8: every day I know because sees, I know, you have
- 29:58Speaker 8: to work twice as hard as as other people who
- 30:02Speaker 8: are like on the payroll and get and get paid
- 30:05Speaker 8: to put out information. And then you get criticized when
- 30:09Speaker 8: you have to run a story that maybe is in
- 30:11Speaker 8: the police blodder and they go, hey, we didn't we
- 30:14Speaker 8: didn't hear about that. You're going, well, yeah, because you're
- 30:16Speaker 8: not going to hear about that.
- 30:18Speaker 7: It's just the way life is.
- 30:20Speaker 4: Everybody, I know, I know, you have to adapt.
- 30:22Speaker 9: Funny, we talked off the air. I mean, there's always
- 30:25Speaker 9: going to be problems, whether athletes are gambling, whether there's arrested,
- 30:31Speaker 9: there's always going to be something out there.
- 30:33Speaker 7: Right now. Quote, you're taking care of the money because
- 30:35Speaker 7: everybody has it. Yes, every athlete has money. Yes, it's
- 30:38Speaker 7: an open check book. You'll go somewhere else.
- 30:40Speaker 8: Jeremiah Love today got a he got a fifty three
- 30:43Speaker 8: million dollar contract.
- 30:44Speaker 4: He said, I'm not going to touch that.
- 30:46Speaker 8: He said, with nil, I've done pretty well so far,
- 30:51Speaker 8: and so that's going in the savings.
- 30:53Speaker 4: That's awesome, I think is that.
- 30:55Speaker 8: I mean, that's that's and God bless it by the
- 30:58Speaker 8: way people have you know, I mean, seriously, I mean
- 31:02Speaker 8: A for being honest and B for for having the
- 31:04Speaker 8: foresight to go, you know what, and he's smart enough
- 31:07Speaker 8: and a sharp kid, going, you know, let's set that aside,
- 31:11Speaker 8: because this NFL thing ain't gonna work all my life.
- 31:13Speaker 5: Right, It's not gonna work all your life. And a
- 31:15Speaker 5: guy like that, he's smart, right, Fine, Hunter Goodwin, you
- 31:19Speaker 5: used to tell me over and over again how one
- 31:20Speaker 5: of his roles with Dolphins is like trying to advise
- 31:24Speaker 5: young people. I'm not going to last for long.
- 31:27Speaker 8: I had a friend that was an accountant for for
- 31:31Speaker 8: entertainers and for athletes and football players. And he had
- 31:35Speaker 8: one particular football player over in Austin who was making
- 31:38Speaker 8: a lot of money, and his girlfriend was living with
- 31:43Speaker 8: him and was stealing a.
- 31:44Speaker 4: Lot of money.
- 31:45Speaker 8: And this guy was spending, like most professional athletes, more
- 31:49Speaker 8: money than he was making. He said, I could not
- 31:52Speaker 8: get him to understand. He said, I finally brought him
- 31:55Speaker 8: poker chips.
- 31:57Speaker 4: He said, I brought him poker chips. He said, I.
- 32:00Speaker 8: I said, this is what your salary is. Okay, right here,
- 32:03Speaker 8: he piled up the poker chips. He started taking chips away.
- 32:06Speaker 8: He said, this is what you're spending on your house,
- 32:10Speaker 8: this is what you're spending on your cars. This is
- 32:12Speaker 8: what your girlfriend's bank account is taking from you.
- 32:15Speaker 4: Okay, And there were no poker chips.
- 32:18Speaker 8: Left, and he he finally understood what he was saying, Now,
- 32:23Speaker 8: unfortunately he didn't do anything about it, right, But that's
- 32:27Speaker 8: what it took for him visually, And I thought it
- 32:30Speaker 8: was brilliant on my friend's part, right to put it
- 32:34Speaker 8: that way. This is what you have left, which is zero.
- 32:38Speaker 5: Yeah, I've told you before that I remember driving down
- 32:41Speaker 5: to Galliston for my first job where Homer Jacobs had
- 32:44Speaker 5: hired me, and I literally remember thinking what am I
- 32:48Speaker 5: going to do with all that money? And I was
- 32:50Speaker 5: making seventeen to five a year.
- 32:52Speaker 4: Oh, I got you beat. Yeah, but I know exactly
- 32:56Speaker 4: what you mean.
- 32:56Speaker 5: Yeah, it's like because I'd never paid my own expense,
- 33:00Speaker 5: is right.
- 33:00Speaker 10: Yeah, So I mean even in college it was like, yeah,
- 33:04Speaker 10: you shared a uh, you know, to rent you know guys,
- 33:08Speaker 10: and so it was a whole different ball game and
- 33:11Speaker 10: I didn't even know who fik it.
- 33:12Speaker 9: Was while taking this money out of my paycheck, I
- 33:19Speaker 9: want to talk to this guy.
- 33:20Speaker 8: My wife, the accountant, is at a place where there's
- 33:24Speaker 8: a lot of students, and she tells the story of
- 33:27Speaker 8: this student coming into the office after her or his
- 33:30Speaker 8: I don't remember first paycheck, and they go, there's this
- 33:36Speaker 8: money has been taken out of my check. She goes yeah,
- 33:40Speaker 8: they go, well, I don't want that. I don't like
- 33:43Speaker 8: that they're taking money out.
- 33:49Speaker 4: Welcome to.
- 33:53Speaker 8: All right, let's sucks to baseball, can't we Let's tuck
- 33:56Speaker 8: a little lagging baseball.
- 33:59Speaker 9: Watch most doubleheader. Wow, it's like I was thinking of,
- 34:03Speaker 9: is this team gonna hit twenty homers today? I mean,
- 34:06Speaker 9: you know, it was like it was like home run Derby.
- 34:09Speaker 9: Then I go, when it was thirteen to five or whatever,
- 34:11Speaker 9: I go, I need to go somewhere and get something
- 34:13Speaker 9: because the guesst game will come back.
- 34:14Speaker 7: They're gonna run roll this game. Yeah. Then they come back,
- 34:17Speaker 7: and then I go, they can't score.
- 34:19Speaker 4: Well, they scored.
- 34:19Speaker 8: They scored eight runs in their two losses. We talked
- 34:22Speaker 8: about this in the first hour. Eight total runs in
- 34:24Speaker 8: the two losses. I'm gonna give some you know, I'm
- 34:27Speaker 8: gonna give some credit to that olmost pitching staff.
- 34:29Speaker 4: Right, they had three great guys, I mean they did.
- 34:32Speaker 8: And the number later hooks coming in two games and
- 34:34Speaker 8: saving right and eleven k's right.
- 34:38Speaker 7: Uh the next day.
- 34:39Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, uh, so you've got to give credit
- 34:42Speaker 8: because we know the can hit.
- 34:44Speaker 4: That's not an issue now. The issue right now is
- 34:46Speaker 4: some injuries and that's a problem, without a doubt.
- 34:50Speaker 8: You want to be getting healthy this time of year
- 34:52Speaker 8: and peaking at this time of year. Uh and you know,
- 34:55Speaker 8: unfortunately they've been hit with some injuries.
- 34:59Speaker 9: Well right now is no more what midweight games. You
- 35:01Speaker 9: down to the nitty gritty. You want to be playing
- 35:04Speaker 9: at your best. And I agree, it's a long season.
- 35:07Speaker 9: It gets grinding you look at all the games they played.
- 35:10Speaker 9: That being said is when you watch that last game.
- 35:14Speaker 9: The most amazing thing to me about a lot of it.
- 35:16Speaker 9: A and them did not walk one time in that
- 35:18Speaker 9: last game. And A and M is very good at
- 35:20Speaker 9: their batteries, are very good at swinging at strikes. First
- 35:23Speaker 9: one thing they do well is they throw. They swing
- 35:26Speaker 9: it strikes and you always felt like I'm watching after three,
- 35:29Speaker 9: five to five, A and M will get a big
- 35:31Speaker 9: hit'll they'll probably win this game somehow, But it never
- 35:35Speaker 9: came about after that one inning. And for them to
- 35:38Speaker 9: split that game, they had to feel almost double header.
- 35:41Speaker 7: I almost say, I feel like they lost to double header.
- 35:43Speaker 9: When you win by thirteen and then you can't buy
- 35:45Speaker 9: a hit in the last five innings of the second
- 35:48Speaker 9: the second game, that's tough.
- 35:50Speaker 7: That's tough.
- 35:50Speaker 8: They had seventeen strikeouts, guys, and no walks.
- 35:55Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 35:56Speaker 5: The thing you worry about when somebody gets hit in
- 35:58Speaker 5: the face, O, man, the and you'll remember this name
- 36:02Speaker 5: chip Willie Calhoun. Yep, and he was the prospects thought.
- 36:06Speaker 4: You were going to say Dicky Thoon, but well.
- 36:08Speaker 5: Yeah, but but yeah, Willie Calhoun, the great prospect for
- 36:12Speaker 5: Rangers got for you, Darvish. Yes, and he was never
- 36:16Speaker 5: the same after he got hit in the face.
- 36:20Speaker 4: If we need to go back, he was great and
- 36:22Speaker 4: then just awful. I'll be just awful.
- 36:25Speaker 5: Such a mental thing.
- 36:26Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, I can't imagine.
- 36:28Speaker 5: You can't stay in the box.
- 36:30Speaker 4: Yes, I mean it's so I can't imagine.
- 36:32Speaker 5: I can't either. And so that's the thing you were
- 36:35Speaker 5: about first though.
- 36:35Speaker 8: They've had two Now what departida, Yes, and he came
- 36:39Speaker 8: right back and and hit hit.
- 36:42Speaker 4: Yes he did.
- 36:42Speaker 9: I watched the game, yesterda, I guess it was Tennessee whatever.
- 36:45Speaker 9: And the guy got hit and luckily in the helmet
- 36:47Speaker 9: ninety three miles per hour. You watch the way the
- 36:51Speaker 9: game's played now, everybody's swinging so hard to try to get.
- 36:54Speaker 7: On top, had to get on top of the plane. Yeah,
- 36:57Speaker 7: so you're on top of the plate from sixty feet
- 36:59Speaker 7: six inches. They're throwing ninety eight miles this hour.
- 37:02Speaker 4: Yeah, it's dangerous.
- 37:03Speaker 9: Hug a helmet you're in. You got to have your
- 37:06Speaker 9: eyes open to see the ball. You got to swing,
- 37:09Speaker 9: and it's it's a bad combination.
- 37:11Speaker 4: You know, I'll never forget.
- 37:12Speaker 8: Tim Kertchin wrote up wrote a book about six or
- 37:15Speaker 8: seven years ago on baseball, and he's just a terrific
- 37:18Speaker 8: baseball guy, and he had a whole chapter on this.
- 37:21Speaker 8: He said, one of the things that nobody ever talks about,
- 37:24Speaker 8: especially in the major leagues, is that when you get
- 37:27Speaker 8: hit with a baseball, it hurts, right, I mean, and.
- 37:32Speaker 4: Don't we don't tell you know.
- 37:34Speaker 8: I did t ball and little league for a while
- 37:36Speaker 8: when my daughters were young, and and I quit warming
- 37:40Speaker 8: up with with hardballs. These kids are little, they can
- 37:43Speaker 8: barely catch a ball. I had to, you know, use
- 37:45Speaker 8: tennis balls right right, because you don't want them throwing
- 37:49Speaker 8: because you don't know where they're throwing it. You don't
- 37:52Speaker 8: know if they can catch it. You can't be throwing
- 37:55Speaker 8: hardballs around to little kids like that, right because they'll
- 37:59Speaker 8: never touch a ball again.
- 38:01Speaker 4: That if they get hit like that.
- 38:03Speaker 8: It's bad enough if they get hit the guy with
- 38:05Speaker 8: the tennis ball that they missed.
- 38:07Speaker 4: But but you know, it hurts, I mean at major leagues.
- 38:11Speaker 8: And he talked about the fact that, man, you don't ever,
- 38:14Speaker 8: if possible, you don't ever want to show that picture
- 38:17Speaker 8: that even if he hit you in the arm or
- 38:19Speaker 8: the small of the back, or even in the rear end,
- 38:23Speaker 8: because the next day you're going to have an impression
- 38:25Speaker 8: of that baseball somewhere on your body where you were hitting.
- 38:28Speaker 7: Right.
- 38:29Speaker 5: Yeah, there's no doubt you have the laces, Yes, the
- 38:32Speaker 5: lace exactly, exactly.
- 38:34Speaker 8: That's just scary. When I saw that, you know, when
- 38:37Speaker 8: he got hit like that, it's just like, oh, man.
- 38:39Speaker 5: Well, and the scary thing is too, We've seen pictures
- 38:42Speaker 5: get the comebackers too.
- 38:44Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 38:44Speaker 5: No, and they don't have helmet.
- 38:46Speaker 4: No, yeah, yeah, yes, And so I.
- 38:50Speaker 5: Wonder at some point, you know, I mean, it's like
- 38:53Speaker 5: the guys who choose intentionally not to wear the protective helmets.
- 38:57Speaker 8: Now in the NFL, was there not a base coach
- 39:01Speaker 8: that got killed by a line drive, got hit in
- 39:03Speaker 8: the in the head.
- 39:05Speaker 4: Yeah, there was? Uh uh cool ba cool Ba was
- 39:10Speaker 4: a coach? What his brother.
- 39:12Speaker 8: Somebody played at the University of Texas. This guy was
- 39:14Speaker 8: coaching third base got hit.
- 39:15Speaker 4: By live drive. But from then on you had to
- 39:18Speaker 4: wear protective the NFL.
- 39:21Speaker 5: You in college, you have these helmets. Now you can
- 39:25Speaker 5: seriously reduce the concussions. But a lot of guys don't
- 39:28Speaker 5: think they're cool, They too heavy, whatever. But then you
- 39:31Speaker 5: look at softball and all these girls are wearing protective
- 39:35Speaker 5: face market you.
- 39:36Speaker 7: Have to because the way they're swinging too, they're coming off.
- 39:38Speaker 4: The same thing, right, you know, a lot closer to.
- 39:40Speaker 9: The food, closer to the plate, and they're hitting somebody,
- 39:43Speaker 9: mashing somebody in the runs and go back.
- 39:45Speaker 7: Joe Evans started wearing a helmet when she was here.
- 39:47Speaker 4: She got she did, yeah she did.
- 39:49Speaker 7: And I look out there and I go, my gosh,
- 39:51Speaker 7: the picture. You need to have all that stuff.
- 39:54Speaker 4: Okay, we're gonna take a break.
- 39:55Speaker 8: We're gonna come back, get back to the actual on
- 39:57Speaker 8: the field.
- 39:58Speaker 4: No, no, it's fine, I'm fine with that.
- 39:59Speaker 8: But we're going to talk about on the field what
- 40:01Speaker 8: this team has to do.
- 40:03Speaker 4: Do they have the top eight nailed down? What do
- 40:07Speaker 4: they have to do?
- 40:08Speaker 8: All right, well, you've already said out, but hey, We're
- 40:10Speaker 8: gonna tease them.
- 40:11Speaker 4: We're gonna tease them about that.

- 41:11Speaker 14: Now, I'm driving across it.
- 41:13Speaker 4: What are you doing?
- 41:14Speaker 2: I'm getting out.
- 41:15Speaker 4: Wait wait, wait, hey, I've got an idea. How about
- 41:18Speaker 4: we turn around, go a different way and be late.
- 41:21Speaker 7: For the party.
- 41:21Speaker 4: You are so smart. Turn around, don't drown a message
- 41:25Speaker 4: from text Dodd.
- 41:26Speaker 1: The Texas Rangers picked up a series win against the
- 41:29Speaker 1: Chicago Cubs yesterday, shutting them out three nothing. The game
- 41:33Speaker 1: was a pitcher's duel, and Jacob de Gram came out
- 41:35Speaker 1: on top, throwing seven scoreless innings and striking out ten batters.
- 41:39Speaker 1: Up one nothing. In the bottom of the eighth inning,
- 41:41Speaker 1: Evan Carter hit a two run blast to give the
- 41:44Speaker 1: Rangers a three run lead.
- 41:46Speaker 9: Here's the pitch, swung on in a high fly ball
- 41:48Speaker 9: to deep right field Suzuki back in the corner at
- 41:51Speaker 9: the wall.
- 41:52Speaker 4: That ball is history.
- 41:54Speaker 1: Clips courtesy of Eric Nadell and the Rangers Radio Network.
- 41:58Speaker 1: With a win, the Rangers shut up out the Cubs
- 42:00Speaker 1: for the second straight game and win the home series
- 42:03Speaker 1: to one. They'll begin the second and final series of
- 42:06Speaker 1: the current homestand tonight against the Arizona Diamondbacks. First pitches
- 42:11Speaker 1: scheduled for seven oh five, and coverage will be provided
- 42:14Speaker 1: by the Rangers Sports network with your Texas Rangers report.
- 42:18Speaker 5: I'm Adam C.

- 42:54Speaker 14: The Zon eleven fifty AM and ninety three point seven FM.
- 43:08Speaker 8: So I don't think there's another radio station anywhere in
- 43:11Speaker 8: the world, and especially any kind of talk format that
- 43:14Speaker 8: is playing Jerry, Jeff Walker and the Temptations in the
- 43:17Speaker 8: same show.
- 43:18Speaker 4: I'm pretty sure that ship.
- 43:20Speaker 7: You are a trendsetter in so many ways.
- 43:22Speaker 8: To me, who I have said this for thirty three years.
- 43:26Speaker 8: Music most days is the best part of this program.
- 43:30Speaker 8: Now tomorrow I have a really good show. Daryl Ray's
- 43:34Speaker 8: Array of the Stars is with me and Tom Doyle
- 43:36Speaker 8: and his book Ringo and Ringo star tomorrow on the
- 43:39Speaker 8: program today in the second hour's Good Show, because we
- 43:43Speaker 8: got Robert Cessna and Rusty Berson in the studio, we
- 43:45Speaker 8: started in break going, what does A and M have
- 43:48Speaker 8: to do to solidify a top eight.
- 43:51Speaker 5: Well, we can't get swept. They cannot get swept.
- 43:54Speaker 7: No way. You're right they can't. That would be disaster.
- 43:58Speaker 4: I don't think they will, but you're right, would be disastered.
- 44:00Speaker 5: I think that they would feel a lot more comfortable
- 44:03Speaker 5: if they win the series. Yeah, I think theoretically, I
- 44:07Speaker 5: think you could get a top eight seed if you
- 44:09Speaker 5: win one game, yes, But the fact that you lost
- 44:12Speaker 5: to those games, yeah, I said last week it would
- 44:16Speaker 5: be really nice to go three and three. Yeah, And
- 44:18Speaker 5: so now you need to win the series, yeah to
- 44:21Speaker 5: get to that.
- 44:22Speaker 8: Yet you know, I'm not convinced of that as as
- 44:25Speaker 8: well as they played, because it is the SEC and
- 44:29Speaker 8: and you're all on the road and I'm looking at
- 44:32Speaker 8: and I I talked about this in the first time.
- 44:34Speaker 8: But when you start looking at all these teams, I
- 44:36Speaker 8: don't know how many teams are gonna take cease when
- 44:38Speaker 8: when they start but it's gonna be a bunch.
- 44:42Speaker 5: That she's just jacking up to seventy six.
- 44:44Speaker 9: It was the same problem. It was the same problem
- 44:46Speaker 9: with softball. The SEC, which I don't like it is
- 44:49Speaker 9: unbalanced schedule. Yes, so you somebody like Ole miss.
- 44:52Speaker 7: Who did not play will not play South.
- 44:54Speaker 9: Carolina or Missouri, right, so you you gotta judge them
- 44:58Speaker 9: so different you're right than somebody else that played those.
- 45:01Speaker 7: Sixteen right games.
- 45:02Speaker 4: Yes, so you.
- 45:03Speaker 9: Said there, and you're the committee, and you go, okay,
- 45:05Speaker 9: this team, this team is seventeen and thirteen.
- 45:08Speaker 7: Well that's pretty good. But this team's fifteen and fifteen
- 45:11Speaker 7: and they didn't play any cupcakes.
- 45:12Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, it's so tough, fair point.
- 45:14Speaker 7: It's so tough. So when I'm with Rusty and I
- 45:17Speaker 7: think they need to.
- 45:18Speaker 9: Win two this weekend, okay, and then go down and
- 45:21Speaker 9: win one, one and one and they'll be in the.
- 45:23Speaker 8: Top eight, Well I hope, I hope, and I'm not.
- 45:28Speaker 8: I don't know how they do it, cease I don't. Well,
- 45:30Speaker 8: you said they need to win too this weekend, Okay,
- 45:33Speaker 8: I'll buy that. But if they win to this weekend
- 45:36Speaker 8: and they lose the first round of a meaningless tournament,
- 45:40Speaker 8: and you tell me that's why they're not in the
- 45:43Speaker 8: top eight.
- 45:43Speaker 4: I will be upset with that.
- 45:45Speaker 9: Because I don't know what the other teams are going
- 45:47Speaker 9: to do because there's so many clothes. If somebody goes
- 45:49Speaker 9: down there that's under the and they win three games
- 45:52Speaker 9: at Hoover.
- 45:53Speaker 5: There's five teams right now with sixteen wins, yes, which
- 45:56Speaker 5: is so amazing. Well, and it is amazing. And it's
- 45:59Speaker 5: like you for A and M State because I felt
- 46:02Speaker 5: like the way Aden was playing, had they gotten the
- 46:04Speaker 5: third game against Texas, they probably would have won that game.
- 46:07Speaker 5: I mean, so, yes, you know, I mean that's the
- 46:11Speaker 5: nature of baseball, right, Yes, I mean the nature of
- 46:15Speaker 5: baseball is you score eighteen runs one game and you
- 46:17Speaker 5: can't win either or the other games.
- 46:19Speaker 7: You know.
- 46:19Speaker 5: It's like, gosh, I wish we could, you know, spread
- 46:22Speaker 5: that out a little bit, right.
- 46:24Speaker 4: I just.
- 46:26Speaker 8: Man, I hope we're beyond after you've played and you
- 46:30Speaker 8: and you mentioned the metrics, but after you've played fifty
- 46:34Speaker 8: five games and you've played, you know, thirty conference games,
- 46:39Speaker 8: I hope we know who the best teams are for
- 46:43Speaker 8: the most part, right in this league, I think, I think,
- 46:46Speaker 8: and you're right, Sees you make a fair point because
- 46:49Speaker 8: not everybody plays everybody, but you can you can look
- 46:53Speaker 8: at who's played who.
- 46:54Speaker 5: You can certainly do.
- 46:55Speaker 8: That, and that's why they have the RPI, that's why
- 46:58Speaker 8: they have those metrics. Going in and you're looking and
- 47:01Speaker 8: you're going, well, we think, you know these these are
- 47:04Speaker 8: the top let's say eight teams in the SEC, and
- 47:08Speaker 8: then we'll go, well, four of those teams, you know,
- 47:12Speaker 8: with this league, for of those eight teams may be
- 47:15Speaker 8: in the top eight.
- 47:15Speaker 5: If you lost, like Cease is saying, if you lost
- 47:19Speaker 5: four of your last six regular season games, true, and
- 47:22Speaker 5: then you lost the first first game in the tournament,
- 47:25Speaker 5: So then you understand that seven. I understand that. This
- 47:28Speaker 5: issue now is that if you lose to three Mississippi State,
- 47:31Speaker 5: you're going to finish with the identical record as they have. Yes,
- 47:35Speaker 5: so they're fifteen wins, right, Yeah, they're fifteen and twelve.
- 47:38Speaker 5: So if you were to lose two three, both teams
- 47:40Speaker 5: would finish.
- 47:41Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, you'd be, you'd be they both be seventeen
- 47:45Speaker 8: and twelve.
- 47:46Speaker 7: I'm like you, guys, I was listening to one of
- 47:47Speaker 7: the broadcast.
- 47:48Speaker 5: I guess I was wrong. Mississ State is seventeen thirteen.
- 47:52Speaker 8: No, no, they're the Mississippi State is fifteen and twelve
- 47:55Speaker 8: as well. Okay, so there's four teams with sixteen wins Georgia, Texas,
- 48:00Speaker 8: A and him in Auburn and Alabama. You said five
- 48:03Speaker 8: and Alabama, there are five teams with sixteen.
- 48:06Speaker 9: I was listening to those guys the other day and
- 48:08Speaker 9: they're in they're living, breathing, and suddenly what's his name,
- 48:12Speaker 9: the former Stanford pitchers was saying, well, yeah, yeah, I've
- 48:14Speaker 9: got these two ACC teams in the top eight.
- 48:17Speaker 7: I've got UCLA and they.
- 48:19Speaker 9: Ripped off four real quick, real quick, not only at
- 48:21Speaker 9: least four SEC teams and we know George is going
- 48:24Speaker 9: to be one. Yes, so suddenly you're down to like
- 48:27Speaker 9: you're down to the spots.
- 48:28Speaker 7: Yeah, you're right.
- 48:28Speaker 5: Isn't it ironic or crazy that we're talking about who's
- 48:31Speaker 5: gonna be in the postseason? We're not mentioning an LSU Vanderbilt.
- 48:34Speaker 4: No, we are not.
- 48:35Speaker 7: When I saw I.
- 48:36Speaker 9: Saw those numbers about, like Vanderbilt A ninety two are
- 48:41Speaker 9: seventy two, was amazing, I go, I never would have
- 48:43Speaker 9: thought that would happen. Nom Corbin there, No, it's amazing,
- 48:48Speaker 9: and they're probably gonna win thirty games.
- 48:50Speaker 4: They're twenty nine and twenty four right now.
- 48:51Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 48:52Speaker 4: I don't have the schedule.
- 48:53Speaker 8: Who they're playing LUs you is too Yeah, LSU's to
- 48:56Speaker 8: say twenty nine and twenty four, but they're nine and
- 48:58Speaker 8: eighteen in the league. R L s U is out
- 49:02Speaker 8: right now right, they're out there on the outside looking in.
- 49:05Speaker 5: Uh but wait, you're right poor occasions.
- 49:09Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, they're not going to be hosting.
- 49:11Speaker 7: They'll have to go through their their whiskey bottle somewhere else.
- 49:15Speaker 7: I don't know, Maybe get on the high school playoffs.
- 49:17Speaker 5: Maybe put this season they'll pay.
- 49:19Speaker 4: I guarantee they'll be representing Omaha.
- 49:21Speaker 8: No matter what, your fans will be there right, exactly right,
- 49:24Speaker 8: their fans will be there.
- 49:25Speaker 5: I'll tell you what. LSU fans and Texas fans, they're
- 49:28Speaker 5: gonna be there no matter what.
- 49:30Speaker 9: You're right, But guys, it's better than to talk last
- 49:33Speaker 9: year at this time no doubt.
- 49:34Speaker 4: So you're looking at no doubt.
- 49:35Speaker 7: Are there going to be a seventh seed and eight
- 49:37Speaker 7: to nine and ten?
- 49:38Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, they're gonna put up against Texas.
- 49:41Speaker 8: And I will I will say again, we've had this
- 49:43Speaker 8: conversation it's like, hey, they're going to be in the
- 49:45Speaker 8: super Regionals, but they're going to be the super regional
- 49:47Speaker 8: and thinking, well, let's let's win the regional first and
- 49:51Speaker 8: then you know, and I understand the home home field,
- 49:54Speaker 8: I get that, right, but but let's let's let's see
- 49:58Speaker 8: what it.
- 49:59Speaker 5: Is is when you're going into the postseason. We know
- 50:02Speaker 5: this about baseball. It is not the best teams, who's
- 50:06Speaker 5: playing the best. So you don't want to have lost
- 50:08Speaker 5: five or seven going into the post And you're not
- 50:11Speaker 5: sure about the health, right, aren't sure about the pitching?
- 50:16Speaker 9: Yes, few years ago Montgomery got hurt here. Yes, yes,
- 50:20Speaker 9: you just never know about the injuries.
- 50:21Speaker 8: Yeah, you're right about you're right about pitching. I'm I'm
- 50:24Speaker 8: looking at at Hunter Bond. That would be a great
- 50:27Speaker 8: story because now he's had two good outings in a row, right,
- 50:31Speaker 8: and and maybe he's getting healthy.
- 50:33Speaker 5: And it was better out of the pin.
- 50:35Speaker 4: He was better. Uh he's still not great, but he
- 50:38Speaker 4: was he was better out of the pin. Uh, So
- 50:42Speaker 4: I I you know, correct baby steps.
- 50:46Speaker 8: I think Gavin Lyones probably pitched a little much on
- 50:49Speaker 8: They asked quite a bit of him this weekend. But
- 50:52Speaker 8: but we know, but but you know you're you can
- 50:56Speaker 8: rely on him, you.
- 50:57Speaker 4: Know, then Western muscuts let that.
- 51:00Speaker 8: But again, as we've said, that's baseball, right, I mean,
- 51:04Speaker 8: that's just that's the nature of the game.
- 51:09Speaker 7: They are where they are. They've done a lot.
- 51:11Speaker 4: Yes they have, and a heck of a year so far.
- 51:14Speaker 9: This should be a great series because we know Missiosi
- 51:16Speaker 9: State's no slots, our typical SEC team. They hit the ball,
- 51:20Speaker 9: they got a couple of pitchers. Yep, it's going to
- 51:22Speaker 9: be a hard fought series because they.
- 51:24Speaker 4: Gave Texas all they wanted last weekend, and Austin.
- 51:27Speaker 7: Am going to win one or two. I don't think
- 51:29Speaker 7: either team sweeps. I might be wrong.
- 51:32Speaker 5: Well I'll tell you what. If A and M sweeps,
- 51:34Speaker 5: I'm gonna feel real good about where Oh.
- 51:36Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 51:37Speaker 4: So we've got a few minutes left.
- 51:39Speaker 8: You brought something up in passing with the seventy six
- 51:43Speaker 8: teams that the NCAA is going to expand the tournament.
- 51:47Speaker 7: Hat it. I just I'm old, grumpy.
- 51:50Speaker 8: I am too. I'm old and grumpy. Get off my lawn,
- 51:53Speaker 8: me too. But I don't know what the negotiation was.
- 51:56Speaker 8: I don't know how much extra money they got. Uh,
- 51:59Speaker 8: they wouldn't do it without what you know, without paying
- 52:04Speaker 8: paying for all of those offices they have in Indianapolis
- 52:08Speaker 8: and all of those people that they have hired up
- 52:10Speaker 8: in Indianapolis.
- 52:11Speaker 4: So I you know, eventually that will come out.
- 52:15Speaker 5: Here's my issue is that even with seventy six teams,
- 52:19Speaker 5: this is going to benefit the SEC is going to
- 52:22Speaker 5: benefit the ACC, not the little team. So here's my deal.
- 52:28Speaker 5: Even next year, if Miami of Ohio is undefeated and
- 52:32Speaker 5: they lose their in their conference championship games, yes, they're
- 52:35Speaker 5: still going to be debate ye whether they should be.
- 52:37Speaker 4: You're absolutely right. That's not going to change and.
- 52:39Speaker 7: Change because there's a fifteen to fourteen Rounderbilt team.
- 52:42Speaker 8: I mean, Vanderbilt is going to get in Sankey is
- 52:45Speaker 8: on record as saying we you know, I don't know
- 52:48Speaker 8: what the big deal is. We don't need all of
- 52:49Speaker 8: those little teams. You know, these are the teams that
- 52:52Speaker 8: play this schedule. I'm going, okay, well, this is what's
- 52:54Speaker 8: made the tournament so great as that first weekend with
- 52:58Speaker 8: all the other nothing better than the first weekend. Now
- 53:01Speaker 8: most of the time it's chalk after that. And I
- 53:03Speaker 8: would argue that in this nil day and age. It'll
- 53:07Speaker 8: be even more so because those little teams are going
- 53:10Speaker 8: to happen even harder time, you know, making it work.
- 53:13Speaker 5: Yeah, the second weekend is usually what everything works out,
- 53:17Speaker 5: you know. I mean, there's there's been some exceptions, we sure,
- 53:20Speaker 5: you know.
- 53:20Speaker 4: Absolutely, And again that's what makes.
- 53:23Speaker 5: Chicago a couple of years ago. Yeah, I mean, that
- 53:26Speaker 5: was a great story. But yeah, you're right, Chip, it's
- 53:30Speaker 5: gonna be less and less because those really good players
- 53:34Speaker 5: on those little schools are gonna be gone by the
- 53:38Speaker 5: time their junior year. They're gonna get a lot more
- 53:41Speaker 5: money from the big schools.
- 53:42Speaker 7: Yes, because Aubrey should have been in tournament.
- 53:44Speaker 8: And if and as you mentioned, if somebody does slip
- 53:47Speaker 8: through than that, and there will be players. There's always players,
- 53:51Speaker 8: right or for whatever reason, they end up in a
- 53:54Speaker 8: little school. That school gets to the tournament when he's
- 53:57Speaker 8: a freshman. Well, he ain't staying at that school, right,
- 54:01Speaker 8: he can't. He can't afford to it, unless he's just
- 54:04Speaker 8: an exceptional circumstance.
- 54:07Speaker 5: Well, I remember the coach from one of these little
- 54:09Speaker 5: small schools who clinched the bid early on. He was
- 54:12Speaker 5: complaining because there was an Auburn assistant sitting next to him,
- 54:16Speaker 5: or sitting next to one of his players, trying to
- 54:18Speaker 5: actively recruit that player while they were playing the game. Yes,
- 54:23Speaker 5: it's like for the following years, like, come on, have
- 54:26Speaker 5: some decency at least.
- 54:27Speaker 8: Wait till the first of all, this is basketball we're
- 54:31Speaker 8: talking about, so there's never been any decency. Correct, Sorry,
- 54:39Speaker 8: yeah that's fair, Yeah, fair, But you know, this is
- 54:43Speaker 8: a sport that's been ugly from long before football.
- 54:47Speaker 4: Uglier and long before football.
- 54:49Speaker 5: Right, a lot of AAU coaches have made a lot
- 54:52Speaker 5: of money.
- 54:52Speaker 8: Oh my gosh, just read just read Sonny Vaccaro's book.
- 54:57Speaker 4: It's awesome. You know, it was so much fun talking
- 55:00Speaker 4: to him.
- 55:01Speaker 8: And just read that book and you'll you'll know most
- 55:04Speaker 8: of what you need to know. All right, guys, we've
