- 0:00Katie: In this episode, you will discover the three signs that stress is quietly damaging your fertility even when you genuinely feel calm
- 0:11Welcome to the Finally Get Pregnant Naturally podcast, the podcast helping women identify the real reasons you haven't conceived or stayed pregnant so you and your partner can finally grow the family of your dreams.
- 0:25I'm your host, Dr.
- 0:26Katie Wood.
- 0:27Let's dive in, shall we?
- 0:29Katie: Three things you'll gain from today's episode: why feeling calm is not the same as your body being in a state that actually supports conception, the three physical signs that your nervous system is still in a stressed state even
- 0:45Katie: when your mind feels fine, and what to actually do about it so your body can finally shift into the state where fertility is a priority again.
- 0:55Katie: Now let's talk about why feeling calm is not the same as your body feeling safe.
- 1:06Katie: And if you've been trying to conceive for any length of time, I'm almost positive that someone has certainly told you to just relax.
- 1:16Katie: And nothing makes a high-achieving woman want to throw across the room faster than being told to just relax.
- 1:26Katie: I know because I am that woman.
- 1:29Katie: Because you're not a mess, right?
- 1:32Katie: You're not falling apart at the seams.
- 1:34Katie: You know you can handle hard things.
- 1:37Katie: And you feel, for the most part, calm.
- 1:41Katie: And here is what I really want you to understand because this is the part that nobody explains, but feeling calm and being in a physiological state of safety are actually two completely different things.
- 1:58Katie: And I actually learned this kind of the hard way myself a few years back.
- 2:03Katie: You can feel calm on the surface, right?
- 2:08Katie: Outwardly, externally, you can look and feel calm while your nervous system is running a low-grade stress response underneath all day, every day.
- 2:21Katie: And that's not a mindset problem, it's a wiring problem.
- 2:27Katie: And for the woman who's spent years performing under pressure, staying composed while carrying an enormous load underneath it all, pushing through without complaint, that pattern is so normal it's invisible.
- 2:50Katie: You do not feel stressed because this level of activation is simply your baseline now.
- 2:59Katie: You're just completely unconscious of it.
- 3:02Katie: And I can 1,000% relate because I was struggling with some gut stuff a while back, and I remember working with a functional medicine provider, and she was like, "Tell me about your stress."
- 3:17Katie: And I was like, "I don't have any stress."
- 3:19Katie: Yeah, I was still working retail, 12-hour shifts.
- 3:22Katie: I had, gosh, I don't know, my daughter was one or two at the time.
- 3:27Katie: Like, and then she helped me peel the layers back, and then I, I finally realized like, oh my gosh, like I just had no idea what stress really was and what stress really felt like because just moving through
- 3:42Katie: my day today, like it was just my baseline and I had no idea.
- 3:46Katie: So the problem is your reproductive system does not respond to how calm you feel, quote-unquote, or how calm you tell yourself that you are.
- 3:59Katie: It responds to the signals your body is actually sending internally.
- 4:04Katie: And a body in chronic low-grade stress is a body that's quietly deprioritizing conception, no matter how serene you look from the outside.
- 4:14Katie: So the question is not are you stressed?
- 4:18Katie: The question is what is your body actually doing within?
- 4:22Katie: And it will tell you if you know these three signs to look for.
- 4:28Katie: And of course, there's more than three, but these are just three of the main ones that I see.
- 4:32Katie: Sign number one: You cannot fully wind down, even when nothing is wrong.
- 4:39Katie: So maybe you lie down at night and your mind is just still running.
- 4:44Katie: You sit down to rest and feel a low hum of restlessness, a pull to be doing something, right?
- 4:50Katie: You can't just kind of sit and be with yourself.
- 4:54Katie: Like, you constantly have to be doing, doing, doing.
- 4:58Katie: You wake at 3:00 AM for no reason.
- 5:01Katie: Rest does not feel restful to you.
- 5:05Katie: This is a sign that your sympathetic nervous system, that stress branch, is not switching off the way it should.
- 5:14Katie: When your body cannot accept deep rest or silence, cortisol stays elevated around the clock.
- 5:23Katie: And elevated cortisol directly suppresses progesterone, blunts ovulation signaling, and disrupts the circadian rhythm your hormones depend on.
- 5:34Katie: You can feel calm and still never actually be at rest internally.
- 5:40Katie: Number two, your digestion is off even if your diet is clean and looks like the picture of perfection.
- 5:51Katie: Bloating, unpredictable digestion, or a gut that does not feel right despite eating well, because digestion is one of the first systems your body will shut down when it's under stress.
- 6:05Katie: Because when your nervous system perceives a threat, It diverts resources away from digestion and reproduction and puts it all towards what you need for survival.
- 6:18Katie: So a digestive system that is struggling, even on a clean diet, is often a direct readout of a nervous system that is stuck in a low-grade threat state, which can then open the door for dysbiosis or gut imbalances
- 6:35Katie: to occur, such as H.
- 6:37Katie: pylori and opportunistic infections and overgrowths.
- 6:42Katie: And because your gut governs how you metabolize estrogen and absorb the nutrients your fertility depends on, this is not just a comfort issue, it's a fertility one.
- 6:54Katie: Your gut and your stress response are talking to each other constantly, and your digestion is one of the clearest windows into what that conversation is actually saying.
- 7:07Katie: Sign number three: Your cycle is telling the real story.
- 7:12Katie: Spotting before your period, a luteal phase that is getting shorter, PMS that has Cycles that have become less predictable.
- 7:23Katie: These are some of the most honest stress signals your body has because your cycle is built on a hormonal cascade that stress interrupts directly.
- 7:34Katie: Because when cortisol is chronically elevated, your body pulls from the same raw material it would use to make progesterone, and progesterone is the hormone that sustains a healthy pregnancy.
- 7:48Katie: So a cycle that's quietly shifting, even while you feel fine emotionally, is often your body showing you the stress load your mind has learned to ignore.
- 8:01Katie: Your cycle doesn't fake it till you make it.
- 8:03Katie: It just tells you the truth, point blank.
- 8:07Katie: So let's talk about what to actually do because here's the good news and it is very real.
- 8:14Katie: You do not fix this by just, "Okay, I just need to feel calmer."
- 8:20Katie: No.
- 8:21Katie: You cannot think your way into physiological safety.
- 8:26Katie: You create it through the body with small repeatable signals that tell your nervous system that it is safe to come out of survival mode.
- 8:38Katie: So a lot of this can look like eating in a way that keeps your blood sugar stable so your body is not generating a stress response every few hours from a blood sugar crash, protecting your sleep window as
- 8:51Katie: if it were a meeting that you cannot miss, slowly chewing your food and sitting down to eat without rushing or stressing, building in genuine downshifts during the day, even two minutes of slow breathing with a long exhale because
- 9:10Katie: the exhale is the physiological off switch, and addressing the inputs that keep your system activated underneath it all.
- 9:20Katie: Boundaries, right?
- 9:22Katie: It could be gut imbalance, hormonal patterns that are all feeding the stress loop from the inside.
- 9:30Katie: And this is the piece that most people miss, but some of what is keeping your body in a stress state is not emotional at all.
- 9:38Katie: It's physiological.
- 9:40Katie: Inflammation, blood sugar instability, nutrient depletion, gut dysfunction all keep your nervous system activated no matter how peaceful your life looks on paper.
- 9:54Katie: You can be meditating for 20 minutes twice a day, and if these things are still going on underneath within the body, it's still gonna be activating a stress response within your body.
- 10:05Katie: You cannot breathe your way out of a stress response that is being driven by your biology at the cellular level.
- 10:15Katie: Yes, br- like, I'm not discounting breathing.
- 10:17Katie: Breathing is so, so important, but this is why we need to look at the whole body, the whole picture.
- 10:24Katie: It's not just about eating healthy, so I'm good, or getting good sleep, but, like, everything else is, is not, being addressed.
- 10:35Katie: And it's not just about, oh, I'm just gonna do breathwork and meditate, but, like, everything else is still kind of going awry underneath.
- 10:43Katie: The whole picture has to be addressed.
- 10:46Katie: You have to see what's actually driving it.
- 10:49Katie: And that's why I always want to know what is happening underneath for a woman in this exact situation.
- 10:54Katie: Because when you can see the real inputs, you can finally calm the system at the root instead of managing the symptoms on the surface.
- 11:03Katie: Calm is not the goal.
- 11:06Katie: Safety is.
- 11:07Katie: And safety is something your body can learn once you give it the right signals and remove the hidden ones working against it.
- 11:16Katie: And that's exactly why I built Decode Your Fertility the way that I did.
- 11:22Katie: Decode is my root cause investigation framework.
- 11:26Katie: Your gut, your hormones, your nutrients, your full terrain, so you can finally see what is actually keeping your body in that stress state instead of guessing at it all.
- 11:36Katie: Because here is the part that's a total game changer, and it's the part that matters most for everything we talked about today.
- 11:44Katie: Inside Decode, before anyone would ever open their lab or test results, I walk you through a grounding practice because I do not want you receiving this information in a dysregulated state.
- 12:02Katie: And if your results show you something that needs addressing, I guide you back to that regulated place before you take a single action.
- 12:12Katie: Because taking aligned action from a calm, regulated nervous system versus a panicked, dysregulated one is ultimately what makes the difference in whether any of this works.
- 12:25Katie: That is the whole philosophy of Decode.
- 12:28Katie: Not just answers, but answers you can actually act on from a place of safety.
- 12:35Katie: The link is in the show notes if you want to learn more and sign up.
- 12:39Katie: So let's recap.
- 12:41Katie: Feeling calm is not the same as being in a physiological state of safety, and your reproductive system responds to the second one.
- 12:51Katie: The three signs that stress is still damaging your fertility even when you feel fine are an inability to fully wind down, digestion that is off even on a clean diet, and a cycle that is quietly shifting in a
- 13:05Katie: negative way.
- 13:07Katie: You do not fix this by trying harder to relax.
- 13:10Katie: You fix it by sending your body real signals of safety and by uncovering the physical inputs like inflammation, blood sugar, and gut imbalance that are keeping your system activated underneath it all.
- 13:23Katie: Calm is not the goal.
- 13:25Katie: Safety is.
- 13:26Katie: And your body can learn it.
- 13:30Katie: Thank you so much for listening to today's episode.
