- 0:00The physical body has an ingrained response for most
- 0:04people to vibrations that precipitate illnesses.
- 0:09The vector carrying that vibration, whether one calls it
- 0:13germs, bacteria, virus, or suggestion, strikes the
- 0:19protective vital envelope or aura surrounding the body.
- 0:24If it finds an opening, or if it can create an opening, it enters
- 0:29into the physical body and begins the process of activation
- 0:33of its characteristic vibration, leading to the appearance of
- 0:37symptoms. In some cases, these forces
- 0:40utilize suggestions with a strong component of fear so as
- 0:45to try to defeat the mental and vital response before it can act
- 0:49to help protect the body. The physical cells can also
- 0:53experience this fear if it raises a powerful enough
- 0:57vibration to reach through the vital envelope.
- 1:02As this happens, the body marshals its defense mechanism
- 1:05to try to fight off the illness, and in the course of that
- 1:09struggle, byproducts of the struggle are produced, leading
- 1:12to what we characterize as inflammation, mucus, fever, and
- 1:18various methods of expulsion of the residues from the body.
- 1:24If we observe the progression closely, and if one has a subtle
- 1:29enough awareness, one can actually see or feel the impact
- 1:33before it manifests any illness. It may be a sense of pressure on
- 1:39the aura, it may be a feeling of weakness, it may be the rising
- 1:44up of some fear or anxiety about an illness, or even the first
- 1:50sense of whatever the illness is that is trying to manifest.
- 1:55At these early stages, if one counters with a strong will to
- 1:59reject the illness, it is possible to prevent it.
- 2:03This is not just a mental formation.
- 2:05Rather, it must be able to influence the physical mind and
- 2:10the physical body in order to carry out this influence.
- 2:15If the control by the consciousness is not
- 2:18sufficiently developed, sometimes an external aid is
- 2:22utilized to convince the physical mind and the body that
- 2:26it need not get sick. This may be in the form of a
- 2:30call to the divine with total faith, or it may take the form
- 2:34of a particularly powerful mantra that has the ability to
- 2:38change the vibrational pattern and strengthen the aura.
- 2:43Or it may take the form of an external substance, such as an
- 2:47herbal preparation, that essentially tells the body that
- 2:51the need is being taken care of and all will be well.
- 2:56In some cases, an inert substance is used for what is
- 3:00commonly called the placebo effect.
- 3:03The point here is that it need not be a powerful drug if the
- 3:07body is simply assured that whatever is being done will help
- 3:12it stave off the illness. Eventually, as the spiritual
- 3:17practice develops, the seeker may find an enhanced capacity
- 3:21for avoiding or throwing off illness vibrations, shortening
- 3:26their intensity or duration, or simply not becoming I'll.
- 3:31Some cases show the power of the spiritual influence of the guru,
- 3:36such as the experience recounted by Paramount Yogananda in his
- 3:41Autobiography of a Yogi. Reliance on the power of the
- 3:46guru and the power of prayer. A serious illness was overcome.
- 3:53Other instances in the same text provide a similar message.
- 3:57Illness can be defeated by directed spiritual force, by
- 4:02whatever method. The body must be convinced at
- 4:06the cellular level not to accept the vibrations that constitute
- 4:10illness, but rather to throw them off and eliminate them from
- 4:15their normal mode of action. Sri Aurobindo notes quote the
- 4:21feeling of illness is at first only a suggestion.
- 4:25It becomes a reality because your physical consciousness
- 4:28accepts it. It is like a wrong suggestion in
- 4:31the mind. If the mind accepts it, it
- 4:35becomes clouded and confused and has to struggle back into
- 4:38harmony and clearness. It is so with the body
- 4:42consciousness and illness. You must not accept but reject
- 4:46it with your physical mind and so help the body consciousness
- 4:51to throw off the suggestion. If necessary, make a counter
- 4:56suggestion. No, I shall be well.
- 5:00I am and shall be all right. By will to illness I meant this,
- 5:06that there is something in the body that accepts the illness
- 5:10and has certain reactions that make this acceptance effective.
- 5:15So there must always be a contrary will in the conscious
- 5:18parts of the being to get rid of this most physical acceptance.
